Welcome (Back) to the East Bay Bike Path

he East Bay Bike Path is a true Rhode Island treasure. There

are several bike paths throughout the state, part of an emerging East Coast Greenway (for more on that, see page 5), but this 14.5-mile path from Bristol to India Point Park in Providence is the first and generally considered the finest. Popular with locals and tourists, bikers and runners, old and young, the path is not simply a place to ride a bike or exercise – it’s a true community resource. Visitors bike it to avoid street traffic during Bristol’s Fourth of July celebration. Runners use it as a training ground for marathons. Photographers find ample inspiration along its coastline. Commuters to Providence use it as a fun and healthy alternative to driving 195 everyday. Even cross-country skiers use it in the winter. As an East Bay resident, you likely have some experience with the bike path. Perhaps you take your children there on weekends for a leisurely bike ride. Maybe you rode out to have a romantic picnic with a special someone on a beautiful summer day. The serious cyclists among you probably run out and cover its entire stretch just on a whim. What we want to do is not so much remind you of its existence – you probably pass it every day in some form or another – but encourage you to

enjoy its benefits, celebrate it and perhaps experience it in a new way. By linking five towns and, in the process, eight parks, the East Bay Bike Path provides endless possibilities for both active enthusiasts and casual users alike. And in the future, it’s going to provide even more. The ongoing East Coast Greenway project will one day enable East Bay residents to ride out to South Coast Massachusetts and beyond to Cape Cod. The existing link to Providence over the Washington Bridge is being revamped and improved. There is no better time than now to get out there and ride, and (re)discover the East Bay Bike Path.

WIN A Bike! Like The Bay Everyday on Facebook (Facebook.com/ bayeveryday) and tell us your favorite thing about the East Bay Bike Path. One lucky commenter will win a $300 gift card to BikeWorks in Swansea! Winner will be announced on July 1.

New and Noteworthy on the Washington Bridge Improvement Project There’s good news: the bike path is getting better – particularly, the crossing into Providence and India Point Park is being improved. Unfortunately, it means a bit of a detour for bikers until next summer. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is widening the Washington Bridge section that connects Providence and East Providence, and it will be closed to bike traffic until summer 2014. This $21.2 million construction project will also include the addition of a separate walking and bikeway path, benches, plants, lighting, flagpoles and a restoration of a historic granite façade of the original bridge. The bridge will be renamed the George Redman Linear Park after the man known as the “father” of the East Bay Bike Path. The new and improved connection will make an already wonderful bike path even better, and will make the crossing between Providence and East Providence a lot more pleasant than it has been. No formal bike path detour has been created – however, commuters can use the Henderson Bridge (aka the Red Bridge), which connects from East Providence at North Broadway or Massasoit Avenue to Providence at South Angell Street, as an alternate route. But use caution: the bridge does not have a protected bike lane as the Washington Bridge does. RIPTA also offers a Rack ‘n Ride service, allowing cyclists to mount their bikes on buses for no additional fare. Routes 33, 34 and 60 take I-195 and the Washington Bridge and Routes 32, 35 and 78 take the Henderson Bridge.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management have teamed up to improve the bike path’s connection to Hope Street. This project will also include light installation along Asylum Road. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2013 or spring 2014.

vision for linking all of Rhode Island’s Bike Paths.

Expanding and Connecting RI Bike Paths The East Bay Bike Path already provides plenty of opportunity to get out and explore our little corner of Rhode Island, but plans are underway to allow for full-fledged journeys around the state and beyond – way beyond. The East Coast Greenway is a nonprofit advocacy organization working on a plan to create a 3,000-mile trail from Florida to Maine, linking all the major cities on the eastern seaboard. Along the way, all major Rhode Island bike paths will be linked, allowing riders to travel throughout the state – and into neighboring states – by bike. There will be a continuous path from the Massachusetts border along the Blackstone River Bikeway, through Providence, and on to Connecticut via the Washington Secondary Trail. The East Bay Bike Path will also become even more of a travel resource, linking to an alternate route that will pass through South Coast Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Currently, 52 percent of Rhode Island’s 49-mile portion of the Greenway has been completed, with another 35 percent in development. One of the main obstacles to completion has been creating off-road paths through Providence. To learn more and find out how you can help, visit greenway.org, or contact Trail Coordinator Eric Weis at 401-450-7155 or eric@greenway.org.

A Field Guide to the Parks Along the Path The Bike Path connects eight parks through the five cities it crosses, providing ample opportunity to stop and have a picnic, take in some nature, or enjoy a short rest. Here are some of the highlights.

India Point Park This 18-acre Providence park marks the northernmost end of the East Bay Bike Path. India Point Park hosts a number of outdoor festivals and concerts during the summer, including a Fourth of July celebration featuring the Rhode Island Philharmonic (and, of course, fireworks) and the Rhode Island Seafood Festival (September 7-8). Visitors can also take the pedestrian bridge to the Fox Point neighborhood to find a variety of unique shops and restaurants. India St., Providence. friendsofindiapointpark.org.

