RIDE THE WAVE Westerly’s Sharon White makes art out of old and broken surfboards Artist Sharon White knows the feeling of “dancing on the waves” and being one with the ocean on a surfboard. But she also loves painting.

Nine months ago, she combined her love of the two, and began repurposing old and damaged surfboards – a unique concept for this region that is already popular in California, Hawaii, and other states and countries.

“Surfers bond with their surfboards, and each board carries a vibe and memories,” says Sharon, a Westerly native and self-taught artist.

The process of transforming a surfboard into a new work of art involves cleaning and removing any existing surf wax, drafting a design, outlining it with chalk, painting it, and finishing with a clear protective coating. Sharon also creates designs on new surfboards, which start with a foam blank and an acrylic base color. Once the art has been created, it is covered with fiberglass and epoxy resin coatings.

“Each piece is different and takes approximately two to three weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. Commissioned pieces will take more time, and communication of each step of the process

with the owner of the custom-designed board is key,” Sharon explains.

Recently, a customer brought her a vintage Tropics surfboard from Maui. “The board was going to be specifically used as wall art. She wanted a tribal turtle design with a sting ray in the center of the turtle.”

Sharon also creates her own original designs on old surfboards that she finds and that other people bring to her. She hopes to “someday have a design purchased by a major board company.”

The Stonington, Connecticut resident is also busy creating original works on canvas, reverse painting on glass, and working on her own online clothing line (found at ShopVida.com), which was prompted by her studies in theater/costume design at URI. She took her parents’ advice and went to college, she admits, to avoid becoming a “starving artist,” and since then has successfully managed to turn her creative passions into a business.

throughout the country as a professional musician, but dreamed of starting a chamber music festival in Rhode Island.

In a serendipitous moment, John took over Music on the Hill and re-established it as a festival.

“I was meeting RI-born musicians in every orchestra I played,” John explains his impetus for the festival. “It’s such a small state, so to play in orchestras where two, three, even four of the musicians are from Rhode Island? That’s unusual.”

According to John, Rhode Island’s public school teachers deserve the credit for the number of Rhode Island musicians playing professionally. “It’s a testament to Rhode Island’s education system, our dedicated teachers, and our youth orchestras. Music on the Hill is a way to give back to the community that supported us.”

The festival program mixes classic composers like Bach and Mozart with lesser known ones. Seven concerts are presented locations throughout the state over the course of six days, including East Greenwich and Westerly. Each concert program is unique and played by a chamber orchestra featuring Rhode Island-born musicians alongside those who consider Rhode Island a second home.

“So many non-Rhode Island musicians want to be a part of the festival,” he says with a laugh. “They see my Facebook feed full of beautiful pictures from Rhode Island, with its beaches and delicious food, and they want to come.”

For John, who is based in Ohio and plays bass for the Columbus Symphony, Music on the Hill is a way to say thanks to the community that supported him from the halls of Toll Gate all the way to NYC’s prestigious Julliard School.

“The Ocean State should be proud of the musicians its produced and the education system that supported the music,” he says. “That’s the untold story of Rhode Island.” Find more details at MusicOnTheHillRI.org -Karen Greco

Paint the Town If you’re driving down Route 108 in Wakefield, you’ve likely passed the mural on the side of Dennis Moffitt Painting. Over the course of the last decade, it’s been covered with everything from crazy patterns comprised of stripes and polka dots, to a Patriots tribute that captured national attention. What started as simply a fun way to grab potential customers from the roadside has evolved into something bigger.

“I like to entertain people, to make people happy,” says owner Mike Moffitt. In 2006, shortly after they bought and moved into the building on Kingstown Road, they painted their first mural: Pumpkins in honor of Halloween. Every four to six weeks, they try to paint a new one; some celebrate a holiday or sporting event, some are humorous and others commemorative, and while most are painted by Mike or employees, some are commissioned out to muralists, companies, or community members. The only rule, says Mike, is that it must be completed within a day.

“It’s usually spur-of-the-moment,” he admits of the planning process. “An idea either grabs you and clicks or it doesn’t.”

One such idea, which Mike cites as one of his favorites, was the Block Island Tunnel. “It’s a joke that when tourists come to town, they’re always asking for directions to the ferry.” So, they painted the entrance to this mythic tunnel, complete with an exit sign listing stops for Champlin’s and Ballard’s, and a $5 charge for cars.

