Retro furniture gets a second – and stunning – life at Uniquely Chic Vintage Briel Delmonaco has a knack for bringing vintage furniture back to life… or turning it into something new altogether. Just ask high-profile brands like Louis Vuitton, Glade, and Nickelodeon, or the customers from as far as Japan who ordered more than 180 pieces of custom furniture last year from her Lincoln-based vintage restoration and customization shop, Uniquely Chic Vintage. “It’s a very detailed process,” says Delmonaco, who personally has a hand in every restoration and order. Blithewold’s 33 acre estate features eight different gardens to explore, each with their own display of remarkable flowers and vegetation. Take a stroll through the water garden, featuring a water lily pond, Japanese maple plantings, and a stone arched bridge, or visit the rock garden, where a raised area of rock is adorned with smaller plants and different species of trees. There’s even a vegetable garden and a majestic bamboo grove to explore. Bristol, Blithwold.org
The Rough Point Garden Tour takes visitors through the two exquisite gardens on the estate: the kitchen garden, where the vegetation grown is based on historical plant lists and recipes from the 1900s and shared with local food banks; and the formal garden, where 35 different varieties of gorgeous dahlias are grown and the rose arbor with its spectacular American Pillar Rose is displayed. HOMES ON HIGH The housing market in Rhode Island had a record-breaking year in 2017, and all signs point to a strong market this year. “Changes to the tax code, rising interest rates, and lack of adequate supply could cause the market to moderate in 2018 – which wouldn’t be a bad thing,” says Joseph Luca, president of the RI Association of Realtors. Nothing says traditional New England like the Windsor chair. With its back of rounded spindles, these chairs look like wagon wheels with armrests. O&G Studio creates its Windsor chairs with an almost Shaker simplicity, along with tables, stools, and settees. The muted colors and old-school designs make them perfect for a cottage by the sea, but even if your house doesn’t have its own parlor and widow’s walk, you can contract the O&G staff for custom designs in any variety of interiors. The Warren-based studio is best known for its seating, but they offer lighting and mirrors as well, all which you can see in their new Barrington showroom. A favorite accoutrement: the Tiverton and Point Judith Lamps, fashioned from brass, covered in cognac leather, and topped with round linen shades. If Ishmael had ever needed to upgrade his fittings, he’d almost certainly have started here. 40 Maple Avenue, Barrington. OAndGStudio.com
Ball and Claw They say that cabinetry is the hardest kind of furniture you can make. Jeffrey Greene takes that challenge one step further – by building bureaus and chests in the ornate style of the 18th century. In colonial times, Greene’s highboys might have contained shifts and tuckers, and his desks – with their flowery handles and flip-open tops – are the kind that Thomas Jefferson would have used to draft his letters. Greene employs age-old techniques to handcraft his pieces, including dining tables and grandfather clocks, and the replicas are so convincing that even experts have mistaken them for originals. That dedication to craftsmanship, can be seen inGreene’s book, American Furniture of the 18th Century – which is an opus unto itself – or by visiting his Newport showroom. 29 America’s Cup Avenue, Newport. Sakonnet Furniture Makers The Sakonnet style is hard to pin down: the lines are sharp, the surfaces smooth, and every piece has been sanded and stained to perfection. Yet the wood’s natural texture features prominently, and you may see every ripple and ring from the original tree. Stephen Kinnane is a relatively new addition to Rhode Island’s custom furniture scene, having established Sakonnet in 2010, but his training is prestigious: Kinnane studied woodworking at the Bennett Street School of Traditional Craft in Boston. Many of his pieces have a modernist appearance, designed for specific living spaces, and he draws all of his designs by hand. Kinnane also runs The Sakonnet Collective Gallery with Padraic Manning, showcasing the work of fellow crafters – just another reason to spend some time in Tiverton Four Corners. 3842 Main Road, Tiverton. ASK THE EXPERT : LANDSCAPING Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services has a 60 yard blower truck that can lay down mulch in less than an hour
Mulch Ma de Easy
Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services installs mulch in an innovative and efficient way Alicia and Nick Donadio have a unique business: their Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Services blows mulch into garden beds, saving homeowners and landscapers countless hours of work. In fact, they’re the only operation in the state that has a 60 yard Express Blower Truck. We recently caught up with Alicia to learn more about their innovative mulch service.
TOM WEGNER How did you get involved in the mulch installation business? My husband Nick and I had been in the landscape industry for over 20 years, and saw the need for a faster, more efficient way to install massive amounts of mulch in the short spring window. Now we help landscapers and contractors get those residential and commercial mulch jobs done in time for the season. We like to say that we’re in the “landscape support business.”
What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We have all kinds of mulches: brown, black, pine, cedar, and more. Many are all-natural, some are color enhanced or organically enhanced. Our other services include Soil and Compost applications, Terraseeding, Certified Playground Chip installations and Erosion Controls like Silt Sock.
How does blown-in mulch work? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. When the truck arrives at the property, long hoses are pulled from the truck around the property to install the mulch directly into the beds at the depth the customer requests. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. Normally, the process involves bringing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow over to the beds one at a time. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work. Our process is significantly faster and more convenient.
When is the best time to install mulch? Spring for sure. Mulch is not only a fast way to make your property look its best, it’s also very beneficial to your soil and plants. It helps suppress weeds, retains moisture, adds nutrients, and moderates soil temperature.
What types of properties do you service? Can you do small properties? If mulch needs to be installed, we can do it! We service both commercial and residential properties throughout Rhode Island. And yes, we can install our products on smaller properties with a 10 yard minimum.
What do you say to skeptics? We have always told potential customers, “Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year.” Once they see us pull that off fast and efficiently, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.
How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? Well, every property is unique; it really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour.

