KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER We Know What Moms Like
Ready To Ditch Your “Mom Hair?”
You promised yourself you weren’t going to be like other moms. You would be the one to maintain a great body, a successful career, a killer wardrobe and a trendy hairstyle. But somehow between the car pool and Sponge Bob you’ve replaced your chic hair with “mom hair.” Celebrity hair stylist Hallie Bowman describes this as the “soccer mom” look. “It’s short-ish, above the shoulders, chin length, layered and usually tucked. Think Martha Stewart,” she says. But with just a little professional tweaking and the right finishing touches, we can help turn your look from frazzle to dazzle. At Kenneth Cote, we know that even though you’re busy you still want to look your best. And caring for yourself shows confidence and self-esteem to others, including your kids. The good news is we can update your “mom hair” with a few usually minor adjustments. Our goal is to help you look fantastic with a minimum of effort that won’t take precious time away from your busy schedule. So call us today. And while you’re getting rid of your mom hair, ditch the mom jeans too! With input from Deborah Dunham/ Stylelist.com

Less Frizz = Easier Styling
As a busy mom, finding time to blowdry, straighten and flat iron your hair can be nearly impossible. Our Express Blowout Keratin Treatment is the solution to your styling dilemma! It will reduce your styling time dramatically while reducing frizz up to 95%. Although it’s not a straightener, it will reduce curl by at least one-third and with proper at-home maintenance the effects will last 12-16 weeks! And less styling time leaves you more time for the things that are truly important. Leaving no greasy residue, you can even shampoo your hair the next day. And unlike others, this keratin treatment meets safety standards set by Health Canada and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review. This month our Express Blowout is only $199.
THE KENNETH COTE SPA DAY OF BEAUTY: It doesn’t get any better than this! Includes a Steam Shower, One Hour Relaxation Massage, Kenneth Cote Signature Facial, Pedicure, Manicure, Shampoo & Styling, Cosmetic Application and lite lunch. Complete head-to-toe renewal that will leave her feeling relaxed, refreshed and renewed. $236

Grace Lentini Writer Our cover story writer, Grace Lentini, is a food blogger (among other things). Her blog, Graceful Dining, arose out of an obsessive passion for all things food and photography. Besides food, you can find her photographing the New England coastline and other hidden gems the landscape has to offer; her photos have been showcased at various venues throughout the state including Java Madness, The Providence Art Festival and Kettle Pond Visitors Center. The inspiration for these photos stems from her love of nature and her work in Wildlife and Conservation Biology, from which she received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Rhode Island. “Living in the Ocean State has given me an appreciation for not only the landscape and the wildlife that inhabits it, but also where we get our food from and the people who provide it. Our small state is more interconnected than you would imagine.”

Raise a Glass For years, it had been a dry spell in Rhode Island. We have our handful of beloved wine and beer producers (like Langworthy Farm in Westerly and, of course, the soon-to-be-completelylocal-again Narragansett Beer), but there wasn’t much new in the local liquor scene. But in the last few months, new booze has been popping up all over the state. Providence has seen the emergence of Revival Brewing and The Bucket Brewery,
but South County has had three new operations start recently: a Westerly brewery, a winery in West Greenwich that has just released locally produced wines and a distillery in North Kingstown that is one of the very few producers of single-malt whiskey in America. The best part? You don’t have to take our word for why they’re so interesting. Read all about them in our cover story, and then head out for a taste yourself. -Julie
From Our Readers Aw, Shucks I wanted to thank you for contacting me and putting my oyster farm in your magazine. We very much enjoyed the entire experience and are elated with the resulting article [“Shuck It to Me,” April 2012]. Laurel Mulherin did a great job with the pictures and Linda Beaulieu’s article was spot-on. I look forward to working with you again as the farm is really starting to take off. Local Bling Wear your initial on your sleeve… or neck Talk about eye-catching. The reversible initial pendants and bracelets made by Kendra Phillip Jewelry come in gold, rose gold and silver plated finishes. When they catch the light, they shine like coins in a treasure chest. In fact, you won’t just look rich when wearing one of the line’s signature pieces – you’ll feel rich too. Kendra Pariseault, who owns the company with her childhood friend Phillip Sowa, says their inspiration comes from modern, sophisticated and elegant women such as design icon Coco Chanel and cultural icon Holly Golightly. While the line is sold online and in high-end boutiques from here to Maine, its manufactured exclusively in Rhode Island, where Pariseault and Sowa are from. “This is an aspect of

the business that is very personal and important to both of us,” Pariseault says proudly. While the business is a new venture (started in April 2011) it’s already seen booming success, which has called for the development of new pieces including their Textured Mini Cuffs (the hammered rose gold cuff is our favorite). “Phil has grown up with jewelry manufacturing in his blood and I have always had a love for fashion and jewelry,” Pariseault says. Well, it shows. Locally, items are available for purchase at Sweet Twist or New England Invitations, both in East Greenwich, and at Kristina Richards or Jason & Co., both in Newport. An Island Love Pact Who can forget all the buzz around town last summer regarding a movie being filmed in our area starring powerhouse celebrities Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton? Well, the time has finally come to see our beloved state and its beautiful scenery up on the big screen in acclaimed director Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom.
The film is set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965 and tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together in the wilderness. The name of the movie comes from a particular scene in a cove that the young lovers find on their journey. The cove is said to have been a part of Jamestown’s his-

Be sure to look for the much-anticipated motion picture, set to premiere as the opening film of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on May 16. It’s scheduled for an American release on May 25. www.focusfeatures.com/moonrise_kingdom. –Eilish Shaffer

South Kingstown Farmer’s Market is part of the festival
Traditionally, there are many rites of spring; in Southern Rhode Island, one of the newest is the annual east Farm Spring Festival and plant sale, which draws thousands of worshipers of everything that is green, flowering and sustainable. The festival, which is officially sponsored by URI, features plant sales (ornamental and vegetable), gobs of information on how to make your growing season more fruitful, food, music and children’s activities. The annual URI Master Gardener plant sale is the major fundraiser for the URI Outreach Center, which provides educational help throughout the state to community gardens, school children and adults. The Master Gardeners have vegetable plant varieties not usually found at commercial venues. The South Kingstown Farmer’s Market is also part of the festival, and there are specialty plants offered by the RI Wild Plant Society as well. Rain barrels will be on sale (some can be pre-ordered at www.riwaterlady.com) and the gardeners will offer free pH soil testing. (Bring a cupful of soil from your garden or lawn using samples taken from various spots.) Several URI departments will offer special displays, activities and demonstrations such as how to fillet fish. At least four workshops are planned, including installation of drip irrigation, container gardening, using