While laugh-worthy pieces like these are popular, most recently, local news spotlighted DMP’s wall for one mural in particular.

In March, a DMP salesman’s nephew, Aidan Mulligan, was severely injured in a car crash in South Kingstown. His friends and classmates decided to use “the most famous wall in town” for a show of support. The result was a vibrant message: The words “Aidan…

However, these murals aren’t the only example of DMP’s commitment to community. The third-generation custom paint

The Quononoquott Garden Club celebrates 70 years with its Jamestown Garden Tour

The Quononoquott Garden Club (QGC) marks its platinum anniversary this year with the club’s signature Jamestown Garden Tour returning on June 15 from 10am to 3pm. The event features self-guided tours of meticulously manicured gardens at private properties peppered throughout Conanicut Island.

“The gardens can be found in different neighborhoods through Jamestown – a few waterfronts, some centrally located, some on the east side and some on the west side of the island,” explains Joan Vessella, QGC’s publicity chairwoman. The gardens are a closely guarded secret until participants pick up their guide the day of the event, but both green thumbs and novices alike are sure to be inspired by

the host of native perennials, colorful annuals, garden sculpture, shrubs, and overflowing containers to be discovered in myriad settings.

Along with its annual plant sale, the tour helps fund the QGC’s commitment “to nurture the civic spaces on beautiful Jamestown for the enjoyment and pleasure of its inhabitants and visitors.” Throughout the year, club members (there are around 50) break into beautification teams that divide and conquer by tending to specific areas in public view around the island – clearing brush, improving soil, watering, planting, trimming, and tending to flowers and plants. Locations include the Jamestown Fire Department Memorial Museum, the Town Cemetery, Jamestown Town

Hall, the planters at Veteran’s Memorial Park, and the “welcome sign garden” located at the entry to town via the Claiborne Pell/ Newport Bridge. The club is also excited about a new pollinator garden, which has been planted to attract bees, butterflies, and birds.

Dianne Rugh, QGC’s co-president, is excited about the upcoming tour as it is only the fourth one in seven decades. “We are a working planters club,” she explains. The tours have historically coincided with milestone anniversaries, so on their 70th, here’s your opportunity to see and be inspired to start or improve your own garden this season.

Able Seaman Sail to Prevail teaches sailing to students with disabilities In 1982, Paul Callahan started an innovative program in Newport – Sail to Prevail, which provides “therapeutic sailing” instruction to people with disabilities. Since then, more than 21,000 amateur sailors have taken the helm. Such disabilities are wide ranging; some have Down syndrome, epilepsy, or terminal cancer. Many have physical disabilities – including Paul himself, who slipped on a wet floor in college and was paralyzed from the chest down.

“Since my accident,” says Paul, who gets around by electric wheelchair, “I have a better understanding how much it means to share these things that I’ve been able to accomplish – like going to the Paralympics or working for Goldman-Sachs in New

York. Sailing is just a wonderful way to drive some of these things that I’ve been fortunate enough to experience through this modality.”

This summer, more than 1,000 more children and adults will learn the art of sailing through specially outfitted, 20-foot vessels. Paul insists that the adaptive equipment is actually fairly simple, and many students remove helpful elements as they master certain skills.

“We’ve used this same technology for more than 20 years,” Paul says. “It starts with standard levers and lines, anything you would find in a physics book. While a newer boat may have great technology, it also takes away from the necessity of the disabled person to do the work themselves.

The idea is to make it safe and enjoyable,

but equally important is to challenge their limits as an individual or as a team.”

Sail to Prevail already partners with 26 different organizations, and two additional operations take place on Nantucket and in Cambridge, Massachusetts, thanks to the Harvard Varsity Sailing Team. But after so many years of instruction, Paul and his team are starting to study their own methodology. In years to come, Paul hopes to expand the program to far-flung communities.

“We’re going to start to understand why [the program] has worked, so we can share it with other programs around the country,” he says. “We’re trying to prove – academically – why it’s been so successful.”

This month signals the debut of an exciting addition to the Jamestown Newport Ferry fleet: Coastal Queen, a newly refurbished 140-passenger vessel – with quite the backstory.

Bill Munger – CMM, Founder, and President of Conanicut Marine Services Inc. (CMS) – had been looking for a solution to the growing water transportation needs of the ferry system, which his company operates. It was a tall order; the boat needed to not only serve as a passenger ferry, but be used as a charter and for weddings, plus accessible to public landing sites and accommodate wheelchairs and bikes.

