Amanda Grosvenor Writer A Newport native, Amanda Grosvenor writes the Arts column for So Rhode Island, covering all major arts events and exhibitions in South County. Amanda has a deep appreciation for Rhode Island’s commitment to creativity. “One thing I love about Rhode Island is how creative our population is, how many small businesses there are here and how much spirit and pride we have in such a small state,” she says. Reading and writing are Amanda’s lifelong passions; she started keeping a journal at six years old and went on to study English literature. Her family is well known in the South County arts scene. Her grandfather, Richard Grosvenor, is a locally well known painter and her mother composes music.

Well, you could stay home. But what if you need health services? Our nurses, physical and occupational therapists provide professional and personal care, while you recouperate in less stressful, more familiar surroundings.
Summer Sipping Let’s take a moment to discuss my favorite thing: cocktails on the deck. Call me old fashioned… wait, no, call my drink an Old Fashioned, and serve it to me in an Adirondack chair, preferably one overlooking the water. In the summer, there’s no better moment than that. But if you’re in the mood for a happy hour tipple, you don’t have a lot of time to waste wondering where you should go. That’s where we come in. This month, So Rhode Island has done all of the hard work for you,
will you go for rehab services after surgery?

Last month we shared our 2014 article about RI’s lesser known beaches [“Rhode Island’s Secret Beaches,” July 2014] on Facebook and reactions were… passionate. Some people loved learning about new spots to lie out in the sun. Others not so much. Here’s what some of you thought about this amazing/appalling exposé. Thanks so much for posting this! I’ve lived in RI my whole life and have only heard of two of these. I will have to check them all out with my kids. Gregory Pagliarini Thanks for ruining my favorite part of growing up here… Madison Machado I’ve always lived in RI and I didn’t know about 95% of these. So I’m glad [they] posted it. Jessica Brennan You know they’re called secrets for a reason. Patrick Engelhardt Thank you so much! I can’t wait to bring my big family down to these beaches. We may try out each one before this summer is up. Alishia Chaney

So Happening
Roller Coaster Nostalgia
The Skydiver in the 1970s
Rhode Island’s beloved Rocky Point is certainly missed, but for every memory of fried food and fast rides there are countless moments lost forever to time. Good thing David Bettencourt has made it his personal crusade to thoroughly document our late amusement park. Turn the page to read about his new book of archived photos, Rocky Point Park. August 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND
17
So Happening | So & So CoNtiN ued fRom page 17
Rocky Point Memories David Bettencourt is no stranger to the saga of Rocky Point. In 2007 he produced and directed the documentary You Must Be This Tall: The Story of Rocky Point and had co-authored a book of black and white photos of the park with Arcadia Publishing shortly after the film’s release. Now he’s revisiting memories of the park with another book from Arcadia, this time with full color images that span the entire life of our state’s late amusement park in Rocky Point Park. From its humble beginnings as a seaside resort in the late 19th century to a place where Sinatra, The Ramones and even a sitting President would stop on their way through Rhode Island, the life and times of Rocky Point is preserved lovingly in this book of photos culled from the You Must Be This Tall archives and private collections. “Depending on your age everyone has a different memory of what the
park looks like,” David explains. It was crucial for him to showcase all of those different eras, as well as the “mom and pop” nature of the park, which he felt was best represented by the unique attractions and the staff’s hand painted signage. “People talk about this park like it was a member of their family,” David says. “I wanted to show my kids my childhood as a Rhode Islander.” For Rhode Islanders in their 20s, or transplants like myself, Rocky Point is as mythical as El Dorado or Atlantis. It’s a fabled land of legend where teenage memories were forged on hot summer nights in pools of neon glow coming off the The Skydiver and where cherished family moments were forever sealed in Kodachrome. Lucky for us, many of those great photos have been held onto and are now being shared. –Tony Pacitti

Remembering Sari A Wakefield open-air classroom honors the memory of a special little girl Nestled in a natural oasis
in the heart of Wakefield is a peaceful place that honors a special person. Sarah “Sari” McClarnon spent some of her best days playing along the Saugatucket River. When Sari lost her eight-year battle with childhood cancer in 2005, those who knew her knew this would be a special spot to remember her. Today, Sari’s Sanctuary is a covered outdoor classroom on the Saugatucket River intended for the use of teachers and students at Wakefield Elementary School and the entire Wakefield community. As it’s the perfect place for a peaceful practice, yoga classes will be offered at the Sanctuary two days each

SURF'S up
Fostering a new generation of surfers at Narragansett Town Beach By Grace Lentini
Rachel McCarty, Medelise Reifsteck and Lily Gartner
Photography (Top & R) by Gus Potter (Bottom L) by Kyle Halavik
Everyone is drawn to the siren song of the waves. Some dip their feet in, others lay by it, some splash around and take a few strokes. Then there are those who want to be on the waves, surfing them. You’ve probably seen them off of Narragansett Town Beach, clad in neoprene, buoyed by the gentle surf. They sit on their boards, waiting for the waves to roll in. They point their boards to the shore, start paddling, pop up and ride the waves to their heart’s content, then paddle back out to deeper waters. Surfing is many things to different people: a hobby, a passing interest, a great workout, a way of life. Once dominated by men, surfing has become much more gender neutral. In fact, most women who pick the sport up rave about the surf community’s camaraderie. I spoke with three women who love the sport, and the community they’re a part of.
Lily Gartner
Lily Gartner, 13 Lily Gartner’s been surfing since she was seven years old and won’t be stopping anytime soon. “My father taught me and my brother Noah how to surf. He grew up surfing in Narragansett, so he knows all the breaks,” says Lily. “I used to only go out a few days a week, now I surf all day, everyday, year-round.” Her dream is to become a pro surfer. “I’ve always wanted to get sponsored by a company, and that happened,” she beams. Lily is currently sponsored by two companies, Rip Curl and IMSY, a local bikini company started by a woman surfer from Rhode Island. Rip Curl has sent her bathing suits, wet suits, t-shirts, dresses and shorts, and they picked her because she embodies the surf lifestyle. But they also chose her because she’s a darn good kid. Lily is a straight-A student and a lovely young lady. It’s inescapably clear that this is her passion. She’s even got the medals to prove it. At 11, she entered her first
Rachel McCarty
competition and placed third. In her second competition she placed first in the Girls Under 14 division and in her most recent competition this winter, she placed first in the Girls Under 14 division and first overall in the Longboard division. Above all else, Lily emphasizes good surf etiquette, which amounts to sharing the waves. “It’s not fair for one person to catch all the waves. You want to respect all the surfers. It’s just good sportsmanship,” she explains. It’s this respect she shows for others that has earned her the respect from the surf community. She also wants other young women to not be afraid to try surfing: “Just go for it. Even if you’re not the best at it you can still surf for fun.” For her there’s always another wave to catch on the horizon, especially since she’s only surfed in Rhode Island. “I want to surf a lot of places in California and Hawaii. That’s where I want to live when I get older,” she says. Well, with the direction she’s going, California and Hawaii better watch out for our Rhode Island gal.
Rachel McCarty, 28 Rachel McCarty started surfing when she was 12-years-old while visiting her grandmother on spring break in Charleston, SC. She’s been hooked ever since her first lesson. “It was a dark and stormy day and I remember the surf being rough, but [my surf instructor] pushed me into my first wave and I stood up and surfed it straight to the beach,” Rachel says. “This was the turning point for the rest of my life, because everything after that day was about surfing.” Now, she surfs year-round. The smell of surf wax and salt air always brings her back to those first few times she surfed. “I’m sure they weren’t graceful moments, but they were some of the most fun,” she says, laughing. “The thrill and adrenaline were overwhelming. I think before I even caught my first wave, I had built surfing up to be the greatest thing ever. I am so glad it delivered.” Rachel’s competed in the past and was the president of the Surf Club at the University of Rhode Island for a couple years. But most of all she loves the connection to the ocean she feels while surfing. It’s all at once calming August 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

