PREP A wire wreath frame was used for this project, but most any round form can do. Some ideas: a grapevine wreath, a large embroidery hoop, a bicycle wheel, or bend a circle from a thick wire hanger.
GATHER • Berries • Branches of cedar, evergreen, fir, pine • Pinecones
CREATE
1. Clear an indoor surface for messy work or take this project outside. 2. Begin by wiring items together in small bundles: short branches (6-8 inches long, depending on the size of your wreath frame); clusters of stemmed cones; sprigs of berries.
Natural Instincts Blithewold’s Julie Christina shares how to make your own rustic wreath “There are few things more satisfying than working with your hands to create something beautiful, especially around the holidays,” says Julie Christina, education programs manager at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum in Bristol. Julie, who grew up making wreaths, muses that preparation is half of the fun. “Leading up to the holidays, we teach simple techniques at Blithewold that can be used year after year to create timeless natural wreaths, swags, garlands, or arrangements that are so much more meaningful when you’ve made them yourself.” Plus, adds Julie, “the smell of fresh evergreens in your home is the true reward!” -Elyse Major
3. Work to conceal the wreath frame by placing bundles of greens at a slight diagonal and wrapping wires toward the base to secure (wrapping at least twice). Layer bundles in the same direction, always covering ends with the next bundle on top. Keep adding greens until you have the look you wish – simple or full. After you’ve gone around, tuck your last bundle under the first. 4. Adorn the greens by placing pre-wired cones and berries onto the wreath; secure in place by tucking and adding more wire if needed. Shape and fluff to conceal wire. 5. Attach wire to hang and enjoy!

Moveable Type Alayne White’s collection of vintage typewriters looks like it simultaneously belongs in a museum and an art gallery: The colors are vibrant and varied, from baby blue to retro red. Some are portable, others are standard 35-pounders. And, though some keys may be worn almost blank, they all work. It all started when Alayne spotted a dark black Royal in a Bristol consignment shop; she pressed a key, heard the familiar ding! and immediately thought of her grandmother. “It was a moment,” she recalls. She purchased the machine, took it home, and practiced writing letters to the typewriter – addressed “Dear Old Gal” – in what would become a daily ritual. A year-and-ahalf and nearly 40 typewriters later, Alayne is determined to honor the history of the

forgotten tool, and bring them back to life for 21st-century users. Last September, Alayne started attending street fairs and other events with rescued typewriters in tow. She would host workshops for kids and passersby. “I want people to slow down and tell a story to the typewriter,” Alayne explains. “Words matter, take a pause, see where it takes you.” The result was even greater than she imagined. Kids exclaimed, “I wish we had these instead of computers!” Grandparents sat beside grandkids and gave typing lessons. People began to bring their old, dusty typewriters dug out from attics and basements to donate. However, it was the stories brought with them that inspired Alayne. There was an older gentleman who claimed a typewriter
“saved his life” when it meant he was recruited for office work instead of the Vietnam frontlines. A woman in her 80s stuck a letter inside the case of one Alayne had just purchased, detailing memories of her war hero great uncle and offering to buy it back. “Each typewriter has a story,” Alayne insists. And it’s these stories that she’s determined to share, alongside the preserved machines. Alayne has begun to catalog the typewriters she’s collected; she plans on photographing each and transcribing the story that belongs to it, which she will then post on her blog TimeToLookUp.com for all to see and share. Find Alayne’s next workshop at Mount Hope High School in Bristol on December 8 during Breakfast with Santa. -Megan Schmit

A Whole New Ballgame After two years of renovations, Pierce Memorial Field is improving by leaps and bounds

