GREETINGS FROM THE NORTH POLE A Rhode Island elf is making sure Santa doesn’t fall behind on his letters to kids Kids spend the whole year mulling over their wish lists to Santa, efforts that culminate in one impassioned plea to the man in the red suit. It’s only fair that Santa responds in kind, but he’s a busy guy, which is where Warwick-based Stephanie Paul of Santa’s Mailman (Facebook: Santa’s Mailman) comes in. Stephanie’s been helping St. Nick since 2011, creating beautifully crafted and individually personalized letters on official Claus stationery. “I realized that of all of the ways people bring Christmas into their homes after Thanksgiving, I never saw personal mail delivery service,” Stephanie says.

What started with a few Santa-approved letters for friends – delivered to mailboxes by elves or by Santa himself on Christmas Day – quickly caught on and grew to include Nice List Declarations. Last year Stephanie penned more than 160 custom letters. “My hope, especially for the kids, is that every Christmas they will read their collection of mail and know that they are special and that Santa has believed in them their entire lives. No matter the age, everyone deserves a letter reminding them that they are loved, someone is proud of them, and that the magic of Christmas is real.” Santa’s Mailman in Warwick sends personalized, Claus-themed correspondence to kids

RHODY HAPPENINGS

Off to the Thanksgiving Races Work up an appetite (or work off those leftovers) at these holiday 5ks November 23: Take a run through historic Pawtucket while thinking about the Pilgrims on Thanksgiving Day. The Rhode Island Family Turkey Trot 5k & Youth Run (FamilyTurkeyTrot.com) begins at the city hall at 10am, but if the kids are feeling antsy the youth fun run begins at 9:30am. November 23: The 32nd annual Newport County YMCA Pie Run (NewportYMCA.org) has been around for so long for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that nothing drives people to run more than the chance to win pie. The five-mile run starts at 8:30am, but you can also opt for the three-mile non-competitive walk. November 25: If a turkey trot on Thanksgiving isn’t

enough (or you really binged on that turkey this year) no need to worry. The East Greenwich Hill and Harbor Turkey Trot (MainStreetEG.org) will take you through East Greenwich with a 5k starting at 8:30am the Saturday after Turkey Day, and a slower one-mile fun run starts at 9:30am. Crafts, fun and music are added perks .  November 25: If you aren’t doing the fun run at East Greenwich Hill and Harbor, then you better swing your way over to St. Luke’s 18th Annual School Trot Off Your Turkey (StLukesRI.org) in Barrington. Lineup starts at 9:30am for the 5k run, with a 1.5-mile walk/run beginning at 10am. The best part? If you didn’t get enough turkey on Thanksgiving there will be a post-race turkey soup party with prizes. –Emily Lemieux

Bird Is the Word Raven encounters at Bristol’s Audubon Society make Thanksgiving weekend about more than just turkey Ravens have a bad reputation. Throughout the world, they’ve long been associated with unfortunate omens and mythic links to death, but a new member of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s (ASRI.org) Avian Ambassador program is changing that perception by using his inquisitive nature to woo visitors. Meet Zachariah, the curiously playful raven that has joined ten other rescued birds in inspiring the public to protect our state’s wildlife. “The best way to educate people about birds is to introduce them, whether that be in the field, in their backyards at their feeders or with our Avian Ambassadors,” says Audubon RI’s Director of Education Lauren Parmelee. “It’s nice that we have some so they can learn more about wildlife in Rhode Island, up close, without us taking anything out of the wild.” Ambassadors cannot return to the wild due to unique injuries, so the organization provides them with aviaries mimicking their natural habitats and diets, training with experienced handlers and new purpose by aiding Audubon Educators in inspiring others to connect with nature. Visitors will get to meet Zachariah at the Environmental

Education Center in Bristol where Audubon will host its Day After Thanksgiving event, after many of us have given thanks and feasted around – and on – another bird. While Lauren attributes the scheduling to convenience for families in search of fun activities, she adds, “Maybe we won’t talk about turkeys that day.” –Emily Buonaiuto HeyRhody.com

If you were to look at his filmography, you might assume from the work of local filmmaker Tom DeNucci that he’s more of a Halloween guy. But when Hollywood came knocking with the opportunity to direct actor Ed Asner, the director of several locally produced horror films was ready to trade spooky for Santa on his latest feature, Saving Christmas. “[They needed] to put together a Christmas movie very quickly,” Tom explains, “so they called me asking if I have any Christmas material.” He quickly turned around a script with his writing partner, Kevin DeCristofano, got notes back from the studio and in just seven days had a greenlit production to be shot on location in Cranston. The movie, about two kids trying to prove that Santa is real, had Ed Asner already attached, meaning

