SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2015

You probably already know this, but as Rhode Islanders, we’re spoiled. We have so much that’s great about living here, especially in the summer, and especially in South County. I was having a conversation about this month’s cover story with our managing editor recently, and I said to her, “it’s really about how there’s no better place in the country to live in the summer than Rhode Island.” As soon as I said it, I knew it was true: the beaches are gorgeous, there’s no shortage of places to have cocktails with an ocean view, we’ve got a culturally thriving, nearby city with tons going on this season, we’ve got more festivals and celebrations than you could possibly attend in three short months. But then, there’s the

seafood. If we’re spoiled about any one thing more than anything else, it’s the incredible bounty that comes out of our waters, and our ability to eat fish that comes out of the ocean the same day we’re ordering it. This month, we take a sea to table look at the local seafood industry, from the people catching it to the restaurants most committed to serving local, sustainable catch. Read on, and then go enjoy some of it yourself.

From Our Readers Helping Hand I just wanted to let you know that I received a client call from the article [“Getting it Together,” June 2015] in the June issue of So Rhode Island. Thanks so much! I have received most of my paying clients from your magazine. What a truly amazing publication you have. I have to tell you I am really impressed. Mary T. O’Sullivan, MSOL Encore Executive Coaching

The Dog Days Are Over Park your puppy at this pet paradise If you’re a dog-owner, you definitely know the workweek blues that accompanies leaving your pet behind for your nine to five. Worry no longer though, because a new haven for your lonely pup has recently opened its doors in Warwick. From Mastiffs to Maltese, dogs of all shapes and sizes will feel right at home when you bring them to RI’s only indoor dog park. The 8,000 square foot doggy domicile is a play space big enough to fetch dogs from across the state, and with separate areas for large and small dogs, the Pugs and Papillons won’t have to worry about going toe to toe with a mighty Boxer. After an exciting day of

chasing toys and sniffing compatriots, your weary four-legged friend can look forward to a restful stay at the adjacent Dog Hotel, with a resolute body of staff standing at attention for ondemand belly rubs and cuddling. By now you must be wondering what the name of this canine Arcadia is, and it’s certainly one to remember: BowchikaWowTown. Don’t let their playful name fool you though, as entertainment is only half of their mission. Their dedicated, award-winning staff is there around the clock to give your dog the attention he or she deserves. 450 Pavilion Ave, Warwick. 737.2900, www. bowchikawowtown.com –Jordan LaRose

Artists to the Field

Photography by (Top) Brad Smith

South Kingstown’s newest pop-up art fair Field of Artisans, a weekly popup market situated in southern Rhode Island, celebrates the work of 20 carefully selected vendors every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm this summer. Quite literally a breath of fresh air, we have South Kingstown native Katrina Meehan to thank for this innovative association that’s chock-full of exposure opportunity. A Fashion Merchandising graduate from the University of Rhode Island, Katrina sought a local market similar to those in New York City to sell her own handmade jewelry, paintings and repurposed leather. An identifiable lack of consistent, art-focused merchandising opportunities in Rhode Island inspired the collaborative concept behind Field of Artisans and, with the help of her two sisters Shannon and Natasha, its exciting fruition.

As a platform for ideas where artists and small businesses can sell, network and gain exposure, Field of Artisans creates an environment for painters, chefs, metal smiths and makers of every kind to showcase their work, and encourages patrons to support local talent. Various South Kingstown locations, including Marina Park, Saugatucket Park and Matunuck Town Beach, will host the outdoor, artist-to-artist setting that Katrina believes fosters creative reflection, new perspectives and revolutionary insights. An individual space at Field of Artisans – approximately 10’x10’ – costs $40 per day and welcomes mediums of every kind. In addition, specialized events and possible indoor opportunities promise this handcrafted hub will continue regardless of weather conditions. www.fieldofartisans.com. –Ali McGowan

Something to Bark About Homeless animals aren’t ruffin’ it at Animal Rescue Rhode Island’s new shelter Don’t you ever wish you were your dog? Unconditional love from everyone, no worries besides how to make someone drop forbidden food under the table… yes, it would be great to be your dog, and Animal Rescue Rhode Island’s (ARRI) mission is to make sure every dog (and cat, rabbit, guinea pig, etc.) in Rhode Island is as lucky as yours. This summer has been a big one for this private non-profit organization as they have changed their name from The Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island to Animal Rescue Rhode Island (ARRI) and broadened the scope of their care with their new state-of-the-art shelter that opened this June. This is no ordinary shelter: it has radiant

floor heating, meet-and-greet space for those looking to adopt and even cat “condos.” And the dogs, to be fair, get a canine training “academy” and lots of space to roam outdoors. In contrast, before ARRI took in many of their animals through their Bark n’ Ride program starting in 2011, the nearby Chesterfield County animal shelter was overrun and had a 98% euthanasia rate. Now it is only 5% and ARRI’s shelter, as always, is 0%. With their new shelter and farreaching programs such as humane education and a pet food bank, ARRI’s impact on Rhode Island’s furry friends will only grow from here. 506B Curtis Corner Rd, Peace Dale. 783-7606, www.animalrescueri.org. –Rebecca Bendheim

A United Revival

The United Theatre,

which was a prime destination in Westerly for about half a century, is in the middle of its second season of events since it closed in the 1980s. The theatre’s new ownership, led by Executive Director Simon Holt, is leading a grand renovation that will make the theatre, well, more than just a theatre. In addition to restoring the 336seat main theater, the owners hope to add a 50-seat “storefront” theatre, a third, reconfigurable auditorium and other amenities. The renovation will take several years, Holt said, but when all is complete, he hopes it will help

20 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2015

revitalize the downtown Westerly. “I do think the economic aspect is really a key element to all of this,” Holt said. This summer, the theatre will host an array of live music, stand-up comedy and its Movies in the Park series. There will be some star power too, when Tony Horton, the master behind P90X, hosts a public workout in August. “I think the really amazing thing is not only is he just a big name, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots, and he really understands what we are trying to do in the downtown here,” Holt said. 5 Canal St, Westerly. www.unitedtheatre. org –Jack Nicholson

