A pair of mako sharks
SAVING SHARKS An accomplished South County couple uses photos, film, and education in shark conservation efforts With the popularity of movies like Jaws, it’s no secret that sharks are often considered the “bad guy” of the ocean, but wildlife cinematographers and shark specialists Joe and Lauren Romeiro are fighting to change this label. These powerful fish play a vital role in our ocean’s ecosystem, and their populations are diminishing at an alarming rate, creating a vital need for action. If you watched this year’s “Shark Week” on Discovery Channel or discovery+, you may have caught a glimpse of the Romeiros’ impressive work. The Exeter couple is a well-respected and accomplished film team dedicated to shark conservation and education, and both Joe and Lauren have work featured on Discovery Channel, Lionsgate Pictures, National Geographic, and more. Joe is an award-winning cinematographer and executive director of 333 Productions LLC, and Lauren is a marine scientist and photographer/cinematographer who currently operates a research vessel out of Wakefield. The mission is simple: to give voice to the animals they admire in the face of negative attention sharks receive. Photo by Lauren Romeiro SORhodeIsland.com • September 2021

The need for shark education and conservation is immediately clear when given the statistics. “We lose 100 million sharks per year. By this calculation, that’s three sharks per second,” explains Joe, citing shark fishing tournaments, a desire for shark meat and fins, and the use of shark products in supplements as some causes. Why is this number problematic? Sharks protect smaller fish from larger predators, allowing these smaller fish to grow and reproduce. When

shark numbers dwindle, fish populations become unbalanced and suffer, which has a detrimental ripple effect on the environment. “We have an admiration for this animal. It’s free, it’s beautiful, it’s powerful, it’s frightening – it has all these traits we admire,” Joe states. There’s an entire week of television dedicated to celebrating the animal, and yet, its survival is often overlooked. The couple offers various ways to aid conservation efforts, with education playing
a large role. Sharks are not out to attack humans, and misconceptions like this need to be corrected. As Lauren explains, “The more people learn about them, the more they understand them and don’t fear them,” making people more willing to help. In addition to learning about sharks, people can check goods like cosmetics and medications to ensure they don’t have shark products in them, abstain from shark fishing, be active and vocal, and support

With these efforts, the Romeiros are optimistic that positive change can be made. “We’ve been able to protect things all over the world by just having enough eyes on it,” Joe says, adding, “if we get enough eyes on here, enough people are going to care, and things are going to change.” More eyes are certainly being put on the topic through their work, as well as the documentary Fin on discovery+, in which
the Romeiros worked with Hollywood director Eli Roth and executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio. The Romeiros’ Instagram accounts (@laurenromeiro333 and @joeromeiro333) and web presence (laurenromeiro.com, 333productions.com, and joeromeiro.com) also provide information and footage. “Long story short, you can tell we love sharks,” says Joe, and with their work, the couple hopes that more people will come to care for sharks, too.

Rhody Pets now includes “Rhody Pet of the Month” a sidebar curated by Karen Kalunian, host of Animal Talk, a weekly radio show on WPRO. Kalunian shares that her rescue efforts trace their roots to a five-pound Maltese dog named Gizzy. “Six pounds if she’d had a few extra treats!” chuckles the animal advocate. “For 14 years I took her everywhere with me, developing a noticeable case of ‘dog arm’ from carrying her!” When Gizzy passed away in 2010, Kalunian was in “deep anguish” and began volunteering at what is now Heart of RI Animal Rescue League in Cranston, as a way of honoring her beloved pet. “I was happy to help but it pained me to see certain animals repeatedly overlooked due to their age, or
health issues, or the fact they seemed ‘old news’ if their picture had been up on the website a while.” An idea for how to address this common shelter problem came when Kalunian’s daughter Kim was directing a youth production of Annie and seeking a dog to cast as Sandy. “I saw this as an opportunity to showcase one of the long-timers: Buddy was a pretty, fluffy, Chow-mix senior who had sustained some injuries, which is one of the reasons she wasn’t getting applications, but given this chance to show her personality, she became the star of the show and found a cozy beachside home as a result!” This wasn’t the first time that Kalunian used a platform for good. In her role as Mrs. RI America, she saw how media attention

