Sweet Remedies Soda fountains aren’t just the stuff of your grandparents’ memories or old movies. At least not anymore. Green Line Apothecary brings an old school experience to Wakefield through a family owned pharmacy, complete with a classic ice cream counter.

Good For Aches, Pains and a Sweet Tooth Green Line Apothecary brings back the pharmacy that time forgot It’s hard not to fall in love with the quirks of Wakefield – walking down historic Main Street feels like you’re about to become part of a communal dance number. Hold the show tunes, because adding to this small-town feel is Christina and Ken Procaccianti’s newly opened Green Line Apothecary. Inspired by vintage pharmacies, this family-owned and operated shop transports you back in time, complete with doo-wop tunes and, of course, the classic soda bar. But this isn’t just any old soda fountain – the restored piece of history from the ‘40s serves all-natural, made-to-order sodas and floats made with organic ice cream. That’s right, all the ingredients to make these classic drinks are natural, right down to the organic green sprinkles. For Christina and Ken, it is all about “bringing it back to the roots” of the profession – combining the personalized customer service of the past with both the modern and holistic worlds of medicine. And if you have any questions, Christina will gladly answer them and remember you by name. As both the owner and head pharmacist, Christina has found herself in the independently owned pharmacy business nearly all of her life. Her passion for the profession can be found throughout Green Line Apothecary, from the smiles exchanged to the shelves stocked. Everything you find is Christina’s interpretation of “pharmacist recommended” – not just professionally chosen products, but personally chosen. You can shop around for essentials like Tylenol and cold medicine, and on the same shelf you’ll find holistic, natural options. Even local products like Aquidneck Island Honey and soaps and scrubs from Newport’s Shore Soap Company can be found at Green Line. Christina aims for the sweet spot between the homeopathic

Botanical Beauty at Blue Moon Farm

Blue Moon Farm approaches their gardens with a painter’s eye to detail

For 30 years, Jane Case has conceived and created magnificent perennial gardens. Blue moon farm on South Kingstown’s Saugatucket Road is her home base, garden consulting business, retail store and for visitors, a welcomed destination. There are four shade houses, a natural stone bridge over pumpkin orange koi with pickerel weed plants settled into white edges, a cut flower garden, beehives for honey and lip balm and acres of beautiful native plants. Jane has style. With an artist’s eye she sees graceful iris borders complementing green vegetable gardens, tall flowers like Joe Pye Weed bringing warm pinks and purples to paled landscapes, light canopied soils thick with shade tolerant ferns and Autumn Bride heucheras. Native plants, she understands, work in harmony with our environment. “We love beautifying places, we love our native plants.” Jane believes perennial, native plants make more sense, a gardening concept now widely embraced. “A new sense of environmental awareness has helped,” she says, with gardeners using fewer chemicals, which saves crucial pollinators and provides food for local animals. Farm manager Mike Yarworth agrees to embrace a logical,

whole lifecycle concept. “Native plants attract native insects, which attract native birds,” he said. Blue Moon Farm enjoys thinking and planting differently than conventional gardeners. “We work with native and unusual plants and we do veer towards the unusual,” Jane says, smiling. They offer four species of fragrant milkweed, from common to tropical, for summer blossoms which feed Monarch butterflies migrating from Mexico. There are rows of bright hydrangea, tall stewartia, black pots of David Austin roses and full green shrubs opposite xeriscape offerings like sedums and creeping thyme. Planting will continue when the dry summer fades to a cool fall, “which is equally good a time as spring; there is no blistering sun,” Jane notes. Built on Jane and Mike’s shared love for perennials, Blue Moon Farm envisions, designs and creates unique and personal garden destinations. With that artist’s vision, beautiful gardens brushed blue with mature rattlesnake masters or made fragrant with the light vanilla of ivory Claire Austin roses will bring us joy year after year. 173 Saugatucket Road, Wakefield. 284-2369, www. Lato & the Nevers Drop Their Debut EP Narragansett musician greg Lato has no problem with dipping his toes into different genres. As a songwriter who has done work with recording artists (Billy Gilman, Jimmy McGorman) and for television (MTV, A&E), Greg knows a thing or two about mixing up his sound depending on the project. Country in particular has always struck a chord with him, and as he explains it, “With every project I’ve done as a solo artist, it always started with the intention of leaning more country than pop, but being from the Northeast, there wasn’t a lot of encouragement.” Pop rock kept winning the day, until now. With the help of some of New York and Nashville’s best, Greg put out the country record he’s long believed he had in him. The EP, Fire Between Us, debuts his country project Lato & The Nevers and is five tracks of good ol’ country heartache. Lost love, longing and a tongue in cheek look at a relationship’s quirks get the twangy, pop country treatment, and all of it should sound right at home blasting out of the truck’s stereo at a summer cookout. “I decided to go with my heart instead of my head and take that leap,” Greg says of

