The Family You Choose Five reasons why a holiday with your friends is exactly what you need this year
Farm Market & Cafe Open Daily 8am-6pm
Thanksgiving TO GO Menu Available online and in Market Order Deadline: November 20th
The holidays are that special time of year when families gather to eat a lot of food, catch up with one another and hope that nobody brings up politics. But as a younger generation is coming into adulthood, the idea of family is changing. What better way to celebrate that than with a Friendsgiving or a Friendsmas feast? Here are five reasons why doing so will enrich your holiday season, or at the very least give your family a case of FOMO.
1. The CuRe FoR WhaT aLes ya Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones with a family full of beer snobs who would scoff at the idea of a holiday feast being wasted on a fridge full of Coors Light. If not, you’re probably not looking forward to a long meal of extolling the virtues of the growler you brought from Long Live Beerworks (425 West Fountain Street, Providence. LongLiveBeerworks.com) or Tilted Barn Brewery (1 Helmsley Place, Exeter. TiltedBarnBrewery.com) to a deaf crowd of pilsner philistines. At Friendsgiving you can talk about hops until your beards fall off. 2. The Rhody FaCToR When it comes to hostess or Yankee Swap gifts, you can’t go all in on Rhody kitsch if you’re celebrating with family out of state. “It’s just what I’ve always wanted!” said no one from Tuscaloosa ever upon receiving a “Keep Warren Weird” t-shirt. Luckily if you’re throwing a satellite celebration with friends in the 401, you can go full post-ghost Scrooge at places like Craftland (212 Westminster Street, Providence. 401-272-4285, CraftlandShop.com) without having to avoid the outline of our awesome little state. HeyRhody.com
3. iT’s sTaR WaRs spoiLeR season, ChaRLie BRoWn! Everybody has a friend or a friend of a friend who works at Hasbro, and the amount of spoilers that get printed on toy packaging is staggering. Invite this person to your Friendsgiving. Who knows, maybe with a little luck, a Jedi mind trick and a few extra rounds of mulled cider, you could find yourself in possession of some juicy plot details for Star Wars: Rogue One before it hits theaters. 4. iT’s aLL in The Mix No one likes Christmas music. In fact, people dislike it so much that when Hanson was like “Hey Thanksgiving, want a selection of maddeningly catchy and endlessly annoying songs about turkey?” Thanksgiving responded with a curt “Hard pass” and rescinded Hanson’s invitation. On the upside, Rhode Island is bursting with amazing musicians to add to your party playlist, sparing your guests from the inescapable assault of holiday tunes. But if you have to do Christmas music, The Brown Bird Christmas Album (BrownBird.Bandcamp. com) is pretty essential December listening. 5. youR FRiends aRe FaMiLy, Too The rulebook is evolving when it comes to what defines family, and there’s no better example of that than when friends come together to forge their own traditions alongside or as an alternative to what has been rigidly defined as “a day for family.” Instead of catching up in between one chaotic holiday tradition and another, set aside some time for a low stakes day of food and good cheer with the people who are just as important as the crazy clan you were born into. –Tony Pacitti

Old is New Again The Ornament Rescue League turns forgotten treasures into new memories Christmas ornaments have a
particular way of stirring old memories, not just of the holidays in general, but of specific moments and people. Often times we receive ornaments as gifts from loved ones, and they become a kind of yuletide totem, representative of the things and people we’ve loved, and sometimes lost. “My mom and I were yard sale buddies,” says Cheryl McCarthy. “It was our Saturday routine for years.” On those Saturdays they would take extra care to spot old Christmas decorations and tree ornaments. Cheryl’s mom passed eight years ago, but the yard sale quests continued. One day, as she was loading a box of 500 old Christmas lights into her car, she had a realization. “I sat there reflecting on my mom and all the fun we had, and somewhere along the way it dawned on me. We were giving these ornaments a new chance to shine,” she says. “We’re rescuing these memories.” It wasn’t long before Cheryl started the Ornament Rescue League with the simple, but inspiring idea of turning old Christmas ornaments into shiny new ones, ready for gifting and creating new memories. But selling them wasn’t enough. Cheryl and her crafty partners donate all of the profits to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital. In its first year, the Ornament Rescue League raised $900 for the hospital. Last year it made $3,200. When people at yard sales heard what she was doing, they couldn’t bring her their boxes of old ornaments fast enough. “It’s been such a wonderful journey,” Cheryl says. “Everybody wants to contribute and this is such a simple, silly way to do it. It has a wonderful feeling around it.” It doesn’t hurt that the ornaments are completely adorable either. OrnamentRescue. Blogspot.com; Find them on Etsy and at the Providence Flea on December 4. –TP

