BROWSING FESTIVALS | LITTLE LIBRARIES | QUIRKY FALL SPORTS | AUTUMN VIEWS Runners make their way through the spooky Providence RIPTA tunnel at the Monster Dash 5k

RUNNING SCARED

The Providence Monster Dash 5k will have you racing for your life Imagery of frightened people running from something is common this time of year. Scary movies pop up in theaters and on cable TV like the creatures that their heroes and victims are trying to outwit, promising scares by the dozen if you dare to peek through tightly pinched eyelids. But if you’re an adrenaline junkie who needs something more than another Nightmare on Elm Street marathon to get you in the spooky spirit, why not find out if you have what it takes to outrun whatever goes bump in the night. The Monster Dash 5k is an annual race through downtown Providence that has two things going for it if you prefer your exercise with HeyRhody.com

an ample dose of fear. One, it gives participants a chance to (legally) run through downtown’s RIPTA tunnel – 2,000 feet of echoing concrete and mood lighting. Two, that tunnel is filled with zombies, which is more incentive to get the lead out than meeting your FitBit’s daily step quota if you ask us. Costumes are encouraged and a kid-friendly 1k is on the schedule for little boils and ghouls. It’s all in good fun of course; to the best of our knowledge, these aren’t real zombies, but why take the chance? Run! October 28, Providence, MonsterDashRace.com -Tony Pacitti 2018 HEY RHODY FALL

HURLING TAKES THE FIELD The ancient Irish sport – called the fastest game on grass – finds a home in Providence By Bob Curley Photography by Mike Braca

18

HEY RHODY FALL 2018

HeyRhody.com

To watch a hurling match as a neophyte is to strain for parallels: Is it soccer with sticks? A mashup of football and baseball? Field hockey with a bad attitude? The truth is that hurling predates them all. It’s a 3,000-year-old Irish ball sport with a cult following in Rhode Island, where the Providence Hurling Club takes on teams from Hartford, Worcester, Concord, and Portland, Maine, as part of the North American Gaelic Athletic Association. Founded in 2015, the club plays its home games at the Armand E. Batastini, Jr. Rec Center in Providence, the rare facility with the odd field dimensions (150 yards by 90 yards) needed for a hurling pitch. This being an Irish sport, post-match victory toasts and drowning of sorrows commence with a craic at Patrick’s Pub on Smith Street (not coincidentally, the bar is also the team’s sponsor). Providence Hurling Club chairman Mike Kennelly says “hurlers” range in age from the teens to mid-40s. Dubbed “the fastest game on grass,” hurling pits two teams of 13 players against each other for a pair of 30-minute halves. Each player carries a “hurley” – a stick used to scoop, carry, and bat the ball – while advancing down the field. A ball batted into the opponent’s net is worth three points, while a shot that passes over the crossbar counts for a single point. The club is always looking for new players and fans; first-timers can get a little instruction and borrow some equipment (a helmet and a hurley) to find out if hurling is in their blood. “The sport draws players due to its unique blend of skills similar to elements found in hockey, soccer, baseball and lacrosse,” says Kennelly. “While many players are also drawn due to their Irish heritage, we have a good number of players that don’t have any Irish ancestry, but who love the sport and club.” Their fall pub league kicked off in September with a home games happening on October 13 and 20, and November 3. If you’re looking for an alternative to football, don’t miss the fastest game on grass. ProvidenceHurlingClub.com

GET CRAFTY

Take a stroll through the season’s art festivals By Tony Pacitti

Fall brings more than colorful foliage to Rhode Island. It also brings a wealth of artistic riches. Arts festivals pop up to take advantage of the last good stretch of outdoor weather before Old Man Winter traps us all indoors. Get out and explore these showcases of local makers, artists, and crafters while the most you’ll need is a cozy sweater.

One of the perks of having a world-class art institution right here in Providence is getting to marvel at the work created by its talented students and alumni. RISD Craft is an annual juried sale happening on October 6, featuring stunning works across all mediums. Providence, RISDCraft.com

Looking for the three Cs – crafts, classic cars, and a carnival? Look no further than Misquamicut FallFest, which is one last blowout at the beach September 14-16. See the work of local makers, drool over some vintage wheels, and take a spin on tilt-awhirl. Westerly, MisquamicutFestival.org The Pawtucket Arts Festival is an annual favorite that is celebrating 20 years of the art and vibrancy of Pawtucket. The festival is already underway, but events continue all through the month of September, like an exhibition featuring the work of veterans and their families at Gallery 175 (September 16), three stages of live music at the Downtown Rising Fest (September 22), and more. Pawtucket, PawtucketArtsFestival.org RHD-RI’s mission to enhance the lives of adults with developmental disabilities through the arts will be on display during the fourth annual Out There Art Fair on September 15 and 16. See “definitive Outsider Art” on display and support a great cause. Pawtucket, RHDRI.org

Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival at Artists’ Exchange is all-day family fun on September 23. Enjoy local artisans and arts activities, but really, it’s all about getting to enjoy the live music and theatrical performances Artists’ Exchange is known for. Cranston, Artists-Exchange.org The Scituate Art Festival has been a Columbus Day Weekend tradition in Rhode Island for more than half a century. Explore the works of local artists, browse antique dealers, and take in three days of live music from October 6-8. Throw in the local food court put up by community organizations and your long weekend is booked. North Scituate, ScituateArtFestival.org Celebrating a milestone of its own, the West Bay Open Studio Tour returns on October 20 and 21 for its tenth anniversary. TAKE A BOOK, LEAVE A BOOK Discover your new favorite book at Little Free Libraries all over RI

There’s a 50/50 chance that when I go to my favorite coffee shop, I forget to bring a book. Granted, there’s always something to read at the cafe, including a handy stack of free regional lifestyle publications (wink wink), but when I want to be that guy and hog the good seat by the window for a couple of hours, I want to do it with my nose deep in a book. Consider this your coffee reading time Plan B.

Scattered around the state are a bunch of these take-a-book-leave-a-book depositories, or Little Free Libraries. You’ve probably seen them on your travels – adorable little house-shaped cases filled with wellloved paperbacks and hardcovers looking for a new home. The idea is simple: if you see a book you like, take it. If you have some old books you don’t think you’ll read again and want to pass them on to other eager bookworms, leave ‘em. Each library is built by an individual, community, or organization with a love of reading and a desire to share exciting and wonderful worlds of words with their neighbors. That’s a philosophy I can get behind. I love my books, but I’d be lying if I said I needed to keep all of them. Favorites, copies signed by authors, something I know I’m going to read again, of course I’ll keep. But the rest are fond memories that add up quickly and make moving a pain. So slowly I’ve started to unload, dropping off a Zombie Survival Guide here and a copy of Ready Player One there – both fitting for this spooky season – giving the books I’ve been selfishly hoarding a chance to enrich, enrage, and inspire new readers. And now that the air has that crisp New England fall-ness to it, I can’t think of a better reason to take a walk than to discover that new favorite book you’ll be taking to the coffee shop. HEY RHODY FALL 2018

Stop us if you’ve heard this one: Two Rhode Islanders walk into a bar and decide to start a comedy festival. Okay, the punch line’s a little weak – and we don’t know if they planned this all in a bar – but the results have been pretty hilarious. The Rogue Island Comedy Festival, founded by Rhode Islanders Doug Key and Katie Latimer, is back this fall for another five days of big laughs in the City by the Sea. Since its humble origins in 2015, the festival has more than doubled in size, drawing hundreds of submissions from comics from all over the US and beyond.

Response last year, according to Latimer, was hugely positive. “Nearly all the shows sold out. It really couldn’t have gone much better.” 2017 featured a major headliner at the end of the weekend, but this year, the festival will go back to a format that is more reminiscent of its earlier years, with the focus really being on the entire weekend’s roster of comics and venues. Performances are spread over five days, kicking off with two big shows at the Jane Pickens Theater – including a live edition of the hit podcast Guys We F@#ked – followed by stacked lineups at the newly renovated Studio Three, two stages at the Firehouse Theater, and Gurney’s. The idea is to double down on quantity and quality, with nightly sets featuring a diverse group of six or seven comics performing. “People are surprised, they think they’re only going to see one or two comics,” says Latimer. Instead, each show will deliver on that festival feel, giving crowds a ton of laughs. This year’s headliners include comics who’ve appeared in Comedy Central, SNL, MTV, and Conan, and the full roster will feature more than 50 performers, including local hosts like festival founder Doug Key, Andrew Williams, and Brian Beaudoin. Comedy nerds take note. October 4-8, Newport, RogueIslandComedyFest.com

Kate Turner Folan “September marks the beginning of our dazzling autumn months in Rhode Island. Monarch butterflies flutter amongst the plentiful wildflowers at the edges of our shorelines and wildlife refuges. The honeybees are abundant and gathering the last of their winter sustenance. Many migrating birds roost atop our beautiful trees for a quick ‘farewell’ before moving on. All of nature is preparing for one of the most beautiful shows on earth, the fireworks of fall foliage. It is a wonderful time in the most beautiful place to live!” Follow her on Instagram @oceanstatekate

Derek Hogan “As a Narragansett native, I’ve always been partial to shooting around the coast. The ocean is nostalgic for me and will always be one of my favorite places to shoot around. Once the leaves start changing, though, you can find me somewhere in the woods trying to capture as much color as possible. Fall is easily my favorite time of the year!” Follow him on Instagram @otherderekhogan

