SANTA BY SEA Mr. Claus makes a very Rhody entrance to kick-off the Wickford Village Festival of Lights When you gaze out over the water on the first weekend of December, don’t be surprised to see Santa making the most Rhode Island entrance ever: on the lobster boat Sea Princess, led by his kayaking reindeer, sailing into the Town Dock on Brown Street in Wickford. This unforgettable arrival is the festive topper on the Wickford Village Festival of Lights, an annual holiday celebration this year from November 29 to December 2. This one-of-a-kind incoming has been a tradition for 33 years. When Mr. Claus makes port and sets his shiny, buckled boots on land, the merriment begins: carols, tree lighting, horse-drawn hay rides, parade, hot cocoa and snacks, performances and concerts, and selections
from local merchants and artisans. Wickford Village is a New England time capsule, showcasing historic homes, preserved churches, and antique storefronts. The handsome brick buildings and tree-lined streets provide the picturesque backdrop for this seaside soiree; thousands of holiday lights only add to the charming aesthetic, a colonial winter wonderland. Santa’s quirky entrance and Elf Parade – yes, Elf, so don your red-and-green garb, pointed shoes, and matching ears – adds just the perfect modern – not to mention coastal – twist. Meet the Anchor Bend Team, nationally recognized glassblowers, at The Mills at Shady Lea on December 1 and 2
The Gift Behind the Gifts
Reflect on your holiday shopping. Maybe you’ve bought jewelry. Some pottery. A photo or painting. Did you meet the person who created it – and watch as they demonstrated how they do it? Probably not. You could fight lines again at a bigbox store this season, but the 21st Annual Open Studios at The Mill at Shady Lea offers a special opportunity. The historic space in North Kingstown, which serves as a creative haven for over 40 artists of varying mediums, invites visitors on December 1 and 2 to meet the makers in their studios, view demonstrations of their craft, and finish your holiday shopping with a flourish. Open Studios began as a party, essentially. Neighbors surrounding the Mill were curious about what was going on there, and artists were delighted to showcase their passions and knowledge. While they were
16

welcomed with snacks and conversation, neighbors asked if they could buy some of the artists’ work. Since that first party, Open Studios has become a two-day celebration of a creative, talented community and the art it produces. There’s music, food, and drink, including a gourmet food truck and presentations from participating artists. While the event is free, the Mill encourages visitors to provide canned goods for the North Kingstown Food Bank. “There’s a community there,” says Director Lynn Krim, and it’s a distinct and diverse one. “They work together. They get jobs for one another. They share their successes and their failures. It’s just a wonderful group of people.” Krim says the artists thrive on that inclusive nature and it’s why Open Studios is so different. From glassblowers like the
nationally recognized Anchor Bend Team to clothing dyed from flowers by textile artisan Diane Harrison, the Mill provides a welcoming space for imaginative minds within any medium to collaborate and inspire one another. “Writers, potters, jewelers, antique clock fixers and builders, cartoonists and illustrators, graphic artists, weavers, fiber arts, it just goes on and on,” lists Krim. “That’s why Open Studios is such fun.” Visitors receive a map of the Mill with information on demonstrations, like this year’s special feature by sculptor Elizabeth Lind. Both new and seasoned makers will be highlighted. “There’s nothing like it,” shares Krim, “because they’re not just there selling their wares. They’re telling you who they are and what they’re doing with their life.” TheMillsAtShadyLea.com -Emily Buonaiuto

Helping Hands After tool theft, South County Habitat for Humanity is back on track with housing project thanks to overwhelming local support
The South County community rallied behind SCHH after tool theft, making sure construction was not delayed

Late September, a South County Habitat for Humanity (SCHH) volunteer crew arrived on site in Exeter and found that more than $20,000 worth of tools had been stolen. With two families in need of
a home, and an unexpected financial burden to grapple with, SCHH wasted no time in launching fundraising efforts – and the community wasted no time in joining. Within a month, SCHH received an influx

of support. Volunteers pulled tools from their cars to continue the project. Neighbors dug out unused drills and hammers from their garages to donate. Retired and active contractors offered their time and skilled labor. People donated cash, and those who couldn’t left calls and messages expressing their appreciation for SCHH and its mission. Even local businesses like Stanley Black & Decker of North Kingstown, Cox Communications, Washington Trust Company, and The Town Dock of Narragansett offered what they could. “The community as a whole almost immediately rallied behind [us],” says Executive Director Colin Penney. He admits the theft was both a big shock and a big hit to the organization and its current project, which had already been in the works for a few months to provide housing for two Habitat families. “It goes to show how much people believe in the need for affordable housing and our mission.” The support came not only from Exeter, or even just from South County – Penney says people from all over the state and beyond were reaching out with contributions. “It’s heartwarming,” he shares. On their website, SCHH posted a message of gratitude: “Support for the replacement of our stolen tools has been overwhelming. We would like to sincerely thank all of the individuals and organizations, both near and afar, that have helped us during this time of need. We continue to build, with the goal that everyone deserves a decent place to call home.” After all the generosity of donors, the project is back on track – in fact, it didn’t miss a day. Penney happily assures that it will finish on schedule; the houses should be dried in before the first snow, and the families should be able to move in by March or April of next year. On a chilly December day, there’s nothing quite like curling up under a heavy blanket and getting lost in the pages of a good book. Longtime Wickford resident

