Something to Bark About Anyone who loves a pet knows that they’re more than just man’s best friend: they’re members of the family. Granted, they might not do their share of the housework, but they’re impossible not to love. This month, we did some digging (see what I did there?) for ways to truly pamper your pets. From all-natural grooming and doggie resorts to holistic pet massage and animal birthday parties, it’s nothing but

the best for your four-legged loved ones. Here’s to wet noses, warm bellies and wagging tails.

Delicious Documentary A local filmmaker chronicles the tasty tale of Allie’s Donuts Allie’s Donuts

Photo (top) courtesy of Sage Ficazzola, (bottom) courtesy of Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission

in North Kingstown has been supplying Rhode Islanders and tourists with delectable sugary treats in a warm, family-owned environment since 1968. A new documentary by Sage Ficazzola and Kenneth Proudfoot gives an inside look at the history of this Rhode Island staple, which Sage calls “an inspiring and heart-warming story about one man [Frederick “Allie” Briggs]’s love for his wife and children, and the hard work and sacrifices he made for his family.” 20-year-old North Kingstown native Sage was inspired from a very young age to start creating his own movies; growing up, he loved the stories his mother would read to him and his twin brother, Forest. Later on, the twins started playing around with their father’s VHS camcorder, putting together little videos to tell their own stories. The hobby gained traction during Sage’s junior year Com I + Com II

class at North Kingstown High School, where his senior project was to create a short film. Post-graduation, he augmented his knowledge and skills by taking a few film production courses at CCRI. The concept for Allie’s Donuts: The Documentary, Sage’s first documentary, was born while Sage was employed as a production worker at Allie’s, but it was his filmmaking partner Kenneth Proudfoot who first came up with it. When Allie’s daughter Jane Miozzi heard about Kenneth’s idea, she recommended he touch base with Sage, whom she knew to be an aspiring filmmaker. Kenneth and Sage comprised the project team; Kenneth did the bulk of interior filming at the donut shop, as well as interview Allie’s wife, Lou (short for Lucile). Sage contributed additional interior filming and then edited the entire documentary, which took about

three months. “Editing is always a time-consuming process,” notes Sage. “There were many long nights where I just looked into my computer screen for hours on end. I felt like a vampire for a bit of time, because I like my office to be really dark when I’m editing,” he laughs. So far, the documentary has received excellent feedback and praise from the local community. Sage appreciates the support, especially that of his family, and says, “I’m really happy that everyone is enjoying it. I hope people will continue to follow my work, because I really do enjoy telling stories; in fact, I’m currently writing my first feature with my writing partner Jeffrey Worthington. My goal is to entertain, and because I love the way film and other media can make people feel.” www.Facebook.com/SageFicazzolaTV –Amanda M. Grosvenor

Getting to Know South County An annual historic conference seeks to familiarize residents with area history You can live your whole life in a place and never fully understand it, but the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission is always trying to change that. This year’s 31st annual Rhode Island Statewide Historic Preservation Conference, happening on Saturday April 30 in North Kingstown and Exeter, is all about Building and Preserving South County. There are walking, bus and boat tours, workshops, and lectures planned, all for only $40 – including lunch and snacks – letting you spend a day seeing a new, yet familiar side of our state. South County is unique because many of the first historic preservation efforts took root here, including the state’s first local historic districts and one of the state’s first historic house museums. According to Sarah Zurier, historian and a coordinator of the conference, the history of South County is

important to our common identity as Rhode Islanders because, “There are so many historic places, our favorite places, like Wickford Village, the local post office, etc. that are in the national registry historic district.” Everyday, Rhode Islanders interact with buildings that still stand, but more than that South County represents a shared history in Rhode Island and the nation, the good, the bad and the ugly. Sarah argues that “Slavery as an economic institution helped shape the landscape of South County.” The Keynote Speaker Dr. Joanne Pope Melish, an Associate Professor of History Emerita at the University of Kentucky, would agree with this assertion. The institution of slavery changed, and still continues to affect, the landscape of South County. It is important for Rhode Islanders to know the whole story, which will be explored in Dr. Melish’s keynote speech.

