OH BUOY! The Lobster Trap Tree connects the shared fishing roots and talents of Westerly and Stonington
Doris Copponi, Tom Fabian, and Lisa Konicki find inspiration in Gloucester. “Their tree is covered entirely in buoys painted by children; ours has buoys from professional artists and 40 painted by Stonington children. The OCCC sent a $1,000 donation check to Cape Ann Arts which produced this tree as a ‘thank you’ for the inspiration,” says Konicki.
Light spectacles, giant snowflakes, and decorated trees are a usual sight, but this year, Stonington’s winter display will be anything but typical. Premiering this year at the town dock, you’ll find the Lobster Trap Tree: a creative presentation that celebrates the area’s fishing industry, talented artists, local businesses, and community members, while simultaneously ringing in the holidays. The Lobster Trap Tree is exactly what it sounds like: a tree shape constructed of green wire lobster traps decorated with painted buoys. The display is the brainchild of Lisa Konicki, president of the Westerly-based Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce (OCCC), which delivers and runs programs, services, and events in and beyond Westerly. She was inspired by a lobster trap tree she saw on a visit to Gloucester, MA. Konicki says, “When I saw it, the first thought in the back of my head was, why doesn’t Stonington have this? We’re known for our lobster, seafood, and fishing.” Back at her desk, Konicki got busy with the goal of supplying buoys to be sponsored and decorated. The OCCC quickly surpassed their goal of having 325 buoys claimed. “Momentum has been building since the spring when we announced it,” Konicki says, and it’s clear why. Not only does the Lobster Trap Tree represent the area’s fishing industry, but it “ties together so many aspects of the community: children, professional artists, amateur artists, business, non-profits, and historical landmarks in town.” In addition, the exhibit allows local individuals to represent their own stories in a collective work. While other lobster trap trees exist, Stonington’s is unique in that it features buoys painted specifically for the atypical tennenbaum. Those who sponsored a buoy had the option of channeling their inner Picasso or having one of the OCCC’s selected professional artists paint it. These local artists, coming from Rhode Island or Connecticut, held workshops with children to paint 40 buoys while decorating those they were given. Artist Kristin Shaffer was thrilled to be part of the project. A hairdresser and talented painter, Shaffer was able to express the sponsors’ wishes with her art. “One of my favorite buoys was a sweet memorial to a beautiful family in the Borough,” she recalls, exemplifying how the architectural display is more than just art, but rather an anthology of personal stories. Folks are encouraged to visit the tree, snap photos, and shop around in the area. LobsterTrapTree.com offers additional information, and donations can be made via checks payable to OCCC and sent to 1 Chamber Way, Westerly, RI 02891 which help support the project and, as Konicki notes, “what we hope will become an annual tradition.” | By Megan Monte

By Robert Isenberg
The Golden Boy Andrew Burnap is a Yale graduate and Tony Award winner – but he maintains a strong relationship with his native South County and URI On the night of September 26, during a national CBS broadcast, the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play was announced. It didn’t go to Jake Gylenhaal, one of the most recognized actors in Hollywood. It didn’t go to Blair Underwood, an established TV and film actor. The award went to Andrew Burnap, a 30-year-old actor from Rhode Island, who had just performed in a Broadway production of The Inheritance.
“I was stunned,” says Paula McGlasson, Chair of the Theatre Department at the University of Rhode Island. “Those were great, known actors he was up against. It’s an honor to even be nominated, but then when he won – you couldn’t quite take it all in. It was overwhelming.” McGlasson has known Burnap since he was an undergraduate theater major at URI. They worked together on countless shows,
and they continue to have a close relationship. McGlasson first saw Burnap during his audition for a musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and she was impressed by both his talent and versatility. “No matter what role he read for, he had a fresh, memorable take on the character,” remembers McGlasson. “He was a full participant, whether it was drama, comedy, Shakespeare, musical, whatever it would

