From the publishers of SO Rhode Island
We’ve SO Come a Long Way In 2007, we had a crazy idea. People all over the state loved Providence Monthly, and especially in Southern Rhode Island, they were asking for more and more copies. What if we took the idea, the hiring of our first sales rep Joanne Colston, for that magazine – a guide to living your best life in the city – and made a whole new one, exclusively dedicated to the southern part of the state? Between the first idea and the first issue of So Rhode Island, there were about seven weeks. Seven! Talk about a learning curve. Back then, the city-minded editors had a hard time remembering which was Wakefield and which was Wickford, and between North Kingstown and Kingston, which had the “w” and which didn’t. Now, we can’t imagine life without SO. We’ve
tasted our way through every oyster farm in South County, we’ve been to every festival… we even have our favorite secret beaches that we conveniently leave out of summer stories. We never could have made it this far without all of our loyal readers, dedicated staff, advertisers, freelance writers and photographers, and friends we’ve made along the way. It’s been an amazing ten years. This month, we’re embarking on our biggest venture yet: an all new size, with a totally glossy format. We’re taking a minute to pat ourselves on the back for how far we’ve come, but we’re most excited about the future: not just for the next ten years (and beyond!) of SO, but for what’s to come in this captivating place we’re proud to (now) call home.

The South Kingstown Land Trust Is Seeing Green (Spaces) From coastline panoramas of the ocean to hidden hiking paths, Rhode Island is unique in its diversity of environments in such a small space. However, untouched open spaces can be hard to come by, which is why the non-profit South Kingstown Land Trust (SKLT. org) is actively working to preserve them for the community. Operating since 1983, SKLT most recently completed two land acquisition projects in the areas of Yawgoo Pond and Middlebridge. On Yawgoo Pond, the Land Trust acquired 33 acres of land from the Littlefield family, who had previously worked with the Trust in 2001 to prevent a subdivision. The 22 acres in Middlebridge were similarly acquired from the Smith family and both projects were funded by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the Bafflin Foundation and private donors.
Mentalist Lon Cerel Makes Magic Happen on Stage Magician and mentalist Lon Cerel has been practicing in RI for decades, using a mix of deductive reasoning and body language to pull material from audiences. “I’m able to tell people where they’ve been, things they’ve been doing,” he says. “It’s not sleight of hand; it’s picking up pieces of information and putting them together.” For this, he draws from his background in psychology as well as his own life experiences. I got to see his skills in action when he preempted my questions like he’d seen my notebook. “You haven’t asked yet, but I’m sure you’ll get to it, ‘How often am I right?’” he asks. “About 85 to 87 percent of the time.” In other demonstrations, I pictured names and letters and he pulled them from my mind just as I thought them. In order for this to work, Lon says

he needs participants to meet him halfway. “If you’re receptive, I can often get information from you,” he says. “But if you think that something is impossible, you’re already limiting yourself.” His belief in performing the impossible defines his shows and his life in general, especially after a bout of cancer 11 years ago, the catalyst that pushed him to develop a mind-reading show. Audiences who want to engage in his incredible act can catch his regular performances at the Arctic Playhouse (TheArcticPlayhouse.com) in West Warwick. “The magic is make-believe, the mind-reading is not, but they both deal with something that’s impossible,” says Lon. “But, if you eliminate the impossible, all that’s left – however improbable – has to be possible.” –Marrissa Ballard
The benefits that land preservation provides to the community are unending. The Yawgoo Pond property alone plays a crucial role in protecting local groundwater quality and allows for the extension of the already existing hiking trail, thanks to support from the Town of South Kingstown. According to SKLT executive director Julia Fry Landstreet, the hiking trail extension is set to be completed within the next twelve months. “I think that getting people out into nature where they live is the most important thing we can do,” says Julia. “It doesn’t matter how much we’ve put easements and protections on [the land] unless people have a relationship with it.” With eight hiking trails and more to come from the South Kingstown Land Trust, there are more good reasons than ever to get outside. –Emily Blay

