THE EDITOR Catholic Schools Week Mass at 11:30 am

I consider the end of Daylight Savings Time my favorite holiday. Yup, that debated event in early November when we set our clocks back one hour. (Is there any gift more glorious than 60 minutes?) Days are bright and by dusk every window emits a cozy glow. The air is brisk and the night sky is clear and sparkles with stars. The stage is now set for holiday season in Rhode Island! All over the state, small businesses and organizations are in celebration mode – not in a raucous summer way – but festive, cheerful, and communal. Crafters have made things all year long in prep for winter markets, festooned shops are stocked with unique things, and restaurants and cafes have added comfort food and specialty drinks to their menus. Whether you consider yourself a Grinch or Buddy the Elf, you can’t help but feel and embrace this vibe of anticipation and excitement. Since everyone already has so much to do, we’ve combed the state (and social media) for every event we could find and compiled it into a singular go-to resource. We call it “The Nice List”, and it’s been a real treat for us to play Santa putting it all together. From November through New Year’s, divided by region and topic for ease-of-use, you’ll find everything from Christmas tree and menorah lightings, to where to find Santa, holiday strolls, festivals, and so much more. In Hey Rhody HOLIDAY we also crack the code on what you might find on an Italian cookie tray or Feast of the Seven

Smart Cookies Ellie’s Bakery brings back its gingerbread kits to raise funds for families in need Okay, so you had us at “gingerbread kit.” One of the great winter pastimes is baking those golden-brown cookies and decorating them with frosting and candies. Now, imagine gingerbread figurines created by Ellie’s Bakery, the renowned patisserie in downtown Providence. For several years, Ellie’s has created prim little boxes with high-quality cookies and brightly colored confections. The family-friendly joys alone would be worth the $8. But these kits also serve a good cause: 100 percent of the proceeds benefit Rhode Island families in need. In previous years, Ellie’s has sold more than 3,000 kits, making lots of customers – and under-employed households – full of holiday cheer. You can find the kits at both Ellie’s Bakery and its sister-restaurant, Gracie’s Providence. The kits are also available at Miriam Hospital, where they can double as a get-well gift. Doing good never tasted so sweet. Providence, ElliesProv.com -Robert Isenberg Photo courtesy of Ellie’s Bakery

here are few things more satisfying than working with your hands to create something beautiful, especially around the holidays,” says Julie Christina, education programs manager at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum in Bristol. Julie, who grew up making wreaths, muses that preparation is half of the fun. “Leading up to the holidays, we teach simple techniques at Blithewold that can be used year after year to create timeless natural wreaths, swags, garlands, or arrangements that are so much more meaningful when you’ve made them yourself.” Plus, adds Julie, “the smell of fresh evergreens in your home is the true reward!”

While some people do not like the ‘mess’ associated with fresh holiday décor, rest assured that these elements are eco-friendly and ultimately leave less mess in the long run than something bought and made of plastic.

Bundle

PRE P A wire wreath frame was used for this project, but most any round form can do. Some ideas: a grapevine wreath, a large embroidery hoop, a bicycle wheel, or bend a circle from a thick wire hanger.

GATHER • Berries • Branches of cedar, evergreen, fir, pine • Pinecones

C RE AT E 1 . Clear an indoor surface for messy work or take this project outside. 2 . Begin by wiring items together in small bundles: short branches (6-8 inches long, depending on the size of your wreath frame); clusters of stemmed cones; sprigs of berries.

Begin

3. Work to conceal the wreath frame by placing bundles of greens at a slight diagonal and wrapping wires toward the base to secure (wrapping at least twice). Layer bundles in the same direction, always covering ends with the next bundle on top. Keep adding greens until you have the look you wish – simple or full. After you’ve gone around, tuck your last bundle under the first.

• Scissors or wire clippers • Wire • Wreath frame

4.

Adorn the greens by placing pre-wired cones and berries onto the wreath; secure in place by tucking and adding more wire if needed. Shape and fluff to conceal wire.

5. Attach wire to hang and enjoy!

How You Can Help: Participate in events like interview prep day, care package assembly, financial aid projects, and application day parties. Providence, CollegeVisions.org. Domestic & Sexual Abuse Prevention and Education The Sojourner House has an overarching mission: to ensure that one day, we live in a world without domestic or sexual abuse. The program seeks to help victims of sexual and domestic victims with educational programs, HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, youth advocacy, a drop-in center, an abuse hotline, support groups, and more. t’s no secret that around the holidays we can get consumed by, well,

consumerism. And how can we not? Black Friday, doorbuster deals, the cyber Monday click-and-save bonanzas – but the holiday season is also a time for doing good, reaching out, and pitching in to help those in need. Whether it’s volunteering for your neighborhood soup kitchen or donating to your favorite local charity, it’s always a good idea to pay it forward. Here are six examples of Rhode Island-based nonprofits you can show some love to in the coming months.

