Heliblock tours offer a bird's eye view of Rhode Island
SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS Get a new perspective on familiar sights with a South County helicopter tour Typically, summer in Rhode Island is a by-land-and-by-sea kind of affair, though most of us know this state inside and out by all landlocked and nautical vantage points. In the spirit of shaking things up, we propose taking it to the sky. Heliblock runs charters as well as guided tours between Westerly and Block Island. Some of their tours include a trip over the Block Island Wind Farm or an aerial lap around the island. Over the mainland, tours glide over Watch Hill, Misquamicut Beach, and, yes, even Taylor Swift’s house. Flying over Aquidneck Island is Newport Helicopters Tours, which circles the
Newport Mansions and lighthouses. They’ll even take you further up for a bird’s-eye view of Bristol and Providence. Seeing the state from hundreds of feet up is one thing, but for wannabe pilots out there, both companies offer demo flights, letting you get your hands on the controls and actually pilot the helicopter. A real pilot will be sitting next to you with their hands on the controls as well, but you can leave that part out when you’re bragging to your friends back on the ground. Learning on the Go A pair of URI researchers study kids who exercise in the classroom As long as anyone can remember, grade schoolers have perched at desks, toiled quietly, and then, at the clang of the bell, clamored outside for recess. But Dr. Emily Clapham wondered what would happen if schools combined the two. She imagined a “kinesthetic classroom,” where students could both study and exercise at the same time. “We tend to think of good students as the ones who are sitting still and not talking,” says Clapham. “However, we are learning more about the negative health impact of being sedentary. We are also learning more about connections between movement
- both full-body movements and speech movements - and learning.” Clapham is an associate professor of kinesiology at URI, and she wanted to study the effects of physical activity on young pupils. Clapham didn’t invent the concept, but she was fascinated by its potential. She developed the idea with fellow researcher Dr. Michelle Flippin, an assistant professor of communicative disorders, and conscripted second graders from West Kingston Elementary School as test subjects. For fidgety eight-year-olds, the research was a treat: they could use exercise balls, balance boards, standing desks, and
even a desk-bicycle hybrid. “Different students had different preferences,” says Clapham. “Some children preferred standing desks, while others preferred sitting on an exercise ball versus a traditional chair. We found that most children prefer to move their bodies and have trouble sitting for long periods of time.” To measure its educational impact, Clapham and Flippin outfitted their 43 subjects with waistband pedometers and digital voice recorders. They could analyze their data on several levels, including total word count, steps taken, and how many times a teacher and student exchanged sentences. The researchers finished their first round of data collection last year, and they plan to

Their initial grants were vital for the pilot study, but they hope that, with additional funding, they can expand their project and measure long-term progress. It may be awhile before exercise machines becomes standard in grade school classrooms, but Clapham believes the results of this first study are significant. “[We] are still investigating the impact of the kinesthetic equipment on student attention to classroom tasks,” says Clapham. “Our long-term goal is to partner with educators to create classrooms that are ‘bodies on, voices on, minds on.’” –Robert Isenberg

The Life Aquatic The New England Quahog Festival returns for a third year of celebrating all things Ocean State
Rhode Islanders have a lot of pride. We look after our communities, we’re creative when it comes to parades, and we embrace what we harvest from our waters. On August 26, the third annual New England Quahog Festival & Sea Creature Parade will highlight all of this and more, with proceeds going toward renovating the North Kingstown Town Beach playground. The festival started a few years ago, when a group of kids in Nancy Rafi’s neighborhood mentioned wanting to put together a small parade. “All of the moms and dads at the bus stop started chiming in, and it started getting bigger and bigger,” says Rafi, who coordinates the festival and parade. She is a mastermind behind the event, which in its first year had an estimated 1,500 attendees. “Last year we had almost 4,000.”
20
SORhodeIsland.com • August 2018
The festival’s success is in large part due to its sponsors, who provide great local music, activities, food, and brews for the event. This year’s beer garden, sponsored by McKay’s Furniture, will include Whalers Brewery, Gooseneck Vineyards, and a highlight in the garden, called “The Drunken Mermaid,” which features Sons of Liberty’s Loyal Lemonade and some secret additions that will turn the drink a variety of cool colors as you drink it. Other additions include a beefed-up food truck court and raw bar, provided by the RI Shellfisherman’s Association, and mermaid beach photoshoots with professional photographers. Centerville Bank sponsors the Sea Creature Parade, along with a free costume-making day on August 18. “We’ll have artists and crafters with sewing machines and glue
guns,” says Rafi. “Everybody should be able to participate, whether you have the funds to do it or not.” Rafi has seen her share of pretty amazing and artistic costumes, from schools of sparkling jellyfish to entire crews of swashbuckling pirates. Prizes are given out for the best individual and group costumes. The Different Drummer in Wickford currently holds the title for best group costume with their six-person shark and scuba-diver duo and a massive, elaborate manatee costume. Speaking of costumes, don’t forget to check out the hilarious 2019 Mermen of Wickford Calendar, which showcases business owners, philanthropists, and regular local guys sporting their prettiest mermaid tails. Artist and instructor Theresa Girard finds community through creativity
Painting it Forward
Theresa Girard uses her art to connect and give back For artists of all disciplines, art is used as a means of communication – whether it be visual, conceptual, textile, or performing. For Theresa Girard, this concept clicked as early as when she was a child using crayons. “I always knew it was going to be for me,” the Narragansett-based painter explains. “I did something artistic all of my life.” Coming from a large family, art school was certainly out of the question. For Girard, however, this pull towards art and the role it played in her life only grew stronger. The Providence-native took it upon herself to craft her own education on abstract expressionism and contemporary artists, practicing all different kinds of mediums. Painting, however, took a priority. With a knack for color and composition, Girard fell in love with the “history that was created in the background of the painting.”
“I started off painting realism, and then I just became more interested in what was going on around the actual object.” Between large marketing jobs and program directing, Girard has always taken the role of educator and exceeded to the top of her career in marketing, education, and training. Still, despite working in a corporate office most of her life, the abstract artist knew that painting was not just a hobby – it was a lifestyle. Today, her work can be viewed in galleries such as Jessica Hagen Gallery in Newport and Louisa Gould Fine Art in Martha’s Vineyard. Her dedication carried on even in the face of tragedy; her brother suffered a traumatic brain injury when Girard was only 23 years old. “Art gave me the ability to separate and process that,” she explains, adding that once she was able to become a full-time artist, she was