The Rogue Island Comedy Festival (RogueIslandComedyFest.com) is returning to Newport October 5–9. Now in its third year, the festival has seen a huge boom – an organic shift according to the festival’s marketing director, Katie Latimer. “We didn’t want to go too big too soon,” she says, adding that despite the urge to swing for the fences, the festival’s organizers, which include native Rhode Island comics Doug Key and Rob Greene, preferred to take smaller steps last year, sticking to what had worked for their inaugural run. All ten shows last year sold out, and the fest’s reputation has earned the organizers their first major headliner: Silicon Valley and Deadpool star TJ Miller. With TJ currently having a moment, the fest needed a bigger venue, so the Jane Pickens Theater will be joining Firehouse Theatre, Studio Three, Dockside and Brick Alley Pub to play host to this year’s nearly 70 comics – including plenty of local talent like Ray Harrington, Andrew Williams and Brian Beaudoin. This year they’re putting on 14 shows across five days – including a family-friendly “PG-13” set at Empire Tea and Coffee on Saturday, October 7. Despite the success and the attention that TJ Miller is bringing to the festival, Katie, Doug and Rob aren’t getting ahead of themselves. So we’ll do it for them: this year sounds like a game changer for bringing big names in comedy to Rhode Island. –Tony Pacitti

Bobby Littlefield can fix anything. His nature is to start whatever stops, to build motors and businesses that move. He’s a master mechanic, entrepreneur, show car builder, captain and traveler – a true character epitomizing the island trait of self-sufficiency. Now that he’s got businesses on land and sea, it’s a big job to keep them all running. It’s a particular person who approaches machines with curiosity and confidence.
As a young man, it was common for Bobby to tear an engine apart, determine how it worked, then reassemble it, usually stronger and faster. He raced Crescent Beach sunsets in souped-up beach buggies, entertained the ladies in a cherry red Bronco and spun the tires off kit cars and classics, all while repairing island vehicles for 25 years at Littlefield Auto on Ocean Avenue. There’s a lot more to Bobby than car repair.

Trust The Midas Touch
OPEN BY APPOINTMENT
From his mainland shop, he builds the coolest cars, like ‘68 and ‘69 Camaros and a ‘36 five-window Dodge Coupe. He creates from the tires up, welding frames, grinding steel, melding smooth lines of beloved muscle cars with next-generation technologies and comforts. His masterful work has been featured in magazines, showcased on television and auctioned by Barrett-Jackson. His art reflects the builder: solid fundamentals, perpetual motion, high performance. His summer home swings on an Old Harbor mooring, a skiff ride away from his parasail boat where for 29 years he’s flown countless visitors. Under bright skies, people glide above with spectacular views of the sea, steep cliffs and rolling hills as a crowded island sits silently. From his ten-meter Navy gun boat, Bobby offers wind farm tours; while on land, he rents summer necessities like umbrellas, paddleboards, boogie boards, bumper boats and chairs. He also donates banana boat rides and kayaks for Camp Mohegan, because that’s what islanders do. “I’m headed to Cuba, then Turks and Caicos for the winter. I’ll go all the way back to Eleuthera, Cat Island and the Abacos,” Bob says casually. Nothing intimidates him – not a blown motor, not a gremlin in the wiring, not a pyramid of parts piled for reassembly with no directions. Long highways don’t intimidate him when he drives cross country for a perfect truck or boat or part to complete a custom creation. The ocean doesn’t either, as he sets sail for winter destinations where there’s fish to catch and machines to repair. It’s who he is. Block Island is still home, so by summer, his parasail is ready. “It’s like a new year every year, like Groundhog Day. Everyone is having fun; it’s not like their cars are breaking down,” he says, which he could fix. It’s just more fun flying around with everything running smoothly. –Todd Corayer

October 6-9: Here in New England, you’re a lot more likely to see people in nautical stripes and anchors than cowboy boots. Some of us, though, need a little Old West in our lives, even in Rhode Island. Enter the Cowboy Rendezvous at West Greenwich’s Stepping Stone Ranch (SteppingStoneRanch.com), which is four days of good old-fashioned boot-stomping, cattle-wrangling fun on Columbus Day weekend. There will be performances of horsemanship, line dancing, saloon shows, cowboy dinners and more. There’s even a posse ride, where you hunt down bad guys on horseback. Everything is free to spectators except the dinner – so it looks like it’s time to saddle up.

