Show and Tell It’s easy to take local artists for granted. Usually we only ever see the fruits of their labor, not the labor itself. But every year, the Mill at Shady Lea opens its studio doors and welcomes the public inside to see how local treasures are made. From the works of glass blowers to weavers, like Phyllis Detwiler of Periwinkle Handwovens, Shady Lea has a lot to see.

So Happening So & So Co NtiNued from Page 15

Milling Around With Artists Shady Lea’s Open Studios offer a peek at the process Now that the holiday season is in full swing, it’s time to search for gifts. With a hundred years worth of history and over 40 artists, the historic Mill at Shady Lea, which will be opening its doors December 3-4 for its 19th annual Open Studios, is the perfect place to find all sorts of treasures. Artisans of all mediums, from photography to woodwork, are housed at the mill. Some artists on display this year include the award-winning Anchor Bend Glassworks team, which consists of childhood friends Justin Tarducci, Timothy Underwood and

Michael Richardson. Julie Munafo, an artist who makes wreaths, jewelry and frames will also be featured at the Open Studios. There are some new artists this year, such as floral designers Michelle and Courtney Botelho, artist Andrea Raynor and sculptor Elizabeth Lind. Christopher Terry, a writer from Utah State University, will make his Open Studios debut. Lynn Krim, the director of the Mill at Shady Lea, is excited to welcome the public into its magic atmosphere. “They’ll be able to see and talk to the artists,” says Lynn. “They can

see something being made, and it’s a whole lot different from going to a store and buying a piece of art.” The best thing about the mill, according to Lynn, is the collaborative nature. “They get inspired by one another, and support each other.” The artists often find the mill through word of mouth and turn to their fellow milldwellers for help on a project. If the art isn’t enough of a draw, the festivities will also include music,

food, drinks and live demonstrations. Admission is free, but Lynn asks that attendees bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the North Kingstown Food Bank. The annual Open Studios event is your chance to get a look inside of the artists’ space, and experience the art firsthand. It only happens once a year, so be sure to stop by. WelCome to CrimetoWN

Providence’s mob legacy may be familiar to Rhode Islanders, particularly those old enough to remember, for lack of a better term, the good old days of mob rule. But it’s a fascinating legacy to revisit. Take The Last Good Heist, an outstanding piece of pulp non-fiction published earlier this year that looks at the players behind a local

16

SO RHODE ISLAND | December 2016

$32 million jewel heist in the ‘70s. Our capital city’s less reputable past is about to get another high profile examination with the new podcast, Crimetown. Created by the producers behind HBO’s true crime miniseries Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, Crimetown will follow in the footsteps of

podcasts like Serial, where each season will dive deep into a specific topic. For their first season, for better or worse, they chose Providence. A short, obscenity-laced teaser released last month hinted at a wildly addicting listen, complete with plenty of mobsters with thick New England accents, crooked cops, murder, mayhem

and the delivery of a box simply labeled “Buddy Tapes” that leaves producers Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier audibly stunned. They may not be the city’s proudest moments, but we’ll be listening every week. Crimetown premiered on November 20, with new episodes due out weekly. AMAZING DIABETES STUDY Encouraging Study on TYPE II DIABETES Shows the disease CAN BEGIN TO BE REVERSED in as little as 1 WEEK! A free guide has just been made available to Type II Diabetics detailing an approach that appears to be more powerful than any drug known to modern science. The free diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin injections, lose weight

without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore pancreatic function, and even become non-diabetic. The free guide also reveals rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond weight gain, genetics and lack of exercise.