finally diving headfirst into country, and he wears that heart on every track. www.Facebook.com/ LatoAndTheNevers –Tony Pacitti

Back in the Day Shares the Stories of Local Fisherman author Cindy follett guldemond recently released Back In The Day, the third book in her collection of fishing stories from Point Judith. Her writing provides an in-depth look at eye-opening stories from generations of fishermen and their exciting, but often dangerous work in one of the largest fishing ports on the East Coast. Back In The Day includes tales from a generation of fishermen that she knows personally – her brothers and their friends who worked from the 1960s through the 1990s. The stories reflect on old times, before new regulations changed the way of fishing, and explain what it was like for the men to learn the trade from their fathers, uncles and captains. In addition to the fishermen’s stories, Cindy also introduces friends of the fishermen to shed light on the men and the port from a different perspective. She also includes the wives side of the story, who discuss what it was like to stay at home alone with the kids before there were any cell phones to communicate with while their husbands were out at sea. Andre Boudreau, Island Funny Without Limitations

22

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2016

Funny man Andre Boudreau is a jack of all trades

recent role is in William DeVogue’s upcoming film, Unveiling, where he plays an abusive stepfather to the real-life Middletown resident who believes he’s Bob Dylan’s son. This love for acting has landed him in almost 30 films and introduced him to many key people behind the scenes, so now he passionately supports bringing a filmmaking program to the island school, with cameras and professionals to visit and teach. Looking out his living room window, he shrugs as a half dozen kids ignore the “Danger Eroded Bluffs” sign hung on a fence meant to keep them safe to shoot selfies from a clay ledge without any real support. Building the infrastructure for island students to develop shorts or features would bring a higher level of training for careers on either side of the camera, on or off the island. “I want to bring those opportunities to these kids,” he said. In the 2008 cult classic, Nun of That, Andre played a character named Lucky and as the squid suit sits in the attic, it’s a role that suits him perfectly. –Todd Corayer

the full-body quahog suit would fit behind the stainless steel counter but the squid costume, well that would surely get stuck in the exhaust fan. There’s only just so much room behind the line of Andre Boudreau’s southeast Light Delights food truck, parked in the shadow of Block Island’s historic lighthouse, where he lives. Having already caught his squid’s head in the Yellow Kittens ceiling fan years ago, Andre has learned his limitations, holding himself to being a business owner, chef, ordained minister, house painter, father, film actor, husband and patron of the arts. He has married more than 70 couples since 2001 and for many years, ran one of the island’s marine septic pump out boats, which is how he met Supreme Court Justice Maureen Goldberg one summer. She later married Andre to Lisa Nolan on a schooner which they never actually reserved for the small family wedding or even mentioned their intentions to the ships caretaker. Having just awakened to their unexpected arrival, he was, of course, cordially invited to attend. Andre is a consummate, natural funny man, one of the lucky few who can make anyone laugh or not think twice about showing up at a party dressed as a clam. There is less time for house painting when the summer season arrives and his food truck is a busy destination for hungry tourists walking, biking or riding mopeds up a long, steep and curvaceous Spring Street. The signature dish may be his amazing Lobster Roll, but it’s a thick Lobster Grilled Cheese with sauteed fresh lobster, heirloom tomatoes, smoky bacon and a top secret cheese flooding the whole deal that has become a real favorite. He pours endless cups of Del’s Lemonade, frequently bewildered watching some take a haul from the yellow waxed cups before adding shots of coconut rum or champagne from mini bottles before climbing back aboard. After cooking, painting, officiating weddings and shuttling his son Jacques around the block, there’s the acting. He’s worked in all the major genres: slasher, comedy, zombie apocalypse, Frankenstein, exorcist and old fashioned bloody murder in movies like The Disco Exorcist, Murder University and Atomic Brain Invasion. The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is still fantastic after all these years By Amanda M. Grosvenor Photography by Blink of an Eye Photography

