OCEANS TIES Mystic Aquarium volunteer turns beach debris into bracelets to raise awareness of plastic pollution If you’ve taken a walk on the beach, you’ve likely stumbled across the reminders of human environmental impact in the form of discarded or washed-up debris. Plastic, rope, trash – exactly the kinds of things Westerly’s Heather Bring, eight-year-old son Jack, and service dog Marea make a point to collect, clean, and craft into bracelets. “I started because I started to lose dexterity in my hands,” Heather, longtime volunteer at Mystic Aquarium, begins. “It was like a form of physical therapy.” Over the course of the last six years, Heather has had over 14 surgeries and procedures related to health conditions affecting her connective tissue and brain. Shortly after the first, in 2013, she began volunteering with the first response team at Mystic and then at their clinic working to rehabilitate seals and sea turtles. Heather, who grew up in Hawaii, has always loved the ocean, and walks along the beach became not only crucial to her mental and physical recovery, but a way to bond with her son and instill in him the love she felt for
the water. However, Heather also saw a chance for environmental advocacy. “I want them to be conversation-starters,” says Heather about the bracelets. The recycled jewelry combines the rope picked up by Marea and Jack with metal hardware and whimsical pendants. “That this is why we need to take care of the ocean.” She started giving them to volunteers during last year’s summer outreach program, and today, it’s evolved into a community effort amongst the entire animal rescue team. “We are so grateful for the way she is bringing attention to the plastic pollution problem,” says Dale Wolbrink, the aquarium’s Director of Public Relations, applauding Heather’s “strength and perseverance, nevermind the amount of time she gives in a volunteer role.” For Heather, the goal is simple: “The ocean has given so much to us. We want to give back to the ocean.” Find Heather’s bracelets on Mystic Aquarium’s donation page, or on sale during their Seals on the Rocks event on July 26. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the aquarium. MysticAquarium.org -Megan Schmit

water, an ice chest, and electricity. After adding some South Pacific touches, he launched Cap’n Mike’s Tiki Boat. The vessel cruises around Point Judith Pond selling refreshments to hungry boaters who flag him down. He also serves the beach-goers who splash around at two of Jerusalem’s unofficial beaches – “Dog Beach” and “Baby Beach” – where he anchors just off-shore. “I was a life-long boater and spent my childhood summers on the pond,” Michael says. “When I’d be out fishing, I’d want something cold and refreshing. I’d wish that there was a boat that could bring it to me. So, I created it.” Selling ice cream, milkshakes, and bottled water as well as steamed Nathan’s hot dogs, chips, and pretzels, the floating snack shack was such a success that Michael decided to turn one boat into two. With the addition of a new pontoon party boat, Cap’n Mike now runs a tiki fleet. Modeled after the floating tiki bars in Florida, this party boat fits up to six for pleasure cruises along the pond. After a test run, Michael says his first passengers were wildly enthusiastic. “They used the Bluetooth speakers and turned on Jimmy Buffet. We had Margaritaville on the boat.” The party pontoon launches from Rams Marina in Wakefield. It comes equipped with a blender, ice, cocktail mixers, cups, and the aforementioned speakers. Passengers provide the alcohol and food. Michael takes them on a cruise around the pond for a two-and-a-half-hour tour. “You can’t beat the setting,” he says. You can find Cap’n Mike on the pond every day the sun is out, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with an extended season for the party boat. Even with a seasonal business, Michael doesn’t feel like he’s missing out on summer. “My days are spent on the water making people happy. There’s nothing better than that.” Wakefield, CapnMikes.com. -Karen Greco

Gone With The Wind The REcharge Academy teams up with local organizations to train a new generation of green energy pros
When students first show up to REcharge Academy, they have to answer a few questions: What do they already know about green energy? What are some problems they foresee when they hear the phrase “wind farm”? What happens when the wind dies down? Don’t windmills kill birds? Aren’t they an eyesore? Don’t they drive down property values? Michael Arquin likes to start with the things people already know – or think they know – and work from there. That’s the idea behind REcharge Academy, the Minnesota-based educational initiative that will host a workshop this summer at the University of Rhode Island. More than anything, Michael wants to get people talking. “We don’t do a lot of lecturing,” says Michael. “We know everybody comes to us with prior knowledge. So, we ask them: What have you heard about energy that
18
SORhodeIsland.com • July 2019
sounds like a credible bad thing?” A former science teacher, Michael is also the creator of KidWind, a national green-energy workshop for young students. He describes the KidWind Challenge as a kind of “pinewood derby” for children, who develop and test homemade wind turbines. In a way, the REcharge Academy is a grown-up version of this 15-year-old curriculum: Educators learn about the science, benefits, and politics of wind energy, in order to bring that knowledge to their own classrooms. This month, the REcharge event at URI is notable for several reasons: First, Michael is partnering with URI’s Coastal Resources Center, with the Guiding Education and Math and Science Network (GEMSnet Program), the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, and RealJobsRI. Michael hopes to attract about 25 local and 25 national educators to the three-day event. Meanwhile, KidWind is
helping Rhode Island high schools develop a certification in wind energy, which will help train future energy professionals. “Teachers will get to hear about environmental assessments, that kind of stuff,” says Michael. “We’ll have some panels on what a certificate program in this field looks like.” Since it was started 11 years ago, the REcharge Academy has helped train more than 400 teachers from around the world. Incredibly, this is the first session that will focus on offshore wind energy; the Academy will finish off with a field trip to the Block Island Wind Farm. Most participants are eager, but there are occasional skeptics. “The hardest teachers to crack are the physics teachers,” Michael adds with a chuckle. “They think they’re the smartest people in the room – and they usually are. But by the end, they can be heavily engaged.” Narragansett, KidWind.org -Robert Isenberg