THE PLUSH LIFE
Artfully designed home accents add a pop of traditional New England color Inspiration comes naturally to Rumford-based designer Asher Dunn, the force behind DUNN, an award-winning design and manufacturing firm that has always been drawn to nature. “There are so many beautiful areas to explore in New England,” says Dunn. “I felt challenged by the idea of using textiles and color to convey my memories of a place.” The tone palettes of his American Heritage Pillows reflect the vivid colors found throughout the local landscape of our coasts, harbors, and woodlands. “Landscapes and seascapes inspired my design, so I wanted to bring in as much natural texture and pattern as possible,” says Dunn. The pillows, which come in three styles and two sizes, are a sleekly-designed way to bring the outdoors in. -Kim Tingle

Semia Dunne has turned a lifelong passion into two successful floral businesses
F
rom her Providence studio, Flowers by Semia, Semia Dunne has earned acclaim as a master of beautiful floral arrangements. It’s a reputation that has blossomed from a passion that took root as a teenager. “I grew up on a little plot of land where we did our own farming. I started a cut flower garden with my mother when I was 17 – and I got bit by the bug,” she explains. A part-time job at a flower shop while figuring out her post-graduate life sealed the deal, and Dunne hasn’t looked back since.

Understanding your child is our priority. At Rectory, we emphasize the personalized approach, where we measure success by the improvement realized by each individual student.
SUMMER@RECTORY July 1–27, 2018 | www.rectoryschool.org/summer In recent years, as the farm-to-table movement bloomed among food purveyors and consumers in Rhode Island, Dunne recognized that the same philosophy could be applied to flowers. So late last year she launched The Floral Reserve, a wholesale shop next to the studio, where floral designers can browse a selection provided by local farmers – including many grown on her own farm in Lincoln – as well as imported Dutch flowers. During certain hours, The Floral Reserve opens its doors to the general public, giving everyone an opportunity to discover the bounty of area flower farmers. Which is good news for someone looking to add a little pop to their home or work space. “Living things – whether it’s a plant or a fresh floral arrangement – elevate our mood. Color is very powerful. Plants or flowers in the workplace and home [are] like therapy.” For years, Flowers by Semia has offered workshops and instruction, and Dunne plans to continue that tradition at The Floral Reserve by bringing in guest designers. “We teach at so many levels, from expert to the absolute beginner,” says Dunne. “No one should be intimidated to come to a class or come to the Reserve to take in all the natural beauty that’s all around us.” Open to the public Fridays 12-2; Saturdays 8-2. eff Sweenor is used to making people’s dreams come true. The owner of Sweenor Builders has been creating custom homes throughout Rhode Island for nearly 30 years. But when This Old House selected his South County-based business to build their prestigious 2017 Idea House in East Matunuck, it was his turn to live out a dream. “It was thrilling to work with the This Old House team to build a unique home that celebrates the best of coastal living,” says Sweenor. The details throughout the Idea House are nothing short of breaktaking. The Shingle-style house, a quintessential New England design that dates back to the 19th century, features traditional elements like wood shingle siding, a gambrel roof, curved walls, and a massive wrap-around porch. The beach house theme seamlessly blends an easy living layout with an elegant aesthetic, and classic architecture with ultra modern elements. With a focus on aging in place and

