This isolation painting by Coyle is titled Lying Here Alone

PAINTING OUR PAST & OUR PRESENT In Isolation, local artist Stephen Coyle shares his take on the new Rhody summer Picture this: You’re laying down on your beach towel, kids are running to the salty water with pebbles and sand meeting the bottoms of their feet, and the smell of fried food hits your nose from a distance. This kind of Rhody summer might seem out of reach, but local artist Stephen Coyle brings it to life with his paintbrush. “My intention is not to simply create a painting, but to replicate life itself – on a scale both small and large,” says Coyle. In times where we feel trapped within four walls or the CDC restrictions, Coyle uses his art to reminisce on “the old normal”. “By creating compositions within

compositions,” he says, “the eye is led from the sweeping panoramas to the intimate conversations heard along the shoreline.” Coyle’s pieces vary from pre-social distancing beach portraits to singular objects centered within mysterious backgrounds. These specific paintings coexist under the aptly titled Isolation series. Coyle adds, “I want you to not only feel the present moment, but the moment before and the moment after.” To learn more about Stephen Coyle and his work, visit StephenCoyleStudio.com or check out his Instagram @stephencoyleart. | By Jailene Perez

Purple Waves Find rolling lavender fields, a farm suite, and rustic luxury in Wakefield a unique appeal for events and agritourism.” Cabrera’s farm is just that. When you arrive, you’re greeted by a friendly Great Dane named Minnie. Minnie introduces you to Cabrera, who in turn, shows you around the farm. Sitting on 14 acres, the land that is now Lavender Waves originally belonged to the Carpenter family, who own Carpenter Farm down the road. Cabrera purchased the farm four years ago and transformed it from a “field of hay and an abandoned barn” into a “manicured lavender field and gorgeous farm suite” that, as a bonus, is eco-friendly and green certified. The tour begins at the custom-built gazebo,

lavender planted in a circle around it, punctuated by pom-pom topiaries. Find wildlife all around: Babydoll sheep (so-called for their teddy-bear faces and smiles), alpacas, a llama, Diego the donkey, and birds – about 75 of them – including gold-laced Brahma chickens, Welsh Harlequin ducks, guinea fowl, and a white peacock named Prince Harry. Then there’s the suite, which is arguably the best way to experience the farm. It’s luxuriously rustic, entirely made from reclaimed wood, from the walls (which came from an old barn in Pennsylvania) and floorboards, to the furniture, including the four-poster bed. There’s a full-sized gourmet kitchen, where specially

Lavender has a long history in medicine, aromatherapy, and skincare, dating back to ancient Egypt. The delicate purple herb has been used to reduce anxiety and stress, soothe insomnia and headaches, and even treat acne and skin irritations (among many other uses). Plus, it’s just plain pretty. “I wanted a unique crop that was relatively low-maintenance and which could provide multiple uses,” begins Henry Cabrera, host and proprietor of Lavender Waves Farm, an unexpected retreat in the heart of Wakefield. “I love its subtle, sweet aroma that comes back year after year. I immediately had visions of the opportunity to create a farm with

reserved private chef Lauren Dyer can whip up a four-course, lavender-themed dinner. The bathroom incorporates imported granite and custom amethyst geode sinks from Estonia. There is even a laundry room, complete with washer and dryer and – of course – an array of lavender products for your use. But the real showstopper is the view – you can see the sweeping fields of lavender circling the gazebo from the living room and bedroom windows. “It’s a never-ending project,” says Cabrera, “which continues to evolve as I strive to make it luxuriously rustic in every sense of the term.” While Lavender Waves Farm is mostly reserved as a private experience, visitors can stop by the farmstand for fresh eggs, lavender bundles and sachets, and raw wool and llama fleece available upon request. Cabrera also offers “pick-yourown-lavender” days (this month: August 1 and 22), while products made from the farm’s flowers can be purchased from Mama’s Gardens Skin Care. “You ask people to be a little bit silly right now, and they will – we need things that are silly,” says artist, activist, and Wickford resident Nancy Rafi. The brainchild behind the first Official Mermen of Wickford Calendar, published in 2018 in tandem with the New England Quahog Festival to raise funds to renovate the North Kingstown Town Beach playground, Rafi is “getting the band back together” to produce a new 12-month keepsake. The 2021 Mermaids + Mermen of Rhode Island Calendar will benefit the Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown, the state’s largest aquarium and New England’s only private marine education facility. “It’s independently owned and run by one guy, Mark [Hall], and right now it’s closed but he still has 2,000 marine animals he needs to take care of every day, and that can be pretty

