KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER Providing you the classic salon experience since 1977

in 1985 opened our second location in East Greenwich. We expanded in East Greenwich in 1996 and then again in 2010 and became the Best of Rhode Island salon and spa that you still enjoy today 35 years later.

All Hair by Kenneth Cote

1980s

But through all the changing styles and fashions, the ups and downs of the economy, six American presidents, the invention of the internet, etc. one thing has remained consistent: our focus on you. Our salon culture is still based on the core principles of teamwork, ongoing education, customer service and outstanding services at reasonable prices. Your salon experience is classic.

1990s

Celebrating 35 Years: 1977-2012 I’m Kenneth Cote. I’m a professional stylist, salon owner for 35 years and a father. In 1977, I was a busy stylist trained in the relatively new Vidal Sassoon technique of precision hair cutting. The Dorothy Hamill wedge and Farrah Fawcett flip were the rage. When I looked around most salons at that time were still operating as 1950s beauty shops… not very uptodate with the latest trends… not very professional. I decided I wanted to create a different type of salon culture for myself and for other stylists. I wanted to create a new salon experience for Rhode Island clients. So I decided to open my first salon on North Main Street in Providence above a poodle grooming parlor called Puppy Luv! It was a labor of love. I had a mission. I wanted to enhance the professionalism of the salon industry in 1970s Rhode Island and provide fellow salon professionals a work environment that focused on camaraderie, teamwork and ongoing education. And guess what… it worked! I became a guest artist for Redken Labs and had the honor of traveling the world teaching American hairstyling techniques. We did fashion shows and models and politicians and television personalities.. we even styled the hair of the first female President of Ireland! As our reputation for providing uncompromised outstanding services grew, we moved to Hope Street and

2000s So visit us today for the first time, or the hundredth time, and experience the culture that helped shape the salon industry in Rhode Island. We were the first and the original and I would argue that we’re still the best. My staff and I will prove it to you each time you visit us so call us soon. Visit our website for special offers and thank you for being part of this amazing journey these past 35 years.

Then all of a sudden summer is over,

From Our Readers Going Green I noticed my mother’s issue of SO Rhode Island, the annual kids’ issue, was about going green [“It’s Easy Being Green,” April 2012] and I wanted to inform you of a group of students that I am a part of. The name of our group is the Jr. WIN Team and our project is called TGIF – Turn Grease Into Fuel. Our project is a sustainable initiative to collect waste cooking oil and convert it into environmentally friendly biodiesel, which is then distributed to local families in need of heating assistance. The team was formed in 2008, and has been ongoing ever since, working to expand the project throughout Rhode Island and Connecticut. We collect the waste cooking oil from nine public receptacles (which we lobbied to install) in Rhode Island and Connecticut, as well as receive donations from over 100 restaurants. Over four years of hard work, we have distributed a total of 14,400 gallons of biodiesel, with an approxi-

mate value of over $56,000. The team has also gained national and international recognition for our efforts. In 2010, we traveled to Washington D.C to meet president Obama and to receive the President’s Environmental Youth Award. Last year, we traveled to Gothenburg, Sweden to represent the United States in the international Volvo Adventure environmental competition. With the help of Representative Kennedy, we drafted a bill to encourage the recycling of used cooking oil. The bill was passed last year and went into effect in early 2012. Recently, we expanded the size of the group and our goal is to raise awareness of and potentially use biodiesel in the Westerly school bus fleet. For more information, please find us on the web at www.w-i-n.ws, at projecttgif.com, or on Facebook at “Jr. WIN Team-Project TGIF.” Miles Temel Jr. WIN Team, Westerly Middle School

surfing and skateboarding as far back as the ‘50s. But if you’ve seen the movie Lords of Dogtown, you know longboarding boomed for them in the ‘70s. It took its time coming east, but it’s now here with a passion. It’s probably no surprise that longboards are longer that skateboards, but their main difference is the ride. Riding a longboard is like water surfing on solid surfaces. You don’t have to jump off, as you do on a skateboard. You can slide down. And there’s real speed, which owner of Karma Longboards Chet Rogers emphasizes. “It’s speed vs. turns,” he says, when he compares longboards, which are capable of traveling 50 miles per hour, to skateboards. You can ‘boardwalk,’ ‘dance,’ ‘carve,’ and ‘land paddle’ on your longboard. Never mind how; Chet can tell you, and make you a board. A carpenter for 10 years, he designs longboards “with particular skills in mind,” he says. But this isn’t California, and moving West Coast cultures east can be a bumpy ride. Dedicated longboarders speak of longboard communities, with standards and rules of behavior

that ensure safety and coexistence within the larger community. But here, longboarders struggle with dubious geography and occasional bad attitudes about sharing the road. Good

pavement and low traffic are arguably longboarding’s key essentials, but they can be hard to come by on our crowded, weather-beaten streets.

Chet and his comrades continually scout for good hills and moderate traffic. When ‘surf’s up,’ so to speak, on South County hills and dales, Chet recommends no more than four longboarders for the “playful racing” that comes naturally. Helmets, gloves and pads are essential to the fast action, aided by simple hand signals, like pointing to potholes and holding out fingers for the number of approaching cars. Chet speaks passionately about longboarding’s camaraderie, which he says, “is unmatched in any other experience.” He adds, “I can’t describe the inner freedom and peace – the oneness with the road, nature and the environment.“ Chet’s singular hope is for longboarding to become a recognized, respected sport, instead of denigrated as dangerous activity. He envisions an East Coast version of Maryhill, the legendary 2.2-mile speedway dedicated to longboarders in Washington state. “Here it’s a slow, uphill battle,” he says. Then he smiles and adds, “but then that’s part of what longboarding is.” www.facebook.com/woodenantz –Bob Cipriano

Katie McAlister has been into food, community involvement and sustainable living her whole life. So when the opportunity to manage the Cross Mills Farmer’s Market in Charlestown came along this year, she jumped at it. There were urgent matters, of course, like enticing lots of new vendors to participate. But McAlister also managed to step back a little to see the big picture, and took a long, hard look at the community around the market. Establishing a “supportive, creative, community environment” that would link the farmer’s market to the Charlestown community, appeal to tourists and speak creatively about sustainability, became her vision. Possibly it was the time she spent in

Europe, or maybe her training in nutrition, yoga, meditation and yoga therapy, or, who knows, maybe it was her URI college years making pizza and working the counter at Kingston Pizza. But somehow she evolved into a visionary, bringing “a lifestyle idea,” as she puts it, to work in a local farmer’s market. “Charlestown has no Main Street,” McAlister says. Old Post Road is the token town center, but there’s no real Main Street atmosphere. She’d like to ignite that atmosphere, with Cross Mills Farmer’s Market at the center. People can experience sustainable living, exchange ideas and have a really good time there, then carry on down the street. She hopes she’s creating a model for other similar

rural communities. Go, experience alternatives to everyday living in a vibrant center for adults and children: Navigate among more than 20 local vendors’ and farmers’ goods, including vegetables, fruits, lotions, honey, meats, pastries and more. Open Fridays from 4-7pm, Saturdays 9am-1pm and Sundays 10am-2pm, Cross Mills Farmer’s Market features special themes each day. Fridays bring local acoustic musicians to the market. Storytellers and other activities for kids take center stage on Saturday. On Sundays, food recipes, cooking demos and the like take place. 4219 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 860-617-2588, www.crossmillsfarmersmarket.com -Bob Cipriano

Erasing Traffic in Wickford Commuting to and from Wickford has just got much simpler: say good-bye to the days of sitting in stop-andgo beach traffic. In April, Governor Chafee and Senator Reed helped celebrate the grand opening of the Wickford Junction Train Station and Garage, Rhode Island’s newest commuter rail facility. Chafee says of the station, which will provide weekday MBTA service to Warwick, Providence and Boston, “Infrastructure projects such as this make Rhode Island more economically competitive, create short-term and long-term jobs, relieve congestion on our heavily traveled roads, and improve quality of life.” This project is a key component of South County commuter rail expansion and was designed to get vehicles off the Route 4/Route 195 corridor.

