I am writing to you in reference to your most recent article written by Rebecca Remillard [“Ocean Blue,” July 2012]. It was a great article overall, but there are glaring errors in it that need to be corrected. The errors I am referring to are in the paragraphs describing Wild Rhody. I am the current general manager of Wild Rhody and had these errors brought to my attention. Back in January, the Elizabeth Helen sunk. The captain and owner of that boat was Steve Arnold, not Chris Brown. Captain Chris Brown and the Proud Mary are very much still floating and fishing. In fact, captain Chris Brown took on the full work load, supplying the restaurant

chefs with their desired species while Steve was recovering from his loss. Steve Arnold is now fishing on the Sea Breeze II. Swap ‘Til You Drop Imagine a world where cleaning out your closet meant putting a hot meal in the hands of a homeless person. Elizabeth Hazard’s Swap & Shop For Charity proves it’s not only possible, but also a whole lot of fun. Based on the philosophy of recycling and reusing, Swap & Shop For Charity offers opportunities for individuals to swap clothes with friends to benefit their favorite charity. An individual contacts Hazard, and she then sends out invitations asking guests to donate old clothes before the event. Using her eye for design and those donated clothes, Hazard transforms the host’s chosen venue into something

resembling an actual retail store. “Guests are given a piece of paper with categories,” says Hazard. “Those categories determine how much an individual believes a piece of clothing is worth. People determine their own price, and all proceeds go to the host’s charity of choice.” Hazard takes with her all excess clothing not sold during the swap, using them for the next swap. “Everyone agrees the swaps are a blast,” says Hazard. “People get so excited. Lap of Luxury Sip, shop and sunbathe at Langworthy Farm Winery From your perch atop an elevated deck, you spy row upon row of grapevines, stretching as far back as your eyes can see and seemingly calling you to come closer and explore. It’s summertime at Langworthy Farm and the perfect time to swing through for a bit of wine after a trip to Misquamicut or another of the nearby beaches. There’s not much that is as relaxing and refreshing as indulging in a cold glass of white, with friends, as the sun warms your face. The winery has been open since 2004 after the owners of Langworthy Farm Bed and Breakfast noticed that the farm’s close proximity to the ocean created an ideal grape growing environment. Owners Joe and Gail Sharry began experimenting with wine making as they waited to receive their operational license. In spring of 2005, they opened

to the public for tastings; in 2006, their winery and tasting room opened. The winery is now open for tastings everyday from noon-5pm through Labor Day. The cost is $7-10 (depending on the size of the glass you choose), which buys you a sampling of five wines and the souvenir stemwear. Stop by on August 18 and 19 for an Art Festival on the Lawn, featuring work for sale by over 10 area artists belonging to the Westerly Cooperative Art Gallery. This is the first time that the winery is hosting this event and Joe tells me it’s sure to be an enjoyable day for all involved. “Guests can feel free to purchase a bottle of wine and take it outside to enjoy,” he says. A Fisherman’s Tale The locals know what visitors soon discover: Jamestown has its own Fishing Hall of Fame, complete with rock star angler Greg Zeke. For 27 years, Greg Zeke, a commercial fisherman and owner of Zeke’s Creek Seafood Market and Bait and Tackle Shop, has been wrapping fresh fish for Jamestown dinner tables while doling out advice to the Jamestown anglers who take a DIY approach to supper. He says, ‘Come here. You gotta come here.’ When I looked back at the cliff, where the cliff comes down to meet the beach, the fish was laying there. Registration is open for the 4th annual ride ‘round rhody bike-a-thon, a one-day event held in Wakefield on August 12 to raise funds for cancer awareness and treatment at area

This year, the goal is to raise $50,000; LIFEcycle, Inc., the non-profit behind the event, anticipates a turnout of 125 riders. The event is suitable for the casual rider to the advanced cyclist as this year’s ride offers three options to choose from – 25, 50 and 75 mile rides, along scenic roads and finishing at Camp JORI in Wakefield. Threshold Cycling, an amateur cycling team from Boston, will be offering support along the ride. Registration is $85 through July 31; day of registration is available for $180 per rider. All riders receive a custom three-pocket zippered cycling jersey to be worn during the ride and kept as a souvenir, along with a water bottle and cinch bag. Riders are encouraged to set a goal of $250 or more, and are expected to raise at least $100. Teams can compete this year as well, with top teams being honored with a donation made in their name to a local cancer center,