18

| Holiday Guide 2017

that they were able to write with him in mind as St. Nick. It also meant that Tom had to direct a living screen legend. “At first I was a little apprehensive about giving him direction, but then he started busting my chops,” Tom says. “He’s one of the funniest men alive, so I got it right away: he was there to have a good time. He made me feel comfortable by keeping things light.” The biggest challenge may have been making Rhode Island look like a winter wonderland… in April. The Cranston Fire Department worked a little movie magic of their own by spraying the Cranston Print Works with a flame-suppressing foam in place of snow. Not too bad for a Christmas miracle. Saving Christmas will hit DVD and Video On-Demand on November 21. –Tony Pacitti HeyRhody.com

Christmas tree ornaments tend to be more than just bright, shiny baubles we pull out of storage every December. More often than not, each decoration tells its own story, thanks to the memories we make around them each and every year. The most special of all ornaments are the ones handmade by ourselves and our loved ones, but that doesn’t mean DIY tree trimming should be relegated to the popsicle stick, glitter glue and elbow macaroni department. Local glass blowers are opening their studios to let visitors take a crack at forging their own delicate decorations. The Glass Station Studio (TheGlassStationStudio.com)

in Wakefield offers ornament classes on Saturdays until December 16, while Gather Glass (GatherGlass.com) in Providence will be holding workshops on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays right up through December 21. Thames Glass (ThamesGlass.com) in Newport offers ornament-making workshops as well through their “Make Your Own” Glassblowing Experience most weekdays and some weekends – they recommend calling ahead. It all adds an extra, personal touch to a classic holiday gift. Bragging rights that yes, you know how to blow glass now, is a nice added bonus. HeyRhody.com

A Very Rhody Holiday How to celebrate the most festive season in the Ocean State

Dashing Through RI

Block Island Holiday Stroll takes place November 24-26

Get in the car and explore some of the state’s most beloved holiday traditions

Barrington

Barrington spends three weeks decorating with 25,000 lights on lampposts and trees, and then kicks off the holiday season with a festival and tree lighting at Town Hall (Barrington.RI.gov) on December 2. The one-day event includes performances by Arts Alive, The Barrington Middle School A Capella Chorus and the Barrington High School Chorus. Plus, Santa arrives by fire truck, and there will be horse and wagon rides, hot chocolate, food trucks, letters to Santa and literally the magic of the season, though you’ll have to wait to find out what that is.

Block Island

You might assume Block Island hibernates for the winter, but you’d be wrong. The weekend after Thanskgiving is the Block Island Holiday Shopping Stroll (BlockIslandInfo.com), when Old Harbor lights up with festive cheer, especially the tree made entirely of lobster pots. Through the weekend, shops will be offering special deals, and every place you buy gets you entered into a raffle to win prizes on Sunday afternoon. There’s also a 5k Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 25, to help you burn off all of those leftovers. HeyRhody.com

A Very Rhody Holiday Providence Rink

Breakfast with Santa in Bristol on December 3

This seaside town does the holidays right, starting in November. On November 19, dive right into the season at the Christmas Snow Ball (Facebook: Bristol Christmas Festival). The gala at Bristol’s DeWolf Tavern will have cocktails, gourmet fare, a holiday auction and live music. That day is also when festivities start at Bristol’s Blithewold Mansion (Blithewold.org), which hosts possibly the state’s grandest holiday celebration. With the help of 80 volunteers, the mansion and grounds will be decorated in a Roaring ‘20s theme, including 49 decorated trees (a 22-foot-tall tree is in the entry, which holds 3,600 lights alone). Blithewold holds holiday teas, sleigh rides, events with Santa and festive fun nearly every day during the season. Friday nights are Sparkle!, when 22,000 lights illuminate the grounds, and there are carols, s’mores at the bonfire and lots of festivities. Linden Place (LindenPlace.org), another grand home in Bristol, also decks their halls and has nine designers creating gorgeous tablescapes for different rooms, plus tours and holiday events until January. True to its name, Bristol’s Grand Illumination (ExploreBristolRI.com) on December 2 will flip the switch on over 200,000 lights that adorn downtown Hope Street, including 35,000 of them on a 30-foot Christmas tree. The night will include holiday shopping, caroling and treats as thousands of people fill the streets. It’s also when the Bristol Merchants Association (Facebook: Bristol Merchants Association) annual Snowflake Raffle kicks into high gear. You get entries for every purchase you make, and on December 16, there’s a drawing for big cash prizes. December 3 is their annual Breakfast With Santa (ExploreBristolRI. com) at Mount Hope High School. On December 10, there will be a performance of Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales at St. Michael’s (StMichaelsEpiscopal.org).

| Holiday Guide 2017

Narragansett

Rhode Island’s favorite surf town goes all out on December 3 for the Narragansett Festival of Lights (NarragansettRI.gov), which is a whole day of festivities, including holiday trolley rides, a Jingle Bell Run on Narragansett Town Beach and festive treats. The Towers hosts performances and pictures with Santa all day, and there will be luminaria lighting up the sea wall. The main event at 5pm is the tree lighting, followed by a fireworks display. From December 2-10, Narragansett Theatre at the Pier (BrownPaperTickets.com) presents their own twist on A Christmas Carol, updated with music and topical humor. The Contemporary Theater Company (ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com) hosts their annual Christmas Cocktail Cabaret at The Towers on December 21, featuring carols, festive music and all the holiday cheer you can handle.