Mel Edison’s day has been nothing short of terrible. After losing his job as the executive of a high-end Manhattan firm during an economic recession, his wife gets the axe at her job, causing an emasculated Mel to fall into a depression. To make matters worse, a heat wave strikes, the couple’s apartment is robbed, and Mel’s psychiatrist dies, causing
him to have a nervous breakdown. On the verge of surrender following his series of unfortunate events, Mel realizes that his indignity may just be the very best thing to happen to him. So goes the plot of Neil Simon’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue, this month’s production at The Granite Theatre in

downtown Westerly. The year-round theater opened its curtains on its 18th season in March with an experimental array of shows. Simon, a Granite Theatre favorite, delivers rapid-fire one-liners on the topical issue of job insecurity. The production runs August 3-26, with Jude Pascatello directing and husband-andwife team Mark and Diane Foster leading the cast. Following The Prisoner of Second Avenue and running throughout the month of September is Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced. Directed by John Cillino, one of the theater’s most talented mystery directors, the story will follow a chaotic plot in a small town’s search to find a murderer’s identity after a frightening notice is placed in the newspaper about a murder that’s yet to occur. Granite Theatre artistic director David Jepson says that “audiences can expect to see a production steeped in the atmosphere of a different era” as the spine-tingling mystery unfolds. In October, Anna Convery will direct Bell, Book and Candle, the story of a modern-day witch who falls in love with her writer-tenant. The show, though nothing like it, is inspired by sitcom-fantasy television show Bewitched. Through the holiday season, Jepson himself will direct the theater’s production of Annie. It’ll be the third time in his 40-year career that he’s directed the Broadway blockbuster. He praised the theater for its innovation, despite their limited production space, for how they “wow [their] audience as [they] move them from the dark orphanage to the streets of New York City and the opulent Warbucks mansion.” Jepson expects a huge turnout for each of the season’s remaining shows. He says that the “culture of a dedicated audience in their small community is [like a] family.” For Jepson, the magic isn’t limited to the stage. It extends from every seat in the house. Cajun Style

Rhythm and Roots’ Youth Music Camp celebrates traditional tunes with kids As part of the 21st annual Rhythm & Roots Festival this Labor Day weekend in Charlestown, lifelong musician Pam Weeks will share the Cajun music tradition with kids of all ages during the festival’s Youth Music Camp. “[It’s important to] introduce young people to Cajun music, and all traditional music, as something that they can do, and not just something they go to the festival and sit and listen to with their parents,” says Weeks. “We can all sit down and play some fiddle tunes together, and have fun and connect with other people.” This is Week’s second year as the camp’s director, and Karen McGrath will serve as her assistant director. Weeks will teach fiddle, viola, and cello alongside a number of renown musicians, including Cathy Mason and Amy Larkin (fiddle); Jim Joseph and Tim Kness (accordion); Bill Olson and Elna Joseph (guitar/bass); and Michael Pattavina (mandolin/bass). Accordions can be provided, Weeks says, and cello, viola, and other acoustic instrument musicians are also welcome. “Music, and teaching people to play music, has really been a lot of what my life has been about,” says Weeks. She learned to play the violin in fourth grade, and now performs the fiddle, guitar, mountain dulcimer, and cello. Weeks also teaches a laundry list of string and fretted instruments, as well as piano, voice, saxophone, flute, and clarinet. “Teaching is so important to carry this music on,” she adds. “Playing music is really part of who we are as human beings.” Classes are held right outside the festival’s grounds, in the Ninigret Park picnic pavilion. The students first watch and listen to the instructors, and then practice the same phrases repeatedly. “The way of learning something from someone, having to do something over and over… I think it’s really important for kids to experience,” explains Weeks, “because nowadays [kids] can do anything by touching a tablet or watching TV, but this is a real hands-on,

creative thing. And they end up creating something really beautiful.” The camp wraps in the afternoon on Sunday, the fourth day of the festival, and the kids perform with instructors in the sprawling Dance Tent. “They don’t have a big audience staring at them, but instead when
they play, everybody’s dancing,” laughs Weeks. “It’s not only the parents, but it’s become a tradition for a lot of the dancers to come because they want to support the young people too.” August 31-September 2, Charlestown. RhythmAndRoots.com – Annie Furuyama

An Island Daycation Awaits How to get the most out of Block Island in a single day
Champlin’s Resort
8am: Ferry departs The traditional ferry is a 55 minute ride, which is ample time to rest up for the busy day ahead of you. 8:15am: Hit the snack bar While you try to relax, passenger after passenger walks by you with the best-looking Bloody Mary you’ve ever seen. “I’m on vacation,” you tell yourself when you order one. And then you officially are.

