Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe
“L
ittle Blue came ver y unexpectedly,” says Susan Bog ue of Newport. “I don’t even have a website yet. Ever ything has been over Instagram.” Little Blue is the name of Bog ue’s 1963 VW Beetle convertible in original Pacific Blue. Having fond childhood memories of her grandfather owning the now-classic automo bile, Bog ue wanted her own Love Bug. After searching for a while, her husband found one. “ We bought it for fun and purely sentimental reasons,” Bog ue starts. “Literally ever y time I take her out, strangers pull up next to me at stop signs or lights to ask me about the age of the car and the color. She’s in great shape and the color is really pretty. The white interior makes the blue really stand out.”

First vows, then vintage VW for Neil and Kate
Last July Bogue’s daughter was set to be maid of honor in her best friend’s wedding when, you guessed it, COVID struck. I never expected to get such a great reaction,” says Bogue. Since last summer, the sky blue vintage VW has been part of many engagement, wedding,

Rhody Pets:
TROTTING DOWN THE AISLE
For couples who don’t want to separate “I do” from Fido, a doggie chaperone at the ceremony is a must
By Belinda Jones The wedding party gasps when she walks in the room – heads turn, faces light up, and camera phones flash, while others rush to greet and adore her. Not the bride, like you may be thinking , but none other than her loyal canine companion. “Careful not to get too much fur on your pants!” Laurie Ruttenburg , owner of Middletown’s Lucky Dog Resort, cautions one gentleman in an immaculate black morning suit. Cream Lab Brodie makes quite the entrance at her owner’s ceremony, an elegant oceanside affair at Belle Mer, where non-human guests are nontraditional but not impossible with a little help. While planning their Newport nuptials, the New Jersey couple was delighted to discover Ruttenburg’s door-to-door Wedding Valet service, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary, to ensure Brodie wouldn’t be overlooked in the joyous day. “We have more bookings than ever,” says Ruttenburg, adding that even storied locations like Rosecliff now make allowances for a special canine cameo, provided they leave before the food is served. Instead of placing the responsibility on a friend or family member, Ruttenburg acts as a dedicated chaperone for the furry guest, beginning with exercise and play at her picturesque facility. She explains, “This helps to get the dogs in a calm and relaxed state.” She also dresses them for the occasion. Ruttenburg shares that recently one Manhattan couple even requested their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel arrive at the Castle Hill Inn in a remote-controlled Porsche. “The place erupted!”

BLOOPER REEL Though pleased to report she’s never witnessed any major mishaps, Ruttenburg relays, “though we did have one 11-year-old chap slide down the aisle like he was on ice – a combination of shiny dress shoes and the Retriever pulling so hard to get to the bride and groom!”
Where every day is
One of Ruttenburg ’s favorite memories took place at St. George’s Chapel in Middletown with rescue pitbull Eva resplendent in a flower wreath. “Not only did the owners make a generous donation to the SPCA in lieu of wedding favors, it was clear that Eva’s loving presence made their big day even more special.”

O
ne year ago, we talked with small business owners in the local wedding and event industr y whose work shifted dramatically as COVID-19 gripped the region, the countr y, and the world. Rhode Island wedding pro fessionals in particular were in a precarious position, juggling clients postponing their big day to an unknown future date, couples who slashed their g uest counts and hosted micro -weddings, and those who quietly wed and hoped for a bigger post-pandemic celebration, or simply gave up the dream of a large wedding. Since Gov. McKee lifted all remaining capacity restrictions this past May, the industr y has been all systems go. Photographer Sara Zarrella and her business partner Dan Phillips worked ever y weekend throughout 2020, but the entire industr y was in constant flux and looked remarkably different. “It was a mix of extreme downsizing