Green Pets Pamper your four-legged family members with gourmet, organic foods By Dale Rappaneau Many of us understand

the habits for living a healthy lifestyle: exercise, fruits and veggies, sleep and socialization. These concepts have been drilled into us since elementary school. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), though, there’s another habit that may lead to a healthier life – owning a pet. As stated on the CDC’s website, the health benefits of owning a pet include the decrease of “blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness,” in addition to increasing opportunities for “exercise and outdoors activities” and “socialization.” As many pet owners will tell you, nothing wipes away a day’s woes like the welcoming face of a pet. But the bond between owner and pet goes deeper than health benefits. Pets become family, their pictures hanging on walls or hidden in wallets. We name them, love them, and cuddle with them for comfort, which is why taking care of a pet’s health is as important as taking care of our own health. Read over the label of your current dog or cat food product. More often than not, the ingredients list includes a meat-based “meal,” a marketing term similar to “processed.” To live a healthy life, pets require natural ingredients, the same as you and me,

and numerous Rhode Island companies now cater to selling or creating these kind of gourmet or organic products.

Sharyn Iannuccilli grows organic bounty to feed her family The first time city girl Sharyn Iannuccilli saw a backyard garden was when she met her now-husband’s family for the first time. Soon after the couple said “I do,” she was inspired to sow her own seeds. “I married an Italian, so I started with tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, naturally,” she says with a laugh. Forty years, three children and three grandchildren later, Sharyn tends to her thriving vegetable garden in East Greenwich that feeds the family and pleases the health-conscious green thumb. It’s difficult to know the source of a majority of store-bought vegetables, she explains, and by growing her own bounty, she can ensure that seeds haven’t been altered and her crop is 100% organic. “This way you know,” she explains. While the trio she first planted remains part of the crop, Sharyn says she likes “the challenge of growing unusual fruits and vegetables,” including fennel, artichokes, grapes and more. The yield is enough to serve healthy and fresh meals to her loved ones regularly. “I have 10 for dinner every Sunday and we eat right out of the garden,” she says, beaming.

It wasn’t until after she retired that Sharyn expanded her flowering gardens, which now separate varying areas of the one-acre expanse. “I created ‘rooms’ all divided by perennials beds,” she explains. One space is a water garden built by her son as a thank you gift for putting him through medical school – a special and sentimental space. Sharyn offers sage advice to newcomers. “Start slow; don’t overwhelm yourself,” she explains. Sharyn started simply and worked her way up to the URI Master Gardener Program. “Perfect what you’re doing and build on that. Don’t get frustrated because we all make mistakes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve moved plants in my yard,” she adds. Recently, Sharyn shared picking strawberries with her three-year-old granddaughter. “I thought that is how she can start and learn. She loves it.” For Sharyn, being in the garden feels like home, offering an enviable serenity she says can be shared by both experienced gardeners and novices alike. “There’s no place I’d rather be.”

Hilltop Paradise

Carlotta Parsons’s Jamestown garden capitalizes on scenic vistas When Carlotta Parsons first

arrived in Jamestown eight years ago, her new husband’s property was a welcoming place that offered stunning but obstructed views. “The first thing that struck me was looking out to a wall of bush,” she says. “As you drive up the driveway, you see the water. We’re up high and we overlook the entrance to Narragansett Bay, across to Castle Hill, and out to Block Island.” But the trio of enviable vistas were stymied with an abundance of overgrown trees and bushes. It was clear the landscaping was there but hadn’t been tended to, and as plants in fertile soil tend to do when in idyllic conditions, they overtook the property. “Our first order of business was to move holly bushes from the garden over to the property line by the driveway – they were too big for that site,” she says. A dwarf blue spruce, which Carlotta says wasn’t very dwarf anymore, was compromising the views, so it was also relocated to open the space. “[It] is now thriving in its new location,” she says. “It was hiding a very beautiful rock,” which is now a focal point of one of the couple’s abundant gardens. In fact, indigenous rock can be found

throughout the gardens – as walking stones, borders and visual interest. “No rocks were moved there,” she says. “They’re part of the natural topography of the land.” Though digging in the dirt became de rigeur, the couple didn’t go it alone. They sought the wisdom of talented local green thumbs Mike Yarworth and Jane Case. Jane owns Blue Moon Farm Perennials in Wakefield, a stunning expanse as colorful as it is captivating. “She started that from next to nothing and has made it beautiful,” says Carlotta. As the couple have experienced, their plentiful garden welcomes as many compliments as it does evasive, hungry critters. “We have had a huge challenge in keeping the deer from eating all the new growth in the garden,” says Carlotta. She’s curbing the issue safely by using American Deer Proofing spray on a regular basis. “As the new buds emerge, I can spray them. We have had huge success, and the deer now walk through our property avoiding the flower garden.” For Carlotta, the garden brings peace and pleasure. “I get so excited working out there. I love it. I love digging and planting; it’s a joy for me.”

