Misquamicut SpringFest returns on May 11, and it's bringing a taste of summer with it
Party at the Beach Misquamicut SpringFest and Drive-In mark the unofficial start of beach season It might be a little early for throwing on your trunks and taking a dip – or not, you do you – but if anything says “beach season has arrived,” it’s the Misquamicut SpringFest. The 8th annual festival runs May 11-13 and brings the usual suspects back for another weekend of food and fun. Expect carnival rides and games, like the Ferris wheel and whack-a-mole, cruise vintage Detroit muscle at the classic car show, and wrangle up some eats at the food truck rodeo. Musical
performances from John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, Badfinger, and more will provide a killer soundtrack for the open-air festivities. If that isn’t a sure enough sign that warmer days are here to stay, make sure to head back to the beach later in the week for opening night of the Misquamicut Drive-In (May 18), featuring the greatest summer movie ever: Jaws. Stitching to the State House The Woman Project is taking its Petition 2.0 Quilt Project on the road
Founded after the 2016 election, The Woman Project uses art to connect activists across Rhode Island. “The election was a wakeup call that we need to be more involved,” says co-founder Jordan Hevenor. “We thought that if we used art and activism, we would be able to engage more people.” Now in its second official year, the entirely volunteer-based group has meetings twice a month, hosted around the state. Their main goal is to foster the passing of The Reproductive Health Care Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade on the state level. “We thought if we had one piece of legislation to focus on, we could give it a boost,” she says. To raise awareness about this issue, the organization has used artistic activism, events, and installations to highlight the support for reproductive health care in the state. These initiatives have included a postcard campaign, petitions, and The Petition 2.0 Quilt Project. In the quilt, each piece represents an individual who supports reproductive health care. This year, the group is working to complete the quilt and include signatures from people all over the state.
18
SORhodeIsland.com • May 2018
“We have about 1,400 squares that have been signed so far,” says Hevenor. This month, TWP will also travel around the state on a quilt tour, visiting all five RI counties. “Hopefully we can meet new people and help them learn about the status of reproductive health in RI,” she says. “It’s an awareness tour and we think it will encourage and engage people.” Hevenor feels the state has enormous potential if they can bridge the gap between different towns and cities. “You can go almost anywhere in the state in under an hour, and that’s pretty impressive,” she says. “We could be really connected.” Overall, they’re looking forward to the new year and building on their progress. “It seems like we have been successful at creating a dialogue about reproductive health care,” she says. “And that’s really the goal – to hear voices you might not hear all the time because we just haven’t had the space for that. I think The Woman Project is definitely going to continue and keep creating those spaces.” TheWomanProject.org –Marrissa Ballard

The Volvo Ocean Race is a fierce and decades-old competition, meant to challenge the greatest sailors all over the world. The winning team must outsmart and sail harder than all the other competitors to get the glory of seeing their names etched onto the Ocean Race Trophy. Sailors dedicate months and years to prepare for this race, sailing thousands of nautical miles, crossing four oceans, and stopping at 12 remarkable host cities. In Bloom Petals Farm owner Thanh Luu ditches chemicals for greener bouquet
Thanh Luu, owner of Petals Farm in West Kingston, moved to Rhode Island in 2013. She wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do career-wise but was sure of her care for the environment. That summer, she decided to grow mostly veggies and two beds of flowers on a small piece of land. During her second year she dedicated half the land to flowers, and soon realized that that was where her grower’s heart was. From Petals Farm, where she grows tens of thousands of specialty plants on an acre plot of land, Luu is devoted to keeping every stage of the growing process au natural. “Every single year just confirms that I’m meant to be growing flowers,” she says. What drives her is a chance to connect customers to growing practices and to the people

