KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER Providing you the classic salon experience since 1977
in 1985 opened our second location in East Greenwich. We expanded in East Greenwich in 1996 and then again in 2010 and became the Best of Rhode Island salon and spa that you still enjoy today 36 years later.
All Hair by Kenneth Cote
1980s
But through all the changing styles and fashions, the ups and downs of the economy, six American presidents, the invention of the internet, etc. one thing has remained consistent: our focus on you. Our salon culture is still based on the core principles of teamwork, ongoing education, customer service and outstanding services at reasonable prices. Your salon experience is classic.
1990s
Celebrating 36 Years: 1977-2013 I’m Kenneth Cote. I’m a professional stylist, salon owner for 36 years and a father. In 1977, I was a busy stylist trained in the relatively new Vidal Sassoon technique of precision hair cutting. The Dorothy Hamill wedge and Farrah Fawcett flip were the rage. When I looked around most salons at that time were still operating as 1950s beauty shops… not very uptodate with the latest trends… not very professional. I decided I wanted to create a different type of salon culture for myself and for other stylists. I wanted to create a new salon experience for Rhode Island clients. So I decided to open my first salon on North Main Street in Providence above a poodle grooming parlor called Puppy Luv! It was a labor of love. I had a mission. I wanted to enhance the professionalism of the salon industry in 1970s Rhode Island and provide fellow salon professionals a work environment that focused on camaraderie, teamwork and ongoing education. And guess what… it worked! I became a guest artist for Redken Labs and had the honor of traveling the world teaching American hairstyling techniques. We did fashion shows and models and politicians and television personalities.. we even styled the hair of the first female President of Ireland! As our reputation for providing uncompromised outstanding services grew, we moved to Hope Street and
2000s So visit us today for the first time, or the hundredth time, and experience the culture that helped shape the salon industry in Rhode Island. We were the first and the original and I would argue that we’re still the best. My staff and I will prove it to you each time you visit us so call us soon. Visit our website for special offers and thank you for being part of this amazing journey these past 36 years.

Letters Take a Bite Out of Summer Forget about the weather. Summer truly starts when you’ve had your first clam cakes and chowder of the season. The food is quintessentially ours, a beloved Rhode Island tradition for centuries now. Every local has his or her opinion on what makes for the best kind of clam cake, and where to get it. And every out-of-towner wants to know where they should get theirs. This month, we delve into this quintessentially summer food - measuring, chopping
and dunking our way through South County’s fried seafood offerings. It was tough work, but someone had to do it. Read on to get a taste of what’s cooking.

Aqua at the Providence Marriott
Once the warm weather sets in, why would you ever want to leave South County? While most of the time we would agree with that sentiment, we think our sister magazine, Providence Monthly, offers up a pretty compelling reason to make a trip to the city this month. As the heat bears down, they’re having The Coolest Party Ever to celebrate their annual Superlatives Issue. On Tuesday,
July 9, you can join PM along with the movers, shakers and (yes) cheerleaders featured in their cover story at Aqua, the swanky poolside lounge at the Providence Marriott. You can sip cocktails in style, make your own s’more to roast over a fire and even see some synchronized swimming. Tickets are only $15 in advance, so get yours now at www. providenceonline.com.

