FAUX REAL The Accidental Farmgirl’s wreaths welcome each season with style Jessica Billings began making wreaths as a way to experiment with ideas that her aunt found on Pinterest. Before long, this pastime blossomed into The Accidental Farmgirl Co., a thriving home accent business with over 20,000 followers on Instagram. Jessica’s handcrafted farmhouse goods include wreaths laden with realistic-looking faux fruit and florals, all created in her Exeter home studio. Drawing inspiration from visuals and textures, Jessica also relies on the changing seasons to inspire her designs, and incorporates

elements like pomegranates and red apples in the fall and winter, and lemons and green apples in the spring and summer. This autumnal choice, the Velvet Pumpkin Wreath, features large artichokes, green velvet pumpkins, lotus pods, peonies, and anemones. Jessica believes that every front door should have a wreath, but she also suggests hanging them from mirrors, above mantles, on big chalkboards, or to accent any blank space in need of a little decorative touch. Healthcare Hub Medical centers expand along South County Trail, bringing care close to home

Good news for residents of Washington County: South County Trail in East Greenwich is emerging as a medical hub. These aren’t just ancillary, part-time offices to their Providence counterparts – they’re full-service facilities. No longer will you be forced to drive “all the way” to Providence, find and pay for a parking space at Rhode Island Hospital, and then figure out where to go once you’re there. From a business perspective, opening medical offices in East Greenwich makes sense because more people live in the southern part of the state. According to the US Census Bureau, Rhode Island’s total population increased by about 5.6 percent between 1980 and 2018. In contrast, Washington County grew by 36

14

SORhodeIsland.com • November 2019

percent for the same period. David Paller, chief financial officer at University Orthotics, Inc., cites population shift as a factor in the practice’s decision to expand there. “In 2017, we relocated to a larger space on South County Trail to better serve our growing patient population,” he says. “We are currently constructing a parking garage at this location to better accommodate our needs and provide the best patient experience possible.” University Surgical Associates is increasing its presence, as well. The organization held a grand opening celebration at its 1407 South County Trail location on September 17 and the Center for Breast Care at University Surgical Associates is one of the on-site practices. Dr.

Theresa Graves, the center’s director and an East Greenwich resident, is excited about the new office and what it will mean for patients. She cites the immediate proximity of imaging services and medical oncology, among other specialties, as a convenience and benefit for patients who can receive much of their care closer to home. “With a patient that has a breast cancer diagnosis, for instance, I can evaluate them initially in my office, bring them to the multidisciplinary clinic at Rhode Island Hospital and operate there, and then bring the follow-up care back to their community,” she explains. And, the parking is free. USASurg.org -Ed McCarthy

Healing Properties In the middle of a cannabidiol revolution, a CBD store thrives in Warwick

Michael was able to donate $1,400 to the muscular dystrophy association in June

Michael Lanoue personally greets his customers as they come through the door. He spends much of his day consulting with beginners, people who have never tried CBD products in their lives. Over and over, he describes the creams and tinctures that line his shelves, their intended doses and effects. The new store has fresh carpet and furniture, and soothing music plays in the background, much like a spa. “Regardless of whether someone buys it or not,” says Michael, “I want people to leave more educated.” Michael grew up in Rhode Island and spent 12 years in Louisiana. “I still have a Southern heart,” he says. Most of his career has been as a direct sales consultant. But everything changed about a year ago, when his wife Eva suffered a freak car

accident. In its wake, Eva struggled with pain, anxiety, and arduous injections in her back. Traditional medicine didn’t resolve the issues – but CBD products did. After only a few months of salves and oils, Eva’s symptoms subsided. The CBD industry has flowered across the country, and businesses like The CBD Store have popped up across Rhode Island. Contrary to popular belief, CBD has no psychotropic effects; cannabidiol is related to recreational marijuana, but its effects are strictly therapeutic. “It’s a botanical medicine,” says Michael. “Customers are using it for a wide range of issues. The change in people’s lives has been the best part of the adventure.” Michael’s demeanor is serious and driven; he recognizes that CBD is unregulated