Animal Shelters & Sanctuaries Let’s not forget our furry and feathered friends. West Place Animal Sanctuary in Tiverton is a safe haven for injured wild animals of many kinds. Founder Wendy Taylor takes in fowl (ducks, turkeys, and geese, oh my!), alpacas, horses, pigs, goats, lost dogs, and others for shelter and rehabilitation. How You Can Help: Volunteer at the farm by walking dogs, feeding the animals, and pruning the gardens, or donate on their website. Tiverton, WestPlace.org. Military Family & Veteran Support Services The holidays can be especially hard for military and law enforcement families whose members are overseas or were

lost in service. What’s more, some of these families struggle to pay their living expenses and cannot afford presents for their children. That’s why the James D. Reilly Foundation made it its mission to bring a magical holiday experience to those in need. Donations to the organization will help fund a myriad of things, from toys for kid’s “wish lists” to a mortgage or accessible vehicle. How You Can Help: Donate online, request a visit from Santa, or volunteer. Bristol, JDRFoundation.org. Homeless Shelters & Services Eighteen thousand meals served in its soup kitchen annually, 225 unique individuals housed in a year, and 80 children and adults helped daily. These are the impressive differences the Welcome House of South County has made in its community. Located in Peace Dale, the emergency shelter program seeks to equip its guests with the financial knowledge and skills to live an independent, comfortable life. The Welcome House also has a oneyear transitional housing onsite for a select number of individuals. How You Can Help: Volunteer in their soup kitchen or shelter, donate food, or give money to help this holiday season. Peace Dale, WelcomeHouseOfSouthCounty.org. Food Banks No one should have to choose between paying the rent and eating. Project Hand Up/Be The Change is a volunteer and food donations-based group where people can take home groceries for the week in exchange for a small monetary donation. The organization also collects school supplies for students in need at the beginning of the academic year, and hosts a “Stuff the Bus With Food” event for families and the elderly trying to make ends meet. How You Can Help: Donate food and supplies or make a monetary donation online. West Warwick, BTCSundayMeal.com.

lanning to see a play this December? Bring tissues. By the time Ebenezer Scrooge learns the error of his ways – and runs excitedly through the streets, making amends with every Londoner he ever snubbed – the tears will roll. When George seizes his second chance, divinely reminded that he’s actually lived a wonderful life, most of us will be bawling. Even the Sugarplum Fairies can moisten eyes with their balletic beauty.

The holiday season is a busy time for Rhode Island theater companies, and you have your pick of spirit-lifting classics. Whether you prefer Tiny Tim or the Mouse King, there are plenty of versions to catch. If you decide to support local companies, you have plenty of opportunities to mouth the words, “God bless us, every one!” Here are some highlights from the classic canon.

Winter Wonderland Four Rhode Island photographers share what makes this season the most wonderful time of year

@silentjosh37

JOSH D. Winters in Rhode Island bring on a quiet calm as the pace of everything tends to slow down a bit. If you have the chance, and a warm coat, make sure to get out for sunset at India Point Park. The sun hits just right and creates some amazing reflections off the water. Not to be missed, especially after a snowstorm!

SARA HARRISON The holidays in Rhode Island can be like living in a Hallmark movie. From festive events, visits to a local tree farm, to the lights and decorations adorning homes, boats, streets, and even lobster traps, it’s my absolute favorite time of year in Rhody!

@barb1962

BARBARA MCCORMICK One of the best parts about winter is the solitude. The quiet. The chance to really explore the shore and find remnants of sea life, and things left behind from a summer’s day that finally washes ashore. It’s a great time to clean up. I have a running hashtag called #HelpCleanRhodyBeaches that highlight everything I collect off the beaches.

In memory of sweet Finn. You were Barbara's best friend, adventure buddy, and faithful shadow. Rest in peace.

“Another reason why I love winter is that dogs are allowed on the beach again. I take my yellow lab, Finn, with me most trips, and she explores right along with me!”

@volantys

SCOTT FRIEDMAN Having the ocean at our doorstep and having it as a background for holiday lights and Christmas trees is uniquely Rhody. My ‘must-go-to shots’ during the holiday season would be the Newport Bridge from the Jamestown harbor side, any nautical themed holiday lights or Christmas tree displays on or near the water, the elusive lobster trap Christmas ‘trees’, and the decorated lighthouse at Gurney’s on Goat Island.

