Nothing says “summer” like a sweaty and stylized photographed cup of frozen lemonade
THE ANATOMY OF A DEL’S POST
How to perfect the art of bragging with RI’s favorite social media photo prop If there’s any sure sign of summer in Rhode Island it’s the obligatory Instagram post of your first Del’s (or Mr. Lemon, you do you) of the season. But what may seem simple requires a surprising amount of forethought. What are you trying to say with your post? Are you trying to make your friends jealous? If so, consider certain factors, like when and where you’re posting. An iconic backdrop (think The Towers, Superman building) will have your friends’ inner Liz Lemon gasping “I want to go to there” before their thumb can double tap. Posting just after the weekday lunch hour is also guaranteed to drive followers into an HeyRhody.com
envious tailspin. We won’t tell if you took the photo over the weekend and saved it for the moment where it will inflict the most FOMO. In fact, that’s a pro move and we approve. Other considerations: the cup should be sweaty, but not too sweaty. A few, big droplets running down the side will go a long way. Also, approach your post casually, so as to not come off as a try hard. “Driving back to the office and spotted a #Del’s cart, couldn’t not stop,” comes across as playful and shows that you’re a free spirit. In reality, you’ve been planning this since last fall. 2018 HEY RHODY SUMMER

Harbor Lights in Warwick
We’re the Ocean State, and Rhodies have an unquenchable love of water. But sometimes we want that water clear, jellyfish-free, and within reaching distance of a mojito. Here are four private pools that offer short-term passes for tan-seeking visitors. Aqua in Providence On a sunny day, you could almost convince yourself that Aqua was a Floridian resort. The pool is ringed with canopy beds. You can backstroke through a brick wall, deciding whether to swim indoors or outdoors. The bar pours a never-ending stream of tequila, and everywhere you look there’s a plateful of tapas. But this isn’t the Keys; it’s the Marriott Providence Downtown. The $20 getaway package gets you a day-pass, two sports bottles, and two signature cocktails. Providence, MarriottProvidence.com

Hillside Country Club in Rehoboth Hillside’s kidney-shaped pool has the usual amenities: reclining deck chairs, a pair of kid-friendly slides, and a comfortable shower room. But few pools in the region are heated, and fewer still contain salt water. This country club is famously available to day-trippers, and anyone is welcome to apply for a season pass, which also entitles you to discounts on the golf course and Cristallo Spa. Day-passes depend on popularity, and you may have to join a wait-list. But if you find yourself in Rehoboth often, it’s worth signing up. Rehoboth, HillsideCountryClub.com
Harbor Lights in Warwick Picture a wedding on the Rhode Island coast, and money is no object. What do you see? A marina full of sleek sloops? Grilled steak with views of the water? How about a poolside tiki bar? Harbor Lights has all of this, and you can visit any day of the week to catch some sun and a few cocktails by the infinity pool. A limited number of day passes are available for $20. Savoring the sunset? Stick around and enjoy live music four nights out of the week. Warwick, HarborLightsRI.com
The Last Resort in Smithfield The Last Resort is a sprawling establishment, with concert grounds, a massive tiki bar, and a vast swimming pool. This isn’t the kind of mild-mannered getaway you visit with your grandparents; describing itself as “Vegas-style,” The Last Resort is a place to kick back and party. Lounging in the crystal waters is the main draw, and you can score a day-pass for $10, but you may also enjoy some beach volleyball, pizza, or any of a dozen music acts each month. BROWSING • BRIDGE TRIVIA
GET OVER IT Like it or not, you’re going to have to cross a few bridges this summer By Tony Pacitti
There’s one cold hard truth about summer in Rhode Island that we all need to be okay with: to get the most out of the season, we’re eventually going to have to drive over a bridge. Maybe even a few of them. This year, instead of rolling your eyes when your friend points out that a fun destination is – ugh – on the other side of a bridge, impress them with these bits of trivia.
Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge • Opened in 1969 • Longest suspension bridge in New England • Pedestrians are only allowed to cross the bridge during the annual Pell Bridge Run

Sakonnet River Bridge • Original bridge opened in 1956, the new one opened in 2012 • The original bridge was almost part of Interstate 895, a highway that was never made • Demolition of the old bridge is expected to be complete in 2020
Mount Hope Bridge • Opened in 1929 • Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 • In 1931, Narragansett Beer president and Chairman Rudolf Haffenreffer acquired the bridge after its original owners went bankrupt

EAST PROVIDENCE ROCKS
Bold Point Park brings big names back to the RI outdoor concert scene
Late last summer, when The Beach Boys and Kenny Wayne Shepherd came to rock out in Rhode Island, they didn’t come to Providence or Newport, they came to East Providence’s Bold Point Park, kicking off a new summer tradition of big name performers playing under the 401 sun. The venue’s first full season as the state’s newest outdoor concert space started on Memorial Day weekend, and the organizers behind this unexpected waterfront destination are pulling out all the stops and kicking out all the jams through the end of the summer. Bold Point Park fills a void in music lovers’ hearts the size of the Newport Yachting Center – which makes sense since it’s run by the same people. It might have seemed like an unlikely place for a concert venue, but Michele Maker Palmieri and her team at RI Waterfront Events have nothing if not vision.