October 7: The Wakefield Village Association rings in the season with their annual Oktoberfest (WakefieldRiverFest.com) in downtown Wakefield. From noon to 11pm, there will be live music, a beer garden, German food, local artisans, pumpkin carving, dancers, mascots, magicians and hula hoopers, as well as a lighting of RiverFire.
Our Fluted Pie Plate is the perfect baking dish for autumn pies and a thing of beauty all year long. One of over 150 original designs handcrafted in South County for over 60 years.

October 8: The state’s oldest Columbus Day parade is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The Westerly– Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade (ColumbusDayParade.net) happens on October 8, with Grand Marshal Billy Gilman.

October 14-15: Take a stroll through the studios of artists and artisans from rural Hopkinton and adjacent communities during the 10th Annual HOPArts Studio Trail (HopArts.org). things that Go Bump in the night Ghost stories and spooky legends from South County and beyond By Julie Tremaine
Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Exeter An otherwise sleepy cemetery is the site of the grave of Mercy Brown, better known as Rhode Island’s “real” vampire. Mercy, as well as several of her family members, died of consumption at the height of New England’s vampire panic. When her brother became sick, people assumed that a vampire was preying on him and exhumed the rest of the family’s bodies for examination. All the bodies had decomposed except Mercy’s; in response, the exhumers burned her heart and gave the ashes to her brother to drink. Spoiler alert: he still died of consumption. Local legend describes Mercy’s ghost haunting the cemetery… and asking to be left alone so she can rest in peace.
Fort Wetherill, Jamestown
Fort Wetherill
A walk through Fort Wetherill is guaranteed to give you the creeps. The abandoned artillery fort is littered with graffiti and things that go bump in the night, even in the middle of the day – which makes sense, because the site at the bottom of Conanicut Island has been used for military action since the Revolutionary War. There are legends of a ghostly black dog – a British omen of death – roaming the grounds, as well as other spooky apparitions.

Greene Homestead, Coventry
Now a National Historic Landmark, the Greene Homestead was once home to Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene and his family. There are many stories of spooky happenings at the homestead, including a baby carriage moving and doors opening on their own, apparitions and phantom footsteps and even the sound of a phantom carriage approaching the home.
The Newport Mansions
You can’t throw a rock without hitting a supposedly haunted mansion in Newport. Seaview Terrace has ghostly legends tied to its original owners – including temperature drops, strange sounds (like the broken organ playing on its own) and apparitions – and has been featured on Ghost Hunters. Alice Vanderbilt’s ghost has been spotted throughout the hallways of The Breakers for years. And of course, the granddaddy of haunted spots in Newport is Belcourt Castle, with a collection of supposedly haunted and paranormal items.
Ladd School, Exeter
The dark history of this abandoned building – opened in 1908 as a school for the “feeble minded,” in reality a containment area for people deemed immoral or otherwise undesirable – has led to many stories of otherworldly experiences. Visitors to the Ladd School report hearing screams and voices from far away, as well as electronic devices losing power unexpectedly.
The Breakers
Block Island
Sprague Mansion, Cranston
Block Island 38
SORhodeIsland.com • October 2017
Amasa Sprague, textile magnate and brother of governor and US senator William Sprague, was found beaten to death near his Cranston mansion in December 1843. John Gordon was accused and found guilty of the murder and sentenced to death by hanging. Gordon was the last person executed in Rhode Island, and in 2011, Governor Chafee pardoned him based on the lack of evidence supporting his conviction (historical documents show that there was a clear anti-Catholic/anti-Irish bias at play in the trial). But ghosts tend to hold a grudge. Sprague Mansion has been besieged by poltergeists ever since the murder – think mysterious unmaking of beds, flickering lights and disembodied footsteps.
Photo (top) by Gaving Ashworth
The challenging geography around Block Island has led to many shipwrecks. The most notorious of them is the wreck of the Princess Augusta in 1738, which was carrying Germans native to the Palatine region to the British colonies in the Americas. On the beleaguered trip, 200 of the 240 passengers died; the ship eventually ran aground at the north end of the island. Today, there are many accounts of the Palatine Light, an apparition of a glowing ghost ship in the waters around the island.

