Fall Into Fashion You probably spend a lot of time in the morning staring into the abyss of your closet, trying to put together an outfit that feels interesting and fashionable from the clothing you already have… or, at least, to find something you didn’t wear to work three days ago. Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to put in all that work before you started your workday? Wouldn’t life be easier if you just had a personal stylist? Well, lucky for you, you do – at least in this issue.
This month, we go shopping with personal stylists who pick out looks for men, women and kids that are stylish, on-trend for fall and won’t break the budget. Read on, and then go shopping.

So Happening The Family Car
Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
There are family heirlooms and then there are 106-yearold antique cars. For the Bailey family, a 1910 Oakland Model 24 – one of just two in the world – was a memory collecting dust for years until it was fully restored in 2010. Read on for the multi-generational story of this 30 horsepower beauty.

Miles and Memories Preserving family history in a 1910 Oakland Roadster In 1930, a young
blacksmith named Ernest Bailey purchased a used 1910 Oakland Model 24 Roadster in New York and drove it back to his hometown of North Kingstown. At the height of the Great Depression, the blacksmith was expanding his business to car sales and repair. Eighty-six years later, the family-owned Bailey dealership is thriving and the 1910 Oakland is only one of two known model 24s in the world. When the car was made, Oakland Motors was only three years removed from its origins as a horse-drawn buggy manufacturer. This is why the steering wheel is on the right hand side as buggy drivers needed to see the ditch to avoid dropping off the road. The Model 24, originally listed at $1,000, boasts solid brass fittings, wooden spoke wheels and a 30 horsepower four-cylinder engine. Ernest drove the car for a short while, but for nearly 70 years the car was locked away in a barn or, in later years, displayed in the dealership show room as an antique oddity. When Ernest died in 1999, the car was passed down to his son Keith. At this point, the car had deteriorated, been taken apart
Brass is the new chrome: Keith Bailey of North Kingstown has fully restored this 1910 Roadster
and was being stored in boxes. Keith considered selling it as-is or junking it for whatever he could get. It wasn’t until his mother’s death that Keith was inspired to restore it. “I promised my mother, Alice,” says Keith. “She told me upon her passing that she would’ve liked to have seen the car restored to original condition.”
A long, arduous and expensive seven years later, the car had completed a full concours restoration. Due to the rarity and impeccable condition of the Oakland, Keith started attending – and winning – awards from car shows hosted by the Antique Automobile Club of America. Since 2010 the car has won 17 awards, including the Senior Grand

A Hidden Gem Awaits You in Green Hill
Among the Sculpture Trail’s residents you’ll find Sir Loin, BBQ Bull by artist Sean Harrington
Mother Nature is an accomplished artist in her own right and here in South County we are blessed to have so many beautiful vistas and spaces to explore. In South Kingstown there is a special spot where over 20 artists have contributed their work to compliment hers. Enter the woods through a break in a stonewall and suddenly you are in a world of sun-dappled whimsy. Welcome to the South Kingstown Land Trust Sculpture Trail. As you walk around the quarter mile trail your eyes will draw you to the sculptures small and large, but don’t forget to look up. The trees hold some wonderful surprises like a net of sparkling crystals, a world of welcoming hands swinging between branches. The land trust is a private, non-profit corporation founded to protect wildland and farmland from encroaching development. Today, the trust protects over 2,600 acres of land in South Kingstown and creates hiking trails and open space for public enjoyment. The Sculpture Trail was a project five years in the making that started with a vision by local artists Troy West and Claudia Flynn to marry art and nature. “In April 2013, South Kingstown Land Trust staff and trustees met with sculptors on the site with the common vision of preserving an environmentally sensitive area as a sculpture trail and nature preserve,” says Troy. The trail officially opened on September 7, 2014. Mr. West and Ms. Flynn will be hosting a guided tour on September 11 from 3-5pm as part of Land Trust Days by the RI Land Trust Council. Light refreshments will be served and well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Firefighter Lew Kitts Has Rescued a Classic Fire Engine In 2010, the Block Island
Fire Department sold Engine 2, their 1947 Dodge fire truck to the Jamestown Fire Department Museum. Parked and out of service for years, it was in disrepair and in desperate need of a full restoration. Jamestown’s former chief, Bob Bryer put up the asking price of a single dollar bill and firefighter Lew Kitts got to work. For five years, Lew invested his personal time and money to restore it to a working fire engine; now it’s operational, pumping 250 gallons per minute and shining with new paint and lettering. Every two weeks, Lew steers the four-speed, flat head six cylinder from the open cab down to Beavertail Light, even right through the winter. Now, just awaiting the perfect new brass bell, Engine 2 is ready for a parade. On September 25, Lew will be back behind the wheel for the South Kingstown Firefighters Memorial Parade. Departments will gather at the Fireman’s Memorial in Peace Dale at noon, rain or shine, before
Firefighter Lew Kitts has refurbished the old Block Island fire engine just in time for the South Kingstown Firefighters Memorial Parade
beginning their march down Main and High Streets at 1pm. All their stations will be represented along with high school marching bands, the Yankee
Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps and the Mystic Highland Pipe Band. After the parade and a few final touches, Jamestown Fire Department plans
to show off the restoration in next summer’s Block Island Fourth of July parade. 1070 Kingstown Road, Peace Dale. –Todd Corayer
A VISION fOR The WALLS
Bricks and Murals will brighten the Westerly-Pawtcatuck downtown area with a series of historic-themed murals
20
SO RHODE ISLAND | September 2016
In a few decades many things will change. Trends will die off and old shops might be replaced, but next year a group of committed volunteers will bring something long lasting to the downtown area of Westerly-Pawcatuck. Their idea, now known as Bricks and Murals, is to help create timeless pieces of art on the most permanent structures in the downtown area: the walls of local businesses. After months of planning, the dates for their event have been set for September 13-17 of 2017. During this time they expect hundreds of muralists, known as the Walldogs, to infiltrate the town, creating historic themed murals that are specific to the area. “To aid in the design of these murals, each artist is paired up with a local person with special knowledge of their particular theme,” says Wendy Brown, president of the Westerly–Pawcatuck Downtown Business Association. These groups of artists work on a volunteer basis, often traveling from across
the country to be part of gatherings that take place once a year in a different city. The four-day event will include a block party, activities for all ages and a front row seat to watch while a piece of town’s history is made. To help create awareness and excitement for next year’s event, the committee of Bricks and Murals decided to use this September to continue generating funds. This month, multiple happenings will take place in downtown Westerly including a food stroll, a concert and a paint night. More details and dates for these events can be found on their Facebook page. If you’re looking to fill up your calendar for the month of September, the Bricks and Murals events create ample opportunities. They also provide the possibility of looking up at a mural 50 years from now and being able to say you were a part of making that happen. OceanChamber.org –Jaylynn McClendon

