ALL-AMERICAN CHICKS The South County Museum welcomes this year’s newest Rhode Island Reds When most people think about celebrating the Fourth of July, they think of things like cookouts and fireworks, but the South County Museum in Narragansett celebrates by welcoming 200 newly hatched chicks into the world. The Fourth of July Rhode Island Red Chick Hatch is an annual tradition and serves as a twofer, allowing guests to celebrate the birth of our nation and the birth of new members of our official state bird’s flock. These chicks will fill the ranks of the museum’s living history farm and fill your heart with more warm and

fuzzies than you can handle. Speaking of handling something warm and fuzzy, guests will even get a chance to hold the newly hatched chicks. Last year, nearly 500 visitors flocked to the museum to greet Rhode Island’s newest – and cutest – feathered ambassadors. Keep an eye out for other events happening all throughout the summer as South County Museum celebrates its 85th anniversary, like a Blacksmithing Workshop for Kids (July 11-13) and gallery talks happening through the fall. Life Cycle Scott Pellett opened Bike On with a mission: to invite anyone to ride a bicycle

After discovering hand-cycles, Scott Pellett made it his mission to make sure anyone could ride a bike

18

SORhodeIsland.com • July 2018

He married his wife Lynn, and together they ran a fitness center throughout the ‘80s. Their son recently turned thirty. Then, at 40 years old, Pellett tried a “hand-cycle” – a bicycle powered by a hand-crank. He took the vehicle to the East Bay Bike Path for a test ride. “I just fell in love with it,” Pellett says. “I still remember, to this day, leaving my wheelchair behind, seeing it get smaller. I saw all these people, and they were so happy. There was this parallel universe, and I never knew about it.” So in 1999, Pellett went back into business, selling hand-cycles. Today, he’s the

owner of Bike On, a specialty bike shop in Warwick. The store is tucked into a narrow drive, but customers visit from across New England to try Bike On’s fleet of hand-cycles, recumbent trikes, tandem bikes, and athletic wheelchairs. He displays these diverse vehicles on the showroom of his 10,000-square-foot building. “I thought it would be a little part-time venture,” recalls Pellett. But then he was startled to receive an order from a customer in Israel, and he suddenly realized the global reach of an Internet storefront. Today, Bike On helps riders of all stripes, from older riders to wounded veterans, living anywhere in the world. Many of the models have whimsical designs: recumbent trikes

Scott Pellett will always remember May 1, 1971, as the day his life changed forever. He was an athletic and daring 15-year-old from rural Coventry, and he decided to climb a telephone pole. “I was going after those old glass insulators,” he recalls. “Somewhere along the line I touched a live wire. It was 13,000 volts in my left wrist.” Pellett narrowly survived his electrocution, but he also fell from the pole and broke his back, losing the use of his legs. Since then, Pellett has reconciled with paraplegia, living an active and prolific life. “I kind of found a new identity,” he says. He discovered wheelchair basketball in college.

for people with back problems, electric devices for power-assisted movement, and the OPair, which can connect a wheelchair to a bicycle and turn it into a kind of rickshaw. Pellett is still an active athlete, having completed many 100-mile “century” rides with his own hand-cycle. He’s also been encouraged by decades of accessibility advancements. But Bike On has also opened doors to an entire generation of alternative riders. “Many of my customers have grown old with me,” says Pellett. “I’ve sold them five or six bikes over the years. We always say we can get anybody riding a bike, if they wish to.” Warwick, Bike-On.com –Robert Isenberg

South County Scoops Find cool treats for hot days at these four local ice cream shops Summer is here and so is our craving for ice cream. We visited just a handful of local ice cream shops to report back on some major sweetness. Grab your spoon and dig in for a scoop (or two!) in South County. The Inside Scoop is conveniently located off Ten Rod Road in North Kingstown. Owned by the Bucci Family, this ice cream spot feels a lot like an ice cream parlor of yesteryear. While the ambience evokes nostalgia, the offerings are anything but antiquated. Boasting over 64 flavors of ice cream to choose from, they also offer ice cream cakes, smoothies, and more. Vegans can rejoice with two vegan ice cream selections: vanilla bean with a coconut twist and chocolate peanut butter. TheInsideScoopRI.com

Serving some of the best soft serve ice cream around, Hill-Top Creamery is located in East Greenwich on Post Road. Whether you’re in the mood for an ice cream sundae, flurry, or float, Hill-Top Creamery offers them all. Feeling adventurous? Order a Kay’s Famous Torch and find out what makes it so famous. Baseball lovers can order a classic baseball cap sundae and enjoy soft or hard ice cream in a souvenir plastic hat to take home. Facebook: Hill-top Creamery You can find Clementine’s on Main Street in East Greenwich. Their homemade ice cream is made on-site with flavors like oatmeal cookie, butter brickle, and peach. Try the Clementine’s sorbet for a refreshing summer treat, and be sure to order one of their waffle cones... a sure bet for summer. Facebook: Clementine’s Ice Cream Brickley’s has locations in Wakefield and Narragansett. For a sweet treat on your way to or from the beach, Brickley’s on Boston Neck Road is a must. This ice cream shop offers plenty of picnic benches for enjoying tasty flavors, like apple pie, bing cherry, malted milk ball, and sweet cream, and if ice cream isn’t your thing, they offer yogurt and sherbet as well. A Musical Milestone The Kingston Chamber Music Festival strikes up the band for its 30th year

