AMAZING DIABETES STUDY Encouraging Study on TYPE II DIABETES Shows the disease CAN BEGIN TO BE REVERSED in as little as 1 WEEK!
Spring is in the Air Stop and take a deep breath: that’s right, spring is in the air. That means two things. One, you can finally put away your winter coat for the season. And two, that it’s time to give your house a good solid dose of spring cleaning. That can come in many forms, from a top-to-bottom scrubbing (not so fun) to creating a refreshed and renewed look (much more enjoyable). But before you go out shopping, check out our cover story, where we go inside the homes of South County residents who have living spaces with some interesting stories behind them. This month, we also go one-on-one with South County’s new superstar, Billy Gilman, and talk to some bands with slightly different musical aspirations. Happy spring, everyone.
A free guide has just been made available to Type II Diabetics detailing an approach that appears to be more powerful than any drug known to modern science. The free diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin injections, lose weight
without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore pancreatic function, and even become non-diabetic. The free guide also reveals rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond weight gain, genetics and lack of exercise.

PRESERVING AN ICON In southern Rhode Island, few things are as iconic as The Narragansett Towers. Arching over Ocean Road, they’ve been the symbolic gateway to warmer days and the lazy afternoons on the beach that come with them since 1885. Thanks to a recent grant from The Champlin Foundation, The Towers will be getting the love they need to stand strong for years to come. The foundation has granted $125,000 to go towards exterior renovations to the historic building, which are
currently in their final phase and are expected to wrap up by the end of the summer. Repairs include fixing exterior stone masonry and repainting all of the building’s wood trim, as well as replacing damaged stones and repointing mortar joints. All of this means that The Towers will be around for a while, creating new oceanside memories for new generations and offering live entertainment all year round. Not to mention serving as the perfect backdrop for those enviable beach day selfies. TheTowersRI.com

The Arctic Playhouse’s Big Second Act In the ‘50s and ‘60s,
West Warwick was an entertainment hotspot filled with dancing, theatre and dining. The Arctic Playhouse, a non-profit theatre, hopes to bring that former glory back to the city. In early January, Arctic Playhouse founders Jim Belanger, Lloyd Felix and David Vieira and board members Caroline Delaney and Bryan Sawyer received $300,000 from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts (RISCA) for a new and improved theatre. The new facility, just a few doors down from the current
Playhouse, was originally bought last year with a $175,000 donation from neighboring business Centreville Bank. David says the owners, who formed the Playhouse in 2014, are looking to create a 200-seat theater, a cabaret in the renovated lobby and a multipurpose space for community members to hold events. David and Jim both have ties to the area and decided they wanted to be part of the revitalization of West Warwick by creating a space that the community can use and where it can see affordable theatre.
The new Arctic Playhouse will recall West Warwick’s past as a hotspot for theatre and entertainment
The owners plan to maintain the character of the 19th-century building, once home to Maxine’s Clothing Shop in the ‘50s, while also giving it a new twist. David admits he loves the new location “because it has such great history and character,” but that it also requires major construction and upgrades. The $300,000 will mostly go towards finishing deconstruction and laying the building’s foundation. The grant will allow
the owners to move a main staircase and put in necessary upgrades for electricity, heating and air conditioning. The Playhouse will continue to fundraise to achieve the full $1.7 million needed to make this new community spot a reality. In the meantime, the show must – and will – go on at their current theatre. 117 Washington Street, West Warwick. TheArcticPlayhouse. com -Marla Gagne
GO FISH
For many anglers,
the second Saturday in April is spring’s greatest day. This year, the opening of trout fishing season is April 8 and the day is about more than just fishing. It celebrates the arrival of spring, afternoons in boats, kids with new rods and fish on the grill. For the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, it means months of preparation, feeding and delivering tens of thousands of trout to streams, ponds and lakes statewide. RIDEM raises rainbow, brown and brook trout in North Kingstown, Perryville, Carolina and Arcadia. In addition to stockings throughout the year, approximately 80,000 will be delivered for opening day to a hundred waterways. At North Kingstown’s Lafayette Trout Hatchery, RIDEM biologist and District Resource Manager Ken

Fernstrom carefully tracks the growth of some 200,000 rainbows, 48,000 brookies and 50,000 of browns. Ken has raised fish for more than 18 years and oversees the 1918 hatchery, which sits ideally between the Narrow River and Queens River watersheds where clean ground water flows at a near-perfect 51 degrees farenheit. Rainbows are natives of hard Pacific Northwest waters, so DEM staff work diligently to balance pH levels for healthy fish. Browns are German transplants, prized for their gorgeous patterns and haloed dark spots. Brookies are our native species; they thrive in cold clean waters like the Upper Wood River and some select streams. Spawned last October, this year’s class of trout were barely an inch but each week their size doubles. At four inches, they’re moved to outside cement

So Happening So & So SO BLOCK ISLAND
The Quiet Islander
Like a character out of a classic Western, islander Gene Hall says little, preferring to let his work speak for itself
Photography by Tracy Finn
Gene Hall doesn’t say
much and that’s fine. The youngest of seven islanders, he doesn’t want attention, like the kind you get in magazines. He’s a true independent, a guy who works hard for what he has, doesn’t quit for the sweat, stopping only to fix what’s broken. He’d have been one of Hoover’s “Rugged Individualists,” a nod to self-reliance, a desire for less government and in Gene’s case, a common sense value to be your own man. “When we were kids, I would walk to school with him, I’d be trying to catch frogs and turtles, he’d be reading a book the entire time, some Western,” said islander Russell Littlefield. The island was a different place when Gene was young. Kids had loads of freedom, like hunting pheasants on the way home from school after propping up shotguns in the principal’s office. Gene started working young, learning how to excavate land and operate heavy equipment, always working with his strong hands. “His stone wall work, pure artistry” said island realtor Gail Ballard Hall. In 1988, Gene started Hall’s On-Shore Brush Cutting to clear tracts and hillsides of thorny brush and mow fields, pastures and Greenway paths, always carefully maintaining their walls. For dividing property and retaining livestock, the island is threaded with dry stacked stone walls built centuries ago. Some stretches protect undiscovered Native American middens of scallop and clam shells, others are washed with green moss chest high, tilting in submission to the force of erosion. Over time, many sections collapsed to lie in heaps, surrendered to
a living earth. With the strength of three men, Gene has carefully restored and maintained hundreds of miles of wall, lifting dead-weight rocks, securing them on perches with balance and gravity. Gene Hall’s walls are most certainly works of art. In his shop, perched high above The Great Salt Pond, work on his machines is endless, suspended only very briefly for visitors seeking help or perhaps longer for those offering a cold beverage. He has a passion for firearms benefited by an extensive knowledge of the mechanics and history of pistols and long guns. An avid fan of shooting sports, he practices and occasionally competes at the Peace Dale Shooting Preserve or north at Addieveille East Farm and when there’s time, he travels to Hell’s Canyon with a group of close friends to hunt chukars and fish for small mouth bass and sturgeon. But there’s not always time. A ballooning island population means more newcomers calling for his services and phones never have been Gene’s specialty. Conversations are brief; you don’t ask a question if you don’t want to hear the answer. Gene Hall shares some resemblance to actor Clint Eastwood, with both sharing a quiet demeanor, efficiency of words and rugged good looks. His admirable work ethic is a classic Western itself; there’s always something to be done, grass to mow, fences to mend. In an Eastwood classic, Eli Wallach gives advice over the smoke of a pistol, “When you have to shoot, shoot... don’t talk.” That’s Gene Hall. –Todd Corayer April 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Legends of Rock in Rhode Island
This year’s Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame inductees include local jazz, R&B and rock icons
Local musicians and music lovers alike shared memories with one another at the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in Pawtucket when ten local artists and bands were introduced as the 2017 inductees. These included jazz and R&B acts Artie Cabral, Dan Moretti, Billy Osborne and Frank Potenza, and rock artists Phil Greene, Neutral Nation, Plan 9, Rizzz,
Throwing Muses and The Wild Turkey Band/Hometown Rockers. This year’s induction ceremonies and concerts will take place over the course of three days, with the jazz and R&B inductions happening on April 23 at The Greenwich Odeum and the two rock induction ceremonies and concerts on April 29 and April 30 at The Met. April 30 will also
be the unveiling of the inductee exhibits at the Hall of Fame museum at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, which including the 2017 inductees, now has 58 exhibits. Rick Bellaire, vice chair of Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame says that he is overjoyed by the “sense of community that musicians around here have,” adding that every year,
the board has to make a difficult decision in regards to choosing the inductees, but one day, they’ll get to everyone. “For five years, we’ve sold out every event,” he says. “This year the spread of styles is so big and the acts are so popular that I think we’re going to sell out three events.” RhodeIslandMusicHallOf Fame.com –Olivia Perreault