Sunday Funday Like a Champ Kick off football season at these great Rhode Island sports bars By Bob Curley
F
ootball is a game meant to be shared with friends, and when you can’t get to the stadium, the next best place to embrace the action and excitement of rooting for your favorite team (Go Pats!) is at your local sports bar. These South County restaurants and pubs are winners when it comes to keeping the celebratory snacks and drinks flowing all season long.
A Pub to Come Home To
Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
A multi-level bar and restaurant, Mews Tavern (MewsTavern.com) in Wakefield is a South County favorite, with 69 beers on draft in the main bar, a family-friendly main dining room and a cozy Irish pub upstairs. The menu is bar-food heaven with everything from burgers and sandwiches to Mexican food, barbecue and pizza. Must-try item: The Pink Panther calzone (stuffed with chicken, prosciutto, Fontina cheese, pink vodka sauce and pasta) Pairs best with: Unita Hop Nosh on draft Best choice for: Catching a game in a bar where football isn’t the main focus Game Day specials: NFL Sunday Ticket on the TVs in all three bars
Keeping It Rustic Classic sports bar Rhody Joe’s (RhodyJoes.
com) in Wakefield features a tin-lined bar and a rustic atmosphere that’s comfortable and inviting on game day or anytime. Part of the hometown favorite Chelo’s chain, Rhody Joe’s has two dozen beers on tap and 17 flat-screen TVs for catching all of the college and pro football action. Must-try item: RJ’s roast beef sandwich Pairs best with: Sam Adams Octoberfest Best choice for: Watching the game after a ride on the South County Bike Path Game Day specials: 50-cent wings, $1.99 domestic drafts, $3.99 house margaritas, halfpriced apps
Seaside Sangria Charlie O’s Tavern (CharlieOsRI.com), a spacious bar and restaurant in Point Judith, is a short stroll from the ocean and has kept waves
of South County visitors and residents happy for more than 25 years with specialties like housemade kettle chips and pitchers of sangria. Must-try item: Half-pound burger with local beef from Sunset Farm Pairs best with: Whaler’s Rise IPA Best choice for: A friendly rivalry between Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers fans who make Charlie O’s their home away from home Game Day specials: 50-cent wings, $2 drafts
View from the Top The big rectangular bar at Gillian’s Ale House (GilliansAleHouse.com) in North Kingstown draws a lively crowd on game day, and you’ll need to arrive early to snag one of the hightop tables with prime viewing of the bar’s flat-screen TVs for the game. An adjacent pool room is another option.

Make New Friends A big, friendly Irish bar and seafood restaurant, Twin Willows (TwinWillowsRI.com) is a hangout for Narragansett locals and beach-goers alike. There plenty of room around the huge bar on game days, but we prefer the outdoor patio for early fall football as long as the weather permits.
Must-try item: Reuben piled high with house-cooked corned beef Pairs best with: Guinness on draft Best choice for: Catching the games after a morning on the beach

SOUTHERN RHODE ISLAND b y J u l i e Tr e m a i n e
Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
It only takes tourists a weekend to fall in love with South County, and for the amazing place we call home to cement a permanent place in their hearts. Of our just over 500 square miles, more than 200 of them are water. You can go from shore to wooded hiking trails to sophisticated city centers in a matter of 20 miles. It’s the kind of place that once you find, you never want to leave. Everyone has their own reasons they love this place. Here are 10 of ours.
10 RE A S O N S W E LO V E S O U T H ERN RI
THE BEACH. There are 400 miles of coastline in Rhode Island, but it’s a time-honored fact that all of the best miles of beach are in South County. Thousands upon thousands of tourists flock here every summer for a bunch of reasons, but mostly for our sand and surf. And while summer is great, those of us who find serenity in the sea know that you can find it walking along Napatree Point, or the Charlestown Breachway, or any of your other closely guarded favorite spots besides our 15 official beaches on any given day of the year.
OUR FARMS. One of the biggest reasons that Rhode Island has such an incredible restaurant scene is that we’re connected - really connected - to our farms. Local food is such a regular presence in our daily lives that we don’t even have to ask if our restaurants are farm to table (the answer is always yes). When even your local grocery stores are carrying food from Sunset Farm and Matunuck Oyster Farm, you know you’re rich in natural (and really delicious) resources. And it’s not just about the food: places like Farmer’s Daughter and Clark Farms have so many workshops and activities that it’s easy - and fun! - to spend an afternoon reconnecting with our land.