accommodating multi-generational families – two of the most desireable design-build trends – the entire house offers meticulous details at every corner. The first floor features a gourmet kitchen complete with a wet bar and a center island, and beautifully flows into the gorgeous living room. The open floor plan, created for both everyday comfort and entertaining, offers easy access throughout both areas. Vaulted ceilings, built-in cabinets, and the creative use of wall coverings offer each room its own sense of place and function. The spacious master bedroom and bathroom are also found on the first floor. Two additional bedrooms are on the second floor, a thoughtful open-air space with a separate laundry that offers privacy and luxe comfort. The whimsical third floor, the aptly called bunk room, features built-in bunk beds that are ideal for younger visitors.
Unique and custom details can be found throughout the 3,200 square foot home: a bonus room built over the garage and designed as a game room; a mudroom with a dog-washing station that can double as a utility sink; a backyard deck off the kitchen that leads to a patio with a built-in fire pit; an outdoor shower; and a show-stopping multi-season room with a stunning gas fireplace. The entire house is also a modern model for smart living: lighting, individual room temperature, and alarm systems are controlled wirelessly via mobile apps. In taking this build from concept to completion, Sweenor Builders has created the ultimate South County dream home, combining the latest trends with classic New England style. Inspiration can be fleeting, but the lucky owners that now call this house home are sure to find it in every room.

About The Idea House This Old House, the famed television program and magazine, began the Idea House series in 2015. Built from the ground up, the Idea House is a high concept home that integrates traditional and regional design-build elements with modern day sensibilities. The first Idea House in Rhode Island, last year’s eight month long Beach House project, was a creative collaboration between Wakefield-based Sweenor Builders, Providence-based Union Studio Architecture & Community Design, and several This Old House sponsors and contributors. This Old House recently announced the next collaboration with Sweenor Builders: the 2018 Idea House, a Narragansett build less than a mile from the beach. “Our firm is deeply vested in creating vibrant village neighborhoods in South County,” says Sweenor. “These collaborations with This Old House are truly special projects for us and our communities.”

im Schatz and Peter Souza are the creative minds behind J. Schatz, a line of minimalist design-forward home goods sold in 14 countries worldwide, created from their live/work space in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood. When they decided to leave LA and reconnect to their East Coast roots, the couple shopped around five New England towns and ultimately found the Weybossett Dye House while visiting Rhode Island. “This building is so magnificent that once we knew we could afford to buy it, it was a no brainer,” Schatz says. “It’s a gorgeous, iconic building. It fit perfectly for our needs. We knew we could integrate our house and our workspace.”

The couple set about transforming the 5,200-square-foot space into a working studio, a showroom and living quarters, as well as two small guest apartments for visitors. With 20-foot ceilings and plenty of light coming through the high windows, the building has become a beautiful, modern, airy-feeling space while still retaining its rustic old mill charm through touches like original wooden support beams and painted brick walls. “Providence was on the top of [our] list, even without this building, because of the creative culture and being close to the water,” Schatz says. “It’s like SoHo in the ‘80s,” Souza adds. “There are artists all around us.”
Satisfaction, guaranteed.
I
n the early 2000s in upstate New York, Schatz decided he was unhappy with the lackluster wooden bird feeder he had hanging outside his window. He decided the birds deserved something much nicer, and set about learning ceramics by teaching himself and working with local artisans. His final design, the Egg Bird Feeder, was one of Fortune’s 25 Best Products of 2004. He went on to experiment with new shapes, functionalities and techniques – a hobby which grew into J. Schatz, a ceramics company making houses and feeders for many different bird species as well as lighting lines, table and kitchenware, and more. Schatz describes his aesthetic as “brutalist, yet elegant” and his lines as “small, beautiful, detailed products you can’t find anywhere else.” Some pieces are made freehand, like the Brutal Coffeemaker with matching cups, while some use molds and extreme precision for a perfectly uniform look in glazed stoneware or porcelain, like the Star Egg nightlights which project points of light onto the wall through tiny openings. Many items are glazed with extremely bright and whimsical colors, while some are white or more subdued and earth-toned. There are original J. Schatz works in their living space, too: the lamps on either side of the couch, and the swing. “We really focus on simple, important pieces,” Souza says. “Everything we have is minimalist. It’s how we work and live.”