Enter Viking Queen, which had sailed Newport Harbor and lower Narragansett Bay since the ‘70s, carried spectators during America’s Cup Races in the ‘80s, changed ownership in 2010 and journeyed to New York, met a watery demise during

Hurricane Sandy, and then was towed up the Hudson, destined for a scrap pile.

Bill spotted the derelict ship on his search for a larger vessel and saw its potential. She had a shallow draft to dock at Rose Island Lighthouse, a stop on the popular ferry route, and a low freeboard for wheelchair boarding without extensive ramp systems. However, it wasn’t going to be an easy project.

After being towed to Wickford in 2016, the Queen underwent a makeover. The original machinery was removed and house structure redesigned, though Naval Architects Chris Melo and Ezra Smith kept most of its vintage 1900s look. North Kingstown’s Coastal Iron Works replaced the hull shell plating, while Luther’s Welding of Bristol constructed new fuel, water, and waste tanks. Then, the crowning jewel: a new name.

off ferry service that began back in 1995 – connecting Jamestown Village, Rose Island Lighthouse, Fort Adams State Park and two stops in downtown Newport – the new Coastal Queen will be offering reserved departures on a Scenic Bay Cruise run between 1 East Ferry Wharf in Jamestown and Perrotti Park,” says the CMS team. These scenic cruises will allow off-boarding for a quick lunch or shopping excursion into Newport or Jamestown, plus an on-board cash bar, and, of course, those unbeatable views of the bay.

Susan Jamison, who assists with marketing efforts, gushes, “I know the CMS folks are very excited to launch this larger ferry this summer.” But it’ll be so much more than just a new boat: After many years, Coastal Queen will finally return to home waters.

heard of it because it didn’t exist until this year. The brand-new festival will premiere June 11 on the Block Island waterfront, and attendees will be treated to screenings, talk-backs, multiple mixers, and a special

Rhode Island already hosts several established film festivals, as well as filmmaker challenges and regular screenings.

But most of these are held in and around Providence; the Block Island Film Festival is both an exotic New England retreat and a surprising collaboration – between local arts organizations and the Entertainment Studies program at UCLA. This unexpected pairing will help shine a light on apprentice auteurs; one winner of the student film competition will be invited to spend time with industry experts in Hollywood.

“We’re very excited and grateful to have UCLA’s Entertainment Studies’ involvement in the educational component of the film festival,” says Cassius Shuman, festival founder and a staff writer for the Block Island Times. “It is an esteemed school with a great and diverse film studies curriculum that is located at the film industry’s doorstep. This is an opportunity for a student filmmaker to take a step closer to realizing their dream.”

The festival will have a healthy professional presence as well: Submissions of shorts and feature-length films have been received from around the world, and many of the events are hosted by actress Kristin Carey, who has appeared in television series like Bones and The West Wing and has a close creative relationship with the Farrelly Brothers.

Unlike many such festivals, the Block Island lineup will have no particular theme, making it a grab-bag of different styles and tones. None of the films had been confirmed by press time, but the full schedule should be posted on the Festival website.

The best part of attending this inaugural event: You can tell everyone you know, “I used to go to that festival before it got big.” The festival takes place June 11-15 at various locations on Water Street, New Shoreham.

Say “aloha” to Rhode Island’s custom surfboard makers

Surfing is freedom. After all, the ocean belongs to everybody. The culture is chill and welcomes just about anybody. Gear is reasonable – a couple hundred bucks for a rookie longboard – and may last for years. You can use the same rash guard all summer, or for summers on end. And then there’s the feeling – the ebb and flow of the water, the rush of an oncoming wave, the pop-up, the extended arms, the rush of salty air as a comber propels you along its arc.

At the heart of surfing is the board itself, and nothing expresses freedom like those lustrous shapes and myriad decorations. Surfboards come in all styles; you can browse length, color, and number of fins. You can pick material and weight, color and pattern. More

than any glove or racket, the board becomes a surfer’s closest friend. For many, it’s a work of art that you happen to stand on.

Which is why surfboard makers are so conspicuously cool.

We talked with three Rhode Island-based crafters who make their living – or much of their living – shaping raw materials into professional wave-riding equipment. New England is home to some of the most diehard surfers in the country, and the market for personalized boards is surprisingly steady.

