Block Island An island escape in under an hour Located about 13 miles (or approximately a 55-minute ferry ride) from Point Judith in Narragansett, Block Island is a getaway in South County’s backyard. This secluded island spends most months as a sleepy rural hideaway with a year-round population of just over 1,000, but in the summer it morphs into a booming resort town with a bustling center of shopping, dining and entertainment. That lively tourism industry is but one facet of an island that also boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoiled green spaces found anywhere in the country.

The Block Island Ferry (401-783-7996, blockislandferry.com) departs from Point Judith (Narragansett) and Newport, with both a high speed ferry (both locations) and a traditional, slower option (Point Judith only). There is overnight parking available, but Little Rest Livery (401-294-1414, littlerestlimo. com) also offers car service to the ferry.
Block Island is easy to navigate without a car, whether on foot or otherwise. Three of the most popular options are cab, bicycle and moped. McGovern’s Cab (401862-6087, mcgovernstaxi.com) and Mig’s Rig Taxi (401-480-0493, migsrigtaxi.com) are relatively inexpensive and operate into the later hours. For more of a guided journey, try Block Island Taxi Tours (401-4662562), which last about an hour. Charlestown-Richmond-Hopkinton A rural hideaway with big-time events Colloquially known as Chariho, these three thinly populated towns encompass several villages that are themselves common reference points for locals, including Hope Valley, Carolina, Wyoming and Ashaway. Together they offer a taste of both South County’s lively tourism industry of today and its rural past. Charlestown is the only one of the three on the water, and thus home to Chariho’s only beaches, with both a town and a state beach occupying the narrow strip of land that encircles the coastal lagoon Ninigret Pond. Ninigret Park is a 227-acre park that is sprawling in both its size and the range of activities offered, with a playground, ball fields, bicycle path, tennis and basketball courts, freshwater pond with beach, and picnic areas. Hopkinton and neighboring Richmond share the historic village of Hope Valley, the center of which is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. East Greenwich City chic meets South County charm The northernmost town in what is generally considered South County, East Greenwich is also the least “beachy” of its waterfront communities. Its charming Main Street, however, is probably the closest thing you’ll find in the area to a dense cluster of city-style activity. Its location on Greenwich Cove, with several dockside restaurants, also makes East Greenwich a popular place for boaters.

Up until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1775 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

Jamestown Small town charm with island vistas Jamestown occupies Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. Of course, this is Rhode Island, so don’t let “second biggest” mislead you: Conanicut Island is only nine miles long by one mile wide. The island is connected to the mainland at Saunderstown by the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge, and to Aquidneck Island by the iconic Newport Bridge. Route 138 runs across both bridges, easily connecting South County with Jamestown. It makes for both a quick jaunt and a scenic drive. Jamestown retains much of its rural character and quiet charm. There is lots of open space, very little in the way of suburban development, a town center that is more traditional village than commercial sprawl, and plenty of historic sites that dot the island. Those who like to explore on foot or by bicycle will find Jamestown a perfect place to spend a quiet day outdoors. Car traffic on the island is light. There are great parks, plenty of unspoiled beauty, lots of historic sights, and lovely water views just about everywhere.

Newport America’s original resort town
Known for history, fine dining, nightlife, festivals, beaches, mansions
Good for young singles, families, couples, foodies, sailors, music fans
Though it is not part
of South County, Newport is only about 20 minutes away (take Route 138 East from Route 1, the main artery through South County), and can easily fill up a whole day (or night). The City by the Sea became famous during the Gilded Age as the summer playground of wealthy families like the Astors, the Vanderbilts and the Dukes. Though the age of the iconic Newport mansions (or, as those who built them called them, “summer cottages”) has come and gone, it remains a lively summer boomtown and a destination known the world over. It boasts probably the best fine dining in the state outside of Providence, several of the summer’s biggest festivals and, of course, those “cottages,” most of which are open for tours.

Rosecliff, on Bellevue Avenue, is one of Newport’s iconic mansions
Newport in a Day Here are some suggestions for making the most of the quick jaunt across the bridge and having a jam-packed day in Newport. Morning Hit the beach. Easton’s Beach (commonly known as 1st Beach) is on Memorial Boulevard just at the base of the famous Cliff Walk (more on that later). It’s one of the most popular beaches in the state and offers plenty of amenities, including a snack bar and carousel, and lots of action like volleyball tournaments. Walk down the shoreline a ways, and you’ll cross into
Middletown’s Atlantic Beach, which boasts the Atlantic Beach Club (55 Purgatory Rd. Middletown. 401-847-2750, atlanticbeachclub.com), a lively place to see a band and sip a drink by the water. Families looking for a more peaceful day and calmer waters should check out Gooseberry Beach on Ocean Avenue, which is more secluded in a set back cove. Early Afternoon Time to explore some of Newport’s history. Most of the famed mansions have been turned into museums that are open for tours. Highlights include the Breakers, grand summer home to the Vanderbilts;

