Finding the Way Back to Health
Woonsocket Health and Rehabilitation Centre provides compassionate care for short-term recovery and long-term care
N
othing is more important than having a happy and healthy family. That’s why, when it comes to finding a facility to care for a loved one, whether it’s for a short rehabilitation or for long-term care, it’s important to choose a place that puts family first. Woonsocket Health and Rehabilitation Centre is an independently owned facility that offers rehabilitative care, long-term care, dementia care and hospice. “My family has owned and operated Woonsocket Health since we first opened in 1975,” says VicePresident Peter Pezzelli. “More and more nursing facilities are owned by corporations. We’re proud to be one of the remaining few family-owned facilities.” That family philosophy extends to their staff, too, some of whom have been working at Woonsocket Health for over 30 years. The facility, which gets excellent annual surveys from the Rhode
Island Department of Health, has four different components. Their new shortterm rehabilitation center offers postsurgical recovery, orthopedic rehab, cardiac and pulmonary care, and a state-of-the-art rehabilitation studio that offers occupational, speech and physical therapy. The new wing features all private rooms with bathrooms and showers, an on-unit study and private function room for family get-togethers, plus complimentary telephone, cable and WiFi. “We pride ourselves on taking care of people when they’re most vulnerable and in need,” Peter says. “We help people get back on their feet and back to their lives.” The facility also offers long-term nursing care. Anyone who has been through the incredibly difficult process of finding a nursing facility for a parent or loved one knows that there are so many questions, and no easy answers. You want to find a place for your family
that still feels like home, but has excellent medical services and a staff that will treat your family like their own. It’s a challenge to find the right place, but not after touring Woonsocket Health and Rehab, and speaking to the staff there. You’ll feel better knowing that their family really cares about yours. “We help families get through the process of entrusting the care of a loved one to us,” Peter says. Residents can enjoy private or semiprivate rooms, common areas for relaxing and socializing, a chapel, a library and a full-service hair salon. When the weather warms up, their new patio and sitting area will be a pleasant place to sit outside and get some fresh air. There are daily activities, and round-the-clock nursing care. Woonsocket Health and Rehab also has a dedicated dementia care unit, with a specially trained staff and WanderGuard protection that prevents residents from getting lost, while not restricting their movement within the unit.
The center also offers compassionate hospice care. Comfort, dignity, and quality of life are the most important things. Patients receive round-the-clock nursing care with a doctor on call at all times. Family members have access to their loved ones 24 hours a day along with comfortable accommodations, meal service and a complimentary beverage cart. At a time when compassion and sensitivity count the most, Woonsocket Health and Rehab gives families everything they need to cope with one of life’s most difficult moments. “Compassion and caring is always a given,” Peter says. “You can’t be in this line of work otherwise. Being responsive to resident and family concerns, is something at which we work very hard. We don’t want to offer good rehab and skilled nursing services. We want to offer the best services possible, and we work toward that every day.”

Managing Your Health
Putting the Care in Healthcare How to manage and advocate for better healthcare By Jeanette St. Pierre
Your relationship with your doctor needs to be, well, healthy. From open and clear communication to how long you sit in the waiting room, your whole experience with your doctor should be based on mutual respect, trust and convenience. Here are a few ways to be your own healthcare advocate. Start with a Primary Your primary physician is the central hub of your healthcare. even if you’re “healthy,” you most likely have a network of doctors. Specialists like podiatrists, dermatologists and chiropractors offer hyper-focused attention while your primary physician provides and manages overall care. Your primary should be the main referral source for all of your specialists, as well as keep records of what occurred at those appointments. With that in mind, it’s critical that you select a primary that you can consider a partner in your wellbeing. if you’re doing your part as a good patient, you’re seeing your primary not just when you’re sick, but when you’re not at annual or semi-annual physicals. ongoing primary care and prevention require two-way participation, which means you need to be open and ready to make lifestyle changes if your doctor recommends them.
Finding a doctor Finding the right doctor, let alone the best fit for your needs and personality, might take some time. Your relationship with your primary is one of the most important you’ll have in your life, so there’s no need to rush or settle until you’ve found the right one for you. one important criteria in narrowing your selection is the location of the practice. You’ll need to be within a brief driving distance if you’re sick or need to see your primary doc suddenly, so be sure to start your search somewhat near your home. there are plenty of ways to get a referral, be it word of mouth from your social circle of friends and family, or a recommendation from someone in your existing medical network. think about it – you can ask anyone from your neighbor to your dentist for a recommendation. if this doesn’t pan out, you can always venture online and weed through the Yelp-like review sites like healthgrades.com. When you finally select one, think about your first appointment with the doctor as an opportunity to learn about the doctor, his or her education and medical training and office policies. if you’re compatible with the doctor and you feel at ease in his or her presence, there are still a few more questions to ask yourself. Will you trust the doctor’s recommendations? Do your appointments run on time or do you wait for long periods of time each visit? not respecting your time can be a deal

breaker when it comes to sticking with a doctor. How convenient is the practice? Do they have early, late or weekend hours? if getting to the doctor is in itself an issue, then you need to find a practice that’s better suited for your schedule.
Being a good Patient even the best doctors can’t help bad patients. Like any good relationship, the patient-doctor one has to be completely based on trust. So that means if you drink a glass of wine each and every night, you’re not rounding down and selecting the 1-2 drinks per week checkbox at your visit. no one knows your body better than you, and no one can help you stay healthy with a thought-out lifelong wellness plan like your doctors.
acceSS to recordS there’s a classic episode of Seinfield where elaine can’t get treated for a rash because she’s developed a reputation for being a difficult patient. She tries to peek into her doctor’s tightly guarded file while he tells her she shouldn’t be looking at. While the scene
is hilarious, it couldn’t be farther from the truth. According to the Health insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HiPAA) Privacy rule, patients have a right to inspect, review and receive a copy of their medical files. Some tech-savvy doctors even offer access to a secure online portal where you can find lab and imaging records.
Second oPinionS if you require surgery or have a life-altering diagnosis, you should always consider a second, even a third, opinion. More opinions might give you more information, and when it comes to your health more is always better. Just keep in mind that you want to do this in cooperation with the original diagnosing physician. You want one team on your side, not opposing teams that might present conflict.
do your reSearch While you don’t want to be consumed with looking up every ailment you encounter, you should do your research and become as informed as you can if something continues to bother you. if you have arthritis, as an example, read up on it. While you can’t change the condition, you can help to potentially reduce further discomfort by eating foods that don’t cause inflammation, doing specific exercises or maybe getting physical therapy. there’s endless ways to stay informed such as websites like WebMD, irL support groups or online forums via Facebook. Learning more about your ailments from people that also have them can be just as beneficial as talking to your doctor.
expand your network by talking to practitioners you trust. Your chiropractor, like Dr. tom at northeast Chiropractic in Providence, can recommend other doctors