growing the flowers we buy. “As a consumer, we go out and buy flowers and don’t really understand what’s behind it, you just connect with the person behind the counter. I want to focus on building that connection between the consumer and the process in the field.” This is Luu’s fifth season of growing, and within that time she has amassed a following of customers who appreciate the love and work that goes into farming without the aid of harmful sprays, which can ease the growing process but do so at the expense of workers’ and consumers’ health. Considering that much of the cut-flower industry uses chemicals that require workers to wear masks and body suits, Luu decided, “to make sure that me and my workers are surrounded by safe products and
that they are exposed fully and purely to the crop and not having to be covered in another layer.” The flowers they grow are healthy, beautiful, and safe for consumers to smell or eat as long as they’re naturally non-poisonous. “I know that if I’m going to sell something that I want to convey and encourage joy and happiness, I want it to be a pure product.” Her dedication to natural growing doesn’t come without its losses, but Luu is understanding. For her, it’s all about bringing it back to the basics and utilizing her land as efficiently as possible. “It’s a lot of work, but I don’t regret one bit. I don’t complain one bit, I love it. It’s been a great journey and I want to keep going with it.” West Kingston, PetalsFarm.com –Emily Buonaiuto

Old Mountain X-Games Evan Mansolillo is leading the way to a bigger, better skatepark in Wakefield
24
SORhodeIsland.com • May 2018
Evan Mansolillo continues to give back to Old Mountain Field, the skatepark he’s long called home
the fundraiser managed to sell the place out and raise $10,000 for the skatepark – doubling the amount he and his team have raised in four years. Not only has Mansolillo made strides within the skating community through his revamping of Old Mountain Field park, but the 20-year-old also offers skating lessons and camps through his new business New England Skate Station. Based in Southern Rhode Island, NESS provides year-round lessons to anyone over the age of five, weather permitting. Camps will be offered
in the summertime multiple times a week though a partnership with local parks and recreation departments. With such great success, I had to ask when the park will finally meet the standards of the contemporary skater. “I will be satisfied when we get our bowl – essentially a swimming pool specifically built for skating,” Mansolillo explains. “Right now, I have to get up and drive an hour just to skate a bowl. It will be nice to not have to do that.” Wakefield, NewEnglandSkateStation.com –Ava Callery

For most of his life, Wakefield resident Evan Mansolillo has been on his skateboard. Since the sixth grade, Mansolillo found himself deeply connected with the Southern Rhode Island skate community. Within that community, many have called the Old Mountain Field skatepark home. Since its original construction in early 2000, however, the park was due for renovation – something that Mansolillo recognized. Four years ago, during his junior year of high school, he dreamed up a plan. “My advisor asked: If you could do a big project on anything, what would it be?” he says. At the time, he was a student at East Bay Met, and he saw that although local skaters were getting better, their smalltown park remained outdated. Within just a few months, Mansolillo managed to curate his first fundraiser for Old Mountain Field: a competition he hosted at the skatepark that raised $4,000 in just one day. “The town needed to see there was enough of a movement to make these changes for the park, and I think we showed that.” The original plan for Mansolillo and his committee of skaters was to break the divide between the park and the unused street hockey rink. “That was the first big thing – we doubled the size of the park with that alone,” Mansolillo explains. After its construction in 2015, the South County native found that Old Mountain Field could benefit from even more additions to the skatepark, including new rails, picnic tables, and ledges – features that any skater, regardless of experience, could use. For Mansolillo, it’s been the best venture of his life. “It feels like a bigger [skating] community now after all the work we’ve done.” Since the first fundraiser in 2014, Mansolillo has hosted multiple competitions for Old Mountain Field park. His most recent, and most successful, event took place at the Ocean Mist in Matunuck this past January. Between multiple sets by Newport-based band Those Guys and raffles from local skate shops and businesses,