The End of a Chapter for Island Bound Bookstore Owner Cindy Lasser will be moving on from Island Bound Bookstore after 21 years Just a few steps

from the Block Island ferry dock, Island Bound Bookstore has sold books and art supplies, hosted great national writers and made sure there were always Jolly Ranchers in the candy dish. Owner Cindy Lasser loves that “parents can park at the store and the kids can come in by themselves”; you don’t see that in many mainland stores. For 21 years she has watched those children grow both in age and in the titles they read, a rare, special experience for a retailer. Her husband Paul is a seasoned captain who pilots one of the island ferryboats. Standing in front of her store, she can watch him walk from the stern steering station, forward to the wheelhouse, as the ferry leaves the harbor. “When he is at the stern station,” Cindy says, “He turns to see if I am in the door so he can wave to me.” In addition to managing shelves stocked with more than 500 titles of varying genres and styles, owner Cindy Lasser has enjoyed the company of several great visiting writers. Walter Cronkite visited and hundreds lined up to meet him and shake his hand. “They all left looking at their hands as if they had touched royalty. And he had those crystal blue eyes that we were unaware

of because off all the black and white televisions.” Swordfish boat captain and writer Linda Greenlaw signed books, as did Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci. Cindy says, “Buddy was just was so much fun, we just laughed and laughed and laughed.” Frank McCourt and Eric Larson, writer of Dead Wake and In the Garden of Beasts also sat with customers before spending the night on the island. Cindy and children’s author Jane O’Connor even donned fancy boas and gave away nail polish in the theme of her beloved Fancy Nancy series. Many small local bookstores have not survived the age of big box retailers and internet goliaths, but Island Bound has and is thriving, partially thanks to some diversification, like its painting classes. Cindy hosts classes throughout the year, often three nights a week, so people can learn from many of the island’s talented artists, including Bill Padien and Cindy Kelly, in a very casual environment. Summer classes are busy and popular; the winter has a different feel. “It’s a big cocktail party in there during the winter painting nights. We’ve never ever had a class where someone didn’t drink the water that was meant for the paintbrushes.” Considering all those good years,

the great writers and painters and a glass dish never empty of Jolly Ranchers, although no one knows why grape is always the last to go, Cindy has decided to sell Island Bound, saying it’s simply time for a change. Looking back

on her many years behind the counter, she first counted the time with her husband. “We have been married for eight years but we have been waving for 12.” Fantastic. www.IslandBoundBookstore.com –Todd Corayer

Ducks for Bucks

it isn’t everyday that you see thousands of rubber ducks cascading down a river. It’s only one day – Saturday, April 30 to be exact – but the sight is hard to forget. Every year 20,000 bright yellow rubber ducks splash down in the Pawcatuck River, freed from their bath time exile for one glorious day out on the (relatively) open seas. The Pawcatuck River Duck Race, now in its 18th year, raises money annually for over 40 local charities. Sponsors put money behind their rubbery racers as they vie for prizes ranging from gift certificates to local businesses

and Block Island ferry tickets to the big enchilada: A trip for four to Disney World or $2,500 in cash. Besides the race itself, the area around the Pawcatuck River will be peppered with games, rides and plenty of food for families working up a hunger after cheering on their duck. For anyone reading this with the words “ecological disaster” ringing in your ears, rest assured; all of the ducks are caught before they can make a break for it into the wild. Native Pride

South County crafters uphold traditions of the past By Bethany Vaccaro X Photography by Brad Smith

“I don’t think there’s a Narragansett out there who doesn’t do something with their hands,” says Allen Hazard, a tall, soft-spoken man in a white Stetson adorned with a lone feather. He is standing in his Charlestown shop The Purple Shell, holding the quahog shell that has played an important role in the history of his people, the Narragansett tribe indigenous to Rhode Island. Allen is one of the most productive wampum artisans today, crafting the distinctive shell jewelry in a small workshop on the side of his shop. Allen began making wampum jewelry for himself when he was a child. He watched his aunt and mother create intricate beaded jewelry and sell it from a small room in his aunt’s house and dreamed of someday having his own shop. Working under his uncle as a tile layer, Allen became familiar with tile cutting tools such as the wet saw. When he realized he could create stunning wampum jewelry using them, his production took off. The doors of The Purple Shell have been open for four years now, featuring not only Allen’s work, but crafts

and artwork by around 20 local artists, many of them members of the Narragansett tribe. “We have an ocean theme here and represent Native American eastern style. Most people are more familiar with the look of Western Natives – buffaloes and the prairie.”