HEY RHODY SUMMER 2018
The Newport Yachting Center was the home of beloved annual festivals and summer concerts like the Reggae Festival, Oktoberfest, and the Chowder Cook-Off. The center’s stage hosted big names in music and comedy, including BB King, Alanis Morissette, and Amy Schumer. But in 2014, the Yachting Center was sold, leaving these annual events without a stage and the team that pulled them together out of work. Palmieri, the Yachting Center’s general manager at the time, suddenly found herself with a roster of summer events, a good working relationship with the booking company Live Nation, and nothing to do with either of them. “I knew that we needed to find a new home,” Palmieri says. “So I went to my event team and they said, ‘We’re on board if you want to do it,’ so crazy me created a company and we took the show on the road.”
For two years, Rhode Island Waterfront Events set up stages wherever they could find them. The Chowder Cook-Off took root at Fort Adams in Newport, while the Reggae Festival moved to Providence’s India Point Park in 2015 and 2016. The company also launched a Latin music festival and hosted classic rockers the J. Geils Band at India Point. The whole time, though, they were looking for a place they could call their own. “We were at the Reggae Festival [in 2015], and when we looked across the river we saw all of this undeveloped waterfront,” says Palmieri. “We came to East Providence and talked with the city manager and city planner, and got the discussions going to see if we could set up a seasonal concert venue.” As soon as Palmieri and her team saw Bold Point Park, they knew it had the makings of the seasonal, outdoor music venue that

Great-Grandfather DeLucia made his first frozen lemonade back in Italy in 1840. During the winter, he carried snow into nearby caves and insulated it with straw. When summer arrived, he mixed the snow with fresh, local lemon juice and sugar, making a refreshing drink. His grandson, Angelo, introduced this icy treat to Rhode Island in 1948, and today there are over 30 Del’s stands across America. ’Gansett is proud to present this delicious Shandy with the perfect balance of Narragansett Lager and lemon flavor. It’s refreshingly different!

they’d been looking for – and that Rhode Island had been missing since the sale of the Yachting Center. Live Nation had imagined the Newport Yachting Center as a smaller version of Boston’s Blue Hills Bank Pavilion; Bold Point Park fits that same template. This summe’s lineup of performers includes Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly (June 16), The Roots (July 1), Halsey (July 11), and Michael Franti & Spearhead (July 18). For the little rockers in your life, Kidz Bop Live (August 24) will be belting out kid-friendly renditions of pop hits. We’re not picking a favorite, but The Roots almost seems too cool to be true, but it is, and we can’t wait. You’re definitely going to want to keep this spot on your radar. SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS
Get a new perspective on familiar sights with a helicopter tour Typically, summer in Rhode Island is a by-land-and-by-sea kind of affair, though most of us know this state inside and out by all land-locked and nautical vantage points. In the spirit of shaking things up, we propose taking it to the sky. Heliblock runs charters as well as guided tours between Westerly and Block Island. Some of their tours include a trip over the Block Island Wind Farm or an aerial lap around the island. Over the mainland, tours glide over Watch Hill, Misquamicut Beach, and, yes, even Taylor Swift’s house. Flying over Aquidneck Island is Newport Helicopters Tours, which circles the Newport Mansions and lighthouses. They’ll even take you further up for a bird’s-eye view of Bristol and Providence. Seeing the state from hundreds of feet up is one thing, but for wannabe pilots out there, both companies offer demo flights, letting you get your hands on the controls and actually pilot the helicopter. A real pilot will be sitting next to you with their hands on the controls as well, but you can leave that part out when you’re bragging to your friends back on the ground. EXPLORING • FUN STUFF
FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT Let out your inner child of summer at these fun spots Believe it or not, you don’t have to go to the beach to cool off in summer – just ask the folks at the Yawgoo Valley Water Park. Take a dip in the pool, or cruise down one of their two waterslides. Loud whoops of excitement and singing of Paul Simon’s “Slip Slidin’ Away” are highly encouraged. Exeter, Yawgoo.com
By Miles Temel
Yawgoo Valley Water Park
Roger Williams Park Zoo
As one of Rhode Island’s most wellknown attractions, it’s practically mandatory to go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo with the family at least once this season. Carousel Village features plenty of activities for families to bounce, ride, and play, and thrillseekers can cruise 115 feet above the zoo in the newly added Soaring Eagle Zip Ride. Oh, and there’s that part with all the animals, too. Providence, RWPZoo.org
Make a list of quintessential summertime amusement activities, and Adventureland will have all of them. Mini golf, go karts, batting cages, ice cream stand, carousel, bumper boats – you name it, it’s there. Their newest attractions, as of last summer, are three 25foot Extreme Big Air Jumpers. All they ask is that you be sure to save some good times for the rest of South County. Narragansett, AdventurelandRI.com
If the waves are getting to be too much, just aim the boogie board a little to the left of the towels, and you’ll wash right up at Atlantic Beach Park for summer entertainment. There are bumper cars, monkey barrels, an arcade, a kiddie coaster, and a carousel dating back to 1915 to enjoy. After you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a bite to eat at the snack bar and polish it off with a scoop from the ice cream stand – we won’t be upset if you don’t have room for dinner. Westerly, AtlanticBeachPark.com
To experience a slice of Gilded Age charm outside of Newport’s mansions, look no further than the Looff Carousel at Crescent Park. This landmark has been spinning since 1895, and is one of Rhode Island’s officially-designated National Historic Landmarks. The carousel is currently undergoing some restoration projects, but fear not – the folks at Crescent Park promise it will welcome riders this summer. Riverside, CrescentParkCarousel.org
If you take a walk off the Misquamicut Beach along Atlantic Avenue, you’ll be at Bayview Fun Park before you have the time to shake the sand off your feet. With go-karts, batting cages, mini-golf, and bumper boats, this is an ideal spot to take a break from the sand and surf. Spend some time there, take a plunge in the ocean when you get hot, then head back over and repeat. Westerly
In the dog days of summer, it can seem like there’s no space for a blanket bigger than a postage stamp at Misquamicut Beach. Fortunately, Water Wizz of Westerly is right up the road for anyone looking to stay cool, and have some serious fun doing so. With over 1,000 feet of waterslides, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy themselves, from the Little Dipper slide for young riders to the Super Speed racing slides for that friend who makes everything into a competition. Westerly, WaterWizzRI.com
The Flying Horse Carousel stands tucked at the end of Watch Hill’s main drag – a fairly modest spot for the oldest suspended-horse carousel in the country. Just steps from the sand, the horses have been delighting visitors to the South County seaside since the 1870s. Grab the brass ring and you win a free ride, but we have a feeling you’ll want to take another spin anyway. Watch Hill

