SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS IN NARRAGANSETT Those with an adventurous streak know that there is more to summer than endless days at the beach, and the Big Air Jumper is the newest way to find heart-pounding fun at Adventureland (AdventurelandRI.com) in Narragansett. Thrill seekers are strapped into a harness and attached to a set of fiberglass poles, which launch them 20 feet into the air where they can soar, flip and plummet to the sounds of nothing but their own accelerating heartbeat and shrieks of laughter. Each time jumpers’ feet hit the inflatable bouncy

pad they’re launched higher and higher, fulfilling childhood dreams of flying as high as a superhero to actually touch the sky. For Adventureland manager Melissa Kells-Burdick, the Big Air Jumper works because guests aren’t sitting in a ride while the excitement happens around them. Instead, they’re active participants who propel the ride, adjusting the thrills to their own pace. For the fearless and more reluctant alike, it’s the kind of ride that leaves you breathless, laughing and eager to go again. The Extreme Big Air Jumper at Narragansett’s Adventureland

So Happening So & So PADDLE ON

Aquatic Adventures Expand at the Kayak Centre Whether it’s along quiet, idyllic rivers or out on the open sea, there’s no denying that Rhode Island has some gorgeous places to kayak – and South County in particular has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to areas to get out and get your paddle on. Jeff Shapiro, owner of Kayak Centre (KayakCentre.com) in Wickford, knows this well. For more than 20 years, Jeff and his instructors have been showing casual paddlers and more experienced adventure seekers the joys of getting out on the water. “I like the open water tours, but we’ve got a broad range of stuff,” says Jeff, who has led tours up and down the Rhode Island coast, and even out to Block Island from Charlestown. At nine miles, it’s not a trip for the faint of heart, but definitely sounds like a bucket list expedition for anyone willing to commit to learning the rules of the road… er, tide.

For the less experienced (or more cowardly, as is the case with this writer), moonlight paddles and eco-tours might be more agreeable options, though there are plenty of instructional opportunities at the Centre if you can’t resist the call of the wild. There’s also stand-up paddleboarding for various skill levels if you’re looking to make your Instagram followers jealous. “We started a little bit before the curve,” Jeff says of the stand-up paddleboard trend. “People didn’t really know what they were at the time, but it’s become a significant part of the business.” Kayak Centre recently moved from its three-building campus in Wickford to a larger, single location just up the street. Classes and boat launching still happen at the old location, but the new 5,000-squarefoot retail space means a bigger selection of boats and gear open all year long. –Tony Pacitti

ALL ABOARD

Ride the Rails From Wickford to Providence

RIDOT is offering free train rides from Wickford to Providence

What’s better than skipping traffic to get to downtown Providence? Doing it for free. Now through the end of the year, RIDOT will be offering free train rides from Wickford Junction to T.F. Green and Providence. There will be ten round-trips Monday through Friday – no ticket needed. RIDOT decided to offer the rides free of fare to encourage more people to take advantage of the train service, helping them avoid Route 4 traffic and the hassle of parking in downtown Providence. “Rhode Island ranks on the bottom when it comes to the percentage of travelers who use transit as opposed to cars, yet we have the infrastructure and train service to make it easy for people to get around our state without a car,” says RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, Jr.

While the free ride only takes you to Providence, travelers can purchase tickets to continue on to Boston and save a few bucks from the first leg of the trip. Our very own PVD, however, will be the hotspot for activity this summer, with Wickford Junction serving as a gateway to weekly performances by the Nightlife Orchestra on Federal Hill, WBRU’s free Summer Concert Series and Food Truck Fridays at Roger Williams Park Zoo. There will also be special events to check out this month, like Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (August 8-13) and NecronomiCon, the celebration of RI’s own HP Lovecraft (August 17). Spending the summer in the city just got a whole lot easier – and cheaper. –Megan Schmit August 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

So Happening So & So DI FFERENT STROKES

Stephen Cook Makes Art His Own Way Stephen Cook – artist and owner of OneWay Gallery (OneWayGallery. com) in Narragansett – paints his massive canvases with large, deliberate strokes of charcoal, occasionally mixed with polyurethane, Rustoleum, oil, aluminum or latex paint, graphite, and Elmer’s Glue. He’ll listen to music as he works, but needs to be careful to avoid a shift in genre that will impact the emotion funneling into his work: A change from Eric Prydz to Stone Temple Pilots, for instance, or from Rancid to Lorde ends up filtering into the art itself, as Stephen’s strokes follow the tempo – “similar to a conductor moving his arm,” he says. He will sometimes put songs or albums on repeat to avoid such disruption. Stephen describes his own work as “aggressive” and “movement-based,”

mixed media and large format. Some works incorporate vibrant natural elements like colorful petals and leaves juxtaposed with darkness; some are starkly black and white, with graffiti-style words or phrases provocatively integrated into fluid lines. The roots of Stephen’s artistic career go deep: He grew up around art, and his mother taught classes at his high school. “She taught me the importance of negative space, and how there are no mistakes in artwork,” Stephen says. “It’s funny how the little lessons stay with you. Once you get past the idea that you can make a mistake, it gives you more freedom.” Other influences include Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat, but Stephen credits a major turning point

Stephen Cook’s solo show opens this month at OneWay Gallery

to an offhand comment from professor Grant Hargate during his pursuit of a BFA at Lindenwood University in his home state of Missouri. Stephen already knew he wasn’t interested in drawing realistically, and that he loved foreshortening and understanding scale and volume, but wanted to do it “my own way,” he says. One day, as Stephen made aggressive charcoal marks on a large piece of paper, Hargate commented, “I can teach you about perspective, but I can’t teach you what you’re doing right now.” Like many, Stephen dreamed of moving to New York City, but his father was from Rhode Island and he’d been visiting since infancy, so he figured moving here after college would be easier and a step closer. One day, as he ate at Crazy Burger in

Narragansett, he asked his server about open studio space nearby; there happened to be a large building just a couple of doors down. There was so much space, in fact, that Stephen was able to found OneWay Gallery 14 years ago, which also hosts studio space for local artists and attracts clients from Boston, New York City, San Francisco and other major art cities. Stephen’s new August solo show, titled Automatic, captures his approach to art and movement and his philosophy that death is an “automatic” result of being born, and reveals a connection to the automatic drawing of the Dadaists and Surrealists. It runs from August 19 to September 30 at OneWay Gallery. –Amanda M. Grosvenor

Catch a Movie Under the Stars Summer days might belong to the beach, but summer nights are all about outdoor movies. In South County, there are plenty to go around. Head on over to Ocean House’s Movie Nights on the Beach (OceanHouseEvents.com) for dinner and a show every Tuesday from 7-10pm. Pick

your favorite selections from their build-your-own-pizza bar before settling into a lounge chair on the sand to watch films like The Secret Life of Pets (August 8) and Finding Dory (August 22). If you aren’t free on Tuesday nights, head on over to Weekapaug Inn