Each corn husk doll created by Dawn Spears is one-of-a-kind

Beadwork jewelry is a way Shana Brown connects to her Narragansett heritage

Although Allen uses modern tools to craft jewelry, he remains true to the intent of his ancestors’ reverence for the quahog. “A huge misconception today is that wampum was Indian money,” he explains. “This could not be farther from the truth.” The True Meaning of Wampum When the Narragansett people searched the shores of the Bay looking for quahogs, they were not looking for riches but for food. “Central to our belief system is that everything in nature is sacred. We saw the quahog as giving its life for us to be able to live,” says Allen. The best way to honor that sacrifice was to use and treasure every aspect of the clam. Since the shells were so beautiful, the Narragansett could give no greater respect to the clam than to adorn their own bodies with it. When wampum was given from one person to another, it was not to purchase something but to offer their highest form of gratitude and respect. “The person receiving the jewelry understood how much went into its creation,” adds Allen. It was not just the beauty of the jewelry they were seeing, it was the history behind the jewelry, the precision needed to break it into the right size, the hours

spent rubbing its edges along a rock crease to smooth it, and ultimately, the sacrifice of the quahog clam for the life of their people. Upholding Tradition Hazard’s dedication to upholding the tradition of his heritage is infectious. The Purple Shell also features the beadwork jewelry of his two nieces, Danielle Nelle and Shana Brown. Due largely to their uncle’s encouragement, the cousins developed their passion for beadwork as adults and found it to be a path back into the rich traditions of Native culture. “The beadwork really started out as a hobby,” says Shana, “but it has become so much more. You get drawn into it. It’s opened a lot of doors.” Shana makes jewelry by hand stitching, stringing each bead on one at a time, while Danielle works off of a loom. “A few years ago, I found a loom in the attic my mom got me when I was little,” she says. “It still had some beadwork on it!” As she began to play around with it again, Danielle realized how much she enjoyed working with beads. Today, she and Shana work separately but often collaborate, making matching pieces to sell together as sets. “We like to work April 2016 | SO RHODE ISLAND

off of each other. I do mostly earrings,” says Shana, “and Danielle will do a bracelet or necklace to match.” Often, they are asked to create jewelry with symbolic colors or symbols, such as the turtle that represents the Narragansett tribe. For Danielle and Shana, making beadwork has become a way to connect with their heritage. “Growing up, I knew I was Narragansett, but it wasn’t something I thought a lot about,” says Shana. With the encouragement of their family, jewelry making put them in touch with their tribe as people began to seek out their work. “A few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought of myself as a Native American crafter,” says Shana, laughing. “Now we’re vending at pow wows and shows.” Danielle agrees, “It’s amazing to be part of something that’s been around for so long. And even our little part means something in the big picture.” The Purple Shell also features the work of Dawn Spears, another member of the Narragansett tribe. She has been making art for as long as she can remember, from weaving as a little girl to the sculpture, textile art and painting she does now. Her canvases depict abstract forms inspired by the colors of the sunrise and sunset and Native symbols. There are patterns found on Native baskets and animal tracks that wander through the shapes. Although she creates many different forms of art, she always returns to doll making. It was her mother who first showed her how to twist dried cornhusks into human forms like their ancestors before them. “Corn husk dolls are found across all tribes,” she explains. “We’re all people who use corn.” Similar to the use of the

quahog shell after eating the clam, Native people did not let anything go to waste. “You’ll see me in the grocery store next to the fresh corn stand digging through the husks,” Dawn laughs. “It’s a perfect example of Native culture. We don’t waste. We’re the original recyclers.” When she begins a doll, she often doesn’t know what it will look like, what clothes she will create for it to wear, and what scene it might depict. Some of her dolls display traditional clothing and tools and some take a more contemporary twist. “When you make the dolls, you put a lot of energy into it, so it’s like part of you,” she says. “Some are really hard to let go of. Some have to be given to someone rather than sold.” Dawn is also committed to sharing the art forms of her people with others. She has two apprentices in doll making and stresses their educational value. “We’re working on doing a series of dolls to put in shadowboxes depicting scenes from Native life.” In 2014, Dawn founded the Northeast Native Arts Alliance (NNAA) to better meet the needs of Native artists in the region. In partnership with the Indigenous Fine Art Market and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, the NNAA will be hosting an art show May 21-22 at the Pequot Museum in Connecticut. It will kick off with an opening festival on May 20, followed by a juried fine art show. There will be music, live painting, and a chance for indigenous artists to display their work. For Dawn, “The partnering of all these organizations together will make for an amazing time.” The Purple Shell. 5219 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 315-2213.

So Stylish

To the Lighthouse As eleventh generation residents of Block Island, the Luciers knew exactly what they wanted when they rebuilt a home by the island’s iconic North Light. Turn the page to read about their dream island getaway.