and rigorously vets his suppliers, selling only pharmaceutical-grade products. As he explains the different options, Michael speaks with urgent authority – and customers listen. Meanwhile, business is going very well; Michael recently donated $800 to VFW Post 183, and he plans to become heavily involved in the Warwick community. There are already plans to open a second CBD Store in Newport. Given the long history of cannabis prohibition, CBD proponents have weathered some suspicion. But no one would mistake the intent of The CBD Store, and Michael says his neighbors on Post Road have welcomed the new business with open arms. “There’s always skepticism in every new industry,” he says. “But for me, that’s died down.” TheCBDStoreRI.com -Robert Isenberg

Goooo, Fall! Rhody’s own Patriots cheerleaders share their fave things about autumn Being a New England Patriots cheerleader isn’t all glamor and glory: workouts, practices, and performances involve vast commitments of time and energy, especially during football season. But the four Rhode Islanders on the 2019-20 Patriots cheerleading squad still make plenty of time for local fun, even in the fall. -Bob Curley

“One thing that I love about Rhode Island is how small it is. Everything is so close, and only 20 minutes to the beach.” Miss Rhode Island 2018 also likes spending hours playing video games at Dave & Busters in Providence or hiking in Snake Den State Park.

“I love to go apple and pumpkin picking at Rhode Island orchards, head down to Providence at night to see the WaterFire festival, and most of all, I love to go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.”

“I absolutely love the fall in Rhode Island. I enjoy going to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, going through haunted houses, and picking apples and pumpkins. I’m also lucky enough to live in Narragansett during the school year, and the beach is absolutely beautiful to walk on during the fall.”

“I always wanted to attend the Rhode Island Seafood Festival in India Point Park, but I never got the chance. That is definitely on my bucket list.” Other favorites include WaterFire, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, apple and pumpkin picking, and wine tasting.

“I’m surprised I don’t see more plein air painters out here,” says Tim Cranston, as he strolls a pebbled trail through the Bush Hill Nature Reserve. And he’s right: The salt marsh is sunny and scenic, ringed with walls of woods. The trail cuts across moist grassland, a raised earthen causeway. Tim points out some bayberries, once used for candle-making. Nearby, a snowy egret stretches its wings and rises from the tufts. “We want to make Wickford walkable,” says Tim, who is widely considered the town’s “unofficial historian.” “For a village to truly be a village, in my mind, it needs to have people on the street, interacting as a community. And having locations like this, where the community of Wickford can get out in nature, is really what makes this place a special village.”

Scenery aside, Bush Hill is saturated in history. Overlapping with Mill Cove, this land was once the sprawling Spink farm, which raised crops for Wickford townsfolk. Look closely, and you’ll find the ruins of a World War II bomb shelter, a handful of colonial gravestones, and the borrow pit dug to build the causeway. The de Guzman family donated the property to the Land Conservancy of North Kingstown, in memory of beloved local Adelaide Dawson Lynch. Since then, it’s been a public reserve, open to hikers, wildlife, and – in theory – plein air painters. But many residents want to enrich this land, and local organizations are clamoring to add improvements. These touches will be light, such as markers, illustrated by local artists, that point out historical landmarks. The causeway currently has a significant gap, and the new Mill Cove footbridge will

smoothly connect one part of town to the other. “In a 15- or 20-minute walk,” says Tim, “you’re going to be able to span centuries of history here. You’re going to see how this piece of property was an integral part of the overall fabric of the community.” Last month, the Land Conservancy hosted a benefit to raise the $65,000 required to build the bridge. The Conservancy works closely with Historic Wickford, also known as HistWick, which runs walking tours, among other activities. “In this day and age, so many people don’t have that opportunity to connect to the place that they live,” says Tim, whose ancestors arrived in Wickford in 1630. “This is a groundswell of local people doing this. You can’t ask for a better project.” LCNK.org -Robert Isenberg

The Bike Stop Cafe

Wood Fired Pizza and More We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it!