Artistic Ability Jamestown artist Jason Hamel continues to pursue his passions after life-changing accident
Photography by Robert Isenberg
In his home studio, Jason positions an easel close to his computer to use friends’ digital photos as inspiration
In 2017, Jason Hamel decided to try painting. Lots of people do. But Jason had a unique challenge: He couldn’t use his arms or legs. Ever since a fateful bicycle accident two decades ago, Jason has gotten around exclusively by wheelchair. He uses a special trackpad to operate his computer. To even cover a canvas in pigments, much less create the lavish portrait of a sunflower in full bloom, he had to clench the brush in his teeth. “I just did this one painting,” says Jason. “But everybody reacted to it.” Deep into his forties, Jason found abrupt success: A friend recommended Sprout Gallery in Providence, and he was quickly commissioned with a solo show. Sprout waived its commission fee and turned the exhibit into a benefit; all sales would help Jason purchase a wheelchair-accessible van. The offer was exciting, but also required a
staggering amount of labor. “I had to bang out all these paintings in like four months,” Jason recalls. He created portrait after portrait, honing his newfound skills. Flowers became lighthouses, a red barn, and a windmill. His landscapes became more extravagant and daring. One work, “Beavertail Lighthouse at Sunset,” is a dreamy collision of sunlight, reflection, and color-laced clouds. The 2018 exhibit was a success. He now owns the van. And best of all: “I’ve been painting ever since.” One might view Jason’s story as tragic – a rising BMX star and the crash that immobilized him. But Jason has been living an active and fruitful life. He credits his late father with profound dedication, for normalizing and even enhancing his daily experiences. After the accident, Jason maintained a strong social network. He went to concerts and became friendly with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones;
he even made an appearance in one of their music videos. A former potter, he stuck to the arts and earned a degree in graphic design from Rhode Island College; he’s worked extensively as a freelancer. Jason has never met another artist who uses his mandibular painting technique, but he recently found a kindred spirit. Up in Massachusetts, Peter Damon is an Iraqi veteran who lost both his arms in a helicopter accident. He is also a prolific painter and owner of True Grit Art Gallery. Jason and Peter have corresponded about their shared creative perseverance. They have even talked about featuring Jason’s canvases. This means Jason has a lot of work to do. Three-quarters of his paintings have sold, he is eager to get his work out there. “Basically,” he says, “I’m just going to keep going.” See Jason’s work at JasonHamel.net. -Robert Isenberg

A throwback to the ranch’s heyday as a music venue in 1997
Rock On! On July 6, 1974, legendary rockers Aerosmith captivated the crowd at Stepping Stone Ranch in West Greenwich (originally the Town of Escoheag), pounding out hits like “Dream On” and “Same Old Song and Dance” and closing their 12-song set with fan favorite, “Mama Kin”. The band was part of a 12-hour festival called Freedom Jam, featuring top-billed artists along with others like Sha Na Na and Brownsville Station. They’re all part of a Stepping Stone Ranch honor roll, which includes luminaries like Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, The Moody Blues, Muddy Waters, The Big Bopper, and Pink Floyd – who’ve graced that stage, all while the property remained an active ranch and rustic wedding venue. However, as riding lessons, boarding, and other equine-focused programming brought the ranch to nearly 30 horses, the entertainment business slowed considerably. Some annual shows, like the Cajun & Bluegrass

Festival (the event that launched today’s Rhythm & Roots Festival) and reggae shows continued through the late ‘90s/early 2000s, but ranch owners Darrell and Heidi Waldron had their hands full. It wasn’t until the couple was talking to longtime friend and musician Lori Lawhorne that ideas for a revival concert started swirling. “We’re hoping it’ll bring new life to the ranch,” says Darrell, who has a special relationship with the ranch. Since he was 13, he’d spent summers there as a stable boy, sleeping in the barn’s hayloft. It’s where he and Heidi, who at the same age also went to Stepping Stone, met and fell in love. They married 10 years later and today, are excited to share with others a return to “the good ‘ol days.” Lori and her husband Dave Ross (longtime familiar face at Ross Music in Warwick) have organized two marquee events to benefit the ranch and bring it back to its former glory, starting with “Steppingstock” on July 20. The
concert marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the iconic three-day music festival in 1969 held in New York State and arguably the most famous rock festival ever. Steppingstock will feature, among other acts, three tribute bands, featuring the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young by Trinity, the music of The Who by Who Are You, and the music of Jimi Hendrix by Blue Wild Gypsy. The second summer event, Rock the Ranch, unfolds on August 11, featuring southern/country rock acts like Scott Fowler & Southbound, Barefoot Rebel (a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute), and Brothers All (an Allman Brothers tribute band). Tickets for each event are just $20 and children under 10 are free, but make sure to bring your own lawn chairs! A portion of ticket sales from both events will go toward restoring the stage for more acts to come. West Greenwich, SteppingStoneRanch.com -Andrea E. McHugh