With more than two
decades’ experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry, Dave Turchetta has a good eye for opportunities. So, when he took a closer look at the longtime TLC Coffee Roasters, a cafe conveniently bookended between the Kingston Train Station and the University of Rhode Island, he decided it was the perfect place to indulge his passion for friendly service, gourmet coffee and espresso drinks, and savory bites. His first order of business since taking the helm in 2015 was to renovate the space inside and out, making it more welcoming and community-oriented while maintaining its small town charm. Next, indulging South County java-addicts and beyond, TLC grew their coffee selection, roasting all their equitably sourced coffee beans from across the globe on site every day to guarantee the freshest brew. “secret sauce” may just be Ken, the cafe’s roaster in chief, who developed a variegated roasting process that accentuates both the lighter and heavier notes of each bean. The positive response was palpable and customers wanted to have TLC at their fingertips. In addition to the selection of blends and single origin coffee beans available to go by the pound, Dave developed a way TLC fanatics could have their coffee the most convenient way possible: K-Cups. “We are the only roaster in Rhode Island making our own custom K-Cups with our coffee onsite,” says Dave, who invested in a specialized machine that can prep, pack and process K-Cup orders. “We usually have a medium and dark roast available anytime and then we do custom K-Cups from any of our beans,” he explains. THEY GOT YOU
Meet the tribute bands bringing your favorite tunes, from Elvis to Weezer, to local stages By Amanda M. Grosvenor
A
lthough you’ve probably heard some of their names or even seen them play, you may not know that South County regularly hosts (and is sometimes home to) a wide array of cover bands recreating hits across diverse genres. Some acts cover only one band, while others pick songs written by a variety of musicians; some dress the part, while others are more low key. No matter what type of music you like most, one of these acts is bound to have you covered. Robert Black of Robert Black and the Elvis Express Band is billed as New England’s premier Elvis impersonator and has been paying tribute to the King since 2012, either using backing tracks or a full band. “Elvis is the greatest of all time, appeals to every age group and is also the most requested tribute show worldwide – so there’s never a lack of work,” he says. He has competed nationally in Elvis tribute competitions, but finds that “playing shows at major venues throughout New England and nationwide is just the best gig there is. We plan on doing these shows as long as we can.” RobertBlackEntertainment.com Guitarist and vocalist Dale DeJoy of the band Hey Nineteen got into Steely Dan early on. “It was the first pop music I’d heard that was so complex, sophisticated and outside the box,” he says. “It got more interesting as they grew musically. I would wear out their albums trying to figure out the solos.” The eleven-member Steely Dan cover group has now been playing since 2013 and completely sold out the first show they ever played at the Greenwich Odeum. “There were 200 people outside trying to get in, some scalping tickets.” Check out the band’s website for upcoming gigs, such as one at Newport Grand on June 17. Hey19Band.com AC/DC’s iconic shrill, brash vocals are not easy to emulate, so when bassist Miguel
Goncalves found someone who could sing like Brian Johnson in 1990, he decided to start Back in Black. It was a false start at first: “My first singer joined a carnival and never made the first rehearsal,” says Miguel, “which was a blessing because [vocalist] Tony Sitler came in and is still here.” Twenty-seven years of success can be attributed to the rocking, high-energy show they put on, electrifying audiences all over New England and beyond. “The money is minimal, the travel is excruciating and a tough life on our families, but we love what we do. Passion is a good word.” BackInBlack.org Another popular, long-running cover band is Badfish, whose members convened to cover the ‘90s reggae/punk/ska band Sublime in 2001 while studying at URI. After Sublime’s lead singer and guitarist Bradley Nowell passed away in 1996, “we knew there were a lot of fans that never got to see them play live, so the idea made sense of us,” says Badfish bassist Joel Hanks. Their favorite show they’ve ever performed? “When Sublime’s original drummer, Bud Gaugh, sat in and played an entire set with us was truly a magical night.” Badfish is in the middle of a big US tour, but will be coming back to Rhode Island with shows at Lupo’s in Providence (April 29) and the Ocean Mist (May 28). Badfish.com Contrary to what its name might imply, The Blue Album doesn’t cover just one Weezer record – although they did start out that way. “Weezer’s Blue Album was pretty important to our collective musical upbringing, and we felt like it would be fun to cover,” says band member Brad Caetano. “We decided to keep playing more than just a one-off show, and figured we might as well learn a few other Weezer albums.” Starting in 2011, the band took a short hiatus, but has been back performing as of a June 2016 show at the Met in Pawtucket. “Being able to