Rhode Island native plants and making hypertufas for your garden. In the vegetable garden, Master Gardeners will explain vertical gardening, organic controls and composting. The RI Commercial Fisheries Center will offer free chowder, and country music will be provided on the grounds. One large tent will be home to scores of children’s games and craft activities. Children can also visit some of the small farm animals that will be trucked to the site from URI’s Peckham Farm. New this year will be a drop-off operation for unwanted electronic devices such as TV sets and computers. Items that will be accepted without cost include residential computers, laptops, PDAs, cell phones, computer mice, keyboards, networking equipment, cabling, flat screens, CRT monitors, stereo equipment, telephones, cordless phones, wide screen/tube televisions, microwaves, small appliances, lead batteries and other electronic gadgetry. Mini-refrigerators, dehumidifiers and household air conditioners will be accepted for a $10 disposal fee. Free parking is available. Veteran festival-goers usually bring wagons, strollers or other wheeled devices to transport their purchases to the parking areas. East Farm is located on Route 108, Kingston. www.uri. edu/cels/ceoceast-farm-spring-festival.html. –Rudolph Hempe

May is upon us once again – let the traditions commence. Swing around a Maypole; pig-out at a Memorial Day barbecue; shake your maracas on Cinco de Mayo. Breathe easy, fashionistas: you can wear white again, sans shame. For all you sinners (myself included), the month of May is synonymous with gambling and booze – in the form of the Kentucky Derby and mint juleps, of course. But, a select few (who are tough as blood redpainted nails), know that there’s a new derby tradition hitting the Ocean State this month. So ladies, if you’re wearing an oversized hat while daintily sipping a sweet tea, you might want to step aside. Make way for the intrepid and indomitable roller derby girls, as the inaugural Northeast Derby Convention comes to the Rhode Island Convention Center from May 25-27. The event will play host to elite derby trainers and coaches for off-skates seminars, skating clinics (ouch) and scrimmages (double ouch). Attendees can also expect a full vendor expo, games and parties. Founded in 2004, the Providence Roller Derby league was the first allfemale, flat-track roller derby league in all of New England. Currently, the league practices in Narragansett; bouts are held both in Narragansett and in Providence. A self-governed non-profit, the league consists of three home teams and two travel teams. Charlestown resident Cindy Lou Screw plays on three of those

five teams: Killah Bees, the Rhode Island Riveters and the Old Money Honeys (whose tongue-in-cheek motto is, “We play to win, equipped with our best assets: Daddy’s money and Mummy’s attitude”). In order to be a derby girl, one must be not just rugged but dedicated and inordinately hardworking. Practices can be long – four hours sometimes – and frequent in occurrence. Cindy Lou practices several times per week, often with aches and pains that would keep most of us relegated to our couches. These girls don’t play around. With names such as Shelby Bruisin’, Bust’er Apart, Trophy Knife and SmackGyver, those in the crowd get a hint of what’s to come just by reading the backs of jerseys as the ladies enter the coated concrete skating rink. Speaking of fashion sense, the derby divas keep it interesting with their bold make-up, brightly colored (and patterned) knee socks and a vast array of accessories – some of which are temporary (fishnets) and some of which are not (tattoos). It’s not uncommon to see a few facial piercings either, which may seem counterintuitive as the odds of them getting ripped right out are not exactly slim to none. According to Cindy Lou, “One of my teammates got hit in the face once and her brand new nose ring got knocked right out. She couldn’t find it anywhere. Knowing that the hole would close right up, I took my nose ring out and gave it to
her. I call that my ‘true friend moment.’” Richmond resident Rhode Kill, who plays on the Providence Mob Squad, has been playing with the league for six years. “When I started, I had no idea how much athleticism, game knowledge or dedication was required,” Rhode says of her beginnings. The Mob Squad is a home team. I retired from the Riveters, our all star/travel team, at the end of last season, after five fun filled years.” When the league formed, Mob Squad was the only team; that first batch of derby debutantes tended toward Mafia-themed names. Most skaters choose their names nowadays based on their interests, heroes or favorite TV, movie or book characters. “I chose the name Rhode Kill after brainstorming with friends and family. After I had a good list, I took my three favorites and did a poll. Rhode Kill won by a landslide,” she says with a laugh. The skaters also pick a tagline. “My number is 90mph,” Rhode says, “and my tagline is ‘She’ll go out of her way to run you down.’” Most times, each skater’s individual look, follows the theme of her name. Rhode says of some of her fashion choices, “I like what I like. I have added booty shorts, false eyelashes and face paint.” Rhode also adjusts her style to the team she’s currently playing on. “Mob is pretty tough and gangsta, so I wear black, pinstripes and gold highlights. When I played for the Riveters I did more of

a ‘40s pin-up look, with polka dots like Rosie the Riveter herself.” And as for the socks? “I have a wonderful derby sock collection,” Rhode says proudly. “Many sport brass knuckles and guns, which go great with the mob theme. Others have anchors and polka dots, which went great with my Riveters persona.” Like Cindy Lou, Rhode is no stranger to hard work – and being on the injured list. She practices three nights per week and spends several days in the gym in addition to that doing cardio, lifting weights or biking and running. “I enjoy doing triathlons and even did a Tough Mudder competition in Vermont last year,” Rhode says, further cementing her athletic prowess. Bruises, bumps and cuts are kids’ play to this tough lady warrior. In fact, her worst skating-induced injury thus far has been a separated shoulder that was later re-injured several times. She now wears a shoulder brace to prevent further damage. “I’ve also had my jaw dislocated twice and have broken a finger,” she says, “but other than that just the regular bumps and bruises.” Right. That’s the reason Rhode – and most of the other derby girls – train so hard, and so often. “The more fit you are,” she says, “the less injuries that will happen… and the recovery is always faster.” It’s also important to stay abreast of current trends and research, including proper body mechanics and choosing appropriate safety gear. Hence, the excitement regarding the upcoming derby convention. “I think [the convention] is a for any skater to learn, meet great people with similar interests and just have some great derby fun,” she says with enthusiasm. Allie Trela, who is better known as Dee Stortion, is the brain behind the Northeast Derby Convention. Dee owns Bruised Boutique Skate Shop of Nashua,
NH – the largest brick and mortar roller derby store in the entire country. “I was told that I never took my roller skates off as a kid,” Dee says, “but I didn’t know I was tough back then. I found out through roller derby that I am a lot tougher than I thought I was.” She’s had her nose broken and was “sort of okay with it.” She’s dislocated and broken a shoulder mid-bout, but returned to the ring to play the rest of the game. “I have pushed myself through… and have come out the other side stronger.” Dee is the poster child for persistence and perseverance. “I think what makes a good derby girl is someone who pushes themselves mentally and physically to grow. Eating right, sleeping enough, practicing, cross training, going to clinics… and treating yourself as an athlete will have profound results on how you perform.” Dee saw a huge need for a convention here in the East Coast. “We have tournaments, but nothing where we can retreat for three days and learn about everything derby. It’s like derby heaven without all the pressure of tournaments.” She’s designed it so that skaters don’t have to stand in lines or pre-register for classes, really “bringing the level of derby up on the East Coast.” It may be held locally, but tickets are being sold all over the world. “Not only should this event help you become a better skater,” she says, “but we’ve also included tons of sponsored games, prizes, events and parties, so it should be a lot of fun too.” The Northeast Derby Convention 2012 will take place May 25-27 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, 1 Sabin Street, Providence. Tickets are available at www. brownpapertickets.com/event/214867. For more information visit www.derbyconvention.com or email Dee at info@ derbyconvention.com.