DOESN’T MATTER
The state’s newest tourism campaign finds success by going big on small By Tony Pacitti
W
40
SORhodeIsland.com • May 2018
Production on the campaign videos began last summer and is still ongoing. So far 14 videos have been released. Each follows an identical formula: open on a tight shot of a particular attraction, fast zoom out to an aerial shot, the slogan “Fun-Sized” appears, and a six-note jingle plays. The activities cover all seasons and interests, like bird watching on Block Island, bouldering in Lincoln Woods, the music and art scenes in Providence, surfing in Newport, tubing at Yawgoo Valley. “Everyone’s idea of fun is different,” says Salamano. “And there’s no other state so small that you can do so much in such a little amount of time.” The text treatment and the musical style of the jingle vary depending on what’s being promoted; think a dude ranch font and country western twang for horseback riding in Goddard Park, or heavy metal lettering and riffs for an iron pour at the Steel Yard. “We obviously did a lot of prep work,” explains Salamano, who joined Commerce Corp several months after Cooler and Warmer. “Tourism is such an important part of this state.” According to Salamano, the state had 24 million visitors in 2016 and one out of every eight Rhode Islanders
Nail Communications worked with RI Commerce Corp, Westerly filmmakers Gnarly Bay, and Providence photographer Jesse Burke to create the state’s new tourism campaign
works in some field relating directly to the tourism industry. Wisecracks about Cooler and Warmer aside, the real stakes were maintaining Rhode Island’s visibility and appeal to those millions of potential 2018 visitors. That meant thinking aggressively – and modernly – about how to approach this campaign and how people consume digital content. Research was done to determine the perfect seven-second run time for each of the videos, just long enough to tell a story without overstaying their welcome. The campaign has targeted states across the Northeast, and cities like DC, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Raleigh, and Denver, with paid ads running on popular websites TripAdvisor, Yankee’s NewEngland.com, Lonely Planet, and
Photo courtesy of RI Commerce Corp.
hen the state’s new “Fun-Sized” tourism campaign debuted on social media, the comments could be interpreted as a whole lot of light bulbs going on over the collective heads of Rhode Islanders everywhere. The tagline seemed to have been there all along, hiding under our own noses. “We have to be us,” says Lara Salamano, chief marketing officer at Rhode Island Commerce Corp. Working with award-winning Providence advertising agency Nail Communications – the firm who, among other things, famously split up candy duo Mike and Ike in a successful campaign in 2012 – and Gnarly Bay, a film and video production team out of Westerly, RI Commerce Corp managed to capture the spirit of the state’s appeal. Of course Rhode Island is “Fun-Sized.” Why didn’t someone think of this sooner? The state’s small size has long been a source of tongue in cheek pride – think t-shirts that declare “Don’t Mess With Rhode Island Either,” with the shape of the state smack in the heart of a to-scale outline of Texas; or “Rhode Island: 3% Bigger at Low Tide.” Why not embrace that core quirk on a national level? To be sure, the elephant in the room was 2016’s appropriately maligned “Cooler and Warmer” campaign. The backlash was swift and fierce, with outrage directed at the campaign’s cost, the inclusion of b-roll footage in a promotional video from Massachusetts and of a mysterious skateboarder in Iceland, and the fact that Milton Glaser – famous for the “I Love New York” logo – was tagged to create an off-tone slogan and logo instead of turning to the state’s homegrown crop of art and design talent. Considering the anger over Cooler and Warmer, this campaign really needed to stick the landing. More than just “being us,” it had to bear the burden of expectations most state tourism campaigns don’t have to deal with. Earlier this year, the first batch of the Fun-Sized videos made their appearances online. They lived up to their title – short, high energy, and clearly coming from a place of personal love for all things Rhody. The best part? Not a single Nordic kickflip in sight.
ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
Fodor’s among others. The total cost of the campaign has been $1,875,000, which includes $250,000 for the first 18 videos and media buys across web and TV, plus print ads shot by local photographer Jesse Burke through the end of June. When we spoke with Salamano, the campaign had already brought in $800,000 in hotel bookings (that was in late March after a string of successive weekly snow storms, so at least some folks had summer on the brain). Salamano was quick to point out that that’s just a portion of what they’ll spend when you take into account the money those visitors will drop on food and entertainment at local busniesses during their stay. Another dozen ads are set to be filmed in the coming months. The team plans to shoot the state’s warmer months and, later in the year, some more season-specific attractions. There’s a lot to compete with in New England alone – Maine calls itself Vacationland, for crying out loud – but “Fun-Sized” seems to be telling the rest of the country what locals have known all along: it’s not about how big your state is, it’s what you do in it.

ike many coastal towns across Rhode Island, Westerly has long welcomed visitors from near and far – and it’s not hard to imagine why. This charming beachfront community is teeming with character, distinctive villages and neighborhoods, and local pride. But downtown Westerly seems to be having a moment, or as some locals will better describe, launching a new era. “Westerly is definitely a growing community,” says business owner Annie Philbrick. “Many younger people live there as it is less expensive, and fun to walk to the bars and around town.” Philbrick has been the owner of Bank Square Books in nearby Mystic, Connecticut for more than a decade, but in 2016, she opened a sister shop, Savoy Bookshop & Café, in Westerly. The whimsical, independent bookstore feels like a trek back in time with tall, handsome bookcases, high ceilings, near floor-to-ceiling windows, and cozy reading nooks inviting bibliophiles and wandering visitors alike to relax and stay a while. The neighborhood bookstore was the brainchild of investor Charles “Chuck” Royce, best known for spearheading the revival of the Ocean House in nearby Watch Hill.