WE’RE KEEPING MAIN STREET ALIVE. While other places are rightly lamenting the slow disappearance of town centers, we work hard to keep them alive. Having a place to stroll and window-shop after having dinner at a restaurant you can walk to isn’t just the kind of thing that keeps visitors coming back - it’s the kind of thing that makes a community. Top that with the beloved annual festivals hosted by East Greenwich, Wickford, Wakefield, Westerly and more. There will always be a place (and a need) for the kind of big business that Quonset is developing, but having a Main Street to gather at is one of the defining characteristics of a strong community, and we’ve got those areas to spare.

As the state’s biggest four-year college, the University of Rhode Island is so much more than just an institution of higher learning – it’s a part of the community. East Farm and the Master Gardeners keep us all in fresh plants. The Ryan Center brings in awesome concerts and events - Jane Goodall, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Whoopi Goldberg just this fall alone - in addition to the nonstop excitement from Rams and Lady Rams games. All eyes were on the Men’s Basketball team last year during their surprise March Madness run. Imagine what excitment is coming down the pipeline this year.

THE LOCAL ARTS SCENE. For a cluster of relatively small communities, South County is flush with arts organizations. Theatre by the Sea, Contemporary Theater Company, Granite Theatre and more keep things dramatic (in a good way). Members of the Chorus of Westerly raise their voices for beloved annual concerts. There are big events like the Wickford Art Festival and the Virtu Arts Festival nearly every weekend in season, plus open studios at artistic hubs like Shady Lea Mill. The Greenwich Odeum and Courthouse Center for the Arts host big concerts. And if you’d prefer to learn rather than just observe, Jamestown Arts Center and the South County Art Association - along with tons of other galleries and arts groups - offer lessons on how to be artsy yourself.

OUR SEAFOOD. South County has a thriving restaurant scene, and we’ve got our beloved food icons like Allie’s Donuts and Westerly’s Soupy, but nothing will ever be better than fresh-off-the-boat seafood at restaurants like George’s of Galilee and Champlin’s, where you can actually see the boats coming in with seafood that’s so good, it has the whole country clamoring for it. Point Judith Calamari is more than just our official State Appetizer - it’s world famous, and for good reason. More than that, though, our aquaculture industry is thriving, with oyster farms dotting the shore and kelp farms (no, really) not far behind.

Block Island
BLOCK ISLAND.
Our little island paradise really is a national treasure – so much so that the Nature Conservancy named it one of the Last Great Places in the world. Aside from the restaurants and beaches, Block Island has so much to offer for people who are looking to check out of their busy lives and check back in with nature, with miles upon miles of walking trails and pristine shoreline. And with so much of the island preserved by the Block Island Conservancy, we know it’s going to stay that way for a long time to come.
Smith’s Castle

WE’VE GOT HISTORY TO SPARE. South County has so many museums – like the Tomaquag Museum, Gilbert Stuart Birthplace, South County Museum and Smith’s Castle – that you probably haven’t even been to all of them, and they all capture different important moments in local (and national) history. Then there are all of the lighthouses and preserved landmarks, like the Westerly Armory, that keep history alive. Our most beloved landmark, the Narragansett Towers, was built more than 130 years ago. That says something about how much we honor and remember the past, and how important it is to our daily lives.

10 RE A S O N S W E LO V E S O U T H ERN RI WE KNOW HOW TO THROW A PARTY. We dare you to come up with a place that has more fun and festivals, starting in the spring with Misquamicut SpringFest and stretching late into the fall. Rhythm and Roots brings in huge crowds to see major musical acts; the Washington County Fair celebrates good old-fashioned fun; the Hot Air Balloon Festival and the Quonset Air Show keep our eyes on the sky; and the RI Calamari Festival, the Blessing of the Fleet, and the Charlestown Seafood Festival celebrate our most delicious natural resource. And those are just the big ones.
WARM Center
WE CARE – REALLY CARE – ABOUT THE COMMUNITY. Sure, people move here for the great schools, but they stay because of the great people in our communities: who regularly host fundraisers for good causes, even jumping into the ocean by the thousands every January 1 to raise money to support local charities. Small nonprofits like the Johnnycake Center and the WARM Shelter work hard to provide help to those who need it. The local chambers of commerce support local businesses. It all adds to the sense of community, and the knowledge that people who live here really care about making sure that community feel stays strong.