Dr. Gerald Colvin Can See You Now. have been. You remembered him. His work was remarkable.” Burnap has strong roots in South County. He grew up in nearby Matunuck, he regularly sang in the Chorus of Westerly, and he became a prolific performer at URI. Over the course of four years, McGlasson watched the growth of the future Broadway star. She would spot him around campus, running lines and rehearsing his blocking in order to refine his many characters. This rigorous preparation helped him win the Irene Ryan Competition for acting, hosted by the Kennedy Center and involving 250 college-aged competitors. “I saw him evolve as an actor,” she says. “His hunger for improvement was so demanding. And he demanded the same of the people he was working with.” Burnap went on to study at the prestigious Yale School of Drama, followed by a blossoming career in New York. The Inheritance, a script adapted by Matthew Lopez and based on E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End, was a singular showcase for Burnap; the production received rave reviews and (also) a Tony Award for Best Play. While many successful actors may vanish into the limelight, Burnap remains beholden to his origins. At the height of the pandemic, Burnap returned to URI to teach undergraduate acting classes, and he routinely keeps in touch with his past mentors. Meanwhile, URI has a new feather in its hat: Never has an alumnus of the college’s Theatre Department won such accolades, and Burnap has generously credited URI with his formative training. “I don’t know what it will do,” says McGlasson, who has taught at the program since 1985. “Will it draw people to our program? Maybe. Will it draw additional funding, which is needed? Maybe. It’s hard to say. What does it mean to us on a day-to-day basis? It doesn’t change a thing. But it makes you proud.”
One of Rhode Island’s most distinguished cancer physicians, a member CharterCARE Medical Associates, is available to you at several of our locations. He is the former Director of Hematology/ Oncology at South County Medical Group, has served on the faculty of both the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University and Boston University School of Medicine, and has extensive teaching and research experience.

Site of ‘Great Swamp Massacre’ returned to Narragansett Indian Tribe The site where English colonists massacred hundreds of Narragansett Indians more than 345 years ago has officially been returned to the tribe in a land transfer that’s being described as monumental. By Alex Nunes
On a Saturday morning in October, a small group of Narragansett Indian Tribe members gathered deep in the woods of South Kingstown at a monument commemorating what’s believed to be the site of the “Great Swamp Massacre.” They lit three fires representing the past, present and future, and recognized the return of five acres of sacred land from the Rhode Island Historical Society.

Cassius Spears Jr., first councilman of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, recalled his experience coming to the site since childhood. “Every time I’ve come up here, there’s been sorrow in my heart,” Spears said. “But today when I come here, this is the start where I can start feeling an opportunity for healing.” The Great Swamp Massacre occurred during King Philip’s War in December of
1675, when about 1,000 English colonists attacked a Narragansett stronghold, killing an estimated 650 Indian men, women and children, and taking 300 more captive. In 1906, the Hazard family gave the land to the Rhode Island Historical Society. “We agreed to protect it; we agreed to steward it,” Historical Society Executive Director Morgan Grefe said at Saturday’s

event. “We’re here in continuation of that promise – to see that this land is protected and stewarded in a way that we could never have accomplished ourselves.” Grefe added, “This is truly one of the most profound and humbling moments of my life.” The transfer to the tribe was finalized on Friday after being in the works for four years.

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, including recently-retired staff member Neil Kelly, assisted in getting court approval required because of the terms under which the land was given to the historical society. The site will remain preserved as open space accessible to the general public. Narragansett Indian Tribe Medicine Man and
Historic Preservation Officer John Brown called the moment an “historical and monumental occasion for the Narragansetts” and for “those people that worked diligently to get these ancient lands of our ancestors back to us.” Alex Nunes can be reached at anunes@thepublicsradio.org.

The Scoop | rhody gem •

The White Elephant Home store
We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it!
What it is: A furniture shop with a collection of items given new life through tasteful refinishing, plus handmade gifts and decor.
What makes it a Rhody Gem? Much like the circa mid-1700s home – complete with fireplace and exposed beams – in which the shop is housed, pieces found at The White Elephant are relics of the past given new life. Whether stripped down to their former glory or treated with a fresh coat of paint and new hardware, old furniture is repurposed for a more modern setting, and staged in this cozy shop with a blend of unique accents. Despite contemporary updates, owner Caitlin Musso notes there’s a sense of nostalgia when you set foot inside. “We had a woman who saw an encyclopedia set, and she had to go over and open one of the books to smell it because she had the same set growing up,” Musso says. “Because we have one-of-a-kind pieces, our inventory is constantly changing, so it will always be different each time you come in. We blend the new with the old.” This month, the shop is decked out for the holidays, with no shortage of homey gifts and jolly throw pillows.