URI Master Gardener Martha MacBurnie provides inspiration to aspiring green thumbs For hundreds of garden

enthusiasts, the opportunity to explore the sprawling expanse that URI Master Gardener Martha MacBurnie has tended over the past 12 years was one that couldn’t be passed up. So on the 2008 Gardening With the Masters Garden Tour, more than 750 green thumbs showed up to take in her 100 different kinds of daylilies, 30 kinds of irises, dozen-and-ahalf kinds of hydrangea, robust vegetable and cutting gardens and hundreds more eye-popping plants. Martha concedes her Wakefield garden has been a labor of love. “Real gardeners don’t mind doing some work,” she laughs. When she and her husband Bob Baxter first moved to the property from Connecticut, they knew they had their work cut out for them. While the house and surrounding grounds were in fine condition, the two had a vision: The interior renovation would include knocking down walls and rearranging spaces to achieve a more updated open floor plan. The exterior would include an extensive brick patio surrounding the pool and offer an outdoor living space that would take advantage of the bounteous gardens. Since that was the plan, it was time for Martha to get going. At the time, Bob traveled frequently, and the garden became Martha’s domain. “Every

time [he] went on a business trip, I’d take up chunks and chunks of lawn,” she says. “There was quite a bit of work. There were truck loads and truck loads of compost.” The compost was fundamental to a prosperous and longlasting garden, as Martha stresses the importance of good, healthy soil. “The best thing I can say is just keep feeding your soil. Get it tested and the soil will feed your plants. The more you feed things, the stronger they’ll be.” Martha is a proud member of the South County Garden Club and both she and her husband belong to the RI Wild Plant Society. She says the society’s annual June plant sale is a wonderful place to buy plants. Martha starts all of her plants from seed as early as February and has planned out her garden so that plants bloom from the time the final snow melts through the end of the year (“It’s spectacular!” she swoons). As one of her specialties as a master gardener is non-toxic pest control, Martha’s garden is both organic and sustainable. For aspiring green thumbs, Martha offers some advice. Give plants and flowers the amount of space they need (if the instructions call for 8” apart, plant them 8” apart). Prep the soil well. If you’re on a budget, start small and work in concentric circles around your starting point, and look for local nursery sales and online growers for a bargain.

Dirty Knees and Dungarees

Betty Pearce has been tending her plot for 35 wonderful years Westerly is known for

the flowing beauty at Wilcox Park, but many locals equally admire the gardens of Betty and Dan Pearce. More than 35 years ago, the couple moved to their home, which was warm and welcoming on the inside, but considerably lacking on the outside. While overgrown plants, shrubs and trees peppered the grounds, the couple saw heaps of potential; soon Betty was clearing the grounds and starting the property’s new chapter with fresh perennial beds. “We knew the yard needed work,” she explains. “The beds evolved very slowly. The trees and numerous things weren’t healthy.” Multiple gardens have emerged slowly but surely. “This evolved year after year,” Betty tells me, adding that while growing up, she carefully watched her own mother on the limited occasions she gardened. After Betty married and started her own home, she says gardening came calling. With quiet determination and abundant patience, Betty’s gardens grew in both size and stature. “My garden is trial and error, and trust me, I have made a lot of errors,” she says with a laugh. Healthy soil is imperative, she says, and moving plants around until they find their “happy place” will take time. While the garden was Betty’s domain

for decades, it wasn’t until her husband retired that his curiosity got the best of him, and he soon began to share Betty’s passion. A friend had gifted the couple with a sign, “Pearce’s Park,” a nod to their hard work and expanding colorful landscapes. “He said we were competing with Wilcox Park,” Betty says, smiling. A vegetable garden flourishes this time of year, and a bog garden featuring moisture-loving plants adds a unique dimension, but the garden the couple is most excited about is one they developed a few short years ago on the west side of the property. “Literally, my husband and I were on our hands and knees clearing the stones and roots,” Betty says, her voice stressing their hard work. “It was a labor of love.” An oversized rock, uncovered from below the surface, has become the focal point. The garden itself has taken a lot of careful planning and ongoing attention, whereas others on the property have self-propagated. With all of their careful attention, the Pearce’s property has been designated a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, and after years of hoping, the couple welcomed bluebirds this year. “Dirty knees on my dungarees,” she says. “It’s what you get from Mother Earth.”