History in the Vaping Taking the trendy tobacco alternative for a spin Vaping is becoming increasingly common, indoors and out. Finally, curiosity got the better of me, so I stopped by Vapesolutely in North Kingstown to try to get a sense of what it’s all about. A co-worker joined me and we sampled a variety of the 100-plus flavors on hand in Vapesolutely’s comfortable, inviting lounge. Owner Bill Pizzuti and his pleasant staff were happy to answer all of our questions, but for me the big one was, “Why?” “Most people come in to quit smoking,” Bill says, explaining that for his customers, vaping allows them to wean off of nicotine and tobacco in a way that satisfies the physical stimulation of smoking. Bill even urges customers away from the tobacco flavors. Bill doesn’t like the word e-cigarette. For him there’s a clear distinction between smoking tobacco and vaping, and he believes that the sooner people disassociate the two the better. More than anything there’s the fact that none of the products Bill carries contain any more than four ingredients. Compared to the hundred of ingredients in cigarettes that in turn produce thousands of chemicals when burned it’s easy to see why he’s so passionate about breaking the comparison. 1310 Ten Rod Rd, North Kingstown. 2950794, www.vapesolutely.com –Tony Pacitti

Jigger’s Diner

The Blue Plate Diner in Middletown takes

Come to Jigger’s Diner for a slice of Americana and stay for the johnny cakes. If you’ve never had a johnny cake, get your butt down to East Greenwich, plop yourself down at the counter and order a stack. Using Kenyon’s Mill cornmeal, which has four centuries of RI culinary history, these flat cakes perfectly sop up as much real maple syrup as you can pour on them . 145 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-6060, www.jiggersdiner.com

Blue Plate Diner

The Lobster Tail and Claw Benedict at Jigger’s Diner in East Greenwich

This is your classic diner: neon lights, big comfy booths and heaping plates of comfort food, complete with murals like, “Thou shalt sit at the counter.” There’s one twist, though: adult beverages. They’ve got a full bar and even serve up spiked milkshakes, which makes dining here feel more like you’re at a real, bonafide New Jersey diner. 665 W Main Road, Middletown. 848-9500, www. blueplatedinerri.com

The Modern Diner On the US National Register of Historic Places, the Modern Diner is one of two remaining Sterling Streamliner diners (the other is in Salem, MA) and has been a fixture in Pawtucket since 1941. You know what hasn’t been around since 1941? Their wall of daily specials. Although there are plenty of stellar staples like their face-sized pancakes and hash, there’s something special about ordering off menu. And you’ll never know who you’ll rub elbows with, literally. Close quarters’ dining gives you the opportunity to get to know regulars and first time visitors alike. 364 East Avenue, Pawtucket. 726-8390

It’s like a deconstructed version of a traditional pot pie, with chicken, turkey gravy, potatoes, carrots and peas topped with a flaky piece of puff pastry. Ocean to Plate South County’s hyper-fresh seafood industry is a way of life By Eleyna “Nellie” de Goguel Photography by Michael Cevoli Illustrations by Meghan H. Follett

Slice into a succulent summer flounder or crack open a lobster claw; seafood-feasting season is upon us. With Rhode Island’s lengthy coastline and excess of thriving marine habitats, we are a seafoodie’s haven. Oysters, clams, bass, flounder, squid… the Ocean State is so lucky to have a plethora of fresh, locally harvested fish and shellfish to choose from. In recent years, demand for expertly caught and cared for “boat-to-plate” fare has only grown. Whether dining out by the shore or frying up fluke in the comfort of your own kitchen, locals and tourists alike now have so many options when it comes to the water-dwelling creatures they put in their gullets. Our suggestion? If you can, choose the ones sourced in Rhode Island, every time.

Commercial fishing in the Ocean State

is predictably a major industry. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Point Judith in Narragansett ranked 25th (55 million pounds) in the United States in commercial fish landings and 23rd in revenue from fish ($47 million) in 2013. Second-generation fisherman Donald Follett grew up amongst the waters he now scours for marketable seafood. “I started fishing with my dad when I was six and I worked on boats before I got out of high school,” he says. Follett began running his own small vessels at 16 and became captain of his first trawler at 22. He’s fished all over the East Coast, down to the Gulf of Mexico and spent 12 years on the West Coast fishing for King Crab and Cod. “It was Deadliest Catch kind of conditions,” explains Follett. In 2001, he returned to Rhode Island and now works off of Point Judith, where he harvests mass amounts of squid as well as other fishy friends. “Fishing in RI… there are so many great products that are here, all kinds of fish. We are considered a mixed species area in the business,” says Follett. “Most boats make short trips so the fish are unloaded every two or three days, where other places in the market send out boats for eight to nine day trips, so the fish are on ice for that long. The good local restaurants source from Rhode Island because [the product] is twice as fresh, and they want to have the best.”

So Rhode Island

Ocean to Table Guide

Ocean to Market to Fork “Farm to table” dining is undeniably a responsible and conscientious way of purchasing and consuming food. Unfortunately, the idea has been somewhat bastardized as a fleeting trend, or as a luxury for those living in the upper echelons of society. Luckily over the past decade, many chefs, restaurateurs and fishermen in Rhode Island have been fine tuning different systems that not only directly tap into our state’s abundance of seafood in a way that provides consumers with an “ocean to fork” product, but does so with affordability, access and transparency in mind. Captain Richard Cook, founder of The Local Catch – a fishing and processing plant based out of Galilee – is at the forefront of this movement. On any given day Cook and his wife Ann can be seen at one of the many farmer’s markets across the state, selling some of the freshest seafood available to the average consumer. After years as a commercial fisherman, Cook decided to get licensed as a seafood processor and distributor, essentially cutting out the middlemen and the inevitable extra costs that goes along with them. Cook can now catch the fish, process them and get them packaged and ready for market within hours. He can tell you how the product was handled, how it was caught, the time frame of process – everything a consumer might want to know about the fish. Rather than selling to restaurants, The Local Catch focuses on selling straight to those perusing farmer’s market stands for fresh ingredients. The company also offers a Community Supported Fishery (CSF), which acts like a debit system for loyal customers. Buy a half ($144) or full ($288) share and use the credit whenever it is convenient. In South County, find The Local Catch stand at the Coastal Grower’s Market in North Kingstown on Saturdays and at the South County Food Co-op on Fridays. Brown Family Seafood (BFS) is another pioneer when it comes to bringing fresh, quality fish to the end user. While The Local Catch deals directly with consumers, Brown Family Seafood sells their product to restaurants around the state. “We’re a family company,” explains Sam Brown, son of fisherman and founder Chris Brown. “The seafood industry is more complicated than it should be. We get the fish directly from my dad’s boat to the restaurant. There are no middlemen, and our traceability system verifies everything about our products – even tasting notes.” Even though BSF sells to businesses, they do also sell at farmer’s markets, and it’s during these distributor-to-consumer conversations where the Browns see a demand for change in the industry. “At the markets, that’s where people are showing a lot more interest in the quality and history of what they’re buying. I now see soccer moms buying Bluefish and other underutilized local species because they know that it’s fresh, they know where it came from, they can even ask about the boat,” he says. “Because we’ve cut out so many steps in the processing, it’s less expensive than the store, especially when buying something like Scup, which is a high quality protein. Tuna isn’t available all year round, and you can’t catch a Salmon in Rhode Island; we are trying to highlight the ones we catch on a daily basis,” explains Brown.

