Let the Fashion Begin Welcome to StyleWeek Northeast’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection! I’m so proud of how far StyleWeek has come in the past two years. What star ted as a dream of spotlighting emerging talent in Providence has become a true celebration of style in the Nor theast, and one of the few regional fashion events recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Our accomplishments are due, in large par t, to the hard work and passion of our dedicated staff, the sponsors who believe in the StyleWeek vision and the City of Providence for its appreciation of the economic impact StyleWeek makes locally and regionally. It is wonderful to see how StyleWeek has reached beyond the borders of Providence. By influencing trendsetters and tastemakers of all demographics, StyleWeek has grown into a community of individuals who faithfully attend our runway shows, shop in our Accessory Showcase, support independent designers and, simply put, spread the buzz about what great fashion we have in this region.

TING BARNARD A Golden Moment
Ting Barnard, the designer behind the Tong Collection, is a force to be reckoned with. The young mother, who moved from Laos to New England as a baby, left a high profile career in finance to pursue her dream of fashion design. This StyleWeek marks her debut. “The Tong Collection embraces Southeast Asian-inspired colors and fabrics with a modern twist,” Ting describes. “I think it’s impor tant for women to feel confident, bold, daring and carefree when they dress up. It’s all about how you work it.” Ting decided to make the change in careers, she says, “because I’m constantly trying to expand my wardrobe with unique designs.” However, she finds her biggest inspiration in a personal place: “The true inspiration for the Tong Collection is my mother Tong,” Ting explains. “Her name literally means Gold in Thai/Laotian. The Tong Collection celebrates other strong and influential women in my life who have shaped who I am.” For her debut collection, Ting will show clothing that can go from the office to an evening on the town. “This collection is versatile, seasonless and figure-friendly for every shape, size, color and style,” she says. “It’s quite fancy, and in a way very elegant, as the Tong woman is.” tongcollection.com

kara wickman Fabulous from Day to Night “My collections always stem from what I would like to wear,” Kara Wickman confesses. The mother of two young boys knows what an on-the-go woman wants from clothing: fashion and function. “The Kara Wickman woman,” she says, “is desk to dinner, playground to office meeting, or beach to evening cocktails. I like to feel comfortable and look put together at the same time.” On the runway at this StyleWeek, expect to see lots of color. “Color blocking is a main component of this collection,” she describes. “You can play with placement of color and seams to compliment any figure.” The Rhode Island native, who holds four master seamstress cer tifications, is also inspired by creating her first-ever wedding gown design. “I so thoroughly enjoyed it,” Kara says. “You may just see a finale gown, hint, hint.” Kara Wickman designs will be available at Stalise in Por tsmouth in September, and she is available for custom work. “I want to thank Rosanna Or tiz Sinel for giving a mommy who was sewing out of her basement less than two years ago a shot at this,” Kara says. Her August StyleWeek show is sponsored by Flaunt Boutique in Smithfield. Kara also wants to thank her intern Marian Gibson, and her husband Chris. karawickman.com, Twitter: @Kara_Wickman

abernethy Staying Within the Lines “I like clean lines and pieces that will stand the test of time,” Jess Abernethy says of her design aesthetic. “My clothing is classic and sleek. I’m very inspired by the first half of the 1900s and try to bring a little bit of those time periods into each of my collections.” Though Jess now calls Providence home, she spent many years in Germany and attended the Munich campus of ESMOD, the esteemed French fashion design university. That European influence is present in her new collection. “For the upcoming StyleWeek show I took inspiration from the 1950s and the French Riviera,” she explains. “I wanted the clothes to give off a feeling of casual beach wear, but also European chic.” Watch for the interplay between her timeless silhouettes and bright, summery colors and patterns on the runway. When not designing entire collections – she has participated in every StyleWeek since its inception – Jess spends a lot of time doing custom pieces out of her studio. “I love seeing people in something that I have created,” she says, “seeing them happy, comfor table and looking great.” Jess’s work is available at Lola in Providence and by custom order. Her Spring/Summer 2013 collection is sponsored by The Savory Grape. jessabernethy.com