Anyone who visits The Fantastic Umbrella Factory can pet the emus – at their own risk!

a

former

co-worker mentioned “The Umbrella Factory” several years ago, it was somehow the first I’d ever heard of it. I was stunned that such a place existed – right in my home state, no less! She described it as “sort of a hippie place in South County that sells art and gifts and has farm animals and gardens and stuff” – so, nothing to actually do with the manufacturing of umbrellas, I garnered. Sufficiently intrigued, I added it to my summer “must see” list. I have since visited multiple times during different seasons and found that my associate’s description wasn’t all that far off. The Fantastic Umbrella Factory (officially) resides on a lovely rural road in Charlestown and describes itself as a “19th century farmyard shopper’s paradise and international bazaar.” Near the rustic parking lot and entrance stand multiple wooden buildings housing charming gift shops, boutiques and galleries. Winding paths pass by

lush, beautifully tended gardens (in summer) peppered with fountains and intriguing statuary. Further back, farmyard fowl roam the grounds or live in pens. In a much larger fenced-in field live the incredible, three massive emus and their friends, the two goats. To look an emu right in its sharp, sentient eye as it makes guttural prehistoric noises at you is worth the trip in and of itself. A short trail off to the side beyond the emu/goat enclosure leads to the bamboo forest – an evocative, sacred-feeling place that made me wonder if I’d somehow tripped through a mystical portal to Japan. The Umbrella Factory does feel like a surreal “hippie paradise” in some respects, and you might wonder how it has been able to survive through the economic highs and lows of Rhode Island’s past 48 years. To answer that and many other questions, I spoke with David Turano, who purchased the Umbrella Factory five years ago with his wife Linda from its original owner,

The General Store is home to eclectic gifts and, of course, candy

Robert Bankel. The Turanos had leased a shop at the Umbrella Factory since 1972, nearly its inception, so taking over felt like very familiar territory for them. David, a potter, originally rented space upstairs in the old barn (which burned down in 1989 and was later replaced) along with a glassblower and a leather worker. He later started the Small Axe Productions shop, which he continues to run with his wife and daughter, who handles most of the buying for the main store as well as a small boutique in Watch Hill. His son Gino and his girlfriend take care of the grounds, and everyone pitches in on overall maintenance tasks and improvements; it’s very much a family business. The Umbrella Factory has survived and even thrived thanks to this type of

collaborative effort and “by being very frugal about everything,” says David. “It’s not an extravagant place. The previous owner did pretty much all of the maintenance work himself, and my family is still continuing that same philosophy.” On Route 1A, there isn’t much other commercial business going on, so you have to come to the Umbrella Factory as a destination. David’s noticed that in the few years they’ve had it, they’ve been getting more and more business. “It’s definitely seasonal, but in the high season, the parking lot has been pretty much full every day, it’s both a blessing and a curse,” he says. Visitors are both locals (his definition of which includes the entire state) and tourists, with seasonality certainly influencing the percentages of who visits during which times.

$300,000,000 to Rhode Island’s economy each year!

Small Axe Productions has a cafe recently leased out to a new chef, Chris Erickson, who has developed an excellent summer menu, according to David. A nearby structure houses the upstairs South County Artisan’s Loft, managed by Deborah O’Connor. The loft serves as a storefront for different local artists and craftspeople that share the rent and space to exhibit their wares. It’s tough not to find a treasure among the more traditional mediums like paintings and pottery, ranging to exotic gifts like lit-up old liquor bottles and seashellencrusted light switch covers (I’ll admit, I couldn’t resist picking one up during my last visit). Because the items rotate regularly, it’s fun to stop in periodically and see what’s new. Beneath the artisans loft is Axiom, which specializes in vintage eyewear, 100% soy candles and other antique odds and ends. Frills boutique carries imported clothing “for the funky soul” and similar wares to Small Axe, and the General Store at the front of the establishment features candies, childrens’ gifts and novelties. The greenhouse, run by Patrick Shellman, is full of many exotic and beautiful plants for purchase. Block Prints Graphics sells graphic tees, while glitter temporary tattoos and hair wraps by Maria Ledwith are also available. The bamboo forest struck me as so unusual that I had to ask David more about its origins: “Some people say it was planted here, but I believe the bamboo forest was