Kayla Mandeville “I love shooting in Rhode Island, particularly in the fall, because for such a small state there are many places to explore: coastline, farmlands, city, wooded areas, and much more, which gives my photos so much variety. Leaf peeping is one of my favorite activities, which is a ton of fun to do in Rhode Island because you can literally drive through the entire state in less than one day!” Follow her on Instagram @k___elizabeth

EXPLORING PUMPKIN PATCHES | HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS | CORN MAZES | HORSEBACK RIDING Clark Farm in South Kingstown

PUMPKINS GALORE

Find the perfect pumpkin at any of the state’s 24 patches Fall is the only season associated with its own vegetable: the plump, orange pumpkin. It has most recently infiltrated your local coffee shop lattes and seasonal candle scents – did someone say pumpkin spice? – but nothing beats the nostalgic tradition of pumpkin picking. It was a hallmark of your autumns as a kid, and after so many years, you’re probably an expert. You’ll wander the rows of ready-to-pick pumpkins with the critical eye of a connoisseur, scanning the variety of shapes and sizes for the one. Maybe it’s tall and skinny, or squat and wide, but it’ll make the

perfect addition to your front stoop. And you won’t be alone, as dozens of pumpkin pickers meander the patch with you, each scoping for what might be considered the season’s prize trophy. Whether you pick it, paint it, or carve it, this popular gourd is an essential part of fall in Rhode Island. Thankfully, our state has no shortage of places to seek that perfect pumpkin – with dozens of farms, orchards, and gardens around the state prepping their patches, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. Continue to the next page for a map of pumpkin patches around the state.

EXPLORING • GEOCACHING

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX Explore RI this fall with the grown-up’s treasure hunt: geocaching and letterboxing By Megan Schmit Photography by Nick DelGiudice

I had never heard of letterboxing or geocaching before moving to Rhode Island. I’m no trailblazer, but I was intrigued to hear my coworker gush about her family’s successful experience, and after some light Google research, I decided I had to try out this treasure hunt for myself. Letterboxing can be traced to 19th century England, when hikers would leave postcards or letters in hidden boxes off obscure paths, found via word-of-mouth (today: online) clues. This older form can be considered the precursor to geocaching, for which participants use GPS to hide and seek a “cache,” a weatherproof container. When

seekers successfully finds the cache, they get to sign and date a little logbook inside. On a sunny weekday, I downloaded the Geocaching app on my phone and picked a nearby cache to seek during my lunch break. The app is convenient to use and offers information about each container: its difficulty, its size, the terrain, a short description left by the hider, and of course, its location pinned on a map. Simple enough, right? I prepared for a brisk walk through a local Providence park, wary only of “minor overgrowth” that the instructions had warned me about. Armed with just my phone and

embarrassingly improper footwear, I entered the woods where my coordinates led. After stumbling over a bunch of grabby tree roots, I found myself at the very edge of the park, which was marked by a chain-link fence. At this point, as I glanced around the leaf-littered ground, I began to realize geocaching was not necessarily a novice activity. I was in the right location, but after 30 determined minutes of searching through the growth and debris, I couldn’t find anything. I returned, scraped and sweaty, to the office. I had no box, but I did have a story. Geocaching – and letterboxing – is not

about an easy find. In fact, it’s not really about the box or cache at all. In my brief experience, it was about connecting – to the global community that both hides and finds the boxes; to the local community where the boxes are hidden; to the family and friends taken along for the adventure; and to yourself, as you channel your energy into something immersive. So, if you find yourself being called outdoors by a crisp fall breeze, I highly recommend you don’t settle for just a walk. Go for an adventure. SADDLE UP

Take in the stunning fall scenery on horseback By Megan Schmit

There are so many great ways to view fall foliage – by car, wending through back roads beneath a canopy of orange and red. By foot, hiking or jogging the beaten paths through leafy woods. By bike, flying on asphalt through New England’s postcard-worthy scenery. However, there is another way to appreciate the autumn setting: by horse. Whether you’re new to everything equestrian or a seasoned rider, horseback riding is a unique way to absorb autumn. You can observe the changing leaves up close and up high, while the soothing gait of your horse and rhythmic crunch of fallen leaves complete the serene, immersive experience. So, sport some boots and plaid, head to one of these five scenic stables in the state, and prepare to saddle up.

