Your guide to all things spring in the Ocean State
BATTER UP! When spring rolls back around it brings a lot of our favorite things with it, chief among them being the Pawtucket Red Sox (PawSox.com). April 10 will see the first pitch of the year at McCoy Stadium when the PawSox take on the Syracuse Chiefs in the first of 70 home games this season. Though
Rhode Island may be more evenly split on the Red Sox/Yankees debate (we’re looking at you, Johnston Yankees fans) than our neighboring commonwealth to the north, there’s no denying who our state’s real team is. Boston can have Red Sox Nation. Down here, this is PawSox country. The PawSox take on the Syracuse Chiefs on April 10 for their 2017 season home opener
RHODY HAPPENINGS
The Sandlot, Revisited Adult kickball leagues let you relive your recess glory days The roar of the crowd. The taste of slightly warm beer in a solo cup. The “doink” of the ball. Nothing beats a ridiculous game of kickball on a beautiful spring day. Here in Rhode Island, two leagues embrace the immortal struggle for gym class supremacy: the Providence Kickball League (PKL, ProvidenceKickball.org) and RI Kickball (RIK, RIKickball.org) in Newport. As it was in grade school, so it is in adult life – when it comes to kickball, anyone can be a champion. In Providence, PKL meets every Saturday afternoon at Dexter Field in the city’s West End. With the beautiful, historic Cranston Street Armory behind it, the self-described “greatest show on dirt” runs from May through September. Meanwhile, RIK meets on Monday nights through May at Newport’s Morton Park. For every crushing kick and SportsCenter worthy double play, there’s a wacky costume or a team name like the Ball Busters, the Meat Sweats or McBallface. Basically it’s a place for grown ups to forget about their mortgages and deadlines, and for a few sweet hours a week feel like kids again. That, and they make more “balls” double entendres than kids at a middle school bus stop. So what makes kickball endure? Probably the silliness of it. “The league is something that embraces counter-culture and ridiculous behavior at the same time as good sportsmanship,” says PKL commissioner Sean Larkin. “We have a good healthy balance of shenanigans alongside athleticism.” –Tony Pacitti
Shop local and celebrate ten years of Record Store Day on April 22
You Spin Me Right Round Local stores celebrate Record Store Day This year, April 22 will mark the tenth anniversary of Record Store Day (RSD, RecordStoreDay.com), an annual event for record store owners, audiophiles and people who love music to come together and celebrate all things vinyl. Across the country there will be thousands of record deals, exclusive RSD vinyl releases and appearances from artists who want to give back to their fans and in Rhode Island there are 13 stores that identify as record shops and 10 of those stores are RSD Pledged. Those shops include – but certainly aren’t limited to – Music Box and Vinyl Guru Record Shop in Newport, Armageddon Shop, Olympic Records and What Cheer Records and Vintage in Providence, Looney Tunes in Wakefield and In Your Ear in Warren. RSD participants are stores that define themselves as brick-and-mortar and whose ownership is 70% in the state in which they’re located (hello shopping local!). Clear your schedule. Between digging through bins, catching appearances from local musicians and listening to that stack of new wax you’re going to bring home, it’s going to be a long, rockin’ day. –Caitlin Howle

Wicked Dutch On the field at Rhode Island’s only pick-your-own tulip farm out last year, Wicked Tulips Flower Farm (WickedTulips.com) in Johnston is bringing a little bit of Holland back to Rhode Island. After a successful first season, owners Jeroen and Keriann Koeman have been preparing close to one million bulbs, and with careful planning will have two “u-pick” fields. Using his Dutch skills, Jeroen should have their first tulips blooming

in early April, three weeks earlier than usual. Once the smaller field has been picked the larger field should be ready to open for early May. The Koemans hope having two fields will allow the farm to stay open for 5-6 weeks instead of the 18 days they were open last season. Wicked Tulips is the first and only u-pick tulip field in New England. As if last year’s 250,000 tulips weren’t
enough, this year will be four times bigger with a large variety of colors, shapes and sizes. We’re all know how unpredictable New England weather can be, so the exact dates of opening will not be announced until April. Tickets can be bought at the door on weekdays but because of limited access to the field, tickets for weekend visits should be bought in advance. –Kemill Logarta