Sugar covers everything from classic ‘70s funk to modern hits by Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars hang with some of our closest friends working on a musical project that is not stressful or draining – which original bands can tend to be – is a nobrainer.” Facebook.com/TheBlueAlbum While many cover acts choose just one band or artist to focus on, some incorporate music from a whole genre or era of rock. Green Tea is a local seven-member jam band that performs original music as well as ‘70s rock classics from The Grateful Dead, The Band, The Allman Brothers and Pink Floyd, to name a few. “It’s what we all grew up with, were into and gravitated to,” says drummer Jay Hartley. “Once you weed out the people who don’t mesh and find a rock solid crew that’s really happy with the style, it works.” Although the band has been playing together since 2001, winning the local live battle of the bands at Mohegan Sun in 2014 marked a big turning point for them. “It was a huge opportunity, a great prize and led to a lot of bigger gigs,” says Jay. “But above all, we’re real musicians at our core who above everything just love to play music. We don’t do it for the money, we do it for the enjoyment.” They’re playing the Wood River Inn in Wyoming this month (April 15), but keep an eye on their website for more upcoming dates in Westerly and Mystic. GreenTeaBand.com Sugar, originally called Sugardaddy, is a highenergy act that never fails to get crowds up and dancing, covering a wide mix of ‘70s disco/funk and ‘80s, ‘90s and modern pop, rock and R&B since 1999: think Michael Jackson, Prince, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. Popular among all ages, the band consists of seven to ten musicians depending on if the horn section is joining them that night. Performing at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC – the home of the Rob Roy cocktail and host to Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor – for the 9/11 Memorial was a nostalgic evening and a special memory for the band. You can catch them this month at the Newport Blues Cafe (April 22) and the Windjammer in Westerly (April 28). SugarBand.net Neal and the Vipers (previously Young Neal

and the Vipers) has made a name playing blues and American roots-based original music for more than 30 years as well as covers of rockabilly, R&B, surf and rock-and-roll tunes. The now four-member band was signed to major labels during their career and produced more than a dozen records, including nine for frontman Neal Vitullo alone. “We pick songs that move us,” he says. “It doesn’t have to be a popular song by any means – currently we’ve been playing ‘Right Place Wrong Time’ by Doc Johnson a lot.” The band jams regularly all over the state, and for them there’s no place like home. “No place is perfect, but Rhode Island is awesome and the people here are wonderful and always support music. I have musician friends from all over the country, and they do not get the support that we do here,” says Neal. Catch them this month at the Tri City Elks in Warwick (April 22) and the Narragansett Cafe in Jamestown (April 29). NealVitullo.com

VOICE
The day before my
interview with Billy Gilman he was busy singing the national anthem at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for the Patriots, who had just won the Super Bowl. He was hanging out with Governor Raimondo and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, and getting his picture taken with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. No big deal. Just a typical Tuesday. What’s great about Billy is even when he’s having a moment as crazy as singing next to Gronk, he’s still just a genuine, kind-hearted guy. He’s hugely talented and he still acts just like a kid who lives in Hope Valley, which is where he’s from. With his recent success on the hit show The Voice, Billy remains down-to-earth and true to his Rhode Island roots. He just happens to be an amazing singer. Billy originally exploded onto the music scene in early 2000. He had a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot Country songs charts. He had a debut album called One Voice, a Grammy nomination, oh, and he was only twelve. Being a kid who loved music in Rhode Island, he says his life wasn’t much different than say, someone growing up in Arkansas. “I was singing since birth,” he says. It was always just the way it was for me.” Billy considers himself to be lucky though, since his family truly supported his desire to be a singer. “They wanted to see me succeed. They weren’t like, you’ve got to be a lawyer or a doctor. They gave me karaoke machines, guitars. My grandmother sent me to my first vocal coach. They did everything to inspire me.” He’s truly a person who loves music and that love has only deepened as he’s gotten older. When asked about his musical influences one name quickly popped into mind. “Pam Tillis, country singer. Love

her. I saw her on a little special on TV when I was like six and I knew I wanted to do that,” he says. “I would listen and learn all her songs, she really inspired me. She had this one song called ‘Cleopatra, Queen of Denial’ and it was so inappropriate for a six year old, but I loved it.” His guilty pleasure song that he will sing to no matter what? “MMMBop” by Hanson. Billy has been singing all of his life, even before he made his entrance into the pop music scene. From
his debut at 12 to his recent time on The Voice he says, “I was singing, doing shows, it was enough to make a living. I was happy but I felt like the music and the fans deserved more. The people who have always supported me, they deserved more.” The love that Billy has for his fans is powerful. “They’re very loyal. They’d tweet me and be retweeting what I was doing. They always stuck by me.” Last year Billy was a part of the blind auditions

for season 11 of The Voice. He sang Adele’s “When We Were Young” and captivated the judges. All four of the judges turned their chairs around, meaning Billy got to choose who would be his coach for the show. With his choice of Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton or Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Billy selected Adam Levine. Fun fact? According to Billy, Adam was completely hands-on during the show. He hung out with Billy outside of recording

sessions and invited him to his concerts. “People come up and say, ‘It looks like you’re friends,’ but he was. All of the judges put forth the energy to be your friend.” It wasn’t Billy who thought of going on The Voice, though. He says: “Actually, it was them, to be truthful. I didn’t think of doing [the show] and they approached me. They contacted my manager and they wanted to know if I was still singing, and of course I was. They scouted me. They asked me to do it for three seasons and I kept saying no. But then I thought of my fans, and I jumped in.” Billy went on to make it all the way to the final two, coming in as runner-up to winner Sundance Head. He also totally loves his home state and everything about it. “I’m a total Rhode Islander,” he says, laughing. “Rhode Island has so much to offer. It’s crazy. We have the beach, we have the city, and not many places have that. I’m so grateful to have grown up in a state that provides so much. Like the Red Sox, they could be in last place, but those seats are sold out. New Englanders, especially Rhode Islanders, they stick by you. I certainly felt it after coming in second in this show. We are a special breed, we’re always there for each other.” His favorite thing to do in RI? “I’m such a foodie. I love Siena [in Providence], I love Richard’s Pub in East Greenwich. Oh, and Main Street Coffee in East Greenwich, too. I love to be in and around the
culture of Rhode Island, and there’s so much great food.” Rhode Island clearly loves him back; there’s a signed picture of him from when he was a kid hanging up in The Wood River Inn in Hope Valley. “I was very, very young, and they haven’t updated it. It’s one of the shots of me when I was like 10 or 11. I actually did a concert there in like 1999. They wanted to have a concert so I did it in the dining room.” Since The Voice ended, life has been crazy for the singer, but Billy is dedicated to what comes next. When asked about his plans he says, “It is all work, work, work! Record label meetings, all kinds of stuff. Movies, concerts – I want to tour the world and, of course, say ‘thank you’ to those that voted for me week after week on The Voice. I want to do movies, clothing, but never lose sight of my true love, which is singing.” He laughs and pauses for a second, the foodie in him coming out, and says: “I’d love to try out a cookbook or a cooking show.” For the foreseeable future, though, Billy is staying in Rhode Island – a mere 20 minutes from where his parents live and where he grew up. He says he’s looking forward to the beach this summer and can’t wait to grab a Del’s. After everything though, you’d think that Rhode Island’s star would be ready to break out and leave his little state behind. Not Billy. “My boyfriend asked me: ‘New York? LA?’ and I said, ‘Nope. Rhode Island.’” April 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