Newport

The City by the Sea does it up for the holidays, and not just at the Mansions (NewportMansions.org). Yes, you can see a 15-foot poinsettia tree at The Breakers, and other gorgeous decorations at The Elms and Marble House. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets, you can see The Nutcracker (IslandMovingCo.com) performed at Rosecliff. The city lights up in lots of other ways, too: at the Bowen’s Wharf Block Party (BowensWharf.com) on November 24, an illuminated boat parade will light up Newport Harbor and steel drums will create a Caribbean Christmas vibe while you shop all the sales. The tree lights up on December 1, and Christmas in Newport (ChristmasInNewport.com) kicks off, with events every day throughout the month. The Newport Holiday Stroll (NewportHolidayStroll.com) runs December 3-4 and 10-11, and there’s a festive Train to Santa’s Workshop (TrainsRI.com). There are concerts like the Messiah Sing (Swanhurst.org),

historic events like Christmas at Whitehall (WhitehallMuseumHouse.org), lantern tours, holiday teas and lots of appearances by Santa. Makes you wonder how he finds time to make all those toys.

Providence

The capital city has tons of celebrations happening, from plays and concerts (see p. 25) to art sales (see p. 57) and festivals. Mayor Elorza kicks off the celebrations with the City’s 2017 Holiday Celebration and Christmas Tree Lighting (ArtCultureTourism. com) on December 1-2, which features a tree lighting at City Hall and one at The Providence Rink, plus figure skating demonstrations, live performances and an artists’ marketplace. On December 2, walk on the wild side at the Roger Williams Park Zoo Winter Festival (RWPZoo.org), happening at the carousel in the park. There will be a visit from Santa, fun kids activities and more. One of the most beloved neighborhood traditions in the city is the Hope Street Holiday Stroll (HopeStreetProv.com) on December 3, featuring performances by local musicians, street performers, tons of food trucks and lots of holiday festivities, including an appearance by characters from Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker. And, of course, there are lots of ways to shop. Celebrate Downcity (InDowncity.com) is hosting a block party on Small Business Saturday, November 25, with shopping specials, kids’ crafts and an appearance by Santa. The Lady Project Winter Marketplace (LadyProject.org) at The Arcade will celebrate #WomenOwnedWednesday with 15+ vendors from female-owned businesses, plus food, drink and mini-massages. The Providence Flea Holiday Market (ProvidenceFlea.com) happens at Hope High School on December 3, 10 and 17, and brings together vintage vendors, artisans and creative makers for a unique shopping event. IT’S ALL ABOUT

YOUR JEWELRY

Tiverton

Westerly

Tiverton has New England charm for days, but never more so than during the holidays. Their annual Holiday Bright Night (TivertonFourCorners. com) on December 8 is an evening of festivities when the shops stay open late and offer refreshments, with entertainment at Four Corners Meeting House. One-of-a-kind gifts are in abundance at Tiverton’s annual Arts and Artisans Festival (TivertonFourCorners.com), December 16-17. Fourteen local artists set up shop inside the Meeting House at Tiverton’s historic Four Corners, selling homemade items such as glass sculptures, pottery, bags, candles, jewelry, accessories, woodwork and paintings. On the second day of the festival, Santa will read to children and take pictures, with proceeds going to Tiverton Food Bank. The festive environment at The Meeting House includes lights, lanterns, holiday greens and wreaths as well as hot cider and live music.

Ring in the holiday season on November 24 with Santa’s Arrival in Westerly (OceanChamber.org). The streets of downtown will be adorned with luminaria and holiday decorations, and there will be hayrides and caroling before the main event: the Jolly Old Elf himself. The next day, Ocean House in Watch Hill reveals their Christmas Village and hosts their annual tree lighting ceremony (OceanHouseEvents. com). Throughout the next month, the luxury hotel hosts dinners and brunches with Santa and events like gingerbread house workshops. The Chorus of Westerly (ChorusOfWesterly.org) hosts two beloved annual events: the Messiah Sing on December 2, and Christmas Pops on December 16-17, a spirited holiday concert. Nearby at Granite Theatre (GraniteTheatre.com), they’re staging A Christmas Survival Guide from December 1-23, a funny show about coping with holiday stress through music, song and laughter.