EXPLORING • KAYAKING
Waterways aren’t our natural habitat, but it’s fascinating to spot the critters who call our rivers and oceans home. Narrow River Kayak offers kayak and stand-up paddle board (SUP) rentals, as well as sunrise and full moon tours, but what really stand out are their guided eco tours. Narrow River’s resident Master Naturalist Guide will take paddlers out to learn all about the fishy and feathered friends that live in the John H. Chaffee National Wildlife Refuge. Narragansett, NarrowRiverKayaks.com
The Kayak Centre rents kayaks and SUPs and offers lessons from their Wickford and Charlestown locations. New paddlers can take a beginner class, or try an advanced class to sharpen their skills. Tours branch off into two categories, Gentle Adventures and Coastal Tours, which explore everything from Wickford Harbor and Ninigret Pond to the coastline of Jamestown and Newport. Wickford and Charlestown, KayakCentre.com

Paddling can be a very calming experience, but is there even such a thing as being too relaxed? Jamestown Outdoors – in addition to kayak and SUP rentals, sunrise and eco tours, and paddling instruction – adds a very zen element to summer on the water: SUP Yoga. Improve your balance and core strength, all while soaking in the sun and floating off of Fort Getty. Jamestown, JamestownOutdoors.com

AN ISLAND DAYCATION AWAITS How to get the most out of Block Island in a single day By Jeanette St. Pierre
Champlin’s Resort
7am: Arrive to the ferry port in Point Judith You’ll need a form of transportation to see most of Block Island’s roughly 10 square miles of land. Renting mopeds, bikes, and Jeeps are all options on island, but the best bang for your buck and time is to BYO. Bikes are $7 each and a standard vehicle is $80, both roundtrip, on the Block Island Ferry. Note that cars require advance reservations and to be checked in on dock an hour prior to the traditional ferry’s departure. BlockIslandFerry.com 8am: Ferry departs The traditional ferry is a 55 minute ride, which is ample time to rest up for the busy day ahead of you.

8:15am: Hit the snack bar While you try to relax, passenger after passenger walks by you with the best-looking Bloody Mary you’ve ever seen. “I’m on vacation,” you tell yourself when you order one. And then you officially are. 8:55am: Arrive on Block Island Bringing a car has another big bonus: passengers with vehicles are the first ones off the ferry. Nothing screams VIP like peeling off the dock while a boatload of people watch in pure envy. This daycation thing already looks good on you. 9am: Grab breakfast in Old Harbor Head over to Persephone’s Kitchen, a cozy cafe on Dodge Street, for egg and
avocado sandwiches, gluten-free banana bread, and their signature smoothie bowls – the perfect marriage of thickened fruit-based smoothies with granola. PersephonesKitchenBI.com 10am: Head to Southeast Light Stop by Southeast Light, one of two lighthouses on island, for a quick dose of history, architecture, and awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic and the Block Island Wind Farm – otherwise known as the Instagram Trifecta. 22 Mohegan Trail 11am: Peek at the Mohegan Bluffs You could spend an entire day walking down the 141 steps that lead to patches of near-perfect beaches complete with

