OLDIES BUT GOODIES Wakefield’s Art-O-Mat turns cigarette machines into a healthy habit Rhode Island’s only Art-O-Mat has popped up at The Purple Cow in Wakefield. This vintage cigarette-machine-turned-art-dispenser is one of over 100 located around the world, and lets users purchase one-of-a-kind art at a nominal price. The original Art-O-Mat was created for a solo show by North Carolina artist Clark Whittington. It was such an instant hit that Clark expanded the concept into an ongoing art installation and collaboration, offering easy access to original works by over 300 artists. Collectively the machines dispense about 90,000 pieces of art each year. Each machine has a “sponsor” who decides its path; Rhode Island’s is local glass and jewelry artist Luisa DeLuca. Originally located in her

own shop in 2006, the Art-O-Mat spent some time north of “the Tower” at Myopic Books in Providence and then returned “home” and relocated to Painted Karma in Wakefield. According to The Purple Cow owner Melinda Witham, the reaction to it has been amazing. “Who wouldn’t want it? It’s so cool,” she says. “I love hearing the old-fashioned clunk-clunk noise when the lever is pulled.” Now, instead of dispensing smokes, these machines are feeding a much healthier habit: art collecting. To learn more about the project visit ArtOMat.org. Find Luisa DeLuca’s work at ArtistsFusion.com. Wakefield, ThePurpleCowCo.net -Marylou Butler

A finished sign sitting at home in a place of honor

Hammer Away Hammer & Stain is not your typical art studio. Sure, you’ll find painted signs displayed on the walls, sets of black aprons at the ready, and shelves full of paint and brushes – right alongside a pegboard full of tools and stacks of raw wood. “It is more than just a paint night,” says owner AJ Bothun, who opened the Wickford space in April. AJ decided to start the workshop after taking a similar class and loving it, then reaching out to the Hammer & Stain founder about starting her own studio. She took a leap of faith, leaving her job at URI to enter the burgeoning guided-DIY scene as a

small business owner. A class at Hammer & Stain works like this. Beforehand, you pick your design, which includes the unfinished piece of wood and a stencil cut by AJ herself. It’s a pretty simple process, but requires a bit of elbow grease: sanding, staining, stenciling. You’ll be learning how to use electric sanders and nail guns. You’ll get to experiment with mixing stains and deciding which paint will go best – with guidance from AJ if desired, of course. In fact, we tried this one-of-a-kind craft night ourselves, and can attest you’ll emerge sawdust-covered but smiling, with

a truly handmade piece of art for your wall that you constructed yourself. “You actually learn about technique, style, knowledge of wood, and some small building techniques,” AJ elaborates. Beyond just the signs that are most popular at the studio, they also offer projects that incorporate metal, canvas, succulents, and a broad range of styles from modern and industrial to farmhouse and shabby chic. “Really, if we can build it, we will do it,” AJ proclaims. “We live and work in sawdust – and love it!” Wickford, HammerAndStainWickford.com -Megan Schmit

The Mavericks

Labor Day Weekend in Southern Rhode Island means two things – Rhythm and Roots! The renowned R&R Festival (August 30-September 1) returns to Charlestown’s Ninigret Park with some of the best in American roots music, which finds its origins in folk, blues, and country. The Festival, now in its 22nd year, is produced locally (a rarity in the music business)

by South County resident Chuck Wentworth. R&R is known for its down-to-earth, family-friendly atmosphere, and Chuck explains that he enjoys “producing an event that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the country to celebrate a weekend of music, dancing, and joyful community.” Indeed, that happens on four busy stages all weekend long.

Photo courtesy of Rhythm & Roots

Ray Castaldi

Main Stage a.k.a the Rhythm Stage Headliners cover a range of music from traditional blues to Americana. Main Stage performers this year include alt-country band Son Volt, Smithfield native and Nashville recording artist Sarah Potenza, the Tex-Mex inspired Mavericks, and blues piano great Marcia Ball. Dance Stage The dance stage is the destination for many attendees, attracting dancers from over 38 states and Canada. The emphasis is on Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music, and featured bands include BeauSoleil, Los Texmanics, and Hot Club of Cowtown. Don’t miss the “locals,” Westerly’s Knickerbocker All-Stars, whose latest album has been nominated for a Blues Music Award.

Roots Stage The festival remains true to its origins with musicians who keep the roots alive. Rhode Island native Johnny Nicholas, a bluesman who’s spent most of his life in Texas, joins traditional Cajun fiddler David Greely as “Artists in Residence” all weekend. Main stage acts like Della Mae and SNL veteran Christine Ohlman often visit the Roots Stage for sets of strippeddown tunes. Family Stage Children of all ages will stay busy with activities including kid’s musicians, storytellers, and movies under the stars. In addition to the dedicated kid’s tent, the Cajun Academy is a free youth music camp that offers lessons on traditional instruments like accordion and mandolin. The camp is open to local families, including those not attending the festival. Parking is free and easy on the decommissioned Navy airstrip. Camping fills up each year, and “glamping” options are available. For further details, check RhythmAndRoots.com. Charlestown -Ken Abrams