Happy Challah-Days! Celebrate Hanukkah with your favorite bread Golden-brown, shiny crust, doughy, rich texture, and that slightly-sweet taste. These are the delights of fresh challah bread. The word “challah” has become synonymous with the egg-based braided baked good, but really the term in Hebrew is used to refer to any bread served during a religious Jewish ritual. At Rebelle Artisan Bagels, you can find challah baked with customized intricate designs. Owner Milena Pagan says that many of her regular customers were asking if she could make the bread for Rosh Hashanah. So, she and her production manager took a special trip to London to learn how to make it from a challah specialist, who even shared her own recipe, which the two have brought back to Rhode Island. Says Milena, “We are super excited to bring something different to our local community!” Don’t live on the East Side of Providence? Challah is also available at all New Harvest Bread Co. in North Kingstown, Rainbow Bakery in Cranston, and Seven Stars Bakery locations. What’s red and green and minty all over? Our festive spin on the classic cocktail! by Elyse Major • photography by Nick DelGiudice

E N T E R TA I N I N G

C

ould your holiday hosting use a little glitz? Put the cider and eggnog mugs away for a night and pull out all the stops – and martini glasses – for cocktail time! Our mix masters have developed the perfect recipe for hosting a wintertime soiree. It makes use of local ingredients from candy to liquor, and with our simple step-by-step instructions, you’ll be shaking things up like a pro. Skip the alcohol for an all ages mocktail.

Cos-mint-politan • 2 oz Rhode Island Spirits Rhodium vodka • ½ oz Shrub Organic Cranberry Mint Cocktail Mixer & Drinking Vinegar • ¾ oz triplesec • Unsweetened cranberry juice • A whole fresh lime • A few fresh cranberries • Crushed Sweenor’s peppermint candy (for rim) • Ice (large cubes preferred)

1. Knead a whole lime between your hands gently and then cut in half horizontally. Cut a wheel garnish from one half and set the other half aside for squeezing later.

2. Using the remainder of the garnish half of the lime, wet the rim of your martini glass, and apply the crushed peppermint candy.

3. Combine the Rhodium vodka, Shrub mixer, triplesec, and a few splashes of unsweetened cranberry juice in a shaker. Squeeze in prepared lime half and add ice.

4. Shake vigorously until cold and strain into glass. 5. Garnish with the lime wheel and a few fresh cranberries.

hen a cookie can trigger a happy memory, that’s a validation!” says Maria Bedrosian, and she knows from experience. Her mother Ann Louise Ronci founded Only the Finest Italian Cookies, a thriving business centered around a profound love of creating Italian cookie trays. “My mother always felt that a cookie was so personal and homey,” says Maria. When her mother unexpectedly passed in 2017, Maria couldn’t let all of the orders go unfilled, and, despite a full-time job, stepped up to the plate to honor her mother and got busy. While some bakeries offer Italian cookie trays of six or 12 varieties, Only the Finest makes 25 types of cookies from just as many types of dough. “It’s not just one dough for all the cookies in different shapes. We can do this because it’s all we do,” explains Maria, who likes to make each cookie small “so that guests can enjoy more than one!” Only the Finest isn’t your ordinary bake shop. It’s an on-demand, online-based business in North Providence, led by Maria and a trusty team of family and friends. “We don’t skimp. There’s lots of butter, fruit, nuts, chocolate, anise,” says Maria, who notes that Christmas is their busiest time of year. “The nice thing about the cookie tray is that there’s something for everyone, even a couple that are gluten-free.” OnlyTheFinestItalianCookies.com

HOW THE COOKIES CRUMBLE If you live in Rhode Island, chances are good that you’ve experienced the delights of an Italian cookie tray: assorted treats in different shapes and sizes, some filled, some dipped, some sandwiched and others with nuts, all piled prettily on a round disk and presented like a gift – wrapped in cellophane and tied with a bow. And just like a sampler box of chocolates, you may have wondered about what you were going to get. Maria Bedrosian of Only the Finest Italian Cookies helps us crack the cookie code!