The descent and climb back is challenging and time-consuming, so today you’ll take a peek from the top and half-check it off your BI bucket list. There, that felt good. 12pm: Go parasailing Your next stop is to Block Island Parasailing, where you’ll soar 500 to 800 feet up in the air for an unmatched view of the island from above. Though the entire ride only takes about 20 minutes, bragging rights are yours forever (or at least this summer). BlockIslandParasail.com

1pm: Pick up lunch to go The beach is your next respite/multi-tasking activity, and you’ll need to pick up some take-out for lunch to keep this Block Island boot camp… I mean island getaway… as efficient as possible. The Beachhead is not only conveniently located down the street from the town beach, it’s crazy delicious. Seafood is a must-order here. BeacheadBI.com 1:15pm: Pull up to the beach There are plenty of reasons why Fred Benson Town Beach is the best beach in Rhode Island. Free admission, white sand, clear-as-day water, hot showers, and on-site chair and umbrella rentals are a few of them. It’s also one of a few beaches where dogs are allowed, which just adds to the chill vibe. Grab your lunch, along with your beach chairs and towels from your trunk (you packed those, right?), and plop on the sand for a little down time. 3pm: Explore New Harbor Block Island has two harbors on opposite ends of the island: Old Harbor, the town’s busy hub that the BIF

SUMMER FESTIVALS RI PrideFest, now in its 43rd year, is celebrating the LGBTQ community with an all-day bash featuring live music, food, and more, all topped off by the Illuminated Night Parade, which makes its way from South Water Street through downtown. No doubt this year’s fest will live up to its theme, “Louder and Prouder.” Providence, June 16, PrideRI.org Providence has one of the largest Cape Verdean-American communities in the country, and everyone’s invited to party at the 43rd Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival. This annual celebration will bring traditional Cape Verdean food, art and music to India Point Park from noon until sundown. Providence. July 8, RICapeVerdeanHeritage.org Celebrating Japanese culture for the 35th year is the Black Ships Festival. This annual event commemorates the friendly ties between Newport and its Japanese sister city Shimoda. The events will include a stunning gala, traditional Japanese art, and a Taiko drum performance. Various locations in Bristol, July 13-15, BlackShipsFestival.com Soaring into its 40th year is the South County Balloon Festival. Sure, they’ll have food, rides, and a rock climbing wall, but what you’re really there for is the fleet of balloons. See the peaceful dirigibles light up for the Dusk Hot Air Balloon Glow or hop in the basket for a tethered balloon ride. Don’t forget to stick around for the fireworks! July 20-22,, Kingston. SouthCountyBalloonFest.com For the classically inclined, save the date for the Kingston Chamber Music Festival. Celebrating 30 years of established, international musicians playing alongside up-and-coming young talent, the Chamber Music Festival will feature the music of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart and more. July 25-August 5, University of Rhode Island. KingstonChamberMusic.org Last year it was decided that there was just too much fleet to bless, so the annual Blessing of the Fleet Festival expanded into a threeday affair! The seafood festival will run Thursday through Saturday in Memorial Square, followed by a 10-mile race on Friday and, of course, the actual Blessing of the Fleet in the port of Galilee on Saturday. Our suggestion? Eat a ton of seafood, run it all off, then eat a bunch more seafood as you watch the brightly decorated ships sail by. July 26-28, Narragansett. NarragansettLionsClub.org The Washington County Fair has everything you could possibly want out of a big, old-school summer festival. Livestock competitions, a ferris wheel and carnival rides, a pie eating contest, sunflower seed spitting competitions, and an epically muddy tug of war. As for the music, some of the country music world’s brightest stars are setting up shop in RI for five days, with performers like Lanco, Stephanie Quayle, and Mickey Lamantia taking the fair stage. OUTDOOR CONCERTS The Rhode Island Historical Society’s Concert Under the Elms brings an eclectic lineup of performers to the John Brown House lawn on the East Side every Thursday night, starting with the The Cajun Hobos. Steve Smith and the Nakeds, The Becky Chace Band and The Duke Robillard Band are just a few of the acts returning to the stage… er, lawn. Providence. Thursday nights June 21-August 2, RIHS.org Ballard’s has summer jams happening all season long, but if life is forcing you to pick and choose when you can get out to the island, we’ve got three dates you should keep in mind. On July 5 will have you dusting off your boots and spurs for Country Fest; August 13 moves island vibes up a few latitudinal degrees for Reggae Fest; and September 8 sends the summer off in style with RockFest. Decisions, decisions. Block Island, BallardsBI.com If there’s anything better than a rock show, it’s a rock show for a good cause. This year’s SummerFest is helping those in need through The Hunger Bus, a non-profit committed to ending hunger. Tribute acts Hey Nineteen and Another Tequila Sunrise will take the stage to play classic rock hits from Steely Dan and The Eagles, with folk artist Chakulla and comedian Mike Murray performing as well. ConserFest is music on a mission. Back for another rocking day of music on Block Island is a grassroots music festival dedicated to raising money and awareness for the island’s conservation efforts. This year’s festival will be headlined by The Rowan Brothers, with more performers to be announced throughout the summer. August 5, Block Island. ConserFest.org As summer winds down – say it ain’t so! – there’s one final blowout to look forward to, the Rhythm & Roots Festival. Last year introduced “glamping” to the three-day festival, giving festival goers who want the under-thestars experience without having to do the work a chance to rent out a pre-pitched tent complete with cots, a lantern, and a private toilet (of course the DIY route is still on the table). But really, it’s about the music, and this year’s lineup will feature Taj Mahal Trio, Steve Earle & the Dukes, and RI’s only acclaimed storyteller Len Cabral, among lots of others. We can’t think of a better way to send off our favorite season. August 31-September 2, Ninigret Park, Charlestown. RhythmAndRoots.com For a classic – and classical – night of music, look no further than the Roger Williams Park Pops featuring the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Bristol Fourth of July Parade
In Bristol, the Fourth of July is really a year round affair, but the annual celebration kicks into high gear on June 14 for Flag Day at Bristol Town Common, followed by the Fourth of July Ball at the Rhode Island Veterans Home on June 16. The concert series at Independence Park plugs in and rocks out for 13 night starting June 21. It all leads up to the big show on July 4, the annual and longest-runningin-the-nation Fourth of July parade, which you’ve no doubt already claimed your spot on the parade route. Wait… you haven’t?! Bristol, FourthOfJulyBristolRI.com Celebrate the Fourth a little early with the PawSox’s annual Independence Day fireworks show. The Sox will be taking on the Rochester Red Wings each night before an explosive, patriotic post-game display. July 2-3, Pawtucket. FOOD FESTIVALS June in South County tastes like strawberry shortcake. Celebrate the annual strawberry harvest with period-clad reenactors and docents at Smith’s Castle’s Strawberry Festival. August 3-5, Charlestown, Facebook: Charlestown Seafood Festival The New England Quahog Fest has a lot going for it. Think a sea creature parade, kayak races, and a mermaid photoshoot. PLAY BALL! The Newport Gulls and the Ocean State Waves are fielding tomorrow’s Major League stars By Adam Toobin • Photography by Tony Pacitti
In Rhode Island, baseball season has always meant the Red Sox – both Boston and Pawtucket. But recently, the success of two summer collegiate teams has opened a new frontier in the state’s long history with the national pastime. For the past two decades, once final exams are taken and caps and gowns stowed