– I’m talking weddings down to five people – as well as complete cancellations with other couples sliding into those spots. You name it. And on the administrative side, scheduling , rescheduling , redoing contracts, cancelling , and downsizing took triple the amount of time. The thing about photography in this industr y is, whether it’s two people or 200, we’re working ,” says Zarrella. This year, she says, inventor y is scarce at best, prompting couples to consider mid-week weddings or delay until 2022 – or beyond. “ The industr y is booming and there are only so many dates. We are booked solid this year and sadly turning people away,” she says. The pandemic was the impetus that inspired these photographers to launch a long-considered podcast, Wedding Secrets Unveiled! (Zarrella hosts, Phillips produces), which features insights and advice from predominantly Rhode Island-based industr y professionals. Navigating weddings
during COVID organically manifests in many of their conversations. When we spoke to makeup artist Allison Barbera, who manages a team of 18 independent contractor makeup artists, around this time last year she had just co -founded the Rhode Island Coalition of Wedding Vendors Facebook group. The group brought industr y professionals together digitally to advocate for opening up capacity restrictions with health procedures in place in order to have safe weddings and events. The group evolved into the Rhode Island Coalition of Wedding & Event Professionals (RICWEP), now under the leadership of Luke Renchan of Luke Renchan Entertainment, and it continues to connect small business owners, provide resources, and advance industr y interests. Barbera says today, the wedding business is thriving in Rhode Island. “We are doing usually four to five weddings on weekends now …

We’ve had weddings on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday,” she reveals. “It’s not rare to get a Wednesday inquiry now and that used to be very uncommon.” She says that since March, demand steadily increased and that now, she turns down work every single day. Bookings into 2022 are robust, she adds, and inquiries for 2023 are coming in. “Things are good. I’m very tired, but things are good,” she says with a laugh. “I can’t complain after the revenue loss of 2020.” Kate DeCosta, the chief operating officer of the Newport Experience, which includes OceanCliff and Regatta Place in Newport, in addition to the Schooner Aurora which is popular for wedding weekend experiences, says demand is high across the board. “ We’re jamming two summers and the rest of the year into one, basically – double the volume we usually do,” says DeCosta. “ We are almost fully committed through 2022.”

Which Wedding is Right for You? 6 WAYS TO EXCHANGE VOWS INSPIRED BY REAL-LIFE CEREMONIES BY Elyse Major
p
lanning a wedding can be as simple or complex as you want it to be ; there is no wrong answer. The most important underlying factor is that the day is personal to you and your intended. Begin by asking yourselves some questions: What makes you happy? What can you afford? How much time do you need to realize this vision? What is the setting you want ? For a small state, Rhode Island offers limitless possibilities for every budget – from opulent venues with or without beachfronts, to glitzy cityscapes, farmland, even grassy backyards. Here is a sampling of some real-life nuptials to help inspire your own planning.

The Beach Wedding ERIN MCGINN PHOTOGRAPHY • THE DUNES CLUB, NARRAGANSETT Though they grew up worlds apart – Pablo from el campo in Argentina and Allison from Rhode Island – the feeling of home was what this couple wanted to express through their nuptials. Allison has always summered in Narragansett, so when it came time to plan her American wedding to Pablo, her thoughts immediately led to the shoreline. With “light-filled, natural, breezy, and full of love,” as personal directives from the couple’s roots, Allison took her color cues from the ocean. “Greens and blues from the seafoam, and golden hues from the sand dunes were pulled in as the source of inspiration for the wedding stationer y suite, florals, and decor,” says the newlywed. “Supporting local artisans and creatives was important to us and a large majority used for the wedding were women-run businesses that added unparalleled creativity to the sentiments of a warm Rhode Island summer night,” she adds. DWRI Letterpress created menus in both English and Spanish, and the couple shared vows in both lang uages. The day ended up being a perfect blend of their two lives, and they followed up with a second celebration in Argentina.

THREE MONTHS PRIOR:
License to Marry
Save this date: Couples marrying in Rhode Island must apply for a license at a city or town clerk’s office. The license is valid for three months after the issuance date. Both people must apply for the license in person and sign the application in the presence of a city or town clerk or his or her assistant. If both applicants live in Rhode Island, apply for the license from the city/ town clerk of the residence of either applicant. The marriage license is valid in any city or town in Rhode Island and the couple may be married anywhere in Rhode Island. Marriage licenses cost $24. For more information visit Health.RI.gov
Make It Your Own Want the beach as your backdrop? There are many venues to make that happen and at a range of costs – from private places like The Dunes Club (shown) to Igg y’s Boardwalk, Warwick, and more. Tip: Check with Parks & Recs departments to see if town beaches and parks are available to use for weddings.