So Stylish Life/Style |

By Andrea McHugh

The Luciers’ Block Island home capitalizes on water views

Lovers of the Light When Block Island’s own Josh Redd of North Atlantic Builders was called to build a new home from the bottom up on the island’s North End, he knew exactly upon which plot of land the house would stand. “It was right up by the North Light,” he explains. The Block Island North Light House (also called the Block Island Lighthouse) is one of the most iconic attractions on the island (though not to be confused with the popular Block Island Southeast Light perched atop Mohegan Bluffs). The original lighthouse on the land was erected in 1829, but the lighthouse standing there today is the fourth rendition, built in 1867. It includes the keeper’s house, constructed entirely of granite, and the striking lighthouse tower attached to the roof. The original illumination was provided by a fourth order Fresnel lens 42

SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2016

but the lighthouse became automated in 1955 without disturbing the architectural integrity of the keeper’s structure. The light was deactivated for the first time by the Coast Guard in 1973 and the tower was replaced with an unsightly skeleton version. After years of neglect, the lighthouse was sold to the town of New Shoreham and the North Light Commission raised funds to beautifully restore the lighthouse complete with a reinstalle fourth order Frensel lens and a new museum on the first floor. With the restoration complete, it’s no wonder homeowners Lynn and Rob Lucier turned to Redd to craft a home that capitalized on the coveted lighthouse and water views, making the vista the focal point throughout the construction plans. What makes this project especially unique, Redd says, is that the Luciers,

nearly empty nesters at the time of the groundbreaking, had bought the home from family 18 years ago shortly after they married and before becoming parents to four children. “Because they had some time to think about it, they knew what they wanted including in terms of placement,” he says. The Luciers knew exactly how the home would function best for their needs during the time they would spend there through the year, but all the while taking into consideration what would attract vacationing renters to the property during the peak tourist season. “We knew we didn’t want a mainland home – nothing stuffy,” insists Lynn. “Just open and airy, and easy to get to the beach.” But before construction was underway, thoughtful family members who live on Block Island full time and

who work closely with the Block Island Historical Society recommended some careful modifications to the original design to keep in line with more traditional island style. The Luciers breezily agreed to the modifications as seamlessly blending into the architectural landscape of this treasured island was a priority for the couple. For Lynn especially, who summered at her parents’ nearby Cape her whole life, echoing the subtle look of island homes was critical as she identifies with the very fabric of New Shoreham. “My family goes back to the settlers of the island, I’m 11th generation or something,” she says. The result of those efforts, along with Josh Redd’s experienced hand, is a harmonious celebration of contemporary conveniences within a charming cedar-shingle home that fits seamlessly among century-old

buildings and new builds. Part of that Block Island traditional style Redd crafted was building a pair of steep dormers on the second floor, both with a large window capturing the serene views. “The homeowners really liked the change and it looks pretty sweet,” he concedes. Inside, the home takes a cue from its coastal surroundings with light airy hues, crisp whites and natural textures throughout. Though the kitchen is spacious, its simple charm lends a cozy vibe. Stainless steel appliances, a mix of open and closed shelving, wainscoting and marble style countertops offer a warm feel. “We kept it to more natural colors,”

says Lynn. “We enjoy, and we want visitors to enjoy looking at the sky and pond, and not have that view compete with something like a bold wall.” In the kitchen and some of the bathrooms, polished concrete countertops include flecks of authentic Block Island sea glass. “They’re beach stones I collected forever,” says Lynn. Four bedrooms on the second floor provide enviable 180-degree water views, a bedroom on the main floor is remarkably convenient, especially with large families and grandparents, and an out-of-the-ordinary 4.5 bathrooms were clearly built with maximum capacity and convenience for

renters in mind. Outside, a wraparound porch is the epitome of relaxing, inviting guests to put all the tech toys aside and take in the salty air, as do the Adirondack chairs peppered across the lawn. There’s also a coveted outdoor shower – always a summertime favorite. The views are always jaw-dropping but perhaps none more so than at sunrise and sunset. Nearby is the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, offering 134 peaceful acres and opportunities to enjoy fishing, wildlife viewing, environmental education and for both professional and amateur shutterbugs, photography. Not too far away is the

secluded Coast Guard Beach, a welcome respite from some of the other busier beaches on this island, which boasts 17 miles of unspoiled shoreline. Mansion Beach isn’t too far either and offers one of the best spots to catch a great wave. As the Luciers and lucky vacationers get to experience this gem in the years to come, like the lighthouse in its sights, the future looks bright.