One of the great things about Rhode Island is the ocean. It makes for unbeatable views, day trips, and water activities, but it also means you’re not stuck taking a train, bus, car, or bike – the ocean is your form of transport, too. Why not mix up that summer road trip with a ferry ride to your favorite coastal destinations? -Megan Schmit
Martha’s Vineyard Ferry Venture to Martha’s Vineyard, that summer haven known for dining, shopping, beaches and farmland, and the setting for the movie Jaws. Lounge on the sundeck or in air conditioned comfort and make it to the scenic island in under two hours. The best part? BOB RATIGAN Mural Master Bob Ratigan Makes Art Fun For All Through Lessons & Paint Nights Bob Ratigan is something like a celebrity around South County. He’s responsible for the fanciful, Tuscan-inspired walls of Main Street Coffee (MSC) in East Greenwich and the colorful, larger-thanlife murals in North Kingstown’s Biomes Marine Biology Center. When he’s not crouched staining a sidewalk or making a kid’s favorite book come to life on their bedroom wall, Bob is spreading his love for art to others. We sat down with the mural master himself at MSC to learn more about what he has in store for artists and amateurs alike. What inspired you to start Ratigan Studio? My father was one of the last billboard artists, so I grew up in the kind of environment that valued old world, hand-crafted, hand-painted art. I’ve been painting for about 30 years now. I try to keep that talent alive through the work I do, whether it’s designing a mural for a client or teaching kids how to paint.
What kinds of services do you offer? As a full-service studio, we can really do anything, from corporate events like holiday parties and team building, to private birthdays, fundraisers, baby showers, and bachelorette parties. Paint nights are $35 per person for a two-hour session, materials – and music! – supplied. What can we expect from a Ratigan paint night? We have one of the best paint nights out there. The atmosphere is fun and engaging. I encourage people to wander and comment on each other’s work or, at Biomes, to explore the fish tanks and check out the murals. The most important thing is that you have a good time and walk out having had the most fun and with the best possible painting. It’s a way for me to give to others the beautiful experience I get every day as an artist.

SECRET BEACHES Get away from your summer routine – and the crowds – by exploring some of the state’s under-the-radar spots By John Taraborelli
Think you’re a true Rhode Island beach bum? Quick quiz: the state has more than 100 public and private beaches – how many have you visited? How many can you even name? Thought so. This summer, go beyond the beaches you know and explore the many under-appreciated miles of coastline that make this the Ocean State. Here are some faves:

SORhodeIsland.com • July 2019
SOUTH COUNTY Primarily billed as a fishing area, Narragansett’s Camp Cronin is also popular with bird watchers and boasts breathtaking views of Block Island Sound. Ocean Road, Narragansett. No admission or parking fee. Westerly’s Sandy Point was once an extension of Napatree Point (which also has a beach that could be considered “secret”), but became an “island” in the Hurricane of ’38. It’s mostly a nature preserve but does offer a public beach. Getting there requires a boat and a permit from Stonington, CT, which claims ownership of five of the island’s 35 acres. North Kingstown’s Calf Pasture Point Beach is one of the most pristine and deserted in the state. Nestled in the Quonset area, it’s accessible from the Davisville Bike Path and is more popular with wildlife than people. Off the Davisville Bike Path, North Kingstown. No admission or parking fee. Though it’s mostly home to a private club, Quonochontaug (or “Quonnie”) Beach has a small public parking lot, so get there early. It’s located on a narrow stretch between the salt pond of the same name and the Block Island Sound. It’s remote, but worth the effort. Sand Trail, Charlestown. No admission or parking fee.
Fogland Beach in Tiverton
THE ISLANDS Cast off as unwanted by the Newport elites at the private Bailey’s Beach, ”Reject’s Beach” isn’t even an official beach. It’s a small strip of beachfront that’s separated from its ritzy neighbor by a fence and a rope that goes out into the water. There’s no parking, and it’s generally only accessible by foot or bike, but lesser nobility are welcome. Off the Cliff Walk. No admission or parking fee. Jamestown’s Mackerel Cove Town Beach is located on the “beaver tail” that gives Beavertail State Park its name. Though light on amenities, it’s a relatively tranquil spot popular with families. Beavertail Road, Jamestown. Pay to park, but no admission. Occupying the same peninsula at the southeastern end of Aquidneck Island as Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, Middletown’s Third Beach (aka Navy Beach) is small and relatively quiet, with shallow water
and minimal waves. Pets welcome after 5pm. Third Beach Road, Middletown. Pay to park, but no admission. Teddy’s Beach in Portsmouth is one of the few that’s pet friendly, which for some will make up for the lack of amenities. Find it near the northern tip of Aquidneck Island, directly across the water from Tiverton’s Grinnell’s Beach, itself worthy of under appreciated status. Park Avenue, Portsmouth. No admission or parking fee. Perched out at the end of one of the two extensions of land that enclose Block Island’s Great Salt Pond, Charleston Beach is not easy to get to and has no amenities, but it offers respite from the crowds and peaceful views of the boats entering New Harbor. Bring your own supplies and enjoy one of Rhode Island’s – nay, the world’s – last great unspoiled places. Off Champlin Road, Block Island. No admission or parking fee.
EAST BAY Little Compton’s Goosewing Beach is a narrow spit of land between open ocean and a coastal pond that’s adjacent to South Shore Beach. It’s also a historic landmark and Nature Conservancy preserve for rare birds. Off South Shore Road, Little Compton. Pay to park at South Shore Beach, but no admission. Tiverton’s Fogland Beach occupies a small peninsula that juts out into the Sakonnet River, creating a small cove on its north side that’s great for nature lovers or families with children. It also has a nature conservation area. 3 Rod Way off Fogland Road. Pay to park, but no admission. Warren Town Beach offers shallow water that’s good for kids (as well as a playground) and is right next to Burr’s Hill Park, providing picnicking and recreational opportunities. Off Water Street, Warren. No admission or parking fee. Almost more of a park than a beach, Union Street Beach is just off the main drag in Downtown Bristol. There’s a grassy plot with benches and picnic tables leading down to a small area for swimming and sunbathing. Bring a cooler and watch the boats go by. Union Street, Bristol. No admission or parking fee.