“I brought the blues to the beach,” says Dan Cahill, who’s been booking bands on Block Island for years
Seriously, Dan cahill is
a little quirky. He hasn’t worn a matching pair of socks in decades, his Sunday best khaki’s are perpetually splattered with fading paint and he craves anything from LaSalle Bakery. In 1984, he visited Block Island but never left because, as he tells it, “I’d never been in a room with all left handed people, that’s why I stayed.” Growing up in Providence’s Elmhurst neighborhood, Dan’s mom gave him lots of grief, mostly for not following a straight path to the square world, but Dan knew there was music to hear and people to meet. “My mother said she must have taken the wrong baby. I never really had a real job until I quit drinking in ‘79.” “I brought the blues to the beach,” he said, after tending bar at The Wreck in Misquamicut and starting his M.O.M. Productions, an apt acronym for Mayor of Misquamicut. Big stars like Willie Dixon, Little Walter Horton, Eight to the Bar, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Westerly hero Johnny Nicholas and Stevie Ray Vaughn, who he booked for $400 on a Tuesday night, all played his room. He once drove Roosevelt Sykes to a city gig because The Honeydripper told him, “I wouldn’t let just anybody drive me around. I heard you were the man, Dan, that’s why I’m trusting you.” “It costs nothing to say hello. It costs nothing to be polite,” he believes, and his good nature was well received by islanders. At McGovern’s Yellow Kittens, Dan worked behind the scenes making things, as bluesman Chris Smither would say, “so the seams don’t seem to show.” He booked blues, cover and
swing bands onto its tiny stage, then big names like Jonathan Edwards, Taj Mahal and James Cotton. Always long gone by dark, he remains dedicated, indispensable and back to work each day at dawn. In the old days, many wee hour imbibers heard Dan’s keys in the Kittens’ front door before making a fast exit out the back. “I always knew who was in there before I opened the door,” he says, laughing. In 1992, he rode his bike from Seattle to San Francisco, mostly because he hadn’t done it yet. Right off, he met Neil Young but declined a lift on his tour bus. In San Francisco it was Jerry Garcia who asked what he was doing. “I said, riding my bike down the coast. He said, ‘That must have been a hard ride.’ I said it was a piece of cake.” Naturally Jerry said, “I’m playing a show, why don’t you come?” That’s so Dan. After 30 years of being the man behind the curtain, there’s no going back to the beach or the old neighborhood because, “all the old people are gone, the old buildings are gone” but he still hands out a hundred left handed calendars every Christmas. Dan would love to book Cheryl Wheeler on the island; her ode “75 Septembers” is a favorite and as he approaches his own 75 this September, like her dad he remains that “child of changing times.” Each day still starts with two different socks, a fun nod to rebellion, to his youth, to his mom. “When I see her in heaven,” he says, “I expect her to say ‘Dan, yer nothin but a horse’s ass!’” but there’ll be many more September’s until that show gets booked. –Todd Corayer

We asked the state’s most fashionable personal stylists to put together looks from local stores that reflect the season’s trends and are actually wearable by normal people. South County Chic for Her Styled by Jill Marinelli, with clothing from Robin B. Clothier
M
“My goal is to make every one of my clients feel like a more powerful version of themselves,” says personal stylist Jill Marinelli. “When you can teach women what works for their bodies, how to shop for it and how to create a style they love, they feel empowered and ready to take on other areas of their lives.” She offers online classes, in-person events (her next is October 13 in Providence) and one-on-one styling. “My fashion philosophy is when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good.” JMStylist.com. Tell us about this outfit. This is actually an upgraded version of my own personal “uniform” – jeans and a white tee. I wanted to choose a look that would be a beautiful, chic option as we transition to fall (because we don’t actually go straight to sweaters and boots in September). The
cream top and microflare jeans are simple and classic, but made edgier by the belt and metallic clutch. I always think in terms of color, pattern, texture and shine – including at least one of each of those elements is the simplest way to create a multidimensional outfit that looks rich and interesting.
Add a pair of heels and, you guessed it, a leather jacket in an unexpected color like cognac.
How do you take this outfit from day to night?
When you’re dressing a client, what do you want her to know? Dress for your body type: know what you’re working with and how to flatter it. Don’t wear clothes that make you feel bad about yourself. Purge your closet. Everything in your wardrobe should be a reflection of who you are. Keep only the things that fit you, flatter you and make you feel fabulous. When shopping, avoid “sales goggles.” Lots of us are easily wooed by a sale price, but neglect to make sure the item is actually something we’d love. I see too many closets that are stuffed with not-quiteright clothes that have never been worn.
• Chapa Handmade Leather Clutch, $209 • Brave Handmade Leather Belt, $92
• T. Jazelle Handcrafted Bracelets, $48 • T. Jazelle Handcrafted Crystal Necklace, $42
What’s your favorite trend for fall? Vogue calls it “Biker Babe.” It’s moto jackets with zippers and leather. Everything is edgy and tough, but pair those elements with florals or a flowy dress and you have a beautiful balance of naughty and nice. I think every women should have a leather jacket in her closet for fall. A classic leather jacket is an investment piece, but faux leather is fine and won’t break the bank.