Common rhody Ailments
Statewide Health Concerns Watch out for these afflictions common among rhode islanders By Grace Lentini
Living in rhode island has its benefits: long sandy beaches, exquisite dining, small yet vibrant downtown areas. But guess what? there are also some health risks that every rhode islander should know about. We’ve put together some things to look out for, and how to prevent them. tick-Borne diSeaSeS think of the perfect day outside: the sun is shining, you drive to a forested trail and start hiking to your heart’s content. You return home, turn on the shower, strip down and there it is: a tick, and it’s embedded in your skin. now is the time to act. take some tweezers and pull that little sucker all the way out, head and all. Phew. that was a close call. if that tick had been embedded any more than 24 hours, Lyme disease, rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, tularemia and ehrlichiosis could have been transmitted. in the United States, Lyme disease is common, and it’s concentrated in the northeast and upper midwest. Moreover, 96% of confirmed cases were reported from 14 states, including ri. there were 570 cases in ri in 2014 alone. the symptoms from tick-bourne diseases range from a bulls-eye rash at the bite site to headaches, joint pain and fever to more severe symptoms from an untreated infected bite such as inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, problems with short-term memory and nerve pain. Performing tick checks after being in tickprone areas is the easiest way to catch ticks early on. ticks tend to embed themselves in areas where clothing is tight to the body such as the sock and undergarment line. Another fashion forward and prudent option to prevent bites is to tuck pants into socks. Spraying clothing with Permethrin is also a viable option – it’s an effective chemical against ticks and also long-lasting through multiple washes. And don’t forget your four-legged friends. Pets are just as susceptible to tick bites as we are. Make sure pets are up-to-date with pest repellant, consider getting them vaccinated and if they start to show any symptoms take them to the vet. For more information regarding ticks and prevention check out tickencounter.org.
breast cancer increases your risk; however, 80% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history or do not test positive for the breast cancer gene. of course, there are things you can do to catch the disease early if it is present – early detection is key, afterall. Performing a monthly breast exam is a great start. Getting an annual clinical breast exam is also an important prevention technique. if you don’t have any risk factors, getting an annual mammogram starting at 40 is essential. Symptoms and signs that you will want to catch early on include lumps in the breast tissue, skin changes to the breast and any sort of discharge from the nipple. this goes for men, too, who have an increased risk of succumbing to breast cancer because it is usually diagnosed at a later stage. gloriagemma.org.
alcohol and addiction rhode island may be the smallest state, but it tends to make national news. often touted as one of the best states for food, art and culture, it also ranks high in alcoholism and substance abuse.
Some sobering facts: rhode island has the third highest rate of alcohol-poisoning deaths in the country, and we have the highest use of illicit drugs in the country. the good news is that there are hard-working people at the forefront of research to determine why some fall victim to addiction and how to help them break the cycle. Brown University’s Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies is one option. they offer the opportunity for folks struggling with alcohol, marijuana and other substances to take part in trials and surveys, often with some compensation offered. Surveys range from how to best share information about adolescent substance abuse treatment to helping folks who are actively trying to stop drinking through medication. brown.edu Alcoholics Anonymous also has a vast network throughout rhode island. Being accountable for your actions through the support of a group is a tried and true method of sobering up. this worldwide organization has helped countless individuals recover from alcoholism. Al-Anon is a partner organization that helps the families and friends of alcoholics find support and understanding in a group setting. there are also myriad support groups available for those wanting to end substance abuse addiction in the form of narcotics Anonymous. rhodeIsland-aa.org, gpnana.org rhode island has the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to the health of our citizens. But one thing is for sure, because of our small size and interconnectedness, help is only a phone call, website or text away.

BreaSt cancer Although folks may only be thinking pink in october, breast cancer is at the forefront of disease concern in rhode island year round. Fact: more women are diagnosed with breast cancer in rhode island than in any other state in the country. Men can get breast cancer too, accounting for 2% of cases. HealthSource ri connects rhode islanders to affordable health care options
equipped you’ll be to make this very important decision. nhpri.org, uhccommunityplan.com USAA provides a huge portfolio of insurance and financial services to current and former service members and their families. Although health insurance is not one of them, USAA does make sure its members can shop for the best plans and prices with its uSaa health insurance marketplace. this online portal provides tools to compare and purchase plans for major medical, Medicare, dental, vision and long-term care. usaa.com of course, just having options to purchase a health plan is often not enough to get you or your family the care they need. things like dental, eye care, long-term care and prescription coverage can range from fairly limited to nonexistent in many employer-provided plans, and it takes a crafty shopper to close those gaps. Many people have AAA memberships just in case they ever break down on the side of the road, but may not realize all the services that come with that card. aaa Southern new england offers both dental insurance and longterm care plans to members. Ask the fitness expert
Denise Chakoian-Olney Owner, CORE Fitness Studios Let’s talk about New Year’s Resolutions. Do you have any advice for the people who flood the gym in January, only to lose steam in February? Look at the New Year not as a short term goal, but as a lifestyle change. We tend to start things guns blazing in January and it’s just all too much for most people. Small goals usually lead to much bigger ones for the whole year. Tell us about CORE’s fitness philosophy. We want to make fitness fun, but also help those who have those specific goals and needs at the same time. Our philosophy is based on creating a comfortable environment with professional staff that can lead clients to a better overall fitness level. We listen to what our clients want and need, instead of pushing them to do
something that they do not want to do, nor will enjoy. You’re a big fan of being strong, staying fit but also enjoying life. How do you achieve that balance personally? Everyone who knows me can tell you I am a lover of great food. It took me years to figure out how to get balance, to be honest, and once you do, your entire life changes. I believe that you can enjoy all things in your life in moderation and at the same time kick some butt in your fitness sessions! What happens at small group training? A small group training sessions have no more than five people. This allows people who would like to do personal training but cannot afford to, an opportunity to lessen the cost but still get individualized attention. Anyone
can join these groups, but if you have a friend, they are welcome to come with you! Your Wayland Square location was a well-known fitness center in Providence, but now you’ve got two new locations in Oak Hill in Pawtucket, and on Governor Street in Providence. Tell us about the differences between CORE Fitness and Cycling, and CORE Pilates Mind/Body. CORE Fitness & Cycling is primarily based on group fitness classes. One side is our state of the art Stadium Style Cycling Studio, and the other side is our Group Fitness Room where we do all of our Total Body Classes, Barre, Pilates Mat, Yoga, etc. In the same plaza, we have the CORE Personal Training Studio where we have a “Jungle Gym” type training studio with lots of toys and functional equipment to give our clients or small groups a great workout while in a Private Setting. Our Governor Street location is all of our small-group Pilates Reformer Classes and Pilates private training. We feel that that studio provides a serene and zen-like atmosphere, which is a nice balance from the

other studios. Our loyal clients have stuck with us through this transition, and we’re seeing a lot of new people join. I hope that they are loving our new studios! What are some classes your gym offers that we won’t find elsewhere? I think you will find lots of the same types of classes elsewhere because there are so many gyms now and also so close in proximity. The difference is the knowledge and the feel of what we offer. We are very focused on form, technique and growth. We care about each individual in our classes as well as our personal clients. Our classes “feel” different based on experience and knowledge. How can we get a taste of CORE without committing to a costly regimen? Your first group fitness class is free on us at the Cycling & Fitness Studio. At the Pilates Mind/Body Studio there is a discounted small group class coupon that is also offered online. Anything else you’d like to cover? I would like to thank my staff and our loyal clients for their continued support and trust in us. I hope that they are loving our new studios!