T
he Blue Garden is like a waking dream. The geometry is so precise, the features so mythic, that the garden looks more like a landscape painting than an actual place. Even in photos, the Italianate design inspires awe. But to fully appreciate the grandeur of this privately-owned Newport landmark, you have to know its century-long story of decline and rebirth. The Blue Garden was commissioned in 1908 by Arthur Curtiss James, a successful industrialist, and his philanthropist wife, Harriet Parsons James. Their family was among the wealthiest in the country, and their estate won national attention for its opulence – thanks in large part to the Blue Garden’s designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. The 38-year-old architect was already renowned for his own work, but he also had famous parentage: Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., designed Central Park in Manhattan, among countless other landscape masterpieces. “[Olmsted’s designs] are the most beautiful drawings I’ve ever seen,” says Sarah Vance, Director of the Blue Garden. “And they’re all done by hand.” The Blue Garden was completed in 1913, to the astonishment of the general public. In keeping with its classical beauty, the owners hosted a party and performance, The Masque of the Blue Garden, attended by 300 people, on a balmy August evening. Visitors saw reflective pools, granite columns, and a meandering waterfall. Grassy paths guided them past potted trees and a dazzling spectrum of flowers. But as decades passed, the owners passed away, and the labor-intensive garden fell into disrepair. A layer of scrub covered the soil, and entire walls collapsed. “It was completely consumed by invasive trees and vines,” says Vance.

“We were hired to bring this garden back to life.” The client was Dorrance Hill Hamilton, a legendary Newport preservationist, who wanted to bring James’ Blue Garden and surrounding properties back to their original splendor. She assembled a team of experts, including historian Arleyn Levee, Massachusetts landscape architectural firm Reed Hilderbrand, and Glenn Parker, president of Providence-based Parker Construction. They found the original Olmsted drawings and digitized them, which helped Vance and her collaborators envision the refurbished terrain. “All of the hardscapes are done according to the original drawings,” says Vance. “But they were engineered to meet current code.”

After a two-year restoration process, The Blue Garden reopened in 2014. The garden isn’t an exact replica; the pools use modern fountain technology, and the new plantings had to be manageable for two gardeners, not 30. But the new version is so faithful to the original that a casual visitor, traveling through time, might struggle to spot the differences. For Vance, the project was both a departure and a revelation. “I’m a diehard modernist,” she says. “There’s a beauty about Olmsted’s work that’s almost unparalleled. And this was the greatest opportunity I’ve ever had.”

llen Denisevich-Grickis is fond of old barns. An interior designer based in Connecticut, Ellen knew she wanted a home that integrated pieces of antique agriculture. She already owned a four-acre property in Little Compton with her husband, Bill, and they imagined a summer cottage nestled among the wildflowers. Ellen even visited area farms to examine the old-fashioned architecture. “I knocked on people’s doors and asked if I could do measurements and take photographs,” Ellen remembers. “I ended up designing a house that resembled a barn.” But everything changed when Ellen met a group of “barn scouts” who specialized in repurposing old farms. They encouraged her to use an entire barn, including the walls and roof, instead of select bits and pieces. Eager to sell her on the idea, the barn scouts tracked down an 18th century barn – in northern Ontario.