22

SORhodeIsland.com • July 2018

Artistic Director Natalie Zhu has pulled out all of the stops for the 30th annual Kingston Chamber Music Festival

out its mission, the festival has relied on its many volunteers and supporters. In particular, Sam and Lyndie Ersan, Rosalyn Sinclair, Jonathan Garber, as well as their generous donors. Additionally, the Natalie B. Kampen Fund, established in 2015 through the Rhode Island Foundation as a legacy gift to the festival, has largely contributed to the commissioning of new works. The Kingston Chamber Music Festival anticipates a large turn out for each of the seven concerts and hopes to fill the 500-

plus person concert hall at URI. As for the decades-long success of the festival, Kim says “I always had faith that the festival would thrive; I’m shaking my head in wonder that we have already reached 30 seasons. I hope Natalie and the Board will continue doing what they already do so well and so tirelessly: cook up innovative ideas, passionately promote those ideas, and execute them flawlessly.” Univesity of Rhode Island, Kingston. For its 30th year in a row, the Kingston Chamber Music Festival (KCMF), under the direction and leadership of Artistic Director Natalie Zhu, will take the stage for two weeks of remarkable programming. Over the course of six concerts and a solo piano recital, more than 45 world-class musicians and prodigious young artists will share their artistry with audiences. To commemorate such a memorable milestone, Zhu has “prepared an exciting program for [the] 30th anniversary year that includes several special guests [and] four original compositions, three of which were commissioned specifically for the festival,” says Board President Betsy Marcotte. Additionally, acclaimed musicians Carl Schimmel, David Ludwig, and Eliane Aberdam will give talks prior to the concerts that feature their works and two post-concert talks will be given on each of the Friday nights during the event. Unveiled at the festival will be an exhibit entitled Celebrating the Spirit Con Brio, which was curated by KCMF Board member Susan Marcus. It will be mounted in URI’s Fine Arts Center beginning on opening night, and will remain open before each concert and during intermissions. The exhibit presents a visual journey through the festival’s 30-year history and “bears witness to the joy and enthusiasm people experience when playing and listening to music together,” says Marcotte. The festival is committed to building community. In KCMF’s Spring newsletter, Zhu expressed that “[the festival] was created to bring audiences together to share in the transportive experience of live music-making.” Her mission, found at the heart of the festival, is founder and first artistic director, David Kim’s, goal for the yearly event. This year, Kim will be performing in three of the seven concerts. In addition to bringing outstanding chamber music to the Ocean State, KCMF musicians have introduced classical music to more than 15,000 students from South County to Providence since 1991. For Your Amusement Let out your inner child at these six fun South County spots

Make a list of quintessential summertime amusement activities, and Adventureland will have all of them. Mini golf, gokarts, batting cages, ice cream stand, carousel, bumper boats – you name it, they have it. Their newest attractions, as of last summer, are three 25-foot Extreme Big Air Jumpers. All they ask is that you be sure to save some good times for the rest of South County. left of the towels, and you’ll wash right up at Atlantic Beach Park for summer entertainment. There are bumper cars, monkey barrels, an arcade, a kiddie coaster, and a carousel dating back to 1915 to enjoy. After you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a bite to eat at the snack bar and polish it off with a scoop from the ice cream stand – we won’t be upset if you don’t have room for dinner. Westerly, AtlanticBeachPark.com If you take a walk off the Misquamicut Beach along Atlantic Avenue, you’ll be at Bayview Fun Park before you have the time to shake the sand off your feet. With go-karts, batting cages, mini-golf, and bumper boats, this is an ideal spot to take a break from the sand and surf. Spend some time there, take a plunge in the ocean when you get hot, then head back over and repeat. Westerly In the dog days of summer, it can seem like

there’s no space for a blanket bigger than a postage stamp at Misquamicut Beach. Fortunately, Water Wizz of Westerly is right up the road for anyone looking to stay cool and have some serious fun doing so. With over 1,000 feet of waterslides, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy themselves, from the Little Dipper slide for young riders to the Super Speed racing slides for that friend who makes everything into a competition. Westerly, WaterWizzRI.com The Flying Horse Carousel stands tucked at the end of Watch Hill’s main drag – a fairly modest spot for the oldest suspended-horse carousel in the country. Just steps from the sand, the horses have been delighting visitors to the South County seaside since the 1870s. Grab the brass ring and you win a free ride, but we have a feeling you’ll want to take another spin anyway. Watch Hill –Miles Temel