Meet Horace Vose, the Turkey King of Westerly
Horace Vose, the turkey king of Westerly, preparing a holiday bird for President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902

| Holiday Guide 2016
The executive order to spare a turkey in the days just before Thanksgiving is one of those quirky American traditions, right up there with Punxsutawney Phil’s weather predictions, that make for softball news that the whole family can enjoy. While there’s still some debate as to which President started this tradition – many point to Truman for this super serious matter – there is absolutely no debating that the close relationship between the leader of the free world and Thanksgiving turkeys can be traced back to the 1870s and a turkey farmer from Westerly named Horace Vose. In 1873, Horace sent then-President and future $50 bill superhunk Ulysses S. Grant one of his turkeys. Never weighing less than 30 or more than 50 pounds, Horace’s birds were slaughtered, dressed and shipped express directly to the White House. I dare you to try sending a 40-pound dead animal to the President today (no guys, seriously, please don’t try that). Westerly’s “Turkey King” had the honor of providing the First Family with their Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys for 40 years until he died in December of 1913. His last Thanksgiving proved somewhat scandalous when a former congressman from Kentucky had the audacity to send President Woodrow Wilson a turkey of his own. Though no one knows which bird the president and his family feasted on that Thanksgiving, it’s worth noting that Horace’s bird, Rhode Island born and bred, beat out the pretender’s at a respectable 37 pounds. –TP HeyRhody.com

A Very Rhody Holiday 25 ways to celebrate the most festive time of the year By Julie Tremaine
Trinity Repertory Company is putting on its 40th production of A Christmas Carol

see A Christmas Carol...
Rhode Island’s most beloved holiday tradition is seeing Ebenezer Scrooge’s heart grow three sizes, live on stage. While Trinity Repertory Company in Providence (TrinityRep.com) is staging its 40th annual production through December 31, it’s not the only theatre company in the state to host the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet To Come. granite Theatre in Westerly (GraniteTheatre.com) stages its annual production of A Christmas Carol, A Musical, an original musical adaptation by company Music Director Stephen DeCesare from November 25-December 23. artists’ exchange in Cranston (Artists-Exchange.org) has its 13th annual production of the show from December 8-17. The stadium Theatre in Woonsocket (StadiumTheatre.com) uses the theatre’s historic 1926 Wurlitzer organ in their production, on stage from December 2-11.
musical revue with dance numbers, big band music and a living nativity finale.
3.
Tag your own Christmas Tree
There are farms all over Rhode Island where you can venture out months in advance to choose your own tree, rather than leaving it up to fate and the big box stores whether you’re going to find the perfect pine to be the centerpiece of your entire holiday celebration… No pressure or anything. The Rhode island Christmas Tree grower association (RIChristmasTrees.com) has a complete list of tag-your-
own farms all over the state.
4.
glide into the season
You might not be Michelle Kwan, but that shouldn’t stop you from welcoming winter with one of our most quintessential cold weather activities: ice skating. The state’s various skating rinks open on Mother Nature’s timetable, but should be ready for visitors in early December. Check out Providence’s alex and ani City Center (AlexAndAniCityCenter.com) for your annual dose of winter-in-the-city warm and fuzzies, or the newport skating Center (NewportSkatingCenter. com) for an oceanside experience.
Embrace your inner Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinsky at the Newport Skating Rink
2.
... or expand your Theatre horizons
Believe it or not, A Christmas Carol isn’t the only holiday play gracing Ocean State stages this month. Wakefield’s Contemporary Theater Company (ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com) offers the comedic variety show An Evening with Donner and Blitzen from December 2-24. In Warwick, Ocean State Theatre Company (OceanStateTheatre.org) stages It’s a Wonderful Life: The Musical, a family friendly adaptation of the classic film, from December 1-27. Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket (StadiumTheatre.com) has two productions in November and December. Elf the Musical Jr., based on the Will Ferrell movie, goes up November 18 and 19. On November 26, Stadium Theatre Christmas brings a big, Broadway-style HeyRhody.com