Christmas ornaments have a particular way of stirring old memories, not just of the holidays in general, but of specific moments and people. Often times we receive ornaments as gifts from loved ones, and they become a kind of yuletide totem, representative of the things and people we’ve loved, and sometimes lost. “My mom and I were yard sale buddies,” says Cheryl McCarthy. “It was our Saturday routine for years.” On those Saturdays they would take extra care to spot old Christmas decorations and tree ornaments. Cheryl’s mom passed eight years ago, but the yard sale quests continued. One day, as she was loading a box of 500 old Christmas lights into her car, she had a realization. “I sat there reflecting on my mom and all the fun we had, and somewhere along the way it dawned on me. We were giving these ornaments a new

chance to shine,” she says. “We’re rescuing these memories.” It wasn’t long before Cheryl started the Ornament Rescue League with the simple, but inspiring idea of turning old Christmas ornaments into shiny new ones, ready for gifting and creating new memories. But selling them wasn’t enough. Cheryl and her crafty partners donate all of the profits to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital. In its first year, the Ornament Rescue League raised $900 for the hospital. Last year it made $3,200. When people at yard sales heard what she was doing, they couldn’t bring her their boxes of old ornaments fast enough. “It’s been such a wonderful journey,” Cheryl says. “Everybody wants to contribute and this is such a simple, silly way to do it. It has a wonderful feeling around it.” It doesn’t hurt that the ornaments are completely adorable either. OrnamentRescue.Blogspot.com; Find them on Etsy. –Tony Pacitti

Deer Oh Deer

Meet Block Island’s unlikeliest residents

e The New Additions To Our St e S e ore Com

Personal, Professional & knowledgable staff After being brought from the mainland in the late ‘60s, Block Island's deer became adorable neighbors and unwanted pests

they first rode

the ferry in 1967, have hundreds of homes throughout the island, go out to eat every night and would just love a taste of your rhododendrons. While no one knows exactly how many white-tailed deer are on Block Island, estimates range from a few hundred to more than one thousand. Depending on which side of the garden fence you stand, deer are adorable and fun to watch bounding over stone walls or a complete nuisance in need of some serious control. Block Island had a rod and gun club back then and members wanted another sporting option, so two pairs were delivered on February 24, 1967, but only after much consternation and debate. Some islanders recount they were brought to Payne Farm and released, disappearing into the brush, seldom to be seen for years. Just a decade later, town officials were discussing how to deal with them destroying gardens and trees, they being voracious eaters and prolific reproducers with nature’s gift for disappearing quickly. Deer have a taste for green plants, acorns, blueberries, apples, nuts and seemingly anything raised behind a fence. During winter, they will forage on twigs or leaves and in the hardest of times, even resort to eating cedar and pine bark. Young does typically give birth to one fawn each year while more mature deer tend to bear twins so it’s easy to see how a population could easily grow out of control, especially with no predators other than humans. As the population grew and various removal or reduction options were

rejected, hunting became an option to keep the herd in check. Islanders have a unique understanding of the island’s geography and who lives where and when, making them the best candidates to harvest any deer. An attempt two years ago to contract mainland hunters was cancelled at the last minute due in no small part to their unfamiliarity with the island’s physical and personal nuances and their unconventional methods. The last few seasons, the Town has offered resident hunters $150 per tail to encourage that reduction. It was successful, as 400 deer were taken that first year compared with 258 during the 2015-16 hunting season. Residents have tried myriad passive tricks to keep hungry deer at bay, like sprinkling soap chips, hanging bags of fabric softener, mothballs or pungent garlic, planting lemon balm and iris alongside their favorite vegetables, even sprinkling human hair here or there. Deer eyes have more rods than cones and thus superior night vision, so those popular motion lights around the shed ultimately just light up exactly where the good greens are. They have also become accustomed to tourists on mopeds and kids snapping their pictures so scarecrows, while handy for giving crows a rest, do little to keep white-tails away. Island deer are special residents who can be seen grazing peacefully in yards and alongside Conservancy trails, looking back from behind bushes, knocking down stone walls and continuing to repopulate, all while waiting for those delicious blueberries to ripen just so perfectly. –Todd Corayer