ONE VISIT Set in beloved South County, the novel follows main character Skip, an exUS Marine who’s lived in St. Thomas for years managing a luxury charter boat fleet. When a sudden twist of fate occurs, Skip is forced to return home to Rhode Island, a place of debilitating childhood trauma, which is where the story truly begins. Much of Coppa’s inspiration for the novel comes from his Ocean State surroundings – Wickford in particular. He shares how much “[he] loves Narragansett Bay and the people [he] bikes past, sails by, and chats with in the [area],” adding that he had “no shortage of subjects upon which to partially base the characters in [the] story.” The novel describes the quintessential South County “swampers” and fishermen, much of whom spend their days digging steamers, bull-raking littlenecks, lobstering, or dragging for scallops. He discloses, “If you live in South County, you won’t have to look far to see a John, Ed, or Skip (the main characters) working by the shore, running a sawmill in the woods, or trying to make a living on a small family farm. They’re the people I love and love to write about.”Coppa has lived in Rhode Island for most of his life, sharing a fondness for the land and water just as most natives do. He expresses how easy it is to write about the things he knows and says that he relates to what he sees and remembers seeing. “At nearly 70 years of age, I have seen and remembered a lot,” he explains. “The book just kind of fell into place because it had been percolating in my mind for so long.” After what seemed like 17 years in the making of Second Chances, Coppa is excited to get on the water and travel whenever he can, saying, “It is now my turn to share the stories of adventure.” -Caroline Boyle

As the only Montessori school in New England accredited by both the Association of Independent Schools in New England and American Montessori Society, Quest Montessori School in Narragansett is used to being a trailblazer. And with its recent expansion, it shows no signs of slowing down. “We have worked really hard, so it’s really gratifying,” says recently appointed Head of School Katherine Bowen, reflecting on the school’s recent accreditations
and developments to come. The Montessori system is a holistic approach to education that fosters the whole child: academically, physically, emotionally, socially, and creatively. In 2002, Quest was established by a group of passionate parents looking to bring the Montessori approach to southern Rhode Island. Today, the original families are very still much involved; in fact, Bowen is one of the founding members. Last year, Quest broke ground on their

Quest Montessori’s newest addition will serve as a multi-purpose gathering space, not only for the school, but for the community
new building, designed by local contractor South County Post & Beam. The multi-purpose addition is accompanied by a greenhouse and garden beds, which together implement the school’s new agricultural learning program geared towards middle schoolers. “It’s such a critical time of growth,” explains Bowen, detailing the alternative approach Quest takes to educate and motivate that age group. Their method focuses on more movement and handson work, which inspired the agricultural program to let kids engage with the land. In light of these developments, Director of Advancement Susannah Blair shares, “We were eager to share the new space, so a community partnership made sense.” That partnership came in the form of another first, not only for the school, but for the town: the establishment of the first winter farmers market in Narragansett. The market, hosted by Coastal Growers, will also act as an extension of the middle school’s micro-business program, which encourages students to create and execute their own business plan; they’ll get the chance to work at the market and tend to the gardens and greenhouse. “Quest’s commitment to the study and preservation of local agriculture aligns itself nicely with Coastal Growers’ commitment to provide RI grown and harvested fresh produce, along with high quality, locally produced food and textile products,” says Coastal Growers Market Manager Katherine Fotiades. “[We] feel that by working together, we can support, grow, and strengthen our local food system.” Blair is happy to say that the local community, by which the school is massively supported, is excited for the start of the market and Quest’s expansion. She gushes, “People are really, really jazzed about it.” The market will run November 3-May 4 on Saturdays from 9am-12pm. QuestSchool.org - Megan Schmit

