From happy haunts to fall festivals, here’s your guide to the season

HAUNT THIS WAY What’s the biggest downside to being one of the oldest cities in North America? Probably all of the ghosts. Providence has nearly 400 years under its belt, and that’s bound to come with a haunting or two. At least that’s the thinking behind the Providence Ghost Tour (ProvidenceGhostTour.com), which departs every night in September and October in search of

the dearly departed. Starting at College Hill’s Prospect Terrace, the tour winds its way through the city’s historic neighborhood, following a trail of restless spirits that haunt university dorms and admin buildings, historic libraries and more. Do you have to be a believer to take the tour? Not at all, but they can’t promise you won’t be afterward.

Shelter Arcade Bar, Providence

Flip Side, Westerly

Biergarten, Providence

HeyRhody.com

Photography (top right) by Tony Pacitti, (middle right) by Tim Siekiera, (bottom right) by Meghan H. Follett

Men and women of a certain age have an insatiable lust for the retro video games of their youth (anyone else still heartbroken over not landing one of the NES Classics last fall?). Those same people, longing for the glory days of gaming fueled by greasy pizza and whatever quarters they could squirrel away over the course of the week, can now find comfort in the barcades that have popped up all over the state. Shelter Arcade Bar (ShelterArcadeBar.com) is a blast from the past in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood. Games on site include classic cartoon beat-em-ups The Simpsons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – which are basically the same exact game, but each glorious for their own obvious reasons – and elder statesmen like Frogger and Q-Bert. Pinball machines dominate a whole wall, with league nights happening on Sundays. And if you’re looking to meet your gamer soul mate, keep an eye out for their next singles night. Flip Side (FlipSidePinball.bar) in Westerly is committed to keeping pinball alive and well in Rhode Island. Opened by husband and wife pinball wizards Mark and Dana Carvey, Flip Side has everything a retro gaming hangout needs: a rotating lineup of great tables that cover pinball’s past and present, craft brews and signature cocktails, and league nights for pinballers of all skill levels. Freeplay Bar and Arcade (FreeplayRI.com) is Providence’s latest to combine 21+ beverages with the prefered pastime of our youth, with the addition of skee ball to the 100 arcade cabinets and pinball tables. But the real bonus here is that a $10 cover charge gives you access to every game in the room without your having to weigh yourself down with quarters. Video games and pinball are hardly child’s play, but admit it, you always felt like one of the grownups anytime you got to shoot some pool. Bo’s Bar and Billiards (BosBarandBilliards.com) in Warwick has 25 pool tables, a lounge for throwing darts and daily specials (keep your eye on Sundays for free pool after 5pm and 20-cent wings). ‘Tis the season for Oktoberfest, so geek out at Biergarten (BiergartenRI.com), Providence’s own German beer hall. The newly added video games and pinball are free to play during the week, adding that extra incentive to a place that already offers a whiskey bar and menu items like Sauerkraut Balls. If you prefer the feel of polyhedral dice to a joystick, The Board Room (TheBoardRoomRI.com) in Providence is calling your name. Tabletop games of varying degrees of intensity – and believe us, some of these get really intense – line the walls, waiting for you and a group of adventurers to go dungeon crawling, space exploring or Catan settling. Monthly membership gets you unlimited access to all the universes you could ever imagine covering a coffee table with. –Tony Pacitti

Devotees of Brahmin

(Brahmin.com), the handbags made practically next door in Fairhaven, tend to stick together. We can spot a fellow lover of the label, which manages to be both contemporary chic and classic New England at the same time, from across a room. We nod, compliment each other’s handbags, sometimes strike up a conversation. But there’s one thing we never, ever do: admit we got our bags at the Brahmin Tent Sale. But really, it’s no secret. The sale, which happens annually in May and September (the fall sale is September 15-17), is all over billboards on I-195 in the weeks preceding each one. Brahmin sets up a huge tent outside its headquarters and fills it with gorgeous bags at insane discounts: bags that normally cost in the $300–$500 range are priced at more like $80–$150, with additional finds like luggage, wallets and travel accessories as low as $10 and $20. Lovers of good handbags know that the prices are lower than you’ll find anywhere else, and smart shoppers stock up on holiday gifts while they’re lining their arms with bags for themselves. If you have a keen eye, you’ll be able to spot the one-of-a-kind samples among the rows of bags. Here’s a pro tip from someone who’s been going every season for a decade: after you’ve bought in the tent, don’t skip the factory store inside the building. The newest styles and most on-trend colors are in there, and when you make a purchase in the tent, they give you a coupon for a hefty discount inside, good for that weekend only. Consider it a fashionista life hack. Just don’t tell anyone I told you. -Julie Tremaine HeyRhody.com