VISIONS OF SUGARPLUMS Rhody’s favorite artisanal lollipop maker debuts a pair of festive flavors Want the stockings stuffed with a little extra cheer this year? Goodies from local artisan candy maker Popette of Pendulum will bring an extra dose of merriment. Just in time for Christmas, Popette is rolling out two festive confections – vanilla swirl and candy-cane reindeer lollipops. Popette’s founder Brenda Swift – Rhode Island’s own Wilhelmina Wonka – created her candy company from the belief that “pure is possible.” Swift sources local and organic ingredients to make Popette’s sweet treats, which are vegan as well as gluten and tree-nut free. Before Swift donned her confectioner’s hat, she was a fashion designer in New York City. The RISD alum designed clothes for luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Bloomingdales. While taking a break from the fashion industry, she began noodling with candy-making, and, ever the artist, added a hand-painted design to her confections. Her creative background is evident in her crafted candies. Each pop is embellished with a whimsical brush-stroke design. Swift spent a year fiddling with the recipe – which uses brown rice syrup instead of corn, organic cane sugar, and no chemical additives – before she began toting them to farmers’ markets around the state. Now Popette of Pendulum is found at specialty shops throughout the US. Learn more at PopetteOfPendulum.com | By Karen Greco Photography by Nick DelGiudice SORhodeIsland.com • December 2021

Holiday Cheers Sparkling cocktails made with Wickford wine are merry and bright the festive season. But to kick off your celebrations (or your day) on the right note, opt for a quality bubbly. “For a good sparkling wine, you don’t want it too sweet,” she says. Some winemakers add sugar during the first fermentation to hide a multitude of sins. Sparkling wine uses a secondary
fermentation process, which includes adding sugar to trigger the yeast to ferment again. This activates the fizz. The bubbles should be “elegant,” continues Buonanno. “It should feel silky on the palate.” She recommends using a white wine glass rather than the traditional flute. “Sparkling wine is a wine, so it needs air,” she explains.

“This is going to be a little controversial,” confides Liana Buonanno, president and co-founder of Wickford’s Gooseneck Vineyards. “My favorite time to drink sparkling wines is early in the morning. There’s nothing wrong with some bubbles in the a.m. It’s a good way to start the day.” No judgments here, particularly during

“You want to be able to pick up the fruit aromas.” And drink up. Buonanno cautions against keeping it in the glass too long, lest the bubbles disappear. “Invest in a good bottle stopper; even just a half an hour is enough time for the bubbles to evaporate.” When entertaining, Buonanno recommends a prosecco or a brut rosé. They have enough complexity to please all taste buds. Making a cocktail from the effervescent vino “doesn’t have to be complicated. A brut rosé with some fresh raspberries or cranberries thrown in the glass makes a festive but easy cocktail.” Buonanno shares two elegant libations to add some sparkle to your holiday celebrations. She points out, like any mixed drink, the better the quality of the wine, the better the cocktail. A Tasteful Tale of Warmth Sea Craft’s menu tells a unique story of vibrant flavor, unmatched comfort, and surprise It’s not every day your dinner menu has a prologue. Sea Craft, Narragansett’s newest waterfront restaurant, tells a three-course story: an introduction, body of work, and conclusion. As the prologue puts it, “The menu is, and will always be our story, an explanation of who we are and what we want to show you.” A friend and I shuffled into Sea Craft on a chilly night, using the side entrance at first (as we’d been accustomed to when the restaurant was Turtle Soup) and caught a glimpse of The Shore House, the historic inn built in 1901 that houses Sea Craft. Turning a corner, we were met with the sophisticated black-and-white motif of the dining room, including a large bar easy to imagine overflowing with raw bar lovers on a summer night. We chose a quiet table by a window and settled into our rattan chairs. Before diving into the “Introduction” or appetizer course, we took our time perusing a selection of classic beach cocktails and settled on the Agiros Pera’ and an Aviation. The Torched Taleggio

Accompanied with spiced pear, orange liqueur, and lemon, the drink was as tasty as its star anise garnish was lovely. The Aviation, which was served in a coupe glass, was a stunning shade of purplish blue. With London gin as the base, the violet liqueur stood out with floral kick.

