Artist Helen Roy with her acrylic on wood piece, Watch Hill Sky, on display at the newly repurposed Westerly Train Station

TRANSPORT YOURSELF THROUGH ART The Westerly Train Station reopens as an art gallery No longer are travelers confined to peeking through the windows of a shuttered Westerly Train Station or just admiring its exterior Spanish design with clay roof tiles, cream-colored stucco and red-brick façade, and series of curved arches supported by columns. Now, the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly (ACGW) has transformed the former depot into a warm, inviting space – ready to transport visitors through the visual arts. The train station’s ornate, two-story building is now filled with ever-changing paintings, photography and prints of landscapes, seascapes, and people, as well as mixed-media art, hand-thrown ceramics, metal sculptures, jewelry, encaustics, collages, and books by ACGW’s members and visiting artists. On the first Friday of every month, they have new show openings with an artist meet and greet, plus wine. Since opening in August 2018, the feedback from the community has

been extremely positive, and many repeat visitors come and bring their friends, shares ACGW President Arlene Piacquadio. “People walk in and they just go ‘Wow.’ It’s like, ‘I don’t know where to look first, but I can’t wait to wander around.’” While the ACGW’s other home at the United Theatre undergoes a fundraising campaign and reconstruction, it has relocated to the train station with a two-year license from the State of Rhode Island’s Department of Transportation. Hoping to renew their license for another five years, Piacquadio says laughing, “We’d love to stay forever… We’d like to be back at the United Theatre and also stay here.” Visit WesterlyArts.com for more information about upcoming events, including shows, demonstrations, classes, and workshops. -Jan Tormay

The Scoop | so & so

No two blankets are alike, even if they share the same pattern

Take Cover When the population of wool textile mills in New England took a plunge in the mid2000s, causing the value of wool to drop with it, 19 local sheep farmers of the Rhode Island Sheep Cooperative decided to make the most of an unfortunate situation. Seeking local use of their raw wool, the co-op approached the RI Resource Conservation and Development Council to investigate their options, soon receiving a grant from the RC&D to steer their project forward. The committee – made up of representatives from the RI Sheep Cooperative, RI Resource Conservation and Development Council, URI, USDA-NRCS, and private citizens – made it their goal to produce wool blankets by the fall of each year to sell during the holiday season. The blanket-making process starts and ends in the Ocean State, and looks like

14

SORhodeIsland.com • March 2019

this: First, wool is collected from co-op producers and farmers and inspected for proper length, any breakage, hay, or wood shavings. The approved, high-quality wool is then separated by darks and lights and is shipped down to South Carolina for cleaning and processing before returning to nearby Massachusetts for spinning and weaving. Once woven, the wool returns to Rhode Island for fulling, napping, cutting, labeling, and packaging. Since its start in 2006, over 2,000 Rhody Warm blankets have been produced with contributions from over 125 wool producers. Just like its blankets, the co-op has woven itself into the fabric of Rhode Island’s agriculture. Profits from the blankets have brought income to farmers who may not have otherwise seen profit when waste wool was seen as a nuisance.

Rhody Warm co-chair Robin Meek shares that the project’s long-term goal has always been “to make wool a valued product because it was undervalued when we started,” adding that so far, they’ve been successful. No two Rhody Warm blankets are alike, even if they’re composed of the same pattern, like gingham or plaid. They are made in a variety of sizes ranging from a basic lap throw to a king-sized bedspread. Meek recommends ordering online ahead of time before the limited material runs out. And the best part – proceeds help provide funding for local 4-H sheep programs, scholarships, donations to local organizations, and additional co-op programming. Now that’s something that’ll warm both your body and heart. RISheep.org/RhodyWarmWoolBlankets -Caroline Boyle

At a time when big-box stores have shuttered so many neighborhood businesses, the growth of Jerry’s Hardware in Narragansett is inspiring. The Jerry’s story began over 70 years ago when Gennaro “Jerry” Ferraro opened

a painting and contracting business. “My grandfather’s truck would start at one end of Ocean Road on Labor Day and land at the other end by Memorial Day,” explains third-generation owner Rob Ferraro. “Then it would start all

CROWNS over again.” The first retail outpost was in Peace Dale before moving to The Pier. After weathering some tough economic times operating out of Jerry’s garage, the store moved to Boon Street. Then, in 1972 it moved to Point Judith Road. “Back then, Point Judith Road was a cart-path. There was nothing here. Everyone told my grandfather he was crazy.” Grandpa Jerry’s crazy idea turned out to be prescient, with Point Judith Road now the gateway to Narragansett’s popular beaches and the main thoroughfare in and out of town. Ferraro purchased the empty lot two doors down from their location three years ago with an eye towards expansion. With the 2017 closure of Benny’s, the timing was right to push forward. He plans to stock some items that were Benny’s staples, adding “but no toys, yet,” much to the chagrin of his three young boys. The retail space will expand to 9,000 square feet, giving them ample room for the 37,000 items that they currently stock. “We like to buy,” Ferraro says with a shrug. The new store, with its soaring ceilings, exposed post-and-beam framing, and white washed woodworking, has a New England coastal vibe with a modern edge. The open space is a significant change from their tightly packed ‘70s location. Fans of Jerry’s overstuffed basement take note: the new one will be home to a plumbing department and an expanded paint center. After seven decades, Jerry’s is a touchpoint for the Narragansett community and Ferraro can’t imagine doing business anyplace else. “There’s nothing like the people of Narragansett. Our customers, our staff, they are the reason we get up in the morning.” Jerrys-Paint-And-Hardware.Business.site -Karen Greco

Paul Pelletier can’t tell you exactly why he was so drawn to the violin, but he says the first time he was handed one he “melted.”

That was the beginning of a 74-year love affair with the instrument and music itself. Pelletier, a Rhode Island native, was just

Photography by Marylouu Butler

Originally from Westerly, returning home to practice

11 when he began private lessons. By 14, he was playing at weddings. He jokes that anyone can learn to play the violin in one lesson... and about 25,000 hours of practice. Those 25,000-plus hours of practice have given him a repertoire of over 2,000 songs. Classical certainly, but also big band, opera and show tunes, German and Italian music, and even Elvis. Over the years, he has played for various venues and events, including as a strolling violinist, with the highlight being a Pavarotti concert. Pelletier says that he is a sensitive person. But it is that sensitivity and intuition that allows him to “read” the crowd and adapt accordingly. One time, at a blacktie event, a gust of wind pulled his bow out of his hand. Luckily, he was able to grab it before it fell. “I was looking at all these people looking at me and wondering what I could play next to recover,” he said. So, he played “Wind Beneath My Wings” and the audience cracked up. It is his quiet humor and mischievous glimmer in his eyes that endears him to his listeners. Pelletier has tendonitis in his hands, but he says that the pain disappears the moment he starts playing. And that is what he hopes to do by playing for people in nursing homes, hospitals, and Alzheimer’s units: Change their mood and take their worries away for a short period of time. Although applause and compliments are nice, he enjoys it most when he forgets about the technical aspect of playing and the music just flows from his heart and soul. Pelletier’s love of music and people have given him a rewarding life – “May these melodies bring you warmth, serenity, and healing,” he imparts. For all events, large or small, contact Pelletier at 401-788-0090 – and yes, he can play “What a Wonderful World.” -Marylou Butler

The Scoop | so & so

Hamilton has a few Rhode Island connections, including an essay contest and scholarship

Don’t Throw Away Your Shot!