A Gentleman’s Night on the Town Styled by Jim Fortier, with clothing from Blueprint 5
J
Jim Fortier has been styling menswear for over 20 years, starting at Polo Ralph Lauren in the early 1990s. He has done magazine shoots, commercials and personal styling for clients, and now owns and designs for Blueprint 5, the men’s clothing store in East Greenwich. Of creating more stylish men, he says, “my philosophy is fit, fit, fit.” Tell us about this outfit. The outfit was chosen for a couple of reasons: comfort and updated classic styling. Both the jacket and trousers have stretch built in for ease of movement and
comfort. The jacket is cut a bit trimmer and a bit shorter, and it is double breasted. The pants are an Italian twill also with stretch. The shirt is Italian and super soft. It’s all classic, but with an updated fit and feel.
If you don’t love it, leave it in the store. Have a good tailor in your life. We have a master tailor on-site who also takes in outside work.
What fashion advice do you give your clients? If it doesn’t fit, don’t buy it!
What’s the biggest fashion mistake men make? Many clients have difficulty clearing old items out. Men tend to hang onto items for one reason or another but they no longer make sense from a fit or style perspective. At home consultations, my job is to help clean out the past and freshen up the closet. The end result is a new look and confidence, not to mention a better love life.

Flirty After 5pm Styled by Gaelen Abt, with clothing from Gossip Boutique
A
A “life long style junkie,” Style Sherpa Gaelen Abt has been honing her skills since childhood and is now a certified Image Consultant, working with men and women to create styles that are truly their own. She’s also a writer for On Trend Magazine and has a style blog. “I’m not a big fan of rules when it comes to fashion,” she says. “My style philosophy is more about keeping an open mind. Style isn’t about following trends; it’s being true to yourself which in turn makes you more confident. Confidence is always in style.” TheStyleSherpa.net. How did you put together this look? When putting an outfit together, I strive for balance in the look. The lace dress and denim shoe offset each other, keeping this look appropriate for an elegant dinner or listening to music at a favorite bar. Another key factor when picking an outfit is the personality of the person wearing it. The woman I picture in this look
is outgoing and fun loving. (Although I could morph this into a lovely look for a more classic style woman. I’d change out the jacket for a longer car coat in a similar color palate, add patent leather pumps and pearls and a solid color clutch.) What would you change to make this a work outfit? To take this outfit from night to day, I would remove the jacket, add a chunky colorful bib necklace and a larger leather tote. If you are office bound, toss on a shaped blazer or leather jacket. Tell us your favorite fall trend. There was so much pattern, color and texture on the runways for fall and nothing makes me happier. This truly is a great time in fashion. So many different decades are being channeled by designers that it’s easy to find ways of keeping your look current, while staying true to who
you are. Adding a cool pair of jeans with some interesting detail is top on my list. Maybe a ‘70s-inspired pair in a wider flare and patch pockets in front, or perhaps a fun metallic finish or details up the side. Anything that isn’t your basic jean. An off-the-shoulder top is another perfect piece to add to your wardrobe. What advice do you give your clients? Let go of the rules. All those “rules” from our past are pretty much gone. I find once a client realizes that it’s okay to wear things in a different way, it completely changes how they approach getting dressed. That includes mixing patterns, which is probably the easiest way to make your look more current. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations. It usually takes two to three times of seeing yourself in something different before you get used to it. You don’t have to wear it out the first time.

Fall Trends for Women Styled by Lisa Shorr, with clothing from Green Ink
F
For Lisa Shorr, clothing is about more than just fashion: it’s about how you present yourself to the world. “I live by my three c’s of image: consistency, congruency and credibility,” she says. “From how you present yourself nonverbally and verbally, to marketing collateral to social media posts, all should be consistent to your brand.” Lisa, certified in Advanced Image Consulting from London Image Institute, owns Shorr Success, a personal brand consulting firm. She has styled photo shoots, television shows and countless personal closets, and is a vice president of the Association of Image Consultants. “Show your authentic self,” she says. “Don’t feel the need to follow every trend.” ShorrSuccess.com. Tell us about this outfit. Fall 2016 runways touted bold patterns, fabulous faux furs, flowing vests, metallic tones and statement accessories. The tunic has fall’s warm colors, and the cigarette
pant is neutral enough not to compete with it. It’s a great professional and slenderizing alternative to the legging. I chose a similar color wedge to continue the leg line. Monochrome is a great style trick to elongate your legs – use this tip if you’re petite or have a fuller leg. My signature style with my clients is to incorporate accessories into an outfit. I selected a multi-colored beaded necklace that draws the eye up toward the face and ties in all of the colors in the tunic along with a versatile handbag, that can either be worn as a clutch or cross body.
Take this outfit from day to night for us. For a business casual look, wear the tunic, pants and wedges. The handbag can be more casual worn as a cross body. A soft makeup will complete the look. For night, add the faux fur vest and a statement necklace, and change the shoes to a trendy heeled bootie.
How do you incorporate interesting elements? It’s a matter of bringing in patterns, fabrics, colors and accessories into your wardrobe. One of my favorite looks for fall is faux fur. The fall color palette is full of rich, confident yet calming tones. If you are not a huge fan of color, trying adding a “pop” of fall colors into your wardrobe in a layering tank, handbag, shoe or necklace.
How do you find a truly great fit? Don’t get hung up on size. Too many women get hung up on the size of a garment. When trying a garment on think, “can I button it and does it fit me?” A tailor is your best friend. Most commercial clothing is constructed for a limited number of body shapes. For many women, when the we find a pant to fit our thighs, then it is often too big in the waist. If you want to make a positive impression and show your client you pay attention to detail, start with tailoring.