It’s a beautiful Saturday morning and you’re sailing up the bay. Jamestown is on your port side, Newport to starboard, and the Claiborne Pell Bridge looms ahead. You’re tracking the other boats on the water, but then you do a double-take toward the Jamestown shore. You see a boat, if you can call it that, made from plastic storage boxes – the kind you keep in your basement – connected by two-by-fours with giant plastic flowers for sails. Right behind it are three young women barely staying afloat on an enormous plastic bag filled with exercise stability balls and a clear plastic tarp for a sail. Welcome to the Jamestown Yacht Club’s annual Fools’ Rules Regatta. This year’s event, scheduled for August 10 on

the Town Beach, East Ferry, will be the 42nd race. The regatta typically draws 25 to 35 entries, mostly from New England, but sailors from California, New York, and Pennsylvania have also participated says Greg Hunter, who became the race’s Chief Fool in 2018. Greg started as a spectator in the late 1980s and began participating with his brothers. Since then, he has been involved in the building, sailing, and sinking of multiple vessels with his children, other family members, and friends. This obviously isn’t your typical regatta. Each craft must be made from non-marine items only, and participants get two hours before the race to assemble their boat on the beach. Those rules lead to some hilarious and clever

design innovations. Greg has seen a double-decker boat with a loveseat stacked over a sofa – a design that finished first in its class, he adds. Other noteworthy efforts have included a 25-foot catamaran that used cardboard construction tubes, balloons, and netting for a sail; another was made from water bottles. Racers compete for prizes based on crew size, with special awards for best and worst designs, including The Karl Smith Most Ingenious Design and The Worst Example of Naval Architecture. Anyone can enter the race provided they bring a life jacket, an anchor for their boats, and a willingness to be foolish. Entry forms and rules are available at JYC.

Lorén is an activist, author, and Indigenous artist

Wise Woman “We’re one of those kinds of people who just do,” says Lorén Spears, director of the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter. “Do, do, do, do, do!” Lorén is describing Narragansett people in general, but she could as easily be talking about herself: animated, fast-talking, and drenched in historical knowledge, Lorén can tell you almost anything about Native American culture in Rhode Island. It’s easy to imagine her as an elementary school teacher, engaging young pupils for hours at a time. But despite many happy years in Newport’s public school system, Lorén was critical of how Native American history and culture were taught, and she disliked how her own three kids were being groomed for the world. “I love kids,” she says. “I love seeing kids succeed. I didn’t leave [public education] because I didn’t love teaching. I left because I have children, and I was seeing my children

falling into the same stereotypes regarding education. There are institutional structures that are set up to help our children fail.” Lorén’s grandparents, Ferris and Eleanor Dove, owned the renowned Dovecrest Restaurant. The Doves were acquainted with the Tomaquag Museum – which turned 61 this year – and when the museum was forced to leave its original location, the couple made room in their business. Later, Lorén’s mother became volunteer director. In 2002, Lorén opened a school called Nuweetooun, which means “our place” in the Narragansett language. There are about 3,000 people in the state who identify as Narragansett, and 10,000 Rhode Islanders who identify as Native American. For several years, Nuweetooun helped educate children from an Indigenous perspective. Rhode Island “detribalized” the Narragansett for a century, and descendants have

fought hard to maintain their culture. Lorén cites certain trailblazers, like folklorist Princess Red Wing and acclaimed athlete Ellison “Tarzan” Brown, as vital to maintaining Narragansett identity. When heavy flooding ruined the Nuweetooun building, Lorén became full-time director of the museum, spearheaded the Indigenous Empowerment Network, and turned volunteer roles into salaried positions. The Tomaquag calendar is now robust with activity, and the museum staff is raising funds for a sizable new facility, which will be based much closer to the University of Rhode Island, a major partner. “When you’re empowering indigenous people, part of that is getting the truth out,” says Lorén. “It’s having people understand that we don’t look like the stereotype. We never did, and never will.” Exeter, TomaquagMuseum.org -Robert Isenberg

Round and Round We Go With six historic merry-go-rounds still in operation, Rhode Island preserves a timeless pleasure

Photo courtesy of Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau

Carousel Village in Providence

Charles Looff immigrated to the United States in 1870, and he spent decades building roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and carousels. He was a master carver and crafted each horse by hand. Only around 50 such carousels were ever constructed, and two of them are still running in Rhode Island. Like rock-skipping and stargazing, carousels have entertained whole generations, and they never get old, no matter how many tokens you buy. We’re lucky to have preserved so many vintage carousels in the Ocean State. Every time you give that mare a whirl, just imagine how many thousands of people have saddled up before you. Here’s where you can rustle them up. Carousel Village One of the gems of Roger Williams Park, Carousel Village is the perfect bookend for a zoo visit. Not only is the carousel a delight, but kids can also run around the playground, stroll in the nearby Japanese Garden, or ride a pony. There’s even a miniature bouncehouse. Roger Williams Park, Providence. RWPZoo.org/Carousel-Village

Easton’s Beach Carousel Easton’s Beach is one of Newport’s most low-maintenance hang-outs: Beach-combing is free, there’s a great snack bar, and the Save the Bay Exploration Center. Finally, there’s the carousel, which started operating in the 1950s and even survived a hurricane. Ride to the rhythm of Disney standards. Easton’s Beach, Newport. Facebook: Easton’s Beach Atlantic Beach Carousel Built by Herschell Spillman in 1915, the Atlantic Beach Carousel is nestled in the middle of the action: Rides, games, and an arcade make Misquamicut a favorite summer haunt, but the age-old carousel is its century-old anchor. Atlantic Beach, Westerly. AtlanticBeachPark.com Crescent Park Carousel Crescent Park draws thousands of visitors to Riverside each summer. The lawns and paths offer a gorgeous view of the Providence River, and you can stock up on fried seafood at Blount’s Clam Shack. Then

there’s the local Looff Carousel, a historic landmark from 1895 boasting 61 horses, one camel, and chances to reach for the brass ring! Crescent Park, Riverside. CrescentParkCarousel.org Slater Park Looff Carousel Galloping horses, a giraffe and lion, and even three dogs. This Looff carousel was originally built for a carnival in upstate New York, but it was relocated to Slater Park in 1910. The carousel is undergoing renovations this year, but it should be open by August. Slater Park, Pawtucket. Facebook: Looff Carousel at Slater Park Flying Horse Carousel Why is it called “Flying Horse”? Because the horse sculptures are actually suspended from chains instead of stuck on the traditional poles. A rare breed of carousel, this Watch Hill staple is the oldest example in the country. The site dates back to 1879, when the carousel was rotated by an actual horse. Watch Hill, Westerly. -Robert Isenberg