For our app, we selected the Torched Taleggio and were immediately delighted by the approachability of the fry bread, best described (at least for New Englanders) as a tiny doughboy. We spread each piece with a sweet yet tart plum jam, topped with a generous spread of the torched cheese. Similar to a brie, the taleggio had a thin, rough exterior with a smooth and creamy, melt-in-your-mouth inside. Between the cocktails and this elevated comfort-food bite, it’s safe to say we were warmed from the seaside chill. From root vegetables and vibrant salads to fish and steak dishes, the “Body of Work” section of the menu has something for everyone.

Still craving cozy, my friend opted for the Goat Ricotta Anolini. The broth, a mushroom brodo, was subtle and soothing, pairing perfectly with the freshness of the goat ricotta and savoriness of the salt pork. For my entree, server Matt swayed me to try the Whole Spanish Mackerel when he described the creaminess of the chickpea puree on the side. The fish was perfectly crispy and salty on the outside, soft and light on the inside, and neighbored by a generous serving of beets topped with zesty gremolata parsley sauce. Next to it was the chickpea puree (as creamy and delicious as described) carefully lined with urfa pepper, a satisfying surprise accompanying yet another warming course.
Full and content, we almost stopped there, but remembered no story is complete without a conclusion. For dessert, Matt offered a final suggestion – the Chocolate Budino. The cool chocolate pudding was topped, to our delight, with a toasted mezcal meringue and paired with a crumbly shortbread-like sable cookie. Finishing this culinary story with, essentially, an elevated s’more felt symbolic of our entire experience – comfortable enough to settle in, surprising enough to come back for more.

Allie’s alum opens new donut shop in Kingston After a decade hand cutting donuts for Allie’s – Rhode Island’s OG fried dough institution – Ryan Zeolla decided to strike out on his own with RI Guys Donuts. His new storefront at the Emporium at URI’s Kingston campus “fell into our laps,” Zeolla says, noting that the foot traffic from the students made the location hard to pass up. RI Guys Donuts serves up more than just donuts. The menu includes bagels with an assortment of house-made cream
cheeses and breakfast sandwiches served on an English muffin. Their Rhody Slammah is a decadent sandwich with ham, bacon or sausage, and egg and cheese served between a glazed donut. “It’s an explosion of flavors,” Zeolla says, noting that it’s popular with the students. “Rhode Island’s a special place for donuts,” he says. “New York has bagels and pizza. But RI is big on donuts.” Kingston, Facebook: RIGuysDonuts

WHERE HOLIDAY SHOPPING IS Mexican fusion surfs into Westerly Surf Cantina is the next eatery to ride Westerly’s food scene wave. Three massive, glass-encased garage doors overlook Canal Street and lead to a welcoming bar and lounge area that features a fireplace, plush couches, and oversized chairs. The restaurant marries the coastal casual vibe of the town with Mexican-inspired cuisine. “We wanted to be the place where locals could come after work, hang out at the bar and relax,” says Surf Cantina’s general manager Steve Sinardi. Come for the ambiance but stay for the food. Head Chef Frances Medina, formerly of the acclaimed Rio Salado in Mystic, has crafted a fusion menu that finds inspiration in both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, featuring items like Mexican Fish & Chips, Octopus and Chorizo, and Soupy Soup. Live entertainment is also on the menu, with Friday and Saturday nights reserved for local DJs and bands. Westerly, Surf-Cantina.com
Raise a mug of holiday beer in West Kingston On tap at Shaidzon Beer Company in December is Nöel, the first holiday beer to come out of the four-year-old West Kingston brewery. Their holiday spiced Belgian quadrupel is a big-bodied brew with a winter-warming 9 percent alcohol. “Traditional Belgian breweries have a history of releasing a special beer for the holidays,” says brewery co-founder Chip Samson. “Shaidzon is influenced by the beers coming out of Europe, so Nöel is a nod to the traditional Belgian tradition.” The beer’s robust flavor comes from assertive dark fruits like raisins and plums. The flavor notes from spices like orange peel, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and cloves give it a distinct holiday flair. Also unique to the Belgian style, Nöel is bottle-conditioned. The brew is available from Black Friday through the new year. West Kingston, ShaidzonBeer.com