Boo to You Scary (and not-so-scary) Halloween attractions around the state

FOR THRILL SEEKERS

Newport’s Fortress of Nightmares

What else is Halloween for but getting scared out of your wits? Get your adrenaline flowing at one of Rhode Island’s terrifying haunted houses. Factory of Terror (FactoryOfTerror.com) in West Warwick gives new meaning to the phrase “enter if you dare.” There’s the Ghost Cemetery at Centerville Falls, the Asylum of Screaming Souls, Dracula’s Hideaway and Psycho Alley, which… we don’t even want to know. The 4-D Blackout offers zombie laser tag, where there’s only one thing keeping you from becoming one of the walking dead. Factory of Terror is the place where even if you love things that go bump in the night, you’re going to feel a few actual jolts of fear. And if you can survive this haunted house unscathed, Halloween night is going to feel like a walk in the park. There’s a haunted house attraction, and then there’s a haunted house that happens at an actual haunted military fort. At Fortress of Nightmares (FortressOfNightmares.com), the frights in costume aren’t the only ones you need to worry about from October 13 to 28. Wander through centuries-old Fort Adams in Newport and try to make it out in one piece, if you dare. In addition to their signature Tunnels of Terror, there’s Mayhem 3D, as well as a paranormal exhibit (like we said, real ghosts) and Turned, A Zombie Experience. The longest running haunted house in New England, Haunted Labyrinth (HauntedLabyrinth.com) in Cranston, is open every weekend in October. For over 30 years, this volunteer-run non-profit has been providing the youth community with scares and fun. Venture into the dark of night where ghouls, zombies and disembodied spirits await at Field of Screams (HauntedHayride.net) in West Greenwich. Terrorinducing attractions include the Dungeon of Doom, the Dead River Haunted Hayride and Cirque de Souls, a 4-D haunted maze. Don’t miss Zombie Paintball (ZombiePaintball.net), where you board a military transport truck with your own bolted-down paintball gun and attempt to survive a zombie apocalypse as you shoot live zombies and other moving targets. When the sun goes down at Confreda Farms in Hope, the frights go up. Scary Acres (ScaryAcresRI.com) offers something different and spookier every year. The nighttime corn maze is populated by ghouls and ghosts that will terrify even the bravest souls.

FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Smith’s Castle hosts paranormal investigations this fall

HeyRhody.com

If you love Halloween but don’t love losing a whole month’s sleep to horror movie monsters, skip the haunted houses and check out one of these less scary ways to celebrate. Ghosts of Newport (GhostsOfNewport.com) hunts down the City By the Sea’s lost legends on their Olde Town Ghost Walk, offered nightly in September and October. The lantern-lit tour takes you through the city’s ghostly maritime history, with chilling tales of pirates, ghost ships, graveyard crypts and more. If you can’t get enough of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, why not just stay the night? Boo At The Zoo family overnights happen October 21 and 28 at Roger Williams Park Zoo (RWPZoo.org). There, the things that go bump in the night are nocturnal animals. Get the inside scoop on them from zoo educators, plus VIP access to the pumpkins and a morning zoo tour. Smith’s Castle (SmithsCastle.org) in North Kingstown is an important part of Rhode Island’s history, and it’s also rumored to be haunted. Find out the truth for yourself at their Paranormal Investigation Series, hosted by RISEUP Paranormal, who will bring groups through the house to investigate supernatural claims. Investigations happen on September 23 and October 28. Fall Guide 2017 |

Cowboy Up Get a taste of the West at Stepping Stone Ranch’s Cowboy Rendezvous Enjoy Lunch or Dinner & Experience The Flavors Of India

Here in New England,

we’re not exactly known for our cowboy culture. You’re a lot more likely to see people in nautical stripes and anchors than cowboy boots. Some of us, though, need a little Old West in our lives, even in Rhode Island. Enter the Cowboy Rendezvous at West Greenwich’s Stepping Stone Ranch (SteppingStoneRanch.com), which is four days of good old-fashioned boot stomping, cattle wrangling fun on Columbus Day weekend (October 6-9). “Stepping Stone has always been about a Western theme,” says Heidi Waldron, who owns the ranch with her husband Darrell. “In the 1960s, it used to have showdeos, and country singers like Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn performed here.” The Rendezvous continues that tradition, staging performances of horsemanship, line dancing, saloon shows, cowboy dinners and more. There’s even a posse ride, where you hunt down bad guys on horseback. “There is some competition, but it’s just for the fun of it,” Heidi says. “Just come and enjoy yourself with your horse.” The events are free for spectators, except for the cowboy dinner, which is a ticketed event that’s open to anyone, cowboy or not. “We have this great hall with a 100-year-old bar and a full liquor license,” Heidi says. “We feed people, and we have a saloon girl show. It’s just a whole weekend of fun.” Looks like it’s time to saddle up. –Julie Tremaine

Pippin Orchard in Cranston

Nort h e r n R h ode Island

The Corn Maze at Salisbury Farm (SalisburyFarm.com) in Johnston was the first maze of its kind in New England, and has a different theme every year. With over a mile of paths through five acres of corn, it’ll challenge your memory, teamwork and sense of direction. Visit on Sundays in October for Moonlight Maze Nights, where you can wander the maze under the stars from 7 to 9pm. There’s also a pumpkin patch and hayrides for daytime festivities. Since 1964, Pippin Orchard (PippinOrchard. com) in Cranston has not only produced crisp, fresh apples, but also educated the Rhode Island community on how our food is harvested and produced. Pick-your-own apples is a true rite of fall for the whole family, and it starts in September. Add something sweet, like a fresh cider donut, candy apple or Giovanna Gelato, in seasonal flavors like Apple Pie and Peach.