native when Robert bought the place. There are actually stands of bamboo all around Rhode Island, but right now, all of it is dead. I’ve looked at stands in other places, and they’re all dead like ours; there might have been some kind of blight that came through. There are new shoots coming back, though.” This past winter appears to have been rough in other ways, too. The resident animals and chickens are housed in a canvas tent during the colder months (but building a new barn for them is a “top priority,” David says), however the ducks are free to roam. Unfortunately, most of them seem to have disappeared over the winter, perhaps to a hungry coyote or two. The often-unpredictable nature of extreme seasonality in New England clearly presents its challenges for a mostly outdoor establishment, but it also provides a stunning backdrop; the key to survival appears to be a willingness to roll with the proverbial punches (and an occasional fire or two). What’s new for this season? “A lot of the gardens became neglected before we purchased, so we’ve been working hard on them,” says David. “They look great now. We have a big dahlia garden this summer. We’re also scheduling a lot of work on the house, which was built in 1809. Between the house and the grounds, it’s a full time project, but we’re glad everyone can come and enjoy it.”

So Stylish

A Family Compound Once their kids were out of the house, one South County couple relocated to a private neighborhood in Wakefield, only to buy the house next door to accommodate the growing future generations of their family.

This home at Jerry Brown Farm is one of two that expanded to fit more generations of a family

Home Times Two

After happily raising their three sons in East Greenwich, Marian Mattison and her husband Marshall Raucci Jr. knew they wanted to move somewhere a little closer to the water, in a relaxing atmosphere. The couple fell for a charming home in Wakefield’s Jerry Brown Farm neighborhood. On the edge of Point Judith Pond, most homes on this private compound enjoy captivating water views in addition to more than 1,100 linear feet of association waterfront. The association dates back to 1946, when a group of families who summered in cottages peppering the property decided to formalize the group. Prior to this, the land belonged to sisters Sarah and Anna Peckham, but the property’s

name is derived from original owner Jeremiah Brown, who records show bought the land there in 1794. Today, property owners there cannot only claim an idyllic piece of property, but a stake in South County history as well. “The number of houses in this association is fixed, so no more houses can be built, which is great because you know what you’re going to get,” explains Marian. Such was the case with their home. It had a perfectly suitable footprint and decent bones, but after living there for some time, the couple knew they would need to make some renovations for comfortable living. “It was a small cottage and to go up to the second floor you’d almost

have to go up on your hands and knees,” she says with a laugh. “We had it for about two years and kept it as is, but so many things were just dysfunctional we decided it was time to build up.” The chief concern was that the original foundation of the home simply would not be able to carry the weight of a second, renovated floor. After multiple evaluations, there was one clear conclusion: Marian and Marshall would have to go back to the start. As one may not expect, the association does permit building on existing footprints, so the couple knew they had a shot when proposing this new build. “We had to go through our association and get all the appropriate approvals, and that

was a difficult process, but the idea of building was exciting for us,” says Marian, even though they had never done anything of the sort. When they lived in East Greenwich, the couple had formed a bond with carpenter Brad Randall. The talented tradesman had finished the couple’s basement, rebuilt a pool house and crafted other projects in their home. “So when we got the architectural plans, we said ‘Brad, do you want to build a house?’” tells Marian. Though Brad had never taken on a project of this scope, it hardly intimidated him. He, Marian and Marshall embarked on a 16-month adventure, following architectural plans but also reevaluating and redesigning spaces that after further thought, needed a