‘We’re not going to allow it’: Advocates push for greater access to Rhode Island beaches Advocates for shoreline access are continuing to draw attention to what they say are ongoing threats to beach rights in Rhode Island. Some of them gathered in South Kingstown to collect seaweed and push for legislation to better clarify where the public is allowed to be on the shore.
Charlestown resident Valaree Villani got to the beach early Saturday morning. She came to watch her great nephew play in the water, but she also wanted to send a message to property owners, like the one who hired the nearby private security

guards watching her. “We’re a loving state,” she said. “We’re a welcoming state. But please don’t come here and think you’re going to own the beach, because we’re not going to allow it. And that’s just the bottom line.”
Villani was part of a small group that came to collect seaweed along the shore in South Kingstown, just past the Charlestown Town Beach. Scott Keeley organized the event and has some history at the spot. Keeley was

collecting seaweed on the beach in 2019 when police handcuffed and arrested him for trespassing. The charges were later dropped. He said he still wants to get the word out that people can legally enjoy the shoreline, even if it’s adjacent to land that isn’t public. “We understand private property ownership,” Keeley said. “But we also understand that we have a Rhode Island Constitution, and we’re here to exercise our constitutional rights.” But nearby beachfront property owner Keith Wilcox said he paid a lot of money for his land, and he has rights, too. “My take is: when the state and town beaches allow people to start fires on their beach, fish, play cornhole, drink, get naked, and litter their stuff all over, then guess what – I’ll let everybody on my beach, too,” he said. As Wilcox spoke, the activists picking up seaweed gathered around. Someone brought up legislation that was proposed to decriminalize trespassing along the coast, as long as someone is within 10 feet of the most recent high tide line. Right now, the state’s highest court has said the public has to stay below a multi-year mean hightide line. Advocates think the change would help clarify shoreline rights. Wilcox sees things differently. “You’re going to clarify something that’s very clear? That’s redundant,” he said. “It says ‘shoreline,’ and you look again in Webster, any dictionary, it’s going to say ‘shoreline is where the water meets the sand.’” One activist countered, “But that’s not the definition we’re going by.” The crowd left. But the debate won’t stop there. State lawmakers recently approved a House commission tasked with studying shoreline access. It plans to deliver its results next spring.

Rhythm & Roots Returns How festival producer Chuck Wentworth got the beloved show back on stage Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys performing at the 18th Annual Rhythm and Roots Festival
Rhythm & Roots is a Rhode Island tradition. The state’s largest locally run music festival, it returns this Labor Day weekend after the pandemic forced cancellation in 2020. The Charlestown event promises to be as vibrant as ever, with nationally recognized headliners taking the stage each day. And no one is more excited about it than festival producer Chuck Wentworth. “We got off to a really good start in 2020,” Wentworth begins. “We sold more tickets in advance during those first two months than we’ve ever done. People were really happy with the line-up; we were just sailing along, and then everything came to a screeching halt.” Pausing to reflect, he continues, “At that point, we refunded hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of
20
SORhodeIsland.com • September 2021
tickets, and that was a very painful process, but we did it. We refunded everyone who bought a ticket, instead of trying to roll things over.” Like so many live events, Wentworth pivoted to a virtual model last summer, with Rhythm & Roots made up of performances recorded over previous years. “It’s not the same thing,” he concedes. “This year, we had about 75 percent of the acts from last year confirmed to return. Interest was high.” Throughout the winter, Wentworth shares that planning for this year’s festival was touch and go for a while. He worked with state and local officials for permission and updates on restrictions and notes that Governor Dan McKee was instrumental in bringing the festival back this year. “He’s very
much pro-music, pro-festival, pro-tourism. He’s been behind a lot of efforts to get these festivals up and running. He’s put the state offices behind it all,” says Wentworth. The financial loss during the pandemic was devastating for many businesses, but Rhythm & Roots pulled through. Still, this year’s festival will look slightly different. “We’ve eliminated the Family Stage and the Youth Music Camp out of concern for those under 12 who will not be vaccinated,” Wentworth explains. “There will be limited capacity overall; we’re keeping an eye on the numbers. We want to make sure that there is a lot of space and no congestion. We want to have people spread out and enjoy themselves, and not ruin the experience.”

SCHOOLS ARE OPEN, WATCH FOR CHILDREN & DRIVE SAFELY! In addition to headliners like Rhiannon Giddens, Richard Thompson, and John Hiatt, Rhythm & Roots serves as a perennial launch pad for emerging artists. “We have a young woman out of Providence, Charlie Marie, who just put out a great new recording called Ramble On. We’re going to showcase her on Saturday in the afternoon. On Friday night we’ve got a jam band-based theme with Will Evans of Rusted Root,” he adds. “Of course we’ll be following state and CDC guidelines. The safety of our patrons, our musicians, our vendors, and our volunteers are of utmost concern for us. We want everyone to have a great festival!” Rhythm and Roots Festival, Ninigret Park, Charlestown; RhythmandRoots.com

The Scoop | rhody gem •
By Emma Nicholson
SOS reTAIL Pet Shop
We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it!
What it is: A full-service pet supply store, SOS reTAIL offers plenty of gear and treats along with in-house dog grooming, training, DIY wash stations, educational workshops, and adoption services.
What makes it a Rhody Gem? Little Rhody’s only pet store to donate 100 percent of their profits to animals in need, SOS is an ideal spot for spoiling your own critter with healthy treats and toys while also feeling good about the furry friends you’re helping with a purchase. As part of Save One Soul Animal Rescue League, the shop is committed to creating a personalized customer experience to help you find the perfect products and services for your pet. The shop also houses The Pooch Parlor and Bad Dog Basics, which offer grooming and training, respectively. “We strive to make each guest in our store feel like family: comfortable enough to share their stories and challenges, and safe enough to be open to good advice and new ways of looking at things,” says founder Emma Dawley. She adds, “SOS reTAIL is a collaborative effort of several great organizations… and that’s the feeling our customers get when experiencing our store – that they are part of something bigger than themselves.”