“We were asked by Chuck Royce, who owns the space, that if he built us a bookstore, would we manage it,” explains Philbrick. Royce was impressed with Bank Square Books and knew a similar concept would thrive in Westerly, and the timing was just right. “There was a bookstore in Westerly that closed and the town was anxious for another – and they have proven their love for an indie bookstore.” Royce has been coming to the area since the early 1980s, and there’s no doubt that when he reopened the grand Ocean House hotel in 2010, the southwestern shoreline of Washington County had reclaimed a bygone era. “Community” seems to be a running theme among businesses here. Alan and Jennifer Brinton were among some of the earlier business owners to invest in what some are calling Westerly’s new chapter. The couple felt complete support from the town when they opened Grey Sail Brewing there in 2011. “We live here. We are raising four children here. We love the town and knew we weren’t going to be moving,” says Jennifer. They bought a space on Canal Street for the brewery and have since bought its two neighboring buildings. “We’ve done a ton of improvements. From town officials to neighbors to passersby, people have been so pleased with what we’ve done. It’s about being a good community partner and good neighbor,” she says. “It’s home for us, but it’s also home as our patrons are from here – school teachers, residents, retirees, neighbors who have summer homes here.” She also acknowledges that the business community, with its diverse offerings, has made Westerly a more attractive destination for visitors from across Rhode Island and well beyond. “We’ve become a tourist destination,” she says, adding that the brewery sometimes acts as the de facto “North End Tourist Center,” as patrons often ask where they should go to eat and what there is to see and do in Westerly. “We want that synergy, to be a tourist attraction that brings people in and hopefully they stay. They’re coming in for different reasons. We hope to say, ‘Discover us too.’” Jennifer has seen a lot of changes – all for the good – since first moving here 18 years ago. “What a tremendous revival this town has had – resurgence is the word. There aren’t vacant windows to walk by on High Street anymore.” Jennifer also credits the local chamber of commerce for being tremendously supportive and that the organization doesn’t just care about the businesses but the people, and the people who support the businesses. “There’s this great cohesiveness. I think all of those things are in place to make it work and grow. I hope we’re at the cusp of the beginning of an era.” Adam Mercer and his partners John H. Wiedenheft III, and his son John, launched Tapped Apple Winery more than 10 years ago. In 2016, they wanted to expand to a brick and mortar location and chose Westerly, calling it a “vibrant, growing community.” He says the business community here is more like family. “There are so many things great about

Westerly… No matter who you are or what your story is, there is just an unspoken bond that everyone seems to have. This includes the town management as well,” says Mercer. “My partners and I have consistently been welcomed into this community not only by our new found friends and guests, but also the organizations that want to see the growth like the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and the Westerly-Pawcatuck Downtown Business Association. I believe the efforts of forward thinking business owners and the support of the community and the aforementioned organizations will continue this town’s growth for more than just a ‘moment.’” Dana and Mark Carvey moved to Westerly two years ago for the abundance of young people, the vibrant downtown and the ‘little bit of everything you need’ that the town offers. The couple was eager to open a pinball bar and had also considered New Haven, Mystic, and New London as possible locations. Ultimately, Westerly won out. “The vibe in Westerly is a cross between New London and Mystic. It’s small; I like that you can walk everywhere. It’s safe and near the beach – it’s the perfect location,” says Dana. When a commercial space on Railroad Avenue became available, just steps from High Street (the main thoroughfare), the couple sprang into action. Flip Side Pinball Bar has been a hit with locals and visitors alike since the doors opened, and their biggest supporters, says Dana, are their neighbors. “Everybody talks to everybody. No one is competing with one another… we’re all on the same page,” she says about the local business community. “It’s always, ‘How can we all do something together?’” Case in point? Colin Bennett, who owns The Malted Barley on High Street with his wife Stephanie, liked playing pinball so much with his son that Dana and Mark installed two pinball machines from Flip Side at the craft beer and pretzel pairing outpost. The action was more than neighborly; it organically cross-promotes. It’s not just new businesses that make Westerly extraordinary; it’s music, arts, events, and unique experiences. The newly branded Knickerbocker Music Center (formerly the Knickerbocker Café, but usually just called “The Knick”) was first established in 1933. Although the building completed a major renovation 2009, the center’s executive director, Mark Connolly, says the plan all along was for the façade to remain identical to the original. The club has its roots in blues music, and such wide-ranging artists as Count Basie and Stevie Ray Vaughan played here quite a bit. “Our major push over the three, four years since we took the reins has been to bring the club back into the community,” explains Connolly. “It had only been open on the weekends. We now have all different genres to bring

