THE DIVING FISHERMAN Mike Laptew has been documenting Rhode Island sea and land life for nearly 50 years
A school of striped bass swim past the Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly
No one knows the Ocean State quite like Mike Laptew. Like many native Rhode Islanders, he grew up snorkeling, diving, and fishing here, spending summers at his uncle’s home in Jamestown. But his relationship with saltwater life goes far below the surface: Laptew is one of the Northeast region’s renowned underwater videographers. Laptew’s voyage into photography started in 1958, when he received his first camera, a Kodak Brownie. He started filming underwater in the ‘70s, and by 1990, was freediving (breath-hold diving sans SCUBA gear) to record Rhode Island seascapes and marine life. His clips quickly found a following, especially among fishermen, and in ’95 he launched his eponymous video production company. Laptew’s imagery has appeared in national and regional publications, and he’s worked closely with National Geographic, The Nature Conservancy, and Save The Bay. Thousands of anglers have been awed by his fishing seminars at sporting shows and expos along the East Coast. It’s no surprise; any viewer would be amazed by Laptew’s stunning captures, from a school of striped bass swimming past the Watch Hill Lighthouse to the close-up and colorful snap of a bay scallop and its many eyes. Plus, Laptew’s passions don’t stop at the shore: He is also an avid wildlife photographer, documenting the birds and animals found in even the state’s most densely populated cities and towns. Today, the 70-year-old videographer and North Kingstown resident still totes his camera around Rhody to shoot both land and sea. While he has traveled to photograph scenery in Siberia, Japan, Costa Rica, and beyond, Narragansett Bay still holds a special place in Laptew’s heart: “I experience the same excitement and sense of adventure that I first felt when I started snorkeling 60 years ago.” Find more of Laptew’s work at FocusOnFish. com, on Facebook at Mike.Laptew, and purchase fine art prints at MikeLaptewFineArtImages.com. | By Megan Schmit

By Kevin “Big Lux” Lowther, member of Westerly Anti-Racist Coalition
Stronger Together Westerly citizens founded an anti-racist coalition and plan Juneteenth celebration
Peaceful protestors gather on Sundays at the steps of the Westerly Post Office
“We shall overcome because the arc of moral history is long but it bends toward justice.” Martin Luther King, Jr. uttered these words at the National Cathedral on March 31, 1968. Barack Obama further popularized the quote during his campaign and presidency, even having it sewn into a rug in the Oval Office. The most common interpretation of the quote is that though progress may seem slow, justice will prevail in moral matters. But is it always destiny that justice will be done? Eight Westerly citizens, inspired by these words and fueled by passion, decided that justice and accountability is only inevitable

when people join together and put in the work. Together, they founded the Westerly Anti-Racist Coalition, or Westerly ARC, that serves as the organizing arm of the peaceful protests downtown. Initially, these protests were a vehicle to raise awareness, create community, and take the temperature of local support for racial equity; as they sparked conversation and connection, it became clear there was more work to be done. While the members of Westerly ARC all live in or grew up in Westerly, they represent different generations, gender identities, and racial experiences. The
conversations have been challenging as the group works to educate themselves, determine their goals and how to measure success, and ultimately model what it looks like to be a diverse group of people working together for change – all of which culminates in their mission statement: “Embracing multiculturalism to address racism through education and empowerment.” Aside from continuing a lending library and meaningful programming at the weekly town protests, Westerly ARC also plans to produce a multicultural events calendar to showcase the vibrant and varied local