expensive,” explains Rafi, adding that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Biomes. Blown away (and grateful) by the response of the first calendar, Rafi has already reconnected with returning photographer David Lee Black and print company Pawtucket Printmakers, identified shooting locations, collected costumes and props, and, arguably most important, secured the merfolk. “It’s a really nice, wide spectrum of people: professional ballet dancers, restaurant owners, artists, doctors… pretty much all walks of life,” says Rafi. “I can’t believe they said yes!” Jesse Jewels, a Warwick-based multimedia artist, jumped at the chance to participate. “I’m such a mermaid at heart,” she laughs, but she’s also drawn to the purpose of the calendar. “Biomes helps educate children about the importance of marine conservation,” she

A cure for Accessories explains. Much of her artwork is inspired by the sea. “This brings together the community in such a fun way.” Jewels describes her mother as a “seashell sculptor” so she turned to her to create a seashell crown for the shoot, while Jewels made the seashell bra top and is eagerly anticipating which month she’ll be representing. Rafi says she and Black will be shooting over the next few months in cities and towns across Rhode Island. “We have 12 months to fill, so we’ll include some fun landmarks,” she promises. The calendar should be available for purchase at local shops and boutiques by the beginning of September, though she admits no one can predict what the COVID-19 pandemic will leave in its wake for retailers. In the meantime, when it “drops,” the calendar will be available at RIMermaids.com.

Cabana Man At 93 years old, Frank Eldredge still works at Narragansett Town Beach – and he’s as vivacious as ever Financial Advisor

Frank Eldredge recently gained some attention on Twitter when his grandson – WPRI sports anchor Yianni Kourakis – tweeted a photo of them both (shown below). “How about my Grandfather still working three days a week at Narragansett Beach,” it

read. “He turned 93 on Saturday!” “I try to keep busy,” Eldredge told us a few weeks ago, with a gregarious laugh. Yes, Eldredge is 93 years old and he works summers at Narragansett Town Beach. He actually does a lot of things: He

Planning home improvements? takes daily walks; he goes to church several times a week; he reads a great deal of historical fiction. But the beach has been a cornerstone of his summer existence – for the past 26 years. “Originally I got hired to keep track of the money,” says Eldredge. He now works at the Narragansett cabanas, which are a hot commodity in the summer; if you sign up for a cabana rental today, you’ll spend at least 10 years on the waitlist. Eldredge knows the regulars and deals with mostly (much) younger guests. He says he’s a good fit for this position because of his amiable personality and good rapport. “I call most people by name,” says Eldredge. “I know where [regular visitors] are going to park. It’s basically dealing with young adults, giving them words of wisdom, if I can. It’s hard to get mad at somebody when they’re smiling.” Eldredge has lived all around South County – Wakefield, Saunderstown, South Kingstown – but never actually in Narragansett. He worked for years as a salesman for the Colgate-Palmolive Company, then served an additional 21 years as a salesman for Hospital Trust Bank. His wife was a school teacher and librarian; Eldredge has always liked to joke that she was a “bookie,” but fewer and fewer people seem to know what a bookie is. When Eldredge was 67 years old, he would take regular walks from Narragansett’s sea wall to the Dunes Club and back. One day, in the middle of this three-mile ritual, a Town Beach employee called him over and offered him a job. The rest is history. Today, Eldredge continues to work at the beach, accommodating guests a fraction his age. He’s a fountain of trivia and groaner-jokes, and the sunny interactions seem to sustain his youthful vigor. “People tell me I’m 70,” he says proudly. “I’ve got all my marbles, I think. I have all my original teeth. All my friends are gone, but you make new friends. That’s what life is all about.”