Photography (top) by Blink of An Eye Photography

Weekends starting September 16, the fun doesn’t end at Confreda Farm’s Fall Fest (ConfredasFallFest.com) in Hope. Think hayrides, kiddie rides, farm activities and a corn MAiZE the size of seven (you heard us – seven) football fields, with Flashlight Nights to up the spooky factor. There’s also a food court offering fall and Halloween-themed treats, and a Pumpkin Smash at the end of October. Have fun getting lost at Dame Farm’s (DameFarmAndOrchards.com) A-Maize-ing corn maze in Johnston. It takes an hour to solve the fouracre maze, with hidden stations inside the maze that add to the challenge. Weekends in the fall, there are also wagon rides and a food truck serving up delicious seasonal treats.

Get a taste of the fall at Steere Orchard (SteereOrchard.com) in Greenville. They offer a farmer’s market and free hayrides, along with pick-your-own apples at one of the state’s biggest orchards. Steere even grows the RI Greening, which is the state’s official apple. Fall Guide 2017 |

The Farmer’s Daughter Harvest Festival

Photography (top) by Blink of An Eye Photography, (bottom) by Grace Lentini

s ou t h c ou n t y

The Farmer’s Daughter (TheFarmersDaughterRI.com) in South Kingstown is a farm stand and garden center that also offers seasonal craft events like fall wreath and terrarium classes. Their Harvest Festival, which happens every weekend from September 23 to October 29, offers tons of fun activities: scavenger hunts, pony rides, pumpkin slingshots and bowling, a corn maze, a barrel train ride and antique tractors, scarecrow making, costume contests and furry friends. Who says life on the farm is hard work? It sounds like all fun and games. Take a step back in time at Festival Farm (FestivalFarmRI.com) in Hope Valley, which promises “family fun like it used to be.” Kids can take a pony ride or a hayride pulled by an antique tractor. After, the petting zoo lets you get up close and personal with alpacas, sheep, pygmy goats, an emu and pheasants. The Yankee Pantry offers jams and jellies, as well as baking mixes and fall decor items. Sip a hot cider while you pick out your fall pumpkins and gourds. HeyRhody.com

Clark Farms in South Kingstown

Once you get to Manfredi Farms (Facebook: The Corn Place) in Westerly, you might not want to leave. The expansive gardens are gorgeous, the farm stand is lush with seasonal bounty, the baked goods are fresh from the oven. There are animals to pet and maybe slip a veggie to (after you’ve picked your own green vegetables, cut flowers and pumpkins). But what’s going to keep you there? Farmer’s golf. That’s right: a modified ten-hole golf game, played with wooden clubs and larger balls, on farmland itself, meaning that all of the obstacles and hazards – like tall grass, plants, and maybe a cow or two – are part of the game. Picking pumpkins is one thing, but shooting a corn cannon? That’s on a whole other level. Clark Farms (ClarkFarms.com) in South Kingstown has fun for days at their Fall Festival, happening weekends in September and October. Think a giant straw maze, hayrides, gokarts, a petting zoo, an Old West ghost town, a treasure mine and a 30-foot mountain slide. Fall Guide 2017 |

Mount Hope Farm in Bristol

 t h e e a s t b ay

The Pumpkin Palooza at Frerichs Farm (FrerichsFarm.com) in Warren, happening on weekends September 9–October 29, offers lots more fun for kids and grown-ups: pumpkin painting, pumpkin carriage rides, a play-scale Western town, make-yourown scarecrows, a ride-on dragon and witch broom,

and a Charlie Brown pumpkin patch. Frerichs also hosts a Good Old Days party, which is a day of good old-fashioned bluegrass music, children’s games, a beer tent and a clam bake, with proceeds going to the Autism Project’s East Bay Support Center. Coggeshall Farm Museum (CoggeshallFarm.org) in Bristol is a living history museum that preserves Early American home, cooking and farmways. September 16 and 17, they’re celebrating their 44th annual Harvest Fair, which will have friendly competitions, live music, dancing, hayrides and pony rides, and handcrafted items from local vendors. Middletown’s Sweet Berry Farm (SweetBerryFarmRI.com) spans 100 acres. The centerpiece: a

Coggeshall Farm Museum Harvest Fair

farm market and cafe that sells its own seasonal fruits, veggies, cut flowers, premium ice cream, and a selection of gourmet and specialty foods. Though named for its strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, the farm offers a broader selection of pick-your-own items, including apples, peaches, pumpkins and – later in the season – Christmas trees. Two words: goat yoga. That’s right, Simmons Organic Farm (SimmonsOrganicFarmRI.com) in Middletown offers this new yoga trend, which is exactly what it sounds like: an outdoor yoga class surrounded by baby goats. The farm, which specializes in growing traditional and heirloom produce, is also known for its farm stand, a community-supported agriculture program (CSA) and a petting zoo, offering visitors a chance to get up close with goats, lambs, a pony and more. Simmons Farm offers fresh eggs, grass-fed beef, pork, and its own cheeses, made fresh daily using the farm’s own goat and cow milk. Operated by the Mount Hope Trust, Mount Hope Farm (MountHopeFarm.org) is a national historic site housed on 127 acres of land in Bristol and includes a year-round farmers market, a 12-room bed-and-breakfast and a Civil War–era barn you can rent for functions like weddings. Also on the property are hiking trails, an education center, and farm animals (sheep, chickens, goats, donkeys, oh my!).