the American Revolution
Sons of Liberty is bringing single-malt whiskey across the pond
Why can’t the United States have a really good single-malt whiskey? This is the question that the founder of Sons of Liberty Spirits Company, Narragansett native Michael Reppucci asked himself as he was studying at the London Business School. During his time in the U.K., Reppucci became accustomed to drinking Scotch – really good Scotch – and was inspired to create something just as drinkable in the United States. Shortly after returning, Reppucci worked with retired Maker’s Mark Master Distiller David Pickerell for three years to fully understand the whiskey distilling process from soup to nuts. The result is a craft distillery in South Kingstown, the first whiskey maker in Rhode Island since Prohibition, which launched last December. Sons of Liberty’s flagship single-malt whiskey, Uprising, is exclusively available in Rhode Island at over 170 restaurants and package stores throughout the state. How is single-malt whiskey different from typical American whiskey? American whiskey is usually made from a mash of grains such as corn, barley and wheat. Single-malt refers to the use of one type of grain; Uprising is strictly made from a blend of malted barley imported from the U.K. All whiskey starts as a form of beer and this is where its flavor profile, the backbone of the whiskey, develops. The backbone of Uprising comes from an unhopped
The Sons of Liberty team: Chris Guillette, Daniel Murphy, Mike Reppucci, Bryan Ricard
stout beer made with the malted barley blend that delivers coffee and dark chocolate flavors. Once distilled, it is transferred to lightly toasted oak barrels, which account for the vanilla and mocha notes that are very distinct in the final product. Uprising is a very young whiskey, aged just under a year, as showcased by its very light color. So how does one drink this young, craft whiskey? On the rocks is the purest way to experience Uprising. Other ways would be in a traditional high ball with Uprising and ginger ale; on the rocks with a twist of lemon rind; used in a Manhattan; or in a Nor’easter, which
consists of Barritt’s Ginger Beer, Uprising and a dash of bitters. Reppucci wanted to provide imbibers with a true whiskey experience. Sons of Liberty Spirits Company has plans beyond Uprising, including the mid-May release of Loyal 9, a cucumber mint vodka, and a seasonal line of whiskey that will be ready by fall. Reppucci is aiming for a seasonal limited release of his new products, which allows him to enjoy the creativity that his craft distillery offers. Just as the Sons of Liberty were vital to the American Revolution, Uprising is an opportunity to revolutionize whiskey for those wanting to support local, craft spirits. Head to the distillery on Wednesdays between 10am–4pm and on Saturdays between 10am–2pm for a free tour. 1425 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown. 284-4006, www.solspirits.com.

Located on the third floor, it offers over 200 single-malt scotches and a variety of whiskeys. The Mews also offers a Scotch club to those developing a passion for single-malt. Wolfrock Wine and spirits (860 South County Trail, Exeter. 294-4251, www.wolfrockwineandspirits.com) offers a comprehensive selection of single-malt scotch, blended scotch, Irish whiskey, American whiskey and Canadian whiskey with a more than knowledgeable staff. Located along Route 1, another place where the employees are extremely well informed is the Kingstown liquor mart (6800 Post Road, North Kingstown, 884-4203). Grey Sail Brewing Company brings craft beer to Westerly With the local beer
movement gaining momentum in Rhode Island, it is no surprise that another locally owned and operated brewery would be up and coming. Grey Sail Brewing Company, which opened in Westerly last November, started brewing its Flagship Ale and Leaning Chimney Smoked Porter in mid-November and currently has three other styles on the way. The Flagship Ale (4.5%) is Grey Sail’s, well, flagship beer and is a true session-style beer. It is a lager cream ale that is light bodied and great for any occasion. The flavor is malt forward with underlying noble hop bitterness. Most importantly, it is well-balanced and finishes clean and bright. Leaning Chimney Smoked Porter (6.0%) is currently available at bars and restaurants. If you enjoy dark beers or haven’t found the right one just yet, this is the one to try. Again, what makes Grey Sail beers so drinkable and enjoyable is how they are so well-balanced, bright and smooth. The Smoked Porter is no exception. It is a satisfying marriage of smoky caramel with sultry undertones that are not too sweet. It would seem to pair just as well with a bacon-wrapped filet mignon as with a chocolate volcano cake. Moving to the other end of the spectrum is the Flying Jenny Extra Pale Ale (5.3%). This made its debut at the Great International Beer Festival in Providence on April 14, and is now available for purchase. This Extra Pale Ale does
not disappoint in the hops department. It is made with a Cascade hop that has a characteristically light grapefruit flavor, which is then dry hopped – accounting for its amazingly bold hoppy aroma. And what summer would be complete without a Belgianstyle wheat beer? Grey Sail once again delivers. The Summer Seasonal Belgium Wit (3.5%) arrives in late May. It is a white beer that is unfiltered, lightly hopped with subtle notes of orange peel and coriander. It’s designed to leave you wanting more as the flavors slowly intensify. And last but not least, is the Stargazer Imperial Stout (9.7%). Grey Sail’s distributor asked the brewery to create a beer specifically for American Craft Beer Week (May 14-20). Available in kegs and 22-ounce bottles, there are rich hints of deep, dark coffee, fruit and cacao in a hoppy, chocolaty and silky brew – definitely an end of the night kind of beer. Grey Sail Brewing Company has answered the call for locally brewed craft beer. It is poured out of nearly 100 tap lines and is available at close to 100 package stores throughout the state, with a concentration in the Westerly/ Pawcatuck area and the Route 1 corridor. Born of a love for home brewing and grown with the help and support of friends and family, Grey Sail has all the ingredients to make it a Rhode Island tradition for years to come. 63 Canal Street, Westerly. 212-7592, www.greysailbrewing.com.