CREATIVITY IN BLOOM
Susan Sward’s art and meditation space helps her create When Susan Sward and her husband Niels bought their Charlestown home nearly two years ago, they appreciated all of the critical spaces: kitchen, living room, bedrooms, etc. But there was one undefined attic/closet/storage/ space that equally excited Susan – not because of what it was, but because of what it could be. “We saw such possibilities!” she says. “I began moving my art supplies in, along with every extra table, chair and shelf unit we had. Our goal was to create a space for me to create art.” Back when the couple lived in North Scituate and their daughters moved out on their own, Susan and Niels had created a small space for Susan’s art. Yes, she appreciated not having to work on the dining room table anymore, but the transformation was much more profound. “The studio was a small space; nothing fancy, but it was always there waiting for me when I got home from teaching all day,” says the full-time art teacher at West Warwick High School. “Each time I walked in, I was reminded that I am an artist. That art is important to my life.” Taking a cue from the original, the couple made the Charlestown studio space simple, describing it as “a bit rag tag.” Furnishings and décor were primarily sourced from local yard sales, estate sales and antique shops like Jules Antiques in Richmond. “What makes it special is the vibe of the room. It’s a secret space within my home. There is a stillness to the room – a very serene and meditative aura.” Susan says that after school, she likes to retreat to the room and be swept into a different existence. It’s a space dedicated to creativity, dreaming and quiet. “I think it’s important for anyone with an interest like painting, sewing, reading, meditation or yoga to create space, even if it’s a small corner. Our homes have spaces for cooking, eating, sleeping and gathering. Why not honor the artistic or spiritual side of our lives as well?”
Artist Susan Sward created a “secret space” in her Charlestown home where she can get lost in her art after a long day
American Idol finalist Erika Van Pelt’s home studio has everything a musician needs to create: her gear, her yoga mat and no distractions
MAKING SWEET MUSIC
Erika Van Pelt finds inspiration in minimalism Long before the nation was charmed by her singing prowess, South County was well aware of the many talents of Erika Van Pelt. Although being a top 10 finalist on season 11 of American Idol shot her to reality TV superstardom, the Rhode Island native had already established a full-service mobile DJ company, VP Entertainment, in between hitting the high notes with successful bands throughout the region. Today, with a thriving solo career, Erika undoubtedly needed a space in her home dedicated to creating and recording music. “The room contains all of the essentials including computers, sound equipment, instruments – and my yoga mat. It’s really all I need,” says Erika. The unfussy approach keeps the singer focused. “This is a practical space for doing administrative work, playing music, working out at home etc., so we try to keep it as uncluttered and functional as possible,” she says. “I think it reflects the duality of being a creative person but also a bit of a minimalist.”
Erika and her partner wanted the space to be cool while simultaneously serving a productive purpose. “I have to be careful about having too many distractions in the room, otherwise I would never get anything done!” she explains. But there is one piece in the room that gives away Erika’s cool, kid-at-heart persona: a Batman mirror. “Most people that know me understand that I’m a pretty serious Batman geek,” she laughs. “While I was on American Idol, I ended up with a collection of about 10 pairs of custom-made Chuck Taylors with art that was Batman themed or inspired. I’ve since donated all of them, but they were a lot of fun!” Erika keeps the simple, sun-drenched space tidy and is mindful of its purpose. “I find that my brain works to its fullest potential when the room is clean and laid out to be a good working space,” she says. “ When you’re in there, it’s business time. We are there to learn, to practice, to better ourselves.”
Lori Joyal’s Quonochontaug home is the coastal getaway she’s always known she wanted, complete with access to oysters fresh out of the water
SEA THE VIEW
Lori Joyal’s salt pond sanctuary is a breath of fresh air Lori Joyal has loved the ocean her whole life. Her parents rented a home in the coastal enclave of Quonochontaug for decades, buying a small cottage there in 1973 and ultimately retiring in the Charlestown community in 1986. Nearly 20 years ago, after Lori and husband Bob welcomed daughter Jacqueline to their family, they knew they wanted to live in Quonochontaug full time. “It was one the best decisions we have ever made,” Lori says. They moved there in the spring of 2012 and worked with local contractor Jamie Aluzzo to make some much-needed adjustments to the home, including her sea-inspired living room – an open space that blends seamlessly with the kitchen and dining rooms. “[He] put up with me and did the basic simple things that we wanted with coastal charm. I’m just the kind of person who wants simple, coastal comfort,” says Lori, a realtor with Lila Delman Real Estate International. “He knew what
I wanted and the rest is history.” Inside, Lori has furnished and decorated with seaside charms from local shops including Simple Pleasures in Charlestown (which furnished the requisite “Quonochontaug” sign) and Miceli’s Furniture in downtown Westerly. Often, the Joyals bring the outside in as well. “Jacqueline can clam and fish and even grab a few oysters anytime. She puts her waders on and out she goes,” says Lori. “I just wish my mom and dad were alive to see where I wound up. I can see my dad jumping up and putting down his martini and saying, ‘I’ll be right back – I am going to grab a few clams!’ We used to ask his friends along the pond if we could clam as kids and now here we are, bang, [just] walk out our door…. there is not a day that goes by that I don’t pinch myself as I drive down the driveway. Life simply doesn’t get better and I am grateful for what I have.” April 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Matunuck Oyster Bar owner Perry Raso’s home reflects a life dedicated to the sea
NAVIGATING LIFE’S SEAS
Perry Raso’s sea captain’s home is a reflection of his past and future Perry Raso might just be the best known aqua-farmer in all of Rhode Island. At the tender age of 12, he started digging littlenecks in Point Judith Pond, wild harvesting all sorts of sea life to turn into savory treats. “The first time I went in Potter Pond, I followed someone who was diving for steamers,” he says. “He stopped his boat, anchored and started reading the newspaper. I apprehensively asked him where a good place to dive for steamers might be, and he directed me to a cove where he dug the day before. That cove is the shore of Captain Potter’s property and I never realized then that I would live there decades later.” Perry’s childhood hobby turned into a career after he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from URI in aquaculture and fisheries technology. In 2002, he spotted the perfect docks on Potter Pond in East Matunuck to serve as the base for his oyster farm dream. The docks happened to be attached to a ramshackle restaurant, but he’d figure that part out later. Matunuck Oyster Farm would come to occupy a seven-acre commercial aquaculture lease, and Perry’s Matunuck Oyster Bar opened in 2009, but don’t let his leadership position fool you – he is still on the water almost daily. After hours and hours of tending to oyster cages as well as his newer addition of farm-raised bay scallops, Perry is ready to relax in his old captain’s home – a place seemingly perfect for this sustainable shellfish advocate. The living room is his sanctuary. “What I love about the room is imagining all the people that have been through the room over the years,” he says. “The house is adjacent to an old post road named Old Salt Pond Road and there is a hitching post right outside the windows.” He has heard through the years that the house once had a counterfeiting machine in it, and there are some peculiarities that only an old home can proffer. “There is a stone wall in the water adjacent to the dock in the southwest corner of the property. That inwater rock wall was used as a fish pound to store and/or trap fish in before the days of adequate refrigeration,” he explains. One may think being surrounded by such an estuarine environment only evokes serenity, but for Perry, it’s just the opposite. “People often suggest that I must wake up in the morning and look out the window and think about how lucky I am, but that is not the case,” he admits. “Waking up and going home to the house is an incredible step back in time. It offers amazing views of the vegetable fields [of his Matunuck Vegetable Farm] and the pond, but it also serves as a reminder to me all the work that there is to get done.” April 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

A NEW CHAPTER When Connecticut author Barbara Mariconda relocated to Saunderstown, she chose an overgrown plot of land with easy access to the edge of Narragansett Bay. With the help of local builders, designers and a writer’s limitless
imagination, she turned what had once looked like a jungle into the perfect place to let nature inspire her work. Turn the page to read about how she built her new dream home from the ground up.