America’s original resort town Marble House, so named for obvious reasons; and Rosecliff, which has been a backdrop for movies like The Great Gatsby, True Lies and Amistad. If you prefer a little more fresh air with your history, try the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path that overlooks the ocean on one side and many of the mansions on the other. newportmansions.org, cliffwalk.com Late Afternoon Now it’s time to explore the main drags in downtown Newport. Thames Street and America’s Cup Avenue, along with the wharfs that run off them, are packed with restaurants, shops and attractions. Many of the city’s most revered restaurants are along these strips, and they offer outdoor patios and lounges where you can try the food that made them famous with committing to a fancy sit-down dinner. Try the Waterside Patio & Bar at the Black Pearl (Bannister’s Wharf, 401-846-5264, blackpearlnewport. com), the Midway Bar at Clarke Cooke House (Bannister’s Wharf, 401-849-2900, clarkecooke.com) or the outdoor seating at The Mooring (Sayer’s Wharf, 401-846-2260, mooringrestaurant.com). Yachting Center (4 Commercial Wharf, newportwaterfrontevents.com), which hosts events all summer long, including the Great Chowder Cook-off (June 1), the Sunset Music Series (various dates), the Summer Comedy Series (various dates), the Blues & BBQ Festival (July 20) and the Waterfront Reggae Festival (August 10). If you’re hungry for dinner, Newport offers some of the best fine dining in the state. Some of the more critically acclaimed choices include Tallulah on Thames (464 Thames St., 401-8492433, tallulahonthames.com), known for its seasonal, market-driven menu; The Spiced Pear (117 Memorial Blvd. 401-847-2244, thechanler.com/dining) in the Chanler hotel, which epitomizes haute cuisine; Thames Street Kitchen (677 Thames St. 401-846-9100, thamesstreetkitchen.com) and Salvation Café (140 Broadway. 401-847-2620, salvationcafe.com), part of the young vanguard of restaurants offering high-end fare without the fine dining fuss; and Castle Hill Inn (590 Ocean Ave. 401-849-
3885, castlehillinn.com), a top notch restaurant in a gorgeous seaside resort. After Hours Newport’s nightlife is much more of a city scene than anything in South County. Broadway is a densely clustered strip of hip bars and restaurants favored by the locals, including Norey’s (156 Broadway. 401-847-4971, noreys.com), a craft beer bar; Pour Judgement (32 Broadway. 401-619-2115, pourjudgement.com), a local favorite watering hole; and Fifth Element (111 Broadway. 401-619-2552, thefifthri.com), a stylish bar and grill. Back downtown, Newport Blues Café (286 Thames St. 401-841-5510, newportblues.com), One Pelham East (270 Thames St. 401-847-9460, thepelham. com) and The Rhino Bar (337 Thames St. 401-846-0707, therhinobar.com) are all popular spots for live music. Fluke Wine Bar (41 Bowens Wharf. 401-8497778, flukewinebar.com) and Christie’s (14 Perry Mill Wharf. 401-847-5400, christiesofnewport.com) are known for their trendy bar scenes. SO Summer

Westerly A beach town, a music town, and lots of food The southernmost town in the state, Westerly is equal parts beach town and thriving city center. Known for its Italian culture, dining and abundance of live music and theatre venues, Westerly is also home to beach hamlets like Misquamicut, Weekapaug and Watch Hill.
Known for beaches and beach houses, music, restaurants and bars, historic downtown, Italian food
Good for families, singles, foodies, surfers and other water sports enthusiasts, fishermen
A Taste of Italy Westerly’s iconic food is sopressata, an Italian sausage known in its local iteration as “soupy.” It’s made in basements all over town, and every family has its own recipe, but it’s also available to the public from Dippers Packing Co. Inc. (55 Ledward Ave. 401-596-3951, supri.com), Phil’s Market Place (116 Granite St. 401-637-4885, philsmarketplaceri.com) and Dunns Corners Market (5 Langworthy Rd. 401-322-1660, dunnscornersmarket.com). Italian restaurants also abound in downtown Westerly, from the wise guy-inspired Cafe Longo (12 Canal St. 401-3152952, cafelongo.com) to classic Italian at Vetrano’s (130 Granite St. 401-348-
The Fountain in Wilcox Park
5050, vetranosrestaurant.com) to delicious prepared meals at Fra’s Italian Gourmet (57 Shore Rd. 401-596-2888, frasitaliangourmet.com).
Get Some Culture Westerly has more on-stage entertainment than any other town in southern Rhode Island. It’s home to the Chorus of Westerly, which performs Summer Pops concerts in Wilcox Park; the Granite Theatre and the Colonial Theater, which hosts an annual Shakespeare in the Park; and the famed Knickerbocker Café, where the forever-touring, multi-Grammy Award
winning Roomful of Blues was formed in the 1960s and remains the house band.

Hit the Beach Misquamicut refers to both the state beach and the neighborhood that surrounds it, and this long strip of coastline, beach bars and hotels along Atlantic Avenue is the liveliest place in town during the summer months. It was also the area of Rhode Island that was hit hardest during Superstorm Sandy last October, with sand dunes leveled and structures washed away. However, the recovery effort is already underway and the area is
springing back to life. You’ll find more dining, shopping and attractions than we have room to discuss here, but highlights include Water Wizz waterslide park (328 Atlantic Ave. 401-322-0520, waterwizzri. com), Paddy’s Beach Bar (159 Atlantic Ave. 401-596-2610, paddysbeach.com), and Atlantic Beach Park (321 Atlantic Ave. 401-322-0504, atlanticbeachpark. com), which offers dining, amusement rides and live music. Many of the local businesses and attractions are still in various stages of recovery, so check misquamicut.org for info and updates.

Wickford Find quintessential New England in this waterfront village With its concentration of unique stores and beautiful scenery, Wickford is a natural gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The village (in larger North Kingstown) is clustered at the confluence of Brown and Main Streets and Wickford Harbor, making for a setting that’s easily walkable in 10 minutes, but where you could spend hours strolling, shopping and eating. Prolific author John Updike was so taken with Wickford that he based his novel The Witches of Eastwick on the town.

Southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter or hear about plenty of “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. When asking locals for suggestions, you may be referred to strange places like Galilee, Wyoming and Usquepaugh, only to be confounded by your attempts to GPS them. That is because many of the towns are actually collections of small villages that were incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.