Reed says, “Even people who don’t take the train will benefit from less traffic and better air quality.” For those who do choose to take the train, passengers can board an inbound (to Warwick T.F. Green, Providence or South Station) as early as 4:50am and as late as 10:10pm. Fares range from $2.25 each way from Wickford to Warwick, $2.50 each way from Wickford to Providence and $9 each way from Wickford to Boston. (Prices are scheduled to increase slightly on July 1.) Discounts are offered for children, seniors and those with disabilities. Monthly passes are also available. More information about ticket prices and train schedules can be found online. 1051 Ten Rod Road, North Kingstown. 294-0020, www.wickfordjunction.com –Erin Swanson

ISLAND ESCAPE

Treasure Hunting on Block Island Working out of an old-fashioned gas station in Wakefield, Eben Horton churns out an array of unique and classic glass designs. Taking his talent outdoors, Eben decided to create the Block Island Glass Floats Project, the first of its kind. Eben will be hiding 200 grapefruit-sized glass orbs throughout Block Island beaches and trails. These glass floats will be stamped with a classic Block Island shaped imprint, dated and numbered. 100 floats will be scattered throughout the beaches, and the additional 100 along the Greenway trail system. Starting on June 2, locals and visitors

are invited to ‘hunt’ down these orbs – finders keepers. The only restriction is that participants may only keep one per person. These floats will not be collected, so the hunt continues indefinitely. Eben hopes to make this an annual event and in starting the project off with a bang, he has made 12 of the 200 floats specially colored. Next year there will be 13 specially colored orbs and the following year, 14… you get the trend. This is an event you won’t want to miss out on, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled this summer when you’re on BI. www.blockislandinfo.com, www. ebenhortonglass.com. –Emily Gardner

You could volunteer also to transport goods for their special ReStore or to make lunches for the building site crews. Proceeds from the event fund current and future martial arts scholarships. Registration is $20 and the first 250 registrants receive a complimentary t-shirt and goodie bag. Little Rhody’s Big Star

American Idol’s Erika Van Pelt

A South Kingstown songbird headlines national Idol summer tour Story and Photography by Marylou Butler

When a little girl with a big voice was moved up to sing in the adult choir at church, that was the first inkling there was some big talent inside that tiny package. Erika Van Pelt, who recently finished as one of the top 10 finalists on American Idol, has had all of one formal voice lesson in her entire life. At age seven, a voice coach taught her a Disney song and after Erika sang it flawlessly, the teacher told Erika’s mother she was out of her league. It seems like she didn’t need lessons at all. With singing in her DNA (her sister Sarah and brother Colin also have

great voices) and music in her blood (according to Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine) South Kingstown’s Van Pelt went on to be selected in all four years of high school to All State, All New England and All Eastern choruses. Not wanting to kill the passion by studying voice, she opted for a degree in music production at Berklee College of Music. “I saw too many people losing the fun of singing by studying for a voice degree,” she said. “I figured if I took production then I would stay involved in the music business and learn to do my own recordings.”

That degree led Van Pelt to start her own mobile DJ company. She has spent the last few years working six nights a week at various locations throughout New England, spinning tunes and leading karaoke. She also traveled with the wedding band Sultans of Swing as the lead singer. It was on a trip to a wedding in Palm Beach, Florida in Novemember 2010 that her road to American Idol actually began. “I hadn’t had any time off in a long time,” says Van Pelt, “so I decided to stay behind and take a couple of days alone at Disney World.” There she found an attraction called The Ameri-

can Idol Experience. “It perfectly mimics the show,” she says. “Guests can sign up to sing in competition or to judge from the audience.” She chose to sing. If you win a round you get to go on to the next one later in the day and again and again as the competition keeps going into the evening. The winner gets a dream ticket to use at any American Idol audition to jump to the head of the line. Erika sang her way to the winner’s spot. The next auditions for the real American Idol show were being held in summer 2011 and Pittsburgh, PA was the closest to Rhode Island. After a nine-hour drive, June 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

Van Pelt got to audition as 30 out of 13,000 people. Even though it was daunting to walk out there and sing in front of Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, Erika said it wasn’t until Hollywood Week that it all started to seem real to her. “Up until then it seemed like more like a dream,” she says, “then 309 of us, out of tens of thousands who auditioned, were sitting in the theater and the show’s director came out and said ‘look around, the next American Idol is in this room.’ That’s when it really hit home.” Even though Hollywood Week was more like hell week, Van Pelt says that it was her favorite time on the show. “It was such a pressure cooker, so much stress, no sleep. I honestly thought that having toured with my band, I had a little bit of Navy Seal-like training for what I was going to go through. But there

was no way to prepare; it was sheer, overwhelming panic and I just had to throw myself into the fire.” And throw herself in she did, getting first into the top 40, then surviving into the top 25 and finally finishing in the top 10, which won her a spot on the American Idol tour this summer. Van Pelt describes herself as blissfully ignorant the first time she stood on the montrous stage where American Idol is filmed. “Everything is so elaborate and the crew makes magic happen there,” she said. She underwent a number of style changes during her time on the show. A girl who likes her hoodies and Converse sneakers found herself thrown into five-inch stilettos and leather jackets. Hair up, hair down, hair blonde, hair brown. “I’m going to change my hair and my clothes a million times, I always have, but if I can move

people through song then that is what is important to me.” From a voice that Idol mentor Mary J. Blige called “steak and potatoes,” there is that beautiful, rich tone in the alto range. Van Pelt is a lover of all genres of music, giving her a well-rounded education and execution. Her favorite genres to sing are R&B and Blues but as judge Randy Jackson said, “she can sing the phone book.” “All I wanted to do was to build a solid body of work on the show,” says Van Pelt, “something that I would be proud of on YouTube.” Her performances on the show were well received by the judges and music critics and so that work will live on. During the summer tour of the top 10 finalists, the performers will have more say over their song choices and wardrobe than they did on the show. Erika is looking forward to bringing her Batman Converse sneakers with her on tour although she is afraid that another Idol finisher, Colton Dixon, may try to steal them. “He’s a little obsessed with them,” she said. She will also be bringing on tour with her a Green Hill hoodie, courtesy of Graphic Expressions of Wakefield, and some sparkly accessories courtesy of Spangles. A little bit of Rhode Island is going to go a long way. To see more of Erika visit www.erikavanpelt.com. For more information on the American Idol tour visit www.americanidol.com. Clam Shack