and rejuvenating for her. Even the feeling of the water passing through her fingers is special. “I love the feeling of weightlessness you get on a wave, and the pure focus you have when you are riding it,” she says, “because absolutely nothing else matters in that moment.” The camaraderie is important too; it takes a special kind of person to devote their life to surfing. In the past, she’s definitely felt that some guys didn’t think she could catch a wave, so they would drop in on her. But these incidents were few and far between. She’s held her ground, kept catching waves and has found the overall vibe to be much friendlier, partially due to having more women in the sport. And her advice to women who want to start: “Realize you are diving into an obsession that will leave your hair salty, sand on your floorboards and surfboards in every nook and cranny of your life... It isn’t meant to be easy, and sticking with it is the key to success.” Success, for her, can be counted in the waves she’s surfed. One of Rachel’s favorite sessions was from this past winter, when she paddled out alone before dawn. “I saw a sliver moon set and sea smoke illuminated by the sunrise,” she reminisces. “My hood quickly covered with a layer of ice, and although the waves were decent, I couldn’t stop smiling because it was such a crazy and beautiful moment.”
Medelise Reifsteck, 52 Medelise started consistently surfing about 12 years ago when she signed her daughter up for a three-day surf clinic called Chicks on Sticks. She enrolled herself and has been hooked ever since. She was 40 when she started. “I did my first surf competition last year when I was 51. I felt like it was something I wanted to check off the list,” she says. “I have a competitive nature and I thought it would be fun. It was the Battle of the Beaches annual surf competition at Narragansett Town Beach and I managed second place in the Women’s Longboard division.” For Medelise though, it’s not all about the competitions. She loves the thrill and pure joy of what surfing does for her. While she’s out on the water, she’ll take in the natural beauty all around her, staring in awe. Then there are the times she paddles out and sees five to ten friends who share her passion. She’ll catch that perfect wave and let the rest fall away. There was one point, however, she had to stop surfing for health reasons. She got a major bacterial infection and spent six weeks in the hospital. After multiple surgeries and major complications, she lost almost a third of her body mass, her muscles had atrophied and she was extremely weak. “Finding my way back out onto the board and building up the necessary physical strength to surf was a priority for me and quite the undertaking,” Medelise explains. “It took me over two years to get back to the place that I was with my life and with surfing before I had the infection.” And now that she’s back on the board, she can’t see ever stopping unless forced to by injury or illness. She loves surfing in South County. “We have an amazing surf community. What I have seen in the way of love and support from all the surfers young and old towards each other makes me feel blessed to be a part of it all. And God we have some fun!” Her best advice to those who want to surf is that you are never too old or too young to start. “My aunt started surfing at 64 and just turned 70 and is still surfing,” she beams. “I would say that surfing may very well be the most fun you will ever have. It takes time, practice and a healthy dose of obsession to get good at it, but it’s well worth it in the end.”

The Verandah at the Ocean house
Finn’s Harborside
The name may have changed over the years, but the view from the outdoor bar at Finn’s Harborside is always the same. Perched in Greenwich Cove, Finn’s is a great starting place (by land or by boat) to start your al fresco cocktail tour of South County. The restaurant has entertainment nightly in the summer, starting in the afternoons on weekends, so order up your favorite summer beer – they’ve got an extensive selection on draft and in bottles – sit back, and soak in the part of the year we’ve waited ten long months for. 38 Water Street, East Greenwich. 884-6363, www.finnsharborside.com.
Tavern by the Sea
You might have been to Tavern by the Sea and not noticed its lower patio and waterfront bar. All the better for savvy patrons looking to get a seat. The beloved landmark in Wickford has a large upper deck filled with lunch and dinner patrons, while the lower offers additional seating and has its own bar, which is so close to Wickford Harbor that you could reach out and touch the water if you wanted to. Choose a specialty mojito like raspberry, blueberry, watermelon or 1800 Coconut and sip as the kayakers drift by. If you’re feeling really summery, treat yourself to a frozen concoction like a Blue Hawaii or a Mango Tango. 16 W Main Street, North Kingstown. 294-5771, www.tavernbytheseari.com
Coast Guard House
It doesn’t get any more classically South County than the rooftop deck at the Coast Guard House. Upstairs has a different, more casual menu then the downstairs fine dining restaurant, and you won’t feel shy grabbing a table in a wet bathing suit. Their cocktail menu is divided into Local Spirits (featuring New England’s own Sons of Liberty distillery in South Kingstown, Keel Vodka from the East Bay, Triple 8 from Nantucket and more) and Spirits from Around the Globe, with concoctions like the Coconut Water Cocktail, with Tito’s vodka, coconut water, pineapple, lime and mint. Order a frozen drink (like the Coast Guard House Mudslide, made with Dave’s Coffee Syrup from Charlestown) to cool off from the beach, and maybe a lobster roll, and get ready to hit the waves again. 40 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 789-0700, www.thecoastguardhouse.com