South County is famous for its stroll-worthy small towns – and right now is the perfect time to rediscover them By Robert Isenberg

There’s something about a good old-fashioned main street. You know the ones we’re talking about: mom-and-pop shops and restaurants, vintage brick facades, cobblestones, painted signs, and festive window displays. This is the stuff of postcards and calendar pages, but in South County, it’s simply called home. Our small towns each have that main strip that screams coastal New England, and while we’re taking time to rediscover our own state this summer, why not head inland just a bit to appreciate a little slice of Americana. With so many of these small businesses reopening, they all appreciate your patronage now more than ever. Here’s our breezy guide to rediscovering the pleasure of shopping and dining small at Main Street destinations, from the places you know to the ones you might not, so let’s mask up and enjoy! Photography by Nick DelGiudice

MAIN ATTRACTIONS Wickford is one of the best-preserved villages in the country, and its Main Street (along with West Main and Brown) is its most picturesque example. Find a range of storefronts tucked inside stately brick buildings that offer a quintessential New England vibe, plus a harbor, waterfront park, multiple coves, scenic bridges, and marina busy with yachts. You can easily cross the town on foot in about 10 minutes, but it’s worth stopping to browse some of its most unique offerings, like a two-story clapboard Colonial dedicated to cooking wares (Wickford Gourmet Factory Outlet) and a women’s fashion mainstay since the ‘70s, Green Ink Boutique, which has a sister location in Providence. Veer onto Brown Street for curated oils and vinegar from The Impressed Olive, and then grab a cuppa from cozy, family-focused diner Shayna’s Place.

DID YOU KNOW? The very end of Main Street has been home to a commercial fishing dock and seafood market since the 19th century, and today you can still buy straight from the sea at Gardner’s Wharf. Photo courtesy of South County Tourism, taken Pre-COVID-19

MAIN ATTRACTIONS Wakefield, a small village of South Kingstown, is an arts and culture hub for outdoor Shakespeare, RiverFire, and Oktoberfest celebrations. Find adorable storefronts like elle G (where you can grab a stylish face mask!) and creative dining like frozen smoothie bowls from BŌL, or old-fashioned egg creams from Green Line Apothecary, which doubles as a pharmacy and oldtimey soda fountain. Best of all, you’re just a hop, skip, and pedal away from the South County Bike Path, a bucolic and well-trafficked route connecting Narragansett to West Kingston, with Wakefield smack dab in the middle.

DID YOU KNOW? Wakefield is home to The World War II Foundation Global Education Center, an inconspicuous Main Street museum brimming with WWII artifacts, plus a wall of documentaries produced by founder, historian, and former TV sports anchor Tim Gray.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS

DID YOU KNOW?

Downtown Westerly is a world unto itself. Historic storefronts along High and Canal Streets fit neatly together, like the setting for a turn-of-the-century novel, and the Pawcatuck River courses through the town as a natural line between Rhode Island and Connecticut. You can eat and drink your way through global cuisine, starting with Mexican at Amigos Taqueria Y Tequila, gourmet pretzels from The Malted Barley, Irish fare courtesy of The Brazen Hen, and finish at The Bridge for raw bar, cocktails, and water views. Plus, Savoy Bookshop & CafĂŠ is a stunning bookstore-cafe combo on Canal, and Tapped Apple is equally exceptional, turning apples into both wine and cider.

The United Theatre has a long history, beginning in 1926 as Vaudeville venue until its quiet close in 1986; today, the historic playhouse is being renovated for another generation, and in the meantime, has been presenting films through their Virtual Screening Room, plus live concert series (co-produced with Knickerbocker Music Center) projected on screen at the Misquamicut Drive-In.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS Nestled in the southeastern part of Conanicut Island, beyond the patchwork of farms and woodland, is Jamestown. Where Narragansett and Conanicus Avenues intersect is a surprisingly busy crossroads, where restaurants like cool-casual Narragansett Cafe and upscale New American Simpatico Jamestown mingle with local landmarks and cultural institutions, like the Jamestown Arts Center, which takes over the island with installations and arts experiences for the first-ever Outdoor Arts Experience. The best part? Right along the waterfront, you can take in one of the best possible views of the Newport Bridge.

DID YOU KNOW? The village’s classic seafood joint Chopmist Charlie’s is being reimagined post-COVID as “groceraunt” IslanDish Fresh Market, a cafe, bar, and to-go gourmet food purveyor.