different approach. They contracted out what was outside their collective wheelhouse – HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc. – but for the most part, Marshall took on the role of general contractor and Brad was the builder. “We just worked with Brad day in and day out,” says Marian. It was 2008 and the home was functionally finished just in time for Memorial Day weekend – the unofficial start to summer. Brad was just going to tie up a few loose ends in the coming week, but the couple was devastated to learn that Brad and his wife tragically lost their lives in a motorcycle accident that Monday. “We were shattered, just shattered. When we thought about it, Marshall and I didn’t talk to anyone more

then we talked to Brad for almost two years,” says Marian. They are reminded of Brad’s vast talent when they look at every nook and cranny throughout their home. “[Brad] just did a beautiful job. His handprint is everywhere. This is his legacy.” A few short years after their home was completed, the house next door came on the market. With their three sons now adults and some starting families of their own, the couple saw the sound investment it would be to own the neighboring home. Much like their own, the home needed substantial attention. Marshall and Marian once again put on their hard hats, figuratively speaking, and got to work. “We went with a contractor and we kept saying ‘Where’s Brad?’” she says.

But they got through it, creating a warm, welcoming entertaining space including an expansive all-wood bar, called The Library, but instead of books there are games like darts and foosball, and a big screen television. “Marshall took charge of that,” laughs Marian. “It’s just a nice place to entertain and be together in the winter to watch the Super Bowl, or in the summer, to have friends over.” Both houses boast natural light throughout thanks to ample windows. “I wanted lots of windows, that’s what I said to architect. I want the outside to be what you pay attention to,” explains Marian. The windows and layout – which includes an open floor plan with a smart flow – creates the sense of a bigger space

than what is actually there. “[The houses] are not grandiose. They’re fun. They’re modest.” In the main house, the couple chose subtle historic colors by Benjamin Moore, while the guest home showcases warm Restoration Hardware pastels. “No big vibrant, colors. We wanted shades that are soft in tone,” Marian says. The family’s lifestyle equally blends seamlessly with the natural wonders of Jerry Brown Farm. “The boys love to fish and love to surf,” says Marian. “They’re always in the water, even on Christmas Day.” This time of year, the boys’ dogs are running around, family and friends cool themselves in the pond and laughter resonates from all around. You carry so many affordable items. I always aim for “adorable and affordable” personal accessories and seasonal home décor. But I also love to go outside the box every once in a while with special, indulgent items like cashmere ponchos in a delicious array of colors that I can’t get enough of. My ideal is locally made products, such as Shore Soap Company or Graceful Goods. I love when I can find a great item that is well made, local and the right price point.

Summer parties are in full swing. What’s a great hostess gift? Sassy cocktail napkins with a spreader tied up with a great big bow is cute and useful. For something more special, a set of wine glasses with the state of RI etched on them is beautiful and very affordable. So many choices! Plus we gift wrap any gift for you with personal attention. We love the nautical-inspired accessories and clothing you have. It’s summer in the Ocean State! What’s not to love? It’s time to sport an anchor tee, some starfish earrings or a nautical tunic. It just says summer and it doesn’t matter if you’re vacationing or living here – every day should be enjoyed. What’s on your summer bucket list this year? Weekly trips to the Wickford Village Farmer’s Market (Thursdays 1-5pm), drinks on the lawn at Castle Hill, day trip to Block Island, movies on the beach in Misquamicut, sunset at Beavertail, dinner in the village at Tate’s or Tavern by the Sea after work, and of course lots of beach time. I’m so lucky to live here!

for having the best surfs spots in New England and Warm Winds Surf Shop in Narragansett has been riding the waves since opening in 1973. With 500 surfboards in stock and wetsuits in all sizes, it has been a destination for locals and tourists alike. They were carrying stand up paddleboards before the sport was popular and they have a massive selection of skateboard decks for small board riders. After an expansion last year, the store has now tripled in size and gone full steam ahead with clothing and accessories for the complete surf lifestyle. Although they always had a