Escobar’s Highland Farm (EscobarFarm.com) in Portsmouth has different fall fun happening every weekend, from a Harry Potter day to a Super Heroes Day, Grandparents Day and Military Appreciation Weekend. A Pumpkin Festival celebrates the opening of the Pick-your-own pumpkin patch, and there’s an old fashioned Halloween Party on the weekend before the holiday. That’s in addition to hayrides and the giant 8-acre corn maze.

Things That Go Bump In RI On the hunt for the state’s real ghost stories By Julie Tremaine & Tony Pacitti

A

s one of the earliest states in the Union, Rhode Island’s past is studded with military valor, industrial ingenuity… and a lot of slightly darker history. If you’re looking for a place to get your pants scared off in celebration of Halloween, here’s our go-to guide to ghosts, ghouls and mysterious baby carriages all over the spookiest state.

Providence Athenaeum If you work in a library beloved by both H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, you have to expect the occasional haunting. Poe in particular left a significant impression, as the Athenaeum was where he courted – and was later dumped by – Sarah Helen Whitman. Poe died not long after they parted ways, and Whitman is said to have summoned his spirit in the library. Decades later, a man was found sleeping on the Athenaeum steps. When asked to move, he proceeded to yell, “The Conqueror Worm!” – the title of one of Poe’s poems – before vanishing into thin air.

Crescent Park, East Providence

Photography by Mike Braca

While nowadays the park is home to just a carousel, once upon a time there was a full amusement park there, with rides, a midway, a shore dining hall and the Alhambra Ballroom, which burned down in 1969. Visitors to the Looff Carousel report hauntings by those who died in the fire, as well as music that begins to play by itself and an apparition of a woman in old-time clothing.

Dexter House, Providence

Athenaeum

This current RISD dorm was once a funeral home, where the wake of none other than H. P. Lovecraft was held. It’s also purported to be one of the earliest sites in the country where embalming was practiced, so naturally it’s just a little bit haunted. RISD students have reported the usual paranormal activity, but nothing sounds quite as terrifying as waking up in the middle of the night to find your sheets pulled tight and the indentation of a ghost sitting on the edge of your bed.

University Hall, Brown University, Providence The building that currently houses Brown University’s administration, including the university’s president, was once the entirety of the Brown campus. During the Revolutionary War, the building was used as a hospital facility for colonial and French troops; you don’t need to know much about 18thcentury medicine to know that a lot of soldiers died there. Faces have been seen peering through windows at night, surveying the Ivy League quad from beyond the grave.

Benefit and Thomas streets, Providence Benefit Street is lousy with ghosts. Why? Because when the city was expanding in its early days, the bodies that had once been buried in people's backyards had to be moved. Of course the city missed a few corpses – some things never change. Thomas Street has a few specific hauntings of note. One is in the eye-catching Fleur de Lys Studio, which is frequented by the ghost of a woman named Angela O’Leary. After her affair with a married mentor turned sour, Angela killed herself in the studio, where she has appeared as an apparition and, during renovations years ago, left handprints in the sawdust. Thomas Street is also home to a ghost who has been seen dancing in the street. Believed to be the resident of one of the street’s old boarding homes, she’s generally pleasant – the Casper of Providence, if you will.

Brown University

Greene Homestead, Coventry Now a National Historic Landmark, the Greene Homestead was once home to Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene and his family. There are many stories of spooky happenings at the homestead, including a baby carriage moving and doors opening on their own, apparitions and phantom footsteps and even the sound of a phantom carriage approaching the home.

Sprague Mansion, Cranston

The Breakers 44

| Fall Guide 2017

Amasa Sprague, textile magnate and brother of governor and US senator William Sprague, was found beaten to death near his Cranston mansion in December 1843. John Gordon was accused and found guilty of the murder and sentenced to death by hanging. Gordon was the last person executed in Rhode Island, and in 2011, Governor Chafee pardoned him based on the lack of evidence supporting his conviction (historical documents show that there was a clear anti-Catholic/ anti-Irish bias at play in the trial). But ghosts tend to hold a grudge. Sprague Mansion has been besieged by poltergeists ever since the murder – think mysterious unmaking of beds, flickering lights and disembodied footsteps. HeyRhody.com

Photo (top) by Savannah Barkley for Hey Rhody, (bottom) by Gavin Ashworth

The Newport Mansions You can’t throw a rock without hitting a supposedly haunted mansion in Newport. Seaview Terrace has ghostly legends tied to its original owners – including temperature drops, strange sounds (like the broken organ playing on its own) and apparitions – and has been featured on Ghost Hunters. Alice Vanderbilt’s ghost has been spotted throughout the hallways of The Breakers for years. And of course, the granddaddy of haunted spots in Newport is Belcourt Castle, with a collection of supposedly haunted and paranormal items.

Fort Wetherill, Jamestown A walk through Fort Wetherill is guaranteed to give you the creeps. The abandoned artillery fort is littered with graffiti and things that go bump in the night, even in the middle of the day – which makes sense, because the site at the bottom of Conanicut Island has been used for military action since the Revolutionary War. There are legends of a ghostly black dog – a British omen of death – roaming the grounds, as well as other spooky apparitions.