Love waits for no one: When Letitia and Brenton were ready to get married, there was a pandemic going on. Rather than delay, the couple decided to move forward and host a small affair, known as a micro-wedding , in the heart of the city. To include extended and far-away family and friends, the pair provided a Zoom link for well-wishers to experience the ceremony virtually. Even now with masks tucked away, the popularity of micro-weddings is likely to continue. Shorter guest lists translate to smaller everything , including costs, making hosting events more affordable.
Make It Your Own There’s something about a city wedding that evokes a timeless glamour with New Year’s Eve feels no matter the season. After a rough time of it, the hospitality industry is at your service more than ever as they recover. Find hotels around the city including The Ballroom at Providence G, The Dean (shown), The Graduate, Hotel Providence, Skyline at Waterplace, and newcomer Dye House, among others. Don’t forget about restaurants – Gracie’s consistently gets rave reviews thanks to Kendal Fitzsimmons, their director of catering, who makes clients feel at ease from start to finish.

The Backyard Wedding BROOKE NASH PHOTOGRAPHY • PRIVATE RESIDENCE, JAMESTOWN
Like so many couples, Kate and Neil saw their wedding plans derailed due to the pandemic. A post on The Knot, a leading online wedding planning and marketplace, informed guests that the pair planned to keep their original July date but limit the celebration to immediate family and closest friends. What Kate and Neil assembled could not have been more personal or joyous. Held in the backyard of the groom’s family home in Jamestown, the couple exchanged vows on the premises followed by a cocktail hour, passed hors d’oeuvres, dinner, a dessert of homemade churros, and a late-night snack of sliders. No limo for this fun bunch – instead a vintage Beetle was the perfect prop (read more about Little Blue on page 12), along with charming touches like fans on wood benches, a rustic arbor, and a bicycle welcoming guests.
Make It Your Own Taking a second look at the backyard? Rental companies can help put all the puzzle pieces together with invento ries at the ready of chairs, flooring , tents, tables, bars, linens, and more. In addition to standard companies like Rhode Island Rentals, Ocean State Rentals, etc., if you’re looking for something like a blush pink and gold ottoman to rent, check out Uniquely Chic Vintage based in Lincoln for unexpected panache.

The Outside-the-Venue Wedding PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENN BAKOS ZEPHYR FARM, CRANSTON
Ashley and Sarah chose a place that isn’t a wedding venue at all but through a friendship with the owner, who graciously allowed a little fete on her farm, the couple fashioned a day to remember. “ We were initially supposed to get married at The Guild in Pawtucket with about 75 guests, but pretty early on during COVID, Sarah and I made the tough decision to move forward with our wedding ceremony but not have guests,” explains Ashley. “ We turned one of the seed houses on the farm into our romantic dinner setting , decorated simply with string lights, fresh flowers, and candles. It was intimate and magical.”

The outdoor nuptials of Sarah and Joe blended seamlessly into the breathtaking outdoor setting of Rhode Island on the cusp of autumn. Held at The Farmer’s Daughter, an inspiring garden center worth a visit even for those sans green thumbs, now also boasts the Event Field, which can accommodate 20 to 400 guests. Bordered by tall pines, evergreen trees, and garden, the area connects with the Ceremony/Small Reception Site by a privet hedge. This was the setting for the late-September wedding of Sarah and Joe who played off authentic farm surroundings with everything from a burlap “Mr. & Mrs.” banner, an inventive array of raw wood accents, and bridal party gowns in a bohemian mix of warm orange hues in solids and floral prints.