Longest. Game. Ever. Pawtucket’s (very long) chapter in baseball history Imagine squatting for eight hours. That’s what Rochester Red Wings catcher Dave Huppert did on an April night at Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium more than 35 years ago, when he was behind the plate for 31 innings of the longest professional baseball game ever played. The contest took 33 innings over the course of two days and a total of 8 hours and 25 minutes of playing time to resolve. Ultimately, the Pawtucket Red Sox won 3-2, though by that point, hardly anyone cared. All but one inning of the game was played on the night of April 18, 1981 and into the early morning hours of April 19. Wade Boggs was one of a number of notable future major league players on the field that night, infamously driving in the tying run in the bottom of the 21st inning, inexplicably extending play when all anyone really wanted to do was go home. Players and the 19 fans remaining in the stands finally called it a night at 4:07am, when the umpires suspended play in the 32nd inning. The game resumed with a much larger crowd gathered a month and a half later on June 23. Pawtucket first baseman Dave Koza rather anticlimactically ended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 33rd, just 18 minutes after play had resumed. For Koza, it turned out to be the highlight of his career: he played 10 years in the Red Sox organization, but never got into a big league game. But for a AAA game played in front of a sparse crowd on a chilly April night, the Longest Game wound up having quite an impressive pedigree: in addition to Boggs, fellow Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. was at third base for Rochester, and future Red Sox second baseman Marty Barrett scored the winning run for Pawtucket. Other notable “survivors” of the game included pitchers Bruce Hurst and Bob Ojeda and catcher Rich Gedman, now a coach for the PawSox. –Bob Curley

A May Day Celebration Dancing at dawn with The Ladies of the Rolling Pin Every May, at dawn’s first light
Photo (top) courtesy of The Ladies of the Rolling Pin, (bottom) by Stacey Doyle
on the month’s first day, traditional Welsh dancing teams greet the new sun. It’s a symbolic tradition, one dating back hundreds of years to 15th century England, meant to wake the Earth from its long winter slumber. Tradition also dictates that, historically speaking, these dancers are men. But since 1998, The Ladies of the Rolling Pin (LadiesOfTheRollingPin.Wordpress.com) have greeted the first May sun on the shores of Narragansett. In lieu of the customary sticks, they wave domestic instruments, like sifters and the rolling pins they take their name from. “The ladies are Rhode Island’s only all-female Border Morris Team,” explains member Monica Van Horn. Border Morris is a specific style of the dance that originated along the border of Wales. “We enjoy a comedic take on the traditional forms,” she says. Hence the rolling pins, a tongue-in-cheek nod to women’s historical exclusion from the festivities. The sun will rise at 5:43am this May Day, and The Ladies of the Rolling Pin will be at The Towers on Narragansett Beach, eager to greet it for yet another year with song and dance. Monica says, “We enjoy dancing with [the] ocean as the backdrop of the sunrise since it is one of the elements that makes our community so beautiful.” A community potluck breakfast will be served afterwards. 5:43am is awful early, but don’t feel bad if you miss it. Morris dance teams greet May Day all over the world. An overachieving late sleeper could always try to outrun the sun to a different time zone. But if you prefer your May Day festivities shackled to the laws of physics, you may want to set an alarm. –Tony Pacitti
Set your alarm: The Ladies of the Rolling Pin will be dancing at dawn on May 1 at The Narragansett Towers
150 Years of Breakfast Rhode Island’s May Breakfast tradition is more than just johnnycakes and eggs
There’s never a wrong time to eat johnnycakes, but there’s never a better time than a May Breakfast
HeyRhody.com
If you’re not a born and raised Rhode Islander, you may not be familiar with our most beloved spring food tradition, the May Breakfast. What started as a simple fundraiser in Cranston has become a staple in the Ocean State’s quirky culture. The original 1867 breakfast was hosted by Mrs. Roby King Wilbur at Cranston’s Quaker Meeting House. The then-president of the Searle’s Corner Benevolent Society intended to raise funds for construction of a new building, a cause bringing in over 400 empty stomachs and an donation amount of $155.50 - an equivalent to a whopping $2,000 today. The building constructed from the original event is today’s Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church (OLCBaptistChurch.com), where May Breakfast continues and will celebrate 150 years on the annual May 1 observance. The fundraisers continue statewide on various days in May. Newman Congregational Church (NewmanUCC.org) of East Providence will be celebrating on April 29 with their 82nd Annual May Breakfast. In South County, First Baptist Church (FirstBaptistRI.org) of East Greenwich and Rotary Club of North Kingstown (Portal. ClubRunner.ca/4799) will be hosting events on May 6. There are more all over the state all month. Treat yourself to a little piece of Rhode Island while also giving back to the local community. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? –Jake Turpin Spring Guide 2017 |

The Showroom Advantage Warwick Neck Featured Home Lighting Remodel The showroom is a great resource – and when it comes to making important decisions about lighting, seeing is believing.
G
oing online is great for gathering product information and design ideas, but there’s no substitute for seeing things in person. Not only do colors and finishes appear differently on a computer screen than they do in person, the online experience cannot replicate how a light fixture will feel and function in your space.
PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will guide you through every step of the selection process. Lighting can be tricky when you consider space restrictions and all that has to go into a room to make it beautiful and functional. Helping you choose products that suit your taste and address your needs – while being mindful of the things you can’t see behind the walls and beneath the floors- will result in a design that will provide years of pleasure and comfort while adding value to your home.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Browse our website for pictures of products, designs, layouts and décor that will inspire you. Visit our online showroom and start a Wish List of items you’d like to incorporate into your project. Then make an appointment with one of our showroom consultants. They’ll bring your online vision to life and give you the assurance that what you saw on your computer screen will fit, function and look beautifully in your home. That’s the Showroom Advantage!