Wakefield

Wickford

Because of its concentration of food, stores and attractions, Main Street in Wakefield is one of the state’s best destinations for strolling and shopping while leaving your car behind. Use that to your advantage on December 2 during the Wakefield Winter Wonderland! (Facebook: Wakefield Winter Wonderland). Not only do merchants host a scavenger hunt, they do so while reenacting classic holiday movie scenes in their stores. Outside, the streets are illuminated with thousands of Christmas lights, especially after the tree lighting. There will be holiday rides on the South County Trolley, roving carolers and photos with Santa. Rhode Island has a lot of Christmas Carol productions that happen every year, but none like Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge at the Contemporary Theater Company. In this farcical show, which runs December 1-17, Mrs. Bob hates her kids, and Scrooge believes the world would be better off without him. HeyRhody.com

Wickford might just win the award for most Rhode Island holiday celebration. During the Wickford Village Festival of Lights (WickfordVillage. org), Santa arrives by boat in Wickford Harbor. But that’s just the beginning of the fun. There’s also an Elf Parade, hayrides with Santa, a tree lighting with a performance by the Lafayette Band and the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus, a living nativity, ice sculptures made in real time, and more. Merchants stay open late these nights, and Smith’s Castle (SmithsCastle.org) hosts their annual Christmas at the Castle, showcasing what the holidays were like in the 18th century. On December 9, the North Kingstown Chamber (NorthKingstown. com) hosts their annual Breakfast with Santa, when they transform North Kingstown High School into a winter wonderland, with cookie decorating and holiday storytelling, plus some face time with the man in red himself.

A Very Rhody Holiday What Cheer! 10 weird, wonderful ways we do the season better in the Ocean State

1

We Even Dress Up Our Pests. The first and truest sign of the holidays is when Nibbles Woodaway – better known as The Big Blue Bug who presides over the Thurbers Avenue curve on I-95 – puts on his antlers, his big red Rudolph nose and his glowing lights.

most famous work The Polar Express, which comes to life every holiday season. Leaving from the Blackstone Valley Train Depot (BlackstoneValleyPolarExpress.com) in Woonsocket, the magical Christmas train includes storytelling and song, holiday treats and a personal gift from Santa himself.

2

4

We’re Into – Really Into – Charles Dickens. It’s not the holidays until you hear some beknickered boy in a Rhode Islandey English accent proclaim, “God bless us, everyone.” Trinity Rep (TrinityRep.com) has been performing A Christmas Carol for 40 years, but that’s far from the only production in the state. Artists’ Exchange (Artists-Exchange.org) in Cranston and Stadium Theatre (StadiumTheatre.com) in Woonsocket stage their own annual versions, while Narragansett Theater at the Pier (BrownPaperTickets.com) adds topical humor to theirs.

3

We Have the Real, Actual Polar Express. Famed children’s book author Chris Van Allsburg lived in Providence for years, and it’s where he wrote his

Christmas at The Breakers in Newport

We Sleep with the Seven Fishes. La Vigilia, better known to non-first-generation Italians as the Feast of the Seven Fishes, is Rhode Island’s own delicious pescatarian celebration. Traditionally a Christmas Eve meal, it’s served all the way from Federal Hill – at places like Pane e Vino (PaneEVino. net) and Massimo (MassimoRI.com) – to Westerly at the Weekapaug Inn (WeekapaugInn.com), for a few weeks in December. The seven-course meal doesn’t just celebrate the holiday, it celebrates the state’s most delicious natural resource.

5

We Don’t Black Friday, We Block Friday. Crowds return to Block Island by the thousands for the weekend after Thanksgiving. Old Harbor lights up for the Holiday Shopping Stroll Weekend

(BlockIslandInfo.com), but the signature attraction is that famous illuminated Christmas tree made of lobster pots. Just remember: if you saw but didn’t Instagram, it didn’t happen.

6

We See Visions of Sugarplums. Lots of Sugarplums. We have three beloved annual performances of The Nutcracker: Festival Ballet’s (FestivalBallet.com) production at PPAC brings in people by the thousands; the enchanted production at Rosecliff by the Island Moving Company (IslandMovingCo.org) sells out weeks in advance; and Heritage Ballet’s (HeritageBallet.com) brings crowds to Woonsocket every year.

7

We Get Calamari in on the Christmas Spirit. There’s no particular delight like seeing the fishing fleet at the Port of Galilee dressed up for the season, with Christmas lights, tinsel, giant plastic Santas… you might even see a real Christmas tree on the bow of a ship. Just don’t put Santa hats on your dinner plate. That’s taking it a little too far.

8

We Deck Our Mansions. How do you make The Breakers (NewportMansions.org) even fancier? Add a massive Christmas tree, completely made of poinsettias, and throw in some holiday concerts. The Elms: add a Gilded Age streetscape in the ballroom, with a topiary horse pulling a sleigh. As for Blithewold (Blithewold.org) in Bristol, they host holiday teas and sleigh rides, and light up the grounds for illuminated evening celebrations. Maybe we should consider changing our state slogan to “Rhode Island: We put glitter on our glitter.”

