MUSIC IN THE PARK The Westerly Bandstand has stood proudly in Wilcox Park for 115 years. Originally built for the Westerly Town Band (WesterlyBand.org) in 1902, it now has a new roof and a new paint job, among a few other updates from Erickson Builders of Hope Valley. The restoration project was made possible by a $15,488 State Preservation Grant, ensuring that the band will continue to play for years to come.

And play they will. On June 11, the Westerly Town Band dedicated the newly renovated bandstand with a children’s concert in the afternoon. Families danced and sang along while the band played a popular selection of tunes ranging from Saturday morning cartoon jingles to marching band standards. Here’s to another 115 years of music and memories in the park.

The renovated Westerly Bandstand in Wilcox Park is ready for another summer of music

The Annual Audubon Butterfly Hunt Is On It’s time to strap on your boots, grab your binoculars and charge your camera – the butterfly hunt is on. Veteran naturalists and newly enthusiastic butterfly lovers will be teaming up on July 22 for the state’s annual Butterfly Count. From Smithfield to Exeter to Charlestown, volunteers will help observe, identify and record the local butterfly species. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI. com), which aims to protect valuable wildlife and their natural habitats, teams up with the North American Butterfly Association to monitor butterfly populations. The project aims to “document the number of species and individuals seen in Rhode Island over a long period of time,” says Jon Scoones, ASRI’s director of volunteer services. Since last year’s event, the volunteers have covered all five Rhode Island counties, weaving in and out of fields and encountering over 2,000 individual butterflies and 58 species.

So what exactly does a butterfly count involve? According to Jon, volunteers are trained to identify local butterflies and then assigned to a team; they spend a day in nature rotating positions, from tracking the butterflies as they change locations to identifying the species. No prior entomological (aka bug science) experience is required. This citizen science, Jon says, “helps scientists in the little state of Rhode Island, helps people see pollinating in butterflies, [helps] lawmakers make informed decisions about open space and open habitats, and allows universities and colleges to determine what they want to do” with regard to research and preservation activities. And while Jon emphasizes the usefulness of the scientific data gathered by the volunteers, he also acknowledges that the count is a lot of fun. –Marla Gagne

From the Ocean State to the Arctic Ocean When a friend asked

photographer Melanie LaMountain to join a group traveling to the top of the world, she quickly prepared to visit Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean midway between Norway and the North Pole. Melanie arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland, in April and joined the group as it made its way to Svalbard’s main settlement, Longyearbyen, where polar bears outnumber people. Blogging on her twoweek adventure, she described the snow-capped isolation amid Arctic

temperatures in the low teens and several days of midnight sun. “It was the trip of a lifetime,” she says. She learned to dogsled, saw glaciers up close and sampled whale meat. Typical meals featured seal and reindeer as well as fish. Svalbard mandates that everyone carry a gun or hire a guide with one when walking beyond the main part of town; the snowmobiles were often outfitted with rifle holders. Guns allow you “to protect yourself from polar bears,” Melanie explains. “It is a different world

RI photographer Melanie LaMountain took an excellent Arctic adventure this spring

and culture.” The director of education and workforce development at Westbay Community Action and a 1983 graduate of Toll Gate High School in Warwick, Melanie has been called “one of the best freelance photographers in Rhode Island” by the Cranston Herald. She describes her artistic style as “abstract” and “surreal.” With a certificate from RISD in digital photography, Melanie has sold hundreds of her photographs at art festivals and exhibited her work at the Warwick Museum of Art, the

Newport Art Museum, the South County Art Association and the Attleboro Museum of Art. Many others enjoyed Melanie’s trip to Svalbard. Hundreds of people in countries including China and Vietnam have read her blog WhimsyWays (WhimsyWays.com), and admired her photographs and videos. “I gravitate toward art photography,” she says. “I like to have a painterly effect in photos to produce different moods and communicate an image in a different way. There is magic in it.” –Lauren Long July 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

So Happening So & So RHODE ISLAND REMEMBERS

A Fitting Memorial for Station Fire Victims It’s been 14 years

since the tragic fire at the Station nightclub in West Warwick. One hundred people died on February 20, 2003, when a pyrotechnic display during a concert by the band Great White ignited the plastic foam soundproofing in the club’s walls. One of the deadliest nightclub fires in US history, the event earned national coverage and led to changes in fire safety codes. Here at home, it left a scar in the hearts and minds of all Rhode Islanders. Now, after years of planning and fundraising, Station Fire Memorial Park (Facebook: Station Fire Memorial Park) has been completed and is open to the public. Built on the site of the Station nightclub on Cowesett Avenue, the memorial is a moving tribute to the victims, their families and the first responders. A lovely stone entryway welcomes visitors to a quiet garden where several short stone daises

– which resemble vinyl records, a nod to the fact that the victims had come to celebrate and share their love of music – are surrounded by black stone plaques etched with the names and faces of those who died in the fire. At the back of the park is a small shelter where a timeline charts the moments that led to the blaze, the immediate aftermath and the years that

followed, ending with the memorial’s completion. In all, the space is a lovely work of public art and a fitting memorial for the victims and their families. Within the greater context of our state’s history, it’s not only a sobering reminder of how quickly and severely tragedy can strike, but of how a community can come together, even in the worst of times. –Tony Pacitti

LADIES WHO LUNCH – AND READ

Don your fanciest reading

glasses: The Book and Author Luncheon is back for an 18th year on July 12. Hosted by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, South County (GFWCRI. org), this beloved annual event at the Dunes Club in Narragansett combines two of the greatest pleasures of the summer: enjoying a long lunch with good company and reading by the shore. Each year, the GFWC brings in three notable authors with new books, who all give readings and answer questions from the audience about everything from their creative processes to their favorite reads by other authors.

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2017

This year it’s Anna Solomon and her novel Leaving Lucy Pear, Gina Barreca with If You Lean In, Will Men Just Look Down Your Blouse? and local superstar Ann Hood, reading from The Book That Matters Most, though the conversation will inevitably turn to her muchbuzzed-about marriage to food writer Michael Ruhlman, which just got major coverage in the New York Times. Tickets benefit the GFWC South County’s scholarship programs, and all of the authors will sign copies of their books after the lunch, which is hosted by The Rhode Show’s Michaela Johnson. –Julie Tremaine

So Happening So & So SO BLOCK ISLAND

Photographer Lisa Sprague Captures the Beauty of Block Island

“All of them so far”

is how many years Lisa Sprague says she has lived on Block Island. Lisa is a reflection of many islanders: independent, talented, generous. The island was her summer home until 1976, when, just two days after graduating with a degree in health and physical education, she found a job posting on the island for just such a teacher. Lisa moved off the mainland full time, got married, raised three children and built a long career of service as a police dispatcher, EMT and now administrative assistant to the police chief. All the while, she baked. Her rhubarb pies, brownies and other baked goods have always been in great demand. Lisa’s four decades with the island rescue squad have left an imprint. Emergency calls are no less severe

in a small town where faces are familiar and lives often intertwine. Now images of injury have been replaced in Lisa’s life by photographs of landscapes, harbors and clouds. “I’ve always taken pictures, but only for myself,” she says. Encouraged by a gathering of artists – enjoying her rhubarb pie and tea, of course – to exhibit her pictures, she began sharing her views of island life with others. Rather than taking multiple shots and then culling them for the most perfect image, Lisa shoots only one or two frames at a time: “I either get it or I don’t,” she says. Block Island is alive through all seasons, constantly presenting opportunities light and dark, magical and common, but its beauty has been captured countless times from endless angles and

