“Having a breast health navigator at the Comprehensive Cancer Center has been a godsend. She has been there to help me through the big and small problems, like paperwork and the details of treatment, and balance it with life. She’s been there to help me through all of it.” The breast centers at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals are two of the first centers in New England to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Our leading-edge research and adherence to the highest clinical standards have earned us this distinction and ensure that our patients receive the best, most comfortable cancer care. TOGETHER, WE’RE BEATING CANCER.

A Warm Welcome A message from Executive Director Maria Gemma On behalf of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, I want to welcome you to this very special publication. Everyone in Rhode Island seems to know our name, but not everyone knows what we do. So, Reflections of Hope was created to give Rhode Islanders a better understanding. Inside the pages of this magazine are stories about the programs and services we offer, and events we hold to promote breast cancer awareness and breast health education. There are also survivor profiles, articles on our community outreach efforts, and information about the dedicated team members who work tirelessly to help those affected by breast cancer. Our mission is to raise breast cancer awareness, increase breast health education, enhance the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families and friends, and generate funding for local breast health programs. We are able to provide a wide array of free programs and services to people living with breast cancer through private donations, corporate sponsorships and grants. These programs and services are held at our Foundation’s Center and in the community. In addition, 88 cents of every dollar goes directly to our programs and services, and 100-percent of the monies raised remain here in our community. When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, my siblings and I were left searching for information and support that didn’t exist. We were forced to travel the emotional and often tumultuous breast cancer journey alone with our mother. What we experienced emotionally during her 11 month battle was

almost as difficult as losing her to this dreaded disease in 2002. In our grief we knew we needed to do something, so that others would not have to go through breast cancer alone. In 2004, our youngest brother Anthony cofounded the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, and since that time, we have helped thousands of breast cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones. You may be wondering if our tiny state needs such an organization, but did you know that one in six Rhode Island women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime? That’s higher than the national average of one in eight. That’s why your support is so crucial and so greatly appreciated. I hope that you find this unique publication informative, enlightening and inspirational. And, if you would like more information on how you can get involved, please call our office at 401-861-HERO (4376) or visit our website, www.gloriagemma.org.

What the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation is all about

Photography: Corey Grayhorse

In 2002, the Gemma family lost its matriarch, Gloria, to breast cancer. In their grief, her nine children decided to create a nonprofit organization to help fight this brutal disease. In 2004, they founded the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The GGBCRF is all about fighting the good fight against breast cancer: through support programs for patients currently undergoing treatment for or recovering from the disease, and by providing resources for their families and loved ones. The foundation also does community outreach to educate

“The people who work there are really compassionate people. How well the staff listens is striking to me. ” -Maya Breuer, yoga instructor who works with GGBCRF

people about breast cancer risk factors, allows women to share their own experiences being affected by it, and holds numerous fundraisers to generate donations to breast health programs in Rhode Island. In countless other ways, the staff and volunteers donate their time and resources to help others. Reflections of Hope has been created to introduce the foundation to the community. One in six women in Rhode Island will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That means that everyone is affected by breast cancer in some way – whether through personal illness or that of a family member, loved one, coworker or acquaintance. In these pages, you’ll get to know what the Gloria Gemma Foundation is all about – from their wellness programs promoting healthy, cancer-fighting lifestyle choices, to their support groups and grief counseling, to their celebrations of survivors. Whether you need resources or want to help others who do, read on to find out more about this uniquely vital organization. gloriagemma.org • Reflections of Hope

One Family’s Story

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation grew out of a need for more than just cancer treatment When Gloria Gemma was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2001, it was a complete shock to her and her nine adult children. By the time doctors discovered her illness, she only had another 11 months to live. “It had spread over years to her internal organs and her bones. She didn’t have any awareness that she had breast cancer, even though she had mammograms,” explains Gloria Figueroa, the eighth child in the Gemma family. “Over the course of that 11 months, as a family, we all could say that we felt very isolated from any available resources that could help us to deal with the strong emotions that this disease afflicted upon our family,” she says. “We didn’t feel that there was an adequate support system in the state – both medical and emotional support. I’m sure it was out there, but it didn’t meet our needs.” Joe Gemma, eldest sibling and now President of the Board of Directors of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, agrees. “Every single one of us reacted differently to her illness,” he says. “My reaction was one of shock and anger. Looking back, I was so overwhelmed. I didn’t scour the resources available to us, but there were not as many as one would think. They were more ‘where’s the best place to get chemo’ and ‘what’s the best funeral home.’ I just wanted to be with my mom.” Because there are nine siblings, the Gemmas were able to care for their mother on a rotating schedule, and to keep her

