What’s in a Name? In your travels through Southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter plenty of unofficial names for places. Even the name “South County” is itself a colloquial creation, encompassing most of Washington County, and one town each from Kent and Newport Counties. You’ll also hear lots of references to “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. Locals may direct you to strange places, like Galilee, Wyoming and Usquepaugh, that will confuse and confound your GPS. That is because many of the towns in South County are actually collections of small villages that were later incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.

EAST GREENWICH Southern Rhode Island’s hot spot for shopping and dining
A small town with a city feel, East Greenwich is having a moment. A new wave of delicious destinations and chic shops are drawing crowds to stroll Main Street and discover what’s new. SHOP CHIC Main Street, the center of the town, is dotted with clothing, home and gift stores, like Zuzu’s Petals (Facebook: Zuzu’s Petals) for women’s fashion, White Elephant (Facebook: The White Elephant) for upcycled home decor and Organical Botanical (TheOrganicalBotanical.com), which sells its own herbal, aromatherapeutic bath and body products. Street stay open late and offer fun themes, specials and refreshments. The first of the season is Dogs on Main, when people are welcome to bring their four-legged friends, on June 22.
FOODIE DESTINATION When people from Providence are heading to East Greenwich for dinner, you know big things are happening in the culinary scene. Kai Bar (KaiBarEG. com) is a new hot spot serving inspired tiki cocktails and small plates. Feast Sandwich
Company (FeastSandwichCompany.com) has people talking about their turned-up burgers and sandwiches, and their own herbal-infused sodas. Besos Kitchen and Cocktails (BesosKitchenAndCocktails.com) has one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces around. Classic restaurants like Red Stripe (RedStripeRestaurants.com), serving French and American bistro fare, and Rasa (IndianRestaurantsRI. com), which has upscale Indian food, still pack in crowds.
LIVING HISTORY Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each
county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1772 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums: the Varnum House Museum and the Varnum Memorial Armory. Built in 1773 by Major General James Mitchell Varnum (who served under George Washington and was a member of the Continental Congress), the Varnum House Museum (VarnumContinentals.org) is a

To taste some of Rhode Island’s food heritage, stop by Jigger’s Hill & Harbour Diner (JiggersDiner.com), which has been around since 1917 and is a go-to destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill (see: Kingston on page 35).
BY THE MARINA East Greenwich’s location on Greenwich Cove makes it easy for day-tripping boaters to make a stop. The East Greenwich Marina (EastGreenwichMarina.com)
offers transient dockage by the hour or overnight, and has two onsite restaurants. Finn’s Harborside (FinnsHarborside. com) has been serving fresh seafood and New England fare for over 40 years, and has live music on the weekends. Blu on the Water (BluOnTheWater. com) is the place to see and be seen in the summer in East Greenwich. The indoor/outdoor restaurant becomes an ultra lounge once the sun goes down.
COME CELEBRATE 100 YEARS AT JIGGER'S DINER!
EXPLORE GODDARD PARK Goddard Memorial State Park (RIParks.com) is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. Not only is its small beach the northernmost way to enjoy Narragansett Bay, the park has picnic and grill areas perfect for gatherings, and also offers horseback riding.

KINGSTON Big charm in a smart little village
A village of South Kingstown, Kingston is home to an Amtrak station, Rhode Island’s largest university and a lot of historic charm.

HIGHER LEARNING Kingston is best known as the home of the University of Rhode Island (URI.edu). Its major concerts at the Ryan Center, Division 1 NCAA athletics (namely the men’s basketball team the Rhody Rams), Master Gardeners program and performing arts all regularly draw crowds. Its Boss Ice Arena offers ice-skating year round, and the picturesque campus is perfect for a stroll any time.
KINGSTON’S HISTORY The Old Washington County Jail (SouthCountyHistoryCenter.org) is preserved as a museum, but also serves as the home of the South County History Center, with collections documenting early Rhode Island and Native American life.