Believe it or not, you don’t have to go to the beach to cool off in summer – just ask the folks at the Yawgoo Valley Water Park. Take a dip in the pool, or cruise down one of their two waterslides. Loud whoops of excitement and singing of Paul Simon’s “Slip Slidin’ Away” are highly encouraged. Exeter, Yawgoo.com

Here Comes the Bookmobile Bookstore-in-a-van Twenty Stories puts LA in the rearview to set up shop in Rhode Island

Emory Harkins – a Rhode Island native – and Alexa Trembly moved their hip, mobile bookstore to the Ocean State last month

neighboring state. It was coming from Los Angeles, which by Rhode Island measurements may as well be another planet. Thanks to social media, their reputation preceded them. The two writers-turned-entrepreneurs opened Twenty Stories in November. For them the decision to open a mobile bookstore was a pragmatic one. They wanted to work with books (“When you say ‘I’m a writer’ [in LA],” explains Harkins, “it’s like ‘Oh, film or TV?’”) but they knew they didn’t have the capital to open a bookstore.

“We both had jobs unrelated to writing and were super dissatisfied,” says Trembly. “So we brainstormed. Food trucks are so big in LA. Maybe we could do this.” The concept took off, with Twenty Stories popping up throughout the week, but LA is a demanding town notorious for its traffic. With growing their business and allowing themselves time to explore their own creative pursuits, Harkins and Trembly did what brick-and-mortar business owners can’t: they moved the whole operation 3,000 miles East.

Photo by Shaunae Teske, courtesy of Twenty Stories

When mobile bookstore Twenty Stories made its debut in Providence last month, owners Alexa Trembly and Emory Harkins felt right at home. “We got a car wash near Julian’s, and as we were driving down Broadway some girl came up to our window and was like ‘I saw you were coming to town and I’m so excited!’” explains Harkins who, as someone who grew up in Providence, is familiar with that kind of small-town, everybody-knows-everybody mentality. But it’s not like Twenty Stories was rolling in from a

Because your cardiologist is an expert communicator, too www.southcountyhealth.org/heart

Each month, Twenty Stories will feature, well, 20 stories – a 20-title selection of (mostly) fiction, non-fiction, and poetry culled from personal interests, positive reviews, and whatever might be coming down the line. “We try to read as many of the books that we’re selling as possible,” says Trembly, with each of them doing their best to read 10 of the month’s picks. The van will spend most of the week roaming providence, with weekends reserved for events, markets, and hopefully trips to places like Jamestown and Newport. Unlike in LA, where they utilize ”guerilla parking” tactics to show up unannounced in front of coffee shops and along the beach, they’re hoping to develop partnerships with local businesses to plan out appearances. “We’d like them to know who we are and not just show up,” says Harkins. They’re also offering a subscription service where members will be mailed one of each month’s featured titles, and will host a monthly book club. After last month’s warm reception, the two are excited to weave their way into the fabric of the ocean state. “I’m excited by how community focused everyone is here,” says Trembly. “They really want to support things like this, and you could feel that.” TwentyStoriesLA.com; Follow Twenty Stories on Instagram @TwentyStoriesLA for exact locations Wednesday-Sunday –Tony Pacitti

Vikki Warner was only 26 when she bought a Victorian house in Providence’s Federal Hill and started letting apartments. She gave the property a lofty name (PennHenge) and zealously maintained the old building herself. Soon, she was den mother to a house full of oddballs. But for Warner, renting to marginalized tenants was a labor of love. She documents these trials in her memoir, Tenemental: Adventures of a Reluctant Landlady, released this month from Feminist Press. Warner is a veteran journalist and now works as an acquisitions editor for Blackstone Publishing. She was inspired to write the book during an especially laborious cleaning episode; a former tenant had left behind a museum of strange artifacts, including animal bones, moldy journals, and a bucket marked, “Live Beetles Do Not Touch.”

“The absurdity of the whole thing hit me then,” Warner recalls. “I wondered if I might have enough to hang a book on. It also seemed like an opportunity to process the strange experience of being a landlady.” Tenemental is a thoughtful meditation on communal living and urban identity, and Warner endures many hardships, including serious health problems. But much of the memoir is quirky and fun, and Warner delights in calling Providence the “first freakiest” city in New England. “I’ve always been very proud of my sense of humor,” she muses. “I was an awkward kid with bookish interests, so it really helped to be funny. The trick with Tenemental was to make other people laugh, and I really wasn’t sure I could pull it off. But seeing as every review thus far has used the word ‘hilarious,’ I guess I hit the mark.” -Robert Isenberg

Three URI grads are making it easy to be green with their door-to-door compost service