Landscaper Jeff Farrell keeps Sunset Farm looking its best When you own a

landscape company bearing your name, there’s just a little bit of pressure to have gardens and grounds that reflect your capabilities. When Jeff Farrell of Narragansettbased Farrell Landscaping and his wife Susan first moved to historic Sunset Farm at Kinney Bungalow, he admits there was nothing there but grass in the yard – something they vowed to change as soon as possible. “We’ve been working on it for 12 years,” he says. “We started with the patio and we landscaped around it.” Managed by the Narragansett Land Conservancy Trust, Kinney Bungalow and Sunset Farm serve as a popular location for events and gatherings including weddings, community affairs and more. Built in 1899 by a tobacco and real estate mogul, the property’s history is a lauded one, and the Farrells have started a new, more beautiful chapter as the farm’s caretakers. Those who subscribe to a “go big or go home” ethos will appreciate Jeff’s lot. Five thousand tomato plants are in their glory right about now (and for sale at the farm’s stand), and everyone from chefs to moms who love serving dishes featuring fresh, delicious ingre-

dients are lining up to enjoy the bounty. “Heirloom, standard, hybrid, plum, grape, yellow…” Jeff trails off, mentioning just a few of the varieties ripened to South County perfection. In fact, he says, the temperature in this part of the state can be beneficial to plants. “Here by the ocean, we don’t get a frost,” he explains. But that doesn’t mean it’s always idyllic. “A storm can bring a blight with it… You have to stay on it. The biggest thing is fungus; you have to keep up the fungicide,” he explains. High tunnel greenhouses, unheated greenhouses that act as a growing shelter for the tomatoes, extend their growing season. Nutrient-rich compost can also be found throughout the garden, helping plants to stay strong and healthy. Arguably, the most iconic plants on the property are the colossal hydrangeas, which not only captivate visitors to the farm, but serve as the backdrop for the many couples who wed at Kinney Bungalow. Before you try and imitate the look, know that the plants don’t require much maintenance, but they do demand patience. “It takes time,” Jeff says. “You just don’t get seven-foot hydrangeas the first year.” August 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

I swear almost every

bit of me loves the summer in Rhode Island. All of me but my skin, that is. From the additional sweating (really, another heat wave?), sun exposure and the yucky but obligatory sunscreen, my face is acting all manic. The sun is causing it to be dry and lifeless, while the sweat and SPF is causing me to break out like a teenager in line for a Justin Bieber concert. So while everyone I know is chasing the anything but healthy “glow” of a suntan, I booked an appointment for a facial at 360 Face Mind Body. I had heard that the spa, which opened in February, was ideal for sensitive skin like mine. For most of my life, I’ve battled one skin issue after another: extreme dry patches, adult acne, red blotches, other unpredictable flare-ups. Trying new products is a no-no. I have three or four cosmetic brands that I stick with, and pretty much let the beauty gods determine the rest. As I walked into 360 I noticed a sign describing the location as “healthconscious skin care.” How apropos, I thought, as my seasonal lifestyle choices were clearly affecting my skin. Michelle Maynard, owner and licensed esthetician, greeted me as I entered the intimate and relaxing space. She gave me a quick tour, pointing out the all-natural cosmetic and skincare products she has available for sale, such as Jane Iredale and Rhode Island-based Farmaesthetics. “They are non-toxic, plant-based products that are optimal for sensitive skin,” she explained. “And I’ve tried them all. I personally stand behind each product here.” Michelle, who has the most amazing skin, admitted that she struggled with her skin most of her life. Much like me, she went from product to product, never truly satisfied with the results. Once she found that an all-natural beauty routine worked for her, she became so passionate about her findings that she left her career in insurance to train with renowned experts in the skincare industry. How did your interest in shoes begin? After college, my then boyfriend was anxious to open his own business. Shoes happened to be at the top of the Internet search result list. I have always had the calling for fashion. How did KC Shoes develop once you found the idea? Stepping into Graphic Expressions, it’s hard to not feel pride for our home state. The walls are filled with t-shirts sporting town names such as Saunderstown, Chariho, Exeter, East Matunuck and Block Island, along with phrases like “Welcome to South County.” Sweatpants with “Kingston” proudly printed down the side are held on a stand and toddler-sized tops bearing drawings of beaches are stacked on tables. Blank hats, aprons and jackets accompany every type of t-shirt you can imagine, ready to be printed to your taste. “Our niche is that you can get things here that you can’t find elsewhere,” says owner Wayne Cahoone, telling me about open-bottom sweatshirts and full-zip hoodies. We met at the counter, behind which piles and piles of fabrics await decoration and a designer is hard at work on the computer, fiddling with words in the shape of a lightbulb. I can’t help but let my eyes wander around the walls, which are covered in quotations – wise words from Eleanor Roosevelt, Buddha, Voltaire, Mark Twain, Martin Luther King Jr. and, my personal favorite, a large quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson right next to