If there’s one thing that says summer in southern Rhode Island, it’s walking off the beach and straight to an outdoor clam shack. That plate of piping hot fried clams (or scallop roll or fried shrimp… just don’t order chicken fingers) is the quintessential taste of summer in the Ocean State. That’s why it’s first on this list. In Galilee, Point Judith supplies fresh fish for the entire state. Watch those boats come in from either of the two venerable restaurants directly off Salty Brine Beach: Champlin’s and George’s of Galilee. The takeout window at George’s allows you to carry your order back to your beach chair; the casual deck at Champlin’s means you can easily go there in your bathing suit without raising any eyebrows. The same goes with Monohan’s at Narragansett Town Beach – it’s an easily walkable distance, and all of the seating is outdoors. If you’re at Scarborough, though, you’ve got a tough choice. Aunt Carrie’s, with its ocean George’s of Galilee views and 90 years of serving quintessentially Rhode Island food, or Iggy’s, with its convenient walk-up window and irresistible doughboys. You’ve got a whole season in front of you – go to both. Champlin’s: 256 Great Island Road, Galilee. 783-3152, www.champlins.com. When was the last time you treated yourself to an honest-to-goodness ice cream cone on a hot summer day? We’re not talking about something from your freezer or some soft serve you got while your kids feasted on sundaes. No. A napkin-wrapped, dripping with decadence ice cream cone. This is your year to do it – but do it right, with locally-made ice cream. It’s a win-win: not only are you supporting local businesses (and the local dairies, growers and suppliers they in turn support) but it just tastes better. What’s not to love? In Wickford and North Kingstown, The Inside Scoop’s homemade treats have been racking up awards for years, including the distinction of being a Yankee magazine Editor’s Choice. With locations in Wakefield and Bonnet Shores, Brickley’s has been making fresh ice cream daily – and in 45 flavors – for almost 20 years, and has received the same honor. Nana’s Gelato, in Pier Marketplace, even does beach delivery to Narragansett Town Beach. Not only is their gelato made in-house, but their iced coffee is made with coffee ice cubes: perfect for sipping from a beach chair. In Rhode Island, we’re unusually blessed to have so many local food producers in such a proximate range. A 15-minute drive can take you from an oyster farm to a producer of high-end beef to any one of numerous, high-quality vegetable growing operations. Chefs already know and take advantage of this, and you can taste the difference in the food they prepare. But if you’ve never gone straight to the source and bought food from a farmer’s market, this is the year to do it. Farmer’s markets happen all over South County, and almost every day of the week: Mondays at Academy Field in East Greenwich; Tuesdays at Marina Park in Wakefield; Wednesdays at the Exeter Public Library; Saturdays at URI’s East Farm in Kingston and Casey Farm in Saunderstown; Sundays at Fishermen’s Memorial Park in Narragansett; all weekend long at the Cross Mills market in Charlestown. Farm Fresh RI, an advocacy group for local growers, has a searchable database of the 45 local markets it promotes on its website, www.farmfreshri.org.

3

go to a

Farmer’s Market

Sure, the markets have fresh from the farm fruits and produce. But they also have breads and cupcakes baked that morning at local bakeries, South County-raised meats, seafood reeled in that very morning, handmade crafts, art and beauty products. Some have live music and entertainment for the kids. Plus, if you’ve always wanted to know precisely what to do with rhubarb, there’s no better time to ask.

When the weather is this beautiful, you want to be outside as much as possible. Luckily, you’re not alone. Grab your beach chair – or a blanket and a picnic basket – and head to an outdoor concert or play. Nothing beats watching the sunset to a live soundtrack on a sultry summer night.

Wilcox Park in Westerly is worth a visit at any time, but sees several kinds of festive gatherings in the summer months. On June 23, the park hosts the 32nd Annual Summer Pops Concert by the Chorus of Westerly, which includes artillery demonstrations and fireworks with the concert. In July, the Colonial Theater stages its annual Shakespeare in the Park performances. This year, Macbeth runs from July 11-29. On June 17, July 25 and August 24, the park hosts Town Band performances. www.chorusofwesterly.org, www.thecolonialtheater.org, www. westerlylibrary.org/park

The granddaddy of summer outdoor concerts is Charlestown’s Rhythm and Roots Festival. Taking place over all three days of Labor Day weekend (August 31-September 2) in Ninigret Park, this Cajun and Zydeco music festival brings in national acts, like this year’s host band, the Pine Leaf Boys, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops – not to mention thousands of attendees. www.rhythmandroots.com Rhythm and Roots

Blessing of the Fleet

This summer, more than others, has a distinctly nautical theme to it. People are already buzzing over the Tall Ships returning to Newport from July 5-9, but the celebration lasts longer than that in South County. On June 21, head to the sea wall in Narragansett for the South County Regatta. July 27-28 sees the return of Narragansett’s Blessing of the Fleet, which includes a road race, seafood festival and actual blessing of ships. If you’re more of an air person than a sea one, check out the RI National Guard Air Show from June 16-17 in North Kingstown. www.oceanstatetallships.com, www. southcountyri.com, www.narragansettri.com, www.riairshow.org

Arts festivals are another beloved local tradition, and there are quite a few to choose from. Make it a point to check out at least one this season. Narragansett’s Fine Art Festival takes place from June 23-24 this year. Wickford Village brings its Art Festival back for an astonishing 50th year from July 7-8. In Kingston, the Chamber Music Festival returns to URI from July 18-29. From August 7-12, film takes center stage as the Rhode Island International Film Festival returns to movie houses all over the state. See hundreds of independent and short films from all over the world – and then see them again when they’re nominated for Oscars next year. Wakefield’s Arts and Entertainment Festival, which includes arts and crafts as well as live music, comedy, theater and dance performances, happens August 10-18. www. wakefieldrotary.org, www.wickfordart.org, www.kingstonchambermusic.org, www.film-festival.org, www.thecontemporarytheater.com

Water Sport

Living in a place with nearly 400 miles of coastline and the Atlantic stretching as far as the eye can see, not to mention countless rivers and ponds, you’ve officially run out of excuses not to get on the water this summer. You live in the Ocean State, after all. This year, spice up your plain old swimming and learn something new. If you’ve always wanted to sail, take lessons from the URI Sailing Center, which offers lessons in all skills levels to both kids and adults all summer long. 783-0797, www.uri.edu/recservices/sailingsummerlessons.html Once you’ve learned the ropes (and the jib, and mizzenmast, and the – say it with me – poop deck), test out your skills on a sailing charter. Royal Crustacean Charters offers daily sails for small, private groups out of its East Greenwich mooring. If you’d rather hone your fishing skills, fishing charters abound. Frances Fleet offers private fishing trips, and the 80-

