Garden City and Chapel View The West Coast, where warm, sunny days happen all year round, is rich in outdoor malls that make shopping a relaxing and pleasuarable experience, even for the most reluctant of shoppers. In Rhode Island, the closest we have is Garden City, an outdoor mall where it’s dangerously easy to stop in for an errand and end up staying a whole afternoon. Between the delicious restaurants like Bistro 22 (22 Midway Road, Cranston. 401-383-6400, bistro22ri.com) are Rhode Island’s only outposts of retailers like anthropologie (56 Hillside Road, Cranston. 401-275-0205, anthropologie.com) and the Container Store (150 Hillside Road, Cranston. 401-868-4140, containerstore.com). Barrington Books (barringtonbooks. com) just opened a second location in the center. Stop in at Sweenor’s Chocolates (43 Hillside Road, Cranston. 401-942-2720, sweenorschocolates.com), where they’ve been making some of Rhode Island’s most delicious edibles for four generations. Across the street is Chapel View, another large development with a lot to discover - especially when it comes to pampering. Chapel View is home to high-end men’s barber Gents Barbershop and Spa (1000 Chapel View Boulevard, Cranston. 401-654-4700, gentsbarbershopandspa.com) and swank nail salon Cosmo nails (1000 Chapel View Boulevard, Cranston. 401-464-4447, cosmo-nails.com). Stop in at Massage envy (1000 Chapel View Boulevard, Cranston. 401275-4900, massageenvy.com) to treat yourself, or pick up a gift certificate to treat someone else. Nearby on Oaklawn Avenue, perfect touch interiors (690 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston. 401-944-4440, perfecttouchinteriors.com) is a design showroom with a flair making for creative spaces. eden XO (705 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston. 401-2752077, edenxo.com) is a chic, minimalist destination for great hair.

Two Holiday Shows SAVE THE DATE!

Eclectic shopping at Frog and Toad in Providence

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are so ingrained in our holiday vernacular that they’re practically holidays themselves. But there’s really no celebration here, rather desperate attempts to buy an $8 fleece jacket at 2am for someone who doesn’t even want another cheaply made fleece jacket. Small Business Saturday is here to rescue you from the holiday madness. Started by American Express five years ago, the day (which always falls on the

Saturday after Thanksgiving) encourages shopping locally and in the flesh at brick and mortar shops. According to Buy Local RI, a non-profit collaborative spearheaded by the Rhode Island Foundation, if we all shifted 10% of our annual big box spending to independently owned businesses, we would add $373 million dollars to the Rhode Island economy. Now that’s a reason to celebrate! Small Business Saturday falls on November 28. buylocalri.org

Bay Walking Where to stroll, shop and repeat along the East Bay

The string of small, suburban towns on the East Bay is mostly known for its killer waterfront views and picturesque bike path. This cozy waterfront restaurant features farm-to-table dining and a great bar menu, which is just what you need after a long day of shopping. Warren Tucked between Bristol and Barrington, Warren has a few pockets of stop-andshop action throughout the town. Celebrate the holidays at Linden Place

Simone’s (275 Child Street, 401-2471200, simonesri.com) and Bywater (54 State Street, 401-694-0727, bywaterrestaurant.com). Stop in one of these tasty destinations before or after your shopping spree, or just do double duty and grab gift certificates while you’re there. It’s hard not to miss imagine (5 Miller Street, 401-245-4200, imaginegiftstores.com), what with its façade showcasing oversized colorful cows sourced from Cow Parades around the nation. The three-story store is New England’s biggest gift shop, so chances are you’ll hit holiday gold here. For a more intimate experience, stop by Muse (279 Water Street, 401-289-2150, musehandcrafted.com) for a curated selection of handcrafted art, jewelry and baby gifts. A bit off the beaten path but worth the drive is the gift Barn at Frerich’s Farm (65 Kinnicutt Avenue, 401-2458245, frerichsfarm.com). In addition to fresh Christmas trees and wreaths, you’ll find fun stuff like ornaments, home décor and free cookies and hot cider throughout their open house season. Another worthwhile stop is the Mills at 30 Cutler (30 Cutler Street, cutlermill. com), a collection of studios and art spaces ranging from a custom weathervane maker to a pottery studio. BriStol Small town charm simply exudes in Bristol. The downtown area gets even prettier during the holiday season when oversized twinkling snowflakes hang high and bright over Hope Street. With a view of the water, easy street parking and tons of boutiques,

restaurants and historic sites all within walking distance, Bristol takes holiday strolling to new heights. linden Place (500 Hope Street, 401253-0390, lindenplace.org), right in the heart of town, decks its glorious halls and hosts a handful of holiday happenings. Also worth a stop is their yearround Museum Store, which features books about Bristol and Rhode Island, jewelry, toys and more. A few steps down the street brings you to Zenabelle (573 Hope Street, 401-396-9603, zenabelle.com), an all-natural health and beauty shop that stocks good-for-you makeup, skincare and a large range of personal items. While you’re there, grab an organic smoothie from their newly added-on Juice Bar, which should give you an extra boost as you continue shopping. Caron Jewelers (473 Hope Street, 401-297-3043, bristoljewelrydesigner.com) has a lovely selection of pre-owned watches, jewelry made from old Mount Hope Bridge tokens and custom engagement rings. As you work your way through town, make a stop at the new leaf Hair Studio (18 State Street, 401-254.9333, newleafhairstudio.com) to pick up high-quality hair products or a gift certificate for the stylish lady on your list. luna Sea (259 Thames Street, 401-256-0485, lunaseashop.com) has a unique selection of mystical-inspired jewelry, handcrafted gifts and organic chocolate. tiverton Somehow the holidays become less stressful as soon as you enter Tiverton. Barrington The town’s village center on County Road is charming any time of year, but really shines bright for the holidays. Lampposts get decked with illuminating garland and festive flags, and also provide a virtual road map for the shopping and dining opportunities that are in walking distance. The main drag of County Road (Route 114) and a handful of side streets are mostly made up of a series of plazas that offer plenty of free parking (as does the historic Town Hall). Speaking of freebies, be sure to pick up the Barrington Business Association’s annual Passport to Savings, a B-Town exclusive discount booklet, at participating merchants. Start by grabbing a coffee or hot chocolate at the Blue Kangaroo (328 County Road, 401-289-2292, bluekangaroori.com), a popular breakfast and lunch spot. Get Your Scrooge On The first name in Rhode Island theatre is Ebenezer - Scrooge, that is. If we had an official state play, it would be A Christmas Carol. Trinity Rep has been producing the show for 39 seasons, but believe it or not, the Providence theatre isn’t the only one in Little Rhody staging Charles Dickens’ classic tale. The Trinity production (trinityrep.com) is already up and running, but the Granite Theatre (granitetheatre.com) in Westerly has a production going up on November 27, and The Artists’ Exchange (artists-exchange.org) in Cranston is raising their curtains on December 10.