works to educate the public about the state’s native plants and habitats. They frequently host events, including nature walks with local experts. On April 29, they’re hosting An Introduction to Wildflower Identification Using Newcomb’s Field Guide at URI’s East Farm, which is an hour of instruction on identifying wildflowers, followed by an outdoor walk to find them in the wild. May 4 brings a Botanizing Walk at Lime Rock Preserve in Lincoln, which has trails through woodlands, forested swamps, streams and open water. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI.org)
has wildlife refuges all over the state, with guided family-friendly nature walks, including a ton of resources and events geared towards birdwatching. Their Environmental Education Center in Bristol is a natural history museum that is also home to Rhode Island’s largest aquarium, offering tidal pools to explore and rare orange and blue lobsters, and is open daily. Its boardwalk trails over fresh and saltwater marshes are an easy stop off of the East Bay Bike Path. Save the Bay (SaveBay.org) keeps our waters clean, but also provides lots of different opportunities for people to experience Narragansett Bay. They offer seal watch cruises, nature cruises and birding boat tours, as well as trips to Prudence Island in Mount Hope Bay. Their Exploration Center and Aquarium on First Beach in Newport, open weekends through Memorial Day and daily after, has touch tanks for little ones to get to know the marine life in Narragansett Bay.

Hit the Road Grab your wheels and head out for a ride on a bike path
There’s nothing better than a bike ride on a warm spring day. Here’s a guide to the Ocean State’s many bike paths. BLACKSTONE RIVER BIKEWAY
Photography by Tiffany Medrano
The mighty Blackstone River helped power the birth of the American Industrial Revolution, and remnants of this great economic upheaval are all around you as you travel the 12 miles of the Blackstone River Bikeway. Once a wasteland, the river gets cleaner with each passing year, with nowsilent mills converted to condos, and canoes and kayaks plying the waters where canal boats once brought goods to market. A cruise down the Blackstone Bikeway from Woonsocket to Cumberland will be rewarded with: • Passing through the four mill villages built by the Lonsdale Company in the 19th century: Lonsdale Old Village (1834), Lonsdale New Village (1860), Ashton (1867) and Berkeley (1871). • Staring up at the towering span of the Ashton Viaduct Bridge as you ride on the path below. • The occasional thrill of a Providence and Worcester Railroad freight train passing on this still-important transportation corridor. • A stop at the Captain Wilbur Kelly House in Lincoln, a former mill owner’s home that now serves as a visitor center and transportation museum. • Glimpses of the 1828-48 Blackstone Canal
paralleling the river. • Crossing the Pratt Dam over the Blackstone River. • A pedal through a peaceful meadow that was once the Lonsdale Drive-In Theater. • A boardwalk over a section of the Lonsdale Marsh, the largest in Rhode Island. • The Valley Falls Heritage Park, built on the ruins of the Valley Falls Company mill. Want to keep riding? Follow the street signs to connect to the East Bay Bike Path via Blackstone Boulevard.
EAST BAY BIKE PATH Rhode Island’s oldest bike path runs 14.5 miles from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol, hewing close to the banks of the Providence River and the east coast of Narragansett Bay most of the way. Riding north to south, other highlights include: • A steep plunge down historic Fort Hill, the site of military battlements during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. • A breezy ride across a narrow causeway following the right-of-way of the former
Providence and Bristol Railroad, ending at the entrance to the beautiful and historic Squantum Association with its white Colonial Revival mansion overlooking the river. • Riverside, once the home of the beloved Crescent Point amusement park and still a great stop for ice cream at the path-side DariBee. (The Crescent Park Carousel is a short detour down Bullock’s Point Avenue.) • Haines Memorial Park, where riders can take a brief beach break before continuing on into Barrington. • Barrington’s Brickyard Pond, a flooded former clay pit that’s now a popular fishing spot. • The bridges connecting Barrington and Warren, near Massasoit’s Sowams camp where Rhode Island founder Roger Williams sought sanctuary with the Wampanoag tribe while fleeing from Massachusetts in 1636. • Historic downtown Warren, where the path slips behind historic Main Street with its shops and restaurants. • Bristol, where bikers cross over the marsh boardwalk at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center before entering Colt State Park, a popular detour with biking paths of its own. The end of the East Bay Bike Path is in Bristol’s Independence Park, where you can reward yourself with clam cakes at Quito’s or grab a cold one
Beaches, historic railways and mansions, and beautiful parks line the East Bay Bike Path