MENTION THIS AD AND RECEIVE
Pierce Memorial Field is like the Ernest Hemingway of stadiums – it’s tough, poetic, and has seen it all. Built as a Public Works project in 1939, Pierce was the setting for the Harold Gomes-Paul Jorgensen featherweight boxing match in 1959. It was home to the Stingrays soccer team for half a decade. Babe Ruth and Ted Williams both played here. Foreigner played here. If you ever saw a rodeo in Rhode Island, it was probably at Pierce Memorial Field. And every Fourth of July, the stadium’s 8,000 seats are full of people watching the fireworks. But the structure is also showing its age. In 2017, renovations began on the stadium, whose infrastructure had fallen into disrepair. “Pierce Memorial Field is one of our city’s most treasured landmarks,” said Mayor Bob DaSilva in an email to The Bay. “Our city is working hard to not only maintain the complex through routine upkeep, but we are seeking to improve Pierce through a number of capital improvement projects.” In the two years since, workers have made striking progress: The field house
restrooms have been fully renovated, the field house has new flooring and LED lights, and multiple tennis and basketball courts have been resurfaced. New walkways are now ADA-compliant, and new handicapped parking spaces have been added to the parking lot. The stadium now has a new sound system and enclosed courtyards. The most noticeable upgrades are also the most symbolic: Pierce has a new flagpole and a new scoreboard. The baseball field is in the process of receiving a new one as well, and a whole new backstop is currently under construction. “Pierce Memorial is not only home to thousands of spectators each year,” added Mayor DaSilva, “but it is also home to the thousands of Townies who receive their diploma on graduation day and the many, many families who attend our annual fireworks display. With these renovations, Pierce Field will remain a place for all to enjoy for generations to come.” East Providence, Facebook: Pierce Memorial Field –Robert Isenberg

“I’ve been playing Santa since I was 8 years old,” says Michael J. Rielly, Bristol native and self-proclaimed Santa Ambassador. “I still believe in Santa.” Dressed in a custom-made red suit of his own design, Michael dedicates his time year-round to visiting children of military, law enforcement, and first responder families who face physical, emotional, and other challenges on behalf of the James D. Rielly Foundation. The nonprofit was established to honor
Michael’s grandfather, who played Santa from 1927 until his passing in 1991 and was inducted into the Santa Claus International Hall of Fame. Michael also runs the online Santa Claus community and social network ClausNet.com. “No one ever sat me down and said to me there is not a Santa,” says Michael. “I never said to my kids there is no Santa (they are now 21 and 26). ‘We can all try to be like Santa’ is what my grandfather used to say, and I truly believe that.”

What’s the number one rule to being Santa? You are acting and playing a character. You are not Santa. Which is your favorite holiday – Christmas or the 4th of July? My favorite is tough to pick. Even though I am the Bristol Town Crier, I have to lean a little towards Christmas because of my Santa work. Both symbolize tradition to me. What’s your most poignant Santa moment? I was doing an event in Providence and a little girl was standing alone in line waiting to come up. I notice she seemed very nervous but eager. She eventually got to me, sat on my lap, and I asked her a few questions. When I asked if there was anything I could get her for Christmas, she said, “I just want my daddy to be safe.” I asked where he was and she said she didn’t know but that he wasn’t safe. I don’t pry so I didn’t ask anymore. The answer is difficult. I can’t say he will be safe. So, I did say, “I promise you I will pray for you and think about you and your daddy.” She then stood off to the side watching for a while, all alone. The next time I looked over she was gone, and afterwards I looked around for her. That was ten years ago – I still think of her today.
Let us take the stress of finding your forever home so you can enjoy more moments like this. That’s HomeServices and that’s why we’re here.
Best Christmas movie? It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s also my favorite all-time movie. I cry every time I watch it. I feel like George Bailey. I love when Clarence says, “No man is a failure who has friends.” So true. Favorite Christmas cookie? The round ones. Santa’s advice to naysayers? You know what happens when you stop believing in Santa? You get underwear!

RHODY GEM
Hotpoint Emporium Planetarium
Miniature Underground Planetarium We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it! What it is: A miniature “planetarium” created by local artist Jen Charleson. Find whimsical geometric shapes printed on aluminum plates that shimmer in the strategically lit space, resembling constellations, orbits, and exploding stars. The NASA audio recordings taken in outer space complete the multisensory experience.
Where to find it: Tucked in the basement of Hotpoint Emporium – just off bustling but beautiful Hope Street – draw back a dark curtain in the corner to reveal a nook with an entire galaxy awaiting. What makes it a Rhody Gem? A planetarium is the last thing you’d expect to find in the lower level gallery of an art coop. Creator Jen was inspired by NASA’s media library and her own love for astrophotography and wanted to create “imagined spacescapes where art and astrophysics coexist in perfect fusion.” When Hotpoint members direct visitors to their Underground Gallery, they always add – with a knowing smile – to check out “the world’s smallest planetarium.” Says Jen, “I like to believe that when people come inside, they forget where they are for a moment or two. Mostly, my hope is that people come away realizing that the stars are closer than we think.”