The Collective isn’t your typical bookstore or library – it’s both, and more
In the quiet village of Peace Dale, one smallbut-mighty shop is taking steps to connect the community to greater action. The unsuspecting storefront combines a home to a library, bookstore, and community space – and then asks you to be a part of the dialogue. Between the four founding co-owners – Tara Apperson, Brooke Conley, Maggie Kain, and Sarah Markey – the idea of opening a bookstore only seemed to scratch the surface of what would become an open invitation for South County progressives and people beyond to connect with each other. “We saw a need in the community for space to gather, to talk and have dialogue about issues that are important to them, and to learn about issues from others,” Conley explains. Upon entering, you will find the shelves lined with books on racial justice, environmental justice, political theory, and civil rights. You also don’t have to look very hard to find the classics and even new authors from both mainstream and alternative publishers. Locals can even rent out The Collective for their own book clubs and movie nights or use the space to connect fellow Rhode Islanders to working on grassroots political action.
Peace Dale called for space to engage community members, and The Collective was quick to draw the neighborhood in with its workshops, rare and progressive literature, and a staff that is just as eager to learn as the individuals that visit. Sure, The Collective does not mind starting these kinds of conversations, but they are also just as receiving of what the people of Rhode Island need: “Our mission statement has naturally evolved over the past year because of those connections we have formed and the ideas that supporters and customers have brought us,” Conley adds. Celebrating their one-year this November, The Collective shows no signs of stopping its evolution in Peace Dale. Supporting groups like AMOR, COYOTE RI, and The FANG Collective, its co-owners are thrilled with the way the space has evolved to meet the needs of the community. “In many cases, people are looking for ways to take action around a variety of issues, such as immigrants’ rights, education, and reproductive rights,” Conley explains, “The Collective is a space that brings diverse voices together.” To sign up for their mailing list or find out what is going on in the community, visit TheCollective401.com. -Ava Callery

Warwick Symphony Orchestra pulls out all the stops for 2018-2019 season by Alyssa Anderson Photography by Mike Braca
T
he words “symphony” and “accessible” don’t always go together. Often, tickets to see live orchestral performances can be quite expensive and the atmosphere can feel a little elitist. That’s why the Warwick Symphony Orchestra is so special. Started in 1966 by George Low as a partnership with Warwick Public Schools, the Warwick Symphony Orchestra is all about community. Most of its members are adult amateurs from the area, with a large portion of students from the University of Rhode Island to also account for. Though they previously performed within central Rhode Island, they’re expanding outwards to other cities and towns thanks to Musical Director Catherine Gagnon. Gagnon came to Rhode Island in the mid-1990s to attend URI and graduated with a degree in music

education. Her main instrument was the French horn, but as a music teacher, it was also important to master other instruments, like the piano. In 2011, she became the Music Director of the WSO and started to really shake things up. Helping other musicians around the state was crucial to Gagnon, and as a URI alumna, it was important to her to work with students from the university to create new things. Commissioning new pieces from students and collaborating with other musicians are two of her favorite things about working with the WSO. “I really wanted to bring something new to our audiences, something they hadn’t heard before,” says Gagnon. In keeping with that strong spirit of collaboration, the WSO has commissioned Katherine Loo, a student composer at URI, to write an original piece in memory of Ernest Nordman, a late viola player who belonged to the group for over 30 years. The piece is written for four violas and will be performed during their early December concert series, along with a few arrangements for brass and percussion by Bach and Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn – a complicated choral and orchestral piece never before attempted by the group. Two different chorus groups from URI will join them for the performances on December 1 and 2 at the URI Fine Arts Center and St. Timothy’s Church. The concerts will also feature a few holiday pieces. “Y’know, ‘tis the season!” Gagnon laughs. Speaking of churches like St. Timothy’s, Gagnon also made a push to not only see the orchestra perform in more cities and towns throughout the state, but also to see them perform in more traditional concert venues, such as the Gamm Theatre, now in Warwick, and the Cold Spring Band Shell in North Kingstown. “You limit your audience a little when you only perform in churches or senior centers [because] there are people who don’t want to go in those sorts of buildings,” she says. “We’re really working on expanding our audiences. I’ve told them that we’d go to a factory and perform for the people who work there. We want to reach new ears.” Gagnon and the WSO accomplish this in many ways. First, they keep their ticket prices low. Live symphony concerts and orchestral performances can be very expensive. Theater tickets often sell out very quickly and become more expensive as the performance date draws closer. Tickets to a Broadway show

can easily break $200, especially if it’s a popular hit like Hamilton or Wicked. Gagnon and the organization have worked hard to preserve their affordable prices: $15 general admission tickets, $12 senior tickets, and free entry for kids under the age of twelve. “I’ve seen parents bring two, three, four, five kids to a performance. They bring their own kids and their kids’ friends to see something they maybe wouldn’t normally be exposed to. I don’t foresee ticket prices going up anytime in the future.” The WSO also wants to see their hard-working orchestra perform for the community. Classical music isn’t always appealing to everyone; it can be overly complex or hard to comprehend for those who don’t have a very broad understanding of music theory and composition. That’s why