Slater Mill, Pawtucket Considering the very different ideas we have about workers’ rights now, and the fact that children did some of the mill’s most dangerous jobs, it’s no surprise that the actual birthplace of the Industrial Revolution would have some bad juju inside. The location of frequent paranormal investigations, Slater Mill is full of reports of dark figures, including little ones.

Fort Wetherill The Barn, Roger Williams University, Bristol Of the many legends of hauntings on the Roger Williams campus, RWU’s barn is, hands down, the creepiest. Students and visitors report strange visions and sounds from “Banquo,” the barn’s ghost, who is rumored to be the spirit of a farmhand who froze to death inside the building when it was a working barn in Glocester. There’s a chair on the second floor reserved for Banquo, and students who sit in the chair have reported strange injuries afterwards.

Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Exeter

The Barn

An otherwise sleepy cemetery is the site of the grave of Mercy Brown, better known as Rhode Island’s “real” vampire. Mercy, as well as several of her family members, died of consumption at the height of New England’s vampire panic. When her brother became sick, people assumed that a vampire was preying on him and exhumed the rest of the family’s bodies for examination. All the bodies had decomposed except Mercy’s; in response, the exhumers burned her heart and gave the ashes to her brother to drink. Spoiler alert: he still died of consumption. Local legend describes Mercy’s ghost haunting the cemetery… and asking to be left alone so she can rest in peace.

Block Island The challenging geography around Block Island has led to many shipwrecks. The most notorious of them is the wreck of the Princess Augusta in 1738, which was carrying Germans native to the Palatine region to the British colonies in the Americas. On the beleaguered trip, 200 of the 240 passengers died; the ship eventually ran aground at the north end of the island. Today, there are many accounts of the Palatine Light, an apparition of a glowing ghost ship in the waters around the island.

Ladd School, Exeter The dark history of this abandoned building – opened in 1908 as a school for the “feeble minded,” in reality a containment area for people deemed immoral or otherwise undesirable – has led to many stories of otherworldly experiences. Visitors to the Ladd School report hearing screams and voices from far away, as well as electronic devices losing power unexpectedly. HeyRhody.com

Take in the colors of the season on these Rhody trails

ure, you can leaf-peep from inside a car, but to really experience the beauty of fall in Rhode Island you need to get out and walk among the changing leaves. Take some time for a weekend excursion, a hike or a bike ride to explore one of the loveliest times of year in New England.

Beavertail State Park in Jamestown has some of the most scenic, unspoiled land in the state. The park is home to rocky coastlines perfect for saltwater fishing, as well as miles of hiking trails. After you explore the trails, be sure to check out the iconic Beavertail Lighthouse Museum (BeavertailLight.org), which is open on weekends from September 9 through October 8. For a picnic excursion in a beautiful natural setting, visit Charlestown’s Burlingame State Park. The 3,100 acres offers 50 fireplace sites, as well as a swimming beach and a boat launch. The park is next to the Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary, and trails lead from Burlingame into the 29 acres of pristine natural habitat that surround Watchaug Pond. In Middletown, the Norman Bird Sanctuary (NormanBirdSanctuary.org) offers 375 acres of natural habitat to observe our flying friends. Seven miles of hiking trails wind through the property, which also houses a Barn Museum of Rhode

48

| Fall Guide 2017

Island’s natural history, with wildlife and natural habitats. The sanctuary is open every day from 9am to 5pm, and requires a small fee that goes towards preserving the property. For casual birders – you know, those of you who can’t tell a yellow warbler from a red-tailed hawk – there are free guided birding tours every other Sunday morning at 8am.

Spanning across Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton and West Greenwich, Arcadia Management Area offers up 14,000 acres of adventure, with miles of marked hiking and biking trails. Fish on Breakheart Pond, hunt in designated wooded areas or ride horses at the park. Kids under 14 can fish in Frosty Hollow Pond, which is stocked with trout. The Wood River, also stocked with trout, is widely known as one of the best freshwater fishing experiences in the state. Take a leisurely bike tour through the Blackstone River Valley with Cycle Blackstone (CycleBlackstone.com). These tours take riders of all ages on scenic bike rides every other Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Beginning at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket, the tour winds past historic sites in the city like Slater Mill, the Kelly House Museum and the oldest brick mill in the country before ending in Lincoln. Pardon Gray Preserve and Weetamoo Woods in Tiverton combine to protect 780 acres of land. The trails pass through level grasslands, gently sloping forests and seasonally wet lowlands. The Pardon Gray Preserve is located right off of Main Road, which leads to a dirt road and parking area. The trailhead is surrounded by active farmland, original stone walls and a stone kiosk that covers an old well house. The Cemetery Trail (purple trail) begins at this parking area and connects to the yellow trail, the western boundary of Weetamoo Woods. Heading south on the yellow trail eventually leads to the red, orange, blue and green trails of Weetamoo. HeyRhody.com

Since 1987, the Westerly Land Trust (WesterlyLandTrust.org) has been a private conservation organization devoted to preserving Westerly’s gorgeous green spaces. The Trust has several different preserves, all with walking/hiking trails. From the easy 0.6-mile paved walking loop at Avondale to the more rugged trails through Grills and Riverwood preserves, there’s something for every level of activity, and the views are some of the best around.