For a small state, Rhode island puts up some big numbers. The course of treatment will depend on your teeth but usually lasts anywhere from 3-24 months and involves changing aligners every couple of weeks.

Here’s his story. Oak Hill plaza is a magnet for health conscious foodies, boasting gourmet vegan food at Garden Grille, glutenfree baked goods at Wildflour and Ayurvedic indian cuisine at Rasoi. not surprising then, that someone should see a golden opportunity for a fitness studio there. Denise Chakoian-Olney, proprietor of CORE stUDiOs, found the perfect home for her new CORE Cycling + Fitness. the new place is a major upgrade, and Denise brought in the designers behind nYC’s hyper-trendy soulCycle to help her outfit it. the new digs include a 900 square foot studio for total body classes, ballet barre workouts, Pilates and more. the vibe in the studio is decidedly glitzier than your average spin class. it’s the type of place that might inspire SNL’s stefon to declare, “this place has everything”: slick new bikes arranged stadium seating style; a multi-colored light show accenting the room (and the mood); a pumping sound system; and a large tV screen displaying real time data about things like speed and heart rate from the individual cycles. this was where i decided to spoil a perfectly good saturday morning laying in bed by hopping on a bike and trying to keep up with “a more advanced group” of spin enthusiasts who have been training with Denise for quite a while.
the dimly lit studio had a dark, nightclub-type feel, with technicolor LED lights flashing and flickering along to a pulsing, pounding soundtrack. Denise was perched on her own bike at the front of the room, shouting out instructions through a headset mic and shuffling through a song selection that changed in pace and intensity along with the workout. As an avid runner and twice-over marathoner, i sometimes like to delude myself into thinking that i’m up to the challenge of any cardio workout. then, someone like Denise comes along and reminds me that i couldn’t be more wrong. First off, every aspect of the ride was constantly changing: we alternated between sitting and standing on the bike, along with switching between several different hand positions on the handlebars, varying resistance levels, speeding up and slowing down. All the while, Denise remained vocal, shouting instructions, offering words of encouragement and demanding more from some of her seasoned regulars over the thumping soundtrack. A little over an hour later, Denise wound things down with some cooldown cycling and a bit of stretching. it was that workout sweet spot: immensely challenging but still doable. i exited to the parking lot still sweating and panting. Walking towards my car, i noticed another student hopping on his bicycle to ride home and thought, You’ve got to be kidding me. i had to content myself with the thought that maybe i could beat him in a foot race. 727 East Avenue, Pawtucket. 401-273-2673, corefitprov.com. Five Minute stretches Easy movements to save you from your desk job By Courtney Denelle
Desk job problems, right? sitting in place for eight hours a day leaves us jacked with bodily tension: nagging neck and lower back pain, with tight hips and shoulders and a sluggish energy level, to boot. Enter office yoga. Practicing these modest poses throughout the day is a sure-fire means to reduce any achy breaky discomfort that’s inhibiting your awesomeness.

Beat the Winter Blues ten ways to keep your head up and health on track By Jen senecal
We all do it. During the dark and frosty months of winter, we hibersip on our hot mocha lattes and fall prey to every delectable comfort
penned such wise words. Whether it’s books on self-awareness, nutrition and wellbeing or the latest drool-worthy cookbook, positive life-transforming habits can be created by the simple words on a page.
food we can get our hands on.

it’s actually quite lovely when done in moderation. it’s when that layer of comfort that we bury ourselves so deeply in becomes a continuous trend that we start to let some pretty important things slip. Like exercise. And vegetables. And the need to interact with other humans and not just netflix. Falling into the winter slump is as easy as stalking your ex on Facebook. Fight back the funk with these ten ways to keep a little spring in your step and stay fit.
there’s no reason to avoid the cold and snow if you properly gear yourself up for the great outdoors. ice skate downtown at the The providence rink (2 Kennedy Plaza. 401-331-5544, alexandanicitycenter.com), hike the many gorgeous trails the state has to offer (find out more at exploreri.org), snowshoe your way to the park, learn how to ski or snowboard at yawgoo valley (160 Yawgoo Valley Road, Exeter. 401-294-3802, yawgoo.com) or invite your friends to a good ol’ fashioned snowball fight. While the temps may be dropping, your heart rate will be doing exactly the opposite.

Get up, put on something warm and step outside. take a walk, hop up and down or stand out there on a work break deeply inhaling the crisp air while soaking in the sun and sights of nature. this method single-handedly snaps me out of any energysucking, spirit-killing downward spiral of a day, yearround. Visit Blackstone Boulevard in Providence for a fantastic walking path, no matter the season.

5. find THe LigHT if there is one thing we lack during the winter months, it’s light. Finding it, absorbing it and even just existing in it after 5pm is like searching for your daughter’s missing Lego guy in Disney World. On the days when outer light is lacking, let your inner light shine. Balance your chakras with a great yoga class, or meditate into mindfulness at the providence Zen Center (99 Pound Road, Cumberland. 401-658-1464, providencezen.org).
6. drink up no, not whiskey – although there is certainly a time and place for that. A lot of our everyday sluggishness is directly related to how hydrated we are, especially in winter when we aren’t naturally as thirsty. Don’t skimp on your ounces. Keep a water bottle by your side and flavor up with fresh fruit to make it more inviting. sip on hot or iced tea with lemon or honey, or add a lime to some plain sparkling water.