T

he Greenwich Odeum is back, ladies and gentlemen, and with more than just a new coat of paint. After a three-month closure, the Odeum is reopening with a complete facelift. The renovations are thanks to new president Dan Speca, who is slated to remain in the position through next year. In his short term, the Odeum has been awarded $600,000 in grants from the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts and The Champlin Foundations, which have funded these latest renovations. With national acts selling out this small space, the Odeum has begun to thrive. These big artists are coming because of its small size. “It’s stripped down: the artist and a guitar, them and the band,” Dan says. “It’s [the artist] talking about themselves, talking about their career.” This intimate venue is seeing big names like “American Pie” singer Don McLean on December 2, and the New Year will bring in acts like Sha Na Na (February 18) and David Cassidy (March 3). Colin Hay recently played the theatre, which sold out, as did former American Idol Taylor Hicks. “For the patron it’s fantastic. Every seat is a good seat,” Dan says. The Odeum’s doors closed this past June for the three-month renovation project. Dan considers this phase one of a multi-phased project. He also goes on to comment on how these renovations only seek to make the Odeum better, not to 24

replace its rich history. “I really want to make sure we balance progress with preservation,” he says. “As much as the building is 90 years old, there are certain things we want to maintain.” In fact, during the renovations there were artifacts from the theatre’s history unearthed that will be going on display in the lobby.

flame retardant seats, but it soon became apparent that more work needed to be done to get the theatre updated to meet fire codes, become compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design and allow for more room in the front of house.

A Tale of Opening and Closing

The Odeum looks beautiful after the most recent renovations. This phase included completing the majority of the sprinkler work in order to continue moving towards updated fire regulations. Though still working on getting up to fire code, all guidelines for shows are followed, including having a fire detail on hand when there will be more than 300 patrons in the theatre. Phase one also saw a complete remodel of the front of house. Now when you enter the Odeum you are met with crisp, clean walls with monitors on them that project current and upcoming acts. If you enter and go to the left you will find yourself at the new refreshment area. Going to the right leads to the box office, which is still original to when the theatre first opened. It’s also where the theatre’s one part-time employee works. The rest of the theatre is still completely maintained by volunteers. The complete upheaval on the front of house during renovations meant that the auditorium had to get just a little smaller, without sacrificing seat

The theatre itself has had a long history with closing and reopening. The Odeum originally opened in 1926 as a vaudeville theatre that also featured movies. The theatre functioned well for many years, but closed in 1990 due to competing multiscreen cinemas. Though the theatre reopened in 1994, the aftermath of the 2003 Station nightclub fire resulted in stricter fire code rules and regulations. Unable to manage the costs to update the theatre, it once again closed. For nearly half a decade the beautiful Main Street theatre remained dormant. With no one to occupy it and no means of bringing it up to code, the theatre found itself in limbo. What was to become of the Greenwich Odeum? Luckily, the theatre was given a generous grant from The Champlin Foundations, which led to it going into renovations for a three-year-period. On January 26, 2013, the Odeum opened once again. This round of renovations helped bring about new

Originally there were staircases that led to the second floor of the Odeum that were on the outside of the building. With the new renovations the outside access to the second floor has been closed off and there are now the beginnings of the elevator and staircase that will lead to the second floor on the inside of the theatre. The hope is that phase two of renovations will allow for the completion of a second floor that will boast a lounge area, a bar, more bathrooms and seating. The theatre plans to get to an impressive, yet still intimate, 500 seats before it is all said and done. Though phase two will not be completed for a few years, it’s wonderful to think of the things that are ahead for the Odeum. Dan says that he is confident that the theatre’s new grant applications will be accepted and funded. “It’s nice, we do

have a finished project and granters can see we’ve done something with [the grant] money,” he says. “We’re a good donee; we take what you’re giving us and stretching it.” Dan is optimistic and completely behind the growth of the theatre. When asked what the future holds for the Odeum and where he sees it growing he is quick to say, “I think renovations will be done, grant money willing, within five years. I see five phases to achieve in a year, year-and-a-half each. We’re not looking to compete with the PPACs of the world, but this theatre offers a lot of really unique qualities.” With these renovations and the passion of the volunteers behind the Greenwich Odeum, it remains a unique venue, and a unique part of the state. If Dan Speca could tell the community one thing about the theatre it’s, “We’re here. We’re bringing in great acts. You don’t want to miss out.” 59 Main Street, East Greenwich. 885-4000, GreenwichOdeum.com

A Vacation State of Mind When Connecticut resident David Albino took a trip to Matunuck, he found a summer home in need of TLC. And the house, which was built as a wedding present, became another kind of gift to the new owner: both he and the home made the other better.