Y New vision meets historic charm in Wickford
ou are sitting in a kayak, in the middle of the harbor. Sailboat masts rise all around you. The skyline is studded with colorful cottages, trees, waterfront parks. You smile approvingly at the white window trim, the shingled siding and roofs. As you paddle past the weathered remains of bygone piers, a low bridge looms close. Narrowly passing under it, your kayak glides down an inlet toward Academy Cove. The banks are reinforced with stone and greenery. Wow, you think to yourself. This is just... beautiful. From every angle, Wickford Village looks like a lavish landscape photograph – and locals have carefully maintained its frameable ambiance. Wickford still grooms its iconic coastal beauty, primping every square foot. The village center comprises just a couple of main streets; the total population is only a few thousand. Yet Wickford has survived the test of time, and historic references are prominently displayed. Vine-covered trellises stand everywhere; carved mermaids and figureheads decorate the 200-year-old houses. You would not be the first compare it to a Winslow Homer painting. Or the set of Gilmore Girls. Wickford has also stood firm through the ages, adapting to new types of visitors. Once a prominent port, Wickford Harbor is now crowded all summer with private boats, fishing vessels, stand-up paddleboarders, and yes, kayaks, thanks to the massive Kayak Centre on Brown Street. On certain mornings, you can spot yoga classes doing warrior poses on their stand-up paddle boards. To see Wickford from the water is to appreciate its centuries of nautical traffic. “You can paddle past the docks,” says Rachel McCarty, who works for The Kayak Centre. “It’s a shallow harbor, and there aren’t many powerboats. You can see a working fisherman’s wharf. We do moonlight tours, sunset tours. There’s a lot to see."
The Kayak Centre keeps the nautical tradition afloat in Wickford
The history of Wickford is full of surprises, starting with its bizarre geography. Within three square miles, there’s Wickford Harbor, Wickford Cove, Fishing Cove, Mill Cove, and Academy Cove, which all connect. Land is broken up into various points, inlets, and islands, and the terrain changes every few hundred feet; one minute, you’re strolling past the white picket fences of Washington Street. Walk for five more, and you stumble into the busy marina of Wickford Shipyard. Six minutes beyond that, you step onto the sands of North Kingstown Town Beach, seemingly far from anywhere. These sheltered waters have attracted mariners since time immemorial, from Narragansett fishermen to Roger Williams himself, who purchased the parcel in 1637. From the moment the English merchant Richard Smith opened his trading post – then called Cocumscussoc – Wickford became one of the most important harbors in the state. A memorial plaque on Main Street shows an illustration of its heyday: The “Grand Highway” is busy with horses, workers, women in bonnets, and gentlemen in top hats. But Wickford elders made some risky decisions. They voted against a railroad line through town, and the resulting station, Wickford Junction, is actually two miles inland. “The overly ambitious Wickford waterfront property owners raised wharfage prices,” reads another plaque, and a lot of the shipping business moved elsewhere. Making up for lost income, Wickford became a steamboat port and summer getaway, as well as a train stop between Providence and Newport. In 2015, Wickford faced another economic crisis: Wilson’s of Wickford, a well-known clothing store, would close its doors. The family-owned store had been a pillar of Wickford’s retail economy for 70 years. Many feared a downward slide; Wickford is scenic, but it’s easy to bypass on Route 4. Wilson’s was a major draw, and locals wondered what could replace it. And then, other businesses began to fill that void.