I love looking at all the different styles that the press focuses on: street style, boho-chic, LA vs NYC, etc. The truth is, we have a bit of each of these style vibes in our store. It just depends on what accessory you pair with an item and you can quickly change your office attire to boho-chic. The women I meet are looking for items they can wear for various occasions. Items that have versatility and “do more” but are unique. To cater to that woman, we have curated designs that possess a modern twist. You will find key pieces and interchangeable items that are truly versatile. Fashion that goes from day to evening, weekday to weekend, season to season. Does your closet look just like your store? My style blends classic with fashion forward. I like to pair classic items with the silhouette and/or color of the season. I often find myself pairing a classic black turtleneck with pants or a skirt that represents the trend of the season.

I also love jeans, which are a staple in my closet. I have so many pairs and I wear them all. Skinny ankle length jeans are on trend now, but we are seeing flares coming back for spring and very strong for fall of 2016. It is so easy to dress up a pair of jeans with heels, a great top and jewelry and I am ready for anything. I love that your clothing is “mindfully made.” Everything has a good story. My favorite story is from Indigenous Clothing. Not only are these designs ethically made, they are on-trend! The line includes the silhouettes we are all looking for, like ponchos, ombre maxi dresses and wrap dresses. The founders have helped form a scalable artisan network that reflects a commitment to sustainability, social entrepreneurship and responsible actions by consumers and businesses alike. What items are you currently coveting? This time of year, I want to ditch my sweaters and turtlenecks and start wearing lighter fabrics and colors. We have added two designers to the store this spring, Mickey & Jenny and Lola & Sophie. Both design and produce their

products in the US, one in LA and the other in NYC. I am loving the flowy tops from Lola & Sophie, and the soft Earth Tones of Mickey & Jenny. The shapes are modern and unique and take influence from their regions. In April, we can finally break out of the heavy fabrics we’ve been wearing all winter. How do you like to freshen up your wardrobe in the spring without buying everything new? Accessories are a great way to brighten any wardrobe. Change your handbag from black to the color of the season – this spring is rose and ice blue. Adding a new shape to your wardrobe like wide leg black pants or flare jeans immediately freshens any look. I also start to think about what shoes I can wear. I love my riding boots, but as spring arrives I start to introduce lighter colored booties and open toed pumps. Add a trench coat in the latest spring color and you are ready for the start of the season.

SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2016

I don’t know about you, but I love my morning routine. I wake up to a quiet house, take a hot shower, brew a fresh cup of coffee and put caffeine all over my face. What? The health benefits of caffeine – not to mention the health benefits to my coworkers when I have enough coffee in the morning, or more accurately, the health risks when I don’t have enough coffee – are numerous. Caffeine boosts memory, lowers risk of cancer, detoxes the organs, can help soothe asthma. But that’s only when you drink it. When used on the skin, the supercharged antioxidants in green coffee beans fight aging, reduce wrinkles and cellulite, provide deep hydration and create an overall glow. Stephanie Additon, founder of JAVA Skin Care, had long been a fan of green coffee in skincare – but not of the prices of the exclusive skincare lines that utilized it, like La Mer, which sells for hundreds of dollars per ounce. She launched her own line of high quality, natural body products in 2013, including a body serum, coffee bean and sugar scrub, lip scrub, body wash and coffee-infused bar soap. I tried the body wash three years ago, and there has been a bottle in my shower since. I love the caffeinated wakeup first thing in the morning, especially on mornings when I need an extra boost. The body serum, an oil-based moisturizer, is a lifesaver against dry winter skin.

JAVA Skin Care 14 Main Street, Wickford 866-609-3258 www.JAVASkinCare.com

The products are so well-received that they’ve gotten national press from Cosmopolitan and Health, and even ended up in the Grammys swag bags. Fans of JAVA had been clamoring for a face collection, which is formally launching this spring. I was lucky enough to get my hands on samples of the Illuminating Eye Serum and the Face and Décolletage Serum, and I love them as much as I hoped I would. The oil-based moisturizers are lightweight enough to use on normal skin, with or without makeup. The glow I get from that caffeine boost is noticeable, and the two have become a regular part of my morning beauty routine. When the product is fully available, it’s going to be really popular. Perfect timing, then, that Stephanie and crew have just opened their first storefront in Wickford Village. “I fell in love with Wickford when I first moved here as an engaged couple with my now husband Mark,” Stephanie says. “Wickford is such an amazing town filled with history and great people. When JAVA started growing faster then we expected, I knew this was where I wanted to be.” The space also houses art by Silver Hippopotamus, and will host the launch of a men’s JAVA line later this year. “I feel so lucky every day that I get to go to work with my amazing team in our amazing showroom,” Stephanie says. “I’m thrilled with how people have embraced JAVA and our message.”