away, college players seeking a ticket to the major leagues have come to Rhode Island to join in one of most elite training grounds in amateur baseball — the New England Collegiate Baseball League. All summer, the 13 teams that make up the NECBL play before crowds and scouts interested in a peek at the faces who may
be gracing tomorrow’s trading cards. For Rhode Islanders, that means a trip to see the Newport Gulls or the Ocean State Waves, two teams that, like their home state, play an outsized role in the competition. Rhode Islanders unfamiliar with the local NECBL presence may still recognize Cardines Field in downtown Newport, the

teams in national collegiate baseball. “The players come here to get better. They’re here to hone their skills, and quite frankly they’re here to prepare for the draft,” said Paiva. “Summer wood bat leagues exist because these scouts want to see them hit with a wood bat.” More than 250 Gulls alumni have now been drafted into professional baseball, including 15 who have made it into Major League Baseball. This deep bench of alumni has helped build the Gulls into a national force with a presence known far outside of Rhody’s narrow borders. But now, having reached the upper decks of collegiate baseball, the Gulls are facing perhaps their stiffest
competition yet, and from the other side of the state. For Matt Finlayson, owner and GM of the Ocean State Waves since its founding 2013, it’s no coincidence that their team has emerged in the shadows of the dynastic Gulls. “I’ve been in Chuck’s office all the time – since day one he’s been a mentor to me,” said Finlayson. “He taught me how to build a roster, how to market, how to build a successful operation.” And in just the past few seasons, the Waves have already assembled a set of worthy credentials. Last season, the team tallied the best regular-season record in the NECBL and

home of the Gulls. One of the oldest ballparks in America, Cardines houses about 3,000 seats. And on the cool summer nights in Newport, when the lights turn on and the families turn out, almost every one is filled. The squad’s record as the winningest team in the NECBL certainly helps, as does the in-house bar, but there’s no question that a night at Cardines has grown to define collegiate summer ball at its best. Chuck Paiva, owner and General Manager of the Gulls for nearly two decades, who led the team’s migration across the bay from its original home in Cranston, has leveraged the team’s local celebrity to establish the Gulls as one of the most dominant