f you love seafood, La Vigilia is the best possible holiday: a feast, showcasing the bounty of the sea, followed immediately by Christmas. Purists could go on and on about the symbolism of the event – the biblical number, the Catholic abstention from “meat” before a holiday – but in the end, the Feast of the Seven Fishes is a delicious maritime meal shared with family during the most sentimental season of the year. The Italian tradition is well-known in Rhode Island, whether your family hails from Naples or not. And because we’re the Ocean State, many Rhodies are all too willing to celebrate Christmas Eve with lemongarlic shrimp, mussels with tomato, and fillets of salted cod. Cooking so many dishes may sound daunting, which is one reason several local restaurants host their own versions of the feast. This is by no means an exhaustive list of restaurants serving La Vigilia meals, and some Seven Fishes mainstays, like Roma and Spirito’s, hadn’t finalized their schedules at press time. But if you’re looking for a venue to celebrate outside your home – or you want to try the seasonal cuisine for the first time – these are some primo places to start.

ngela Zampell grew up crafting ornaments with her mom and sisters. Tom Butts helped his grandparents tinker with their miniature Christmas village. When Angela met Tom, it was a match made it kitsch heaven. Together with their two pups Bridgette and Gidget, the couple pulls out all the stops – along with stacks of bins – to prepare their East Providence home for the holidays. “A double parlor with an adjacent den allows our Christmas decor to flow like an endless sea of glitter and cheer,” muses

Angela. “When Tom and I start decorating for Christmas, we put away our regular home decor so that every nook has a new look,” explains Angela, who makes new pillows, drapes, and other decor to transform their abode. The couple revels in unpacking their collected stash over mugs of cocoa, with holiday movies playing in the background. “We like making vignettes of characters that include new, vintage, and retro trees, deer, and the sweetest faced Made in Japan elves and

When the couple met, they were delighted to learn that they both shared a love for Christmas and holiday decorations – integral parts of both of their upbringings with fond memories attached. Tom is a tattoo artist, and Angela is a fashion designer and crafter. “Making cute things and using creativity was a huge part of childhood,” says Angela, who credits her mother with instilling a trust in her daughter’s sense of style and talent. Angela founded and operates the retro-inspired clothing line Modd Merr, and also creates and sells mini dioramas made

with recycled tin under the name Hot Glue Heroes. Her wee vignettes are filled with vintage figurines, retro trim, ephemera, and lots of glitter. “My craft line combines three of my favorite things: crafting, cute figurines, and holiday ornaments.” Inspired by his grandparents’ Christmas village, Tom designed and built a custom four-level display for the couple’s own mini wonderland scene. The showcase includes a carved winter landscape with snowy banks and mountain ranges –

Tom is also in charge of the interior and exterior illumination, which we all know from Clark Griswold can be a vast undertaking. “Together we work like a team of elves staging every corner of our home, hanging hundreds of ornaments,

We hear families walking by commenting on our yard or glimpsing at our windows.” Angela notes that they use LED lights whenever possible “so as not to short circuit the neighborhood.” Even long after the decorations are tucked away, the couple is drawn to bright colors and graphic elements. “Our style can be described as eclectic, retro, nostalgic, and cozy, and we love technicolor!” says Angela, who likes to accent bold hues with graphic elements such as animal prints and traditional tattoo art inked by Tom and friends. The couple also likes streamlined furnishings from the Mid Century/Atomic Age, citing Hayward Wakefield pieces as a favorite. Says Angela, “We love treasures from the 1940s through the 1980s, the decade of our childhoods. Of course, the latest holiday fads catch our eye as well.” When they’re not busy making their mark, making art, or festooning their digs, they’re co-hosting The Craft and Kitsch Winter Market, held December 7 and 8 this year at the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative. Off The Cuff Jamestown jewelry maker commemorates 2019 in sterling silver New Year’s Eve can mean many things, from a symbolic fresh start (cue those resolutions!) to an excuse to party the night away. But as the countdown to midnight starts, champagne glasses poised and breath bated, there’s always a moment when you find yourself looking back on the last 365 days – and perhaps wishing to hold onto them for a little longer. This is the concept behind Jamestown jewelry maker Didi Suydam’s MAXIMA Cuff. The design is simple: a sterling silver cuff with a satin finish, the year 2019 written in Roman numerals MMXIX. The idea originated as graduation gifts for Didi’s daughters; she made each by hand, soldering the numerals onto the bars to form a cuff. Then, Didi thought, “Why couldn’t this be a way to commemorate any important year in someone’s life?” Find the MAXIMA Cuff ($295) at Didi Suydam Contemporary at Shop.DidiSuydam.com. -Megan Schmit

ulling out bins and boxes of ornaments each year is a treat similar to rifling through a box of photos, each connecting to a special memory, person, place. Around the state, makers and sellers are stocking their shelves with ornaments so fun and quirky they’re just as much a souvenir as a Christmas decoration. Consider adding any of these to your collection or gifting to someone who adores the state as much as you do!

