A Fashionable Affair Welcome to StyleWeek! I’m so excited to debut the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of our amazingly talented designers. This is our sixth StyleWeek, and I truly believe it’s our best one yet. Over the past three years, we’ve shown the work of over 40 emerging designers. While we’re always thrilled to highlight Rhode Island’s talent, this season, half of our new designers are from Boston and New York. January’s StyleWeek is always special to me because it has two unique events that only happen once a year. Red on the Runway, a StyleWeek challenge and fundraiser for the American Hear t Association, is a runway show featuring StyleWeek designs worn by survivors of hear t disease (this year including my father, Mar tin Or tiz). SEED, our student designer competition, is happening for the second time this year, complete with celebrity judges. We’ve also got a big surprise happening during a runway show on Tuesday, January 29. You’ll have to wait and see what that one is.

abernethy From Light to Dark Jess Abernethy is a familiar face on the StyleWeek scene. Her runway show opens January’s event, and she has participated in every StyleWeek since its inception. “I love seeing people in something that I have created, seeing them happy, comfortable and looking great,” she says. Though Jess’ aesthetic is rooted in vintage inspiration – she’s particularly fond of the first half of the 20th century – her Fall/Winter 2013 collection looks to the future. “This show will be darker than any other I have done,” Jess says. “The inspiration is a kind of a mash-up of William Gibson’s high tech sci-fi future and Mad Max.” Expect to see a lot of versatile separates that can be mixed and matched (as Jess says, they are “simple pieces to go with more extravagant ones”) in fabrics ranging from cashmere to cotton. A graduate of the Munich campus of ESMOD, the esteemed French design school, she isn’t afraid to get creative in her upcoming collection. “It’s the world of the future,” Jess says. “You take what you can get, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look spectacular.” Jess Abernethy designs are available at Lola in Providence and by custom order. DESIGNER PROFILE

Yellow Clover A Flair for the Dramatic “I love to travel and learn about different cultures,” says Sarah Prost, designer of Yellow Clover. Her designs are often inspired by those passions. For her new collection, Sarah has drawn from ancient forms of Persian theatre: shadow plays and opera. “I was inspired by Persian shadow opera mainly because the music is so enchanting – old stories of heroes, love and sacrifice,” she explains. “Even though most of it is in Farsi, I felt like the strength in their voices allowed me to follow them through their stories. Shadows and darkness are so incredibly intriguing to me. I love mystery and suspense and when combined with powerful music the most wonderful dreams began to float around in my head.” Sarah has applied that theatrical touch to her Fall/Winter 2013 collection. “Expect a dramatic collection pushing the boundaries between lingerie and ready to wear,” says the graduate of Canada’s Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design. Other dramatic Persian influences – like bold prints, ink blocking, tapestry art and basic black and white – will be balanced by Yellow Clover’s signature touches, like Sarah’s precise detail work and hidden, added embellishments. As Sarah says, “There is always something waiting to be tried.” Yellow Clover is available at boutiques throughout the country. Yellow-Clover.com

MARCEL PLANTE

Pushing the Envelope “I don’t want to confine myself and say I’m a womenswear or menswear designer,” explains Marcel Plante. “With each new season, I prefer to exhibit a collection that completely departs from the last. Last season I did androgyny. I will always reference it, but I’m done with that look for now. I want each new collection to give an exciting, dramatic visual display.” The recent MassArt graduate has drawn inspiration from costumes and period garments for his entire life, working in theatre for many years. “A constant source of material comes from past decades, forgotten sub-cultures and the eccentric personalities who came before us,” Marcel says. “The detailing and construction of period clothes are exquisite, and I try to give the same uniqueness to my own garments so people will stop and admire all the work that goes into a piece.” For his second StyleWeek collection, Marcel is channeling a 1950s fetish aesthetic. “The collection includes both formal pieces and sophisticated separates that can be worn for day,” he says. Expect “Lots of leather and fur, along with gold foil stenciling and cord work.” Marcel Plante clothing is available through custom order. MarcelPlante.com

Style

With Heart

On Monday, January 28, StyleWeek clears the runway for a different kind of fashion show. Red on the Runway: A StyleWeek Challenge is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association and is unlike any other event. On this night, StyleWeek designers create red-hued cocktail attire in support of heart disease awareness, and the looks are modeled by real people affected by the disease. For the first time this year, both men (dressed by Marc Allen Fine Clothiers) and women (dressed by StyleWeek designers) will be models in the show. A panel of judges will pick their favorite style, and the winning designer receives a cash prize. The rest of the proceeds to go fund the good work of the American Heart Association. Tickets available at StyleWeekNortheast.com. AmericanHeart.org