Workout Groups
team Work Find motivation in the company of others with local fitness groups By John taraborelli
Misery loves company – but so does joy. Whether you’ve got to be dragged into the gym kicking and screaming or love working out so much that you’ve just got to share it with others, a fitness group might provide the spark you need. Here are some local options.
the narragansett running association is a duespaying (only $10/year) group of running enthusiasts who participate in weekly runs for fun or distance, train for races together and generally just cheer each other on. their weekly fun run starts every thursday evening at 6pm from Camire’s Athletic soles (20B Main street, Wakefield) through April (May-september they start from narragansett town Beach). they also do weekly track runs, a Wednesday morning sunrise run (5:30am at Bagelz, 90 Pershing Avenue, Wakefield), a saturday long run (start time and meeting place vary by week) and even a sunday morning newport run for their “over the bridge” members. gansettrunning.org
Hiking the aMC narragansett Chapter is the local branch of the Appalachian Mountain Club, which boasts nearly 90,000 members across 12 chapters nationwide. this group of nature-loving outdoor adventurers organizes outings for biking, paddling, kayaking and cross-country skiing, but hiking is really their breadand-butter. Despite their name, AMC narragansett organizes hikes all over the state. Members also engage in conservation activities and help tend trails for other hikers. non-members are welcome to participate, and events are led by qualified and trained AMC volunteers who ensure safety and environmental responsibility. amcnarragansett.org if you’re more hiking enthusiast than novice, the rhode island Hiking Club may be your crowd. this group engages in a variety of hikes from beginner to experienced, but they always emphasize embracing the challenge of something more than a casual stroll. Hikes are organized around the state (and even into nearby Connecticut), and some can take on pretty rough terrain (at least by Rhode island
standards). Members also occasionally organize teams for things like the Pell Bridge Walk/Run, which they billed as the club’s “most epic stream crossing yet” (or at least since the end of Ghostbusters). meetup.com/RhodeIslandHikingClub
Biking the rhode island Bicycle Coalition isn’t some group of weekend mountain biking enthusiasts; it’s a full-fledged advocacy organization for people who regard bicycling as a way of life. Get Your Bike On! is a twice-monthly event to encourage casual or aspiring riders who need to get more comfortable with biking, away from the spandexclad intensity of serious bikers. Once a month, the Coalition teams up with Providence City Hall for Bike the night, a nighttime ride showcasing various neighborhoods. their periodic Bike to Beer events are pretty much self-explanatory and, perhaps fittingly, aren’t organized on a regular schedule. ribike.org the narragansett Bay wheelmen might be the better biker gang for you if recreational and adventure riding are more your speed (unless crossing busy city intersections at rush hour is your idea of an adventure). Every sunday they crisscross Rhode island, eastern Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts for adventure rides that showcase areas one would seldom travel by
Motivate yourself to ride the whole east Bay Bike Path with the R.i. Bicycle Coalition
car. the Wheelmen also organize the annual Flattest Century in the East in september, a 100-mile recreational tour that’s been a local biking tradition for over 40 years. nbwclub.org
oTHer aCTiviTies if a leisurely bike ride or hike lacks the bone-crunching intensity and naked aggression you need to get those endorphins pumping, perhaps you should head out onto the rugby pitch. there are options on both the north and south ends of the bay with providence rugby and newport rugby. Both are members in the new England Rugby Football Union (nERFU), and the newport club has hosted the nERFU Cup tournament for the past several years. Members of both clubs range from serious players to eager novices and grizzled old timers, and they always welcome those who just want to learn to play. providencerugby.com, newportrugby.com
Hey Rhody! Don’t see a group here that interests you? Shape Up RI is a statewide exercise and weight loss program that provides the tools for you to organize your friends, families and colleagues into team fitness challenges. it’s based on the idea that teamwork and peer support play important roles in achieving fitness goals. shapeupri.org

A Different Kind of Political Race
Mayor elorza’s Running Mates Keeping up with Providence’s mayor at his weekly running club By tony Pacitti
it’s rare to see a political figure so committed to engaging with his constituents that he runs with them on sunday mornings. We sent a writer to Roger Williams Park in Providence to go on the run with Mayor Jorge Elorza.
Mayor eLorZa’s adviCe for new runners get the right shoes “People usually buy a pair of sneakers that look nice rather than one that fits their feet. so i really recommend going to a running shop to pick out some shoes that have the right soles and support. Don’t worry about them looking right or being the right brand.” run with a buddy or a group “i recommend finding a partner or joining a group. it’s completely different. When you’re running with a partner [you] have someone to motivate you, someone by your side relying on you being there. it makes all the difference in the world.” running is just as mental as it is physical “to be a runner you need to be mentally tough. Every runner has experienced when their body is telling them to stop, or their mind is telling them to slow down, but you just have to keep pushing through it.”
Members of the Mayor’s running group are walkers and runners of all ages
Every week, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza meets up with a group of citizens in Roger Williams Park for a three-mile run. i, on the other hand, am constantly making excuses not to run. “You just gotta start,” Mayor Elorza told me when we sat down to discuss his running group, which he’s been a part of since well before he was voted into office. “i love to run. You just focus on your breathing and your pace. i’ll think about the issues going on in the city, or in life. it’s meditative.” to be honest i love to run too, or at least i did when i was in it. For a while i was going out every other day, anywhere from three to seven miles, and that meditative element was huge. the physical benefits of running are all pretty obvious and important, but those moments of mental clarity are criminally under-emphasized on fitness magazine covers and your friend’s post-Color Run selfies.
Hey Rhody! elorza’s running group meets every sunday at 9am in front of the Museum of natural History and Planetarium in Roger Williams Park. Like the group on Facebook for updates on weekly runs.
HeyRhody.com
so on a drizzly sunday morning i joined the mayor’s running group. Was i feeling confident in myself? Hardly. But this wasn’t a five-mile race or a tough Mudder. this was three miles in the park with a group of 20 judgment-free strangers who were looking for and giving out motivation. “We have an 80 year old and a six month old who come and everything in between,” the mayor had told me. “Everyone goes at their own pace. they run, they jog, they walk, whatever works for them.” At just about 9am, we all set out together and the group quickly separated into several smaller units. i measured my own pace against the others and quickly found a zone i was comfortable with, confident in knowing that there was always someone to catch up to or, if i needed to slow down, someone else to run along with. it’s the kind of motivating that doesn’t need verbal encouragement. the sound of breathing and feet on pavement was all the cheerleading i needed. the drizzling stopped shortly before we had started, and the colors of the trees were at peak autumn levels of ruby and orange, something even a jaded lifelong new Englander couldn’t help but be taken by. But runners be warned: those idyllic park views hide sinister inclines. Being a little more in shape would have helped, but if you’re a new runner or just coming back to it like i was, pace yourself early on to be better prepared for a handful of hills.
keep on challenging yourself “it’s always about setting goals and pushing yourself beyond what you were capable of previously. i always challenge myself. i always try to go faster. that’s been a consistent theme in my life that goes far beyond running.”
Another way of looking at it is those hills make the finish line feel that much sweeter. Looping back to the museum – technically a third of a mile over an even three – felt more significant than i remembered three miles feeling. i was wiped, but so were the runners who finished before and after me. Everyone swapped times and words of encouragement. some were discussing the 100-day running challenges they were doing together. A woman in her late 50s handed out bottles of water to everyone. “that’s the neat thing about the group on sundays” the mayor had told me. “You know your friends are going to be out there; they motivate you, you motivate them and there’s a community that forms around it.” As we all parted ways, a couple of the other runners asked how i felt and if they’d see me the following week. “i think so,” i told them. A beautiful park, camaraderie and a warm, fuzzy sense of accomplishment? Who wouldn’t go back? Health & Wellness Guide 2016 |

401-228-6010 • healthwayri.com Losing weight is a goal shared by many, but losing weight, especially a lot of weight, can be incredibly difficult. Too many weight loss experts assume that overeating and sedentary lifestyles are the problem, but it’s not that simple. What if you already follow a healthy diet and exercise moderately, yet still can’t lose weight? That’s when it’s time to visit HealthWayRI. HealthWayRI is a nutrition management resource. Whether you’re struggling to lose weight, manage diabetes or integrate a specific diet (like gluten-free or ketogenic) into your life, they can help. Founded by cardiologist Irving Gilson MD, HealthWayRI has a team of Registered Dietitians ready to listen to your needs and provide the kind of support you won’t find anywhere else. Their newest program, the Equation, recognizes obesity as a disease; one that needs more than the simplistic admonition to ‘eat less and exercise more.’ As Dr. Gilson explains, “We intend to identify metabolic issues where they exist, and deal with them effectively. Along with diet, exercise and lifestyle change, when antiobesity medications are appropriate we’ll use them, as in the treatment of any disease.” Dr. Gilson, who started the first cardiac rehabilitation program in Rhode Island, and his staff of Registered Dietitians share a common goal: providing cutting-edge nutrition to those for whom failure is no longer an option.