SO RHODE ISLAND | December 2016

What should we look for in a contractor? Remodeling is a great way to refresh and customize your home. It’s also a big decision. You’ve probably put some money aside to remodel, and now you’re inviting a team to come inside your home for a few weeks, maybe months. So I’d say the first thing you want to look for is trust. You need to trust the company you’re hiring to make the best decisions for you and your home. From the quality of the materials and installation to the transparent and collaborative process, you should look for a reputable, professional company that is licensed and insured, and that puts the clients’ needs first. What are the advantages of hiring a design-build firm? Having a professional team that works together towards a common goal is really the key to a successful remodel. A design-build-remodel company will approach your project with the big picture in mind. The DiStefano Brothers’ in-house team includes design engineers, selection specialists, skilled craftsmen and stone and tile installers that can handle any remodel project from start to finish. What is your remodel process like? Our process is based on open and honest communication, so there are never any surprises when it comes to deadlines and budgets. We get to know our clients and how they want to live in their homes.

Some clients have a complete vision for their project while others welcome ideas from our design team. The process is as collaborative as the client wants it to be, and our team respects how hands-on or hands-off the client is. Our common goal is to keep the homeowner well informed throughout the process and to deliver the highest-quality work. What other trends are you seeing? Currently, we’re seeing classic kitchen looks as the trend with gray and white continuing to be the top colors. Open floor plans for functionality, quartz countertops with a natural stone look yet maintenance free characteristics, and large islands for entertaining are the key design details. Polished chromes and brushed nickel remain to be a popular choice – these finishes have no limits and harmonize well from traditional to contemporary designs. Aging in place remodels are also a growing request. We’re working with maturing homeowners that are making modifications that enable them to live comfortably in their own homes. Accessibility options in bathrooms include zero-threshold showers instead of a tubs, adding grab bars for support, installing a shower bench or seats, comfort-height toilets and wall-hung vanities for comfortable wheelchair access. Kitchen modifications include motion or touch faucets, open or pull-down shelving, roll out trays in cabinetry and multi-level work surfaces for cooks of different heights.

The Albinos’ oceanside retreat in Matunuck has been a welcome respite for 20 years

Home Everlasting A summer home in Matunuck added a lot more to the Albino family than just a vacation

Photography by Grace Lentini

In 1996, David Albino’s

sister was tasked with planning the Waterbury, CT-based family’s summer vacation. Excited about the coastal enclave on Rhode Island’s southern shore, the elder Albino told her family with delight that they were headed to Matunuck. “I said, ‘What the heck is Matunuck?’” recalls David with a laugh. But he was intrigued, and despite a demanding career that left little time for excursions, David went along for the ride and quickly found himself falling for the seaside village’s quiet charm. One afternoon during their stay, David and his wife Kathleen went for a bike ride to explore the area. Thinking they had seen all there was to see, David was ready to call it a day when Kathleen suggested riding a bit longer. “So we wound up on this point and I saw

this house with a big ‘For Sale’ sign on it,” David says. Perhaps serendipitously, before they had left Connecticut, David and his father spoke briefly about looking at property near the shore, but at the time David didn’t think much of the conversation. After all, it’s common fodder when on vacation. Real estate was his career, and David had seen his share of beautiful if unappreciated homes. But this one was different. Perched on Matunuck’s highest point, the 1930s Victorian-influenced home boasted original period architecture, 180-degree water views and ample space for extended family getaways. “I felt an immediate connection to it,” says David. Curiosity got the best of him, so he spoke to neighbors and learned more about the home’s history. He was “dumbfounded” when he

learned of the surprisingly affordable asking price. “The owner was a wealthy man whose wife had recently died. He lived down the road and he wanted to unload the house for a number of reasons,” David explains. The owner had intended to gift the home to his daughters, asking them to be responsible for the insurance, taxes and basic operational costs; however, according to what David was told, the daughters declined to assume responsibility for the house. “But they wanted to continue to go down there and party. I found out that when they’d visit, they’d pull the ‘For Sale’ sign off it because they didn’t actually want their father to get rid of it.” The house had been toiling on the market for more than a year before fate intervened. It was a Wednesday when David

