so & so | calendar | rhody gem The People’s Museum commemorates daily life in Westerly, as well as specific local veterans
Forward March As Westerly’s 350th anniversary approaches, the Armory celebrates both arsenal and community Two generations ago, the Westerly Armory was a busy place. Dances were held in the spacious drill hall. Car shows were hosted here, and poultry shows were well attended. Celebrities like Ella Fitzgerald performed for sold-out crowds. The Armory is a massive structure, built like a brick castle. Within its sturdy walls, much of Westerly’s civic life once unfolded. “It was the hub of social activity, right through the 1950s,” says Roberta Mudge Humble, founding president of Westerly Armory
Restoration, Inc. and co-creator of The People’s Museum. “Then things started to drop off,” she adds. “People stopped coming here.” Roberta is a force of nature. She speaks in quick, precise sentences, as if trying to keep up with her whirring mind. She taught professional writing at the Community College of Rhode Island for 47 years, and she can clearly explain a gamut of topics: local war heroes, international firearms, hand-carved model airplanes, antique dolls, and the street value of a Medal of Valor. Passing the rehearsal room, she mentions

that the Westerly Band was founded in 1852, making it the oldest continuously active civic band in the country. A Westerly native, Roberta didn’t think much about the Armory until 1992, when she started volunteering there. The nearly-century-old structure had seen better days; four years later, the National Guard ceased using the Armory at all. Roberta conscripted her ex-husband, John Humble, to help resuscitate the neglected facility. Today, Westerly Armory Restoration, Inc. has an energetic leadership committee and its own battalion of volunteers. To help everyday locals connect with their history, Roberta created Rhode Island Books & Games; she has published numerous chapbooks on Ocean State culture, such as
Sing Rhode Island and The BIG Rhode Island Quiz. The museum has amassed a diverse collection of artifacts, from uniforms to paintings to toys. More than just rooms full of militaria, The People’s Museum is also an homage to Westerly’s civilian past, including sports, industry, and women’s fashion. On May 18, the Armory will host the Westerly 350 Encore Gala, celebrating the three-anda-half centuries since the town was founded. The museum has also begun its Marching in Time campaign; proceeds will benefit the renovation of the lower level, radically expanding its floor space and collections. “I want it to be about community,” says Roberta. “The military is not a separate world. They’re part of us.” WesterlyArmory.org -Robert Isenberg

Second Chances Stand Up For Animals funds behavioral dog training, adoption, and outreach services at the Westerly Animal Shelter
Photography by Jan Tormay
From left, SUFA’s President Lina O’Leary and Executive Director Deb Turrisi with Bruno, a pit bull mix, and Stoli, a brindle mix.
Dogs, cats, bunnies, birds, hamsters, and even the bearded dragons, know that all roads sometimes lead to the Westerly Animal Shelter at 33 Larry Hirsch Lane. The $2.8 million state-of-the-art building that houses the regional outreach facility, adoption center, and animal shelter was built with funds raised by Stand Up for Animals (SUFA) and opened in 2009. The non-profit organization’s mission is to support the needs of the aforementioned and “promote the health and welfare of lost or abandoned pets and to educate and assist those who care for them.” Sometimes the pets’ first homes don’t work out because of allergies, their families move, people are too busy, or they were
given as gifts and the recipients didn’t want the responsibility of caring for them, SUFA President Lina O’Leary says. SUFA Executive Director Deb Turrisi adds, “When dogs come in, they really get to know their personalities, and whether they like other animals and small or big children. If a dog is questionable, maybe it’s mouthy … doesn’t have manners, the dog trainers will work with the dogs and teach them the commands (sit, stay, and walk on a leash with Martingale cloth collars) until the animals are ready to be adopted.” Once they’ve found a home, the new dog owners can work with the trainer to ascertain what the dog has learned and continue its training – for a fee, which ranges from
$120 to $200. Before being adopted, all animals have been examined by the shelter veterinarian, vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed/neutered, and are healthy. Adoption fees: $150 for dogs, $100 for cats, and $25 for small critters. Deb herself has a dog and two cats, which she adopted last year. She shares, “You forget how much life they bring into the house – whether they’re chasing each other or talking to you.” For details about pet adoption, volunteering, donating, and upcoming fundraising events, contact SUFA Executive Director Deb Turrisi at 401-580-5312, email DebTurrisi@StandUpForAnimals.org, or visit StandUpForAnimals.org. -Jan Tormay