A local company uses flowers to keep summer skin beautiful

Believe it or not, there are some people who give themselves the whole summer off from skin care. The thinking goes like this: I’m going to be in the sun anyway, so why bother when I’m just going straight back to the beach? Effectively, you’re giving yourself a pass on taking proper care of yourself for a whole quarter of the year. I get it. I love the beach, too. That’s why I’m so excited about Farmaesthetics’ new summer skincare line. I can have my summer tan, and still have the healthy skin I work so hard to maintain the rest of the year. I’ve been a fan of Farmaesthetics for a long time. The company, based in Portsmouth, was the first in Rhode Island to not only believe that skincare should be as close to nature as possible, but to make world-class products that work as well (or better) than their chemical-filled counterparts. Their Fine Herbal Cleanser has five ingredients, two of which are lavender and geranium essential oils. I love the 30 seconds of aromatherapy it gives me every morning, while gently cleansing and balancing my skin. Because I’m a beach bum – seriously, what else do we live in Rhode Island for? – I get a reliable set of skin issues during the summer. All of the sunscreen gives me clogged pores, and all of the sun gives me inevitable peeling. Apparently I’m not the only person who experiences this, because Farmaesthetics’ new summer line is designed to combat exactly those two things. Their Sweet Milk and Rose Petal Exfoliate is a dry exfoliator, made with (you guessed it) milk proteins and red rose petals. A little bit of that in the palm of your hand, a few pumps of the cleanser to activate the product, and a 30-second scrub before you get in the shower is all you need

to brighten and freshen your skin. I’ve been using that once or twice a week, and then after the shower while I’m drying off, a three-minute application of their new Herbal Hydration Complex. The gel-cream mask is a boost of botanical moisture. I love that using the two on any given morning doesn’t add any time at all to my regular routine, but leaves me with a fresh face that I feel good about not wearing any makeup on that day. Once a week, I’ve been using the Vassar Rose Perfecting Polish. This is a huge step forward in natural plant technology. The product works the same way the other exfoliate does: a little bit in your hand, mixed with a little bit of the cleanser, and a quick scrub. It sounds simple, but it’s a total game changer. This product basically gives you the equivalent of microdermabrasion, but in your bathroom, and it only takes one minute of your time. I love the results – cell turnover, smaller pores, smoother skin – and I particularly love that I can do it on any given workday morning. It’s the middle of the summer, and I’ve been doing my normal sun worshiping, but you would never know it from how my skin looks. I believe that’s what they call the best of both worlds. I’ll take it.

100 Delicious Years For anything to reach its centennial anniversary is no small accomplishment. This year, Watch Hill’s “famous not fancy” Olympia Tea Room marks the occasion by continuing to serve up classic cuisine that generations have enjoyed. Crispy Chicken Milanese at Olympia Tea Room

So Delicious Review |

By Stacey Place

A Delicious Milestone After 100 years, Olympia Tea Room is as tasty as ever the Olympia Tea Room opened in Watch Hill, located at the heart of the bustling summer resort town. As their menu says, it’s been “famous not fancy” ever since. The restaurant was built to provide meals for tourists arriving from Westerly Station by trolley and staying in the rooming house adjoining the restaurant. The restaurant has survived several major fires and hurricanes. Until 1978, the three Greek Tremis brothers ran the restaurant, but since 1980, Chef Jack and Marcia Felber have been at the helm. Chef Felber is a Culinary Institute of America graduate and still works in the kitchen. His wife, Marcia, creates the artwork displayed in the restaurant and their daughter, Georgia, who is a Court of Masters Certified Master Sommelier, curates the restaurant’s Wine Spectator award-winning wine list. Arriving at the Olympia Tea Room on a cool day, I took the restaurant in and imagined what it would have been like to be a customer there a hundred years ago. Back then, the patrons were undoubtedly dressed better – wearing suits, dresses and hats. Most people today are dressed casually, many coming in from a

walk on the beach or off their boats. The restaurant is cozy with mostly well-worn and historic booths and a few tables available for seating. Additionally, there is a small bar at the back end of the restaurant. The black and white tile floors give the restaurant brightness, as do the windows overlooking Watch Hill Harbor. I really liked how the large mirrors reflected the view of the harbor, so everyone in the restaurant has a view. Toasting to the Olympia’s 100th Anniversary, I started things off with a Watch Hill Mojito ($13). The drink was a perfectly blended concoction of Don Q Cristal Rum, mint, turbinado sugar, fresh lime juice, Pommery Champagne and topped with a Myers Dark Rum floater. I’m a huge mojito fan, and this was among the best I’ve had. It was on the tart side, just the way I like it and served in a pint glass garnished with a stalk of sugar cane and a wedge of lime. My dining guest enjoyed a Flying Jenny Pale Ale ($5.50) from Grey Sail in Westerly. For starters, we were served warm bread accompanied by olive oil and cilantro as well as a jalapeno and white bean dip. The dip