Channel international Traditions
Celebrate like the Irish at a Christmas Celtic sojourn, a live performance of the popular radio show A Celtic Sojourn, at The Vets in Providence (TheVetsRI.com) on December 16. Brown University presents their annual, beloved Latin Carol Celebration (Brown.edu/Academics/ Classics/Events) to the First Baptist Church in Providence on December 5, featuring classic Christmas carols performed by Brown acapella groups in, you guessed it, Latin.
11.
eat, drink and Be Merry
See the Providence Ballet Theatre’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas in Providence (December 16) and Wakefield (December 18)
5.
have Visions of sugarplums
You might not consider yourself a ballet aficionado during the rest of the year, but at the holidays, all bets are off. Once you’re watching sugarplum fairies and toy soldiers come to life during The Nutcracker, it’s straight down the childhood nostalgia rabbit hole. Festival Ballet (FestivalBallet.com) stages their production at the Providence Performing Arts Center from December 18-20, and Heritage Ballet performs theirs at Woonsocket’s stadium Theatre (StadiumTheatre.com) from December 17-18. island Moving Company (IslandMovingCo.org) presents The Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff, performed in an actual mansion, which sells out so quickly that they’ve added more performances: November 25-27 and November 29-December 2. providence Ballet Theatre (ProvidenceBallet.com) brings the classic poem ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas to life at the McVinney Auditorium in Providence on December 16, and at The Prout School in Wakefield on December 18.

get on the Christmas Train
Think the only holiday transportation is a sleigh? Think again. Santa has been spotted on two different trains in Rhode Island. The newport polar express (DiscoverNewport.org) runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, November 20-December 25. On board, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while everyone from conductors to elves ensure a merry experience, including a reading of the story itself. Woonsocket’s Blackstone Valley polar express (BlackstoneValleyPolarExpress.com) runs November 18-December 23, and offers various surprises in the Dasher, Dancer and Prancer cars.
7.
hoof it
The holiday season has more eating and drinking than any other – and right around December HeyRhody.com
26, you start feeling it in your waistband. Get on your feet and get moving for the east providence Turkey Trot (Active.com) on November 19. On Turkey Day, work off those calories at the Family Turkey Trot (FamilyTurkeyTrot.com) in Pawtucket or the st. Luke’s Trot off your Turkey 5K (StLukesRI.org) in Barrington. Don your finest holiday regalia for the downtown Jingle 5K (DowntownJingle5K.com) in Providence on December 4 – it will make you feel less guilty about eating all of those cookies that were meant for Santa.
8.
go Caroling
Remember the good old days when people actually went Christmas caroling? On the West Side of Providence, it still happens on the Sunday before Christmas, December 18. West side Caroling (WBNA.org) gathers a group of spirited carolers – sometimes hundreds of them – to walk the neighborhood singing to anyone and everyone who will listen. Neighbors come out with egg nog and treats, and it’s a wonderful life for everyone involved.
9.
have holiday high Tea
Maybe formal tea service isn’t your cup of tea the rest of the year, but there’s something magical about china cups and perfectly decorated tiny cakes at the holidays. In Watch Hill, ocean house (OceanHouseEvents.com) offers a Madeline Children’s Tea on November 25, and a Children’s Christmas Tea: The Nutcracker on December 11. Providence’s Lippitt house Museum (PreserveRI.org) offers Victorian Holiday High Tea on Sundays, starting November 27. Blithewold in Bristol (Blithewold.org) offers Children’s Holiday Tea on Monday afternoons in December, and Afternoon Teas during the week throughout the
To adequately prepare for the holidays, you’re going to have to up your cooking game. Middletown’s Newport Cooks (NewportCooks. com) is hosting a holiday Baking and Cooking with Chef sharyn class on November 19. Things are sure to get delicious at sweenor’s Chocolates holiday open house (SweenorsChocolates.com) on December 4 at their Wakefield location. The annual event features live candy cane making demos, samples of candy and hot chocolate, and photos with Santa. Bring your Martha Stewart game to The artists’ exchange gingerbread house decorating Contest (Artists-Exchange.org) in Cranston on December 3, where you and your family build a house from scratch and compete for glory and prizes. To do some good for others, visit the Rhode island Food Bank holiday Food drive & open house (RIFoodBank.org) on December 3 – bring canned goods and partake in the festivities.
12.
sing a Kwanzaa song
Mixed Magic Theatre (MMTRI.com) is known for its challenging and thought-provoking programming – but at this time of year, it’s all about celebrating. They’re bringing their 17th annual performance of A Kwanzaa Song in Concert to their stage in Pawtucket on January 1, celebrating African culture, unity and heritage.
13.
get Crafty
Handmade decorations add a certain kind of sparkle to your celebrations. Channel your crafty side at The Farmer’s daughter (TheFarmersDaughterRI.com) in South Kingstown for DIY workshops in holiday centerpieces, wreaths and holiday plant containers, offered throughout November and December. Flowers By semia (FlowersBySemia.com) in Providence offers a Wreath Workshop on December 4 and a Winter Terrarium Workshop on December 10. The talented gardeners at Blithewold Mansion (Blithewold.org) offer a Wreath-Making Workshop on December 2.
14.
Celebrate on the silver screen
You may have your annual viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life with your family, but there’s nothing quite like a holiday tradition on the big screen. Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket (StadiumTheatre.com) is hosting a free viewing of A Christmas Story on December 22. Holiday Guide 2016 |