What it is: An American restaurant specializing in comfort food. Find wood fired pizza (even a gluten-free, vegan option), fish tacos, pulled pork, homemade mac and cheese, and more.

What makes it a Rhody Gem? While welcoming, the Bike Stop feels like a locals in-the-know spot. A wood fired oven right in the dining room adds cozy appeal and provides an almost floor-show experience when food is paddled in and out. According to owner Casey Montanari, the oven is made from hand split rocks and includes a piece of the sea wall destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. “Kevin Andrews, who handcrafted both of our ovens, carved a man he named Earl out of a piece of stone from the wall. Earl actually sits on our pizza oven greeting our customers when they enter.”

Where to find it: With barely any outdoor signage this place is easy to miss, especially since the address is Boon Street but the entrance is on Congdon, housed in a long building across from a park and around the corner from Crazy Burger.

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice Everyone’s favorite squash finds its way into three inventive Rhode Island beers

Like football and fleece, pumpkin beer is an autumnal rite. A handful of national breweries dominate the market, and most people splurge on, say, the Pumking Imperial Ale from Southern Tier. But before you grab that pricey four-pack, consider one of Rhode Island’s masterful pumpkin-flavored brews. With their imaginative ingredients and clever names, these beers riff on the traditional flavors – and offer a crisp new experience.

NAME: Blood Orange Bushido Ale MAKER: Revival Brewing Company DESCRIPTION: An inventive blend of ginger, lemongrass, pumpkin, and blood oranges, Bushido also uses the same yeast as sake rice wine, hence the reference to the Japanese honor system. Meet the winemakers turning South County into our own Napa

By Robert Isenberg Photography by Wolf Matthewson South County boasts five wineries, and no two are alike. Far from the epic estates of the Tuscan hills, our wineries are small and scrappy. Some grow grapes on the premises, others import their grapes, and one doesn’t use grapes at all. For each, the experience is unique – a backwoods escape, a main street storefront, a classic New England farm – and you’ll find plenty of surprises. You might call South County the un-Napa. Our growing season may be short, but our terroir, or combination of conditions, is just as dynamic as New Brunswick or the Finger Lakes, famous regions with similar seasons. Each autumn, local wine-makers overcome the challenges of a northeastern harvest and ferment their juice to perfection. For wine enthusiasts, fall is the perfect time to take a drive in the country, stop at local tasting rooms, and sample the fruits of their labor. Here is a glimpse at our local establishments – and the vintners who make them so special.

For decades, Leyden Farm was known for its Christmas trees. Four generations of Leydens have loved the holiday season, and they still grow ranks of trees on their West Greenwich property. There’s only one problem with this niche industry: You make all your sales in a few breakneck weeks. The rest of the year is spent managing the land and biting fingernails, hoping this coming December will be profitable. “We decided we had to do something else with the farm,” says co-owner Maureen Leyden, who married into the Christmas tree dynasty. She and her husband Jack considered several ideas. They had made wine before and enjoyed the process – but could they really establish a full-on winery? “When you meet winemakers,” says Maureen, “you find that they’ve either dabbled with wine in the kitchen, or they like the science.” The Leydens appear to be both. In 2010, they dove in. They started to grow grape vines. They installed a processing facility in an old barn. They set up a tasting room. Outside, there’s a sprawling patio with Adirondack chairs and room for a party tent. The parking lot is sizable, but on weekends, visitors may struggle to find a free spot. The town doesn’t allow weddings at Leyden Farm, but they host every other kind of party, and it’s hopping. The place has become so popular that they’ve built two massive new additions – an expanded production facility and a voluminous new tasting room, which will hold at least 50 guests. Along both structures, an extended porch will overlook the bucolic landscape. Instead of building a kitchen, visitors are welcome to bring their own food. The venue will be open yearround. Leyden is now a busy place, long before and after Christmas. Not bad for a business that has only ever advertised on Groupon. Maureen credits her daughter, Caitlin, with helping shape the propel the business. “We couldn’t do it without her,” she says. West Greenwich, LeydenFarm.com Leyden Farm Vineyard and Winery