Dog-Friendly SOUTH SOUTH COUNTY CO U N T Y Late summer is ideal for excursions around the region with Rover BY BELINDA JONES
S
eptember is the perfect month to shift gears from summer and explore a more relaxing side to South County. Here we take a dog-themed jaunt from Wickford to Weekapaug, with a focus on the quieter pursuits of coffee, books, art, and musical serenades, while encountering the maximum number of resident pups en route! Listen closely and you’ll hear your dog sighing in contentment.
Wickford Village Pretty much every street in this historic fishing village is a joy for dogs. Notable stops are Shayna’s Place (45 Brown Street) with dog-friendly cafe seating along the walkway leading to the marina, as well as award-winning sandwiches, raw juices, and nitro cold brew. Over at Serendipity (3 Main Street), four-yearold Chocolate Lab Lacey snoozes contentedly beside the squirrel-shaped dog treats as owner Melissa Beckwith showcases made-with-love Rhode Island artisan gifts in what was once a pet store (especially cute are the baby onesies with Ruff Life logos and the beach/bath hoodies appliqued with a floppy-eared pup). Would a house overrun with 10 puppies be your idea of heaven? Katie Hutchinson and Jim Fusaro of flatfish cottage (12 Main Street), a home decor and accessories shop, lived that dream while fostering for Heart of RI Rescue and literally had the pick of the litter when it came to their store puppy. Twelve-week-old Abbie now models Beware Of Dog Kisses pillows and lavender-scented paw balm in this artfully curated, neutral-hued home store. “Abbie’s favorite walk is to the grassy area outside the First Baptist Church; it’s just a few minutes but she has to stop and meet every person on the way!” says Hutchinson.

Jamestown Portrait by Alexandra Kent
Jamestown is home to artist Alexandra Kent (AlexandraKent.com) who paints endearing and affordable animal portraits in her garden studio amid a flutter of butterflies and cluck of chickens. Kent’s long-haired German Shepherd Rosie watches over every brush stroke and makes sure she takes breaks to stretch and throw a ball. One local spied Kent’s work on display at Island Animal pet store (35 Narragansett Ave) and commissioned a portrait of her late Carolina Dog mix: “Alex so captured my dog’s essence that my heart skipped a beat – for a moment it was like seeing him again!” she shared. Once you have sighed at the Newport Bridge views from Conanicus Avenue or frolicked at Fort Wetherill State Park, venture inland to the Village Hearth Bakery & Cafe (2 Watson Avenue). You might spot a feisty Morkie (Maltese-Yorkie) relishing a slice of thick bacon amidst shady outdoor spaces. Consider a Portuguese muffin for your breakfast sandwich and a Newport Craft Blueberry Ale for your beverage.

Narragansett & South Kingstown Sandy paws are always welcome at the walkup window to The Pour House (3 Pier Marketplace). Coffee connoisseurs and owners Joshua Katz, Katarina Reisch, and Dwight Albrecht, Jr. dote on every canine customer and dispense Doggacinos: little espresso cups filled with dog treats; they even named one beverage after Labradoodle regular
Maizey, who frequents the spot with owner Kristin Urbach, executive director of North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. For a sunset tipple head to TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill (210 Salt Pond Road). While your pal enjoys the complimentary dog biscuits, sip on a Bloodhound Cocktail made from Tito’s vodka, muddled strawberry, basil, and
lemon, content in the knowledge that 25 percent of every sale benefits Animal Rescue Rhode Island. You might even come nose to nose with an ARRI pup as staff take adoptable pets on mini outings here, and to Java Madness (134 Salt Pond Road), as both have decks overlooking the marina, offering lots of pleasing sea dog sniffs.

