Summer Loving Welcome to Rhode Island! Whether you’re staying for a weekend or the whole season (which must be nice), you’ve come to the right place. Even the locals dream about spending the summer in South County. Our beaches are the best in the Northeast, we’ve got the highest ratio of farms to population in the country, and our seafood, well… there’s a reason it gets shipped all over the world. We hope you’ve come hungry, and ready for a fun-filled vacation that leaves plenty of time for kicking back and soaking in the sun (cocktail optional, but recommended). Enjoy your trip.

What’s In a Name? In your travels through Southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter plenty of unofficial names for places. Even the name “South County” is itself a colloquial creation, encompassing most of Washington County, and one town each from Kent and Newport Counties. You’ll also hear lots of references to “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. Locals may direct you to strange places, like Galilee, Wyoming and Usquepaugh, that will confuse and confound your GPS. That is because many of the towns in South County are actually collections of small villages that were later incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.

east GReeNWICH’s HIstORY Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by
a 1775 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums: the Varnum House Museum and the Varnum Armory. Built in 1733 by Major General James Mitchell Varnum (who served under George Washington and was a member of the Continental Congress), the Varnum House museum is a Georgian mansion that is a time capsule of early American life. It houses 17th century furniture and household items. The Varnum memorial armory houses a military history museum, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and weapons from World Wars I and II. This corner of Narragansett is best known as the fishing port of Pt. Judith – home of Rhode Island’s famous calamari – but the village of Galilee has a lot more to offer for fun and food. Beach BiteS Salty Brine Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. The sea wall between it and the passing Block Island Ferry makes for few waves and good visibility in the water. It’s also home to two Rhody food icons, George’s of Galilee and champlin’s Seafood, that are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including an outdoor Channel Bar where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walk-up window for beach snacks and a full restaurant inside. Their upstairs bar and patio has live music in the afternoons and evenings and has a view of the beach. FreSh oFF the Boat There’s a reason you see Pt. Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island (and, let’s face it, all over the country): it’s simply the best. Reasons to go to George’s of Galilee
The food selection is amazing. The menu alone at George’s of Galilee will make your mouth water. Seafood is their sig-
nature speciality, be it grilled, sauteed, baked or fried. Clams, shrimp, oysters, lobster, mussels, fluke, salmon are just a sampling of what’s available on the award-winning seafood menu. Hand-cut ribeye steaks, freshly made pastas, sushi, healthy options (such as gluten, lactose free and vegan dishes) and kids favorites are also among the delicious options available for lunch and dinner.
2
The fish is fresh off the boat. Nestled in the port of Galilee, George’s is committed to the fishing village and its com-
munity of commercial fishermen. The restaurant buys their fish directly from day boats to serve fresh and responsibly caught.
3
It’s the place to be.
Overlooking Salty Brine Beach,
there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than updating your In-
stagram from George’s picture perfect outdoor patio. With seven dining rooms on two floors that seat upwards of 500 people, you can always find people having a great time at George’s. In the summer, the covered upstairs deck and outdoor dining area brim with lively bars and live music and entertainment seven days a week.
4
It’s a Rhode Island icon.
A local tradition since 1948,
the third generation family restaurant continues to delight diners
with its outstanding food, sweeping waterfront views and customer service. Dining here is more than just a meal – it’s an experience.
5
There’s always something going on. From live mu-
sic and summer volleyball leagues to beach blanket service and all-
you-can-eat Friday Fish Fest, there’s plenty of fun to be had at George’s.

The towns of Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton, colloquially known as Chariho, are rural hideaways that offer some of South County’s best coastal and wooded scenery. a MaGiCal eXCursioN Contrary to its name, the Fantastic umbrella Factory does not make, or even sell, umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a fantastic place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar. candy to local art. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is a unique greenhouse, and there are perennial gardens filled with flowers and sculptures throughout the property with places to sit and take everything in. There’s a bamboo maze, and a barnyard filled with emus, goats and chickens. And after you’ve done all that, there’s Small Axe Cafe, a BYOB restaurant that serves food made with vegetables grown on the property. 4820 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 401-364-1060, FantasticUmbrellaFactory.com
uNusual eats Chariho has its share of delicious restaurants, but two are unlike any other in Rhode Island. the Nordic lodge is a lakeside restaurant in Charlestown that brings in customers by the busload, literally, to get a taste of their seafood buffet. The price tag is high – $93 per adult – but the spread is worth it: all you can eat lobster, crab, raw bar, prime rib, filet, bacon-wrapped scallops, lobster bisque, shrimp scampi and lobster mac and cheese (to name a few), plus a salad bar, a dessert bar and soft drinks. There’s also an a la carte menu for smaller appetites. Nordic Lodge: 178 East Pasquiset Trail, Charlestown. 401-783-4515, NordicLodge.com
The Charlestown rathskeller is a piece of South County history, revived from a speakeasy in operation in that building 80 years ago. Now, the Rathskeller is a go-to hangout for locals. The kitchen serves gastropub favorites like the Duck & Sausage plate (crispy confit duck leg and German-style bockwurst with braised red cabbage), a Bacon Blue Burger (with blue cheese, bacon, pickled onions and arugula) and their signature Rathskeller Fries plain, loaded, with truffled pecorino or with short rib gravy. Before or after dinner, the lawn has lawn games – their cornhole tournament is on Thursday evenings – and the restaurant often hosts live music. 489A Old Coach Road, Charlestown.