Looking good has so much to do with how you interact with the world. How do you help clients find styles that make them feel great about themselves? By listening to what clients want and need. It makes me so proud when I get that client who says that every chair she sat in, the stylist never truly listened or suggested what should be done to her hair. I love the moment when she turns to me and says, “Thank you! No one has ever explained that to me.” That is what makes me proud to call myself a hairdresser: knowing I’m helping people feel good about themselves.

Improving Your Diet tips from the pros on how to shop, eat and digest food better By Ali McGowan
rhode island is chockfull of dietary professionals, from registered dietitians to board-certified health coaches, willing to dish out their best in nutrition information. there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to healthy eating, but everyone can benefit from these core principles. Vegetables are often the missing link in an average American’s diet, but their inclusion alone can pave the way for some serious health improvements, including lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, improved digestion and weight loss. “Fruits and veggies provide both soluble and insoluble fiber, which slow the rate of digestion so individuals feel satiated (i.e. fuller) for longer periods of time,” states Board Certified Health Coach Jeannette Bessinger (thecleanfoodcoach.com). in fact, vegetables should comprise about half of your plate, the more variety the better. Adults 19 years and older should consume at least 1.5 to 2 cups of dark leafy greens per week, which are full of vitamins A, C and K, folate, iron and calcium, in addition to 5.5 to 6 cups of bright orange and yellow fruits and vegetables that are rich in flavonoids, lycopene, potassium and beta-carotene.

Not only does buying local support our economy, shorter transit times maintain the food’s delicate nutritional profile, as well. “When food is transported over long distances, the produce lacks the same nutrition and flavor as if it were locally picked due to the process of respiration. When vegetables are harvested from their vines, respiration breaks down their stored organic materials so produce can breathe on their own,” says Corey Confreda of Confreda Greenhouses and Farms (confredafarms.com). Plus, grass-fed beef contains up to five times more heart healthy omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which helps raise good (HDL) cholesterol, while pastureraised poultry is guaranteed to be antibiotic- and hormone-free.

list on food labels,” states dietetic intern and university of rhode island graduate Kelly Presbrey. Why? Package claims are largely unregulated and often misleading, while Nutritional Facts panels are always regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “Jump down to the ingredient list where items are listed in order of their quantity, from greatest to least. if it’s a whole grain, whole grain will be the first ingredient,” states Kelly. When scoping out ingredients, be mindful of names you don’t recognize. “there are many words used to mask ingredients that are actually sugar or added fat,” notes Susanna. Be mindful of internal and external triggers, including memories, sights and smells and understand the difference between hunger (the physiological need to find and eat food) and appetite (the desire to eat regardless of bodily needs). they are only temporary. “the acute phase of most cravings lasts for ten minutes, and nearly all cravings will resolve on their own within an hour if you don’t act on them,” says Jeannette. And, if you do indulge, do so moderately. “one small indulgence – a few bites of cake rather than a whole slice – will never derail a diet, but it’s important to not let it be the start of a junk food streak,” offers Jennifer.

“For the highest quality, start at your local farmers’ markets or even join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) through Farm Fresh rhode island,” Jeannette suggests. Even better, “buy a whole animal to split with a family,” like rachael does. Not only is whole animal eating more sustainable, a snout-to-tail approach offers more variety from nutrient-dense organ meats and bone broth that are typically lacking in modern diets. And, when a trip to the grocery store ensues, understand that not everything needs to be organic. “use the ‘Clean 15’ and 'Dirty Dozen' list to make your choices,” advises Susanna, and stick to the store’s perimeters where the healthiest choices are located.
cook anD Plan anD Plan anD cook Cooking is, by consensus, the best way to improve one’s nutritional state. “Plan your weekly menu around sales,” says Jennifer, “and then batch cook larger proteins, a pot of grains or beans and a big base salad for the week,” Jeanette agrees. imagine batches of simple basics that take on bold flavors throughout the week. “roast chicken and beans on Sunday for miso chicken soup on Monday, curried chicken salad on tuesday and even bean burgers on Wednesday,” Jeanette recommends.
Studies show that mindful eating is associated with a more healthy body weight, and our registered Dietitian agrees. “rely on your internal cues to allow hunger to ensue naturally and, when it does, limit distractions that may cause you to unintentionally overeat,” says Jennifer. this means cell phones, televisions and even wandering thoughts.
Although cooking at home ensures a healthier plate, dining out doesn’t have to be a foodie free-for-all. “Ask for grilled instead of fried, and substitute potatoes and starches with a side of veggies,” offers Susanna. Save calories by requesting salad dressing on the side or, better yet, avoid common condiment additives, including soybean oil, high-fructose corn syrup and xanthan gum, by requesting oil and vinegar instead. And, when it comes to restaurant-sized portions, don’t feel pressured to wipe your plate clean. “Ask for a to-go box and immediately pack half for the next day,” offers Kelly.

Do what workS for you Eating is a dynamic and bio-individual concept and it’s almost impossible to craft the perfect diet for everyone. “Your eating needs change at different ages, different times of the year and even different times of the day,” Jeannette reminds us. the best thing anyone can do is to listen to their internal cues, which may need a bit of “reset” before they can be trusted. “Proper nutrition is a major form of health investing,” Susanna states, and the more energy one puts into creating a healthy lifestyle, the easier it will be to stick to his or her unique food needs.

Comfort Food with a twist How to hack favorite recipes to make them healthier By Jeanette St. Pierre
oh, comfort food. We seek you out when we’re happy, because we want to celebrate our good moments. And we want you when we’re sad, because we had a crummy day and we just deserve it, okay? it doesn’t take an armchair psychologist to realize how much our emotions are tied into what we eat. Admitting you have a problem is half the battle. the other half is just a hack away. a liGhtEr SlicE of Pizza

it’s hard not to overindulge with pizza. it’s one of our go-to comfort foods when we’re not in the mood to cook or clean up. And while restaurants keep finding creative ways to add more cheese and processed meat, you can get just as creative. Start by swapping traditional white flour crust for whole wheat crust; not only do you get to reap a ton of nutritious benefits, but you do so without sacrificing flavor. Whole wheat boasts higher amounts of fiber, which can help reduce cholesterol and even help you lose weight. Most markets carry whole wheat dough, or if you’re in a pinch grab a top this Fire Grilled Pizza Crust. the super thin crusts, which are available in whole wheat, are easy-to-use and delicious-to-eat. the rhode island-made crusts can be found at Dave’s Marketplace and other markets around the state. You can find whole wheat crust on menus around the state, like Pizza Pie-er (Providence) and Fellini’s Pizzeria (locations in Providence and Cranston). Whether you’re baking your own or ordering in, ditch the meat and add lots vegetables for a pie that’s stuffed with vitamins instead of empty calories.
Making burgers healthy is one of the easiest hacks in the kitchen. Start by making your own patties with lean ground beef, turkey or chopped up salmon. Beef patties are pretty easy to prepare, and less is more in terms of spices. if you’re using turkey or salmon, you’ll need to add a few ingredients to help bind the patties, like an egg or chopped spinach, and also to throw them in the freezer for 20 minutes to help the patties stay together. Broil or grill, then top with sliced avocado, onions, tomatoes or fresh veggies of your choice. You can further lighten the calorie load by going with an open-faced sandwich, or curbing the carbs altogether by wrapping your burger with lettuce.