programming available, host online discussions to help people process real-time events, and educate and provide perspective to trending news and current legislation. This month, they are planning a Juneteenth celebration that will simultaneously mark a year of peaceful protests, which began in response to the death of George Floyd in May of 2020. In prepping for this event to mark the impetus of Westerly’s protests, police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of Floyd’s murder. “As we reflect on the realities of the last seven days in communities that may seem far
away, we are reminded of the urgent need to support the physical, emotional, and psychological safety of Persons of Color right here in Westerly,” reads a statement Westerly ARC published soon after the verdict. “Just as a collective and emotional sigh of relief was let out surrounding the announcement of guilty verdicts for Derek Chauvin, there was also mourning for Daunte Wright, and heartbreak at the loss of Ma’Khia Bryant.” “While we may not know exactly how to process all that has happened in just seven short days, it is clear that now is not the time to look away or think our
community is somehow protected from the impact of racism and bias,” it continues. “Now is the time to steer directly in the direction of doing all we can to be educated about the impacts of systemic racism and bias, celebrate multiculturalism, and move with a spirit of love for an even more beautiful and safe community.” Join friends and neighbors every Sunday from 10am to noon on the steps of the Westerly Post Office. Learn more about Westerly ARC on Instagram (@westerlyarc) or email westerlyarc@gmail.com for more information on the upcoming Juneteenth celebration.

Rhody Pets: 10+ South County destinations for the equine obsessed Who didn’t at some point beg their parents for a pony growing up? While the idea of having a horse as a pet might’ve struck our fancy as kids, it’s safe to say they’re far more majestic than domestic and for many of us, a day at the stables is much more doable than taking on ownership. Your average horse is 16 hands tall (that’s roughly five foot, three inches), weighs between 900 and 2,000 pounds (depending on the breed), and gallops at speeds around 30 miles per hour (whoa, Nelly!). Horses are also incredibly gentle creatures, often used in animal therapy for those with anxiety, ADD, autism, and developmental disabilities. Wickford’s Retail Renaissance New business owners reflect on why the village is the perfect place to call home “When we came to Wickford to see what pre-Christmas business was like, it was raining and cold, yet people were still bustling around the village, popping in and out of stores,” Katie Hutchinson recalls. “It was unexpectedly busy. So, Wickford Village did something right and held their own during this chaotic period.” Katie and her husband Jim opened flatfish cottage on 12 Main Street in March after operating out of Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. The new location, Katie says, brings the couple back to their roots, reminding them of the coastal towns in which they grew up; the store’s contents reflect this, too, with shelves of stationary, self-care products, home goods, and more. “Wickford is a happy place,” Katie explains, “and felt like the perfect place to put a shop that encourages people to ‘find their happy’.” The Hutchinsons aren’t the only entrepreneurs who saw the historic village’s potential, even amidst a pandemic. Wickford has undergone a retail rebirth in the last year, saying farewell to long-standing favorites and making space for new ones. Janelle Feigley closed the doors to Gossip Boutique to pursue her passions in acting and screenwriting, while the owners of Village Reflections, Lulabells, and Canvasworks+ decided to retire. Others have quickly sprung up in their stead: women’s fashion destination Therapy Boutique, artist co-op Harbor View Artisans, apparel and art store Vanessa Piche, and clothing and accessories retailer Binnsy Boutique. “I am so fortunate to have opened this business when I did,” says Caitlin Gendreau, owner of Binnsy Boutique, which, like flatfish cottage, opened in March. Gendreau grew up shopping in Wickford Village and has worked in retail since she was 15, so starting her own store had always been a “backburner day dream” until recently, when the Village Faire’s former space at 7 Main Street was up for grabs. While she admits it was strange opening with so many restrictions, she also notes that foot traffic is picking back up and the chance at a real grand opening is on the table this summer. For Candace Brown and Lauren Wells, co-owners of Therapy Boutique, the moment also felt opportune: “When our new space became available, which doesn’t happen very

often in Wickford, we decided we had to make the move.” Therapy, which can also be found in Wakefield, quickly traded their spot in East Greenwich for the village; Brown credits the seaside setting and strollable main strip with shaping the perfect shopping experience for visitors. “The pandemic encouraged people to shop locally and served to remind people of the uniqueness of shopping small,” muses Katie, adding that this, coupled with the room for slow growth, made opening during the pandemic the
perfect time. And while they’ve only been up and running a few months, the Hutchinsons share Gendreau’s observation that business is picking up as tourists return – lured by warmer weather and, perhaps, news of a revitalized village. While you may notice these new storefronts as you meander Main Street, the essence of Wickford remains true. You’ll still find notable mainstays like Green Ink, Different Drummer, Wickford Gourmet, Beauty & The Bath, Wickford Village Antiques, Eclectic Bungalow, and