Photo by Joan Marcus courtesy of PPAC

Hamilton has Rhode Islanders fired up Whether you’re a theater buff or not, you’ve likely heard the buzz around Hamilton: An American Musical, the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton told through the eyes of rap and hip hop. It took America by storm in 2015 and 2016, when it won 11 (yes, 11) Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. Nobody could get tickets to Hamilton; even Beyoncé and Jay-Z had to wait a few days to see the show. Because of all this excitement, and the fact that Hamilton has been used by teachers all over the country to explain the Revolutionary War and subsequent building of our nation, one of the musical’s biggest audiences is high school children. Numerous schools in New York City participated in a program called “The Hamilton Project” (nicknamed EduHam) in which 20,000 eleventh grade students saw the play – that’s one out of every four high school juniors in NYC. Rhode Island is getting its own high school Hamilton push with the “Write Your Way to Hamilton” essay contest, sponsored by the Newport Historical Society, in which tenth graders across the state

can write an essay in response to the prompt: “What is happening now in your community, or what could be happening, that has the power to change the future in Rhode Island and potentially the world?” Entrants have the chance to win tickets to see a spring performance of Hamilton with their teachers as chaperones. Papers are due on March 15 and the winners will be announced (from each county in Rhode Island) on April 5. If you’re not in tenth grade, but still want to see the show, fear not: Hamilton is coming to PPAC. Set for a summer performance, tickets have yet to go on sale to the general public, and the date they start selling has also yet to be announced, but according to the Box Office, they expect to begin selling tickets in late spring for the July/August performances. Tickets were included as part of PPAC’s Encore Series, an extension of the Broadway Series. If you want to see Hamilton without traveling out of state, you’d better start checking PPAC’s website daily once the ice begins to thaw because tickets will sell out in a snap. The Scoop | so & so

The creator and now super-star of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has received international attention for the show. The awards are endless: a Pulitzer prize, a MacArthur Genius Grant, and... a scholarship at Rhode Island College? The Miranda family recently launched a scholarship at RIC for first generation, underrepresented theater students. Applicants have the chance to win two years worth of aid, up to $10,000. The Mirandas felt that RIC was the right choice because of the college’s long-running tradition of excellence in musical theater and affordability and accessibility. “It’s challenging to find a pathway to a career in the performing arts when you don’t see yourself represented on that stage,” says Lin-Manuel. “That’s why it’s so important to create opportunities for students who are typically underrepresented in the arts. Rhode Island College is the right place to do this because of its track record of promoting top artistic talent in its music, theater, and dance programs while making quality arts education attainable for students from all backgrounds.”

Rise up to the chance at seeing Hamilton

All applicants must be full-time students, maintain a GPA of at least 2.5, participate in a live interview and audition, and write a letter citing what makes them the perfect candidate to receive the award and their post-grad aspirations. One of the recipients of the scholarship this year is not only a first-generation college student, but also a first-generation American. She is also the only woman to win the scholarship. Senior theater major Andrea Vargas of Riverside was touched when she found out she’d been selected. “Lin sent us a special message and, let me tell you, I was so emotional and excited to see his face up on that screen!” she says. “My mom reminded me after the meeting that where I was sitting when I found out I got the scholarship was the same area I was sitting in when I was 5-years-old, watching The Sound of Music with her, and I turned to her and I said: ‘Mommy, someday, I’m going to do that!’ and I pointed at the actress playing Maria. It was a special moment to be there 16 years later, receiving a scholarship from the Miranda Family.” -Alyssa Anderson

Willywaw and Light Forge Studio We are pleased to introduce Rhody Gem, a new monthly column in SO Rhode Island. We’re always being thanked for spotlighting the “hidden gems” of the state, and in our ongoing efforts to leave no stone unturned, we’re putting the call out to our readership! Each month we’ll spotlight a Rhody Gem: a business, artisan, or place led to us by our faithful readers. What it is: Willywaw is the working studio and spacious showroom of artist Ashley Van Etten and her husband/photographer, Joe Beckham. Together the couple produce an array of screen-printed textiles and photographs.

Photography by Brandon Harmon

Where to find it: Housed in a light industrial building near the URI Bay Campus behind Roch’s Fresh Foods, the studio is located at 31 Sextant Lane, Narragansett, with the entrance on Celestial Drive. Look for a glass door and the large signs marking “Willywaw and Light Forge Studio” on the left side of the building. The studio keeps a seasonal schedule so visit their website for hours. What makes it a Rhody Gem? If you like one-of-a-kind items with Ocean State appeal, a visit to this local studio is a must. On-site screen-printing yields seaside-themed items like T-shirts, market totes, note cards, and more, along with Joe’s stunning photography of surf and nature.

Independent coffee shops thrive in the southern part of the state By Karen Greco Photography by Mackenzie Bremges

America may run on Dunkin', but South County residents prefer to grab their cup-of-joe from one of the many specialty coffee houses that thread through the region. “America’s history with coffee goes back to the Boston Tea Party,” explains Johnson and Wales University Professor Katrina Herold. “Drinking coffee was the patriotic thing to do. So, during revolutionary times, all these coffee shops popped up in the Boston area.” With the American Revolution fueled by caffeine, so began Americans' love affair with coffee. But it wasn’t until a century later and the advent of Starbucks that we began to take it seriously.

Dave's Coffee roasts thier own beans to ensure freshness

“Starbucks brought single origin coffee, as well its origin story, direct to the consumer,” explains Herold, who teaches a course on coffee, tea, and non-alcoholic beverages. “Now coffee is treated almost as reverentially as wine. It’s become a gastronomic experience, not just a caffeine hit.” That sentiment is echoed by Simon Olsen, general manager of Dave’s Coffee in Charlestown. “Coffee culture is starting to parallel the explosion of craft beer. Palates are expanding and consumers are beginning to understand the flavor notes. They want to taste something special.” Some outposts roast their own beans, like Dave’s Coffee and TLC Coffee Roasters in West Kingston. For the non-roasters, local partnerships rule, with the state’s top roasters creating custom blends for South County’s cafes. With the coffee house as a second career for the majority of the proprietors, they credit their relationships with local roasters for teaching them about the nuances of the beverage. “Bob at Custom House Roasters shared so much knowledge,” explains Keith Frost, owner of Higher Grounds Community Coffeehouse in Wyoming. “We could never have done this without him.” “From the beginning, I knew I wanted to keep it as close to home as possible,” says Mark LaHoud, owner of Wakefield’s Java Madness. He gets his beans from the 150-year-old Mills Coffee Roasting. “They are just as invested in the business as us.” Narragansett’s Fuel Coffee Bar owner Lynn Eglington calls Ken, the guru behind the beans at TLC Coffee Roasters, “a genius.” Downeast Coffee Roasters keeps Westerly’s Junk and Java buzzing. Wakefield’s Sweet Althea’s carries coffee from Dave’s. Sophia’s Brewhouse in Exeter gets their custom blends from Mills Coffee. Coffee purveyors are sensitive to the Fair Trade movement, but they are also wary that the designation leaves out planters who are growing their beans ethically but do not have the money to buy the Fair Trade or organic certifications. Higher Grounds Coffee Shop serves from-scratch treats to complement their coffee

“If the coffee grower has an exceptional bean, it means they are doing it right,” explains Java Madness’ LaHoud. The former manager of 1369 Coffee House in Cambridge, LaHoud is a 23-year veteran of the coffee house scene. “A responsible grower maintains their plantations without pesticides because they understand that they have to be part of the ecosystem to thrive. This makes a better product.” “I stock two Fair Trade coffees because I know that is important to my customers,” says Junk and Java’s Alexis Tattersall. “But many of these farms are operating under Fair Trade guidelines, but they simply can’t afford the designation.” At Dave’s Coffee, it’s all about the relationship between roaster and planter. “Our roaster visits the coffee bean auctions and has direct relationships with many of the growers. He looks for beans that are responsibly grown, humane, and good quality,” explains Dave’s GM Olsen. There’s more than just java brewing at these coffee houses. House-baked treats, health conscious smoothies, and more substantial breakfast and lunch items are also on the menu. “It’s a misconception that coffee houses are coffee- and tea-centric,” says LaHoud. With items like homemade hummus and gluten-free quiche on Java Madness’ menu, patrons craving more than a caffeine jolt have plenty of choices. Fuel’s Eglington, a self-described health nut, wanted healthier options as a counterpoint to sugar-laden pastries. She offers fresh fruit smoothies as well as an acai bowl that features house made granola. All breakfast sandwiches are made-to-order on the grill and Fuel offers nourishing soups and paninis for lunch. Fresh is also on the menu at Higher Grounds. Husband-and-wife team Keith and Jenn Frost own and operate the cafe with Jenn whipping up from-scratch “back to basics” baked goods. Their breakfast sandwiches feature fresh cracked eggs and their bagels come par-baked direct from New York, making them authentic NYC bagels. “First and foremost, we are a drink place,” Junk and Java’s Tattersall points out. So while their treat menu is limited, they feature an array of specialty drinks that range from healthy to downright decadent. Their health conscious “Wonder Water” is a refreshing blend of coconut water, fresh mint, and cayenne pepper. They also feature gelato creations such as sinful shakes and espresso topped ice cream. Last fall, Dave’s Coffee built on a new kitchen