A cozy Jamestown cottage is a fresh take on coastal style

After graduating from Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta, Amanda Fredette returned home to North Kingstown and stayed with her parents while plotting her next move. “My mom is an amazing cook and I was getting treated like a queen so I was in no real rush to move out,” Fredette admits with a laugh. However, before

long she began a nightly ritual of looking at property listings which led to attending open houses. Nothing was catching her eye until she spotted a special little cottage in Jamestown. “My mom and I went to the well-attended open house and I thought it was too good to be true,” she retells. That evening Fredette returned with her dad

just as the owner was getting home. “We had an opportunity to chat. She was sweet, sincere, and shared how much the home meant to her. She could see in my eyes how much I loved everything about it, and the rest is history.” Fredette describes her style as Palm Beach meets New England, citing a love of

the bright, colorful style and island vibe. To achieve this look in her new home, she turned to Lee Chartier of Inside Style in Wakefield, who had also done work for her mom. “It was such a fun experience to work with a mother/daughter duo. This has happened a number of times over the years and we always enjoy working with families,” says Chartier. “When Amanda first showed us pictures of the home, we knew we could help her completely transform it,” says Chartier. “We loved the natural light and its view of the Jamestown Bridge and the Bay.” Noting that the house had good bones, most of the changes made were cosmetic: paint, refinished flooring, light fixtures, and new furnishings. Chartier met with Fredette and discussed a color palette that reflected

her personality and style. “One of Amanda’s inspirations was a patterned coral and blue fabric that we used for pillows,” notes Chartier, who incorporated the colors in accents to the neutral furnishings throughout. “Chinese Chippendale dining chairs that were custom-painted in blue are truly the stars of the room.” Discussing her sensibilities, Fredette explains, “I tend to gravitate toward soothing colors combined with a little pop, and Lee was very helpful in selecting my color scheme,” she says. “I love bright colors and unique pieces. Meet Dee Speaks This Rhode Island photographer dedicates herself to celebrating the Black experience, both in her personal work and the collaborative she co-founded

How did you get into photography and what inspires your work? My interest in photography started when I was a teenager. I always hated getting my picture taken, so I would always volunteer to be the person who took everyone’s picture. After I graduated from high school, I wanted to enroll in photography classes, but unfortunately, I allowed the opinions of others to deter me from doing that. A few years later, I started thinking about photography again and finally decided to begin my journey with taking pictures. Some of the things that inspire my work include fashion, movies, music, and everyday people and activities. I get a lot of random ideas for photo shoots while listening to music. You are the co-founder of The Vanta Guild – can you talk more about that group and how it started? The Vanta Guild was created by myself and [fellow photographer] Jonathan Pitts-Wiley. The two of us met at a photography meetup last year, and at the beginning of this year, we came up with the idea to create a community of Black photographers who unapologetically celebrate and depict the experiences and imaginations of those of the African diaspora. What we’re trying to create is something that is missing here in Rhode Island. I want the Black photographers who are a part of The Vanta Guild to be collaborative rather than competitive. There’s enough room for all of us to thrive without feeling the need to compete with each other. I’m really excited about it and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.

experiences through photography? Photographers play a major role in capturing historical moments and taking people on a visual journey. In the past couple of months, many Black photographers have drawn attention to the traumatic side of the Black experience. Although many of those images are difficult to look at, it’s necessary that people see them and acknowledge what’s going on and what has been going on for years. However, it’s also important to document the moments that aren’t disturbing. The Black experience is full of love, joy, and creativity. The images that represent that should be seen and circulated as well. Some of my favorite photos to take are of people laughing and dancing. As a Black photographer, it’s my responsibility to capture the joy and beauty of the Black experience.