Jamestown Fish
Ocean House
If you want a glimpse of how the other half lives, but don’t have the other half’s budget, then head to the Verandah at the Ocean House. The opulent resort in Watch Hill has a wraparound porch that has seating for small groups, serves cocktails and snacks, and doesn’t require reservations or Nantucket Reds. The Ocean House Southside has Mt. Gay Dark Rum, fresh lemon, simple syrup and Fever Tree Bitter Lemon with a float of Meyers Dark Rum; the Low Tide Painkiller is made with Mt. Gay Silver Rum, pineapple juice, Crème de Coco, grapefruit juice and Crème de Strawberry. Watch the yachts sail by as you sip, and try to act cool, like you’re totally not trying to spy on Taylor Swift’s house next-door. 1 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill. 584-7000, www.oceanhouseri.com.
Jamestown Fish
While you might think of Jamestown Fish as a fine dining restaurant – you wouldn’t be wrong, by the way – there’s a whole other, more casual side. Upstairs in the restaurant is a laid-back bar with an attached deck that has an unparalleled view of the Newport Bridge. It is, in our expert opinion, the very best vantage point for a sunset cocktail… at least on Conanicut Island. Downstairs, the patio bar has lounge areas with private fire pits, a wood oven turning out pizzas and smaller bites, and seasonal cocktails that change at the creative bartenders’ whim. A recent concoction had Ketel One, apricot, blood orange and Prosecco over crushed ice, garnished with an edible flower. If you get hungry after all that sipping, chef Matthew McCartney’s food has garnered him Food + Wine magazine’s best chef in New England for two years running. You could do worse than to try something. 14 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-3474, www.jamestownfishri.com August 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Paddy’s Beach Club
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Paddy’s, on the Misquamicut strip, is the closest you’re going to get to a tropical resort in Rhode Island. The restaurant has three outdoor bars long enough that you’re guaranteed to get a seat at any time of the day. Paddy’s also has an attached Tiki Beach, where servers will bring you cocktails like the 1800 Coconut Crusher, Island Rum Punch or Ultimate Mudslide while you lounge in the sand in beach chairs. When it’s time for a dip, just put your parrot shaped glass down, jump into the ocean, and head back to the chair for a refill. It’s the best possible way to have a summer staycation in the Ocean State. 159 Atlantic Avenue, Westerly. 596-2610, www.paddysbeach.com
The Andrea
The historic Andrea Hotel in Misquamicut may not have survived Hurricane Sandy, but its patio did. It’s hard to find a better view in the entire Ocean State then in one of their Adirondack chairs, cocktail in hand. Step off the sand and directly into the restaurant, where every table is al fresco. If you’ve brought friends, order up a pitcher of one of their specialty cocktails. If you haven’t, well, that’s not going to last long in this convivial atmosphere. 89 Atlantic Ave, Westerly. 348-8788, www.andreabeachbar.com
Contrary to popular belief, there’s more than one outdoor bar in Narragansett with an amazing water view. Oceanside at the Pier has an expansive patio attached to the laid back restaurant, with a bar long enough that you can get a seat with an ocean view, and live acoustic music all weekend. Sip on a Coronarita, have lunch or dinner, and make some new friends as you watch surfers drove past with their boards along the sea wall. 1 Beach Street, Narragansett. 792-3999, www.oceansideatthepier.com
Ocean Mist
There is no better, classically Rhode Island summer moment than sitting on the deck at the Ocean Mist, sipping a Narragansett Del’s Shandy (made with the real lemonade… it’s summer in a can). Add a plate of fish tacos, and time your visit to when there’s a band playing – which in the summer is basically any afternoon or evening. This laid-back, casual bar was named one of Esquire magazine’s Best Bars in America a few years ago. But, it’s been fighting a war against the ocean itself (erosion has been a constant problem for the O’Mist and neighboring Tara’s) and against the town of South Kingstown, which approved a sea wall that would effectively sink both businesses. The Rooftop at Phil’s
Wait, what? Wakefield has a rooftop bar? We know. We were surprised, too. But one visit is all you need to make the Rooftop at Phil’s a regular fixture to your cocktailing routine. (Everyone has one of those, right?) Downstairs, Phil’s has two identities: the
36
SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2015
The rooftop at phil’s grille first floor diner serves breakfast and lunch every day, while the upstairs is Phil’s Main Street Grille, serving more upscale cuisine for dinner. But in the summer, the star of the show is the Rooftop Deck. While you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner up there, we recommend grabbing a seat at the center bar, ordering up a local brew like a Grey Sail Flying Jenny (made in Westerly) and soaking in the sun. 323 Main Street, Wakefield. 783-4073, www.philsmainstreetgrille.com
George’s and Champlin’s
You can’t talk about one without talking about the other. Two restaurants, across a parking lot from each other, both perched at the very tip of the Port of Galilee. They’ve both been serving the state’s freshest seafood since the 1940s. The differences between George’s of Galilee and Champlin’s are subtle, but they’re definitely there. George’s has a more extensive menu, especially for people who don’t love seafood (and inexplicably haven’t been kicked out of Rhode Island yet). Upstairs, they have two huge bars – one has an attached patio with a view of Salty Brine beach, and the other has so many open windows that it feels like being outside while you sip a ‘Gansett – what else? – and listen to live music. Champlin’s, on the other hand, is stricter about its traditional New England seafood offerings, with the added bonus of being able to pick out your lobster downstairs in the fish market and have it prepared upstairs in the restaurant. Their new Channel Bar is the perfect vantage point to watch the Block Island Ferry sail past, and serves up a mean Bloody Mary. Blu on the Water
Blu on the Water
This chic restaurant is the place to see and be seen in East Greenwich in the summer. Blu on the Water is a Miami-inspired restaurant that has the largest waterfront patio in the state, with fire pits and live entertainment on weekends. Take your pick of six varieties of sangria – like the Strawberry-Basil Champagne Sangria or the Pink Watermelon Sangria – or frozen drinks like a Mango Rum Slush or Spiked Frozen Lemonade. “Maritime Mixers” like Pirate’s Cove, made with three kinds of rum, and margaritas like the Mango Pineapple Paradise will further complicate your decision. Or, if you’re really looking to make a splash, just spring for the $500 bottle of Dom Perignon Rosé. Whether you get there by water or land is up to you – Blu has transient dockage for stylish sailors. 20 Water Street, East Greenwich. 885-3700, www.bluonthewater.com