Make It Your Own While plenty of planning and nerves obviously went into creating this day, the takeaway from the wedding is an air of a relaxed good time. The bride’s hair typifies the day – a pretty braid adorned with floral sprigs with wisps of hair flowing about, not tightly sprayed. A casual sensibility permits everyone to kick off their shoes and enjoy the day with ease.

The Traditional Wedding
PHOTOGRAPHY BY M STUDIOS BELLE MER, NEWPORT
For many couples with strong connections to religion, it’s almost a given that the wedding ceremony will take place in a house of worship. Chelsea and Jim were married at St. Joseph’s Church before heading off to Belle Mer for their reception. The Newport venue is perfect for couples who want to put their feet in the sand at the Ocean Lawn for beach photos and then head back inside for a fancy reception amidst cr ystal chandeliers. Continuing with the classics, Chelsea wore a romantic ballgown-style wedding dress with a veil and held a large bouquet of flowers. The pair’s personality and Rhody love was evident via whimsical touches like a Del’s Lemonade cart on-site.
Make It Your Own There are many moving parts to a traditional wedding, including transportation, but it’s all worth it for couples who want their day to begin exchanging vows at a house of worship. Venues such as Belle Mer have their own wedding planning services, day-of coordinators, kitchen facilities, and more, which can help streamline a complex itinerary. Like the idea of an on-site events team? Look at country clubs and places like Twelve Acres in Smithfield and The Preserve in Wyoming (Rhode Island, of course).

rom coast to city, our little state has no shortage of bakeries to choose from when it comes to planning for the dessert of the hour. Maybe you just have a color scheme in mind, or you have a full-fledged vision just waiting to be put to frosting. Thankfully, wedding cake consultations not only give you the chance to iron out the details with a professional, but sampling flavors is also an event in itself to help build anticipation for the big day. Here are a handful of specialty cake businesses big and small, classic and eccentric, to start with.

Toasting Local Vineya rd s s h a re tips for selecting w ine lists with New Engl a nd ter roi rs By A n n O ’ N ei l l

ou’ve got your menu planned. The cake is a go. Table settings are artfully arranged. But before you check off dining from the list, there’s still wine to be selected! This process can be as methodical or simple as you’d like, but you’ll want to know what’s in your glass when it comes time to cheers-ing your happy union. A few experts from local vineyards weigh in.
Gooseneck Vineyard’s variety of styles to choose from
Goos ene ck Vi neya rd s When it comes to selection, Gooseneck’s co-founding cousins, Paul Fede and Liana Buonanno, can help even the least wine savvy among us. Currently trending is their Picpoul De Pinet, a zesty, dry white wine that pairs wonderfully with oysters and creamy cheeses. Wickford White is a refreshing and slightly effervescent choice perfect for the reception. They also offer reds that embrace, “…sassy red fruits,” and “serious darker fruits.” For clinking glasses, you can’t go wrong with bubbly: a fruit-driven Prosecco. Though Gooseneck doesn’t host weddings, Fede says they do “love to create an experience at our winery and host a private tasting for the couple. It just creates a personal connection to their special day.” Looking for a unique spin on the first anniversary frozen cake tradition? Opt instead for one of Gooseneck’s 15-liter bottles. Guests can sign it at the reception, leaving the couple with a distinctive keepsake.