Great-Grandfather DeLucia made his first frozen lemonade back in Italy in 1840. During the winter, he carried snow into nearby caves and insulated it with straw. When summer arrived, he mixed the snow with fresh, local lemon juice and sugar, making a refreshing drink. His grandson, Angelo, introduced this icy treat to Rhode Island in 1948, and today there are over 30 Del’s stands across America. ’Gansett is proud to present this delicious Shandy with the perfect balance of Narragansett Lager and lemon flavor.

RHode iSland’S MoonRiSe KinGdoM Beavertail State Park is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of four picnic-friendly vistas and from the hiking trails throughout. Beavertail is also home to a lighthouse and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes from Moonrise Kingdom there. iSland eaTS For an island with only 5,000 residents, Jamestown has a lot of delicious dining options. Here’s a taste of a few: Jamestown Fish is one of the state’s finest seafood restaurants, helmed by Executive Chef (and James Beard Award nominee) Matthew MacCartney. The main dining room offers fresh-from-the-sea fine dining, while the upstairs lounge and outdoor bar have a more casual menu. The patio also has couches for sunset cocktails, complete with fire pits for after the sun goes down. 14
Narragansett Avenue. 401-4233474, JamestownFishRI.com Across the street, Simpatico Jamestown serves an eclectic menu that blends classic Rhode Island foods with worldly flavors. While you can eat inside, you really should choose a table outdoors, especially with a date. The perfectly romantic outdoor dining areas include a bar, a garden and terraced decks. 13 Narragansett Avenue. 401-423-2000, SimpaticoJamestown.com The island’s newest restaurant is J22 Tap and Table, named after the J22 racing boat, is a great example of keeping things small and doing them right. The restaurant has only 10 tables and a bar that seats 12, and a small menu that changes often, but don’t let that stop you. The small scale means that every ingredient is hyper-local and at the peak of freshness, and that everything,
down to the cocktail sauce, is made in-house. 22 Narragansett Avenue. 401-423-3709, Facebook.com/J22TapandTable
liVinG HiSToRY Jamestown is only nine miles long and one mile wide, but there’s a lot of history on the island. Fort Wetherill, an abandoned military fort, is a mustsee destination. Besides the fort itself, which has become something of a graffiti art museum, the views from the cliffs of this 100-foot vantage are stunning. It’s also a popular spot for SCUBA divers. BiKiNg free wheeling Take a ride on South County’s bike paths By Rebecca Remillard WilliaM C. O’neill Bike PaTh • length: 7.1 miles • Point of Origin: Kingston Train Station, 1 Railroad Ave, West Kingston Formerly known as the South County Bike Path, this popular trail is located on the former Narragansett Pier Railroad, constructed in 1876. Winding through the villages of South Kingstown, the path spans the Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area where migratory birds are frequent fliers. Slow your wheels just beyond Curtis Corner Middle School where footpaths to the left and right lead to Tri-Ponds Park, consisting of three ponds, streams, two miles of nature trails, and a plethora of both furry and feathered wildlife.
avOnDale FaRM PReseRve • length: 0.6 miles • Point of Origin: Quail Run, off Watch Hill Road, Westerly This no-sweat path is perfect for even the tiniest tikes on bikes with its paved, flat, 0.6 loop. In the summer months, the fields of the preserve burst with life, restored to New England meadow wildflowers and warm season grasses. Bring your binoculars: the trail has become a popular destination for bird and butterfly-watching.
gRills PReseRve • length: 1.2-4.6 miles • Point of Origin: Access at the end of Bowling Lane, Westerly At 550-acres of sprawling wildlife, Grills Preserve features primarily
old dirt roads, easily followable and of various lengths, perfect for biking. Cruise alongside streams, ponds, a freshwater marsh, and through upland and wetland forest. More, the Rhode Island Natural History Survey found that Grills Preserve is unique in that it houses significantly more species of wildlife than any other site in Rhode Island. Take the more challenging uphill trail to the top of a granite out-cropping known as “Big Tree” and take it all in.