Seas the Day From manufacturers to marinas, the boating industry is booming in southern Rhode Island BY MEGAN MONTE
Back in mid-April, while a few warm days had provided hopeful teasers of the approaching summer, the coastal water temperature was still a frigid 46 degrees. For anyone out on the water, cool sea breezes offered a blunt reminder that it wasn’t quite time for bathing suits and flip flops. Jumping in the ocean for a swim, sun tanning on the bow, and tubing weren’t on the list of viable options for the typical day boater. Yet, despite the cold, West Kingston resident Roberta Ricci already had her 22-foot Boston Whaler motor boat in the water for a few weeks. Her willingness to wear a jacket and winter hat on her summertime vessel came down to one simple reason: “I love the ocean.”

Photos by Blake Phillips, courtesy of Marine Max
MarineMax might be a national boat dealer, but they have strong ties to RI
More specifically, Ricci loves the possibilities that ocean cruising in South County brings. From fishing, to visiting Block Island or Jamestown, to teaching her grandchildren how to pilot the boat, she is hooked on the saltwater activities and rich family memories her craft brings. “Every time I go out on that boat, I think ‘we’re so lucky,’” she says, and she’s not alone. Rhode Island is home to multitudes of local and transient boaters, and the rich nautical culture, endless opportunities, and
picturesque views could make anyone feel fortunate. Fishing poles can reel in anything from fluke to black sea bass, the clay cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs make a grand and picturesque display to the passing sailor, and coastal coves offer a calm place to anchor for a picnic and swim. These assets are what make the Ocean State’s boating industry so massive and economically impactful, even in the midst of a pandemic.
Ricci’s boat is docked at Safe Harbor Silver Spring Marina in Wakefield, which is also home to MarineMax – a dealer and resource that helps new boats get out on our waters. MarineMax exists nationwide, with locations in places as far as Florida and Texas, but it is Rhode Island’s incredibly all-season boating that keeps a thriving facility here.
According to Blake Phillips, general manager of MarineMax Rhode Island and Massachusetts, our boating industry is flourishing because Rhode Island simply offers everything. “The truth is Rhode Island boating is some of the best in New England. It’s one of the best from a ‘things to do’ standpoint – from day destinations like Block Island, to excellent fishing, and some amazing waterfront restaurants, there’s no shortage of things for the boater and family – let alone how truly historical every waterfront town is,” he reflects, his enthusiasm for the region evident. Phillips also names shopping, activities for children, and nighttime entertainment as
additional advantages, showcasing just how well southern Rhode Island caters to every type of boater. “I’d put Rhode Island as the ultimate destination on a boater’s agenda for anyone on the East Coast.” It’s no secret, then, why boat dealerships like Wakefield’s MarineMax are booming. While the area’s suitability for boating stimulates marine sales on its own, the pandemic added fuel to the already-burning flame, causing business to skyrocket. When work places were closed, plans were disrupted, and health was put at risk, many began prioritizing a “live in the moment” attitude and embracing the experiences they always dreamed about.
Photo by Kettlebottom Creative, courtesy of Conanicut Marina
For many in South County, that dream experience is having a boat, and the demand for sea vessels has surged as a result. “Our business is off the charts – and we’re in a hiring frenzy to deliver the boating dream to more buyers than ever,” Phillips says, adding, “We’ve had a record month every single month for the last year.” Purchases are booked out for months and inventory is nearly impossible to hold onto. Day boats, like small center consoles, are the most popular purchases because they offer the perks of boating without the hassle and cost of owning a larger vessel. Phillips doesn’t see this inferno of purchasing going away any time soon.