Let’s face it: December is the last time you’re going to enjoy being outside until the tulips are blooming again. Make Black Friday great again
Don’t spend all of your holiday cash on the internet the day after Thanksgiving – save your budget and support the local economy while shopping at Small Business Saturday. A block party to Celebrate downcity (InDowncity.com) is happening on Westminster Street in Providence on November 26. In addition to the fabulous small shops on the street, there will also be an outdoor pop up by the Providence Flea, libations by Trinity Brewhouse, photos with Santa, food trucks and performances on the Grant’s Block stage. Raise your Voice
There’s no more instant way to channel holiday spirit than to make a joyful noise, like at the Chorus of Westerly (ChorusOfWesterly.org) Messiah Sing on December 3 or their Christmas Pops on December 18. The Rhode island Civic Chorale and orchestra (RICCO.org) presents A Jubilant Bach Christmas on December 3 in Providence and December 4 in Newport. add some sparkle To your Weekend
There’s no reason your holiday shopping has to include long lines in crowded malls. Neighborhoods all over the state have made the search for the perfect gift a much more pleasant experience. In Bristol, the festivities kick off on Holiday Preview Weekend, November 18-19, with luminaria lining the streets, stores staying open late and lots of festive fun. That weekend kicks off Bristol’s Snowflake Raffle, where you get a ticket for a cash prize for every $25 you spend at a participating merchant (and double tickets on Preview weekend). Through December, there are festive events happening every weekend, including shuttle buses between Bristol, Warren and Barrington on Black Friday. hope street in Providence (HopeStreetProv.com) is expanding their beloved Holiday Stroll – this year, it’s happening on December 4, but there are fun things happening every weekend between Black Friday and Christmas, like trunk shows, cooking demos and pop up shops.

Walk in a Winter Wonderland
Pawtucket’s Winter Wonderland (WinterWonderlandPawtucket.com) is a sight to see – Slater Park comes to life with over 500 trees decorated with twinkling lights, as well as Victorian homes done up for the holidays, visits with Santa and family-friendly entertainment. In Tiverton, there’s a different kind of wonderland: the Re-Tree exhibit in Tiverton Four Corners (TivertonFourCorners. com). People craft trees out of recycled materials and install them on the grounds of the Four Corners Meeting House for a must-see art exhibit.