One Man’s Trash Rhodeside Revival starts door-to-door composting service Composting is a nice idea. Wouldn’t we love to turn spoiled leftovers into arable soil? But suppose you live in a high-rise with no green space, much less a vegetable garden. What do you do with your orange rinds and stale bread? Starting this summer, Rhodeside Revival can visit your house and haul away those very food scraps. The brainchild of three URI grads, Conor MacManus, Brendan Loflin, and Miguel Costa, the statewide service started up this month, collecting leftover organic matter from Ocean State homes. “All three of us shared a general environmental awareness and interest in sustainability measures,” says Loflin. “We felt prompted for action once we realized the amount of food waste that was being generated around us every single day.” The trio started out with a composting club on URI’s campus. Five years after graduation, they noticed local communities cracking down on their environmental

footprint. They felt emboldened and decided to start their own company. When subscribers sign up for Rhodeside Revival, they pay a monthly fee and receive a five-gallon bucket. Participants can compost a wide range of food waste, from tea bags and coffee grounds to house plants and fireplace ashes. The material is collected in two trucks and driven to Earth Care Farm in Charlestown. Founded by Michael Marner, Earth Care has performed largescale composting since 1977. Loflin doesn’t expect an overnight success, and the company is starting with only 20 subscribers. But now that the trucks are rolling, he’s hoping for a snowball effect, and Rhodeside Revival aims to enroll 250 to 500 households by the end of its first year. “I’m hoping everyone will be into it,” says Loflin. “If we can be the most environmentally friendly state, then other states will scale up what we’ve done.” RhodesideRevival.com -Robert Isenberg

MAKE A SPLASH Grab a paddle and a board for wet and wild adventures this summer By Miles Temel

Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent

Spending a day at the beach is the water-related activity most readily associated with this part of our state. Even so, Rhode Island’s coastline wouldn’t be the beloved summer destination that it is if it weren’t teeming with other options for getting out onto the water. Here are some of our favorite ways to get off the sand in South County.

Two Sides to Every Paddle There’s a calming allure to paddling in a kayak on a sunny day, and with a setting like the Narrow River running through Narragansett, it’s nearly impossible to step into a kayak and not feel relaxed. “I’ve lived around and boated and swam in Narrow River most of my life. I think it’s a wonderful place,” reflects Narrow River Kayaks’ owner Jason Considine. “I enjoy showing it to people and giving them a way to get out on the water, whether they’re from the area or coming from farther away.” Narrow River Kayaks offers paddlers a multitude of daily and multi-day kayak rental options and group outings. Considine and company also understand that continuing to enjoy Narrow River requires a respect for its pristine ecology. This environmental consciousness has motivated the development of Narrow River Kayaks’ eco-tours, led by a master naturalist who expertly caters the tours to all ages. “It’s a really diverse natural location,” Considine explains. “People are amazed at how beautiful it is, and at the peacefulness of the wildlife refuge. They come back feeling relaxed and wanting to go again.” Narragansett, NarrowRiverKayaks.com

SUP, Everybody? Summer might easily be the best time of year to pick up a new hobby, especially one that gets you out on the water. For the folks at The Kayak Centre, the philosophy of teaching their customers a new and exciting passion has guided the integration of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) into their business. “We were an instructional company before we were a retail company,” says owner Jeff Shapiro. “We have something for everybody who wants to get on a paddleboard.” He isn’t exaggerating. Several different boards are available for rent at either of the Centre’s locations in Wickford and Charlestown, including standard boards, sleeker touring boards, and foot-propelled Hobie pedal boards. On top of that, the Centre hosts SUP classes for paddlers of all skill levels, SUP yoga classes, and guided paddling tours to get patrons out exploring “People don’t always appreciate how beautiful southern Rhode Island is. Standing up on the board gives you a different perspective on things,” Shapiro explains. “Exploring the waterways that way is different from any other experience.” Wickford and Charlestown, KayakCentre.com

Rev It Up Sometimes you need to dial it up a notch. Enter the jet ski: a machine perfect for devil-may-care adrenaline seekers and water enthusiasts alike. Tucked on a side street by Misquamicut State Beach lies The Purple Ape, a one-stop water sport shop. “I get people that have never been on a jet ski before in their life, and by the end of the trip, they’re flying around and they love it,” reflects owner Tom Jasulavic, who has been guiding jet skiers around Westerly waters for years. “Everybody has a great time.” Purple Ape patrons can rent by the half hour or by the hour, and hour-long renters have the option of cruising around Winnapaug Pond or on the open ocean. Although the kick of a jet ski might seem nerve-wracking, Jasulavic is dedicated to ensuring that his riders feel safe and comfortable. “It’s very rare that someone gets on one and decides that they can’t do it,” Jasulavic explains. “I’d say every time they get on and go out, they’re so glad they did it. They say it’s the best time they ever had, and they end up becoming repeat customers.” Westerly, PurpleApe.com