Conanicut Marina is a popular docking spot for boaters visiting Jamestown in summer
Bill Munger is the founder and owner of Conanicut Marine Services Inc., and owner of Conanicut Marina in Jamestown, which houses visiting boaters who flock to the area in the warmer months. He and his wife began their family-owned business from scratch over 40 years ago, and their growth and success is apparent by their beautiful marina, as well as their ferry, charter, and other services. While local boaters fill moorings and docks, Munger names the transient boaters who come to experience Rhode Island’s summer waters as the “the life” of the area. “It’s the visiting boaters that provide the energy to everything in the state – restaurants,
barbershops, you name it.” The importance of visiting boaters was plainly displayed when sailboat races were cancelled and travel restrictions were put in place last summer. This made it very difficult for out-of-state boaters to stay in Rhode Island, and as Munger explains, “It meant we had empty slips, empty moorings, empty everything.” Fortunately, that situation is looking very different for this year. With travel restrictions eased and people appreciating and buying boats, Munger is seeing his marina’s bookings and slips filling up again for the summer. “We’re seeing a lot of energy in the boating community,” he says.

This energy from both transient and local boaters not only impacts our restaurants and other businesses, as Munger mentions, but it also affects the various jobs and careers behind marine services. In addition to office staff and dockhands, “there are boat riggers, marine technicians, sailmakers, canvas makers, electronics engineers,” Munger says, to name a few of the careers created by boating culture. “The marine industry is very vibrant right now, and there are many, many job openings in the marine industry, particularly in the boatyard aspect of things.” In fact, he says, “Every single marine trade right now has capacity to add skilled labor,” and even inexperienced candidates are being hired and trained on the job. Another need created by boats in our water relates to environmental health: While it may not be glamorous, pumpout boats and floating restrooms are a necessity when our waters are full of locals and transients. Marine Boatbuilders is a pumpout boat and floating restroom manufacturer based in Warwick, and their products are responsible for keeping our harbors and waterways safe from boat discharge. Rick Audette Jr., vice president, explains how the company began as a way to remedy the pollution issue that kept Block Island’s Great Salt Pond closed for shellfishing in the ‘90s. Audette’s father was an avid Block Island boater, and when he saw how bacteria from boat discharge was harming the pond, he started his company to help clean it up. The state of Rhode Island soon made Block Island a no-discharge zone for boaters, prohibiting vessels from dumping waste in the water, and other zones followed. Today, boaters can’t discharge waste within three miles of the Rhode Island coast, which means these boats need some environmentally safe and sanitary way to get rid of waste. “I think there’s been an increase over the last few years. There’s definitely more people recognizing that pumping out is the right thing to do. People want to follow the rules and want clean waters,” Audette states. The more pumpout boats available, the more likely it is that boaters will use them, so both the private and public sectors are ordering vessels. In order to keep Rhode Island waters as appealing for boaters as it is, our waters need to be healthy. It’s a system that keeps the manufacturers behind that service alive and well. Charter fishing enables any landlubber to get out on our waters and enjoy the fishing experience. An added advantage? It makes fishing easy, and oftentimes brings more success than new fishermen could have on their own.

“Where you fish depends on what you’re fishing for. You decide where you’re going to go based on experience,” says Seven B’s Captain Russ Benn, and he offers a wealth of fishing experience to those booking his charters. In addition to having fishing success, Seven B’s prioritizes safety, follows all rules and regulations, and takes the hassle of caring for and cleaning a boat out of the equation. With southern Rhode Island’s fishing reputation and the popularity of getting out on the water, it’s no wonder
Capt. Russ Benn has stayed in the business for over 50 years. Now, it’s summer: The waters have warmed up and boating season is in full swing. Time for sails to march across the horizon line, transients to flock to the area, fish to be caught, and new and old boats to be launched in our waters. It’s not just a seasonal pastime for southern Rhode Island; it’s an integral part of the region’s identity, with a far-reaching impact that brings life and opportunity to so many.