he could build a better fishing rod than he could buy in the store, Captain Howard Reed never looked back. He’s been fishing since he was six-years-old and it has taught him a thing or two. One is that fishing is all about confidence. “If you have confidence in what you’re using, it will help you catch fish,” he says. Another thing he’s learned is that people come in all shapes and sizes and so should their fishing rods. “Having a rod you’re comfortable with will also help you catch fish,” he adds. Chances are a factory-made rod won’t really fit your body and fishing style as well as it should. For the past two years, Captain Reed has been at the helm of Narrow River Rods, building custom fishing rods and doing expert rod repairs out of his Narragansett store, Galilee Bait & Tackle. “I design a rod around the person using it,” he explains. He’ll start with a conversation about their fishing habits: what they fish for, how they fish, what kind of reel they want to use, what kind of baits they use and if they fish from the shore or a boat. His observation of their technique is a big part of the design process. “I size up how they want to hold the rod and how they are going to cast it. That way when they get it, it feels the way they want it to feel.” When you’re out on the water, the comfort of a custom-fitted rod translates into longer casts and better hook sets. Captain Reed often takes customers outside to the parking lot and watches them cast. He then marks on the rod exactly where they put their hands. “In a factory-made rod,” he explains, “someone else decides where to put everything. But I can make the rod really fit the person.” For one person, he might make eight-inch handles. For another, the handles might be 30 inches. It all depends on the individual. Each custom rod takes about two to three weeks from start to finish. The price tag begins around $150 and grows depending on how elaborate the customer wants it to be and what kind of materials they choose. “You can get fishing guides made out of titanium, for example,” says Captain Reed, “so things like that can drive the price up.” He has made rods with all kinds of decorative details, from fun colors to elaborate feather inlay patterns. “I’ve made pink rods for guys buying for their daughters,” he says. “Anything you want, you can get on a rod.” Some final advice from the Captain: “Be persistent. Try different things. Don’t be pigeonholed into doing what everyone else is doing. Venture beyond the crowds and you’ll find fish.” 2 State Street, Narragansett. 783-1719, www.galileebandt.com. -Bethany Vaccaro
ALL ABOARD
An Epic Sail around the Ocean State David Gracer and Trip Wolfskehl are two Rhode Island sailors who believe that adventure doesn’t have to be far away from home, but can be found right here in Rhode Island. The passionate men will have their own adventure this month where they will sail to over 40 of the Ocean State’s islands and step foot on each of them. They are calling this project Operation Landfall. “Sometimes it’s good to have an ambitious goal, and to give that goal an impressive name,” says Gracer. There is more to this great adventure than just a fun name and memories that will last a lifetime. Touched by the tragedy in Newtown, CT this past December, the local sailors have teamed up with non-profit organization Save the Bay to raise money during their sail, giving children (from Central Falls to Barrington) the opportunity to explore and become educated on the Bay. “It’s a healing experience for children to get away from electronics and the hustle and bustle of daily life,” Gracer mentions. Gracer and Wolfskehl will be out to sea for an entire month, starting their journey at East Island, landing in Block Island about halfway through, finishing at Twin Island and reaching each destination in between. They are even thinking about adding a fun twist: “The idea of eating something from each island is a good idea. I suspect we’ll eat whatever we can find on each island,” explains Gracer. The sailors hope to gain a following of donors who can pledge a certain amount for each island reached. No donation is too big or too small. One Hundred Years and Growing Strong Founded in 1913 by a group of local Rhode Island apple orchardists, the Rhode Island Fruit Growers Association is celebrating their 100th anniversary this summer with the 2013 Farm Scavenger Hunt. The scavenger hunt will consist of visiting dozens of local farms and talking to the farmers to guess which picture clue represents their farm. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet your local farmers and delve into Rhode Island’s fast-growing agricultural industry. This year, there are 28 farms participating in the state-wide scavenger hunt, including Wakefield’s Carpenters Farm, Langworthy Farm Winery in Westerly and Windmist Farm in Jamestown. It’s a great excuse to take a day off, explore some of Rhode Island’s quaint, rural back roads and indulge in fresh, local produce, all while working toward a grand prize. To participate, just stop by any of the participating farms to pick up a copy of the farm map and clues. LITTLE RHODY ON THE BIG SCREEN
Block Island hosts a treasure hunt for glass orbs cleverly placed throughout the island
Human nature, fame, deadly viruses and of course, bloodthirsty monsters; just a few of the themes you’ll find at the double feature premiere of North Kingstown based filmmakers Brian Bouyea and Shawn W. Manchester. On July 18, at 7pm, don’t miss the premiere of Famous by Brian Bouyea and The Next Step by Shawn W. Manchester, showing at Showcase Cinemas in Warwick. After the showing of the films, there will be a Q&A with the cast, followed by an after party, which will include a bar and buffet. Each of the films being shown were filmed entirely in Rhode Island. Famous follows the story of Julia Turner (Meg Perry) as she showcases just how far some people will go for the promise of fame. The Next Step features two mercenaries, Hank (Shawn W. Manchester) and Jack (Micheal Dubec) who are hired to contain a virus outbreak by exterminating anyone who has been infected but uncover the morbid truth about the virus in the process. The premiere will be a great place to network with other members of the local film community, and a good opportunity to show your support for local filmmakers. 1200 Quaker Lane, Warwick. –Adam Baffoni
Calling All Treasure Hunters Combining the childish glee of hide-and-seek, the wonderment of artistic creativity and the adventurous spirit of educational discovery, Block Island is hosting its 2013 Glass Float Project. It’s a uniquely Rhode Island way of doing things: this initiative seeks to use public art installations to encourage people of all ages to explore Block Island. This clever bit of tourism involves over 400 glass floats being placed all around the tiny island, 13 of which will be distinctly colored orbs representing 2013. One is even made out of gold leaf; all will be dated, numbered and stamped with the shape of Block Island on them. Started in June, the competition continues indefinitely until all 400 are found. All of these glass creations are the artistic vision of Eben Horton, noted as “one of the country’s most versatile glassmakers.” Hidden along Block Island’s iconic beaches, above the high tide marks and on the Greenway Trails (a foot from either side), everyone is encouraged to participate in the search, but are asked to only take one glass float per person. So what are you doing? Get searching! www.blockislandinfo.com/glass-float-project. –Sarah Frazier

Summer In the park with the new Ocean State Waves baseball team By Keith Andrade
Whether you’re a baseball fanatic in search of the next Dustin Pedroia or a family in search of a fun night out, there’ll be something for everyone when the Ocean State Waves take the diamond at South Kingstown’s Old Mountain Field this summer. The Waves are the newest expansion team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), a prestigious, 20-year-old summer league that showcases some of the country’s brightest college stars and Major League prospects. The Waves are led by Head Coach Phil Davidson, a well-known name in the Rhode Island baseball community. After an All-State pitching career at Toll Gate High School, Davidson went on to play at North Carolina State University and the Kansas City Royals’ minor league organization. He returned to Rhode Island and founded the RI Rebels, the area’s elite high school travel program that has sent over 100 players to college baseball rosters in its short four-year existence. According to Davidson, it was the success of the Rebels’ program that spurred the Waves: “We found that the players who had gone on to play in college were now looking to play at a high level in the summer. (Waves team owner) Jeff Sweenor and I talked about it one day and really just

thought about how nice it would be to provide that. We explored a couple of different league and field options. The NECBL gives our players the chance to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the country,
Head Coach Phil Davidson
and in a very fan-friendly and comfortable, community-based setting at Old Mountain Field.” The Waves roster includes prospects from all over the country, but fans will recognize several local
names. One of these natives is Mike Sherburne, an outfielder from North Kingstown High School who played at CCRI and is headed to URI in the fall. Although it’s a summer league, Sherburne describes the stakes: “You want to be a little loose and have fun, but playing in this league is a big deal and you have to stay focused. It’s the best players of any college level all put into one place – it’s the future of baseball. Major League scouts are watching, so you have to perform. It’s a huge commitment… it’s a job without getting paid.” Although the players are not yet major leaguers, their skills are exceptional. “You will see a ton of pitchers (throwing) in the upper 80s, low 90s (mph). They may not be as polished, but there definitely are some power arms in the league this year,” says Davidson. The biggest difference between NECBL and the majors actually happens off the field: “These players are living in homes in the community, constantly interacting with the fans, and are much more accessible than their Major League counterparts. It is a very special relationship that summer host families and fans have with the players. The players really do become part of the families, for much longer than just the summer.” While Sherburne may not need a