Fish’n Tales Adventures is based in Newport, and they are best known for their fishing trips. You can haul up lobster traps, sort the catch, and even rent a fishing boat for a four-hour party.
But this year, Fish’n Tales added something new: seal-watching tours. Each winter, these adorable, blubbery mammals swim their way into Narragansett Bay, where they hunt in the cold water, swim in pods, and
Where We Treat Everyone Like Family
CROWNS sprawl over rocks. Such public posing makes them easy to spot, and Fish’n Tales wanted to give animal-lovers the opportunity to see them. “This is our inaugural year,” says Thaxter Tewksbury, who has captained for Fish’n Tales for nearly four years. “We finally got our oar in the water, so to speak.” The winter tour is exciting for Thaxter, who holds a master’s degree in oceanography and used to lead similar marine tours in Connecticut. Fish’n Tales proposed the new service to the Wickford harbor master, the town council, and the local Chamber of Commerce. The concept has won enthusiastic support, and trips have departed from the Wickford town dock since January. The vessel is a 50-foot fishing boat originally built in 1967, and it’s permitted to carry 45 passengers at a time. “We have a naturalist aboard,” says Thaxter. “We do some natural history on seals. We talk about behavior, distribution.” Seal watching is different from other kinds of eco-tours, partly because harbor seals are so subdued. But the Narragansett seals have already won a steady and diverse following. At $25 a ticket, the Fish’n Tales tour can last up to 90 minutes, and it’s a rare opportunity for winter boating. The craft must keep a distance of 50 feet from the animals, and Thaxter usually gives them an even wider berth; thus, the company provides binoculars for close-up viewing. Seals are only really visible during their down-time. “I always put it this way,” says Thaxter. “If people came in to tour your house while you were hanging out on the couch, you’d be lounging and resting. There isn’t a guarantee of a lot of activity.” But that won’t bother seal enthusiasts. The sight of those slick, whiskered faces will be more than enough. All passengers need bring is an interest in nature – and warm clothes. “We also provide complimentary hot chocolate,” adds Thaxter. Wickford, FishNTalesAdventures.com -Robert Isenberg

North Kingstown’s newest recreational center Make A Mess brings new meaning to sensory play. Geared exclusively towards all things ooey, gooey, and fun,
Make A Mess gives kids the opportunity to use their imagination without the guilt or hassle of cleaning up. “I’ll never sacrifice fun for cleaning,”

Ray Castaldi
founder and “Master Mess Maker” Michelle Sweet explains. Inspired by her own experiences with her kids at home, she realized the fun of messy play shouldn’t come to an end during the colder months. Since their opening in October, the walls of the facility have been splattered with every medium imaginable – blocks coated with shaving cream, T-shirts sprayed with paint, and their homemade “fizzy cloud dough.” Just when you think you’ve seen every color of the rainbow of fingerprints, smudges, and goo – the paper-lined walls are shed anew, ready for another session of mess making. Make A Mess’ bustling rec center offers workshops Monday through Friday with three drop-in sessions you and your little mess-maker can attend throughout the day. A small $10 fee will allow access to any of the nine different play stations in their front room, along with the group activity of the day in the back. This is where kids can freely roam from station to station, entering play worlds with landscapes of beans, water-orbs, rainbow rice, and moon sand – fresh and ready for messing at the beginning of each session. After a day’s work, kids can wash up at any of the four cleaning stations in the back. Michelle explains that sensory play encourages kids of all ages to use their imagination, concentration, and gross motor skills that would normally be “hushed” during indoor play. “Kids that once couldn’t sit still are sitting for an hour at a time with the bread crumbs,” she says. “You’re learning to play messy, but in all the right ways.” Although Make A Mess’ participants usually range from 1 to 5 years-old, the facility is “kid dependent” and encourages older mess-makers, too! Leigh Medeiros was in the middle of a tough year. Her husband was diagnosed with a serious illness, and they spent months visiting doctors and hospitals. Whenever she was stuck waiting for something important to happen, Leigh
would whip her phone, open the “notes” app, and type out a thought. Her husband thankfully recovered, and Leigh finally compiled all these notes. The total manuscript was 125 pages – single spaced. “By accident, I discovered the power