Salt Life Boho-surf decor in a serene palette keeps the focus on the nearby shore in this Point Judith home “The first date Jeff ever asked me on was to go surfing with him at 5am and watch the sunrise,” says Brandelyn Romanek of her courtship. Jeff spent his childhood going on day trips from New York with his dad and grandfather to surf Narragansett at the Point Judith Lighthouse. As an adult he continued the tradition, heading to Rhode Island even on weekday mornings from the couple’s Connecticut home whenever there was a report of a swell. Says Brandelyn, “He’d get up at 3am to be at the Point Judith lighthouse by 5am, surf, and then immediately change in the parking lot and drive straight to work.” Photography by Cate Brown, courtesy of Brandelyn Romanek SORhodeIsland.com • June 2021

The Romaneks had been tethered to NYC for their jobs, but when COVID hit it became clear very quickly that working remotely changed things. Brandelyn relays that with their very young children not yet in the school system, the pair figured it was an ideal time to finally move to Rhode Island. “The same way golfers dream of living on a golf course, this was Jeff’s dream to live on a wave!” In April 2020 they bought a house in Narragansett and took their “quaranteam” to the Ocean State. That first summer was spent settling in, decorating, exploring their new town, and “of course, surfing!” The house is a single-level modern cape

Brandelyn has outfitted the home in a surf-meets-boho chic style. “White everything with driftwood accents seemed like the perfect way to honor the house’s proximity to the sea,” she begins. “The simplicity of this style allows you to focus on what’s most important: the bright blue ocean right outside your window,” says Brandelyn, who notes that there are water views from every window. “Everything about our decor has tried to honor our ideas around ‘living locally’,” says Brandelyn, pointing out wall art which includes a surfboard on the master bedroom wall from Warm

Being so close to the Point Judith Lighthouse is special for Jeff since he has shared so many memories with his grandfather there.” A little more than a year after relocating, the Romaneks continue to be enamored with their life by the sea. “We love how low-key and family-oriented Narragansett is,” says Brandleyn, who originally hails from South Carolina. “It makes me smile to think about how all those years ago Jeff asked me to go surfing with him before we were even dating, and now here we are happily married with two children living in a surf town on a surf break.”

I love to sit in the sun with my cup of coffee from Caf Bar in the morning and hear the waves and smell the salty air. Nothing beats watching the sunrise over the ocean.” SURF’S UP “Days when there are big waves are the BEST because there is energy in the air, and you can see a line of cars with surfboards poking out the back all driving towards the Point Judith Lighthouse. When you get to the lighthouse, the parking lot is full and the water is filled with a long-standing community of surfing friends who are all cheering for each other, and many times their families and friends are sitting in beach chairs up on the shore watching, clapping, and smiling.” RHODE GOODS “The children’s games and decor in their rooms are all from the Umbrella Factory. Our surf photography was all framed with raw wood by Finishing Touches in Wakefield. Our blinds are seagrass and rattan from Blinds and Designs. We’re always burning candles from Newport’s Shore Soap Company, and our favorite is the Atlantic scent.”