So Happening So & So SO BLOCK ISLAND

Ferry Captain Paul Svenevik Celebrates a Life on the Sea

Six trips, twelve hours

a day. Captains work long days at the helm, steering through weather and tides, delivering food, cars, bicycles, building supplies, beer and tens of thousands of people to Block Island. From the deck and wheelhouse, Paul Svenevik has watched the island ebb and flow through seasons, politics, purple flag days and seemingly endless, winding lines of passengers. Captaining the 177’ Carol Jean, Paul is continuing a family tradition of earning his living at sea. “He was the real deal,” Paul says of his dad, in an ode to the skills and sacrifices of being a sea captain in the Merchant Marines, travelling the world. “I always loved the ocean, being on it, being in it, being around it.” Fresh

18

SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2017

from URI with a degree in political science, Paul worked on a few commercial fishing boats, then for a time at the Fisherman’s Co-Op in Galilee, unloading and packing fish in a busy port. Each day fishermen streamed in and out, in boats large and small, to lands near and far. In 1984, after a year on the docks, he went to work for Interstate Navigation as a deckhand. For those interested in more than a summer job, the first years are an introduction to crowds, engines, lines and seas. Two years later he became a mate, opening him up to a world of learning to be a captain, of keeping passengers safe and building confidence enough to run his own boat. Then, after earning his 100-ton license, Paul became a captain, like his

father before him. Mirroring the island, the ferry used to be more open, more relaxed. Finding a milk carton and a square of diamond plate deck to sit on, passing cans of beer among those not willing to venture to upper decks, with their hard slat benches and airless cabins, was considered normal back when he started. Certainly much has changed, like the vessels themselves, the sheer numbers of people and security concerns. “Post 9/11, we have more restrictions, the Coast Guard does their inspections, the wheelhouse is off limits,” Paul says. He has seen spouting whales, sunning sharks and mountainous waves tall as wheelhouse windows and enjoyed a front row seat as Deep Water

Wind built the Block Island Wind Farm. He has passed those same fishing boats and captains heading for fishing grounds or returning with their holds full. The Carol Jean begins each day in Old Harbor, as does Paul. “I married an island girl, so now I live full time on the island,” he says. In 2008, Paul wed his most perfect mate, the hysterically entertaining, wiry-haired Cindy Lasser. Successful captains are often low-key characters; they share a focus on the sea, for steady is the best course when you’re responsible for precious cargos and people’s lives. Paul Svenevik, The Captain, has plotted the best course, with a love of life and a love of the sea. –Todd Corayer

or shore-ly inspired artists and designers, the beaches and coastline of South County provide oceans of inspiration as well as a spectacular supply of materials. Using media washed

ashore such as frosty sea glass, knotty driftwood and the quahog’s deep purple shell, these artists are as creative as they are resourceful in crafting their sea-utiful and sustainable works of art.

WOODN’T IT BE NICE

of The Woods Collective

Photography by Ron Cowie

The Westerly-based husband and wife duo behind The Woods Collective (Facebook: The Woods Collective), Zach and Sheena Gencarelle, collects driftwood of all shapes and sizes, including bark-like pieces, smoothened branches and sun-bleached logs washed ashore to create a variety of home decor. Their clocks, bookends and wall decorations, which include letters of the alphabet and name banners, are all made from locally sourced beach wood gathered from their coastal surroundings, including Weekapaug, Misquamicut and Napatree Point. Their business came out of the blue, so to speak, when Zach got the urge to make a unique gift for his wife Sheena by combining a dismantled vintage clock and a perfectly shaped piece of wood found on the Weekapaug shore. Despite having no previous experience in the process, his work of “heart” was enough of a success to start an online shop. Inspired by Zach’s thoughtful gift, Sheena began gathering smaller pieces of driftwood, shaping them into the letters that they’re equally well known for. Today, they draw their inspiration from watching their children play, listening to music and the natural beauty of where they live. Zach and Sheena’s work is available on Etsy.

Annie Ricke of Ocean State of Mind

IF YOU CATCH HER DRIFT Around five years ago, Ocean State of Mind RI (OceanStateOfMindRI. com) founder Annie Riecke started noticing the abundant amount of wood washing up on the shorelines near her home, in some cases littering local beaches. She decided to start collecting the driftwood and incorporating it into her various home decor pieces. After crafting some driftwood signs for charity, she realized her creations were as enjoyable to make as they were eco-friendly. Today Annie’s naturally nautical signs are a large portion of her work, as well as driftwood coasters, towel hooks and wooden gift tags which she crafts in her South Kingstown studio. Driven to find “new uses for the abundance already existing around us,” Annie’s creations are made with sustainability in mind first and foremost. Annie’s designs are available online, as well as at Serendipity in Wickford.

Allen Hazard of The Purple Shell

SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2017

Of all the colors found in nature, it’s the beautiful purple hues of the New England quahog shell that Allen Hazard enjoys most. The Purple Shell (Facebook: The Purple Shell) is a fitting name for his Charlestown shop, where you can find his Wampum jewelry and designs made in the traditional style of the Narragansett Nation. His Wampum, or Wampumpeg, pieces are inspired by his Narragansett heritage and the generations of family members who have passed down this art form. Using various parts of the shell, he creates tubular Wampum beads, Wampum belts and assorted pieces of jewelry including necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The darker the shell’s purple hue, the more desirable. Allen’s passion for this style of jewelry making began by watching his mother, aunts and uncles create traditional pieces, reproducing what the people of the Narragansett Nation wore years before the settlers landed on their shores. The beauty of the wampum shell has been amazing Allen for years now. Creating pieces “as the Narragansetts before me did,” he says, “is very special and something that I will never take lightly.” Allen’s work is available at The Purple Shell in Charlestown.

HONORING NATIVE TRADITION

A GLASS ACT There’s something about walking along the beach that can soothe the soul and help ease a weary mind. After Gwyneth Wilson (Facebook: Gwyneth Wilson Seaglass Artist) was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in the summer of 2012, she put her career on pause and moved to Block Island to live with her brother. Feeling lost without a job and routinely sick from the cancer treatments, she started walking the island’s beaches every day. She’d find sea glass on the shore, especially after a storm, and began collecting it. The sea glass scavenger hunt then progressed into jewelry making, a craft she would learn from her brother-in-law, a jewelry maker himself. Soon enough, she was selling her creations at art shows and farmers markets. Along with her jewelry designs, she now creates sea glass mosaics within floating frames and antique windows, using only authentic Block Island sea glass. Originating from old bottles and tableware discarded near piers and waste collection sites on the island, the glass eventually takes on a “frosty “ appearance, a result of the salt water’s pH level and erosion over time. The window frames act as a “canvas for the sea glass designs, with their colors reflecting the blues of the ocean, whites of the waves and greens of the bayberry bushes.” Gwyneth’s designs are available on Etsy, as well as the Block Island Farmers Market.