first laid eyes on the Victorian and the family trip was in its final days. The whole idea of making Matunuck a more permanent part of their lives was an exciting prospect, but if David wanted to do this he knew he needed to act quickly. “I knew if we went back to Connecticut without closing the deal, it would have been lost,” he says. David, who is in business with his father, says he had to do some serious arm twisting on his old man. Though his father liked the home, it would be a substantial investment as it needed work. But David convinced him. “And it was one of the best financial decisions we made in our lives.” The day he signed on the dotted line proved to be something David would never forget. “As I was driving up Ocean Avenue to the house for the final walk-though the day of December 2016 | SO RHODE ISLAND

the closing, I was so overcome with emotion I started crying. I come from a working-class family, from a working class city,” he says. “It underscores what can happen when you work hard.” While the home’s original detail was charming, it was also outdated. The main level comprised a series of segregated rooms and the kitchen was in need of a new design. “The first floor was all broken up into small segments: small living room, small dining room, small kitchen; all broken up with walls. We took out all the load bearing walls and had them put in steel beams so it was open, we added on the area where the kitchen is now, and added on a full bath.” The Albinos consulted with a designer at a custom kitchen fabrication

company in Meridian, C.T. David had been interested in mahogany cabinetry but questioned whether it would be a suitable wood for such purpose. “They said it was a very bold move, and so I asked if being so close to the ocean, with the salt air, if that would affect it. She said to me, ‘Well, ships were made of mahogany, so I’d say we’re all good.’” Because the floor plan was modified when they opened up the main floor, new floors would have to be installed. In keeping with the integrity of the original quartersawn antique pine, the couple had the floors custom cut throughout. The wood came from an old factory in his hometown of Waterbury, which warmed David’s heart. The careful wood detailing, one could say, is an homage to the home’s

first owner who owned a lumber company. As the story goes, he had the house built as a wedding present for his daughter. “The electrical, plumbing, all the lighting, everything inside the house is brand new – coffered ceilings, custom molding; everything was done period exact,” he says. The house wasn’t the only thing transformed. David concedes that when he bought the home he was a workaholic who was overweight and stressed out. “Buying the house kind of changed things for me,” he reflects. “I said to myself, ‘If you don’t start taking care of yourself, you’re not going to be around to enjoy this place... That house changed my life.” He’s now been summering in Matunuck for 20 years. While David took care of the house, the house also took care of David.

Burn Baby Burn A better kind of candle sheds a new light in Wickford

Create a cozy ambience with Romeo and Juliet Candles’ locally-inspired scents

Doug Guilbert of Romeo and Juliet Candles has done what seemed impossible: he’s found a way to make a better candle. We took a minute to ask Doug about what is happening at the store this season and what makes these locally-made and handcrafted candles just so darn revolutionary.

Photography by Ron Cowie

What makes Romeo and Juliet Candles different? Our candles are unique in that they burn soot-free. What that means is that the candle will not leave behind black soot on the jar. Most candles on the market are made of mostly paraffin wax, which is a petroleum product and a known carcinogen. Romeo and Juliet candles will burn longer, cleaner and throw a strong scent for the life of the candle. We use all American-made raw materials to ensure that we are producing a superior product. Our candles are hand-poured and crafted by artisans right here in Rhode Island and not mass produced. You’ve used a two-wick system in the majority of your candles. Why? The benefit of the two-wick system is that it allows the candle to burn clean and evenly with no wax left

behind. Other candles will tunnel down the middle and leave you will a lot of wasted wax along the outer wall of the jar. Our candle will burn evenly for the entire life of the candle. You really get your money’s worth, with no waste.

FOR MORE VISIT LADYPROJECT.ORG/WEW

What inspires you to create new products? We listen to our customers who give us thoughts for different scents, sizes, prices and design. I also like to create new and exciting scents that customers and my family enjoy. I [think about the] different smells we encounter in our everyday life that are enjoyable and replicate them into a scent that can go into a candle. What are some of your popular custom candle options? One of the best ideas for custom candles is to give them as a favor. Our most popular custom candles are produced for weddings or bridal showers. Second would be baby showers. We work with our customers and let them design their perfect candle. They can choose the color, scent, size and we even encourage pictures or artwork to be used on their personalized label.