Barbara Mariconda wanted a place to be inspired by nature, where she could write her popular children’s books
Something to Write Home About Barbara Mariconda knows a thing or two about starting new chapters. A longtime author, she’s written a bevy of books for children and young adults (as well as professional books for teachers). So when she spotted a parcel of land in Saunderstown three years ago that would be the perfect place to write, relax and start anew in the Ocean State, she made a bold move into unfamiliar territory. “It was really scary,” she says, “and I was doing it on my own… I saw the property and it was a jungle. You couldn’t even walk through it.” But there was something that spoke to her – the bucolic country road, the aged stone walls and the short walk to the edge of Narragansett Bay. She knew this spot would be “it” for her, as in, no more moving.

SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2017
Barbara’s new digs, though still just an idea in her head, were to be planned meticulously, accommodating her for the foreseeable future. She packed up her life in Connecticut and moved into a small apartment for a year as her new home was built. Her first order of business was to meet with friend and architect James Millward who had decades of experience designing homes, particularly beautiful, smart ones by the sea. She approached him with a somewhat ambitious wish list. “I knew I wanted lots of light – windows everywhere. I definitely wanted a screened-in porch. An open floor plan was very important. I wanted a fireplace, and lots of builtins. I’m an author with lots of books,” explains Barbara. With her career in
mind, she knew it would be critical for her writing nook to embrace and be inspired by the outdoors. Easy access to a mind-clearing walk and break to feed the birds – not to mention a chance to breathe in the fresh, salty air – would be especially rewarding. When it came to builders, James recommended South County Post and Beam, based in West Kingston, as he had worked with the firm on past projects. Barbara’s visit to their offices proved to be a game changer. The ageold artistry of post-frame construction – finely crafted timber framing details, lofty ceilings, the warmth of natural woods and a unique “outside in” character – was moving and clearly made an impression. “I loved their office… so it was back to the drawing board,” she
says, laughing. A few renditions later, James, Barbara and the team from South County Post and Beam, including the father and son duo Ken and Josh Bouvier, had settled on a design they all were keen on. However, there were some compromises when it came to Barbara’s original wish list. “I originally wanted my bedroom on the lower level, but I would have lost all the windows on the back side of the living room,” she explains. Barbara calls the solutions the Bouviers came up with “brilliant.” The clever builders designed two spacious closets on the first and second floor to be stacked directly on top of one another. “So if I ever need a residential elevator, they can put it right in,” she explains. They broke ground in October of

2015 and the mild winter that followed was a windfall as construction moved forward swiftly. In keeping with her wishes for an open floor plan, the entire first floor is dedicated to everyday dwelling with the kitchen, dining and living spaces seamlessly flowing from one area to the next. Double doors lead to the screened-in porch, followed by a set of doors that open up to the patio. Back inside, an oversized kitchen island with four chairs is an inherent gathering space, adding to the “comfortable and casual” vibe Barbara sought. The third level doubles as a space for guests and a writing nook, while Barbara’s bedroom occupies most of the second floor. “[People]
have the impression it is much bigger than it is,” says the homeowner. Though around 2,200 square feet, the cathedral-style ceilings, profound openness and smart design are what give that effect, Barbara says. When it came to designing the interior, Ken’s wife Susan, a RISD alum and member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), became Susan’s saving grace. In their very first face-to-face meeting, Barbara brought Susan a vintage Franciscan Apple pattern plate. The collector’s item wasn’t a gift. It was the inspiration. “I said, ‘We’ve got to start here,’” tells Barbara. With Barbara off-site, the two would use the Houzz app to share idea
albums and images of pieces they were considering. “That just expedited the process [and] saved so much time and energy. She just understood what I was looking for.” And Barbara makes no qualms about her preferences. “I’m opinionated and know what I want,” she says unapologetically. A self-confessed “Etsy addict,” shipments were arriving at Barbara’s rental apartment with regularity. In addition, she was falling more in love with her new Ocean State resident status as she perused the bevy of local antique shops, hunting for hidden treasures. “Rhode Island is great for antiques,” she says. “At Re in North Kingstown, I purchased 12-foot oars and held on to
them for a year.” The oars and other nods to nautical styling are prevalent but subtle. Other touches honor the home’s pastoral surroundings, including sliding interior barn doors, an antique garden tiller wheel that has been reinvented as eye-catching art and the kitchen island seating that is made from old tractor seats. “They are really comfortable, but what I like is they add a little bit of this agricultural feel and this land, at one time, was all pasture.” Though intimidating at the outset, Barbara says the entire process has been extraordinary. “It was such an exciting process to see it all come together – a really fulfilling, exciting endeavor. I pinch myself basically every day.” April 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Service has a 60 yard blower truck that can lay down mulch in less than an hour
Alicia and Nick Donadio have a unique business: their Rhode Island Mulch Express Blower Service blows mulch into yard beds, saving homeowners and landscapers countless hours of work. In fact, they’re the only operation in the state that has a 60 yard blower truck, and they work all over Rhode Island. How did you get involved in the mulch installation business? Alicia: My husband Nick and I had been in the landscape industry for over 20 years and realized that it just wasn’t possible to install massive amounts of mulch by hand in the short spring window. Now we help landscapers and contractors get those residential and commercial mulch jobs done in time. We say we’re in the “landscape support business.” How does blown-in mulch happen? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. When the truck arrives at the property, long hoses are pulled from the truck around the property to install the mulch directly into the beds at the depth the customer requests. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. What types of properties do you service? Can you do small properties? We service commercial and residential properties. If mulch needs to be installed, we can do it. We can install

our products on smaller properties, but there is a 10 yard minimum. What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We have all kinds of mulches: brown, black, pine, cedar and more. Many are all-natural, some are color enhanced or organically enhanced. Our other services include Soil and Compost applications, Terraseeding, Certified Playground Chip installations and erosion controls like Silt Sock. What is the advantage to having mulch blown in by the blower truck? Normally, the mulch process involves ordering a dump truck full of mulch, dropping it in a pile in your driveway, and bringing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow over to the beds one at a time. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work. This process is much more convenient than installing mulch manually. How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? Well, every property is unique; it really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour. What do you say to skeptics? We have always told potential customers, “Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year.” Once they see us pull that off fast and efficiently, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.