EXPLORING • CORN MAZES

MAZED AND CONFUSED Challenge your sense of direction and memory in one of Rhode Island’s fall corn mazes

Photo by Bird’s Eye View Helicopters courtesy of Escobar Farm

By Caroline Boyle

A highlight of the state’s most beautiful season are corn mazes. Seated upon acres of farmland, farmers cut intricate paths into their corn fields, oftentimes so complex that an aerial view reveals the shape of a wellknown character or pattern. A timeless family tradition, there’s no better way to spend a crisp, fall afternoon than getting lost – sometimes literally – in the feelings of the season. In a corn maze, there are loops and dead ends at every turn, making it nearly impossible to know where you’re going. Before

46

HEY RHODY FALL 2018

entering a maze, make sure you grab a map at the entrance (if they’re provided) which frequently contain additional challenges and riddles to keep you entertained through the duration of your adventure. If you’re feeling truly daring, enter the maze armed with just your wits and a willingness to find your way through trial and error. With towering walls of corn stalk on either side of you, you’ll have to rely on your general sense of direction to make it to the center (or the exit). However, a hot cup of

cider, a loved one by your side, and hours to kill makes getting lost a part of the fun. If you manage to escape, enjoy the additional festivities offered by the seasonal venue, like hayrides, pumpkin patches, apple picking, and more. Bonus: many mazes are open into the evening, giving you the chance to explore the winding paths with only the help of a flashlight for a spooky twist. Wherever and whenever you choose to participate in the fun of a corn maze, you’re sure to have an a-maze-ing time.

The

GHOSTS of Providence A haunted evening with the Providence Ghost Tour may have made a believer out of a skeptic

By Tony Pacitti

Photography by Tony Pacitti

I

Ghost Tour host Erin Newell

t was a humid, drizzly night when I joined the Providence Ghost Tour for a haunted jaunt through the city’s East Side. The weather was fitting for an evening of ghost stories, though I’ll concede that I wasn’t a believer when I pulled up to Prospect Terrace for the tour – far from it. I’ve never had any use for the supernatural. Sometimes the mind runs away with itself, filling in the unexplained gaps with notions of hidden forces, destiny, fate, and campfire chicanery. So says I, the educated, science-minded modern man who knows that ghosts are nothing but the work of an overactive imagination. Then I saw two ghosts.

deterred her from getting involved. If anything, prolonged interaction with the spirit world without a proper amount of respect and fear seems like a recipe for doom. As it neared 8pm, and the light of day faded farther down the cloud-covered horizon, Erin gathered the 12 tourists under the lamppost behind the monument to Roger Williams and asked us to consider “the secret history of where we live.” She told us about the apple tree whose roots consumed Williams’ corpse and savaged his bones, which now rest entombed below the statue. The tale was delivered with the theatricality you’d expect from a supernatural tour guide and served as a preview to the horrors and oddities to come. Then, we were off. We processed down Congdon to the Meeting Street steps for the tale of Amasa Sprague and the Irishman who was wrongfully hanged for his death. From there we headed to the Dexter House to learn about the nocturnal spooks that keep RISD kids up at night. Up on Benefit Street we stopped at the Athenaeum

for a story of love and loss Poe-style, complete with a recitation of the macabre “The Conqueror Worm.” At each stop, Erin had our undivided attention. Spooky as it all was, though, I wasn’t buying it. But I hadn’t expected to. I wasn’t looking for true horror, just a few scary stories to share with out-of-town friends as we stumble around the city after a night out. Halfway up George Street, Erin stopped to tell us about George Kelly, an eight-year-old boy who was thrown from a carriage after it struck a pothole. According to legend, a ghostly carriage appears on the street on the first, crisp fall night of the year. From there we made our way to the Annmary Brown Memorial, a combination private library and mausoleum. Maybe it was the particularly grisly details of George Kelly’s story or maybe because I was already familiar with the story of Annmary Brown, I allowed my imagination to linger a bit longer on the little boy and the carriage. Then, as we rounded George Street and made our way down

Courtney Edge-Mattos, who started Providence Ghost Tours in 2006 with Mike Gertrudes, warned me that this kind of thing might happen. “We’ve bumped into some cool characters, human and inhuman,” she says. Courtney, who considers herself to be a somewhat skeptical believer, has had her fair share of paranormal encounters in her years of mapping the unexplained, unusual and unseemly deaths that have made 02906 the preferred zip code of the damned. “I do think there’s validity to it and there’s something out there,” she says. The tour’s route changes every so often to accommodate the fluctuations of ghostly activity over time (natural phenomena like full moons and the equinox can serve as a signal booster for the undead) but they always faithfully depart from Prospect Terrace. My guide for the night, Erin Newell, has been leading brave souls around College Hill for five years. She was a fan first before joining the ranks of the PGT. “I’m a scaredy cat!” she confesses, but that doesn’t seem to have