BE A GOOD DOG According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, pet waste left on the street or lawn does not just go away or fertilize the grass. Rain washes it down storm drains and into waterways like rivers, bays, and beaches. This can make people sick from salmonella, E. coli, and other infections. Pet waste is very toxic – the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that waste produced by just 100 dogs in two or three days (or one weekend) can contain enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay to swimming and shellfishing. Pet waste also provides a nitrogen source for algae blooms, which deplete the water of oxygen and can make people and animals sick. • Remember to scoop the poop and dispose of it properly – at home and in the community. • Follow local rules for pets at the beach. State beaches do not allow dogs during the on-season from April 1 to September 30. Town beach rules may vary, but they are generally posted at the beach. • Follow the leash laws for your city or town, and always keep your dog on a leash at state parks and beaches. • Dispose of pet waste properly: Place sealed bags of pet waste in the trash. It may help to double bag dog waste or kitty litter. Do not throw waste near or into storm drains, and do not dump kitty litter outside. Do not flush pet waste down your toilet. Source: HealthRI.gov

Like a scene from The Lion King, Tayla Luddy lifts her five-pound Shih-Poo puppy Beckett aloft, marveling as the sunlight illuminates his strawberry-blond fur. The pair limber upon the banks of the Saugatucket River for the Wakefield portion of the South County Bike Path. This seven-mile trail is hugely popular for dog-walkers, yet you can still have quiet, leafy stretches all to yourself. The quickest way to restore any calories burned is to order a Morning Bun at South County Bread Company (333 Main Street). Described as the love child of a croissant and cinnamon roll, you’ll also picture a Parisian culinary school as you experience the caramelized crunch and rich buttery flavor. Dog-friendly tables are set European-style on the sidewalk. Just don’t be surprised if your pup tries to head home with owners Jeff and Keri Lyn Collins – word is their Australian Shepherd Bridget lives in crumb heaven. Across the street, Caf Bar (396 Main Street) boasts a lovely pet-friendly patio with Moroccan rugs, maple bourbon lattes, and connecting doors leading to Rarities Antiquarian & Vintage Books. This is a truly charming new addition to downtown Wakefield with a grand opening planned at press time for Labor Day weekend. Signings include the authors of A to Z for D-O-G and Dash: My Diary of Love, Life and Cookies, written from the perspective of a South County Yellow Lab with Christine M. Connolly. Owner Kelly Allen Kujawski (a two dog mama) is a bookbinder by trade and offers hand-bound notebooks plus fascinating vintage reads, including a 1950s copy of Kasha’s Dog Owners Guide which sagely notes: “It is not necessary to make a vaudeville performer out of your dog.”

West Kingston Shaidzon Beer Company (141 Fairgrounds Road) has a pup-friendly beer garden set by the train tracks for a whistle-by thrill, and if you’re lucky, Captain Cheese’s food truck will be parked in the lot. Sara R and her Doodle Lemon were in from Portland visiting family and enjoying craft brews including Sea & Sand Pale Ale.
Richmond
If a dog designed a pet store, it would look exactly like Fetch RI (91 Kingstown Road). This cute white clapboard house has such a bountiful treats bar there’s even a section dedicated to birthday cookies and cake mix. One room brims with toys, while another features catwalk-ready leashes and collars. Best of all, owner Johnna Devereaux is a clinical pet nutritionist who can offer safe, natural solutions to pet problems. This makes for a worthwhile and scenic excursion, especially with Alaina’s Coffee + Kitchen next door. Slide onto one of the colorful Adirondacks and enjoy a yummy Local Hot Honey Grilled Cheese or Acai Bowl with Nutella drizzle while your pup chows down on its healthy no-hide chew.

Lacey loves the grounds at Dave’s Coffee
Despite its vantage point of vrooming Highway 1 traffic, Dave’s Coffee (5193 Old Post Road) has a secret garden quality to its sprawling grounds. Petite Cattle Dog mix Lacey happily takes in every Instagram-friendly aspect, from the flower-draped gazebo to the iconic vintage green truck, with a clear favorite being the shady grotto area with its cooling rock pool. Providence-based owner Susanna Hall recommends the iced Coffee Milk and outsize strawberry and white chocolate muffins, still warm from the oven. Looking for a fun keepsake? The Barn at A Shore Thing (2183 Matunuck Schoolhouse Road) has fun Nauti Dog tea towels and sturdy shopping totes repurposed from dog food sacks. Designed to take the weight of 14 pounds of kibble, they are a practical if unconventional resource with every dollar received going to Charlestown Animal Rescue. “I get goosebumps thinking about the customer who added a $100 bill to her purchase!” says The Barn owner Patty Surname. “That’s a true animal lover!”

Misquamicut
The prettily pink Sea Shell Motel (19 Winnapaug Road) is just 200 yards from Misquamicut beach and has a waterfront backyard so you can step directly onto Winnapaug Pond. Kayaks are free to use and there is an outdoor shower, ideal if you are introducing your pup to the water for the first time; rinse, repeat, and take a snooze break in your room in between sessions! Look out for Lola the Pomeranian perched on the check-in desk – she has startled guests who mistook her for a fluffy toy.