comfortable. You can wear them with a sneaker and also a great dress shoe. When I’m performing, I’m usually in all black. Or all black with a pop from a light blue jean jacket or burgundy windbreaker. I love a good quality sweat pant when I am backstage or rehearsing. Those hours can be very long, so I like to be comfortable. My musical influences range from Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand to Freddie Mercury and Elvis. I draw so much from them – different vocal techniques to stage moves and ways to work a stage. I am a curious person and always learning ways to be better. Not perfect, but better. Being on The Voice was such an amazing, powerful experience that taught me that my instincts were far more correct than I thought. I gained a huge sense of self on the show. I absolutely love the 401 – it’s so dope! We have city, beautiful farms, and amazing shoreline. The culinary field in general is so overthe-top. I’m proud to be from Rhode Island. I draw so much inspiration from stories and comments from my fans. They show me so much strength and I am eternally grateful for the love they show. So excited to have released a brand new single and music video called “Soldier.” I love the theme and topic of this song. It’s about believing in yourself and standing your ground in this crazy world. Also, my annual Christmas concert will be December 15 at The Vets in Providence!

Celebrating “Life in the Garden” at Bristol’s Blithewold
Before Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum was the historic house museum, popular venue, and of course, host to stunning Christmas displays and programs, it was a home. Like many Rhode Island mansions, it was a “Country Place” – a secondary residence to get away from the city, popular with families with new fortunes to enjoy the health benefits of fresh air in a rural setting. Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle purchased Blithewold in 1894. Both were from wealthy Pennsylvania coal families, and similar to today, Augustus attended Brown and fell for the Ocean State – so much so that the famous Van Wickle gates at Brown were his gift to the University.
“It was a Van Wickle family tradition to have a tree ‘two stories tall’ gracing the main entrance,” says Blithewold’s Tree Callanan
Located at 101 Ferry Road, the house is in the English Country Manor style revitalized during the arts and crafts movement in England in the latter half of the 19th century. The home is situated on the property – with the west side covered in windows – to embrace views of Narragansett Bay and Poppasquash Point. One of the reasons that Augustus and Bessie chose the estate – which

Marjorie and Augustine both loved gardening. Also a talented watercolorist, Marjorie would spend the next 80 years of her life dedicated to the landscape at Blithewold. Blithewold is the sum of all its parts and was created to be so. Here’s a bit of text from Bessie’s recounting of the history of the Blithewold: “…the plan was to create a park with distinctive features using the house as a centre.” And “everywhere nature’s bounteous gifts have served, under man’s skillful guidance, to create an estate in which new beauties are constantly revealed and the perfect accord between architecture and grounds is ever apparent.” Tree Callanan, director of Communications and Visitor Experience at Blithewold, offers, “When you hear the word mansion, especially in Rhode Island, you immediately think of a building at a much larger scale. Blithewold is smaller and less ornate than you expect. The scale of the house lends itself to a very welcoming and comfortable feeling. Our visitors are constantly saying how cozy the house feels and how they could imagine themselves living here.”
GET RHODY STYLE “Life in the Garden” is this year’s Christmas at Blithewold theme, meant to reflect on the flora and fauna and time spent working, playing, and creating outdoors. Here are some ways to bring that feel into your own home all winter long. Deck the Halls At Blithewold, even hallways will be decorated by volunteers. “There’s not a single person on staff that isn’t part of getting it ready!” says Tree. Festoon every space in your home and enlist friends and family to help! Treasure Hunt “Take a walk outside and notice all the lovely bits! Collect cones, seeds, branches, evergreens… all can be transformed into the loveliest Christmas decorations,” says Tree. Create Traditions Each year is a new opportunity to start a tradition. they named in Old English for “happy woodland” – was its existing gardens and extraordinary trees. Bessie was an enthusiastic gardener who had inherited her mother’s interest in horticulture. The then 70-acre estate gave her the opportunity to create new garden spaces throughout the property with the help of Bristolian John DeWolf. Bessie had a real eye for beauty and good design. She worked closely with the architects in the design of the mansion. A collector of art and antiques, Bessie also sought help from antiques dealer Samuel Dean from Boston, who is responsible for sourcing many of the items found at Blithewold today. Augustus and Bessie had a daughter Marjorie who spent summers at Blithewold. Later, they would have a second daughter, Augustine, born five months after Augustus died in a shooting accident. The family enjoyed outdoor activities, and