The first establishment that poured Grey Sail’s Flagship Ale was the malted Barley (42 High Street, Westerly. 315-2184, www.themaltedbarleyri.com). In addition to carrying Grey Sail products, the Malted Barley has over 40 beers on tap and another 100+ bottle varieties that go with their famous pretzel sandwiches. In the mood for a fun atmosphere with a few local brews on tap? Head over to Cleats sports Club (in the Alley Katz Bowling Center, 116 Granite Street, Westerly. 596-7474, www.alleykatzri.com). For a special night out, head over to 84 High street (84 High Street, Westerly. 596-7871, www.84highstreet.com), where the Leaning Chimney Smoked Porter was featured with a deconstructed s’more at a recent beer dinner.

A Sweet Sip
The newest entry into Rhode Island-grown wines
Jack and maureen leyden are sitting in Adirondack chairs in front of a bonfire on an 100-acre farm in West Greenwich. They open up their newest wine, which was bottled nearly six months ago. Looking across the farm that has been in their family for three generations, they see the potential in this wine. Traditionally a Christmas tree farm, the Leydens started to grow strawberries and blueberries in 2009, and shortly thereafter began making small batches of berry wine. Later, while on a jaunt to Florida, they discovered wines made with fruit essence, and their path became clear. They decided to make fruit essence wines, which are sweet, crisp, light and very drinkable, coming in at 9% alcohol content. The Apple Jack Russell is a white wine infused with fresh green apple essence. During a tasting, this variety is served with dried fresh McIntosh or Cortland apple slices that can either be dunked or simply eaten. Other fruit essence varieties include Golden Sangria, a red wine with orange essence that is not overly sweet; Samson’s Wildberry, a red wine blended with strong pomegranate notes and more subtle blueberry, blackberry, strawberry and raspberry; Romeo’s Passion Fruit, a rosé style, light, fruity wine perfect for dessert with notes of pineapple, strawberry, and passion fruit; and Lazy Watermelon, a blush wine with essence of fresh watermelon. The newest creations are the just-released (in April) wine varieties made from 100% Rhode Island grapes and not fruit
oriented. The new varieties also share extremely drinkable qualities (12-13% alcohol) that are surprisingly light. Even Samson’s Merlot, their most full-bodied, blended red wine, retained the light quality that characterizes this vineyard. That being said, it would still pair perfectly with a steak due to its extended aging in oak barrels with underlying notes of raspberry and blackberry. The most surprising wine is Jack’s White Merlot, consisting of Samson’s Merlot blended with a white grape. The result is a zingy, fruity, not too sweet creation whose flavors are not overbearing but slowly develop as you imbibe. Other new varieties include Romeo’s Red, a dry blended table wine that is light, bright and subtly sweet; Sunny’s Grigio, a pinot grigio highlighted with fresh apple and herbal aromas; and Cleo’s Blanc, a sauvignon blanc, semi-dry, wonderfully mango flavored wine. These wines are available for purchase at Leyden Farm by the glass (tastings must be scheduled in advance) or by the bottle. While you’re there, catch live music every Saturday and Sunday until Columbus Day weekend from 1-4pm, where you can relax on the outdoor patio overlooking the farm in one of their Adirondack chairs or picnic tables. For a complete experience, pair tastings ($10 for a five wine tasting) with cheese platters ($8 - $12), which contain seasonal fruits, nuts and crackers. Head down to Leyden Farm to taste the fruits of their labor. 160 Plain Meeting House Road, West Greenwich. 392-1133, www.leydenfarm.com.

New and fabulous beach bags and coller totes are in! The original location, 26 Brown Street, Wickford, has been at various times the state police garage, an A&P Grocery, a shoe store and a lingerie shop. In 1980, Jim Graham bought the building to open his second Wickford Village shop and named it JW Graham. It began as a lifestyle furniture store but soon transformed into an American handcraft gift shop. Jim would travel to craft fairs where he would meet potters, glass blowers and wood workers. Various craftspeople would also pull up to the shop with vans full of their craft for sale. In 1987, Jim’s wife Emma took over JW Graham when he passed. Ten years later Emma’s son, Palmer Beebe, moved back to Rhode Island from New Orleans to buy the store from her. His offbeat style became evident in his merchandise purchasing while staying true to representing the American craftsman. He and his wife, Julie, grew the business until it outgrew the JW Graham space. When a great retail space right across the street became available, it seemed only natural for a second store to be born. JW Graham was “split into two” and Yes! Gallery was created in the new location, 17 Brown Street. Yes! Gallery now showcases the unusual and inspiring handcrafted gifts and home décor lines that JW Graham had been known for. Customers have described it as uplifting, relaxing, even museum-like. JW Graham is still the home of irresistible jewelry and accessories. It is known for featuring jewelry from trendy to obscure. Palmer and Julie enjoy being on the cutting edge of the next hottest fashions in jewelry and at the same time remain dedicated to offering unusual handcrafted work. While they’ve become a destination for larger lines such as Pandora, Alex and Ani and John Medeiros, our customers love to explore their customizable lines such as Heather Moore Jewelry and Stacking Mother’s Rings and can find numerous one-of-a-kind pieces. The atmosphere of JW Graham is fun and funky, yet familiar. Both stores have been able to expand their lines immensely and each have become shopping destinations in their own right. They continue their mission to bring to customers unusual gifts, jewelry and home décor made almost exclusively in America. They strive to create a fun, laid-back, inspiring, shopping atmosphere. JW Graham and Yes! are proud of what they represent: fun people enjoying fun things - employees and customers alike!

Dance, Dance A party workout gets you moving
Illustration: Karli Hendrickson
My sister had been buzzing about Zumba for a few weeks. She found a class near her work, found a few willing co-workers, and proclaimed that it was the most fun she’d had in months. Now, my sister is a special kind. She’s naturally thin. Annoyingly thin. Eats-anything-shewants-and-never-exercises thin. So when she mentioned that she started a new workout, I immediately knew I had to step up my game. I checked out the program calendar on the Ocean State Health and Fitness website and came across a Zumba class that was conveniently scheduled at 5:45pm on Thursday. I have to exercise right after work or the excuses get the best of me. I guess you can say I’m also a special kind. When I got to the gym, I was relieved to find a casual atmosphere. The music wasn’t too loud, the employees at the front desk were welcoming, and the members nodded at me in solidarity. “Comfort is one of our top priorities,” said Debbie Chennisi, who opened Ocean State Health and Fitness, along with her husband Michael, last April. “There is no intimidation factor here,” added Michael. “We consider ourselves a family-oriented community gym.” In addition to the 30 group classes they offer each week – like spin, kickboxing and yoga – the center also has personal trainers and a certified dietician on hand to assist members. I walked into the classroom and found a few women chatting and stretching. There were six other women there, another thing I was thankful for. I hadn’t taken a group exercise class in over five years so I was a little worried about keeping up. After a few introductions, including with Kara the instructor, I blurted out that I was a Zumba rookie. “It’s so much fun and you’ll pick it up quickly,” said one of them. As they lined up in what seemed to be their go-to spots in the room, I wasn’t so sure. Then the music started. The first song? “Hot, Hot, Hot.”