Matunuck Oyster Bar
The line of cars waiting at valet might be intimidating, but don’t let a little wait stop you from bellying up to Matunuck Oyster Bar’s gorgeous outdoor bar. Views of the salt pond set the perfect backdrop for a glass of bubbly and a dozen oysters raised by chef/owner Perry Raso and taken from the water that day. Since you’re eating hyper-local, drink that way too, by ordering a Matunuck Martini with Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur and Prosecco, or the Potter’s Pond Bloody Mary, with Ultimat vodka, house mix and a Matunuck oyster floater. 629 Succotash Road, Matunuck. 783-4202, www.rhodyoysters.com
Hammerhead Grill
You’re probably already familiar with the Bon Vue Inn, the popular bar on Ocean Road in Narragansett that’s so close to Iggy’s and Aunt Carrie’s that you basically have to stop by or it’s against the natural laws of summer. Friday nights especially, the Bon Vue is full of sun worshippers dancing to great local bands. What you might not realize is that you can have all of the view and none of the bumping into people upstairs at the Hammerhead Grill’s patio. Serving up summery concoctions like the Pink Flamingo (Absolut Vanilla vodka, Malibu coconut rum, cranberry and pineapple juice) and the Tiki Colada (rum, Kahlua, Irish Cream and Malibu) along with traditional tropical favorites like Mai Tais and Rum Runners, Hammerhead is definitely worth a stop. 1230 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 789-6159, www.hammerheadgrillri.com
Tara’s Tipperary Tavern
The other must-stop on the Matunuck strip is Tara’s, an authentically Irish pub directly on the beach. (Tara herself is from Ireland, and grew up living over her family’s pub.) If you’re starting early, don’t miss the traditional Irish breakfast – which of course wouldn’t be complete without a Guinness. Tara’s has frequent live music, but the best part about it is that the restaurant has rental cottages attached to it. If you enjoy yourself a little too much partying by the shore, you can stay the night. Whether you start all over again in the morning is completely up to you. 907 Matunuck Beach Road, Matunuck. 284-1901, www.tarasfamilypub.com

The “Dog Days of Summer” are here.
Twin Willows is the locals’ sanctuary in a sea of summer tourists in Narragansett. While they all congregate around the sea wall, those in the know choose this laid-back, slightly more off the radar restaurant in Bonnet Shores. The new outdoor bar has a view of the Newport Bridge that’s far enough away for you to appreciate the scenery, and just close enough to be grateful you aren’t stuck in that bridge traffic. Monday-Friday pub menu specials give you delicious deals on snacks to enjoy with your cold brew. 865 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 789-8153, www.twinwillowsnarragansett.com

The Humphreys’ home may be in South County, but the colors and textures are all Texas
Deep in the Heart of East Greenwich
Photography by Grace Lentini
A Dallas family brings southern warmth to New England There’s a certain kind of culture shock one might expect when moving from Texas to Rhode Island. For the Humphreys family, there was a lot to see, learn and experience when they transferred to the Ocean State. Though they left the longhorns behind (at least in the literal sense), the family is discovering that Texas isn’t the only place where the stars at night are big and bright. “I have some Dallas in here,” Carrie Humphreys says, laughing unapologetically, referring to the leopard print accents in her office. But the warm, polished yet unpretentious style of her family’s East Greenwich home didn’t happen overnight. The family rented a house in the coveted suburban village during their first year in Rhode Island to see if it was the kind of town they would later plant roots. With spacious homes, lush landscapes and a
top-rated school system, it’s easy to see why the family fell for EG. Finding a home to suitably accommodate their Lone Star State-sized furnishings wasn’t as easy. “My closet used to be the size of a small bedroom,” Carrie explains. “Moving what we had into a New England-style home proved challenging.” Fortunately, Carrie and her husband Dustin worked with a realtor who helped them imagine the possibilities of local homes, not just see what was in plain sight. “Our realtor was forward thinking about the construction we could do,” she explains. Creative vision is exactly what they needed when their realtor took the couple to a dated home that was undeniably flawed but ripe for modifications. A rolling green lawn, four spacious bedrooms, enviable closet space, room for an office and a partially open floor plan were all in the
pro column. But the positive characteristics were a bit camouflaged by the decor, or lack thereof. “It was horrible,” Carrie says, laughing. “I literally walked in, said ‘Nope!’ and didn’t even go upstairs.” But after some more coaxing, she poked around and saw that much of the improvements to be made were merely aesthetic, while more ambitious projects, like building a new, contemporary kitchen and updated guest bath, could be planned, built and completed in due time. “There was an open floor plan with the kitchen and living room. That doesn’t happen in New England so much and that’s what drew us to it,” she says. The Humphreys first tackled the kitchen as the decidedly dated space desperately needed to embrace the 21st century. “It was total ‘80s,” Carrie says of the original kitchen. “Kelly
green countertops, green and white striped borders, 4”x4” square tile which zig zagged into a different terra cotta tile… it was awful.” They turned to friend Janelle Photopoulos, founder of Fresh Nest Color & Design based in Wakefield, to reinvent the kitchen’s aesthetic. The firm offers a sliding scale of residential interior design services and helped make Carrie’s vision of a warm, welcoming space with plenty of room to entertain a reality. A pass through bar was created to maximize space and seating. The peculiar hodgepodge of dissimilar-sized tile was scrapped in its entirety to make room for contemporary 18”x18” tile in a neutral shade. Custom cabinetry, in a tone of creamy white glazed in a gentle gray shade, offers a clean aesthetic. A darker shade of gray on the range hood and on the island provide complementary focal points August 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

in the kitchen. “I wanted neutral. In Dallas, everything is dark hardwoods and a little rustic with shiny metals. I was trying to merge what I had with New England [design], so I did a lot of neutral and accented it with décor,” says Carrie. As she also felt a large pantry was essential, Carrie had the construction crew knock out a closet in the mudroom. The result is an enviable walk-in pantry that Carrie painted in a whimsical teal hue. There was also an ulterior motive for the new kitchen, concedes Carrie. “When

you have high school kids, you want them to hang out at your house,” so you can keep an eye on them, she says, laughing. “Well, sometimes.” The kitchen has already paid returns handsomely. Not only do the Humphreys, which include teens Derek and Madison, enjoy the updated look and practical layout, it’s been ideal for the parties Carrie hosts as a clothing stylist. “I entertain a lot with my job and needed an open area to do trunk shows,” she explains. Upstairs, the Humphreys had Legacy Construction of Warwick gut the
guest bathroom, bidding adieu to the floor-to-ceiling sea foam shade and dated fixtures. “They were in and out in two weeks – it was amazing,” says Carrie. “They did everything they said they were going to do and it cost exactly what they said it would.” The new look includes all new features and a light gray beadboard that complements the baby gray walls and silver fixtures. The space is finished with stunning photography by Madison. Outside, the family transformed a once neglected yard into a relaxing
gathering space. “It had been a rental property, so nothing was updated,” Carrie explains. The three-season room leads to a fire pit, hot tub and manicured patio. Further beyond the landscaped yard opens to the woods, which lend a private, whimsical vibe. Looking around it’s evident that for the Humphreys, home really is where heart is.