perspectives. To ensure that her images are truly special, Lisa examines the smallest sprigs of grass, deep and sinuate hollows overstuffed with shad, boulders bronzed by sunset. Sometimes she presents the obvious, the roadside attractions we might overlook as shifting light and skies illuminate them. “Each year my eye gets more mature,” she says. “I feel that those things are out there and I’ve been chosen to be the conduit to show them.” Since passing the Spring Street Gallery’s jury process, the fruits of her passion now hang on their walls alongside those of other artists. Lisa’s fall ritual of creating calendars with her pictures has “escalated in exponential proportions” as more people recognize her talent. “Half the fun is finding the words to

accompany the pictures,” she says. Work, however, does not complete an artist’s day. “Wouldn’t it be fun if we all learned to play ukuleles?” Lisa asked her friends, a proposition so rarely raised. Everything is relative and on this island, there’s something just so normal about four ladies belting out Beatles standards or Hawaii FiveO–themed birthday salutations in a concert of tiny strings. Occasionally known as the Ukeladies or The Mother Pluckers, the quartet regularly gathers to share dinner and some practice before gigs at a small circuit of coffee houses, plus an annual charity event. “Sometimes we’re quite good, sometimes we just laugh hysterically,” Lisa says, which itself is perfectly reflective of life on a small island. –Todd Corayer

Get the Newport Look Essential summer shopping finds

in the City by the Sea

By Andrea E. McHugh, the Newport Stylephile Photography by Andrea E. McHugh

S

ummertime and the sea have long been synonymous and no place personifies nautical style better than Newport.

From Jacqueline Kennedy in crisp white clam-diggers and the bowtie-bedecked social set to folk festival hipsters, the City by the Sea has a panache all its own. Here are some local shops where you can channel the Newport look in your wardrobe, accessories and home.

Dresses to Impress At least once a summer there will be a dress in Sara Campbell’s (SaraCampbellWebsite.com) Bellevue Avenue window that commands my attention and makes my “must have” list. In a city with a jam-packed events calendar, not to mention weddings, parties and more, Campbell’s made-in-the-U.S. designs (the designer lives and works in Massachusetts) are feminine, flattering and timeless.

Nauti Finds for Home Beaded table runners and napkin rings resembling scallop shells, coral decor, sea-glasshued candles, monogrammed throw pillows and canvas totes, boat-shaped shelving units — interior designer Stacy Carlson has stocked Lou Lou’s Décor (LouLousDecor.com) with some of her, and my, favorite finds. I’m currently coveting the piece by Providence/LA artist Chris Wyllie of a vintage-looking surfer girl painted on reclaimed wooded slats.

Mermaid Chic I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen women of all ages start to walk past Pink Pineapple’s (PinkPineappleShop.com) shop windows, stop, point, smile and go inside. Owner Stacie Hall has always known exactly what Newporters, and those who love Newport, will adore. Think trendy accessories – right now: tons of pom pom and tassel necklaces, off-the-shoulder tops and wide-brim hats with fun sayings including “Beach Bum,” “Mermaid,” and “Vitamin Sea” – to light cashmere sweaters, perfect for cool summer nights, emblazoned with anchors, lobsters and snarky quips like “Holy Ship.” Do I need reusable frost flex cups that say “Stay Salty,” “Seas the Day” and “It’s Always Happy Hour at the Beach?” Yes. Yes, I do.

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2017

Day Trip Souvenirs The only problem when you go to Frazzleberries Country Store (Frazzleberries.com) for a gift is that you’ll probably end up getting something for yourself as well. The Narragansett Bay nautical wall maps and stone coasters, wineglasses and mugs with Newport’s longitude and latitude, and plethora of signs touting the best local beaches for sinking your toes in the sand will be sure to remind you that there’s no place like Newport.

Geek Chic Fashionable Kidding Around The Groovy Gator (TheGroovyGator.com) offers whimsical and nautical clothing and accessories for newborns to tween boys and girls. Owner and designer Leslie Cathers has an unmatched eye for all things adorable and fresh. Bathing suits with palm prints and pom poms, glitter-emblazoned mermaid tanks, tutu dresses, colorful shoes and pint-sized fedoras — whether it’s the Newport or Portsmouth branch, this shop is for the pint-sized precious.

The Museum & Shop at Brick Market (NewportHistory.org) is a somewhat hidden gem located in the 1762 Brick Market on Washington Square. It’s unassuming, but always delivers when it comes to awesome, distinctive gifts like “Bad Girls Throughout History” notecards (each featuring remarkable women who changed the world), the Wine Wars trivia game, books of all kinds (cooking/recipes, history, fiction set in Newport) by local authors, Rhode Island–made jewelry, nautical decor and accessories and so much more.

Historic Finds Admittedly, the Newport Mansions Shops (NewportMansions.org) are a haven for tourists, but they stock super unique finds (and locals know you’ll get the best bargains at the annual warehouse sale). I’ve slowly been building a “Votes for Women” set which toasts the slogan used by Alva Vanderbilt and her fellow suffragettes during rallies at Marble House and nationwide. The socialite-turnedactivist had her china designed with this slogan, so why can’t I?

See more of Andrea’s sartorial inspirations at NewportStylephile.com

Classic Style A Bellevue Avenue staple since 1983, Michael Hayes (MichaelHayesNewport.com) carries upscale lines for casual to formal looks. I’m currently loving the bright and summery off-the-shoulder dresses by Jude Connally that can be dressed up with heels or wedges or dressed down with comfy flats (I like Jack Rogers when in Newport… they were a favorite of Jackie O, too).

Bridging the Cultural Divide An engaged group of volunteers is countering misconceptions about the state’s Muslim community By Sophie Hagen • Photography by James Jones

I

f you look at the website of the Rhode Island Council for Muslim Advancement (RICMA.org), you might assume it’s a non-profit with, at minimum, 20 staff members and millions of dollars at its budgetary disposal. From political advocacy, student associations and young women’s volunteer groups to children’s summer camps, mosque visits and a speakers bureau, has cornered seemingly every niche and utilized every technique for increasing the visibility and approachability of the Muslim community in Rhode Island. Behind this dizzying and strategic array of activities, however, lies a small, extremely dedicated band of volunteers, mostly women, who are striving to put a smiling, welcoming face on Rhode Island’s Muslim community – before

others can assign a menacing one. RICMA itself is led by a board of three volunteers. They do not have an office – in a pinch, they meet at the office of Adnan Adrian Wood-Smith, Brown’s Associate University Chaplain for the Muslim Community and RICMA’s president. He’s joined by Wendy Manchester Ibrahim, its vice president, and Aisha Manzoor, its secretary.