Helping to Build Your Future Brown, I saw my first spectre – a small child, holding its knees to its chest, between a bush and a Goodwill donation box. I blinked and it was gone, and none of the corporeal objects or shadows on that corner seemed at all like the shape of a kid, no matter how much I squinted at them. Not to throw the W word around irresponsibly here, but I had a stone-cold case of the willies. Soon we found ourselves at University Hall at Brown University, which served as a military hospital during the Revolutionary War. If things go bump in the night on this tour, this is the place they do it. As Erin recounted the savagery of 18th-century medicine (they cut it off or you died), complete with a description of the stench of death that soaked into the building’s frame, a shadow darted across a window on the second floor. A few minutes later Erin pointed to that very window, informing us that the face of a long-dead revolutionary has been

known to peer out from it. At this point I was done. Get me home, turn on all the lights, please have my mommy come tuck me in. The rest of the tour is a blur. Chalk it up to the power of good storytelling – Erin was a pro, laying into the theatrics in all the right places, playing things more subtle and somber where necessary – or to the fact that after a long week I was just tired enough to read into strange shadows. Either way, by the time we got back to Prospect Terrace, I was thoroughly rattled. Time has done little to shake the sense of dread that settled into me that night, and I don’t know which is more frightening: that I saw what I think were two ghosts, or that my core belief in the nonexistence of supernatural beasties has been challenged. Do I believe now? That’s a hard question to answer. For now I’ll cop out and say I consider myself an apparition agnostic. ProvidenceGhostTour.com

The world of competitive pumpkin growing yields gigantic results at Frerichs Farm’s Farms’ Pumpkin Palooza

hat’s orange, weighs more than 2,000 pounds, and has provoked an international rivalry? No, this isn’t a political joke, but something far more serious. We’re talking, of course, about the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-off. In 2015, Ron Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island, carved up the record books with a 2,230-pound. pumpkin displayed at the 18th annual Pumpkin Palooza at Frerich’s Farm in Warren. The amateur farmer was also the first person to ever grow a pumpkin exceeding 1,500 pounds, back in 2006.

The annual Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Annual Weigh Off has seen world records set and broken throughout its 18 year history

Photography by Tony Pacitti

Each year, huge pumpkins are dropped from 75 feet and kids make a mad dash to gather up the seeds

Since then, however, pumpkin sizes have been expanding faster than a trick-or-treater’s stomach – and growers in Belgium, Switzerland, and Great Britain have taken the lead in producing giant pumpkins. In 2016, a Belgian man weighed in with a 2,624.6-pound pumpkin, a record that still stands. Fast forward to 2018’s Pumpkin Palooza, which will take place every weekend this year between September 9 and October 21. The annual event includes picking in the farm’s pumpkin patch, rides in a pumpkin coach, a hay pile for kids to play in, a pirate ship playground, and a mocked-up western town with gold panning. You can also get instruction on how to make a scarecrow to protect your own garden pumpkins from aerial invaders. By far, however, the highlight is the annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off, scheduled for October 6 (rain dates are October 7 and 8). The pumpkins will start arriving at around 9am, accompanied by music from the Big Red Barn Blue Grass Band and followed by the much-anticipated Pumpkin Drop at 11:30am. That’s when a donated monster pumpkin will plunge 75 feet before smashing on the ground, spreading cheer, guts, and precious seeds that can be scooped up by visitors who want to try to raise their own giant pumpkin next season. In the past, the drop has featured pumpkins weighing anywhere from 350 to 1,200 pounds. How big this year’s plummeting pumpkin will be depends on the generosity of local growers, says farm owner David Frerich, who promises a spectacular mess, regardless. “It blows your mind,” says Frerich who runs the event with his wife, Barbara. The official pumpkin weigh-in starts at noon, and anyone can bring their prize gourd to be weighed. Frerich says the weekend typically attracts 4,000 to 5,000 visitors with its budget-friendly admission ($5 per carload) and activities such as harides are just $1 per person. “We keep it reasonable, and people have a blast,” says Frerich. “It’s a real family event, and every year we add something new.” This year, for example, will be the