Gooseneck has rewritten a lot of rules: First, they harvest their grapes from vineyards all over the world. Second, the company is still considered local, because Paul Fede and Liana Buonnano are based in Wickford. Gooseneck is known for its Brut Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc, wines as sunny as the Rhode Island coast in summer. For the first few years, Gooseneck was available only in stores and restaurants; there was no physical vineyard to visit. But in July, Paul and Liana rewrote that rule, too: Their Wickford headquarters have transformed into a refined little tasting room on Brown Street. Based in a handsome colonial storefront, Gooseneck now entertains guests with samples and events – and special wines are even made on the premises. “Here, we make very exclusive, small-batch wines,” says Liana. “It’s like an experimental laboratory.” By complete coincidence, their landlord is Frank Dizoglio, who owns Jamestown Vineyards. This fact eluded them until the day they signed the lease. While Frank isn’t permitted to make wine on the island, he provides grapes to a range of vintners, including his tenants. From this raw material, Liana and Paul have been making riesling, much of it in large-format “Jeroboam” bottles. The tasting room can accommodate 16 people, and visitors have traveled from as far as Alabama. Local educator June Cerrito hosts events, and guests try wines, cheeses, and truffles. “People always said, ‘Can we visit? Can we visit?’” says Liana. “It’s nice that they finally can.” Wickford, GooseneckVineyards.com

You really couldn’t find a more pastoral place to stay: a farmhouse built in 1875, standing on picture-perfect Route 1A, just up the road from Westerly. The bed and breakfast has a range of renovated, antique-style suites, and each one has its own distinguished name – the Seaview King Bedroom, or the Governor Ward Suite, named after the property’s most famous proprietor. Just outside, you’ll find one of the largest Norway Maple trees in the country. Drive a half-mile, and you reach the ocean. Joe and Gail Sharry opened Langworthy as a romantic getaway for travelers in 2000. The winery license took two years, and the Sharrys spent that time perfecting their wines and offering samples to guests. Langworthy became an official farm winery in 2004. Over the next 15 years, the Sharrys have developed an astonishing portfolio, from their Avondale Cabernet Merlot to their Shelter Harbor Chardonnay and Rhody Riesling. As a boutique operation, Langworthy specializes in tastings and gift bottles, and drop-ins are encouraged, whether visitors are staying the night or not. In the warmer months, guests can lounge on the porch and savor their glasses within view of the vineyard. Westerly, LangworthyFarm.com

Rick Dyer loves a good project. He’s refurbishing a boat. He operates a greenhouse. He’s worked on experimental aircraft. Professionally, he’s a “network architect” for GTECH, a job too abstract to describe here. But his latest project is personal: Rick is building a winery from the ground up. By next summer, WinterHawk Vineyards will be an attractive two-story structure set in the evergreen woods of West Kingston, not far from the Yawgoo ski slopes. Near the construction site, rows of vines have been maturing. While this location may seem remote, Rick grew up on precisely these sylvan acres. “It’s small, intimate,” says Rick. “I thought, this will make a nice, small wedding venue.” He laughs. “As a friend of mine pointed out, this is the perfect second wedding venue. It’s not the 300-people-going-crazy kind of thing.” On the first floor, Rick will ferment and age his wines. Visitors can walk through three enormous garage doors and see his process firsthand. Up above, a tasting room and entertainment venue will open onto the lawn and forest. He’s already hosted events, and as the structure approaches completion, he expects his calendar to gradually fill up with weddings and parties. Rick’s own grapes aren’t quite ready to cultivate, but his wine-making is already an industrious operation, thanks to imported ingredients. “Currently I’m bringing in grapes from California and Chile,” says Rick. “Just till my vines start producing.” West Kingston, Facebook: WinterHawk Vineyards