keep it real. the number one way to eat healthy – and keep weight off – is by eating whole, unprocessed food. that means choosing raw almonds instead of smoked or flavored and drinking whole milk instead of reduced fat. Even packaged foods that seem healthy, such as granola bars and low-fat crackers, are full of artificial ingredients that our bodies simply cannot break down. Stick to real food for real healthy results. keep it simple. Cooking food from scratch can seem daunting and that’s why you should keep it simple. Find easy recipes online that only require a handful of ingredients and take just a few minutes to prepare. Plan your week. only take about 20 minutes to plan out your meals and create a shopping list. You can get fancy and use an app or your phone’s calendar to keep track of your meals, though a simple piece of paper affixed to your fridge will work, too. Prep twice a week. take 30 minutes every three to four days to food prep. You can chop vegetables, like celery and onions, to have on the ready for recipes or salad toppings. Put healthy snacks like baby carrots, grapes and cubes of cheese in ziptop bags for easy grabbing. Dust off your small appliances. Let your crockpot make dinner while you’re away at work. take a few minutes the night before to prep out the ingredients, dump them
in the machine in the morning, and come home to a slow cooked meal. use a countertop grill (like a George Forman) for a healthy and fast way to cook chicken, fish and burgers. rethink your plate. if you just can’t give up your go-to comfort foods like mac and cheese and pizza, then rethink your plate. rather than using the majority of your plate for that entrée, just use a quarter of the plate. Fill in the rest with a leafy salad or vegetables. Drink up. Drinking half of your weight in ounces of water is recommended for everything from improving digestion to balancing bodily fluid to better functioning kidneys. it also helps with keeping weight off, as we often confuse thirst with hunger.

Dining Out Well
A Side of Healthy Five tips to help you stay on track while dining out by Jeanette St. Pierre
Whether you eat at restaurants once a month or a few times a week, you shouldn’t leave all of your healthy sensibilities at the front door. Sure, dining out is a treat. But let’s face it: it’s just a meal (one of three for the day!) and not a reason to overindulge. So put those pants with the adjustable waistband away for good and follow these easy tips for healthy dining out success. 1. SkiP thE brEaD We’ve all been there. ravenous and restless, you dive into a warm basket of bread as soon as it lands on your table. What with a bowl of delicately whipped butter or a plate overflowing with garlicky olive oil included, how can you possibly resist? Easy, by keeping in mind that eating refined carbs on an empty stomach can cause blood sugar levels to spike, leaving you less satisfied and hungry shortly after you’re done eating your meal. healthy tips: Walking into a restaurant that hungry is never a good scene, so grab an apple or a handful of nuts before you even head out to help curb impulsive eating. if that fails, order a leafy salad or a vegetable-based appetizer as soon as you’re seated (but not deep fried – think sautéed Brussels sprouts instead of crispy jalapeño poppers).
2. SubStitutE. thEn SubStitutE SomE morE Most restaurants are more than willing to accommodate any special dietary requests you might have, so there’s no need to have anything on your plate that doesn’t suit your eating lifestyle. Sometimes it’s not your main entrée that’s the problem, but rather the heavy-handed sauces or sides that come with it. Heaping pile of fries that’s served aside of everything everywhere? We’re talking to you.
of the stuff you want to eat. As for those gluttonous side dishes (yeah, we’re still talking to you, fries), swap those empty calorie mounds for nutritious options, like a side of greens or seasonal vegetables.
3. Don’t Drink for your hEalth So you might know that soda, even calorie-free soda, is bad news. really bad news. But what might be a newsflash is that fruit juice is not that far behind. Some conventional fruit juices, like apple and cranberry, actually have more grams of sugar than soda. So while you’re thinking that you’re doing your body good by drinking your fruits for the day, you’re actually doing the opposite by sipping on fruit flavored sugar water. healthy tips: if you can live without it, stop drinking juice all together. Start by swapping juice with water when ordering your morning breakfast smoothie, and later on with club soda when grabbing a cocktail at the bar. if removing juice from your diet entirely is unrealistic, try to cut way back. one simple trick is diluting juice with water, and using lemons or limes if needed to naturally sweeten. You can also seek out freshly squeezed or organic varieties that will have significantly less sugar and calories.
4. GobblE uP a burGEr How much do we love our burger joints in rhode island? So much so that Travel + Leisure ranked Providence America’s Best Burger City in 2012. From patty melts served from quick service counters to grass-fed stacks handmade at gourmet restaurants, all types of burgers can be found on countless menus statewide. By the time you add cheese, bacon and an oversized buttery bun to the beef patty, that all-American classic has become an allout health hazard. healthy tips: one way to lighten it up is by opting for a lean turkey burger. Luxe Burger Bar and Harry’s Bar & Burger, both in Providence, are burger palaces that offer a variety of beef burgers, as well as equally delicious turkey alternatives. Another tip is to ditch the add-on toppings like fried eggs, onion strings and mayo. You can also lose the bun and bank around 350 calories. Add raw or sautéed vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce and avocado for a filling and nutritious classic of your own.
5. takE homE lEftovErS So you ordered the bacon mac and cheese with a side of fries and a tall glass of soda. Fine. No one’s judging you. unless you eat it all one sitting, that is. there’s no need to be the president of the Clean Plate Club every time you dine out. healthy tips: Portion control and moderation are both big parts of the eating healthy puzzle. And while some rhody restaurants pride themselves in serving larger than life portions (we’re looking at you Marchetti’s in Cranston), you should feel just as boastful taking what you didn’t eat home. that’s another meal (maybe even two!) you don’t have to cook.
Hey Rhody! Checking out a restaurant’s menu in advance is another great way to stay on a healthy track. From gluten-free to farm-to-table, check out over 80 local menus on HeyRhody.com.