Bowl-O-Rama Tableware sized just right for the smallest state As Michelle Phaneuf’s tagline proclaims, this potter strives to make “tableware a little less ordinary” – and succeeds. A designer by trade, on evenings and weekends Phaneuf heads to her Barrington studio, where she can be found rolling balls of clay to be formed and fired in her kiln. “My two lives have joined together to create simple, graphic, modern tableware,” she notes. “Highly usable and highly beautiful.” Her work is wheel-thrown and altered before the first firing, then glazed and fired again. Next, custom-designed decals of favorite Rhode Island landmarks – like the Roger Williams statue at Prospect Park and the Rhode Island State House – are applied. Each piece is then fired for a third and final time, ensuring that images are permanent. All work is food, microwave, and dishwasher safe, but as with all handmade ceramics, handwashing is recommended. While she creates pieces of different shapes and sizes, Phaneuf’s Teeny Bowls are a popular signature item. Measuring at approximately two inches high by four inches wide, these vessels are perfect for entertaining. Whether it’s a buffet of bite-sized foods, holding an array of sauces and toppings, or keeping salt and pepper loose for cooking, these small basins make a big impact. Watch the sun go down with this modern twist on moonshine The term moonshine conjures up all kinds of notions. Gangsters and country folk distilling in their basement, offering swigs (more like, dares) from a bottle with three Xs on it. Well, this isn’t the case for Seaport Shines. Sherry Bryce has put a refined spin on the hard stuff, which is available in mild flavors (and all over the state); it’s low in sugar and alcohol, and even gluten-free. We couldn’t help but play mixologist and create a cocktail using the Vanilla Blood Orange. Light and fruity without being too sweet, it’s a delightful libation that will have you rethinking this storied drink.

Photography by Nick DelGiudice

RECIPE • 2 oz Seaport Shines Vanilla Blood Orange Moonshine • 4 oz cranberry juice • Yacht Club Sparkling Water • A whole fresh blood orange • A few fresh cranberries (for garnish) • Mint leaves (for garnish) • Ice (large cubes preferred)

1. Gently knead the blood orange between your hands, then peel or cut a twist from the rind and set aside for garnish.

2. Slice the blood orange in half horizontally and juice both halves into the glass.

3. Combine the moonshine and cranberry juice in the glass with large ice cubes and roll contents to mix.

4. Top off with sparkling water and garnish with cranberries, orange twist, and a few sprigs of mint.

Food & Drink | DIY Party •

by Elyse Major

Backyard Soiree Make the most of any summer party with trusted tips from local influencers If you enjoy both sharing and being inspired by photos and videos, Instagram is the social network for you. Hashtags, while sometimes added as clever asides, are actually sorting tools used to categorize content that enable users to discover what they’re interested in quickly. It was likely #partydecor and #diyprojects that helped Alex Morse, Ingrid Brown, and Nicole Ketchum spot each other and connect. The best part? They’re all in the Ocean State. Morse owns The Creative Gene, a business focused on making things pretty with balloons, flowers, and food, and she appears weekly on NBC 10 WJAR’s lifestyle show Studio 10. Brown is an interior designer with over 55k IG followers; and Ketchum is the force behind Hey Girl Decor, a line of decorative-only chandeliers featured at Disney Springs. Recently, the group teamed up to throw a citrus-themed birthday party and we asked them to share three tips.

1. PICK

Photos by Ingrid Brown

“First, pick a theme, and from there the decision helps to decide decor, colors, food, and fun addins,” says Morse. Brown landed on lemons and citrus because, as she says, “it screams summer.” Morse and Brown exchanged inspiration photos “and then the DIYing began!” says Morse.

“Adding in the Hey Girl Decor chandelier was the piece to the puzzle! It made the party come together with a pop of glam!” says Morse.

2. PLAN “To keep calm before an event – is that even possible? – be sure to prep food,” advises Morse, who suggests slicing up items for charcuterie, chopping fruits and veggies, and prepping salads and marinades in advance. “Balloons can be done a few days ahead of time – just keep them out of the heat.” Flowers can also be prepped up to two days before an event as long as they’ve got plenty of water. “Keep florals indoors in the AC,” she adds. Then, Brown offers, “On the day of the party you can focus on getting ready and enjoy the arrival of your guests.”

3. PREP “Chopping lemons in half and scattering them among the greenery and candles to create a tablescape is a great way to showcase a theme,” Morse says. She lined vases with lemon slices before adding flowers to cultivate the theme throughout. Also, farmers markets and farm stands are best bets for in-season produce and flowers at good prices.