Grilled Flat Iron Steak from Saltwater Tavern

Neighborhood Comfort One of the perks of living in a state bursting with delicious restaurants is the opportunity to have a great meal any time of day. It’s even better when one eatery can satisfy cravings any time. Saltwater Tavern has everything from a bottomless mimosa brunch to savory dinner offerings. Turn the page to whet your appetite.

including some tables to rest a drink on if you’re not eating. The wooden floors were refinished and look fantastic, as does the pressed tin ceiling and the exposed brick walls. Even the light fixtures were cool: designed to look like gas lamps with beer bottles serving as the globes. The wooden booths and high top tables are spread out nicely, so you feel like you have some privacy. As any good tavern worthy of its name would have, the Saltwater Tavern has an incredible draft beer list. The list is so long, it comes in the form of a booklet. There were plenty of local beers to be had, including beers from Grey Sail Brewing, Whalers Brewing and Revival Brewing. For brunch, there is a separate cocktail list, and the beer-based cocktails intrigued me. The Pamplette included pilsner, lemon juice, elderflower and a squeeze of grapefruit juice. The Brewmosa blended together Belgian wheat beer with freshly squeezed orange juice. As interesting as these drinks sounded, when I saw they had

a Bottomless Mimosa Bar ($16.50), it wasn’t too difficult to choose. Bottomless is a bit of a misnomer, however, since they did limit you to five

mimosas. I was only able to drink four, so it wasn’t a dealbreaker for me. To mix with your sparkling wine, you can choose from classic orange, blood orange, pineapple, cranberry, grapefruit, mango, lemon, strawberry or pomegranate juice. When possible, the juices are freshly squeezed. Blood orange was my favorite, but I also enjoyed grapefruit and pineapple. My friend who joined me on this brunch adventure stayed with blood orange the whole time because she liked it so much. As much as I enjoy going out for brunch, I have to confess I am very picky about brunch food. Eggs benedict is one dish that if it’s not done right, it’s not worth the calories. Seeing one of my favorite breakfast foods (Chiaquiles) on the menu in the form of a benedict, I threw all caution to the wind and ordered it ($12.95). First and foremost, I was not disappointed in this dish. It was a huge portion and more than I could finish in one sitting. The benedict was layered like a casserole. The bottom layer was like a cheese quesadilla and consisted of flour tortillas stuffed with a Mexican blend of cheese. The middle section was a mix of mildly spicy ranchero sauce and black beans. On the top, there was some nicely cooked pulled

There are many reasons why we look forward to the weekend. For the Monday-Friday crowd, the weekend provides a time to recharge our batteries, catch up on errands and visit with family and friends. Those are all good parts of the weekend, but for me, I also look forward to Sunday brunch. Sometimes I will cook it myself and other times I enjoy getting out and exploring the great brunches of Rhode Island. I’m always looking for a new place to brunch, and when I read that Wakefield’s new pub, the Saltwater Tavern, was serving brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, I knew I had to stop in for a visit. As with most things in Rhode Island, the location of the Saltwater Tavern can best be described by saying what it used to be, and it used to be the popular Italian Village restaurant. The space has been completely renovated from top to bottom. I was really impressed when I walked into the restaurant. The centerpiece of the downstairs is a huge bar with plenty of space for everyone, even

pork and two poached eggs, which were topped with pico de gallo and roasted jalapeño hollandaise sauce. Everything was high quality, and the flavors all worked together nicely. My friend was also feeling like a benedict and ordered the Sweet Potato Hash Benedict ($10.95). The base was freshly made cornbread, and my friend commented several times how she could tell it was homemade. The hash was made with roasted sweet potatoes, chipotle, lime and onions. My friend was worried it might be too spicy but said it was more flavorful than spicy. Two poached eggs sat on top of the hash and were accompanied by more of the delicious roasted jalapeño hollandaise sauce. Both of our meals came with home fries, and although we are both picky about home fries, we thought these were well done and tasted freshly made.

The upstairs level of the Saltwater Tavern is currently used as a more formal dining area in the evenings, and our waitress touted it as a “date place.” For now, the menu upstairs is the same as downstairs, and the dinner menu offers a nice variety of items. There’s a large appetizer and Mexican food selection, and the entrées are reasonably priced and include local seafood such as Cioppino ($24.95) and Fish and Chips ($12.95). I will definitely be making some return visits to the Saltwater Tavern this summer. Its convenient location in Wakefield makes it a perfect stop on my way to East Matunuck Beach. I will be ready to sample some of their draft beers, and the Red Velvet Lava Cake ($6.95) is on my “must try” list for the summer.