“For me, it’s about developing your own unique style and keeping it simple,” says Margaret Batting of Image Communications. “I always ask my clients what they want their clothes, look and image to say about them. It’s about starting on the inside and then communicating it on the outside. I love helping my clients create a closet filled with only the clothes they love and make them feel their absolute best.” She has studied couture fashion in Paris and trained with image and etiquette experts in New York, Atlanta and Vermont. “Everything in your closet needs to support your lifestyle and your career,” Margaret says. “It needs to reflect the real you.” MargaretBatting.com. What did you have in mind putting together this outfit? I wanted an outfit that could do double duty. I like to pick pieces that can be worn during more than
one season or serve multiple purposes. When building a wardrobe or shopping for a new season, I look for high quality, well constructed, classic pieces that include some sort of twist or interesting detail. The white sleeveless top is a simple, classic style yet has such interest at the top and back. The army green poncho/scarf can be worn eight different ways and is one of the big color trends for fall. The jeans, blouse and necklace can be worn now with a sandal instead of a bootie and then later with the booties and poncho when the weather starts to get cooler. I love versatility. I always want to maximize my wardrobe budget and my clients’. I prefer fewer, well made pieces, tailored to fit perfectly than a closet filled with clothes I don’t love.
nude. I’m planning to add either a brocade jacket or pant, definitely something in crushed velvet, a leather skirt and I’ve already purchased a fantastic pair of nude suede pumps from JCrew. They are a must have. I recommend adding one or two trends to update your wardrobe quickly. The key is selecting the trend that is true to you. Not all trends work for everyone. You don’t want to end up looking like a fashion victim.
What trends are you looking forward to this fall? I love brocade, crushed velvet, leather and the color
Give us some free style advice. Buy clothes that fit your body shape and size. Tailoring is a must. Don’t buy just because it’s on sale. Buy pieces that go with two or more items you already have in your closet. Always shop with a list. Love every piece you buy. Otherwise, you’ll never wear it.

Denise Navoian opened her chic kids clothing store Polka Dot Panda in Narragansett’s Pier Marketplace in 2008. In addition to adorable clothing for girls and boys, Polka Dot Panda offers personalized, embroidered apparel and baby gifts. “Classic looks are always in fashion and can be paired with trendy looks,” Denise says. The most important thing, though? Asking kids what they like, she says, making sure “to find out what colors and styles are their favorites.” How can you get more than one season out of kids clothes? The Tea Collection red, short sleeved Kira Kira Wrap Dress can transition from summer to fall with matching longsleeved tees and leggings. A variety of
soft, warm cardigan options are available as well. The Tea Collection outfits for boys and girls were inspired by the designer’s travels to Japan, so many of our pieces this fall have an Asian flair. The dressier Mustard Pie collection is an assortment of long and short sleeved styles for mild, early fall temperatures that can be layered underneath adorable matching jackets. What fall trends are you loving this season? Bright pops of color, floral patterns and animal graphic designs. All of our shoes, accessories and outerwear are hand picked to match each of our fall outfits. We recommend that customers first choose their favorite outfit, and then we help them to match it up
with shoes, necklaces, hair accessories and outerwear. Many of our basic shoe styles, like navy blue Mary Janes, for example, are a classic look to coordinate with almost any outfit. When you’re picking out clothes for kids, what’s the most important thing to keep in mind? Comfort is key. When helping customers complete their children’s wardrobes, we start with essential items like soft denim knit pants for boys and jeggings for girls, and pair with essential tees. Here at Polka Dot Panda, you can find comfortable, stylish and unique clothing at reasonable prices. Boutique shopping here doesn’t have to be expensive, yet your children are sure to have a stylish and unique wardrobe.