Westerly
Savoy Bookshop & Cafe (10 Canal Street) could double as a movie set with its 1886 architecture, stay-a-while brown leather armchairs, and barista-frothing soundtrack. The styling may be classic but the books are keenly current, including Jim Davies’ Be The Person Your Dog Thinks You Are and the beautifully illustrated recipe book My Dog Eats Better Than Me. Louis M. came in for a cappuccino with his Labradoodle Buddy, before heading to artsy, elegant Wilcox Park (44 Broad Street) to burn off some of his pup’s evening energy. Time your walk for 2pm on Sunday, September 19 and you’ll hear 20 violinists performing Vivaldi for the Summer Strings concert as you wander around the beautifully landscaped arboretum.
Weekapaug
The Weekapaug Inn (25 Spray Rock Road) offers the ultimate dog-friendly staycation bliss. Canine guests are welcomed to this peaceful peninsula hideaway with dog beds and bowls, house-baked treats, and even, on occasion, peanut butter rewards and carrot birthday cakes. “So many of our guests are regulars. We have seen their dogs grow from puppies to seniors,” says General Manager Corinne Finn-Heyl. Use of paddle boards and kayaks are complimentary and dog-friendly, as deftly demonstrated by a Portuguese Water Dog. Preferring a regal glide across Quonochontaug Pond in the Inn’s boat, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (AKA @charlotte_thequeencharles) looks in her element and earns a new nickname: Queenie on the Quonnie! Even if a five-star stay is not in your wallet, you can enjoy the tranquil vista by coming for lunch or dinner. On Friday and Saturday nights, classical guitarist Tommy Giarratano creates such a mesmerizingly mellow atmosphere it seems preferable to dine alone with your furry friend so you can sit back and relish every strum, not to mention every bite of your cooked-to-perfection meal.

Drawing on Experience The charming and altruistic side-hustle of Hasbro Children’s Hospital pediatric surgeon-in-chief When Francois Luks, MD PhD, pediatric surgeon-in-chief at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, meets with the parents of a young patient before a complex operation, he turns to illustration to calm their nerves. On a whiteboard in an exam room, Dr. Luks will sketch up a quick diagram of a part of the body and how he’ll eventually operate on it, walking the parent through the surgery step by step with simple visual cues. He whips out a pad of paper and sketches a graceful side profile in one swift motion to demonstrate how he might visually explain a neck lesion operation, as one example. Illustration transcends language, Dr. Luks says, bringing comfort to patients and families who might not speak English natively. “Medicine really has a lot of complicated jargon,” he says. “So it’s sometimes easier to explain with a drawing than with words.” Over the course of his career, Luks has found a certain personal solace in illustration, too. As a medical student
in Belgium, he illustrated a daily comic strip for a local newspaper. And at Brown University, Luks teaches a course dedicated to medical illustration. Today, a series of his digital illustrations pay homage to Rhode Island in a set of notecards displaying recognizable locales of the Ocean State, in a collection aptly entitled “Rhodeside Attractions.” Profits from the notecards’ sales directly benefit the Hasbro
Children’s Hospital and its programming. Dr. Luks’ hope is that the notecards will find their way to Rhode Islanders scattered across the country, on opposite coasts, bringing them a taste of home in a drawing of the Narragansett Towers or of Del’s Lemonade. “You go elsewhere in the country, and you can’t help but meet people from Rhode Island,” he says. “They’re everywhere.” Learn more at Rhodeside.art

Stand in the Place Where You Live From bread to blooms: a field guide to local honor system shacks
Daddy’s Bread

Drive along Moonstone Beach Road in Matunuck and if you’re lucky, a flag will be flying from a wood post wrapped in flowers, signaling that Daddy’s Bread is open for business. This is no ordinary storefront, and neither is the bread. Founded in 1975 by Everett J. Hopkins as a hobby, the retail space is actually an honor system shack on the family property. Stocked with loaves of artisanal breads now made by Hopkins’ daughter Jennifer Hopkins Manzo, loaves are $7 each – $8 for the Blueberry Apple Cinnamon – and are all processed using only a single mixer. “You will be able to pronounce all ingredients in our breads, and you will know what you’re putting in your body,” declares Manzo. P.D.G. (parmesan, garlic, dill) is revered, and judging by how quickly the nearly 20 varieties disappear – from Anadama to Jonny Cake to Watercress Herb – they’re all in demand. If you’re a fan of farm-to-table, it doesn’t get any fresher than a self-service stand where what you see is what you get. By patronizing these old-timey spots you are not just helping the local economy but a family – directly, and it’s all built on trust. Take to the open road to discover modest carts, stands, and even tented tables with fresh-picked, homespun offerings using the honor system model. This means that goods are presented with posted prices and generally there is a cash box or covered canister nearby for the
original self-serve transaction, with many now also accepting payment via the Venmo app. Often found along rural routes but sometimes at the edges of suburban driveways, these humble cottage industries are mostly run as side-hustles and seasonally – meaning they’re not consistently stocked – so happening upon one filled and ready is a worthy prize in its own right. Near URI in West Kingston, Pasquale’s honor system farmstand blossomed during the pandemic, offering essentials to neighbors in a safe outdoor space, and has since become a tucked-away hub for locals in the know. Along the woodsy stretch of Usquepaugh Road, watch for the quaint lean-to