Owner, Encore Executive Coaching How can executive coaching improve one’s health? By helping the client learn to recognize what barriers and obstacles are preventing them from taking control of their happiness and/or comfort level. In other words, coaching per se won’t cure diseases, but it will contribute to the client feeling less stressed, more in control and more able to determine the things that are most important. The client’s perspective can shift from negative to positive, which can lead to an improvement in their feelings of mindfulness, peace and being centered, as well as a greater ability to experience enjoyment. We all intend to change each New Year, but seem to fall short on our resolutions. Why is that? We all start off with the greatest intentions. However, the biggest obstacle is a lack of commitment. Without commitment and accountability, change is highly unlikely. If a person lacks awareness of the amount of time and energy involved in making commitments and keeping accountable, the person is not ready to be coached. Only when a person understands that it takes work to make changes and he or she is actually ready to change, can working with a coach be of value. It’s a good idea to sit down with a coach for a complimentary session to examine your readiness for change, immunity to change and resistance levels prior to spending money on coaching session. Coaching can help you make changes but without firm commitments and the ability to be accountable, making a shift in behavior will be very challenging, if not impossible.

You have an impressive background in corporate management. How did that prepare you for executive and professional coaching? I spent over 30 years in large, male dominated Blue Chip and Fortune 100 corporations. Large organizations can make people feel very insignificant and very much like nameless, faceless slots. Unless an employee figures out how to thrive in that environment, he or she will be very disappointed with their work life. I have learned many lessons working in these large bureaucratic organization that I pass down to my clients. What’s the best compliment a client has given you? The best compliment a client can ever give me is “thank you.” When I see smiles replacing frowns and hope replacing despair, I feel so grateful and appreciative that the person has been open enough to grow and change and let themselves be challenged as well as supported through the coaching process. Another compliment a client can pay me is repeat business or a referral. I offer an incentive to clients who provide me with a new client, be it a friend or co-worker. I truly enjoy my work, and look forward to many opportunities to working with people who may feel that their choices are limited and they’ve run out of ideas. That is when you know you are ready for a qualified, certified executive coach.

Demystifying Yoga
It’s All Yoga, Baby start where you are with a daily practice that’s right for you By Courtney Denelle
In every yoga studio, each passing day sees scores of new students, but the path to a daily yoga practice can be complicated by the ideas we have about yoga itself. Truth be told, there’s no one tradition that’s more “yoga” than the other. Modalities can be vigorous or more meditative or contemplative, but they are all yoga and vary as widely as the yogis rolling out their mats day in and out. Different classes are different paths up the same mountain. Here’s a closer look at popular yoga modalities to lend a hand in uncovering the practice that’s right for you. Hatha Yoga, the most widely practiced form of yoga in America today, concentrates on physical and mental well being, and is the foundation for most modalities marketed in the West. Hatha uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana) with the goal of cultivating a sound, healthy body and a clear, still mind. Breathing Time Yoga, 541 Pawtucket Avenue, Pawtucket. 401-722-9876, breathingtimeyoga.com Yin Yoga is a slow-paced modality with asanas held for longer periods of time – five minutes or more is the norm. Yin targets the connective tissues, like the ligaments, bones and joints of the body that normally don’t get a lot of love in more active styles of asana practice. suitable for all levels, Yin is an ideal complement to the dynamic and muscular Yan styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat and the contracting of muscles. It’s particularly good for athletes because the long poses deeply stretch and recharge muscle groups and fascia. All That Matters, locations in Providence, Wakefield and South Kingstown. 401-7822126, allthatmatters.com Ashtanga Yoga is a practice popularized in the West by teacher shri Patthabi Jois that incorporates vinyasa – a marriage of breath and movement - and utilizes asanas grouped into six series, each with an increased level of advancement in flexibility, grace and even humility. The sequential order is followed meticulously and each level is to be fully developed before moving to the next,

Ashtanga Yoga Rhode Island, 26 High Street, Westerly. 401-932-5650, ashtangayogari.com Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by BKs Iyengar, is a form of Hatha that emphasizes detail, precision and alignment in both asana and pranayama with a system of over 200 classical yoga poses and 14 different types of breathing exercises. With asanas ranging from basic to advanced, the practice ensures that progress is gradual and organic, developing mind, body and spirit step-by-step along the way. Iyengar makes frequent use of props like belts, blocks and blankets to assist in performing asana correctly, minimizing the risk of strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old. Iyengar Yoga Source, 1155 Westminster Street, Providence. 401400-3413, yogacenterprovidenceri.com Jivamukti is a physical, ethical and spiritual practice that combines a vigorous Hatha physical style and the vinyasa marriage of breath and rapid movement with adherence to five central tenets: shastra (scripture), bhakti (devotion), ahimsa (non-violence, non-harming), nada (music) and dhyana (meditation). As creative and expressive as it is physically challenging, animal rights, environmentalism and social activism are deliberately emphasized in this practice developed by teachers sharon Gannon and David life in the mid-’80s. Jala Yoga and Art, 285 South Main Street, Providence. 508-566-2524, jala-studio.com Amrit Yoga, described as “meditation in motion,” is a deeply meditative style founded by Yogi Amrit Desai that combines the physical practice of Hatha - asanas and meditation - with the mental and physical practices of Raja yoga - the path of self-discipline in the yogic tradition. With Amrit, asanas are practiced gently with two essential components - the active “Pose” and the restful “Repose” - and the proper use of breath anchoring both. 40 Day Revolution
A Mindfulness Revolution Revitalizing your life in All That Matters’ 40 day yoga and lifestyle program by Julie Tremaine
our sense of inner knowing and feeling more firmly rooted in who we truly are.” I was at the studio for a class, and I happened to look at my intention on the intention tree. “Trust yourself,” it said. I had meant to write “trust myself,” but I was so mentally disconnected, so distracted by details and to-do lists that I wasn’t even present inside my own mind. I had been talking to myself like my soul was a separate entity from my person. Trust yourself, I had written. I was shocked to read it, but even more to feel how far I had come in reconnecting to my innermost self. Before this program I don’t even know if I would have realized that mental distance – meaning to say “myself” and saying “yourself” – is a problem. But after observing how much more connected I feel to myself, to my life, to my relationship, I knew this is something I want to keep working on.
program, with enlightening results. Here’s her story. I thought that the 40 Day Revolution was going to be about yoga. The intensive program, offered by yoga studio/whole living haven All That Matters, gives students 20 days to break old patterns about fitness, nutrition and mindfulness, and 20 to make better ones. During the 40 Days, the website says, students will “Work with specific tools to change old habits into new healthy choices for lasting change, learn how to meditate with weekly lessons and group sessions, understand the best way to practice yoga for your body and gain new insights into your eating patterns.” But mostly, I thought, it was about trying to squeeze as much time on the yoga mat as possible. The program, based on Baron Baptiste’s book 40 Days to Personal Revolution, was taught by ATM owner Joan Dwyer at their newly opened Providence studio. (The Wakefield location of All That Matters just marked its 20th anniversary. There’s also a new east Greenwich location.) As part of the 40 days of “living with intention,” as Joan called it, there were weekly support meetings where we gathered to talk about our progress and learn new techniques. The theme for the first meeting, and the first week of the program, was Intelligence: being aware and present, not just in our lives, but in our “inner worlds,” and using the innate intelligence around us to guide our yoga practice. It sounds intimidating, but it wasn’t. We talked about little lifestyle changes that work towards a larger goal. As the meeting wound down, Joan passed out circles of paper to everyone. “Write your intention for this program on here,” she said. “Whatever you want to get out of this.” I looked down at my paper, and thinking about all of the changes I had been considering in my life, and all of the doubt that came with them, scribbled “trust myself.”