Newpor t Vi neya rd s That pink-hued wine might still be trending everywhere, but Newport’s Dry Rosé just won Best in Show, out of 160 entries, at the Rosé Competition in Fort Lauderdale. “Great White is by far our most popular wine, very crowd pleasing and a nod to our coastal location,” says Cassandra Earle, director of marketing and business development. Newport also creates special seasonal sangrias and a summer “Frosé Pop” – literally a rosé popsicle (for a summer fête). Catering for their own events, the chefs at Newport Vineyards are experts at pairing their wines with their fresh, in-house cuisine. So couples who aren’t sommeliers are in good hands. W inter Haw k V i n eyard s With construction of the winery in full swing , smart couples with plans for 2022 and beyond can boast being one of the first to marry at “The most beautiful vineyard in Rhode Island,” according to owner Rick Dyer. Popular right now are their award-winning Red Zinfandel and a Chardonnay so oaky it’s been called “tawny” and is a great choice for the bold and adventurous. Dyer assures couples that you can never go wrong if you “choose the wine you like and the food you like.” That said, they are happy to host a private tasting for couples who would like to familiarize themselves with the full current selection. As a small boutique farm, WinterHawk will be able to accommodate up to 125 at receptions. “It’s intimate so you are never far from the vineyard experience,” says Dyer. Creating an understated winery with Old World charm has been the vision for WinterHawk over the past several years. If special estate bottles are available, WinterHawk Vineyards also enjoys sending one as a gift to the newly married couple. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy Simple and savory, these dainty apps are bridal shower perfection By Liz Murray
A
sk any former bride, and they’ll tell you they remember their bridal shower better than the wedding itself. Through the whirlwind of greeting hundreds of guests, worrying about your hair and makeup at every turn, and making sure bridesmaids are all getting along, it’s no wonder the day gets a little fuzzy. The bridal shower, on the other hand, should be a breezy day of gifts and tasty snacks. It’s with this rite of passage in mind that I developed this Crab Cake Stuffed Lemon recipe. Lemon hulls make the perfect vessel for these impeccably moist crab cakes, with a crunchy seasoned top. The fact that this appetizer can be eaten out of its own container is great for grazing – and plate-free, more sustainable, too!
C ra b C a ke S t u f fe d Le m o n s ING RE DIE N TS • 6 Tbsp mayonnaise • 4 egg yolks • 32 oz lump crab meat • 2 Tbsp chopped dill • 2 Tbsp chopped parsley • 2 Tbsp dijon mustard • 6 Tbsp fresh-squeezed lemon juice • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper • ½ tsp garlic powder • 2 sleeves of original Ritz crackers • 10 large lemons
STE PS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Cut each lemon in half, and scoop the insides out using a spoon. Start where the lemon flesh meets the white pith and press the spoon between the two. Work your way around the lemon, taking care not to rip the lemon or make any holes. 3. Taking one half, cut a thin piece off of the bottom of the lemon so that the lemon will sit flat. Tr y not to cut all of the way through: there should not be a hole in the bottom of the lemon (but if there is, don’t worr y – you can still use it!). 4. In a large bowl, crumble the Ritz crackers by hand so they are almost completely crumbs. Add mayonnaise, garlic powder, cayenne, egg yolks, parsley, dill, crab meat, and lemon juice. Mix to fully combine. When you’re adding the crab, use your fingers to feel for any shell pieces and remove. 5. Place each lemon half on a baking sheet or muffin pan. Scoop the crab mixture into each lemon.
The freshest bet for sourcing crab meat is to go local, watching for the RI Seafood logo and visiting neighborhood fish markets. Fun fact: for the 400 miles of coastline we have, over 90 percent of the seafood we consume is actually imported. Fresh catch rather than canned when it comes to these dainty crab delicacies will make the day all the more memorable (and delicious!). Consult SeafoodRI.com to find local markets with crab fresh off the boat for this recipe and other seafood hors d’oeuvres on your bridal shower menu. Or, any of these vendors are a great place to start.
50
American Mussel Har vesters, North Kingstown Anchor Seafood, Warwick Andrade’s Catch, Bristol Fearless Fish Market, Providence Walrus & Carpenter Oysters, Jamestown & Charlestown
6. Place in the oven and cook for 25 minutes, until the tops of the crab cakes become brown. 7. Remove from the oven, squeeze lemon juice over the top, and garnish with parsley and dill. Ser ve immediately, and enjoy ! For more tips and recipes, visit RecipeHippie.com or follow @recipehippie on Instagram.

The same awareness with local flowers has been a little slower to catch on, especially in the wedding industr y, but fresh, chemical-free blooms grown in your community deser ve a place at the table as well.