For locals, there are two traditional ways to think of tourists: as the people who support our economy by visiting to appreciate all that South County has to offer, and as the people who make us late to everything for three solid months because they clog up the roads. This year, don’t complain about them: join them. Take a tourist’s view of southern Rhode Island and explore something you haven’t seen before. The Rhody Ramble is a project running through September that was designed to bring kids and families closer to Rhode Island’s heritage. There are 18 participating sites in the state, including the Babcock Smith House Museum in Westerly, Watson Farm in Jamestown, the Old Washington County Jail in Kingston, Paine House in Coventry and Smith’s Castle in Wickford. Keep track of your progress and find out about special contests at www.rhodyramble.org. For a bit of active fun, take the family to one of the area’s fun centers. It’s known as RI’s only ski resort, but Yawgoo Valley outdoor recreation facility has plenty to offer in the warmer months, too. Yawgoo’s water park offers pools and water slides. When you need a break from the beach, head to Westerly’s Water Wizz, the state’s other water park. Six water slides offer varying degrees of thrill, from the giant waterslides to the little dipper. Adventureland, a family fun complex in Narragansett, is the kind of place where any kid can have a good time. A carousel, batting cages, mini-golf, an arcade, bumper boats and go-karts will have them playing to their hearts’ content. Yawgoo: 160 Yawgoo Valley Road, Exeter. 295-5366, www.yawgoo.com. If being on a boat doesn’t seem quite extreme enough for you, challenge yourself by conquering something new. Skydive Newport, which makes its home at the Newport Airport (which is curiously in Middletown), offers tandem skydives with experienced instructors. If you’re lucky, you’ve got one big summer trip that you’re looking forward to. Why not think a little more locally to add in more travel? Rhode Island has its own tropical escape that’s just 13 miles offshore. With the majority of the land preserved as wilderness and natural habitats, and the locals’ fierce protection of its beauty and historicity, Block Island is an unspoiled gem in the truest sense. Miles of hiking trails, pristine beaches and historic preservation sites will fill your days. Your nights? Live music, al fresco cocktails on Dodge Street, a pint at the island’s own brewery. Rubbing (and Scrubbing) Away the Stress

Fraction of the Regular Price Narragansett’s Best Kept Secret!

Illustration: Jennifer Kindell

Finding much-needed relaxation After realizing that I was long overdue for a trim, I went to the salon and asked my hairdresser to work her usual magic on my frazzled tresses. It was at the sink, with my head tipped back and her fingers tangled in my wet hair, that I heard these words: “Relax your head.” My noggin was tipped back and securely nestled within the chair’s molded cradle. “It is relaxed,” I said. “No, it’s not,” came the reply. I sighed, knowing that her statement was true. It can be hard to let go of the physical and mental stress that builds up everyday. Clearly, another thing that I was miserably overdue for was a massage. I was dying to check out Spa Thayer, which opened a few months back at the Narragansett Pier Marketplace. Owner Deborah Thayer greeted me in the serene waiting room, with a warm smile and a spa-requisite whisper. I immediately complimented her regarding the location (just footsteps from the beach) and the chosen color scheme (shades of blue and tan). It’s clear that Thayer has a love for the sea. In fact, the 90-minute treatment I was about to undergo is appropriately named Ocean Dreams. She informed me that I would receive not only a massage, but also a full body scrub and hot stone treatment, designed to relieve stress, smooth my skin and relax my body and mind. She left me to disrobe (to my comfort level) and hop onto the bed, face up. The room was tiny, with a high ceiling and fan that blew a gentle breeze onto my face. Nestled between some sheets and towels, the temperature was just right. My knees and neck were supported by bolsters, transforming the massage table into an I’ve-diedand-gone-to-heaven berth of comfort. Soothing instrumental music filled the

space. The door opened and in padded Thayer, quietly tip-toeing around as if walking on air. After ensuring that I was comfortable in both body positioning and climate staging, the treatment commenced. First, she rubbed my head and neck – you remember, the parts of me that don’t know how to relax – and a funny thing happened; my muscles started to loosen up, and so did my mind. She kneaded my shoulders with firm pressure (as requested), and then introduced me to the hot stones. Aah. For those not familiar with this procedure, it’s a multi-sensory experience: One part tactile, one part olfactory, one part auditory. You’re met first by a charcoallike smoky smell and then next by the sound of two stones clacking together. Finally, the rocks make contact with your skin and all your cares cease to exist. For a worry-wart such as myself, this is a well-received attribute.

The body scrub had a lavender hint, and it sloughed away my dead skin cells, making way for fresh skin to poke through. My arms, legs, feet and back all underwent the same regimen: Rub, rock, scrub, repeat. Finally, it was over. I cried. (Just kidding.) I got dressed and met Thayer back out in the sea-hued waiting room. She held out a glass of water for me and told me it was important to hydrate after massage. I asked about the popping I heard while she worked on my back and was told that was the adhesions – the build-up of lactic acid – working their way out. I was well aware that I also carried stress in my back (hours of being hunched over a computer keyboard) and was happy to send it on its merry way. Thanks to Deborah, I’ve been cured of my non-ability to relax – just ask my hairdresser. 9 Pier Marketplace, Narragansett. 792-0001, www.spathayer.com.

That’s adorable. Has this always been the career you’ve planned for? I wish it had been. When I graduated from high school, the expectation was that I would study business in college. I’m grateful for my business experience, though. I always say that interior design is one-third beauty, onethird math (just because you love it, doesn’t mean it will fit) and one-third business acumen. What do you do when you’re not working? I have two elementary school-aged children and my husband and I love to take them kayaking, hiking and geocaching. We love to be outdoors. I also have wanderlust, so we are heading to Iceland soon.

How would you describe your style? I think of it as classic with a modern twist. In a project I’m working on now in Kentucky, I accessorized a pair of traditional Lawson-style gray sofas with Trina Turk apple green embroidered pillows. I love modern colors, especially on accessories, but I think every room should have one old thing in it. I also want everyone to know they can afford original art. Oh, I could go on and on. Please, do go on. Where do you find furniture to finish a room? Wickford is a treasure trove of antique and consignment stores filled to the brim with unique finds. I’ve scored several inexpensive oil paintings that were both underpriced and perfect for the space I was designing. Massachusetts’ Brimfield Fair is also incredible for unique finds, as is Route 6A on Cape Cod. And browse the Internet, where, literally, everything is available.

What’s the craziest room you’ve ever designed for a client? Rhode Island really isn’t a hot spot for crazy design requests – we are New Englanders, after all. But some unique projects have involved designing around challenging existing elements like brightly colored wall-to-wall carpet, a large furniture piece with sentimental but not stylistic value, or an oddly-shaped room. But when it all comes together at the end, it’s so rewarding. Do you have a favorite design, one that was truly rewarding? One of my favorites was a coastal kitchen, which required a complete overhaul of the layout, changing the locations of windows and doors and removing a faux fireplace. It was an amazing transformation in only six weeks. Speaking of coastal, are you inspired by nautical or ocean themes? I’m absolutely inspired by our seaside location. But I’m not someone who believes in theme decorating. When you walk into one of my seaside designs, you know the ocean is nearby – but it’s not because a decorative sign on the wall says, “Welcome to the Beach.” It’s about color, texture and light.

See any trends for this summer? A trend I am seeing in general is the move away from ‘landfill furniture.’ For several years, consumers were buying an abundance of cheaply made furniture from China. It was meant to look stylish but it was not built to last. There was not a mortise and tenon or dovetail joint in sight. People should know that quality does not have to mean unaffordable – don’t go right to the Furniture Warehouse sofa because you don’t think you can afford something better. Shop around. A quality neutral sofa is an excellent investment. After all, I’ve had my living room furniture for nearly 12 years and it’s still great. Lastly, what inspires you when you suffer from designer’s block? Inspiration is everywhere, from the highbrow to the everyday. I recently attended a house tour in Newport – six historic mansions that featured everything from rock crystal chandeliers to green lacquered walls. Tons of inspiration. On my way home that day I passed a magnolia tree with the palest pink flowers and thought, “I can’t wait to use that pale pink in a design.” I never know where inspiration will come from, I just keep my eyes wide open. www.nortonobriendesign.com

Finishing Touches

How did you get started as an interior designer? I really started as a kid. I used to ‘play Barbies’ by making a Barbie house out of an empty cardboard box and designing furniture and bedding for it. But I don’t think I ever actually played with the dolls themselves.