So Delicious

South County’s Got a Piece of the Pie From the owner of Pat’s Italian in Johnston comes Frankie’s Italian Bistro in North Kingstown. They’re bringing their “gravy” to South County to be enjoyed with pizza, pasta and meatballs. In an area sorely in need of a red sauce joint, Frankie’s fits the bill, and satisfies.

Fig and prosciutto pizza from Frankie’s Italian Bistro in North Kingstown

So Delicious Review |

By Stacey Place

It’s All Gravy North Kingstown gets a red sauce restaurant with Frankie’s Italian Bistro Growing up in Rhode Island,

Veal Parmigiana with house made radiatore

system, and my table was ready and waiting for me. The atmosphere was eclectic and a step or two up from your typical plastic tablecloth, paper napkin red sauce spot. True to my usual pattern, I started my night with the local beer on tap, which was Grey Sail’s Flying Jenny ($7). I was surprised the Italian beer staple, Peroni, was not on the menu, but they did have Birra Moretti. The wine list had a mix of

wines from around the world, and I was impressed with some of the choices from Italy including a Super Tuscan, a Barolo and a Montepulciano. They also offered sangria by the glass or pitcher in a choice of red, white, blackberry or kinky. The cocktail list offered a variety of choices, but since most were on the side of sweet, the table chose beer. However, the Limoncello Martini did catch my eye. It’s made with

limoncello, Ketel One Citron, lemonade and simple syrup, so I will have to try that next time. Frankie’s food is sourced as locally as possible, which is a nice touch. They get their produce from local hydroponic farms, and all of their meats, poultry and seafood are natural, antibiotic- and GMO-free. Much of the menu is made up of classic and updated Italian fare. The one appetizer that didn’t seem to jibe with the rest of the menu was the Sweet and Spicy Calamari ($12.95). We didn’t try it, but we were curious how a calamari with Thai chili sauce fit with everything else, so I may need to try that next time too. To begin the meal, my guests and I enjoyed the bread that was delivered with a nice tub of whipped butter. The bread was fresh and good. Make sure to save a couple of slices to dip in your sauce later in the meal. We also sampled the Vegetable Flatbread ($11.95) and the Eggplant Rollatini ($7.95). The flatbread was tasty and topped with plenty of mushrooms, roasted red peppers, spinach and melted mozzarella cheese. At our table, the Eggplant Rollatini was also a hit. The breaded eggplant was stuffed with Narragansett Creamy ricotta cheese and roasted red peppers. When it came time to order our entrées, we all knew exactly what we

my family spent many Friday nights in one Italian-American red sauce joint or another. We have no Italian heritage, but we loved the mounds of pasta, the red sauce that was called “gravy” and those awesome fried mozzarella sticks that we dipped greedily into said gravy. It seems those old school red sauce joints have started to vanish, at least here in southern Rhode Island. On Federal Hill in Providence, they still thrive, but not down here. This summer I was excited to hear that Christine and Greg Stevens (of Pat’s Italian in Johnston) were opening a new restaurant called Frankie’s Italian Bistro in North Kingstown, and I couldn’t wait to make my first visit. Frankie’s Italian Bistro is located on Ten Rod Road close to the Wickford Junction train station. The restaurant opened in early October after renovating their restaurant space. Walking into Frankie’s, I especially liked how the main dining room was entirely separated from the bar. As an adult customer without children, I often seek out bar seating to avoid the kids in high chairs. The bar area is quite big with plenty of seats and some high top tables as well. On the night I visited, I had a reservation for the dining room. Making reservations was easy thanks to their online

wanted: old school Italian goodness. Every red sauce joint in Rhode Island is judged by its Chicken Parmigiana ($16.95) and at Frankie’s it doesn’t disappoint. The chicken cutlet was hand-breaded and perfectly crispy. Sometimes in chicken parm, the chicken can get dry, but not in this case. The melted mozzarella was just the right amount of cheesy goodness. and the red sauce was fantastic. I could taste the richness from the San Marzano tomatoes and the sweetness of fresh basil. We also sampled the Eggplant Parmigiana ($14.95), and it got high marks from the vegetarian with us. I tried the Chicken Sorrento ($19.95) and was rewarded with an enormous breaded chicken cutlet topped with ricotta, mozzarella and breaded