kolanko New on the Scene “I’ve always had a love for the ar ts and fashion design,” Stephanie Kolanko explains. “I am constantly learning new techniques and methods, and drawing inspiration from everywhere.” As a recent graduate from the Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design depar tment at the University of Rhode Island, Stephanie truly epitomizes StyleWeek’s mission to support emerging talent. In college, Stephanie says, she took any and every creative class she could find, like photography, floral design and garment construction. “Anything that involved a creative mind was intriguing,” she explains. As a student, she participated in the Fashion Merchandising Society’s EcoChic Fashion Show and Spring Splash, and won Audience Favorite for her line Professional Flirt. So what can we expect from this budding designer? “My Spring/Summer 2013 line is inspired by the effor tlessly chic summer lifestyle we all seek. She’s a girl that changes her mind about what to wear as much as the sun sets.” Look for elements of breezy bohemian, soft pastels and lace paired with rock and roll and eclectic indie influences. “I think my personality comes through in my clothing,” Stephanie says. “It portrays a confident girl who can follow trends, but who adds her own personal flair to whatever look she feels like rocking that day.” Stephanie is available for custom orders. stephaniekolankodesigns@gmail.com

schwartz Design Out Loud “My work is body-conscious, loud, sexy and fun,” Zev Schwartz says of his collection Zev Isaiah. “It’s all about utilizing bold color and texture to bring attention to the wearer.” Having recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, Zev will be showing his line for the first time at August’s StyleWeek. His work is characterized by creative use of knitwear, leather work and hand embellishment, and is for both men and women. It’s bold, colorful and pure fun – which makes sense, considering that Zev has trained with fashion and costume designers in New York City, Providence and Helsinki. “I find inspiration in history, global culture, art and nightlife,” he says. For this collection, Zev has been looking to the West. “I have been looking at Pacific Nor th West American Indian totem poles, and the art and culture of the people that created them,” he says. “The idea is to look at the graphic elements of the totems and to apply them directly on the body in garments for men and women: dresses, spor tswear, knitwear and swimwear.” zevisaiah.com

maria del carmen mercado Fashionable Fiber Arts
“Inspiration for me comes from everywhere,” says Maria Del Carmen Mercado. “Especially from people-watching, nature and my surroundings.” Her inspiration also comes from the Dominican Republic, where she was born and raised. As she describes it, Maria makes “ar t to wear inspired by Hispanic heritage.” Bella Vista, her Spring/Summer 2013 collection, is named after the town where she grew up. “This collection will have exciting pops of color and clean lines, and is full of sophistication and sensuality,” Maria says. “Bella Vista is a reflection of the Dominican Republic: our music, beaches and how we are just full of life.” Maria’s work is defined by her ar tfulness: she hand-dyes fabrics, and is a fiber artist as well as a Fashion Institute of Technology-trained designer. Her work has been displayed in several galleries, including the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. Though she makes fine ar t, Maria makes accessible clothing. “I make unique, one of a kind designs that are tailored for the modern woman with real curves.” Maria Del Carmen Mercado clothing is available in her Etsy shop, at Lola in Providence and by custom order. mariadelcarmenmercado.com

nicole lebreux La Vie Boheme “I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drummer,” says Nicole Lebreux, the creative force behind the environmentally-conscious and ethically-made Nicole Lebreux Original Apparel. Before star ting her own line, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, worked in fashion in New York, owned a vintage shop in Newpor t and went out traveling the world. “It was my education and time spent traveling abroad that really gave me my focus,” Nicole explains. “I learned so much about the poor labor practices that go into massproduced fashion. I decided to create something that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also ethically different.” Her clothing repurposes vintage items, uses environmentally conscious fabric and is made locally. Of her Spring/Summer 2013 line, Nicole says: “True to form, my collection stems from the ideas of comfort and confidence. But for this spring, I am playing with the idea of restrictions, or lack thereof, in my garments.” Her signature staples, like leggings, retro-inspired swimwear and wrap dresses and skir ts will all be present, but with a new emphasis on contrasting fabric and color choices. Look for neon and pastel combinations, and leotards topped with sheer fabrics. Nicole Lebreux Original Apparel is available at boutiques on the East and West Coasts, regional artisan fairs and her Etsy shop. nicolelebreux.com