Captain Donald Follett aboard the F/V Cody

Which Fish are in Season What are some species to look out for while skimming summer restaurant menus? Squid, naturally, is a major mainstay and could arguably be found at almost every restaurant in the state. However, you may not be tuned in to local fish species. Don’t worry, we’ve done the work for you, and they’re listed below. Summer Flounder (Fluke) with its white, flaky meat makes for a delicious dish and can be eaten with the skin on. Flounder is also nutritionally rich and a good low-fat source of B vitamins and niacin.

Striped Bass (Striper, Rockfish) has a stronger flavor than its Black Bass cousin and is a little coarse in texture. Stripers are a source of low-fat protein and selenium. Bluefish (Tailor, Snapper) is a darker species when raw, but when cooked takes on a lighter color. It has a rich, distinct taste (it feeds on Menhaden, a small, oil-rich fish) and its skin is edible. Bluefish does not freeze well which is why it’s a perfect product to consume close to its home habitat. It’s a good source of selenium, niacin, vitamin B12, magnesium and potassium.

Scup (Porgy), is a small white fish harvested in local waters since the Colonial period. Scup is often compared to Tilapia, and in side-by-side taste tests (one recently conducted at Johnson & Wales University) people found Scup to be a delectable alternative to the more popular white fish species. Scup is low-sodium, low-fat and high in niacin, phosphorus, vitamins B6, B12 and selenium. It’s also a good source of protein.

Photo (Bottom L) Couresty of The Local Catch

Black Bass (Sea Bass, Black Fish), although declared overfished in 2000, has successfully replenished in population thanks to strict fishing regulations and can be an excellent choice if craving seafood. Bass’ delicate, mild flavor means it needs little in the way of accoutrements, and it’s also a low-fat source of protein and magnesium.

It’s the coldest June 1st on record and I’m shivering in my navy blue Hunter boots. But all is well because while the wind whips my face, I hold a sack full of oysters, oysters that I now feel I know intimately after spending an early afternoon at the Walrus and Carpenter Oyster farm in Charlestown. Jules Opton-Himmel, founder of the farm, is my tour guide on this gloomy Monday. The farm has grown exponentially over the past years and now covers six acres of Ninigret Pond. “We’ve seen more and more that people in the state want local oysters,” says Opton-Himmel as we glide across mildly choppy waters towards his oyster processing headquarters, A.K.A. a boat currently occupying five men sorting hundreds of bivalves by size. What began as a 60,000 oyster operation has grown to a 2-3 million operation, and the farm provides their product to over 30 restaurants in Rhode Island. In South County alone, W&C oysters can be found at The Rathskeller, Breachway Bar and Grill, TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill and the Coast Guard House. Later this summer, Walrus and Carpenter will host their third series of Oyster Farm Dinners where they invite interested parties to tour the farm and sit down for an in-the-water-raw-bar dinner provided by celebrated local chefs committed to sourcing local seafood. The Ever-Evolving Industry

Locally caught Lobster and Sweet Corn Tamale from The Coast Guard House

Local. Fresh. Quality. Affordability. Transparency. These five words define the future of the seafood industry in Rhode Island, not because of trend or fashion, but because consumers are finally realizing how over processed and unnecessarily complicated the structures are behind their supermarket tuna steaks. People are demanding quality and freshness because they can, and because as Rhode Islanders, we are literally surrounded by an ocean teeming with edible treasures. Affordability comes with simplification – the more convoluted a process, the more steps added, the greater the cost; it’s simple economics. And without this somewhat recent demand for transparency for knowing everything about what one puts into their body, then major fishing companies could continue operating in the same ways they have been for years. So, the next time you see both Salmon and Scup on the menu, which will you choose?

Seafood Appreciation Skill: Making a Clam Boil Preparation. Gather all of your ingredients and a large (around a 5 gallon or so) pot with a lid. The elements that take the longest to cook are placed at the bottom, and the seafood will steam atop them. Steam the whole pot for about 15-20 minutes, or as long as it takes for the potatoes to become tender.

Fish filets Any hearty fish filet will do. Scup and Cod are great choices. Steam them on top in a brown bag so they don’t fall apart. Lobsters If you’re a fan, throw a couple in. Clams Littlenecks or Cherrystones work best for this. They should be scrubbed clean of sand and dirt, and any open clams should be discarded. Water Level Pour in just enough water to cover the potatoes, onions and corn. Make sure the water is salted heavily, it should taste like the sea. Sweet Corn Don’t forget one of Rhode Island’s best ingredients. Local sweet corn is just the ticket to take this boil to the next level. Onions These are mostly to season the broth and the ingredients, so you can cut them in half and toss them in after you peel off the outer skin. Potatoes Medium sized potatoes go all the way at the bottom.