RHODY BIKE 5 MORE PATHS TO EXPLORE
hop off your bike for some of RI’s tastiest treats
at Aidan’s. More adventurous riders can catch the ferry to Prudence Island, a mostly undeveloped sliver of old New England in Narragansett Bay.
WASHINGTON SECONDARY BIKE PATH Running 19 miles from Cranston Street in Cranston to Log Bridge Road in western Coventry, the Washington Secondary Bike Path offers riders a gradual transition from urban to suburban to rural Rhode Island. Beginning in Cranston near the site of the original Narragansett Brewery, the path passes historic mills and other industrial sites before rising gradually into the cool woodlands of Coventry, including the latest, 4.8-mile Trestle Trail segment added to the path in late 2014. Ride from northeast to southwest and you’ll experience: • Tongue Pond, with a 1/2-mile loop trail around an often-overlooked pond right near the start of the bike path. • Kids flocking to Sundae’s on Oaklawn Avenue for ice cream. • Crossing the old truss-style railroad bridge over the Pawtuxet River. • Taking in the sights and smells at the Bradford Soap Works from the bridge that passes above the factory and its old millrace and waterfall. • Taking a side jaunt to the riverside home of Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nathaniel Greene in Anthony Village (just past the Soap Works). • Views of the Pawtuxet River, which in some western sections more resembles a fjord than the narrow waterway you see running through Warwick. • Riding along the beautiful Flat River Reservoir in Coventry. • Spotting the old railroad switches, tracks and platforms alongside the trail. Reach the end of the line near the historic Summit General Store and and you’ll be looking forward to the next extension of the path (it will eventually

run 24 miles and reach the Connecticut border). Meanwhile, if you are on foot or have a mountain bike you can continue to follow the unpaved Trestle Trail westward.
SOUTH COUNTY BIKE PATH It feels pretty far from the sea when you’re at Kingston Station (near the University of Rhode Island) and looking at the trailhead of the South County Bike Path, but it’s actually less than 8 miles to Narragansett Bay, following the course of the old Narragansett Pier Railroad. After skirting some farmers’ fields, the bike path edges alongside the Great Swamp Management Area before cutting through the woods and mill villages of South Kingstown and ending near the beach. An outing on the South County Bike Path features: • A pair of small bridges looking out over swamplands populated by waterfowl, turtles and freshwater fish. • Long stretches through quiet woodlands. • Dismounting to explore the trails to South Kingstown’s Tri-Pond Park. • Taking the challenging switchback where the path crosses Kingstown Road, site of a former railroad bridge (Kingston Pizza, with its streamside picnic tables, is a popular lunch spot). • Spotting the chickens and goats wandering through quiet Riverside Cemetery. • Pausing to admire the Saugatucket River running behind Main Street in Wakefield. • Stopping for lunch at Rhody Joe’s before plunging into the tunnel under Route 1 and down the steep hill into the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge. The path ends rather unceremoniously at South Kingstown High School, but press on for a few Narragansett streets and you’ll be at the beach and pier in minutes.
Quonset Bike Path Starting on Post Road and passing the Seabees Museum and other remnants of the former Quonset Point military base, the Quonset Bike Path is a 2.5-mile, out-andback route leading to the shore of Narragansett Bay at Calf Pasture Point. A sandy beach waits at the end, and there are new fitness stations along the way if you’re looking to cross-train. Ten Mile River Greenway This often overlooked, three-mile bike path is actually one of the most beautiful in the state. Beginning at the Kimberly Ann Rock Athletic Fields in East Providence, it runs alongside the James V. Turner Reservoir (a dammed section of the Ten Mile River) as it heads north through Slater Park and into Ten Mile River State Park. Warren Bike Path This one-mile bike path is built on an old segment of the abandoned Warren-Fall River Railroad spur and ends at the pretty Meadows Park – the path will be much more userfriendly if the town follows through on plans to connect it to the nearby East Bay Bike Path; meanwhile, you can use city streets to bike from one path to the other. Warwick City Park Bike Path City Park, located in the Buttonwoods section of Warwick, has a very pretty (if somewhat bumpy) three-mile bike path that loops along the contours of Buttonwoods Bay and offers nice water views and a stop at a beach with picnic areas and shelters.

Explore bike paths around the state all morning…then
Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway This 5.7-mile urban bikeway has both onand off-road segments, starting officially at Waterplace Park in Providence and following the Woonasquatucket River to the shores of Lyman Mill Pond in Johnston. Still a work in progress (and with the goal of taking more of the path off the busy local roads), the path cuts behind Rising Sun Mills, through Merino Park, Riverside Park and Donigan Park, and includes a loop around Buttonwoods Golf Course.