8:55am: Arrive on Block Island Bringing a car has another big bonus: passengers with vehicles are the first ones off the ferry. Nothing screams VIP like peeling off the dock while a boatload of people watch in pure envy. This daycation thing already looks good on you. 9am: Grab breakfast in Old Harbor Head over to Persephone’s Kitchen, a cozy cafe on Dodge Street, for egg and avocado sandwiches, gluten-free banana bread, and their signature smoothie bowls – the perfect marriage of thickened fruit-based smoothies with granola. PersephonesKitchenBI.com 10am: Head to Southeast Light Stop by Southeast Light, one of two lighthouses on the island, for a quick dose of history, architecture, and awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic and the Block Island Wind Farm – otherwise known as the Instagram Trifecta. 22 Mohegan Trail
11am: Peek at the Mohegan Bluffs You could spend an entire day walking down the 141 steps that lead to patches of near-perfect beaches complete with crystal clear water and spectacular vistas of the 200-foot Mohegan Bluffs. The descent and climb back is challenging and time-consuming, so today you’ll take a peek from the top and half-check it off your BI bucket list. There, that felt good. 12pm: Go parasailing Your next stop is to Block Island Parasailing, where you’ll soar 500 to 800 feet up in the air for an unmatched view of the island from above. Though the entire ride only takes about 20 minutes, bragging rights are yours forever (or at least this summer). BlockIslandParasail. com 1pm: Pick up lunch to go The beach is your next respite/multi-tasking activity, and you’ll need to pick up some take-out for lunch to keep this Block Island boot camp… I mean island getaway… as efficient as possible.
Photography by Tiffany Medrano
7am: Arrive to the ferry port in Point Judith You’ll need a form of transportation to see most of Block Island’s roughly 10 square miles of land. Renting mopeds, bikes, and Jeeps are all options on island, but the best bang for your buck and time is to BYO. Bikes are $7 each and a standard vehicle is $80, both roundtrip, on the Block Island Ferry. Note that cars require advance reservations and to be checked in on dock an hour prior to the traditional ferry’s departure. BlockIslandFerry.com
The Beachhead is not only conveniently located down the street from the town beach, it’s crazy delicious. Seafood is a must-order here. BeacheadBI.com 1:15pm: Pull up to the beach There are plenty of reasons why Fred Benson Town Beach is the best beach in Rhode Island. Free admission, white sand, clear-as-day water, hot showers, and on-site chair and umbrella rentals are a few of them. It’s also one of a few beaches where dogs are allowed, which just adds to the chill vibe. Grab your lunch, along with your beach chairs and towels from your trunk (you packed those, right?), and plop on the sand for a little down time. 3pm: Explore New Harbor Block Island has two harbors on opposite ends of the island: Old Harbor, the town’s busy hub that the BIF arrives in, and New Harbor, the serene and preferred landing spot for boaters. Head to Champlin’s, a large resort that houses BI’s largest marina, several dining and drinking options, and a boatload of water activities. Kayaks, paddleboards, and bumper boats can be rented for the day or by the hour. Pick the watercraft of your choice, and go explore Great Salt Pond for a few hours. ChamplinsResort. com 5pm: Go shopping in Old Harbor Head back to the downtown-like area in Old Harbor for some retail therapy. Dodge and Water streets are full of artisan boutiques, surf shops, jewelers, and novelty apparel that will
Surf Hotel on Water Street
remind you – and your friends – that you had the best day ever on Block Island. 6:30: Dinner at the Surf Hotel Head over to the Surf Hotel, just a few steps from the downtown shops, and be sure to get a table on their outdoor deck. Directly overlooking the beach, the views here are pretty spectacular — and so is their simple, yet flavorful menu filled with steaks, fish, and lobster. This is what vacation is all about. TheSurfHotelBI.com 7:45pm: Return car to dock You booked the last ferry of the day (because YOLO) and once again you need to get your vehicle loaded an hour prior to departure.
8pm: Grab a nightcap Ballard’s is less than a five minute walk from the ferry’s landing, and the perfect place to close out your island day. Be it a quick appetizer or a tiki drink, you really can’t go wrong at this expansive beachside resort – unless you lose track of time and miss the ferry. Overnight stays on the Block are highly recommended, but are much better when they are planned. Good thing you have an hour of ferry time to start plotting out your next trip. BallardsBI.com 9pm: Depart for Point Judith Pat yourself on your sun-kissed back, sit back, and enjoy your ride back to Galilee.