6|

at home and not in a nursing facility. “My mother received chemotherapy and radiation, so the side effects from the treatments, along with the emotional needs that she had, were enormous,” Gloria describes. “Based on all of that, when she did pass away, there was a strong need in my family to make a positive change for the people in this state who are diagnosed with breast cancer – for them, and their family and caregivers. This need basically was the springboard for the foundation. We put our energy into helping people in ways that we felt were needed based on our own experiences.” So, when Gloria Figueroa was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago, she had a very different experience with the disease than her mother had. “I thought I was exceptionally healthy,” she says. “My past medical history was nothing. The diagnosis was a huge surprise.” Gloria had even just had a mammogram two weeks prior to the day she felt a tiny, flat lump near her clavicle bone. “After a week of trying to dismiss it as nothing, I thought, I can’t do that. The foundation has highlighted early detection so strongly as one of the cores of what they do that it wouldn’t rest in my mind. I thought, I need to get this checked out. If I detected the breast cancer early, my life could be saved.” It turned out that that lump was one of 31 masses in her left breast – but because she found it so early, Gloria was able to recover with radiation and surgery, but without chemotherapy.

“When I was diagnosed, I was probably in one of the best shapes of my life, so I was able to bounce back very quickly,” Gloria says. “Did I need emotional support? Absolutely. But I didn’t need the same services that my mother needed. I wanted to live my life and take care of my four children,” who ranged in age from preschool to middle school at that time. “They provide a lot of support for young children, who have a really hard time expressing their emotions with regard to breast cancer,” Gloria says. “The foundation allowed the children to express their fears in a very healthy way. They gave us a happy, therapeutic environment to get ourselves through difficult times.” Through her treatment and after, Gloria took advantage of the foundation’s free programming for breast cancer patients, like yoga classes, and instruction in healthy cooking and eating. “It really helped me to be put in a better state of mind,” she says. “They have so many different ways to nurture your spiritual and emotional self that in general make you feel better. If you’re not a support group person, you don’t have to see anyone else to use the foundation. It allows for whatever level you want to have with other survivors. There are so many things that I’ve done that have helped me tremendously to live a life with less fear.” As Joe Gemma says, “Cancer goes beyond the person who’s developed it. My hope with this organization is that if the mother of someone contracts this dreadful disease, that the name Gloria Gemma comes up. If we’ve done anything, I would hope that people know that we’re there for them. We exist for them.”

Strength in Numbers

The Gloria Gemma Foundation provides support when patients and families need it most A diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating not only to the person with the disease, but to those closest to her (or, in some cases, him) as well. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation offers information, resources, and most importantly, emotional support at a time when it’s needed most. The foundation’s work falls into three categories. Birth to Diagnosis This section of GGBCRF programming covers the time in a woman’s life when prevention is most important. Making good lifestyle choices – like exercising, eating healthy, limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco – can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Those same choices also make you more equipped to deal with the rigors of cancer treatment. In the same way, early detection (through selfexaminations, annual medical examinations and mammograms) significantly improves a woman’s chance of surviving the disease, as does self-advocacy when she suspects there is a problem. That is why the Gloria Gemma Foundation puts so much emphasis on education about nutrition, fitness and detection. (Read more about their educational initiatives on p. 16.) Diagnosis to end of Treatment A diagnosis of breast cancer makes a woman feel like the world has stopped in its tracks – but it hasn’t. Often, she still has children and a spouse to care for, a home to run, a job to do and a life to live – and she will have hundreds of questions, not all of which can be answered by a doctor. Talking to survivors is helpful and calming in

a way that no other support can be. Other women who have been through the same illness understand the complex emotions and can guide a newly diagnosed patient through them. However, GGBCRF also understands that breast cancer is a family disease, and that everyone touched by a diagnosis needs support, too. (Read more about those options on p. 19.) For people who prefer one-on-one advice, it’s also available. The foundation also maintains a Resource Library at its Pawtucket office. The serene, private space holds books and informational materials on countless topics pertaining to breast cancer, home assistance, physical therapy, wig and specialty lingerie shops and hospital programs. There is also a computer in the library for internet research, as well as a television and DVD player. end of Treatment and Beyond Those who have been through the disease understand that life does not return to normal the second a patient’s treatment is over. For months afterward, some families need support and guidance to help process the experience and resume their everyday lives. GGBCRF helps those people transition from life in treatment to life after treatment, counseling them in how to relax, care for themselves and re-enter the world. Though there are more survivors than ever before, the fact is that not everyone survives breast cancer. The foundation connects families to grief counseling and hospice services, and helps patients find ways to celebrate their lives, even when their time is limited. gloriagemma.org • Reflections of Hope