Earth Day Every Day Small changes can make Little Rhody’s environment a little better
Earth Day is April 22, but that doesn’t mean that caring for the planet should just happen on one day. Volunteer at a community cleanup, learn more about the planet or simply make a small change to do your part.
T
he Party for the Planet at Roger Williams Park Zoo (RWPZoo.org) is, they promise, “as big and green as the Earth itself.” All through April vacation – from April 17-21 – there are free events included with zoo admission every day. Families will explore the world through the lens of the different regions featured at the zoo: Africa, Tropical America, Australasia and North America. There will be Keeper Talks with people who care for the animals, opportunities to meet the zoo’s animal ambassadors and activities and demonstrations. On April 22, environmentally minded families will gather at the State House for a March for Science, hosted by Rhode Island Families in Nature (RIFamiliesInNature.org). The Earth Day event is happening all over the world to show support for
science: the Rhode Island event will start with a rally at the State House, and then continue on to a one-mile march. Earth Day at the Rhode Island State House, hosted by the Environmental Council of RI (Environment CouncilRI.org) happens this year on April 30. It’s a day of learning about the organizations in the state that help make RI a cleaner place, with a discussion with local politicians about what is happening at the state level to help the environment. The Pride in Pawtucket Earth Day Cleanup (WhatGrowsOnRI.com) on May 6 gathers people to clean up public spaces all around the city, with refreshments, and educational art and materials. The Partnership for Providence Parks (ProvidenceParks.org) is joining forces with Providence
Mayor Jorge Elorza for a massive, citywide Earth Day initiative. On April 22, there will be over 40 cleanups throughout the city, with over 2,000 volunteers all working to make Providence a more beautiful place. Ocean Notion (Ocean-Notion. org) is an organization that works to keep Rhode Island’s waters clean. Founded by URI students, Ocean Notion helps businesses become more eco-friendly, hosts regular cleanup events and has removed over 2,500 pounds of trash from the ocean.
Hey Rhody! Eco-Depot (EcoDepotRI.org) hosts a once-monthly event at Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, where people can safely dispose of hazardous household materials like paint, rechargeable batteries and automotive fluids. This spring’s dates are April 8 and May 13.

Interior design advice, gardening tips and decluttering hacks to take your home way beyond simple spring cleaning
AN INSTAGRAM-WORTHY KITCHEN Holly Vine likes to cook - so much so that when she and husband Charlie moved from the United Kingdom to the East Side of Providence, she started the lifestyle blog Holly Likes to Cook (HollyLikesToCook.com). “I test a lot of recipes,” she says, so she and Charlie renovated the kitchen to be an ideal cooking space. “We wanted to keep a non-scary budget - it’s amazing how quickly these things add up! - so we chose basic cabinets and tile, and a simple butcher’s block. We gave it our own look with the accessories and accent pieces, like my collection of glass
storage jars from flea markets, which are practical but become a decorative element on their own, and the bits and bobs I get back in England to bring a touch of Britain into my space. Of course, you can’t have an English cake stand without a proper Victoria sponge.” Her trick for brightening up the space at the change of seasons? Fresh flowers. “It always makes the house feel clean and fresh,” Holly says. “I never have proper vases, so they always end up in one of my jugs. This beauty is from Stock Culinary Goods on Hope Street in Providence.”
Lifestyle blogger Holly Vine has incorporated practicality and decorating touches from her native England to create an ideal space for experimenting with recipes in her Providence home

Fresh Looks Welcome a new season with spring trends from interior designers Nobody has time for entirely new home decor every season - but everyone has time for a tweak or two. Rhode Island interior designers weigh in on small changes that make a big impact. The paint colors for 2017 work beautifully with a nautical theme in any season. Sherwin Williams’ Poised Taupe and Benjamin Moore’s Shadow show the sharp contrast of what can be used in today’s home, whether you want drama, serenity or a little of both when paired together. For spring, add fresh flowers to get rid of the winter blahs, and tweak your lighting. Add more lamps for a brighter space. And when it comes to redecorating, shop your home first: move the furniture and accessories by repurposing some pieces from another room. -Deborah DeChristofaro, DeCristo Designs East Providence and Narragansett. DeCristoDesign.com
Start with one thing that inspires you. There is an old saying everyone will recognize and it fits perfectly in design: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” Make this your starting point. Use that old rocking chair passed
Sherry Pierce of Watch Hill Designs suggests finding one piece that inspires you and using it to create a cohesive design
down from grandma. Set it in the corner, add a new embroidered pillow in the color you love and you now have a start to your design: a diagonally placed piece with mid-level color. Now follow the previous tip and add eye- and floor-level accents around the

room. -Sherry Pierce, Watch Hill Designs, Watch Hill. WatchHillDesigns.com Add some new art to your walls. Check out your local galleries, art fairs or Etsy. Art should be a reflection of you and will personalize your space - so take down that poster you’ve had since college and buy something that speaks to you. Most artists sell prints of their originals at a much more affordable price. Stores like IKEA and Michael’s have discounts on decent frames to complete the look. Be sure your art is size appropriate for the wall and hang at eye level. Mix it up with decorative mirrors, which reflect light and make the room look larger, photography, and something sculptural to add variety and texture. Try clustering more than one piece on a wall. Avoid putting the same size rectangle on all four walls – diversity is key to keep the room interesting. -Jessica Becker, Jessica Becker Designs, Providence and Westerly. JessicaBeckerDesigns.com Texture is huge right now. Velvet is making a comeback, and is even available in outdoor fabrics. Add some texture by using rugs such as shags and heavy piles, and also nubby weaves. The use of brick on walls is coming back, as is the use of textured wall covering like grass cloth and flocking. Fabrics and wall coverings in large scale are now back, also. Think chairs, drapes and walls covered in large florals or geometrics. -Kim Elliott Peterson, KEP Interior Designs, West Greenwich. KEPInteriorDesigns.com HeyRhody.com