of micro-writing,” Leigh recalls with a laugh. “It’s the easiest way possible to do creative writing.” Her new book, The 1-Minute Writer, takes this approach to heart. The book contains 135 pages of writing prompts, nudging would-be scribblers to put pen to paper. Designed for “tired and busy people,” the prompts are wide-ranging: What genre would the movie of your life be? How would you describe your posture? Write the inner monologue of someone who has found one of your possessions. Users can decide how much time they have, from one to 20 minutes, and find a corresponding assignment. Leigh has long been an accomplished writer, editor, and painter. An East Greenwich native, she has worked on Hollywood movie sets, served as a script consultant, and helped develop books. She also runs an online forum called 48 Days of Creative Devotion, helping others focus their personal work. The program began as an informal Facebook group, but demand was so high that 48 Days has since ballooned into a full-on program. The big rule: Don’t trash your own work. “There’s this habitual negativity,” says Leigh. “People say, ‘This is no good.’ It’s a form of security, to protect themselves.” But Leigh wants her mentees to own their verbal experiments and share them with others. Leigh has been excited about the exploding literary scene in Rhode Island, such as the What Cheer Writers Club, the Frequency Writers and Grub Street writing classes, and reading series like Stranger Stories and The Cardigan Connection. She is excited that so many resources – and now her book – can help aspiring writers come out of their shells. “People say, ‘I don’t have a creative bone in my body,’” she says. “They say, ‘I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler.’ Well, that’s just not true. And straight lines are boring. And literally, your existence is creative.” For more information about Leigh’s work, visit LeighMedeiros.com -Robert Isenberg

The Scoop | rhody gem
Updike’s Newtowne Coffee We are pleased to introduce the Rhody Gem, a new monthly column in SO Rhode Island. We’re always being thanked for spotlighting the “hidden gems” of the state, and in our ongoing efforts to leave no stone unturned, we’re putting the call out to our readership! Each month we’ll spotlight a Rhody Gem: a business, artisan, or place lead to us by our faithful readers. What it is: A coffee roasting company and cafe.
What makes it a Rhody Gem? Driving along busy Post Road it’s easy to overlook that tucked within a strip of businesses is a roasting company and coffee shop. Discover this spot known by neighbors for serving up the freshest cup in a laidback atmosphere (read: classic coffee shop vibe). Look for daily “just roasted” offerings from Africa, Indonesia, and South and Central America scrawled on the chalkboard. A black beadboard counter that doubles as a bookcase is filled with volumes at the ready, with tables, chairs, and baked goods beckoning you to get your cup of joe to stay.

We recently caught up with Alicia to learn more about their innovative mulch service. How does blown-in mulch work? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work.

How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? It really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour.
What types of properties do you service? We service both commercial and residential properties throughout Rhode Island with a 10 yard minimum. What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We install mulch, playground chips and errosion controls like silt sock. What do you say to skeptics? Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year. Once they see us pull that off, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.

Chocolate Hop Trade supermarket varieties for local chocolates to elevate your Easter basket By Lauren Vella Photography by Brandon Harmon
It’s early spring – that means warmer weather, morning birdsong, crocuses and daffodils popping out of the ground, and Easter. One of the best things about this pastel-colored holiday is the treats that come with it. Chocolate is carefully arranged in baskets, hidden as surprises in Easter eggs, or simply molded into bunny shapes and presented in cellophane. This year, ditch the processed or factory-made variety and elevate your Easter basket with selections from five local gourmet chocolatiers.
SWEET TWIST This local purveyor is a one-stop shop. Not only does Sweet Twist make confections, but you can also pick up small gifts and jewelry from the store, too. The shop in East Greenwich makes whimsical sprinklecovered treats that are appropriate for any holiday season. For Easter, sample their chocolate bunnies and chocolate-covered Oreos. You can also find truffles, caramel and chocolate apples, and assorted milk chocolates there year-round. SweetTwist.com
SWEENOR’S CHOCOLATES Sweenor’s is a local business with a history. The shop was started by Walter Sweenor, who needed to make extra money during World War II, and he expanded to a full sweet shop by 1955. The sweet maker is famous for their assorted chocolate boxes, but they also make brittles, truffles, salted toffee, and an array of other chocolate-covered goodies. SweenorsChocolates.com
NEWPORT SWEET SHOPPE This shop is the perfect place for out-of-state visitors to take home a little taste of the seaside city. Newport Sweet Shoppe offers 90 varieties of molded chocolates, including symbols of the area like Newport pineapples, lobsters, sailboats, and seashells. While you’re there, you also might want to pick up some of their cupcakes, cookies, and salted caramels. NewportSweetShoppe.com
JENNIFER’S CHOCOLATES Attention to detail is paramount to owner Jennifer Dowell. The proof of her meticulous work can be found in the names of her products, like Dark Espresso Bars and Dark Smoked Sea Salt Caramels that describe these goodies’ depth of flavor. This “sweet” spot is best known for its clean, smooth, impeccably paired flavors like chocolate coconut clusters, white chocolate almond bark, and creamy caramels, to name a few. JensChocolates.com
SWEET INDULGENCE Kerri Smith owns a lovely boutiquestyle confectionary with picture-perfect goodies. The business is well-suited for anyone hosting a special event because Sweet Indulgence prepares and packages confections perfect for favors and small surprises. During this holiday season, sample Kerri’s Easter arrangements with chocolate-covered pretzels and Peeps, all placed in a chocolate bowl! Located in Cranston, the store specializes in gourmet chocolate apples and hand-dipped products. Facebook: My Sweet Indulgence