New life is breathed into a stately South Kingstown home with help from interior designer Skip Carlin

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow A South County family honors their home’s past with a vision for its future

Photography by Grace Lentini

The word “done” can

be a relative one. Narragansett-based interior designer Skip Carlin had been working with a longtime client in South Kingstown to establish the look and feel of the family’s historic home when they made the decision to expand the square footage with a sizable addition. The stately home once belonged to former Rhode Island Governor Charles D. Kimball, who was a member of the state House of Representatives from 1894-99 and served as Lieutenant Governor from 1900-01. When incumbent governor William Gregory passed away while serving, Kimball assumed the role as the highest officer in the state until 1903. The grand home, as was de rigueur around the turn of the century, included formal living spaces, roomy bedrooms and multiple baths, while staff quarters, which usually included anywhere from five to ten small bedrooms, were relegated to the third, or

top floor. As it was mostly serviced by staff, the kitchen was often diminutive as well: a strictly utilitarian space with a butler’s pantry. That was certainly the case in the Gov. Kimball home, when the presentday owners bought the peaceful, private estate, perched on a little more than four acres between Route 1 and the Narrow River nearly 12 years ago. Over the past dozen years, it has served as a summer home and weekend retreat. In that time, the third floor staff quarters were transformed from several cozy bedrooms into a few larger ones plus a wide space for children to play. Custom crafted bunk beds for the little ones in the nooks and crannies of the space were designed by Eric Baxter of Baxter Design Build with Carlin’s vision and input from the owner. “I love it,” Baxter says about the synergy the trio shares. “Skip and the homeowners discussed what they want and I designed the area with my background

with CAD design and a degree in Civil Engineering. Every project there has been a huge collaboration.” More recently though, as the couple discovered the home is where they wanted to eventually retire, they decided it was best to plan ahead and build new space that would afford comfortable, one-level living and a spacious kitchen to both enjoy and to accommodate guests. “What triggered the addition was that the existing kitchen was amazingly tiny,” explains Baxter. “They needed a nice, new entertaining kitchen.” Though the new contemporary space would be unchartered territory at the address, Carlin and Baxter’s considerable experience with the homeowners prepared them well to tackle the new addendum. “We had developed a very good working relationship over that time – I understood their tastes and lifestyle pretty well. We were able to reach consensus

fairly quickly on most design decisions,” Carlin says. “The biggest challenge that the addition presented was to be consistent with the feel of the existing house while having a distinct style of its own – not just a large ‘wing’ tacked on.” Architect Nancy Leslie of South Kingstown was charged with designing a graceful and visually interesting structure that merged the home’s past with its present. With more than 350 projects under her belt ranging from diminutive 17th century historic restorations to 10,000-square foot commercial complexes, Leslie was up for the challenge. The RISD alum examined the existing house and carried over subtle details and proportions throughout the new spaces with the shared input and execution by Baxter. With abundant natural light filling the open and user-friendly floor plan, the results are a warm, inviting place where it’s almost easy to forget which July 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

parts are original and which are newly constructed. “Every piece of trim in that addition was custom milled to match the existing home inside and out,” declares Baxter. “From the baseboard and the exterior crown molding; the water table molding to the window trim.” He credits Dwyer Hardwoods in Narragansett and HCW with the exquisite woodwork. “[Eric] provided a very high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail appropriate to the complexity of the project. Many key elements – windows, doors, moldings, cabinetry – had to be custom sourced and painstakingly installed,” explains Carlin.

52

When it came to the interior, Carlin was excited to merge modern conveniences in the new space with the history and charm of the existing ones. “I’d say that the objective was always to create attractive and livable rooms that respected the traditional style of the existing house… For the new addition, the objective was to give the rooms a more contemporary and open feel while respecting traditional materials and details,” explains Carlin. The “open feel” was critical to the homeowners. With three grown children and six grandchildren, who are frequent visitors during summers and holidays, and four-legged

friends, of course, room to roam was a necessity. Having updated every room of the existing house, the cooperation between Carlin and the homeowners helped guide the designer’s hand. “Since they owned a nice collection of furniture, rugs and art, most of the emphasis was on fabric and color choices, window treatments and lighting,” explains Carlin. For pieces they were still in need of, Carlin and the homeowners shopped the Boston Design Center and design centers in New York, augmented with extensive online searches, for the perfect fit. Carlin also reached out to his vast design network including

Providence-based painter and muralist Sandy MacDonald, who did the decorative painting and floor stenciling, and Hwang Bishop in Warren who designs and makes lamps with many custom options. As the summer sun shines and the salty breezes off the not-too-faroff Atlantic Ocean cool this South County family and their guests this time of year, it’s easy to understand that moving forward, there’s no place else they’d rather be.

Meet Beecher Leonard-Fritzmeier, one of Alex and Ani’s lead designers Beecher Leonard-Fritzmeier is the vice president of design at Alex and Ani. We sat down with her to talk summer style beyond the bangle.

Photography by Ian Travis Barnard

You’ve got such a chic sense of style. I’d call your look bohemian minimalist. How would you describe it? I have never put a label on it. I like mixing feminine and masculine looks and I prefer a minimalist look, building interest with accessories. Your designer brand cred is through the roof. Tell me about your journey from Coach to Brahmin to Alex and Ani, and how your past experience influences what you do now. I love accessories, from jewelry to leather goods to hats to sunglasses. I am fortunate to have had a clear career path. My past experiences have allowed me to realize that I prefer to be in an environment where I get to utilize both sides of my brain. I love collaborative companies where I am able to be both creative and business savvy. What’s an average day like at Alex and Ani for you?

There is no average day. I always feel challenged. I have an amazing team and we touch every product category to ensure that we are giving our customer the best experience possible. I think most people only think of Alex and Ani as a bangle company. What else do you create? Right now, we offer expandable necklaces, earrings and rings along with leather goods, candles, room spray and body care. We always look forward and the future holds many other exciting possibilities. We want to offer essential, high quality items that our customer will use and appreciate throughout the day. What’s the next big thing we can expect? Tell me about what’s on the horizon. Our precious metal assortment will be expanding as we move into 2016. Our founder, Carolyn Rafaelian, not only comes up with beautiful designs but is also focused on new functionality so we will be continuing to come out with new innovative pieces in the next year.

How do you come up with ideas for new bangles when you’re working with such a popular brand? How do you distinguish new designs from what people already know and love? It is all about the connection and offering our customers meaningful pieces that they can relate to. We have an incredible team who strives to create original artwork that ties to authentic meanings. What jewelry do you wear every day? I am obsessed with our Precious line. The pieces are comfortable and easy to wear so I never have to take them off and they are delicate enough so they never feel overpowering. They can be layered with other jewelry so they are truly the perfect staple pieces.