Photography (top) by Tony Pacitti, (bottom) by Michael Cevoli

For a scenic ride that’s both challenging and fun for the whole family, spend a sunny fall day on the East Bay Bike Path. The path starts in Providence at India Point Park, passes through East Providence, Barrington, Warren and ends in Bristol. Along the way, there are gorgeous water views of Narragansett Bay, and plenty of places to drop your kickstand and take a rest – for example, you can hang out at the Crescent Park Carousel in East Providence, lunch at Blount Clam Shack in Warren, or do some birdwatching at the Audubon Center in Bristol. If you want to bike while doing good for someone else, join the 8th Annual Woony River Ride Bike-A-Thon (WRWC.org) on September 16. The fundraiser for the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council aims to support youth programs and bike path expansion. Choose one of five different rides – ranging from 5 to 60 miles – and celebrate in Providence’s Waterplace Park afterwards with live music, entertainment and prizes. Dundery Brook Trail in Little Compton is located within the John C. Whitehead Preserve, which is managed by The Nature Conservancy (Nature.org). The Boardwalk Trail, which includes 0.6 miles of an ADA accessible path, is ideal for people with physical limitations. It also provides optimal viewing of the intact forested and wetland areas without damaging any habitat, meaning wildlife can go about their usual routine without being disturbed. As far as wildlife sightings, painted turtles can be found in the pond, while snapping turtles are often seen along the brook. Located right off of Metacom Avenue in Bristol is Mount Hope Farm (MountHopeFarm.org), whose

paved trails are perfect for total hiking newbies, families with young ones in strollers or folks looking for a leisurely stroll with their leashed dogs. As you mosey along you’ll see a variety of habitats (ponds and hay fields) and historic structures (Cove Cabin, Governor Bradford House, North Pasture Guest House and South Pasture Guest House). Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk is an easy first foray into the great outdoors. It’s managed by the Audubon Society of RI (ASRI.org), which is responsible for the preservation of roughly 9,500 acres across RI and MA. The red trail is short and sweet, taking about 20 minutes to complete. It runs along field edges and peeks into forested areas. Both the blue and yellow trails take a bit longer, an hour each, and give you an opportunity to fully

explore the forested and wetland habitats. Open sunrise to sunset, the trails are well marked and relatively level. And there are even guided walks throughout the year. The Sakonnet Greenway Trail (AILT.org) in Portsmouth is the longest nature trail on Aquidneck Island. Here you’ll pass through active farmlands, vineyards, wetlands, forests and recreational areas like the Newport Polo fields. There are many loops to explore as well as long treks. There’s easy access at the Wyatt Road Soccer Complex to the Middletown Southern Loop (yellow trail) at the southern end of the Greenway. The trail is a fun hike on its own and even passes by Newport Vineyards, a perfect place to stop for lunch. For a more challenging excursion, continue on to the Middletown Northern Loop (green trail) to tack on a few more miles.

Shopping in the sun, surfing the autumn waves and fall footwear

THE STATE’S FIRST FLOWER TRUCK You’d know if you saw Wildflower Truck (WildflowerTruck. com), the mobile flower shop that’s been making a name for itself at outdoor markets and festivals around the state since last spring. It’s hard to miss, seeing as it’s a gorgeous 1968 Volkswagen Single Cab. Something between a pickup and a VW bus, it’s a flower child’s ride if there ever was one. It’s also the only one like it in New England. “The ladies love the flowers,” says co-owner Krystal AmaralFurney, “But guys love the truck.” There’s a lot to love. Obviously there’s the adorable truck, as Instagrammable as they come, but at the end of the day it’s all about the flowers – bright, beautiful and all as

locally sourced as possible. Wildflower’s fall offerings will include dahlias, lisianthus, zinnias, and maybe even some sunflowers if the frost holds out. Customers make their selections from the truck’s assortment of colorful offerings, with Krystal and her husband, co-owner Nicholas Furney, offering advice and making a charming arrangement out of their picks. “There are no strings attached with flowers; they are just pretty,” says Krystal. “It’s living art, and it’s so exciting to watch people get to build their own dream bouquets. Flowers make people happy.” Check Facebook and Instagram @TheWildflowerTruck for upcoming events.

SEASONAL STYLE

Surf Season. Really. Just because the leaves are changing doesn’t mean your surfboard has to go dry By Trent Babington

state is off picking apples and glutting on pumpkin-spiced everything, grab a board and head to the beach. NARRAGANSETT SURF AND SKATE SHOP Tricia Pan, owner of Narragansett Surf and Skate Shop (NarragansettSurf AndSkate.com), has two words to describe the fall surfing experience: “Top notch.” Her shop teaches both surfing and stand-up paddle boarding (or SUP, as she calls it) at Narragansett Town Beach year-round: “If [you’re] the adventurous type, [we’d] be happy to take you out for a surf in February!” she says. Lessons can be held one-on-one or in groups, and must be scheduled beforehand. Tricia invites anyone who wants to learn “safety, how to paddle, how to stand and most importantly how to get the most fun out of the sport.” PETER PAN SURFING ACADEMY Peter Pan (PeterPanSurfingAcademy.WPWeb.com) is a legend of the Rhode Island surfing scene, having amassed hundreds of awards in regional surfing