in all different ages of guests.” Connelly credits Sean Spellman, curator of the Westerly Sound Concert Series, with bringing new talent – and new customers – to the theater. “He was able to get us to reach out to a younger audience. We are still true to the blues but more than half are not just blues related, which is bringing in younger people, which is good for The Knick.” In keeping with their mission to be a music-based community center, The Knick became a non-profit organization, formed in partnership with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School. Connolly says their goal is to open a music school in Westerly’s United Theatre, which is building a new arts education center onsite. “There are a lot of pieces as to what’s going on in Westerly, arts- and culture-wise… and we’re one of those pieces making Westerly a destination.” Royce is also financially supporting the United Theatre’s multimillion dollar renovation. Officially renamed the Ocean Community United Theatre, the former vaudeville theater dates back to 1926 and will hold events and performances while being the home of the music education center. The theater already hosts special events and this summer will continue the Movies in the Park series in conjunction with Westerly Library and Wilcox Park. Last September, one wall of The Knick became the biggest canvas in the inaugural Bricks and Murals festival, a five-day event which included live mural painting by more than 100 artists, live music, a food stroll, and a block party. The Knick’s history was portrayed in a painted piece covering the entire wall,

Last September, artists from all over the country came to Westerly-Pawcatuck for Bricks and Murals, a weekend of public art installations dedicated to the area’s history
measuring 114 feet wide by 20 feet high. The event was a rousing success. It’s events like these, says Lisa Konicki, president of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce, that solidify Westerly as an arts and cultural destination. Konicki says Brick and Murals, River Glow (when floating bonfires illuminate the Pawcatuck River), the Virtu Art Festival (happening in Wilcox Park this month on May 26 and 27 and will feature the fine works of 180 artists/craftspeople), and the proposed “gateway project,” which would showcase the bond between Westerly and neighboring Pawcatuck, Connecticut with an iconic, artistic piece on the Pawcatuck River Bridge, are examples of events that celebrate the area’s culture and history. Events like these are crucial to growing the local economy. Konicki says a study conducted at the Virtu Art Festival showed the event generated $6.6 million in economic impact. The study also provided insight into who is visiting Westerly. More than half of the Virtu visitors came from out of the immediate area and a quarter of them were first time visitors. Westerly’s magnetism hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2016, Movoto.com, a national online real estate company, ranked Westerly as the best place to live in Rhode Island, citing its effervescent dining scene, low unemployment, student-to-teacher ratio, low crime rate, and overall quality of life. “I moved here from New York City, and I immediately fell in love with Westerly,” says Elissa Englund Sweet, the marketing director at the Savoy. “There is always something going on downtown, from art events to music to community gatherings, and I love the diversity of restaurants we have in town as well.” She’s found the town to be ideal for work and play. “I think downtown Westerly has a really artistic, fun vibe, and I'm really excited about some of the new things that have opened up in town as well, including Flip Side and the United Theatre, which is undergoing a fabulous renovation this year. In addition, of course, I cannot get enough of the beach. I go a few times a week, even in the winter, and I love how we have both a cool downtown and a beach community in Westerly.”