Recently, a married couple came into Tapped Apple for the first time. They found a handsome tasting room, recently doubled in size. They saw the sparkling silver fermentation tanks. The husband tried a glass, but the wife hesitated. “I’m not going to like it,” she said. But co-owner John Wiedenheft IV insisted. He offered her a glass of Watch Hill White, and the wife was startled. “That’s amazing!” she exclaimed. “I thought apples had sugar!” “Well,” rejoined John, “so do grapes.” The patrons at Tapped Apple sometimes require this extra step – to understand that wine can also be made from apples. “The presumption is that apples equal a sweet, sugary product,” John says. Making wine started with John’s father, John Wiedenheft III, in 2003. Friends started to catch on to the elaborate hobby, insisting that the Wiedenhefts start their own winery. His son, John IV, had been working as a casino croupier, but he also became skilled in the winemaking craft. The expense of shipping West Coast grapes didn’t appeal to them, so they found a local solution: apples. The process is in many ways identical, and the results – as that couple discovered – are shockingly similar. Today, four generations of Wiedenhefts all take part in Tapped Apple, including John IV’s son, John V. The tasting room is located in the middle of downtown Westerly, a deep space that could easily be misidentified as a bar. Until recently, the Wiedenhefts were processing 6,000 gallons of wine in full view of the patrons; after renovations, the aging and bottling equipment has been mostly moved off-site, replaced by comfortable seating and a modest art gallery. “The response has been great,” says John IV, who is constantly booking business meetings and baby showers. “People love this space.” Westerly, TappedApple.com

Mad About Plaid

Beyond flannel ways to bring the iconic checks into your life If a season could have a signature pattern, plaid (proper name: tartan) would be autumn’s. While we may think of hipsters and big brands sporting patterns of interlocking stripes – lumberjack style and Burberry, anyone? – plaid actually originated in Scotland as a way to identify one’s region or clan. Today, whether it’s a preppy kilt, punk flannel tied around the waist, or underneath a vest for an outdoorsy look, plaid is loaded with character. Infuse your surroundings with some campfire-meets-classic clever accessories and home goods available from shops around the state.

A family trades the Bay State for a home by the Bay

Ken and Beth enjoyed living in downtown Boston with their two young sons. They had a nice home with plenty of interior space, but as their boys grew they began to crave a neighborhood setting and a big backyard. The pair began their search around Massachusetts with a wishlist that also included an easy commute and new construction. Nothing was fitting the bill – that is, until one afternoon Ken was fishing in Rhode Island and had an aha! moment: What about Rhode Island? He proposed the idea to Beth and a year later, the couple closed on a lot in East Greenwich and began the process of building a home. Once a design plan was selected, Ken and

They knew that they wanted to move in day-one and start enjoying.” Beth likes her home interior to take a cue from its surroundings so while the darker woods and red-and-brown colorway worked for Boston, she wanted something lighter and airier for the new home. “Given the realities that we’re just a few miles from the water but located in a spot surrounded by farms and woods, we tried to find the right balance. Thus, Coastal Farmhouse was what we called our style!” Janelle and her team were key drivers in the

decision process and well aware that the family wanted a comfortable home with rooms for playing, relaxing, and entertaining. “We like neutrals and softer colors but didn’t want a house just gray or beige,” Beth explains. “Blakely was able to provide us with options that were in our comfort zone but still add pops of color, which felt modern and fun.” “For us, it’s about the airy, open feel. Rhode Island is a supercool, diverse state in terms of landscape, and you can drive 10 miles and be looking at an entirely different habitat. We’d like to think that we designed and decorated our home to have that same type of feel,” says Beth. “Our friends have commented that our décor style flows throughout the house, but that each room has a little something different to offer. That’s how we feel about Rhode Island!”