9

We Glide Into the Winter. A surefire way to add some charm to the coldest season is by ice skating at one of three outdoor rinks: The Providence Rink (TheProvidenceRink.com) at Alex and Ani City Center, the Newport Skating Center (NewportSkatingCenter.com) and the Washington Trust Ice Rink (OceanCommunityYMCA.org) in Westerly. That’s in addition to all of the unofficial skating rinks, like the Legion Way rink in Barrington, that you have to know a guy to find. It is Rhode Island, after all.

10

And We Plunge Right Into the New Year. Nothing says fresh start more shockingly than a January 1 deep dive in freezing water, like the Special Olympics Penguin Plunge (SpecialOlympicsRI.org) at Wheeler Beach in Narragansett and the massive Newport Polar Plunge (Facebook: Newport Polar Plunge 2018) on First Beach. With so many Rhode Islanders jumping in that day, you might be in the minority if you prefer to stay warm and dry on the first of the year.

Farm-to-Table Turkey Seven farms that sell locally raised birds

1

Pat’s Pastured (PatsPastured. com) in East Greenwich offers free-range Standard White Turkeys, a type of turkey known for having a generous amount of juicy white breast meat. To complement your beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece, Pat’s also offers their homemade turkey gravy and chicken bone broth. Turkeys are sold frozen and can be picked up in East Greenwich or Pawtucket.

2

Exeter’s Wild Harmony Farm (WildHarmonyFarm.com) is onestop shopping for your Thanksgiving table. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, they raise cattle, dairy sheep, chickens, pigs and – during the fall season – turkeys.

3

A small, family-owned farm in Wakefield, Thorns and Acorns Farm (FarmFresh.org) specializes in free-range poultry – specifically, chicken and Heritage breed turkeys. This breed has more in common with its wild ancestors than it does with turkeys raised for industrial agriculture, and is known to be especially juicy and flavorful.

4

Start a new Thanksgiving tradition by getting a turkey from Helger’s Turkey Ranch (FarmFresh.org) in Tiverton. Since 1939, this familyrun farm has been raising delicious

turkeys for families to enjoy yearround. The secret to their fresh and tasty birds? It could be the proximity to the briny ocean air, though nobody knows for sure.

5

Founded in 1657, Browning Homestead Farm (BrowningHomesteadFarm.com) in Wakefield has been family owned and operated for eleven generations. They’ve transitioned from milk and dairy production into raising livestock, including wonderful Thanksgiving turkeys.

6

Named after their loyal farm dog, Cyra’s Farm (CyrasFarm. com) in Little Compton specializes in the Narragansett turkey, native to Narragansett Bay. These turkeys are able to run and fly, so they have larger legs and thighs that produce especially dark and juicy meat. Cyra’s also offers the more commonly known Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys.

7

The cage-free poultry and eggs from Baffoni’s Poultry Farm (BaffonisPoultryFarm.com) in Johnston has made its way to restaurant menus across the state. They raise thousands of chickens and 1,200 turkeys on their family farm. They sell whole birds, and also separate breasts, legs and more help their customers avoid arguments at the table over who gets what.

A Very Rhody Holiday The State House’s Christmas tree came from Big John Leyden’s Farm in West Greeniwch last year

Oh Christmas Tree Farm Local farms to pick out your festive fir

Healey Farm (Facebook: Healey Farm) in North Kingstown reopens for weekends November 24-December 23. You can cut down your own tree or take home a selection of precut options, and they’ve also got handmade wreaths to choose from. Big John Leyden’s Tree Farm (BigJohnLeydens.net) isn’t just a clever name. With more than 100,000 trees in multiple varieties – not to mention that the provided the State House with its 20-foot beast of a tree last year – this West Greenwich farm is overflowing (or should we say overgrowing) with holiday cheer. The Christmas Farm at Exeter’s Tilted Barn Brewery (TiltedBarnBrewery.com) offers the one-two punch of getting to pick out a locally grown Christmas tree and sample some of Rhode Island’s most talked about craft brews. HeyRhody.com

In Chepatchet, Petersen Tree Farm (Facebook: Petersen Tree Farm) kicks off its tree cutting season the day after Thanksgiving. Guest will be provided with a saw – in case you can’t find yours in the shed – and can pick out wreaths made from locally grown greens. Tagging has already started at Henry’s Christmas Tree Farm in Hope (Facebook: Henry’s Christmas Tree Farm) but that doesn’t mean you’ve missed out. There’s still plenty of time to pick, tag and cut between now and Christmas. Bedrock Tree Farm (BedrockFarm. info) in Wakefield will be open daily the day after Thanksgiving with precut and cut-your-own options. And if you need some stocking stuffers, they also offer a variety of products made on-site from fir needles, like soaps, candles and salt scrubs. Holiday Guide 2017 |