the front door. Both bright and classic colored clothing is spread over every other free space. While he does serve some tourists, Wayne does not target this easy crowd; his main customers are the locals. Proof of this lies in shirts with names such as Bonnet Shores, Green Hill and Snug Harbor, places only a true Rhode Islander would know. Still, he tells me the most popular items are his Narragansett gear. “But, as long as you have a computer file, we can print it,” Wayne says. Digital printing can be done in as quickly as 15 minutes – perfect for those lastminute gifts and more personal than a Dunkin Donuts gift card. There are even tiny shirts tailored for pets. The majority of his business comes from bulk orders, though. He supplies the t-shirts for Alan Shawn Feinstein’s “Feinstein Junior Scholar” program, which serves around 150 schools, and he also contributes to the URI bookstore and organizations at Brown University. It’s no surprise that Wayne Cahoone is a Rhode Islander throughand-through. He tells me that his family came here in the 1660s and were among the original settlers on Block Island. Wayne was born in Wakefield

and grew up on Point Judith, later joining the Narragansett Fire Department. About 20 years ago, he retired and opened Graphic Expressions in the basement of Wakefield’s Sweenor’s Chocolates. In 1999, he bought the block of buildings where Graphic Expressions is now located. Standing in his office, he can see that same house he was born in through the window. I’m led downstairs, where five workers are stationed and a large heat press rotates in a circle, churning out up to 700 pieces an hour. I walk by large boards, tables, boxes and the smaller manual press to the next room, where the embroiderer is hard at work. Spools of colored thread fill the walls and poster boards are piled on the next table, where custom signs are made. Graphic Expressions is a factory and retail store all-in-one. Complex sewing machines and heat presses are consistently at work downstairs, while customers are met with enthusiasm at the storefront upstairs. Like many couples, Jessica and Nino Granatiero looked at their growing family one day and realized they had simply outgrown their space. With their thriving wine shop, The Savory Grape, in the heart of downtown East Greenwich, the couple was hoping to find a new home nearby. What they found wasn’t exactly their dream home, but together they saw immense potential. “We stumbled upon it,” explains Jessica. “It was a foreclosure and had good bones, but needed some TLC.” Over the course of the past three years, the couple functionally gutted the entire house. “We had our own vision of how we wanted it,” Jessica says. She describes Nino as very handy, crediting him with doing much of the work himself, but the two busy business owners turned to local pro-

fessionals to execute their vision. As they often host winemakers from around the country and entertain regularly, the two wanted a home that flowed well, had open spaces and could accommodate multiple seating vignettes. Arguably, the phase that received the most attention was the kitchen and dining room remodel. The two spaces flow interchangeably and it’s where the family spends much of their time. The Granatieros turned to Audrey Anderson of Apex Kitchens & Baths in Middletown to create a space that was not only warm and inviting, but smart and efficient. “She is awesome!” gushes Jessica. “I’m not kidding you. We met with her, we told her what we wanted and she came up with the design. She is so meticulous.” Jessica adds that while she

and Nino came to Apex armed with a good idea of what they were looking for, Audrey considered elements they hadn’t considered, including amenities to streamline the cooking process and keep the space well-organized. Jessica says Nino is an excellent at-home chef and enjoys dishing up amazing cuisine when time allows, so the two chose Wolf cooking appliances featuring advanced technology and sleek design from Wickford Appliance & Lighting in North Kingstown. “When we were designing the kitchen and trying to decide on the range, we spoke to a customer who was a chef,” says Jessica, adding that the chef gave the couple some fantastic brand and style recommendations. Kitchen features include a double oven and a warming drawer that has proved much more useful than Jes-

sica ever thought. “You can just throw French toast in there for the kids,” she says with a laugh, adding that working a lot of nights, the drawer comes in handy as the couple doesn’t always finish the day at the same time. Naturally, as wine shop owners, the Granatieros included one more important piece of equipment the kitchen would have been incomplete without. “We have a wine cooler in the kitchen,” says Jessica. “It’s a smaller size and we use that mainly for wines we use every day. We have an area downstairs we’re going to be building out for a wine cellar,” she adds, saying they’ll be working with the same builder who created The Savory Grape structures. owners themselves, Jessica and Nino said it only made sense to support local businesses throughout the project. “We’re local; that is what makes our economy run,” she points out. The centerpiece of the dining room is an oversized rustic farm table from Pottery Barn that the couple adores and uses frequently. A dark wood hutch complements the style and was found in the most unlikely of places. “We acquired it three years ago at a little shop in Portland, Maine; it looks like it belongs in a farmhouse,” she says. In fact, most of the furniture in the house is a harmonious blend of store-bought, antique and sentimental pieces. In their four and-a-half year old daughter’s room is a wood rocking chair, an old gem among pink and brown accents and pastel yellow walls. “She’s your typical kid – very into princesses... princess outfits everywhere, photographs of all of us. It’s definitely playful but also in some regards, very