My personal style is preppy with an urban vibe. I favor clean lines, great fit, and excellent quality. I love the color palette of black, navy, camel, white, and gray, with accessories to add pops of color. In the summer, I ditch the black and opt for fun Lily Pulitzer pieces that I can mix with navy or white. I feel comfortable in many styles as long as the fit is excellent and flattering. In the fall and winter, I love pairing dark skinny jeans with a super-soft cashmere v-neck sweater, and ankle booties. For work, I think a blazer elevates any outfit. I also love a great dress paired with tall boots. On the weekend, I lounge in cozy leggings and an oversized Red Sox or Patriots hoodie. I always wear my wedding ring and engagement rings, a little lip gloss, mascara, and a spritz of Jo Malone perfume. And you’ll always find me with a bag; even when I’m dressed casually, I carry a great bag. Garden City is my favorite shopping destination in Rhode Island. I love everything about it! I also love online shopping at Everlane and ASOS. There are so many things to love about Jamestown. I love Beavertail State Park – the gorgeous views and peaceful landscapes are like meditation. Dutch Harbor for Tallulah’s tacos (summer only) and beautiful sunsets. And Jamestown Outdoors for the seasonal sales. The people in the community are kind, supportive, engaged, and they all love our island. It’s such a special place that words (even for someone like me in publishing) can’t quite capture. My husband and twins inspire me to love fiercely, live curiously, and work passionately. Reading a good book thrills me and going to NYC energizes me. My daily gratitude practice motivates me to always look for magic. When we pay attention to the details, there is always a gift to be grateful for in our lives.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Jahmu is spreading awareness about natural healing, one cup of tea at a time When Jessica Filkins was in her last year at college, she experienced terrible stomach issues due to antibiotics. After substantial weight loss, a lot of pain, and some failed remedies, Jessica discovered the healing powers of natural ingredients on a yoga retreat in Indonesia. During her four-month stay, local women gave her a medicinal drink that had turmeric, ginger, raw honey, and sometimes a raw egg that soothed her stomach. Her all-natural recovery and passion for health and wellness inspired Jessica to start Jahmu, a turmeric tea company based out of North Kingstown and sold in Newport. The Jahmu line offers instant tea mixes (both caffeinated and non-caffeinated) with the mission of spreading awareness of the healing properties of turmeric. The teas are meant to be medicinal yet tasty with flavors like chai, golden milk (a turmeric/ginger mixture with added coconut sugar), matcha, and chocolate. Add this instant tea mix to a hot

cup of water or steaming milk, and you’re hit with the warm, fragrant aromas similar to pumpkin spice (cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, etc.) or a chai latte. Each herbal concoction is meticulously measured to make sure there is enough turmeric and ginger for you to receive their health benefits, but not enough so that they are overpowering. Turmeric, a deep orange root herb, is “one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory herbs we have on this planet,” says Jessica. This healing property no doubt has worked wonders with her patrons. When she first began selling her products, customers would share how much the tea had helped their health. “The majority of people use it as a natural painkiller for arthritis. It’s been particularly effective with arthritis in the hands...but also it’s good for knees and hips and all the joints!” Jahmu products are available at A Market and Nature’s Goodness in Newport. Breakfast Club

If you’ve been on a “wild goose chase” for a hospitable, satisfying breakfast in southern Rhody, look no further. For the past 15 years The Cooked Goose in Westerly has attracted a loyal following of locals and summer tourists who don’t mind waiting to enjoy a hearty breakfast in a rustic, country setting across from the Rhode Island/Connecticut line. The place was crowded (as usual) one recent Sunday with a 40-minute wait to be seated and the dining room was abuzz. Wood beams, whitewashed wainscoting, and a stone fireplace set the stage for a delicious experience. You might mistake owners Andrew Nathan and wife Jennifer Jacobs for waitstaff as they scurry around serving, picking up plates, and seating people. “We do everything because we love to,” says Jennifer, who also cooks prepared food for takeout. Formerly a “service station” in the 1930s, in some respects the breakfast spot still is. The staff is friendly, attentive, and accommodating

in the 50-seat dining room with counter service and seasonal outdoor seating, where dogs are allowed. I left Sadie, my rescue dog, at home with a delectable elk antler. Occasionally I indulge in classic eggs benedict, that are eaten best with crunchy English muffins, Canadian bacon, and perfectly poached eggs topped with rich, flavorful hollandaise. The Goose’s “traditional” version – a nicely poached egg and thin slice of country ham on a thick, soft slice of Italian toast topped with a savory hollandaise – was not quite classic, but tasty nonetheless. My guests and I also tried the lobster benedict with lemon, tarragon, and small chunks of lobster. The dish was delicious with a harmonious melding of flavors. Our plate-sized, blueberry buttermilk pancakes were fine, but the daily special, an apple fritter with fresh whipped cream and maple syrup, was crunchy and sweet! Most egg-based dishes include home fries: chunks of new potatoes If you like your coffee strong,