MERCEDES BENZ VOLKSWAGEN MINI PORSCHE

It’s been awhile since I’ve taken any sort of group class; I’m more of a do-it-yourself kind of gal. But once I heard about Arielle Arts and their Beginner Adult Class in aerial tissue, I was intrigued. It was a warm Monday night when I stepped into a large building set back from Route 2. I arrived early to watch the class before me, Youth High Flyers. It was a beginner to intermediate class featuring 10-14 year old girls and boys, and boy were they impressive. Strong, fearless and beautiful, these kids moved up and down the aerial tissue with the greatest of ease, easily hoisting themselves upward and onward. Some were posing on the tissue near the mats on the ground, others were near the ceiling, fearless of how high they were off the ground. I thought to myself, “If they could do it, so could I.” I did some light stretching and then was guided, with my five other classmates, to one of the mats with an aerial tissue poised in the center, hanging from the ceiling. I was directed to the white one that had very little stretch in the fabric. The fabric is a very special nylon blend, the majority being silk. It is drop rated up to 2,000 pounds, and before it is sold to the public, it is thoroughly tested to ensure it doesn’t tear or rip. As an aerialist becomes more advanced, you will want more stretch in the fabric to distribute the weight as you perform more drops and other techniques. The first move I did was to stand in between the two strands of tissue, wrap each around my wrist in a lock and perform a pull-up. Whew! I still had it. For the next move, I lifted myself up again, and swung my lower body upward to get one of my feet to touch the tissue above my hands. This gave me the ability to push the rest of my body upside down into an inversion. With my instructor Ana Poirier’s help, I was able to stay inverted for five seconds and find the balance point. It was exhilarating. Inversions are a basic move that every aerialist has in their repertoire, and eventually can be performed at any height. After this, the whole group stepped off the mats and came together for a 15 minute stretch session. During this time we focused on making sure that our back and shoulders were warmed up properly and that our three splits were stretched

Ana expertly guided us through stretches and helped us pinpoint the individual areas in each of our bodies that required the most warming up. She’s also the head coach, under owner Amanda Cortellesso, for the entire gym. Before coming to Arielle Arts, she did an intensive training program at the New England Center for Circus Arts. “That was my training before I came to be a full time teacher. It gave me the confidence to know that I do all my skills correctly and have good form,” she explains. “The rest of my training I’ve gotten from Amanda. She’s been amazing as far as helping me perfect my form and become a better teacher.” After stretching and returning to our mats, the group was guided based on their abilities. Some had been coming for weeks, their bodies strong and able to perform lifts, locks and beautiful poses. Others, like myself, had only come to one or two classes and were still working on the basics. The next basic technique I learned was the double foot lock, a move that enables you to stand on the strands of tissue safely and be able to perform other moves from there.

May 29, 2015, East Side Monthly, July Issue

After practicing wrapping the tisJune 5, 2014, Bay Magazine, July issue sue around each of my feet and finally June 9, 2014, SO Rhode Island, July Issue standing on both of them successfully off the ground, Ana instructed me on how to do a single foot lock. I wrapped both strands of tissue around one foot, reached high above my head to grab onto each strand, hoisted myself up and stood on one foot. It turns out that even though I am right handed, I seem to be left-footed, meaning that my left is my dominant foot. Once in the air, standing on my left foot, I drew my right knee forward, in between the two strands, wiggled my shoulders in front of the tissue, arched my back and pushed my left foot Clothing, Jewelry & Accessories backwards. I successfully completed a forward arch. Coastal Expressions George’s Bank Scallops at the Restaurant at Weekapaug Inn

It’s easy to forget what an amazing place southern Rhode Island is. If you ever need a reminder, all you need to do is visit the shoreline or have an amazing meal prepared with freshly caught seafood. Dining at the Restaurant at Weekapaug Inn covers both of those bases. Turn the page to read more. July 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

By Stacey Place

Seasonal Elegance The Restaurant at Weekapaug Inn highlights the best of local flavors There are several dining options at the Weekapaug Inn. The main dining room is simply named The Restaurant. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, all year long. Adjacent to the restaurant, the Garden Room is a lovely lounge space which is also open year round. In addition to having great views of the pond, there is a bar and small plates menu. The second floor Sea Room is open year round for cocktails, but its menu of small plates and sandwiches and outdoor deck seating are only available during the summer months. In order to partake in the variety of the seasonal local produce, meat and seafood, the menus at the inn change frequently. Therefore, the menus when I visited in late spring will differ considerably from the menus available mid-summer. Executive Chef Jennifer Backman hails from Washington State but fell in love with Rhode Island during her college days at Johnson & Wales. Before arriving to the Weekpaug Inn, she worked at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, the Inn at Castle Hill and then worked her way up to Executive Sous Chef at the Ocean House. On a gorgeous Rhode Island spring night, my family and I arrived at the Weekapaug Inn, and we were immediately blown away by the ambiance and its perfectly landscaped grounds. Photos of the property do not do it justice. The valet took our car and insisted he be allowed to lead us to the restaurant. Everyone we encountered at the inn was just as pleasant, friendly and willing to serve as the valet. Though the stately inn’s appearance was grand, the people who work there are very

friendly and down to earth. We had initially been worried that the Restaurant would be stuffy and pretentious based on the need for a dress code (no shorts), but the worry was unfounded. We were lead to our spacious table on the enclosed veranda, took in the amazing view of Quonochontaug Pond and felt the beauty of the place relax our modern cares away. Our waitress, Leah, could not have been nicer or more helpful, and her team of bussers and servers was attentive to our every need. To start, we were provided a choice of still or sparkling water. I loved being able to choose sparkling at no extra cost. We also ordered a round of cocktails. My choice,

the Block Island Paloma ($15), was a mix of Milagro Tequila, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, Aquidneck Honey and sumac. It was very refreshing and perfect for the warm night. My parents chose an expertly mixed Ketel One Martini ($11) and a glass of Anton Baurer Gruner Veltliner ($11). Along with our cocktails, we sampled the bread basket filled with a variety of rolls (sourdough, rosemary olive and raisin and anise). The breads were served with choices of two butters – one whipped with sea salt, the other with olive oil and honey – both were divine. Along with the bread, we were served a delectable amuse bouche – confit artichoke salad. For our starter, we all nibbled on the New England Artisan Cheese Sampler ($21). On this night, the three cheeses were all from Cato Corner Farm in Colchester, CT. The cheeses were served with grilled breads and a variety of luscious accoutrements (honey, apricot compote, quince paste and a hazelnut spread). We had a great time sampling all of the things on the plate. With four of us dining, we were able to sample a variety of the entrées. I settled on the Native Blackfish ($36). In this area, blackfish is more commonly known as tautog. It is a flaky, white fish with a mild flavor. At The Restaurant, the blackfish is simply pan seared to flaky fish perfection and sits on a purée of carrot and saffron. It was served with a mélange of seasonal vegetables – from fresh peas to