Shayna’s Place is a community hub where people can eat in an inclusive atmosphere
A
A Retail Renaissance On a warm morning, Shayna’s Place is pretty much always busy. Street parking is all taken. Patrons occupy bistro tables out front. There’s probably a line. And when the ice cream window opens on the side of the building, visitors crowd around it. “We focus on an inclusive, community-driven environment,” says Matthew Olerio, co-owner of Shayna’s. “Food has always been a big part of our family.” The Olerios have long been based in Rhode Island. Matthew’s parents are former bandmates (they once opened for Tina Turner), and they used to run a food stand. They dedicated most of their careers to selling gelato wholesale. Matthew’s wife Marjorie grew up in Maine, and they met during college in Boston. The couple moved around a bit, including a stint in New York. When the couple found themselves in a “transitional period,” the extended family banded together to open a food-forward diner in Wickford. “We had observed what metropolitan areas had to offer,” says Matthew. “Wickford always had that center-of-town feel. There’s a real openness [here]. We’re a little more mellow and a little more laidback than some other places.” The restaurant takes its name from Matthew’s niece, who has become a local character: She’s an avowed foodie, and she serves as the resident DJ, picking much of the music that plays in the dining room. She also has Down syndrome, a fact that informs Shayna’s inclusive atmosphere. As it happens, Special Olympics games are held annually on URI campus, and North Kingstown is considered a welcoming community for folks with special needs. Two Shayna’s Place sandwiches are named after local advocates: “Dr. Sig” wrote a book about Down syndrome, and “Coach Lisa” is named after one of Shayna’s athletic trainers. “She was always kind of famous,” says Marjorie. “She just loves engaging with people.” Shayna’s has quickly become a pillar of the Wickford community; regulars drive from surrounding towns to enjoy breakfast and coffee, and one sandwich won mention from
USA Today for “Best Grinder in New England.” A second Shayna’s Place is already operating in Texas, and a new grab-and-go eatery, Alma, will soon open in Wickford. A similar success story is Tate’s Italian Kitchen, opened the same year and located a block away. Karen Bruno and Jack Mutell were successful restaurateurs in Long Island, but when they saw an ad for a defunct diner on Brown Street, they made the shocking decision to relocate their business to Wickford Village. The restaurant, with its rustic interior and 153-year-old shell, serves elegant Italian fare, and it’s drawn regular patrons (and dining critics) from across New England. “It’s actually the restaurants that are still the anchor,” says Kristin Urbach, executive director of the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. A South County native, she used to visit Wickford when she was a kid. After 30 years out-of-state, Kristin loves to see the town continue to flower, and she seems to have close relationships with every proprietor in town. “Wickford feels warm and inviting. The business owners really care about unifying their storefronts. People appreciate the history and beauty of Wickford, but they’re also keeping up with trends.” Downtown Wickford has always been a destination, and summer visitors are diverse. The streets are lined with boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, specialty shops, and places to eat. Some of these businesses have elaborate backstories: The clothier Green Ink has occupied four locations in Wickford since it first opened in 1972 and recently expanded with a second location in Providence’s Wayland Square. Green River Silver Co. first started in Providence, then opened a second store in Wickford about 18 years ago, and also has a third location in Bristol. Gardner’s Wharf has been selling fish and live lobster for seven decades. But new businesses are popping up as well. The Captain’s Table sells kitchenware, food products, and dessert truffles. Radiance Yoga, the village’s first dedicated yoga studio, just opened up last November. The bar and restaurant Wickford on the Water opened in March. And next, the town’s defunct library will be renovated as a theatre. Momentum, it seems, is building.
The Enchanted Village Throughout the year, Wickford hosts several community events, and visitors come from all over. During the winter holidays, the Festival of Lights illuminates the town. The spring equivalent is Harbor Lights, when the waters become a galaxy of floating lamps. The granddaddy of local culture is the Wickford Art Festival, which will celebrate its 57th year this month. For two days, more than 200 artists set up their stalls on Wickford’s streets, and they show their works to a tidal wave of regional art collectors. The first iteration, back in the early 1960s, was so successful that it helped launch the Wickford Art Association, which has been promoting local artists and leading workshops ever since. Diminutive as it may be, Wickford enchants travelers, whether they’re road-tripping to Newport or bicycling 1A to Narragansett. After all, not every village has its own “Rune Stone,” that mysterious rock etched with Norse-looking script. Nor does every village have a brick, fixed into the pavement of a municipal park, that reads, “Marry Me.” “I fell in love with the location,” says Kostas Karampetsos, owner of Tavern By The Sea. “I always wanted to have my own place, and I really liked the area.” Tavern By The Sea is unique in Wickford – at 13 years, the venue is neither brand-new nor especially old. Kostas grew up in Athens, Greece, and he attended Johnson & Wales. But Wickford was where he wanted to base his business. The restaurant specializes in wine and seafood, and its expansive decks overlook the water. Locals gather at the granite bar, and the host’s station is decorated with an authentic captain’s wheel. Kostas has seen businesses come and go, and he welcomes the new arrivals. “I have a great relationship with everyone,” he says. Then, with a satisfied smile, he adds: “It works.” Such a delicate balance is rare, among rural crossroads. Some grow too big, and quaint centers get lost in the sprawl. Others implode, turning into ghost towns. Wickford is that magic mix, persevering through the years, converting age-old buildings into attractive new venues. It’s beautiful, you think, passing through. But that’s not the half of it.
Housed in an historic building, Tavern By The Sea overlooks Wickford Harbor

I was shopping not too long ago, at that place with the big red bullseye logo, and I needed body wash. There was a line I hadn’t seen before. It was inexpensive, and smelled great. I bought it. And I liked it. But every time I used it, all I could think about was the chemicals inside. Mistrust of my beauty products is a feeling I can’t shake these days. If I’m willing to spend my Saturday morning at the farmer’s market to get the healthiest possible food, then why am I still willing to buy $2 body wash that was most
certainly made with toxic compounds? The thing is, there’s a lot of fake “clean” beauty out there – a lot of it available at that big box store I mentioned – that looks like it’s natural, and is still made with pesticides and known carcinogens. The other thing that makes cleaning up your beauty routine hard is that a lot of lines that really are natural aren’t so effective. That’s why I wanted to try Pure Haven. It’s a relatively new company that makes toxin-free products available online or