competitions over the years and designed nine boards for various manufacturers. Today, his daughter runs Narragansett Surf and Skate (see above), while he offers his own surfing and paddle board lessons at different locations around the bay. One particularly scenic haunt is Narrow River in Narragansett - the flat waters and sandy bottom make for wonderful beginner paddle boarding. Like father like daughter: lessons go year-round and must be scheduled beforehand. DIAMONDBLUE SURF SHOP Block Island might be a favorite tourist spot during the summer, but it’s not too late to take one last trip to our little island getaway. Diamondblue Surf Shop (DiamondBlueBI. com) is just up the street from the ferry dock. There they extol the virtues of Block Island’s unique marine geography, free of dangerous currents and great for people looking to learn how to surf. The beaches

are also more laid-back than, say, Scarborough or Narragansett, especially during the fall. In fact, it’s so nice out on the island that Diamondblue’s lessons run through Columbus Day. RHODY SURF Rhody Surf (RhodySurf.com) in Newport started as a surf school and has been offering paddle boarding and surfing lessons since 2011. The business now sells sports gear as well, but owner Bobby Drought maintains that “the focus has always been providing a fun outlet for someone who wants to learn how to paddle and how to surf.” Through October, surfing lessons take place at Second Beach in Middletown, whose south-facing shore creates excellent beginner waves – not too big, not too small, as Bobby explains. Meanwhile, paddle boarding happens in the shelter of Newport Harbor, where the view of the Newport Bridge rising over the marina

creates a beautiful backdrop. PADDLE SURF RI The calm, shallow waters of the Pawcatuck River in Westerly provide a great environment for paddle boarding, and Misquamicut State Beach, just down the road, is one of the best beginner surfing venues in Rhode Island. Paddle Surf RI (PaddleSurfRI.com) takes full advantage of both locations, offering stand-up paddle boarding on the river and surfing lessons on the beach throughout the year. They even teach “paddle surfing,” where participants learn how to manipulate a surfboard and a paddle at the same time. FLOORTIME STUDIO FloorTime (FloorTimeStudios.com) in Middletown began as a dance studio, but for the past few years they’ve also offered Surfset classes: think a cross between a balance board and yoga. This exercise is a great way to get the health benefits of surfing – namely a great cardio workout and increased flexibility – without poking a toe in the water. FloorTime holds classes for all skill levels at their space in Middletown, but they also set up at different locations including The Break Hotel (TheBreakHotel.com) in Narragansett, Battery Park in Newport, and URI’s South Kingstown campus.

Surf’s Up! Want to see how the pros do it? Head to The Ocean Mist (OceanMist.net) in Matunuck for the Battle of the Beach surf contest to see local surfers compete across various categories. Be sure to stick around for the promised “madness, mayhem, music and mudslides.” Peter Pan Surfing Academy

FA L L FL AVORS Gourmet doughnuts, BYOB restaurants, new dining destinations and candy apples

G O NUTS FOR D OUGHNUTS Once, in the dark days before Instagram, doughnuts were pooh-poohed as sugar bombs for kids. Not anymore. Rhode Island is having a bona fide doughnut explosion, with gourmet confections in unimaginably delicious varieties filling up our social media feeds – and our bellies. From the lines out the door at PVDonuts (PVDonuts.com) and Knead (KneadDoughnuts.com) in Providence, to the square treats

at 4corners Coffee (4CornersCoffeeRI.com) in Warwick, to the only-in-Newport varieties like Marble House at Liberty Donuts (Facebook: Liberty Donuts Newport), there’s never been a better time to taste-test your way through your weekend mornings. True Rhode Islanders will always love our Allie’s doughnut cake, but isn’t life a little sweeter when there’s a food trend like this? Creative confections at PVDonuts

A passion project inspired by chef and owner Adam Baffoni’s upbringing on a poultry farm, Pastaio on the west side of Providence(Pastaio-PVD.com) utilizes simple, locally sourced ingredients and – with care and attention to detail – turns them into truly sublime dishes. Their deliberately small but brilliant menu features fresh handmade pasta and is constantly changing to suit the growing seasons. Jahunger (Facebook: Jahunger Restaurant) is a recent addition to the East Side, and offers deliciously authentic Uyghur fare that will broaden your purview of Asian food. What distinguishes this particular type of cuisine is the highly specialized preparation of ingredients and nuanced flavors that oftentimes more closely resemble Middle Eastern fare. Indulge your palate’s curiosity and try the mouth-watering lamb kebabs or a delicious noodle dish like the Ding Ding Noodles.

and cheese for $11? Yes please.) Every day of the week offers noteworthy specials, like Margarita Monday (free tapas with your order of a margarita), Burger & Beer Wednesday and Wine Enthusiast Sunday, just to name a few. Tucked back from Main Street in East Greenwich Feast Sandwich Company (FeastSandwichCompany.com) specializes in the ultimate American delicacy: sandwiches. Choose among mouthwatering appetizers, tasty handcrafted burgers, savory artisan wraps, pressed sandwiches and refined frankfurters. A perfect cure for a hangry afternoon. Enjoy a wide assortment of small plates along with a glass of red or white at Merienda Tapas (MeriendaWineBar.com) in Warren. Take a friend or a sweetheart for an intimate date where you can have fun trying out different dishes and alcohol pairings. The patatas bravas, bacon-wrapped dates and citrus-marinated olives are all a great place to start. Kai Bar (KaiBarEG.com) is a chic cocktail bar that brings the beautiful flavors and leisurely vibe of the tropics to East Greenwich.