shed with large rustic letters. While the outside is lush with plant starters and farm-fresh produce, owners Frank, Mark, and Lauren Pasquale have outfitted the inside of this former Rhody Gem (October 2020) to display wares from area makers, from woodworking pieces by a high school crafter to all-natural soaps from Wakefield’s Watson Wax. Julie Beebe, who owns Yes! Gallery in Wickford Village with husband Palmer, explains that bottles of their own Beebe’s Bees raw local honey, had been a best seller for years. When their shop was ordered to close in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdown, Beebe experimented with adding a cash box to the sidewalk display. “People are so honest
in our little village, and it worked beautifully!” says Beebe, who notes that the honey sold at the stand paid for their family’s groceries the entire time the shop was closed. Says Beebe, “It’s easy for our local honey fans to get their fix on the go!” “Operating on the honor system keeps people’s minds in check,” says Manzo. “Think, add, think again, do the right thing. If they do not do the right thing, in 20 years the next ‘Daddy’ will get a note that states ‘20 years ago I stole from you. I am sorry,’ with a $20 bill attached just as I did. I gave the note and the cash to my dad. He smiled and I felt in that moment, he thought to himself, ‘my job is done here, it’s your turn to teach’.”

a new purchase sitting in the closet,” says Brown. “It is important to us that we help our customers find clothing that is unique but is still their own style,” she adds. And the shop name? “It was chosen because we felt it reflected what we were trying to achieve: helping women feel good about themselves and making shopping enjoyable.”

Meet Alex Nunes The Public’s Radio reporter dishes on savoring his South County beat Have you always lived in Rhode Island? If not, what brought you here? I grew up in Farmington, Connecticut. I first moved to Rhode Island in 2004 to attend Rhode Island College. My wife and I moved to Westerly in 2014 after visiting the town and loving it. What led you to pursue a career in journalism/broadcasting? When I was in college, I rented the movie The Insider about a 60 Minutes investigation into the tobacco industry. I thought, “Being a journalist looks awesome!” So I applied for an internship at The Public’s Radio (then known as WRNI) and the rest is history.
What are your favorite local small businesses to dine, shop, and have fun? I spend a lot of my time at Westerly Library & Wilcox Park. I also love Stick + Fin coffeehouse, Savoy Bookshop & Cafe, Pompelmo Gelateria, Rhode Island Surf Co., Malted Barley, Thai Corner Cafe, Cooked Goose, Mews Tavern, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Ocean State Job Lot, Wakefield Running Company, the Ocean Community YMCA, Rock Spot Climbing, Westerly Land Trust trails, Joyce’s Everyday Gourmet, and Dave’s Coffee, to name a few places. I’m also very excited about the opening of The United Theatre in downtown Westerly, where The Public’s Radio will have our South County Bureau. When you’re not writing/reporting what are your interests? I enjoy reading a lot (a mix of fiction and non-fiction), cooking, and going on walks with my family. I’ve also been working hard the last yearand-a-half to improve my Portuguese speaking. My dad’s family is from Madeira island, and my wife and I are visiting Portugal next year.

You cover the South County beat. What do you like best about being part of this community? South County is a very small world. Each town is the type of place where people know each other, are aware of the issues in their community, and really care. Because of this, people are very engaged with the subjects I write about, which is probably the most rewarding thing for a journalist.