In Good Spirit Bartenders, like certain beverages, get better with age... especially at The Iron Works Tavern The bar downstairs at the Iron Works Tavern is gorgeous. Built around black lally columns – like a tree eating a fence – it warmly embraces its industrial history. Once a jewel in the crown of industrialist Thomas Jefferson Hill, the RI Malleable name is now preserved in the recycled brickwork of the Iron Works Tavern and the adjoining Hilton Garden Inn. Fitting then, that since the Tavern opened, behind the bar is Kenny Guercia, a self-described “former maniac,” who after four decades of bartending all over the state, doesn’t seem to have a jaded bone in his body. I spoke to Kenny, and like any great bartender, that was really easy to do.

Photography by Soozie Sundlun/East Greenwich Photo

Your boss described you as a local legend. My boss likely has many descriptions of me, and none of them legend, so you’ll have to let me know how that feels. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Let’s see, I started when I was probably 17. I’m 60 years old this July. I know I don’t look it. So, that’s over four decades of bartending, what are some trends you’ve seen come and go? Well, like the old-fashioned for instance, that was a big thing and now it’s starting to come back. I make a great oldfashioned. Martinis, years ago, we used to use vermouth; today they’d rather have the olive juice than the vermouth. We tend to see women sniffing beer more than they used to. There are so many beer snobs now. I’m amazed. A fancy dressed lady will come in, and say “I’ll have an Allagash.” What’s special about The Iron Works Tavern? It’s a great place. It’s probably one of the coolest places around just because of the history behind it. Joe Piscopio had bought the place years ago and said, “someday there’s going to be a railroad station across

Kenny Guercia of The Iron Works Tavern has a cult following for his cocktails

the street, and the airport is going to get bigger,” and it all happened. [Joe Piscopio] had knocked this building down, took all the brick and refurbished it. It took them two years, two guys just cleaning the bricks, putting it in stacks. It was completely reconstructed with the original flooring and a lot of original stuff from the original building. What’s this about a Kenny G Coffee? I have a coffee I made years ago for a restaurant in Narragansett that I had thought up; we called it the Kenny G coffee. When people are on vacation they ask the bartender to make it [and] they call me up. I got a call from Florida last week: “How do you make a Kenny G coffee?” I said, “who is this,” he said “this is the Key Grill in Jupiter, Florida.” It’s got a dash of Tia Maria, a

The Iron Works Tavern 697 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick 739-5111 www.TheIronWorksTavern.com

dash of Grand Marnier, a dash of Baileys and a dash of Captain Morgan. All of that mixed up with hot coffee and whipped cream. Any memorable guests? Guy sits down. He has a Dewar’s on the Rocks. I thought, this guy looks familiar. I said “What are you doing in town?” He says, “I just got into town, buying a Corvette in Massachusetts, going to go test drive it and come back.” So we’re talking, and he was real nice; I said, “I know you,” he said, “probably.” It was Mel Gibson. I got home and told my mother and my wife. She says, “why the hell didn’t you call me up?” I understand you’ve developed something of a following over the years? I have bar groupies. Every Friday night I have the same guys that were at Richards in 1976 that always come. I’m just a nice guy I guess (laughs). I love people. People are so interesting. I went to Johnson & Wales, took up psychology… now here I am in the bar business. I guess it just stuck with me all my life. I have a great wife, a home. I did good. April 2016 | SO RHODE ISLAND

What you might not know is that the restaurant can take your culinary education one step further with its wine tasting series. The first of this year’s events, The Wines of Grgich Hills, happened last month, pairing six of the California vineyard’s vintages with delicious spring dishes by Executive Chef Thomas Duffy. This month brings another seasonal tasting event: Get Ready for Summer With Rose on April 17, highlighting the nuances of different bottles in the Rose renaissance, and pairing them with seasonal foods. Think Green It’s a springtime pleasure to start getting farm fresh greens. But did you know that there’s a local greenhouse that produces greens year round, and they’ll deliver it to your doorstep? Baby Greens in Saunderstown keeps things green all year round. With the goal of producing “sustainable, local, non-toxic produce year round with free home delivery,” owner and grower Jeffery Kamminga does just that. His deliverable greens are a mix of mild and hot mustard greens, lettuces, arugula and more. His greens mixes change with the season, and he also can deliver many other food items from local purveyors. Going green never tasted so good. 440-9088, www. BabyGreensRI.com