Eagle’s Nest Gallery

Retail Dreams A retired couple turns their gift shop dreams into a successful reality

Photography: Amy Amerantes

For many, the thought

of retiring conjures images of sandy beaches and sunsets fading into blue horizons. But for Gail Desrosier and her husband Tom, owners of The Eagle’s Nest Gallery in Westerly, retirement is all about working for themselves. “We started our business in 2006 when Tom retired after 33 years as a Commander in the US Navy Submarine Force,” says Gail. “In May of 2010 we expanded when the business next door moved down the street and we were able to open up the wall to acquire more space.” The Eagle’s Nest Gallery is now a prime spot for anyone looking for “Made In America” products, including East Providence’s John Medeiros Jewelry Collection. Other such items include necklaces, rings, greeting cards, gifts, blown glass, beach towels and more. In addition to being a leading Trollbeads retailer, The Eagle’s Nest Gallery is the area’s largest seller of the Vera Bradley Sterling Silver line (which includes silver-faced watches set in signature patterned straps). With summer swimming into the Rhode Island harbor it’s only appropriate that The Eagle’s Next Gallery stocks a wide range of beach products. “We are currently anticipating a great summer season at the beach and parks,” says Gail, “so we have everything to make a perfect picnic.” Their summer selection includes vinyl beach totes for an easy trip to the ocean and sarongs, or flip-flops, for keeping your feet safe

from the sun-baked sand or tar. Feel free to ask Gail or Tom any questions while browsing through their selection. After all, Gail herself loves talking about personal style: “I always carry either a Vera or Brighton or Danny K handbag, and I wear John Medeiros and Trollbeads jewelry. I enjoy wearing Eliza B sandals in warm weather and use Camille Beckman lotion.” The Eagle’s Nest Gallery supports the Wounded Warriors Fund through donations for gift wrapping. Gail and Tom also offer a 10% discount for all retired and active duty members of the military. This deal is in addition to their Frequent Buyers Club program, which is open to all customers, and gives $20 off purchases totalling more than $200. Selling “Made In America” products is what makes The Eagle’s Nest Gallery unique, though it is their commitment to supporting local artists that sets them apart from the competition. Rhode Island is ripe with up-and-coming artists and The Eagle’s Nest Gallery is proud to stock their shelves with funky, homemade, artistic pieces of jewelry, pottery, sculptures and more. Beginning a small business in today’s economy may be a risky endeavor, but Gail and Tom are pouring their heart and soul into their dream. With six years under their belt, they are proving that mom-and-pop shops still have a place among today’s economic climate. 50 High Street, Westerly. 5965386, www.theeaglesnestgallery.com.

HOME AND HEARTH: The open floor plan puts focus on the expansive kitchen area

Salt Pond Paradise

Photography: Melissa Stimpson

A summer home for now and for the future Art and Betty Arnold know a thing or two about building houses. In fact, their century-old family business, Arnold Lumber, has provided materials for countless homes throughout Rhode Island and beyond. So when the couple bought a humble cottage on South Kingstown’s Salt Pond, they saw more than just a vacation home; they saw possibilities. However, the house wasn’t properly insulated: “We could only use [the house] very sparingly,” Betty explains. “We didn’t get the full use of the season, and if it was a gloomy day, it was damp and freezing. Finally, we decided after six years to just knock it down and start from scratch.” The Arnolds turned to architect Nancy Leslie of Wakefield to design a home that was as elegant as it was unfussy. As the property is on a body of water, Leslie was tasked with working within the rigorous confines of Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Management Council and the Department of Environmental Management’s regulations for environmental

protection, as is standard with waterfront and watershed properties. “So the goal was to fit as much living space as possible in a relatively small space,” Leslie explains. The solution, she says, was to build up instead of out, and to weave in elements that offered the illusion of more space. “We elevated the ceilings to let the space feel more expansive,” Leslie says. “We also kept the kitchen, living room, and dining room all in one area,” surrounding the open floor plan with oversized windows. It’s an approach that worked well for the Arnolds. “I wanted one big room because we’re a very large family,” says Betty. With three adult daughters, a few son-in-laws and a brood of six grandchildren whose curiosity sends them to the shoreline to catch crabs and critters in the shallows, the home had to be functional, comfortable and able to handle the pitter-patter of sandy feet. Wes Deane of Highland Builders (based in Tiverton) was commissioned to build “Reel Point,” a three-bedroom home

with rooms situated to capitalize on million-dollar views. Named after the serene expanse of land on Salt Pond, Reel Point is the combination of architectural skill, smart craftsmanship and Art and Betty Arnold’s taste and experience. The kitchen was the predominant focal point from the outset, and though Betty undoubtedly knows how to please the palate, Art is the one most in his element there, slicing and dicing to his heart’s content. “My husband and our son-in-law, Kate’s husband – he’s a chef from France, she met him in cooking school – always love to cook, so they have great competitions,” she says with a laugh. The space can accommodate both comfortably, with a professional range, expansive counter space and an oversized island. “The kids catch crabs on the rocks with hot dogs on a string and we can go out and dig quahogs, cook ‘em up and make chowders.” A pizza oven is built into the far wall, made entirely of indigenous stones, bringing the outside in and adding a

layer of texture to the neutral-hued space. The smooth, gleaming surface of the vanilla quartz and granite countertop reflects the sunlight and is neat and uncluttered. “I think it’s from South Africa,” she notes. “I mostly chose it for the color palate, of course. I had a hard time finding something I thought was going to go, and then to also pull in the color of the stone behind it.” Betty liked the tone of the white oak floors so much she had the dining room table hand-crafted to complement the natural wood. Similarly crafted chairs, fashioned to invite a rustic feel, are both comfortable and eye-catching. “This I actually had made because I knew exactly what I wanted,” she says of the table. “It’s made from reclaimed white oak – you can see the worm holes and everything. So my husband said, ‘It’s got holes in it,’ and I said, ‘Yes, and you paid extra for it.’” “Simple and clean,” is how Betty describes the white cream and taupe tones throughout the first floor. the entire design scheme’s modus operandi, as the Arnold’s objective was to let the surrounding coastal milieu take center stage. “We wanted to capture the views,” she explains. “Every room you go into in this house has a view of the water.” She also depended on the styling talent of daughter Kate, who owns Seaside Casual Furniture in Coventry, a division of Arnold Lumber Company. While Seaside Casual Furniture focuses on outdoor furnishings, Kate’s talent extends to interiors as well. “She was a great asset,” says Betty. Together they selected bold fabrics for throw pillows and accents in the bedrooms, including the children’s bunk room, which can sleep six. “Each child has their own reading light, and then, because everybody is so technological these days, they each have plugs for their iPods and all that.” Reel Point was designed to be easy to maintain now and in the future. “We tried to keep the house green so that moving forward, the investment will be minimal for the girls to be able to keep the house in the family,” says Betty. Environmentally-friendly foam insulation allows the Arnolds to control the

indoor air quality, while geothermal heating and cooling increases its energy-efficiency. “It’s so easy; I never have to touch anything. It’s a smart home, we just set it and go. You come in and shut the alarm off and the heat automatically comes on; it’s maintained at a certain temperature all the time.” An extended deck invites outdoor dining and entertaining, and is equally simple to maintain. “All our trim outside is Azek, so we don’t have to paint or do anything to it. We really tried to keep it functional,” says Betty. “What’s really nice is – for the most part – everybody is outside all the time in the summer, but… winter nights down here are beautiful and we come in the fall. We visit year round.” “Everybody comes and they all love it here,” Betty says with a smile. “It’s the family house and we hope to always keep it in the family, and that’s what it’s designed for, to be able to share going forward.”