Fi e l d to Vase
In the Zone
The decision to feature local and seasonal materials at your event is a direct investment in the farms and farm workers in your community and a positive alternative to the environmental and health issues linked to imported flowers. In their short journey from field to vase, local flowers use less fuel for transportation, less energy for refrigeration, and less packaging than their imported relatives. If local flowers aren’t available at the time of your wedding, you can work with a florist to source certified US Grown or Fair Trade flowers (traceable farms that follow social and environmental growing standards).
When planning to create your own event flowers, begin by educating yourself on seasonal availability direct from farms. Options range from pre-order bulk buckets of mixed varieties, individual stems, single variety bunches, or first-come, first-ser ved bouquets. Instagram is a great resource for weekly crop updates and you can scroll back through farm feeds to see offerings in the weeks before and after your scheduled event date. The selection at different farms will var y depending on the farmer’s personal taste, what grows best in their climate, and what sells well in their market.

Bl o o m S e r vice If DIY is not your thing, choose to work with a florist who specializes in local blooms and regularly sources from a network of local farms. Hot tip: Florists who are consistent supporters of farms and buy a variety of material all season long have the best access to local blooms! Inspirational wedding designs emerge from the mutually beneficial collaboration between florist and farmer as there are always unexpected surprises from Mother Nature. Trust in your chosen floral professional is required (if you need to see an exact sample, this is not for you), but the results of truly embracing local and seasonal flowers are breathtaking and will be completely unique to your wedding. SEASONAL STYLE
AVOID FOAM
For a better chance at getting your hands on your favorite blooms for your wedding , let seasonality g uide the selection of your date! Choose an early spring date if daffodils, lily of the valley, and ranunculus are your thing , or one in late summer for showy dahlias and hydrangea.
Floral foam is a petroleumderived product used to hold stems in place and provide a water source for blooms, but the green blocks cannot be composted and contribute to micro -plastic pollution. Be sure to request foam-free arrangement alternatives from your florist.

Carefree Fishtails Enjoy the day with beautiful no-fuss braids By Elyse Major
U
nless you’re getting married in a bubble, almost every bride has hair concerns due to weather. Will straight hair go flat, will curly hair get big ? Keep concerns at bay with braids. What makes this style so perfect is its imperfection. We’re not talking a tight plastered French braid but something loose and tousled. “My styling is very soft, boho, and romantic,” says Alexandra Wilson of Hair Styling by Alexandra Wilson in East Greenwich. A hairstylist for nearly a dozen years, Wilson found Insta-success after sharing images of her intricate braiding , leading to being featured on the social pages of Allure, Bustle, and Good Morning America, among other national sites. In addition to adorning hair with sprigs, blossoms, pearls, and jewels, for “summery boho” styles, Wilson often adds volumizing powders that smell like the beach. “I’m very passionate about what I do and truly love being a part of the wedding industry.” Learn more at: HairStylingbyAlexandraWilson.com; Instagram: @alexandralee1016

Meet Julie Christina After years as a horticulturist at private estates, this floral designer is shaping her own path with Christina Flower Co. By S ascha Martin
What is your favorite type of arrangement to design for a wedding? I love making large statement pieces. From an arbor to a large-scale urn, it is ver y satisf ying to go big and add some serious wow factor! At the same time, the couple is ever ything and nailing a bouquet or boutonnières is a top priority. You don’t realize how magic and special flowers really are until you feel them – they can literally raise your vibrational frequency and completely transform a space. Not to mention they will enhance those wedding photos that are a big investment. If someone asked you to design a Rhode Island-themed floral arrangement, what would it include and why? Something blue to capture the ocean, peachy pinks to highlight golden-hour sunsets, sandy shades capturing coastal vibes, and creamy whites of the historic marble architecture. Throw in a little beach grass for texture and maybe some berries for interest.
When you’re not clipping stems and arranging blooms, how do you like to spend your downtime? With my family ; my two boys are my world. You can often find all of us in gardens! Making them, designing them, creating containers, visiting them. Gardens are the backbone of this company.