The New Coastal A Great Island cottage earns its stripes by skipping them for natural textures and a neutral palette Michael Mosca and husband David Melançon live between Manhattan and Narragansett with their six-year-old Parsons Russell Terrier, Lorenzo. Mosca is a realtor with Sotheby’s Mott & Chace International Realty, specializing in luxury coastal properties, and Melançon is the founder and managing partner of a brand strategy consultancy and serves on the board of Providence-based Social Enterprise Greenhouse. Through the years the industrious pair have designed and decorated a Manhattan loft, a Colorado timber home, a California marina bungalow, and an 1890 sea cottage in Ogunquit, which they “restored and loved for more than 10 years until the commute from Manhattan for weekend visits became too much to handle,” Mosca explains. They sold the Maine property and began looking for a home on the North Fork of Long Island until a summer trip to Narragansett, where Mosca “discovered” Great Island. Even though Mosca spent his childhood summers at Narragansett beaches – “I even learned to swim at Sand Hill Cove!” – he wasn’t aware of the small island accessed by Galilee Escape Road in Narragansett. He recalls the freezing cold February day he visited a handful of properties with his sister, including the one that would become home. “It fell squarely into the category of ‘worst house in the best neighborhood,’ and my husband was on board sight unseen. Having undertaken several renovation projects over the past 20+ years, we knew we could turn it into something we’d love,” says Mosca with a knowing smile.

Barely-there window treatments allow for unobstructed views year-round
The pair purchased the property thinking they’d modify/expand the existing 600-squarefoot home. “That became impossible due to zoning and building restrictions,” says Mosca, who explains that they decided to raze it and start from scratch, embarking on a threeyear project between design, permits, and construction. Although they had experience renovating older homes, they’d never built one, and enlisted architect Laura Krekorian, who helped them realize their vision of a charming Great Island escape of their own.
Inside decor is based on a pleasing neutral palette of creams, linens, and soft grays that connect with the natural colors outside. “These are comfortable hues for us, and they complement any style of furnishings and art. They also allow the architectural details like the stone wall around the fireplace, soaring ceiling, and wonderful water views to shine,” says Mosca. “We decidedly did not want a coastal home that was traditional blue and white or shouted ‘nautical’ in any way.”

“South County is an amazing place – the best of the land and the sea,” muses Mosca. “We walk or bike down the street to our local fish market (Ferry Wharf) nearly every day, and we eat local produce pretty much exclusively. We paddleboard, kayak, and quahog (yes, it’s a verb!) from our backyard. We love the beach in all seasons, even winter when we can go with our dog, Lorenzo.”

GET RHODY STYLE Great Island homeowner Michael Mosca shares ideas and tips for making the most of living in the Ocean State. ISLAND VIEWS “Since we live on the water, the entire house is oriented in that direction and we consider it an extension of the physical space. From the beginning, I’d imagined warm breezes blowing through gauzy white curtains on both levels of the house. Those window treatments were probably the first things I purchased, even before the house was built,” says Mosca. LOCAL ACCENT “My father gifted me a Haven Brothers print as a thank you for nursing him through a serious surgery many years ago. That hangs in our living room here now, but it’s always been with us across the country reminding me of RI and my dad. We have pieces from other local artists and artisans sprinkled throughout.”