the WSO is putting on a spring series called “A Night at the Movies” that will feature music from the very popular continuation of the Harry Potter Series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Grease, Chicago, Forrest Gump, and The Wizard of Oz to name a few. The series will also feature popular classical music used in film and television that audiences will probably be familiar with, such as The William Tell Overture. One of the other changes Gagnon made was to make sure the WSO wasn’t playing strictly in central Rhode Island, and to try performing everywhere around the state. “It’s no big deal for us to bring 50 chairs and set up in the middle of the zoo!” So that’s exactly what they’re going to do. From North Kingstown to Sakonnet Vineyard,
the WSO will be traveling around the state the summer of 2019 to perform what they’re calling “Pop Up Concerts” – free concerts in various venues where they’ll play everything from Broadway to patriotic music to Top 40 Hits. “Each one will be slightly different,” Gagnon assures. The WSO is attempting to change the view on symphonic music and make it more inviting to everyone. Gagnon and her fellow colleagues and musicians are dedicated to performing for the community, in a way they can appreciate and experience fully. “This season has more concerts than previous seasons,” Gagnon explains. “The orchestra has really grown and is participating in increasingly more challenging musical productions.” WSORI.org

How buying fresh and local is good for Rhode Island Christmas tree growers
By Elyse Major Photography by Mackenzie Bremges
ach year, Carlos and Lorraine Miranda of Fall River, Massachusetts, cross the state line to Rhode Island on a quest to tag the family Christmas tree. The couple began this tradition, which now includes grown daughters Kelsey and Stephanie, early in their marriage. “We walk up and down the rows looking for our ‘perfect tree.’ It has to be around seven feet tall and just as round, very full. We bring bows with us to mark potential trees. After we find the tree, [it gets] tagged with our information and we head back to the office to pay and set our pick up date. The trip back is usually the hayride,” says Lorraine. But just how are there enough trees each year for families like the Mirandas? It’s all about planning and planting, and you don’t exactly go into the business overnight. For every tree cut, most farmers will plant at least two seedlings flanking the stump, and it can take up to 15 years for a tree to reach the coveted retail size height of seven feet. “It’s a continuous cycle of planting and it takes longer than people realize,” says third-generation farmer Sarah Partyka of The Farmer’s Daughter in South Kingstown. “My father has a big love of Christmas trees and has been growing them for nearly 50 years,” she says of the business, which includes a cut-your-own plantation along with fields of pre-cut trees. Dave Henry started growing Christmas trees at age 12 on his family’s farm as part of the Future Farmers of America program under the tutelage of John Leyden, of Big Leyden’s Tree Farm in West Greenwich. Since 1851, the Henry family has been working the land, first as a dairy farm run by his grandfather and later his father’s poultry farm. When Dave took over, he figured Christmas tree farming could be a nice way to be outside but not be all-consuming like other crops. “You plant a first batch of trees, divide the land, and keep planting until you get to the point where you’re marketing them, and rotate,” says Henry. “Trees are like people, they grow fast, tall and wide.” While some Christmas tree farms grow other crops during the year, Henry sells insurance. Henry’s Tree Farm has become a famous spot for Instagrammers hoping to catch a glimpse at preppy entrepreneurs Kiel James Patrick and Sarah Vickers – better known by their brand KJP – who were married in a simple but elegant December ceremony at the property, documented on Vicker’s blog “Classy Girls Wear Pearls”. “The endless rows of evergreens make it such a magical place to bundle up and walk through on a chilly winter afternoon. We look forward to our time there every year,” wrote Vickers. Stunning snaps of the couple beneath a birch arbor adorned with roping, pine cones, and flowers, and a backdrop of bushy green Christmas trees perfectly strung with bulb lights, have been shared by national magazines including Glamour, House Beautiful, and Brides. Henry was honored to be part of the pair’s impromptu nuptials on his property; caught off-guard, he attended the ceremony in his “dirty old barn jacket.” While his farm is now Insta-famous, Henry insists it isn’t a wedding venue. According to the Rhode Island Christmas Tree Growers Association (RICTGA), Christmas trees are a six-million-dollar business in Rhode Island. Top selling tannenbaums in the Ocean State are Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Noble Fir, Scotch Pine, Virginia Pine, and White Pine, but offerings vary by farm and can include types such as Canaan Fir. As a renewable resource, the RICTGA notes that the crop is an important part of the state’s agricultural industry. “What I love the best is that we’re growing a sustainable renewable product and the joy we see. People supporting us and they’re getting a wonderful fresh product to take home that is local. Cut your own is great – it’s a family tradition, everyone comes out, even the dog,” says Partyka.