debut of the Pumpkin Man Racing Ramp – a race between wheeled, carved pumpkins. Should Rhode Islanders expect to see another record-breaking pumpkin this year? Probably not, says Wallace. “We had a great spring, but it’s just gotten too hot and humid, and there’s been too much rain recently,” says the former manager at the Quidnesset Country Club, who now has a booming business selling his Wallace Organic Wonder giant pumpkin seeds and proprietary soil blend (the latter infused with a beneficial fungi called mycorrhizal). Even in semi-retirement, raising giant pumpkins is practically a full-time job for Wallace, who puts in 40-plus hours a week on his crop every spring, summer, and fall. It’s a skill he learned from his father 25 years ago and one that, despite the challenging New England growing season, allows him to routinely produce pumpkins weighing in excess of one ton. Pumpkin Palooza typically includes 25 to 50 entries, including from what Wallace calls the 40 or so “serious growers” in Rhode Island as well as other New England states. But probably not from Belgium. “They’ve done a great job perfecting their greenhouse environment,” says Wallace of his overseas rivals, who in reality are viewed as friends and collaborators: the grower community freely shares seeds and knowledge in a friendly competition to see who will be first to top the 3,000-pound pumpkin mark. Absent a phenomenal local growing season, the odds are probably on the greenhouse growers in Europe, Wallace admits. “In New England, it’s very difficult to grow year-round in a greenhouse: how would you cool it in the summer?” he says. Still, “Giant pumpkins can pack on 35 pounds a day, and there’s still a ways to go before weigh-in day, so you never know,” says Frerich. And any 2,000-pound pumpkin remains a wonder to behold. “Any time you get a pumpkin that big it’s a good year,” Wallace says. “That’s what I’m going for, and I think I have a shot.” FrerichsFarm.com

Star Light, Star Bright

Exploring the cosmos from one of the smallest spots on the little blue dot By Tony Pacitti

L

ook! Up in the sky! No, really, we’ll wait. What’s up there? Well, in the big, cosmic scheme of things, pretty much everything. That’s a heavy concept to wrap your brain around, especially when you live in a state where anything more than 20 minutes away is considered a “hike.” Once you start measuring things in light years it really gets squirrely, but here’s the trick. The incredible, infinite wonder of the universe isn’t really as far, far away as you’d think.

When they get that view – they’re not ready to process that. Everyone has a different first reaction. - Scott MacNeill

Director of the Frosty Drew Observatory

If you don’t believe us, just ask the stargazers at the Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown’s Ninigret Park. For them, a trip to Saturn is easier than a trip to Warwick. All they need is a clear, dark night and that big, beautiful telescope of theirs. “Every telescope has a strength and this one is fabulous for Saturn,” says observatory director Scott MacNeill. The telescope – a Meade LX200 Schmidt Cassegrain – is great for seeing the equatorial bands on Saturn, which are weather fronts within the planet’s atmosphere, the planet’s moons, and yes, those striking rings are very clearly visible. “It blows their mind. People see pictures on the web and they say, ‘That’s great, that’s Saturn,’ but I don’t think they’re really sure what to expect,” says MacNeill. And it’s true. The best thing about the digital age we live in is that all of the wonders of the world are there for anyone to see, but what they can’t ever prepare you for is what it’s like to see a marvel of the natural world with your own eyes (with a little help of course). “When they get that view – they’re not ready to process that. Everyone has a different first reaction. Some people laugh. Some people swear. Some people cry. I’ve been kissed!” Frosty Drew sits in a wide-open park, surrounded by protected federal lands with nothing beyond but the big, wide Atlantic Ocean. What this means for stargazers is the right kind of darkness, a field of stars relatively unmarred by man-made light. You can even get a look at the Andromeda Galaxy – which will be in prime viewing over Rhode Island in October – with your naked eye. Andromeda, in fact, is the only object outside our own galaxy you can see without the aid of a telescope. Speaking of galaxies, the Milky Way is a photogenic star. Photojournalist Mike Cohea has been capturing the thick band of stars and nebulae – the galactic core – with his camera for over a decade, but in the last year and a half or so has attracted the attention of wide-eyed Rhode Islanders on Instagram – follow him @ mikecohea if you aren’t already and prepare to have your mind blown – with his dazzling shots of our home galaxy captured over Trustom Pond Wildlife Refuge and Block Island. “You don’t just see the Milky Way, but you see all of the planets, satellites, the International Space Station. There are a million other things to see out there,” says Cohea, who grew up an outdoorsy kid in the Pacific Northwest with appreciation for the treasures hiding in plain sight on a clear night. Ten years after moving to and falling in love with Rhode Island, he’s doing his part to share