host family, he echoes the sentiment on community: “Living and playing in Rhode Island is great - getting recognized by younger kids, people coming up to me in grocery stores. Knowing that a lot of people are watching makes it fun.” The primary purpose of summer leagues like NECBL is to give budding prospects another outlet to play and develop, challenge themselves against high-level competition, and be seen by pro scouts. But as Coach Davidson describes, “there’s a fine line between exposure and competitiveness” that will ensure fans
get their money’s worth. “Our first responsibility is to return these players to their colleges and universities healthy. Second, we would like to send them back to their school as better players than when they came to us. We will look to get everyone playing time, especially early in the season, but make no mistake, we are going to play to win ballgames. I think that the respect for the game, and playing it the right way are most important. If the players want to impress anyone, playing the game the way it is supposed to be played is the best way to do that.” The 44-game season (22 home games) began in June and will continue through August, culminating in playoffs and a championship. Ticket prices are a bargain, ranging from $4 for adults to $1 for children 12 and under. Fans will find just as much going on outside the park as in it – rock climbing walls, mobile art studios and many other children’s activities designed to make it a fulfilling family night out. A host of information can be found on oceanstatewaves.com. You can follow the team on Facebook and Twitter, and be on the lookout for Splash, the team mascot, all throughout South County. Enjoy America’s pastime and make the boys of summer a part of your summer.

remember the first time I dunked a clam cake into a cup of rich, creamy chowder. I ripped off a piece from the doughy and crispy cake, still hot from the fryer. the steam, escaping from the center, made its way to my nose. I was intoxicated. Without hesitation, I dunked. I went for it. I was rewarded with the heavenly combination of salty, savory and just a tiny bit of sweetness, from the well-preserved clams held hostage in the cake. this moment, along with many others, has not only taken place with family and friends, but usually next to the ocean, at a picnic table, with a salty breeze coming onshore. Whether I am at the beach all day or making a special trip to South county from the city, I continue to have that craving. Whatever the reason, sometimes this is the only treat I want on a summer day. but where did chowder come from? Who thought to put these ingredients together in the first place? most seafaring countries have had some version of fish chowder, the predecessor of clam chowder for centuries. Did you know that the Pilgrims were completely uninterested in eating clams when they first arrived in new england? It took some time, but they eventually started eating them and boy am I glad they did. We’ve been able to enjoy the fruits, or should I say clams, of their labor ever since. capitalizing on that labor is the beloved and oldest clam shack in Rhode Island, aunt carrie’s. opened in 1920, this labor of love is born of the hard

work and ingenuity of, you guessed it, aunt carrie. her family frequented narragansett in the summer and recognized that it was lacking a place to get a cold drink. What started as a lemonade stand shortly grew into a counter that served freshly made chowder and has evolved into what we know and love today – the aunt carrie’s you bring your family and friends to that overlooks narragansett bay. but let’s say you want to get your hands a little dirty and make this stuff from scratch. Sounds like you need to go clamming. If you are a Rhode Island resident, you don’t need a license to

engage in recreational shellfishing. It is a basic right of every Rhode Islander, and possibly even a requirement, to go to a tidal flat at low tide, harvest a couple of quahogs and cook them up any way you choose, preferably into chowder. Render some pork fat, dice up some potatoes and onions , don’t add corn, chop up some clams, add in the chicken broth and toss in some fresh fennel and thyme, don’t forget the cream and voila. Welcome to a world of awesome. and let’s not forget about the clam cake. this infamous, truly Rhode Island offering is an enigma to those outside
of the ocean State, save perhaps in a few scattered parts of new england. It falls in the same category as bubblers, coffee milk and cabinets. Some will put it into the category of a fritter but, if I may be so bold, I think it should remain in its own category. I don’t even care how this delicious treat came to be, I am just so thankful that it exists. and if you want to try making them on your own, kenyon’s Grist mill has a mix where all you have to do is add chopped clams and clam broth; it doesn’t get any easier than that. So whether you’re digging them up, cooking it yourself or visiting one of the many clam shacks that sprinkle the coastline, summer won’t be complete until you have had at least one, two or (let’s be honest) more like six occasions where chowder and clam cakes are the star of the show. It just isn’t summer until I take that first bite that I crave year after year. -Grace Lentini
Here’s a fun tidbit of quahog information: the scientific name for the quahog is Mercenaria mercenaria. Mercenaria is Latin for money, which is appropriate seeing that quahog shells were used as currency in the 17th century.

very true Rhode Islander has an opinion on where to get the best clam cakes and chowder, and it isn’t truly summer until you’ve enjoyed a picnic table lunch of them. here’s the skinny on South county’s clam shacks. make it your mission to visit all of them this season and decide for yourself which is best. the first name in seafood in South county is carrie. Well, more specifically, aunt carrie. the current iteration of the narragansett restaurant was built in 1920. besides classic fried seafood, Aunt Carrie’s offers up honest, new england fare like their Rhode Island Shore Dinner. their famous desserts, like fruit pies and the not beautiful but incredibly delicious Indian Pudding, are made in house every day. 1240 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 783-7930, www.auntcarriesri.com across the street from aunt carrie’s is the other first name in local seafood. Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House will leave you waiting in line on any given sunny summer day, but it’s so worth the wait, especially if you’re doing it in your bathing suit, fresh from the beach. In addition to clam cakes, red and white chowder and fried seafood, Iggy’s serves delicious burgers (and has homemade soda to wash it down with). If you don’t leave room for a namesake doughboy after your meal, well really, you’ve missed the whole point. 889 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick. 737-9459. 1157 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 783-5608, www.iggysdoughboys.com Steps off narragansett town beach is Monahan’s Clam Shack by the Sea. the line is a bit shorter at this place, but that’s because the turnover tends to be just a little bit faster. and it certainly doesn’t mean that their thick chowder and crispy clam cakes are any less delicious. order at the window and then