T
TAGGING Offered by some Christmas tree farms, tagging or pre-tagging is when you visit during fall and are led to the lot of living trees and can designate the one you wish to have cut down at a later time. Tagging season varies from farm to farm and can begin in October or November. The return visit happens after Thanksgiving. As excited as you are to bring your tree home, you don’t want to risk having it dry out before Christmas Day.
BEFORE YOUR VISIT Before visiting a farm, it is best to call ahead for details such as hours, are credit cards accepted, and are there public restrooms. Many farms are also on social media, so check for recent updates and special activities, like hayrides or baked goods. Some farms provide a bow saw for customers to cut trees themselves. If you’re up to the challenge, bring a pair of heavy-duty work gloves and goggles. Consider bringing a blanket or plastic tarp along to protect the surface of your car’s roof. Also pack bungee cords, straps, and/or rope to secure the tree to your car’s rooftop. Remember, you won’t have farmhands helping you to take the tree off of your car back at home – or lugging it up three flights of steps to your apartment – so be sure to enlist assistance from friends and neighbors ahead of time as needed.
AT THE FARM You may want to ask for your fresh-cut tree to be shaken to make sure you’re not bringing home a surprise pet, and request netting or baling, which is wrapping the tree for easier transport. Chances are the farm will do this for you without asking, but be sure an inch is cut off the bottom of any pre-cut tree or that a hole is drilled at the base. This will allow the tree to take up water again and prolong freshness. Just like fresh flowers, you want the tree to be placed in water as soon as possible, even propped in a bucket while you prep the stand.
BACK AT HOME While the vision of a Christmas tree beside a fireplace might make for a nice greeting card image, you’ll want to keep your tree clear of any heat source to prevent premature drying. Check water levels daily as trees can absorb up to a gallon of water each day. Unplug lights whenever you are away from the tree, whether asleep or out of the house. When you are ready to clean up from the holidays, your tree can be recycled into mulch. Check your town website or the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation's website to get the pickup date. Before leaving your tree on the curb, remove any ornaments, hooks, and tinsel from the tree.

Making an Impression A passion for shopping and sales led Lisa Shorr to creating a personal branding business
Photography by Mackenzie Bremges
Whether in the workforce or not, many women can relate to feeling overwhelmed when it comes to what to wear and how to put your best foot forward. Where do you start? I have cleaned so many closets that are overflowing with clothing that is old, does not fit, and worst of all, still has the tags on it! I am often hired because my client just does not know what is appropriate for their age or body type. To work together, our first step is to get to know each other, whether over coffee or the phone, and decide if we’re a good fit for each other. Then I have a questionnaire asking about everything from your career path and trajectory and what kind of feedback you’ve received in your reviews, to body type and goals. I can create three-, six-, or nine-month packages for clients. We can start with the closet and can then address how they want to present themselves. It’s important to start with your mindset and identify how we want to evoke positive change in our lives.
As a child, Lisa Shorr would tuck herself out of sight to listen intently as her grandma Belle would command the attention of women gathered around the kitchen table to tell them about the latest skincare products. Belle was selling them more than just moisturizer; she was teaching them how to make their best impression. Inspired by her grandmother’s passion (and following in her footsteps), Shorr forged a successful career in sales, co-founding a tech business with her husband Eric. Over the course of nearly 30 years in the workforce, Shorr came to understand that sales, and business in general, is about more than just transactions. It’s about relationships, trust, and ultimately, building your own brand. With a desire to share her insights with other women climbing the corporate ladder, she launched Shorr Success in 2012, focusing on personal style and executive presence coaching. Where did you get the idea to launch Shorr Success and how did you pursue this path? My hobby has always been shopping with friends – I’ve always been the go-to person. “Lisa, what
should I do? What should I wear?” I’ve been trained in cleaning closets, corporate imaging, personal branding, and communication skills. I went to Illustra Business Coaching and London Image Institute, both in Georgia, and studied with Roger Love, a renowned vocal coach. I’m a member of the Association of Image Consultants International and we have conferences – I’m always taking classes. How has your professional experience influenced this new endeavor? I’ve been in sales for more than 25 years and I’ve learned that sales is all about trust. People are loyal to people and that’s all about perception management – how we present ourselves. Perception is reality. In a distracted world where we are competing for attention, we need all of the influential skills we can muster. If we don’t pay attention to how we are presenting ourselves, we risk the possibility of being misunderstood and passed over for that promotion or not taken seriously in a sales or board meeting. How we present ourselves matters.
Can you give us some winter style pointers? A few key tips: to deemphasize those areas that you love the least, emphasize or bring focus to the areas you love the most. If you carry your weight in the mid-section, then draw the eye up with an interesting collar or statement necklace. If you’re busty, stay away from turtlenecks — a turtleneck doesn’t provide a focal point for the eyes to land, so they end up focused on your chest. Shift that gaze up by wearing an open-necked shirt. If you get cold, add a scarf or necklace to have somewhere else for the eye to go to. Any tips for men? Go-to pieces can include a statement watch and coordinating belt to shoes. I also love it when men have some fun with their socks! Here’s a great tip for men AND women: don’t get hung up on size. Instead, make good friends with your tailor. Good tailoring turns a sloppy appearance into a polished professional. Shorr Success ShorrSuccess.com