Hope on Wheels

The Hope Bus is a traveling source of support and education A mobile wellness and resource center, the hope Bus is quite literally the biggest part of the foundation’s community outreach program. It delivers the Gloria Gemma Foundation’s programs, services and resources all over Rhode Island and beyond. The oversized, bright pink RV can be found regularly outside hospitals, private businesses, community and senior centers, churches, schools and health fairs. On the bus – inside which anyone is welcome – there are a variety of offerings. The bus always provides resources on breast health, risk reduction, treatment and support, and is a safe place to share experiences about the disease. On a given day, depending on the location, there are other activities on board, like healing arts programs, spa services and nutrition workshops. The bus also provides access to the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Women’s Cancer Screening Program, which grants access to free mammograms to uninsured or underinsured women. The Hope Bus is sometimes accompanied by expressions of hope, a mobile recording unit designed to aid in the healing process. There, 12 |

patients, their families and anyone affected by breast cancer can share stories, remember loved ones, create personal photographic portraits or memorialize messages for the future. It’s an emotionally charged experience, but one that has been helpful and therapeutic for countless people. The Hope Bus was donated by the Halkyard Family Foundation, and is supported in part by grants from the Rhode Island Foundation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Amgen Foundation. To request a Hope Bus visit to your event or location, contact Maureen DiPiero at Maureen@ gloriagemma.org or call 401-861-HERO.

Staying in Good Spirits Because cancer treatment is about more than just medicine Cancer is a physical disease,

but it affects the mind, body and spirit. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation believes that three of those things must be healed for a person to truly recover – and that it isn’t just the patient who needs healing, but the patient’s family and loved ones as well. GGBCRF helps aid the healing process through the Foundation’s Creative programs. Therapeutic writing classes allow patients and families to share their stories, to write down and work towards releasing all of the complex emotions surrounding treatment, recovery and remembrance. Write Your story is an ongoing writing group offered by the foundation. healing Arts projects give a visual component to healing: for the 2012 Starfish Project, people make starfish to represent those touched by breast cancer, whether patient, survivor, family member, friend or caregiver. During the process, people are invited to share their stories or just create and remember. The horticultural program allows people to create outdoor spaces that are places of growth, healing and tranquility. The act of gardening provides health benefits, while the rewards of that gardening – a beautiful outdoor sanctuary in which to sit, reflect and enjoy nature – are immeasurable. The foundation’s gardens of hope program works to provide breast cancer patients around the state with these spaces free of charge. my life, my legacy is a program for patients that gives them an opportunity to create video footage of messages to their families, and to record memories for the future.

“Gloria Gemma is all about prevention, education, healing and family support. The city is proud to continue building a partnership with Gloria Gemma in its vital role in the fight against breast cancer.” -Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien

Educating the Community Because the best attack on breast cancer is risk reduction Community outreach is a

vital part of the Gloria Gemma Foundation’s work. Whether it’s through sending the Hope Bus to a high school or collecting donations at the Bristol Fourth of July parade, the organization’s presence in the community is a continuous reminder that breast cancer affects everyone, and that it’s never too early to learn more about this devastating disease. To that end, the foundation has a pink spirit program that goes into local secondary and high schools to educate students about breast cancer and breast health. There are three components to the program: educational seminars for students and faculty about risk factors, screening methods, risk reduction, symptoms and treatment options; help in scheduling and planning school sponsored fundraisers to support the cause; and distributing pink awareness items for students and sports teams to wear. Other awareness events sponsored by Gloria Gemma are Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life, Our Heroes fashion show and the annual Gloria Gemma 5K. (Read more about them on p. 39.) The GGBCRF also has a presence at numerous health fairs throughout the state, and partners with other organizations that help raise awareness and promote good health, like the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Shape Up RI and the RI Chapter of the Pink Heals.