Now seeing patients in East Greenwich, too! New physicians office at 1567 South County Trail. 50 SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2015
After eight successful years in Wakefield, why did you decide to move to East Greenwich last month? We decided to relocate to East Greenwich to centralize the store. We have customers from all over Rhode Island. East Greenwich makes it pretty easy for our customers to come to us, especially during the long winters. We also love the feeling on Main Street. We are still considering a smaller space in Wakefield as a second location for the future… stay tuned. Another new addition is your small boutique inside the Break Hotel. Yes! The hotel just opened this summer in Narragansett and it’s absolutely gorgeous. We will continue our resort looks there and carry lines like Jude Connally, which have been so popular in Wakefield. We’re also looking to introduce fun special events like trunk shows come early spring. What trends have been popular in South County this summer? The colors this season are softer than last year, with warmer, more subtle tones. White is always beautiful this time of year and we carry a lot of it. Nautical influence and easy-to-wear, flowy bohemian looks
are also very popular. Being located in a coastal state, customers are always looking for these looks, so we’ve been carrying them from the very beginning. What’s a good way to transition a summer dress from day to night? Taking a summer dress from day to evening is easy with the right jewelry. We carry very affordable “pick up pieces” to complete a look as well as higher priced one-of-a-kind pieces. They also make great gifts. We’ve always admired your boutique name. Tell us how you came up with it. We came across an article that stated there was proof that serotonin levels rise in people’s brains when they shop, therefore truly providing a form of therapy. Our tag line is “a cure for the wardrobe blues.” Women can be hard on themselves when trying on clothing. Clothing should be fun. The real therapeutic part is making sure that every customer walks out of the store feeling great about her purchase and the way she looks in it. We never want anyone regretting a purchase. We want them to love their clothes and wear it for years. It’s so rewarding to hear that from our customers all the time.

House of Hair helps make your ‘do dreams come true Who loves growing out a short haircut? What’s that? No one? That’s what I thought. A few months ago I was feeling a new sassy short cut, and about two days later, I bought my local drugstore out of hair and nail supplements trying to get it back. Allow me to let you in on a secret: it didn’t work. Months of hard grow-out work had finally come to fruition and I was ready to go back to my tried and true color and style, and nothing, I mean absolutely nothing less, would suffice. Luckily, Jessica Tessitore owner and stylist at House of Hair in West Warwick was ready and willing to fill my hair prescription. Jessica opened House of Hair in January after working in salons and spas in East Greenwich. She was ready to have a place of her own. Her 16 years of experience allowed her to know that despite my bargaining with myself that maybe I was ready again to try something new, I’d be happy with nothing less than what I wanted, my old style back. “I’ll trim your bangs, but I’ll talk you out of that super short cut I know you don’t want,” Jessica says. She’s got a knack for knowing what people want deep down inside, even if they don’t. And that kind of expertise is, in my humble opinion, worth its weight in gold. After chatting about my hair woes, and showing her a phone selfie that I bemoaned as my “good hair” days, Jessica was ready and willing to bring those days back again. I thought maybe I wanted a new color, or maybe a different cut, but she assured me that my signature red hue was perfect for my skin tone, and she wouldn’t dare give me something less than fabulous, which, of course, is always a relief to hear. We chatted about life and work as she mixed up and applied my signature copper color, while jazzing it up for summer with some highlights along the way. She told me about the other services that the salon offers, like manicures, waxing and eyelash extensions. Jessica also told me about a cool new treatment called the waterless pedicure. The treatment uses a warm parafin treatment with a bag that replaces the foot soak portion of a standard pedi. Not
only is it more sanitary, but it helps put the mind at ease knowing your tootsies aren’t going where many-atootsie has gone before. After my color had time to process, I was treated to a rinse in the most comfortable sink chair I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying in my life. These space-age looking bad boys are ergonomically designed to cradle your head and neck into the sink so you don’t feel like a Barbie doll with a head that might snap off. Jessica told me, “I knew the one thing I definitely wasn’t going to skimp on were these chairs.” I would say the investment paid off. After I was rinsed and returned to the station, Jessica proceeded to return my curls to their previous glory. A mid-length cut with lots of layers that helped my hair create a halo of ringlets. After an application of some delicious smelling ColorProof styling products, she treated me to a blow out to turn my new cut into a cute, straight style. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results of my visit. Who knew that a return to my normal could feel so good? My hair was finally grown out and all that patience paid off into the style I had been dreaming of for months. Mission accomplished; high five me. (Well, and House of Hair too.)

Deep South County Maplewood Smoked St. Louis Ribs from Hank’s Down South

Putting the South in South County Hank’s Down South kicks up barbecue in Narragansett with his brother, Georgie. The deck is decidedly dog friendly and provides water bowls to all canine customers. On a gorgeous southern Rhode Island summer day I grabbed my barbecue loving friend, and we made the trip to Hank’s. Everyone we talked to that day looked at us quizzically when we said we were going to Galilee for barbecue. Even the owner, who was tending bar, greeted us by asking, “Are you here for lunch? You do know this is a barbecue restaurant, right?” We did know, and we both love barbecue, so we were ready. The beautiful summer day deserved a cocktail, so we had a great time perusing the menus. One was exclusively filled with bourbon drinks, which suited me just fine. I had a Bourbon Back ($8) – Four Roses Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Goslings Ginger Beer and muddled lime. It was refreshing, delicious and a top shelf bargain. My friend got the Lazy Lizard ($9), more for the name than the ingredients, but ended up loving the mix of fruit juices, Absolut Citron Vodka, Peach Schnapps, triple sec and Midori. The drinks were served in mason jars that fit perfectly with the restaurant’s rustic charm. The bar also featured one of my favorite local

breweries, Whaler’s Brewing Company, so I had their Hazelnut Stout on tap ($5.50). The menu at Hank’s has everything
to love about Southern food, and although barbecue is a big part of the menu, Hank’s has even more to offer. For starters, there are BaconWrapped Jalapeno Poppers ($6), Fried Pickle Chips ($6) and King Size Beer Battered Onion Rings ($6). My friend and I liked the idea of Smoked Jumbo Chicken Wings ($9), so we started with an order of those. I love smoked chicken wings, and these were made even better with a duo of house-made sauces: a sweet molasses and a spicy buffalo. We both preferred the buffalo sauce because we like things a little spicy, but the molasses sauce was also delicious. Luckily Hank’s keeps a roll of paper towels on each table because the wings were a bit messy (in a good way). The smoker at Hank’s has its hands full with Amy’s full array of smoked meats. She smokes the usual suspects – ribs, pork, brisket and turkey. Yet one curveball Amy throws onto the menu is her Smoked Fried Bologna Sandwich ($8). Curious about