Junk and Java puts the drink first and offers two Fair Trade coffees

so they could expand their food offerings. Made-to-order hot breakfast sandwiches, along with house baked treats, including scones, muffins, cookies, and sweet breads, are now on the menu. TLC Coffee Roasters and Sophie’s Brewhouse both have expansive sandwich menus for the lunch crowd. Baked goods reign at Sweet Altheas in Wakefield, which began as a custom cakery and whose scones are legendary. While there are plenty of to-go cups flying out the door, the coffee scene in South County invites customers to pull up a chair and hang out. Community is at the heart of these eclectic cafes, even if their regulars grab their usual and rush off to work. “This place is like an extension of our living room,” muses Frost. He understands that someone’s morning interaction with Higher Grounds can set the tone for their entire day. “It’s like having friends over at your house everyday,” echoes Junk and Java’s Tattersall, whose boho chic café is undergoing an expansion to add more seating. That’s more seats for their busy poetry nights and tables for the homework-focused teens. They also host “Pups and Cups,” a doggie social, on their welcoming patio during the warmer months. Fuel added on to their location last summer, giving more table space to those who want to hang out and soak up the sleek and modern surf-inspired vibe. With its soothing earth tones and comfortable seating, Sweet Althea’s offers the perfect spot for quiet contemplation. At Java Madness, weekends are given over to the local music scene, where fledgling musicians can cut their teeth. Knitting circles, book clubs, laptop warriors, and homework focused students are all at home in the funky back room. “As long as you want to be here, we’ll make space for you,” says LaHoud. The rustic charm of its historic eighteenth century building makes Dave’s a magnet for the laptop crowd. High school and college students finish papers at their tables while the regulars flow in and out on their way to work. There is also a peaceful garden area where customers go to soak up the sun or try outdoor yoga in the summer months. “I am a firm believer in the third place concept,” says LaHoud. “Coffee houses, with their egalitarian nature, are uniquely suited to be part of the triad that holds the community together.”

her background in client services, project management and media, she provides a broad-range of organizational expertise. With a degree in journalism and minor in film and media, Melanie Roberts brings her passion for writing and creative skills to the forefront of her work as Media Relations manager. She focuses on creating social media content plans, writing blog posts, PR and building relationships, which she applies internally and externally for clients. The newest addition to Team KSA, Allison Lindgren works on the global client team. Organization and attention to detail is her forte. Her work involves helping to create global toolkits for Pepsi, 7up and Lay’s campaigns, and reviewing all local submissions that include images of the talent represented. She also works on talent management to approve new designs and ideas. These images include packaging, point of sale, food service cups, out of home ads, key visuals, and any merchandise and giveaways. Lindgren’s ability to notice small details and everyday continuities, makes her an asset. About KSA Marketing + Partnerships As a full-service marketing agency, KSA MARKETING + PARTNERSHIPS works with small, medium, and large clients that need messaging and marketing across all channels. It all began back in 2010 when Katie Schibler Conn left her dream job at PlayStation, and traded her Blackberry for a backpack. “It was a life-changing,

15-month journey through Southeast Asia and South America,” Katie says. Within 48 hours of landing at T.F. Green Airport, Katie founded the KSA agency from her kitchen table after a call from Pepsi. “They called asking for help on a project. The rest is history.” Since then, the creative agency has grown into a seven-person team of “marketing heroes,” each bringing their own skill set and market knowledge that continues to shape who KSA is and what the boutique firm can do. “We treat our client relationships as partnerships,” Katie says. “We collaborate and work together to connect the dots of their marketing needs from online to offline. I’ve built a team that can efficiently work with clients both locally and globally.” KSA works with clients to create integrated marketing content -- connecting the dots of marketing communication through advertising, public relations, social media, sales promotion, and direct marketing. “This allows consumers to interact with a brand seamlessly,” Katie explains. You might think the initials KSA represent the founder’s initials, but rumor has it that KSA stands for Kick Some Ass Marketing. “We don’t deny it,” says Katie with a laugh. “Our passion and superhero mentality drive us, and we pride ourselves on our quick action in helping clients when they call us in a panic with an “oh shit” moment. We are always ready to come to the rescue.” The team takes enormous pride in their continued success, especially their work with local non-profits like Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), LIFEcycle, National GRACE Foundation, and Find Your Bold through BoldrDash Race. “We want to support environmentallyfriendly companies that are trying to do good,” Katie says, adding that the team is committed to fostering meaningful community change. “Our goal this year is to create more partnerships that matter.”

Meet The KSA Team’s Leading Lady Clients “We tip our hats to fellow trailblazers,” Katie says.” That’s why we are honored to work closely with these fellow four leading ladies, who have triumphed in typically male-dominated fields.” While all of ladies work with KSA for their branding and marketing needs, they are more than just clients, they are partners, and Team KSA is deeply committed to their success.

REBECCA TRAXLER Owner

Inspiration comes easy at OCEAN TILE GALLERY, the beautiful designer showroom Rebecca Traxler opened in Westerly in 2017. Featuring the latest trends and materials, the incredible 3,000-square-foot storefront showcases a seemingly endless collection of tile, flooring, countertops, and home accents. “My goal is to make people feel inspired in their own homes,” Rebecca says. “I want people to stay in love with their homes.” Showroom Exclusives For 2019 “There is nothing like seeing color and touching material in person. I love when customers walk in and are amazed by the

selection here, and tell me how beautiful the space is.” The designer’s showroom is literally a full-service shop: customers receive onsite consultations, select materials, discuss budget, and schedule on-site visits and expert installation. “We do it all,” Rebecca says. From backsplashes to heated floors, there isn’t a renovation project too small or too large for the team here. New exclusive tile collections, soundbearing materials, and state-of-the-art flooring are just a sampling of what’s in store this year at Ocean Tile Gallery. “I’m continuing to add hard-to-find exclusives to give our customers the best browsing and decision-making experience possible.”