R

ICMA was founded by Mohamed Abdelrehman (also a founder of the Islamic School of Rhode Island in West Warwick) shortly after September 11, as a wave of hate crimes against Muslims rolled across the country. It took only a day for that wave to hit Rhode Island: On September 12, a Sikh man carrying a blunt ceremonial knife was arrested at the Providence train station for carrying a concealed weapon, based on what the ACLU later described as “classic racial profiling.” One month later, the FBI collected the records of URI students chosen by ethnicity and race and without their knowledge or consent, as part of a terrorism investigation. Dissent, from political protests to refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, was intensely policed, and Muslims were cast as un-American and threatening. “All the Islamophobia and all the hatred,” says Aisha, inspired the formation of RICMA, whose outreach efforts at the time were focused on conveying two messages: “We’re just like you” and we have “no hidden agenda.” The current political atmosphere under President Trump, including his administration’s attempts this year to prevent immigration to the U.S. from six predominately Muslim countries, has kicked off a frenzy of effort from RICMA and particularly from Aisha, whose name is sprinkled throughout RICMA’s website; she is the point person for more groups than she can count after only three years as secretary. She holds a masters degree in Islamic theology and jurisprudence; her husband, Imam Ikram ul Haq, holds a PhD in those subjects and is the imam at North Smithfield’s mosque, Masjid Al-Islam. She

Masjid Al-Islam in North Smithfield, one of four RI mosques to open its doors on Open Mosque Day

and her husband focus intensively on interfaith work. “The Muslim community tends to stay close knit,” she explains. “We stay in our own congregations and our own little circles. But post-election, we realized that we have to step out of our shells. Interfaith outreach work is the most important.” To this end, RICMA staged an Open Mosque Day in late May involving four mosques around the state; non-Muslims were invited for an afternoon of refreshments, henna tattoos, informational pamphlets, free copies of the Quran and enthusiastic welcomes from members of the various congregations on hand to answer questions about their religious practice. The idea came from the United Kingdom, where the day was called “Visit My Mosque”; more than 150 mosques there participated this year, up from 20 in 2015, when the event began. Other interfaith initiatives from RICMA include a discussion group for Jewish and Muslim women, a chapter of the nationwide Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom (SOSS) that meets monthly over a vegetarian potluck; the last discussion involved a comparison of alcohol’s role in Jewish ritual and Islam’s prohibition of it. A young women’s Rhode Island chapter of SOSS, for women ages 15 to 30, launched this past April.

A

side from outreach to non-Muslims, RICMA churns out regular programming for the Muslim community itself, including a weekly Islamic Studies series, a summer camp series for kids and other youth classes, an annual picnic and an annual Eid festival marking the end of Ramadan which includes, says Aisha, “a bounce house for the kids and barbecue.” Thanks to the relative lack of hierarchy (and staff), the organization operates flexibly, launching new initiatives as soon as interest and need appear. These initiatives include a Muslim mothers’ group, which formed after “a few incidents within the Muslim community where mothers were feeling very alone and distant from everyone else,” says Aisha,

who, like many mothers in the Muslim community, homeschools her three children. Aamina Ahmed helps organize this mothers’ group (or, as Aisha refers to it, Mommy Network); she got involved when Aisha reached out to her about a mutual friend dealing with postpartum depression. “Nobody knew about it,” Aamina says. “She didn’t tell anyone about it. A lot of times people brush aside postpartum depression and say it’s not a real thing.” Social and cultural stigma can dissuade women from seeking psychological help, and the smallness and relative insularity of the Muslim community in Rhode Island (0.1 percent of the state’s population, according to the 2010 U.S. Religious Census) can make them reluctant to report a problem to outsiders, particularly given widespread Islamophobia. The mothers’ group has helped, says Aamina: Even the activities designed specifically for children, like playdates, meetups in the park and the monthly Lil’ Mumineen Storytime at the Islamic School of Rhode Island mitigate feelings of isolation by bringing the mothers together. RICMA’s slate of projects also includes services to and collaboration with refugees, whose numbers continue to grow as a result of U.S. military interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. Project Peacework began with Deborah Chase, who leads a crochet and knitting group called Nasty Knitters (they produced the pink “pussy” hats for the Providence Women’s March in January, says Aisha), and who reached out to Aisha about providing bedding to

Dialogue is the only way we’re going to break down the walls of fear on both sides.

refugees. “So I began collecting yarn, needles and hooks for one month,” Aisha recalls. “We had so many donations and the refugee women were able to crochet/knit blanket squares along with a few other crochet/knitting groups that had joined. We meet once a month at the Providence Friends Meetinghouse and women get together to make blanket squares to form blankets.” Another group under RICMA’s umbrella, AHOPE (Americans Helping Others ProspEr) is similarly volunteerled and focuses on helping refugees in the state. Aisha also runs a side project called Refuge in Rhode Island for which she interviews refugee families, bringing along URI professor of photography Annu Palakunnathu Matthew and a translator. She then posts the family’s story on Facebook (Facebook: Refuge RI) and Instagram. The “negativity the media spews regarding refugees and their silent presence on mainstream media outlets is very disconcerting,” Aisha explains. “So I wanted their stories to be heard.”

E

va Sasa is one of RICMA’s founders (and helped Aisha start the Rhode Island SOSS). Eva is a member of RICMA’s speakers bureau; her academic background includes international relations, Montessori education, history and holistic medicine. She’s currently studying midwifery and has been involved in RICMA’s increasing outreach to medical facilities around “care work and considerations regarding potential Muslim patients.” Even this topic is immeasurably complex, and not only due to the varying levels of religious observance in Rhode Island’s Muslim community: Doctors “are going to be faced with culture and culture often overrides religion,” Eva says. “Many times someone will come in and not

know Islamically if something is allowed or not allowed,” but will attribute one of their cultural practices to Islam. “You can have an entire spectrum of Muslim patients. Someone who comes to you who is Saudi is not going to be the same as a Nigerian.” Islam contains “an immense flexibility, and that allows there to be many cultures.” (Some pregnant women will fast during Ramadan, for instance, while others will not; Islam does not mandate or forbid fasting during pregnancy.) In the end, Eva says, her advice during a recent visit to medical students at RIC was to keep cultural diversity in mind and “just ask” the patient. Eva’s involvement in RICMA has fluctuated since its founding, depending on the needs of her four children. But the current climate, she says, “really required me to step back in.” Anti-Muslim activity has been rife throughout the country since the presidential election, including a number of reported incidents in Rhode Island in which people have made anti-Muslim comments toward visibly Muslim women and even pulled off their hijabs. “There’s an incredible amount of people in our community that are knowledgeable in so many areas that are really willing to answer questions and meet and talk,” Eva says. “We’re not hiding, we’re open to having these dialogues. At the end of the day, the dialogue is the only way we’re going to break down the walls of fear on both sides.” And with a Muslim community so small, the success of RICMA is integral to keeping that dialogue going. “RICMA is needed now more than ever as a voice for the Muslim community,” Aisha says. “RICMA is like the spokesman for all Rhode Island Muslims.” July 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Reasons to Go to the Washington County Fair The Most Efficient And Cost Effective Way To Install Mulch

1

It’s a summer tradition.

A Rhode Island tradition since 1966, the Washington County Fair is the state’s largest agricultural event and outdoor fair. Spanning five days and sprawling across acres of pastoral grounds in Richmond, the festival has something for everyone: food, shopping, concerts, farm animals, special events, midway rides and so much more. This year’s extravaganza – the 51st annual – takes place on August 16-20. Tickets are only $11 for adults, and are free to kids under 10.

2 It’s a taste of Rhode Island.

RhodeIslandMulch.com 401-782-6000

Over 130 food and craft vendors set up shop throughout the fair for a day of tastings and shopping. From burgers to BBQ and seafood to freshly-squeezed lemonade, enjoy an enormous variety of Rhody delicacies and outdoor festival fare. Meet local artisans and browse through a unique selection of clothing, home wares, jewelry, accessories and more.