earned its first berth in the division championships before falling to the Valley Blue Sox in a 2-0 series. About 38 percent of players who have spent a season with the Waves have been drafted into the major leagues, totaling about 30 overall. And the offseason has already yielded a major victory for the franchise, as word came down in late April that Mike Gerber – of the 2013 Waves — would be the first former alum to step foot on an MLB diamond. With such a rapid accession to the heights of the NECBL, it may be fair to wonder whether the Waves have truly built a solid enough foundation on which to compete over the long term. However, the legions of fans and supporters who have rallied to games at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown don’t doubt that the team has achieved

something special. Chris Hess, a former Ocean State Wave and URI ballplayer who grew up in South County, remembers watching Waves games while still in high school. Now, having been drafted by the New York Yankees organization and in his first season on the minor league Charlestown RiverDogs, he recalls how his summer with the Waves prepared him for the big leagues. “The league’s really good. It lets you build your confidence, and if you played well, you can get scouted,” Hess said. Ultimately, far from dividing the state, the Waves and the Gulls are building a new baseball community that is bringing people together. For Rhode Islanders, the only difficulty will be figuring out which of the two local powerhouses is the home team. NewportGulls.com; OceanStateWaves.com

The Nitro Cart Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
CAFFEINE ON TAP
Keep your pre-beach coffee fix on trend with nitro brew Nothing comes betweenRhode Islanders and our perfectly chilled cup of caffeine, but there’s plenty to shake it up – in this case, we’re talking about nitro cold brew. Think of it as an iced coffee that’s served like a beer. The cold brew java is stored in a keg and infused with nitrogen, giving it a nice, frothy pour not unlike a stout. The best part is it goes down so smooth that you can drink it as-is, but if you’ve gotta have that extra-extra, we’re not going to stop you. The Nitro Cart has cold brew taps at more than 30 locations all over the state, including their cafe on Broadway in Providence. The original mobile cart still makes weekly pop-up appearances. The Shop on Providence’s East Side cold brews their own nitro in-house, and The Nook Coffee House in East Greenwich stocks kegs from Pawtucket-based New Harvest Coffee Roasters. Summer’s here, and all we want to eat is seafood, preferably fried and with a great ocean view. To motivate us all through an indulgent season of flipper-licking food, here’s a checklist of 10(ish) clam shacks we all need to hit this season.

THE HIGH LIFE
10 rooftop decks open for summer brews and views By Robert Isenberg
The Rooftop at Providence G
1. Nothing says luxury like a fire pit on top of a downtown highrise. Rooftop at the Providence G offers the only patio of its kind in the city, with head-spinning perspectives of the Providence skyline – and the bar has the cocktails and wine
Now a restaurant, the panorama from the upper deck remains all-encompassing. The restaurant hosts live music through the summer. Narragansett, TheCoastGuardHouse.com
selection to match. Providence, RooftopAtTheG.com
4. Banjamin’s Raw Bar is known for its nautical ambiance, which extends to its varnished wood rooftop, nicknamed The Crow’s Nest. Spoil yourself with any variety of north Atlantic seafood. Newport, BenjaminsRawBar.com
2. Phil’s Main Street Grille is a pillar of the Wakefield dining scene, and at the top of that pillar is the famous roof deck. Yes, tables overlook leafy Main Street, and the central bar is perfect for open-air cavorting. Wakefield, PhilsMainStreetGrille.com 3. The Coast Guard House was originally designed to overlook Narragansett Town Beach.

5. Plank floors and beach umbrellas – and one of the most renowned views in Rhode Island – are part of what make Hotel Viking world-famous. The menu at Top of Newport
Bar & Restaurant is amazingly reasonable, but you can also splurge on the Caviar Board. Newport, HotelViking.com 6. At Midtown Oyster Bar, you have two options: the second-floor “Burgee Deck” that looms over Thames Street, and the Loft Deck, the highest point in Midtown. Newport, MidtownOyster.com 7. From the Vanderbilt Grace, you can see the marina stretched out before you. Recline in an Adirondack chair, sip a flute of bubbly, and take in that breathtaking sunset over the harbor. Newport, GraceHotels.com/Vanderbilt 8. The white-and-blue color scheme
of the Chair 5 roof deck perfectly compliments the clouds and ocean that surround it. Stay a night at The Break Hotel, or just stop in for the rooftop “appy hour.” Narragansett, TheBreakHotel.com/Chair5 9. The name Harbor View Bar pretty much says it all, but you still have to see it to believe it. Fluke Newport serves up summer-defining seafood and cocktails on their stunning rooftop deck at Bannister’s Wharf. Newport, FlukeNewport.com 10. Watch sailboats ease down the waters of Rumstick Shoal as you enjoy calamari and stuffies at Thames Waterside Bar and Grill. Bristol, Facebook: Thames Waterside