Camille jeanay A Driving Force Detroit’s Camille Jeanay is a woman on a mission: to become a force in the fashion world. At only 13, she began selling her own hand-constructed garments, and was named Detroit’s best young designer at 18. Camille has also started a handful of non-profits to give back to the city. On top of all of that, she designs inspired, wearable clothing for Camille Jeanay Clothing Company. “My work is fun, edgy, sexy and vibrant,” Camille says. “My pieces have life to them; they’re for women who are not only trendsetters but are confident with themselves.” Camille Jeanay Clothing Company designs ready-to-wear, evening wear, gowns and swimwear, and does private commissions. “My inspiration comes from many of my favorite colors. You will see lots of prints and colors such as pink, purple and white,” she says. For her Providence debut, Camille will be showing Safari Ablaze, a fun, vibrant collection that utilizes animal prints in unexpected ways. “The collection will be easy to transition from those cool spring nights to all those hot summer days,” she describes. “My theme is to just bring fun, life, vibrance and sexiness to the runway. Expect to be amazed!” camillejeanay.com

cleverhood All-Weather Chic Cleverhood’s Susan Mocarski is passionate about many things, but foremost among them is city living and urban exploration. “Walking and biking in a city is my favorite way to get around and explore,” she says. “I’m not a fan of the term ‘weather permitting.’ I was tired of trying to decide whether I wanted to look sharp or stay dry.” Her solution to this dilemma: Cleverhood, the unisex rain cape that’s making a splash all over the countr y. Cleverhood capes are a smar t, fashionable alternative to rain gear. Their design makes them par ticularly popular with bikers (on actual bicycles, or “slow bikes,” that is), which Susan is par ticularly happy about. “Beyond reducing traffic and encouraging exercise, city bikers tend to take greater interest in their local environment, better suppor t local businesses and usher in new ideas in ar t and fashion,” she says. The ‘hoods also pay homage to Providence – Susan’s home for the last 15 years – with names like the T.F. Green (green plaid) and the John Brown (brown brushed microfiber). Susan is also working with a local mill to design her own fabric. “Fashion combined with high performance is my idea of high style,” she says. “It is the ultimate to find a garment that looks good and feels good.” Cleverhood is available online and in Providence at Clover and Legend Bicycles. cleverhood.com

toni lyn spaziano All for Chance “I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember,” says Rhode Island native Toni Lyn Spaziano, the creative force behind Chances R Designs. But it wasn’t until Toni met a boy named Chance, a little person who perseveres despite his disabilities, that she was inspired to star t her own line, which she debuted at January StyleWeek 2012. Her Spring/Summer 2013 collection is inspired in equal parts by the classic design houses – Chanel, Dior, Yves St. Laurent – and by chic, polished Upper East Side fashion. “But true to the season,” Toni describes, “it will consist of much lighter colors and fabrics. I like to envision the very stylish working city girl, but then think about what she would wear while vacationing in the Hamptons.” Expect to see a bit of summery, bohemian flair in her show. “While the pieces stay classic and refined, I want to subtly incorporate that liberating feeling of the time,” she says. A portion of the proceeds from Chances R benefit Team Chance, which funds a summer camp for disabled kids. Toni’s clothing is available by special order and at select stores on the East Coast. chancesrdesigns.com.