If you’re also a newbie, what you need to know about Zumba is that it’s all dancing. As in the samba, mambo, salsa and meringue. It’s been around nationally for 10 years and locally for a few. The music is Latin and hip-hop inspired, and it’s super high energy (as in dancing to “Hot, Hot, Hot” two times in a row, just for fun, energy). By the last few choruses of the encore, I was beginning to get the moves… sort of. The thing is, the other women were in their own cha-cha happy place and having too much fun to notice my missteps. So I just went with the flow, nailing some of the steps and completely messing up others. The hits kept on rolling (“Do You Love Me,” from Dirty Dancing, Usher’s “DJ’s Got Us Falling in Love,” a Marc Anthony song) and so did I. The hour flew by. I guess I was too busy shaking my moneymaker to keep track of time. A few of the women came over to me at the end, encouraging me to come to the Saturday class. I can see why Zumba has such a cult following. As much as you get sweaty with all the shimmying, it doesn’t really feel like exercise. It’s just my kind of fitness – you know, the special kind. 5600 Post Road (Benny’s plaza), East Greenwich; 886-4700, www.oceanstatehealthandfitness.vpweb.com May 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

The statistics show that
most women are wearing the wrong size bra. Let’s face it, it is definitely easier to just walk into a store and leave as quickly as possible with the one that we think fits the best. This tendency may be partially out of pure convenience, but it’s also due to lack of knowledge in realizing what a well-fitting bra actually feels like when you put it on. Well, now you can kiss these excuses goodbye because Wendy Radin and her East Greenwich lingerie boutique A Fitting Experience can make the process of searching for the perfect undergarment a painless one. Located in the Benny’s plaza off of Post Road, the boutique that specializes in fine lingerie and bra fittings for every body type may look small, but it is certainly not hard to miss. The vibrant purple door and large windows make for a very inviting atmosphere. Upon entering, you could feel overwhelmed by the amount of options in the shop, but Wendy and all her helpful expertise quickly change that. After a proper fitting, you can choose from brands like Anita, Chantelle, Le Mystere, Natori and Wacoal. Wendy says that she realizes that a lot of women are wearing the wrong size bra, so the fittings are mainly what she focuses on. She opened her shop in 2008 when she felt that there was a need for a place for women to come
and have a proper fitting in a comfortable environment with personal service and attention. In addition, Wendy is also known for her specialty in mastectomy fittings. Wendy originally started A Fitting Experience as an in-home service for women who have had breast cancer. She loves to give women a chance to feel like their pre-mastectomy selves again while most importantly giving their selfconfidence an enormous boost. A wide selection of post-surgery bras and prostheses are available. Although these fittings are a large part of the “fitting experience,” the boutique also offers a selection of undergarments for both special occasion and everyday. The store is the place for bridal or prom needs and carries the newly beloved Spanx products. With the high demand that is out for what many call a must have in a wardrobe, Spanx are in full supply here with an entire section to choose from. A Fitting Experience is the perfect place for women to tend to the necessities that they may not pay enough attention to, and to find something that will make you feel special no matter what. Wendy’s motto says it best: “Love your body, love yourself. Accept yourself the way you are and do not be so hard on yourself – no one is perfect.” 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich. 398-2639, www.rifittingexperience.com

Kiel James Patrick
Describe Kiel James Patrick, your line of bracelets and accessories, in three words. Gentlemen, New England pirate, golden treasure. I’m intrigued… and immediately reminded of the ocean. Do you sail? I can, and often do. I’ve always found it best to make friends with someone who owns a boat.
Photography: Amy Amerantes
How’d you get started? Going to an all boys prep school demands you stick to a strict dress code. After one year of the same blue blazers and khakis, I needed a change. I decided to finally read my school’s handbook and found out the dress code was less strict than my classmates and I had realized. The rules stated you were to wear a button down shirt, “appropriate” dress pants, a necktie, dress shoes and a blazer. So, you interpreted that how? Images flashed in my mind of Grandpa Henry taking me to the country club as a kid and me marveling at the men who had the audacity to rock brilliant pastel seersucker, bright madras, florals and conversational motif ties… all in the same outfit. Rummaging through my grandpa’s cedar closet, I found blazers that were truly “blazing” and pants that Rodney
Dangerfield in Caddy Shack would have been proud of. How did everyone at your school react? I showed up to class and was a sensation. Thrift stores and friends’ grandparents’ closets were my next victims to raid. Soon enough I was wheeling and dealing clothes out of the trunk of my Jeep. Eventually, the school cracked down on the dress code and I was left with a very vibrant but useless wardrobe. What did you do with all that seersucker? I decided to start chopping up the ties, motif belts and plaid blazers and stitching them up into bracelets to wear under my uniform. Classmates went nuts for them and the rest is history. Where are your items made and sold? Our products are 100% made in Rhode Island and Fall River. We source all materials locally. They’re sold at about 200plus resort-style boutiques in the U.S. Globally, we’re expanding to stores in Japan, Europe and South Korea. What’s next for you? I plan on building a pirate ship and finally leaving Rhode Island for some adventures at sea with my crew. Available locally at New England Invitations in East Greenwich and Basketcase in Wakefield. www.kieljamespatrick.com