A Source of Support

Providing help, answers and relief during treatment Though the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation does numerous and varied kinds of good work, the cornerstone of the organization is the support it gives women and their families during treatment for breast cancer. It grew out of the needs of nine adult children who were looking for resources they couldn’t find when their own mother was sick, and who came to understand how devastating an illness it can be. Because of that, the Gloria Gemma Foundation understands how breast cancer changes lives. Now, the extensive network of staff and volunteers is filled with people who have been through the ex-

“It felt wonderful carrying that torch. I was not alone; I was part of something. I didn’t know anyone, but I didn’t feel alone. I’ve been a volunteer for about five years now. Anything they ask me to do, I’ll do.” -Meri Kennedy, reporter for the Cranston Herald

perience, and want to do everything they can to help others through it. The Foundation has an open door policy; anyone is welcome any time to stop by and speak with a volunteer or staff member, or spend some quiet time in the resource library (read about it on p.11). They connect newly diagnosed patients with survivors who know what they’re going through and can provide advice and a shoulder to lean on. Weekly support groups led by licensed social workers give women in treatment a way to voice their experiences in a completely safe way, and give spouses, children and other loved ones ways to process their own feelings regarding the lifethreatening experience. Support groups are held in the foundation’s office, on the Hope Bus, at local community centers and in hospitals. A full calendar of these sessions is available at www.gloriagemma.org. gidget’s Corner is a program designed specifically for the children of women with breast cancer, and grew out of the idea that the children’s feelings and experiences are too often overshadowed by the treatment of their sick parent. The program provides free tickets to family-friendly events like sporting events and kids activities, helping families to relax and reconnect, even in such a difficult time. gloriagemma.org • Reflections of Hope

Feeling Like Yourself Again Helping to put yourself back together inside and out It’s an undeniable fact: when you look better, you feel better – about yourself, about your day, about life in general – even if only for a minute. For women sick with breast cancer, scheduling haircuts and manicures and time to shop for new clothes is the last thing on their minds (and sometimes, the last thing they can afford). Another way the Gloria Gemma Foundation supports women during and after treatment is through their it’s All About me program, a fun way to look and feel better. Cancer treatments don’t just leave patients feeling weakened and sick during the treatment period, they have lasting effects like dry skin, weight gain and brittle, yellowed nails - and that’s not counting scars and body changes left by surgery. To help revive and rejuvenate survivors, GGBCRF plans pampering wellness treatments like spa days and classes on skin care. In addition, the foundation hosts professional bra fitting workshops and dress sales. Some survivors are even asked to participate as models in fashion shows. 20 |

The week leading up to your wedding is a time full of love, excitement and energy. The last thing Caronah expected, four days before her big day, was to get a call from her doctor. “I was on my way to work,” Caronah says. “My doctor called me and said, ‘You have cancer. You have to have surgery.’” “It was so emotional for everyone because I was about to get married,” she continues. “All I thought about was my son and everything I have not done in life, what I’ve been wanting to do and what I’ve missed out on because I was wasting time.” However, with the support of her new husband and her family, she was able to get through that initial shock and work towards healing. “The good thing about my husband is that I said, ‘I’m putting you through a lot, I understand if you don’t want to go through this.’ He said ‘I’m going to support you, we’re going to get through it.’ The Tuesday after I got back from my honeymoon I had surgery.” In the year since then, Caronah has been taking one day at a time, and looking on the bright side. “I’m a very positive person,” she says. “When I found out I had cancer, of course I was devastated at first, but I pulled myself together and realized I wasn’t going to die from this. Maybe there’s a reason this happened to me – maybe it was to change my life, because my life has changed since I had this disease. It’s realizing you don’t take life for granted, appreciating every aspect of life.” Caronah is newly involved with the Gloria Gemma Foundation: she’s in the Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life 2013 calendar, and will run in the Gloria Gemma 5K during Flames of Hope. “What they offer, what their services are, is unbelievable,” she says. “You don’t get that love and connection in treatment at the hospital. They truly do understand what it’s like to go through it.”