Beth Voso bought a multi-generational home in Exeter and created a space all her own
A Humble Hideaway A family story spans generations
Photography by Grace Lentini
Tucked quietly in
the bucolic woodlands of Exeter, Beth Voso’s serene property is a peaceful oasis. When she first nested there 27 years ago, she intrinsically felt a duty to the property: generations of family members who called the circa-1800 house a home make their final resting place in a historic cemetery just down the lane. “Most of the family members that lived here at some point are buried there,” she says, but instead of perhaps being daunted, Beth honored those who came before her by learning a bit of their genealogy – even if by default. Through the years, Beth has found strangers innocently poking around the cemetery and surrounding property. She warmly indulges their curiosity and in most
cases, their search for family history. “I have acquired a packet of historic information I didn’t go looking for but ended up with in my possession,” she explains. In addition to the oral history Beth shares, she has a photograph she understands dates back to the early 1900s. Part of the history Beth has learned is that the property exceeded 100 acres at one point. “I’m on ten acres now, so the cottage was original, as was the corn crib,” she says. The latter was once a granary used to dry and store corn, in all likelihood, for animal feed. It’s that tiny building that has always intrigued Beth. An artist at heart, Beth was motivated to turn the corn crib into a humble studio. The space, though basic, offered
a simplicity and solitude that invited her to paint and create. Being surrounded by the lush landscape, there was never any shortage of inspiration. But as so often happens, life gets in the way. The studio took a backseat and the creative space was largely ignored (except by some local wildlife). “It morphed into a ‘what do we do with this’ space… and the mice reclaimed it.” Years later, Beth’s elderly mother, Lucie, moved into the main cottage with her and she was not shy about telling her daughter exactly what she would do with the nearly dilapidated studio. “Mom lived with me the last three years of her life. She always said, ‘If I lived here, I would fix up that place,’ referring to the studio.”
Last year, Beth decided it was time for the corn-crib-turned-studioturned-critter-cottage to start a new chapter. She worked with contractors to transform the barely-there screened in porch into a little kitchen and bath. The main room, which doubles as a bedroom and living space, was completely transformed and restored. The original beams, now exposed, add an authentic countr+y charm. “It took a long time to do it, but we made it into a livable cottage,” she says. As the mini abode was coming together, Beth sourced furnishings and décor from myriad places. “As an artist, I had lots of things I collected through the years – yard sale or dump finds, and things I had recovered with new fabrics,” she says. objects in her own personal treasure trove, including a small shelf for the kitchen Beth’s father handmade more than 65 years ago. “Pieces came from my mother’s family in Brooklyn; some of them were things I grew up with, like the desk that was in my bedroom as a kid,” she adds. The perfect rustic bed she bought off Craigslist from a family just a few miles down the road and the five-point deer antlers that were found in her own woods now add a decidedly rustic aesthetic. She also shopped locally to complete the tiny cottage, including making a stained glass window found at Lafayette Antiques in North Kingstown the inspiration for the home’s color palette. “Things were salvaged from a million places.” This
phase, says Beth, made for an enjoyable art project within itself. “I really had a lot of fun with it,” she says. Once completed, Beth was ready to try something entirely new: list the tiny cottage on Airbnb. Admittedly, she says she wasn’t sure if there would be much demand by travelers for a tiny cottage in rural Exeter. As it turns out, Lucie’s Hideaway was booked every weekend from May through the rest of the summer, including weeknights, and has won rave reviews. Though the cottage is a standalone structure and private, guests need to know there are some locals they’ll likely cross paths with: Vinny the Chihuahua, a trio of friendly, quiet goats and your standard barn cat or two.

Being a local artisan yourself, you carry a lot of local artists in the shop. With Serendipity, I knew the exact atmosphere I wanted to create; an environment with a wide variety of unique finds, superior quality and affordable prices. Being a local artist myself, an all handmade gift store only made sense. In Serendipity we offer a little bit of everything, from dog collars and treats to rustic wine racks, wooden signs and the best nautical hostess gifts. Gorgeous, poisonous flower Oleander Photography, sea glass jewelry, hot packs, reversible fabric bowls, the sweetest handmade dolls by May*lo Studio, to fab and fun light switch covers by Maisonwares and even purses made out of men’s ties. Local artisan Melissa Beckwith was born and raised in Wickford and last year she brought her love for local art (including her own jewelry line Missy & Me Design) to the heart of Wickford in the form of Serendipity Boutique. We sat down with Melissa to learn a bit more about the boutique and what kind of great local finds one can discover behind its doors. Tell me about Serendipity Boutique. Living in Wickford all my life and being around two very crafty women, my mom and grandma, it was always a dream of mine to one day own a store of my own in the place that was home. My jewelry line, Missy & Me Design, was in its second retail location in early 2015 when the owner of that store was looking to retire. How Serendipity Boutique came to be is exactly as the meaning behind the beautiful word – finding something wonderful without looking for it: fate.

We have a wedding section with tons of great pieces – where we can offer hand painted custom signs, transfer a photo or new last name on coasters, customize glassware and even pillows, all done by local artists. We also have some of the most precious baby and children gifts from Sew Rhode Island where we can put the child’s name on a bib, beach poncho and superhero cape. We hear you’ve recently added refurbished furniture. Yes! Serendipity is excited to announce that we now offer custom, refinished furniture pieces. We feature two experienced artisans: David-Max and VintageTWIST. By Julie Tremaine
Nourishing the Spirit It’s a curious thing
to start asking yourself the question, “What do I need?” On some level, you’re asking yourself this question all day long: Am I hungry? Do I need coffee? Do I have time? But you’re probably not really asking the question – or, at least, not answering in a way that’s cultivating your best health and state of mind. That’s what Katie McDonald has made her business: helping people ask themselves “what do I need right now?” and, even more, helping them find the right answers. You might think you need a cookie. The parade to my office vending machine indicates that people often think that. You might think you need a drink at the end of a long day. I’ve thought that more times than I care to admit. You might think that you need, really need, to tell off that jerk parent of your kid’s friend. Through Bnourished, her holistic nutrition and wellness practice in North Kingstown, Katie helps people find their real needs, and more importantly, to honor them. Because if you’re a better version of yourself, everyone in your life benefits from that. Quite a tall order. And one, in the spring, that I decided to undertake, working with Katie for several months this year to become better at living my life. At least, that’s what I was hoping for. The results? Well, you’ll have to ask my loved ones about that. First things first: Bnourished is not therapy. I’m all for therapy – it’s done great things for me – but this is different. I like to call it “holistic life hacks.” While I was working with Katie, at bi-weekly meetings in my office or at her gorgeous home studio overlooking a pond in Saunderstown, we did talk about my life. But it was through the lens of: what’s going on with me, and what lifestyle changes can help alleviate those things? Basically, what do I need? The answer was: a lot. I have this habit where I say yes to everything, do as much as I possibly can, take on an unmanageably big workload at my job, make more time for other people than I have. Yes, I’ll take that spare ticket to the theatre tonight. I’ll just skip eating dinner. And yes, I’d be happy to bake a cake for your daughter’s birthday. I can get up at 5am tomorrow to get it in the oven. And no, it’s no problem to get away for that last minute weekend, if I add two