LOOKING BACK South County’s oldest museum, the Museum of Primitive Art and Culture (PrimitiveArtMuseum.org), houses more than 15,000 archaeological artifacts from around the world. Its oldest artifact is a two-millionyear-old hominid chopping tool from East Africa. Other pieces in the collection include Stone Age and Bronze Age artifacts from Europe, prehistoric stone artifacts from New England, a Babylonian cuneiform tablet, and Rhode Island and Native American artifacts.
A CREATIVE COMMUNITY The quaint village of Peace Dale has a lot of creativity. It’s home to Beekman Violin (BeekmanViolin.com) and Bosgraaf Stained Glass Studio (BosgraafStudio. com). Among the sweet shops in the area, including a couple of great thrift shops, is Sweet Cakes

BY THE SEA WALL The area around Town Beach is bustling with families enjoying lunch on oceanside patios, surfers fresh off the waves and couples strolling and shopping. If you’re headed to Narragansett Town Beach, make sure you have cash – it’s one of Rhode Island’s only beaches that charges admission per head, instead of just charging for parking. The food options are unbelievable. www.ecampanellastudios.com
Seafood is the signature specialty here – be it grilled, sautéed, baked or fried. Clams, shrimp, oysters, lobster, mussels, fluke and salmon are just a sampling of what’s available on the award-winning seafood menu. Handcut ribeye steaks, freshly made pastas, sushi, healthy options (such as gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan dishes) and kids’ favorites are also among the delicious options available daily for lunch and dinner.
2
The fish is fresh off the boat.
Nestled in the port of Galilee, George’s is committed to the fishing village and its community of commercial fishermen. The restaurant buys its fish directly from local day boats to serve fresh and responsibly caught seafood.

Dining here is more than just a meal – it’s an experience. The largest waterfront restaurant in the state offers seven dining rooms on two floors with seating for up to 500 people. Block Island Ferry
This corner of Narragansett is best known as the fishing port of Pt. Judith – home of Rhode Island’s famous calamari – but the village of Galilee has a lot more to offer in fun and food.
Photography by Stacey Doyle
BEACH BITES Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. The sea wall between it and the passing Block Island Ferry makes for few waves and good visibility in the water. It’s also home to two Rhody food icons, George’s of Galilee (GeorgesOfGalilee.com) and Champlin’s Seafood (Champlins.com), that are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second-floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including an outdoor Channel Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walk-up window for beach snacks – they offer service to your beach chair – and a full restaurant inside. Their
upstairs bar and patio have live music in the afternoons and evenings and a view of the beach.
SAIL INTO BLOCK ISLAND As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic. Though the Block Island Ferry (BlockIslandFerry.com) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping.

BOAT TO PLATE There’s a reason you see Pt. Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island – and, let’s face it, all over the country: It’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted fish come into this port. Get them right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams and whatever other seafood is fresh and in season.

CHARIHO Three towns full of adventure
The towns of Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton, colloquially known as Cha-Ri-Ho, are rural hideaways that offer some of South County’s best coastal and wooded scenery. A MAGICAL EXCURSION Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (FantasticUmbrellaFactory. com) does not make, or even sell, umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th-century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar. At the Umbrella Factory, you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is a unique greenhouse, and there are perennial gardens filled

with flowers and sculptures throughout the property with places to sit and take everything in. There’s a bamboo maze, and a barnyard filled with emus, goats and chickens. And after you’ve done all that, there’s Small Axe Cafe for lunch.
UNUSUAL EATS Chariho has its share of delicious restaurants, but two are unlike any other in Rhode Island. The Nordic (Nordic Lodge.com) is a lakeside restaurant in Charlestown that
brings in customers by the busload, literally, to get a taste of their seafood buffet. The price tag is high – $93 per adult – but the spread is worth it: all-you-can-eat lobster, crab, raw bar, prime rib, filet, bacon-wrapped scallops, lobster bisque, shrimp scampi and lobster mac and cheese (to name a few), plus a salad bar, a dessert bar and soft drinks. There’s also an ála carte menu for smaller appetites. The Charlestown Rathskeller (TheCharlestownRathskeller.com)
is a piece of South County history, revived from a speakeasy in operation in that building 80 years ago. Now, the Rathskeller is a go-to hangout for locals. The kitchen serves gastropub favorites like the Duck & Sausage plate (crispy confit duck leg and Germanstyle bockwurst with braised red cabbage), a Bacon Blue Burger (with blue cheese, bacon, pickled onions and arugula) and their signature Rathskeller Fries in varieties like truffled pecorino or with short rib gravy. Before or after dinner, there are lawn games – their cornhole tournament is on Thursday evenings – and the restaurant often hosts live music.