Here’s how these mavericks ply their trade.

David Levy LEVY SURF DESIGNS

THE START David is the true pioneer of board-making in Rhode Island.

He’s been hitting waves since the Golden Age of surfing in the early 1960s, and he spent many years as co-owner of the Watershed Surf Shop in Wakefield; his business partner was local surfing legend Peter Pan. In 1976, he wanted a particular shape and size for his own use. “I decided to cut up a longboard,” David recalls. “I tried to make a shortboard out of it. It came out all right, but I couldn’t ride it. It came out too narrow and too thin. But you gotta start somewhere.”

LESSONS LEARNED David watched other surfboard makers at work, but he earned most of his skills through patience and tenacity. He knew boards intimately, of course; in stages, David discovered surfing, winter surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding before most East Coasters had even heard of them. Yet mastering the precise cutting, sanding, and glassing techniques was a painstaking process. “There was no YouTube back then,” David says with a chuckle.

“Nobody would tell you anything, either. It was like a secret.” Today, Levy Surf Designs is based in Narragansett, and for many years Levy was the only full-time custom surfboard maker in the region.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE Over the decades, David has seen surfboard design evolve. He says they’re lighter and more maneuverable now, and that retro designs can feel like “Model Ts” on the water. He’s lost track of how many thousands of boards he’s made since founding LSD nearly 30 years ago, and he also dedicates much of his time to repairing boards, which can crack or shatter on undersea rocks. A custom board caters to a surfer’s particular style. “You get what you want,” he says. “It’s locally made, for the conditions here.”

TORA SURFBOARDS

THE START Born and raised in Newport, Neil Toracinta grew up skateboarding – and those rides often ended at the beach, so surfing was a natural extension. “As an outsider looking in,” says Neil, “you wouldn’t assume surfing is a common thing in the northeast. But it’s a lot bigger than most people probably think.” During his junior year in high school, he became interested in woodworking and manual construction. “That piqued my curiosity, into how surfboards are made.” He dissected an old longboard, ripping off the fiberglass and reusing its foam. “I tried to glass it myself,” he says, “and it went horribly. It was tacky, but it floated. And I still have it.”

LESSONS LEARNED At 18, Neil had to do a senior project. “They gave us really, really vague guidelines,” he says. “I chose making surfboards, because that was something I wanted to do anyway. And to get school credit to do it? That was just awesome.”

He made three or four boards, using “complete trial and error.” After college, Neil spent a few years working for corporate America, but he kept making boards, and friends started requesting them. At 26, he started building full-time. “If I didn’t do this now,” he realized, “I was just going to take on more responsibilities.”

TRICKS OF THE TRADE “Making boards in the Northeast forces you to be a master of all areas,” says Neil, who manages every aspect of the business himself and maintains a production schedule of about three to four weeks per order. Last year, he created more than 200 boards. “I have full control over every step, and it’s a challenge that I enjoy.

SPIRARE SURFBOARDS

The Spirare name is derived from the Latin “to expire”. Kevin says his practice of recycling ocean debris for the making of the fins on his board is his way of “breathing” new life into the surfboard industry.

THE START

Growing up in Baltimore, Kevin had easy access to Ocean City, Maryland, a surfing capital. The sport was just a summer hobby until he moved to Rhode Island to study architecture and fine arts at RISD. By 2002, he was an enthusiastic surfer, but he frowned at the polyurethane used in commercial boards.

“I realized they’re terrible materials,” says Kevin. “They’re very toxic.

They’ll stay in a landfill for 10,000 years. I wanted a more sustainable alternative.”

LESSONS LEARNED Kevin worked for an architect for several years, but he made a handful of wood-based surfboards on the side, mostly for friends. “Once I started developing the greener approach, I felt a need to expose it to more people and change the industry a bit,” he recalls. He started going to trade shows and met industry leaders from California.

“There’s a huge amount of design skill that came into play. A lot of stuff I had learned at RISD – ways of approaching a design problem.”

He was also confident in the value of wood, as pre-Columbian Hawaiians rode wooden surfboards for centuries, and this was the norm until the late 1950s.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE Since 2010, Kevin has made more than 500 boards. Unlike his peers, Kevin couples this work with design-build projects, mostly constructing and remodeling houses.