hours to each workday this week. As much as I was enjoying my life, I wasn’t fully enjoying it. Most of the time I felt so exhausted and drained that I wasn’t present with people. I would lose sleep over what I did and didn’t say, things I didn’t do well enough, things I forgot to do or couldn’t get done in time. Apologies that needed to be made. Mistakes I wish hadn’t been. So what I needed, first, was to take a breath. At our first session, Katie asked me how I could do more things for myself. It was a daunting question, because I was already doing so much. I didn’t have time for more. My happiest place is on the yoga mat, but I was struggling to get to the studio. We set some intentions for our work together: to commit to time for myself for inner peace, creativity and movement; and to add better whole living practices to my daily life. I stumbled into our second session exhausted and late, as per usual. I had made some improvements to my daily smoothies, at Katie’s instruction: adding hemp seeds for protein 2nd, ground flax for digestion, using greens besides spinach and kale – ways to cut additional calories and still feel full. I told her about this weird thing: that the more I was feeling drained, the more I craved citrus. Katie said it wasn’t weird at all. Citrus fruits are natural mood boosters. It opened up a conversation about aromatherapy that has - without exaggeration - given me a way to improve any malady I’m feeling: White Fir for malaise; Sweet Orange and Grapefruit for the blues; Lavender for calming and rest. She gave me a little bottle of Lemongrass Oil, which is bright and invigorating. Later, at my desk in my usual 3pm slump, it gave me a mental boost that allowed me to avoid the coffee I usually turn to to power through the rest of the afternoon. Two sessions and my life choices were already better. The next two sessions focused on food, particularly how the right choices can make you feel better. I had the basics down, mostly forgoing white flour and processed foods for quinoa and vegetables. But I was eating too many protein bars as meal replacements, and eating way too much sugar without realizing it. Each session, Katie greeted me with a mug of tea (she has
her own blend she makes with Farmacy Herbs in Providence) and a treat. Once it was a homemade raw chocolate hazelnut mousse cake, once a few raw cookies. She showed me that dietary changes could be delicious and, more importantly, painless. I thought that I had been making generally healthy choices, but I was choosing foods marketed as healthy that are anything but. The following sessions focused on cultivating sacred spaces, especially making space for myself in the middle of my life. Starting to say no to things, and to people, is probably the most difficult thing I've ever done. Not in terms of actually doing it, but of the emotional work it took to get there. The impulse to make people happy runs deep. But once I started observing how much better I
Bnourished 965-4486 Bnourished.com
felt from saying no once in a while, I wanted to do more of it. I started giving myself one night a week, then two. I was still doing for other people, but I was also doing for myself. For the first time I was realizing that I was also one of the people in my life who needs to be taken care of the way I take care of others. A few weeks after our last session, someone said, “What's going on with you? You seem different. I haven't seen you around as much. You seem like there's something big going on.” And really, there was. There still is. The changes I've been making to my life have been subtle, and slow. But they're on a track that I'm happy with, and they’re choices I feel proud of. All because I finally started giving real answers to that one big question.

A Taste of the Neighborhood Pan roasted boneless salmon filet with smoked salmon dijon cream sauce and fresh cavatelli at Sonoma Bistro and WineBar
There’s nothing quite like walking into a restaurant and being greeted by name, and that’s exactly what you get at North Kingstown’s Sonoma Bistro and WineBar. It’s cozy, comfortable and delicious, and the friendly service will have you back again and again. Turn the page to learn more.

saw the beer list and was immediately impressed. They have 12 local Rhode Island beers on draft, plus dozens of draft beers from New England and beyond. I started with one of my favorites: Cranston’s own Revival Brewing Company’s Night Swim’ah Belgian Wheat Ale ($6.99). From there I moved onto another favorite, Providence’s Trinity Brewhouse’s Rhode Island IPA ($4.99). I was pleased when

I saw the prices because at a recent dinner in Providence, my local beers were $8 a piece. My guest enjoyed one of their signature cocktails (Mexican Vacation) on the hot night we were there. This martini was a blend of Patron Silver Tequila, Patron Citronage, Cointreau and fresh squeezed lime juice. She loved it and thought it was a bargain at $10. The wine list offered many bargains as well. All glasses
were priced between $7 and $9.50. As we sipped our drinks and perused the large menu, our waitress brought out a loaf of warm, tasty French bread. With so many choices on the menu, I can see why there are so many regulars. They could eat here every night and not have to repeat their orders for weeks. There was a large selection of appetizers, including half a dozen grilled pizzas. There was also a variety of salads, which could be made into a meal with the addition of a protein (how about some fried calamari on your salad?). Still in summer mode, we shared an order of the Clam Cakes ($9). We were given a platter of five humungous clam cakes served with a delicious spicy aioli. The sauce was a nice addition to the traditional clam cakes, and it was so tasty I wished there was more of it on the plate. As far as entrées go, there was something for everyone. The hamburgers are all one half pound of ground Black Angus Beef, and the sandwiches I saw were very large. I opted for one of the lighter sounding dishes, Salmon Cavatelli ($18). It turned out to be a good order but not really a light dish. I can’t lie, my favorite part of this dish was the crispy leeks on the top. My second favorite part of the dish was the pasta, which was cooked to a perfect al dente. It