ith the city at its heart nicknamed The Creative Capital, it’s no surprise Rhode Island has a world-class arts scene. In a survey commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts, our state ranks among the top 15 in number of working artists. Think you have to go to Providence to find them? Think again. In South County, a funky arts scene thrives with galleries that feature local and regional artists for every taste and budget. “Rhode Island is filled with artists,” enthuses Dave “Gilly” Gilstein, co-owner of Charlestown Art Gallery (CharlestownGalleryRI.com). “It’s almost an embarrassment of riches.” With 3,000 square feet of wall space, Charlestown Art Gallery is one of the largest in Rhode Island and mainly exhibits artists from the state. While there are a few outliers who live elsewhere in New England or farther flung, the artists all have some connection to the region, including many RISD grads. “We don’t sell investment art,” Gilly says, referring to the pieces that sell at auction for millions of dollars. “Our artists are contemporary working artists. We love their work.”
The Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly’s (WesterlyArts.com) board president Arlene Piacquadio points out that with their new digs at the Westerly Train Station, the Artists Cooperative has exploded as downtown Westerly undergoes a renaissance. “We now get a lot of first-time visitors, including lots of Manhattanites, who don’t expect to find art here.” With a monthly rotation of visiting and member artists, the gallery is hopping year-round. YJ Contemporary Fine Art Gallery (YJContemporary.com) in East Greenwich opened its doors in 2018, but its roots in the art world go back over 20 years. Founded by Rhode Island photographer Alan Blazer and his son Josef, the creation of the gallery was a natural expansion of their existing business, Blazing Editions. Blazing creates archival, limited edition reproduction prints and represents a number of internationally renowned artists like painters Josef Kote and Anne Packard. With that background, a number of the country’s top artists are represented with stunning oversized prints lining the walls of their annex gallery. But their main show room features New England-based artists that have a contemporary flair. This month’s exhibit, Art & Design: A Conversation that runs through April 23, pairs four regional abstract artists with four local furniture makers. 40

hile South County’s galleries still boast a number of nautical works – not unusual for an area known for its beaches – many have added more abstract work to their walls in recent years. “Our work ranges from traditional to funky,” says Charlestown’s Gilly, adding that while he loves edgy, political work, he can’t carry it in the gallery. “Our mission is to help artists make a living, so I have to be conscious of the market and what appeals to a buyer.” For more provocative works, head to Hera Gallery (HeraGallery.org) in Wakefield. The Hera was originally founded in 1974 as one of the first women’s cooperative galleries in the nation. Its mission has always been one of inclusion. “We’re really an incubator space. You won’t find censorship here,” says Alexandra Broches, a founding member. For example, the theme of April’s show, Shame, was inspired by the Kavanaugh hearings. “We love supporting the work of emerging artists,” Alexandra adds. “Those artists are a great entry point for collectors just starting out because they are more affordable.” At OneWay Gallery (OneWayGallery.com) in Narragansett, artist-owner Stephen Cook also puts the focus on emerging artists, many of whom are Rhode Island based. While OneWay is a

t The Glass Station (TheGlassStationStudio .com) in Wakefield, prices for glass art begin at a very affordable $10, going up to $6,000, making space for all collectors, from novice to experienced. “We try to keep our prices affordable because we want people to use our glass,” says Jennifer Nauck, who co-owns the gallery with fellow glass artist Eben Horton. “There’s something really special about drinking from a beautiful handmade goblet.” In this spirit, every curator echoes the advice to “buy what you love.” But buying art can be intimidating, so start small and then scale up. “As artists ourselves, we always thought collecting was out of reach,” says Charlestown’s Gilly. “But my wife bought me a small $100 painting and it started from there.” New collectors can score deals in gift shops, like the one at the Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, which features one-of-a-kind handcrafted items by their member artists. Similarly, Charlestown