Happy Challah-Days Celebrate Hanukkah with your favorite bread Golden-brown, shiny crust, doughy, rich texture, and that slightly-sweet taste. These are the delights of fresh challah bread. The word “challah” has become synonymous with the egg-based braided baked good, but really the term in Hebrew is used to refer to any bread served during a religious Jewish ritual. At Rebelle Artisan Bagels in Providence, you can find challah baked with customized intricate designs. Owner Milena Pagan
says that many of her regular customers were asking if she could make the bread for Rosh Hashanah. So, she and her production manager took a special trip to London to learn how to make it from a challah specialist, who even shared her own recipe, which the two have brought back to Rhode Island. Says Milena, “We are super excited to bring something different to our local community!” RebelleArtisanBagels.com -Lauren Vella

Food & Drink EXPERIENCE

From Wheels to Roots in Warren
Living on Main Street in Warren, several months ago I noticed that the Subway storefront had closed. “No big loss,” I initially thought. But then, like a vermilion flash, I began to excitedly wonder exactly what could take its place. The real estate is prime: Along this essential road in town, institutions like Rod’s Grille, Delekta Pharmacy, and the Coffee Depot stand alongside newcomers like Nectar De La Vida, Galactic Theatre, and Eli’s Kitchen (technically 30 paces from Main Street). It’s our downtown; it’s always busy, always packed with cars and people, and it’s the ideal spot in Warren for a new business. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t tried Rhody Roots’ food truck. I’d heard positive things about them, but they had eluded my specific culinary journey through mobile eateries in Rhode Island. I knew they had good food and focused on locally sourced ingredients. When I saw that Rhody Roots would be taking over the open storefront, I was brimming with excitement.
Out of nowhere one day, my girlfriend texted me a picture of the front door that said “Poutine! Down roots in Warren. 9 to 3.” Rhody Roots was officially open. I ran down the street to meet her there. When I walked inside, I was sold on the identity. Comic book pages lovingly cut up and carefully placed under glass serve as the counter for the bar. Vivid multicolored doors, curtains, furniture, and repurposed window frames adorn the entire restaurant. Huge windows surround the dining area, making it brightly lit and inviting. Hanging bench seats sit in windowed enclaves. The restaurant boasts framed paintings of Batman, Magneto, Ghost Rider, and the Infinity Gauntlet, as well as a monster mural of Spider-Man and the Dark Knight. Patrons are even invited to write down their own superpowers with Sharpie on a wall near the restrooms – a fun way to include customers in the atmosphere of the restaurant. Rhody Roots is open twice a day – once for brunch, once for dinner. Some dishes cross
over between both menus. With three visits now under my belt, I must insist that their Papas Poutine ($12) is the first thing you should order; duck fat papas bravas, cheese curd, and romesco gravy are topped with a fried duck egg. Poutine can be overwhelming, ordered by people looking to fill up on comfort food. But here, it’s a delicious build on French fries (during dinner) or home fries (during brunch) that feels like a more elegant and reserved take on the dish – with a focus more on controlled flavor profile than indulgence. It’s Peachy ($12) is literally a plate of peach slices tossed in a cinnamon agave glaze with whipped blueberry goat cheese and popped quinoa. It’s an excellent, light, sweet dish that borders on dessert without quite crossing that line. Finally, the Short Rib Bolognese ($22), also available with mushrooms instead of short rib, is absolutely delicious. The pasta choice of what appeared to be bucatini worked perfectly for a thick, meaty dish like this, which included a