It regularly makes appearances at farmer’s markets and around town for lunch and dinner service. the best place to keep track of Roxy’s location is on twitter. Monahan’s: 190 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 782-2524, www.monahansri.com Roxy’s: @RoxysLobster Galilee might win the award for the most clam shacks in closest proximity to each other (that is, if there were such an award, which would be kind of weird). George’s of Galilee and Champlin’s, on either side of Salty brine State beach, have been serving fresh-from-the-boat seafood for generations. champlin’s is more of a picnic table atmosphere, and directly overlooks the path of the block Island Ferry. (If you’re not waving to the excited island-bound passengers as you eat your lobster roll, you’re not in the spirit of the season.) George’s has a full sit-down restaurant with live music and a rooftop patio overlooking the beach, as well as a to-go window. Further complicating your choice is the fact that the snack shack at Salty brine, Salty’s Landing, serves clam cakes and chowder, and you don’t actually need to put on shoes to get them. Just steps away is a newer addition to Galilee’s seafood offerings: Buster Krab’s. this “burger shack and beach bar” serves all three kinds of chowder, in addition to clam cakes and “the world’s most ginormous whole belly clam manwich.” across the street, Clam Jammers is a sit-down restaurant with all the traditional new england seafood fare, as well as a food truck that makes appearances all over southern Rhode Island and Providence. I don’t get sick of that. It’s one of the few things I still eat that I make!” the recipe is meant to be done by feel, for home cooks who know when their meal is done simply by smelling it or hearing it. as Julia child once said, “cooking is like love; it should be entered into with abandon or not at all.” She also said, “cooking well doesn’t mean cooking fancy.” case in point: John’s new england clam chowder recipe.

Sweat them for 5-10 minutes. • add in enough clam juice to cover all the vegetables (and then some), diced red bliss potatoes, black pepper and bay leaves. Let that simmer for 20 minutes or until potatoes are cooked through – you can lightly mash some potatoes against the side of the pot to release the starch and give it a thicker consistency. • In a separate pan, make a light roux of flour and butter. • add heavy cream, milk or half and half to the clam juice, depending on your preference. Let that warm through, then add the roux. Simmer until it is hot and at the desired thickness. • once the desired thickness is achieved, add in some fresh chopped parsley and dill, salt (to taste) and clams (best way is to use fresh clams right out of the shell).

The once one-story home now boasts nearly panoramic views
On Teal Pond It’s been said that Rhode Island has a certain gravitational pull; that there’s something about the nation’s smallest state that simply draws people in. Doug Shapiro and Lou Chrostowski might agree that they too couldn’t resist the Ocean State’s siren song. The two were based in Newton, MA when they bought a simple beach cottage on Teal Pond in Wakefield. Modest and unassuming, it had everything they needed to make the humble abode their weekend retreat. Like many bungalow buyers, Doug and Lou always knew the home had heaps of potential. “There was a vision for the future, although we were here 11 years before we did any renovations,” concedes Doug. Adds Lou, “When we bought the property, we knew this would eventually be where we would retire.” Their mutual love for the ocean, the beach and living in the moment, surrounded by beauty, were the reasons why. Though retirement was in their longterm plans, it came a little sooner than they originally thought. Lou was working in Massachusetts for insurance brokerage Marsh & McLennan on 9/11 when
40 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2013
the company lost 358 employees and consultants in the devastating attacks. By September 12, 2001, Lou was in New York helping the company and families as recovery began. Though he says he and Doug always knew they’d each retire at an early age, the heartbreak of 9/11 really puts things in perspective. “We knew we wanted to live life,” Lou says simply. The two conspired to make a radical, life altering decision in 2007. “We decided we would both leave our jobs… and move down here on a permanent basis,” Doug explains. “It all happened very quickly and spontaneously. We weren’t looking for a change.” Perched on one of South County’s many small salt ponds, Doug describes the 1950s beach house as “very simple, very small, [and] maybe 1,200 square feet all together.” For the couple’s getaways, it was the perfect little place, but in order to call it home, there would need to be some changes. “It worked fine as a weekend and vacation home,” Lou trails off, but for deeper roots to be planted, it needed a re-invention. “It wasn’t nearly big enough to live
in permanently, so we wanted to enlarge it, and obviously living on water, you want to build up and capture the views,” Doug says. The couple turned to Nancy E. Leslie, AIA , of Wakefield-based Leslie Architects. A Rhode Island School of Design graduate with more than 20 years experience in conceiving not only new residences and historic projects, Nancy Leslie also tackles renovations, which the little house on Teal Pond needed. The original home featured one-floor living with a breezeway that led out to what looked like a one-car garage. “But we heard it was where the original homeowner, a fisherman, would clean his fish,” says Doug. Not long after moving there, Doug and Lou furnished the space into a “tiny little guest room.” “They really had to take it one step at a time,” explains Nancy Leslie. “They could only do so much per year.” To comply with South Kingstown building codes and regulations, the project was organized, as Leslie explains, into three phases over three years until the entire scope of the project was realized in 2008. As
with any home on the water in Rhode Island or within its coastal floodplain, any modifications needed to be approved by the state’s Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC). It’s a process that can be as tedious as it is rewarding. That’s why when Doug and Lou brought their ideas to Leslie, the trio collaborated on a design that maintained the original footprint but completely reinvented the layout and flow. “Having lived here all those years in the original house, we knew what we basically wanted the layout to be,” says Lou. “I kept ripping out pages from a number of house magazines; my favorite being Coastal Living.” The pages found their way into a perpetually-expanding folder organized by room, colors, textiles, furnishings and projects like outdoor showers and kitchens. “So when we went to Nancy, we had ideas.” But their ideas were more than just abstruse musings. The two had conjured up a layout that they felt would maximize the space and cater to their lifestyle. For example, as the two still do some work from home, they wanted two spacious