EXCEPTIONAL DENTISTRY IS A FAMILY AFFAIR Come and experience the latest and advanced techniques in a modern yet comfortable atmosphere via home party. They make everything from laundry detergent to household cleaners, but I was most interested in their beauty and body products – so I undertook a month-long trial period to see if coming clean made any difference in how my skin looked and felt. The short answer is: yes. I used Pure Haven’s entire regimen, from a face wash made with rose, pomegranate, and cucumber, to deodorant made with peppermint, coconut, and tea tree. There were some things I didn’t love – you’re never going to convince me I need to use toner, and it was tough getting used to the toothpaste, which tasted great (a combination of cinnamon, clove, and mint) but didn’t foam the way I want toothpaste to foam. But there was an incredible combination of moisturizers for morning and night that have made me a convert. In the morning, I used Pure Haven’s game-changing Hyaluronic Acid (a serum derived from Vitamin C), followed by Refresh Eye Cream, made with aloe and essential flower oils, and Refresh Moisturizer, with green tea. At night, I used Refresh Night Serum, a super-hydrating overnight product made with pink grapefruit and carrot oil. That was my favorite: I woke up looking like I had already cleansed and moisturized for the day. When you’re taking the time to be good to your skin, you’re going to look better regardless of what you’re putting on it. But I really did see a remarkable boost to my skin’s glow, and a significant reduction in breakouts. As often happens, making one positive choice led to other positive choices. Once I was into the groove of using clean beauty products, I started paying attention to my water intake and making sure to eat a colorful array of vegetables. My “clean beauty” glow came from the inside as well as the outside, and it feels so good that I’m definitely going to keep going with it.

A Charlestown home flourishes with a nature-inspired palette
Enter the sun-filled home of Tracy Stilwell and Sue Desillier and it’s apparent that these two share a creative life. Tracy, a textile and mixed media artist, and Sue, a physical therapist, have decorated spaces throughout their ranch-style abode with the kind of joyous riot of pattern and color found in nature. It makes perfect sense, the two are avid gardeners. Together for twenty-seven years, the couple originally lived in the Oakland Beach section of Warwick when word of a lot near Tracy’s sister’s house became available. “We were primarily trying to get closer to the beaches,” Sue explains. “We snagged the Charlestown lot and purchased a modular home. GET RHODY STYLE Tracy and Sue adore making Charlestown their home. Here’s where and how they add local flavor to their life:
SHOP LOCAL Says Sue, “We are part of a great plant community. We love the very small town feel of Cross Mills (Mills Creek Natural Market) and our little Charlestown main drag. The Mini Super, post office, library, community/senior center, The Bakery, Holy Cow, Simple Pleasures! There’s the Umbrella Factory gardens, Small Axe Cafe (so good!), and further out – Pasquale’s, Brickley’s, Farmer’s Daughter, and the Rose Shack.”
pigment abound. Bunting layers artwork, a mobile dangles in front of a window, even an intricate pendant lamp casts patterns that rival those from a disco ball. Walls are painted in a range of sherbet hues and serve as neutral backdrops for vibrant artwork and artifacts. Below, area rugs with geometric shapes cover brief sections of gleaming hardwood floors, but most window treatments are kept simple. “Our lack of curtains in the main living area allows us to see the gardens and let in the light,” says Sue. “We are constantly expanding, refining, adding features that reflect our passions and

interests, primarily in the garden,” begins Tracy. “We have a 50-pound bag of paint chips that gets pulled out when we start a new project. We collect as many colors as possible and start an elimination process until we are ready to go.” Sue notes that this research and development phase can take time, sometimes years, but once completed, they’re always pleased with the results. Case in point: a pair of shutters Sue recently constructed after a decade of discussion. Other endeavors have ranged in scale and include everything from small cement work to adding a patio. Adhering to a “do you love it?” rule, Tracy
and Sue only add those elements that they find visually appealing and interesting. Their take on Rhody Style means thinking independently. “We do what we want with color and materials. We are Flexible, we mix things up. Be creative, try things out,” says Sue. “And primarily [we] are filled with and express gratitude often.”

STATE PRIDE The pair has outfitted the guest room, which doubles as an Airbnb, in RI style with an old state dinner plate and “a great Rhode Island visual from a Southwest Airlines magazine.” When buying art, “support local artists!” says Sue.