3 You get to be a kid again. One of the highlights of the Washington County Fair is the biggest midway in Rhode Island, complete with carnival rides and games for both kids and adults. The big ferris wheel, kiddie land and New England’s largest traveling roller coaster are just a few attractions not to be missed this year.

4 The concerts are amazing. Known for its always impressive lineup of country artists, this year’s fair features crowd favorites like Rhode Island’s own Billy Gilman, Tom Wurth, William Michael Morgan, Michael Ray, Alec MacGillivray, Rachael Fusaro, Runaway June and Sundance Head, 2016 winner of The Voice. Even better, daily admission includes access to all the concerts, events and special acts.

5 It’s good, old-fashioned fun. With a nod to the past, the organizers of the Washington County Fair aim to offer families wholesome and affordable entertainment the way it used to be. To boot, proceeds are generously donated to local non-profits in the community. The best of Rhody’s agriculture is on display here, with judges awarding professional, amateur and even kid farmers ribbons in everything from heaviest zuc-

chini to the best miniature roses. 4-H shows, an adult pie-eating contest, tractor pulls, kids’ milking contests, bunny races and hundreds of other activities and acts are all for the taking at the 51st Annual Washington County Fair.

South County has the best beaches in the state - but which one is the best for you? Our handy guide will help you plan your next beach day.

F OR K ID S

Wheeler State Beach – Narragansett – The waves are gentle, the parking is plentiful (and close by) and the snacks from the snack bar are never more than one looming meltdown away. Rhode Island’s only state beach with a playground on site, Wheeler (NarragansettRI.gov) is popular with families with younger kids. Once they’re old enough to hit the surf without help, it’s probably time to relocate to nearby Scarborough and leave the baby surf for the babies.

Misquamicut State Beach – Westerly – Popular with tourists and for good reason, Misquamicut (Misquamicut.org) is a vacationer’s paradise… even if you’re only taking a one-day vacation. Around the strip of state beach, there are several restaurants - like The Andrea (AndreaSeaside. com), Paddy’s (PaddysBeach.com) and The Windjammer (AtlanticBeachPark.com) - with service in the sand, meaning the waitstaff will bring you some clam cakes and a tropical cocktail while you lounge on a beach chair and soak in the sun.

are home to deer, fox, ospreys and the federally endangered piping plover. Two main paths will get you over the dunes (they’re very tall – prepare yourself) and to the long stretch of beach, which is the southernmost point in mainland Rhode Island.

Narragansett Town Beach – Narragansett – If you don’t associate Rhode Island with surfing, you haven’t spent enough time on Narragansett Town Beach (NarragansettRI.gov). Three places in Narragansett offer lessons on Town Beach, which has the state’s best waves and surf conditions: Narragansett Surf and Skate (NarragansettSurfAndSkate.com), Warm Winds (WarmWinds.com) and Peter Pan Surf Academy (PeterPanSurfAcademy.com). You can book in advance, or walk up to the groups of tanned beach bums convening around surfboard-filled vans from the stores and get a lesson on the spot.

On the Bay Street green overlooking the marina, the Watch Hill Business Organization (Facebook: Watch Hill Business Organization) hosts the Watch Hill Summer Concert Series on select Tuesdays in July and August. This month, the Copacetics play on July 11 and the Greg Piccolo Trio appears on July 25. North Kingstown’s Tuesday Night Summer Concert Series (Facebook: North Kingstown Arts Council) brings in live music to North Kingstown Town Beach, including The Driftwoods on July 11 and Northeast Groove on July 18. Most Friday evenings throughout the summer, Narragansett hosts Gazebo Summer Concerts (NarragansettRI.gov). Boot Hill Band appears on July 14, and New 40 on July 21.

On Monday and Wednesday nights in July and August, Misquamicut hosts Monday Night Jamz and Blues on the Beach (TunesOnTheDunesRI.com). Some major acts are on the lineup this year, like members of The Hollies and the Moody Blues on July 17, and Fastball on July 31.

East Beach , Watch Hill Let’s just be clear here: there are a lot of good reasons to visit Watch Hill that don’t involve a Taylor Swift sighting. The chances of seeing her – or really, seeing anyone on her compound – are very, very slim. (This writer once saw a hoodie-clad man catching a football on her lawn, and he may or may not have been Ryan Reynolds. Let’s just call that a win.) You can, however, go down the rocky path to East Beach, where Taylor’s house is clearly visible, and take a selfie with it in the background. The beach is marked only by one tiny sign and a gap in the bushes where the aforementioned path starts, but once you get down to the pristine beach, it’s worth the trek. There are no lifeguards or amenities, but there is a stretch of clear white sand and sparkling ocean, with views of Fisher’s Island, Long Island and the lives of the other half next door at Ocean House.

There are so many things to love about a beach day on Block Island: the sun, the surf, the ferry ride that makes you feel like you’re a world away in just 30 minutes. The best part for animal lovers, though, is that Fred Benson Pavilion (BlockIslandInfo.com) in the heart of Crescent Beach is pet-friendly at any time of day, not just super early in the morning before the lifeguards chase you away. Just make sure Fido stays on a leash and you clean up after him. You can also rent chairs, cabanas, umbrellas and boogie boards, rather than carrying them over from the mainland.

Charlestown Town Beach – Charlestown –

Trying to avoid the crowds in South County in the summer… well, it’s no easy feat. If you’re looking for a patch of sand that will leave you plenty of space to stretch out and not have to hear your neighbor’s radio from the next blanket, town beaches are generally better than state beaches. Charlestown is a great choice for avoiding beach traffic to and from points north, as well as being a pretty well kept secret. Charlestown Town Beach (CharlestownRI.org) has an ample parking lot for paying visitors and town residents, so there’s less of a chance you’ll be turned away. Get there with enough time to secure your spot and you won’t regret it: Big waves and clear sand will greet you, plus views for days.

Salty Brine Beach , Galilee With two line-out-the-door restaurants nearby, this tiny hamlet of Narragansett is a must-visit if you like your beach day to include a delicious waterfront meal. George’s of Galilee (GeorgesOfGalilee. com) and Champlin’s Seafood Restaurant (Champlins.com) both share the Salty Brine parking lot, meaning you can park, beach, have lunch, then head back for relaxation round two. Both classic seafood restaurants have walk-up, take-out service if

putting a T-shirt on over your bathing suit is too much work – after all, it’s a beach day. George’s, though, offers service to your beach blanket and live music upstairs, if you can drag yourself away from your beach chair. Champlin’s has a more low-key feel – as in, a cover-up is a perfectly acceptable clothing choice – and has the Channel Bar where you can sip a mudslide and wave to the people on the Block Island Ferry.

Ballard’s Beach – Block Island – Once you step off the ferry, you’re officially on island time. Once you take just a few more steps over to Ballard’s Beach, you’re on vacation, even if it’s just for a few hours. While the beach is attached to Ballard’s Inn (BallardsBI.com), it’s technically public, which means you can bring all your own beach gear – including coolers – with you. If you want the full experience, however, rent a lounge chair from the restaurant deck and let the servers come to you… and bring you a cocktail in a fresh pineapple. Pro tip: The fruit shell keeps the frozen Del’s and vodka icy cold. Every afternoon and evening in season, Ballard’s has DJs or live musicians at their outdoor stage on the patio, which you can still hear from the water or from any of the pop-up tiki bars on the beach.