Kind of a
BIG DEAL
In an Internet retail, post-Benny’s world, Ocean State Job Lot relies on its value and values
Photos courtesy of Ocean State Job Lot
By Bob Curley
W
hat exactly is a “job lot”? Invariably, it’s the first question people ask about Ocean State Job Lot (the second being, “Where do you get all this stuff?”). But what Job Lot isn’t is also important to the story of this Rhode Island institution, which recently celebrated 40 years in business and has become one of the most successful discount retailers in New England.
A job lot is an industry term for merchandise grouped together for purchase or sale, often “stranded inventory,” in the words of Ocean State Job Lot marketer David Sarlitto, who also heads the company’s charitable foundation. What the company adamantly is not is a salvage operation like its one-time rival, Building #19, which fell to bankruptcy in 2013.
“There’s a misconception that our goods are old or low-quality,” says Alan Perlman, who co-founded the company with his brother, Marc, and business partner Roy Dubs in 1977. Nor does Job Lot only sell closeout goods, although that is part of the business. For every overrun or lot of products that wasn’t selling fast enough for manufacturers on Job Lot’s shelves, you’ll also find first-quality items that the company’s buyers — including a team based in China — simply ferreted out at a good price at a trade show or bought directly from the manufacturer, cutting out the middleman and passing on the savings to customers. “It’s difficult to run a store with only closeouts,” says Perlman, “I’m less concerned about whether it’s an import or a purchase or a closeout, than whether it’s a value.” The first Ocean State Job Lot store opened in North Kingstown in 1977, and the company slowly but steadily expanded into Connecticut, then Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, and New Jersey. Today, the company has 131 stores, $700 million in annual sales, and a 1.2-million-squarefoot distribution center at Quonset Point. Just 16 of the stores are in Rhode Island, so increasingly it’s the “Ocean State” part of the name that’s more puzzling to consumers than “Job Lot.” How those stores are organized is an important part of Job Lot’s success story: unlike other retailers or supermarkets, which map out every square foot of their retail space and charge companies hefty fees for shelf space, “a good chunk of our space is devoted to deals,” says Sarlitto. “It’s almost like a store that floats.” That flexibility allows Job Lot stores to stock a broad and eclectic variety of goods depending on what the company’s buyers have been able to acquire, from bird seed and aluminum pans to gazebos and kayaks. There’s an interesting origin story behind almost every item you’ll find in a Job Lot store. Buyers got a big lot of Wise potato chips after the snack food company decided to change a package size; Job Lot took both the chips and rolls of foil bags imprinted with the old serving size at a big discount. Job Lot undersells Stop & Shop on Polar Soda because it uses its own trucks to pick up the cans of flavored seltzer and soda from the beverage company’s Worcester manufacturing plant. And you may recognize some of the rugs from Building #19 — Job Lot bought their stock of floor coverings during bank42

ruptcy proceedings. Seasonal goods also make up a huge portion of Job Lot’s inventory. Often, buyers will acquire seasonal goods from manufacturers offseason — summer goods in October, November, or December, for instance — and a company that views throwing anything away as sacrilege needs the ability to store items like pool chemicals from year to year, so they can be restocked for when the warm weather arrives and people start thinking about swimming again. Job Lot’s mammoth Quonset distribution center has 44-foot ceilings and storage space for 88,000 pallets of goods. Some merchandise, like food, moves in and out quickly, thanks in part to a 2.5-mile-long conveyor system (picked up cheap, of course — it was originally purchased by Target as part of a failed foray into Canada). On the other hand, Jeff Enright, Job Lot’s director of supply chain logistics, likes to show off the 250 pallets of belts that have been sitting in dusty boxes in the distribution center for the last seven years. “If we can’t sell them all in one year we’ll bring them back, because it was a good deal,” Enright explains. Eventually, what’s left will likely get donated to charity. To understand Job Lot’s extensive charitable giving program, start with the fact that Sarlitto’s background is in marketing, not philanthropy. The Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation has no formal staff, with its giving program fully integrated with the company’s retail operations. “The same skills the company uses to buy clothing or gazebos or kayaks are used to support philanthropy across eight states,” says Sarlitto. Charities the company works with — primarily food banks, but also veterans’ and health care organizations — can place “orders” for needed goods through Sarlitto, who also works closely with Job Lot buyers and manufacturers to source items like olive oil, peanut butter, and healthy cereals that food charities need for their clients. That’s how Job Lot came to deliver truckloads of gourmet cheese — creamy Camembert, rind-covered Brie, nutty Gruyere, and more — to local food banks last year. Cheese isn’t something Job Lot normally buys — it lacks both refrigerated trucks and store shelves — but the manufacturer knew how closely the company works with groups like the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and offered up the goods. “This cheese normally sells for $6 to $25 a pound; it was all within the sell-by date, but the manufacturer had too much stock on hand and was looking for a way to deplete it quickly, so we bought it at a fraction of the price and donated it,” says Sarlitto, who arranged for the cheese to SORhodeIsland.com • August 2018

be drop-shipped directly to the charities’ refrigerated warehouses. The cheese story perfectly illustrates the kind of creative purchasing that Job Lot buyers do every day. “We’re not afraid to try anything,” says Marlene Bellini, the company’s senior merchandise manager and buyer. Sometimes, that means buying fidget spinners directly from Chinese factories just as that fad hit its peak; other times, buyers will even pick up pallets of unidentified goods from trusted sellers and figures out how to sell the stuff only when the boxes are opened. Job Lot has thrived even as old rivals like Building #19, Benny’s, and Worcester-based Spag’s have fallen by the wayside and national competitors like Big Lots have arrived in New England. “We’re opportunistic in everything we do,” says Enright, right down to buying warehouse storage racks at 16 cents on a dollar, and using secondhand radios acquired from an offshore drilling company after the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The company’s strong roots in the communities it serves are reflected in one

of its familiar charitable giving programs, which saw 30,000 winter coats donated to homeless veterans. “We got a good deal on Totes coats and put them on display for customers at $39.99,” Sarlitto recalls. “They could get a Crazy Deals card for the same value or could give it back. I’d say 99.9 percent gave it back — some people would take their Crazy Deals gift card and put it in the pocket of the coat, or turn around and use it to buy other accessories like hats and scarves.” “Generosity feeds on itself,” he says. Finally, Job Lot succeeds because of the relationships it has built with suppliers over the course of four decades, buyers who are empowered to take chances, and a fierce dedication to providing good deals to customers. Pointing to warehouse racks full of the kayaks that have become a signature seasonal item at Job Lot stores, Enright explains, “We have to convince people that what we put out there is a good value, not that it’s a great kayak.” “We consider our integrity more important than any one deal,” says Perlman.