traditional.” Another daughter’s room features a bed that once belonged to Jessica’s mother. “We’re not cookie cutter,” is how Jessica describes their furnishings approach. “We were very involved. We knew what we wanted and have that design capability,” Jessica says about the entire process. “Nino and I are very casual people in our style. Our house is not formal… I guess you could say ‘sophisticated casual.’” Now that the interior is done, the couple is putting the finishing touches on their landscape design. They have also started a new venture born from their experience at The Savory Grape: The Savory Affair Event Planning and Design. “We do a lot of different events and things started to morph naturally with menu planning and organizing, advice on venues and more,” she says. “We’re really excited.” Not only will The Savory Affair manage corporate events and

weddings, but they will be organizing wine trips and related events as well. Later this month, Jessica will be leading group of 10 to Napa Valley, an experience built on the relationships the Granatieros have developed through the years as successful wine shop owners. The group will experience VIP wine tours, meet wellknown wine makers and experience Napa with an experienced wine connoisseur. Closer to home, wine aficionados can join local winery outings, including a trip at the end of the month to Jonathan Edwards Winery in in North Stonington, Connecticut. “We plan the whole trip from the food to a catered lunch in the vineyard with the winemaker himself,” says Jessica, “It’s been busy but fun.”

Rise and Shine An early morning discovery in Narragansett For the past few

years, I’ve been driving by Riptides, the quaint restaurant inside the Grinnell Inn in Narragansett, and it always caught my eye. The colorful flowers and tables for two on the wraparound porch are lovely and tempted me to stop so many times. But there was always something that prevented me from checking it out, until now. Under the threat of an early morning rain, we ducked inside and were surprised with the size of the dining room – quite large. The L-shaped counter offers eight stools, and there’s even a bakery on the premises if you want to grab and go. The young staff welcomed us warmly to Riptides. “Sit anywhere you like,” said one pretty girl with a ponytail. We grabbed a spacious table in the heart of the dining room. We asked for coffee while we studied the extensive breakfast menu, and huge cups of java quickly arrived. All the basics are on one side of the laminated menu, while the other side offers the specials. And, what specials. I immediately started planning a return trip so that I could try the really interesting dishes. On this maiden visit, I went with a real southern dish, a single egg over easy with home fries and plenty of sausage gravy served atop a flaky biscuit. The egg was cooked perfectly, and I found it impossible to eat just a few of the golden brown chunks of tender potato. The sausage gravy and the biscuit are what made this dish “southern” – a specialty I’ve experienced in the deep South, on road trips from Tennessee down through Alabama. So I can scratch Riptides off my culinary bucket list. But I’ll be back there real soon, I hope. Let’s see… I definitely want to try the Breakfast Burrito, but the chicken and waffles will have to come first. Ever since I saw the Mildred Pierce mini-series on HBO, I’ve been craving that unusual dish. GET UP, GET OUT The Charlestown Seafood Festival will start shucking quahogs at noon on Friday, August 3, and plenty of clam chowder will be simmering all weekend at Ninigret Park. Sponsored by the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce, this rain-or-shine event is a gastronomic feast, especially when it comes to local seafood. The cost is $8, with children

On the other side of the street, the sorely missed Jigger’s Diner is undergoing renovations. With one of the best ocean views around, Amalfi has reopened at the Village Inn, 1 Beach Street, across from Narragansett Town Beach. The Indian cuisine of the previous restaurant has been replaced with pub fare and seafood. In Wickford, Stu Tucker has added the Quahog Emporium to his list of local businesses. Located next door to the Wickford Diner on Brown Street, the new store will offer food and all sorts of things, such as jewelry, with a quahog theme. Bliss Coffee House has opened at 12 Stilson Road in Richmond. With outdoor seating, this small shop gets raves for its iced spice chai and biscotti. Henry’s Fruit recently opened at 5319 Old Post Road in Charlestown. Check out Henry’s Facebook page for what’s available from day to day – freshly picked corn, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, freshly baked pies and cookies, and that perfect beach food, fresh fruit. David Fonte is the new executive chef at Grille on Main, 50 Main Street, East Greenwich. Previously he worked for celebrity chef Todd English in Boston. Froyo Fix has opened in the Salt Pond Shopping Center in Narragansett, offering 10 different flavors of frozen yogurt and more than 70 toppings at a self-serve toppings bar. A Tropical Evening to benefit the Matty Fund, which raises money for children and families living with epilepsy, is scheduled for August 25 from 6 to 11pm. Inspired Cuisine Magnificent food abounds at this Westerly establishment