Style for the Ages at Robin B. After a long career of working for others in the fashion world, Robin Barrett Wilson decided it was time to live her own dream. She opened her first store, Robin B. Clothier, in 2015. “I was curating other people’s lines,” she says, “but I decided that wasn’t unique enough.” Heeding her customers’ positive feedback and her mother’s advice to “pay a little more for quality classics and you will have them forever,” Robin set about designing a basic T-shirt. She found a source for luxurious fabric and a manufacturer in the U.S. The shirt was an instant hit.

Robin now has a 10-piece collection of classic clothing: “the base wardrobe everyone can build on.” All the pieces, from skinny pants and pencil skirts to a stylish blazer and the quintessential little black dress, are appropriate everywhere from the executive office to a casual dinner. A change in name to Robin B. and a move to Benny’s Plaza completed the transition. Robin has since brought in some complementary lines, such as Parker Smith Denim, Three Dots and Lola and Sophie, all of which are also made in the U.S. Beautiful accessories
are available too, including jewelry produced right here in Rhode Island. 1. Lola and Sophie clothing, $128-$136 2. Bags, starting at $25 3. Ambrust Chain jewelry, $40-$85 4. Matt and Nat vegan purses, $92-$150 5. Parker Smith Denim, $125-$175 6. Robin B Essentials, $34-$198

Mindful Minimalist Living
Photography by Grace Lentini
A North Kingstown family pares life down to the essentials
A few years after holistic health coach, raw food chef and self-care strategist Katie McDonald lost her father, she reassessed her family’s living situation and sought a solution that would best fit the lifestyle of each individual around her. In an homage to the past with an eye on the future, Katie, her husband and their 16-year-old son decided to make the place her parents had called home for 20 years their own. The decision was made with careful thought and consideration, and resulted in a best-case scenario for the loving family. “We wanted to honor my parents’ love of this land, my father’s memory and the property that the extended family considers home,” Katie says. “We also needed to have our home reflect the three of us.” The McDonalds were well-versed in home design before moving to Saunderstown. For 14 years, they lived in a home designed by
The McDonald family remodeled their family home around their whole-living lifestyle
Frank Lloyd Wright – arguably the best known architect in the country. Built in 1908, the home embraced Wright’s “organic architecture” philosophy: structures designed “purposely in harmony with humanity and its environment.” In their new home, the McDonalds, too, sought to introduce elements of the outside into their new digs, so they commissioned 3SIXØ Architecture based in Providence to execute their modern aesthetic while capitalizing on the serene

surroundings. “The true artwork is nature, so we provided a minimalist, quiet canvas to showcase its allure and beauty,” Katie explains. “Simplicity quiets our minds and soothes our souls in what can often be a harried and frantic world.” The renovation included removing walls, adding windows and orienting the view toward the water. “Our architects at 3SIXØ took the time to understand who we are and how we live,” Katie says. “They helped translate

our vision into reality.” As the kitchen is Katie’s sanctuary, the new design features an elongated window over the sink highlighting a Japanese garden and the Narrow River beyond. Simple cabinetry sans hardware, sleek concrete countertops and ample storage (to house and hide the chef’s juicer, dehydrator, Vitamix and other gear) provide “space to create, nourish and linger.” An alcove in the kitchen, one of three in the house, serves as an altar. “This gesture reminds me of the sacred ritual of
preparing and eating food,” says Katie. In a sentimental nod, Katie’s father’s former office now serves as a meditation room and doubles as a tea room for her husband, who studies the art of Japanese tea ceremonies. “I love this room’s textural simplicity and its function,” she says. For those who think a minimalist, mindful home is impossible in today’s chaotic world, think again. “Asking yourself how you want to live, how you want to experience your space, [and] what you need to feel supported by your home, are questions that help craft a house that elevates you,” says Katie. “Approach your home with fresh eyes and ask if it still reflects who you are now. A guest room that only collects junk could be a room devoted to a hobby you love.” For example, the McDonalds transformed the dining room into a library because they knew they’d get much better use, and joy, from their books, than they would from a room reserved for formal meals. Says Katie, “Consider who you are and your family values when renovating and decorating.” Katie advises deliberately choosing each item in your home for its function and beauty. “I teach my clients to embrace their homes as an opportunity for self-care. Not everyone is going to resonate with our minimalist approach. The point is to create a home that nourishes you.” And lest you think anyone is perfect: “Full confession, our basement is a holy mess!” Katie concedes. “Thought I would keep it all real.”