He also recently became a father, and he chuckles at his sleep deprivation this past month. “It’s tough,” says Kevin. “Rhode Island is not the ideal location to start a [custom surfboard] business. There’s this stigma in New England; if a board isn’t made in Southern California, it’s not as good. But part of being sustainable is to make them super durable. And I like making things.”

SO YOU WANT TO GO SURFING

How to overcome imposter syndrome and hit the waves this summer Surfing ain’t easy – and starting out is the hardest part. Longtime surfers tend to be athletic and cocksure, and it’s easy to feel intimidated. But it’s also a big-hearted community, and newbies are always welcome. Here are some easy ways to get started.

Practice Makes Perfect

Narragansett is packed with surf instructors. “Reach out to someone in your area, someone you’re comfortable approaching,” says Neil Toracinta. “Develop a good understanding of surfing etiquette and baseline ocean safety.”

Any sport takes time. And if you run out of warm-weather months, don’t worry – thermal wetsuits enable surfers to keep practicing all winter.

Rent Gear After a few lessons, you can usually rent a surfboard for $30-40 per day. This is an affordable way to test different types and decide whether you love it enough to invest.

Find Your Comfort Level “Start with a soft-topped longboard,” says David Levy. “Mostly you’re going to go out on tiny little waves.” Find the right beach, with manageable breakers and lifeguards on-hand. David recommends Narragansett, but South County has many other surfable beaches as well. “Any place with no rocks,” David adds.

There are many times in my life when I’ve said to myself: if it’s good enough for Madonna, it’s good enough for me. While this doesn’t apply to certain things — her choices in bras and husbands come to mind — it absolutely applies to skincare. If I can look as good as she does at 60, I will follow her advice to the letter. (Hell, I would settle for looking as good today as she does at 60.) The secret to her flawless skin? Electricity.

If your mind immediately goes to Frankenstein’s monster, well, you’re not entirely off. But it turns out that microcurrents of electricity are just as effective as lasers in keeping your skin youthful and elastic. Madonna’s weapon of choice is the Neurotris Microcurrent Facial,

I was a little bit nervous about having electricity applied to my face. But having tried many other beauty treatments that scared me a little bit — laser treatments, anyone? — and seeing the results that they delivered, I got over my fear and got on the table. “I’m trying to have as many modalities that work, that are holistic,” Rose said, explaining that microcurrent is totally safe, and works to reverse damage from the free radicals in your

“You’re getting current on your face but it helps your whole body,” she said. “People always feel better afterwards.”

I definitely did feel an energizing sensation as Rose used different levels of current on different parts of my face. The idea is that by stimulating the muscles, you encourage them to tighten up, making a lifted, brighter, younger appearance.

The current also boosts collagen production, making your face look plumper and smoothing out fine lines.

The whole experience of the Neutrosis Microcurrent Facial involved a twocleanse skin prep, followed by a lactic peel to lower the skin’s pH and hydrate, three kinds of current and LED light therapy to promote healing. Rose used Alika products, which are all-organic and have been made in Hungary using the same process for 60 years. “It’s really food for your face,” she said. “You can see the fruit in it.”

After the treatment was over, I immediately saw a difference in the tiny little lines around my eyes and mouth that I’m still not willing to admit are part of my new normal. The idea, Rose explained, is that one treatment will even them out temporarily, but a series of treatments will retrain the muscles into smoother, more lifted positions. “It’s preventative,” she said. “Younger people are using it, too. It’s a nice way to prevent yourself from needing Botox,” or from more serious anti-aging procedures down the line.

The less you let your muscles settle into their age, the better they will behave for you in the long-term. Maybe those little wrinkles aren’t my new normal after all.

Bob Lieberman and Peri Ann Aptaker love the ocean. Both list boating and spending time at home as favorite things to do, and Bob even has a Master Captain’s license.

So when he posed the question to his wife, “What if we could find one nice home on the water? Would you move?” a week later, the couple visited a single-level Contemporary in Jamestown and as Peri says, “fell in love,” and off they went.

Prior to relocating to South County, the couple had a primary residence on Providence’s East Side (a mid-century home designed by Ira Rakatansky) and a newly built beach house on the water in Tiverton. So taken with their

tops, gray and white mosaic stone and glass, and mocha porcelain floors, keeps the single-windowed bathroom light and bright.

Jamestown abode and locale, the pair considers this current property their “forever home.”

While still smitten with the location and grounds now eight years later, they sought professional design help to further enhance the endless staycation feel, for both now and later.