I

have to confess that more than once I have found myself wandering the aisles of the local drugstore this time of year, contemplating a Chia Pet or some other As Seen On TV gadget as a potential holiday gift. To save you from any similar lastminute, panic-driven decisions (‘Tis the season for overwhelm!), I’ve put together a list of experiences and simple luxuries from around the state that are sure to add some merry to the season and put smiles on the faces of the loved ones on your list.

Saltitude

Culture Club For around $60, you can give the art lover in your life a yearlong admission to the RISD Museum. Recipients get a laminated card in the mail, which I love because it feels old school and sorta secret club-ish. They also get a 10 percent discount at Cafe Pearl and a heads up (before the general public) about upcoming special events via regular emails. A few years ago, as part of my membership, I was able to buy VIP tickets to a private Todd Oldham-led tour of his retrospective All of Everything and it was magical! For a list of museums around the state, go to Things to Do > Art & Culture Museums, at VisitRhodeIsland.com.

Dinner is Served Cooking’s great and all, but I don’t love it. And I know plenty of other people who feel the same. Enter Feast & Fettle, the Rhode Island based meal prep and delivery service. Feast prides itself on using the best quality ingredients (locally sourced whenever possible) and is the closest you can get to homemade without actually rolling up your sleeves and (if you’re anything like me) making a huge mess. Food is delivered in a temp controlled bag, so all you have to do is heat and serve! They offer plans for singles, couples, and families. Also check out Bites by Bre, The Holistic Trick, Good4U, Minymeals, and Savory Fare.

Present Pose Get your significant other, mom, dad, bro, or sis on the mat for some zen (more stretching, less stressing) courtesy of a class card from Essence Yoga in Pawtuxet Village. At 10 classes for only $100 (That’s $10 a class!), they can dip their toe into a variety of options that are ideal for newbies as well as those returning to practice after some time away. Chances are your local studio offers a similar dealio!

Unsure what to get that thrill-seeking friend or family member? Flying lessons might be just the ticket. One of my besties from college who’s also penguin plunged and bungee jumped gifted herself lessons from Horizon Aviation, Inc. last year and adored her time in the air. Other schools in the area include Newport Aviation, North Central Flight Center, and Air Ventures Flying School, both in Smithfield. Who knows, your BFF could wind up earning their pilot’s license and flying you down to Florida for February vacay next winter!

BRAMWELL TOVEY, ARTISTIC ADVISOR

Say Cheese We all have that one friend or relative who’s using a selfie (taken with an old iPhone) or outdated picture of themselves for either their website, LinkedIn profile, or both. I can’t think of a better gift for them than a mini headshot session with a local photographer. There are so many talented professional photogs around Rhode Island (In the past, my go-to’s have included Stacey Doyle and Trisha Kelley) who regularly offer these types of abbreviated shoots for business execs, actors, bloggers, and so on at a lower rate than their regular one.

Spa-ventures Put a new twist on the traditional spa day! Gift your favorite person some time to recharge and refresh with a salt cave (also called halo therapy) or infrared sauna session. Both treatments are said to help promote things we all want more of in our everyday lives like better, more restful sleep and an overall sense of calm and relaxation. When it comes to salt therapy, I adore Saltitude in Lincoln, where a seat for 45 minutes of meditative bliss is around $45. (They’ve also started offering a limited number of private massages – including one for couples – in the cave!) As for infrared, I like The Preserve in Middletown, where a 30 minute sauna for one person is priced at $29.

es, it’s convenient to use an Amazon Wish List. Scroll, scroll, click, click – a half-hour later, all your holiday shopping is done. But there’s nothing exciting about it. Online shopping feels like a chore, like paying your electric bill. Loved ones open their pre-wrapped bags and boxes, and you wonder what you even ordered for them. The opposite? Browsing the displays of a holiday art market, where local artists and crafters show their wares. Instead of algorithms, you’ll find ceramics, paintings, kitchen implements, and tableware that you have never seen before – because it was physically created by the person in front of you. Art markets gather creatives from across the region, some of whom may even be your neighbors.

Expelled soot from a furnace or boiler malfunction can cover walls, ceilings, cabinets, carpets, furniture, bedding, drapes and everything else in your home with a thin, oily film. DIY attempts to wash away soot with typical cleaning supplies often end up in disaster. Soot cleanup requires the expertise of a professional company like Single Source. We use special techniques and materials to thoroughly clean and deodorize all affected items and surfaces—getting you back to normal FAST.