SEAS THE DAY When a couple purchased a home in Wickford for their growing family, they loved the location and the gorgeous water views, but not the house itself. Starting from scratch

while maintaining the area’s historic standards was no small feat, but now the Ajaj family has a home overlooking Wickford Harbor that they’ll love for years to come.

So Stylish Life/Style |

By Andrea McHugh

The Ajajs' home was built to maximize views of the water and fit the traditional Wickford aesthetic

This Is Us Historic Wickford Village is known for its small-town charm punctuated by more than 50 mom-andpop shops, a community-oriented event schedule including concerts and festivals, and a bevy of authentic early colonial homes dating back to the 1700s. Omar and Rachel Ajaj did not own one of those homes. “We were the only house here from the 1950s that was renovated in the ’70s,” says Omar, laughing. “It didn’t fit in the town.” The couple bought the property in 2012 and decided, for the first time in their lives as homeowners, to demolish it in its entirety. “We’ve dabbled” in major renovations, Omar explains, “but not of this magnitude.” He and Rachel knew that building a home in a historic village, and on a “postage 44

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2017

stamp lot” close to the water, would require multiple permits and town approvals, but they were confident about developing an architectural design that would complement Wickford’s Rockwellian charisma while accommodating the needs of their growing family (which now includes three children, ages three, two and 14 weeks). Thankfully, the couple’s personal style and thoughtful approach ensured that their new home was seamlessly absorbed into Wickford’s existing ambience – but getting there came with some challenges. “We’re fairly traditional and knew we wanted a shingle-style home,” says Omar. The couple turned to D. Michael Collins Architects in Natick, MA, to design a four-bedroom, threebathroom home that maximized their

lot size without overwhelming it. “We chose to design in a coastal shingle style that we felt was appropriate for the location and to add to the eclectic mix of styles on the street,” says Michael. “The local historic commission was one of the more time-consuming hurdles we had to deal with. They had very specific requirements that we had to respond to, yet they were very fair in their critique and requirements for approval.” Michael adds that Omar and Rachel were drawn to the shingle style from the beginning, so his architectural renderings with natural cedar shingles, stone details and hardscapes and sweeping rooflines hit the mark. “They were hooked as soon as I showed them the very initial concept sketches,” he says. But the couple

also had a clear vision. “Rachel and Omar were very collaborative clients, always pushing the envelope a bit to get the most out of the design.” By the time they broke ground, the couple and Michael had secured Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Health variances, reconfigured lot lines and property easements and met all coastal flood zone requirements. “We had to make at least four presentations to the Historic Commission before we could even file for the building permit to build anything,” recalls Michael. “The actual construction was a walk in the park by comparison to the approval process!” By then, the couple had a solid wish list for builder Steve Lawrence of Lawrence Builders in Wakefield, with practical and aesthetically

driven requests to fit their lifestyle. “We definitely wanted a very open floor plan and the kitchen open to the living space,” says Omar. Rachel had a clear vision of the home’s ideal first impression. “I always wanted a grand entryway,” she says. With their three little ones in mind, Rachel pictured quintessential family memories being made there – holiday photos, the first days of school and other precious moments captured in photos at the home’s front door. “And we needed a big garage,” adds Omar. Taking into consideration the demands that come with a family of five, the Ajajs worked with the architect to design a multifunctional mudroom off the garage for the many sets of wet boots and snowsuits, raincoats, winter parkas, summer

sporting equipment and more. “We did all built-ins for the kids, so they have their own cubby,” says Rachel. The couple also wanted to capitalize on the primary reason they had bought the property: the water view. “When you walk in, we really wanted you to see through the house to the harbor, but to make it a well-plannedout space,” explains Omar. As the kitchen inevitably becomes the heart of the home, the couple made sure the room took advantage of those coveted water views, but in an unexpected way. In fact, they broke a cardinal rule of home design: they planned a space around a piece of furniture. “The whole kitchen was set around a 200-year-old slab table from Bali,” says Omar, and the family has no regrets. “Where we eat has

180-degree views of the water.” The rest of the kitchen has more local ties, using cabinetry from Apex Kitchens in Middletown. When it came to the interior design aesthetic, the couple’s shared tastes inspired what they describe as a “traditional and coastal but soft and livable” vibe. “We designed everything: colors, drapery, furniture, fixtures,” says Rachel. “I wanted really soft tones, something I wouldn’t get sick of, and nothing too bright. We made a book with every room and every color and had it available for the painters. We like every color we picked.” So does their three-year-old daughter, whose ultra-feminine bedroom includes a princess bed surrounded by soft pink hues and sea-foam green accents.

Though both Rachel and Omar consistently use the word “traditional” to describe their aesthetic, their taste is decidedly fresh. For example, ultra-trendy shiplap in various spots in the home invokes a coastal-meetscountry vibe, while art deco lighting can be found throughout – “a traditional feel but with an edge,” explains Omar. Watching the home construction progress – while munching on some Allie’s Donuts – ultimately became a Saturday morning tradition for the family. The couple jokes about being warned that it would be an accomplishment for them to “build a house and not get divorced.” “We learned a lot and we liked doing it together,” says Omar. “It was a lot going through it, but the end result is totally us.” July 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

I have all of my auto work here. It’s the best place in Rhode Island.

Excellent craftsmanship and trustworthy. They always go the extra mile.

A Local Favorite For Over 50 Years! A design/build firm based in West Kingston, Exodus Construction & Design Group handles every aspect of a home or office project, from design to execution. Ann-Marie Goddard and her team create the vision, and her husband Christopher and his team execute it. We spoke to her about what we need to know to plan a home renovation, and the company’s new showroom. We hear you have some big news. Our showroom is finally opening this month! We’re showcasing tile, lighting, flooring and plumbing finishes, as well as kitchen and bath cabinetry. It’s also an interior design house, with custom fabrics and furnishings. We’ll be open for appointments starting July 3, and we’re having a grand opening on July 18-19. It’s a black tie open house event on Friday from 5-8pm, and Saturday from 3-6pm, with food, cocktails and live music. Everyone is invited! The furniture maker who makes our custom line from the foothills of North Carolina will be there, our cabinetmakers will be there, people from our appliance lines. It’s a neat group to rub elbows with for homeowners. Even though it’s already the summer, do we have time for home improvements before the holidays?

Absolutely, for smaller projects, like upgrading a kitchen or bathroom. The timing on the showroom is perfect for projects being done this fall, before the holidays. We can help with anything from just the materials to helping design a whole home, whether or not people are already working with a builder. What’s a good timeline for bigger home projects? Now is a great time to be thinking about next spring, because you have to go through permitting, variances, design work, ordering custom pieces. If anyone is thinking about a major renovation for next year, now is the time to start the process. You won’t be spending the majority of your dollars now, but planning now will get you on the calendar for next year. Plan for about 6-12 months lead time, for everything from design to installation.

Hair’s to You Salon Director Kenneth Cote on four decades of changing trends and timeless style What started as a trip to the barber to tame his curly locks would change the course of Kenneth Cote’s life, leading him to open his own salon in 1985. Now celebrating his 40th year in business, the owner/director of Kenneth Cote Renewal Center shares the “highlights” of his career and how being comfortable with your own style is always on trend.