So Delicious | Foodie Journal

By Linda Beaulieu

Eating for Health

Photography: Laurel Mulherin

A new approach to weight loss in East Greenwich Raise the Bar Nutrition is a new “community club” where people gather for good health and nutrition. The store offers healthy meals (in the form of delicious weight-loss shakes), energizing teas, free wellness evaluations, nutrition coaching, a weight-loss challenge and a fit club. The store’s four owners are Bethany DiPetrillo (of Smithfield), Amanda Couture (of Warwick), Charlene Viola (of East Greenwich) and Jessica Williams (of North Providence). They’ve all been wellness coaches in the past with their parent company Herbalife and met through that. DiPetrillo and Couture both began as clients. At 22, DiPetrillo was diagnosed with a heart condition – it was difficult for her to simply climb a flight of stairs. “I got on it for good nutrition,” she says, “not just to lose weight. At the time, I was on three different medications, and told I’d need them the rest of my life.” After a short while on the program, her symptoms started to dissipate; just two years later, she is off all of her medications and is currently training for the San Diego marathon. “I have a nursing background,” DiPetrillo says, “and I was never into products and supplements. But these work. I’m proof of that.” Couture lost 30 pounds and 40 inches, strictly from the diet. “I was able to come off of my asthma medications in just four months,” she says. Shakes are the core of the program. Some people are interested in a free evaluation, some just dive into the service head first. The weight-loss challenge group meets every Wednesday at 6pm, with the next challenge geared to start in late June. For those more interested in fitness, a 14-day bulk-up and bikini challenge is starting mid-May. They also do fit clubs, which meet every Sunday at 8am. The fit club bootcamps, held at Goddard Park, have no begin/end date, so people are encouraged to “hop in whenever.” They are open every day of the week, providing breakfast, lunch, a supportive ear and helpful advice. Questions? Call or stop by. 333 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-5433, www.facebook.com/ RaiseTheBarNutrition JUICY TIDBITS There are plenty of juicy tidbits on the local food scene this month.

An East Greenwich native, who now operates restaurants in New York state, plans to invest more than $25 million to debut a bakery-café concept to compete against Panera Bread and other “fastcasual” dining outlets in Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut. Glenn Beattie, who with his wife Tina are among Denny’s restaurants’ biggest franchisees, will open the first of six Corner Bakery Cafés in Rhode Island by the summer of 2013. Each cafe will be roughly 4,000 square feet, with indoor seating for 125 and out-

to accommodate diners on the first and second floors, as well as on its new 1,100-square foot rooftop deck. Owner Kenneth Tetzner says he’s hoping “the martini crowd” will stop in, especially before and after performances at the nearby Contemporary Theater Company. Dave’s Coffee is set to open at 396 Main Street in Wakefield. The coffee bar will serve espresso-based beverages, regular coffee and iced concoctions as well as baked goods. door patio space for another 25 or so patrons. Each will average 30 to 50 employees, meaning 150-300 new jobs for Rhode Island when all the locations open. Two South County landmarks are for sale. Ten acres of land on Narrow River in Middlebridge is available. On that parcel sits what is now called Logan’s Landing, a quaint little restaurant that in years past was known as Wiley’s and Duke’s at Middlebridge. Also available is Jessica’s Quick Rick’s at 58 High Street in Wakefield. I started going there back when it was simply Quick Rick’s, owned by Richard Lema. Rick moved south and sold the business to Jessica Masci. Phil’s Restaurant in downtown Wakefield has been granted a full liquor license

food operation, has opened at 83 State Street in Galilee. Co-owner Gabe Stommel is purchasing fresh fish from local fishermen and shipping it to restaurants within 24 hours. The new business provides seafood to upscale restaurants in New York, and she hopes to expand into local and regional markets. Check out her blog at www.gabethefishbabe.com. Jackie’s Seaside Café is the new spot on Boon Street in Narragansett, offering breakfast and lunch every day of the week and dinner on Friday nights. We’re looking forward to checking that out real soon. For years, we’ve been fans of The Mews Tavern at 456 Main Street in Wakefield. They now have an “After Work Party” Monday through Friday from 4 to 6pm

that’s pretty hard to beat. For the Beer ‘n’ Buffet, you can choose from one of the 69 microbrews on tap, and take a pass through their buffet for only $3. They also offer the M-and-M Buffet (martinis and margaritas), which includes a choice of a raspberry or white grape martini, a Cosmo or a Cuervo Gold margarita and a pass through the buffet for only $5. www. mewstavern.com David Roebuck now serves shucked oysters and raw bar items on-the-go in the Shuckin Truck in Narragansett. The seafood comes directly from the Roebuck family fishing vessels, Salt Pond Oyster Company and other local fishermen from the Point Judith area. Currently on the seasonal menu: Georges Bank Sea Scallop Roll, Block Island Lobster Roll, Point Judith Calamari, Black Sea Bass Stew, Codfish Cake Sandwich, Salt Pond Oysters and Clam Chowder. Watch for the Shuckin Truck at festivals and farmers’ markets. The rolling raw bar is also available for private parties and weddings. www.shuckintruck.com The Andrea hotel at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly has an intriguing new menu. All the basics are there as well as asparagus fries with a pepperjack fondue, clam fritter poppers and rosemary-skewered sea scallops finished with a drizzle of truffle oil. And that’s just for starters. Entrees range from baked scallops and haddock to grilled Cajun tuna and grilled sirloin topped with balsamic onions and blue cheese. The pasta dishes are tempting, especially the mussels zuppa served over linguine. A kids’ menu is also available, including nonalcoholic strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas. For reservations, call 888-318-5707. Mel’s Downtown Creamery in Pawcatuck is under new ownership; Dennis and Melanie Goggin bought the shop, located in the old Higgins Building. It’s a modern take on the classic ice cream shop of the 1950s, including a black-andwhite checkered floor, red walls, a jukebox mural and vinyl records as decor. The menu offers 29 ice cream flavors plus soft serve, ice cream cakes and ice cream pizza. They are open seven days a week from 11am to 9pm. 860-599-1363 If you have news dealing with food, restaurants or chefs, feed it to Linda Beaulieu at Lindab2720@aol.com. Catch of the Day A divine seafood menu by Jamestown’s chef du jour has become a dining destination, with restaurants at every price point. Chopmist Charlie’s and the Narragansett Café are among the most affordable. A step up would be the Oyster Bar. Then you have the venerable Trattoria Simpatico and the award-winning Bay Voyage Inn. And now, Jamestown Fish on Narragansett Avenue is at the top of that food pyramid. Owners John and Cathy Recca, who also own the Narragansett Café, are former equity traders on Wall Street. They have been coming to Jamestown for years, buying a home there in 1998. Too young to retire, they launched new careers when they purchased the Narragansett Café four years ago. They have definitely spruced up that beloved watering hole. Across the street, their newest venture replaces Tricia’s Tropi-Grille, a funky Key West-style restaurant that many of us were sad to see close. And what a transformation. Gone are the wild tropical colors. This neat historic building now sports a clean, serene look with a blue and white beach house color scheme, a handsome fireplace and an intimate bar with just four seats. Upstairs is the more casual bridge bar, with its view of the harbor and Newport in the distance. An outdoor bar and al fresco dining are also offered this summer. It’s quite apparent that a great deal of money has been poured into this project… and the restaurant seems to draw a wellheeled crowd. The foursome next to us talked at length about their sailboats and vacationing on Harbor Island in Michigan and Palm Beach in Florida. (I