achieved its goal – I wanted more. (By the way, David informed us that the night before none other than Regis Philbin had dinner at Ella’s, in the very booth in which we were sitting.) Another sign that this is an extraordinary restaurant is the offering of foie gras on the appetizer menu. At Ella’s, it’s Foie Gras Two Ways ($18), with the precious duck liver served in the usual seared manner and as the key flavor ingredient in a savory crème brulée, along with buttery toasted brioche and blueberry jelly. It was the blueberry jelly that swayed me. I rarely pass up the chance to have foie gras, but the price always makes me hesitate. At least at Ella’s, you do get your money’s worth. The seared foie gras was a generous serving, and it paired beautifully with the sweet jelly. The big surprise was the petite ramekin of foie gras-flavored brulée. What an amazing concept. I scraped that ramekin clean of every creamy bite. On the other side of our spacious table landed Ella’s Salad ($6), another winning first course. Certainly enough for two to share, the finely shredded greens consisted of arugula, watercress and iceberg lettuce mixed well with bits of tomato, avocado and blue cheese, with a very subtle whole grain mustard vinaigrette. There are plenty of entrees for your consideration. I would call the menu New American, created by a classically trained chef. It’s an interesting mix of New England seafood, French cuisine, Southern home cooking, some Italian dishes and several Asianinspired offerings. Our dinner was decidedly all American.

Pork Belly Taco

I don’t believe I’ve ever written this before, but the Pan-Seared Halibut ($30) with the lobster hash browns was one of the very best dishes I’ve ever had, and I’ve been reviewing restaurants for almost 30 years. The moist halibut was draped over the delicious hash browns that contained pieces of lobster. On the side were dainty stalks of asparagus. What made this dish so appealing was the fresh herb sauce – just buttery enough. I made sure to dip every bite of food into that wonderful sauce. It doesn’t get more American than steak and potatoes, especially when it’s served with a bourbon-veal reduction and bacon onion jam. The menu promised a seven-ounce all-natural Filet Mignon ($25), but it sure looked like more than seven ounces. Cooked to that ideal state of medium, medium rare, the filet was surrounded with well-browned fingerling potatoes. Haricot verts fancied up the plate. The menu also read: “finished with fresh grated horseradish,” which we asked to do without – that would have been flavor overkill. The sweet ending to this remarkable dinner was right in step with all that came before it. The light texture of the Ella’s Cheesecake ($8) was almost

fluffy, and it was easy to consume the entire serving with its dark chocolate crust, topped with fresh blueberries and whipped cream. Deserving even more superlatives was the Just Chocolate dessert ($10), an impossible-to-resist combination of dark chocolate on top of dark chocolate, from the cake to the mousse to the sauce, all showered with shavings of white chocolate. Like the amuse bouche at the start of our dinner, this tiny morsel of sweetness was a final show that Ella’s is indeed a magnificent restaurant. I have a friend who often uses the word “magnificent” to describe everything from the Chrysler 300 to the dinner he had last night. I usually refrain from such hyperbole, but I believe I’ve found a restaurant worthy of such praise. Ella’s Fine Food & Drink in Westerly is only three months old, but chef-owner Jeanie Roland is turning out beautifully crafted food that any venerable restaurant would envy. This is not surprising – she has been nominated five times for a prestigious James Beard Foundation Award from her days at The Perfect Caper in Punta Gorda, Florida. At the busy intersection of Tower, Ward and Granite, the location is unpretentious – an old brick building, which has been home to an array of restaurants over the decades, most notably Capizzano’s. For many years, the chef there was a woman named Ella, and this latest incarnation is in homage to her. The new interior is quietly sophisticated, in shades of gray with black accents. Tucked into a corner is the dimly lit lounge, offering a separate and intriguing menu. But, those Lobster Tempura and Pulled Asian Brisket sandwiches will have to wait for my return visit, and surely there will be one. I knew we were in for an extraordinary night of dining when our immensely likeable waiter, David, brought us an amuse bouche from the chef. Only the finest restaurants make this culinary gesture, a small bite of food that lets you know this is indeed a very special restaurant. On this particular Sunday night, it was a smoked salmon mousse canapé, the base of which was a cracker that melted the instant it landed on my tongue. It definitely