There is nothing like the first stop of the summer season at your favorite seafood shack on the way home from the beach. For Rhode Islanders, clam cakes and chowder are as characteristic of summer as Del’s lemonade and bodysurfing at Narragansett Town Beach. Once August arrives, however, you may no longer crave fried seafood. So how about some barbecue? That sounds better, but is there a place to stop and get barbecue by the beach? I’m here to tell you there is barbecue by the beach, and it offers a great view of the harbor. Hank’s Down South is located in Galilee, and if you’re a fan of barbecue, you need to pay them a visit. Amy Mason opened Hank’s Down South in 2013, and although the restaurant is slightly off the beaten path, it’s easy to find. It’s located on the second floor of 33 State Street, which provides excellent views of both the harbor and Great Island. The inside has a comforting rustic charm, while the outside deck is filled with Adirondack chairs that face the harbor and entice you to sit with a drink and stay for a long while. The restaurant is named after Amy’s dog, Hank, who can be seen holding court at the restaurant along

both the brisket and the pulled pork, we ordered a Smoked Beef Brisket Sandwich ($11) and a Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich ($9). We were initially surprised by the white bread (think one step above Wonder Bread) the sandwiches were served on, but we both agreed that it worked. The bread kept the emphasis on the barbecue with just the right amount of dough necessary to hold all the deliciousness together. Both sandwiches were good, but I give the edge to the beef brisket, which was filled with large chunks of smoky goodness and accented by sliced pickles and thin red onion. I also really enjoyed the pulled pork, topped with Hank’s creamy chipotle slaw. The sandwiches were served with a bag of potato chips and we added an additional side of Creamy Chipotle Slaw ($2). The mix didn’t pack much heat, but it was fresh with a
nice crunch to it. Although the desserts sounded delicious, my friend and I passed since we were headed to the beach. There was the sinful sounding Chocolate Covered Bacon ($6) served with three scoops of vanilla ice cream or Bacon Wrapped Cinnamon Buns ($4). Both sounded so good, next time I might just eat dessert. Here in Rhode Island, there aren’t many places you can find barbecue done right, but Hank’s Down South is dishing it out. And, if someone in your group isn’t fond of barbecue, Hank’s even offers Fish Tacos ($10).

Passion in a Pan Chef David Michaca puts his own twist on comfort food After moving from Mexico to the U.S. at 15 years old, chef David Michaca began his culinary journey at the lowest rung in the restaurant ladder. Over time, David mastered all areas of the cooking line, until finally being made chef of Mia’s Prime Time Café last year. We met with David to get a closer look into his story, his culinary roots and why he believes fresh ingredients define excellent cooking.
Photography by Soozie Sundlun / East Greenwich Photo
Where did you discover your passion for cooking? When I first came to the U.S. with my brother, Antonio, I worked with him at a restaurant as a dishwasher and a busser, but all I wanted to do was cook on the line. He and the chef gave me the opportunity, and I was a very quick learner. I was first taught to make pizza, then moved over to the fryer and further down to all areas of the cooking line. I fell in love with it, [so] it was natural for me to continue as a chef. What is your favorite dish on Mia’s menu? Fish and Chips is one of my favorites; it’s one of the first things I learned how to cook. Have your roots in Mexican cuisine and culture influenced your cooking? When I was younger, my mom taught me traditional Mexican cooking. I learned to make mole poblano, tamales, Mexican chocolate and grinding corn for tortillas. This was a huge chore. I was never allowed to go out and play until all the corn was ground. How have your culinary changed over time?
tastes
Mia has given me more responsibility and freedom to create my own recipes. I do incorporate some Mexican culture, especially on the weekends. New menu items include Ceviche, Seafood Risotto (similar to a paella style) and a Pueblo Omelet with jalapeño, tomato, onions and Queso Fresco cheese. [I will make] some soups too such as Chilled Avocado and Roasted Jalapeño, and Smoked Tomato Bisque with a molasses glaze. Tell me about some of your breakfast offerings people look forward to. Guests rave about our various pancakes made with fresh blueberry or strawberry, our Mia’s oatmeal with an assortment of dried fruits and nuts; stuffed French toast with a raspberry sauce, and our omelets. Locals love our Smoked Salmon Platter and the classic Eggs Benedict we serve on the weekends. How do you define excellent cooking? I define excellent cooking by the passion and enjoyment I get from it. Utilizing the freshest ingredients from our vendors and ensuring the product meets our expectations [is important]. Freshness ensures each menu item is superior in flavor and presentation. We won’t cook an item just to fulfill a ticket; if it is not 100% correct, then it does not hit the table.