susan troy A Look to the Past Susan Troy finds art in everything: textures and colors in nature, architecture, urban decay, historicity. Her Spring/ Summer 2013 collection, in fact, was inspired by photographs that she took in an old, abandoned mill in Pawtucket. “One particular photograph depicted a layering of doors and windows with a piece of worn fabric hanging from the ceiling,” she says. “What inspired me about this image was the hanging tenderness of the fabric in the dark, decaying mill. This juxtaposition made me think of soft transparency layered with opacity and texture.” Susan, who attended both UMass Dartmouth for textile and fiber arts, and Boston’s School of Fashion Design for construction and pattern making, uses her artistic training to forge her own path in the fashion world – including creating her own patterns and fabrics by manipulating her photography and printing it onto cloth. “I am motivated to make clothing for women that is comfortable and stylish,” she says. “I do not follow fashion trends. I do, however, investigate color trends and adjust them to meet my aesthetic. Being a fashion designer allows me to use my art in a utilitarian way.” susantroy.wordpress.com. macdonald Mix and Match “I aim to create garments that make women look and feel beautiful, stylish and confident,” declares Hope Macdonald, and she has the tools to do it. Having recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in apparel design, Hope has also studied fashion in New York and in Paris at the Musée des Ar ts Décoratifs le Louvre. “I went to RISD with the intention of focusing on painting or sculpture,” Hope says, “but spontaneously decided to major in apparel design, despite having no experience sewing or designing.” It was simply her creative passion that drove her – all of those other ar tistic media play into her designs. “My aesthetic is driven by interesting color and print combinations, which are suppor ted by simple and classic silhouettes,” she says. For the Providence debut of her Spring/Summer 2013 collection – Hope also showed at StyleWeek Resor t in Miami this summer – she is letting the materials do the talking. “My inspiration for this collection comes primarily from the fabrics themselves,” Hope describes. “I am obsessed with prints and bold colors, and I wanted to push the way we traditionally think of putting fabrics together. Matching is my least favorite word.” hmacdonald.com

sarah prost All in the Details “Nothing makes me happier than several perfectly placed buttons marching neatly down a garment,” says Sarah Prost, designer of Yellow Clover. “My work is very detail focused. I love to include special touches like patterned pocket linings or hand embroidery. Maybe only the wearer knows about it, but it makes her feel special every time she puts it on.” Sarah, who lives in New Hampshire, grew up on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. She spent some time backpacking through Australia, Japan and Europe before returning to Canada to enroll at Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design. Her Yellow Clover Spring/Summer 2013 collection, Kopanitse, reflects that worldliness and was inspired by her husband’s Slovakian heritage. “Slovakians are known for their use of bright colors in their handcrafts – like embroidery, folk art, glass and crystals,” Sarah describes. On the runway, look for printed cottons, bright embroidery, hand-painted glass buttons and jewelry by Boston designer Magdalena Stokalska. “One of the main reasons I became a designer is because I love the fast-paced, ever changing aspect of it,” Sarah says. “There is always something waiting to be tried. Most of all I love the look on a person’s face when she tries on one of my pieces and absolutely loves it. That melts my hear t.” Yellow Clover is available at boutiques throughout the countr y. yellow-clover.com

Storytelling on the Runway “My work is quite experimental,” says Jonathan Joseph Peters. “I take chances on colors, textile combinations and processing my fabrics.” Jonathan, who finished in the top six on season seven of Project Runway and is now the creative director and vice president of brand development for StyleWeek, has been sewing all his life. “My mother taught me the mechanics of sewing,” he explains, “and my curiosity was piqued. I became fascinated with the geometry associated with apparel design – the way shapes fit together to create certain silhouettes and to tell a story.” His Spring/Summer 2013 collection, he says, “began with an obsession over an organic floral print I found while fabric shopping. From there was born a color story centered on the more youthful and humorous colors in the print.” Expect to see lots of aqua and saffron yellow punctuating his street wear and layered swimsuit looks on the runway. “Regardless of season or trend, there is always romance in my work, with a healthy dose of sense of humor,” Jonathan says. “I would like to thank Redken for generously sponsoring my collection, Rosanna Or tiz Sinel for being an undying support to my creative career, and all my friends, family and StyleWeek family for putting up with my shenanigans.” jonathanjosephpeters.com