OVER-THE-TOP DOG Gastros 401’s sausages and charcuterie are the bites you don’t want to miss this summer “Sometimes we go over the top, but mostly we like our products to be the focal point,” says co-owner of Gastros 401 Owen Doyle. “Over-the-top” is a near perfect descriptor for Owen and his business partner Travis Gervasio’s explosive sausage and charcuterie business. Scroll through the company’s Instagram (@gastros401) and you’ll find assembled boards that bring to mind images of Ancient Roman banquet tables: Gigantic blocks of gourmet cheese, mountains of thinly sliced cured meats, piles of plump grapes, broken nuts, and spills of different pickled vegetables for that bit of tang. Their sausages inspire the same air of gluttony: generously stuffed casings with gourmet filling combinations, carefully laid on a toasted bun and topped high with a plethora of condiments. Cue the Pavlovian salivation. Like many other culinary start-ups, both Owen and Travis began their business as a passion project on a whim. Says Owen, “We were roommates and always discussed owning our own business...It actually started out as a drunken conversation.” Soon after their discussion,
they began buying equipment for a hotdog cart. The pair would make hotdogs in their apartment kitchen, practicing recipes until they were just right. Eventually, Gastros 401 was selling their products faster than they could make them and the tag-team expanded to become the pop-up and catering force it is today. All of Gastros 401’s products are made from Heritage Berkshire pork and 7x Wagyu beef. Owen laments that the company would love to use locally sourced meats, but unfortunately, the farms here in Rhode Island cannot keep up with production. However, they do use local farms for their produce and other products at catering events. If you’re overwhelmed by what to order at Travis and Owen’s pop-up, start with their most popular creation: The Bacon Cheddar Wurst. This is a beef and pork sausage stuffed with cheese and bacon topped with braised onions. Then go back for some Spicy Chorizo, or their Famous Dog. For information about Gastros 401’s popup schedule, follow them on Instagram, for catering inquiries, email them at Gastros401@gmail.com, Gastros401.com. -Lauren Vella

A Plate With A View
Wickford Scramble Bowl
Growing up in North Kingstown, I spent many days wandering the streets of Wickford. My parents and grandparents took me there to feed the ducks and grab some fresh fish or meat at Ryan’s Market. In high school, we often stopped in for a deli sandwich or a greasy cheeseburger at the Harborside where my best friend’s boyfriend worked. The former deli has now been transformed into a new restaurant called Wickford on the Water. Boasting water views and new menu, Wickford on the Water was one place I had to check out. Wickford on the Water is located at 83 Brown Street. The newly renovated restaurant is spacious with a nice bar for relaxing and enjoying a cocktail. The real draw, however, is the deck overlooking Wickford Harbor. On the clear, day we were there, my friend and I enjoyed the cool breeze off of the water and the comfortable, well-shaded dining area. We were lucky enough to get a table right on the edge of the deck where we could see fish swimming below. Wickford on the Water has an extensive cocktail list with drinks perfectly designed to
complement the al fresco atmosphere. The family at the table next to us was thrilled with their cocktail selections, including a Hawaiian Sangria (blue like the ocean water) and a Blueberry Pomegranate Spritzer. My friend and I were more excited to find all of the draft beer selections were from local breweries, so we had beer. We sampled Westerly’s finest Grey Sail Captain’s Daughter (DIPA) and Pour Judgment (IPA), both served in frosty pint glasses to keep the brew cold on a warm day. The appetizer selections featured usual waterside delicacies like chowder (classic New England or Rhode Island), clam cakes, steamers, calamari, mussels, and shrimp cocktail. For landlubbers, they also had chicken fingers, caprese salad, mozzarella sticks, and loaded tater tots. We split an order of the half dozen clam cakes. They were cooked well with a crispy exterior and a nice doughy interior, and they had several clams in each. We both commented that they were well-seasoned and didn’t need any extra salt. The lunch and dinner menu are one in the same, which isn’t a bad thing. There are a dozen
Wickford Waterfront Salad with Lobster Salad
or so sandwiches, including two types of lobster rolls. The entrées run the gamut from shrimp scampi to grilled salmon to lobster mac ‘n’ cheese and more. My friend ordered the New England Style Lobster Roll which means the lobster meat was cold and mixed with a dollop of mayonnaise, seasoned and it was served on a grilled brioche bun. It was accompanied by lightly seasoned Old Bay French Fries, so for $20, it was a good value, and my friend thought they were tasty. The Connecticut Lobster Roll was another choice, with the lobster meat served warm with melted butter. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Tacos and was rewarded with three large flour tortillas stuffed with the almost-raw, delicate fish. The tuna was fresh, encrusted in sesame seeds and seared to a perfect rare. The tuna was topped with a cabbage and carrot coleslaw with cucumber wasabi dressing, a drizzle of teriyaki sauce, and avocado. It was a lot of slaw and almost overwhelmed the tuna, and I wish it had come

Most of us have never heard the phrase allyou-can-eat lobster. If we ever see unlimited oysters glistening in a bed of ice, it because we’re at an upscale wedding. Alaskan crab is something we’ve read about but never tried. Yet at The Nordic, you can eat as much of these items as you want. You can gorge yourself in the dining room, surrounded by hunting trophies and Viking paraphernalia, or you can nurse a cocktail in an Adirondack chair and watch the alpacas graze in a nearby meadow. Tucked deep into rural Charlestown, The Nordic is already far from any gas station or major road, and it feels like a completely different world. “There’s a lot of wow factor,” says Steve
Persson, co-owner of the family establishment. “When people pull in, as soon as they crest the last hilltop, they’re seeing ponds with fountains, they’re seeing fires, grills, stone monuments, oversized flowers, crazy animals out in the paddock – there’s a lot of stuff going on here. It’s more of an event.” Yet, the Persson family didn’t plan to create such an opulent buffet. Years ago, Dick and Gudny Persson were living in Brooklyn, New York, when they discovered a woodsy parcel in Rhode Island. Both Perssons had spent formative years in Scandinavia, and they yearned to open a summer camp in a sylvan setting. The business struggled, transforming into a small restaurant, then a kind of tavern.