The tall ship Oliver Hazard Perry, the largest sailing school vessel in the States, takes student crews from Bermuda to the Arctic

SAIL INTO ADVENTURE The tall ship Oliver Hazard Perry teaches life lessons on the open sea There’s nothing quite like

watching a tall ship come up over the horizon, its square sails filled with wind, the bow gently heaving in the seas. It evokes an image of times past, when the world was still being explored and international travel meant sailing on the open ocean. Now, tall ships serve a different purpose. Some

are crafted to be historic replicas; others, like the Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP), are built in the same vein as classic tall ships, but contain modern conveniences and technologies in order to serve as state-of-the-art sailing school vessels. “I say it’s everything you love about tall ships and none of the things you don’t,” explains Jessica

Wurzbacher, executive director of the Newportbased non-profit Oliver Hazard Perry RI. Sailing school vessels carry no passengers. Instead, newcomers are considered trainees who are there to learn all aspects of seamanship. Some of the tangible skills they learn on board include how to climb the rigging, chart a course and be a good shipmate – but it’s the intangible qualities of life at sea that draw people in. “The goal isn’t to make square-rigged seamen out of a week at sea,” says Jessica. “It’s the other skills you learn that you can take back to any life. It’s the consideration for others, facing your

challenges, working together to do something that is seemingly difficult when you try to do it on your own, and the friendships you form when you’re on the boat.” These intangibles are especially useful to high school students, who are still building their interpersonal and leadership skills. In the short time the OHP has been at sea, several high schools around the state have sent students to embark on short-term voyages. This month, high school students, undergraduates and graduate students will compete to be part of an Arctic expedition led by scientists at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography that will sail through the Northwest Passage. “You’re with each other 24/7,” Jessica explains. “You’re going through challenging conditions and having new experiences together. The bonds that form are stronger than the ones you can form in the playground.” These bonds are critical not only to having a great experience, but also to taking care of the ship. There’s a saying on board: “Ship, shipmate, self.” It’s the correct process of decision making that’s instilled in the students from the moment they step on deck. When making a decision, students must first consider how it will affect the ship, which ultimately keeps everyone safe. Then

Strike a few sails, adjust the trim, take watch at the helm (rear) and bow (front) and eat breakfast.

they must consider their shipmates, ensuring that everyone supports each other. Finally, students must look out for themselves. Consider the extreme conditions out at sea: ship living can be wet, cold and tiring, with heavy sun exposure and potential dehydration. This code of conduct ensures that the community on the ship is strong and supportive, and encourages perseverance and empathy. Adults also benefit from the camaraderie: as Jessica puts it, “there’s no reason you can’t improve yourself whatever stage of life you’re at.” Some do a stint on the OHP after dreaming of trying their hand at sea; others are looking for a vacation with a purpose.

Off time: 8am-4pm

Charting New Courses

Catch up on a few hours of sleep, take classes from 10am-12pm, have lunch from 12-1pm, read or journal until 4pm.

This year the OHP has ocean voyages planned up and down the East Coast. So far it’s gone to Cuba and Bermuda. This month it’s heading to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland on the way to the Arctic Circle. By the time autumn comes around, the OHP will be making its way back to Newport from the Arctic. While students are trained in basic seamanship skills on every voyage, the classes offered on board vary between trips. On the way to and from Bermuda, trainees had the chance to learn about meteorology, marine weather and celestial navigation; for the latter, Jessica explains, “you need to see the horizon so that you can shoot

Each day, everyone participates in a 24-hour rotation where you’ll have four hours on watch, and eight hours off. Here’s how one watch schedule could be structured.

the angle of the stars, the sun and the planets.” The climate can also vary dramatically from one trek to the next. Jessica is particularly fascinated with the Arctic jaunt. She’s been studying it for months, “looking at pictures of the giant cliff faces, narwhals, belugas and polar bears,” and it still blows her away. “It’s an extreme and exciting environment,” she says. The trip is also a historic one. The OHP will be the first tall ship to head to the Arctic through the Northwest Passage in over 100 years. “It’s kind of scary that we can do this considering what’s happened to our planet,” Jessica admits. “We really shouldn’t be able to do this. It should be completely frozen.” Temperatures could fall into the 30s or rise into the 60s and the intensity of the sun requires sunscreen and lip balm, with 24 hours of daylight at the beginning of the passage. By the end in September, a little bit of a night time will allow students to observe the stunning Northern Lights. “How many people have that on their bucket list?” Jessica asks. “And to see that from the deck of a boat? The deck of a tall ship? It’s just a completely different world.” This year’s ocean voyages are just the beginning for the OHP. With each trip, a new set of trainees learn by doing and take those experiences with them for life. As Jacques Cousteau said, “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net forever.” August 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

moved here for the school system… and the quality of life.” That’s what dozens upon dozens of East Greenwich homeowners have said to me for Life/Style home features in this magazine for more than a decade. Many of these couples moved to this town from other parts of the state, but outsiders from New York and Texas to Ireland have also quickly learned of its enviable reputation. Today, East Greenwich is more than just favorable statistics. There’s a palpable energy in this West Bay waterfront town which has quickly emerged as the food destination in South County – just look at the line out the door on any given Sunday at Dante’s – while a charming arts and culture scene and welcoming mom-and-pop shops make East Greenwich the best it has ever been.

WINE & D I N E

In true Rockwellian form, the heartbeat of the hopping East Greenwich scene is Main Street. “When we moved here 10 years ago, Main Street was a little more sleepy,” says local resident Amy Moore, who today serves as the Main Street Coordinator at the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce. “Yes, there was a core to it… diners that have been there forever, basic restaurants, some retail stores, but nothing like it is today. We used to go to Providence or Newport for dinner and now, we never leave East Greenwich.” John Sepulveda got to know the nooks and crannies of Main Street when he’d stroll the area to kill time while his daughter took karate lessons at a local studio. Along with his business partner Mitchell Waterman, Sepulveda was looking to open a new restaurant and it didn’t take long for the two to pinpoint exactly where it should be. “I always got a great vibe from the business owners, the residents, the people here,” he says. “The quality of the restaurants coming here were superior compared to other parts of the state. East Greenwich has really become a food destination more than just a restaurant destination.” Sepulveda says he didn’t want their restaurant anywhere else but Main Street, so he and

Waterman “built Feast’s concept around what was already doing well here.” Feast Sandwich Company opened late last year and has won over the hearts – and palates – of locals and visitors alike, starting with a 20-item menu rooted in comfort foods with a modern twist. “We’ve gotten an amazing reception – it’s almost overwhelming,” Sepulveda says. But it’s also well earned. Local brews are available, the casual restaurant has a reputation for excellent service, including accommodating dietary restrictions as much as possible, and it operates well into the night. “We were here constantly when we opened – we never left,” Sepulveda laughs. “But we aggregated that data from the first few months,” concluding that they could operate most successfully by maintaining 11am to 11pm hours and even later on the nights when the Greenwich Odeum has shows. Jason Kindness, a native of Newport and founder of The Kind Spirits craft cocktail consulting, had earned a stellar reputation around his hometown for turning out savory, creative cocktails at a number of popular restaurants and bars in the City by the Sea. But the master mixologist was intrigued when he met Marshall Muir and his wife Nadya, part owners of Kai on East Greenwich’s Main Street, which opened in