Flames of Hope

An inside view of Gloria Gemma’s signature event

Photography: Andrew Butler

Every Columbus Day weekend,

thousands and thousands of Gloria Gemma supporters take over downtown Providence for Flames of hope: A Celebration of life. A breast cancer awareness event, Flames of Hope is three days of education, entertainment, inspiration and remembrance. It’s now one of the biggest events of its kind in the Northeast. Friday evening, October 5, kicks off with an opening reception at the Providence Marriott Downtown on Orms Street. Saturday’s main event happens on October 6 in Station Park: Flames of Hope’s celebration village offers live music, shopping, kids activities, a Pink Party, healing arts, education and wellness seminars, cooking and fitness demonstrations and more. The day is capped off by the illuminations of life Ceremony, in which 150 torchbearers make a procession to WaterFire in tribute to all of those who have been touched by breast cancer. On Sunday, October 7, runners, walkers (and some strollers) hit the road for the fourth annual gloria gemma 5K, a road race and fundraiser for the foundation. New this year is the gloria gemma Kids 1K presented by Macy’s, for kids 14 and under. Hundreds of feet (and some paws – dogs are welcome, too) will hit the pavement for this race. The top 100 fundraisers will be invited to a reception at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in November to celebrate their achievements. For more information, visit www.gloriagemma5k.org.

we’ve been leaders in women’s health

womenandinfants.org

Major advances in women’s cancer care are happening right here.

At Women & Infants, treating the unique cancers women face is the total focus of our program in women’s oncology. • The FDA recently approved a test developed by Women & Infants’ Dr. Richard Moore that can predict the likelihood of a pelvic mass being ovarian cancer with an accuracy rate of 95%—higher than any other test. It is now in use nationwide and in Europe. • As a member of the preeminent Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), we are on the leading edge of promising cancer cures. At any one time, Women & Infants has about 45 GOG trials addressing all types of gynecologic cancers.

• We also have the most advanced system of breast cancer detection in the region, using the revolutionary Breast Tomosynthesis that creates a 3D view of the breast. The result is earlier detection and decreases in the number of false positive findings. • Our Tumor Board is a multi-disciplinary team of physicians and specialists that evaluate each individual case. • Our Integrative Care Program is dedicated to addressing the whole person in the struggle against cancer, providing massage, Reiki and other therapies to help make life comfortable. For more information, call 401-453-7520, or visit our website at womenandinfants.org.

Michelle Curry When Michelle Curry was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, it took her some time to warm up to the idea of using a support system like the Gloria Gemma Foundation. “My husband pushed me into it,” she says. “He saw it on a website and he said, ‘I think you should go.’ It took him four months but he was able to persuade me into going.” Their first meeting was with Carol Ann Donnelly. “She spoke with us for about two hours,” Michelle explains. “After that, I was sold. I started going to meetings, and got more involved. The best thing I ever did was get involved with them.” In the year that Michelle has been a part of GGBCRF, she has participated extensively in the support groups, and also in some of the organization’s signature events, like the 2011 Our Heroes Fashion Show, and another fashion show at the Celebrate Pink event at the Warwick Mall. She also participates on the Hope Bus, speaking to students about risk factors and early detection, and is Miss February in the foundation’s annual Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life 2013 calendar. Michelle was a torchbearer in the 2011 Flames of Hope procession, and will continue to participate in the event going forward. “It’s very emotional,” she describes, “walking down there with the torch, and everyone clapping and calling us their hero and saying how proud they are. It’s very emotional and very personal.” For Michelle, the best part about the Gloria Gemma Foundation is the emotional support she finds in other survivors. “People don’t know what you’ve been through unless they’ve been through it themselves,” she says. “That’s why I love Gloria Gemma so much. They all know what I’ve been through. I have friends, but I can’t really talk to them because they don’t know what I’ve been through. I have survivor friends now – they know because they’ve been through it.”

New Treatment For Chronic Pain & CIPN Calmar Pain Relief has developed the country’s first treatment center entirely devoted to the non-invasive treatment of chronic pain. Using a computerized medical device that transmits synthetic non-pain information through disposable surface electrodes on the skin (similar to an EKG), the device, invented in Italy, has received broad FDA 510(k) clearance. Since November 2009, Calmar has treated over 400 patients with chronic neuropathic and oncologic pain. Calmar uses this technology in conjunction with Stephen J D’Amato, MD FACEP, to offer a rapid, nonnarcotic, and painless treatment for various types of chronic pain including: Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN); Cancer Pain; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) & (RSD); Pudendal Neuropathy, Vulvodynia; Low Back Pain; Failed Back Surgery; Post-Surgery Nerve Lesion, Brachial Plexus and Post Herpetic Neuropathy.

This technology is being supported in clinical trials by the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center (Massey Cancer Center), the University of Wisconsin Medical Center and others. Walter Reed Army Hospital is treating wounded warriors using this technology.