ARCHITECTURE FURNITURE

After 40 years in business, what keeps you inspired to do what you do? I know! Jimmy Carter was POTUS when we opened. My mentor and inspiration was Vidal Sassoon, the pioneer of modern haircutting techniques. I continue to be inspired by architecture and by the color palette in art and nature. I also have a driven passion, fueled by a touch of OCD, to create balance, proportion and harmony. I believe that visiting the salon is more than just a haircut. It’s a renewal of your look and a rejuvenation of your spirit. How did you get your start? Actually, I started quite by accident. I had very curly hair in my early 20s and because I was working in a conservative field, I wanted it to look less unruly. I discovered a barber who was able to straighten my curls with styling. I then decided I wanted to become a barber. However, my mother encouraged me to become a hairstylist so that I could service both male and female clients – best advice she ever gave me. Eventually, I wanted to create a nurturing team-based environment for both staff and clients, where staff shared information and worked together to enhance the client experience. This led to the opening of my first location in Providence in 1985, followed by a satellite location in East Greenwich, maintaining both until 2001. Wanting to enhance customer service, I decided to consolidate both locations into one and focus on expanding the Main Street salon in East Greenwich.

Kenneth Cote

What have been the most popular hairstyles you’ve seen through the years? Variations of the bob and the wedge are always timely. Multidimensional color has transitioned from frosting to balayage. The techniques have changed but the desire to have hair color that mimics nature, with highlights and lowlights, has never gone out of style. The best haircut is always the one that’s designed specifically to complement the client’s lifestyle. My motto has always been that fashions change but style remains. What’s your secret to keeping up with the ever-changing trends? My staff is one of the best sources of new information and trends. I also keep myself informed about what’s going on in fashion worldwide. However, style is much more about attitude than subscribing to the latest trend. If the shoe fits and you feel fabulous, then you begin to blaze your own trail. We’ve always been innovators offering the latest in professional services, techniques and products. Currently, we’re expanding our spa hair treatment menu and offering therapeutic cosmetic hair renewal.

We’ve been involved in many charitable events and organizations throughout the years, including Bradley Hospital, Miss RI America, the Autism Project, TIDES, Big Sisters, AIDS Project RI and the Imperial Court, just to name a few. I also founded the RI chapter of the Art & Fashion Group. Going beyond the community, I was the first member of Intercoiffure Mondial de Paris from RI, as well as a guest artist for Redken, where I traveled the world teaching American hair-cutting techniques. I still have a handful of very loyal clients that have been coming to me since before I even opened my first salon. I have watched them become mothers and grandmothers. They are caring and successful women who are not only clients but friends and confidantes. How are you going to celebrate your anniversary? We’ll have a variety of activities to celebrate, but we’ll also do what we’ve done every day since the beginning: give thanks and show our appreciation to our clients. My amazing staff, clients and the people I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with are my favorite parts of the job. Every day is a new challenge, a new opportunity, a new beginning. After 40 years, it truly never gets old.

Summer-fresh skin is one body scrub away in Westerly According to Cosmo (a totally legitimate news source), over 20 percent of women are worried about uneven skin tone, especially during bathing suit season. This got me thinking that my skin hadn’t been properly loved in a while. After the weird spring we had, I was lucky if I even thought about shaving on a regular basis, let alone exfoliating and moisturizing. Lucky for me, I had the opportunity to visit Keely at Uptown Salon and Spa in Westerly, where their Intensely Cleansing Salt scrub did all that dirty work for me. There are two varieties of the scrub: the coconut oil–based frangipani and ginger-lime. I received the frangipani version, which left my skin with a soft, lingering plumeria scent. The service is about 60 minutes long and includes an exfoliation, moisture treatments and a facial, to make sure every bit of skin from head to toe is covered and to leave you feeling radiant and moisturized – and also smelling really, really good. Keely started off with a dry brushing of my skin, which kind of felt like getting a good scratch. She also let me know that dry brushing has a lot of positive side effects, like improving circulation, which increases elasticity and boosts collagen, and, when done with frequency, promoting the loss of water weight. Duly noted. Next was the moisturizing frangipani oil application, and then the salt-based coconut-oil frangipani scrub. The exfoliation was quite gentle, something anyone could handle, and was applied with a gentle massage that left my skin feeling tingly and refreshed. It even included my feet, which had just finished a camping trip and definitely needed a bit of attention.

After I flipped over and my other side received the dry brush, oil and scrub combination, Keely applied the oil to my scalp and hair with a massage to promote top-tobottom moisture. Then I rinsed off the scrub and received the finishing body treatment, a moisturizing milk bath applied with a gentle massage to my freshly scrubbed skin. After the warm, almondscented eye pillow was removed, I was feeling pretty relaxed. The last part of the service is a quick facial to make sure your face

doesn’t feel left out. The initial application was a mild and calming chamomile cleanser, which is recommended for all skin types, and was applied with gentle strokes and rinsed with a warm towel. Next up was a soothing apricot toner, followed by a pro-collagen marine cream to ensure hydration and encourage collagen production. This particular cream is especially good for older or dry skin, but is always a wise choice in the summertime when you’ve been outdoors, according to Keely. And with that last touch of moisture, I was all done. Once I dragged myself off the massage table, I glanced at my skin and had to remark out loud: It really was… radiant. I was impressed. And relaxed. And smelled like a dream. No complaints here. July 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

MATUNUCK’S HIDDEN BAKERY Tucked away on a quiet road en route to the beaches in Matunuck is a tiny shop called Daddy’s Bread (DaddysBreadRI.com). This local gem has been around since 1975 in a hidden little space offering handmade, vegan-friendly artisanal breads (only one variety – the legendary Parmesan, Dill, Garlic, otherwise known as PDG – is non-vegan). They have countless varieties that you won’t find anywhere else, all made with

love and baked fresh daily. To get your hands on these loaves, stop by when the “open” flag is flying to scoop up yours. They operate on the honor system, and the bakers come and go in the early morning hours, so it feels like a secret treasure that only you (and all the fans in their guestbook) know about. They’re open seven days a week – but the best loaves (like Apple Cinnamon) go fast, so be sure to get there early.

Meat Your Maker Pink Pig BBQ brings an authentic taste of the South to Jamestown The Pink Pig perfects slow-cooked barbecue served with local beer and warm cornbread

the warmer months. The first night I drove to the Pink Pig, I ended up leaving disappointed because they had already sold out of their barbecue for the day. I took this to be a good sign; they wouldn’t sell out if the food wasn’t good! I didn’t make that mistake the following week and showed up bright and early. Heed the warning on their website: “Due to the long smoke times… once we run out, we are out.”

Nothing goes better with barbecue than beer, so unsurprisingly, the Pink Pig offers a variety of them. I was impressed with their mostly local beer list. They offer a dozen or so choices by the can and also three draft beer selections (two from Whaler’s Brewing and one from Narragansett). I sampled a New England–style IPA from Revival Brewing called You Thirsty ($5.40) and an Extra Pale Ale called Flying Jenny ($5.40) from Grey Sail Brewing.