January; he saw that something extraordinary was happening at the restaurant and he wanted in. Kindness is now one of a handful of owners. “I feel like it’s an area, a vibe, that’s picking up,” says Kindness. “People are interested in getting good quality food and cocktails at a place that’s forward thinking without having to go to Providence or Newport.” He’s also noticed Rhode Islanders from near and far patronizing Kai as well as its surrounding bars and restaurants. “We see people from Providence, Newport, South Kingstown, a lot of people from Warwick and South County – it’s a melting pot that’s really starting to take shape.” Kindness credits a few motivating factors for the flourishing foodie scene. First, he says, East Greenwich’s location, with easy access to many of the most populous parts of the state, makes it an attractive locale. Second, his fellow business owners are “pro-community,” he says, with a shared “rising tide floats all boats” philosophy, supporting and often co-promoting one another. And finally, each and every restaurant, bar, bistro and shop offers a unique experience. Kai, for example, was intentionally designed to be both chic and welcoming, says Kindness, marrying a New York City metropolitan feel with a “beachy” twist, with bench-style seating to invite co-mingling. “People can interact with each other but other patrons as well,” Kindness

points out. “People intermingle. That’s something you don’t see in a lot of places.” One of Kai’s nearby neighbors, Besos Kitchen & Cocktails, a chic, upscale restaurant serving locally sourced New American fare and craft cocktails, will be marking its sixth anniversary in October. Owner Kristin Dellagrotta used to feel like the new kid on the block, but she’s witnessed numerous new businesses emerge since opening her doors. “It just keeps getting better and better,” she says. “I feel it’s ‘the more the merrier’ here because it makes us a restaurant destination. We all know each other and we all have different visions for our places.” Dellagrotta grew up in East Greenwich and is raising her own family here. But she says the town is more than just families now, pointing to the hot new construction trend of “cool lofts” and apartments that is increasingly luring singles, couples and millennials to town. All demographics, she adds, are enjoying the mom-and-pop shops, galleries and cultural centers like the Odeum, which have truly improved the experience the town offers for locals and guests alike. “We definitely pull from all over; a lot of people from out of town – New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts; but our staple customers Monday through Wednesday are locals and regulars.” Despite all the hotspots, East Greenwich’s most well-known restaurant may be Jigger’s, a no-frills,

all-American, historic boxcar diner. The business dates back to 1917 and the shiny, slim boxcar you see today, built by the Worcester Dining Car Company, rolled off a flatbed truck and onto its current foundation in 1950. As the story goes, Main Street was closed off for the occasion and a band trumpeted the new restaurant’s arrival. Jigger’s serves up home-style dishes you’d expect to find in a traditional “greasy spoon”: corned beef hash, classic bacon cheeseburgers and authentic Rhode Island johnnycakes made from stone-ground cornmeal straight from Kenyon Grist Mill in nearby West Kingston. But the owners are also cognizant of East Greenwich’s growing and diverse dining scene and have added more contemporary dining choices – spinach and quinoa potato latkes, eggs Benedict served with sweet potato and black bean hash – and a gluten-conscious menu to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions. This time of year, East Greenwich’s waterfront restaurant scene is an entity all its own. Zack Chelo, manager of BLU On The Water, has paid close attention to the growth happening in the town’s business district since the restaurant opened five years ago, observing that the customer base has exponentially expanded. “We’ve been busier with each season. However, there’s more competition than ever and that’s not because these businesses

are failing; the clientele is there to support them and as a result, they’re thriving.” Initially Chelo saw mostly local clientele; now “we draw guests from all over the region,” partly, he says, because “East Greenwich has become more of a destination than it had been in years past” due to its dining diversity, friendly staffs and undeniable charm. “It’s finally on the map as a premier Rhode Island destination. It offers the unique, hometown feel of Main Street and also a waterfront scene like few cities can offer.” Joe Zito, an East Greenwich resident best known throughout Southern New England as the eponymous “TV Maitre d’” of a television program highlighting the dining rooms and kitchens of the area’s best restaurants, has watched the restaurant boom unfold on Main Street, the waterfront and beyond. “I think it’s almost an embarrassment of culinary riches,” he says, pointing to Siena, T’s Restaurant, Meritage, Richard’s Pub and 1149 – “and we’re not even into the town proper yet!” – as well as Red Stripe, Besos, La Masseria, Rocco’s Bistro, Kon’s Asian Bistro, Rasa, Dante’s Kitchen, Jigger’s, Greenwich Oyster Bar, the Grille on Main, Johnny Granata’s Restaurant & Bar and Franki & John From Italy. “The waterfront of course has Finn’s Harborside, Nautika and Blu – all of this is within a mile and a half square – and I probably forgot a few!” Though Zito revels in the restaurant scene, which he praises for its outstanding cuisine led by talented chefs, he does have concerns about the sustainability of the growing number of restaurants and wonders if the area is at maximum capacity. “If they keep opening restaurants, it will be survival of the fittest,” he says, especially if the population decreases or stays level. All are competing around dinner service, the lifeblood of the East Greenwich dining scene. “Gone are the days of three-martini lunches,” Zito points out. “But these restaurateurs, they are certainly putting their best foot forward.”

Since 1926, the Greenwich Odeum has been considered Rhode Island’s Main Street theatre. Originally the Greenwich Theater, it was built when vaudeville acts dominated the entertainment industry but was one of the first theatres to show motion pictures, which eventually became its sole focus. The Greenwich Odeum was shuttered in 1990, reestablished in 1994, then extensively renovated in 2013: this renovation and a change in oversight has helped the theatre thrive, and today it plays a critical role in East Greenwich’s bustling business climate. “You don’t have a lot of walkable communities like this,” says Dan Speca, president of the Odeum. While the theatre is benefiting from increased interest and foot traffic in East Greenwich, Speca says, the benefit goes both ways: “When we have a sold-out show on a Friday or Saturday night, we see places booming.” There’s a cooperative spirit, says Speca, that’s helping the town thrive. Recently, he called The Grille on Main to make a dinner reservation before a night out at the theatre; the hostess made sure to ask if his party planned on attending that night’s Odeum show “to make sure you get out on time.” That community cooperation, Speca says, is an example of what sets East Greenwich apart. “It shows that the restaurants here want to accommodate people accordingly. We’re all in this together. The more we succeed, the more you succeed.” Main Street Coordinator Amy Moore says that

36

the area’s success has been, not a stroke of luck, but the result of a concerted effort, hard work and dedication on behalf of the business community. “We have a meeting once a month with the merchants and through that, we talk about what’s working, what’s not, we make strategic plans, and talk about events they may want to do,” says Moore. “The merchants really connect and want to cross-market each other, and everyone is doing well. Restaurants are doing the best, no question about that.” Monthly Main Street Strolls focus on festive themes, showcasing local artists, musicians and performers. Moore reports that nearly all of the restaurants are at capacity and many have a waitlist on Stroll evenings, while shopkeepers extend their business hours and stay open late for strollers. “This is a place people are really starting to come to appreciate,” says Moore. “I think when you look at America and how many main streets are actually left, there aren’t many. This is a gem – a quintessential American Main Street.”

WORTH THE WAIT Katie Whiting and Richard Russell searched long and hard for their first home. Upon discovering an outdated house near Green Hill Beach, they knew they had found it. They went all-

in on the fixer-upper, which is now a gorgeous, beach-inspired space named Driftwood Cottage that they intend to call home for years to come. Read about the transformation in Life/Style.