Add varying textures: Different materials and textures give a room depth. They’re the pieces that make the space feel like home and not a furniture showroom floor. Play around with velvets, chunky knits and other materials in your throws, pillows and your accessories. You might even consider using texture on walls. -Lee Chartier, Inside Style, Wakefield. The group has annual events like garden tours, and hosts plant sales every season at East Farm, their outpost in Kingston. It takes 14 weeks of training and hundreds of hours in the garden to become a Master Gardener, studying everything from plant nutrition to gardening for wildlife and organic methods. Once you’re in, there’s a requisite amount of volunteer work: gardeners help maintain green spaces around the state, and regularly speak in schools and at garden clubs. One of the Master Gardeners, Barbara Gee (BarbaraGee. com), has even written a book: The Rhode Island Gardener’s Companion. Bring home a piece of spring from the URI Master Gardeners Plant Sale
The Farmer’s Daughter (TheFarmersDaughterRI. com) in South Kingstown is a nursery and garden store that has greenhouses and artful plant displays as far as the eye can see, and offers extensive classes at varying levels of expertise. In April alone, there are classes in Easter Tablescape Design (April 13), Miniature Landscapes and Fairy Gardens (April 19) and Succulent Wreath Design (April 29).
Hey Rhody! Think gardening is something you only do in your own yard? Think again. The Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs (RIGardenClubs.org) is an umbrella organization for all of the Ocean State’s garden clubs – and there are a lot. Their focus is on education, civic design and promoting the love of gardening. There’s no better way to hone your skills than to learn from the experts in your community – so get involved, and get growing.

Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum (Blithewold.org) in Bristol has some of the state’s most beautiful gardens, and they teach regular workshops on gardening, floral design and landscape design. They’re hosting a Gardener’s Round Table about growing begonias on April 28 and April 30, and a workshop on Creative Window Box Solutions on April 29. Growing is one thing – growing safely and sustainably is entirely another. The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Rhode Island (NOFARI. org) is a collaboration between farmers, consumers, gardeners and environmentalists to promote best organic growing practices. The group offers regular educational workshops, called CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training), which are free to the public. On May 17, there’s an on-farm workshop in Slocum on soil fertility, cover cropping and plant diversity. Horticulturalist Jayne Merner Senecal believes the best way to learn something is to do it – so she’s teaching monthly hands-on gardening workshops at Earth Care Farm (EarthCareFarm.com) in Charlestown. April 22 will focus on sowing
carrots, beets and potatoes and preventative insect methods. May 20 will focus on planting leafy vegetables. Any visit to Earth Care Farm, a compost farm that just debuted its new blend Rhody Gold, is an educational experience: the farm is turning 40 this year and Jayne is making a documentary about her family’s green story. Essential oils have so many uses, from being natural cleaning products to acting as natural medicinal alternatives. Aromatherapy opens up a whole new world of feeling better, without involving a prescription pad. At Newport Aromatherapy (NewportAromatherapy.com), herbalist Cynthia Marie LaBonte blends essential oils into delicious smelling perfumes that actually boost your wellness. Panacea is a lavender, ylang ylang and rose blend that calms you down, improves hypertension and promotes fuller breathing and a sense of well-being. Balance has Egyptian geranium, French lavender and bergamot, which lift your mood, calm your hormones and soothe your skin.

as well as the symptoms. Herbalism is increasingly gaining traction in the medical community as an aid to traditional pharmaceutical treatments: think ginger supplements, which decrease inflammation, in addition to an arthritis prescription. With thousands of plants commonly used as medicine, the possibilities are endless.
Food as medicine – the idea that an improved diet can improve your physical health – is becoming more and more mainstream. But herbs can be medicine, too. At Shen Garden Acupuncture (ShenGardenAcupuncture.com) in North Kingstown, Dr. Dan Howard is an acupuncturist who also practices Chinese herbal medicine, using herbs to create supplemental treatments that can address all kinds of maladies, from recurring headaches to insomnia to bigger health issues.