You’ll often find a lively and spirited crowd enjoying delicious small plates along with innovative cocktails crafted by a renowned mixologist. Plus, tables are equipped with card games like Uno or Cards Against Humanity to keep guests entertained throughout their visit. TigerFish’s (TigerFishBI.com) seafood-driven Asian fusion offers a fun and delicious departure from what you typically find on the Block Island food scene. Banana Leaf Red Snapper, Spicy Lobster Red Curry, Dragon Style Seafood Salad, Fresh Watermelon Juice… we could go on and on. It’s the perfect way to top off your Block Island vacation or day trip. Stoneacre Brasserie’s (Stoneacre Pantry.com) new location in Newport’s beautiful Washington Square hasn’t changed their mission: Stoneacre remains focused on providing exceptional dishes made with ingredients that have been ethically sourced from local farms and fishermen. A small seasonal menu and newly redone dining room will be sure to deliver a fivestar evening.

Go beyond Greek food staples like the gyro and experience dishes that you’d only find on the table at a big Greek family gathering. Kleos (Facebook: Kleos) offers a family-friendly spot in downtown Providence with an upscale Mediterranean spirit. It’ll make you feel like you’ve crossed the ocean and arrived in the Land of Gods.

With an extensive bar program that’s crafted just as meticulously as their crowd-pleasing menu, The East End (TheEastEndPVD.com) on Providence’s East Side makes it easy to sit around a table with friends and lose track of time. Play catchy bar games, experiment with one-of-a-kind cocktails, sample over 300 whiskeys with their whiskey flights and snack on made-for-sharing platters with a group of friends.

Bring It 10 ways to mix up your usual dining spot at BYOB restaurants By Jessica Bryant

BYOB restaurants are the perfect way for wine and beer enthusiasts to explore new food and drink pairings without breaking the bank. Here are 10 restaurants worth trying.

1 Enjoy authentic Japanese food (and generously portioned entrees) at Tokyo (TokyoProvidence.com) in Providence’s Fox Point neighborhood. The sushi selection ranges from classic rolls to more experimental specialty options covering all bases for different levels of sushi lovers. 2 The casual Edgewood Cafe (EdgewoodCafe.com) in Cranston has both indoor and outdoor seating, a menu that includes gourmet pizzas and burgers, and a chef known for his house-made sauces.

October 21 10:00 - 5:00

3 Located on the East Side of Providence, low-key Apsara Palace (Facebook: Apsara Palace Hope St) offers an extensive menu of appetizers and combo plates with Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai and Chinese influences. 4 With a smaller menu of Italian classics, Cafe Vino (CafeVinoRI.com) in Johnston is dedicated to quality over quantity. Though the ambience is intimate because of the establishment’s size, the restaurant delivers on big flavors and fresh pasta. 5 Proving that simplicity is key, Island Deli (IslandDeliPJ.com) in Narragansett is a sandwich place that’s popular with both the college crowd and locals. The casual spot offers hearty portions with a fresh selection of sides. Try one of their grilled wraps. 6 With a focus on South Indian cuisine, Godavari (GodivariUS.com) in Cumberland offers dinner service as well as a lunch buffet, a great option for those who want to try a variety of dishes before committing to just one.

It’s not easy to pick a favorite Italian place in Rhode Island. Sophia’s Tuscan Grille (Sophias-TuscanGrille.com) in Warwick, a cozy restaurant featuring fresh Italian dishes and brunch on Sundays, should be at the top of anyone’s list. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

9 Crazy Burger (CrazyBurger. com) is walking distance from the Narragansett Seawall and offers brunch, lunch and dinner. The casual joint is known for its unique specialty burgers but includes meatless dishes, including plenty of vegan options.

8 Specializing in sushi and yakitori, the family-run Sumo Sushi (Facebook: Sumo Sushi Newport) is a regular goto for Newport locals. Bring your own sake and they’ll even heat it up for you.

10 Conveniently located next to a wine store in downtown Providence, Vinya (Vinya-RI.com) dishes out tapas with a rotating seasonal menu in its quaint dining room. HeyRhody.com

LAST PEEK

GROWING THE GREAT PUMPKIN Richard Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island, has the distinction of having grown the largest pumpkin ever recorded in North America. Coming in at a whopping 2,261.5 pounds, this monster of a vegetable is the one to beat at this year’s Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Annual Weigh-Off, held every October at Frerichs Farm (FrerichsFarm. com) in Warren on October 7. “I’m hoping to be over 2,000,” Richard said the morning of last year’s event. A humble prediction, but an honest one – no one seemed more

surprised than Richard when the pumpkin’s weight was announced to a roaring crowd. He took the crown from his own son, Ron, who previously held the record with a 2,230-pound gourd. That’s a lot of pumpkin pie. For the growers, the Weigh-Off is the culmination of months of hard work. For the spectators, and you better believe there’s a committed crowd for this kind of thing, it’s a chance to be able to walk away claiming, “I was there” when the biggest pumpkin ever grown was added to the record books.