Stephanie Kolanko Polished Femininity “The travel bug has always been in my blood,” Stephanie Kolanko says. “I love absorbing all the different ways people express themselves. I constantly search for new inspiration and my observations run over into my work.” A recent graduate from the Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design program at the University of Rhode Island, Stephanie is showing her second collection at StyleWeek this January. “My girl wants to convey an effor tlessly chic, polished look during the fall/winter season,” she explains. “In my sophomore collection, I will be expanding the foundations already seeded,” in her first collection. “I want the show to have the same vibe as the last: a fun feminine edge, but with a darker color palette and more texture.” For Fall/ Winter 2013, Stephanie will present a floral theme carried out through interesting textural pairings. Expect to see velvet, faux fur, studs. “It’s feminine, with a luxe edge,” she says. Because she draws her inspiration from so many places (she studied photography, fashion and floral design, among other artistic pursuits), Stephanie takes a broad view in how she envisions her work. “I want my pieces to be versatile for all,” she says. KARA

WICKMAN A Hidden Meaning “I’m always trying to come up with more and more pieces for the woman on the go,” Kara Wickman says. “She’s who I design for.” The mother of two is always looking for ways to meld fashion and function. For her Fall/Winter 2013 collection, she’s focusing more on the signature look of her first designs: corsetry. “I’m really passionate about functional corsets - something you can wear under a blazer with a skir t to the office,” Kara says. “I just love making them. They flatter a woman’s body. They just hug your curves and force you to sit up and have good posture. You feel more powerful in a corset.” Unlike the complicated, lace-up corsetry of old, Kara’s designs feel modern and wearable. “I think it’s ageless – a girl in her 20s can go out at night in a corset and jeans, and a professional woman could wear it with slacks to the office and feel a little sassy underneath,” she explains. “A well made corset can just change your whole wardrobe.” For her runway show, expect to see unexpected juxtapositions of fabric and design, especially luxe winter brocade and velvet. “I don’t want to give it all away,” she says. “There are going to be a couple of little twists in there as well.” Kara’s clothing is available by custom order. KENT

STETSON It’s in the Bag Kent Stetson makes more than handbags – he makes wearable art. His most recognizable works are the clutches made from digital prints of his ar twork and photography, screened onto canvas and embellished with everything from plastic bacon (really) to toy cars. “Spirit, bravery, intelligence, curiosity, humor and capacity for achievement are the human traits for which I try to design,” Kent says. “I like to think that the range for possibilities is constantly expanding for me. I like to wake up every day and think, what am I going to make today?” The New Hampshire native, who now calls Providence home, has been designing bags under his eponymous label for a

decade. His January runway show kicks off his tenth anniversary collection. “It is going to reference some of the things that have resonated for me along the way,” Kent says. “Ultimately, this runway show is my way of thanking the people who have helped me to get to the point where I can do exactly what I was born to do.” In true artistic form, Kent promises some surprises: “The goal of this show is to dismantle any distinctions between fashion shows and performance theater. The designs are not ‘merchandise,’ the audience is not ‘the consumer’ - rather, we are going to share an experience.” Kent Stetson bags are available in the Accessory Showcase in L’Apogee, by private appointment, and at regional art shows and festivals. SEED: A StyleWeek Student Designer Competition takes that one step fur ther. Once More, with Feeling Fashion designer and fabric artist Maria Del Carmen Mercado draws her inspiration from all around her, especially from other people and how they interact. Those observations directly inform her new collection, Sweet Emotion.“This collection represents the massive amounts of emotions that we as humans often have, good or bad,” she says. Before the runway shows on Thursday, January 31, Maria will be showing her installation in L’Apogee, outside the Grand Ballroom at the Biltmore. A smaller scale show, the installation features models in tableau wearing clothing from Sweet Emotion, the new Maria Del Carmen Mercado collection. “For so many reasons we often hide our feelings and don’t even know it. With this collection, I want to encourage my customers to think out of the box and dare to be different.” Expect creative fabric manipulations paired with bold, bright colors and strong shapes. Maria’s clothing is available at Lola in Providence, her etsy shop and by private commission. MariaDelCarmenMercado.com