Wreath Design 101 How to make a fresh and festive holiday wreath at home Written and Photographed by Meghan H. Follett
There’s nothing like the smell of fresh evergreen in your home at this time of year. Try making your own this season, with the help of Sarah Partyka from The Farmer’s Daughter in South Kingstown.
STEp 1: GAThEr YOur SuppLiES You will need a 12-inch wreath hoop (the standard door wreath size that can be found at your local craft store), some floral wire (Sarah recommends 20 gauge for the best flexibility and strength) and a pair of garden shears.
1
prO Tip
To help your wreath last until spring, hang outside, preferably on the north side of the house where you get less direct sunlight. When it rains, toss the wreath into the yard and let it soak up the moisture.
STEp 2 : GAThEr YOur GrEENS Sarah clipped these greens from trees around The Farmer’s Daughter. She recommends searching in your backyard for the freshest (and cheapest) natural greens. Try to use a variety of branches in different textures and colors. Sarah uses a base of Frasier Fir, which has the best needle retention.
3
2
STEp 3: prEp ANd BuNdLE Your wreath will be made of thick bundles of two different kinds of greens: the base green (Frasier Fir) and various greens of different colors and textures. This helps you sprinkle the visual interest throughout the wreath. Both kinds of branch packages should be trimmed to about 12 inches long and all should be about the same thickness. Gather bundles by the cut ends. You will need ten bunches of each kind.

HeyRhody.com
SEASONAL STYLE
4
STEp 4: ATTAch ANd ALTErNATE Starting with a bundle of regular Frasier Fir, align the branches so they angle away from the circle at about a 30 degree angle. Then, latch the last two to three inches of the branches to the wreath hoop by looping the wire around it a few times until it feels secure. Next, place a variegated bunch on top of the previous one, at the same angle so it sticks out a bit. Make sure to leave two to three inches sticking out on the trimmed end once again to secure the bundle to the hoop. Keep attaching your bunches one by one in this fashion, alternating the varieties.
5
STEp 5: FiNiShiNG TOuchES Once you’ve attached your bundles, alternating as you go, tuck in the last by lifting up your first bundle and making sure the stems of your final bunch are snug. Make sure there aren’t any empty spots where you ended – chances are you may need to put one more bundle in there. Feel free to mix up that last one to help it blend. After you attach it, make sure to loop your wire around a few times and tie it off to secure it to the hoop. Voila! You’ve made your own fresh and fragrant wreath.
The Farmer’s Daughter is offering wreath making classes November 25-December 9. 716 Mooresefield Road, South Kingstown. 401-792-1340, TheFarmersDaughterRI.com

Made with Love Craftland celebrates handmade objects and the people who make them
A Downcity Original Downcity is brimming with independentlyowned boutiques, restaurants and cultural centers. In the heart of it all is Craftland, a fabulous showcase of handmade goods made by local and national artists. From jewelry and clothing to housewares and wall art, Craftland offers the largest collection of American handmade in Rhode Island. It all started in 2002 when Craftland opened as an annual holiday craft show with just 25 artists. “We were a pop-up before pop-ups were popular,” says co-owner and jewelry designer Devienna Anggraini. Devienna and coowner Margaret Carleton, also a Providencebased artist, had a clear mission from the get-go: to showcase affordable, approachable and all-handmade art. Year after year, the roster of featured artists and volunteers grew, as