For Ramona Bessinger, massage is more than providing simple pain or stress relief. It’s a way to nourish the body and the soul, which is why her practice at Jamestown Healing Arts is nothing short of extraordinary. “I combine Western massage with Ayurveda, which is a more holistic body-balancing approach to healing,” she explains. Ayurveda, which means “life force,” is a 3,000-year-old system of healing pain by looking at the body as a whole. Through conversations with clients, Ramona gathers information about their lives and needs and finds out if they have specific pain-relief goals. “Then I go to work treating not just the area of pain, but the origin of their pain,” she explains. I recently experienced a therapeutic massage by Ramona that was, simply put, blissful. Ramona says she typically begins treatments by balancing the body, from the physical form to the soul, while using her Western training and knowledge of anatomy to understand the muscles and origin of pain. She focuses deeply on the back and spine, as they typically hold a lot of the tension of daily life, from soreness due to intense exercise to work stress. “Everybody’s body is like a puzzle. It is my job to look at all the pieces of that puzzle and
create a whole picture,” explains Ramona. This restorative, nourishing approach emboldens her to ask clients about outside factors that could be contributing to postural misalignment or muscle tension. With the soft hum of world music throughout the space and sensory-soothing essential and Ayurvedic organic Banyan Botanicals oils offering lovely herbal scents, Ramona’s unique Eastern/Western massage is a feast for the senses, and often produces immediate results. “My clients come in feeling pain, and [they’re] exhausted, anxious or stressed… They leave feeling balanced and restored. Their pain has gone away and body balance has returned,” she says. It’s clear when someone loves what they do, and Ramona is no exception. “As a result of being of service to others, my personal life takes on depth so that together, with every person who walks through my door, the world is left better than before,” she explains. “In this small way, I am making a difference on this planet, enhancing one life at a time as pain slips away and body balance is restored.”

Crave-worthy carbs at Westerly’s Pizzeria Longo After an afternoon sampling beer at Westerly’s Grey Sail, my friends and I were definitely in the mood for pizza and headed less than a mile down the road to Pizzeria Longo, on High Street in downtown Westerly. The owner, Jerry Longo, is a certified pizzaiolo who trained in Naples and has been cooking Italian specialties for about five years in his first restaurant, Trattoria Longo. We plopped ourselves down at the granite bar; with exposed brick and duct work, dark wood furniture and higher-end light fixtures, the room was classy. The draft beers were reasonably priced at $5.50, and we ordered a round of Whaler’s The Rise. They also had hyper-local Grey Sail and Cottrell. To soak up our day of beer drinking, we did the responsible thing and ordered the Patatine Fritti: hand-cut fries ($9) with truffle oil, parmigiano and parsley. We weren’t expecting to find French fry perfection at a pizza place, but these were amazing. The truffle oil and parmigiano were applied with a deft touch, so you could still taste the potato. (They also serve them plain or with Cheese Whiz.) We heard the siren song of buffalo mozzarella, pesto and arugula and split the Fior De Latte Caprese
($12). The tomatoes weren’t quite at their summer peak, but everything else was fantastic. Our waitress warned us ahead of time that the kitchen took an “osteria” approach to serving food: simple dishes prepared well and brought to diners as soon as they’re ready. We spent a long time deciding which pizzas to order, so our appetizers arrived first, followed by pasta. We’d chosen the Cavatelli Bolognese ($13). The homemade pasta was simple, as promised, but full of flavor, and the sauce tasted like it had spent hours cooking; the meat in the sauce was well balanced with the flavor of the San Marzano tomatoes. Finally, we got to the pizza, which at Longo’s is prepared in a 6,500-pound woodfired oven imported from Italy. We opted for the specialties of the house: the Longo ($15) and the Longo Supremo ($17). Both were excellent. The crust was yeasty and crisp and held the heavy toppings well. (Pizzas are available gluten free for $2.50 extra.) The Longo is topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, sliced meatballs and dollops of ricotta. The Longo restaurants are built on these meatballs, and they didn’t disappoint.
Chopped Kale Salad
Gorgonzola and Tomato Pizza
The Longo Supremo is loaded with long, thin slices of pepperoni, sausage, diced red onion, green peppers, red peppers, spicy banana peppers, mushrooms and roasted garlic – enough toppings to feel decadent but not gluttonous. By the time the dessert menu arrived, we were too full to order anything, but the desserts sounded amazing – especially the Bananas Longo ($9), fried dough topped with a banana, caramel and walnut sauce, and the Zeppole ($8). Do yourself a favor and save room for dessert. I cannot say enough good things about Pizzeria Longo, and now I want to try their sister restaurant, Trattoria Longo. A new Italian Market will be opening soon in the storefront adjacent to the pizzeria, with 30 to 60 cheeses from around the world,

