Bartlett Tree Experts The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company is celebrating its 106th year in business, and invites you to experience the dominion of the beech, a tree integral to the wildlife and ecology of many older New England backyards, at its display garden Fagus: The Story of Beech within the New England Landscape. Whether it be wood for the fireplace, tannins for the microbrewery, beechnuts for local fauna or picturesque canopies for shade and aesthetic enjoyment, the genus, Fagus, is prominent within the lives who know them. Mature tree preservation is a major part of Bartlett’s work. One of the most highly valued mature trees is the European Beech, and their garden features a canopy of European Beech trees. Walk under them to experience the romance that tree canopies create in an urban environment. Founded by Francis A. Bartlett in 1907, the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company is the world’s leading scientific tree and shrub care company. Its current chairman, Robert A. Bartlett Jr., represents the third generation of Bartlett family management. Bartlett has locations in 26 U.S. states, Canada, Ireland and Great Britain. Big Sky Landscaping

The Greene School

Big Sky Landscaping invites you to capture their “outdoor” wedding display, a captivating montage of celebration, merriment, and happiness. Locally grown tulips and daffodils, with their spring tones, create a serene atmosphere of peace and harmony. Owner Scott Rose was inspired to execute this theme from his part-time job as a wedding DJ. Big Sky prides themselves on always putting their customers’ needs first. “You don’t have to have a lot of money for us to make your yard look nice,” Rose says. Mowing lawns since the age of 9, Rose prides himself on Big Sky’s accessibility to all income levels – though their Flower Show display may make you think otherwise. Big Sky would like to give credit to Somerset Nurseries, Quarry Brothers Inc., and DJ Steve Bishop for its exhibit. Services include grass cutting, lawn seeding, general maintenance tree and shrub care, landscape design, fence/rock wall construction, mulching beds, fertilization and snow removal/plowing. 183 Anawan St, Rehoboth, MA. 774-248-4106, www.bigskylandscape.com

The Greene School is a charter public high school in West Greenwich. The school is currently operating in its third year and will have its first graduating class this year. Their curriculum is based on nature, the environment, stewardship to the earth, social issues and social causes. The theme of their display will be “Celebration Can Come in Any Form,” inspired by the 20th anniversary of the flower show (teacher and landscape architect Kurt Van Dexter has participated almost every year). Featuring heavy involvement from their students, the Greene School’s garden will use origami flowers to represent blossoming fruit trees, crab apples and flowering scrubs. There will also be a performance space for students to sing, play music and perform. There will also be a participatory flower for Alexandria “Allie” Alvarez, a 17-year-old student who recently died in a sledding accident. This display will symbolically celebrate the life she lived. 1740 Stony Lane North Kingstown, RI. 401-397-8600, www.metcenter.org

Bruce Fraedrich Vice President of Research, Bartlett Tree Expert Company Friday, February 22 at 3pm Topic: Landscape plant management is facing many challenges today. Exotic pests are being introduced at unprecedented rates, while society is becoming increasingly intolerant of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Climate change is bringing severe fluctuations in temperature and rainfall as well as an increased incidence of severe storms while the public is becoming more verse to accepting risk associated with trees. Public entities and private property owners are facing aging tree populations in the post-war suburban developments in the Northeast. Budgets, both public and private, are being strained in the new economy. About the presenter: Fraedrich’s presentation will explore these issues and discuss key research that provides direction in managing landscapes today and how this research is being incorporated into standards and best management practices to guide quality tree care. Topics will include advancements in information technology, biomechanics that provides a better understanding of tree stability, quantification of the environmental values of trees, and consumer preferences for sustainable products for managing plant health. Bruce Fraedrich is the Vice President of Research at the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company and the Director of Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories. In this position, Dr. Fraedrich is responsible for directing research, technical support and training functions for the Bartlett Company. His research interests include diseases of landscape plants, tree risk management and planting and establishment of landscape plants. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Clemson University and a Masters in Forestry from Duke University. Dr. Fraedrich received the L.C. Chadwick Award for Arboricultural Research from the International Society of Arboriculture in 2005. He lives in Lake Wylie, SC with wife Lyn where he is an avid gardener. They have two grown children and one grandchild.

Raised in Bristol, Rhode Island, he spent much of his childhood with his father, a naturalist, visiting the woods of Mount Hope. These outdoor experiences made him acutely aware of the forest in its functional, cultural and aesthetic qualities. Chris followed his passion to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design, gaining a comprehensive knowledge of the science and aesthetics of aboriculture. Following graduation, Chris spent twelve years with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation writing tree preservation reports to protect local tree populations during road construction projects. In addition to his position as an Aborist Representative for Bartlett, Chris is entrusted with the care of Bristol’s historic Juniper Hill Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark, where he helps preserve older specimen trees. He also offers seasonal lectures on plant diagnostics, landscape history and cultural trends within the arboricultural industry. Food and Wine Festival at the Flower Show What complements beautiful flowers more than good food? We decorate our tables with floral centerpieces. Creative chefs add edible blooms as accents to exquisitely prepared dishes for flavor as well as visual appeal. Wine and flowers are even more intertwined. When tasting wine, one of the first distinguishing characteristics that we notice is its aroma, called the “bouquet” and described as “floral” or “flowery.” And of course, wine and roses are famous in story and song. It is with this in mind that we are pleased to present the 2013 edition of the Food and Wine Festival at the Flower Show. During or after your visit through the gardens and displays, we invite you to come upstairs to the fifth floor Ballroom area and discover interesting wines and foods from all over the world. There is a separate admission to the Food and Wine Festival and no one under 21 may attend. Take a seat in the RI Kitchen and Bath Theatre Kitchen and watch nationally known chefs, some from your favorite local restaurants, create culinary delights and share their knowledge. Before and after, stroll through the Grand Tasting and relax in the Barefoot Lounge. Enjoy and “Sante!”

are $75 per person. The proceeds will help the Food Bank acquire and distribute food to more than 65,000 Rhode Islanders each month. To purchase tickets, or for more information please call 401-942-6325 or visit www.rifoodbank.org.

Spring Ahead

A Taste of the Season Gardeners, horticulturists and anyone with a green thumb all look forward each year to the Rhode Island Spring Flower and Garden Show. 2013 marks the show’s 20th anniversary with the theme, “Celebrating 20 Years.” Our show has earned its reputation as “New England’s Most Beautiful Flower Show.” Over the past two decades, nearly 600 gardens with ten million flowers – most of which we had to coax to grow in February – have been brought inside the Rhode Island Convention Center. To create the gardens, our talented designers used over one million yards of mulch and 750 tons of stone! With seminars and lectures by nationally known gardening experts and the return of the Food and Wine Festival, our Show more than ever provides education, ideas and entertainment for families and value for the dollar. We are pleased to be able to have you celebrate with us this February. www.flowershow.com

Save the date! Next year’s Flower Show is February 20-23, 2014