OUT OF THE BASKET Traveling picnic business curates experiences with farm-fresh menus and all the accoutrements Though a wedge of cheese, sleeve of crackers, and paper napkins unfurled on a woodsy table will do the trick in a pinch, Perfect Picnix dares to take the experience further, transporting guests to a faraway Bohemian scene where grapes, artisanal meats, gourmet jams, and soft pita are abundant, seating is plush pillows, and wine flows in crystal vessels. A sturdy pallet of fresh fruit and cheese rests on a colorful knit blanket, and a curated playlist backdrops lawn games or scavenger hunts even after the feast has diminished. “We reinvent the nostalgic tradition of lovingly handmade picnics that transform an ordinary day into a magical occasion,” says coowner Alyssa Ann Heller. “We can do something as simple as preparing a romantic picnic for two, which can be picked up at our Warren facility. Or we can do a larger-scale custom event, delivering to the destination of your choice,” whether that’s a park overlooking the water or your own backyard. And Bohemian isn’t the only theme: Personalized picnics out of wicker baskets can include sweet or savory charcuterie boards, experiential props like cornhole or bocci, and with their recent acquisition of Sweet Streams Chocolate Fountains, cascading waterfalls of fine chocolate, cheese, or barbecue sauce to elevate even an outdoor gathering thanks to plexiglass enclosures. For fall, watch for the bounty of late harvests incorporated in autumnal grazing: butternut squash and dried cranberries with pomegranate dressing, spiced pumpkin quinoa salad, and farm-fresh granny smith apple slices topped with pecorino cheese, truffle honey, corn kernels, and roasted hazelnuts. Fall Food Truckin’ Outdoor events at community venues have kept the motors running for pop-up businesses Everyone has their favorite: Maybe it’s a taco truck or a burger joint on wheels, frozen ice or rice bowls. Followers of the food truck circuit are the new concert groupies when it comes to warm-weather dining, and far from stifling this trend, the pandemic has spurred many businesses into the mobile pivot. Organizations like PVD Food Truck
Events have paved the way for new and long-standing trucks to pop up on the scene all through last year and this summer with socially distanced events that satiated communities’ cravings for fast and novel eats. “These events helped the food trucks salvage the 2020 season while being prepared and ready to come back strong this year,”
explains Eric Weiner, organizer behind PVD Food Truck Events. “We continue to support over 50 locally owned food trucks that attend our events in a rotation.” Food Truck Fridays are a staple at Roger Williams Park, but gatherings are also hosted all over the state, including South Kingstown, where Black Dog Donuts can be found.

“We opened last year in the middle of the pandemic, and it was a blessing in disguise,” recalls Black Dog Donuts owners Michelle and Charlie Colberg. “We got to ease our way into food truck life and work out a lot of the kinks. This year the response has been incredible. People are making up for lost time and have been coming out to events in droves.” A frequent flyer of the South Kingstown Food Truck Night at Extreme Airsoft, the dessert truck will also be slinging mini-donuts fresh off the fryer at the Rhythm & Roots festival in Charlestown September 3-5. At Narragansett Beach, Food Truck Nights every Monday and Wednesday have brought together a lineup that includes Gansett Poké and HG80, among others. “Just like brick-and-mortar restaurants, there are good and bad food trucks, but I think that the quality and variety of food coming out of trucks has really grown,” says HG80 owner Josh Berner, who turns favor-
ite dishes like BBQ and chicken parm into handheld tacos. “At HG80, we make everything from scratch with good quality, local ingredients, and we’re not alone.” Add music, funky lighting, dancing, and authentic interactions with guests, and you can expect an overall lively experience at HG80. Gansett Poké has been on the scene since 2019 in their recognizable solar panel-covered cart purveying raw seafood bowls and an eco message. “We bring really fresh and healthy food,” explains owner Michelle Frank. “We also try to honor our environment. All of our food is served in compostable bowls with wood forks. We don’t sell anything in plastic. Our solar power keeps all of our food icy cold and our rice is kept hot with thermal rice warmers.” Late summer and early fall brings plenty of opportunities to find all your favorites at festivals, farmers’ markets, breweries, and more to sample what these nimble trucks have spent the past year perfecting.
PVD Food Truck Events These free outdoor gatherings pop up across the state, featuring all styles of food trucks in one place, often with live music and entertainment. Find their September South County lineup below, and follow on Facebook for more events @pvdfoodtruckevents. To track down a specific truck, try RIFoodTrucks.com. Raising the Bar by Raising a Glass Winemakers choose Rhode Island as home for their business, sourcing from grape growers around the world Anchor & Hope Art Series
It’s crystal clear when you speak to globetrotting winemaker James Davids that his craft is more than just a profession: it’s a passion. Winemaking has consumed his entire adult life, first by studying viticulture and enology at the University of California, Davis; later as a winemaker in Germany and New Zealand, working at wineries in Napa and Sonoma; and finally, launching Anchor & Hope, his own négociant winery that he developed with wife and business partner, Marissa Stashenko, originally from Medfield, Massachusetts. The couple met on the West Coast, where Stashenko was working in digital marketing. In 2018, the two decided to head east to launch a new winery concept that makes the most of the diverse, international partnerships Davids has forged with small family grape growers in Oregon, California, and the Rheinhessen – Germany’s largest wine region. “The downside of being in California was I couldn’t really collaborate with all these people who I really admired and
60
SORhodeIsland.com • September 2021
respected in the industry, people I had worked for or studied with, so that’s the idea of opening this négociant winery,” explains Davids. The word “négociant” means “trader” in French, and Anchor & Hope acts as the trader, or wine merchant, that sources wines from multiple growers – in their case, growers with whom they have long-standing personal relationships. They purchase the wines, finish them, age in barrels if needed, bottle, label, and sell to retailers and restaurants all over the state and beyond. Davids and Stashenko, along with one additional employee, do it all from an industrial space at Phillipsdale Landing on the Seekonk River in the Rumford section of East Providence. “When you’re actually working with a specific vineyard and you believe in it, then year after year, you’re pulling that same fruit from that vineyard and trying your best to make the best wine you can to honor whatever tradition there is surrounding the wine,” explains
Davids. “The wines come here when they’re still very much alive and still fermenting.” Their rosé, for example, their most popular wine, is grown at a family estate in the Rheinhessen that practices sustainable farming and minimal intervention winemaking. Davids then ferments the wine in stainless steel tanks in Rumford until it achieves its light “zippy” finish, featuring notes of strawberry and guava “with peppery and floral aromatics.” Many think of winemaking as people stomping on grapes, what Davids calls “the most romantic part” of the process, but he’s quick to point out that winemaking is a farm business more than anything else. “The tirage, the aging of the wines … and bottling them in a state where they continue to taste good as time goes on; it is carrying the wine to the finish line. At this point of my life as a winemaker, it’s not where the glamour is, but it’s certainly the finesse of winemaking.” Anchor & Hope’s wine portfolio also includes