Creating Culinary Destinations A four-night dinner series highlights the bounty of South County Nothing’s better in the peak of sum-
mer than eating outside with friends. Take it one step further and source your meal locally. Go even further and source your wine locally. This is exactly what Eat Drink RI had in mind when putting together a four-night dinner series at Providence Media Horseshoe Farm in Westerly, but there’s a Spot ads: 2.125" x 2.875" twist. The chef and her team are coming from Austin, TX, from a restaurant called June 30, 2015 Eden East. And the kicker: Chef and owner Sonya Coté is a RI native, so this is also a homecoming. July 7, 2015 Providence Monthly, August “IIssue grew up in North Kingstown and July 10, 2015 Bay Magazine, August learned issue the fundamentals of cookin the state from my grandpa Jim, July 14, 2015 SO Rhode Island, AugustingIssue who graduated in 1975 from Johnson & Wales. I strongly identify with the ingredients that are used in this region,” Sonya explains. “Now that I live in Texas, and as a locavore chef, it’s impossible to source these foods that I grew up loving. Steamers, lobster, monkfish, skate, clams, chowder, quahogs, oysters. I really want my Eden East crew to experience these foods and be inspired by learning something new.” The dinner series will be sourced as locally as possible, including products from Blackbird Farm, Walrus & Carpenter Oysters, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Revival Brewing Company and more. Each evening will begin with a reception at 6pm, featuring a raw bar and cocktails by Texas-based Deep Eddy Vodka, followed by a seated dinner paired with wine and beer. “The dinner series is a testament to the growth of food tourism in the state. There was a study that came out recently about travelers who are seeking out culinary experiences, specifically going to places because there is food they want to eat,” explains Katie Kleyla, Eat Drink Clothing, Jewelry & Accessories RI’s Director of Development. “We’re in this food renaissance where people are willing to pay a little more for an experience you can’t have at a restaurant.” Any One IteM In fact, Katie’s already fielding calls W/ thIS COupOn from folks all over New England tellOne coupon per person not to be combined ing her that they’re coming down to RI with any other offer. for the whole weekend, not just for the dinner, and asking her for a food itinexpires 8/31/15 erary. “Of course we want other businesses to grow here. is a good way to experience it. Expect some flavors you’re not going to run into here in RI.” But it’s also an experience for the Eden East staff, considering that many have not had the real RI experience. “I’m definitely looking forward to watching [my staff] eat lobster,” says Sonya. “I have a few trips planned for them, including a visit to an oyster farm on East Beach (Walrus & Carpenter). A Ninigret Park bonfire is on the list and I have a day trip planned for Block Island, scooters and all. Most likely I’ll take them to the trail that used to be Rocky Point. And they will get their fill of clam cakes, clear chowder, cherrystones, steamers and Del’s.” Eden East will donate a percentage of sales from the dinners to Colors for a Cause RI, a non-profit organization that supports families with children suffering from cancer. So not only will you be having an amazing meal, but now you’ll be helping a worthy charity. Sounds like a win-win. All-inclusive tickets are $150 per guest, and can be purchased via EatDrinkRI.com/RhodeIslandRoundUp. Cans for Conservation Does anything scream land conservation more than cracking open a brewski? Revival Brewing Company doesn’t think so, and neither does Block Island’s ConserFest. The two have joined forces to help raise funds and awareness about land conservation through Revival’s new Night Swim’ah brew. It’s a Belgian-style Witt beer

Good thing, too, because Executive Chef Walter Slater of Smoke House and President and Head Distiller Brent Ryan of Newport Storm Brewery have collaborated for a beer dinner series aimed at celebrating friends, beers and barbecues. Their Farm to Table Barbecue on August 5 will feature Newport Storm’s Hurricane Amber Ale, the Spring Irish Red Ale and the Sourpuss Sour Ale made with real cherries. Menu items to tantalize your tastebuds range from Fried Squash Blossoms, Goat Cheese Gnocchi, Roasted White Halibut, Baffoni Farm Chicken Roulade and a Pot de Creme. Breachway Grille Breachway Grill
was created out of a desire to serve fish tacos and NYstyle pizza to South County’s beach crowd, but it quickly became a yearround favorite in Charlestown. They even had to install a second pizza oven to keep up with demand. Located near the Charlestown Breachway and just a stone’s throw from the beaches, it’s the perfect stop any time for fresh seafood, sandwiches, steaks and chops... and, of course, fish tacos and thin crust pizza. The menu is a mix of classic New England fare, pub favorites and creative pizzas. Breachway Grill is Charlestown’s only source for authentic,
NY-style thin crust, so make sure you fold that slice. Create your own from an array of toppings, or try one of their specialty pizzas like the Smokin’ Bones BBQ Chicken or Jammin’ Clam. For entrees, try the local flavor with the Pt. Judith Day Boat Scallops perfectly seared and served over the creamy risotto of the day, or enjoy a hearty steak dinner with the 14-oz. Breachway Rib Eye. Breachway Grill is dedicated to providing a warm and friendly atmosphere serving great food at reasonable prices. It’s a place that locals and visitors alike can call their own.
Can’t Miss Dish: Scallops Nantucket – local sea scallops sautéed in white wine, topped with crumbled crackers, bacon and cheddar cheese and served with seasoned rice and fresh veggies

Bluewater Bar and Grill
Photography by Rupert Whiteley
Surrounded by water
on Tyler Point Peninsula, the Bluewater Bar and Grill was a well-kept secret for years. This summer, the secret is out: dine on the patio by the water! Indulge in the Fried Yellow Tomato appetizer with prosciutto. Entrees include salads, seafood dishes and pastas, like the Surf ‘n’ Turf, a filet with lobster. Locals love the Sausage and Chicken Rigatoni. For dessert, try a Mixed Berry Tart.
Bluewater serves lunch from Thursday to Sunday, so devour the Watermelon Salad with mango vinaigrette. Thirsty? Sip on Raspberry Sangria. Families – kids under 10 eat free on Sundays. Enjoy $10 pastas on Tuesday and half-priced bottles of wine on Thursdays. Visit the Facebook page to reserve tickets for Bluewater’s monthly beer and wine events. Visit Bluewater. Enjoy the taste of summer, right on the water.
Can’t Miss Dish: Wild Mushroom Ravioli – roasted garlic cream sauce, shaved parmesan and grilled asparagus Bluewater Bar and Grill

Company (CTC) has been a fixture of downtown Wakefield since 2012, providing the community with entertainment and offering classes to aspiring performers. Local business owners have praised the CTC for expanding nightlife, revitalizing the business district and bringing positive change to the area. Now their presence on Main Street is set to increase even more thanks to a $390,000 expansion project. The CTC’s expected purchase of 321 Main Street, the building adjacent to their current address at 327 Main, gives the company the means for increasing their educational offerings, workshops and an artistic residences. Most notably, the expansion includes construction of a riverfront patio for outdoor performances. Just over 72% of the project’s funds had been gathered through silent fundraising. An anonymous donor pledged a matching challenge of $30,000 that, if met, would garner $60,000 necessary to construct the patio. “The $30,000 was matched by May 31 and the donor extended the match through June, so including the match we raised about $68,000 for the project,” Maggie Cady, the CTC’s Communications Director, says. “The waterfront patio is breaking ground and should be open sometime this summer.” The Company has come a long way from their 2005 debut, when they were producing three nights of a single show. Now in 2015, they produce eight full main stage performances and hundreds on the second stage. They’ve grown to employ four full-time members, three part-timers and over a hundred volunteers. “The CTC had been a nomadic company for several years prior to moving to Main Street in the summer of 2012,” Maggie says. “Having a permanent home has allowed us to significantly increase our offerings in education and performances and build stronger ties with the surrounding community. Over the last three years, the theater has grown so much that we now have year-round weekend performances and offer an array of improv, theater and youth classes. Businesses up and down Main Street sponsor the theater, and we partner with locals for events such as Wakefield Idol.” As members of the South Kingstown
The One-Hour Theater Challenge pushes the theater’s ensemble to perform 25 plays in one hour
Chamber of Commerce and the Wakefield Downtown Merchants Association, the CTC is committed to making Downtown Wakefield a destination for arts, culture, shopping and dining. August shows at the CTC include Peter Shaffer’s Black Comedy (Aug 1-2, 7-9 and 13-15), sets of the OneHour Theater Challenge, where nine actors act out 25 plays (Aug 21-23 and 27-30), Micetro Improv on Fridays and the family-oriented Main Street Kids on Saturdays. Every summer CTC features a fun, light-hearted farce, and this summer they’ve chosen Black Comedy. “The first few minutes of the play are performed in darkness, then a power outage occurs in the main character’s apartment and lights flood the stage. It’s a really fun show that audiences are going to love.” Maggie says. In the One-Hour Theater Challenge, eight actors try to perform 25 plays in an hour. CTC ensemble members wrote all of the plays, so they really show off local talent in the area from writers to directors to actors. The audience chooses which order they would like to see the plays based on their titles, so everyone gets involved in the process. Micetro Improv is their weekly improv show where they make up scenes and songs on the spot. It’s a competition where audiences give each scene a score then vote for their favorite performer at the end of the night.
Main Street Kids is their weekly family show that features short episodes and improvisation each week, following a group of kids as they learn new things in their adventures around town. Also throughout August, the CTC will host the Wakefield Village Association’s River Fire events. These shows will take place on the riverfront patio every Thursday at 7pm, filling Main Street with music as people take in the sights of downtown. “Downtown Wakefield is a wonderful location in the heart of the community,” Maggie says. “We have great connections with the high school, local businesses and community at large. It’s easy to walk or bike around the town, and our new property at 321 Main Street has a gorgeous view of the Saugatucket River.” They want to take the great inherent resources of the location and share them with the local community with their new riverfront patio. In the summer, Main Street is filled with people – locals, tourists, and passersbys – and CTC loves offering something for all of them.