seed
Fashion Firsts SEED gives student designers their first taste of the runway
and will happen again on Januar y 24 during the Fall/Winter 2013 show. From hundreds of applications, 16 students were chosen to show at the 2012 SEED. The contest was hosted by The Rhode Show’s Michaela Johnson, and judged by a panel of high-level industr y exper ts including fashion bloggers, beauty professionals and television personalities. Unlike traditional StyleWeek runway shows, SEED focuses on the ar t of avantgarde fashion. “We didn’t want it to be conventional. We didn’t want it to be ready-to-wear,” Rosanna says. “We wanted to see ar t. SEED will always be a little more ar tistic, and more of what the students see their design aesthetic to be. It has nothing to do with sellability.” To that end, the designers are given critera for their work. The 2012 SEED competition – which showcased work from the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, Lassell College, the Massachusetts College of Ar t, the Boston School of Fashion Design and the University of Rhode Island – required students to use recycled and repurposed materials. The winner, Kwong Hui Yee from MassAr t, fashioned a cocktail dress out of rope, clothespins and a mop. “It’s really more about their character of design,” Rosanna says. “What are they thinking? How can they use their creativity? How can they use that in a runway setting? If you think about it, this is our team’s ever yday life, but prepping for a runway show is a lot of work.” Yee won a cash prize and the oppor tunity to show her work at an upcoming StyleWeek. Another competitor from the 2012 SEED, Hope Macdonald, has a runway show in August’s Spring/Summer 2012 event. “We approached Hope,” Rosanna says. “We saw her show at RISD in May. She’s so ahead of the curve: her technical ability, her color blocking and her mixed media techniques are at the level you see in an established designer. She’s really precise in her designs. That’s why she’s showing on closing night.” Applications are currently being accepted for the 2013 SEED competition. styleweeknortheast.com/seed

StyleWeek is all about emerging talent. But SEED, the student designer competition presented by Swarovski at the Januar y 2012 event, showcases even earlier work. “I really wanted to incorporate student designers in StyleWeek, to give them the oppor tunity to compete and have their own runway show in StyleWeek Nor theast,” explains SWNE President Rosanna Or tiz Sinel. “But I wanted it to be students all over the region, not just from Providence.” The annual event launched earlier this year, at the Fall/Winter 2012 StyleWeek,

LOOK ONE: A Bold Lip When wearing a deep bold lip, keep everything else soft. Caroline’s beautiful bone structure is highlighted with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, and her lips are done with Armour Beauty Lip Gloss in After Hours. Creating a full brow will always make you look younger and less like you are in costume.
LOOK TWO: A Pretty Flush Whenever you feel tired or simply lackluster, add a wash of a bright cheek color like Laura Mercier Lush Nectarine high on the apples of the cheeks. Keep the eyes soft: use Laura Mercier Crème Metallic in Gold on the lid and two coats of Yves Saint Laurent Mascara. The lips are neutral and pretty with Armour Beauty Lip Gloss in Ann Margaret.

Studio 101 launched by Jason Dolan
is the newest salon to hit Providence. Jason didn’t become one of New York City’s most sought after colorists by accident. The RI-native and 15-year veteran of the world-class color team at Bergdorf Goodman’s John Barrett Salon has built an impeccable reputation over the course of his career, most recently gaining critical acclaim for his work in cutting-edge color techniques such as ombre and ballyage. Since entering the New York City scene Jason has worked diligently to build his enviable client roster, which includes a who’s who of actors and actresses, models, fashion editors and media personalities. His talents have brought him from the runways of New York City’s Fashion Week and America’s Next Top Model to the pages of Allure Magazine, and everywhere in between. Several years ago, after closely evaluating the current style landscape in his hometown, Jason made the decision to begin
making bi-monthly appearances at a downtown Providence salon. The idea was to bring a bit of New York City flavor to the folks back home. It didn’t take long for the news to spread and Jason began booking weeks and months in advance and made the choice to up his visits to every four weeks. As much as he loved making these appearances, the desire to create something of his own in the town where he was born and raised intensified. Fast-forward two years and Studio 101 is born – the preeminent hair salon experience located in the heart of downtown Providence. It only takes one step inside the space to evoke a visceral feeling of chic New York City décor and modern luxury. Offering an array of style and color services, Studio 101 brings an entirely new element to the flourishing downtown scene. Jason and his expert team of stylists and colorists (including several of his New York City peers) look forward to serving you and becoming your new trusted source for all things beauty in Rhode Island.