Ontario was far away, and Ellen was skeptical. She wanted a home that blended nicely into Little Compton’s pastoral landscape. But when the scouts sent her digital photos, Ellen was intrigued by the stone foundation and “bank barn” style, which is traditionally built into the side of a hill. “Bank barns are really common in Little Compton,” she says. Even the barn’s peculiar history piqued her curiosity. “They told me that this barn was built by British Loyalists. They kept insisting I had to see it.” Ellen drove for two days in the dead of winter, and when she reached the

site in Ontario, she felt a surge of inspiration. Better yet, the barn perfectly matched the dimensions of her original design. The shell was taken apart piece by piece, and every last beam was numbered for reassembly later on. Laborers used a crane to pile the 200-yearold lumber onto a single flatbed truck. “There were no nails in the barn,” Ellen recalls. “They were able to take it apart with wooden pins. It looked like a pile of sticks. You wouldn’t believe it was a barn. It was incredible.” When the bundle arrived in Rhode Island, Ellen threw her creative energy

into the final construction. The rustic beams provided a basic framework for the house, but Ellen added a panoply of personal touches, such as polished concrete floors and handblown glass windows. She also commissioned a massive facade and fireplace built from local stone. From the outside, this rich masonry plays nicely off the weathered stone walls that circumscribe the property. The Grickises are also avid collectors, with art pieces and ornate rugs from around the world. Every sconce and chandelier has a special origin story. “It’s a very eclectic interior,” Ellen says. “All the doors are reused. I have light fixtures from Italy. I wanted it to be a mix of fine design ideas.” Since its completion in 2006, the house has

Give them their favorites this spring wowed visitors and become a media darling. The building has been featured in Architectural Digest and on HGTV, and Ellen often uses pictures of the house as examples of her work for potential clients. Sequestered in a woodsy countryside, the Grickis cottage is the perfect home-awayfrom-home. In the summer they relax and host dinners with local friends. Quiet woodland surrounds the house on all sides, and the seaside is only a quick stroll away. The house is also fully winterized, and the Grickises make sure to visit every few weeks, no matter the month or weather pattern. “It’s a great winter house,” Ellen says. “There’s the fireplace. The walls are well insulated. It’s actually warmer than our house in Connecticut.”

auren Leblanc and Andrew Kupke pull from the worlds of dining and design to create stunning, locally sourced table arrangements at Brown Paper Bounty. Leblanc, who has worked in jewelry and design for over a decade, found cooking to be a creative release. Kupke, who moved here from Florida to study at Johnson and Wales, has had a hand in every kind of food job you can think of. Together they applied a designer’s eye to appetizers and charcuterie, giving just as much attention to color, shape, and texture as to the flavor profiles of local goods.

“Setting up food spreads for friends and family started becoming more frequent and the thought of doing it for real started to develop,” explains Leblanc. “Through mutual friends’ encouragement and multiple summertime backyard brainstorming sessions, Brown Paper Bounty started becoming a real business.” Brown Paper Bounty hasn’t met a customer request they couldn’t satisfy. “We will definitely do anything, especially if we can curate it to a certain theme or aesthetic and have fun with it,” says Leblanc. Think a Southern themed spread to compliment a backyard pig roast, complete with hot pepper jelly over goat cheese, a homemade onion dip, and sweet and spicy pecans. Or even a kid’s birthday party with healthy snacks, chocolate covered pretzels, and gummy fruit salad. “We love the possibility to constantly change what we do. If

someone wants a table where all the food is pink? Challenge accepted! We want to venture [out]... not just meat and cheese spreads, but exploring or collaborating with bakers to do dessert themed tables.” The two operate out of the recently opened food business incubator, Pilotworks, in Providence. There they pull from the state’s wealth of purveyors – Seven Stars, Gastros 401, Big Train Farm, and Dahlia Shed to name a few – to create gorgeous arrangements of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and breads for events. Second only to crafting that perfect tablescape is exposing clients to the culinary riches Rhode Island has to offer. “The makers, small business and farms that exist in the area... Rhode Island is pretty small, but packed with very passionate people dedicated to their trade,” says Leblanc. Providence, BrownPaperBounty.com –Tony Pacitti

AT HOME
BACKYARD BLISS There’s nothing quite like sitting in your own yard on a sunny afternoon in a comfy yet stylish chair. Perhaps you have a book in one hand and maybe a locally-brewed beverage in the other. Coastline Casual Furniture’s adirondack chairs not only provide some good sitting, they are Rhode Island made to boot. Made from recycled materials, Coastline’s products continue a storied history of quality that goes back more than 100 years to the founding of Coventry’s own Arnold Lumber. When at home in Rhody, do as the Rhodies do – kick your shoes off, sit back in style, and relax. CoastlineCasual.com. -Tony Pacitti