“I’m really excited about the increasing popularity of COREtec, a terrific alternative for wide plank hardwood flooring.” The high-quality line offers a great variety of flooring with the realistic look of wood. Durable and waterproof, the flooring can transform basements, mudrooms, kitchens, and beyond. “It adds a very modern touch, yet a classic look and feel. COREtec is the industry’s best, and I’m thrilled to showcase this collection this year.” The showroom also offers unique home accents (like lamps and wall art), a recent addition brought on by genuine customer interest. “People would come in and want to buy the accessories we used to stage our vignettes,” she says, adding that they now have a wide selection of coastalinspired decor available to purchase. These personalized touches are what it’s all about for Rebecca, who aims to exceed her customers’ expectations. “We also do a lot commercially,” she says, adding that she knows firsthand how overwhelmed business owners can

Building Her Own Career With a determined mindset and a personal approach, Rebecca began her impressive career in flooring over 15 years ago. She continues to expand her residential and commercial portfolio at Ocean Tile Gallery and Eastern CT Flooring, her second business located in Groton, CT. “Running two businesses in two states can be challenging, but I love every minute.” Owning both businesses – coupled with her ever-increasing volume – also gives Rebecca unique access to the industry’s top manufacturers. “I’m proud to have built this company from the ground up, to have done it on my own, and to continue growing it in my own way,” Rebecca says. “The building and construction industry has been predominantly owned and run by men. It’s inspiring to know that I have had a part in changing that.” “Being a business owner has been a dream come true for me. REGINA BARTLETT Author & Wellness Influencer

Regina Bartlett wears many hats. She is an accomplished author and blogger. She is a fitness trainer. She is a marathon runner. She is a motivational speaker. But most of all, she is an inspiration. “I’m a wife, mother, avid crafter, and lover of Jesus and tiny dogs everywhere with a story to tell,” she says with a laugh. A Story To Share Regina’s story began when she took her first step on her awe-inspiring journey to wellness. “I was morbidly obese for 30 years. I never believed I could change my life,” she says. “For so many years I felt like I was alone, and that no one would understand how I was feeling about my weight. I felt trapped in my own body.” Through a gastric bypass surgery and “a whole lot of faith,” Regina was able to lose 250 pounds and achieve her lifelong dream of running the New York City Marathon. Regina chronicled her amazing transformation in her book Food, Sweat, & Fears. “I discovered that the more open I was about how I was feeling, the more I found people were just like me. We tend to isolate during times of stress, trauma or failure. I discovered that sharing my story - all of it - helped other people share their own.” “I want people to know that it doesn’t matter where you are now with your weight, or how long you’ve been here. Every single moment presents another opportunity to try again. I’m living proof.” Knowing how difficult long-term weight loss success can be, Regina continues to shares her life adventures on her blog REGINABARTLETT.COM and her Navigating Weight Loss Facebook page. “These peer-to-peer relationships are critical, especially when so many people still don’t have a thorough understanding of weight loss surgery.” Her blog and book has been read by people around the world. “It’s amazing and humbling to have people find value in what you do. It’s a privilege.” Regina is equally as passionate about creating healthy - and tasty - food that is bariatric friendly. Her mini-cookbook, Healthy Fare: Bariatric Friendly Recipes and Helpful Guides, is being expanded to a full cookbook this spring, complete with her favorite recipes made healthy. She’s also finishing up her next book, Me, My Fat, & I: A Divorce Story. “It’s about how fat becomes an identity that you are connected to, and the fear and loss of identity when you are no longer what you always thought you were. It’s powerful.”

Even if you’ve never had a weight problem, you probably have had something that has weighed you down. “It causes you to lose your focus, your way,” Regina says, adding that her weight loss story is relatable to many personal struggles. A frequent speaker at Miriam Hospital’s Center for Bariatric Surgery, her message is one of hope. “I love seeing the hope on people’s faces when they hear my story and see that there’s a way to get healthy.”

Every single moment presents another opportunity to try again. I’m living proof. A Healthy Life & Lifestyle Regina not only talks the talk on her blog, she walks the walk everyday as a fitness professional. She is the Membership Director at the Ocean Community YMCA, Arcadia Branch, as well as a fitness instructor. “I get to see the best part of my community come together to share health, wellness, and each other at the Y.” She is a licensed POUND trainer, leading cardio classes that uses lightly weighted drumsticks to music. “We have a blast! It’s so fun and high energy

that you almost forget you’re working out.” “I’m most proud of people just walking in the door. I know that feeling firsthand -- it’s the longest walk. Just getting to the gym is something to be proud of. I never take for granted that people come to my class. It can be the toughest thing they do all day.” Regina’s energy and love for live is positively contagious. She’s active in her church, where you can find her singing on the praise team. After completing her first marathon goal, she set her sights on another childhood dream: becoming a Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate. And she’s currently training for an Ironman race that includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run. Regina and her loving husband Jeff fill their empty nest from their combined family of six adult children with two very tiny, yet adorable Chihuahuas named Sid Vicious and Taxi Fitzgerald. “I’m fortunate, truly. I get to spend my days doing the things that I completely believe in, and I’m surrounded by love,” Regina says. “I get to laugh and have fun while I work. What’s better than that?”

As United Way of Rhode Island sits uniquely at the intersection of nonprofit, business, government, and community, Nicolato is energized by the diversity of ideas presented to make our communities stronger. “No matter where people stand on a particular issue, when they come to the table to find ways to help their neighbors, that is what comes before anything else,” she adds. Nicolato is quick to highlight the important, yet evolving, role philanthropy plays in United Way’s work, embracing donors’ move to want to experience the mission firsthand – and then consider making a gift. “It’s cultivating these meaningful volunteer experiences and relationships that demonstrate the cumulative impact we can all have,” she says.

CORTNEY NICOLATO President & CEO

Rhode Islanders are so passionate about helping Rhode Islanders and I see that passion each day in our community.

In September 2018, Cortney Nicolato began her role as President and CEO of UNITED WAY OF RHODE ISLAND, succeeding longtime executive Anthony Maione following his retirement. Born and raised in Pawtucket and a University of Rhode Island graduate, Cortney was recruited to Texas in 2005 to pursue her career. Following a progression of executive leadership positions with the American Heart Association, she later led the largest social services nonprofit serving aging adults in North Texas. Humbled – and excited – to come back to the Ocean State and serve the community she’s always considered home, Nicolato hit the ground running and is approaching the six-month mark of her United Way tenure. “Rhode Islanders are so passionate about helping Rhode Islanders and I see that passion each day in our community,” she says. “If we’re going to address our most pressing social issues, it’s imperative we

work together – and Rhode Islanders work best when we collaborate.” Cultivating strategic partnerships has been a theme throughout Nicolato’s career and a guiding force as she looks to build upon the impressive work being done in many areas. It is those same areas where she also sees opportunities to address issues at their root cause. Among them are identifying why 12 percent of third graders miss more than 10 percent (over 15 days) of the school year. This chronic absenteeism plays a significant role in students’ ability to learn, particularly at an age when a child’s grade-level reading proficiency is a strong indicator of future academic success and, subsequently, their career path. “We know this issue is rooted deeply in meeting children’s basic needs. We also know it will take innovative programming and policy to solve it,” says Nicolato. “For example, every Rhode Islander should be able to find a home they can afford, but that’s not the case today.”

Two groups she points to as examples are United Way’s Young Leaders Circle and its Women United affinity group. More than 1,500 members strong, YLC raises funds to send local kids to summer learning programs, while Women United members dedicate their time and resources to improving childhood literacy. “We’ve also grown the volunteer opportunities available to families and their children. There’s incredible interest in wanting to volunteer together and pass down the importance of helping others,” she says. Throughout United Way of Rhode Island’s 92-year history, seeking innovative ideas and welcoming an outside-the-box approach to solve community challenges have been instrumental in defining the organization’s legacy. And as United Way moves forward into its next chapter, Nicolato welcomes all who wish to contribute and join “our” work. Follow her on Twitter @CortneyNic, or reach her at cortney.nicolato@uwri.org.

DR. CAROLINE CHANG, MD Dermatologist Patients Come First “I put the patient first,” says board certified dermatologist Dr. Caroline Chang, owner of RHODE ISLAND DERMATOLOGY INSTITUTE. In 2018, after ten years of studying and practicing medicine within the confines of the traditional insurance based system, Dr. Chang made the leap toward opening her own unique patient-focused practice. “It’s been a dream to not only start my own business, but also treat patients in such a personalized, meaningful way,” Dr. Chang says. Rhode Island Dermatology Institute (RIDI), the first direct care dermatology practice in the state, aims to restore the doctor-patient relationship. “We provide the highest quality of care to the public without the barriers of health insurance,” Dr. Chang says, explaining that in the direct care model patients contract medical services directly with their doctor. New and existing patients can make appointments without referrals, and can typically be seen within a week. “We cut out the middle people (insurance companies). Patients are able to get the care they need, and doctors are able to provide the care they want.” An Artistic Approach An art enthusiast with a dedication for science-based medicine, Dr. Chang has a unique academic and medically trained background. “I focus on individualized care in both medical and cosmetic services,” she says. “I apply my extensive background in both art history and dermatology to provide the highest quality care to all my patients.”