that wonder of discovery with the rest of us. “This place is really amazing. Everyone goes to the beach during the day then rushes back home, but stay out there. At night it’s a whole other scene.” One scene in particular needs to be seen to be believed – a lovely long exposure of the Milky Way photobombed by a swarm of fireflies, their electric green lights trailing across and dotting the frame. “I’ve never seen so many fireflies. It’s one of those moments where I have to remember that I’m a professional photographer and not [lose it],” he says with a laugh. Capturing these images requires late nights and a lot of patience, meaning a solid afternoon nap and a willingness to stand out in a field for hours in the dead of night, but the results speak for themselves. Cohea also frequently turns his photographer’s eye to our nearest cosmic neighbor, the Moon. In particular, he specializes in time lapses of full moonrises and stunning stills of the moon over southern Rhode Island’s lighthouses and bridges. Using long telephoto lenses creates the optical illusion of the moon appearing larger than it does to the human eye. These shots require precise timing and positioning, often miles away from the earthbound foreground subjects. “I love sharing Rhode Island’s beauty,” says Cohea. “That’s one of the cool things about this. I think that state’s awesome, and it’s a great foreground.” For Cohea, sharing something as big and distant and weird as the Moon or a faraway part of our galaxy in the same image of something as familiar as Beavertail or the Newport Bridge boils down to one thing – communicating to others that it’s all there. If we know where and how to look for it, it’s ours to discover. That same spirit drives the men and women who work at Frosty Drew, Brown University’s Ladd Observatory in Providence, and the Seagrave Memorial Observatory in North Scituate. “We get some little Isaac Newtons,” says MacNeill. “[Kids that] come out and they’re thinking about orbital dynamics, planetary and stellar formation, and they ask questions. We try to tell every kid that’s between five and twenty years old that they’re part of an important generation. The first person to set foot on another planet is walking on Earth right now. They’re a kid, they probably don’t know it’s them, and that opportunity is available to anybody. “When I see these Isaac Newtons walk through the room I sit there and say, ‘This kid could be the one to go to Mars.’ Does he even know he has that chance? Does she even know she’s got that opportunity?”

s one of the original thirteen colonies, Rhode Island is rich with history, and our state is dotted with historical places to tour and explore. Discover the people behind the names familiar from highway and street signs (Gilbert Stuart or Coggeshall, anyone) with first names like Experience, Eleazer, and Silas. Surrounded by the turning leaves of fall, visiting and touring these charming homesteads makes for a good reason to unplug and imagine life during simpler times. But let’s not get too crazy – you’ll want to bring along a charged smartphone or camera to capture these vistas

as each location looks like the October page of a New England calendar. Prior to visiting any of these spots, be sure to browse their websites for details; including accessibility information and hours. While some properties have limited hours and tours or host special events, all offer quintessential views of humble buildings surrounded by pastoral or coastal landscapes, streams, brick walls, and fencing, making for a worthwhile jaunt whether you get to step inside or not. Footwear should be geared toward walking uneven terrain.

ETSEY WILLIAMS: A Great-Great-Great Granddaughter If Betsey’s last name sounds familiar, it’s because her great-great-great grandfather is Roger Williams, the forward-thinking theologian who founded Rhode Island. Built by Nathaniel Williams in 1773, this was the family farmhouse where Betsey and her sister Rhoda grew up, later supplementing their income by weaving cloth in pure cottage-industry style. The last Williams to own the home, Betsey bequeathed it, along with 102 acres of surrounding farmland, to the City of Providence, laying the foundation for Roger Williams Park. For nearly thirty years, this brick-red five-room gambrel-roofed cottage was closed due to structural issues but was restored with funding from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission and the Rhode Island Foundation's Campaign and reopened to the public in August. ILBERT STUART: Presidential Portrait Artist You know that famous portrait of George Washington that’s not finished? Gilbert Stuart painted – or started – it back in 1796! Known as “The Athenaeum Portrait”, that rendering appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for more than a century and on various postage stamps through the years and is Stuart’s most celebrated work. By the end of his career, Stuart had completed more than one thousand portraits of political and social figures but of course the tale turns sad with him leaving his family in debt and being buried in an unmarked grave. But rewind to the early days by visiting the original house where he was born above his father’s snuff mill and resided until age six. This circa 1750 tranquil stream-side property boasts working water wheels and a colonial herb garden, all on a secluded site. Become a member for boat-rental privileges and enjoy rowing along Carr Pond. Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum 815 Gilbert Stuart Road, Saunderstown GilbertStuartMuseum.org

LISHA SMITH: Outlandish Lifestyle John “The Miller” Smith was just that, as well as a map maker and one of Roger Williams’ original band of religious tolerance seekers. Fast-forward to Smith’s grandson Elisha, who was born, came of age, and married Experience Mowry in Providence. Together, the couple moved to “the outlands” now known as Smithfield (named for a London city, not their family) to start a life together. Elisha built a simple, single-room house with a loft in 1696. As time went on and the family grew, additions to the home expanded it to a “country mansion.” Restored and furnished, pay a visit to the buttercup yellow homestead and check out spaces with titles like the buttery, the keeping room, and the smoke room. The rolling acreage also includes outbuildings like the barn (used for seasonal events), a small cemetery, and even a leftover railroad station dating back to 1873, all with an idyllic backdrop of trees and the remaining stone foundations of grist mills.