5 Tips for Seasoned Collectors 1. Buy What You Love Not just a mantra for newbies, buying work that resonates gives a collection cohesion. “Everything in the collection is a reflection of you. That’s what holds it together,” explains The Glass Station’s Jennifer Nauck. 2. Mix original pieces with limited edition prints YJ Contemporary Fine Art Gallery has clients who mix prints with one or two original pieces by a favorite artist. “It’s an affordable way to expand your collection of a favorite artist,” advises YJ’s Alan Blazer. Because the prints are limited editions, they can go up in value, too. 3. Don’t get stuck in a rut “People get into ruts, and that applies to art too,” says Westerly’s Arlene Piacquadio. “If you collect landscapes, have you ever thought about an abstract?” Similarly, if your walls are filled with two dimensional paintings, consider trying a 3D medium, like the wooden sculptures and figures by Henry Gauthier of Studio 460 (Studio460Gallery.com). 4. Do your research “Ask questions about the background of the artist,” advises OneWay’s Stephen Cook. “Where else has this artist shown? Are they in private collections? Public ones? That’s important to future value.” Still, don’t get hung up on the money. “There’s value in enjoying the work you’ve purchased,” reminds Charlestown’s Gilly Gilstein. 5. Keep an eye on the “fine” print Art festivals can be a fantastic way to find new artists at competitive prices, but knowing what festival to attend can be daunting. “The term fine art is key,” explains Lorraine Hynes, board member at the Wickford Art Association, which hosts the annual Wickford Arts Festival every July, one of the largest outdoor art festivals in the country. “That ensures that the art is the caliber that it is supposed to be.”

Art Gallery sells small items such as jewelry – some crafted by the artists featured on their walls – for art lovers not quite ready to commit to something larger. Even galleries without dedicated gift shops have options for newbies. OneWay has quirky items for sale, such as street art-inspired trucker hats by RI native A.Dolt for $20. The Wickford Art Association (WickfordArt.org) has an annual show in December called Small Works that features smaller works that come with with matching price tags. Most galleries feature special events that enhance the work on the walls, often hosting talks or panel discussions with featured artists. The Wickford Art Association holds classes that are open to members and non-members alike. Hera hosts a monthly Food for Thought community conversation every first Saturday. At The Glass Station, a hands-on “create your own ornament” event happens on Saturday afternoons, while Heritage Gallery (HeritageGalleryRI.com) in East Greenwich offers a variety of glass fusing workshops for all levels. These ancillary events are key, according to Hera’s Alexandra. “Art is about connection and galleries are a way to connect people.”

Feed Your Face Between the frigid temps and the constant blasting of radiators, fireplaces, and other heating elements, most of us emerge from winter with skin as dry as can be. Herbalicious Skincare founder Carolyn Balint believes that the products we put on our skin should not only cleanse or moisturize, but nourish. Since 2015, she has been whipping up gentle, restorative formulas, all made from organic and botanical ingredients that read like a farmer’s market shopping list. Think things like goat milk, oats, and pomegranate seed oil. Together with business partner Robin Plaziak, Herbalicious Skincare offers an ever-growing line of small batch products made in Narragansett and sold at Simply Natural or at HerbaliciousSkincare.com.

Wheel of Fortune A mix of pattern and color fill a potter’s historic Wickford home with panache

If you’re a fan of functional pottery, chances are good that you know the name Spring. For many years, potter Harry Spring and his wife Elizabeth – an astrologer, author, and Jungian psychotherapist – had retail spaces for Harry’s wares around Newport before deciding to sell from their own property in North Kingstown. However, frequent passes through Wickford had them wondering about village life and contemplating a move. A house along Brown Street caught the couple’s attention – a Cape Cod build in 1833 with an enclosed porch that could be used as a retail space and a detached garage perfect for a studio. The cottage was out of their price range,
The narrow wall above the fireplace, painted a muted salmon, provides a striking backdrop for the seascape painting while connecting with the floors below
but the Springs kept tabs on it over the years. While on vacation in California, they saw that it had gone into foreclosure and was for sale through a bank at a price they could now afford. “The website listed a ‘click here to buy now,’ so we clicked the button and began the process