A Saunderstown Cape gets expanded in both size and charm
Cape Cod style homes are known for being as charming as they are adaptable, kind of like New Englanders. When Paul and Mary Beth Schmitt purchased their Saunderstown home in 1994, it suited the needs of their family of four, and with 1,200 square feet finished out of 1,750, it was affordable and offered possibilities. “We thought it would be great until the boys grew up and moved out and we wouldn’t need to down-size,” says Paul. However three years in, things were getting a bit too tight and so the couple built-out the second floor. Some years after that, things got “a bit too cozy” once again. “We’re a classic Rhode Island family and our boys and now six grandchildren all live
Renovations to the Schmitt’s Saunderstown Cape included attaching the garage which created a foyer and breezeway leading to the extended kitchen area
within 10 miles of us, as does Mary Beth’s mother and sister, and also my brother, and there’s more extended family nearby in Connecticut and in-state…” Paul explains. The couple was faced with the choice of moving or expanding again. “We decided that we

loved our house, our neighbors, our neighborhood, and South County,” Mary Beth starts. “We made the decision that we would stay in our home. Therefore, we needed to update the house for hopefully our next 25 years, and to be able to entertain family and friends especially for the holidays.” In 2016, the Schmitts started researching architects, surveyors, and builders. “We met with Peter DeStefano from DeStefano Brother’s Construction (DBC) and knew they were the builders for us,” says Paul. The major project began in November 2017 and it was mostly completed by May 2018. Upon the advice of architect Frank Karpowicz, the Schmitts gave DBC the go ahead to move forward 20 x 20 feet on the main floor to make space for a new living room with a fully vaulted cathedral ceiling. The old living room became the new formal dining area, with an 8-foot ceiling featuring a coffered section for recessed lighting and a fan. The staircase was opened up for a fresh spindled look and a half wall between the living room and the kitchen

was also opened up – and completely remodeled – to create an open floor plan between the spaces. The detached garage was then attached to add a foyer/breezeway leading into an extended kitchen area. Even the deck was redone and expanded with a columned porch area added to the front. Once the structural work was complete, it was time to refresh the interior. “We have lived in South County for much of our lives, and feel our home reflects our love of the ocean and being near the seashore. We love some of the beautiful, older historic homes of Narragansett, and wanted it to fit in with that feel, while being uniquely modern for us,” says Mary Beth. The couple did some research on their own and also enlisted Marisa Navakauskas from DBC to help create a personal aesthetic. “We like it to feel clean, warm, open and inviting,” says Mary Beth. Navakauskas assisted by suggesting colors and sharing photographs of ideas. Features like shiplap, a once modest insulation feature that’s now a hallmark of farmhouse and coastal style, were also incorporated. Local
shopping resources include McKays, Blindz and Design, Supply New England, Arnolds Branch, and Wakefield Fireplace. Mary Beth lists the new open feel, the hardwood floors, the kitchen island, the open staircase, and window shutters as the things in her home that make her most happy. Neutral walls and furnishings and natural textures like baskets lend an understated shoreline feel, while fixtures and windows keep rooms washed in light. Mary Beth describes her decorating as “New England seaside, with contemporary updates to traditional New England and Narragansett style, and with hints of French cottage. We live near the ocean and tried to focus on a beachy feeling for our home,” she says. Mission accomplished.

On a warm fall afternoon there’s no place I’d rather be than in the saddle of my bike on the South County Bike Path; pretty much the opposite is true on days when it’s cold, rainy, and windy. But the sun is always shining at So Co Cycle in the form of ebullient owner Kara Pereira, who sees the mission of her Narragansett spin studio as equal parts social and fitness. “I love to motivate people, and my greatest joy is when people come in with a friend,” she says. “For some people, it’s all about calorie burn and weight loss; for others, it’s more community-based and a chance to socialize.” Opened in April at Mariner Square on Point Judith Road, So Co Cycle has 20 state-ofthe-art bikes arranged in rows in a spacious, 2,400-square-foot studio, with daily classes led by Pereira and her team of eight instructors. A pair of leaderboards keep track of metrics like distance, speed, calories burned, and, for those so inclined, who is the leader of the pack in each 45-minute class. Participants can even sign up to receive an email with their stats after each session — something that appeals to Pereira’s competitive nature even as she tries to avoid the spotlight when she’s leading classes. “I don’t want to be that teacher in the front of the room trying to
beat everyone in class,” she says. For those who do want to race, however, the system is set up for sprint and power challenges, a nice option for serious cyclists in training as well as groups interested in a team-building exercise that’s a bit off the beaten track. On the other hand, the low lighting in the studio is ideal for those who want to tune out the rest of the class and just focus on their own workout. “People work harder when it’s dark,” says So Co instructor Stephanie Nedamlensky, who added that while most class attendees are women, men who give spin a turn also find the workout pretty challenging. Difficulty, in the form of incline, can be adjusted to individual preference, and unlike with a road bike there’s the option of doing pushups on the handlebars and doing some light weights as you pedal. “I think it’s the best cardio you can do, and you also get a full-body workout,” says Pereira. A trained yoga instructor as well as a dedicated cyclist who has completed both the Tour de Cure and the long-distance Pan Mass Challenge, Pereira builds stretching into her classes alongside cardio and strength training. Clients can mix things up by attending sessions with extra off-bike workouts, extended stretching