Breast Cancer Facts • Nearly 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in 2012. • Over 225,000 of those will be women diagnosed with breast cancer. • Of those women, nearly 40,000 will die of the disease.

1

• 150 of those who die will be Rhode Islanders. • Rhode Island has the third-highest rate of breast cancer in the country. One in six Rhode Island women will be diagnosed with the disease, as opposed to the national average of one in eight. 2 • All women can get breast cancer, even without a family history. In fact, 75% of diagnosed patients have no family history. • While no one knows the precise cause of the disease, smoking, drinking, overexposure to the sun, hormone replacement and exposure to insecticides are risk factors. • Regular mammograms and self-examinations are key. Early detection can improve mortality rates by up to one-third. 3 1. www.seer.cancer.gov 2. www.komen.org 3. www.cancer.org

Fighting the Good Fight The foundation sponsors extensive health programming across the state The fundraising efforts of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation go to fund programming for patients and families directly involved with the organization, but those funds also go to broader, statewide initiatives. The innovative sTAr program (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation), conceived by Harvard Medical School professor Julie K. Silver, is doing its pilot program in Rhode Island, largely because of the support and encouragement of GGBCRF. The STAR Program focuses on a breast cancer patient’s life after chemotherapy, helping to nurse the patient back to health and return to her (or his) normal life, family and work. The program started earlier this year at Kent Hospital, South County Hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Rehabilitation Centers with the foundation paying for staff training at all five hospitals. Read more about it at www.oncrehab.com. The Gloria Gemma Foundation also helps to fund the rhode island Department of health’s Women’s Cancer screening program, which helps provide mammograms and health screenings to uninsured or underinsured women in the state. Since the program was founded in 1995, it has provided cancer screenings for over 30,000 Rhode Island women; nearly 400 cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed through these screenings. Early in 2012, GGBCRF donated $40,000 to the initiative, and will continue to fund the program through sales of the new Gloria Gemma license plate.

But to hear them at 31, the prime of youth, is a different experience entirely. “I had been hearing ‘you’re too young, there’s no way you have cancer,’” Nicole says. “I felt like everything I knew to be true and normal – that I was young, that I had my whole life ahead of me - was just stripped away. I had to deal with my mortality.” Though she had support, it wasn’t the kind of support that a mother with two young kids needed. “When I was diagnosed, people were trying to refer me to these women in their 50s to discuss the disease,” Nicole explains. “Their kids were grown, their kids were having kids. I had a four-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter at home. My needs were very different. I’m sitting looking at my fouryear-old, thinking I don’t want to put him in day care because I don’t know if I’m going to be here next year.” That was ten years ago. Now, after two diagnoses of breast cancer, two rounds of chemotherapy, seven surgeries and a double mastectomy, Nicole is seven years cancer-free, and working with the Gloria Gemma Foundation to ensure that nobody who comes to the center feels the same isolation she did when she was sick. Nicole is a source of support for women under 40 with breast cancer, and strongly encourages women to be “hyper-vigilant” about self-examination, and pressing doctors for tests when they suspect that something is wrong. Nicole is also a huge advocate for after-treatment support. “When your chemo is over, your friends and your family are celebrating that the bad stuff is done, but they’re not realizing that all the support you had – the doctors – is gone,” she says. “Now what? Having it go away all of a sudden is just as big of an adjustment.” Post-treatment counseling is all about finding what she calls a “new normal.” Nicole explains, “I still have to have tests and blood work, seven years later. That anxiety doesn’t go away. I might look fine, but those emotions are still there. It’s a very scary feeling. That’s why I want to be involved.”

The ARS Team

FUnDrAising

Sponsor of the Year

ARS Restoration Specialists go above and beyond for the Gloria Gemma Foundation ARS Restoration Specialists, headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts has been in business for over 25 years. They have three other offices in Massachusetts, as well as offices in Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut. “ARS” stands for Always Ready to Serve, and they bring their strong core values and mission of superior customer service and workmanship to their charitable activities. Rich Piltch, president of ARS, met Larry Gemma nine years ago, and they discovered their common bond of having family members affected by breast cancer. ARS liked the idea that the monies raised by the foundation go directly to providing programs and services to people touched by breast cancer, and that it is a local organization. Since that time, ARS has been the foundation’s leading supporter and has raised over $600,000 to date. “We couldn’t do what we do without the generosity of ARS and their friends,” says Gary Calvino, Director of Development for Gloria Gemma. ARS holds three fundraisers a year that are open to the public, and these events have consistently grown because ARS employees actively participate and invite their friends and families. In turn, those people invite their friends and families, and so on. In March, ARS has Casino Night, and turns the East Club section at Gillette Stadium into a virtual casino with games, live music, great food and incredible raffles and prizes. The next Casino Night will be held March 23, 2013, and information regarding the event will be on www.gloriagemma.org. They also host a charity golf tour-