Feet First opened in 1975 after a quest to find the perfect pair of clogs revealed a niche in Rhode Island that needed to be filled. Now more than 40 years later, Feet First is still offering the of kind footwear expertise you can’t get from big box stores. Owner Ken Richmond took the time to talk with us about spring trends, and finding the right shoe for working on your feet all day.
Photography by Ron Cowie
What is the history behind Feet First? Feet First opened the first store in 1975, but our story really started way before that. My brother Gerald, his girlfriend Amy and I had started a small gift store and at Christmas time we would offer slippers. We had a few styles of moccasins and then requests from customers began to come in for a wider choice of footwear. Around this time my girlfriend, and later my wife, Patricia had really wanted a pair of wooden bottom clogs and we searched all over Rhode Island for some, to no avail. Finally we located a pair of Krone clogs from Denmark in Boston. Realizing that she couldn’t be the only woman in the state to want a pair of clogs, we decided to search out the importer. Around the fall of 1974 we had established a successful relationship with Krone and began offering clogs at the store. Lo and behold the clog search led us to realize that southern Rhode Island was in need of a quality shoe store, and thus Feet First was born. How has the industry changed over the years you’ve been in business? Manufacturing has all but vanished from the United States to overseas production. The production process has become much more automated and efficient and so the quality of footwear has improved due to these advances in production. We feel that being a full service, sit and fit store with a highly skilled fitting staff separates us from poorly trained big box retailers and online vendors.
No restrictions on buying or selling! No membership fees! Acaiberri.com • angelo@aai.necoxmail.com
If the shoe doesn’t fit, Ken Richmond of Feet First can find one that does
What do trained shoe fitters bring to the experience? Our professional staff is often aware of special fitting needs of our regular customers. We offer the opportunity for our customers to finally experience a proper fitting shoe. And many, after years of wearing something with an improper fit, have been able to see the difference the personal touch can make and they have become not only loyal customers, but ambassadors for Feet First, recommending us to family and friends far and wide. It is our customer satisfaction that has kept Feet First successful for the last 42 years. Tell us what kind of orthotic and comfort options you carry for those on their feet all day. Nothing can ever beat a properly fitted pair of shoes and our professional staff understands what it takes to assure proper fit. That is in part the reason Feet First carries a plethora of orthotic
Feet First 153 Old Tower Hill Road, Wakefield • 783-8074 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich • 885-0606 FeetFirstFootwear.com
devices. We have proper inserts to accommodate long arches, short arches, high arches or low arches. This is the reason a certified professional shoe fitter can accommodate a wide array of foot types. It is also the reason there is no one perfect shoe for everyone. For those customers who are on their feet all day, our staff takes the time to understand what it entails to assure proper fit and all day comfort. We have helped many customers over the years get back on their feet and active again after years of suffering foot ailments. What kind of styles are popular for spring? With spring arriving everyone will want to lighten up with open toe and athletic shoes. This spring you can find some new styles from comfort brands like OluKai, Birkenstock, OOFOS, Naot, Dansko, Vionic and for those seeking a more fashion forward looks we offer options like Wanda Panda. Sandals will be the main focus of spring with primary colors becoming really prominent. With athletics it’s lighter and brighter. Time to let the colorful warmth of spring shoe options lead us away from the cool, dark grey of winter.

SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2017
painless and left my skin looking dewy and refreshed… said not one single Rhode Islander, ever. We might have had it relatively easy with snow this year, but the bitterly cold wind – followed by blasts of hot, dry air – were still brutal on my skin. When T.S. Eliot wrote that April is the cruelest month, I think he was looking in the mirror after a New England winter. When the weather started to match the season, it was time to emerge from my long winter’s Netflix and chill. I knew I’d be a lot happier, and feel more ready to reenter society, if I could shed the layer of dull, dry (and, in a fun new twist this year, hyperpigmented) skin that clouded my vision every time I caught a glimpse of myself. So I called Amanda Grant, hoping that she could save me from my reflection. I had heard good things about Amanda Grant Skincare. Or, more accurately, I had heard someone say that Amanda was South County’s best-kept skincare secret. She’s a one-woman operation out of Lafayette Mill in North Kingstown, who keeps her business as simple as possible: no receptionist, no fussy tranquility room – just her, her client and high-quality skincare. When I first met Amanda, I was pleasantly surprised by several things. First, that she uses only all-natural products, which in my case were by Korres and Jeffrey James Botanicals. And second, that there wasn’t going to be any difficult list of services to choose from. For Amanda, there’s facial and facial. “I keep it simple,” she says. “I customize every service, and I encourage my guests to keep a very simple, natural and healthy routine. That’s what gives the skin balance.” Every service, for Amanda, also includes Derma Sweep, which is an advanced form of microdermabrasion. She believes it’s better because, as she explained to me, “it works like a personal trainer for the skin,” melding with the skin’s cycle to increase collagen production and balance the skin’s pH and sebaceous levels. “I like Derma Sweep
because it doesn’t shock the skin into submission,” she says, “which is what true anti-aging means.” Derma Sweep was particularly appealing to me because of its benefits: it smoothes fine lines (which I have now, because apparently time is marching across my face) and it fades pigmentation and discoloration, which I also have, because the harsh, freezing winds from the last season left my skin extra dry and irritated, and it’s been slow to heal, probably because of the slow-to-start spring. The machine itself was totally painless – like a little vacuum on your face – and Amanda integrated the Derma Sweep into the facial between the
cleansing and exfoliation. The rest of the facial was also total bliss, including shiatsu massage and facial acupressure, using botanicals like lemon, rose and lavender. After the treatment, my skin didn’t look like it normally does after a facial. Usually, I look fresh because a lot of things have been put on my skin that appear that way. After the Derma Sweep facial, I had a middle-of-summer healthy glow because of what was happening in my skin. Amanda recommends a Derma Sweep every six weeks or so to connect your skin to a healthy cycle of healing. After just one, and the benefits and changes I saw, I can’t imagine how great I will feel after my next.