While the home boasts all kinds of amenities, Bob and Peri’s favorite feature is the view of Narragansett Bay and the interior color palette was selected to complement the natural world on the other side of the glass. “The house has lots of windows and we want to focus on the outside,” says Peri, who notes that the couple enjoys nightly cocktail hours at sunset. “The ability to see the water always brings a smile to our faces.”

Kelly Taylor Interior Design (KTID) was hired to take the shell that architect Glen Fontecchio had created for a master suite and bring it to life. With a blank slate, KTID had free reign to create a modern bed and bath, hotel-level retreat. Says Kelly, whose custom work for Bob and Peri included designing a platform bed, “With no kids and one dog, this couple was clear that they spend all of their time at home together, so they needed the space to work well for when is one sleeping while the other one was doing something else.”

Kelly also notes that the homeowners like keeping things tidy and organized, so elements were designed for near-zero clutter.

Elizabeth McKay Jenkins Founder of the Elizabeth McKay, Luxury Label My personal style is classic, all the way.

I am a creature of habit and have a ‘uniform,’ which consists of an Elizabeth shirt and pants from my collection, Elizabeth McKay. In the colder months, I layer a crew neck sweater over those pieces so that the ruffle on the shirt peeks out. It’s a way to feel pretty, but not feel overly dressed up.

I believe in investing in quality clothing.

Timeless, classic pieces will always have a place in the wardrobe. I’ve recently been reading Marie Kondo and trying to filter down my closet. This, coupled with an awareness of the impact fashion has on the environment, has helped me to focus on pieces that bring me joy and will be in my wardrobe for a long time.

Besides being in workout clothes during the school year and bathing suits during the summer, I dress about the same for day or night. The big difference is the accessories and footwear. I usually pop on a heel or heavier earring for evening. I actually carry an extra pair of neutral chunky earrings in my purse just in case my day turns into night. Generally, I’ll err on the side of dressy with comfort mixed in.

I get inspiration from so many places.

My phone is filled with snapshots and pictures of things that inspire me – from vintage photographs to wallpaper and architecture...the attention to detail in clothing from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s is so inspiring.

We loved having our store in Watch Hill because it’s such a quintessential, adorable beach community that’s near and dear to me. There are so many great shops in town now. Highpoint Home, WH2O, and Bay Breeze Interiors are always fun stops. If I’m gift shopping, I’ll swing by our friend’s store LOLO, or another good friend’s shop, Three Islands. It’s easy to spend an afternoon checking out all of the great little spots.

Grey Sail Brewing releases American Blonde Ale in celebration of Westerly’s anniversary The town of Westerly has a storied history. From New England colonialism, the American Revolution, and the Spanish Influenza to the present day, the little town on the edge of the Connecticut border has existed through some trying and glorious times. This year, the town is celebrating this history at its 350th anniversary, and citizens and local businesses alike are pulling out all the stops to partake in the jubilee. A couple of months ago, Grey Sail Brewing announced its partnership with the town to debut Flying Horse Blonde Ale in honor of its anniversary.

In the past, Grey Sail has made other brews to help benefit Westerly and contribute to the Chamber of Commerce. So, when owner Jennifer

Brinton heard about the celebration, creating a beer for the occasion was a no-brainer.

“Alan [my husband] and I not only own a brewery here, but we also live here and our four children are growing up here and attend schools here. We are a tight community...this is our town,” says Jennifer.

Inspiration for the Blonde Ale’s name came from the Watch Hill Flying Horse Carousel. The carousel was believed to be made in the late1800s by Andrew Christian and Charles Dare Company of New York City, a traveling carnival. After the outfit traipsed through Southern New England, it was abandoned at that very spot in Rhode Island. Now, the whimsical

structure stands as a landmark in the community and one of the oldest operating carousels in the United States.

The new commemorative brew is an American blonde ale brewed with 100 percent Cascade hops, yielding a strong citrus fruit flavor and aroma. This beer is also on the lighter Pilsner side, making it a perfect refreshing thirst quencher for the hotter summer months. All of the proceeds from the sale of the Flying Horse Blonde Ale will go to the Westerly 350 Committee. Flying Horse Blonde Ale can be found at every package store in the area as well as most restaurants in the town of Westerly.