SEA THE RELAXATION Farmaesthetics (Farmaesthetics.com) is a Portsmouth-made line of allnatural beauty products that uses the natural properties of plants to maintain naturally beautiful skin. The Retreat at Castle Hill (CastleHillInn. com) is a Farmaesthetics spa within the seaside Newport hotel that offers facials and massages using products like Fine Herbal Cleanser, Vassar Rose Perfecting Polish and Nourishing Lavender Milk, all made with simple plant essences.
LOCAVORE SPA SERVICES At Citron Spa (SpaCitron.com) in Providence, locavore goes beyond just eating local: they want you to pamper local, too. Every season, owner Christina Allen creates a new service featuring fresh, local HeyRhody.com
ingredients. This spring, indulge in a Peach Mango and Sage manicure and pedicure, which use natural Aveda products, and add in the locally sourced scrub, made fresh every day. The added bonus of fresh flowers in your foot bath will make you feel like you’re on a tropical vacation, if only for an hour... but what an hour.
FLOWER POWER At Spa Yadira (SpaYadira.com) in Bristol, aesthetician and owner Yadira Alexander puts natural beauty first: that’s why her organic microdermabrasion machine uses actual rose or lavender grains. The service – especially combined with the Lumafirm Lift and Glow Facial using Pevonia, a botanical European line – creates a dewy, mid-summer glow in any season. The microdermabrasion
helps products penetrate further into the skin, brightens by stimulating collagen and helps minimize dark spots and fine lines.
SEEDS OF HEALTH Raffa Yoga (RaffaYoga.com) is a wellness center in Cranston that has yoga classes, a juice bar and Urban Sweat, which is a series of wet and dry saunas designed to purify and rejuvenate the body. They also have a spa, which offers facials, massages and body treatments – one of which is the Platza Treatment, which is a Russian heated leaf massage. The practice applies a venik – a bundle of birch, oak eucalyptus, juniper and other tree branches, soaked in warm water – to your entire body, purifying the skin, improving breathing and soothing muscle and joint pain.

Get Beach Ready Workouts that will have you looking and feeling great, just in time for swimsuit season By Jen Senecal
Spring means one thing: that it’s almost time to dust off those bathing suits and beach chairs. With only a couple of months to prepare for more sun and fewer layers, now is a good time to kick that fitness plan into high gear. REP IT OUT
TRAINING FOR LIFE
The first rule of Crossfit is that you tell everyone you do Crossfit. Step into this focused group session atmosphere and develop power and athleticism in a program of multiple training modalities – from Olympic lifting and conditioning to functional movements and powerlifting – all of which are scalable to your fitness level. Check out Post Road Crossfit (PostRoadCrossfit.com) in North Kingstown to get started with basic fundamentals and skills. And then post it on Facebook.
If you can squat 687 pounds but can’t sprint into the bathroom to hide your chocolate bar from your kids, what’s the point? Get your functional fitness maxed out at Manic Training (ManicTraining.com) in Wakefield and East Greenwich, where they’ve coined their philosophy to get you “Ready for Life.” Training sessions use full body workouts and compound movements that utilize free weights, medicine balls, sandbags, kettlebells, Airdyne bikes, Ski Ergs, rowers, sleds and more to keep you chasing candy bars without passing out.
HAPPY HOUR Bellying up to the bar(re) has never been more fun – except this social engagement won’t leave you with a hangover. Pure Barre (PureBarre.com), with locations in Cranston and East Greenwich, is an isometric workout that includes elements of ballet, weight training and pilates, and is a fast and effective way to tone your entire body. No tips required, but be sure to bring your Friday night flair.
LET THE BEAT HIT ‘EM There’s Zumba and then there’s Zumba on steroids (which, ironically enough, isn’t Zumba at all). Strong by Zumba at High Steppin’ Dance Academy (HighSteppinDance.com) in Johnston is a musically synced high-intensity interval training workout, where every beat of every song has a choreographed move – one that is not so much a bootie shake and very much a bootie burn.
426 Fitness in Warren whips you into beach season form with its intense 60-minute workouts
From burpees and lunges to jump squats and punches, this nonstop all-over body workout will leave its mark in the form of sweat and a kick-ass calorie burn.
There’s no better class for getting your body beach-ready than one called – you guessed it – Beach Body. At 426 Fitness (426Fitness.com) in Warren, the 60-minute workout combines strength training with intense cardio intervals while focusing on multiple muscle groups at once. There is no “cool down” (members do it on their own afterwards), so it’s a full hour of work, which equals lots of hours on the beach in your new suit.
STRAP UP
Manic Training in Wakefield offers intense, full-body workouts

For a setup that seems so simple, TRX Suspension Training is anything but – kind of like programming your TV remote. Instead of breezing right through it, you’ll sweat, struggle and maybe even swear. TRX, which uses a suspension strap system to utilize your own body weight as resistance, is a force on its own, but at Core Studios (CoreFitProv.com) in Pawtucket, they push the boundaries with their TRX Hybrid class, combining TRX with other dynamic full-body exercise equipment such as kettlebells, heavy ropes, dumbbells, sandbags and more. SHREDDING IT
The tacos at Providence’s Tortilla Flats (Tortilla FlatsRI.com) are packed to the brim with flavorful, juicy ground beef, lettuce and cheese. With a choice of soft or crunchy hard-shelled tacos, spicy sauces, sour cream, beans, tomatoes and other delicious ingredients, there are lots of tasty options.
Oceanside at the Pier (OceansideAtThePier.com) in Narragansett is known for its seafood, and these tacos don’t disappoint. The grilled tortilla shells house beer-battered morsels of cod, served on a bed of house-made salsa and avocado, and finished with a generous dollop of sour cream.
Nacho Mamma’s (NachoMammasBristolRI.com) in Bristol serves a shredded chicken taco filled with pickled red onions, diced tomatoes, sweet chopped mango, roasted red peppers and piquant cilantro. It’s a delicious example of their unique West Coast/ Miami fusion food.