THREE REASONS TO CELEBRATE First, Narragansett’s Trio Restaurant has recently reopened, after a brief closure for renovations. Second, they’ve debuted an expanded bar and lounge. And third, the weather is finally warm enough for a sunny stroll along the sea wall apres cocktails. On
top of all that, the restaurant has a new menu, with its signature local, seafood-heavy offerings, including pizzas, pasta and grill selections. Looks like it’s time to take a taste… or three. 15 Kingstown Road, Narragansett. 792-4333, Trio-RI.com Trio in Narragnsett has a new large and a new menu

Tapas on Thames The owners of Stoneacre Pantry deliver exciting Spanish flavors at La Vasca a three-hour feast at La Vasca in Newport, having done our level best to hit as much of the menu as possible, our Spanish friend Esther revealed her devastating criticism to the owners: there were several eñe’s missing. With two Spanish professors at the table, and the bottle of “capra loca” Ribero del Duero ($38) polished off, one could hear the sound of pens being unsheathed like so many espadas. The corrected menu was delivered, somewhat apologetically. Take note: if you’re serving a Spaniard sardines and only getting spelling corrections, you are doing something very right. Not that this is so unexpected. La Vasca is from the Stoneacre Pantry folks, sprouting up at an otherwise unchanged Thames Street location while they move Stoneacre to a larger place on Washington Square. Looking through its large foggy windows, La Vasca has the same lively crowd of diners, but a bold new concept. As the name states plainly, Newport is getting something entirely new: small plates and Basque cuisine, perfect for our foursome of friends to share. Straddling the French and Spanish border, the Basque region is quite diverse, but to me it means wine and pintxos most of all. There, you can waltz into a pintxo bar and

tour through a staggering variety of cuisine bite by bite, from tortilla to morcilla. The typical Spanish pintxo bar probably wouldn’t meet health code here, with its toothpick-studded delicacies lined up in the open air. La Vasca is much less casual than what you’ll find in the Basque region, but there’s a finer touch and food made perfectly fresh to order. Like good pintxos should be, the food here isn’t a matter of courses, so much as a delicious parade stopping by your table as you take your time chatting and drinking wine. The parade kicked off with a couple of extra amuse-bouches, a nice touch when we made such a large order, plated carefully on Japanese soup spoons. The first was a bite of olive, tomato and tuna; familiar, comforting and delicious. The second was mussels and cucumber, which was superbly unexpected. The crisp and bright texture of the cucumber was the perfect match for mussels. The Scallop Ceviche ($12) was a fine dice of scallops plated right on the shell it came from. The acidity of the lime and the sharpness of the onions combined delightfully with the mild heat of chilis and some crisp frisee. More Newport cocktail party than rowdy Basque bar, four little
Patatas Bravas
bite-size pancakes ($14) appeared, topped with creme fraiche and trout roe. Similarly, our Beet-cured Salmon and Crème Fraîche ($11) is a long way from escabeche, but it was a favorite of the whole table. Its flavor was more sashimi and less a salty gravlax. La Vasca is willing to travel. The Miso-glazed Eggplant ($11) with Napa cabbage is a world away from País Vasco, but with perfectly painted grill
marks, a crisp skin full of spark and a perfectly cooked interior, no one cared. Likewise, the Merguez Sausage ($14) so often found in France is a North African recipe, reflective of the Moorish conquest of Europe. With all the lighter seafood we were tasting, this incredibly moist lamb sausage and wild rice was a hearty counterpoint, with honest and simple flavors. Bacalao Croquetas ($5) are a staple of Spanish cuisine, and these were exemplary; ample, full of fish and delicately breaded. Made with more precision than most, they were instantly familiar. While the Spinach and Mushroom Empanadas ($11) were a little lost in the dizzying array of other brighter flavors, the Huevos Rellenos ($9), which you may know as deviled eggs, found new heights with smoked trout. You simply can’t get more classic than Patatas Bravas ($8). These were just a bit more nuanced than the fried chunks and bright orange sauce you’ll find at your average Spanish bar. Natural colored soffrito aioli met circular roasted potato slices, and the combo worked just as well. Our dinner companion, Esther, grew up on the sea in Andalucia and said La Vasca’s Grilled Sardines ($14) transported her back to days on the beach and sardines al espeto, where

they are salted, skewered and barbecued in the sand. Less the grit of blown sand, she said these sardines “had that feeling.” One of my favorite dishes was the charred Point Judith squid with Romesco sauce ($14). With lots of mixed flavors and perfectly cooked tubes and tentacles, this dish shows why Spanish food makes so much sense with our ingredients, in the right hands. We finished with an extra palate cleanser: an orange and beet granita. Just a little taste or two, this
was sharp, refreshing and adored by everyone at the table. I could have finished here, but I cannot refuse a Gateau Basque ($9). With its perfectly browned and hashmarked top, and soft frangipane interior, this tarte would bring in passers-by from the cobblestone streets of Saint Jean Pied-du-Pont. Luckily for us it’s at La Vasca on Thames instead. It may have arrived quietly, but this blend of Basque and local flavors on small sharing plates is as unique and independent as its namesake.

Saluting the Captain Cap’n Jack’s celebrates 45 years of serving up local seafood New Owners, Same Great Taste Though under new management for the last few months, Rome Point Cafe has kept many menu favorites and added some new ones. The biggest change is the addition of The Nitro Cart’s nitroinfused cold brew coffee. It’s on tap, which to be honest is just plain cool. The frothy brew doesn’t really need anything else – it’s creamy all on its own. As far as the menu, there are still plenty of breakfast choices to get hot off the griddle like sandwiches, Benedicts, omelettes and more. 820 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. 294-2122, Facebook: Rome Point Cafe
West Greenwich has a new spot for pizza lovers: Arcadia Pizza. Pies come on a choice of Neapolitan, Sicilian and gluten-free crusts with toppings ranging from Italian classics to comfort food favorites like Buffalo Chicken and If you love loaded baked potatoes but hate forks, Arcadia NY System. They also offer Pizza has you covered grass fed burgers, grinders, mac and cheese, salads and specials like Fish and Chips on the menu. Wash it all down with one of several local beers on tap, like Grey Sail, Narragansett and Revival Brewing. 780 Victory Highway, West Greenwich. 392-3130, Arcadia.Pizza
Dine on the Island Cap’n Jack’s is showing no signs of slowing down after 45 years of serving seafood classics in Wakefield
In a state with
a constantly rotating culinary scene, it’s a breath of fresh air to have tried and true restaurants to go back to time and time again. Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant after 45 years of serving up local seafood, isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The now expansive restaurant started out as a to-go window, pumping out Clam Cakes and Chowder and Fish and Chips. As it continued to grow, Italian-American options were added to the menu, like Eggplant Parmesan and Ricotta-stuffed Calamari. But the one thing that’s never changed? Getting their seafood from Galilee and other New England ports. Fortyfive years ago it made financial sense to source locally. Now, it’s crucial to diners that local farmers are represented on the menu. “If a local oyster isn’t available at the raw bar, people just aren’t interested,”
56

says co-owner Jack Piemonte Jr. The dessert game is also strong at Cap’n Jack’s. Jack’s mother took over the baking after graduating from Johnson and Wales University, and according to Jack, his mom makes “the best Grapenut Pudding in the world.” This writer is obsessed with her Chocolate Chip Cookies, and picks one up every single time there’s an opportunity. Over the years Jack has made small changes to the menu, never forgetting to keep the restaurant’s tried-and-true dishes alive. “I would be a fool to get rid of Clam Cakes and Chowder and Fish and Chips,” says Jack. “No matter what we decide to put on the menu, there will always be a line out the door for them.” 706 Succotash Road, Wakefield. 7894556, CapnJacksRestaurant.com