When you step through the doors of Arous Studio, you are walking into owner Arous Parker’s vision-turned-reality. Arous has been busy channeling her energy and passion into rebuilding her business after a fire destroyed her previous studio exactly two years ago. In this new space, she has designed a spa-like experience where patrons are catered to and inspired within the open studio where stylists are busy at work. A bigger space meant bigger opportunities, and Arous had a very specific goal in mind: a completely one-of-a-kind hair experience. Her technique? Dry cutting. “Dry cutting is different in that the stylist is trained to follow the natural contours of your hair, so each cut is literally unique to

each client,” Arous explains. “The hair grows out more naturally, and is easier to style at home.” Such a technique cannot be mastered overnight. The John Sahag Dry Cut technique was introduced to her 20 years ago by a friend in New York City, where Arous attended the workshop and never looked back on her cutting-while-wet ways. Through all of life’s hardships, and every studio space, Arous’ value of her clients has always remained true: “As soon as someone sits in my chair, I make my world about them.” That exact notion is carried throughout Arous Studio as soon as you arrive. Compared to the previous space, the new one

gives Arous the space to host seminars, trainings, and pop-up community events. It boasts 3,000 square feet and 14 chairs, plus a refreshment bar with coffee and homemade baklava. “I want to serve people what I would serve in my own home” Arous says, gesturing to the state-of-the-art espresso machines in the backroom. What’s in store for Arous Studio? Arous will continue to host the Dry Cut Academy, a series of professional classes where she will mentor others on the atypical method. Later this summer, she will also be offering a new series of pop-up dry cutting workshops in spaces around Providence. For more information on Arous Studio, visit ArousStudio.com. -Ava Callery

UNDER THE SEA

Rhode Island scuba diving may be cold and cloudy, but there’s a lot to see down there

By Robert Isenberg “If you dive in New England, you can dive anywhere,” says David Labrecque, owner of the East Bay Dive Center in Warren. David should know: He first tried scuba diving in 1977, and he became a certified instructor six years later. David has explored many ocean floors, but his favorite is his native Rhode Island. “It’s what you make of it. If you really look closely, you can see a lot of small stuff going on. You look at a rocky area, you’ll see crabs, juvenile fish, lobsters....” Scuba snobs often badmouth North Atlantic waters, especially if they’ve swam in the crystal-clear Caribbean. But as cloudy as it can be, Rhody shores are littered with wonders. “I always liked history – looking for artifacts, wreck-diving, that kind of stuff,” says David, who grew up fishing and snorkeling. “There are hundreds and hundreds of shipwrecks in Rhode Island. A lot of people don’t realize that.” East Bay is one of several diving companies in the state (see sidebar), and almost anyone can learn scuba (or SCUBA, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) and get an Open Water certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Lessons typically start in swimming pools, as divers learn basic maneuvering and emergency procedures. From there, they brave the salty sea. Places like Fort Adams boast gentle tides and surprising visibility. David used to work for the Gob Shop, the custom apparel store located next door. In the mid-1980s, owner Robert Estrella offered David the unused storefront for his diving business. Today, David’s team trains 70-80 divers a year. The shop has glass cases full of mementos – bottles, pipes, sea glass – which have been retrieved from the depths. New England divers may need insulated wetsuits and well-wiped masks, but it’s worth the effort to explore such seabeds. “We also do night dives,” he adds. “It’s a whole different world at night.”

ALL THAT JAZZ Newport’s famed music festival returns with an eclectic lineup that defies traditional definitions of jazz

By Ken Abrams

The Grand Daddy of all music festivals, Newport Jazz, returns to Fort Adams State Park this summer with a stellar lineup over the weekend of August 2-4. The story begins in 1954, when Producer George Wein was hired by Newport socialites Elaine and Louis Lorillard to put on a summer festival in what was then a sleepy summer retreat for the rich and famous. Today, it’s a model for the music industry and a destination for jazz fans worldwide. Whether you’re an aficionado or entrant into the world of jazz, the Festival is a great way to experience an original American art form at an event steeped in music lore. Traditional jazz artists are well represented, but the Festival is also known to feature exciting young talent, including many who cross over into other musical genres. In fact, the 2019 lineup might leave you wondering, “This is jazz?” (The answer: absolutely!) Here’s what to expect if you plan on attending:

JAZZ LEGENDS

CROSSOVER ARTISTS

Headliner Herbie Hancock is a genre superstar who earned his chops playing with Miles Davis. The veteran keyboardist has been in the business for over 50 years fronting his own bands, both acoustic and electric. Other big names to look for include the Ron Carter Trio, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and saxophone upstart Kamasi Washington, who recently recorded with Kendrick Lamar and Chaka Khan.

The zenith of the 2019 Festival may very well be Tank and the Bangas, a breakout act at last year’s Folk Festival. The New Orleans band is pure energy on stage, blending jazz, folk, hip-hop, spoken word, and more. Other artists who don’t fall into the traditional jazz classification include Common, who emerged out of hip-hop but crosses all boundaries, and Grammy winner Thundercat, who recently recorded with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald.