SUSAN TROY A Story of Nature When looking for inspiration, Susan Troy doesn’t turn to fashion magazines: she simply observes the world around her and creates clothing from what she finds – from art, nature, history, urban decay. For her Fall/Winter 2013 collection, Susan explains, she let the season inform her designs. “My inspirations for this collection are photographs I took of winter wildflowers and weeds that have endured prolonged weather – raw textures, organic shapes and neutral colors,” she says. “Sprinkled on this canvas of gray and brown are spots of red: brick, carmine, cardinal, burgundy.” A lot of what inspires her, she says, is juxtaposing textures. For this season, Susan’s second StyleWeek runway show, she says, “This collection is one of simple silhouettes, but the fabrics themselves tell a story.” Expect to see, “Winter tree imagery on cigarette pants in cotton sateen, reverse hand appliqué of wool suiting fabrics and silk organza used to create a contemporary jacket with a hint of nostalgia of winters gone by, and hand-dyed modern fibers.” Just as Susan’s designs are inspired by nature, they are also respectful of it, using ecofriendly materials like bamboo fleece, cotton, soy and modal. As she explains it, “My clothing is modern, thoughtful and sustainable.” Susan’s clothing is available through custom order. SusanTroy.Wordpress.com. Facebook: Susan Troy Designs

DESIGNER PROFILE

Selahdor Urban Architecture You might say that David Chum, the designer of Selahdor, has some artistic talent. After all, he taught himself how to design four years ago when launching his line. “I was showing my artwork in Italy and New York after college,” he explains. “There came a point where I was just bored with it. Fashion design was always an interest, so I star ted studying pattern drafting textbooks and launched Selahdor with a collection for Autumn/Winter 2009.” Those who have been to StyleWeek before will recognize Selahdor’s characteristic sleek, architectural tailoring. “I’d like to think of my work as classic, but with a slight fashion forward sensibility,” David says. For Fall/Winter 2013, he’ll be showing the second collection from Selahdor’s Auryn series, inspired by the film The Neverending Story. The movie’s villain, The Nothing, is the collection’s main inspiration. “I was forced with the challenge of keeping the collection within my framework and language,” he describes. “It was very tempting to emphasize the dark, destructive energy through deconstruction, but that’s not what Selahdor is. The audience can expect a darker, casual, urban aesthetic with our trademark tailoring on the runway this season.” Selahdor is available through private order. MEN It’s Not in the Name Despite its name, MEN is clothing designed by women, for women. Masha Davydova (from Russia), Emily Shaw (from New Jersey) and Natalia Burakowsa (from Poland) are apparel students at the Rhode Island School of Design, and are making their StyleWeek debut this January. “Because MEN is the brain child of three different ladies, the work is definitely multi-faceted,” Natalia says. “We all appreciate the relationship between comfort and sensuality, and have a huge obsession with small details. Art history is also a big passion amongst the three of us, so historical references as inspirations are very evident.” In fact, MEN’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection is inspired by early Modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse. “We’ve taken aspects of their paintings,” Natalia explains, “but we also dug a little deeper and created a love story between a fictional woman in the present day falling in love with a young Picasso. Romance and a dark whimsy works their way into the clothes in details, silhouettes and fabrication. Our collection is going to be sophisticated and extremely wearable but with a huge dash of sex appeal snuck in.” MEN is available by custom order. Contact them at WomenByMen@gmail.com

Makeup “A smoky eye will never go out of style, but it’s always trying to reinvent itself. This one was done with metallics. I was inspired by Jillian Banta’s show – I’m doing a metallic smoky eye for that. I used a combination of cream and powder shadow to create a true metallic effect. When you’re doing something that jazzy on the eye, you want to keep everything else subtle. As opposed to the glossy nude lip of past seasons, we went with a matte lip for this to really complement the shiny eye.” –Jessica Berndt, Director of Makeup Styling

Hair “I took a lot of inspiration from late ‘70s/early ‘80s glam rock. I tried to make it a little more sophisticated with the curls. It takes away that punk edge of the Mohawk shape and creates a softer, more feminine silhouette. It’s very easy to style, and something that will last all night long. It’s a little bit of a risk, but it still looks feminine and beautiful.” –Lulu Locks, Director of Hair Installations