Patients are able to get the care they need, and doctors are able to provide the care they want. Dr. Chang graduated from Princeton University with a BA in Art and Archaeology. She spent two years conducting melanoma research at New York University Medical Center and establishing a comprehensive melanoma patient database, which has been utilized in studies that defined the risk factors for and behavior of melanoma. She earned her MD from the New York University School of Medicine. She moved to Rhode Island to pursue her residency at Tufts Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. During her residency she received specialty training in dermoscopy, which is a non-invasive technique that allows for better visualization of the skin’s surface. An associate staff member at Rhode Island Hospital, Dr. Chang has over a decade of experience with providing customized care in both medical and cosmetic

dermatology. “It’s very important that patients choose board certified dermatologists for any procedures,” she says. “I love making my patients happy, whether it is clearing their acne or making them look ten years younger,” Dr. Chang says. “It’s very gratifying to be able to help people improve their confidence and self esteem.” Celebrating her first year anniversary at RIDI this year, Dr. Chang is excited to introduce new, state-of-the-art procedures to Rhode Island. “I’m excited to offer innovative treatments such as non-surgical face and neck lifts,” she says, adding that technology continues to expand the possibilities with dermatology. Dr. Chang is excited to add small group informational sessions, as well as exciting deals and specials, this year. “We have a close bond with our patients. Our approach allows us to get to know them on a very personal level, and provide the best outcome possible.”

KIM PETERSON Interior Designer People often assume that you should only call in professional interior design help when doing a major home overhaul, but Kim Elliott-Peterson says this just isn’t true. For over 20 years, Kim has been helping clients refresh everything from single rooms to large scale comprehensive projects through her company KEP INTERIOR DESIGNS. Based from her home studio in West Greenwich, Kim works with clients all over the state, and in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida. Natural Instincts “I like to make people comfortable working with a designer,” says Kim. “I’m happy to work with anyone who feels the need for help with a design project.” Kim notes that design has always come with a natural ease for her. Armed with a BA in Textiles and Design from the University of Rhode Island, this self-proclaimed color junkie enjoys the process of color placement and coordination. “My training in the psychology of color is a great asset to my ability to match and pair colors for any given use,” she explains. Kim is not only able to choose shades, but is always cognizant of color hue, value, and saturation, and how shades and textures combine for the greatest effect. Material Matters A mix of color and texture are hallmarks of Kim’s interior designs. She pays sharp attention to detail including the mixing of fabrics which result in unique and special spaces. KEP offers conceptto-use design packages that include everything from furniture selections and room layouts to accessories, artwork and the final touches that make a space feel complete. The use of textures such as grass-cloth wallpaper, heavily woven linens or silks with deep sheens, combined with a mix of patterns, work to make to Kim’s designs visually appealing and layered. Her work is so well regarded that she has had several projects published and has won awards from trade shows and magazines both locally and nationally. Building Character For Kim, one of the best parts about living and working in Rhode Island is being able to work on historic buildings. “I enjoy working with all different types of people who have different tastes, budgets, and styles of living,” she says, “But I’m most proud of my work on historical properties. I love being part of the further years in homes that have such long pasts and histories.” “I’ve been called ‘guardian angel’ and ‘dream maker’ by my clients,” says Kim. “The ideal living space is different for everyone but not everyone can take their dreams and create them in reality. I love feeling like I’m helping clients to love the place they live or work in,” she says. “I love the trust that people put in me to bring their dreams into reality.”

Kim’s recent design projects include a home office in Narragansett and a bathroom in East Greenwich.

Pat Dunigan, co-owner of TWIN WILLOWS, has many reasons to be proud of her restaurant. The beloved Narragansett establishment has a stellar reputation for its great food, atmosphere, and service. “Every day I’m proud of what we do here, but I’m most proud of the longevity of owning and running this business for 34 years,” Pat says. Purchased by Pat and Phil Durigan in 1984, Twin Willows specializes in seafood, – freshly caught and perfectly prepared – that’s best enjoyed on their waterfront patio. Now run by Pat and her son David, the casual restaurant is much more than a place to have a meal. Some people even have their own bar stools!” When she purchased the restaurant in 1984, it was a tavern frequented by URI kids. “We completely transformed it into a full family restaurant. I am especially proud of

the lasting impact we’ve had after all these years, and how we cater to the entire family. We have a game room for the kids. We offer live music on the weekends. People know each other.” The friendly and welcoming atmosphere offers a genuine camaraderie between guests and staff alike. While Twin Willows serves great seafood, they also serve up a full menu of American favorites influenced by New England’s culinary traditions. They have a great selection of shareable apps, burgers and sandwiches, pastas and steaks – plus tons of classic and modern seafood dishes. Their chowder, served in three varieties, always keeps people coming back for more. Twin Willows offers entertainment on Saturday nights, and on Sunday afternoons after football season. There’s always a game on in the bar area – even the outside deck has two large screen TVs. “We have always aimed to provide something for everyone. It’s very gratifying to know that we have succeeded in creating a popular neighborhood restaurant that makes people feel comfortable.”

Expertise. Persistence. Compassion. Resilient. These are just a few of the words clients use to describe attorneys Kristine S. Trocki and Monique M. Paquin of KRISTINE S. TROCKI, ATTORNEY AND COUNSELLOR AT LAW (KST Law). Kristine and Monique are not your average counselors at law. With utmost professionalism and a shared relentless focus, these leading women work together as a unified team to get the best possible outcome for their clients.

The Dynamic Team Approach Kristine opened KST Law, a full-service community law firm, in 2006. Monique joined in November 2013, and has worked alongside Kristine ever since to offer creative and proactive legal solutions for their clients. Practicing law as a team is just one way that distinguishes the leading women from their colleagues at other law firms. Both women are dedicated to providing the highest quality client care through transparency and communication. In fact, when you call KST Law, you will always speak directly with Kristine and/or Monique. Both attorneys are always fully informed of all details in every client’s matter. This close-knit team approach provides incisive, comprehensive, and customized care, and allows clients to receive the full benefits of two attorneys while essentially only paying for one. “Our team is completely in sync, and it’s powerful,” says Kristine. “It’s our secret weapon.” The dynamic women bring a high level of preparedness, expertise, and determination to each case. “Never underestimate us,” Kristine says. As a client once told Kristine she “Loved the fact that we are not only highly intelligent, but can advocate on a wide spectrumfrom thoughtful, practical and kind to full on pit bulls with lipstick, if need be.”

Stronger Together Since Kristine and Monique work with clients so closely, often during highly-emotional periods of their clients’ lives, both women are focused on their clients’ overall well-being. “It’s not just about the biggest financial settlement or winning a tough case - it’s also

about coming out of this personal challenge stronger than you were when it began,” Kristine says. They also see clients at happier moments in their lives, be it starting a new business or crafting a will after the birth of a child. “We are grateful to be our clients ‘lawyers for life,’ and to help them navigate through the changes and challenges they may face throughout their lifetime,” Monique adds.

Community & Connections As leaders in law and as well as in their respective communities, Kristine and Monique value their clients and work diligently to establish client satisfaction and long-term relationships. Making a meaningful and lasting impact in someone’s life comes with gratitude for both attorneys. “We care deeply, and that’s why we fight with a relentless drive for our clients.” Kristine says. “We are so grateful for the genuine, trusted connections we make with our clients. This makes all the difference.” Kristine and Monique are each certified mediators and are each licensed to practice law in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Kristine completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at University of Rhode Island and received her Law Degree in 1999 from Northeastern School of Law. Monique is a May 2013 graduate of Roger Williams University School of Law and also completed her Bachelor’s Degree at RWU. Kristine served as President of the Jamestown Town Council 2012-2018, and has served on the board of the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce. Monique has served as the Executive Director of the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce since June 2016.