bottles and cans of sauvignon blanc, two types of riesling (one is dry and the other is more traditional, called Feinherb), chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet franc, Mendo Red (a field blend of old vine Syrah, Grenache, and Zinfandel) and Grüner Veltliner. Davids and Stashenko are planning to increase their footprint by opening a tasting room and expanded space on the waterfront just steps from their current location. In addition, they plan to start buying grapes from local farmers or leasing some land and planting grapes. Says Stashenko, “Every wine grown in its own region has its different characteristics, which is really cool, and that’s why we’re really excited to play around with wine grown here now that we’ve been here for a little while. We’ve done some experimentation with some local grown hybrid varietals that you probably never had heard of but that grow well here.” Learn more at AnchorHopeWine.com

Indian and Nepalese cuisine joins South County Commons “Taj stands for ‘crown’ in Hindi, and we want customers to feel that they are being offered the highest quality of food and service,” says manager Ritu Thapa of South County Commons’ newest restaurant. Owned by Nepal-born chefs Devendra Khadka and Chandra B. Thapa who have 20 years of experience at the likes of Rasa and Rasoi, TAJ is a blend of Nepalese and Indian cuisine made with rich spices and traditional techniques. Naan, for instance, is baked fresh in clay tandoori ovens until golden brown, and
Gobi Manchurian, a crispy cauliflower dish, uses the chefs’ special manchurian sauce to achieve a blend of tangy and savory. A Nepalese dumpling stuffed with chicken, MO:MO: is a popular appetizer and a trademark of the owners’ upbringing. “Nepalese eat momo at just about any time of the day, making it the most famous street food,” explains Thapa. “Here at TAJ, we serve MO:MO: three different ways: steamed, fried, or chili – but chili has become everyone’s favorite!” Wakefield, TajRhodeIsland.com

Warwick bakery’s sister business specializes in vegan cookie dough There’s only one thing better than fresh-baked cookies right out of the oven: a spoonful of the dough straight from the fridge. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure when you’re indulging in Party Sloth, a sister-brand of Warwick-based Celebrated that recently launched a line of vegan cookie dough you can get by the tub. Though entirely bakeable, owner Becky Morris explains, “Our cookie dough stands out because it is dairy-free, egg-free, and 100 percent safe to eat raw. Safety is a key priority, so we use heat-treated flour and a starch-based egg replacer.” With a tagline of “vegan treats for chill times,” this snack can appropriately be found in the refrigerated aisle of Dave’s Fresh Marketplace in East Greenwich, easily recognizable by the blue compostable container covered in joyful sloths in party hats. “If there’s enough demand for our dough, we’re told it may be making an appearance at more Dave’s locations,” says Morris, or you can order online from anywhere and even subscribe for monthly dough-liveries. Inventive entrees on Main Street, Wakefield Whether you’re settling in for a cozy date night or stopping by for lunch during a day of shopping Wakefield’s Main Street, Duck Press was designed to be a vibrant space with creative pasta and seafood fare and extensive wine list. “Mark and I opened Duck Press as a restaurant that we would want to go and dine at,” says co-owner Alicia Bryson, who opened the restaurant earlier this summer with her husband Mark. “We love cocktails to start our meal, then a solid three courses (at least), and then finish our evening with a savory nightcap or sips of port wine.” A fresh take on clam chowder includes homemade gnocchi and chopped quahogs, and their Pork Trio is prepared differently nightly to make use of whole hogs, sourced from Watson Farm in Jamestown. A wine list with hard-to-find selections from Europe and the Americas is carefully chosen to pair well with their entrees. “The Schloss Rosé and Banyan Gewurztraminer have been summer favorites,” Alicia recommends. Come fall, watch for the start of Sunday Brunch starring Bloody Marys. Wakefield, DuckPressRI.com