SAND CASTLE: the Morrises went with an upsidedown layout to maximize the ociean views
Coastal Redesign “My wife was introduced to Narragansett by a friend and she fell love in love with it,” explains Barry Morris. After Colleen told Barry about the enchanting seaside town, the two thought long and hard about buying a second house there. Close enough to their home base in Connecticut but far enough to feel away from it all, the idea was equally as enchanting as it was daunting. Not about to make such a considerable investment without doing their due diligence, the Morris family set out to explore coastal towns from Groton Long Point, overlooking Long Island Sound, to the waterfront neighborhoods in Middletown. “We looked at every beach community around and we ended up exactly where we started,” says Barry. Peppered with charming coastal enclaves throughout, the family was tasked with zeroing in on the perfect Narragansett neighborhood for their second home escape. After exploring myriad options, the decision was clear: Sand Hill Cove. The couple found a weatherbeaten, 882-square-foot cottage with two bedrooms and one bath perched on the dunes overlooking the sea; where 48 SO RHODE ISLAND | May 2012
others saw flaws, the Morrises saw potential. They turned to Davitt Design Build in West Kingston and principal Matt Davitt to spearhead their ambitious project. “They came to us because we’re an architectural building firm,” explains Davitt. “We specialize in helping our clients through the coastal management maze… to keep projects on time and on budget.” The maze, as oceanfront homeowners can tell you, can be more like a gauntlet, but having built eight homes on the same street, Davitt was well versed in balancing the permit and environmental requirements. It was evident that the existing home wasn’t maximizing the million-dollar views. According to Matt, Barry was able to stand on the roof and see Block Island and the sea for miles. The two decided that an “upside down” home design, where the kitchen, master bedroom and central living areas were on the top floor, would be best. Due to restrictions in location, Davitt wasn’t allowed to tear down the existing home and start fresh. Instead, he and the firm’s architect needed to create a solution that took advantage of the existing space while making the home a
completely reinvented abode. “We sat down, explained our wishes, our hopes, our likes and our dislikes, and of course it was a fortune,” says Barry, “but Matt broke it down.” The firm, he said, took their wish list and worked with the couple to keep their main goals for the home intact while devising budget-friendly alternatives in other spaces. In addition to the upside down design, the couple needed parking (as cars are not permitted to park on Sand Hill Cove Road) and plenty of it. They also wanted the design to include a lot of glass as if to frame the extraordinary surroundings on both sides of the home (the “back” overlooks protected marshlands, Point Judith Pond and the Galilee Bird Sanctuary). Another must-have was ample space to entertain. “We wanted a place where the whole family, and lots of friends, could come and come frequently,” explains Barry. Oh, and they were making all of these ambitious plans in late 2010, hoping to be moved in and ready to enjoy peak season in Narragansett the following summer. “They needed someone who could make that happen and not compromise the function and design of
the house,” says Davitt. Davitt broke ground in January 2010, and so began the adventure. The home was already permitted for a three-bedroom septic, which the family and Davitt decided was best to work around. Being the first house they had custom built, the Morrises faced decisions they never thought could be so plentiful and daunting. “The number of decisions…” Barry trails off. “Every little thing was like five or six decisions.” Everything from the positioning of light switches (and if you want dimmer, manual or remote control), to wall color, to tile, all needed to be chosen. Barry says Davitt made things more manageable by breaking the projects down a few at a time so as not to overwhelm the couple. “When you have a good team… we got through it,” says Barry with a sense of accomplishment. The project soon became a family affair. Colleen had friends who had taken on new home design, so she sought advice from those with experience. “She had plenty of help, but at the end of the day, she picked 75% of the stuff in the house, all the colors for the walls, so much. Everything she picked was great

Gain Experience Make Connections Have Fun! with me,” says Barry. Their son also pitched in. “My son is a musician, so he has the creative thing going – I’m an analytic!” Barry says with a laugh. His son, he said, could walk into a store and decisively choose light fixtures, tiles, faucets and more without hesitation, and the piece would fit seamlessly into the home design. “He’s definitely talented,” says Barry. Between the family and Davitt, the finish line was well within sight for the anticipated summer completion date. “Collaborative doesn’t begin to describe the effort,” says Barry. “Everybody had a hand in it.” “Our whole process is very hands on with the client, they are part of the team,” agrees Davitt. “It always is a collaboration to create the dream.” By July 4, just six months later, the family
was popping the cork on the champagne and toasting their new home. Since then, they’ve had upwards of 25 guests at one time enjoy the fruits of their labor (with no shortage of sleeping bags on the floor). “I had come across a picture in a magazine of a beach house, and showed it to Matt,” Barry says, recalling the beginning of their journey together. “I said, ‘I wanted it to feel like this.’ He absolutely captured that.” Looking back on the whole experience, he says, “It was really quite amazing.”

Sweet Competition South County bakers take top honors at Cupcake Madness Rhode Islanders are simply mad for cupcakes. Close to 2,000 cupcake aficionados turned out for this year’s Cupcake Madness, held in the Pier Ballroom of the Village Inn in Narragansett – twice as many attendees as last year’s event. This is a statewide competition, drawing bakers from many towns. In a head-to-head food challenge, the contestants were asked to bake three different cupcakes – a Dr. Seuss cupcake, a lucky lemon-lime cupcake and a Hawaiian sky cupcake. A panel of expert judges from Johnson & Wales University declared Patticakes of Wakefield to have made the best cupcake in Rhode Island. Coming in second place was Cap’n Jack’s of Wakefield and Coventry Cupcake Company was third. The best vegan cupcake was the banana peanut butter cupcake created by Stephanie’s Sweet Treats of Coventry. The best frosting cupcake award went to Decadent Designs of Smithfield. The best signature cupcake was made by Cupcake Charlie’s of Newport. The best historic landmark cupcake was from Fatulli’s Gourmet Bakery of Middletown. Fatulli’s also won in the best gluten-free cupcake category. The Grinnell Inn in Narragansett was the bakery with the highest number of social media “raving fans.” In the Little Chef division, Tyler Pereira of Narragansett took first place with his raspberry cupcakes and second place with cannoli cupcakes. Gracie Duffy of Narragansett came in third with her chocolate sea salt. The event was sponsored by the Friends of Hazard Castle, which has a number of events planned for the coming months – a grill master weekend, a burger challenge and a coffee and cookie challenge, to name just a few. For details on these events and a complete list of Cupcake Madness winners, visit www.friendsofhazardcastle.org. MAY BREAKFASTS It’s time again for the unique Rhode Island tradition of May breakfasts. On May 1, which is May Day – often on the first Saturday in May – these spring breakfasts are held in church halls, fire stations, community centers and grange halls – a tradition that dates
Stephanie’s Sweet Treats
back to 1867 when the first May breakfast was held. The quintessential May breakfast of modern times is held every year at the Oaklawn Community Baptist Church, 229 Wilbur Avenue in Cranston. The menu includes scrambled eggs, ham, corn bread, clam cakes and homemade apple pie, all served family style. May baskets and homemade fudge are also sold. Another popular May breakfast takes place at the Norwood Baptist Church, 48 Budlong Avenue in Warwick. From 7-10am on May 5, they’ll be serving eggs to order, ham, bacon, home fries, baked beans, cereal, muffins, pies and rolls. Their May baskets will feature fudge and fresh flowers. What made you choose to open a BBQ food truck? I have always wanted my own restaurant and have also always been a lover of barbecue. Unfortunately, the high start-up costs associated with a full-blown restaurant were quite prohibitive. The truck offers an opportunity that is more cost friendly but, most importantly, allows me to bring food to the masses. I named the business after my older brother who has taught me so much over the years. Where can we look for your truck? Our truck can be found in the Narragansett and South Kingstown areas. While the truck does go to many of the same spots on a weekly basis, the best way to find where we are is to check the Eddie’s BBQ website or follow us on Facebook (Eddie’s BBQ) or Twitter (@EddiesBBQ). What item on your menu are you best known for? We’re most known for our Pulled Pork. The Smoked Pork Ribs and Homemade Chili are close seconds. Are these your favorite items as well? My personal favorites are the chili and our Brisket Tacos. I love the chili because it is meatier than most chilis. The Brisket Tacos, well, they’re just awesome. My wife and 20-monthold daughter, however, cannot get enough of the ribs or pulled pork. As a family, we typically enjoy our
favorite BBQ items at least once a week. For me, I eat my food easily three times a week. What about individuals with more limiting food preferences? We do understand that not all who want great BBQ are meat eaters. So yes, Eddie’s BBQ does have some fish and vegetarian options. We offer Fish Tacos, Shrimp Tacos, Tofu, and Eggplant. Each gets a dose of our signature BBQ rub, and the Tofu and Eggplant also come drizzled with our delicious Avocado Chipotle Ranch Dressing. We hear that you are participating in an upcoming food truck event. Tell us more. With the help of the town and the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce, Eddie’s BBQ and three other local food trucks will be participating in a weekly event called Food Truck Nights at the Beach (pending final approval by the Town Council). These food truck nights will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6-10pm in the Narragansett Town Beach north parking lot starting on May 23 and running through August 29. The other food trucks involved in this event are Pizza by Fire, Shukin’ Truck and Roxy’s Lobster. Steven McLaughlin owns Eddie’s BBQ along with his wife Diana, who functions as general manager. 499-9337, www.eddiesbbqri.com.