nament every August, at the Marlboro Country Club, in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and they offer an online football pool that raised $50,000 dollars last year. “Every new ARS employee leaves orientation knowing what the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation is, and what they do,” says Steve Sorkin, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Last December, at their annual holiday party, Sorkin presented the staff and board members of the foundation with a $200,000 check. “As the foundation employee who tore the wrapping paper off the giant check that revealed so many zeros, I can only say that it left me breathless,” says Carol Ann Donnelly. “As a two-time breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand how important their very generous contribution is to the foundation and the people it serves.” What is most amazing about this company and their 120 employees is that they are all so humble. They raise money for the foundation, because many of them have had a loved one or co-worker battle breast cancer. They don’t expect accolades or recognition for the remarkable job they do to help the foundation continue its mission — they just do it. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation is forever grateful to ARS Restoration Specialists for its generosity and support. As Carol says, “Thank you almost seems insignificant for all that ARS has done for the foundation over the years, but we are truly and profoundly thankful to all of the employees of ARS Restoration Specialists.” gloriagemma.org • Reflections of Hope

Heather Diaz You don’t expect the fight of your life to happen at age 22 – but that’s exactly when it happened for Heather Diaz. “When I first found out that I was diagnosed, I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “I was 22 years old. I didn’t think about breast cancer. I didn’t think about screenings.” “I was in shock,” Heather describes, “but at the same time I felt like it was not the end, my life was not going to go down.” Instead, she chose to fight to maintain normalcy in her life. “I wanted to be strong,” she says. “I walked around like I didn’t have anything. People were wondering why I was bald, and I said, ‘well, that’s the new trend now.’ My whole mentality was just: I don’t have anything. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing now.” After a year of fighting, Heather recovered, enrolled in beauty school, and found the Gloria Gemma Foundation shortly afterward. Now, she volunteers with the organization, and marches in Flames of Hope. Her main goal is to make young women aware that the disease really can affect anyone. “Anything I can do to spread the word – breast cancer can come at any time,” she says. For Heather, it’s important to give back to the organization that does so much for other people: “They care. They want to spread the word to everyone, to make sure that they know that breast cancer can come at any time – on a man or a woman, anyone. Somebody needs to give back to them because they care so much about other people. To me, they’re my other family. That’s what I love about them.”

proud development and public relations company of

At JCG, we strive to offer clients a fresh approach to growth and communication.

This year, we are thrilled to be collaborating with the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, sharing the unforgettable stories of some of Rhode Island’s youngest breast cancer survivors.

The challenges are great.

As we design and implement strategies to raise awareness among young Rhode Islanders, who may have no knowledge of or experience with breast cancer, JCG assists the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation by connecting individuals to information and, as importantly, one another.

The opportunities are greater.

Increasing early detection means decreasing mortality rates. JCG salutes the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation team and volunteers for supporting and accompanying Rhode Islanders throughout breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. -Joseph Phommasith, Founder & Managing Director joseph@jaicg.com

The 2011 Gloria Gemma 5K Start Line

Join the Fight

How to support Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s good work The foundation could not accomplish all that it does without the help of its dedicated volunteers, and owes them a huge debt of gratitude. Often, these volunteers have been touched by breast cancer in some way. They have dozens of breast cancer survivors who willingly donate their time “wo-manning” information tables at events, performing community outreach, pounding the pavement for donations and working in the office. They provide comfort to other survivors and newly diagnosed individuals, as well as their loved ones, because they understand what it means to have breast cancer. Their selfless assistance is paramount to the foundation. The far-reaching effects of breast cancer go beyond the patient. A diagnosis is the epicenter that ripples out touching family members, friends and coworkers. The emotional impact leaves loved ones wanting to help. They volunteer in honor or memoriam of the person they love by hosting fundraisers and volunteering at signature events, including Flames of Hope.