HE COGGESHALLS: Farmboy Goes to College In the mid- to late-1700s, Wilbur and Eliza Coggeshall established their eponymous tenant farm on a lush patch of land in Bristol. And yes, there’s a Roger Williams connection: both Wilbur and Eliza are descendants of John Coggeshall, who was part of RW’s original group. Their son Chandler traded his farm tools for state politics and helped found the University of Rhode Island, then known as the State Agricultural School. Two centuries after being built, the Coggeshall Farm Museum was established and continues as a working living history farm. Find heritage and heirloom vegetable gardens, a tool shed/blacksmith shop, hay barn with animals, a garden meadow, and of course, a farmhouse on-site. The museum prides itself on offering a peek of what farm life was like into the eighteenth century with demonstrations in hearth cooking, hand-sewing, and spinning. ORE FARMS, A HOUSE, AND A TAVERN

Richard Clemence: Wicked Old House The Clemence-Irons House is one of the oldest houses in Rhode Island. Built by Richard Clemence in 1691, it is an example of a stone-ender, a once common building type with roots in western England. The Clemence-Irons House 38 George Waterman Road, Johnston Eleazer Arnold: Wicked Old Bar In the early 1700s, Great Road was the only traveled road between Providence and the expanding outlands (see, we’re already using that word, Elisha). Sounds like the perfect spot for a tavern, thought man-about-town Eleazor Arnold, and in 1710 he was granted license for a “Publick House.” Arnold House 487 Great Road, Lincoln When Silas Met Abigail When Abigail Coggeshall married Silas Casey, her dad’s property became known as Casey Farm. With access to Newport and imported goods, life was fashionable on the farm, which has remained in the family ever since. Casey Farm 2325 Boston Neck Road, Saunderstown Job Watson: Bay View Ever since Job Watson purchased this patch of land in 1789, five successive generations over two centuries of Watsons have cultivated it using innovative sustainable practices. Vistas of sheep and Heritage Red Devon cattle beneath the Jamestown Bridge is a scene not to be missed. Watson Farm 455 North Road, Jamestown NOTE: This brief list only scratches the colonial surface of Rhode Island’s rich cultural heritage. Find Hard-Pressed Cider Company – and their delicious donuts – at Windmist Farm this season

HOW ABOUT THEM APPLES?

New England’s staple fruit gets the squeeze at Hard-Pressed Cider Company The Hard-Pressed Cider Company specializes in two things: apple cider and cider donuts. Nothing could be more autumnal, or New England, than that pairing, but founder Robert Swanson never expected to start a business. During his college years in the early 2000s, Swanson was messing around with an apple press. One jug led to another, and soon he was setting up shop in a mobile trailer. Like a cool weather lemonade stand, Hard-Pressed serves fresh-pressed refreshments from a service window, and lines can get long. The tiny operation has won major acclaim, especially in the wake of HeyRhody.com

its first donut experiment in 2015. Part of Swanson’s success comes from his all-natural approach; the only ingredient in his cider is apples, sourced from local farms. (Connoisseurs may notice the flavor of the ciders change from week to week, since Swanson uses a range of apple varieties). The donuts are sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, a welcome blend on a crisp fall afternoon. TAKE YOUR PICK

The tastiest apple is the one you pick yourself at these open-source orchards By Robert Isenberg

There’s a lot to be said for supporting your local farm. But apple-picking is also a timeless delight, a chance for families to spend afternoons outside, plucking the very fruit on which they will eventually munch. Rural Rhode Island is packed with farms, and orchards explode with fruit throughout September and October. If you don’t know the difference between a Golden Delicious and a Granny Smith, farmers are only too happy to describe their distinctions, as well as the scores of other varieties that grow in these parts. Note: Many orchards are only open on weekends or have irregular schedules, so it’s wise to call ahead.

LAST LOOK

THE GREAT PUMPKINS

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular celebrates 30 years of insanely detailed pumpkin carving When something happens often enough you start to take it for granted. It’s expected, it’s been done; same thing, different day. Yet even after 30 years, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo never fails to impress. The crew at Passion for Pumpkins will start crafting the larger, more intricate pumpkins in September in preparation for the month-long pumpkin patch that winds through the zoo from October 4-November 4. Given the sense of wonder the display stirs in visitors, it’s only fitting that this

year’s theme is “Magic.” Maybe it’s the intricate detail work and painstaking craftsmanship that goes into each pumpkin, whether it bares a scene from a famous film, the face of a beloved personality, or an exotic wild animal. Maybe it’s the pumpkins themselves, totaling in the thousands with the biggest of the bunch almost the size of a Smart car. Say what you want about routine and habit, but this is one Rhode Island tradition that never gets old. Providence, RWPZoo.com –Tony Pacitti