Surfin’ 401 Talk to Peter Pan, local surf instructor and Rhode Island surfing legend, and he’ll convince you there’s no need to leave the state for world-class surfing. “This is the best surfing in the world, as far as I’m concerned,” says Pan – pretty high praise from a guy who has caught waves everywhere from the Jersey shore to Queensland, Australia. Pan shares his passion for big waves with anyone willing to hop on a board through his Peter Pan Surfing and SUP Academy in Narragansett. Water enthusiasts looking to learn how to hang ten can choose from a range of opportunities, from private and group lessons to

several-day surfing camps. And when Pan says they cater to everybody, he means it – he’s taught surfers as young as four and surfers in their seventies. His academy is based out of Narragansett Surf & Skate Shop, where more experienced surfers can rent boards and gear and head out on their own. Pan’s teaching philosophy is all about having fun, and nothing keeps him going more than seeing someone who’s been bitten by the surfing bug. He reflects, “I get people coming back, 10, 15 years later, saying, ‘You got me surfing, and now my kids are surfing.’ That’s pretty cool for me.” Narragansett, PeterPanSurfingAcademy.com

RARE TREASURES Local Mercantile brings charming finds to Wickford Local Mercantile is a Wickford boutique with a charming layout and calming aesthetic. With its less-is-more attitude, the shop carries fewer items than your standard jewelry store, but every piece is hand-crafted, high quality, and functional, perfect for your home or yourself. The bright, open space allows each brand to shine in its own display. Whether it’s made of leather, ceramic, wood, or metal, everything Local carries is proudly made in the United States. Local showcases the handiwork of Alex and Ani as well as other lines, such as Jewelry Capital Manufacturing Co., which nods to Rhode Island’s jewelry history. The colorful suede and leather bags are hand-cut and stitched in Fall River by

designer Frank Clegg. A beautiful selection of stoneware and accessories comes from Farmhouse Pottery in Woodstock, Vermont. And if you need a table to put it on, Lorimer Studios of RI has a variety of domestic woods and styles to choose from. Throws from Brahams Mount, produced on antique looms, complete a living room. Elixir is the company’s own line of fragrances, soaps, candles, body creams, and more. Based on the four traditional elements – Air, Earth, Fire, Water – house chemist Joseph Allaire can create your own personal perfume. It’s a fun and engaging process, and patrons fully participate. Building on layers of fragrance and oils of your choice, Allaire mixes and bottles your

signature scent right there in the store’s apothecary and beauty bar. It is a truly one-of-a-kind gift to yourself, or you can pick up a gift card and share this unique experience. 1. “The ocean is my only question about acupuncthe barriers between Eastern and medication.” So sang ture is whether the neeWestern medicine Jimmy Buffet in the Zac dles hurt, and my answer is Brown Band song “Knee Deep.” That sentia confident “no.” Dr. Sabins explained that ment might speak to many Rhode Islanders some points on the body are simply more during the summer, but I had the chance to sensitive to needles, but even in those arexplore another alternative medicine – acueas, I felt nothing more than a quick tingle. puncture and craniosacral therapy with Dr. Most of the needles were inserted around Meredith Sabins in North Kingstown. Acumy neck and shoulders to address some puncture is said to stimulate energy flow by stiffness there, but Dr. Sabins also placed inserting needles at points on the body’s some in my lower back, behind my knees, energy lines. The very concept of energy on my feet, and even on my outstretched flow was new to me, but I entered Dr. Sahands. I must have looked like a porcupine. bins’ home with an open mind and nervous After the needles were all in place, Dr. excitement. Sabins left the room for 30 minutes to After a quick conversation with Dr. Salet the treatment take effect. Calm music bins about how she would focus the treatplayed; the lighting was low. As the minment, I hopped on her treatment table, and utes passed, my eyelids grew heavy, and she began placing needles. The inevitable my mind began to wander in an almost

dreamlike way. I wasn’t sure if I dozed off, which means I probably did. Dr. Sabins had mentioned that acupuncture needles sometimes cause a patient’s body temperature to drop, and I began feeling a cool sensation around my legs that was somewhat soothing, especially juxtaposed against the warmth of a heat lamp she had positioned above my neck. When several minutes had gone by, I felt as if the muscles in my body had gradually unclenched, and I contentedly lay still. Dr. Sabins re-entered the room, removed the needles, and began with the craniosacral therapy. This technique releases muscle constriction and re-balances cerebral fluid through light touch at critical points on the body. She began the treatment at my feet, then shifted to my knees, up to my abdomen, and finally to my head, neck, and shoulders. Whatever its mechanics, the process certainly settled me down, and I even felt a bit dazed when she was finished. Dr. Sabins earned her master’s from the Arizona School of Acupuncture, and she wishes to break down the binary of Western-versus-Eastern medicine. She acknowledges that both schools of thought have their merits and aren’t mutually exclusive. Her gentle demeanor and patience set me even more at ease. Regardless of how well I processed the events of my session, I admit that I emerged feeling as if the nervous energy from my day had been redirected. My muscles felt less tense across my body, I was insanely relaxed, and I slept terrifically that night. There’s a lot to be said for a cool ocean plunge on a scorching summer day, but for its rejuvenating power, acupuncture might well be worth a shot.