Botanical Bounty Touring local gardens is an idyllic way to spend the day All over South County summer is in full bloom, and there are few things more relaxing than wandering a garden path while admiring the sights and scents of the natural world. Tours are available all over the state, but there may be some in your own backyard you have yet to explore. Whether following a guide or browsing at your own pace, visiting a garden can be a natural fit for the whole family. KINNEY AZALEA GARDEN For nearly 70 years, visitors have been marveling at more than 500 varieties of azaleas and other flowers, shrubs, and trees at the backyard property of Tony and Elizabeth
Kinney Faella. Photogs will love the picturesque Moon Gate, along with the Wildflower Walk, Troll Bridge, and other sights. Peak visiting time is June, but gardens are in bloom through the summer. There is no entrance fee, but donations keep it all going; find the donation box at the entrance. A $25 donation fee is suggested for professional photographers. No pets. Open during daylight hours. 2391 Kingstown Road, Kingston, KinneyAzaleaGardens.com LAVENDER WAVES Picture yourself on the stately gazebo surrounded by 4,000 plants and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped onto the luscious lavender
fields of the French countryside. Sitting on 14 acres, the lines of lavender – spanning 10 different varieties – share the ground with animals from sheep and alpacas to a donkey and peacock. Lavender lovers can purchase tickets online for farm events or shop the artisanal lavender-infused soaps, lotions, and scrubs available at the farm stand. Guests may also book a stay in the luxurious farm suite overlooking the lavender field and enjoy a rustic and chic retreat. 3814 Commodore Perry Highway, Wakefield, LavenderWavesFarm.com URI BOTANICAL GARDENS Peruse the grounds that have been pleasing passersby since 1992 with its carefully

SUMMER SHUCKING Walrus and Carpenter Oyster Bar reopens for the season with boat-to-table shellfish Picnic tables are arranged around a white shack, offering views of Fort Getty and the Jamestown Bridge; there’s a distinctly salty breeze in the air and a tray of oysters to be shucked. This is the quintessential coastal Rhode Island experience you can expect from Walrus and Carpenter Oyster Bar, and you can’t get any closer to the source of these shellfish without putting on waders yourself. “We launch our work boats from this marina, and our Dutch Harbor farm – where we grow our ‘Dutchie’ oysters – is just a few hundred yards offshore from the oyster bar,” explains farmer and sales manager Kevin Cummings. “So essentially, visitors can enjoy our oysters right where they are grown.” Photo by Angel Tucker, courtesy of Walrus and Carpenter Oyster Bar SORhodeIsland.com • June 2021

A seasonal seafood venue, the WCO bar reopened their doors in time for Memorial Day to once again put oyster aficionados and newbies alike to the test of tasting Dutchies and the oysters grown from their Charlestown farm in Ninigret Pond, dubbed “Originals”, side by side. “It’s really fun to see people comparing the differences between the flavor profiles between the two varieties,” says Cummings. “We get a lot of really good questions from guests, and we love talking with them about the environmental factors and the farming techniques that create such distinct flavor profiles based on which body of water the oysters are grown in.” The oyster bar is a new extension of their business as of last summer. “We’re keeping it

simple and leading with what we know...oysters. We are oyster farmers first and foremost, and we take pride in the shellfish we grow,” says Cummings. Using sustainable practices and collaborating with chefs, their team of farmers takes into account environmental features, like Ninigret Pond’s sandy overwash plane, that cultivate the best flavor: a marriage of salty and sweet, briny and buttery. Delivery to local restaurants happens the same day these plump bivalves are harvested. Now, served up at their Jamestown bar with house-made apple ginger mignonette sauce and hot sauce, the immediate feedback on flavor and texture is a rewarding part of the process for both farmers and eaters. “The atmosphere is casual and the menu is simple.
Guests order shucked oysters, iced tea, lemonade, chips and dip at the window, and take their oysters to our picnic tables that line the clam shelled parking lot,” says Cummings. Dutchies and Originals will always be at the center of the menu, though this summer they’ll be adding a few more raw and cold seafood options and sides to the menu, too. Folks will also be able to order ahead online to pick up oysters to shuck at home, along with shucking knives and gloves, making the experience easy – and thankfully more thoughtful than the conniving methods used by the Walrus and Carpenter characters of Alice in Wonderland fame! Inner Mews While indoor dining was out, Wakefield’s long-standing tavern got a makeover
Photography by Grace Lentini courtesy of Michelle Lee Designs
When a pub doesn’t let a tree stand in its way, you know a pandemic isn’t going to stop it either. The Mews Tavern in Wakefield started as a watering hole for fishermen back in 1947, and yes, there is a tree growing inside. In 1990, David Barnes and Danny Rubio bought the place and over the years have transformed it into a beer-lovers paradise with 69 offerings on tap, including local microbrews. A staple of favorites with seasonal offerings keeps the menu both reliable and interesting. It was just over a year ago that Barnes and