Harry and Elizabeth Spring’s Wickford home decor is a mash-up of traditional elements, eclectic finds, and handmade goods. Use these ideas to bring their colorful eclectic look in your own home. SPRING HOUSE For Harry and Elizabeth, homegoods don’t get more local than when they’re from your own studio. Visit the shop at 14 Brown Street in Wickford for things like bowls and mugs. Custom-made pots are also available, just call Harry at 805-7663254. TRUE BLUE Create your own water view by lining window sills with blue glass vases in varying heights, like the Springs do in their kitchen. of buying the property even though we had never been in the home!” says Harry. Built by Benoni Bates, part of the committee that built St. Paul’s Church in Wickford, Harry explains that the center chimney was removed as the Victorian period gained popularity and two chimneys, several feet apart, were installed, one in each living room. “The house is broken up into a lot of small rooms, and it gets difficult to locate one another even though we know we’re both home.” To overcome this communication gap, the Springs cut a 2x4 foot opening in the hallway wall and installed a

piece of stained glass. As they had planned, the narrow porch is their pottery store with the back entrance leading to the garage occupied by Harry’s studio. Inside the home, the couple’s adoration for classic furnishings and eclectic pieces is on display. Says Harry, “We love oriental rugs and stained glass. Our son-in-law Shane Roche made us a fireplace mantel for the dining room to match the old one in the living room.” Shutters are used throughout the home and lend an easy charm even when paired with toile window treatments.
“We make and sell our pottery at our home studio where customers can watch the pottery being made. We bought this house because we always wanted to have our home and studio and shop in the same place, and having it in Historic Wickford Village is perfect for us!”

Spring brings with it a sense of renewal – everything around us grows, recharges and blooms. Taking a cue from nature, it was a perfect time to search for ways to refresh myself. Though most things I want to change are out of my control, I had a fighting chance of reducing my stress about it. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, so I assumed yoga would be out of the question. Erika Lucas, the All Thst Matters studio manager at the Providence location where I attended my session, ultimately suggested Yoga Nidra, which would help me “…recognize the underlying peace of mind that is always present amidst the changing circumstances of life.” We have a winner! I registered, made sure my comfy, non-binding clothes were ready to go, and waited for Tuesday at 7:30pm. I arrived and found a spot on the street pretty easily. I poked around the inviting
gift shop before I checked in, took off my shoes, and got a tour. The instructor, Sohini Livewell, showed us the setup for Yoga Nidra. One sits on a mat under a cozy blanket and reclines on propped cushions, all free to borrow. I chose a modified chair position that did not diminish the experience. After a brief introduction, we concentrated on our breathing. I wanted to emulate the loud sighs I heard but felt self-conscious. When Sohini acknowledged we might be feeling silly, but that we could just let it go, I knew I was in good hands. We directed our mind’s eyes to various parts of our bodies and felt muscles surrender. We let go of stresses because they exist outside us rather than define us. We acknowledged any feelings that came to mind and then imagined the opposite was true.

Instruction paused, and delicate chimes began to ring and move about the room. Suddenly they surrounded me. Despite serious temptation, I did not open my eyes. I chose to leave something a mystery in our world of immediate explanations. The lights returned with one last instruction to bring joy back into the world with us. I’m glad Yoga Nidra is offered weekly because I will be back. If only for those chimes, which, for the record, I still haven’t Googled; and it hasn’t caused me one second of stress.

Host of The Barbi Jo Show and Director of Marketing & Promotions at 92 PRO-FM My personal style is flat-out fearless – bold, playful, and daring. Some think I belong in fashion detention, while others believe I have Barbie’s dream closet. For me, every day is a fashion show. When I feel my best, I smile my brightest. My wardrobe is electric, but inclusive. I can dress dramatic-diva, feminine-pretty, trendy-hipster, classic-elegant, sportychic, or be a rebel-rocker. My coworkers wouldn’t be surprised if I strolled into the station sporting a ballgown or rocking everyday denim. I’m very much comfortable in both. Most days, I slap on my favorite ripped jeans, but I do enjoy dressing a little extra. Sometimes I find it difficult dressing down because my closet is full of many ‘going out-out’ pieces and dresses. The best part about radio is no one can see you, although the rules have now changed with social media. I obsess over sundress/sandal season and no-jacket weather. My summer style is bubbly, cute, and colorful, while my winter wardrobe includes a lot of black. Black is always the new black, and I live for it, but by spring and summer I want a candy-colored closet. I’m seriously a sucker for a killer cocktail dress or a unique accessory. Alexandra’s in Fall River or Sonya’s in Cranston serve up some serious boutique style. Radioland is bananas, but I love the hustle. I’m juggling two jobs right now and both allow me to be very creative dreaming up contests, events, working with musical acts, and meetings celebs. There’s definitely glamour, but there’s so much that goes into the making of radio. I adore everything about Rhody, but mostly, our local taste. We’re so blessed in the grub department.