eggplant. The portion was so large that it hung off of the plate. It was everything you would want in Italian comfort food. All of our entrées came with a side of pasta. The restaurant offers two homemade pastas (pappardelle and radiatore) for a $1.95 upcharge. Other entrées on the menu included Grilled Pork Loin ($17.95), Seafood Risotto ($24.95) and a 10 oz. Filet Mignon ($28.95). In a town sorely in need of more dining options, Frankie’s Italian Bistro is sure to be a popular spot. I look forward to a return visit to try more items from their menu – I bet the meatballs are killer. If you don’t have a Grandma Mosca to make gravy for you, Frankie’s might be the next best thing.

Smokin’ Hot If you’ve always been curious but never actually lounged in a leather chair with a cigar in one hand and a scotch in the other, then Vintage Cigar Lounge and Club has you covered. Co-owner Greg Williams has been into cigars for at least 20 years, but his interest really peaked in the last five. Because of his growing passion, he’s created a space in downtown Westerly that’s definitely more lounge than bar. There are oversized leather armchairs, walnut veneered walls and TV’s scattered throughout. “I want people to know we are not just another bar,” says Greg. “Our lounge is much more relaxing. It’s for adults who want to spend time with and converse with other adults without yelling over crowd noise, TV or music.” For the total cigar newbie, feel free to ask for recommendations. Cigars are similar to wine in that they each have their own nuances. But the safest recommendation Greg gives is something in the mild range, probably with a Connecticut wrapper. There are also a lot of flavored options. For cigar enthusiasts, he offers a membership with admittance to VIP areas, discounts on boxes of cigars, 20-hour access to the lounge, access

to members-only events like dinners, sports events and trips, and a personal humidor locker. “[Humidors] maintain the integrity of the cigars,” Greg explains. “Cigars can be dry or even crack if not properly cared for.” Folks have already grabbed up memberships, everyone from doctors

men’s-only club. Once you come in and are ready for that quintessential cigar pairing, Greg recommends a Fuente Fuente Opus X cigar and the Macallan 18-year-old scotch. Take a sip, light up that stogie and enjoy yourself. 47 High Street, Westerly. 6374123, VintageCigarLounge.com

Chef Jon Shumate was recently announced as the new Chef de Cuisine of Red Stripe in East Greenwich. The RI native graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a bachelor’s degree in hotel management, but after taking a few cooking classes, he completely changed gears. He’s honed his culinary skills over ten years at a variety of restaurants throughout southern New England, including Red Stripe’s Providence location. We talked about spontaneous inspiration for his dishes and menus and how he plans to keep diners on their toes.

Grilled cheese is pretty basic in terms of execution. Do you ever play around with the flavors? It’s one of those things that if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. The owners are very adamant about it and I believe that, too. I love the sandwich. I’ll eat it burnt for crying out loud.

good jams, and I like to empower my November staff. If they can do it let them do it. He’s been making a wild berry jam, a really good tomato jam and a strawberry jam. I give him the opportunity to explore and do whatever he wants because I know it’s what he really likes to do.

how much interaction do you have with the other Red Stripe in Providence? Consistency is the standard here: our grilled cheese here needs to taste the same as the grilled cheese in Providence. So does our tiramisu. We really want to keep to our standards so we can run things as smoothly and cohesively as possible together. We like to play off each other, talk about what we’re doing for specials, even share our jams. One of our sous chefs makes really

On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve seen some wine dinners. how do you enjoy crafting menus for those? The winery rep will come in and we’ll do a big tasting with the sous chefs, myself and a bunch of managers. We take notes and brainstorm with each other. [The wine dinners] give me a lot of freedom to cook and try some things we don’t really have here at Red Stripe. We don’t have Osso Buco on the menu, so we are doing Osso Buco for [a wine dinner]. We’re also doing a Veal Carpaccio and a Wild Boar and Sweet Apple Stuffed Ravioli with a butternut squash cream sauce. [The wine dinners] give me a lot more opportunities to show the town what we can do.