“
Families have turned to me for all of their Real Estate needs for almost 30 years.
“
In 1980, a nearby buffet called Custy’s burned down. The Perssons adopted that business model, with some early help from former Custy’s staff. They built an expensive addition, gambling heavily on the new concept. Scandinavian influence is everywhere, including model drakkars and a carved wooden Norsemen out front, but they replaced an authentic smorgasbord with Ocean State favorites, and it caught on. “The buffet was the first thing that ever showed any promise at all,” recalls Steve, one of Dick and Gudny’s three children. “We paved the roads. We built addition after addition. It started with lower-end food at a cheaper price. But it didn’t take us long to come to the idea that high quality at a higher price was in demand. And we stuck with it, and now, 40 years later, here we are.” Today, Steve operates the restaurant with his two sisters, Nancy Persson and Lisa Brown, along with eight of their ten grandchildren. To stock so many stations of littlenecks and fillet mignon, the Perssons rely heavily on a far-reaching network of loyal suppliers, along with local growers and fishermen. The 90-person staff is thoroughly trained in hospitality; some workers have been here 30-plus years, but Steve takes particular pride in grooming young servers. “Adults these days are not used to seeing young people with a legitimate, bright smile,” he says. “But we have that here.” After four decades, Steve’s generation is starting to prepare for succession. None of the Persson children were forced to stay, but most of the grandchildren have become involved in the Nordic’s operation. “They’re big shoes to fill,” says Pelle Persson, one of the grandsons. “Growing up here, it’s a little different. We’ve been surrounded by it since we were little kids. It’s definitely a lifestyle.”

What’s Ale-ing You? 84 Aleworks’ owner Chris Champagne finally scratches his brewing itch
Photo (left) courtesy of 84 Aleworks, photo (right) courtesy of Saugys
It’s no secret that the craft beer market has taken off in the past few years. Big names like Dogfish Head IPA, Sierra Nevada, and Ballast Point used to be some of the only players in the game. Now the craft craze has spread like wildfire, producing beers that are hyper-local and uniquely flavored. It’s no surprise then that owner Chris Champagne at 84 Aleworks in Westerly decided to hop on the craft brew bandwagon. The tavern recently added a brewery, an undertaking that has always been a dream of his. Chris started out as a home brewer, and as his passion grew, so did his desire to produce beer on a much larger scale. Unfortunately, his restaurant at the time didn’t have enough space.“I started home brewing 16 years ago. About eight years ago, I picked it up again when we had the restaurant on High Street... There was not enough room to brew there but the thought had crossed my mind.” However, when 84 Ale works moved into its current building, Chris decided that there was enough room to make his hoppy dream a reality.
Let’s Be Frank The Saugy hot dog is a point of pride for many Rhode Islanders. Its rich and distinct taste, formerly only available in the Ocean State, gives many an excuse to brag about our little home. This year, the beloved summertime favorite turns 150. Augustus and Alphonse Saugy – German immigrants who came to Rhode Island through Ellis Island – introduced their hot dog to a state that looked very different than it does today. The two would deliver their products from the production house on Canal Street by way of horse and buggy going door-to-door to sell the franks in white cardboard boxes with black lettering. The Saugy is Rhode Island’s first hot dog, but it’s also one of our best kept secrets. Few people outside of the state are familiar with the product. To many, it’s so irreplaceable, so
84 Ale Works currently serves locally and regionally brewed beers on tap in addition to its own malted concoctions. Chris says its most popular housemade brews are their Aleworks Pale Ale and the Betty Blonde Ale. The pale ale contains citrus notes with a “nice, malty sweetness,” while the blonde ale is lighter in color (hence the “blonde”), that drinks similarly to a pilsner. The owner notes that part of what is so exciting about adding a brewery is injecting their own creativity into each batch to make items that will compliment their fare. Says Chris, “Brewing our own beer allows us to make beers that reflect upon our tastes and we can have some fun with different ingredients. We have always offered specials in addition to our menu, now we get to make some beer specials as well.” Currently, the tavern does not can their products or offer growlers for off-premise consumption. But, Chris has intimated that once his system is able to handle larger batches, this might be a feature that becomes available. Westerly, 84Aleworks.com. -Lauren Vella
quintessential, that nostalgic former Rhode Islanders often order them to bring back to their home. The current owner, Mary O’Brien, says she frequently ships five or 10 pounds of Saugys overnight to customers across the country. It is certainly not easy keeping a business afloat for 150 years, but smart leadership, modern technology, and most importantly, the loyalty of Rhode Islanders preserve this iconic food item. Over the years, the company has overseen the adoption of modern manufacturing technology, transitioning from a sawdust smoking process to a liquid smoke. Saugy Inc. recently introduced a skinless recipe alongside the classic natural casing recipe, which provides that distinctive “snap” when you bite into it, similar to a sausage. Some locals recoil at the idea of eating a skinless. As Mary says, “Rhode islanders are very loyal to their brand.” The original Saugy still reigns supreme. Saugys.com -Isabella DeLeo