Southern Rhode Island is steeped in history. Even before Giovanni de Verrazano visited Narragansett Bay in 1524, the Narragansett and Niantic Indian Tribes hunted, fished and farmed their land along the coasts of the ocean and the bay. Native southern Rhode Islanders (myself included) don’t always take the time to appreciate the rich history of our section of the state. With summer finally upon us, we begin, just as generations did before us, our love affair with the coastline. Our bathing suit styles may have changed, but our love of the ocean and its bounty has not. Located in Westerly, The Weekapaug Inn has been a summer destination since opening its doors in 1899. Native Rhode Islander Frederick Buffum opened the inn to give families like his own a place to boat, swim, sport and socialize. His hospitality was legendary because he treated guests as old friends rather than new acquaintances. The inn relocated from its original oceanfront location after it sustained damage during the hurricane of 1938. The new location on the shore of Quonochontaug Pond provided a safer and secluded setting for vacationers. For seven decades, the Inn thrived on its summer business. Unfortunately, in 2007, the fourth generation of Buffum innkeepers could no longer sustain the singleseason business, and the inn closed. In 2010, however, Watch Hill resident Chuck Royce helped restore the inn to its former glory and turned the property into a four season resort. ramps to parsnips. My father chose the Georges Bank Scallops ($38) and was rewarded with four large scallops, flawlessly seared with a dark golden crust. The scallops were sitting on a bed of coconut scented forbidden black rice and topped with peppery togarshi, fennel-citrus relish and a sweet blood orange emulsion. My mother ordered the Baffoni Chicken ($30). The chicken was moist and flavorful with both the dark meat of the leg and the white meat of the breast on her platter. She loved the lemon papardelle noodles served with the chicken, and she tried to soak up every bit of the green-peppercorn Madeira jus. The friend I brought along on this family night tried the Tortelloni ($36). Her bowl was literally full to the brim with eight large homemade tortelloni stuffed with sweet pea and Narragansett Creamery ricotta. They were served with preserved lemon and the most delicious house smoked bacon. Other than the tortelloni, the portions were not large, but everything tasted fresh and was prepared extremely well. The dessert menu had five different options all created by Pastry Chef Jaimie Lindberg. Since it was my father’s birthday, we let him choose dessert, and he picked Lindberg’s Flavors of S’mores creation ($10). This dessert had all of the things you love about s’mores taken to the next level. There was a chocolate covered Baviarian chocolate mousse cake, handmade

50 South County Common Way, South Kingstown (401) 783-4445 • www.tongdsk.com cinnamon graham cracker, housemade toasted marshmallows and my favorite part, dark cherries. The inn also offers a really fun dessert option – s’mores cooked over a bonfire on the shore of Quonochontaug Pond. We saw several families who were staying at the inn go down and enjoy this fun and tasty activity. Best of all, this option is free! The hospitality didn’t end until we paid the bill and Leah brought us out two bags of brownie cookies for the ride home. Though staying at the inn or enjoying a meal there is not an inexpensive activity, anyone can tour the grounds or public areas. Just as in the days of Frederick Buffum, you will be welcomed as a cherished guest and treated to hospitality one rarely finds in the service industry anymore. As you sip a cocktail, make a s’more, enjoy a lobster roll or play a lawn game, you can imagine you are back in a simpler time and let the cares of the modern world fade away. As Pitbull eloquently puts it, sometimes “to understand the future, you have to go back in time.”

Sippin’ On Summertime Galilee’s newest restaurant comes with a side of ferry watching

Photography by Blink of an Eye Photography

It’s summer, and what better way to spend it in South County than by grabbing a bite to eat while watching the sunset as the Block Island Ferry chugs along. This is exactly what Chris Willett and Tim and Greig Pelleccione had in mind when they opened The Sandbar in Galilee this past May. “We’re always looking for new restaurant opportunities. All three of us are very hands on,” Chris says. The three amigos currently own and operate 300 North, located in Saunderstown attached to the Holiday Inn. 300 North is an upscale Italian eatery, but with a down-to-earth atmosphere with prices to match. The Sandbar is attached to the Lighthouse Inn in Galilee, and is geared more towards high quality comfort food. “Most people that stay at the Lighthouse Inn seem to be visiting from out of town and visiting Block Island. The Rhode Thailand Calamari and the Buffalo Wings are getting rave reviews from locals and visitors alike,” Chris explains. The Rhode Thailand Calamari features fresh calamari that’s been battered and fried and then tossed in a sweet and spicy Asian sauce. The Buffalo Wings are made with The Sandbar’s super secret recipe and can be served at any heat, depending on how daring you‘re feeling that day. “We also serve an amazing breakfast,” Chris exclaims. “Our chef David Deery, aka Duke, was formerly the

owner at Dukes at Middlebridge. He is very well known for his breakfast. We serve omelettes, egg sandwiches, eggs benedicts and more. We even serve a Lobster Benedict – we get the lobster from Point Judith.” Other highlights at The Sandbar include Baked Cod with lemon butter in a white wine reduction, topped with breadcrumbs, and Sam Adams Beer Battered Fish and Chips made with fresh cod from Point Judith. To wash it all down, they have 11 beers on tap from domestics to IPA’s and are featuring frozen drinks all summer. That includes frozen mudslides and margaritas, just to name a few. You can also expect great fresh seafood, Angus beef burgers, chicken, salads and more. “In addition to our great food, we will also be featuring live entertainment on the weekends,” says Chris. “Most recently we were lucky enough to feature Hey Nineteen, an 11-piece Steely Dan tribute band and had an excellent turnout. The Sandbar is both a family-friendly restaurant as well as a destination for music and dancing. It’s a great place for a quick, good meal when traveling to Block Island.” The Sandbar is located directly across the street from the Block Island Ferry offering gorgeous views of the water, ferries and the Galilee fishing fleet. 307 Great Island Road, Narragansett. 792-7000