WOMEN OF JAZZ A model of diversity and inclusion, women musicians comprise nearly half of all Festival performers. Highlights include event veteran Dianne Reeves and Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae. Don’t forget to check out Women of the World, an eclectic a Capella ensemble with members from Japan, Italy, India, Canada, and Haiti.

THE EVENING CONCERT For a more upscale experience, head to the evening concert at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Friday August 2, led this year by Jon Batiste, late show bandleader and Festival favorite. The show is billed as “Jon Batiste and Friends,” so expect some surprises.

FESTIVAL SECRETS Those in-the-know head to the Friday show. The lineup is especially strong and the crowds lighter. All that changes over the weekend. To really be part of the scene, our advice is to leave early and plan accordingly. Chill and enjoy the good vibes. Finally, although it’s tempting to relax in the summer sun at the Fort Stage, be sure to walk around the grounds and catch acts at all four stages. SORhodeIsland.com • August 2019

South County at a glance: Beaches. Small towns. Food. Folks around here love to eat. We like pizza and barbecue. We want burgers and tacos, pasta and salad, and we want them well-made. If it swims in the ocean, we want it fresh; if it comes in a shell, we’ll slurp it raw. South County is a land of farmers and fishermen – with cutting-edge local restaurants in-between – and there are infinite ways to treat your tastebuds. Indeed, new eateries are always popping up, and we sometimes struggle to keep track of their names and shticks. As summer hits its zenith, consider a visit to any of these fine new establishments. Some have replaced older haunts; others have switched addresses; and a few have emerged out of nowhere, surprising locals with their bold new menus. Photography by Brandon Harmon

Angel’s Kitchen

Bapsang

Bombay Flame

John Martin had already made a name for himself with Johnny Angel’s Clam Shack in Charlestown, where beachy snacks aren’t just deep-fried and thrown in a basket, but artfully assembled. Angel’s Kitchen takes that tasteful presentation even farther, with its dateready restaurant in a Cape Cod-style building. Here you’ll find masterful seafood and pasta dishes, plus a cozy atmosphere just a block from the Jamestown waterfront and Newport ferry. Jamestown, Facebook: Angel’s Kitchen Jamestown

Bapsang is your one-stop-shop for Korean classics, such as Kimchi Ramen, Barbecue Beef, and Grilled Eel. True to its rich culinary culture, East Greenwich has one of the few authentic Korean restaurants in the state, showcasing the creations of 24-year veteran Andrew Park. “Bapsang” is an upbeat Korean word for “table setting,” and it makes a lot of sense: Every dish is precisely presented, even the noodle bowls, and you won’t find a single boiled egg or drizzle of sauce out of place. Aficionados will especially appreciate Bapsang, but rookies can learn Korean cooking from the best. East Greenwich, BapsangRI.com

There isn’t a wealth of Indian cuisine in South County, so any old tandoor would probably suffice. But luckily, Bombay Flame is a really nice restaurant, and aside from the usual curries and daals, you’ll find such delicacies as Lamb Pepper Fry, Palak Kofta dumplings, and the Flame Meat Sampler. The lunch buffet is perfect for newbies, so you can figure out what you like; and if you don’t have time for the full spread, you can walk out with a “lunch box” for less than $10. Wakefield, BombayWakefield.com

Calaveras

Cantina del Rio

Gino’s by the Beach

What started as an authentic Mexican restaurant on Block Island soon became a tiny satellite place in Peace Dale. Not long after, the second Calaveras moved into a picturesque waterfront building in Narragansett, where multi-colored picnic tables and shrimp burritos await the hungry beachgoer. Julio Mendoza grew up in Mexico City, and he co-owns the place with his wife Iliana. The name means “skull,” a cheeky reference to Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Regulars may also catch occasional live music. Narragansett, HelloCalaveras.com

Everything’s bigger at Cantina del Rio: The dining room is vast, the ovular bar can serve two dozen patrons, and the Cadillac Margarita is, truly, the Cadillac of margaritas. The menu includes some Mexican favorites, like the spicy “Michelada” beer-cocktail and the chocolate-y Mole Burrito, and the portions could stuff even the hungriest campesino. The kitchen also accommodates takeout and catering. A couple of businesses have occupied the same roadside restaurant in the past year, but hopefully Cantina del Rio is here to stay. Warwick, CantinaDelRioMexRI.com

True to its name, Gino’s is located near Misquamicut Beach. The place is almost always open, and the kitchen serves both a hearty breakfast (omelettes, pancakes, Belgian waffles) and equally hearty dinners (pork chops, lobster, fish and chips). Whether you’re fueling up for a swim or just returning from the waves, Gino’s is a family-friendly destination that will feed you well. Bonus: Steven Polumbo sings Sinatra every Friday night. Huck’s Filling Station

Micky’s Pizza

Phoenix Dining & Entertainment

Named after the impish Mark Twain character, Huck’s opens this month, and it promises a worldly menu with locally sourced ingredients. If that sounds vague, Huck’s is part of a new restaurant group, Dig In Dining, which includes Milk Money in Providence and Pink Pig in Jamestown, which set a high standard. Why a “filling station,” you ask? Because this trailblazing kitchen is based in a former service station, just over the Warwick line. Find out what’s cooking at Huck’s when the restaurant finally opens its industrial-sized garage doors. Warwick, HucksFillingStation.com

Wickford is a great place to walk around. You can browse the antique shops and art galleries, crossing the whole village in 15 minutes. But if it’s warm out, you might consider taking your stroll with a foldable slice of White Pizza in your hands. Micky’s is situated in the exact center of town, so it’s equidistant to anywhere you’d want to be. You can also find other pizzeria standbys, including Garlic Knots and whole New York-style pizzas in a range of styles and toppings. Wickford, Facebook: Micky’s Pizza