O
f all the many items on your wedding planning checklist, selecting the invitation suite of stationer y may be the most fun activity. The “suite” is a chic way of saying all the paper goods – including the star of the show – the invitation. Just like a wedding , invitations can be as simple or fancy, low-cost or high-end as you wish, and you are likely to enjoy the process of perusing papers, designs, ink colors, ribbons, wax stamps, and more. Invitations can stand alone as their own element or offer recipients a first glimpse into a theme. No matter your aesthetic, here’s what’s what: THE BASICS •
•
Invitation & Envelope : Generally the largest piece, the invite has all of the important details. Response Card & SASE*: Be sure to provide a clear R SVP deadline.
*Self-addressed stamped envelope

Pretty stamps for all mailings.
THE EXTR AS •
Save the Date Card : An optional card that lets g uests know to reser ve a spot on their calendar because a special invite will be on its way.
•
Inner Envelope : A smaller envelope that holds the invitation within the larger envelope.
•
Reception Card : Information for g uests if the reception will be held at a different location than the ceremony.
THE THANK YOUS Most manners experts suggest sending thank-you cards for all gifts received within three months of the wedding. Make having cards a no -brainer by either including them in your suite or purchasing separately to have and to send, and get stamps, too! INVITATION SOURCES •

Rhody Reads Take a vow to read more with 6 books by local authors celebrating love and marriage By Hug h Minor
D
early beloved, this month’s column highlights six books by local authors that center around the timeless traditions and challenges of weddings and marriages. Getting to that sacred place isn’t always easy and many times love struggles to find a way. But the journey is often the best part of the story, so take a trip down the aisle with these selections and see who finds true happiness in the end. “Rhody Mamas” blogger Audrey McClelland has written her first book, Hometown Boy, the beginning of a series about the McKay sisters. When Samantha returns to her hometown for her sister’s wedding , she reconnects with high school sweetheart Colin Dasher, whose name alone sounds like trouble. Will they rekindle the flame that burned more than a decade ago? Or have they changed in ways that make it impossible for them to see eye to eye ? Read it to find out if this small-town romance ends happily-ever-after. In the fictional town of Rome, Rhode Island, Beckett and Levi are so focused on caring for their families that they’ve never been given the chance to search for their own happiness. But in Marina Adair’s Hopeless Romantic, the time may have come for them to focus on their needs and desires and maybe make the most of something they never saw before. With room in their lives for love, it’s time to decide if they’re willing to take the leap and make it happen. Pulitzer-Prize winning author (for the brilliant Middlesex) Jeffrey Eugenides explores the intricacies of marriage and its role in postmodern society in The Marriage Plot. Told through the interlocking
70
love affairs of three students at Brown University in the early 1980s, the stor y revolves around the choices they make when searching for love, especially when they’re not even sure what they’re tr ying to find. From George Eliot to Jane Austen, Eugenides connects his modern love stor y with the rich tradition of romantic fiction. Love blooms at Christmastime in beautiful, scenic Newport. Shelley Noble’s A Newport Christmas Wedding follows Meri and Alden as they prepare for their special day while managing the emotional challenges of merging two families. Meri is especially concerned about taking on her new role as stepmother to Lucas and Nora, Alden’s daughter who becomes more emotionally distant the closer they get to the big event. It may take a Christmas miracle to bring this family together. Rock and roll bands are often known for their tumultuous love affairs, but Chris Frantz tells a different stor y about his relationship with bandmate and lover Tina Weymouth in his memoir Remain in Love. As a founding member of the Talking Heads, Frantz recounts their early days attending RISD and exploring the music scene in Providence, including tales of legendar y frontman David Byrne, but the real center is the epic journey Frantz has taken with one constant in his life, his endless love and tireless collaborator. You’re never too old to fall in love. That’s one of the many life lessons in Fay Weldon’s novel Rhode Island Blues. When spry 83-year-old Felicity Utrillo meets dashing 72-year-old William Johnson, the sparks fly, but not everyone is happy about the arrangement. And Felicity’s 30-something granddaughter Sophia brings even more drama to the scene as she discovers her own murky family history. Old wounds heal and new love abounds sometimes when you least expect it.