Executive chef Lionel Weal is bringing new ideas to Twin Willows while honoring its traditions
How do you go about deciding what works on your menu? I listen to the pickiest people, because I want to be able to cater to everybody. If you can find the pickiest person, see what they like and tie it all together, it can get you places. One of the pickiest

people I know is my girlfriend. She’s a tough critic. Basically, if I can put a smile on her face, then I can put a smile on most people’s. What’s one of the specials you just tested? One thing I was testing was a grilled pork chop dish served with grilled asparagus. It’s with apples, pear, jalapeños and sage, which turns into an applesauce. A lot of people are scared of spice. When they hear jalapeno, they think it’s going to really bite them, but it doesn’t. Every chop I do, I marinate for at least 24 hours in herb oil. The diners probably know the menu better than you do. How’s the feedback been? The feedback I’ve been getting is great. I get stopped quite often walking through the restaurant: they know my name, but I don’t even know who they are. People give me ideas, and I try to throw something out there for them.
You take requests? Like what? One of the customers is a regular; he’s been coming for years and years. He asked for American Chop Suey, so I did it for him. The guy is in his 80s, and he rated it as one of the best ones he’s ever had. That was a big honor, because often at that age your taste buds are set in their ways; if they don’t want it, they don’t want it. So for him to sit down, enjoy it and recommend it to other customers is a big thing for me. Do you have plans for changes beyond the specials? I won’t do the menu change until May or June. Right now I’m figuring out what works, what doesn’t work, what flavors they like, what vegetables they like, so I know more about what areas to touch. This place has been open for
going on 33 years, there are people who have been coming here all their life, religiously, so I have to slowly but gradually change it. I have some great stuff coming up. Right now I’m working on a vegetarian menu, and I’m looking to bring in different flavors and backgrounds of food to Narragansett. What got you into cooking originally? My mother, Owena. My mom is a great cook, she was very well known in her home town for her cooking. They loved her fried chicken and upside down pineapple cake. I remember watching people’s reactions to food and seeing the smile my mom had sitting back watching people at church or at home enjoying her cooking. I just love putting the meal out and seeing people’s reaction when they take that first bite.

When I first spoke to Lionel Weal, the new executive chef for Twin Willows, he was preparing to cook for the family. No, not his family, but instead the one he has inherited by joining this three-decadesold Narragansett institution. Various members of the owner’s family are his taste testers every Tuesday when he’s figuring out weekly specials. Following on their extensive remodel a couple years back, it seems the refresh continues at Twin Willows with Lionel’s hiring, but they’ll continue to do their unique combination of classic seafood and pub fare with a slight Irish touch. I spoke to Lionel about how he approaches making changes at such a local fixture, his critical girlfriend and his mom’s upside down pineapple cake.

JUST DUCKY Get quacking because it’s time for the 19th Annual Pawcatuck River Duck Race. The race dumps 20,000 tiny yellow rubber duckies into the Pawcatuck River where they then take a leisurely float. Over 90 ducks will be chosen from the pack and each will be awarded one of many fun prizes. Every duck is available for purchase, with all proceeds going to local charities and
schools. In addition to this main event, there will be children’s booths with games and prizes, food booths with all kinds of delicious treats, and plenty more. This is a great event for the whole family. How often are you going to see a flock of rubber duckies floating down the river? Downtown Westerly, Westerly. 596-7761, OceanChamber.org Make a splash at the Pawcatuck River Duck Race on April 29

THE MUST LIST 10 essential events happening in April
1.
April 1: You don’t want to be late for this date. Aside from the usual heckles and pranks of April Fool’s Day, Amenity Aid is hosting their third annual Foolishly Fun Mad Tea Party featuring a tea bar, silent auction and, of course, foolishly fun hats of all shapes and sizes. Join in on the fun by wearing a wild hat inspired by your favorite Alice in Wonderland character, or wear one of your own creation. Donations of personal hygiene products will be accepted, assisting the organization in providing for shelters and other supported organizations in their network. 2100 Post Road, Warwick. AmenityAid.org
2.
April 7-30: The warm weather of spring brings about more than just flowers and Easter eggs. Animals begin to roam, swim and crawl their way around Rhode Island once again, and you can see this animal inspiration in Wickford Art Association’s Fur, Feathers and Fins exhibit. This open juried exhibit features “animals in art” submissions that are sure to inspire. Join the association for their opening reception, or plan a visit anytime this month to see a different kind of spring awakening. 36 Beach Street, North Kingstown. 294-6840, WickfordArt.org
Search for the golden egg at the Camouflaged Egg Hunt on April 8
Stop and smell the flowers at Wickford Daffodil Days, April 29-30
4.
April 8: If you’re a jazz fan, you don’t want to miss the Debra Mann Jazz Quartet as it makes its way to the Courthouse stage. Celebrated jazz pianist Debra Mann, a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, has been performing in the Northeast for three decades. The highly gifted artist and her ensemble put together a sound that is sure to make the evening one to remember. 3481 Kingstown Road, West Kingston. 782-1018, CourthouseArts.org
5.
6. 3.
April 8: The Audubon Society of RI is once again fulfilling its mission of connecting people and nature by hosting their annual Camouflaged Egg Hunt, a “green” alternative to the traditional egg hunt. The Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge gives a beautiful scenic backdrop while kids scour the premises for the elusive brown wooden eggs instead of the usual easy-to-spot plastic variety. Kids will get to turn in their eggs for prizes – with a special grand prize for golden eggs – as they learn about nature in a fun and engaging way. 99 Pardon Joslin Road, Exeter. 949-5454, ASRI.org

SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2017
April 14: You don’t have to fly to Jamaica to experience great reggae music. Culture, a roots reggae band from 1970s Jamaica, is celebrating their hit record Two Sevens Clash with a 40-year anniversary tour, making a stop at Ocean Mist. After his father’s passing, Kenyatta Hill took over lead vocals and continues the legacy. Don’t miss out on a chance to celebrate what Rolling Stone named one of the 100 Coolest Records Ever Made. 895 Matunuck Beach Road, Wakefield. 782-3740, OceanMist.net
7.
April 16: It’s Easter once again, and the annual fight for those candy-filled shells is upon us. Kids and adults of all ages are invited to Ocean House for their annual Easter egg event, featuring the classic egg hunt and a chance to see the Easter Bunny himself. Don’t forget the camera! 1 Bluff Avenue, Westerly. 584-7000, OceanHouseRI.com
Photo (left) courtesy of the Audubon Society
April 9: Fans of live music can put their ticket money to a good cause this weekend when artists take the stage for the Jumping for Jonnycake concert at the Knickerbocker Cafe. The Jonnycake Center provides services to assist individuals through crisis situations and help them find their independence again, which is something we can really rock out to. With a lineup including gems like Sugar Ray and Johnny and the East Coast Rockers, there’s a lot to love about this event. 35 Railroad Avenue, Westerly. 315-5070, KnickMusic.com