Clam Roast

was mild and a nice addition to the bread service. Since it was a cool day, I ordered a cup of New England Clam Chowder ($6). The consistency of chowder is a funny thing. Some people prefer thick and some prefer it thin. I take the middle of the road, and the chowder here was just that – not too thick and not too thin. It was well seasoned and

contained just enough clams to make me happy. We also sampled the Calamari ($14). At first we balked at the price, but once we saw how big the portion was, we agreed it was well worth it. There was more than enough for the two of us to share, plus have more for leftovers. The calamari was served fried but not breaded and was topped with plenty of hot peppers and a zesty marinara sauce. Seaside restaurants are often judged based on the quality of their lobster roll. If the Lobster Roll ($22) at the Olympia Tea Room is your measure of its quality, the restaurant is top notch. The lobster was fresh and tender with only the bare minimum of mayonnaise and celery used. The lobster salad comes on a warm, buttery croissant and is served with your choice of fries or greens. Of course, we picked the fries, and they were delicious. We also sampled the Fish & Chips ($22). Again, this dish seemed pricy until I saw the enormous piece of fish, so big that it hung off the plate. The scrod was fresh, battered in a yummy ale batter and served with fries and cole slaw. I’m embarrassed to say that as big as the piece of fish was, I ate every bite. It was that good.

I fully intended to skip dessert, but in the interest of my food critic duties I decided to at least look at the dessert menu. When I saw the Avondale Swan ($12), I just couldn’t pass it up. A cream puff filled with ice cream swimming in a pool of hot fudge? Yes, please. It tasted as good as it sounded, and the dish was reminiscent of a profiterole. Everything (pastry shell, ice cream, whipped cream, hot fudge) tasted good on its own, but together I couldn’t help

but smile as I greedily scooped up every last bite. Restaurants that last for 100 years must be doing something right, and I am pleased to report the Olympia Tea Room is doing it all right. As we jump into the summer season, every Rhode Islander should make a stop in to say “Happy anniversary,” grab a cocktail and enjoy the historic atmosphere. Hopefully in another 100 years, a new generation of patrons will be able to enjoy this piece of history.

La Masseria in East Greenwich is named after the fortified old farmhouses of Southern Italy. Everything from the name, the exposed wood in the interior, the wine on display, the chef and, most crucially, the menu is built around the rich tradition of Puglian cuisine. No surprise then that my conversation with General Manager Andrea Minopoli was unmistakably Italian in character as well. Though his accent made the food sound even more appealing, I suspect it didn’t need much help. As connected to our local farmers as it is to its own culinary traditions, La Masseria has an authentic claim on the name. There are two La Masserias, one in Midtown Manhattan and the other in East Greenwich. These locations are just a bit different. What’s the story there? The major owner of the restaurant is from Rhode Island and he used to go to Capri on vacation. [There], he met this guy by the name of Peppe and they became friends and decided to open a place in New York called La Masseria in 2005, and that was the beginning. Because he was from Rhode Island, we decided to open up one in East Greenwich in 2009, too. How did you end up in Rhode Island? I was a manager at La Masseria in New York, and I moved here because of the restaurant in 2009. Plus, my life changed in New York when I met a beautiful lady and decided to get married at the age of 50. That was a better way for me to raise a family, in Rhode Island rather than New York.