Moules & frites – steamed mussels with fries – from Red Stripe in East Greenwich
Move Over
Oysters Mussels have their day in the sun thanks to pioneering harvesters and chefs in South County
By Bob Curley • Photography by Michael Cevoli
Mussels just never got the attention that
and that’s something we’ve tried to change
oysters and clams did,
have long had a home in M ussels European cooking, found as a key
ingredient in bouillabaisse, the traditional Provençal fish stew, as well as paella, the ancient communal meal of Spain. Likewise, moules & frites – steamed mussels and fries, for non-Francophones – is the national dish of Belgium and also served widely in France. In the US on the other hand, their reputation was a little more prosaic. “In the seventies the only people eating mussels were a few folks on Federal Hill,” says Michael Rice, PhD, professor of fisheries and aquaculture at the University of Rhode Island. “Most everyone else saw mussels as a nice bait.” Then, during that same decade, greater appreciation of Mediterranean food reintroduced Americans to these native bivalve mollusks, which grow in abundance all along the New England coast and into the Canadian Maritimes, long-valued by Native Americans for both their meat and shells. Not as sensual as oysters or as widely eaten as clams, mussels have nonetheless come into their own in Rhode Island thanks in large part to a pioneering (and booming) aquaculture company in Quonset Point, American Mussel Harvesters, and the Red Stripe restaurants in East Greenwich and Providence, where moules & frites has long been a signature dish on the menu. “In Rhode Island, everyone knows clams,” says Greg Silkes, manager of American Mussel Harvesters, as he leads me on a tour of the company’s Quonset Point shellfish processing and distribution center, which sends more than 100,000 pounds of farmraised and wild-caught mussels to restaurants all over the country each week. “Oysters have been a big fad in the last ten or fifteen years; branding really drives sales, because they can be raised a mile apart and taste completely different,” says Silkes, whose father, Bill, founded the company in the late 1980s. “Mussels just never got the attention that oysters and clams did, and that’s something we’ve tried to change over the last 30 years.” Silkes, as you might imagine, is pretty pumped about mussels, pointing out that Mytilus edulis, the saltwater blue mussel, typically packs 40 grams of protein and 1,500 mg

“Mussels are a good introduction to shellfish,” says Raso. “They’re not as chewy as a littleneck or as slippery as an oyster. They have a more consistent texture, are more delicate, and are always eaten cooked.” - Perry Raso, owner of Matunuck Oyster Bar

Plus, they’re tasty. “Mussels are cheap, and they’re good,” says Red Stripe Executive Chef Rachel Klein as she sails through a late afternoon culinary tour of the restaurant’s ten distinctive preparations of moules-frites. “Mussels are looked at as not very sexy, but they’re very tactile: I like to eat with my hands, and I’ve prepared them in all different ways,” she says. “Every restaurant has something it’s known for and at Red Stripe mussels are it,” says Klein, who took the lead in the kitchens in May 2017. One thing she didn’t mess with was the mussels, which in other chef jobs she has prepared Normandy-style in a puff pastry and steamed in a curry coconut sauce and served with shrimp toast. “We take pride in our mussels,” says Klein. “They’re not an afterthought.” Red Stripe’s menu ranges from classically simple preparations like Moules Poulette (parsley and chive, garlic, shallot, white wine, cream) and Mariniere (thyme, shallots, garlic, leeks, white wine). The house preparation is steamed in Red Stripe beer (of course); a Grecque version features Ouzo, fennel, lemon, coriander, garlic, shallots, and olive oil); and local favorite – the Portuguese – which features a rare red-sauce thanks to the addition of cherry tomatoes and shards of imported chorizo. Unlike oysters, there’s not much flavor variations with mussels, says Mike McGovern, chef de cuisine at Red Stripe. “They’re a medium to carry everything else they’re cooked with,” he says. Thanks to decades of marketing by the Canadian government, the smaller Prince Edward Island mussels are the best-known variety in the US. “They taste good, but it’s hard work to get a bite,” says Klein, who prefers to use the larger mussels raised and farmed in Narragansett Bay and Cape Cod by American Mussel Harvesters. These mussels grow in the water for about two years and then are either dredged from natural beds on the seafloor or gathered from the lines where they are raised from seed. Chefs have limited options in mussels, especially compared to the dozens of varieties of oysters available. American Mussel