one of the top destinations for dining in the United States by a number of national publications (including Travel + Leisure, Zagat and the Huffington Post). I agree wholeheartedly. There are a wide variety of cuisines to pick from, and there are many top notch chefs turning out delicious food. Yet, sometimes I don’t feel like dealing with downtown metered parking, I want to save some money or the city is just too far away from where I am when I want a quick bite. Luckily, dining outside of the city has come a long way since the days of my youth. After a day of learning how to paddleboard in Narragansett, I made the smart decision to forego a trek into the city and instead stopped at Sonoma Bistro and WineBar. Sonoma Bistro and WineBar is just what you’d expect from a restaurant on the outskirts of Providence. The parking is plentiful and free, which is a huge plus in my book. The restaurant has a casual, homey feel with the majority of the seats being in nice comfortable booths. The staff was friendly, welcoming and accommodating. We noted a majority of the guests were regulars, and the staff knew them by name. Before I arrived, I was planning to try one of their many wines, but then I

was blended with creamy Dijon mustard and smoked salmon sauce, capers and slivers of red onion. I loved the smoked salmon sauce because it was very strong, but it might not to be to everyone’s taste. As if all that goodness wasn’t enough, the chef also added a large piece of well-seasoned, pan-seared salmon. I am picky about my salmon, and this piece was good. My guest was in the mood for red meat, so she ordered the Bistro Steak Frites ($21). The steak was topped with a pan sauce and served with a mountain of hand cut fries covered in Parmesan and garlic. The fries were amazing, and there were plenty enough to share. The desserts are all made inhouse, and a few of them sounded
good to us. We chose the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cheesecake ($9). It was full of rich peanut butter flavor, and the brownie crust could have stood on its own as a dessert. Our generous sized slice was topped with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and fresh whipped cream. After everything we ate, we were glad we were able to park close and not have to wait for a valet. Dining outside the city undoubtedly has its advantages. If I lived closer, Sonoma would be on my list of neighborhood spots, and they would most definitely know my name. When a restaurant has friendly service, reasonable prices, a killer beer list and a big variety of good food, what more could you want?

Ocean to Plate Two brothers leave the fishermen’s life to serve up tasty seafood
Photography by Blink of an Eye Photography
Imagine coming from a family where your father and uncle are fishermen (this shouldn’t be too hard, especially in South County). As soon as you are old enough to go out to sea you join them. Fishing is often a family business, passed down from one generation to the next, where fishing locations are shared as well as the spoils. This is the case with brothers Ben and Paul Sumner. Except, after a combined 55 years of fishing experience between them, they decided to put away their fishing nets and open a seafood restaurant, The Sumner Co., in Westerly. “The restaurant is owned and operated by real fishermen,” explains Ben. “We devoted our lives to the sea and catching fish. [Now], we put our hearts and souls into cooking and serving the very best seafood you can eat. We are proud to be seafood specialists.” Ben and Paul grew up in Narragansett on Great Island. Their lives have been filled with family recipes for clam chowder, lobster and scallop casserole and seafood stuffed mushrooms, to name a few. They’d been

talking about opening a restaurant for years and sharing their family recipes. This past May, it finally happened. As you would expect, the brothers get most of their fish from Point Judith. If it swims in our sea, it’s bound to be on their plates. For other seafood species that don’t live in our waters, like shrimp and king crab, they rely on other fishing
ports around the country. What remains the same, no matter where the seafood is sourced, is the brothers’ passion for good food. “Seafood is what we know,” says Ben. “We’ve been eating and cooking it all of our lives. We’ve always thought, ‘wow, everyone should get to taste this.’” 76 1/2 Oak Street, Westerly. 315-2551, Facebook.com/TheSumnerCo
Calamari is So Rhode Island
Take the Pledge
If summer has to come to end (we’re crying too), why not end it in true South County style: with a calamari cook off. During the Narragansett Calamari Cook Off and Summer’s End Festival on September 10, nine area restaurants will face off against each other to see whose calamari reigns supreme. Last year, The Coast Guard House won best overall calamari, but fierce competition is expected this year. The restaurants will be competing in three categories, including best overall, most inventive and most spirited team. In addition to the competition, the Sunset Farms food truck, Del’s Lemonade, Granny Squibb’s Iced Tea and Simply Natural, will also be at the festival among others. Kid’s activities, a cash bar and live music are also on the agenda. So come one, come all and celebrate the best season in South County, that is until the leaves start changing colors. Veterans Park, 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett. RICalamariFest.com
Can you pledge to eat local one day each week in September? That’s what the folks of the Savor South County: Eat Local Challenge are daring residents of South County to do. In an effort to get everyone on board, Savor South County will be providing information on farmer’s market events throughout South County as well as restaurants that provide locally sourced meals. This information can be found on the team’s Facebook Group page. This initiative was started by the 2015 members of Leadership Rhode Island. Each class has a project, and theirs was to survey residents across RI to identify common concerns among neighbors. In South County, the survey response included the desire to be connected, protect the environment and maintain the community character. The 2016 Leadership RI class picked up where the 2015 class left off, and started Savor South County. “We believe our team project promotes all of these priorities – and more,” says one of the founding members Katie McDonald. “South County residents choose South County as their home for the abundance of natural beauty, recreation, food and community. Savor South County: Eat Local brings all these elements together, crossing over town lines and in unison, celebrating the bounty of South County. We envision neighbors gathering at the farmer’s markets and virtually, on Facebook, to exchange recipes, photos, resources and tales of local foodie adventures.” Find them on Facebook for more information. You clearly didn’t want to open just any pharmacy. Where did your vision for Green Line come from? I got my start sort of in a funny way. My father was a greeting card salesman. His sales territory was in different pharmacies and he used to take my sisters and me with him. I was always in and around these beautiful mom and pop pharmacies and had this very clear vision for how my pharmacy was going to be. It was always going to be a Main Street location [because] I wanted it to have this small town feel. The soda fountain was a definite, mandatory part of the project, too. It was all inspired by me wanting to take pharmacy to its roots, to feel slower paced, more comfortable, more home-like. Why is the soda fountain so central, literally and figuratively, to a proper old-fashioned pharmacy? [Soda fountains] were created by pharmacists as sort of a way to mask