Bristol welcomes first brewery “America’s Most Patriotic Town” welcomes its first brewery – with appropriately revolutionary roots. Twelve Guns Brewing references the USS Providence, a Navy vessel commissioned in 1776, that served a short sentence as a “Twelve Gun” sloop in the Revolutionary War, only to be destroyed by its crew to avoid being taken by the British. Owner Kyle Michaud’s passion for brewing started with a homebrewing kit from Amazon and is now a full-blown career. After considering several locations for his brewery, Kyle chose Bristol, and keeps things community forward by employing students and alumni from Roger Williams University. (Even the bar’s mural was painted by RWU student Tyler Luke!) Twelve Guns opened Columbus Day Weekend with a launch party featuring four very different beers: a New England-style IPA, coconut stout, blonde ale, and cranberry pilsner. Since then, they’ve added two more brews to this colorful array: Pier Pressure (Nitro Cream Ale) and Anchors Aweigh (Belgian Wit). Kyle promises more to come, but much like the USS Providence, doesn’t want anyone beating him to the punch. TwelveGunsBrewing.com -Gina Mastrostefano
Gray’s Ice Cream keeps scooping all year – including Christmas
Uptown Food & Spirits opens in Warren
“Because ice cream is good every day!” proclaims Gray’s Ice Cream, proudly scooping their homemade ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet into wafer cones and plastic cups 365 days of the year. Yes, you read that right – they even serve up ice cream on Christmas! The old-fashioned creamery started back in 1923 when proprietress Annie Gray began making and selling ice cream churned from local milk. Today, Gray’s still handcrafts all their own inventory, and is a go-to destination within its home Tiverton Four Corners. The New England-style shingled building keeps its windows open year-round, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s. So, if you find yourself craving something cold and sweet this holiday season, you’re in luck. We suggest their special seasonal Eggnog flavor, original classic Rum Raisin, Apple Caramel Spice, or Maple Walnut varieties. GraysIceCream.com -Megan Schmit
Jalapeño corn bread? Check! Lobster Benedict? Check! Stout beer, steak, and egg bowl? Triple check! If these items all sound like delicious concoctions – and you live a reasonable drive from 437 Main Street – you’re pretty much obligated to try Uptown Food & Spirits, the slick new diner in downtown Warren. The venue specializes in breakfast, brunch, and lunch, and the menu is a balanced blend of old favorites and clever originals. There are also gluten-free offerings and an expansive “create your own omelet” option. Uptown is the work of Chef Jimmy Tsimikas. After a soft opening at the end of October, Uptown adds a new restaurant to the busy Warren business district, along with a venue for parties and events. Jimmy also plans to have the restaurant open every day from 7am to 2:30pm, so no matter when your day off is, you can enjoy that Irish Coffee Cocktail. UptownFoodAndSpirits.com -Robert Isenberg

Nick Rabar is no stranger to the limelight – host of the Rhode Island PBS television series Stir It Up With Nick Rabar and Nick Rabar: Chef 2 Go, for which he was Emmy-nominated – but it’s his latest project, called Heated, that takes him beyond his comfort zone. “I’ve always done shows where I’m cooking in front of the camera. But to host a show without the security of the chef’s table? That felt like a challenge,” Nick says. Nick is the chef and owner of Rumford’s Avenue N American Kitchen and its neighboring market and cafe The Pantry. But his talents extend even further: he is a chef, entrepreneur, television host, published author, husband, father, and runner. The man moves at only one speed: full throttle. When approached by RI PBS to host a new series, Nick was ready to do something different. Each episode will center on a particular theme, featuring behind-thescenes footage with leading experts in the industry. But the real crux of the show is a roundtable debate in which local personalities discuss pressing questions: What is the best pizza? Thick crust or thin? And as you might expect, debates can get heated. “I wanted a show that’s thought-provoking, entertaining, and showcases other businesses,” Nick says. On September 4, the pilot episode of Heated aired, and it’s all about donuts (or is it spelled “doughnuts”? Find out on the episode). In it, Nick visits three unique operations: KNEAD Doughnuts in Providence, Payne’s Donuts on Block Island, and B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Mystic, Connecticut. Interspersed throughout is a discussion: Must donuts be deep-fried? Can a donut be savory – and if so, where do you draw the
line? And, for the first time ever, Nick goes on-the-record and admits he hates coffee milk. “We have so much to fight about!” he says jokingly.