is tax-free. “It’s a 7% discount everyday. We encourage people to buy more art!” Devienna says with a laugh. Plus, Craftland’s website offers behind-the-scenes info about featured artists and an online shopping cart.
Community of Artists Today Craftland features about 120 artists from the USA, with roughly more than half hailing from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. “It’s a unique business model. We’re essentially a collective of small businesses,” Devienna explains. “We offer business advice to the entire community of Craftland artists. Many have gone on to open their own storefronts or online shops; we’re thrilled to have played a part in their success.” A pioneer in the indie craft movement in New England, the colorful shop boasts upwards of 40 jewelry makers. “We have one of the largest collections of artisan jewelry in the state,” she says. Items that depict Providence and Rhode Island – jewelry, baby gifts and art prints to name just a few – is another product line that Craftland is known for. “We get outof-state visitors every day looking for unique souvenirs,” Devienna says, pointing out that the storefront is in walking distance of most hotels and universities. “People love that these items not only say Rhode Island, but are also made in Rhode Island.” Another thing to love about Craftland is that the entire store
A Handmade Holiday The holidays are always an extra special time at Craftland. “People still remember us as that holiday pop-up shop,” Devienna says. “While we support artists all year long, the holiday season will always have a special meaning to us.” To celebrate, Craftland hosts a festive monthlong Holiday Extravaganza that includes a fresh selection of work by 150 artists. The celebration kicks off on Friday, November 25 with a party that gives customers the opportunity to mingle with artists and snap up some one-of-a-kind gifts. On December 16, a Community Fundraising & Holiday Celebration will announce the recipient of Craftland’s new annual $1,000 grant. “We continue to support non-profits and schools that empower women and focus on arts making.” she says. “Supporting the creative community is at the heart of Craftland’s core.” From showcasing new artists to making art approachable and affordable for customers, Craftland continues to be a completely unique Providence experience. Almost Too Pretty to Eat Tips on holiday table setting from a local party planner Kristin Walcott-Matthews not only knows how to serve great party food, but also knows how to set a festive table. Her company, Northeast by Southwest, caters and decorates parties all over the state. Here, she created her dream Thanksgiving tablescape and gave us some pointers on how to do it ourselves for the holidays –Julie Tremaine
prep is Key For any dinner or party I host, I lay out the table the night before. This allows me time to polish, clean and account for everything I need. It’s a huge time and stress saver the day of, and allows me to focus on the food and last minute details.
reuse and recycle I always try to create centerpieces that can be reused. In spring and summer, I use potted plants in pretty containers in lieu of cut flowers. After the event, the plants can go straight into my garden. In this case, the pumpkins will be roasted and turned into pies and soups. The grape vine was taken from an old wreath.
Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
Break Out the Good Stuff I love any excuse to bring out good china and silver. I am very fortunate to have inherited my motherin-law’s lovely china from the ‘60s, and a silver set with a very Rhode Island history. My mother-in-law’s grandfather was a silversmith who immigrated from England. He worked his way up to become the superintendent of Gorham Silver in Providence. Every birthday and Christmas, he would give each of his granddaughters a piece to add to their set. Not only do vintage details like these add elegance, they provide wonderful stories to tell your guests.
delight in the details A formal place setting or place cards is an easy way to add formality. They make your guests feel like you pulled out all of the stops for them. I love unexpected items for place cards. These are simply faux leaves from the craft store that I spray-painted gold and used a paint pen to write my guests’ names.
Think Outside of the holiday color Box I love using non-traditional colors for the holidays. Fall is always brown, orange and yellow. Such a snooze! Think outside the box for your color palette. Rich jewel tones, or in this case, soft forest colors are fabulously appropriate for the season.

A visit to Gasbarro’s Wines is more than just a stop for a bottle of wine. It’s an experience. It can be educational, where you learn a little (or a lot) about wine regions and winemakers. It can take you around the world, skipping through the wine offerings of five continents. It can even take you back in time to 1898, when the wine shop first opened on Atwells Avenue, and get a taste of the values that are still at the core of the business. “We aim to make it a different, even fun, experience for customers,” says