BABS handbags

The restaurant identifies as Puglian specifically, rather than just the generic Italian. How does it differ? When people say “an Italian restaurant” it doesn’t really tell you what specialty. Italian food varies so much, and if you really want to cover Italian food, you need five restaurants to do that. We are an Italian

La Masseria in East Greenwich showcases Puglian cuisine

restaurant with a mostly southern Italian influence. We have meat, fish, pasta and all kinds of food to please everybody’s palate. What are some Puglian specialities? We have Baby Octopus with cuttlefish and broccoli rabe (that’s very Pugliese), Orecchiette with broccoli and sausage, Linguini with Clams in a white clam sauce, Branzino, a Mediterranean sea bass from the coast of Puglia, and then we come up with specials. If La Masseria alludes to the stores on a farm, what are your connections to our local farmers? I buy most of it local, like the clams, oysters, lobster and vegetables. I have a good connection with the farmer’s market here in Goddard Park, where I [get] most of my fresh vegetables through the summer, mostly zucchini, zucchini flowers, peppers, potatoes, red beets, heirloom tomatoes and plum tomatoes.

A lot of people speak highly of the desserts at La Masseria. What are some favorites? We do our own desserts, and our number one is the Ricotta Cheesecake. We also have all kinds of flavors of tiramisu, like Nutella, lemon, orange, pineapple and the regular espresso tiramisu. Lately we’ve been making a Pistachio Nut Tartufo, which we’ve been selling a lot of. Is there a dish you are particularly excited about? We have homemade ravioli, three per order, filled with egg, ricotta cheese and fresh herbs with truffle sauce. Once you put the knife and the fork in, the egg goes all over your plate. Tell me about the approach with the wine list? We sell a little bit of everything, but we mostly have wine from all over Italy and a little bit from California. There are about 250 wines on our wine list, and a few off the list. We are offering 25% off any bottle of wine Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and we are more than happy to offer anyone 25% off any bottle of wine.

A trip to the

Ocean House is one of history, opulence and extreme relaxation. It’s also a top-notch foodie destination. In addition to their already stellar restaurants they’ve recently added Below Deck, a delicious gelato, old-fashioned candy and homemade doughnut shop. It’s conveniently located along the walking path to the Ocean House beach, which means that it’s an indoor/outdoor eatery. According to Pastry Chef Oralia Perez, must-try gelato flavors are the Pistachio Amerena Cherry and Coconut and the Pineapple Sorbet. Although gelato is higher in fat than traditional ice cream, it’s well worth the splurge. “When you spin the gelato, there’s less air incorporated in it than ice cream, so it’s more dense,” Chef Oralia explains. “It’s also served differently. Ice cream can be served in an ice cream cone, whereas gelato is typically served with a spade – not a scoop. Below Deck offers waffle cones for guests, but normally you would serve gelato in a cup.” In addition to the eight flavors of gelato, warm sugared doughnuts are handmade and fried the old fashioned way, in small batches with care. So Approved Taffy’s All Grown Up Remember the taffy of our youth? It hurt our teeth, and was so sweet that even our younger selves wanted nothing to do with it. Just as humans learn and grow, so too does taffy, it would seem, and these taffys far exceeded our expectations. –Grace Lentini

Nana’s Gelato and Ice Cream has the kind of taffy that you take a bite of and it just keeps stretching. They also taste just as they’re supposed to, like the cotton candy that reminded us of being at a carnival. 28A Pier Market Place, Narragansett. 500-1900, www.NanasGelato.com

Subtly Sweet The stretchy, and very shareable, salt water taffy from The Newport Fudgery really highlighted fruit and mint flavors. The peppermint reminded us of a refreshing peppermint candy, and the fruit flavors were never too sweet or overpowering. 168 and 359 Thames Street, Newport. 8492228, www.NewportFudgery.com

Like Fluffy Pillows It’s not too often taffy is described as pillowy, but the ones from Sweenor’s Chocolates sure were. Unlike their stretchy counterparts, these were subtly sweet and made us think that this is what clouds must taste like. 21 Charles Street, Wakefield. 783-4433, www.SweenorsChocolates.com

Fruity and Juicy Bursting with juicy flavors that made our mouths water, the salt water taffy from Sweet Twist had all the childhood flavors of penny store candy. From sour to sweet, these chewy delights were also easy on our teeth. 5707 Post Road, East Greenwich. 885-7579, www.SweetTwist.com