clearly love to eavesdrop.) Be prepared to spend some money at Jamestown Fish. Appetizers range from $10 for a spicy fish soup to $16 for the smoked salmon with a poached artichoke heart, sorrel sauce and pickled ramps. Entrees range from $22 for the minimalist linguine and clams, made without wine or butter, to $35 for the well-endowed Jamestown Fish Cookpot that overflows with lobster, mussels, clams, scallops, monkfish, leeks, tomatoes, saffron, garlic, hot pepper, Pernod, fingerling potatoes and chourico. The creator of all this upscale food is Executive Chef Matthew MacCartney. Early in his career, MacCartney worked at fine dining restaurants in France and Italy. Then he paid his culinary dues at top New York restaurants: Restaurant Daniel (as in Boulud), Gramercy Tavern and Tom Colicchio’s Craft. The Reccas got to know MacCartney while he was the chef at the highly acclaimed Connecticut restaurant Pasta Nostra. When MacCartney moved to Rhode Island for Jamestown Fish, he took along his sous chef Heliovaldo Araujo. Another sous chef, Keith O’Marra, rounds out the formidable team in the semi-open kitchen. The highlight of my dinner from that kitchen was the Clams and Oyster appetizer ($15). I was served two raw littleneck clams, two umami oysters and two Beavertail oysters on a bed of crushed ice. The umami, which can only be found in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay, were especially savory, sweet, creamy and salty. The array of shellfish was ice cold, as it should be. Each clam and oyster had been expertly opened so that plenty of briny

European Cuttle Fish

liquor remained in every half shell, which made for ideal slurping. On the side were a zesty house-made cocktail sauce and a most extraordinary blood orange-wasabi dressing, which I ended up drinking in its entirety. There was no way I was going to let any of that incredible concoction leave our table. My dining companion had the spectacular Salumi Appetizer ($15), which was more than one person should ever eat, so of course I helped out. This was a generous plate of premium Italian cold cuts including speck (boned pork flank), culatello (cured pork rump), cacciatorini (salami from Lombardy, Italy), coppa (cooked and pressed cured boneless pork) and Napolitano salumi (cured meats), all from a salumeria in New York City. Slim slices of an unidentified cheese completed the dish – I would guess it was Atwells Gold from Narragansett Creamery. The menu promised cured olives, but there were none to be seen. After my superb raw bar experience, I moved on to the entrée, Soft Shell Crabs ($32). Our ever-smiling waitress, Emily, informed me that the crabs had been flown in from Maryland late that very afternoon. The two large pan-fried crabs were coated with Grenobloise sauce and served simply, almost starkly, on an oval white plate with sautéed spinach on the side. Grenobloise (that is, of Grenoble, a city in southeastern France) is a classic French sauce made with browned butter, capers, parsley and bits of lemon. I’m not sure if it was the crabs or the capers, but I found this dish to be salty. The fresh

spinach was perfect. On the other side of our table for two, the impressive King Salmon ($32) arrived. This was a large dish containing a good amount of line-caught wild Alaskan king salmon surrounded by a truly wonderful sorrel sauce. On the side was a bowl of farro, a popular grain in Europe: plump, chewy and nutty. A basket of warm rustic bread quickly disappeared as we dunked chunks of the dense bread into the subtle, creamy sauce that was studded with bits of the leafy green herb. Desserts are served for $8 each. A petite wedge of Lemon Polenta Cake was very lemony, while the Pastiera Napolitana (a pie made with fresh ricotta, wheat berries and orange zest) was a bit dry. So there you have it.s I think I’ll make another visit to Jamestown Fish someday soon. Who does what? Jess: We both do it all. Over the years, we have found our niches in each of the kitchens – I seem to always gravitate to Caliente and Ben to Burger Shack. Now, Wildwood seems to be getting all of our attention. But we get along and laugh the most when we work together. We push each other in all the right ways, constantly motivating one another to do more. Who is Jonathan Baskins? Ben: Jonathan came to us as line cook for Burger Shack; we knew he wanted more because he kept bringing his knife bag to work and wearing his chef coat, which can be out of character in a quick service environment. We have been kicking around this idea of a boutique catering company for a couple of years and he was the missing piece. We all clicked with our love for food and the West Coast – we were able to collaborate on recipes and menus together instantly. What makes Wildwood special? We want to embrace the fact that there are so many great food resources in Rhode Island and New England. It can be hard to apply this in a quick service setting, so we are excited to be able do so with Wildwood. Jonathan spent years in San Francisco and was really inspired by street food vendors and food trucks that used fresh, local and organic ingredients. He is now able to apply this philosophy when writing Wildwood menus. Which items are most popular? Ben: Our ‘one-bite’ hors d’oeuvres have been really popular. We’ve been taking classic dishes and deconstructing them

(From left to right) Ben and Jess Wood, and Jonathan Baskins

into one bite. The idea is to get a burst of familiar flavors with a creative twist. An example is the Steak N’ Potatoes: a homemade potato chip with grilled flank steak, Maytag blue cheese, red onion marmalade, micro greens and balsamic glaze. Another feature is our California B.L.T., which is a grilled cheddar crisp with bacon, tomato jam, chives and avocado mayo. Our sandwich menu has also been a hit; the Grilled Veggie seems to be the all-star. It features local focaccia and lemon herb mayo, with the herbs picked daily from our patio vegetable garden. This summer we will be able to use the zucchini and squash from the garden in this sandwich as well. Tell us your future plans for “farmer’s market to table” dinners. We are looking to partner with the Wickford Collection to do a summer series of farm-to-table hyper-local dinner parties. We hope to raise some money for a charity and provide our guests with a romantic and soulful experience.

What is it like to work with your spouse? Jess: It’s 90/10, meaning 90% great and 10% World War III. Ben’s usually the one with fire in his belly. But at the end of the day, we love the opportunity to do what we love with who we love. Who’s a better cook? Ben: Jess is a better conceptual cook but I can pump out food in any environment. Ask our two sons though and they’ll say me all the way! What is one tip about how to become a better cook? Read, read, read. Open a cookbook and read it as you would a novel. Seasoning is also so important; many people are scared to salt their food. Jonathan thinks it’s very important to not be intimidated by food. There is no “right way” to do anything – be creative and go your own way. Ben and Jess Wood own Wildwood Catering. 99 Fortin Road, Kingston. 935-9453, www.facebook.com/wildwoodcatering

You own Caliente Mexican Grill and The Burger Shack, both in Kingston. What made you open Wildwood Catering too? Caliente and Burger Shack have been a labor of love for eight-plus years now, and we felt like it was time to expand on the amazing team and knowledge we have gained over the years. Wildwood gives us an unique outlet to use these skills and apply some fun and creative twists into fresh and local foods.