Beach Vibes All Year Long It’s long been said

that anything worth having is worth waiting for. Katie Whiting and Richard Russell came to understand this aphorism when the young couple embarked on the hunt for their first home a little more than four years ago. Like most first-time home buyers, the two had a modest price range but were eager and optimistic. “When my husband and I first started house hunting, we knew we wanted to get as close to the beach as possible while, of course, staying in our budget,” says Katie. Patience would indeed prove to be a virtue during their tireless (to say the least) search throughout South County. “It took 16 months and four rejected offers until we found our little Driftwood Cottage – the name

we’ve given our home,” says Katie. On the plus side, the three-bedroom, one-bathroom, 1,400-squarefoot ranch in South County is located just a mile from Green Hill Beach, the couple’s favorite spot, and it is easy to see why. The hidden gem is a quiet, private, family beach and is known for its beautiful and diverse shoreline (it’s technically three beaches) bordered by a lush landscape that cascades down a rolling hill to meet Block Island Sound. While the home’s location was incredible, “charming” may not have been the best word to describe the house itself, which boasted decades-old features like green linoleum tiles and pink countertops. But that didn’t deter Katie and Russ. In fact, it delighted them. “We knew we

wanted a project house – something that needed all the cosmetic changes under the sun – and we got just that,” says Katie. Soon after being handed the keys to cottage, they got to work. “The house quickly became our labor of love,” Katie remembers. “And while most people probably would have shuddered at the thought of it, we lived through all the construction, done by just the two of us on weekends and vacations, and loved every minute.” The kitchen area weathered the most dramatic changes, going from a boxy, cramped space to an open floor plan where the dining, kitchen and living areas merge together seamlessly. The new design allows for a more natural flow and added

space to relax or entertain. The couple enhanced the space with carefully chosen details, including a pair of beautifully crafted, carved corbels that flank the open living and dining area. “[They] were a birthday gift from Russ to me that I’d been drooling over for months,” says Katie. They also selected high-impact upgrades including light fixtures from Restoration Hardware and a white marble bar top on their kitchen island – a space where guests intrinsically seem to gather. Open shelving in the kitchen lends a clean, contemporary feel while accessories like an antique scale and wooden stools give the space character and texture. (And pieces like the Rhode Island-shaped cutting board re-

mind you of this couple’s love of and loyalty to the Ocean State.) Russ and Katie have carefully chosen well-built furnishings throughout the years that offer longevity, including a number of antiques. “One of our favorite spots for antiques and where we purchased our prized dining table is Verdigris on Main Street in Wakefield,” says Katie. “They have great finds and consistently stay on top of the trends in the world of antiques. It’s a good mix of old and new. Everything in our home has a story.” Thankfully, Russ and Katie share similar tastes in just about everything, and

while the couple, both Connecticut transplants (though Russ spent his childhood summers in Charlestown), share a passion for classic pieces, they also celebrate their adopted home in the coastal seat of Rhode Island. “I’d call our style ‘coastal bohemian’,” says Katie. “Understated coastal accents, antiques everywhere we can fit them and a comfortable eclectic feeling in every corner.” Katie and Russ are both avid surfers and love the sea; Russ always knew he wanted to spend his life here, Katie says, and she didn’t take much convincing. That shared passion means there’s no shortage of

rocks and sea shells around the house from the newlyweds’ endless beach walks. “Or ‘treasure hunts,’ as we like to call them,” says Katie. “Most of the design and decor pieces we have, I purchased as ‘surprises’ for my husband. We have an agreement that if he ever hates anything I bring home, I’ll just return it, but that hasn’t happened yet!” Katie spends a lot of time on Pinterest and Instagram looking for inspiration. “And I’m always changing things around and incorporating new finds,” she says. Katie has recorded the progress of Driftwood Cottage and her adventures shared with Russ

on Instagram as @Driftwoodgypsy. Throughout the entire multi-layered process, Russ found a new passion for construction and renovation—and a new career. He started his own contracting business, Coastal Renovations, in South County. Just when the couple thought their work was nearly done, they found a new project is on the horizon, and one with a strict deadline: a nursery. “South County is home and always will be,” says Katie. “We love it here and with a baby on the way, we can’t wait for our children to grow up in this place we are so lucky to call home.” August 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Fashion on a Roll

Missie Yachimski of Post & Grove on Rhode Island essentials and her mobile boutique Missie Yachimski didn’t let a ceiling and four walls form her ideas on fashion. Always dreaming of opening a boutique, she decided to go out on a limb and try her hand at a rolling store that would bring clothes to the client. Post & Grove is now a reality, an old red laundry truck with all sorts of accessories and items for men and women on board. We spoke with Missie about her truck and style inspirations.

Photography by Meghan H. Follett

Tell me what led you to own a mobile boutique. Growing up I loved fashion and styling, but designing not so much. I had countless visions in my head and I enjoyed hunting for the pieces. I remember, as an only child, I would dress up my dolls (of which there were a lot) for “parties and gatherings,” and get annoyed when the outfits didn’t look right for the event. As I think about it now, it seems that fashion was always an undertone for me. My friends and I all had humble beginnings working local retail in places like Abercrombie & Fitch. Now these friends hold positions in the fashion industry like buyer for Fred Segal and top floral designer for The Four Seasons Hotel in LA. But it wasn’t until some nudging from my inner circle and my umpteenth breakdown working in corporate that I took the leap to pursue my happiness – fashion. I had never been more scared in my life. As the days passed, the tears and fears turned into smiles, along with the hope and excitement I had been craving in a career. The fact that I now had to become the boss, a buyer, a truck driver, a mechanic, a business owner and a thousand other titles did not deter me. How did you decide on a clothing truck? It gives me the financial freedom to pursue my dreams that a brick-andmortar location just couldn’t. When I began to think about opening a store of my own, I had trouble finding a location that seemed like the right place for me. The costs and fees as well as making the place a destination to shop were

Any one item with this coupon Missie Yachimski daunting. So when a friend mentioned seeing successful mobile boutiques on the West Coast, I found an old laundry truck for sale and decided to bite the bullet. With some TLC from friends, I tore it apart to create this boutique you see today, dressing room included. What can we discover inside? Post & Grove carries new and timeworn clothing and accessories for men and women. Items range from vintage Levi’s jeans, Red Wing boots and beard oil to aviator glasses, trucker hats, Lilly Pulitzer skirts, cashmere sweaters, bags, belts and candles. You can come in for an entire outfit head to toe, or just find that perfect accessory that complements your look and becomes your “new favorite.” Each item is handpicked to ensure quality and that unique feel so the customer doesn’t have to feel like they look like everyone else. What’s your favorite place to look for inspiration when buying pieces for the truck? Everywhere from amazing, accomplished designers and people on the street to estate sales. Ralph Lauren is one of my go-to’s for his timeless classic Americana look that reminds me of the New England that I grew up in. Lilly

Pulitzer is great for her use of color and patterns, and she makes it feel normal to wear your pearls all year. Tom Ford is a favorite for the simple elegance he projects. These designers all have pieces that stand the test of time and are never out of style. Those perfectly broken-in jeans people compliment you on all the time. That cashmere cable-knit sweater you grab time and time again because it fits like it was made for you. That is at the heart of what I want to offer people. Classic Americana with a time-worn twist. What’s on your summer essentials wardrobe list? I was reading a fashion article a while back and the author described her summer style as “the shipwrecked Kennedys.” That pretty much sums up my style ideas for the New England summer and what I aspire to offer: sun-bleached, white tees, lightweight cashmere sweaters for cool beach nights, faded seersucker shorts that used to be pants, anything madras, perfectly cut blazers in a lightweight fabric, Nantucket rope bracelets your mother would have to cut off you at the end of the summer, flip flops or loafers, pearls and a tan. Where can we find Post & Grove this summer? We’ll be hitting the road all over the place. Local festivals and flea markets, a few concerts here and there. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to find us!