The new Phoenix is geared toward evening fun: The calendar is already packed with bands, tribute bands, line dancing, and karaoke. Combine your entertainment with dinner at the Phoenix restaurant, where you can enjoy such platters as Lobster Ravioli and “Phish & Chips.” Phoenix is technically in our neighboring state, and its lineup favors Connecticut talent. But if you’re anywhere near Westerly, it is just across the river. Pawcatuck, PhoenixDAndE.com

Rachel’s Cafe

Tavern on Main

The Revival Craft Kitchen & Bar

The logo for Rachel’s Cafe shows palm fronds, which may surprise visitors to Rhode Island, even in the summer. But Rachel’s maintains a tropical cheerfulness, thanks to a lime-green color scheme and sunlit tables. The cafe specializes in breakfast and brunch; here, the omelettes are well stuffed, the pancakes are thick, and you’ll find happy surprises, like the Breakfast Tostada. Rachel’s stands just down the road from historic Wakefield Village, making it a great stop on the way to town or in

The original Tavern on Main in Wakefield has one of the sweetest stories in South County history: Years ago, Christian D’Agostino landed a job at an Italian restaurant in Wakefield. After a decorated career as a chef in North Dakota, he returned to Rhode Island and opened Tavern on Main – in the same building. The second location, in East Greenwich, can’t claim the same sentimental origins, but it serves equally delicious comfort food, craft beers, and cocktails. Whether you crave Scotch Eggs or a Scallops Roll, you’ll walk away happy, and you

Until now, anyone living in East Greenwich would have to drive around half of Narragansett Bay (about 26 miles) for a forkful of Revival’s Eggplant Involtini or Pan-Roasted Monkfish. Frankly, even the foodiest foodie in EG may never have heard of The Revival, despite its local fame in Warren. Well, all that has changed: The Revival opened a second location on Main Street, and now South County diners can try the same Carbonara Pizza and flights of rye whiskey that all the East Bayers have been

the middle of a statewide road trip. South Kingstown, Facebook: Rachel’s Cafe

raving about. East Greenwich, Facebook: The Revival East Greenwich

The Thirsty Gull

241 Main

“Pub food” means different things to different people, but you’re likely to find any kind of pub food you want – and of very high quality – at The Thirsty Gull. Chef Joey Madeiros has been cooking for 25 years, and the diversity of his menu spans the globe: Ahi Bahn Mi, Fig & Prosciutto Flatbread, Thai Chili Mussels, and the Nashville Chicken & Waffle all await the cosmopolitan visitor. Pretty much all ingredients are sourced from New England suppliers, and then there’s the beer and wine menu, which is equally eclectic. So yes, you may like your pub food casual with a lot of hot sauce, but this place still ups the ante. Westerly, ThirstyGullNE.com

Do you bleed blue and white? Do you make monthly trips to the Green Monster? Do you take your Celtics games with a side of build-your-own-burger? If so, 241 Main is probably your kind of sports bar, where the IPAs flow and the chicken sandwiches are deep-fried in buttermilk. Brought to you by the same owners as Kai Bar, 241 Main also offers an impressive range of salads and vegetarian fare, and happy hour includes two hours of half-priced food. East Greenwich, 241Main.com

Wickford on the Water You can’t beat the location: Wickford on the Water is smack dab in the middle of Wickford, and it overlooks that iconic harbor. You can see the small bridge from your table, especially if you sit on the waterfront deck. The mussels, lobster rolls, and decadent breakfasts are the perfect bookend to a stroll through the village, and you can even spend a full evening here, thanks to the well-stocked bar. Newly remodeled and under new ownership, this venue is worth a drive. Wickford, WickfordOnTheWater.com

Aqua Allure Sure, the official Rhode Island state mineral is Bowenite, but there’s something about beach glass that truly represents the Ocean State vibe. While not as easy to stumble upon as it once was, sea or beach glass might just be that singular instance where something once carelessly discarded has transformed into a thing of beauty. Also known as “mermaid’s tears”, most authentic pieces started humbly as trash: bottles and jars – shattered, pitted, grinded, and tumbled smooth over time by water and sand – resulting in perfectly imperfect shapes. The most common shades are muted aquas, blues, and mints, and today, bags of manufactured versions are available to purchase for crafts and decorating. But whether prospected along the shoreline or bought in bulk, these jagged gems offer a tangible slice of summer that lasts all year long. It is no wonder that artisans around South County are inspired to showcase these coastal treasures in their work.

There are lots of things to love about the FLO De-Stressing Unit. You get to lie down. The lights are dimmed, and a light blanket is pulled over you. Music starts playing through overhead speakers – the kind of airy, ambient tones you might hear in a yoga studio. You don’t have to “do” anything; some clients even fall asleep. The point is to relax. So why drive to the FLO De-Stressing Center, LLC, in rural Wakefield? Why shouldn’t you just crank up some “Pure Moods” and do some deep breathing in the comfort of your own home? “We’re using frequencies of music and specific geometries to create a harmonious and coherent environment,” says Ross Newkirk, who co-owns FLO with his wife Heather. “When someone is in that environment, they start to release and let go of things – and de-stress.” Ross has spent 13 years developing different technologies, such as the FLO De-Stressing Unit, with his father, a veteran manufacturer of reinforced ceramics. The FLO unit looks kind of like a wooden daybed, except for the