What’s On Tap? Mews Tavern has 69 brews that will quench anyone’s craft beer thirst, from neophyte to connoisseur Across the United States, craft beer is experiencing a huge boom. In 2017, Rhode Island’s craft breweries produced enough craft beer for there to be one gallon of beer for every adult (21+) in the state. As I write this article, new breweries are popping up. Former New England Patriots player Dan Koppen opened East Greenwich’s first brewery, LineSider Brewing Co., in November, and restaurants are now starting to cater to the craft beer loving customers with extensive beer lists or brews made in-house. One restaurant that’s always paid attention to the craft beer scene is Wakefield’s Mews Tavern. Mews Tavern opened in 1947 as a small pub for local fisherman. It was purchased in 1990 by Daniel Rubino and David Barnes, and through the years, the restaurant has grown and evolved. Today, there are three bars and a large dining room best known for the tree growing in it. For people who aren’t regulars, finding your way around the meandering rooms is a bit tricky. The main dining room is the only section that requires hostess seating – the rest is first come, first served. On a Saturday night, if you want to
avoid a wait, get there early. Mews takes its beer seriously, boasting 69 beers on tap. In fact, their motto is “No crap on tap,” and, depending on your definition of lackluster beer selections, this is a true statement. In the interest of good journalism, I counted exactly how many beers they had on tap, and found that it was actually 71 if you include ciders. In total, they had 11 local Rhode Island beers – among those on the “little Rhody” roster were Grey Sail’s popular Captain’s Daughter Double IPA, Ragged Island’s Coggeshall Ave. Pale Ale, and Shaidzon’s Ode to Aegir Saison. Beyond libations native to our Ocean State were some good finds including Lawson’s Finest Liquids’ Sip of Sunshine, Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout and Beer’d’s Dogs & Boats – to name a few. The problem with having so many choices of beer is deciding which ones to order. Mews understands this problem and offers $10 flights. The flights allow you to sample four beers at a time, although ordering still felt like an undertaking. I went with the Ragged Island
Crispy calamari with smoked pineapple-Sriracha sauce
and Shaidzon, Hop Nosh IPA from Uinta Brewing, and Half-Stack IPA from SingleCut Beersmiths. After my flight, I settled on a Mozee IPA from Toppling Goliath Brewing in Iowa. Even though their beer list is reason enough to go to the Mews, they offer food (wine and cocktails, too!) to soak up your alcohol intake. The menu is full of bar food and comfort food favorites; things that pair splendidly with the hoppy frothiness of beer. My friends and I split an order of Old Bay Fried Pickles, a platter of BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos, and a Buffalo Chicken Pizza. The fried pickles were our favorite. They were crispy, light, and extra delicious when dipped in the house-made ranch dressing. If you come with a crowd, the nachos are for you. The house fried corn chips were topped with enough pulled pork, cheddar-jack cheese, and jalapenos to feed the URI men’s basketball team. We ordered the “Anchor” pizza. The wood-fired crust was topped with baked chicken, bleu cheese, scallions, Buffalo sauce, and their house blend of cheeses.

Visiting Rhode Island’s craft breweries is one of my new hobbies. When you don’t have time to drive around to all of the individual breweries, restaurants like the Mews are stepping up to help. I’m never going to make it to Decorah, Iowa, to visit the Toppling Goliath Brewery, but since I tried it at the Mews, I will know to look for more of their brews.

Gather ‘Round the Buffet Table Easter Sunday spreads that will have you jumping for joy Spring is in full swing – the snow has (hopefully) melted, people are stuffing their cable-knit sweaters into storage and whipping out their pastel colored attire, and our little Ocean State is popping with floral color. Spring is also a time to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, but nothing is more cumbersome than leaving the jovial family discussion to check on the Easter ham... again. And again in 20 minutes. And again to check that your potato au gratin has turned a golden brown, but not too golden brown. Instead of doing the at-home holiday brunch shuffle, why not spend quality time with your family at a gourmet Easter brunch buffet with ocean views, stately decor, and beautiful floral arrangements? Here is a trio of restaurants in Southern Rhode Island that are pulling out all of the stops for their Easter brunch buffets.
The Bay Voyage Restaurant Normally, seafood abounds at The Bay Voyage during lunch- and dinnertime. However, this cozy inn’s holiday feast will bring a bit more “turf” to the Jamestown surf. Enjoy Easter favorites like leg of lamb seasoned with aromatic herbs, roasted beef tenderloin, glazed ham, and scrumptious sides like roasted baby new potatoes and lemon basil pasta salad. And, if you’re not feeling the “lunch” part of brunch,