A worldly gourmet shop Summer Hours: Monday-Saturday 10-6, Sun 11-5

Be Cool This Summer! A Woman’s Lifestyle Boutique Featuring: Eileen Fisher, Bryn Walker, Jag Jeans, Habitat, Cut Loose, Flax, Dansko & More! The Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company started as a result of one family’s passion for California olive oil. While the Gregoires were exploring the wine trail in Napa Valley, they ended up discovering the growing olive oil industry. Upon visiting various olive oil shops, they found that the oils they tasted were unlike anything they had ever tasted before. They described them as “pungent, fruity and fresh.” When they returned to the East Coast, their newborn passion for California olive oil came with them, and Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company was born. Michael and Jillian Gregoire opened the family-run shop on Memorial Day Weekend in 2011 in Wickford Village. The company’s mission is to bring the freshest and tastiest organic extra virgin olive oils to Rhode Island and it does just that. By buying oils and vinegars from small, familyrun farms, Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company can ensure freshness in its products. They only sell small amounts at a time so that the bottles are not sitting on the shelves for months. In addition to selling California olive oils and Italian vinegars, the shop offers eco-friendly skin and body care products. The company is big on taking green initiatives. They encourage customers to reuse their glass oil and vinegar bottles previously bought in-store by offering a 10% discount on any bottle refilled in the shop. Would you rather just recycle your bottle instead of refilling it? That’s fine too. Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company will offer a 5% discount on another bottle. They also use paper shopping bags, cardboard gift boxes and recyclable and degradable paper ribbon for all their gift packages. The Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company is also an active member of the Wickford Village Association, which aims to promote and protect historic Wickford Village. The company produces village maps, maintains upkeep on the flower baskets in town and runs the association’s website. The Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company is more than just a company that sells extra virgin olive oils and vinegars, they are a part of the community. They strive to better that community by donating to local organizations such as the North Kingstown Police Department, Cranston Historical Society and Central Baptist Church of Jamestown. The Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company is a company that is proud of where it’s from and strives to represent its pride in the state and the “waters that are so vital in our lives.”

SO RHODE ISLAND | June 2012

From 9 to 5

to four-part harmony and seven Von Trapps, you can count on a terrific time at Theatre By The Sea (TBTS) this summer. The five show lineup at the historic barn theatre promises memorable music, clever choreography and loads of laughs. As producing artistic director Amiee Turner puts it, “This is a great season, with each show really being a crowd pleaser. There is something for everyone!” First up, listen to an angelic quartet return - and croon - from beyond the grave. “Forever Plaid is one of the sweetest, most heartfelt shows I know of, with a joyous sense of humor and an unbelievable score,” notes Turner of the musical revue, playing now through June 17. Written by Stuart Ross, it’s the wholesome story of a ‘50s-era singing group whose dreams of stardom end suddenly. But death is no match for dulcet tones like these, and the boys in plaid get a second chance to harmonize on such golden oldies as “Rags to Riches,” “Heart and Soul” and “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing.” Next, see the sprightly Maria become super nanny to an unruly but adorable bunch of Austrians in the 1959 classic, The Sound of Music (June 20–July 14). Relive the romance of being “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” bid “So Long, Farewell” to a country on the brink of war, and delight in the simple pleasures of “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.” Turner directs the production, and calls it “the quintessential Rodgers and Hammerstein musical – inspirational and beautiful and perfect for the

whole family and multiple generations to enjoy together.” Then, prepare your press-on nails and shoulder pads for the Rhody premiere of 9 to 5: The Musical (July 18–August 11). The show is based on the 1980 film, with music and lyrics by the inestimable Dolly Parton – including the hit title track. Cheer as over-worked and undervalued colleagues seek revenge on their tyrannical boss… and live to tell about it. Turner reveals, “This is a really fun show that very few people have seen yet.” Don’t get up from that office chair just yet. The last musical of the TBTS season offers another comic take on scaling the corporate ladder, this time with a score by Broadway legend Frank Loesser. How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying (August 15–September 2) follows the zany journey of a young opportunist, from window washer to top executive. Turner considers it “an amazing coup that we were given the rights to present while it’s still running on Broadway.” She adds that it will have the biggest dance numbers of the lot. Keep laughing with the season closer God of Carnage, another RI premiere, onstage September 6-16. Written by Yasmina Reza, the award-winning comedy pits two pairs of parents against each other in an attempt to sort out a playground scuffle. Turner describes the contemporary satire as “a very funny look at how easily adults can resort to childish behavior.” Expect incredible, hand-selected casts to bring all five fun shows to life.

“We auditioned about 350 folks locally, 900 at the Southeastern Theatre Conference professional auditions, and 1,200 actors in New York City,” Turner reports of the arduous casting process for Ocean State Theatre Company, the not-for-profit producing arm of TBTS. “There is only a small handful of true ‘barn’ theatres still operating in the U.S., and we take great pride in the quality of our productions.” Turner, a Missouri native, officially moved to South Kingstown in ’08. She observes that, “Although the work we do is so often very high stress, South County is such a friendly and relaxed place to live and work. I love the constant surprise of truly amazing sunsets.” You can count on catching a few of those on the beautiful TBTS grounds as well. See you there, and save us a seat. June 21: We bet all you yacht-race lovers out there can barely wait for the 2012 America’s Cup World Series races to begin; start your celebrations a little early by going to see the first-ever South County 12-Meter Regatta Reception off the coast of Narragansett. The reception will take place on June 21 and will feature famed 12-meter America’s Cup winners (and contenders) during a day-long event, which will go from 2-8 pm. It promises to be an exciting kick-off to the international racing that will start in Newport on June 23. There will be a number of activities for visitors, including a reception at the historic Towers as well as local food vendors and music. There will also be a historical display of photographs, memorabilia and artifacts that will truly show Rhode Island’s storied yacht racing past. This display will be available for public viewing throughout the event. Views of the regatta will be spectacular along Ocean Road, the Narragansett seawall, Veterans and Gazebo Parks, and from Narragansett Town Beach. www.southcountyri.com

Frosty Beans Summer in South County means beaches, bathing suits and... iced coffee. You can’t go anywhere in the Ocean State without passing someone who’s gripping a plastic cup filled with deliciously cold coffee and ice. It’s addicting, it’s refreshing and it’s a warm weather must. We tested four kinds this month; read on to learn which fared best.

Cool Beans Café The strong aroma of fresh-ground coffee hit us before our noses even got close to the cup; there is no mistaking that this coffee is as fresh as it comes. The flavor was heady and robust, with a nice clean finish. 18 Kingstown Road, Narragansett. 7899500, www.coolbeanscaferi.com

Beach Rose Café Simon Says People rave about this neighborhood coffee shop, and it’s no wonder why. The coffee had floral notes and was light and mild. It’s perfect coffee for people who shy away from dark, bitter roasts as it’s not too strong or overly intense. 96 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-1965

84 SO RHODE ISLAND | June 2012

With its chocolatey aroma, we were immediately excited about this cup. We were happy with both the smell and the taste. The coffee had a strong flavor but a mellow finish – which is, of course, the best of both worlds. 85 Brown Street, Wickford. 2952800, www.beachrosecafe.com

TLC Coffee Roasters After operating successfully in West Kingston, TLC recently opened this second location. We were hoping the coffee tasted as good... and it did. The beans were clearly freshly roasted in-house, and the coffee had a nice smooth finish. 904 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 661-9108, www.tlccoffeeroasters.com