Elisa Wybraniec Wine Director

Elisa Wybraniec, Wine Director at THE COAST GUARD HOUSE, has been a key part of the incredible success and evolution of one of Rhode Island’s most iconic dining establishments. The oceanside restaurant continues to further invest its commitment to excellence and premier customer service through the education of their employees, specifically with Elisa’s staff wine training. “It’s been an incredible journey with plenty of challenges along the way,” Elisa says. “I’m so grateful that throughout it all I had the full support of the restaurant, to implement an extensive wine program and a terrific team to execute it.” The Coast Guard House is celebrating the five-plus years of Elisa’s viticultural studies, and the lasting impact on its dining experience. Elisa earned the coveted Diploma of Wine and Spirits (DWS) from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET), and recently became a WSET Nominated Educator. She is also a certified sommelier, awarded by the Court of Master Sommeliers (the leading authority on wine service) and a CSW per studies through the Society of Wine Educators. Elisa began her wine studies with the WSET at Johnson & Wales University, in Providence, under the instruction of her mentor Ed Korry; Department Chair of Dining Room & Beverage Services. To prepare for the WSET’s Diploma, Elisa enrolled with Adam Chase, a certified instructor from Boston’s Grape Experience:

Wine and Spirit School. She tasted wines every week for nearly three years with a study group to refine her pallet, as well as gain knowledge of vintage, appellation, and varietal wines. All six units of study – from sparkling wines to fortified wines – ended with a written exam and a high-stakes taste test. The certified sommelier examination, which focuses on service, puts the student on the spot to recommend wine pairings, answer detailed questions, and serve wine flawlessly. “The training was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m simply thrilled to share my knowledge with the staff, patrons, and wine enthusiasts.” This past fall, Elisa continued her education in working as a harvest intern for Alan Viader at Viader Vineyards in Deer Park, California. During her time in Napa Valley, Elisa was schooled in grape sorting, leaf pulling, manual punch downs, Brix readings, and many other processes in the winemaking trade. Now an instructor herself, Elisa teaches WSET at Johnson and Wales University and at University of Rhode Island’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Elisa also enjoys sharing her passion at The Coast Guard House, holding classes for the staff and invited guests. Her willingness to teach her colleagues provides them with the confidence to provide patrons with thoughtful suggestions for their wine selections, and introduce new favorites.

Elisa’s curated wine list has over 350 bottles available and 30 selections by the glass. The list favors domestic wine producers, but there are also organic, vegan, biodynamic, and raw wines available as well as other countries represented. The Coast Guard House features a vigorous wine pairing dinner schedule, hosting a wine dinner a month from October to June. (The restaurant also hosts beer dinners throughout the year.) Elisa selects the wine first, and then joins Chef Angel Cardona and his culinary team to have a tasting session to create a complimentary food menu. “The wine pairing dinners really highlight our amazing cuisine and hand-selected wines, and the high level of dedication this staff puts into serving our guests. It’s a celebration for all of us.” The Coast Guard House Restaurant is open seven days a week, serving lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday, and brunch and dinner on Sundays. Reservations suggested. TRACY LEROUX Advertising & Real Estate Firm Owner “Every day brings a new challenge,” says Tracy LeRoux. “I’m proud that I’ve had the resilience to evolve the company and continue to grow as a professional after all these years.” Tracy began her impressive career in New York City, where she worked on the public relations team for Ralph Lauren. After earning her Master’s from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she spent several pivotal years working at Leo Burnett and The Martin Agency. “My experience at these legendary advertising agencies gave me incredible access to the nation’s top advertisers and brands,” she says. Her track record in turning around troubled brands while increasing agency profits earned her vice president status at The Martin Agency before her 29th birthday. Soon thereafter, Tracy ventured out on her own and founded THE LINK AGENCY. With little more than a laptop and cell phone, Tracy started one of the nation’s leading advertising agencies by landing Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, the world’s second-largest public charity, as her first client. Within a few months, TJX Corp., Goya Foods, Pulte Homebuilders, and Kellogg’s came aboard. A visionary

brand strategist, Tracy helps businesses turn “issues” into “ideas,” and transforms a “broken brand” into a “breakthrough business.” “I’m passionate about inspiring others, reenergizing tired brands, and leading change,” she says. Having such in-depth knowledge of her clients’ businesses, Tracy would often be involved in their real estate transactions. This prompted her to expand her firm’s capabilities into real estate marketing with LINK REAL ESTATE. The boutique real estate firm has seen a recent expansion of residential and commercial representation on the East Bay, as well as opened a storefront location in Barrington. Whether she’s teaching at Roger Williams University, handling a real estate transaction, or advising CEO’s, her mission is to help others achieve their goals. “I do it because I love it. THE LEADING LADIES AT PROVIDENCE PICTURE FRAME

Left to right: Miranda, Mary, Lisa Bushee, Diolinda, Dale, and Lisa Lagory, and PPF Mascots Edie and Emma

PROVIDENCE PICTURE FRAME started in 1850, and has been helping people making beautiful memories ever since. Over the decades, the store went from a tiny spot in The Arcade to the major art destination that it is now. Today, Providence Picture Frame is housed in a historic mill off North Main Street. They offer framing, and also photo and painting restoration, printing and appraisals, and sell antique maps, framed prints, and mirrors. Their Dryden Gallery, with three exhibition spaces that showcase art by local artists, has become a major art destination in the area, and can host events of up to 200 people. It all adds up to a full acre of space devoted to local art and fine craftsmanship, and a staff of people who spend their lives making spaces more beautiful. Meet the Leading Ladies Providence Picture Frame team. Donna Parsons has been Gallery Director at Providence Picture Frame & Dryden Gallery for six years, and has been with the company for over 15 years. As Gallery Director, Donna is responsible for filling the gallery’s three exhibition rooms: the Red Gallery on the first floor, the Piano Room on the second, and the Grand Gallery upstairs, which is over 3,500 square feet and is considered one of the finest galleries in New England. Miranda Harreys came to Providence Picture Frame in 2013 as part of a career change. With some experience from another shop but, more importantly, with a friendly personality and a lifetime of sewing skills, she is now an expert

in hand sewing and the archival treatment of everything from fine silk tapestries, to sports jerseys belonging, to members of major New England sports clubs.

The staff spends their lives making spaces more beautiful. Dale Ryan, sales manager, has been with Providence Picture Frame since it was a tiny shop in The Arcade. Her primary role, as she describes it, is meeting new people and improving their spaces, helping them to envision the difference that great framing can make not just to one photo or piece of art, but to a whole room. She works closely with local offices to place artwork that fits their business and their budget. Diolinda Pereira started with the company 18 years ago and quickly demonstrated her skill as a craftsperson with an eye for detail. Once all of the various tasks have been performed on a customer’s project and components produced, she is the one who brings it all together for final assembly and inspection. She’s never afraid to kick something back into production if she is not happy with it. If it’s hanging on your wall, it’s probably because Diolinda said it could.

Lisa Lagory is the head of Providence Picture Frame’s matting and archival treatment department. She is an expert in the ancient art of paper hinges for high value works on paper, and at the same time, she is also recognized as one of North America’s most knowledgeable users of CAD mat cutting machines. Combine this with her design expertise, and she is a triple threat. Lisa Bushee is half of the growing digital reproduction and printing department. With years of experience as professional photographer, photo editor and printmaker, she is able work with the most exacting professionals, but her warm personality allows her to also make the least tech-savvy customers feel right at home. In addition to her technical skills, Lisa is also works with customers to help frame anything that they have printed. Mary Lindberg is the newest member of the team, and comes with a diverse background in art and design. An artist herself, she has a broad range of skills from painting on various substrates, sculpture, set design, and light carpentry. She is a triple threat -- working with customers at the design counter, in their homes as an art installer, and in the workshop as a framer.