“Time marches on,” Dolly Parton said as Truvy in Steel Magnolias, “and sooner or later you realize it’s marching across your face.” As sad as it is for me to admit, I’m at that tipping point where “it will happen one day” has become “it’s happening now.” It’s time to ask myself a serious question: What would Dolly do? She’d pull out the big guns and she’d fight the march of time. So that’s exactly what I did. In this instance, “big guns” means a BBL laser, which I experienced at Facial Aesthetics Center of RI. BroadBand Light therapy is a laser treatment that treats discoloration like rosacea and sunspots, stimulating new collagen production in your skin. Long story short: it makes you look younger. But, it’s also a laser. A hot, hurty laser that I was going to let someone apply to my face a lot of times, in
the hopes that afterwards I would like what I saw in the mirror more than I did before. When Licensed Medical Esthetician Jennifer Amaral asked me what I wanted to concentrate on, I gestured to my face, with its ghostly little lines and sunspots, and said, “I want to fix all of this.” So she went to work and I went under the knife, literally. To start, Jennifer did a Dermaplane, which is a manual exfoliation of the face. Unlike a chemical exfoliation that dissolves the gunk, this uses a surgical blade to remove the top layer of dead skin and fine hair. Think of it like an old timey barbershop shave. It sounds a little scary, but it was totally painless, took only a couple of minutes, and left my face smooth and radiant. That alone would have been a huge step in the right direction for me, and the Dermaplane is usually done in

LET US MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE! combination with a facial, but can be done alone, too. After, we did a Hydrafacial, which is a fast and very effective facial treatment that deep cleans your pores and leaves your skin glowing from the inside out. Now my face was cleaned, prepped, and ready for the main event: the BBL laser. It went like this: a one-second hot zap, followed by a few seconds of cool, and then onto the next section. It didn’t feel like nothing, but it didn’t feel nearly as bad as I imagined a laser on my face would feel. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. Jennifer concentrated on rosacea and brown spots on my face and the emerging marionette lines around my mouth. After, to calm my skin down, she applied a Skinceuticals Phyto Masque to soothe redness and inflammation, followed by a regimen of high-powered Skinceuticals products: Phyto Gel, Hydrating B5 Gel and Ultra Clear SPF. Jennifer had warned me that I might have a few days of downtime, and that I needed to be vigilant about sun exposure for three weeks. I felt like I looked very red when I left the spa, but when I met a friend for dinner immediately afterwards, I had to point out the color before she noticed. For a couple of days, I felt tender and looked a little swollen, but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable leaving the house. Through the next couple of weeks, as my skin fully repaired itself, I started noticing subtle differences. My skin looked plumper. The tone was more even. Those tiny lines filled themselves in. I had a glow that was definitely new. The amount of makeup I wanted to wear lessened each day, until it was just tinted moisturizer and mascara. Very unlike Dolly. And very unlike my normal self. This is a war I might just win.

I had to complete eight facial treatments in eight consecutive weeks and provide video clips of all those treatments, along with before and after photographs. This South County House Seaside style meets innovative design for a masterpiece in East Matunuck
Jeff Sweenor is used to making people’s dreams come true. The owner of Sweenor Builders has been creating custom homes throughout Rhode Island for nearly 30 years. But when This Old House selected his South County-based business to
build their prestigious 2017 Idea House in East Matunuck, it was his turn to live out a dream. “It was thrilling to work with the This Old House team to build a unique home that celebrates the best of coastal living,” says Sweenor.
This Old House, the famed television program and magazine, began the Idea House series in 2015. Built from the ground up, the Idea House is a high concept home that integrates traditional and regional design-build elements with modern day sensibilities. The

first Idea House in Rhode Island, last year’s eight month long Beach House project, was a creative collaboration between Wakefield-based Sweenor Builders, Providence-based Union Studio Architecture & Community Design, Connecticut-based Denise Enright Interior Design, and several This Old House sponsors and contributors. The details throughout the Idea House are nothing short of breaktaking. The Shingle style house, a quintessential New England design that dates back to the 19th century, features traditional elements like wood shingle siding, a gambrel roof, curved walls, and a massive wrap-around porch. The beach house theme seamlessly blends an easy living layout with an elegant
aesthetic, and classic architecture with ultra modern elements. With a focus on aging in place and accommodating multi-generational families – two of the most desireable design-build trends – the entire house offers meticulous details at every corner. The first floor features a gourmet kitchen complete with a wet bar and a center island, and beautifully flows into the gorgeous living room. The open-floor plan, created for both everyday comfort and entertaining, offers easy access throughout both areas. Vaulted ceilings, built-in cabinets, and the creative use of wall coverings offer each room its own sense of place and function. The spacious master bedroom and bathroom
are also found on the first floor. Two additional bedrooms are on the second floor, a thoughtful open-aired space with a separate laundry that offers privacy and luxe comfort. The whimsical third floor, the aptly called bunk room, features built-in beds that are ideal for younger visitors. Unique and custom details can be found throughout the 3,200 square foot home: a bonus room built over the garage and designed as a game room; a mudroom with a dog-washing station that can double as a utility sink; a backyard deck off the kitchen that leads to a patio with a built-in fire pit; an outdoor shower; and a show-stopping mutl-season room with a stunning gas