Heart of Glass

When Peggy Corcoran was working in furniture design, she took a class on stained glass. The new medium hooked her, and she immersed herself in the centuries-old craft. After being laid off at a small design firm and wondering what to do next, Corcoran found a space for rent and in 2005 opened up her airy, light-filled studio and workshop. Bosgraaf, which is Corcoran’s maiden name, is named in honor of her parents, especially her father, who always supported her entrepreneurial spirit. Stained glass has been around since the first century. What makes it special? The colors of the glass are magical, hypnotic, and beautiful. You need only a small amount of light to bring the glass to life. Can you share your process?

58

SORhodeIsland.com • July 2018

The process of building a stained glass window has changed little over time. Pieces of flat glass are cut and assembled edge to edge using copper foil, lead, and solder to create an image. These days, there are new tools and technology to simplify the process. A lot of people say how lucky I am to be able to do what you love. It’s a lot of hard work and long hours, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Can you tell us about your clientele and why they go to Bosgraaf? My clients are homeowners, builders, cabinetmakers, and interior designers. Most are looking for custom work, but I also do a lot of repair and restoration work. I’m an artist, a craftsman, and a perfectionist. I build a window to last 100 years or more – certainly beyond my lifetime.

Peggy Corcoran crafts one-of-a-kind stained glass windows at her Peace Dale Studio

How is your work inspired by South County? South County is such a beautiful area. I find inspiration in so many things here – the details of the architecture, stained glass in churches, and the beautiful coastline. Many of my clients are looking for nautical themes and I’m fortunate to be able to drive to the beach, to a lighthouse, or to a marsh for inspiration. What does stained glass do to a space? Stained glass can transform a space. It can become a focal point, bathing a room in color. It can be an architectural element in a room, a decorative element in a cabinet door, offer privacy in a bathroom or bedroom, and hide an unpleasant view. What does one need to think about when adding a custom piece to their home? There are many elements that go into designing a stained glass window for a client. I want the window to look like it belongs in the space, as if it was always there. That means asking a lot of questions to get a sense of style, what they like and more importantly, what they don’t like. Most times, I visit the location to see the space and how the light will affect the glass. I work closely with my clients to design a window that will stand the test of time. After all, it is an investment. You offer classes and workshops. How did this come about? When I opened the studio, I had to offer classes to pay the bills. What surprised me was how much I enjoy teaching stained glass. I currently have eight classes a week with close to 60 students. Openings are usually filled immediately. Two years ago, I decided to give my students an opportunity to sell their work. We now hold an annual Christmas sale the first Saturday in December, which has been an enormous success.

A land-based home in Charlestown still feels like seaside New England

The spoils of Rhode Island can sometimes be overlooked by people less familiar with the Ocean State, but once they uncover our hidden coastal gems, they never look back. Such was the case for two New York City natives who raised their children in Western Massachusetts. “When I was growing up, I always went to Nantucket with my family,” says the homeowner. So when the couple decided to pursue a second home, Nantucket is where they started, expanding their search to Martha’s Vineyard. What they found

was a number of delightful homes – and sticker shock. They decided to extend their search to coastal Connecticut, but still couldn’t find “the one.” It wasn’t until the couple’s daughter visited a friend in Quonochontaug (better known as “Quonnie”) that Rhode Island landed on their radar. Originally the couple was looking for a home on the water, but they found themselves intrigued by a home that was a smidge further inland – yet still captured the essence of seaside living. “Our realtor

showed us this place in Charlestown and we just fell in love with it,” says the homeowner. The shingle-style home was built in the early 2000s and evokes a traditional feel with a modern touch. The first floor boasts an open floor plan, where the kitchen, dining room, and living room blend seamlessly together. “It’s sort of an unusual house,” says the homeowner. “It doesn’t really speak to Charlestown; seems more like Watch Hill or Westerly.” It’s easy to determine why: the home was designed by Westerly-based Arnold Design Group, which has drafted more than 800 residential projects through the years, with many in Watch Hill, Westerly, and Quonnie. Even their builder, Pete Peloquin, was based out of Westerly. “[The home] looks like it’s facing sideways on the lot. It’s sort of funny,” says the homeowner.

The house has many highlights, including spacious bedrooms, walls of windows that let natural light pour in, and ample space on the second floor landing, which can be used for a temporary bed set-up (“It’s like camp!” says the homeowner). But the couple knew the house was a perfect fit when they laid eyes on one rare feature – the built-in bookshelves. “There are these nautical maps that line the bookcases and I just fell in love with it,” says the homeowner. “You can see Block Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and all the islands we have visited in the past.” The home was turnkey and the couple changed very little, but the surrounding property was another matter. “We totally reclaimed the land,” says the homeowner. “The garden was just weeds. The bushes

and trees were full of invasive species. It was pretty much a disaster… you could barely see the front door.” The driveway was actually a well-designed circular drive that was “so overgrown you could barely use it.” The couple worked hard with a crew to remove all the weeds and low brush, transforming the entry and landscape into a peaceful welcoming space. “Now it’s very peaceful,” says the homeowner, and those vibes continue as you enter the house into the “Zen room,” a quiet and tranquil space that echoes the purpose of this entire home – to relax and unwind.