The Crescent Park Carousel This historic Riverside landmark is well worth the half-mile detour off the bike path. Originally built in 1895 by renowned carousel maker Charles I. D. Looff, the carousel still operates daily. If you are traveling with children this is a must-see attraction – and rides are still only $1. Hungry? There’s a clam shack at the park, too. What’s more summer than that? 700 Bullocks Point Ave., Riverside. 401-435-7518

Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center Look for a small boardwalk directly off the path in Bristol that will lead you to Rhode Island’s state-of-the-art history museum and aquarium offering guided tours and nature walks. Be sure to stop by one of its most popular exhibits, a life-size, 33-foot Right Whale where you can stare right down the giant’s mouth. 1401 Hope St., Bristol. asri.org

Wear your helmet and reflective clothing while enjoying your bike ride!

Haines Memorial Park You will find Haines Memorial Park on your journey through the East Providence/Barrington line. This 101-acre park houses picnic tables, fire pits, two playing fields and all-too-rare-on-the-bike-path public restrooms. Haines is a popular spot for volleyball and dog walking. Its harbor is a popular docking spot for local boat owners. Rt. 103, East Providence. riparks.com

Colt State Park Known as the “gem” of the RI state park system, this Bristol park spans 464 acres. The shoreline views are completely unobstructed and look as if they came right off of a postcard. The park has dozens of waterfront benches and over 400 picnic tables. Colt State Park also offers public restrooms, fire pits, playgrounds, ten playing fields and access to the Bristol Town Beach. If extreme sports are more your thing, there is a skate park on the property equipped with ramps, half pipes and grinding rails. From May 3 to October 25, it hosts a farmer’s market on Fridays from 2-6pm. Rt. 114, Bristol. riparks.com

More Great Spaces Other stops along your travels include Bold Point Park and Squantum Woods in East Providence, Veteran’s Memorial Park in Barrington, Burr’s Hill Park in Warren, and Independence Park at the head of the bike path in Bristol.

This tiny park (the smallest in East Providence) and town center is a great place to stop, rest and refuel, with a small grassy area, some benches and an ice cream shop.

2. Riverside Square

One of the pleasures of the bike path is that it’s largely devoid of hills… except for this steep grade at the far stretch in Riverside. Approach with caution – and the confidence that it’s the only tough pedaling you’ll encounter.

The path lies closest to the water as it passes Bristol Harbor and Mill Pond, providing some of its best views. If you’ve approached from the north, jump off at Independence Park and ride into downtown Bristol for some well earned food and drink.

8. Head of the Path

The “gem” of the Rhode Island state park system is always worth a detour. Grab a frozen lemonade, take a dip at the beach or stop by the farmer’s market on Friday afternoons.

7. Colt State Park

The path crosses over Main Street in Warren at Campbell Street. (There’s a light here, so wait for the signal.) Take a quick jaunt down Campbell to Water Street to find some of Warren’s best shopping and dining – including a classic clam shack.

The Runner’s Guide to the Bike Path Though cyclists are the

primary users of the East Bay Bike Path, it is equally popular with runners, walkers, roller bladers and even, in the winter, cross-country skiers. The path is a great place to run, with its smooth surfaces, mostly flat terrain, spectacular views and, of course, plenty of fresh air. For those accustomed to running mostly in neighborhoods and on streets – dodging cars, weaving around potholes, navigating busy intersections, waiting for walk signals – the path’s long, uninterrupted stretches devoid of cars represent an ideal environment, even before you factor in the beauty of the surroundings. If you haven’t run the path before, we’ve highlighted some of the best starting points. These are easy access points with parking and other amenities to make your run more enjoyable, like restrooms or places to reward yourself with a snack after. Start anywhere you like – the important thing is to just get out there and run.

East Providence

nearby. Haines Memorial Park, which spans East Providence and Barrington, also offers parking, as well as public restrooms, and is a great place to explore during your warm up or cool down.

Barrington There’s no better place to start than the town center, where the bike path crosses County Road. There is plenty of parking nearby and all the conveniences a hungry and thirsty runner could need, including a supermarket and an ice cream shop – because you’ve earned a treat.

Warren The Park N Ride lot at Franklin Street provides parking and ease of access to the path. However, as far as proximity to amenities – which goes a long way when you’ve just run several miles in summer heat – parking by Railroad Avenue and the post office makes for an easier walk to town center, including pick-me-ups like Coffee Depot.

Bristol Where else are you going to start than at Colt State Park? There is parking, easy access to public restrooms, plenty of grass to sprawl out on for some post-run stretching and, of course, there’s always a frozen lemonade cart nearby. If you’re really hardcore, it’s also great for triathlon training: you can run and bike the path, and swim some laps at Bristol Town Beach.