led by a local physical therapist, or a “wine down” event geared toward building a sense of community among cyclists. Other social events are for a good cause, like DJ-led “glow rides” that clients can pay for with a donation to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The relatively intense workouts are fueled by enthusiastic and encouraging instructors and powered by high-energy music. Pereira says the classes especially appeal to people who have “outgrown the gym a little bit and are more into beatbased activity.” During So Co Cycle’s first few months in business, that included a lot of summer visitors from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut who had been “bitten by the indoor cycling bug” back home and wanted to keep up with their fitness routine, said Pereira. Drop-in rates are $15 per class; buying a 10-pack reduces the rate to $12 per class. Newcomers are welcome to come in and try a class for free. “It’s not that intimidating once you get the first class under your belt,” Pereira promises. The studio is steadily growing a local clientele that includes a group of South County Hospital nurses who start their day with a 6am spin, and regulars like Diane Paolino and Jill Dockray, who hung around to chat after a Thursday morning Beats class led by Nedamlensky. “I like the music and the atmosphere,” said Paolino. “I feel much more motivated coming here where I can get feedback as opposed to the gym, where it felt like nobody knew who I was.” Added Dockray, who is taking her first-ever spin classes: “Even if you’re not in the mood, the music gets you in the mood.”

Flatt Out Delicious
Peace Dale is home to Sons of Liberty distillery and Whaler’s Brewing Company, and the town is a destination for Rhode Islanders to partake in the state’s burgeoning craft liquor and beer scene. Still, what the village really needed was a sit-down restaurant, so when I saw that the Flatts had opened, I was excited to check it out. The Flatts is located in the former space of Giro’s Restaurant. Giro’s opened in the late 1800s and was the first restaurant in South County to obtain a liquor license. It was a beloved local spot. In 2017, Jane LeBlanc took over the historic space, hoping to turn it into the sort of local meeting place Giro’s used to be. On the cool fall night I visited, the restaurant was warm and cozy and filled with people who all seemed to know one another. The man sitting next to me at the bar was a regular and confided that we were there too late; the Cuban Rangoons had already sold out. (It was only 6:30). The bartender explained that the rangoons are homemade, and they only had enough dough to make 147. Later in the night, the chicken wings sold out as well. We had stopped at Whaler’s Brewing on our way out for the night, so we continued our beer tasting and ordered the Whaler’s Rise and Sam
Adams Oktoberfest. The waitresses and bartenders were all experienced and deftly guided my friend and I through the menu. Since we missed out on the Cuban Rangoons, we settled for an order of Frickles and an order of Devils on Horseback. The Frickles arrived piping hot (burn-the-skin-off-your-tongue hot) and impossibly crispy. These were dill pickles, which I prefer to bread and butter pickles when fried. They were served with a tasty – and not too spicy – sriracha ranch dipping sauce. For $5, it was a large portion. The Devils on Horseback were highly recommended by our waitress. If you’ve never had them, they are dates wrapped in bacon and served with an apricot jam dipping sauce. We both liked them, admitting that if the waitress hadn’t given her recommendation, we wouldn’t have ordered the dish. Since I read that LeBlanc smokes all her own meats, and the meats come from Pat’s Pastured, I was eager to try out one of her barbeque plates. For $16, I got a half-rack of ribs, mashed sweet potatoes, baked beans, and a piece of cornbread. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and heavily rubbed with seasoning. There was a small dollop of barbeque sauce on them as well. The sweet potatoes were delicious,
obviously made from scratch and simply seasoned. The baked beans were good and had the distinct taste of being slow-cooked all day. My friend ordered from the mac and cheese section of the menu. I have to admit, when I saw her meal, I had orderer’s envy. She had the Dirty Bird bowl, which was filled with rich macaroni and cheese and topped with smoked chicken, blue cheese, buffalo sauce, and Fritos. Everything about this dish was amazing. The tender chicken was lightly smoked, so the smoky taste didn’t overwhelm. The other toppings complemented the dish in the best possible way. The portion was huge, and my friend took half of it home to enjoy another day. Jane LeBlanc set out to open a local restaurant to bring a sense of community back to Peace Dale, and she has succeeded. On the night we were there, everyone was having a good time.