NATURAL WONDERS Charlestown’s Ninigret Park hosts signature events like the Charlestown Seafood Festival, but the 227-acre park is also home to a playground, ball fields, a bike path, tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas and a freshwater pond with a beach. Inside the park, Frosty Drew Observatory (FrostyDrew.org) offers nighttime stargazing and an educational nature center.
Kettle Pond Visitor Center (Facebook: Kettle Pond Visitor Center) is an environmental learning center that teaches families about local ecosystems. It’s a great resource for learning about the National Wildlife Refuge Complex spread across the state, especially Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge just down the road.
FESTIVAL SEASON Chariho is home to some of the summer’s biggest events: the Charlestown Seafood Festival and Washington County Fair in August, and the Rhythm and Roots Festival on Labor Day weekend. Check out our Calendar of Events on page 87 for more.

productions. From June 30July 30, check out Calendar Girls, and catch the British farce One Man, Two Guvnors from August 4-September 3. The Chorus of Westerly (ChorusOfWesterly.org) brings back its Summer Pops on June 17. This beloved annual tradition features a performance by the Boston Pops Festival Orchestra with the Chorus, of the finale to the 1812 Overture. Families bring lawn chairs and picnic
baskets to Wilcox Park, enjoy the performance, and watch fireworks afterwards.
A FOODIE DESTINATION Westerly is second only to Providence and Newport in terms of the number and quality of its restaurants. A large Italian population has given the town its own iconic food: “Soupy” is a dry-cured Italian pork sausage descended from the sopressata of the area’s Calabrian heritage. Every family has its own recipe, but the sausage is available for sale at places like Dipper’s Packing Co. (SupRI.com), Phil’s Marketplace (PhilsMarketplaceRI.com) and Dunns Corners Market
(DunnsCornersMarket.com). Downtown Westerly is home to any restaurant that fits your taste, from classically Italian Trattoria Longo (Facebook: Trattoria Longo) to unmatched burgers at B&B Dockside (BnBDockside.com) to creative brunch at 84 Tavern on Canal (84Tavern.com). Ella’s Fine Food and Drink (EllasFineFoodAndDrink.com) serves locally minded French/Asian fusion, and its chef Jeannie Roland managed to accomplish the title task on Beat Bobby Flay. Noodle Revolution (Facebook: Noodle Revolution) serves some of the best Asian street food around, and Koi

The southernmost town in Rhode Island is a popular landing spot for visitors, and it’s not hard to see why. Easy access to the ferries and proximity to the highway – plus a lot of big city sophistication with a small town feel – make Westerly worth a visit.

COCKTAILS IN THE SAND Misquamicut is the only place in South County where servers will bring you lunch, complete with cocktails, while you’re actually on the beach. Paddy’s Beach Club (PaddysBeach. com) has lounge chairs available on their private beach area, as well as several outdoor bars. The kid-friendly dining rooms are in the shade, but still have great waterviews. The Andrea (AndreaBeachBar.com) is another beach-friendly restaurant
where you can walk straight off the sand, have lunch and hear some live music in the afternoons. Their adirondack chairs are prime real estate for getting some sun and enjoying a frozen beverage. The Windjammer Surf Bar (AtlanticBeachPark. com), contrary to its name, is actually another family-friendly restaurant. The Pleasant View Inn (PVInn.com) is a beachfront resort with a private beach and on-site restaurant. Maria’s Seaside Cafe (MariasSeasideCafe. com) is just steps off the beach and serves Mediterranean-inspired seafood.

CRUISING THE STRIP The small downtown area of Watch Hill is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Flying Horse Carousel at the end of Bay Street is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country. Shops along Bay Street and Fort Road offer beautifully curated summer shopping, from the sundresses at Christina LTD (ChristinaLTD.com) to nautical home decor at Highpoint Home (HighpointHomeDecor.com). St. Clair Annex (Facebook: St. Clair Annex Inc.) is Watch Hill’s iconic ice cream parlor and clam shack, but if you’re in the mood for a bigger meal, Olympia Tea Room (OlympiaTeaRoom.com) has been a full-service restaurant for over 100 years.
THE BEAUTY OF NATURE East Beach is the little strip of clear white sand between Ocean House and Taylor Swift’s house. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point is a popular spot for beachgoers, but it’s also a nature
preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so Napatree is a popular bird-watching spot as well. Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public beach and is a nature preserve. The Watch Hill Lighthouse, a 15-minute walk from town, dates back to 1856 and has a museum open to the public in July and August.
A DAY OF LUXURY While staying at Ocean House (OceanHouseRI.com) can cost up to $10,000 a night, the hotel is visitor-friendly, especially the on-site spa and expansive Verandah patio bar that’s perfect for cocktailing and people watching. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub to a fine dining experience, with patio snacks and a new champagne garden. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in the summer, the Ocean House hosts open-to-the-public lobster boils on their private beach.