Rubio decided the upstairs could use a remodel and then lockdown happened; Team Mews quickly shifted to curbside pickup and outdoor dining and made use of the enforced indoor restrictions to continue with plans to refresh the pub. “When I met with my clients, they mentioned wanting to create a more female-friendly atmosphere but not lose the male clientele,” says Michelle Lee Parenteau, of Michelle Lee Designs, based in Johnston. “They also expressed giving it a more upscale cocktail lounge feel on one end of the restaurant and an industrial rustic ocean vibe on the other.” To achieve this, Parenteau had a huge tufted banquette installed and added a crocodile pattern wallpaper mixed with a faux brick on the top. Accent lighting was placed strategically for added ambiance. To create the industrial rustic ocean vibe, shiplap paneling was added vertically, wood tables were treated to custom stain, and the bar was stained turquoise blue. “The tavern downstairs is a bit more boisterous and we needed a place that was a bit more subdued but didn’t vary too much from the overall Mews vibe, but was just a little different from the rest of the place,” says Rubio. “We were shut down by the state just as we started this project so it actually helped speed up the process.” As patrons return to The Mews and head up the stairs, they’ll see the mission statement painted onto the risers. They’ll also find what Rubio describes as “a more relaxed atmosphere geared more towards adults and also more welcoming for women. A great place to grab a drink or glass of wine, before and/or after dinner. There is so much history packed into the Mews and that’s why people from all over check in whenever they’re in town.”

GOLF! COME PLAY… Meal prep biz in Gansett makes healthy summer eating a breeze You may have tried a classic grilled cheese, cuppa’ chowder, or other hand-held snacks from BSquared at The Farmer’s Daughter this spring, but the business was actually founded around providing a weeknight meal solution with prepared foods. “When someone says ‘BSquared Prepared’, I want you to think about delicious, beautiful moments you can share with your family and community,” says chef and owner Benny Barber, a Jamestown native who’s been cooking for folks all over the country before bringing what he’s learned back to a new Narragansett kitchen in Mariner Square. “In addition to prepared, ready-to-heatand-eat meals, we will have lots of options to fill up your cooler for lunch on the beach or a picnic in the park,” explains Barber, listing off favorites like a Black Bean Burger over greens and BBQ chicken with sweet potato hash and garlicky green beans, along with chicken and pasta salads to-go. With some staples also appearing at Grapes & Gourmet in Jamestown, healthy summer eating just got easier. Narragansett, LiveB2.com
Timeless Misquamicut beach bar turns 100 A summer day spent on a beach towel or Adirondack chair exhausted from a dip in the water and a few spins on the Herschell Spillman carousel is a coastal tradition Atlantic Beach Park in Misquamicut has now been offering for 100 years. Hot dogs, lobster rolls, and cotton candy from the Windjammer Surf Bar are a huge part of the draw at this third-generation family business currently owned by Charles A. Trefes and wife Amy. Originally a roller skating rink, the Windjammer is now known for live music on the patio, oceanfront sports bar, seafood dishes, and summer cocktails. “We have a great head chef, Lenny Malagrino, who is always coming up with different weekly specials,” Amy explains. “We have elevated the Windjammer to more than what was once a simple bar menu.” While a centennial celebration is on hold until they can do it right without restrictions, the restaurant is open with specials like Pork Chop Rockefeller and Crab-Stuffed Filet Mignon to go with the classic beachy eats you know and love.