Jillian Banta A Planted SEED Jillian Banta might be showing her first collection at January StyleWeek, but she’s no newcomer to the runway. The recent grad from URI’s Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Program participated in the inaugural SEED Student Designer Competition last January. She has also participated in several design workshops in London and Paris, and that influence translates into her work. “I’ve had a passion for design and styling for as long as I can remember,” Jillian says. “It felt like a natural progression from hobby to career.” For her Fall/Winter 2013 collection, “I’ve employed a lot of embellishments and beading, as well as Swarovski crystal elements,” she describes. Those who see her runway show should expect a rich palette of mustard, deep orange and charcoal gray, and to see leather work as well. “It’s feminine with a kick,” Jillian says. “The woman that wears my clothing is fashion-forward, confident and appreciates fine craftsmanship. My clothing is very wearable, but always contains unexpected and unique elements.” To order Jillian’s clothing, contact JillianBanta@gmail.com

Millie Bautista A Unique Aesthetic “I learned from my father that the beauty of tailoring is in its ability to make fabric mold to your liking,” Millie Bautista says. “I love the precision and angularity of it, and the freedom it provides to explore new proportions.” In learning to design, Millie had two mentors: her father, a tailor by trade who taught her to sew, and Alvin Paige, a sculptor who encouraged her to study art and fashion. Now, the MassArt graduate designs handbags for Brahmin and regularly shows at Boston Fashion Week. She is making her StyleWeek debut with her Fall/Winter 2013 collection, which emphasizes structure. Millie’s two inspirations for the show are origami artist Robert J. Lang, and Pythagoras’ Golden Ratio, which explains the naturally occurring symmetries in nature. “I make demi-couture pieces, which are timeless and unique,” she says. “I’m aesthetically drawing from sculptural shapes, while incorporating heavy embellishment and always providing the perfect fit.” Expect to see refined, minimalistic ready-to-wear pieces in leather and airy sheer fabrics. Though structure and precision are paramount to her designs, Millie says, “My designs are suited for the woman who is elegant, wonderfully fun and a little bit different. Confident and daring, she loves to wear clothes that show she is unconventional and powerful.” For custom work, contact MillieBautista@ gmail.com. MillieBautista.com

DESIGNER PROFILE

Chances R Designs Fashion with Purpose Toni Lyn Spaziano is a lot more than just a fashion designer – among other things, she’s also a passionate advocate and fundraiser for disabled children. Her line, Chances R Designs, is named after a little person named Chance who inspired Toni to work past her own fears and take the chance to follow her dreams. (A portion of the proceeds from Chances R go to Team Chance, which funds a summer camp for disabled kids.) Toni’s Fall/Winter 2013 show will be her third at StyleWeek, having debuted her line at last January’s event. “This show will be a lot more luxe,” she says. “This season Chances R Designs is combining high-end leathers with signature tweeds and bouclés for an edgy-meets-sophisticated juxtaposition.” Expect to see a balance of Toni’s classic, polished looks and a rock and roll edge: blacks and browns will be offset by soft peach and blush tones. Chances R Designs are already available at boutiques along the East Coast, but this spring, Toni’s clothing will also be available in California. It’s exciting not only professionally, but because that’s the place Chance himself calls home. ChancesRDesigns.com

NICK PINI A Beautiful Introduction Some designers create color stories for their collections. Nick Pini creates entire story lines to inspire his fashion. A recent graduate of MassAr t in Boston, Nick got his first taste of apparel sketching in high school. “From there it became my favorite thing to do,” he says, “Creating beautiful people with beautiful clothes and beautiful lives. I like to make up stories about who I’m designing for. My inspiration comes from growing up and learning about myself and the world around me.” For his debut runway collection at StyleWeek, the story doesn’t disappoint. Nick describes his models as “socialite biker chicks.” He explains, “I came up with this story about a girl who rides out to the middle of the deser t on the back of her boyfriend’s bike. The two of them get in a fight and he leaves her there. Stranded, and just as she star ts to lose hope of surviving, a group of glittering, spike and stud-wearing biker chicks pull up and make her a par t of their gang.” To complete the looks, Nick is using the rough-edged glamour of Providence-designed House of Cach jewelry. He promises, “They have quite a few surprises in store.” Nick’s designs are available through custom order. Contact NDPini@gmail.com.