Harvesters sells but three — their medium-sized Whitewaters, large “Big Ones,” and the farm-raised, premium Blue Gold. Each is sold “restaurant-ready,” with processing that includes filtering with UV-treated water for 24 hours to remove sand and other impurities and running the mussels through a machine that removes the unsightly “beard” that the mollusks use to attach themselves to rocks, docks, and boats. American Mussel Harvesters’ other local customers include Providence’s Nick’s on Broadway, Spain of Narragansett, and the Newport Restaurant Group, including their flagship Providence seafood restaurant, Hemenways. Even Matunuck Oyster Bar owner Perry Raso, who famously farms his own oysters, prefers to buy his mussels from Silkes rather than trying to raise them himself. “They’re not expensive, and are fresh and local,” he explains. “Mussels are a good introduction to shellfish,” says Raso. “They’re not as chewy as a littleneck or as slippery as an oyster. They have a more consistent texture, are more delicate, and are always eaten cooked.” Plus, an order of mussels at Matunuck Oyster Bar costs about $14 for 1.5 pounds of shellfish, totaling between 30 and 35 mussels — more than enough to share around the table without breaking the bank. By comparison, a “buck a shuck” for oysters is considered a bargain at your local raw bar. Finally, mussels are easy to make at home. You can buy them at Dave’s Marketplace, Gardiner’s Wharf Seafood in Wickford, Captain’s Catch in Warwick, or directly from American Mussel Harvesters if you order ahead. You can even hand-harvest mussels yourself from the bay. “Look for them in areas with good water circulation and minimal boat traffic,” says URI’s Rice. The East Passage of Narragansett Bay, which is where Silkes has his farm, has some particularly healthy mussel beds. “At low tide, you can see them right on the rocks,” he says. “Just be sure they’re from clean water.” The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management maintains up-to-date maps on areas of the bay where shell-fishing is safe. When it’s time for dinner, “Start with garlic and shallots in the pan,” says Klein, then deglaze the pan with alcohol and add your favorite herbs or other flavorings to the resulting savory blend or umami. The steam from the liquid is what cooks and opens the shellfish; cooking only takes about four minutes with this method. Roasting is another option, though none of the chefs we spoke to recommend a fried mussel, and they say raw is out of the question for both health and flavor reasons. “A lot of people don’t know how to work with mussels, but you just put them in when the liquid starts to boil,” says Silkes. “It’s such an easy thing to cook.” Adds McGovern: “As soon as they open up, they’re good to go. Just steam them, open, and savor."

It Takes a Stylish Village Christina Pimental of Westerly’s Christina LTD on supporting a creative community
Christina Pimental found retail by fortunate accident. She was helping her father renovate his recently purchased Watch Hill home in 1987, “back when houses were affordable in Watch Hill,” she says, when a woman who became her mentor suggested she should open a store. “I was 22 at the time, and I figured it would be easy to do,” Christina says. “It was a huge learning experience. I just loved people and unique items.” Now, after running her Watch Hill store for over 30 years, she’s saying goodbye to beachfront retail to focus on her downtown Westerly location and helping other emerging creatives get their start. We blend it like a painting. That’s why people constantly see the store change. We always have some project going on. What’s “Local Love Shared Space”? We try to curate local. My passion is for stuff made in New England, especially in Rhode Island. those years ago. With a little support I was able to launch a 31-year-old business. I really want to give back. We’re very big about supporting small business and sharing. Tell us about Vintage Green, your private label denim. We hand patch a lot of the denim we carry, adding embroidery or different fabric, and turning old jeans into skirts. We used to make dresses and quilts from vintage sheets. I love to take shirts and completely deconstruct them, adding different sleeves or embroidery. That’s where I want to turn my attention now, back to that one-of-a-kind custom stuff. There’s such a cool vibe happening in Westerly right now. Downtown is full of good vibes and new stuff. I’m very excited to be here. I think there’s a lot happening. It’s on the cutting-edge of restaurants and taverns. I would love for more retail to be open late. You have a huge beach community and there’s not so much to do at night. My last customer on the night before the Fourth of July was 11 pm. We stay open until the last customer leaves. I always say, “bring your kids, bring your dogs, there’s nothing you can’t touch in here.” We’re working on adding App Nights with local restaurants, and we’re bringing in taps, so people will be able to have a really cool experience. What’s with those mystery boxes? They’ve been with us about 20 years. We always have one or two of something left, so we put them in Chinese food takeout containers and sell them as mystery boxes that cost anywhere from $1 to $5 to $12. You never know what you’re getting. It’s like turning the handle on the trinket machine. It’s a fun thing we’ve always had.

A young family brings energy and a New Mexico aesthetic to North Kingstown
Nearly six years ago, a young couple embarked on a house hunt that took them to various South County towns. Though they came across a few prospects, they weren’t able to find a home with the modern amenities and open floor plan they were looking for within their budget. They did find, however, a peaceful and private piece of land in Slocum Woods located in the southern end of North Kingstown. That’s when things took a new direction and the couple concluded that the expense it would take to renovate an existing home to their tastes far outweighed the cost to build. “Building was always kind of on the bucket

The couple turned to Meridian Custom Homes based in Providence to turn their ideas into reality. “They came up with some designs and we tweaked them to make them personal and unique,” they explained. “We knew we’d never use a formal living room, so the kitchen is twice as big [as usual].” As the couple both have family from out of town, they opted to have a partially finished basement which includes a bedroom, bathroom, den, big screen television, and surround-sound so that guests feel welcome and comfortable.
Now with three children, the couple makes great use of the bonus room over the garage. One parent is a former teacher and has outfitted the space with cubbies filled with toys for the kids as well as teaching materials. The couple bought a majority of their home components including fixtures and furnishings online. They ultimately found that having access to so many choices was both a blessing and a curse. “That was the most complicated – there are almost too many choices out there,” they say. They also acknowledge that as a young
family, they know their needs are going to change greatly through the years, so the couple calls the home, which they describe as Modern New England style, a work-inprogress. As the husband originally hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico, he admits there is a distinct influence when it comes to his taste in design and decor. He points to the earth tones inside the house that are reminiscent of a Southwest color palette, interior stonework, and outside, the extensive patio and outdoor kitchen space. “One of the biggest changes for me is that in New Mexico, it can snow or be in the 50s in January in the same day, but you’re outside year-round for the most part,” noting that even in winter, you may be grilling at the barbeque or find the family roasting marshmallows over the fire pit.