casions. In fact, it’s even more accessible, and delicious, than ever. With all the talk of non-olive ingredients in certain imported olive oils, it’s nice to know that there are places close to home that can introduce you to 100% olive oils that run the gamut from extra virgin to Italian herbs natural flavor infused organic olive oil. If you think that’s a mouthful, you’re right… a mouthful of flavor. “What I do for folks who don’t know a lot is to have them sample milder olive oils to get used to the flavor profiles,” explains co-owner Suzanne. “Then we’ll move up to the more robust flavors with layered profiles. Owners Suzanne and Joe Hall also offer infused balsamic vinegars, hot sauces, specialty foods and gifts for that foodie friend who’s already stopped by the newest restaurant in town. I’m sure they’d appreciate some Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar to accompany their soft cheeses, fruit, pastries, dessert, game meats and yogurt. Perhaps some Blood Orange brownie mix will spice up their dinner party. Then again, gifting some Florida Sea Salt Scrub in key lime sounds like a great way to exfoliate. The best part is if you’re unsure of how to use these oils, vinegars or sauces, Suzanne and Joe are on hand to help you out. “Our shop is set up as a tasting room, so you can taste everything before buying,” Suzanne says. Maharaja Indian Restaurant For a taste of authentic Indian food in South County, visit Maharaja Indian Restaurant. Located in Aqua Blue in Narragansett, directly across from the sea wall, Maharaja is one of a very few restaurants serving Indian cuisine in the southern part of the state. For newcomers to Indian cuisine, there are a few basics you shouldn’t miss. Naan, similar to pita bread, comes in flavors like garlic and cilantro, and ginger and honey, or stuffed with paneer (like a mild feta cheese), chicken or lamb. It’s baked in a clay oven, and essential to any Indian meal. Start with some appetizers – don’t miss the samosas (deep fried turnovers stuffed with potatoes and peas, with vegetables, chicken or lamb) or pakoras (fritters with paneer cheese, vegetables or

chicken). For your entree, try a Biryani, which is a one dish, rice-based meal that consists of layering rice and meat (pick vegetables, lamb, chicken, shrimp, goat or a combination) in a casserole and then baking it in the oven. Maharaja has an extensive selection of tandoor choices, which can be appetizers for two, or entrees for one. The Kadhai Chicken is cubed chicken tikka cooked with peppers, tomatoes, onions and mushrooms in a traditional Indian pan, and is served sprinkled with freshly ground spices and herbs. Dal Makhni is black lentils cooked with fresh herbs and spices, sauteed in butter and garnished with fresh coriander. Or, choose from lamb, chicken, vegetables and fish curry, korma, saag or vindaloo, depending on your spice preference.

Insider Tip: For those who know and love Indian cuisine, you’ll be surprised at how extensive Maharaja’s menu is, and how many selections you’ll find on the menu, which is regionally based in Northern India, that you won’t find many other places.

So Approved Just Like Grandma Made Whether served alone, on pasta or in a sub, meatballs hold a special place in everyone’s heart. We didn’t have to look far for local versions to fill our bellies. Our one piece of advice: try them for yourself. –Grace Lentini

Gluten-Free Feast

Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana does everything the authentically Italian way, and their meatballs are no exception. The three rich meatballs were perfectly cooked, then topped with house-made San Marzano tomato sauce and seasoned ricotta, then topped with fresh basil. Cosi delizioso. South County Commons, South Kingstown. 783-2900, www. PasqualesPizzeriaRI.com

It’s not often gluten-free and meatball go in the same sentence. The chefs over at Bravo Wood Fired Pizza have aimed to achieve that. With success, the meatballs are held together with eggplant, which makes the flavor of the meat really shine through. It was a nice surprise to find fresh herbs in the meatballs, as well as a wonderfully garlicky red sauce to accompany it. 6689 Post Road, North Kingstown. 398-2500, www.BravoWoodFiredPizza.com

Big and Bold

Simplicity Refined

These little balls of savory deliciousness from Chianti’s were full of beef and pork, pan-fried, topped with a simply perfect tomato sauce, ricotta and fresh basil. There are some classics you don’t just mess with. 195 Old Forge Road, East Greenwich. 885-4999, www.ChiantisRI.com

The meatball is a classic at Trattoria Longo, and for good reason. These savory treats reminded us of what it what like to sit around grandma’s table. Topped with a good-to-the-last-drop tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese, childhood was on our tastebuds. 12 Canal Street, Westerly. 315-2952, www.CafeLongo.comw