A Tasteful Makeover A beloved Galilee restaurant gets a new look Our unusually warm spring
Photography: Hilary Block
had me craving chowder and clam cakes earlier than usual this year. I like my chowder clear, and free of any cream or tomato additions – which is considered by many to be the official and authentic chowder of Rhode Island. And I like my clam cakes to be golden brown, studded with chopped quahogs, with an almost fluffy interior. Family, friends and even total strangers are always asking me where to find the very best chowder and clam cakes. I feel it is my duty to research this issue quite thoroughly, and this year I got off to an early start with a visit to the “new” George’s of Galilee. It started out many years ago as George’s Lunch, with four tables and seating for six at the counter. George (last name now forgotten) sold his business to Norman and Edna Durfee in 1948. In 1969, the restaurant was handed over to their son Richard, who turned George’s into a Rhode Island landmark. He doubled its size, expanded the menu and added decks and function rooms. Today, George’s is the largest waterfront restaurant in the state, seating about 500 people and overlooking the busy channel between Galilee and Jerusalem. The current owner is seeing to it that the family restaurant is keeping up with the times. Over the past winter, they closed briefly for extensive renovations. A spiffy new George’s has emerged, with a dining room that still has plenty of nautical charm. A fieldstone fireplace occupies the rear wall. Outside is a new stone patio with a fire pit that is sure to be a popular gathering spot this sum-

mer. Upstairs, the Harbor View Room remains the same with its big bar and tables that spill out onto the open-air deck in warm weather. With a view of fishing boats and the Block Island Ferry crossing the channel, George’s just can’t be beat. Fortunately, the food is as pleasing as that view. With drinks from the lively bar, we started off with the Baked Stuffed Quahogs (two for $5.99), the ideal appetizer to share while you study the large menu. These stuffies are quite good, with a light consistency and zesty flavor. A dash of hot sauce made them even more enjoyable. On this initial visit, we could not resist the Friday Fish Fest, providing all-youcan-eat of George’s famous clam cakes, chowder and fish and chips ($12.99). This is offered every Friday from 3-6pm. If you’re feeling guilty about all that fried food, you can ask for roasted cod or baked stuffed flounder ($14.99). At either price, the Fish Fest is a bargain. If you were to order the clam cakes, chowder and fish and chips individually, it would cost you $4.99 for a half dozen clam cakes, $4.89 for a small bowl of chowder, and $12.99 for the fish and chips. I had every intention of asking for second helpings of everything, but this is hearty fare. Only those with the hugest appetites will be able to eat more than what is served initially. I dove into the basket of clam cakes, tearing one open and taking a bite even though it was too hot to enjoy. Forcing myself to slow down, I sprinkled a little salt on the steaming cakes and waited to take that second bite. Ah, a golden pillow of airy dough with nuggets of chewy
Grilled Lobster
quahogs here and there. It’s times like these that I can’t imagine ever moving away from our beloved Ocean State. I am one of those clear chowder fanatics who would never, ever put anything but quahogs into a chowder. I’m always delighted when I see that a restaurant offers a choice in chowders – clear, white or red. The clear chowder I had at George’s was just about perfect, with plenty of finely chopped clams and just the right amount of potatoes cooked until tender to the bite. After three clam cakes, I had to set them aside, but I did manage to request another bowl of chowder – it was that good. I just had to have more. But this was all a prelude to the magnificent fish and chips placed before us. I had three pieces of fish (our personable waiter, Conor, said it was haddock) over more French fries than I could ever eat. The fish was prepared traditionally in George’s Old English batter. Each piece was golden brown, moist and tender. A small ramekin of pleasing coleslaw served as a palate cleanser in between bites of fried food. We ended up bringing home some of our fish, which made for excellent fried fish sandwiches the next day. On our second visit to George’s, we tried more of what the extensive menu has to offer (although it is mostly seafood). For starters, we tried the Lemongrass Calamari ($10.99) and the Seafood Skins ($10.49). The squid, battered and fried until golden brown, had a sweet lemony flavor. The potato skins were quite filling, topped with
small scallops, whole shrimp, lobster sauce and mozzarella. For the main course, Brian thoroughly enjoyed the Smokey Mountain Tenderloin Tips ($15.79), comprising plenty of tender steak tips flavored with hickory and mesquite, served with mashed potatoes on the side. The only boring component was the vegetable medley of steamed summer squash and zucchini. The Jamaican Jerk Shrimp Bowl ($14.99) consisted of plump shrimp tossed in jerk seasoning with stir-fried vegetables, mostly broccoli, over rice. If you somehow have enough appetite left for dessert, by all means order the Key Lime Pie ($5.99) and the Carrot Cake Cupcake ($3). The pie is a mouthful of summer – sweet and tart at the same time. The cupcake is made by Erica, a member of the waitstaff. It is simply one of the very best carrot cakes I’ve ever had. a Haunted Tour May 5: Rhode Island is one of the oldest states in the country, and with that honor comes a long history of folklore, legend, myths… and mysteries. Some say Smith’s Castle is haunted. May 5 & 6 In 2005, a housemother at an African orphanage, the Kampala Children’s Centre, gathered a handful of children and began singing about their life and faith. Within a year, there was enough talent to form a chorus. The rescue children of Destiny Africa Children’s Choir are visiting Rhode Island this month, to spread healing, joy and hope to a desperate world through song. The choir will be at the Warwick Mall and then at AS220 on May 5 and in East Greenwich on May 6 at the United Methodist Church. Proceeds will benefit the Kampala Children’s Center, whose mission is to rescue young African children from war zones and provide them with a safe, loving home and excellent training and education for the future. Just the right Note spring into song with the Jamestown Community Chorus Even after the mildest of winters, something about spring makes you want to burst into song. Revel in the feeling by attending the Jamestown Community Chorus’ upcoming concert. Titled “Isn’t It Romantic?” and billed as “selections from (mostly) Brahms and Broadway,” the program promises lovely music, soaring voices and a light and lively spirit suited to the season. Music director B.J. Whitehouse delights in eclectic musical programming. Since assuming the position in ’89, he has conducted close to 50 concerts for the group, ranging from the most serious of Classical compositions to the zaniest of Gilbert & Sullivan scores. But he considers 19th century German composer Johannes Brahms to be his all-time favorite. Riffing off the idea of the Romantic period, an era more about emotion and expression than romance per se, Whitehouse’s set list for the spring concert couples Brahms’ work with 20th and 21st century love songs by the likes of Rodgers & Hart and Sting. Whitehouse loves his role in the chorus, especially “pushing people a little further musically than they thought they could go.” He notes that the group doesn’t shy away from difficult works, and the spring show features a number of them. He also recognizes the commitment involved for the 50-odd choral members, all volunteers, to rehearse each Monday night from January to May in preparation. So he tries to make meetings fun and not to waste anyone’s time. He says, “As soon as bring my hands down at our first rehearsal, I start listening to what the blend is, what the sound is, and what I can do.” The program for “Isn’t It Romantic?” gives poetry lovers reason to coo, too. Benjamin Britten’s “Evening Primrose” sets to music a poem by 18th century English poet John Clare. William Sterndale Bennett