the food at Red Stripe is considered to be american Brasserie. what does that mean to you? It’s pretty much a melting pot of flavors and food; it really is home cooking. It’s those braised meats that take six hours to cook in a crockpot. It’s meat and potatoes that we have on the menu that all the college kids eat and reminds them of home. It’s the half chickens that you eat on Sunday dinners. It’s the grilled cheeses that we also offer – we sell 16,000 of them a year per restaurant – that really makes us your down-home, down-to-earth style restaurant.

how did you end up as the chef de cuisine at Red Stripe? I previously worked at Red Stripe, but I left in 2014 to open a restaurant in Warren and it didn’t do so well. I decided to leave because it was too much for me, so I had a reality check and took a few months off. I did some travelling because I wanted to get some food inspiration. I came back and Red Stripe asked me if I wanted to work with them again. I asked for a line cook job, but they had me come in as a sous chef, and it seemed like they promoted me pretty much every day I was there.

Chair 5 Chair 5, the restaurant in Narragansett’s new boutique hotel The Break, offers New England cuisine with international influences, in a kitchen where nearly everything is made from scratch, Chair 5 is worth a visit even if you’re not staying at the hotel. Chef Basil Yu, a native New Englander, is Asian American and brings an Asian influence to the restaurant’s cuisine, adding creative twists to Rhode Island classics. His New England Clam Chowder has bonito flakes on top, his ketchup has a kick of goji spice to it and his clam cakes have a totally unique take: a funnel clam cake with bacon powder and lemongrass remoulade. Everybody serves pizza, but it can be harder than you think to find a place that focuses on serving great pizza. Flatbread Company does just that. The oven fresh flatbread pizzas are made with organic ingredients – no chemical growth hormones or unnatural confinement – and free-range meats. The primitive clay stone oven bakes the pizzas to perfection with a combination of melty cheese, warm crust and thoughtfully sourced toppings. The toppings at Flatbread Company are almost endless, but it all starts with choosing one of their regualr flatbreads, or one with their organic wood-fired cauldron tomato sauce. The Flatbread Company can be found in several locations around the Northeast, but each location is truly its own, and Providence upholds that. With different pieces of art and decorations fit to the town or city, each Flatbread Company will look and feel different but serve the same goodness. 161 Cushing Street, Providence 273-2737, FlatbreadCompany.com

So Approved A Sticky Situation Whether it’s the buttery crunch or the sugary sweetness, there’s just something about toffee that makes everyone happy. We sampled toffee treats from around South County, and boy were they delicious. –Grace Lentini

Bite Sized Bliss

The Toffee Candy Crunch Cake from Gregg’s contained coffee flavored whipped cream and Heath bar pieces that were sandwiched between four layers of toffee cake. The whole cake was covered in the whipped cream and the sides were coated in chocolate crumbles. Needless to say, everyone wanted seconds. Locations in North Kingstown and Warwick. GreggsUSA.com

Crunchy, sweet and coated in chocolate, Anchor Toffee’s Almond Butter Toffee was heavenly. The whole almonds nicely complemented the buttery toffee, and the chocolate they chose to coat it with was dark, ensuring a not-too-sweet experience. Available at Sandy’s Fine Foods, 15 Post Road, Westerly. 439-1517, AnchorToffee.com.

With a Grain of Salt

Toffee Goes Pop

Adding sea salt to dark chocolate is always a good idea. Having toffee coated in both is even better. The Sea Salt Toffee from Sweenor’s Chocolates was so satisfying that we only needed to eat one piece. It was rich and buttery with just enough sea salt to pack a punch. 21 Charles Street, Wakefield. 783-4433, SweenorsChocolates.com

Coating popcorn in toffee is the Biggest Little Popcorn Company’s MO. Their Season’s English Spice immediately reminded us of egg nog seasonings: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice and ginger. It satisfied our holiday cravings. Available at Dave’s Marketplace, 125 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. BiggestLittlePopcornCompany.com