DINING • SEASONAL BREWS
SUMMER SIXER
Local brews that deserve a place in your cooler By Wendell Clough
Revival You Thirsty? New England IPA BeerAdvocate labeled the New England IPA its own style in May of 2017, but the craving for hazy, juicy, hop-dominant beer goes back much further. This is brewmaster Sean Larkin's take on the style, and nothing overwhelms, even as there's a lot going on in the nose, the mouthfeel and the finish. Some reviews note mango, honeydew, pineapple, and peach, and none of the beat-you-into-submission bitterness that those who avoid IPA's complain about. An IPA that's easy to drink. Have you had one? This is one.
Foolproof Ocean State Lager Out of town friends and family are coming, and you don’t know what they drink? Need a beer to have when you’re having more than one? This brand new beer from the mind of Nick Garrison is closer to what non-beer-snobs (i.e. regular folks) call “beer,” and relatively inexpensive for something brewed at a craft brewery. Load up and enjoy a traditional lawnmower beer flavor, only much better. The out-of-towners will like that it’s local, and has a lighthouse on the can and “Ocean State” in the name.
Whalers Rise APA Did you have Rise’s excellent version of an American Pale Ale once or twice and then set out for newer and wackier styles? C’mon back and remind yourself that it’s not exactly common in 2018 to find a lightly fruity, biscuity pale ale that offers all the complexity of flavor you want without bashing in your cranium with all of them. Because that’s really what you want in the summer.
Narragansett Fresh Catch Twenty years ago, blonde ales were brewed for consumers scared of anything past BudMilCoorHeinona. Now, blonde ales are a chance to challenge your brewer to create a golden-colored flavorful ale with notes of grapefruit that will offset your favorite lobster, shrimp, and white-fleshed fish dishes. IPA snobs who realized that the cold citrus tang of a great pilsner is remarkably similar to (but more summer-subtle than) enjoying a hop monster owe themselves a few Fresh Catches while the sun climbs high.
Sons of Liberty Loyal Lemonade Part of what makes beer so perfect in the summer is its portability. Who wants to lug a handle of vodka and all the mixers to an outdoor get together, really? Sons of Liberty, who have been rolling out great surprises since (holy smokes, since 2009? Time flies when you are enjoying your local distillery) have put an ethereal combination of vodka and all-natural flavors into a very portable container. At 9% ABV, you will want plenty of ice if you are starting at noon. And unlike beer, you should totally muddle your favorite fruit into Loyal Lemonade. Sons of Liberty suggests rosemary. Good call.
Grey Sail Hazy Days Like your favorite uncle at a bonfire, it’s sometimes fun to appreciate the unfiltered. This is a sterling example of the Belgian Wit style… which means nothing if you’ve never had one, so how about this: pair this with steamed mussels, herbed cheeseand-crackers, or desserts with bananas or orange. You will see why the wit style is a gateway beer for the wine or cocktail enthusiast who likes a little tang or a little spice.

DINING • TROPICAL COCKTAILS
EVERYTHING BIG Nothing says “summer” like a huge, fruity cocktail
When it gets warm, the only things we want are sunshine and cocktails. Lucky for us Rhode Island has many places to imbibe outdoors and take in some rays – one glass at a time. Here are four particularly festive recommendations that will help you toast to the season. By Meghan H. Follet
Goombay Smash At Ballard’s Inn on Block Island, you can enjoy any one of their fine cocktails in an Insta-worthy real pineapple, all while keeping your toes in the sand. We recommend the signature Goombay Smash, a tantalizing mix of coconut rum, banana liqueur, and fruit juices that scream summer. Stop by one of their beachfront tiki bars and grab a seat to enjoy the full Island experience. Block Island, BallardsBI.com
Blue Hawaii Blue Hawaii is not only the name of a classic Elvis movie; it’s also the name of a delicious ocean-hued cocktail at Ogie’s Trailer Park in Providence. Out on Ogie’s patio, where the trailers are hitched up ‘round the firepit, you can also find a small tiki bar that mixes up these tropical concoctions during the summer months. This nostalgic classic is made with rum, vodka, pineapple, sweet and sour, and blue curacao. It’s a tasty combo that won’t make you feel like you ate a whole bag of sugar. I mean, no judgement here… what would Elvis do? Providence. OgiesTrailerPark.com
Strawberry Basil Chi Chi If you’re looking for a refreshing selection, head to George’s of Galilee. There you’ll find the Strawberry Basil Chi Chi, which was selected by the Food Network as the highlight beverage from one of its “Top Places to Eat.” The Chi Chi is made with local ingredients, perfect for sipping while soaking up the beautiful fishing village view. It features Wakefield’s own Sons of Liberty Spirits’ Loyal 9 vodka alongside piña colada and strawberry purees, and is topped with a basil leaf. Cheers! Narragansett, GeorgesOfGalilee.com
The Shark Attack Along the quaint family-friendly shores of Misquamicut lies a deadly creature: the Shark Attack. Paddy’s Beach Club goes for the whole fishbowl of booze, giving you more bang for your buck. You can drown yourself in the sweet tastes of coconut rum, fruit juices, and two sharks filled with a “Paddy Wagon” shot in each order. With that much to offer, this may be the only attack we recommend sharing with a friend. Westerly, PaddysBeach.com Photography by Stacey Doyle