Sandra Chevalier is petite, with a bright smile and friendly demeanor, but she could toss you like a rag doll. Her fiance and business partner Brett Robichaud reminds me of Parks and Rec’s Chris Traeger – clean cut, upbeat and relentlessly positive – but if necessary, he could choke you out in seconds. Both are black belts in judo and together they run Elevate Judo and Jiu Jitsu in Exeter. The seeming incongruity of their cheery dispositions and their effortless ability to dispatch opponents encapsulates the spirit of their martial art. The word “judo” literally means “the gentle way.” It is a combat sport that allows two competitors to grapple, throw and pin each other with full force, but without anyone getting hurt. Moreover, one of its main principles is “maximum efficiency, minimum effort,” which means that practitioners favor technique, balance and speed over brute force in subduing their opponents. It’s the principle that allows Sandra to take Brett, who stands a full head taller than her, and toss him to the ground with the casual ease of flipping a light switch. (Such is her control that when our photographer was having trouble capturing the speed of the action, she very matter-of-factly offered, “I can slow it down or even pause in the middle if it will help you.”) Judo is a modern martial art, adapted from the hand-to-hand combat techniques of samurai and feudal warriors to create a safe method of physical competition. It relies on grappling, throws, chokeholds and submission locks rather than kicking or punching, and there are no weapons. The goal is to defeat your opponent, but not harm them. My first lesson at Elevate was also my first judo lesson, period, so Brett took me through the basics. Contrary to the impression you may have

from watching the Olympics, the fundamental element of judo is not throwing your opponent. Quite the opposite: one of the core philosophies of the sport is Ukemi, or, “the art of falling.” “This, in reality, is the most important lesson that I can give,” Brett explained. “If I can teach you how to fall safely and gracefully, I can then teach you how to complete techniques effectively without the fear of getting hurt.” I spent a considerable portion of my hour-plus with Brett and Sandra simply falling onto my back repeatedly – as did the students there for their regular class. Starting from a crouched position, I simply flopped myself back onto the mat over and over again, until I started to get the point. Brett also walked me through the building blocks of a simple forward roll. As he explained, mastering those two simple abilities can spare you a world of pain both on the judo mat and out in the world. Another of the basic judo techniques

Elevate Judo and Jiu Jitsu 567 South Country Trail, Unit 207, Exeter 632-9442 ElevateDojo.com

we practiced was called “shrimping,” in which I scooted back and forth while curled up on my side, almost in the fetal position. It looks (and sounds) silly taken out of context, but it is an essential building block in judo’s ground techniques, something that would come in handy in short order. Minutes later, Brett paired me with a sparring partner. Never have I gone so quickly from shaking someone’s hand to attempting to pin him to the ground. We worked on several attacks and defenses to be employed from the seemingly disadvantaged position of lying on your back with an opponent looming over you. Brett walked me through a series of simple postures, counters and holds that could be combined to turn the tables and pin one’s opponent into submission. “Each movement is like a chess piece, a calculated move that is part of an overall strategy towards the end: the checkmate,” he explained. “Judo really is about problem solving and pattern recognition.” There is an old Japanese proverb that says, “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” It’s intended to convey the ideas of resilience and persistence, but at Elevate Judo, it could double as the first step to learning the gentle way.

Fetch RI has moved to a new space with the same great service and same great items – and room for more of each. Owner Johnna Devereaux, a certified canine and feline nutritionist, believes in an organic, holistic approach to pet health and is ready to give you advice on how to keep your pets at their best. As she puts it: “I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to get them to the next level of health.” With over 20 years of experience with herbal remedies,

Johnna can easily help with digestion and allergy issues. Pets are welcome in the store and on any given day there will be many canine visitors mingling, playing and, of course, getting a treat. Belly up to the raw bar for delicacies like dried turkey necks and codfish skins. After that, swing into the toy room and pick up a new ball or a stuffed friend. Finish off your visit with a stroll through the accessories room and choose from a

colorful array of collars and leashes, food bowls and dog clothes, including a T-shirt with a hilarious, exclusive Don Bousquet cartoon design. (Hint: It involves the Towers in Narragansett.) From nutritional supplements to raw food to fermented goat’s milk, health takes priority at Fetch. “If I won’t feed it to my own pets, I won’t carry it in the store,” says Johnna. She does the research – you get the peace of mind.

THE MOST DELICIOUS ALGEBRA PROBLEM Here’s some summer homework for you: What do you get when you combine 20 scoops of ice cream, six toppings, two cookies, two brownies, three cups of whipped cream and one cherry? The Spinnakers Cafe Big Beach Bucket (SpinnakersCafe.com). “We started it about five years ago as a tribute to one of my favorite Food Network shows, Man vs. Food,” says owner Mike Ridge. Mike

designed the dessert as a one-person challenge – “We usually get about 15 to 20 people per season who try it, but only five have completed it” – but lots of families get it to share. Those who tackle the entire bucket, by themselves and in 30 minutes, earn a free t-shirt and a place in the Jamestown cafe’s Hall of Fame. And the ice cream headache? That’s just a bonus.

The Best Kept Foodie Secret Off the beaten path, Jim’s Dock does clam shack classics right It is difficult to

Swordfish Tacos

cover-ups are the norm. One of the things people love about Jim’s Dock is its BYOB policy. You can bring anything you want to drink and there is no corkage fee. On the night I visited with my family, we brought a cooler packed with a variety of Nantucket’s Cisco beers. On past visits, the Place family has brought wine

and even fixings for fresh margaritas. Since I have relatives with an East Matunuck beach house, Jim’s Dock is a family favorite. In Rhode Island, a clam shack is only as good as its clam cakes and chowder, so we started with a cup of Rhode Island Clear Chowder ($5) and a half dozen clam cakes ($6). Jim’s chowder

was more flavorful than some other clear chowders I’ve sampled, owing to plenty of smoky bacon. The clam cakes were, in a word, awesome. They were freshly fried, so the outside was extremely crisp, and there were plenty of clams embedded in the tender cake batter. As if that wasn’t enough, we also split a Point Judith Stuffed Quahog ($4). What set this enormous stuffie apart from others was its perfectly crispy topping, and at $4, it was a bargain. Before our main courses arrived, we also tried a Greek Calamari Special ($14), which was delicious. The calamari was lightly fried and accompanied by feta cheese, olives, sautéed spinach and diced tomatoes. Since there were five of us dining, we were able to try a wide variety of meals. I had the Lobster Salad ($21): a plain green salad (lettuce, sliced tomatoes, rings of white onion and a balsamic vinaigrette) topped with a cup and a half of delicious lobster meat lightly dressed with mayonnaise and a hint of lemon. There were no pesky vegetables hiding among the lobster – just the way I like it. My mother ordered the Harvest Salad with Grilled Salmon ($19): walnuts, mandarin oranges and dried cranberries tossed with mixed greens and well-cooked fish. My brother had the Grilled Tuna Steak ($22), which