order an espresso or cappuccino. I returned the next day, surprised by another wait, albeit much shorter, so I sat at the counter, where I met a Springfield, Massachusetts couple, who’d been surfcasting for stripers around Misquamicut. They love the atmosphere and are regulars when in town. They offered a taste of their apple walnut coffee cake, one of the best things I’d eaten yet, until I met Leslie Montagne from Matunuck, another regular, who offered a taste of her cream of wild mushroom soup and broccoli cheddar quiche – both hot, delicious, and satisfying. “This is where I’ll eat if I’m in the area,” she said. “The food is fresh and the staff cares.” Charlestown residents Lorén Spears and her husband, Robin, both of the Narragansett Tribal Nation, are also regulars. Lorén, executive director of Exeter’s Tomaquag Museum, enjoys the vanilla almond French toast, which she special orders gluten- and dairy-free. “They mix the batter individually for each

Farmstand to Table With a long list of items harvesting in fall, eating fresh isn’t just a summer thing

By Elyse Major

Wasn’t it just yesterday that you could channel your inner Ina Garten, visit a farmers market, and let the bright offerings displayed on tables and beneath tents inspire your dinner? Insert record scratch: Autumn is arguably an even better time to do plein air shopping – temperatures are generally lower (although, this is New England, afterall) and while the goods may have changed, there is still plenty of vibrant variety to be had. “Fall is one of the best times to shop at the market,” says Leigh Vincola, Farmers Market Program Manager at Farm Fresh Rhode Island. “The cooler days allow for another crop of tender greens as well as the late season crops like winter squash and root vegetables.” Here’s a bunch of our favorite fall things, beyond pumpkins and apples.

CARROTS This sturdy salad standby is always great as a vehicle for dips and hummus, but carrots are also great for soups. Boiled along with a potato or two, mashed and combined with a few cups of stock, and topped with sprigs of dill, you have yourself a comforting dish.

MUSHROOMS Considered a “superfood” for their nutritional value and benefits, mushrooms are much more than just a pizza topping or vessel for breadcrumbs. Try them sautéed or roasted in butter or olive oil with a few lemon squeezes and herbs like thyme or rosemary, for a savory side dish.

RADISHES Good ol’ radishes are a cool season crop and should be plentiful all autumn long. Sliced, they make a colorful and crunchy addition to salads, but chopped and sauteed in olive oil, they’re a splendid alternative to home fries.

Normally when one hears the term “midlife crisis,” one thinks of sadness, an impulsive Harley Davidson purchase, or a wacky “young” haircut. Not for Tom McNiff and Will Tuttle. The two turned their toil and trouble and passion for home brewing into a business: General’s Crossing Brewhouse. Their story is not unlike others who pursue a passion project: Two high-profile professionals tired of the daily white collar grind decide to drop everything to open a bed and breakfast on the side of a snowy mountain. In this case, the duo in question set up shop in Rhode Island’s vacationland, Jamestown. Tom is a lawyer by trade and still has his “day job,” and Will worked in the financial field for many years. The two were both homebrewers who decided they wanted a change in career and something enjoyable to do. “This shop was more fun and satisfying than a convertible Corvette,” jokes Will. The Jamestown residents like to keep

their brews simple and accessible – think honey porters, lagers, Fall IPAs, and brown ale hybrids with lower alcohol content (around 4 to 5 percent). The menu changes once the barrel sells out.“[We have] a more traditional, approachable style that is easy to drink, not too strong so people can have two or three and still be able to walk down to one of Jamestown’s restaurants afterward and have dinner.” General’s Crossing does not use kegs; the beer is tapped right from the barrel so it isn’t at risk for oxygen exposure and flatness. Customers can expect a communal atmosphere with board games, knowledgeable staff, and lively conversation. Will and Tom underscore that if you can “hang” you’re welcome – including your dogs! Patrons can also buy growlers of the pub’s different brews, as well as cans to take home and enjoy. Facebook: General’s Crossing Brewhouse. -Lauren Vella