hike south county Take in the beauty of nature at our preserved open spaces
sCeniC vieWs Offering nearly panoramic views of Narragansett Bay, Beavertail state Park is a rocky peninsula that hosts the idyllic Beavertail Lighthouse. There’s plenty of parking throughout, so your best bet is to find the vista of your choice, park and take a luxurious stroll on the sprawling greens. While Beavertail is a mostly flat and grassy park, the only real challenge is if you journey onto the rocky outcrops, which are definitely worth the exertion, for the view. Visitors can even climb to the top of the lighthouse tower with a suggested $5 donation to keep it in tiptop shape. Beavertail Road, Jamestown. JamestownRI.info/RRBeavertail

If strolling through the woods on a well maintained trail that opens up to the Bay sounds like heaven to you, then head to John h. Chafee nature Preserve. Their property at Rome Point has an easily accessible parking area with a trailhead for a 2.5-mile loop. Once you leave the parking area, you’ll stroll through a cozy woodland which leads to a pebbly beach with gorgeous views of Narragansett Bay – including the Jamestown Bridge. You’ll even catch peeks of seals on the offshore rocks at low tide, so be sure to bring the binoculars. Boston Neck Road, Route 1A between Hamilton Allenton Road and Route 138, North Kingstown. RIParks.com
Need to get away from the crowds? The peninsula at napatree Point is about as far away as from civilization as you can get. Located at the most southwestern point in the state, Napatree is in the sleepy seaside town of Watch Hill. Although parking on Bay Street can be a challenge, it’s well worth it. The sandy peninsula extends 1.5-miles into Block Island Sound. While the ocean side of the peninsula can be wildly breezy, the lee side is calmer, often with a host of boats anchored nearby. Napatree is an amazing intact ecosystem that’s been protected for years, so while you’re out enjoying it, make sure to adhere to all signage so that this gem can be available for generations to come. Fort Road, Westerly. TheWatchHillConservancy.org
WilDliFe hikes With all the preserved open space available to explore in South County, you’re bound to run into some of the creatures that live there, especially at Trustom Pond national Wildlife Refuge. At Trustom you’ll find a variety of habitats, which encourages a variety of wildlife to live there. From wetlands with frogs and turtles, ponds with wood ducks and juvenile fish, to wooded areas with deer and a long sandy beach with threatened and endangered shorebirds, Trustom will satisfy your wildlife craving. 1040 Matunuck Schoolhouse Road, South Kingstown. Challenging hikes If you want to get your sweat on in the heart of nature then head to kimball Wildlife sanctuary for the 9.2-mile Vin Gormley Trail. This trail will take you around the entirety of Watchaug Pond and runs the gamut of flat sections, rocky sections and plenty of up and downs. Luckily a nice portion
of it is forested, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to walk in the shade. Make sure to wear good walking/hiking shoes and definitely bring water. Watchaug Pond, Charlestown. ASRI.org Off the beaten path and winding its way into rural southwestern South County are ell and long Ponds. These connecting ponds are surrounded by roughly 5.7 miles of wooded trails that will kick your butt. The trails wind through huge rocky outcrops, beautiful vistas and wetlands all within a gorgeous forested setting. In early summer you’ll find the mountain laurel in bloom, which just happens to be this writer’s favorite time to visit. North Road, Rockville. Nature.org

A Must Visit This Summer!

Rhode Island’s capital city is a short drive from South County, but there’s so much to explore, from world-class dining to unmissable summer events. WBRU SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Southern New England’s favorite alternative rock station 95.5 WBRU, in partnership with Mayor Jorge Elorza and the City of Providence, puts on an unbeatable lineup each summer in the heart of the city. Catch free performances at Waterplace Park on Fridays starting July 8 through August 12 – all you’ll need is a blanket to sit on or a pair of dancing shoes! Performances start at 7:30pm and seating room is scarce, so get there early. WBRU.com
PROVIDENCE FLEA Found right on South Water Street, this flea takes a Providence twist on the classic outdoor market. Rain or shine, this stretch of vendors and food trucks is completely outdoors and runs every Sunday, June through mid-September, 10am–4pm. Whether you love vintage treasures, good food or appreciate the arts, you’re bound to find something at this funky flea. ProvidenceFlea.com
WATERFIRE Free to the public, this iconic Providence festival gathers huge
crowds to see the river light up in a unique event of water, fire and the arts. Enjoy local artists, vendors and live music as you watch over 80 bonfires glow against the rivers throughout downtown.