Whole in One Disc golf in Ninigret Park is relaxing, outdoorsy, and basically free
A “disc” is a plastic saucer, smooth and thin, with tapered edges, like a discus. If you throw it correctly, the disc slices through the air at alarming speeds, slipping between branches and landing gracefully in a patch of grass. After flinging the disc a few times, the coup de grace is a final toss into a wire basket, perched on a pole and festooned with chains. All you need to play disc golf is a single disc, available at various sporting goods stores for $15 to $20. The investment is longterm; each disc is nearly indestructible and could last generations.

In a past life, I was obsessed with disc golf. After a five-year hiatus, I arrived in Rhode Island with a renewed hunger for hurling saucers through the woods. When I heard about a disc golf course in Ninigret Park, I waited impatiently for my next day off, when I could drive down to Charlestown and give it a whirl. From a distance, disc golf looks no more athletic than regular golf. You throw, you walk, you pick up your disc, and you throw again. The “tee” is a patch of concrete or a chunk of railroad tie, and little maps guide the trajectory of your “drive.” The game is

Try disc golf in Ninigret Park
Our Farm Fresh Veggies simple and slow, and players don’t even need to catch the objects they lob. But for me – and other enthusiasts – disc golf is a full-body experience, especially on a humid, 95-degree day in the coastal woods. Eighteen “holes” adds up to a lot of hiking, mostly along rugged trails. I crisscrossed the meadows and copses, following signs from basket to platform. Once a disc hits the air, it’s easy to lose, and I spent untold minutes rooting through dense brambles. My clothes were soaked in sweat, and I chugged from my Nalgene bottle. The real magic of disc golf is how it blends with a regular park. The Ninigret Disc Golf Club has existed since 1996, but players leave a modest footprint. If you’re not looking for metal baskets, you might never even notice them. Hikers passed, cyclists pedaled by, and hordes of children splashed in the nearby pond. We barely crossed paths, but there was the occasional “Good afternoon” and “Hot out, isn’t it?” Except for the rules and terminology, disc golf is nothing like regular golf, which thrives on sprawling exclusivity. Disc golf costs next to nothing, and it blissfully coexists with every other parkgoer. Playing a round is basically just a nature walk with a final score. By the time I reached my car, I was drenched in perspiration and dotted with dead gnats. My arm ached from use, and even my contact lenses had fogged up. But I felt sublime, as if I’d stepped out of a hot yoga class. Disc golf is great in pairs and groups, where you can gossip and cavort; yet it’s also a luxury to escape the hubbub – scrambling through the woods, silently assessing distance and velocity. When the car stereo automatically came to life, I realized how much I’d relished the quiet, and I already started scheming my next trip back.

COME FOR THE FOOD, STAY FOR MORE FOOD The Charlestown Seafood Festival celebrates 34 years of the best the ocean has to offer The point of a seafood festival is to eat seafood, and in South County this month, there will be an ocean’s worth. For its 34th year running, the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce Seafood Festival will overflow with lobster, crawfish, shrimp, and oysters. If it’s a saltwater creature that you can stuff in a loaf of bread, you will likely find the sandwich you desire. You can roam among the tents and displays, feasting on marine bounty until your belly is full – or your wallet is empty, whichever happens first. There’s nothing like a seaside summer day in South County, set against the tree-lined backdrop of Ninigret Park.
But there’s more to the Seafood Festival than the food. The weekend is packed with live concerts, including tribute bands Welcome to the Jungle and Shot of Poison, and if your stomach can handle the centrifugal force, you’ll find a range of carnival rides as well. We encourage visitors to chow down throughout the day, enter a raffle for a free lobster, then take in the fireworks on August 4. In the meantime, feel free to burn off some calories climbing the rock wall or paddling a kayak. You can even take the whole weekend; for $125, visitors score four nights at the camp ground and two admission bracelets. August 3-5. Ninigret Park, Charlestown. –Robert Isenberg