SoulFresh Proteins makes a superfood better than spinach

At first glance, Larry Dressler’s farm looks like a diabolical science experiment – long, cylindrical blue-green tanks filled with water that tower over the staff. But this is not the work of a mad scientist. The tanks actually contain a weigh protein algae called spirulina that his company SoulFresh Proteins uses to create nutritious snacks. Larry says that he “fell in love” with spirulina, and you can understand why. Spirulina is a superfood. The earthy, powdery substance has “more iron than spinach, more antioxidants than blueberries, more calcium than milk, more beta carotene than carrots, and more protein than steak.” Larry explains that the algae is grown in high pH water and later harvested by extraction and dehydration. Once the product is dehydrated, it is then made into a powder and sold for use. SoulFresh Proteins’s snacks are fruit, nut, and spirulina clusters that have been dehydrated together to form what Larry’s company calls “CrunchLina”. The farm also sells the algae in the form of different flavored powders like pumpkin spice and cinnamon, and the products are ubiquitous. “We have runners, bikers, hikers, campers – and these people will eat it [spirulina] right out of the bag or they’ll put it as a topping on cereal and salads and oatmeal, put it into baked goods and even on ice cream.” Find SoulFresh Protein’s spirulina products at local grocers all over Rhode Island. It’s no secret that the craft trend has swept the beer and coffee industry. Trying locally brewed beer or artisanal-roasted, single-origin, fair-trade coffee has become the preferred hobby of choice among adventurous customers young and old, hipsters and mainstream adherents. But somehow, John Speights and Jason Maranhao carved out a unique niche in this saturated scene. They own Cooper’s Cask Coffee, the only barrel-aged coffee roasters in the state of Rhode Island. What’s barrel-aged coffee? Well, the concept is pretty simple, actually. John and Jason

buy wet spirit barrels (bourbon, whiskey, rum) and they put green, unroasted coffee beans in the barrel to age and soak up the properties of both the spirit and the wood for about 30-40 days. Once the beans have had enough time to marinate, they’re removed from the barrels and roasted at 400 degrees Fahrenheit – a key step that eviscerates the alcohol and leaves the sharp, sweet, non-alcoholic properties left in the product. From there, beans are ground and packaged. Jason and John were coworkers long before they decided to go into business

TERM 2 5-weeks Dec 3-Jan 15 together. The two got the idea for this project when John was ordering “random” coffee in 2014 and he stumbled upon a brand that was barrel aged. When he tried it, he was unsatisfied, and he thought that he could create a coffee that was much better. So, he contacted an old high school friend, the owner of Sons of Liberty, and got an empty “Uprising” whiskey barrel and the experimenting began. By 2016, their business was fully formed. What sets John and Jason’s product apart is the bean. The two buy quality products and they don’t cut corners during their roasting process. Says John, “I think it comes down to the quality of the bean, and I think that’s where a lot of people who do this come up a little bit short. They look at the price of the cost of making the product and you have to buy the barrel, and the space to age it and all this stuff. So they kind of skimp a little on the bean.” The two get their beans from single-origin farms in places like Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia, Rwanda, and South America. The other thing that makes for superb sipping is the depth of flavor Cooper’s Cask creates with the roasting process. Unlike many flavored coffees that have chemical additives (fake flavors), you can taste and smell the authenticity of the whiskey flavor coming through the product when it’s brewed. Jason says it’s like tasting the difference between blueberry flavoring and a real blueberry. Today, the biggest problem Cooper’s Cask faces is their rapid expansion. The East Greenwich company is on their third space in three years with no sign of slowing down. The owners remarked that they’re focused on keeping up with production and expanding into regular, organic single-origin coffee. Find Cooper’s Cask Coffee on Amazon or order off of their website.