Still Crazy After All These Years

Long before Guy Fieri put Crazy Burger on the country’s radar, it was already one of my favorites. In 1995, my grandmother had read about Crazy Burger in the newspaper and dutifully brought my grandfather, brother, and me to Narragansett to give it a try. After one visit, my family was hooked. Grandma O. was always in the know. Over the years, Crazy Burger has remained one of my favorites, and here’s why.

Located on Boon Street in Narragansett, Crazy Burger is just a short walk from the sea wall and Narragansett Beach. It is embedded within a neighborhood, but there is plenty of on street parking available. For those averse to parking on the street, there is a small lot close by on Congdon Street. The interior of the restaurant is small and cozy, and you can expect a wait for a table at peak times. In warmer months, a “12+” patio is available in the rear of the restaurant. The walls are hung with local art, and the ceiling is strung with white twinkling lights, which gives the space a casual beach town vibe.

Crazy Burger’s legendary breakfast is served until 4pm. They have the usual bacon, eggs, toast, etc., but it’s their specialty breakfast

items that put it on the map. The Cinnamon Roll French Toast is to die for. In fact, my family members (who are not light eaters) get an order to split. The benedicts are decadent and flavorful, and you can’t go wrong with their crepes or quesadillas either. Whatever you order, you will be stuffed!

Crazy Burger is BYOBBAM (“Bring Your Own Booze By All Means”). On my last visit, we packed a cooler full of Tilted Barn brews to enjoy with our meals. There is a myriad of non-alcoholic beverages on the menu – smoothies, juices, milkshakes, specialty coffee drinks, and more.

My brother had an iced “Chai Charger” and said it was delicious. It even came with a homemade chocolate cookie. With our drinks, we sampled the Lucky Latkes and the Sweet-Risotto Corn Fritters from the appetizer menu. Both were tasty and large enough portions to share.

The last time I ate at Crazy Burger, I fully intended to order a dinner entrée. Then I got there and couldn’t resist my favorite, the Fire “Works” Burger. The beef patty, a combination of ground short rib and chuck, is coated in the house blend fennel rub and seared to perfection on the flat

top. The burger is topped with melted gouda, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, bacon, chili-garlic mayo, and served on a bolo. This is a messy but incredibly flavorful burger. It used to be just a special, its popularity put it on the menu full time. My friend had the Goofy Gorgonzola Burger, which is also served on a bolo. The beef patty was topped with fresh gorgonzola cheese and caramelized onions, and there was an onion-gorgonzola dressing on the side. My brother had the Luna-Sea Burger. His patty was made from fresh ground salmon and mixed with pistachio pesto, which was baked in phyllo dough and served with orange-chipotle mayo. Burgers are all served with bean salad or slaw, but fries or sweet potato fries can be added for $1 more.

After our burgers, we were stuffed, but the Fried Mexican Ice Cream sounded so good, we couldn’t resist. Vanilla ice cream was rolled in crushed Frosted Flakes, fried, and then drizzled with caramel, chocolate sauce, and topped off with whipped cream. It was just as good as it sounds, maybe even better.

consistently good. I need to come back sometime to try one of the dinner entrées because the braised short ribs, Champagne Chicken, and Salmon Pistachio piqued my interest. I can’t think of anything about Crazy Burger that’s not to like, except maybe waiting for a table. As Guy Fieri would say, “This place is off the hook.”

Owner Gary Bimonte talks about continuing the legacy of Frank Pepe Pizzeria in Warwick Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is a legend in the Northeast. People drive hours from all directions just to just to find comfort and warmth in the consistent goodness of the shops’ famous pizzas. Pepe’s New England popularity is what prompted the New Haven institution to share the love with its surrounding states and expand to places like Warwick, Rhode Island. As the Frank Pepe brand grows, co-owner Gary Bimonte has taken the time to ensure that his customers are still getting a quality experience.

The story of Frank Pepe’s is one of the classic American dream. Gary’s grandfather Frank Pepe was an Italian immigrant from a little town just outside of Naples who came to the United States in the early 20th century. Outfitted with a hard work ethic and determination to succeed, Frank settled in New Haven in 1920 working in bakeries and making pizza. As time went on, Frank and his wife Filomena began making pies at his own bakery on Wooster Street, eventually expanding into a full pizzeria in 1937. This is the original New Haven joint that customers frequent today. “The rest,” Gary says, “is history.”