find truly hidden gems among Rhode Island’s restaurants. For one thing, the state is so small that nothing is really hidden. For another, people want to keep the hidden gems under wraps. When I told family and friends what I was planning to write about this month, the reaction was not great. “We love it,” everyone said. “But we don’t want anyone else to find out about it.” Despite their protests, I have decided to share with you one of Rhode Island’s best kept secrets: Jim’s Dock. Jim’s Dock is located on Succotash Road in South Kingstown. You are probably familiar with the road, having passed it en route to the Matunuck Oyster Bar and East Matunuck State Beach. Jim’s Dock is on the righthand side, about a half mile past the beach. It is the quintessential dockside seafood shack. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with amazing views of Point Judith. If you get a kick out of the Block Island Ferry, you’ll be glad to know that your meal will be punctuated by its comings and goings. The place is more rustic than fancy, but its comfortable, casual vibe is pleasant after a day at the beach; sandy feet and swimsuit

was served with a choice of potato (he chose French fries) and mixed vegetables (carrots and broccoli). My father went a little wild and ordered the Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple Kabobs ($17). He thought the shrimp paired well with the sweet, caramelized, grilled pineapple. The kabobs were served with mixed vegetables and a very garlicky risotto. A family friend we brought along for her first trip to Jim’s Dock ordered the Fish and Chips ($15), the fish battered and fried expertly, and not too thick. My friend also loved the French fries and the cole slaw on the side. At Jim’s Dock, the desserts are all homemade. The night we were

there, there was a choice of blueberry, key lime or coconut cream pie. After all we had eaten (there were no leftovers), we decided to split the Blueberry Pie ($5). The piece was large enough that all five of us managed to get several bites each. It was topped with two giant scoops of vanilla ice cream, the perfect end to a summertime meal. When “the summer wind comes blowing in from across the sea,” be sure to pack up the family and head to Jim’s Dock. Bring a cooler of local beer and wave to the people waiting for a table at Matunuck Oyster Bar on your way. Oh… and don’t tell too many people about this hidden Rhode Island gem.

On average, about 60 percent of the seafood vendors are local. “We encourage local restaurants and vendors to participate in the festival,” explains Heather Paliotta, executive director of Charlestown’s Chamber of Commerce. It’s the Chamber that spearheads the festival every year. “The aquaculture industry is rapidly growing in southern Rhode Island,

Matunuck Oyster Bar’s Summer Celebration On August 21 and 22, Matunuck Oyster Bar (RhodyOysters.com) is hosting a farm dinner series as part of Eat Drink RI’s 2017 Land and Sea Culinary Experiences. tour of his seven-acre shellfish farm. The farm itself provides the restaurant with a rich array of locally raised oysters and clams. During the tour, there will be a raw bar available on the skiff with shellfish plucked right out of the water. After disembarking, guests will be treated to a four-course dinner paired with wine and beer at the adjacent organic vegetable farm overlooking the pond. On August 21, chef Rick Allaire from Warren’s Metacom Kitchen will be preparing the dinner and on August 22, chef Derek Wagner from Providence’s Nick’s on Broadway will take the helm. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate summer’s bounty and to get a closer look at where the restaurant’s food comes from.

and as a result several local vendors are on hand at the event to serve up fresh raw bar items like oysters and littleneck clams.” To balance out all the seafood, typical fair foods are on offer as well, including hamburgers, hot dogs, kettle corn, funnel cakes and cotton candy, along with unexpected treats such as alligator tail. Festival goers are serenaded each

day by local bands, a DJ and folks belting out karaoke. After chowing down on all the fresh seafood, there’s plenty more to do and see: artists with their crafts on display, kayaking, bungee jumping (best to do before eating), a rock wall, various amusement park rides and camping available for RVs. And the fireworks display on Saturday is always a blast.

A Taste of Providence in Westerly

Westerly recently added a Providence staple to its dining scene: Providence Coal Fired Pizza (ProvidenceCoalFiredPizza.com). The pizzeria is known for thin and crispy crust, as well as its house-made sausage, fresh mozzarella and basil, truffle oil and other savory toppings. Finish off your meal with a cannoli, butterscotch pudding or a cappuccino.

Wine and Dine Chef Matthew MacCartney packs big-city wine into Jamestown Fish Wine Spectator’s two-glass Best of Award of Excellence, according to the magazine, is given to the restaurant that qualifies as a “destination for serious wine lovers.” The list of winners in Rhode Island has but four names. While one might expect the likes of Castle Hill to seek to impress well-heeled guests with its wine list, the excellence of Chef Matthew MacCartney’s Jamestown Fish flies under the radar. At this intimate location, wine isn’t a commitment to luxury so much as a reflection of the personal passion and life-long learning of its owner and executive chef. Matthew’s resume is seriously impressive, boasting time in the kitchens of Michelinstarred restaurants abroad, as well as high-profile work in New York City at the Gramercy Tavern and as beverage director at Tom Colicchio’s Craft. Jamestown Fish distills all of this experience, with wine at the heart of Matthew’s vision for the restaurant. We talked about the study of wine, the curation of a wine list and the regrettable reputation of Riesling.

Jamestown Fish 14 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown 423-3474 JamestownFish.com

out well, and in 2001 Tom Colicchio asked me to do his wine program at Craft. They actually paid for my last year of study. So all in all, from 1992 to 2002, I finished the diploma. Even with hundreds of wines, do you focus on particular areas? In a restaurant that is fish-oriented, I’m looking toward wines that are more delicate and focused, not the big, brooding, fruit-forward wines of the New World. I tend to focus on things with bright acidity that are food friendly, and fish friendly, and have a lot of umami. You’ll see a passion for Burgundy, both red and white, at a big range of prices, from $50 to $6,000 a bottle. They last a long time, many improve over time, and they go with a lot of different foods. Over the years Burgundy has become a passion for

many people, the ultimate classic. I also have a passion for Italy as well, and think there’s a lot of great value there, and diversity. Even in the Barolos, you can bridge that gap with red wines that go with fish, in specific dishes. What about including recognizable names, playing to the crowd? That’s never, ever been how I do it; from my days working with Paul Grieco at Gramercy Tavern, I was encouraged to choose wines that are great, that express the variety and region. It’s not about a label, or marketability. We have people here to talk about the wine with you; that is where the service aspect comes in, to help navigate a wine list like we have. You might not recognize any of the names, but we’re going to find you a wine you like, at the price you want. The beautiful thing about what I do is that over time, when you get to know people, they start to trust you, and you create this rapport with a guest where “you know what I like” is all they have to say. You can give them pretty much anything that fits

that description. How do you figure out what makes the cut? If we have 650 wines on the list, there are probably three times as many wines that I tasted in order to narrow that down. I taste constantly, and buy very little. I’m open to seeing every rep that comes in and just looking at stuff. I get tons of offers, but most things don’t make it on. I want that quality. Are there wines that people think they don’t like, that they do? The biggest one is Riesling – Riesling has such a reputation from 1970, you know, being sweet. That’s so not the case. There is so much Riesling that will rip the enamel off your teeth with the acidity and the brightness and not be at all sweet, from most places in the world except Germany. And even Germany is drying their wines more. In Austria, Australia, upstate New York, Canada, it’s dry Riesling. But it can’t seem to shake that sweet thing. It’s really ruined the reputation of that wine. August 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