Plant a garden if you have even the tiniest yard,” says Mosca, an aspiring potter who serves on the board of the South County Art Association. Meet Santa Claus The big guy in red weighs in on everything from the proper way to enjoy a Del’s, his first RI stop on Christmas Eve, and how to live a merry and bright life
Dear Santa, We’ve assembled some questions to get to know you better! First things first, when it comes to coffee milk, are you team Autocrat or Eclipse? Both! I prefer Eclipse in the morning, and Autocrat in the evening. I find Eclipse has a stronger coffee flavor – great for those early morning meetings in the workshop. Autocrat is a little sweeter – just the thing to satisfy a late-night sweet tooth. How do you enjoy Del’s frozen lemonade: straw or no straw? A straw!? Even at the North Pole we don’t use a straw with a Del’s! Favorite type of clam chowder after a cold night on the sleigh: Rhode Island (clear), New England (white), or Manhattan (red)? Well, red and white are my two favorite colors, but I prefer my chowda Rhode Island-style. Where do you land first in Rhode Island? Our first stop on Christmas Eve is always Foster, then Glocester. They have the most snow. After checking the naughty and nice list for the second time, what is your go-to snack: calamari or clam cakes? I do love a good clam cake, but I prefer calamari – with the tentacles!
When you find yourself in Little Rhody in the off-season, where do you and Mrs. Claus like to go? Mrs. Claus and I have a beautiful summer home in Bristol. There are so many wonderful things to see and do there, and everyone is so friendly. We especially love strolling through the downtown, frequenting the shops, and visiting the local restaurants – incognito of course! What is your number one tip to making the season merry and bright? Be kind to one another. And give without expecting anything in return – not only at Christmastime, but throughout the year. Making the season merry and bright for others is the best way to make the season merry and bright for yourself.

What type of Rhody treat would you like to see on your cookie plate this year? Hmmm… One Christmas Eve a little girl left me a plate full of these delightful little mini pizzas. I think she called them pizza chips. Well, they were not quite cookies, but they were round and tasty!

Pieced Together You don’t need a green thumb to be smitten with The Farmer’s Daughter. For the uninitiated, this is no ordinary garden center but a wondrous place outfitted with inspiring displays sure to transform any unsuspecting visitor into a gardenista. Christine Chitnis is a longtime fan. The Providence-based writer and photographer is also the author of four books and a contributor to publications including the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Country Living. Each fall, Chitnis makes the 40-minute trek (hey, that’s far in Rhode Island) to visit the South Kingstown destination to marvel at the displays of heirloom pumpkins and gourds. “I always end up choosing many more pumpkins than my modest front porch can support!” says Chitnis. In September of 2020 she approached owner Sarah Partyka and asked if she could create a large overhead shot of every color, shape, and variety of pumpkin she offered. Partyka agreed. “As a photographer, I am constantly inspired by nature’s abundant palette and I’d been dreaming of this shot for over a year, ever since my last visit. In my mind, I could see hundreds of pumpkins arranged by color, from the dusky blue green Jarrahdale to the creamy white Casperita, to the mahogany-orange Daybreaks.” Chitnis shares that the resulting photo is one of her favorite shots ever taken over a decades-long career. “As soon as I shared it on Instagram, I could tell it was going to take on a life of its own.” Sure enough, what followed was a whirlwind as Chitnis’ pumpkin picture raced across social media, reaching millions of viewers. Britney Spears, the queen of pop herself, even reposted the pumpkins to her 35 million followers. As an author, Chitnis has a literary agent that helps her land book deals, and recalls a conversation asking what she thought about licensing the pumpkin photo for a puzzle. This was during the height of the pandemic when puzzles were all the rage and selling out in stores across the country. “I thought it sounded like the perfect opportunity to share my photo with a larger audience,” says Chitnis.

The 1,000-piece Heirloom Pumpkins Puzzle was released by Galison in September 2021, a year after the original photo was taken, and it has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm. “I’ve received lovely feedback from puzzle enthusiasts who share with me that the puzzle is quite challenging! I have yet to attempt it, but I’m carving out some time over the holiday break to give it a shot.” Find the Heirloom Pumpkins 1,000-piece puzzle at The Farmer’s Daughter, and various local and national retailers. ABOUT LINDA @lll_images Based in Westerly, I was born and raised in Newport. Photography has been a favorite hobby of mine since high school. I love to be outdoors, and over the past few years, I have developed an interest in photographing the natural beauty of our area.