offices that would not only be efficient spaces, but they also wanted the layout to celebrate their tranquil and striking surroundings. Similarly, Doug and Lou weren’t afraid to adopt an unconventional design. In other words, it was less about return on investment and more about finding their bliss. In the main house, the ground-level floor includes a kitchen (with original knotty pine detailing juxtaposed by modern countertops and appliances) and sun-drenched dining and living areas. The second floor is dedicated to a spacious master suite with an equally spacious and spa-like master bath. A third level, which serves as Lou’s office,
is reminiscent of a turret suite, with panoramic water-views that extend as far as Block Island on a clear day. With nearly 55 windows that seem to erase the line between inside and out, the home evokes a much larger feel then it actually offers. “There are cathedral ceilings throughout, so even though we don’t have enormous rooms, it feels that way,” explains Doug, who may have just discovered a second calling throughout the process. “I personally did all of the applications, dealt with DEM myself, [and] went to the town when we needed a number of dimensional variances,” he says. “I did all that. I researched all of the regulations. I’m actually quite proud of it.” Doug
laughs as he notes the reaction of builder Chris Nelson of Nelson Bros. Construction about his ambitious endeavor. “Chris scratches his head, not knowing how I did it,” Doug says. “We joke to this day that I should consult on working within the regulations.” “I never quite had a client finagle what he did,” adds Nancy Leslie. “He came up with some different approaches [and] ended up developing this really great relationship with the building inspector.” How did he do it? Nancy speculates: “A combination of luck and charm.” The guest suite, located across the breezeway and above the two-car garage, affords coveted privacy for all
those folks when homeowners seem to reacquaint with this time of year when they have a place by the sea. Seasoned entertainers, Doug and Lou are happy to have them. “We enjoy the peace and tranquility of the location and sharing it with our family and friends, which is why we did the separate guest quarters,” says Lou. “We love to spoil our guests.” It seems that for Doug and Lou, life on Teal Pond is rather golden.

The Lost Art of the Shave A classic barbershop treatment in East Greenwich

A while back I
was sent to a new men-only, man-centric man cave of a barbershop where I was to write manly things about my man-sperience. When I arrived, it was sort of like the barbershop version of Hooters: bubbly, young girls in clingy tank tops tended to my needs, there was a TV tuned to ESPN at every chair, and I had a cold can of Bud Light in my hand. The whole experience was, well… loud. Not just in the sense of volume of the sound (which was true, too) but the volume of the atmosphere. It all felt forced and overwrought – like some fist-pumping, over-testosteroned Maxim magazine editor’s vision of the good life. So it was with some trepidation that I approached my next man-signment: to visit Roosters Men’s Grooming Center in East Greenwich. I prepared myself for cock puns and “Thrift Shop” blasting in the background. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to find quiet music, lots of dark wood and a generally soothing atmosphere at Roosters. There was even a history of the barber pole framed on the wall. My barber, Steven, greeted me warmly and we got down to business. “This is a lost art,” he told me before beginning my Signature 7 Step Facial Shave, a good, old fashioned hot towel and straight razor (and a few others steps) treatment. Already this was far more Esquire than Maxim. Before he went to work on my beard and mustache – which were to be groomed, not shaved – Steven asked me how much shaping he wanted me to do and offered suggestions. We agreed to keep everything neat and more closely follow my jawline. As he began methodically brushing and trimming, he told me a bit about his background. A former instructor at a school for barbers and hair stylists, he was presented with the opportunity to open the first Roosters location in Rhode Island. (It’s a national chain.) It was difficult to find stylists with the skill set of a classic barber, so he began cherrypicking students from the school and training them in the “lost art.” Throughout the process, Steven was informative and chatty without being a distraction. Though soft-spoken and

calm, he operated with the expertise and steady assurance of a doctor. If he had told me he was going to use that straight razor to open me up for heart surgery, I think I would have trusted his judgment. After the brushing, trimming and sculpting, he laid back the chair and prepared me for the centerpiece of the treatment: the straight razor shave. He lathered my neck with shave cream below the jaw line, and dabbed a little high on my cheeks above my beard as well. Then he applied not one, but a succession of two hot towels with another lather in between to soften the hair and open my pores. Once the second towel came off, it was right to work with the straight razor, which Steven wields with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel. Once the shave was finished, Steven applied the cold towel to close the pores again, followed by some aftershave and moisturizing cream, both of which were soothing and redolent of fruit and natural goodness. Then he trimmed my, at times, unwieldy eyebrows – not before asking my permission, mind you – and gave the back of my neck a line-up (which counts as a separate treatment apart from the Signature Shave). Finally, Steven proudly
showed off the results of his work. There was no denying it: my beard was perfectly groomed and styled, my skin felt soft, a job well done. But as good as it looked, the feel was the best part. I felt both relaxed and rejuvenated at the same time. For the better part of an hour I was able to just kick back in a quiet place and cede control to a trained expert. Now I felt refreshed and – dare I say it – manly. It was as if I had taken part in a great tradition of gentlemanliness, like drinking whiskey while reading Hemingway in a leather armchair or smoking a cigar while playing bocce. The Signature 7 Step Facial Shave is not inexpensive ($26), but it’s a worthwhile treat, a quick escape from the demands of the day. Trust me, guys, you’ll look great – but you’ll feel even better.

Clean, Green Living Earth friendly services meet worldly goods in Wyoming When Mama Earth co-owners Jennifer and Melissa opened their premium cloth diaper service in 2010 (now a separate business from the green, dry cleaning), they knew immediately that they would eventually branch out and embrace other environmentally-friendly opportunities. Their goal: to enhance the lives of others while being kind to the planet, because they saw how effective using natural detergents and energy efficient equipment could be. Seeing what a positive impact their diaper service alone had made, the two delved into researching effective green alternatives to dry cleaning and discovered that there are very few earth-friendly dry cleaners not only in Rhode Island but across the country. Their passion for sustainable practices that are cutting edge, safe and non-toxic lead to the opening of their eco-friendly dry cleaning business and store in Wyoming in January, easily accessible off of Route 138. They are considered a green dry cleaner because they do not use the common solvent used in a standard dry cleaning business: perchloroethylene (or perc, for short). Perc is a synthetic, volatile organic compound (VOC) that can pose health risks to humans and animals and is a potential threat to the environment. “As parents and business owners, we want to contribute in any small way to keep the earth and all the people living on this planet as healthy as possible,” shares an exuberant Jen. Their attitude and earth-friendly slogan sums up their passion for their new business: “At Mama Earth, our business is small, but we dream big.” Mama Earth customers are greeted by a storefront boasting vibrant eggplant-colored walls along with delicately draped imported fabrics from one of their excursions to Bali or Bangkok. An intimate seating arrangement complete with a cozy fireplace and easy-listening music is also part of the atmosphere where it’s not