The Giving Season Lend a helping hand to Rhode Islanders in need this season by donating or volunteering By Tony Pacitti

Give Your Time

Keep Families Fed

Volunteer in a Soup Kitchen

TapIn (TapInRI.org) in Barrington serves the East Bay community as a source for everything from basic needs like food, toiletries and household essentials to volunteer transportation for those who need help getting to appointments. Another crucial item to volunteer: time. Lend a hand by greeting clients, unloading and organizing donations or even helping out with the organization’s IT and social media needs. They’re also happy to take on high schoolaged volunteers around the holidays.

The East Bay Food Pantry (EastBayFoodPantry.org) in Bristol runs a grocery-store-style food pantry which allows its clients to pick and choose products based on their household size and needs. To do this they purchase food from the Rhode Island Food Bank at rates as low as five cents a pound for some items, meaning monetary donations go a long way towards their efforts to support the community. Since these needs aren’t unique to the holidays, they’re always looking for new sustainable donors – those who contribute monthly – to keep their shelves stocked all year long.

For over 40 years, Amos House (AmosHouse.com) has been serving the Providence community through a galaxy of programs, including a soup kitchen, literacy and workforce training, financial assistance and transitional housing. They welcome donations of food and household items like bedding, hygiene items and strollers, and their soup kitchen takes volunteers aged 14 and up for breakfast and lunch shifts.

Provide Holiday Essentials Child & Family (ChildandFamilyRI.com) in Middletown has been hard at work supporting Rhode Island families for over 150 years, driven by the central belief that a community is at its best when it accepts responsibility for all of the people in it. For the holidays they’re looking for donors to provide a gift basket of non-perishable items for a family’s Thanksgiving meal or to purchase presents off of a child’s holiday wish list. Monetary and gift card donations are accepted, too, and there are plenty of other opportunities for donors and volunteers to help throughout the year.

Make Holiday Wishes Come True Children’s Friend (CFSRI.org) is the state’s oldest child welfare organization, providing family support services through their offices in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls. During the holiday season they work with volunteers to provide items like warm clothes, coats, toys and games for families all over Rhode Island as part of their annual Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive (November 23-December 22). Last year they were able to make wishes come true for 5,050 kids thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

Lend a Hand in a Kitchen

Make Meal Baskets

Crossroads RI (CrossroadsRI.org) is the largest homeless services organization in the state and has been serving Rhode Island’s most at-risk citizens since 1894. They offer housing and shelter for families and individuals, as well as educational assistance such as Certified Nursing Assistant training and GED preparation. As with all of these organizations, monetary gifts go a long way, but volunteering time to help out with laundry, moving clients into a new home or helping in their kitchen are all welcome ways for you to lend a hand.

Happy Baskets (HappyBasketsRI.com) is committed to making sure that every family in the Cumberland area has a happy holiday by assembling and distributing holiday food and gift baskets in November and December. To fill the more than 700 baskets they’re expecting to distribute this year, they’re looking for everything from fresh and canned food items, toys and monetary donations for all of those Thanksgiving turkeys. You can also pitch in by volunteering for basket making and delivery shifts, so be sure to check their website for dates.

Give All Year Long

Feed 300 Families

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank (RIFoodBank.org) has been serving the state for decades, distributing food to 60,000 people each month through a network of 167 partner agencies. There are plenty of items you can donate, including one-time and monthly cash donations, an old car and even stocks. And you know those Mr. Potato Head license plates? The Food Bank gets $20 from each of them. Be sure to save the date for their Holiday Food Drive Open House on December 9.

The North Kingstown Food Pantry (NKFoodPantry.org) is always accepting non-perishable food donations and monetary contributions, and they update their website and Facebook page with items they need each month. For Thanksgiving, they’re looking for help in putting together food baskets to provide a traditional holiday meal plus food for the following week for the more than 300 families requesting aid.

Take the Giving Spirit to the Next Level Serve Rhode Island (ServeRhodeIsland.org) is the hub for volunteerism in Rhode Island, with a mission to get Rhode Islanders engaged with volunteer and service work throughout the state by connecting them with over 60 non-profits and AmeriCorps programs. As with all of the groups mentioned here – and the many more doing positive work for our communities – they’re committed to making Rhode Island a better place for everyone in it all year long.

Help Furry Friends Don’t forget your four-legged friends while looking for ways to do good in your community. Animal shelters like the Providence Animal Rescue League (PARL.org), the Potter Rescue League in Middletown (PotterLeague.org) and Animal Rescue Rhode Island (AnitmalRescueRI.org) in Peace Dale are always looking for volunteers to lend a helping paw.