I’m a “say yes and figure it out later,” person. I have a hard time letting any opportunity pass. It leads to great experiences, but it’s a life of sensory overload. I’ve taken yoga classes over the last couple of years, and loved the quiet of the practice: no phones, no talking, nothing. You’re there to stretch out your body, clear your mind and replenish your spirit. But even though I love it, I struggle to maintain a real yoga schedule amid all of life’s distractions. What appealed to me about the 40 Days was that I would have a good reason to get there, and the external motivation would help me become more disciplined about my yoga practice and my overall physical fitness. What terrified me about the 40 Days is that I would struggle to work all of the classes into my overbooked schedule. During the first week, I tried to schedule yoga around my other obligations, penciling in 7am classes. I quickly figured out that when you’re stretched to your limit already, getting two hours less sleep isn’t really an option. During the first meeting, Joan told us that three weekly yoga classes was a good goal, but we could do as many as we wanted. I only made it to yoga twice that week, but since Joan made it clear that nobody would be checking my attendance, I didn’t feel like I was failing. I just felt like I needed a better balance – because when I was on the mat, I wanted to find more time to be on the mat. In the second week, the theme was Breath, and focusing on the vitality that it brings to your body and mind. I cleared my evenings, and filled them up with yoga classes. My friends were more than happy to swap out cocktails for yoga, with the added bonus that they called me “inspiring” over saturday morning brunch after our 10am Relax and Restore class. The theme for week three was Roots, “connecting to
In the final week of the program, I found myself looking back on what I thought it was going to be about, and comparing it to what I had experienced. Yes, I did yoga. A lot of yoga. But the journey I took on my mat wasn’t leading to a better downward-facing dog, or nicer calf muscles (though I did get both of those). It was leading to a better mental place, one where I care about taking care of myself as much as I care about taking care of the people I love, or as much as I care about meeting my deadlines, or checking off items on the never-ending to-do list. The time on my yoga mat created space for stillness and reflection in my life, and I carry that with me all the time, not just in the studio. The end of the program wasn’t really the end: it was the groundwork for a fresh perspective on my life. allthatmatters.com HeyRhody.com

One writer delves into a six week yoga, nutrition and mindfulness
During week four, Flexibility, our meeting (and our written materials) put this query to us: “we found our innate intelligence, our roots, and we know how to breathe into a situation. How do we take this purified self to the streets?” Once I started to think about that question, I realized I was already taking my new self into the streets. I noticed changes – how much quicker I could release stress and anxiety, how I was taking time to appreciate small moments of beauty all around me, how I felt more present in my own life. In the middle of week five, Union, I found myself on a short trip to new York, with the last minute problem of not having a place to stay. We were exhausted and cold, sitting on a bench on the High line, making phone call after phone call to Airbnb to get them to fix the situation. I hung up the phone and my boyfriend and I started walking again, when I spotted a little alcove. It turned out to be a sitting area over the street, with a sunset view all the way across lower Manhattan. “This is gorgeous,” I said to him. “This is what this whole program is about. When there’s all this stress and difficulty around you, there are still moments of beauty. This 40 days is teaching me to be mindful enough to see them.” We were still stranded in new York, but that moment was perfect.

| Health & Wellnes Guide 2016
There’s a familiar story that goes something like this: One day, we are born into this world, with fresh minds and open hearts and we begin on our journeys through the chapters waiting ahead. We absorb, we learn, we do cartwheels in the grass, we catch fireflies in jars, we swim in lakes until past our bedtimes after eating ice cream for dinner and then we do it all over again the next day. We laugh a lot. And talk about all the things we’ll be when we grow up. We go to school, make friends, get an education, play sports and have our hearts broken and repaired. And then we do it all again the next year. eventually, we get serious. We start studying more and earning accolades and making big decisions. We learn that when a challenge is presented, we push through it. We do well in school, go to college, pick a career to focus on in between sips from our solo Cups and by the time we get bumped out the door into the real world as we know it, we have a plan. A plan, by all intents and purposes, is a good thing. so as we follow along in that plan, some of us settle right into our roles of what it is we think we’re supposed to be doing. But somewhere along the way, something happens. We wake up one day, 15 years into our current successful and lucrative careers, married with three school-aged kids just beginning their own journeys, and we’ve realized one big problem. We’re unhappy. While this story may not apply to everyone, it is a reality for many. Frustrations and stresses associated with careers and personal achievement can zap the mojo out of life like a newborn steals your sleep. The joy you once had on a continual daily basis begins to build walls, only letting the moments peek through, and those moments are almost always outside of your workplace. But
change is scary. And confusing. This is when you need to call in help. What you need is a professional executive or career coach. not to be confused with a life coach or a therapist, an executive or career coach specializes in guiding clients in their fit to their organization, whether it’s to work together to enhance their effectiveness in the workplace, or execute a plan to move on to a new venture gracefully, whereas a life coach focuses on the individual as one step removed from the workplace and includes personal challenges and a therapist counsels emotional, mental and psychological damage and disorders. Benefits of working with an executive coach include achievement of a good
“A career coach may even make you love what you do again” work/life balance, stress reduction, increased confidence, enhanced decision-making skills, refined leadership methods, and improvement of health and wellbeing, to name a few. They may even make you love what you do again. local executive and highly credited Professional Coach of over 30 years, Mary O’sullivan, tells me that people reach out to her for coaching when they feel like they are out of control of their futures. “To determine whether you can benefit from coaching, start by thinking about what you want to accomplish. When you have a good idea of what your ideal out-
come looks like, a coaching partnership can help develop a strategy for how to achieve that goal, with fewer obstacles getting in your way,” Mary says. “Ask yourself if you are ready to devote the time and the energy into making real changes. If the answer is yes, then coaching is the right path for you.” she goes on to say that in order to have a happy, balanced life, people need to ask themselves serious questions, such as what is most important to them, what is the outcome, what can be controlled versus what can’t be, and are their choices realistic. These methods align with the values that another local expert career coach of over 25 years, Heidi Werther, shares. “While each reason that an individual seeks out a coach is unique, a lack of clarity or feeling stuck, honing strengths to achieve a ‘dream job,’ or a need to move forward in a transition with a desire to be held accountable in these changes are all triggers for wanting to work with a career coach.” Heidi’s professional background in both coaching and mediation provides an environment that not only guides and comforts, but also reinforces active listening and helps to resolve conflict — which aligns with her innate passion for helping others. Both coaches are clear in that their partnerships with their clients, whether businesses or individuals, have successfully led to renewed paths of change, goalsetting, and happiness. It seems simple enough, right? Fix the pieces that are broken and the walls will come down. like any catalyst to change, first recognizing that it needs to happen (and that you may need help with it) is essential. The very wise Brene Brown once said, “If we own the story, then we can write the ending.” I think our stories are worth the editing. And maybe a couple cartwheels.