The Healthy Food Rub Since 1987, the family-run market Food for Thought has done more than provide a local alternative to the big box food chains; they provide healthy food options unavailable at big box chains such as rare gluten-free and vegan options. And considering that South County doesn’t have a Whole Foods, Food for Thought provides a niche market for health conscious locals and visitors. They also highlight area farms and products such as The Reynolds Barn’s goat cheese and goat’s milk soap, Poblano sauce and salsa, Narragansett Creamery and Pat’s Pasteured, to name a few. Another notch they’ve recently added to their belt is their new in-store Wellness Room. It features a skincare esthetician, reflexologist, reiki practitioner, massage therapist and instructor on Emotional Freedom Technique and Jin Shin Jyutsu. For a food store that’s been ahead of the health food trend for years, it looks like they can add holistic offerings to their repertoire. 577 Kingstown Road, Wakefield. 789-2445, www. myfoodforthoughtri.com

Have Olive It If you’re an olive oil and specialty vinegar fanatic, then it’s time to hop in the car and head over to Pawcatuck. Capizzano Olive Oils and Vinegars offers in-store tastings of over 30 different olive oils, balsamic vinegars and flavored oils. Owners Steve and Suzanne Capizzano originally worked in the healthcare industry, and are excited to share their knowledge of the benefits of fresh, delicious olive oil with the community. Freshly crushed olive oils have high levels of polyphenols, an antioxidant with various health benefits. The olive oils available at Capizzano will have the crush dates clearly labeled on the bottle, as opposed to many grocery store brands that have been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. To accompany the in-store tasting, Steve and Suzanne will have bread ready for dipping, but apparently, the best way to experience high-level olive oil is by enjoying it one sip at a time. 5 Coggeswell Street, Suite 1. The Farm League Ethan Farrell on Sunset Farm’s fresh philosophy Ethan Farrell moved to Narragansett’s Sunset Farm when he was eight years old, and has been learning about agriculture ever since. We talked about heirloom vegetables, hand cut steaks and what locavore gourmet chefs want from his farm. Okay, first things first. Is Kinney Bungalow part of Sunset Farm? I always assumed that the two were interchangeable. Yes, Kinney Bungalow is a part of Sunset Farm. The farm was built in 1864; the bungalow was added to the property in 1899, named after Francis Kinney. Throughout the summer, the bungalow hosts weddings and other various events on the grounds. Tell me about your background. My family and I moved to Sunset Farm as caretakers in 1999. In 2014, we signed a lease of the property for the next 25 years. Both my parents, Suzanne and Jeff Farrell, came from agricultural backgrounds. When we moved to the farm, I was eight years old. This is when I started my education in agriculture. What do you raise at Sunset Farm? Here on Sunset Farm, we raise pigs, beef cattle and grow a wide array of farm fresh crops in our gardens. We

68 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2015

also have a handful of horses, goats and an Irish wolfhound named Lucious. How can we buy your meats and veggies? Sunset Farm has a retail market from the middle of June until the end of October, where you can buy individually cut Angus steaks and burgers. We also have fresh pork products. As for the farm fresh vegetables, there is a wide array of options. Some of the best heirlooms include Brandywine, Cherokee Purple and our hybrid Carolina Gold. Sunset also has a wholesale market year round that provides products for local restaurants. We also supply fresh meats and produce to Luca’s farmstead market located on Block Island. Sunset Farm supplies an impressive number of excellent local restaurants. One of the restaurants we supply to is The Mews Tavern. Here we supply burger patties used for the Rhody Natural Burger and the Salt Pond Burger. At Local 121, we provide ground beef for their Sunset Farm Double Cheeseburger. At Hotel Viking’s Restaurant, OneBellevue, Sunset Farm provides our 8 oz. burger patty and beef brisket. We’re also on Block Island, at the Poor People’s Pub. Here we supply pork, beef and farm fresh vegetables. At Charlie O’s, we supply burger patties

for their Sunset Farm Burger. We supply ground beef to The Coast Guard House for their own version of a Sunset Farm Burger. Trio also has a Sunset Farm Burger, made with ground beef or a 4 oz. patty. Spain Restaurant uses a variety of farm fresh produce and beef cross cut shanks. We also supply Mariner Grille with ground beef and El Fuego with salsa tomatoes. I hear you’ve got an exciting new project you’re launching. Tell me about this new truck and where we can find it. Sunset Farm now has a mobile kitchen that will be used for baked goods such as pies, cookies, banana bread, zucchini bread and blueberry buckle. The trailer will also be used for our homemade jams, jellies, relishes and garlic dill pickles. We will also have weekend concessions that provide salads and snacks on-the-go with all products straight from the farm. The trailer will be located on the property of Sunset Farm, looking to begin being open on the weekends by mid July.

RHODY BITES A Sponsored Statewide Dining Guide

View our full restaurant profiles on RhodyBites.com

The Coast Guard House The Coast Guard House, nestled alongside Narragansett Beach, has reopened its doors after being devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. It features a new lounge and dining area with double the ocean view. Sip on a Bloody Uprising (made with locally crafted whiskey) in their first floor dining room while taking in the sights. A new, diamond-shaped bar captures the fabulous panorama, where visitors can enjoy a selection of local craft beers, a Chardonnay created by Newport Vineyards, a Mudslide made with Dave’s Coffee Syrup or any other thirstquenching selections. The owners and managers can be found greeting old

friends walking along the seawall, and regulars ask about the house-made lobster ravioli and seared scallops dishes that have been longtime favorites. New menu items include shrimp tempura, crab mac ’n cheese and a double baked potato with lobster. Sit outside on the patio and enjoy a delicious meal while watching the surf roll in and out. That swordfish on your fork comes from local fishermen, while the produce on your plate is brought to you by Farm Fresh Rhode Island. Whether you’re in the mood for a post-swim cocktail or a romantic seaside dinner for two, the Coast Guard House has just what you need.