the flavors of bitter medications when medications used to be made by hand. But some of the sodas did have medicinal purposes themselves. Ginger ale is supposed to have real ginger in it and cola is supposed to be made from a real cola nut, because the cola nut is very soothing on the stomach. So, I wanted to take it back to what it was originally intended for. This is me putting my pharmacist hat on saying, “do we really need the artificial dyes, artificial colors and preservatives in there? What’s wrong with all the ingredients just on their own?” What’s different about an old soda fountain? I wanted to serve the soda in the style where you pump the syrup and add the carbonated water separately. I know it sounds silly when modern technology allows us to combine the two [and] mixes it for

you, but I think it affects the taste, the fizz, that effervescence you have in your mouth when you have it mixed fresh like that right in front of you. So much of the history of American pharmacies is directly intertwined with soda fountains. Are there kid favorites and adult favorites at the fountain? Not really. This is going to sound cheesy, but I’ve been able to witness the soda fountain bring out the kid in a lot of adults. Even the little things, like the candy machines, you’d think right off the cuff, that’s got to be a kid favorite. But seven out of ten times, the person standing at the machine with the quarter in their hand is that senior citizen who remembers it when they were a kid. The soda fountain is very crossgenerational. I’m actually witnessing this right now. We’ve got a grandfather in here with his two grandsons and they’re just chatting. It’s drumming up beautiful emotions and stories from people who remember these from their childhood. They like that it’s part of their kids’ or their grandchildren’s lives also.

One More Time
At the heart of Green Line Apothecary, a white tile and wood bar surrounds a gleaming stainless steel soda fountain. In back, a line of candy machines stand at the ready on a shelf, full of gumballs and jelly beans. I think I hear doo-wop in the background as I consider a menu including cherry phosphates and lime rickeys. What decade is this again? Thankfully for those in Wakefield, I arrived in a Honda and not a DeLorean, which would explain the natural-dyed gumballs and the thoroughly modern selection of supplements. Green Line Apothecary provides everything a modern pharmacy does, but it’s everything a modern pharmacy isn’t: personal, uncluttered, relaxed and even fun. Since I was all set on pills, I chatted with owner and pharmacist Christina Procaccianti about the joys of old-fashioned sodas and service. I also had a float with my dame; it was boss.

Sa-Tang Fine Thai & Asian Cuisine Piping hot Asian food, served speedily and garnished with herbs home-grown inside the restaurant, Sa-Tang is both a typical Asian restaurant, and it isn’t. The food, if you believe the regulars, tastes much better than just “typical.” It’ll blow your socks off. Sa-Tang serves the major food groups of Thai and Asian cuisine, like the Pad Thai for example, with a sauce clearer and less muddled than the cloying sweet-and-sour one found on ordinary strip mall Pad Thai. As for curry, fans describe Sa-Tang’s
preparation as “rich” and deeply satisfying, and it comes in four flavors each with a different kick. Sa-Tang isn’t afraid to get more serious with their dishes, either, offering the Thai favorite, Tamarind Duck, as well as the Japanese Chicken Katsu and the more Chinese-inspired Sesame Duck. You may as well add a side of Coconut Rice, Jasmine Rice or “Healthy Brown” Rice, and Mango Sticky Rice or Sticky “Kha Niao Man” Rice with Coconut Ice Cream for dessert. That’s Thai for delicious.

Slow cooked for hours, St. Louis ribs and spare ribs are topped off with Wes’ sweet and tangy Kansas City-style barbecue sauce. Pulled pork, chicken, salmon and steaks are also on the menu, along with grilled vegetable, salads and gluten-free options. Another tradition here are the

Lunch Love
Words that rarely describe gluten-free baked goods are moist and cakey, until now. The blueberry muffin from Jitters Cafe is both of these, plus it was bursting with fresh blueberries. 530 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. 295-9155, JittersCafeRI.com
From the al dente rice noodles to the chopped peanuts and crisp green onions, the Pad Thai from The Bike Stop Cafe was simply refreshing and tasty. We can’t wait to try some of their other gluten-free treats. 148 Boon Street, Narragansett. 284-1414, Facebook.com/TheBikeStopCafe
Decadent Dessert
Ooey and gooey, cheesy and saucy, the gluten-free cheese pizza from Dan’s Place hit all the right notes. It satisfied everyone’s pizza craving (including those who can eat gluten), with none of the tummy woes. 880 Victory Highway, West Greenwich. 392-3092, DansPizzaPlace.com