Wanting to make sure we tried as many things as possible, my friend and I ordered the Pitmaster Jr. ($60) platter. Sure, the menu said it would feed four to six people and there were only two of us, but we are not known as light eaters and figured leftovers are never a bad thing. I’m a bit embarrassed to list everything the platter included, but here goes: a full rack of pork ribs, half a pound of beef brisket, half a pound of pulled pork, a hot sausage link, a mild sausage link, mac n’ cheese, baked beans with burnt ends, cole slaw, pickled vegetables and cornbread. We didn’t finish it all, but we had a good time trying. The meats were all smoked low and slow in the smoker in front of the restaurant. Ribs rank among my favorite foods, and I am pleased to report that these ribs were amazing. The bark (dark brown crust) was flavored with a savory, salty dry rub which gave the ribs so much flavor that it rendered sauce unnecessary. Like all well-prepared ribs, the meat was tender but still had a good chew to it. On a return visit to the Pink Pig, I would be fine with just a rack of ribs. My friend’s favorite meat was the pulled pork, and it was fabulous. It was so tender and melted in your mouth. The flavor was great too – who needs sauce when you have this much flavor without it? I loved the brisket too. It was fatty, in a good way, and very moist and succulent. Some brisket

Rhode Island has never been a hotbed for barbecue. Finding a place to get really authentic Southern smoked meats has always been a challenge, and that’s a real shame because I love it. What’s not to love? Smoky, tender meats cooked all day that are so juicy, you need a wet wipe at the end of the meal to clean yourself up. Stick-to-your-ribs side dishes like macaroni and cheese and baked beans. And don’t forget the cornbread slathered in butter. Is your mouth watering yet? Luckily, Rhode Islanders now have the chance to get their barbecue fix. Those in the know tell me that Durk’s BBQ (on Thayer Street in Providence) and the Pink Pig (locations in Jamestown and Warren) are doing barbecue right. On a rare sunny day in May, I decided to take the drive to Jamestown and try the Pink Pig. The Pink Pig is located on Narragansett Avenue, within walking distance of the harbor, so you can park your boat and follow the smell of smoking meat inland. The restaurant, located in a former car wash, is small and rustic, with a large quick-service-style counter at the entrance where you order your food. The dining room is small with pink (of course) picnic tables and a couple of big screen televisions showing local sports. The decor is dominated by a pig theme with large pig prints on the walls. There is also a larger outdoor seating area, perfect for

We know this to be true because we see it in our office with the patients in our program. Yes, diabetes is reversible. New approaches in the treatment of diabetes have been shown to be more powerful than prescription medications. is on the dry side, but there was nothing dry about this brisket. If you need sauce for your meats, the restaurant provides an eclectic mix of choices. My favorite sauces were the Sweet and Tangy and the Jalapeño, Tomatillo and Garlic. They also had Hot Pepper Vinegar, Mustard Vinegar and a Habanero, Carrot and Rum that was very spicy (even for me, and I love spicy things). The side dishes included with our Pitmaster Jr. Platter were uniformly delicious. The standouts were the mac n’ cheese, the baked beans and the pickled red cabbage. The mac n’ cheese was heavy on the cheese and that was quite okay with us. The baked beans were nice and smoky with big hunks of burnt end pieces of pork. The acid of the pickled red

cabbage was the perfect foil to all of the rich foods we were consuming – a palate cleanser of sorts. We also enjoyed the cornbread, especially with the softened butter served with it. As the night went on and our stomachs stretched to their limits, we took a much-needed break from eating and watched the end of a Red Sox game. The Pink Pig thoughtfully provides wet wipes and toothpicks to end your meal without a huge mess. We packed up what was left of our food and decided we were too full to try the restaurant’s seasonal pie ($5). The Pink Pig provides an authentic barbecue experience in one of the most scenic towns in Southern Rhode Island. It’s certainly worth a trip – just leave the vegetarians at home.

Can’t-Miss New Restaurants Three dining destinations to try this month While you’re spending most

Photography (top) by Molly Lo courtesy of SafeHouse Modern Neighborhood Eatery

of the summer eating at cookouts, new restaurants are opening up all over South County. When you’re ready to give your grill a break, here are three eateries that recently opened and are worth trying. SafeHouse Modern Neighborhood Eatery (SafeHouseRI.com) occupies the space formerly inhabited by Chianti’s in East Greenwich. It’s still owned by the Martucci Group, but they decided to transform the classic Italian American vibe of the restaurant into a contemporary, fun lodgethemed venue. There are dark wood tones throughout, plush leather seats, cool ambient lighting and hanging barn doors to complete the new feel. The menu is updated as well, and includes hand-cut steaks, fresh pastas and sustainable seafood. However, some of Chianti’s Italian classics remain, like their Signature Parmesan with chicken or bone-in veal and Signature Calamari with hot pepper rings and garlic butter. Some new dishes are the Butternut Squash Pappardelle, Fried Oysters, Center Cut Rib Eye and Cajun Swordfish. In keeping with the lodge atmosphere, S’mores are on the menu for dessert along with Chocolate Chip Skillet cookies. Coming to you from the owners of Rocco’s Pub and Grub in Smithfield is Rocco’s Bistro (RoccosRI.com). The Bistro has a more refined, modern concept and makes its home on Main Street in East Greenwich. Think Steak Tartare and Bistro Crispy Spare Ribs to start with. Then move on to a few oysters and littlenecks from the raw bar or try one of

SafeHouse brings a new look and a new menu to a familiar East Greenwich location

their bistro pizzas. For an entree, you can’t go wrong with the Steak Frites, with your choice of steak. You can even add on a lobster tail for funsies. There are plenty of pasta options as well and desserts to dig into like the Lemon Berry Trifle. Their cocktails are on point, too, like the chic Notorious F.I.G. with fig vodka, St. Germaine, honey, mint and a squeeze of lemon. Finally, the long-vacant Tim Horton’s building off of Route 1 in Charlestown has a new occupant: Gemelli Bistro (Facebook: Gemelli Bistro). The casual Italian American restaurant is utilizing every inch of the former coffee shop including its drive-through, but not in the traditional way. Gemelli is offering fully prepared Italian dinners, soups, sandwiches and salads at the window. And anything can be avail-

able for pickup as long as it’s ordered ahead of time. Owner Nicole Manfredo’s goal is to cater to busy families who want quality time around the table. She

also keeps the environment in mind, given the restaurant’s close proximity to the ocean, by using eco-friendly packaging that can be put in the microwave or a 400-degree oven.

MONDAYS ARE AWFULLY GOOD There are staples of every summer: going to the beach, family cookouts and Awful Awful Mondays at Newport Creamery (NewportCreamery.com). With classic flavors like coffee, chocolate and vanilla – and fun ones like Oreo, orange and

cotton candy – there’s a flavor for everyone to enjoy. And with locations in North Kingstown and Newport, it’s easy to find one nearby. Is there a better way to start the week than with BOGO Awful Awfuls? We think not. July 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

It can take its time, but eventually summer comes to South County. It’s not just blooms that open; there’s a string of seasonal restaurants that stretch out along the sand. Some may come and go, but Maria’s Seaside Cafe is a particularly obstinate piece of Misquamicut, reborn as part of an ambitious boutique hotel project after Hurricane Sandy destroyed much of the original building. In a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Chef Rafael Rosas was back at Maria’s as soon as the restaurant was up and running again, and is now in his 17th year at the restaurant. Among various topics, my chat with Rosas turned to one less dramatic than hurricanes, but still crucially important: cannoli.

It’s rare to have a long run in the competitive restaurant world. How did you get your start? I began in New York City at an Italian restaurant, working as a dishwasher, prep cook, cook – you know, the whole nine yards. I just learned as I went. I’ve always worked in Italian restaurants. What brings you back every season? I’ve always liked the water and I enjoy being by the beach. Most of all, I like the people here a lot. The owners give me all the tools to make it easy for me. The atmosphere at Maria’s is great. What are some new tools you’ve got to play with? This year we got a new gelato maker and a new pasta machine. Ninety percent of the pasta we serve is fresh. It’s really easy to make fresh pasta, but you need the time and the right product. The restaurant was hit by the hurricane four years ago, so we had to replace everything then. The owners don’t limit me. Every year they invest in making the place nicer and cozier for the customers.