copper bars and hexagonal box that hover above the mattress. These components are part of what creates an “information field,” which helps put the mind and body at ease. If that explanation is a little hard to follow, try this: Most music is played at a frequency of 440 hertz. The Newkirks have adapted each audio track to 432 hertz, which they describe as more harmonious. The wavelengths have different “geometries.” The effects of 432 hertz on the ear – and everything else – are reportedly different, and the Newkirks describe a range of therapeutic results. “Sometimes people cry and release emotions,” says Ross. “Sometimes they’re at ease and laugh. But it’s always something good. When you’re in that field, anything that isn’t the perfect blueprint of who you are begins to jettison out. You start to become a better version of you.” “It’s amazing to see the transformation,” adds Heather. “Clients look physically different. They look younger. They look lighter.” Heather has a degree in biology and is native to the West Coast. Ross has a degree in

agriculture and is native to the East Coast. They spent several years in New Hampshire before a strong intuition led them to Rhode Island to start their business. The three-room office is small, but the Newkirks are hoping to establish a sprawling facility, called the Awaken Wholeness Center, in South Kingstown. Ross acknowledges skepticism; not everyone is ready for phrases like “epigenetics” and “super-consciousness.” But the experience is indisputably relaxing, and the Newkirks are generous hosts. Whether the acoustic science makes sense or not is beside the point, as long as visitors leave with a calmer state of mind. As Ross puts it: “We try to cater to people’s level of understanding.”

TIPS Drink lots of water. The Newkirks insist on this point, but it’s just a good policy anyway. Wear sensible shoes. You’ll remove them anyway, since the feet are placed in loose-fitting Velcro straps that bring the specific geometries closer to the client due to varying heights. Mention any anxiety about small spaces. The room is comfy, but visitors shouldn’t touch the copper bars that cross over the bed. This may make you feel confined. Music can be audible or not audible, since the energy field is apparently activated regardless.

A Windy City gal finds her perfect escape in a Bonnet Shores Cape

Nadine Ferrata lives in Chicago where she’s a busy real estate agent and designer. She moved to the Midwest in her twenties after growing up on the East Coast, always knowing she’d return one day. “I love Rhode Island,” says Nadine, who in 2017 purchased a Cape Cod style home in the Bonnet Shores area of Narragansett. “I grew up in a small Cape very similar to this home. I think it brought back some childhood memories.” Sounding like the real estate agent she is, the first thing Nadine mentions about what drew her to the house is location, location, location. “The property checked off many of the musthaves on my list.” Coveted coastal features like

an outdoor shower and views of Narragansett Bay were items that this house fulfills. “And it’s not too large, and has really good bones,” she says. An avid traveler and photographer, Nadine is always looking

for design opportunities involving rehabbing and new construction projects. For this house, she worked with the DiStefano Brothers Construction team of Marisa Navakauskas on color and design details, and project manager Eric Perez on a range of renovations. Upper level ceilings were opened and raised to increase overall volume. “I love my bedroom. This truly is my happy place.” On the main level, renovations include ample counter space, subway tile, floating shelves and a chic built-in nook with big squishy pillows. The living room has a recessed fireplace, perfect for cozy nights. Furnishings are streamline with tall legs, making the most of the visual space. Nadine describes her decorating style as comfortable and sophisticated. “I try to look at everything from a question of will it stand

the test of time?” This includes selections like classic light grey walls that serve as neutral backdrops for art in a colorway she doesn’t anticipate tiring of. Most windows have minimal treatments to serve as unobstructed showcases for the natural views outside. A bit of a minimalist, Nadine notes that she aims for a seaside aesthetic without being predictable. “I like keeping things clean and fresh, that’s the key. I’m careful not to add too much beachy stuff.” Dividing her time between Chicago and South County, Nadine and her dog Gracie still have some things on their to-do list. “I’m planning on a few small things as soon as I can on my next trip and I would like to also hang a few additional photos I have taken that are very special to me. This truly is my happy place.”

LESS IS MORE Maintain a streamline look by keeping clutter to a minimum. Use tricks like concealing items in tall decorative baskets and stacking things like books so they serve as decor. LEG UP Make small spaces appear larger with legged furniture that offers comfort at a small footprint. SEASIDE FEELS Use color and texture to imbue a subtle coastal theme. Think: pale grey or white walls, mostly bare flooring and windows, and natural fibers.

Keeping things fuss-free and fabulous is what it’s all about for Nadine Ferrata’s home away from home. Borrow these ideas to give your own home a vacation house vibe.

portive of other small businesses, which I love and find so important. I live for summer here. Some of my go-to spots: the lawn at Castle Hill for drinks – the views can’t be beat. For something more low-key, a picnic at Beavertail State Park on a breezy summer day is heavenly. The farmers market at Casey Farm on Saturday mornings, walking the seawall in Narragansett, and taking scenic drives around South County are all so perfect.”

My personal style is mostly classic with a twist. As a creative person who is often on the go, I tend to wear practical work-wear – flats, a pair of denim, and a blouse or a button-up shirt. When I need to add some polish, I throw on lipstick and jewelry. My favorite thing to wear is probably linen pieces in the summer and cashmere in the winter. I’m all about high-quality, natural fabrics that are breathable and hold up over time. I’m probably a little too addicted to my green army jacket; it has two cargo pockets in the front and when I’m on the go I can stuff them with stone samples, Chapstick, my phone, etc. We’ve been in Rhode Island for a little over six years now and it’s always just been our offices. We started having more requests for appointments to shop in our [Pawtucket] studio, so we decided it was time for a proper retail space. Newport is the perfect location as it’s a bustling community with so much rich history. We make all of our jewelry in Rhode Island, so I love that I’m able to do that here. I love connecting with the community and working with local businesses. Rhode Islanders are very sup-