Fast Workouts for Busy Elves Fitness classes that fit a lot of burn into a short time By Jen Senecal

While it’s no secret that the holiday hustle may be the craziest time of the year, tending to your own state of mind doesn’t have to be cut from the schedule. Work off the stress and through the endless cookies in no time with one of these high-impact, heart-pumping workouts. THE HOLY TRINITY While December’s schedule is a trifecta of running around, spending money and wrapping gifts, the triple combo of PE Fitness (PEFitnessStudio.com) in Pawtucket’s Cardio TRX Bootcamp is running around, spending calories and wrapping yourself up in a whole lotta muscle. The class, which incorporates TRX suspension training, running hills while weighted up and utilizing wreckbags for cleans, curls, presses, setups and squats, will leave you feeling like you can tackle your to-do list (and anyone who gets in the way of it).

TWINKLE TOES Watching your tipsy uncle bust out some sweet moves during your holiday party won’t help your winter waistline, so get your own groove on at Cumberland’s Fore Court Racquet and Fitness (ForeCourtRI.com)

Core Studio in Pawtucket

SH’BAM class. An hour of fun dance routines paired with chart-topping hits, familiar classics and Latin beats is the perfect way to stay sociable (read: hold yourself together) during the most manic time of year.

JINGLE SESSION If you’re tired of listening to throwbacks that include stringing up lights and Grandma being run over by a fictitious animal, head on over to Circuit at Enerje Fitness and Wellness (EnerjeRI.com) for songs that will get you on your feet and out of your car. Spend an hour blasting through intervals of sleds, dumbbell work, wreck bags, plyometric boxes and body weight exercises to build muscle and burn fat while blasting tunes you’ll head out of the class humming.

GLOVE UP While it’s hard not to want to punch, well, everything this time of year, save your aggression for the ultimate stress-relief workout that is Boxfit of Newport (NewportBoxfit.com). Sweat it out for an hour of jump roping, shadow boxing, pad work, heavy bag work, plyometrics, ab exercise and other heart-pumping, mind-clearing moves. And then go holiday shopping with a smile (and without a mugshot).

WORK, SIP, REPEAT

CAROL OF THE CYCLERS Skip the mad dash to the mall for a revved-up race on the bike at Core Studio’s (CoreFitProv.com) Tabata/ Interval Cycling session in Pawtucket. Twenty minutes of spin is followed by 64 rounds of heart-rate hiking tabata exercises, which include free weights, kettle bells, BOSU balls, gliders and a clear mind for online holiday shopping.

Move the spiked eggnog over to the guilt-free menu by getting yourself inside A & D Fitness (AAndDFitness.com) in Johnston to HIIT It Hard. Challenge your body to an hour of physical strength training combined with cardio by alternating between one minute of free-weight work and one minute of bodyweight movements. This high-intensity “active rest” workout that includes things like running with dumbbells and sweating your ass off will put that holiday cocktail in your hand later as the perfect recovery.

The fall and winter have delicious things in store

WINTER (PRODUCE) IS COMING Indoor farmers markets keep you eating with the season One of the summer’s greatest pleasures is straight-from-the-farm produce, preferably purchased from one of the dozens of weekly farmers markets around the state. That pleasure, though, doesn’t have to end just because the weather is colder. Indoor farmers’ markets kick into gear this month, selling everything from late harvest vegetables like winter squash and apples to freshly baked treats, locally made condiments and fresh meat and seafood. There are four around the state that happen on Saturday mornings: The Mount Hope Farmers Market (MountHopeFarm.org) in Bristol; the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market (Facebook: Pawtucket HeyRhody.com

Wintertime Farmers Market) at Hope Artiste Village; the Coastal Growers Farmers Market (CoastalMarket.org) at Lafayette Mill in North Kingstown; and the Aquidneck Growers Market (AquidneckCommunityTable.org) at Newport Vineyards in Middletown. Additional markets happen on other days in Providence, Peace Dale, Woonsocket and Warren. Farm Fresh RI (FarmFreshRI.org) is the hub to find out more, not just about farmers markets, but about food makers around the state. So yeah, summer is over, but deliciousness is not. Just don’t try to sunbathe after you shop. The Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market Hope Artiste Village Holidayat Guide 2017 | 69

1. Provencal Bakery and Café (ProvencalBakery.com) in Middletown serves a pie with a crust that’s neither too flaky nor too thick, with cinnamony pumpkin goodness on top. 2. Carpenter’s Farm Stand (CarpentersFarmStand.com) in Wakefield keeps HeyRhody.com

the puree light and smooth, offering up a pie that won’t weigh you down. 3. Sweet Berry Farm (SweetBerryFarmRI.com) in Middletown opts for the spicy approach with cloves and allspice, producing an intensely flavorful pumpkin puree.