gives flight to the tender words of Christopher Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.” And the group sings two different composers’ takes on James Agee’s poem, “Sure on the Shining Night.” Chorus president Dorothy Strang reports, “As a choral singer, I have been taught that rhythm comes first. Then the words. Finally, the notes, which will take care of themselves. That may be a bit of hyperbole but, in this JCC concert, getting the words right is essential and delightful.” Jessica Wilson, a reference librarian in Peace Dale, sings first soprano and serves as the group’s publicity director. She joined the chorus in ’06 after attending a concert and noticing, as she says folks often do, how much fun the singers appeared to be having. With a welcoming atmosphere, diversity of experience levels, and music that “stretches us,” Wilson found the chorus even more enjoyable than expected. She also discovered that a strong sense of fellowship accompanies each concert. She explains, “We’ve built something, we’ve produced it, and that creates a bond between people.” The spring concert gives audience members a chance to chime in, with
a sing-along of old standards from the American songbook. And if you love the experience, consider joining – the chorus is open to everyone who attends the first rehearsal of the season. “I think that this type of activity brings out the best in people, whether you’re going to be in the audience or in the chorus,” director Whitehouse declares. As for the rewards involved, he laughs. “You ever sung Brahms? We get a bunch of people together and we get to sing Brahms. I mean, c’mon. What gets better than that?”

Mariko Toyama
a Colorful Life a watercolor artist makes the ordinary extraordinary Mariko Toyama’s mother never wanted her to be an artist, and it would take a long slog through sociology classes in college, a stint working in Japan’s foreign ministry, and ultimately a move to the United States for her to realize her dream of becoming a painter. Mariko’s artistic eye developed at a young age: growing up in Kobe, Japan, she frequently brought home art awards from school and teachers told her parents she had great potential. Attending art school in Japan was out of the question, so in high school Mariko directed her restless energy toward another passion: fencing. After college, Mariko married Hitoshi Toyama, moving with him first to Tokyo and then to Rhode Island. That included the chance to unpack her brushes and rekindle her love of painting. Once her children were old enough for school, Mariko began taking classes through the South County Art Association (SCAA), honing her skills in her preferred medium, watercolor, and becoming an expert at mixing paint. “I like watercolor because with oil you have to wait for it to dry, and I don’t like to paint in layers,” she explains. “I like my work to be transparent.” Soon, Mariko’s colorful, frame-filling still lifes of simple subjects like tomatoes, onions, chili peppers and gumballs began winning awards at juried art shows held by the SCAA and the Wickford Art Association. Mariko describes her style as largely

Western, not Asian, pointing out differences in how the light plays on a basket of apples, creating subtle changes in the color from one piece of fruit to the next. “Japanese art is very flat, not shaded or round,” she explains. “I try to make it look natural.” Her paintings, the winners still adorned with ribbons, fill the kitchen, dining room and living room of the Toyamas’ home in Narragansett. Mariko is outwardly demure and humble (“I don’t like this,” she says, pointing to an award-winning painting of scoops of ice cream that’s nonetheless prominently displayed on one wall), but it’s clear that the creative fire of that frustrated Kobe schoolgirl still burns brightly inside. Her eyes alive with laughter, Mariko describes her work as “bold and dynamic,” and likens the satisfaction she gets from painting to relaxing with a good, strong drink. After a decade of winning local art awards, Mariko’s next goal is to have her work recognized by the venerable Rhode Island Watercolor Society, where she’s a member. She also has transitioned from student to teacher, leading watercolor classes at the SCAA in the spring, summer and fall. Mariko has sold paintings for up to $350 each, but even those transactions are more about pride than commerce. “When someone hangs my painting in their living room or dining room, it makes me feel very happy,” she says. www. southcountyart.org.

Fiesta Food In honor of Cinco de Mayo, we did a bunch of tequila shots. Just kidding. This month we tested salsa and chips from four establishments that put the F in fiesta.
Mermaid Café
Now, if only we could find something cold to wash these deepfried delicacies down with.
With house-made chips that are paper thin, nicely crisp and salted to perfection, Mermaid Café had us at hello. Their pico de gallo – or salsa fresca – featured lots of pepper and lots of onion, with an overall fresh, simple and clean taste. 19 Margin Street, Westerly. www.mermaidcaferi.com
El Fuego Mexican Grill Trini’s Tacos There was no doubt that Trini’s chips were homemade. They are everything you’d want a tortilla chip to be – crisp and simple. Their delicious salsa is pureed and quite unique. We’re guessing they may have used sweet tomatoes. 7669 Post Road, North Kingstown. www.trinistacos.com

These chips were fried to a golden brown and very light on the salt. They were crispy and strong enough to hold a big scoop of salsa. Speaking of which, El Fuego makes theirs very chunky with big pieces of tomato and hints of cumin and cilantro. Yum. 344 Main Street, Wakefield. www.elfuegomexicangrill.com
Pancho O’Malley’s With bright yellow corn chips that were the least fried-looking of the bunch, Pancho served us a generous helping of hearty, bright-red salsa that was full of tomatoes. It tasted slightly sweet and mild. Just right. 140 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 782-2290.