For nearly 40 years, Zero Wampum has reigned as one of South County’s coolest gift shops. This family run business is the go-to place for eclectic gifts, unique jewelry and locally-themed (and made!) treasures. We got the scoop on the store from Sue Snow, who’s been there from the beginning. Zero Wampum has been around for nearly 40 years. How has the store evolved? We started out with a small gift store on Wampum Road in Narragansett (hence the name). The Richmond family, Gerald and his wife Amy, along with his brother Kenneth, opened the store in 1973. I came along in 1974 and Amy and I have taken turns managing the store over the years. The family has an uncanny knack for knowing what to feature and when, and for keeping up with the trends. It’s important for us to get to know our customers and what they’re looking for.

Summertime is typically chock full of parties and events. What gifts do you recommend for the host who has everything? The GurglePot fish pitcher is a great conversation starter. It gurgles when you pour from it and makes a delightful item for the summer table. We have great prints including the Point Judith Lighthouse, a South County collage and nautical prints that are perfect for a summer cottage. We carry other local gifts including a photo book by Rhode Islander Stephanie Izzo, Rhode Island playing cards, signs that have the latitude and longitude of New England hot spots, lacquered trays and coasters featuring nautical scenes and signs with whimsical sayings such as “On ‘Gansett Time.” What are some of the style trends you’re seeing for summer? Anchors are definitely a trend for the summer, especially in bags, scarves and clothing. Lilly Pulitzer insulated cooler bags and colorful tumblers are a favorite and perfect for the beach. Turquoise and silver jewelry remains a summer staple. Another special item is a hair bracelet called Simbi. Simbi is a Haitian water spirit and these bands are made in Haiti with proceeds being used to provide Haitians with clean water. This season we’re seeing an interest in

What advice do you have for those of who’ve been wearing the same pieces forever? Experiment a little! If you are used to post earrings, try a pair of dangles. Try new stones, different colors, let your hair down a bit and be daring. Group bracelets together or go with a bigger, wider style than you normally would. It’s amazing how a different pair of earrings, necklace or bracelet will change your look and your outlook. What products are classics for you? One of our oldest and best lines is Crabtree & Evelyn. The quality and packaging are superb and the scents are wonderful. Some of our customers have had the same favorite soap and lotion for years and others continually try new products. Eileen Fisher clothing is a staple. It’s a simple, yet classic style, made from quality materials with gorgeous colors. Another oldie but goodie is Vera Bradley. We’ve been carrying the
line for about a decade and it’s loved by all ages. Vera’s colors come out seasonally, so there’s always something new and refreshing. What local products do you carry? Rebecca Leonard’s Fuschia Blooms jewelry line is made right in Providence. She uses sterling, brass, stones and vintage beads to produce lovely earrings and necklaces with colors, textures and styles that are simply beautiful. She recycles old findings and stones into new designs. We carry The Fisherman’s Table cookbook by Laura Blackwell, which features recipes by local fishermen. We like carrying this book because South County is truly a seafood paradise. We have anchor sea salt soap, seahorse seaweed soap and floating soap from Kalastyle, a Rhode Island company. How challenging is it to run a family business? In almost 40 years we’ve had many generations of family working here. Of course, we’ve had challenges along the way but our ties remain strong. We even have employees that are the children of former employees. We’re grateful to have them remain a part of our family. We don’t always agree on all the products we carry but our differences make the selection so unique.

Off the Beaten Path An out-of-the-way restaurant offers delicious surprises We ordered BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos, Buffalo Wings, Fish Tacos and a small Tomato, Basil and Fresh Mozzarella Pizza. That may not sound like a ton as I said, but believe me, these were some very big plates, and also all very good. First up, the BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos ($12) made up of fresh corn tortilla chips topped with pulled pork, red onions, olives, jalapeño peppers and monterey jack cheese. I realize the description says fresh corn tortilla chips, but when the nachos were put down in front of us it was still a very pleasant surprise to find they fried their own tortilla chips at The Bike Stop Café. It was a nice touch and the chips were nicely crisp and not at all oily. The nachos came with three perfect little sides of guacamole, sour cream and salsa, though we barely touched the sides other than to taste them as there was so much good food on the chips themselves. The pulled pork was very well cooked, not overly sauced, so you could really taste the pork. There was a good amount of cheese, but not too heavy, and a lot of jalapeños and olives, almost too many jalapeños, but then in my younger days I don’t think I would have ever thought there were too many jalapeños on anything. Next up, Buffalo Wings ($9) – a

large plate of ten wings with the usual celery and carrot sticks and blue cheese dressing. These were perfectly fine wings with some good
spicy flavor to them; if I was looking for a quiet bar to sit at with a beer and some wings near the beach, this would certainly be a good option. On to the Fish Tacos ($11), lightly battered fish topped with mango salsa and charred cabbage, served with a side of homemade slaw and fresh tortilla chips and salsa. These are offered as either hard or soft tortilla tacos and, since you get two tacos with the dish, we decided to try one of each. The hard shell was as good a crisp chip as the other in-house fried tortilla chips. The soft tortilla has a good flavor and may have been the better choice for these fish tacos since the fish was very lightly battered. However, as is often the case with taste, my friend and I were split on which tortilla was the better taco delivery tool. The fish was indeed light, as well as flaky and delicious, and the mango salsa tasted great, though perhaps a touch on the sweet side for my preferences. Last, but not least was the Tomato,

The Bike Stop Café in Narragansett turned out to be a case of appearances being deceiving. Located on a slightly tucked away street two blocks from the ocean, with a very heavy-on-the-bikes décor, my first reaction was “typical touristy spot.” My gut said the décor was a gimmick and a first glance at the menu – laden with buffalo wings, nachos and pizzas – read like typical shore bar food. But then I noticed the behemoth of a wood oven almost hidden to the side of the bar (if you could conceal such a thing), and a deeper reading of the menu revealed items that showed some creative stretching of that bar food theme. So let’s dig right in, because my friend and I ordered a ton of food. We started off with a couple of Angry Orchard Crisp Apple hard ciders. The Bike Stop Café has a beer and wine license with a small, but enjoyable selection. The hard cider really hit the spot on a crazy hot day. The menu is broken down into appetizers, salads, sandwiches, tacos, entreés and wood-fired pizza – of which you can choose from around ten specialty pizzas or put together your own. The pizzas are all made with organic flour and they offer a gluten-free crust option.