4. Sweet Cakes Bakery (SweetCakesBakeryRI.com) in Peace Dale offers up a custardy puree with a shortbread crust to round it off. 5. Pelloni Farm (Facebook: Pelloni Farm) in Hopkinton boasts a pie with subtle flavor that showcases how fine

pumpkin works just on its own. 6. The Beehive Pantry (TheBeehiveCafe.com) in Bristol takes a bold chance on this fall staple, amping up the pumpkin and crafting a light and sweet crust that could even stand alone as a cookie. Holiday Guide 2017 |

Game Day Like a Champ Cheer on your favorite team at local sports bars By Bob Curley

These Rhode Island restaurants and pubs are winners when it comes to keeping the games showing and drinks flowing all season long.

New to the Providence bar scene is The Black Sheep (BlackSheepRI.com). With a menu full of bar standards – like a full category of “loaded things” – alongside creative sandwiches, you’ll want to get familiar with the new bar on the block. Must-try item: The Vietnamese Grinder (sliced pork butt, sambal mayo, cilantro and pickled carrots) Pairs best with: A Paloma (tequila, lime, grapefruit juice and soda) Best choice for: Catching their Sunday Drag Brunch before kickoff

Mews Tavern (MewsTavern.com) in Wakefield is a South County favorite, with 69 beers on draft in the main bar. The menu is bar-food heaven with everything from burgers and sandwiches to Mexican food, barbecue and pizza. Must-try item: The Pink Panther calzone (stuffed with chicken, prosciutto, Fontina cheese, pink vodka sauce and pasta) Pairs best with: Unita Hop Nosh Best choice for: Catching a game in a bar where football isn’t the main focus Once a historic speakeasy, The Charlestown Rathskeller (TheCharlestownRathskeller.com) has blossomed into a sophisticated restaurant and pub where live music and a plethora of activities ensure that the action goes on even when the football games end. Must-try item: Heaping portions of their famous fries topped with shortrib gravy Pairs best with: Warsteiner Dunkel Best choice for: Getting your own game on before and after the game

Mews Tavern

The Charlestown Rathskellar

A big, friendly Irish bar and seafood restaurant, Twin Willows (TwinWillowsRI.com) is a hangout for Narragansett locals and visitors alike. There’s plenty of room around the huge bar on game days. Must-try item: A Reuben piled high with house-cooked corned beef Pairs best with: Guinness on draft Best choice for: Catching the games after a morning on the beach Boneheads Wing Bar (BoneheadWings.com) in West Warwick has 11 TVs and more than 60 flavors of boneless and on-the-bone wings, including gluten-free and vegetarian varieties. Must-try item: Wings with “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” peach habañero sauce Pairs best with: A 100-oz draft beer tower Best choice for: A ton of wings Bristol mainstay Judge Roy Bean Saloon (JudgeRoyBeanSaloon.com) keeps it classy with an extensive selection of wines by the glass, craft cocktails, a cigar bar and a polished wooden bar right out of the Old West.

72

| Holiday Guide 2017

Must-try item: Narragansett beerbattered cheese curds Pairs best with: Redneck Sangria Best choice for: Watching the game with non-beer-drinkers Brick-oven Neapolitan pizzas are dished out at Federal Hill Pizza (FederalHillPizza.com), a Warren storefront with a large, multilevel dining room and a small but lively bar in the back. Must-try item: Build-your-own Al Taglio pizza with a choice of 26 toppings Pairs best with: House-brewed Lager 94 Best choice for: Pizza, beer and football Billy’s (BillysLLC.com) in Barrington combines a friendly atmosphere with white-tablecloth dining. It’s the kind of place where you’ll feel fine whether you’re ordering burgers and pizza or brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Must-try item: Lobster sandwich sautéed in butter and served with spinach and bacon Pairs best with: A mimosa or Bloody Mary Best choice for: Brunching your way to kickoff HeyRhody.com

Photography (L) by Stacey Doyle, (R) by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent

Rick’s Roadhouse (RicksRoadhouseRI.com) in Providence’s Jewelry District knows sports, barbecue and whiskey well. With a meat-forward menu that includes gluten-free options, this is a great spot for casual fans and face painters alike. Must-try item: The Triple Fun (1/3 rack of baby back ribs, 1/4 pound of brisket and 1/4 pound of pulled pork) Pairs best with: A local brew and a whiskey chaser Best choice for: Sharing a heaping helping of barbecue with a fellow Pats fan

The Original Toy Story

There’s nothing more elegant than an evening at the ballet - unless, of course, that ballet is performed in a mansion. Every holiday season, Newport’s Island Moving Company (IslandMovingCo.com) stages The Nutcracker, the beloved tale of toys come to life on Christmas Eve, at Rosecliff. Tickets sell out weeks in advance, likely because the performance hits all the right feels: the magic of the holidays, in one of the state’s most picturesque settings.