What about sourcing? The owners give me the freedom to order all the best products so I can perform and be a better chef and put quality food on the table. This makes it easy, because I believe that a chef is only as good as his ingredients. Fresh fish, organic chicken, free-range pork – we get all these quality products. We’re in an area that is very productive for clams, scallops and lobsters, all the seafood that you can imagine. We get 90 percent of the seafood from Sea Well, a local place.

What’s new this year? The restaurant industry is so huge right now; every year we update the menu and try to buy better local products. This season we added

What is the buzz as you gear up for this time of year? This is a family-owned restaurant and the owners know a lot of people. The patrons cannot wait for the restaurant to open because they want to try the new additions and specials. People are excited when the sun comes out; they want to be here at the beach. Seventy percent of the people that come to the restaurant know me. I’ve been here too long, I guess!

I hear the regulars like the cannoli. Our cannoli is made with both almond and regular flour and instead of frying it, we bake it. This makes it lighter. It’s filled with ricotta, mascarpone and vanilla cream. Our cream is very light and we make a chocolate soup on the bottom and hazelnut semifreddo on top with a raspberry sauce. It makes for a sophisticated and classy version of a cannoli.

TwoTen Oyster Bar and Grill In season, there’s nothing better than sitting on the deck at TwoTen Oyster Bar and Grill, taking in the water views of Salt Pond and enjoying a great meal. The restaurant has three outdoor bars with live music most days and nights, and offers free dockage to customers arriving by boat to enjoy their fresh, local seafood. TwoTen is the only restaurant in South County that offers sushi as part of its extensive raw bar, and they have an extensive gluten-free menu. The summer season is short, though – but TwoTen has great reasons to visit all year round. During the other seasons, there are lots of fun reasons to visit this lively destination, from Tasting Tuesdays that offer $10 wine and appetizer tastings, to Wednesday Ladies Nights, wine and paint nights, cigar dinners with Scotch and steak, and Sunday football specials. In addition to the creative cocktails and extensive, delicious menu, there’s an activity every night of the week at the restaurant.

The Old Grist Mill Tavern Built in 1745 and a restaurant since the 1930s, the rustic tavern overlooks a picturesque pond complete with a bubbling waterfall. The classic New England view perfectly complements the menu, which boasts traditional favorites like hand-cut steaks and chops, hearty pastas and seafood. The portions are very generous and include a trip to the salad bar. A large surf and turf menu allows you to indulge in the best of both worlds. Speaking of indulging, their desserts and legendary cinnamon bread are made by their in-house bakery. A pub menu available at the lounge offers crowd-pleasers like burgers and sharing boards. The bar hosts monthly tasting events where guests can try the newest tastes in spirits.

So Entertaining

THE BIGGEST BOAT PARTY Water is Rhode Island’s greatest natural resource. It provides endless beauty and a bounty of delicious seafood that people covet all over the country. On July 27–28, the Blessing of the Fleet (NarragansettLionsClub.org) will celebrate the gifts of

the sea. The 47th annual celebration includes a road race, a seafood festival and the main event itself: the blessing of the boats in Galilee. Show up early to get a prime seat on the wall and watch the festooned boats parade (or sail) on by.

So Entertaining Calendar

THE MUST LIST 10 essential events happening this month

1.

July 4: The South County Museum (SouthCountyMuseum.org) hosts their annual Red Chick Hatch. The cuteness overload involves a whole horde of baby Rhode Island Red chicks, and all of the cuddling and selfies you can handle.

2.

July 4: Narragansett’s Fourth of July Independence Day Beach Party (NarragansettRI.gov) is an annual tradition. The festivities start in the afternoon with sand castle sculptures built on Narragansett Town Beach by Sandtasia, then a performance by Brass Force in the evening, followed by fireworks.

3. 4.

July 6, 13, 20, 27: Every Thursday, downtown Wakefield lights up for their River Fire and Artwalk (Facebook: Wakefield Village). The illuminating evening includes live music, family fun and great food.

July 7: Jesse Colin Young takes the stage at the Courthouse Center for the Arts (CourthouseArts.org) in West Kingston. The Americana and folk musician has recorded with The Youngbloods and toured with giants like Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead.

5.

6.

July 13–16: Newport becomes Japanese for four days when the 34th annual Black Ships Festival (BlackShipsFestival.com) returns. The celebration of Japanese art and culture commemorates the relationship between Newport and its sister city of Shimoda, Japan, and includes a gala, a Japanese tea ceremony and taiko drumming.

Meet the newest – and cutest – state birds at South County Museum’s Red Chick Hatch on July 4

74

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2017

7.

July 14–August 5: The Contemporary Theater Company (ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com) brings a whole different mob scene to life with One Man, Two Guvnors. In the hilarious farce, a man finds himself with two bosses – and both of them just happen to be the heads of rival mob gangs.

Photography (R) by Marylou Butler

July 8–9: Each summer for 55 years, the Wickford Art Festival (Wickford Art.org) has brought thousands of people to Wickford Village to peruse the works of over 200 local artists working in oil and acrylic paint, glass, metals, jewelry and more. It’s back this year and features artists from Rhode Island, the US and beyond.

10.

July 26–August 13: Westerly’s Wilcox Park is hosting The Colonial Theatre (TheColonialTheatre.org) for Shakespeare in the Park. This year’s show is Twelfth Night, a story involving a shipwreck, twins separated at birth and a lot of genderbending mistaken identity.

So Approved Ice, Ice Baby If there’s one rule you absolutely must follow about summer, it’s this one: No good day starts without an iced coffee. Whether you take it black, regular or extra-extra, these four brews are sure to hit the spot.

Rhody Roasted Nook Coffee House (NookCoffeeHouse.com) is a favorite in East Greenwich, known for its three Cs: coffee, community and cozy, all of which are embodied in its cold brew. Courtesy of Pawtucketbased roaster New Harvest Coffee, Nook’s iced coffee offers a bold flavor sure to perk up any morning.

Nuts for Hazelnut

Sustainable Sipping If you’re a coffee traditionalist, look no further than Kingston’s TLC Coffee Roasters’ (TLCCoffeeRoasters.com) house brew. The taste is smooth, familiar and distinctive – perfect for these summer months. Sustainably sourced and roasted in-house, this is the quintessential cup of iced coffee you can feel good about.

76

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2017

 Really Good Morning For sipping with a side of shopping, stop by Junk and Java (Facebook: Junk & Java) in Westerly, a hybrid coffee and gift shop, with iced coffee as fresh as the freshly roasted beans it’s made from. The mild blend is easy to sip with or without all the fixin’s, though if you choose to add one of their just-out-of-the-oven pastries, we wouldn’t blame you.

Photography by Meghan H. Follett

Offering eight flavors of iced coffee daily, Sophie’s Brewhouse (Facebook: Sophie’s Brewhouse) in Exeter has no shortage of taste. Their most popular brew, however, is hazelnut; it has just the right amount of sweetness, and while the flavor of coffee definitely makes an appearance, hazelnut unmistakably steals the spotlight.