DINNER’S A BEACH
These Grilled Fish Tacos from Bridge (BridgeRI.com) in Westerly hold pieces of succulent grilled swordfish topped with cabbage, pico de gallo and guacamole in a flour tortilla. The chipotle aioli brings everything together with just the right amount of spice.
Paco’s Tacos (PacosTacosRI.com) started as a food truck, but now has two trucks and a restaurant in Cranston. The crunch of their crispy taco holds up, even against beef, lettuce, cheese, pico de gallo and cotija cheese. Make sure to try the heavenly fried poblano rings on the side.
These whopping Baja Fish Tacos from BLU on the Water (BLUontheWater.com) in East Greenwich are nestled in white corn tortillas and stuffed with mahi-mahi. The mango salsa beautifully complements the Sriracha chili sauce and cheddar jack blend.

ELEGANT EATS For a completely indulgent experience, the Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Ocean House (OceanHouseRI.com) in Westerly is a must. There’s an extensive raw bar, charcuterie sliced to order, an omelette bar, scrumptious breakfast and lunch options and a whole table of desserts – all to be enjoyed with live jazz, blues and soul music. When fine dining and brunch combine, the result is the upscale menu at Simone’s (SimonesRI.com) in Warren. There’s a roaring woodfired oven where all manner of deliciousness is prepared, like the wood-grilled cuts of meat for Eggs Benedicts. Even grapefruit gets the grilled treatment, which is then topped with Rhode Island honey. Chef Joe Simone even makes his own jams, which are so popular he sells them by the jar. Nick’s on Broadway (NicksOnBroadway.com) in Providence has been sourcing from local farms since before it was cool, and it’s reflected in their weekend morning menu. They’ve got fresh eggs from Baffoni’s Poultry Farm in Johnston, fish from Point Judith, dairy from Narragansett Creamery and so much more.
BOOZY BRUNCHING Dante’s Kitchen (DantesKitchenRI.com) in East Greenwich pulls much of its culinary inspiration from below the Mason-Dixon Line. They’ve got HeyRhody.com
Biscuits and Gravy, Chicken and Waffles and Pulled Pork Hash, which can all be washed down with a Baton Rouge Lemonade with Bulleit Bourbon or the Dante’s Inferno Bloody Mary, with a cocktail shrimp, bacon swizzle stick and spicy rim. If brunch for you is more about the drinks than the food, the $15 bottomless Mimosas at The Village (TheVillageRI.com) in Providence’s Jewelry District will satisfy. However, if you do need a snack to accompany the bubbles, some Lavender Dusted Lemon Vanilla Pancakes might do the trick. One Mimosa or Bloody Mary just isn’t going to cut it. Opt for a pitcher instead. That’s exactly what you can get at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket and Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick (TappedRestaurantGroup.com). Don’t forget about the Irish pub fare, like Corned Beef and Hash, to accompany it.
FAMILY FUN For a side of history with your meal, head to the Modern Diner (ModernDinerRI.com) in Pawtucket. You’ll sit inside a historic railcar and dine on favorites like the Custard French Toast that the Food Network dubbed the number one diner dish in America. If you thought that you couldn’t just roll out of bed and head to breakfast, think again.
Dante’s Kitchen in East Greenwich serves up authentic Southern eats, like Chicken and Waffles
Providence’s XO Cafe’s Pajama Brunch (XOCafe. com) encourages diners to sport their comfiest PJs, and in return they are rewarded with a free Mimosa or Bloody Mary. 1149’s (ElevenFortyNine.com) brunch buffet in Warwick is something that everyone needs to experience at least once. In addition to carving and omelette stations, a dessert display, made-toorder bennies, soup, salad and smoked salmon, there’s a live jazz guitarist to keep your toes tapping all morning long. On the search for a healthier brunch? T’s Restaurant (TsRestaurantRI.com) has all the egg white and gluten-free options you could ask for. With everything from omelettes and oatmeal to sandwiches, keeping in tip-top shape is as easy as pie… or a healthy alternative to pie.
BY THE OCEAN For a brunch that’s more seafood-focused, head to George’s of Galilee (GeorgesOfGalilee.com). Think Fried Oysters and Chorizo Hash, Lobster Omelettes and a raw bar. Oh, and don’t forget to look up every so often for glimpses of the Block Island Ferry as it makes its way through the channel. If starting your Sunday morning with views of the ocean is on your list, the Ocean Mist (OceanMist.net) in Matunuck is where it’s at. Plus, from 9am-2pm, when you order from the Dawn Patrol Specials, the first Bloody Mary or Mimosa is just three bucks. The Narragansett Cafe (NarragansettCafe.com) in Jamestown has been livening up Sunday mornings for years with their Sunday Blues, Bloodies and Brunch. When you add in no cover charge, their famous Fish and Chips and strong drinks, there’s no reason not to hang at the Ganny. Spring Guide 2017 |