Holiday Flavors
Your guide to the season’s most delicious tastes
Photography by Katie Leclerc
Bird is the Word The holidays are a time for tradition, and Fellini Pizzeria has an appetizing tradition all its own. Every Thanksgiving Eve they make a Thanksgiving Pizza complete with succulent roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce on a whole wheat, NY-style crust. The oversized pizza is not only limited in quantity, it’s only available through preordering. Trust us, this is a tradition you won’t want to skip. 166 Wickenden Street, Providence. 401-751-6737; 2190 Broad Street, Cranston. 401-467-5992, FelliniPizzeria.com –Grace Lentini
HOLIDAY FLAVORS
Festive Feasting Our favorite holiday foods are back around RI, but not for long By Grace Lentini
The holidays are a time to indulge. Indulge in cheer, indulge in holiday events and, most importantly, indulge in holiday food. Enjoy the flavors of the season while you can.
What’s the best part of Thanksgiving? The leftovers, which can get eaten too quickly. Thank goodness for East Ferry Deli’s Thanksgiving Sandwich. It’s piled high with sliced turkey, whole berry cranberry sauce, fluffy stuffing, lettuce and mayo on whole wheat bread. It’s everything you want for quintessential Thanksgiving flavor, and it’s not just limited to one day. The only thing you have to worry about is fitting it all in your mouth. 47 Conanicus Avenue, Jamestown. 401423-1592, EastFerryDeli.com Sweet Berry Farm cooks up a Butternut and Winter Squash Lasagna that’s perfect for any holiday potluck or as a vegetarian alternative to the poultry packed season. Ripe butternut and winter squash are pureed and layered on top of lasagna noodles, topped with a Parmesan béchamel sauce and finished with another lasagna layer topped with ricotta cheese. 915 Mitchell’s Lane, Middletown. 401This Buche de Noel will be the star of your holiday party

CHRISTmAS TREATS Sweet Cakes Bakery in Peace Dale is known for their sumptuous cakes. This time of year is particularly sweet because they start taking orders for their Buche de noel. This decadent dessert rolls a moist chocolate cake with fresh whipped cream into a giant yule log. To top it off, handmade meringue mushrooms complete the enchanted forest feel. 1227 Kingstown Road, Peace Dale. 401-789-5420, SweetCakesBakeryRI.com This year instead of leaving Santa milk and cookies, consider leaving him a milk and Cookies Cake from Sweet Indulgence. They take vanilla cake, layer it with chocolate mousse and cover it in vanilla buttercream. Then, they cover the sides with pieces of chocolate chip cookies and chocolate chips, and top the whole thing with mini chocolate chips. Make sure to save a few slices for yourself;

BOOzY BLISS Every winter, Narragansett Brewing puts out their Porter. This easy-todrink-brew has a mild chocolate flavor in the background. There’s even a touch of hoppiness in there to balance out the subtle smokiness and chocolaty sweetness. 401-437-8970, NarragansettBeer.com Take a break from your holiday to do list and stop by Avenue N American
Kitchen for their none of Your Beeswax cocktail. They take cinnamon bark bourbon and add a frothed egg white, a little lemon for freshness and acidity and stir in Ten Mile Apiary Honey, which is made right in their neighborhood in Rumford. The whole thing is garnished with a skewered piece of honeycomb. 20 Newman Avenue, Rumford. 401-270-2836, AvenueNAmericanKitchen.com
SWEET SIPS Nothing beats sipping hot chocolate in the crisp, cold air. Add some candy canes and whipped cream and you’ve just kicked up this classic. That’s exactly what Benefit Juice Bar and Cafe has done with their Peppermint Hot Chocolate. They start with dark and dreamy chocolate, add your choice of milk, soy or almond and top it with freshly whipped up cream, sprinkled with crushed candy canes. 404 Benefit Street, Providence. 401-274-6403, BenefitJuiceBar.wixsite.com/Providence Apple season isn’t over just yet. While you still can, head over to The Beehive Café for their Candy Apple hot beverage. They take freshly pressed local apple cider and add house made caramel to it. It’s then steamed until piping hot, topped with whipped cream and drizzled with more house made caramel. 10 Franklin Street, Bristol. 401-396-9994, TheBeehiveCafe.com HeyRhody.com