A newcomer to the Westerly gallery and shopping scene, The Beach House is already making a splash with locals, summer residents and tourists alike. The gallery-boutique opened at 12 High Street this past February and is filled with paintings, furniture, handmade jewelry, coastal-themed pottery, nautically-themed gifts and other unique items mainly crafted by local artists. Founder and proprietor Laura “Lo” Hopkins decided to open The Beach House partly due to her “love for everything that is beach and art,” but also to fill a previously vacant niche in the area retail market. Her goal? To exhibit and sell pieces by local artists and artisans whose works embody that trademark Rhode Island oceanside aesthetic. “The local artists got me going and inspired me to start the business; they are all tremendously talented, and all of them are featured on our website.” The process of locating and cultivating relationships with area artists was already familiar for Laura. “I have rental properties that I’ve decorated, so I had experience seeking out these types of items. I found myself constantly having to drive to other places to find them, and realized that Westerly was missing this specific type of store. I wanted to bring Watch Hill to Westerly… but also make it affordable. When people ask me if there’s a sister store in Watch Hill, I know I’ve hit
the mark with my selection.” The store offers merchandise at various price points to suit a range of tastes and budgets, so there’s something sure to delight every customer. You can find a cute beach bag for under $20, or a stylish-yet-durable Ella Vickers sailcloth bag for over $100. The Beach House made its debut during the yearly “slow time” for most coastal Rhode Island businesses, but Laura says she has received great support and feedback from Westerly residents over the winter, in addition to customers from neighboring towns like Watch Hill, Weekapaug and Quonnie. She notes that the quieter winter pace was beneficial in giving her the chance to iron out any kinks inherent in starting a new business, but traffic flow has definitely increased dramatically with the arrival of the July fourth weekend. Laura is constantly changing the art in her store and hopes to host receptions and other art-related events in the future. Current local artist offerings include photography by Ardie Harrison, beach-themed or watery landscape paintings by Karl Saila, Lora Cobden, Patty Nunes and Ron Dabelle (many of local South County vistas like Beavertail in Jamestown), rustic-chic furniture painted by Molly Silva, beautiful handmade jewelry by Design By Neringa as well as Rebecca Leonard of
Fuschia Bloom Studio and pebble and sea glass creations by Wayne Swan. Other items for sale at the Beach House make wonderful gifts, décor pieces, accessories or souvenirs, such as: silvery bowls, platters and utensils by Beatriz Ball; trays, frames and other home accents by Mariposa; whimsical or location-specific printed MFH pillows (displaying Weekapaug or Watch Hill coordinates, for instance), an array of fish and seashell-themed home décor items, Paddywax artisan soy candles, drinkware by Rolf Glass and mugs and bowls by SBT Pottery. So stop on by, peruse and support local artists.

Cravings for Crustaceans
Deconstructed Deliciousness
No Shells About It
Celestial Café’s deconstructed crab cake put a twist on this summer classic. Smooth, lightly lemony crab salad is sandwiched between three cornmeal Johnny Cakes for a crispy touch. This beautifully presented dish delighted us with its addition of microgreens, red peppers, sweet onions and Celestial’s own lemoncello artichoke bur blanc. This version passed the deep-fryer for a healthy take we felt fantastic about. 567 South County Trail, Exeter. 295-5559, www.celestialcaferi.com
Siena’s Tortino Di Granchio combined authentic Tuscan influences and seasonal simplicity that made for a light crab crake laced with buttery deliciousness. High quality, lump crabmeat takes center stage with support by parmesan, sour cream, garlic and freshly chopped parsley. Topped with a red basil cream sauce and fresh cracked pepper, this super chewy and flaky interpretation will give you a reason to try something new. 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich. 885-8850, www.sienari.com
Two Claws Up
Relish Every Bite
Served on a bed of sautéed garlic spinach, Two Gulls Café’s cake had visible pieces of real shredded crab. Mixed with just enough green onion and red pepper, this dish was light on breading that created a super flavorful, yet not-too-fishy, ode to crab. An unadulterated take on the traditional crab cake, this is a great option for the crabcake rookie. 2 State Street, Narragansett. 783-4855, www.twogullscafe.com
Light and moist, this version from Jim’s Dock packed the perfect crab-tofilling ratio. A tangy tartar sauce was whipped with pickle relish and Dijon mustard that helped cut through the savory cake for a bite that was anything but average. Lightly lemony, we all agreed that this real-deal Maryland style crab cake would work perfectly on a simple green salad. 1175 Succotash Road, Wakefield. 783-2050

South County is known for many things, but there are two in particular: picturesque summers and seriously delectable seafood. What happens when the two collide? The crab cake, with its stellar combination of fresh flavors, steps up as the season’s MVP. Local restaurants showed us this classic packs enough flavor and substance to satisfy both your taste buds and your appetite.