Tomato, Basil and Fresh Mozzarella Pizza
Basil and Fresh Mozzarella Pizza ($10.50). Anyone who follows me on social media, even casually, knows I’m pretty picky about pizza, and while I wouldn’t usually order a bar pie, there was this beautiful oven in The Bike Stop Café, and they offered such a wide selection of pizzas, I figured it was an okay place to try one. I’m happy to say this was good pizza. The dough was flavorful and there was a nice crispness to it. The toppings were fresh and it was seasoned well. Some of the other specialty pizzas read on the menu as a bit crazily overloaded with toppings, but if the quality of toppings is consistent with the rest of the food, and it’s as carefully prepared as the dishes we ate, they could be worth a try. Overall, my friend and I walked
out of The Bike Stop Café having had a very enjoyable meal with a lot of well-prepared food at a very good price. It may not be right on the beaten Narragansett path, but for me that’s part of the welcoming charm, especially during the summer. Though I can’t imagine during any time of year The Bike Stop Café would be a secret to anyone looking for a good meal.

Nana’s Gelato has been serving South County since 1985. Meet the owner, Dianne Mann, to find out why she is so passionate about ice cream and gelato.
First Quality Fabrics, Wallpapers, Trims In Stock and Samples
First off, who is Nana? The original owner in 1985 was a nana. I am waiting for my kids to bring me grandchildren, but it may be a while since they just graduated college. But I can picture them all standing on milk crates scooping for me some day.

Are you a family-run operation? Yes, we are family-run. My kids were both in high school when I purchased Nana’s. My daughter Crissi scooped every summer and my son Jeff was my inventory guy. They live elsewhere now, but when they come home I definitely put them to work. Who better to respond to our customers who want to know what’s in Cowabunga Crunch and how many grams of fat is in our gelato? Which came first, ice cream or gelato? Nana’s has been serving ice cream cones across from Narragansett Town Beach since it opened. We discovered the fabulous flavor of gelato, the Italian version of ice cream, during a trip to Italy and began serving 16 flavors to our customers. Gelato has a smooth, silky texture and intense flavor, with only 1-4 grams of fat.

What do your customers seem to prefer? Gelato is outpacing ice cream now. It has incredible flavor with less calories. Our fruit flavors are fat free. And with a homemade waffle cone dipped in chocolate and covered in sprinkles, it’s just the best! Let’s talk about flavors. What are your most popular? Do they keep changing or do people like to see old favorites? “Nana’s Kiss” is our signature flavor - chocolate gelato with Snickers, Kit Kats and Hershey’s kisses. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is our most

popular ice cream flavor every season. Cookie Monster and Pink Bubble Gum are a favorite for kids. Our Monster Mash with malted milk balls, M&M’s and cookie pieces is an old favorite. We just made a new flavor Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel, which is outstanding. We always listen to our customers requests and have added more dairy-free flavors and glutenfree products. What is it about the Nana’s experience that people take away with them? There’s lots to like about Nana’s in Narragansett. It’s a comfortable place, where memories are made and remembered, year after year. It’s the smell of our delicious waffle cones hitting you as you walk in the door; the comfy black leather couch where you can eat your treats; being able to walk in barefoot and sandy right off the beach and our new candy bar right next door has walls and walls of nostalgic candy.
Describe your perfect Narragansett summer day? Eighty degrees, no humidity, not a cloud in the sky and a line of sandy fans out the door and around the corner. What do you do in the off-season? During the off-season I play more tennis and visit my kids in New York and Florida. We expanded Nana’s by adding two new locations this past season, so I didn’t have a lot of down time. I also spend more time in the off-season serving a few bridal shows. Last year we served 39 weddings; brides are excited to add our gelato station to their venue.

Cheers to the Summer Liven up your fun with local spirits Summertime is finally here. ‘Tis the season for cookouts, beach parties and bonfires. Looking for a great local product to serve at your next shindig? Look no further than the line of handcrafted spirits produced in the Peace Dale Mill by the Sons of Liberty Spirits Company. Sons of Liberty was founded by Narragansett native and resident, Michael Reppucci. He left a successful job at an investment firm with a quest to create the first ever great American single malt whiskey. Mike’s cousin, Chris Guillette, shared his passion, and they joined forces. First, the pair took a seminar in distillation at Cornell University. Then, the cousins teamed up with Master Distiller David Pickerell (a 14-year employee of Maker’s Mark) to refine the craft of creating spirits. Uprising American Whiskey is the company’s signature product and is crafted using stout beer. Many people don’t realize all whiskey is distilled from beer, but generally it’s from flavorless beer, not a hearty stout. Mike and Chris brew their own stout beer from a malted barley recipe and then double distill it to 130-140 proof in a Vendome Copper Still. It’s then aged in American oak barrels and finished with oak staves. Mike says the resulting product is a “smooth, beer-forward whiskey.” Uprising American Whiskey mixed with North Providence’s Yacht Club Ginger Beer, called a Nor’Easter, makes one heck of a cocktail for a summer party. The Sons of Liberty also have a line of seasonal whiskies, and their summer Hop Flavored Whiskey is a knock out. It is distilled from IPA instead of stout and provides a taste of summer with hints of lemon and grapefruit. Make a Hopped Negroni with Hop Flavored Whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, Aperal and a dash of bitters. Great whiskies aren’t the Sons of Liberty’s only product. Their line of spirits also includes Loyal 9 Vodka, which is filtered 99 times for a “ridiculously smooth taste” and Loyal 9 Mint Cucumber Flavored Vodka, which is made with Rhode Island grown cucumbers and mint. You can buy Sons of Liberty products all around South County. Check out their website www.solspirits.com/where-tobuy, to find where it’s sold near you. You 56 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2013