DEBRA L. CHERNICK, ESQ. General Counsel

Do you believe your path is laid out before arriving at a crossroad? I never did, but I fell into the practice of law unexpectedly. I have now been practicing for over three decades and have never regretted my decision. Here is how it happened,” Debra Chernick, General Counsel to SAYER REGAN & THAYER, LLP tells. “After graduating Brandeis University, I went to work for American Airlines. I was happily traveling and living a carefree life. One day, a friend said he was taking the LSATs and I thought, ‘Why not, I’ll take them too.’ As fate would have it, I was accepted at the University of Connecticut and upon graduating, I landed a terrific legal position at a law firm. Once I became a mother, I needed my independence so I left the firm and opened my own office. Setting up shop on Main Street, Wakefield and Bellevue Avenue, Newport, I have been taking care of the public’s needs from birth to death. I’m honored that so many wonderful clients have worked with me, and fortunate to call their children my clients as well. Whether guiding them in the purchase of a home, preparing their estate documents or handling family court matters, I view this as my contribution and my service to the community.”

Sarah Isabella, a Realtor with RANDALL REALTORS, entered her career at the bottom of the market. “I was a buyer looking to purchase an investment property, and I knew little of the work entailed by the realtor,” Sarah tells. “Let’s just say I ran her ragged and after two years I finally purchased property. Throughout it all, I gained invaluable knowledge that inspired me to begin my real estate career.” Sarah has been a full-time realtor and investor for many years now, and continues to enjoy the process of learning. “Market knowledge and diligent work are key and that benefits my clients as I assist them buying and selling their homes. Buying a home is one of the big life decisions and the path can be extremely stressful. As a client said to me ‘I had no idea how much goes into this process. The Endless Summer Surfers like Tricia Pan embrace a year-long season

Make no mistake: Cold-weather surfing is hard. Your eyelashes can freeze together. A single stray hair can solidify and break off. You can slip on a chunk of ice and plunge into dangerously cold water. You can feel temperature-induced pain in your forehead, the infamous “ice cream headache.” But if you do it right, and you really love to surf, South County is a fantastic place to catch some winter waves. Just ask Tricia Pan, who co-owns Narragansett Surf and Skate. Pan grew up in a surfing family – her father is the legendary Rhode Island surfer Peter Pan – and she received her first winter suit at 12 years old. “The wetsuit technology has come a long way from when I was a kid, that’s for sure,” says Pan. “That’s a big thing, when you finally get your own suit. It’s just like when you get your

74

SORhodeIsland.com • March 2019

own surfboard – it’s a whole new world. The first time, you feel cold, but you’re not wet. It’s not until it starts creeping in that you feel the wet. But it’s not that bad. And after a little bit, you start to warm up again.” Thermal materials are vital for winter surfers. Suits can measure six millimeters thick and come with hoods and gloves. Only the face is ever exposed to frigid ocean, and participants tend to look like wave-riding ninjas. Hardy athletes can ease their way into fall and spring surfing, adapting to thicker activewear and chillier waters. So why would anyone do this? More chances to hang ten – and in one of the best locations in the Northeast. Summer only lasts so long, but proper insulation makes four-season surfing possible. Pan says the best swells usually come between late August and October, thanks to

hurricane season, but it’s possible to perform pop-ups all winter long. Hundreds of Rhode Island surfers ride their boards all year, heading down to places like Central Beach in Charlestown, where they may be the only living souls on the sand. Last month, Narragansett Town Beach hosted the New England Mid-Winter Surfing Championships, an annual tradition since 1968. “You have to love it,” says Pan, who offers cold-weather surfing classes for newbies. “Like any kind of crazy, you creep in slow. People in California have no idea.”

Artistic Expression North Kingstown’s Janelle Feigley makes a grand old house into a colorful forever home

Photography by Grace Lentini

Shades of blue convey the nearby seaside while visually connecting spaces throughout

Inside the 1833 Colonial house built for Captain Vincent Gardiner in Wickford, don’t expect to see a ship’s wheel table or even navy and white stripes. Today the home is alive with color, drawing from the rich waterside palette of owner Janelle Feigley, a painter and owner of Gossip, a Boho-style clothing boutique on the village’s Main Street which also serves as her studio. Feigley notes that in the past she always decorated with her mind on resale value, typically painting walls with neutral tones. However, this house was different. “We knew from day one that this was a ‘forever house’ for us, and so our color decisions were made

based upon only us and our vision of a happy place. Our goal was never to reach perfection, but, rather, to make our house comfortable and inviting.” While the couple may have painted certain accent walls and trim in bold shades of blue, they opted to keep existing plaster walls intact, enjoying the layers of history they imbue. “Our walls are not smooth and our floors are not even, but somehow it all works and encourages the tapping of additional nails to decorate the house with our art and the art of friends that we purchase.” Describing the decor as “imperfectly perfect,” whatever furnishings come into the

Accents, however, are found objects from beach walks and vacations, antiquities with modern appeal, or personal works of art. Harkening tidying expert Marie Kondo, Feigley notes that “being an artist, things and accessories in the home do bring me joy and remind me of my travels and memories. that align with fond memories.” To keep things organized on the quick, she relies on hooks and baskets for everything from toys to market totes. “I am mindful and cherish historic preservation,” begins Feigley. “However, I have a keen eye for art and artifacts and making the two work in the same space and being respectful to the history of the home is often a challenge. If I really LOVE something, I find a place for it.” When asked to define her interior design aesthetic, Feigley smiles and says,

“Our home has a true mix of old and new, with many modern updates and contemporary flairs to accent my style of art. If I had to make up a name for my decorator style, I’d say ‘abstracted-historic-modern influenced by a wanderlust spirit!’”

I would describe my personal style as classic with an edge. I feel the most ‘me’ when I’m wearing vibrant colors – whether it’s a bold shirt, bright earrings, or a poppy lip. I’m exposed to so many amazing fabrics and patterns that I like to take a little bit of that and infuse it into my wardrobe. I dress pretty consistent with the style and color palette of my design work. I’m a believer in creating spaces that are unique to us as individuals, and I also believe what we wear should be unique and tell a story about who we are. I always like to feel polished, more often than not. In the colder months, I love my Trina Turk bright pink wrap coat. I have a pair of simple Banana Republic shoes in a blueand-white check pattern that are so fun and my Rag & Bone black leather pants are a go-to for a night out. I cannot live without my Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick. It was a game changer for someone who doesn’t slow down to reapply throughout the day! I have six different colors. At the firm [Blakely Interior Design], we have an exceptional ability to work with color in a way that is both uplifting and tasteful. Also, having a business background, my firm is run on solid processes that allow our projects to run smoothly in a way that clients know exactly what to expect. Most of our Rhode Island projects are designed with a ‘nod to coastal.’ We aim to put a unique spin on coastal design, infusing elements of color and pattern, while using some elements such as natural fibers and keeping spaces light and airy. If you are looking for a designer, review their prior work and make sure their design aesthetic resonates with you. I’d also make sure they are up front with what the design investment looks like and to manage expectations on what you’ll receive and when.

We’ll give you something to smile about. Creating confident smiles is what we do best. Dr. Michael Ferry is an Invisalign® Preferred Provider. He treats both children and adults. For more information go to www.ferryortho.com or call for your free initial exam.