Sugar and Spice Everything is nice about Apple Pie Sangria
Because Life Is Too Short to Wear Boring Jewelry!
by Emily Dietsch
Throwing a holiday bash can be exhilarating, exhausting and intimidating. Sure you have your go-to drink concoctions, but ‘tis the season to try something new. We got a sneak peek into Nara Lounge’s tempting and easy-to-make seasonal sangria, and it’s worth a taste (or two). We’re in the middle
of spiced drink season. Not only at coffeehouses, but also at your friendly neighborhood watering holes. Half the populace is on board with it, and the other half wants to smash every glass they encounter like a pumpkin on the street. To those readers who fall into the latter category, please check your prejudice for 60 seconds. One, there is a right way and a wrong way to do the spice trend. And two, the drink featured here – an Apple Pie Sangria from Nara Lounge – has been served for more than nine

Serves plenty Nara’s Joseph Tohme keeps his restaurant’s exact recipe tight to the vest, but outlined the essentials for folks to DIY at home (see below). Don’t worry, as precision is beside the point. Sangria is a kitchen sink, “what’s on hand and what you like” libation. For a batch at home, I made a pitcher based on one bottle of dry white wine. I advise you to do the same, but play around with the rest to suit your taste. Pro tip: Try swapping in a non-alcoholic sparkling cider for the ginger ale. • Triple sec • Peach schnapps • Ginger brandy • Fresh lemon juice

To make cinnamon simple syrup, just add powdered cinnamon or cinnamon sticks at the beginning of the simmer to infuse. In a large pitcher, add all the ingredients and stir to blend. Add ice (optional), then top with ginger ale (or sparkling cider). Give it one more quick stir and pour into wine glasses. Garnish each with a cinnamon stick.

years, making it something of an OG of spiced drinks. “It started off as one of our seasonal specials when we first opened,” General Manager Joseph Tohme told us. “It was such a hit that we kept it as a mainstay.” Following Nara’s renovation last March, they updated their bar program to use more house-made, organic ingredients – which meant that the sangria got an update, too. Behold, a spiced cocktail made without pumps from a dubious bottle of factory-made syrup. Consider the bar set.

Season’s Eatings Locally-made cookies make the holiday so much sweeter by Grace Lentini
With all the hustle and bustle of wrapping, gifting and merriment, there’s not always time to bake up holiday cheer. Luckily there are bakeries and cafes around the state creating some amazing cookies. Being good little elves, we sampled some of their most delicious and decorative treats. We found six that would make a wonderful gift for Santa, a hostess or yourself.

With a frosting made of white chocolate that created a beautiful blank canvas, these pleasantly soft and chewy sugar cookies from Sweet Lorraine’s Candy Shoppe hit the spot. Each was beautifully decorated with a different theme that made them almost too beautiful to eat. 211 Waseca Avenue, Barrington. 401-694-1128, SweetLorrainesCandy.com
This perfect-for-dunking gluten-free cookie from Eva Ruth’s had different textures of plump raisins, oatmeal, chocolate chips and sweet frosting. One of our staff members commented how oatmeal cookies remind her of the holidays. Well, ‘tis the season. 796 Aquidneck Avenue, Middletown. 401-619-1924, Stores. EvaRuths.com
The amount of joy brought about from sinking our teeth into these gingerbread cookies from Colvitto’s Pizza and Bakery cannot be exaggerated. With each one individually decorated, the cookies were soft and somewhat chewy, providing a delicious experience made even better by the creamy frosting. 91 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 401-783-8086

Snowflakes aren’t just reserved for the outdoors anymore. Now you can bring these chocolate pepper snowflake cookies from Provender Fine Foods inside. These festive gingerbread cookies are actually available year-round at Seven Stars Bakery, and for good reason. They’re exactly what a gingerbread cookie should be. Chewy with a hint of real ginger that was not overpowering, the star shape was perfect for the top of a cookie holiday tree. Locations in Rumford and Providence. 401-521-2200, SevenStarsBakery.com
Lightly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, these macarons from g-Cafe were baked to please. Need a wakeup call? Nibble a creamy Mocha-Hazelnut cookie for a burst of caffeine. Feeling fruity? Citrusy Passion Fruit will leave you refreshed. But our favorite flavor – Carrot Cake with savory cream cheese filling – didn’t disappoint. 100 Dorrance Street, Providence. 401-632-4904, ProvidenceG.com