While you dine, take in the surrounding scenery of the harbor and Claiborne Pell/Newport Bridge. 50 Conanicus Ave, Jamestown, BayVoyageJamestown.com Ocean House This restaurant is part of the Ocean House Relais and Chateaux that stands “high on the bluffs” of picturesque Watch Hill. On top of the meticulously manicured landscaping, the pristine décor, and the seaside boutique style rooms, Ocean House also offers an elegant
Easter brunch buffet in the ballroom. The resort takes an elevated approach to the holiday meal, offering a cheese and charcuterie station with cured meats, cheeses, and various condiments/accoutrements, a smoked seafood station, and a raw bar. More classic brunch dishes like pancakes, poached eggs, and fresh fruit are also on the menu. For those with children, the hotel also offers an Easter Tea with light spring fare and storybook telling the day before. They may also get a surprise from a special bunny. 1 Bluff Ave, Westerly, OceanHouseRI.com

Eleven Forty Nine Just off the busy four-lane Division Street in East Greenwich stands Eleven Forty Nine Restaurant. Known for its plentiful, lavish Sunday brunches, the modern American cuisine is prepared to suit all palates. On Easter, the restaurant doubles down on their carving stations for the holiday, and the interior of the restaurant is decorated with fresh flower arrangements to fit the season. Indulge in made-to-order classics like eggs benedict, omelets, and a choice of penne pasta or tortellini with different sauces and proteins. For dessert, choose from a behemoth sweets station that has both healthy and more decadent options like fruit, danishes, bread pudding, and cheesecake to name a few. 1149 Division Rd, East Greenwich, ElevenFortyNine.com

Pairing With Peppers
Photography by Robert Isenberg
How Pepper Junction’s John Greene made his way from server to hot sauce connoisseur
John Greene is a self-proclaimed one-man band. And no, that doesn’t mean he has a couple of cymbals and a drum strapped to his person like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. The seasoned restaurant professional makes all of his own hot sauces for his company Pepper Junction by himself. In 2014, after 30 years in “the industry” working various jobs, John decided that he was going to follow his long-held passion for hot sauces. The love started with Tabasco as a child and blossomed into an unexpected travel tradition later on in life. “I realized when returning from a trip visiting
family and friends, my suitcase would typically be loaded with six to ten bottles of hot sauce that I’ve never seen before. The light bulb finally lit up with an idea. If there aren’t any hot sauce shops in the area, why don’t I at least explore the idea and see where it goes?” Since then, John has dedicated his time to creating products that bring the heat but are balanced and flavorful. The sauce purveyor says that the craft hot sauce movement is in full swing, so people are not looking for condiments that are going to “blow your head off your neck.” In the restaurant
business, John learned about the products he was selling, food and wine pairings, and flavor profiling. And when it came to his own creations, he used his pairing knowledge to put together recipes. Much like a good cabernet to compliment a meaty steak, John creates hot sauces to compliment and highlight specific local fare. “[My] Tears of the Sun for instance is a habanero hot sauce made with peaches, pineapple, papaya, and mango that is an amazing compliment to our local oysters. A sauce of this nature paired up with local oysters with fruity undertones makes the oyster pop with a flavor explosion.” While his love of hot sauce was the impetus for invention, John’s health also spurred his interest in healthy cooking and eating. Prior to the “light bulb” idea, the business owner discovered that his cholesterol was excessive. Soon, he became more in tune with his diet and was put off by synthetic ingredients on the labels of packaged food products. When his business finally took off, John pledged to use real ingredients and “offer amazing products with excellent quality that are healthy.” As it turns out, peppers have a variety of advantageous properties, like capsaicin, an anti-cancer hot pepper attribute that elevates heart rates and can assist with losing weight. This, asserts John, is a secondary mission of Pepper Junction: To educate the local community about healthy food, and more specifically, the ways that hot sauce is delicious and nutritious. In the future, John would like to continue bridging the gap between food and local craft beers with sauces and seasonings. His goal: “Offer a flavor symphony in the same way certain foods with certain wine can bring your athome food experience to the next level.” Currently, Pepper Junction products are sold out of John’s aunt’s antique shop, Jules Antiques & General Store.