Veg Out

Scallop & Shrimp Piccata Risotto

Exeter isn’t what we like to call the restaurant capital of Rhode Island. As a teacher in Exeter, my options for after-school dining are limited. On in-service days, teachers often grab breakfast at the Middle of Nowhere Diner. Yet through the years, the Celestial Cafe has remained the class of the Exeter dining scene. Many a EWGTA party has been held here, and it’s always been good. I hadn’t been in for a proper dinner recently, so I was eager to go. The Celestial Cafe opened for business in 2002 with a mission to provide locally sourced food. Back then, farm-to-table wasn’t at the forefront of the local food scene, but co-owner Branden Read bought from local farms as a way to support the businesses he admired. The restaurant is located on South County Trail in an upscale plaza close to Schartner Farms. The restaurant space is open, comfortable, and more sophisticated than you expect it to be. The bar area is large with plenty of seats for watching URI hoops or Boston Celtics games. The beer and cocktail lists focus on local producers. Just about every cocktail is made with some sort of spirit from Wakefield’s Sons of Liberty. My friend and I have been on a craft beer kick, so we ordered Warwick’s Proclamation Derivative/Galaxy Style on draft. They also had plenty of other local choices including selections

from Grey Sail, Whaler’s, Ragged Island, and Shaidzon – to name a few. If you like craft beer, this is the place for you. I’m always quick to remark when a restaurant doesn’t have local beer, and Celestial Cafe has it in spades. I would consider the menu to be vegetable-centric comfort food. It’s eclectic – from jambalaya to ramen to BBQ ribs. Yet, what all the food has in common is the abundance of fresh produce brought to each dish. At first I thought, “if you don’t like vegetables, this might not be the place for you,” but even veggie haters shouldn’t despair because every dish is cooked to order, and you can get something customized to your liking. The restaurant is also very good about food allergies and many things can be made gluten free (including the pizza crust). For starters, we were intrigued by the Lobster Rangoon special. The fried wontons were stuffed with cream cheese and lobster meat and then finished with a spicy thai peanut sauce. We also sampled the Stuffed Wickford Oysters. The oysters were stuffed with gluten free bread crumbs, smoked pork belly, pickled red onion, Laurel Hill Farm spring mix, and garlic-chili butter. There was a lot going on in this dish, and although all of the components were delicious and well prepared, the oysters seemed a bit overwhelmed. We didn’t opt for any thin crust pizza, but I’ve

Crispy Vegan Brussel Sprouts

had it many times and can vouch for its quality. The toppings are unique and fresh (think Pat’s Pastured pulled pork and smoked kielbasa with Narragansett Creamery cheeses). Though neither of us ordered vegetarian meals, we got our daily vegetable intake with our entrees. I chose the Winter Catch. On this night, the featured fish was Atlantic salmon. The salmon, though good, was such a small part of this dish. The fish was surrounded by roasted garlic brussels sprouts and carrots, gluten free buttermilk fried leeks, red wine poached cranberries, dressed salad greens, and served with a horseradish aioli. My friend had the Petite Filet Mignon. The 8 oz filet was perfectly cooked (though under seasoned) and so tender you could cut it with a butter knife. Along with the beef, she was served fresh-roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, and whipped potatoes. Once a month, the Celestial Cafe hosts local farm dinners. For $45, the price fixe dinner includes either a local beer, wine or a crafted cocktail in addition to a 4-5 course meal. February’s menu featured Kale and Arugula Rocket Soup, Green Leaf Salad, Stuffed Portabella Mushroom, Loaded Fingerling Potatoes, and Coffee Crème Brulee. These dinners are very popular, and reservations are highly recommended.

Working in Exeter, I am used to partaking in the town’s farming life. One of my students brings me in a huge bag of produce each week and a student (before she graduated) used to bring me in a dozen farm fresh eggs every other week. The Celestial Cafe takes its farm central location and uses it to the fullest. There is no need to order vegetables from a Cisco truck when you have such an abundance of produce grown right at your doorstep.

If You Build It, They Will Sip Apponaug Brewery opens in historic Warwick building

Photo (top) courtesy of Apponaug Brewing, photo (bottom) courtesy of Field Of Artisans

Last July, Apponaug Brewing Co. published a post on Facebook – a photo of a large window overlooking the Pawtuxet River. “Walls. Windows. Wiring,” it read, adding: “Now we wait on water.” For months, Apponaug fans watched the renovation process unfold, as founders Tamara McKenney and Kris Waugh documented their visit to Four Star Farms, the installation of a 6,000-pound fermenter, and the shipment of Apponaug T-shirts and caps. On October 9, they announced their grand opening. Now, only a few months later, Apponaug has become a destination for craft beer fans. Apponaug is the primary commercial tenant in the Pontiac Mills building, which is known for its upscale lofts; McKenney spent 12 months looking for precisely the right location for their future business. More than just a beer brewer, the Apponaug kitchen is also a bustling restaurant, where Chef Marc Alexander serves up flatbreads, tacos, and sliders. The taps change regularly, so you can sample the handiwork of brewer Justin Tisdale. When spring arrives, patrons get to chill outside by the water, and maybe catch sight of a turtle or two. For folks who watched the project evolve on social media, visiting Apponaug redeems a long-awaited dream. For those who’ve never heard of it, the brewery is a welcome addition to the Warwick beer-making scene. Warwick, ApponaugBrewing.com

Whalers Brewing hosts monthly crafts market Beer pairs well with a lot of things: food, concerts, and – let’s be honest now – shopping. So when the Field of Artisans market started its monthly popups at Whalers Brewing Co. in Wakefield, it only made sense. Pick the right Sunday, and you can nab a pint of craft beer and a handmade gift. The Field of Artisans roster includes all kinds of artists and craftspeople – from designers and photographers to musicians and painters. Founded three years ago, this league of creatives now claims more than 350 members, and they’ve been popping up at Whalers Brewing every month this year. During the summer, the market migrates to Marina Park in South Kingstown, but the Whalers taproom serves nicely during the winter. This month’s edition takes place March 3, followed by two more markets this spring. While you’re there, celebrate the occasion with an East Coast IPA or a Hazelnut Stout. When Amanda Nall was 17, she landed a job washing dishes at Bogue’s Alley. The corner deli stood on the Connecticut side of the Pawcatuck River, and it was known for its massive panini sandwiches and allday breakfast. “I was nervous when I first started,” remembers Nall, “but I instantly fell in love with it.” That love blossomed, and Bogue’s Alley has become the lynchpin of Nall’s precocious career. She didn’t just work here for four years, and she didn’t just come back after culinary school; in 2014, when Nall was in her mid-twenties, she bought the place.

“That is by far my biggest and most proud accomplishment,” she says. Yet, Nall had already accomplished quite a bit – she enrolled at Johnson & Wales, studied Culinary Arts and Food Service Management, earned a Distinguished Visiting Chef scholarship, and worked alongside Barbara Lynch, the Boston-based restaurateur. The student and mentor became friends, and Nall started an internship at one of Lynch’s most acclaimed restaurants, No. 9 Park. She followed this up with an internship at Avenue N in Rumford, a restaurant that Nall still considers her favorite in

Rhode Island. “Avenue N reminds me so much of my business now,” says Nall. “Because, for such a small place, it’s amazing how much food can come out of there.” Much of Bogue’s Alley remained intact when Nall purchased the business from its previous owners, Fred and Jen Bogue. The space had previously been a general store, and a sign for Besso’s Variety still hangs near the cash register, along with other tchotchkes. Several menu items were named after Bogue’s Alley regulars, and Nall has continued this tradition; the Big Bill is named after Bill Magowan, who visits the shop twice every day. The El Jefe is named after a local named Jeff. The Nico, with its Italian sausage, vinegar peppers, and scrambled eggs, is named after Nall’s own godson. Each day, Nall receives a shipment of thick rolls from her baker in the Bronx. Customers flow through the deli from dawn till dusk. Nall also arranges catering for a range of area clients. The tiny kitchen churns out lemon chicken, lasagna, meatballs, pastas, and soups. While Bogue’s Alley is technically in Connecticut, Nall appreciates the neighborliness of Westerly and Pawcatuck, which behave like the same village. “I always say, my spot is the best location in town,” says Nall, who can watch the Pawcatuck River Duck Race from the deli’s doorstep. “There is a lot of foot traffic that happens down here also. We all get along, we are all friends, and we all help each other and want each other to succeed. It’s great to see employees of other downtown businesses, and I love supporting the other businesses downtown, because in all reality I don’t have a lot of time to cook when I get home!”