North Kingstown’s Marne Snyder creates dreamy collages

As you might expect
from a maker of collage, Marne Snyder’s North Kingstown art studio is a mishmash, with knick-knacks and ephemera covering every horizontal surface area other than the floor - a fertile breeding ground of ideas for Snyder’s next project. Out of the chaos, however, springs three-dimensional works of art that are as coherent in execution as they are mysterious in meaning. A grid of toy soldiers doing battle with the dead represented by figures turned backwards or upside down. Figurines of Victorian ladies primly holding their hats are swept along on a background of swirling grey pastels and dusky bird feathers. A small house is ringed by a gilded tiara, which in turn is circled by a nest of twigs, complete with a watchful bird. “I try to leave things open to interpretation,” says Snyder, who adds that she herself is often unclear where a particular collage is going while a piece is in process. “I’m asking people to use their imagination and open up to the work.” Snyder has been using her own imagination to create art since the age of two. Hers was a childhood spent playing with toy bunnies and mice and drawing thousands of pictures of princesses. “It was my way of telling stories,” she says. Her mother, a writer, encouraged Snyder to pursue her passion, even buying her a loom when she expressed interest in weaving. She also drew inspiration from her grandfather’s cousin, a woman ahead of her time who was a painter and poet in the Greenwich Village of the 1920s. Growing up in the Boston area, Snyder attended the artsy Cambridge School of Weston before enrolling in the School of Visual Arts in New York. Art took a back seat to the priorities of raising a family, but Snyder never stopped drawing, and a collage class sparked her interest in creating more

three-dimensional works. A move to Stonington, CT included a stint running a marine store at the Dodson Boat Yard, which she slowly transformed into a shop selling toys, clothing and other nautical gifts (her husband, who ran the boat yard, would eventually have to reopen the marine store elsewhere). Twelve years ago, she decided to rent studio space at the Shady Lea Mills complex in North Kingstown - a sanctuary where she can indulge in an intuitive creative process that she describes as “bliss.” The artist’s goofy side comes through in her selection of materials, including animal figurines, toy soldiers and action figures - usually culled from antique and collectable stores. These are posed on everything from Native American fabrics to LP records. A few have an easily recognizable element, but most feature an element of the fantastical - a camel standing in a living room created from a cigar box and doll house furniture, for example.
A visit to Snyder’s studio reveals a work process in which multiple collages are in the process of taking shape, piece by piece, as inspiration strikes. “I don’t start with a theme or idea,” says Snyder. There are common themes that run through much of her work: “I like people to appreciate the humor in a piece, and I like to create otherworldly places.” Snyder opens her studio to the public during Shady Lea’s annual Christmas sale and recently joined the Hera Gallery in Wakefield, where she’s hoping to stage an installation in the near future.

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2013
We all know that far too familiar storyline - a man settles down with too many women, juggles multiple relationships at a time and takes advantage of overlapping schedules. Sounds like a rom com, doesn’t it? Actually, this storyline dates back to the `60s. Boeing Boeing is a famous French play – if you’ve never heard of it – written by Marc Camoletti that happens to include this same form of comedic, dramatic irony, except a bit more reserved than what we see today. This play was actually so successful in the `60s that it was translated into English, performed countless times and permanently inked in The Guinness Book of World Records in 1991 for its number of performances throughout the world. Camoletti sure did something right. So what makes Boeing Boeing such a must-see? “It has all the classic elements of comedy,” says David Jepson, artistic director of the Granite Theatre in Westerly. “Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd – [the play] has echoes of their types of humor which still hold up today.” And don’t discount the consistent following and positive reactions of this hilarious farce. Humbly residing in Paris – or so it seems – hunky bachelor Bernard has wooed two too many women. And while he can’t wait to get his life started with his future wife – oh, and the other two – unexpected circumstances arise that
knock Bernard’s sneaky plans for a loop. Who would have thought three women from three different countries – Italy, Germany and America – would all arrive at the same place at the same time? C’est la vie! “It’s the high point of the play,” says Jepson, regarding the famous scene where Bernard’s stewardess fiancées find out the truth. “The scene is a riot. I think everybody knows it’s going to happen. It’s a fun, joyous ride to that moment.” After 13 seasons of productions, including a few by Camoletti, the staff at Granite Theatre are dedicating a generous chunk of its summer schedule to bring Boeing Boeing to life in Rhode Island, now showing through July 21. Granite Theatre is what Jepson calls the former Colonial Theatre’s “reincarnation.” Granite Theatre’s founding producer, the late Paul Lynch, sought out Jepson, who was producing in Pawtucket at the time (and has produced over 2,500 performances) and gave birth to the theater in 2000. “Lynch called me to see if I was crazy enough to operate two theaters at one time,” explains Jepson. “I did, for two years, until moving down to Westerly and making the nonprofit Granite Theatre my full-time endeavor.” Jepson’s theater company, The Renaissance City Theatre Inc., has continued to have huge success with the
Granite Theatre, considering itself a community theater as it offers a mix of genres, guaranteeing something for everyone. Holding eight major productions within the span of a year, the Granite Theatre’s activity is compared to that of a regional theater. And with Boeing Boeing as one of these mustsees, we can predict a successful, hilarious summer and perhaps even a lesson – maybe? “The moral is not a very deep message,” Jepson says, laughing, “but I guess the moral would be to be satisfied with one person in your life.” Despite its surface-level morality, Boeing Boeing offers more than a laugh or two. The theater carefully chose the production for many reasons, one including its Tony Award-winning Broadway performance for Best Comedy Revival, so you may just find yourself bringing your date a second time. After all, with over 100 major productions under its belt, there’s no doubt that the Granite Theatre knows how to put on a mind-blowing performance.