“This is a great retreat for us,” says the couple, who welcome family to the home throughout the year. Even their dog, an Irish Setter/Golden Retriever pup, seems decidedly mellow in this special home near the sea. The couple says whenever they walk through the door, a sense of calm washes over. “We immediately relax and breathe in the fresh air… You definitely have different air here, sea air, and we’re not far from Ninigret Pond. Even the light is different.” It seems the maps led them to the right place after all.

Coastal Date Night

Driving toward Atlantic Avenue in Misquamicut to meet my wife for dinner, I passed a gauntlet of beachy destinations – Purple Ape rentals and the pink Sea Shell Motel. It started to sink in: I was in Vacationland. Most visitors to this area are familiar with the high-traffic tourist venues, like the raucous Paddy’s Beach Club and iconic Andrea Beach Bar. But tucked into this same strip is Maria’s Seaside Cafe, a hidden gem serving authentic Italian cuisine, local seafood, and house-made pasta. While the beach itself is the main draw, Maria’s is certainly destination-worthy in its own right. From prompt valet service to professional front-of-house staff, Maria’s took care of me and my wife throughout the whole experience – and, as you’ll see, in one way we never expected. Maria’s, like other establishments in Misquamicut ruined by Hurricane Sandy, has only recently reopened. The building has a large, white dining room, and windows face the direction of the dunes. The breezy atmosphere and whiteand-red striped table umbrellas on the restaurant’s patio remind you of the nearby ocean, and you can just see the top of a lifeguard chair. The horseshoe bar anchors the back section, with lively discussions from patrons joining the happy

and boisterous conversations in the dining room. After having my car valeted (always appreciated in an area with limited parking) I waited for my wife to arrive from work and busily enjoyed some warm bread with olive oil and fresh basil pesto. I also indulged in Maria’s signature cocktail, Putin’s Mule ($10): Stoli vodka, ginger beer, pomegranate juice, and fresh lime and mint served in a gently sweating copper mug. Absolutely refreshing – and potent. And then there was the incident: I pushed the bread basket too close to the table candle, and the paper napkin caught on fire. In seconds, the bread basket was in flames. This was entirely my fault, but the manager expertly snatched the basket and ran it into the kitchen to be doused. Now that is service. After my wife arrived, I confessed with embarrassment to the pyrotechnics she had missed. Still, the staff brought our appetizers as if nothing had happened: four Narragansett oysters ($8) and Nicola’s Calamari Alla Griglia ($10). Grilled squid is hard to do correctly, and Maria’s nailed it with that perfect tender snap, which complements the smoky herb-and-lemon overtones. The oysters tasted maritime-fresh and were served with cocktail sauce and vinegar on

a tray of ice. My wife loved her sip of the Putin’s Mule so much that she ordered one for herself. For entrees, we wanted to keep the locavore theme going and ordered the Pan Seared Stonington Sea Scallops ($30) served with an Italian lobster couscous, along with asparagus and sundried tomatoes. For the second entree, we selected a frequent special: House-made Pappardelle ($26) tossed with 12-hour, red wine-braised short rib pieces, plus mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, and goat cheese. Both the Pappardelle and short ribs were exquisite; the scallops were perfectly seared, their surfaces nicely caramelized, and they paired quite well with a glass of Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio ($12). The pasta dish had a wonderful savory sauce with tender, smoky short ribs. We also got a tasty side dish of Broccoli Rabe ($7) dressed in a light, lemony butter sauce. We looked at each other between bites and murmured, “Wow, this is good.” We ended the evening with a Rhubarb

The Smell of Success Jane LeBlanc can smoke just about any meat or veggie at The Flatts in Wakefield Armed with a can-do attitude and a hefty dose of nostalgia, lifelong Peace Dale resident Jane LaBlanc spearheaded The Flatts, South County’s premiere smokehouse. She transformed Giro’s, a beloved neighborhood joint that closed some time ago, and lovingly renovated the 150-year-old restaurant by hand, with a little help from her friends. She talked to us about her wending journey from real estate agent to restauranteur. Your background is in real estate. What made you decide to open a restaurant? I was showing the property to a potential restauranteur and he kept saying “no, no way” while we walked through. And I was like, Are you kidding me? I thought it would be amazing to have a new neighborhood place. So, I figured I would do it.