Wild Life It’s said that if

you love something you should stick with it, and few people have put that advice to work as consistently over the course of their lifetime as South Kingstown artist Julia Riordan Scherer. From the time she was a preschooler, Julia always had two main passions: art and animals. “Animals, children and old people are what I like, but I don’t paint children or old people,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve tried to paint something else, but it always turns into animals,” pointing out one painting that morphed, Transformers-like, from a drawing of a flower into “Proud Peacock,” one of about 24 works she sells to the public on her Animal Art website. Julia began taking painting classes at age four, and was soon filling notebooks with drawings of elephants, birds and other creatures – often where her teachers expected to find math problems being solved or essays written. “I was in my own little world,” says this self-described “terrible student” who nonetheless would go on to become an educator in Cranston, teaching art to middle and high school students. “I knew from a young age that I wanted to become an art teacher – I just had to get through school to do it.” Julia found teaching rewarding despite the constraint of having to work from a syllabus, and continued to share her gift with children even when she left the Cranston schools five years ago when her son was born. Her husband, Jared, built her a studio in the basement of their home, and soon Julia was tutor-

ing home-school students in a space where not just easels but the walls and floors are covered in paint. All the while, Julia continued drawing her animals, usually giving away her large-format paintings of elephants, giraffes, bunnies and other creatures to friends and neighbors. “Almost every person I know has one now,” she says, especially friends with children who find Julia’s work a bright, friendly and whimsical addition to their nurseries or kids’ rooms. Considering that no people appear in her works, each is deeply personal to Julia. A painting of sheep in a field, for example, is named for her daughter. “Mama and Her Sponge,” a painting of a baby giraffe nuzzling its mother, refers to Julia’s son, who she calls her “sponge of love.” “I did that painting when I was nine months pregnant,” she explains. “It was the last time I was solely me.” Yet Julia’s works are not her “babies.” In fact, she’ll frequently paint over her originals – not that she doesn’t like them, but because she loves the textures the technique imparts on the new works. And, while most artists abhor the idea of people buying their paintings because the colors happen to match the walls of their homes, Julia actually sells monochromatic prints to meet that precise desire. “I love painting but I never wanted to profit from it,” she says. “I’d much rather have the old lady down the street say, ‘I think about you every day because I have your painting in my kitchen.’” That generous attitude made Jared

a bit leery when Julia decided to stop tutoring and start making a living selling her artwork. But with the help of some web-savvy friends, Julia soon had an online store up and running, and a supplier in North Carolina who produces, packages and ships her framed and matted giclee prints (produced on inkjet printers) to customers all over the world. In an unexpected boost of commercial success, the art director of the movie Spy Kids 4 bought four of her paintings and used them to decorate a nursery in the film. Julia’s originals are big - 24x36 or 28x28 - but customers can buy 11x14 or 11x18 reproductions for about $2535, and nursery-friendly low VOC (volatile organic compound) giclee prints for around $60. The artist has even developed a little ambition: “I want to have everyone learn my name and want one of my paintings,” she says. The artist who as a girl walked the streets of Chariho with her four-foot pet iguana on a leash also donates a portion of her income to the ASPCA. Ideas for new paintings now pop into her head when she’s reading a book to her son or rocking her daughter to sleep. “My creatures have multiplied since my kids were born,” she says. For Julia, painting isn’t just part of life – it’s a necessity. “Painting is my music. I’m not thinking when I’m painting,” she says. “I’ll go a month where I don’t know what I’m painting next, then when I do know, I’m painting every day. bundles of spinach, dough and (depending on the vendor) added bits of cheese, olives or pepperoni. This month we tested four local pies. It was difficult to choose a winner; each was quite different but incredibly delicious. Go on, try them all.

These spinach pies were Greek-style, meaning that instead of fluffy pizza dough, the spinach was contained within thin layers of flaky phyllo dough. Each pie was bursting with flavor: We tasted olive oil, egg, onions, garlic, and a mixture of ricotta and feta cheeses. PD’s Pizza Pier Pizza First off, we were blown away by the generous portions of these calzone-like spinach pies. With lots of soft, fluffy dough and moist spinach filling, our staffers raved over the generous amounts of ricotta cheese that we tasted. These spinach pies looked like puffy baked apple pies at first glance, with their nicely browned crusts just begging to be torn into. Once we did, we unearthed moist spinach, tomato and pepperoni. Calvitto’s Pizza and Bakery This was the most traditional of all the spinach pies, with just two main ingredients: dough and spinach. It was light, clean and refreshing.