Backyard Food Company makes a variety of sauces, jams, relishes, and more

BACKYARD SESSIONS Matt McClelland and Louby Soukkar dish on their success with locally made products Sometimes it takes a serious event to spur on innovation and achieve success. In 2012, Matt McClelland’s life changed when he was diagnosed with a treatable but rare form of cancer in his abdomen. Laid up on his couch during recovery, Matt began to think hard about his life choices. “[The cancer] made me think about what I was putting into my body,” he says. Later on that year, Matt and his business partner Louby Soukkar started The Backyard Food Company. Today, the brand has expanded rapidly to hundreds of supermarkets and stores in New England. For a while, The Backyard Food Company was based out of – you guessed it – the owners’ backyard. The two agreed that they could make products that tasted better than what you can find at the grocery store and do so without any additives. Matt and Louby offer pickles, relishes, salsas, and butters on their food line. Talk to the duo and you might actually find out a thing or two about the national mass-production of foods. Matt says that most salsa producers use

canned tomatoes to make their products. When the business took off and became too big for their garden to sustain, he and his partner began to use fresh ingredients from a produce broker that pre-cuts the vegetables before they are cooked. Overall, the business has been very successful, almost too successful. After “getting in” to different grocery chains like Shaws, Whole Foods, Stop and Shop, and Dave’s Marketplace, Matt and Louby don’t want to get too big for their britches; they don’t want to expand their brand so rapidly that they cannot keep up with demand. “We’re trying to grow our product in a way that’s sustainable to us,” says Matt. Backyard’s most popular items are the condiment “go-to’s” that people look for to complement snacks. Their medium and mild salsas are extremely popular, and customers are happy about the way the sweet pepper relish accompanies fish, or spreads nicely on a cracker with cream cheese. Visit Arcadia Classics and the unexpected make this West Greenwich pizza place a solid go-to If you’re lucky enough to have a good neighborhood restaurant where you live, you should count your lucky stars. You know the kind of place I mean – where you can just pop in, no reservations necessary. It’s the kind of place that takes pride in its food and wacky beer list. You can grab takeout on your way home from work, and you know it’s going to be good. Arcadia Pizza is a place I’ve adopted as my local go-to. Arcadia Pizza is located just off Route 95 in West Greenwich. The space is cozy with just five tables and eight seats at the bar, and the walls are covered with shiplap and craft beer memorabilia. There are rumors about the restaurant expanding into the vacant space next door, and hopefully that’s true. The beer list at Arcadia Pizza is impressive and always changing. If you follow them on social media and you’re a craft beer fan, you will be tempted. There are a good number of local beers on the menu, and some rare ones that are hard to find. Maine Beer Company, Toppling Goliath, Deciduous, and many more have rotated through the taps. On the day I visited with friends, we tried the Heavy Seas/Grey

Sail collaboration, Wicked Smooth on draft, and the brand new Proclamation Derivative Mystery in a can. I love that they always have something new to try. Celebrating summer, we ordered two appetizers to start our meal. The RI Calamari was perfect, prepared with garlic butter, banana peppers, and marinara sauce. The squid was fresh from Point Judith, not in the slightest bit chewy, and fried to perfection. Their version of Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls were fantastic and we all remarked that we would order them again. The fried egg roll wrapper was stuffed with chicken, a blend of cheeses, and just the right amount of buffalo sauce. The pizza here is tasty. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve eaten their Fig and Brie pizza, and, going with an ol’ reliable, we ordered one on this day, too. Pizza is only as good as its crust, and Arcadia’s crust is crisp. The Fig and Brie is topped with just a schmear of fig jam – enough that you know it’s there but not so much that it’s cloyingly sweet. The jam is topped with melted Brie, and fresh arugula is topped as a finish. They have plenty of other pizzas to sample

The West Greenwich Speciality Pizza

including a New York System pizza with actual wieners on it, a Reuben pizza with all the toppings you expect on that type of sandwich, and even a Prosciutto and Pineapple pie. The rest of the menu includes a good variety of options – sandwiches, grinders, salads, burgers, and pastas. My favorite sandwich is the Sriracha Fried Chicken Sandwich. It takes a buttermilk-fried chicken breast and tops it was sriracha aioli, bacon, Vermont cheddar, red onion, and lettuce, and is served on a buttery brioche bun. Another favorite is the A.B.L.T. (A stands for avocado which takes this menu item to another level). One of my friends commented how the bread was “buttery, crispy goodness.” Another favorite is the pasta in pink vodka sauce. The pasta is blended with the sauce, some grilled chicken, and is served piping hot with garlic bread – perfect for

What’s for dinner? If that question is your daily dinnertime pre-game, you need to listen to Dinner Sisters, a podcast that Providence resident Kate Schulz hosts with her Atlanta-based sister Betsy Wallace. “Betsy would always call me at around five o’clock and say, ‘I have ground beef, one onion, and a head of lettuce, what can I make?’ and I would feed her some recipes.” They turned Betsy’s dinner woes into a podcast to help inspire other home cooks. Kate, a vociferous reader of food blogs, trolls the internet to find three recipes within their capabilities as home cooks to feature in each episode. “Two of the three must be weeknight recipes, something you can whip up quickly and painlessly after work.” The sisters make the dinners and then talk about their experiences for the podcast – the good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly. “Betsy always thought she was a bad cook,” says Kate. “But she isn’t a bad cook. She was just using bad recipes.” Kate explains that a good recipe includes flavorful ingredients in classic ratios and proportions as well as clear directions. “You would be shocked at how many recipes use weird ratios or have directions that