fireplace. The entire house is also a modern model for smart living: wireless lighting, individual room temperature, and alarm systems are controlled wirelessly via mobile apps. In taking this build from concept to completion, Sweenor Builders has created the ultimate South County dream home, combining the latest trends with classic New England style. Inspiration can be fleeting, but the lucky owners that now call this house home are sure to find it in every room. This Old House recently announced the next collaboration with Sweenor Builders: the 2018 Idea House, a Narragansett build less than a mile from the beach. “Our firm is deeply vested in creating vibrant village neighborhoods in South County,” says Sweenor. “These collaborations with This Old House are truly special projects for us and our communities.”

A Little Bit of Everything Meritage serves up something for every appetite in East Greenwich
Lobster Cardinale

were sipping the classic version, but we prefer the Skinny Margarita’s fresh squeezed lime juice, Patron tequila and Cointreau. It’s a strong drink, and I only need one. The appetizers at Meritage are always our favorite part of the meal. They’re all good – and we know, because we’ve tried just about everything. On this visit, we opted for a newer menu item, the Au Gratin Grilled Pizza ($14). The pie has a thin crust with a nice, chewy interior and is topped with perfectly cooked potato, bacon, red onion, and scallions. We also ordered a family favorite, the Buffalo Chicken Skewers ($12.50). The chicken is moist, tender and has just enough buffalo sauce to give the skewers a kick. The homemade blue cheese dressing is a welcome addition. I asked my parents to recommend their favorite dish and they picked the Lobster Cardinale ($25). Capellini pasta is tossed with a very rich cognac tomato cream sauce, then is topped with lobster, shrimp, and scallops. It was a big portion, and the cream sauce makes it quite heavy. My brother had the Herb Encrusted Cod ($23), and my mother tried the Halibut Special ($26). My brother’s cod came with mussels and shrimp and was served in a tomato-clam broth.
Pan Seared Scallops
My mother’s halibut was also herb-encrusted and drizzled with a lemon-infused olive oil. My father ordered the Kabob Trio ($24) which included shrimp, scallop, and beef tenderloin kabobs grilled with garlic butter. When it came time for dessert, we wanted to try something different. The Dessert Pizza is a family go-to and well worth the calories, but instead we sampled the S’Mores Pie. The pie was quite a spectacle: the top combines marshmallow fluff and mini marshmallows, which is lit on fire with a crème brûlée torch. Everyone in the dining room stopped to watch the conflagration. Underneath the marshmallow topping, there is premium coffee ice cream and a tasty graham cracker crust. Next time you are looking for something to eat in East Greenwich but can’t

East Greenwich has become a serious dining destination in Rhode Island. With new restaurants popping up almost monthly, the town’s restaurant scene is constantly evolving. When I say there is something for everyone, I am not joking: The variety of cuisines you can sample are multitudinous, and every taste and demographic has a place to eat. But what if you are looking for a restaurant to please a wide range of people? My pick is Meritage. In vintner-speak, a “meritage” wine is a blend of varietals. Just as the name suggests, Meritage offers a great mix of food, cocktails, wine, and service. My family has been eating here since it took over the Mr. Marco space decades ago. Back then, we went for the jumbo-sized margaritas, flavored martinis, and fantastic appetizer selection. My parents still go for those reasons, and they are close with many of the staff members. They even have a favorite waitress, Jen. They often sit in the large bar area for discounted appetizers during happy hour. For an early weekday dinner, my parents, my brother, and I decided to relive our Meritage memories and ordered a round of Skinny Margaritas ($12). Most of the other guests