BLOCK ISLAND An unspoiled oasis, minutes away

Block Island is a natural wonder. Just 15 miles from Point Judith, the island’s expansive green spaces and unspoiled coastline are worth exploring. Best of all, Block Island beaches are free. OLD AND NEW HARBORS If you’re arriving on the island by the Block Island Ferry (BlockIslandFerry.com), you’ll land in Old Harbor, which is the busy “Main Street” area of the island. Here, find a concentration of shops selling beachwear, souvenirs, jewelry and nautical gifts, like Gold Diggers (BlockIslandGoldDiggers.com). This is also the launching point for many water sports, like Block Island Parasail (BlockIslandParasail. com).

If you’re arriving on the island via New England Airlines (BlockIslandAirline.com) or by private boat, you’ll likely land in New Harbor. Boaterfriendly restaurant The Oar (Facebook: The Oar) has showers on the lower level and a lively dining area with an outdoor bar above. Also in New Harbor: kayak rentals, Payne’s Donuts (Facebook: Payne’s Donuts) and Champlin’s Marina (ChamplinsResort.com). Walk down the dock and you’ll be rewarded with a mudslide at Trader
Vic’s, a rooftop bar where you can watch the boats come in and out.

ISLAND DINING GETTING AROUND Block Island only has a few main roads, and nothing is out of reach without a car – though the slow boat does allow them if you book in advance. Disembark from the ferry, and you’ve got transportation options right in front of you: taxis in the queue that will take you from point A to point B, but also taxi tours from Mig’s Rig Taxi (MigsRigTaxi.com). If you’d prefer two wheels to two feet, rent a bike or a moped – you’ll see a lot of these on the island – from Aldo’s
There are so many options for delicious food on Block Island – your only boundaries are your stomach and your ferry time. Steps off the ferry in Old Harbor, Mohegan Cafe (MoheganCafeBrewery.com) brews its own beer. The National (NationalRI.com) has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch. Kimberly’s (KimberlysBlockIsland.com) offers Italian and American favorites. Poor People’s Pub (PPPBI.com) serves gastropub fare, and its new sister restaurant TigerFish (Facebook: TigerFish)

SEE THE SIGHTS Nearly half of Block Island is protected from development by organizations like the Block Island Conservancy (BIConservancy. org), which offers resources on exploring hiking trails around the island. The Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMaritime.org) gives kids and families opportunities to explore the ocean and sea life. The Ocean View Foundation (OceanViewFoundation. org) leads guided nature tours daily in the summer.
When it’s time for the beach – and isn’t it always time for the beach? – you can try your luck at one of the many small private beaches, or head to Fred Benson Town Beach (BlockIslandInfo.com), where they rent beach chairs and equipment and the waves are kid-friendly. Nearby Diamondblue Surf Shop (DiamondblueBI.com) offers surfing lessons. One of two lighthouses on the island, the Southeast Light offers views of Mohegan Bluffs and a small museum inside. Abrams Animal Farm (Facebook: Abrams Animal Farm) is home to exotic birds, kangaroos, a camel, lemurs, water buffalo and a zeedonk.

Just one bridge away, Jamestown is Rhode Island’s hidden gem. This island has gorgeous, unspoiled nature to explore, some of the state’s best food and a fraction of the crowd of other tourist destinations. RI’S MOONRISE KINGDOM Beavertail State Park (RIParks. com) is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of four picnic-friendly vistas and from the hiking trails throughout. Beavertail is also home to a lighthouse and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes

from Moonrise Kingdom there. Spend an afternoon exploring, or enjoy their environmental interpretive program with guided tidal excursions.
ISLAND EATS For an island with only 5,400 residents, Jamestown has a lot of delicious dining options. Here’s a taste of a few: Jamestown Fish (JamestownFishRI.com) is one of the state’s finest seafood restaurants, helmed by Executive
Chef (and James Beard Award nominee) Matthew MacCartney. The main dining room offers fresh-from-the-sea fine dining, while the upstairs lounge and outdoor bar have a more casual menu. Across the street, Simpatico Jamestown (SimpaticoJamestown.com) serves an eclectic menu that blends classic Rhode Island foods with worldly flavors. While you can eat inside, you really should choose a table outdoors in the garden, especially with a date. J22 Tap and Table (Facebook: J22TapAndTable) is a great example of keeping things small and doing them right. The res-
taurant has only 10 tables, a bar that seats 12 and a small menu that changes often, but don’t let that stop you. Every ingredient is hyper-local and at the peak of freshness, and everything, down to the cocktail sauce, is made in-house. Slice of Heaven (SliceOfHeavenRI.com) is a European-style bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, plus coffee, pastries and cocktails. They also offer homemade gelato and gluten-free options.