Consistency and tradition is what has kept this family franchise alive and growing. According to Gary, each of Frank Pepe’s locations uses the same recipes and original toppings that his grandfather used back in the ‘20s. “They made one [pizza] with tomatoes, topped with grated cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil, and another with anchovies. We still make the original tomato pie today, and we still serve anchovies as toppings!” says Gary. The restaurants – now in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island – each have a similar aesthetic as well. Every Frank Pepe’s is designed to give visitors a taste of the original spot, connecting them to the past. In the Warwick location, the antique-style tin ceiling is painted a “historic green” hue, wooden booths, and old-fashioned wallpaper pay homage to the New Haven locale.

However, the secret to success lies beyond the restaurants’ physical attributes. Gary says that what keeps people coming back is his

family’s adherence to carry out Frank Pepe’s legacy and maintain the hard work, loyalty, and community feeling that has pervaded every store since 1925. Customers recognize this effort and continue their patronage.

“My grandfather founded Pepe’s on the principles of hard work and loyalty, and he himself was even known as ‘Old Reliable’ for being so involved in community and family life...We’ve worked hard to carry out the legacy of my grandfather’s pizzeria, and I think that has made it stay so special.”

The Frank Pepe legacy continues at the family’s shop on Universal Boulevard in Warwick.

This particular location has made a splash in the Ocean State with its Neapolitan fare inciting locals and out-of-state visitors to line up the night before its opening. Every customer that comes into the Warwick shop makes a memory eating the family’s pizza. “Whether it’s a New Haven transplant in Rhode Island or a newcomer, we’re always happy to listen to their ‘Pepe’s story’,” shares Gary. There’s no doubt that as food memories are made at Frank Pepe’s, the founder’s legacy will live on.

Narragansett Beer honors Rhode Island communities with “Buy RI” tour It’s no secret that the state of Rhode Island is a small, tight-knit community. Each town and city is its own tribe, reveling in its small-towness, its local businesses, and of course, its native brews.

In an effort to recognize these quintessential Ocean State qualities, Narragansett Beer has set out to buy a beer for all the “neighbors” that frequent beloved bars and restaurants in the state. The party series “Buy RI” will underscore

our home state of Rhode Island is a center of community where people can learn from, support, and share with each other, whether it’s a close loved on or your neighbor on the barstool next to you.”

The tour kicked off a couple of months ago going alphabetically by town, but the next three months of summer will be a party in South County. The beer company will be making

the idea that sharing a drink at the bar is a celebration that brings people together. It puts into practice the company’s slogan “Hi, Neighbor, Have a ‘Gansett” in the most literal sense.

The “Buy RI” initiative was started to celebrate the local restaurant industry and small businesses in the state that have been purveyors of the amber ale for years. The focus, says President of Narragansett Beer Mark Hellendrung, is on community and loyalty.

“Every neighborhood bar or restaurant in

At the event, patrons will receive a free beverage on Narragansett by turning in a wooden nickel at the bar they receive upon entrance to the party. Mary Me There are a million different ingredients you can stick in a Bloody Mary, but few of these morning cocktails have contained chunks of locally caught lobster. For that, you’d have to head to T’s Restaurant this summer, where you’ll find a medley of seafood, bacon, olive, and citrus crowning a salted goblet. Even the choice of liquor is South County-based: Loyal 9 Vodka is distilled by Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co., headquartered in South Kingstown.

The Lobster Bloody Mary is the flagship of T’s summer menu, and be warned – it’s bigger than you think it is. This extravagant drink was a hit last year, especially on social media, where photos of the scarlet-tinted concoction went viral on Facebook and Instagram. As a fruitier alternative, there’s always the Daily Moment Mimosa, which blends both orange and mango juice.

T’s is well known for its fresh and local ingredients, and lobster features prominently in its

warm-weather dishes, including the much-beloved Lobster Benedict. You can also expect the return of sweet corn and homemade hash.

As always, T’s breakfasts go especially well with Rhode Island-brewed Downeast Coffee.

You’ll find the same scrumptious meals at both the East Greenwich and Narragansett locations – and if you decide to trek up north, the Cranston branch as well – and breakfast and brunch are served every day of the week.

But if you really want to take advantage of the sunny weather, our recommendation is Narragansett: The patio is ample, whether you sit beneath an umbrella or claim one of its colorful Adirondack chairs. You might also consider walking out with coffee mug; the “round belly” design has a certain folksy elegance, and it looks good any time of year.