The kitchen has experimented with the gamut of toppings: there’s the usual Margherita and Chicken Parmesan, but there’s also the feta-infused Greek Pizza, an Eggplant Parm, and The Matunuck, which is dense with mozzarella and Italian sausage. The kitchen even turned out a one-off pizza covered in corned beef. While mainlanders might not be aware, the new pizzeria isn’t Finnegan’s first attempt at pie-making. Last year, he opened the Block Island Pizza Pie Company on Corn Neck Road. That location is seasonal and serves pan pizzas, which Finnegan feels are better suited to tourists on the go. In contrast, the Matunuck location will be open year-round, seven days a week, and specializes in New York-style crusts. Matunuck, Facebook: Matunuck Pizza Pie Company.

Narragansett Releases Fresh Catch
Narragansett Beer has a new iconic image in its collection. Along with its porter, decorated with a tall ship, and the It’s About Time IPA, with a Victorian clock, there’s now Fresh Catch, a pint of blonde ale advertised with a lively red lobster. The 128-year-old brewery released Fresh Catch in March as a tribute to New England mariners. It’s dry-hopped with citra and has a grapefruit finish, making it the perfect complement for whitefish and (you guessed it) lobster. Narragansett also offers beer-based recipes on its website, including a Fresh Catch–battered Fish & Chips. Fresh Catch is available at pubs and distributors across the state. NarragansettBeer.com

A Second Serving Pamela Machon talks about the surprising comeback of Sophie’s Brewhouse
74
SORhodeIsland.com • May 2018
Brewhouse is a busy roadside café, with cases full of house-made baked goods. We caught up with Machon to talk about the coffee shop’s revival and her ambitious new plan. What was it like reopening Sophie’s? The second time around, it was a happy accident. I had missed [the café] so much. I could tell you all of our regular customers by their first name. When I closed, I received so many letters and messages on Facebook. When word got out that we were opening again, people were so relieved. It’s very humbling. I basically took the building
back, and I said, “All right, Let’s give it another run.” And I gave myself seven years. How much did you change? Everything changed. The whole front changed. We have beautiful Italian cases, where we keep all of our pastries and pies. None of that was there before, even when I owned it. I had a case, but it wasn’t as nice as these. My husband did a great job. All of our lumber came from a local saw mill, which is right in Exeter. The tops of the tables, all of the bars, all the woodwork you see in there is local.
Photography by Brandon Harmon
Pamela Machon can tell you some stories. The former hairdresser and daycare operator opened Sophie’s Coffee & Café in 2008. She had always loved baking, and with the help of her daughters, Machon saw Sophie’s thrive for seven years. But when her parents passed away, she was overwrought. She closed Sophie’s down, thinking that would be the end of it. Yet when her successor failed to sustain the business, Machon faced a crossroads: try to sell a run-down building as-is, or resuscitate Sophie’s Brewhouse and make it shine. She chose the latter, commissioning her contractor-husband to rebuild the interior. Today, Sophie’s
A cure for the Wardrobe Blues…
I understand that local vendors are important to you. My grandfather used to say to me, “When you use a local person, you’re putting that person’s kid through college.” We try to use as many local vendors as we possibly can. Our coffee comes from Mills Coffee [in Providence]. They’ve been here since 1860. I think their coffee is amazing. [Owner] Susan Mills and I have become good friends. And we do our own nitro brew now. We do breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, and everything is baked in-house, except for our bagels. If someone asks what is in something, I want to be able to tell them. You’ve recently applied for a liquor license. Any big plans? We’re adding a bar in the back. We’re going to do outdoor fire pits, horseshoes, corn hole. The land that Sophie’s is on is four acres. Once you go into the back, it’s very flat. We’re adding a bigger kitchen, more bathrooms. We want it to be like a mini-[Charlestown] Rathskeller. I’m not trying to compete with anybody; we have our own thing. But we’re in Exeter, so, you know – let’s play in the woods. Sophie’s is in kind of a quiet location, but the parking lot always seems full. Who are your customers? I wish I could say. To be honest, 75 percent are coming from Charlestown going to work. It’s mostly local people, and word of mouth. I see my own kids when they come in in the morning to get their coffee. No matter who they are, everybody is greeted when they come through the door, and you’re thanked when you leave. That’s how I was raised. We’ve got that down pat.