You seem to have decided early on that you wanted to understand both the world of the kitchen and the world of wine. What was the trajectory of your study of wine? I had taken a wine class back at New York City Technical College, and on a transfer semester in the UK, I took the WSET [Wine & Spirit Education Trust] level one course. I continued with it back in the states while still working in the kitchen, and I really liked it. When it came to the third level, the diploma, I decided the only way I’d really be able to do this would be to step away from the kitchen and dive into wine 100 percent. Gramercy Tavern gave me a job, where I would learn the front of the house and be able to focus on wine, touching bottles, looking at labels, tasting with people, all of that. That worked

on Main Street in East Greenwich, Rasa is Chef Dhar’s newest restaurant. Rasa is a Sanskrit word meaning “essence” – and the idea is truly reflected in the gorgeous interior of the restaurant, the irresistible smells that waft onto the sidewalk, and the excellent cuisine available inside. Open every day for both lunch and dinner, Rasa serves food with refined Indian flavors. There are vegetarian (and vegan) options like Artichoke and Vegetable Uttapam, with a rice pancake, corn, carrots, onion and cilantro; meat dishes like a whole Tandoori chicken in its classic yogurt, ginger, garlic and yellow chili marinade, and Kashmiri Lamb Kofta meatballs with pistachio and a yogurt sauce; and seafood like Lobster Hawa Mahal, prepared with onion, tomato, ginger and green chili, or Tamarind Salmon, grilled with coriander, cumin and a tamarind glaze.

The Dorrance

Photography by James Jones

The Dorrance has been making waves on both the local and national culinary scenes since it opened in 2011, landing on Bon Appetit’s Top 50 New Restaurants list, and being nominated for a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in the Country. The dinner menu offers curated, artisan foods from Rhode Island and around the globe, the bar menu has fun, casual options and the desserts are always creative and seasonal. No experience at The Dorrance is complete without a cocktail. As soon as the doors open and until their late-night closing time, their bar is full of patrons who return time and again for The Dorrance’s flavorful libations. Their cocktail menu features inventive, surprising spirits, where no choice is expected and all of them are delicious. The Dorrance is widely regarded as having some of the best in the city.

So Entertaining

DOWN-HOME FUN ON THE FARM It’s time to get down on the farm. The Washington County Fair (WashingtonCountyFair-RI.com), coming back August 16-20, has been going strong since 1967. The festival happens in Richmond, and features amusement park rides, tons of music and games, and agricultural and livestock contests – plus a Battle of the Fishermen. If awarding blue

ribbons to show pigs doesn’t get your feet stomping… that’s your problem. There will also be toe-tapping live country music acts all weekend long, including Billy Gilman, Sundance Head, Alec MacGillivray and Runaway June. All that, in addition to 20 food-vendors and over 100 crafters – well, that’s some real down-home fun.

So Entertaining Calendar

THE MUST LIST 10 essential events happening this month

1.

Through August 12: Theatre By the Sea (TheatreByTheSea.com) invites you to be their guest at Beauty and the Beast. On August 16, lights go up on The Producers, the slapstick, boundary-pushing comedy and last show of this summer’s season at the barn.

2.

Through August 13: Westerly’s Wilcox Park is hosting The Colonial Theatre (TheColonialTheatre.org) for Shakespeare in the Park. This year’s show is Twelfth Night, a story involving a shipwreck, twins separated at birth and a lot of gender-bending mistaken identity.

3.

August 1-August 3: The music lasts all summer in Newport. Created as a bridge between the Folk and Jazz Festivals, Newport Bridgefest (NewportBridgefest.com) is an all-local celebration of music between the City by the Sea’s two marquee summer festivals.

The New England Quahog Festival

5.

August 5: At Westerly’s River Glow (OceanChamber.org), floating bonfires illuminate the Pawcatuck River, while belly dancers, fire jugglers and a steel drum band keep things lively on land. The family friendly event also includes hayrides and a rock-climbing wall.

6.

August 5-6: Have fun while you’re being green. Block Island’s Conserfest (Conserfest.org) has a mission to educate people about environmental and conservation causes while they have a great time at a two-day music festival.

4.

Daily: Unless you’re doing your sun salutations under the actual sun, you’re not doing summer right. Natural Fitness Yoga (NaturalFitness Yoga.com) offers daily Beach Yoga classes on Narragansett Town Beach, every morning at 7am. When class is over and it’s time to leave, you can say, “No, namaste at the beach.”

74

SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2017

7.

August 12-14: The Block Island Arts and Artisans Festival (Facebook: Block Island Arts and Artisans Festival) will bring the island’s finest artwork to the lawn of the Harbor Baptist Church for everyone to enjoy between beaching and catching the ferry home.

FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER 9TH AT VETERANS PARK

8.

August 26: See feats of raw courage at the second annual Oysta’ Festival at the Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMaritime.org). The celebration of all things oyster brings together farms around the state. Last year, attendees ate over 4,000 freshly shucked oysters – good thing there’s a speediest shucker competition.

LIVE MUSIC

9.

August 26: The Newport Historical Society (NewportHistory.org) is staging its largest reenactment to date, the 1777 British Occupation. Over 75 costumed interpreters will be recreating what it was like to live in Newport’s Old Quarter during the Revolutionary War. Spoiler alert: there was a lot of wool, and no AC.

10.

August 27: The New England Quahog Festival (NewEnglandQuahogFestival.com) is back in Wickford for a second year, featuring food trucks, kayak races, live music, a beer garden, a marine life touch tank and more. Best of all is the sea creature parade: everyone – especially mermaids – are welcome.

Summertime Brews Hot dogs? Check. Potato salad? Big check. All you need now are some cold brews, and this cookout is ready to roll. When it comes to summer suds, Rhode Island’s on its game. Locally made and easy to find in liquor stores all over the state, these beers deserve a spot in any cooler. 3 1

4

2 5

1 Take a Dip Revival Brewing Company’s Night Swim’ah (RevivalBrewing.com) is as bold as the colorful design on its can. The beer boasts multiple, fruity layers for a big, well-rounded flavor. It pairs well with food or as a simple, stand-alone thirst-quencher.

2 Sipping and Sailing Hazy Day from Grey Sail Brewing (GreySailBrewing .com) offers a light, effervescent flavor with a hint of orange. The finish is appropriately dry, making this brew a summer sippin’ favorite.

3 Here Comes the Storm Newport Storm Brewery (NewportStorm.com) serves up its Summer Hefeweizen, a light white variety of German beer perfect for the season. Its sweet, fruity flavor and clean finish pair perfectly with some fun in the sun.

4 A Neighborly Pint

5 Big Kid Ginger Beer

If you’re looking for a beer you can sip on all day long, look no further than Narragansett Beer’s Summertime Citra (NarragansettBeer.com) session ale. Its distinct lemon flavor makes it as bright and sunny as the season, and just right for easy drinking.

Looking for something different? Check out Farmer Willie’s Craft Ginger Beer (TheFarmerWillies.com) for a not-too-sweet ginger taste and crisp finish. This boozy Schweppes taste-alike makes a great mixer for some summer sangria.