DINING • FROZEN DESSERT
MOLTO GELATO!
Leaner and more flavorful than ice cream, gelato is a summer standby By Robert Isenberg
Like ice cream, gelato contains milk, cream, and sugar, and it’s churned in almost any flavor imaginable. Yet gelato isn’t ice cream. So what’s the difference? True gelato makers could explain their craft for hours, recounting precise measurements of butterfat. But on a hot day, it’s better to just take a tiny spoon, taste its unique texture, and be amazed. Here are four places to do just that. Cold Fusion Gelato If you have a pulse, you will probably hear the phrase “Dark Chocolate Sea Salt” and grow instantly hungry. But if, for whatever reason, that sweet-savory combo doesn’t suit your palate, Cold Fusion has 33 other handmade flavors ready for the tasting. Summer in Newport is already a sublime experience, but artisan gelato and sorbets make it all the sweeter. Imagine yourself strolling down Thames Street, caressed by an ocean breeze, as you savor spoonfuls of Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. You can even pick up pints or 1.5-gallon boxes for a late-night binge. Newport, ColdFusionGelato.com
HeyRhody.com
Nana’s Ice Cream & Gelato A sunny visit to the beach basically requires a waffle cone. Nana’s Ice Cream & Gelato, a short walk from Narragansett Beach, serves both types of creamy goodness, and the options are dizzying: cones and sundaes, smoothies and milkshakes, soft serve and sugar-free ice cream, iced coffee and ice cubes made of coffee, plus 50 flavors to choose from. The shop is already overflowing with sugary options, but you can also slip into Nana’s Candy Bar next door, where the shelves are stacked with fudge and taffy, and you’re encouraged fill up a plastic bucket with hard candies. Nana’s may not help your beach body, but this gelateria is a seaside treasure. Narragansett, NanasGelato.com
Amoré Espresso Gelato Bar Hot and cold, bitter and sweet – opposite flavors often harmonize, and no combination is better than gelato and espresso. Standing on a quiet stretch of Pearl Street near the RI Hospital campus, Amoré is an intimate cafe housed in a Victorian cottage, where guests can sip cappuccinos and hot apple cider all day. When the weather warms up, the pavement outside is ringed with bistro tables, and visitors feast on Amoré’s famous pistachio gelato. This gelateria offers a nice respite from the bustle of Downcity, and you can even stick around for panini sandwich or goat cheese salad, among other lunch offerings. Providence, AmorePVD.com
Medici Gelato Maple Avenue in Barrington is one of those perfect residential streets, with shingled houses and manicured lawns, so of course there would be a quaint little gelato shop. Medici Gelato has been serving customers since 2014, when Jean and Bob Robertson bought the property. In addition to their regular flavors, the Robertsons make a coffee-saturated affogato and a rice-milk gelato that is gluten-free. As for the name: ice cream was supposedly invented at the behest of Catherine de Medici, but the building also belonged to the late John Medici, former police chief of Barrington. Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services has a 60 yard blower truck that can lay down mulch in less than an hour
Mulch Ma de Easy Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services installs mulch in an innovative and efficient way Alicia and Nick Donadio have a unique business: their Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services blows mulch into garden beds, saving homeowners and landscapers countless hours of work. In fact, they’re the only operation in the state that has a 60 yard Express Blower Truck. We recently caught up with Alicia to learn more about their innovative mulch service.
How does blown-in mulch work? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. When the truck arrives at the property, long hoses are pulled from the truck around the property to install the mulch directly into the beds at the depth the customer requests. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. Normally, the process involves bringing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow over to the beds one at a time. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work. Our process is significantly faster and more convenient. What types of properties do you service? Can you do small properties? If mulch needs to be installed, we can do it! We service both commercial and residential properties throughout Rhode Island. And yes, we can install our products on smaller properties with a 10 yard minimum. What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We have all kinds of mulches: brown, black, pine,

cedar, and more. Many are all-natural, some are color enhanced or organically enhanced. Our other services include Soil and Compost applications, Terraseeding, Certified Playground Chip installations and Erosion Controls like Silt Sock. What are the benefits of mulch? Mulch is not only a fast way to make your property look its best, it’s also very beneficial to your soil and plants. It helps suppress weeds, retains moisture, adds nutrients, and moderates soil temperature. How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? Well, every property is unique; it really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour. What do you say to skeptics? We have always told potential customers, “Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year.” Once they see us pull that off fast and efficiently, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.

LAST LOOK
Fire dancer Elizabeth Knights of Cirque De Light performing at WaterFire
THE FIRE DANCER Words and photography by Wolf Matthewson The rhythmic pulse of drumming echoes through the city at nightfall as rows of crackling bonfires illuminate the waterways of downtown Providence. A long black boat with a fire dancer at the bow emerges through heat, smoke, and flame, as if a mirage. All are enchanted. Small children gaze in wonder; dreaming of the magical possibilities that life might hold in the future while adults drift back to a time when they believed magic was still a possibility. And the flames, under the artistic spell of the fire dancer, brush the evening canvas of WaterFire in dazzling strokes of light and shadow, flickering and whirling their way down the river.