demonstrations: the Clancy Designs Glass Studio in Jamestown, located in a renovated 1787 early American-style post and beam barn. Jennifer and David have resided in Jamestown for 18 years and have been blowing glass together for more than 16 of them; David originally trained as a production glassblower and Jennifer studied glass casting. Their collaborative foray in nature studies started eight years ago, inspired by specimens cultivated on their own property; both husband and wife are avid gardeners, sharing three flower gardens and two vegetable gardens. Many of these plants have served as actual models for their glass creations, while other

more tropical flora do not thrive in a New England climate and must be sourced elsewhere. “We take the physical plants and study them to determine their shapes and how they are structured,” says David. “From there, the process is all trial and error; it’s like creating a sketch, except with glass. We usually use clear glass to start, so as not to waste color, and it takes about two or three days to figure out how to make the shape. Next, we figure out the color palette. Once we have both of those down, then we start constructing the actual plant.” The gallery opening for Nature Studies in Glass was held at the museum on May 29 and drew in a huge crowd. The exhibit will remain in place throughout the summer, until September 7. Those who wish to learn more about the glassmaking process or see additional work by the Clancys can witness their meticulous craftmanship firsthand at their Jamestown studio, where they make art Mondays through Fridays (and sometimes on weekends). Three other Jamestown artists are also exhibiting at the Newport Art Museum at the same time as the Clancys: printmaker Peter Marcus, photographer Roger Birn and sculptor Janet Prip. Together, the artists host occasional group studio tours in Jamestown as

part of the Jamestown Alliance for Artist Sustainability. The next tour will be happening on Saturday, August 1. Those interested in attending can email jaas02835@gmail.com for more information. Jennifer and David also participate in major craft shows along the East Coast, and much of their stunning work is available for purchase, with the goal of providing customers with “unique pieces for their homes that will transform their everyday spaces and daily rituals.” They make an array of functional pieces like colorful bowls and drinkware, while other creations are more decorative, including centerpieces and ornaments.

At first glance, it might seem as if the Newport Art Museum has chosen to display several vibrant floral and plant arrangements as one of its summer exhibitions. Look more closely, however, and you will see that these blossoms and leaves are in fact crafted from colored glass that has been delicately shaped into exquisite tendrils and petals. Though the exhibit is titled Nature Studies in Glass, a scientific-sounding name, the hand-blown glassworks it contains are sheer artistry – the creative offspring of husband and wife glassmaking duo Jennifer and David Clancy. The Clancys have their own local studio where they cultivate their creations and also conduct public tours and

The Kids Are Alright Public Alley headlines WBRU summer concert

2015 WBRU Rock Hunt Winner Public Alley

Photography by Tim Siekiera

If this year’s Rock Hunt had been a movie, critics would have called out the ending for being too obvious, but in real life it was the kind of thing you never saw coming. Picture it: a band made up of a bunch of bright-eyed high schoolers with nothing to lose. Against all odds and expectations they came out and killed it. Despite all of the years under the collective belts of the other three bands, Public Alley managed a singularly outstanding performance. When they walked away champions the only people surprised were the members of Public Alley. “We never saw ourselves in this situation,” says singer Zoë Hinman. After their eleventh hour submission to the Rock Hunt – which as they tell it was literally conceived and submitted an hour before the midnight deadline – failed to earn them a spot competing in the semi-finals, drummer Max Fertik caught wind of the wild card slot. The band, all of whom are students at East Greenwich High School, with the exception of keyboard player Szabi Kiss who is currently studying at MIT, embarked on an aggressive campaign to get into the finals. “We were really passionate about getting this spot,” adds Zoë. As passionate as they were, their expectations weren’t too high once they earned that coveted fourth spot. “We went into it thinking it was a good gig, we’d get to play with these great bands we’ve been listening to and get our name out there,” says bass player Cam Cianciolo. For them being there genuinely seemed to be enough of a reward.

“We used to talk about being in the Rock Hunt the way people talk about what they would do if they won the lottery,” says Zoë. She doesn’t just say that to be polite or faux-humble. For them, Rock Hunt is Olympus, inhabited by a pantheon of local rock gods who have won the competition before them. Noah spoke about seeing 2009 winner Fairhaven play at Lupo’s a few years back with an almost spiritual reverence. “When I listened to them then, I didn’t think of them as just a Rock Hunt winner, I thought of them as Young the Giant and OK Go. They were a famous band to me. I looked up to them.” Playing Lupo’s is one of the spoils that comes with winning the Rock Hunt – “Thinking that we’re going to be on that stage blows my mind,” says Cam – as is a headlining spot during WBRU’s free summer concert series this month at Waterplace Park in Providence, which last year saw performances by national acts like Phantogram and Kongos. For Public Alley, the Rock Hunt isn’t a stepping stone to the big break, it is the big break. As far as they’re concerned they’ve made it, and with that locked down, it’s just back to making catchy, high-energy rock and roll.

Killer Combinations

Classic Italian

Brickley’s rich and creamy salted caramel ice cream combined with slightly crunchy cashew halves and big semisweet chocolate chips for a savory surprise. Perfect in an ice cream cone, we liked this version as is, free from toppings or sprinkles that may distract from its awesome composition. 921 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 789-1784, www.brickleys.com

Nana’s Gelato’s Bacio gelato was similar to a grown up Nutella. This not-toosweet base mixed with super fine hazelnut bits for a pleasing texture. Packed with notes of real cocoa, this mixture would be heavenly with a slab of Italian biscotti or sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies. 28A Pier Market Place, Narragansett. 782-2705, www.nanasgelato.com

Delectable Refresher

A Parent Trap Twist

Deliciously light and airy, Junk and Java’s mint chocolate chip gelato had small but obvious chocolate chips dispersed throughout the subtle, yet refreshing, mint flavor for a hint of sweetness that didn’t distract from the plant’s natural quality. Brisk but not overly pungent, we thought this interpretation trumped artificial alternatives any day. 49 Beach Street, Westerly. 315-0111, www.facebook.com/JunkandJava

What happens when you combine the bold flavors of peanut butter and Oreos? A super smooth ice cream reminiscent of Reese’s Pieces with yummy hunks of cookie. Unlike typical peanut butter ice creams, The Inside Scoop’s version wasn’t heavy or loaded with saturating flavored swirls. Instead of competing, the components worked together for a stellar combination. 30 Ten Rod Road, North Kingstown. 294-0091, www.theinsidescoopri.com

Truth: ice cream and gelato are wonderful anytime of year, but during the summer they’re almost elemental. With four homemade hot spots to cool you down, you can’t go wrong in South County.