miss entire steps.” Kate and Betsy have adventurous palates – as do Betsy’s three kids – so the offerings range from the simple, like sprucing up a store-bought rotisserie chicken, to dishes with more complex flavor notes like massaman curry. Even with the more complicated dishes, Kate makes sure that the ingredients are easily found at local supermarkets. “The University Whole Foods in Providence is my go-to,” she says. “But I’ve found a lot of fun things at Good Fortune Grocery Store in Cranston.” While Kate produces and co-hosts a podcast for home cooks, she does appreciate dinners out, especially in her adopted home state, a foodie destination. “I never knew what good Italian food was until I moved here,” Kate, who hails from Wisconsin, says. Some favorites include Pane e Vino and Massimo on Federal Hill, as well as Persimmon for special occasions. “And I love Oberlin’s edge.” But for the podcast, the Dinner Sisters keep it simple. “We just want to help people figure out what the heck to have for dinner.” Find Dinner Sisters podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Junk & Java is an offbeat little coffee joint in Westerly, and patrons order the Iced Matcha Latte all summer long. Junk & Java isn’t the only South County café to serve Matcha Lattes, but they dedicate a whole page of their website to matcha’s virtues. Meanwhile, the sizable patio, with its Adirondack chairs and decorated walls, makes this the perfect setting for an outdoor sipping session. If you’ve always wondered what “matcha” is but were afraid to ask, wonder no more: This fine green powder is made from ground tea leaves, and the word itself is Japanese. Junk & Java prepares its Matcha Latte in two different ways – first, steamed into almond milk with a drop of honey, or second, steamed into water with a squeeze of lemon. Listed on the menu as a “health drink,” this latte is packed with antioxidants. When the temperature drops, you may also prefer it hot. The Iced Matcha Latte is a particular shade of green: bright, like a lime, a caterpillar, or spring leaves. The liquid is so creamy that you can barely see the ice cubes floating at the top. And the taste – pure refreshment, from sip to swallow. “They’re one of our most popular items,” says a peppy Junk & Java barista. “We’re always making them for ourselves, too.” Westerly, JunkNJava.net

How JA Patty’s bringing Jamaican cuisine to the forefront of local food culture Sometimes, you meet someone at the right place at the right time. One night, Warwick residents Alison Rosario and Conroy Outar met at a small business meeting. After talking a while, they realized that they both had a passion for Jamaican food and agreed there were very few Jamaican eateries in the Ocean State. At the time, both were also looking to start their own business. During their conversation, Alison blurted, “What about a Jamaican food truck?!” And from there, JA Patty, a Jamaican patty company, was born. Alison and Conroy have different culinary backgrounds. Conroy’s entrance into the culinary field was circuitous. Growing up, he oscillated between what was deemed (at the time) a “less desirable” job as a cook, and one that was more pragmatic. But when he came to the United States from Jamaica, he got a job in Cape Cod as a dishwasher and slowly worked his way up to a management position. Alison has no former culinary training but was inspired to break into the industry because of her mother’s bakery. Although the two came from different beginnings, they share a common passion: to introduce Rhode Islanders to Jamaican food. Says Conroy, “The purpose of starting JA Patty was to bring an elevated (fresher, layers of flavors, more attractive presentation) Jamaican cuisine to Rhode Island.” Alison has echoed this message, saying that the patties are just a vehicle to bring traditional Jamaican dishes like Ackee, Saltfish, and curried goat to the local population here in the state. If you’ve never had a Jamaican patty, it’s very similar to a calzone or an empanada: a spoonful(s) of a protein/veggie filling wrapped and sealed off in a parcel of dough. All of JA Patty’s products are made by hand, out of Hope & Main in Warren. Alison says that there are multiple steps to the patty-making process that need to be followed precisely and in-order. “The temperature of the dough has to be just right to mix, and later to fill without ripping the dough.” The snack food itself is, as Conroy puts it, “a collaboration of multiple cultures.” Indians (through way of the British) brought curry

spice to Jamaica when the Carribean island was colonized. That is what gives the patty its unique taste and yellow coloring. He says that the item itself is special because it’s part of Jamaican culture — like a croissant is to the French, or broken rice is to the Vietnamese. It’s a quick way to get fuel on the way to work or to fill up at lunchtime midday. One of the most common questions that the two get from first-time customers is, “What is this?” and “Is it spicy?” If you’re sensitive to spices, fear not! The chefs aim to focus on authentic flavor rather than adding spice for heat. For those unfamiliar with

the cuisine, Alison recommends trying a beef patty first as a way of introducing your palate to their menu. Then, if you’re feeling adventurous, move on to their jerk patty, and delve into their goat curry patty head-first. Currently, Alison and Conroy own a food trailer and do pop-ups across Rhode Island. The two also cater private events, but their short-term goal is to see their patties in supermarkets around the state.

RHODY

LEVELED UP LEMONADE A boozy twist on a Rhode Island classic Lauren Vella

It goes without saying, the summer months in Rhode Island can get HOT. When the temperature and the humidity is high, there’s no better way to stay cool than spiking your drink to create what we’ve dubbed a Del’s Mojito. Minty, sweet, and cold, this refresher will take fun in the sun to the next level. We’ve taken a Rhode Island classic and added a boozy twist.

MOJITO (Makes 1 drink) INGREDIENTS: * 1 cup of Del’s Frozen Lemonade * 1 double shot of Thomas Tew White Rum * 1 sprig of mint, leaves removed * Fresh mint and lemon/lime wedges for garnish DIRECTIONS: 1. In a blender, combine the frozen lemonade and rum and blend until liquor and lemonade is combined, but does not become too melted. 2. While the frozen lemonade and rum blends together, muddle the mint with a drink muddler or mortar and pestle to release the oils of the herb. 3. Combine the muddled mint and lemonade mixture in a tall glass, stir, and garnish with a mint top and lemon wedge on the side.