Cheers to Rhode Island’s Craft Beer Movement Kingston’s Shaidzon Beer Company has South County hopping An 18-year friendship that began over a bonfire on Matunuck Beach birthed West Kingston’s Shaidzon Beer Company, one of the newest entries in Rhode Island’s ever-growing craft beer movement. Co-owners Josh Letourneau and Chip Samson took over the seven-barrel brewery left behind when Proclamation Ale Company moved north. Letourneau and Samson dished on Rhode Island’s craft beer culture, their brewing process, and shared their no-fail hangover cures.
Have you always had a love for beer? CS: For drinking it, definitely. JL: I was drinking the usual commercial beers. One day, a guy handed me an oatmeal stout and it blew my mind. How long is the brewing process? CS: It depends on what we’re making. It can take anywhere from two weeks to several months. JL: We’ve been aging a sour since April. It’s just about ready to pour. What’s the most difficult part of brewing? JL: The fermentation is the trickiest part because it’s the hardest to control. When you are working with the grains, the hot water will boil off what you don’t want. But once you get to fermentation, you are at the mercy of the process. Is it true you have a hops farm? CS: Yes! We started Hope Hops Yard to include

more local ingredients in our beer. We just had a harvest and brewed with it right away. JL: The beer is called Hoped Up. It’s a pale ale that uses freshly-picked wet hops instead of dry. Keeping the oil in the hops gives the beer a richer, more robust flavor. The mouth-feel is incredible. What are your most popular beers? CS: The Buffalo Czech Pilsner is the most popular, but our fastest selling beers are our IPAs: Never Tomorrow and For No One. JL: The IPAs aren’t brewed as often, so they go fast. What’s driving the craft beer momentum in the state? CS: The food culture of Rhode Island has really brought craft brewing to a whole different level. The number of restaurants in the state who are interested in craft beer has exploded and the support for it continues to grow.
What’s your most unexpected beer and food pairing? JL: Okay, this is a weird one. An IPA is not my go-to beer and I am not a big canned tuna eater. But I made a tuna melt for lunch one day and cracked open an IPA. There was something about the tuna with paired with the hoppiness of the beer that made it one of the best meals I’d ever eaten. What’s your go-to hangover cure? CS: I have two. One is to drink more. The other is pickle juice. JL: Tillie’s, which is right down the way, has a sandwich called the Bruce Almighty that is a burger with bacon and a fried egg. It is perfect for hangovers. CS: And you can add a pickle.

How did you get into brewing? Josh Letourneau: My now-wife gave me a home brewing kit for my twenty-first birthday. I enjoyed it so much, I ended up graduating from the American Brewers Guild. I was head brewer at Grey Sail for six years. Chip Samson: I spent 12 years in Colorado, where small breweries are a way of life. When my wife and I decided to move back to Rhode Island, Josh connected me to a job at Grey Sail.

Farm-to-Bun Burgers
Step inside Graze Burgers, and it looks like your hip cousin’s updated farmhouse. With a sleek, wooden design from Libby Slader Interior, you’re engulfed immediately in carb-heaven. Graze, which opened on October 19, is an old-fashioned burger joint with a twist: their grass-fed, hormone-free, “farmto-bun” burgers come from the cattle at their Stonington, Connecticut ranch or from a local partner farm. The beef is single-sourced from cows that they hand-pick, and their burgers are “lean and flavorful” because they “blend all cuts of meat, including prime cuts like the tenderloin, sirloin, ribeye.”
Newly opened Graze serves burgers you can’t beat – grassfed, hormone-free, and delicious
Graze offers standard burgers and the bacon-topped variety; chicken sandwiches, veggie bowls, and even the Impossible Burger, which is made from plants and famously “bleeds” like meat. To complete your burger meal, customers can indulge in truffle parmesan or bacon cheese fries; they can slurp a decadent dessert in a cup, i.e., a frozen custard shake (caramel with whipped cream, anyone?). Opt out of the shake and sip kombucha, boxed water, or Chameleon Cold Brew Coffee. Graze Burgers plans to host a grand opening soon, so check it out now and beat the herd. 127 Granite Street, Westerly. GrazeRI.com
Baked by Jessica is a new sweet spot in Wakefield A “cupcakery” is perhaps the best kind of bakery. Bread is filling and necessary, but cupcakes? They are the stuff of the baking gods. One of Wakefield’s newest digs, Baked by Jessica offers up the sweet treats – along with custom-order cakes – in her robin’s egg blue store. Jessica Dyer describes Baked as her lifelong dream, which came to fruition at its grand opening on September 12. Dyer previously co-owned the now-defunct Cranston House of Pizza with her husband, where she turned the storefront into an opportunity to flex her baking chops, selling brownies, cookies, and – you

guessed it – cupcakes. Dyer grew up in a foodie family, cooking and baking with her grandparents, and Baked is the culmination of her training, passion, and creativity. She makes flavors like pumpkin spice, Ben and Jerry’s-inspired “halfbaked,” Funny Bones (an old Hostess recipe, consisting of a chocolate base with peanut butter filling, chocolate frosting and peanut butter on top), and many others that she keeps on rotation. Her favorite is still a classic chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing. Says Dyer, “It’s a good way to tell if it’s a good cupcake.” 406 A Main Street, Wakefield. Facebook: Baked by Jessica