Can you tell us about the smoking process? It all starts with the dry rub, which usually sits overnight. Different meats require different smoking times as well as different types of wood. For example, mesquite has a really heavy smoke to it, which is great for pork or beef, while something like shrimp needs a more delicate smoke, like a hickory. We smoke pretty much anything — meats, vegetables. We have a delicious homemade hummus on our menu that starts with smoked chickpeas. If you can eat it, we’re going to try to smoke it! What’s the strangest thing you’ve smoked? The strangest — for now — has to be prime rib, simply because it would have been an expensive failure. It came out awesome. Even the au jus had a wonderful smoke to it. I want to smoke a cheesecake. That’s next on the experiment list!

74

SORhodeIsland.com • July 2018

The Flatt’s menu is a fantastic mix of old school smokehouse with a contemporary twist, including some unexpected vegetarian items. Even your cocktails are unique. How did you come up with it? I am not a trained chef and sometimes what works at home does not translate in a restaurant setting. So, I have these crazy ideas but then I have a wonderful chef and staff to bring me back to earth. I was lucky that I opened in November, after most of the restaurants in the area trim their staff. So I was able to hire seasoned people to help me learn the ropes.

South Kingstown to get a liquor license. It was one of those neighborhood places where you come on Sunday afternoon and all your family and friends would be there. It was important for me to retain that community connection. And the community wanted it. When I got my liquor license, everyone in Town Hall cheered! Last summer, while I painted the front of the building, people kept stopping by sharing stories about all their “firsts” at Giro’s. First dates, first drinks. The entire community was behind me to make sure that this worked.

This particular building has a rich history in Peace Dale. Can you talk about that a bit? Giro’s was an Italian restaurant that opened 150 years ago. It was the first restaurant in

What made you decide on the smokehouse concept? A bunch of my friends kept driving to Middletown to get good barbecue. If folks are willing to cross two bridges to eat, I thought there was something to that. I gave them what they wanted closer to home.

All in the Family

From the outside, you couldn’t see a difference: Besos Kitchen & Cocktails looked the same as ever, an elegant eatery housed in a former 19th century tavern in East Greenwich. The name and decor seemed the same, as did the menu. But something had changed in April: Besos was purchased by The Martucci Group, one of the largest restaurant operators in Rhode Island. “When we decided to move on, we set out to find someone who would appreciate the people, ideas, hard work, and historic value that make Besos so unique,” said Kristin Della

New ownership, same exquisite presentation: Braised Short Ribs at Besos

Grotta, who opened the restaurant with her husband Mike in 2011, in a statement. “We are honored to pass the baton from one Italian family to another.” What does this mean to the average Besos fan? Minor change and slow evolution. But the most immediate perk is Besos’ new siblings: Martucci already owns Safehouse Modern Neighborhood Eatery and The Trap Brew Pub

& Grill – also located in East Greenwich – as well as the Chianti Catering company. Members of the Martucci Group loyalty program can rack up points toward their next visit, and they can even download a Martucci Group app, which can help make reservations and anticipate wait times. The most important things will remain intact: the wraparound porch for al fresco dining, the trademark grilled pizza, and the rainbow of craft cocktails showcasing local ingredients. Some traditions are sacred. East Greenwich, BesosKitchenAndCocktails.com

And it’s not Farmer Willie’s anymore, but Willie’s Superbrew. The Pawtucket-based company went through a branding metamorphosis at the end of May, with a jazzy new look, two new flavors, and a comprehensive list of ingredients. “The fact that alcohol brands don’t have to disclose ingredients or nutrition facts on packaging doesn’t make sense,” opined Willie’s co-founder Nico Enriquez in a release. “It’s crazy that we don’t know what’s in our drinks. With our Superbrew, we’re being fully transparent – we not only tell you everything that’s in it, but we’re proud of it.” Willie’s has its roots in Cape Cod, where an actual goat farmer named Willie Fenichel experimented with tiny batches of ginger beer and won a rabid following. Fenichel’s pastime changed course when he teamed up with Brown graduates Enriquez and Max Easton. The heavily bearded character of “Farmer Willie” has served as the company’s mascot since the brewery started in 2016. Willie’s is one of many breweries running production from The Guild, a shared brewing space in downtown Pawtucket. Willie’s has now retired its trademark beard in favor of festive, multi-colored cans. Meanwhile, the new “Superbrew” moniker comes with two new concoctions: Sparkling Ginger & Lemon and Sparkling Pomegranate & Acai. For the health-conscious, each superbrew is gluten-free and contains only 120 calories. SuperBrew.com

Mariner Grille in Narragansett is the kind of place you need to visit more than once to truly get the whole experience. From their commitment to the freshest possible seafood and produce to their lively lounge that hosts musicians every weekend, Mariner Grille is perfect for a romantic date night or a fun gathering of family and friends. Chef Artur Akopov serves New England fare with international influences. His signature

Osso Bucco, a Guinness-braised pork shank with aromatic vegetables, smothered with pan jus, keeps diners coming back again and again. Other menu favorites: Stuffed Salmon, with lobster and asparagus stuffing, topped with a lemon bechamel; and Drunken Scallops, poached in wines with garlic butter and a sherry crumble. Burgers, salads and apps to share round out the enticing menu.