dishes. Just in the appetizer section, there were more items I wanted to try than I could possibly eat. To make it easy, we started with the Mediterranean Meze Plate ($12.95) and Homemade Pita Bread ($1.95). On the meze plate there were small portions of eggplant, hummus, ezme, lebni, stuffed grape leaves, and kalamata olives. We loved everything on the plate, but the clear favorite was the eggplant. It had been fire-roasted, giving it a nice charred taste, and was blended with tahini, garlic, and olive oil. Ezme is a sauce of chopped tomatoes, peppers, onions, parsley, pomegranate, walnuts, and olive oil; it’s kind of a Mediterranean salsa. We wished we had a spoon to get every last bit out of the ramekin. Lebni is Lebanese strained yogurt (which makes it extra creamy) with finely chopped mint, garlic, and olive oil – and it was ridiculously good. All of these sauces were tasty, but when put them on the freshly baked pita, they became divine. We watched the staff make pita by baking it in the wood-fired oven. If you’ve only ever had grocery store pita before, try this; you will be in for a real treat. It’s so good, you might want to order two servings. For our main dishes, I went with the House Specialty Kibbe ($9.95). Kibbe, at least the Turkish version of it, is a fried ball of bulgur wheat
Pita with Chicken
stuffed with ground beef, lamb, onions, and parsley. This version was a bit on the spicy side, but that just added to the depth of flavor. My mother decided on the Stuffed Zucchini ($11.95), which is filled with rice, ground beef, and ground lamb and then is topped with a fresh garlic-tomato sauce. My father opted for the Shish Chicken Dinner ($13.95) which came with grilled chicken kabob, chickpea rice, parsley red onion relish, a small salad, pita, and yogurt sauce for dipping. He liked the chicken because he could make a sandwich out of everything, and making a sandwich out of something is his main goal in life. In the interest of good journalism, we also ordered a Steak Cappadocia Pizza ($13.45). It was prepared in the wood-burning oven and was covered in thin slices of steak, fresh diced tomatoes, hot pepper rings, mozzarella, parmesan, and a pepper sauce. There was also a fine sprinkling of rosemary on the pizza, which gave it a

A friend recently asked me on Facebook for a recommendation on where to eat in South County – but somewhere different. I wasn’t sure exactly what she meant, and I didn’t really feel my suggestions were different enough. So, when the magazine asked me to go review the new Mediterranean restaurant in North Kingstown, I wondered how distinct it would be from the usual North Kingstown fare. The only way to find out was to grab my parents and head there for lunch. Plenty is located on Post Road in North Kingstown, former home of the defunct Bess Eaton/ Tim Horton’s and, more recently, Bravo WoodFired Pizza. The drive-through window still hangs off one side of the building, and the kitchen is dominated by the large brick oven, which had been specially constructed for Bravo. The decor inside isn’t fancy, but it is clean and modern, and televisions on the wall display pictures of menu items (a big help for people unfamiliar with this kind of food). The service was friendly and helpful. We felt like welcome guests; a feeling a lot of restaurants forget to impart. The restaurant does not have a liquor license, but I had a fun time sampling the Turkish iced tea ($2) and the Turkish orange soda ($2). We spent a good fifteen minutes reading over the menu, because there were so many interesting

Did you grow up in South County? My family moved to South Kingstown from Long Island when I was nine. I ended up working on the water in junior high, digging clams for a summer job. After a detour to Colorado, I went to URI and studied aquaculture and fisheries technology. What made you decide to open a restaurant? It was an accident. I bought the restaurant because I needed the commercial dock space. I figured I’d open a restaurant and
see what happened. Someone put in my ear that if the restaurant wasn’t open by July 1, don’t even bother. So, I pushed to hit that deadline. I thought it would be a very small operation — we didn’t even have a manager. We were kind of ragtag. But we were busy right off the bat. Did you have time to do this beautiful renovation before you opened? The restaurant looked completely different when we opened. We had a fish market where the bathrooms are now — we sold lobsters, fresh fish, oysters, of course. The bar area was the entire restaurant. Over the years we built out and renovated a little at a time, staying open while we did it. This is the end result. In addition to your oyster farm, you recently added a vegetable farm. What prompted that? We were buying produce from local markets and weren’t able to buy enough to keep up with demand. So, we decided to grow it our-

In less than a decade, Perry Raso transformed a small restaurant with dock space on Potter Pond in South Kingstown into Matunuck Oyster Bar, which CNN called one of the best oyster bars in the US. Inside his nautical-chic restaurant, the unassuming oyster farmer and accidental restauranteur shared his favorite oyster pairing, discussed his extensive menu collection, and hinted at bigger things to come for South County’s quintessential farmto-table eatery.

selves. We still rely on the local farms to supplement what we grow. You have the oyster farm, the restaurant, and the vegetable farm. What’s next? I’m working on building an oyster hatchery, so we can have complete control of the life cycle of the oysters. Do you ever sleep? I get a few hours a night. You said that when you first opened, you looked to restaurants you loved and studied. Do you have a favorite? Elliott’s Oyster House in Seattle or Island Creek Restaurant in Boston. Hard to pick from those two.

What’s the best way to eat an oyster? Raw with nothing on it. If it’s your first time, squirt some lemon, have some cocktail sauce. But I love to taste the brine, to taste the aquaculture where it comes from. Did you know you were mentioned on Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop? No! It’s called Goop? That’s hilarious. You have a very extensive and impressive wine list. Thank you! I like to think of us as a clam shack with upscale options, and that includes our wine list. I wanted to make sure that it was extensive but also affordable. It’s what you’d pay for a decent bottle at the corner wine store. What wine pairing would you recommend to go with the oysters? Champagne and oysters is an old standby, but I’m not a champagne guy. Muscadet or Sauvignon Blanc are more traditional pairings with shell fish. But I prefer a nice Chablis.

Castaldi Financial Solutions Some other restaurants serve a handful of Thai dishes, but South County’s only purely Thai restaurant is Tong-D in South County Commons. They serve Thai favorites like Lemongrass Tom Yum Soup and Pad Thai, but there’s so much more to their extensive menu – noodle dishes like Pad C-U and pineapple fried
rice, curries like spicy green, coconut red and peanut massaman, along with chef’s specials of duck, seafood and more. The restaurant also offers extensive gluten-free and vegan menus in their gorgeous space. The food is some of the most authentic in the state, and definitely worth a drive to have a taste.