Liz Bang A Colorful Addition For Liz Bang, design has held lifelong appeal. As a little girl,” she says, “I would easily get bored doing the same chores or practicing the same classical sheet music over and over again. But, something about constant change and evolution in art and fashion was challenging and really intriguing.” Liz lived in Korea and Hong Kong before landing at the Rhode Island School of Design to study apparel. She channels that worldliness into her clothing. “I am inspired by many different things,” she explains, “Cultures, lifestyles, friends, fabrics and meeting new people.” Now, Liz lives in New York and is making her StyleWeek debut. For this collection, she says, “My inspiration and color palette originates from tropical flowers.” Her Fall/Winter 2013 collection will use black as an anchor for bright, tropical accent colors – what she calls a “polished, urbane fall and winter look.” It’s also a departure for Liz’s signature style. “It will be the most colorful collection for me yet!” Liz Bang clothing is available for private commission. JONATHAN

JOSEPH PETERS A Strong Forward View

Longtime favorite Jonathan Joseph Peters will once again bring his signature mix of wearable, avant garde fashion to StyleWeek, showing his collection during the closing Saturday night event. For his January show, Jonathan will be collaborating with local artist Phil Shaw, who is designing prints for the collection. “The clothing will honor my nod to romanticism while embracing a strong forward view,” he says. Since appearing in season seven of Project Runway, Jonathan has shown new collections every year, including at New York Fashion Week, StyleWeek, Portland Fashion Week and StyleWeek Resor t in Miami. He also works to promote emerging designers through StyleWeek PR. “My work is still quite experimental,” he says. “I take chances on colors, textile combinations and processing my fabrics.” All of Jonathan’s work is infused with imagination and humor, and his Fall/Winter 2013 show will be no different. Expect to see colorful fabrics, unusual combinations and versatile separates. “I picture these clothes to be worn by a colorful she-spy character,” he says. “She is spirited and humorous, but with a lethal undercurrent.” Jonathan’s clothing is now available for purchase on his website. Makeup “Dark lips were huge last fall, and I don’t think they’re going anywhere – if anything, they’re going to get more intense. This is a really deep burgundy lip. On the eye, we kept everything soft – just some definition around her lash line, and not a lot of eye shadow. You’re seeing her features, not the makeup surrounding them. A dark lip gives a vintage feel with a bit of a modern edge.” –Jessica Berndt, Director of Makeup Styling

The Stable welcomes STYLEWEEK to Providence January 27- February 2, 2013

Hair “When it comes to hair or makeup, it’s definitely a game of balance. By pairing the vintage suicide roll in the front with beachy waves through the length, you’re able to try something new while still feeling like yourself. It doesn’t feel costumey, it just brings in some beauty and classic styling. A touch of vintage inspiration makes you feel fashion forward with a little tip of the hat to the past.” –Lulu Locks, Director of Hair Installations

101 Orange Street Providence, RI 401.808.6777 www.studio101ri.com

Studio 101 launched by Jason Dolan

is the newest salon to hit Providence. Jason didn’t become one of New York City’s most sought after colorists by accident. The RI-native and 15-year veteran of the world-class color team at Bergdorf Goodman’s John Barrett Salon has built an impeccable reputation over the course of his career, most recently gaining critical acclaim for his work in cutting-edge color techniques such as ombre and ballyage. Since entering the New York City scene Jason has worked diligently to build his enviable client roster, which includes a who’s who of actors and actresses, models, fashion editors and media personalities. His talents have brought him from the runways of New York City’s Fashion Week and America’s Next Top Model to the pages of Allure Magazine, and everywhere in between. Several years ago, after closely evaluating the current style landscape in his hometown, Jason made the decision to begin

making bi-monthly appearances at a downtown Providence salon. The idea was to bring a bit of New York City flavor to the folks back home. It didn’t take long for the news to spread and Jason began booking weeks and months in advance and made the choice to up his visits to every four weeks. As much as he loved making these appearances, the desire to create something of his own in the town where he was born and raised intensified. Fast-forward two years and Studio 101 is born – the preeminent hair salon experience located in the heart of downtown Providence. It only takes one step inside the space to evoke a visceral feeling of chic New York City décor and modern luxury. Offering an array of style and color services, Studio 101 brings an entirely new element to the flourishing downtown scene. Jason and his expert team of stylists and colorists (including several of his New York City peers) look forward to serving you and becoming your new trusted source for all things beauty in Rhode Island.