Branching Out An ever-changing menu complements the quirky decor at the Tree House Tavern
Tree houses represent a special kind of wonder and playfulness, both of which guests can expect while dining at the Tree House Tavern in Warwick. With soft lighting, a tearoom and a hodgepodge of eclectic doodads, this converted 1860s farmhouse is filled with nostalgic charm. We caught up with the Tree House Tavern’s executive chef, Erik Machado, to learn more about the restaurant’s menu, seasonal decor and what’s in store for the rest of the year. How’d you get started in the culinary world? I wanted a car really badly when I was about 15, so I got a job washing dishes. I started at the Red Rooster Tavern in North Kingstown. From there, when I was 19 or 20, I went to work for a company called West Bay Gourmet in Narragansett – they do events. I was also over in Newport on Thames Street – what’s now the Gas Lamp Grille – and 22 Bowen’s. I was working all three jobs at the same time. After that, I was working as a private chef for about six years – at first on yachts and then for one particular guy – so I’d be down in the Caribbean for six months out of the year. At the same time, when I’d come home, I worked at the Matunuck Oyster Bar.
You change up the menu a few times a year. How does that process work? I tweak the menu about three or four times a year. When I lose interest in cooking the same thing, it’s time to move on.

but one of the dishes that sells really well is our Country Benedict. We make our own corned beef here, so it’s all homemade. We serve that on an English muffin with an egg on top. We’ve also just started selling a Reuben Benedict, which is fun. It’s just like it sounds – an open-faced Reuben sandwich with eggs on it. And people go crazy for our Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

Tell me about your transition from private chef to the Tree House Tavern. It’s a funny story actually. I was doing the private chef thing and my wife picked me up from the airport. It was late but I needed a sandwich. I saw a sign for pulled pork at the Tree House Tavern, so we came in for a quick bite. The owner, Michael, heard me talking about what I’d been up to that week, and he contacted me after that.

What are some best sellers on the menu? The Sweet Potato Pizza – made with chunks of sweet potato, goat cheese, prosciutto and balsamic glaze – has been on the menu forever. That was one of the first things I ever changed and I just can’t seem to take it off. People like that one too much. The rib eye is always a staple. It’s a 16-ounce grilled rib eye with our Tree House steak sauce, horseradish, bacon, red onion, fingerling potato hash and asparagus. Lobster Bread Pudding has always sold really well, and so do the Pulled Pork Nachos.

Cacao Butter Kisses The Barn Door in Exeter (Facebook: The Barn Door) had its popular cacao-flavored granola on offer – back by popular demand – when we came knocking. This granola brings chocolate lovers an all-natural fix, complete with an oat base, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, raisins, dates and melted cacao.
Cashews Your Own Adventure North Kingstown’s Great Harvest Bread Company (GreatHarvestNK.com) sells its signature “Groovy Granola” year-round. This classic homemade granola includes oats, cashews, honey, molasses, dried cranberries, raisins, sunflower seeds and cinnamon, which sure tastes like breakfast to us.
The Miracle Grain We tried two varieties from Maize n Manna Wholefoods (Facebook: Maize n Manna Wholefoods) in Westerly. The Multigrain Granola was loaded with healthy ingredients like flax and quinoa, but because it’s that time of year, we couldn’t resist their Pumpkin and Maple, which was like sprinkling fall over our breakfast.
