CHARLESTOWN

Photography (Left) couresty of Umbrella Factory, (Right) by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent

A nature-lover’s paradise

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory

The Charlestown Rathskeller

With its quiet, sandy beaches and curious wooded spaces, Charlestown offers some of South County’s best natural scenery. FESTIVAL SEASON

A MAGICAL EXCURSION

The towns of Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton, colloquially known as Cha-RiHo, are rural hideaways that offer some of the state’s best coastal and wooded areas. The towns are also home to some of Rhode Island’s most beloved annual summer festivals: the Charlestown Seafood Festival (August 3-5), Richmond’s Washington County Fair (August 15-19), and the Rhythm and Roots Festival in Charlestown on Labor Day weekend.

Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (4820 Old Post Rd.) does not make, or even sell, umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar where you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The expansive property is filled with flowers, sculptures, and places to sit and take everything in. The Umbrella Factory

Gardens is an on-site greenhouse that sells unique plants and florals. There’s a bamboo maze, and a barnyard filled with emus, goats, and chickens. And after you’ve done all that, there’s lunch at the Small Axe Cafe.

WHERE TO EAT The Nordic (178 East Pasquiset Trl.) is a lakeside restaurant that brings in customers by the busload, literally, to get a taste of their seafood buffet. The price tag is high – $98 per adult – but

the spread is worth it: all-youcan-eat lobster, crab, raw bar, prime rib, filet, bacon-wrapped scallops, lobster bisque, shrimp scampi, and lobster mac and cheese (to name a few), plus a salad bar, a dessert bar, and soft drinks. There’s also an à la carte menu for smaller appetites. The Charlestown Rathskeller (489A Old Coach Rd.) is a piece of South County history, revived from a speakeasy that once operated in that same building 80 years ago. Now, the Rathskeller is a go-to hangout for locals. The kitchen serves gastropub favorites like the Duck & Sausage plate (crispy confit duck leg and German-style bockwurst SO Summer

famous Allie’s Donuts there.

NATURAL WONDERS Ninigret Park (5 Park Ln.), host to signature events like the Charlestown Seafood Festival, is a 227-acre park with a playground, ball fields, a bike path, tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas, and a freshwater pond with a beach. Inside the park, Frosty Drew Observatory offers nighttime stargazing and an educational nature center. Kettle Pond Visitor Center (50 Bend Rd.) is an environmental learning center that teaches families about local ecosystems. It’s a great resource for learning about the RI National Wildlife Refuge Complex, comprised of five refuges around the state, like Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge just down the road.

A small town with a city feel, East Greenwich is having a moment. A new wave of trendsetting restaurants and chic shops are drawing crowds to stroll Main Street and beyond. BOUTIQUE SHOPPING Main Street, the center of the town, is dotted with clothing, home and gift stores, like Zuzu’s Petals (165 Main St.) for women’s fashion; White Elephant (351 Main St.) for upcycled home decor; Sweet Twist (5707 Post Rd.) and Le’s Isle Rose (1000 Division St.) for gifts and housewares; and Organical Botanical (110 Main St.), which sells its own herbal, aromatherapeutic bath and body products. During the town’s Main Street Strolls, which happen once a

month during the summer, businesses on Main Street stay open late and offer fun themes, specials, and refreshments. EastGreenwichChamber.com

FOODIE DESTINATION When people from Providence are heading to East Greenwich for dinner, you know big things are happening in the culinary scene. La Masseria (223 Main St.) serves upscale Italian cuisine in an authentic countryside setting. Feast Sandwich

Company (427 Main St.) has people talking about their gourmet burgers and herbalinfused sodas.

fare, and Rasa (149 Main St.), which has upscale Indian food, still pack in crowds.

Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar (240 Main St.) offers fresh-from-theboat seafood in a classic New England setting. Breakfast and lunch are next level at Dante’s Kitchen (315 Main Street), where American favorites are served with a creative Southern twist. Main Street Coffee (137 Main St.) offers gourmet coffee and pastries by day, and indulgent cocktails by night. Raku Sakura (148 Main St.) can cure any sushi fix.

LIVING HISTORY

Classic restaurants like Red Stripe (455 Main St.), serving French and American bistro

Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1772 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. To taste some of Rhode Island’s food heritage, stop by Jigger’s Hill & Harbour Diner (145 Main St.), which has been around since 1917 and is a go-to destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Kingston.

BY THE MARINA East Greenwich’s location on Greenwich Cove makes it

easy for day-tripping boaters to make a stop. The East Greenwich Marina (28 Water St.) offers transient dockage by the hour or overnight, and has two on-site restaurants. Finn’s Harborside (38 Water St.) has been serving fresh seafood and New England fare for over 40 years, and has live music on the weekends. BLU on the Water (20 Water St.) is the place to see and be seen in the summer in East Greenwich. The indoor/ outdoor restaurant becomes an ultra lounge once the sun goes down.

GODDARD PARK Goddard Memorial State Park (1095 Ives St.) is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. Not only is its small beach the northernmost way to enjoy Narragansett Bay, the park has picnic and grill areas perfect for gatherings, and also offers horseback riding.

It houses 17thcentury furniture and household items. The Varnum Memorial Armory (6 Main St.) houses a military history museum, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and weapons from World Wars I and II.

Beavertail Lighthouse

Slice of Heaven

Photography by (L) Cate Brown, (Top R) Brian DeMello, (Bottom R) Julie Tremaine

Fort Wetherill

Just one bridge away, Jamestown is Rhode Island’s hidden gem. This island has gorgeous, unspoiled nature to explore, some of the state’s best food, and a fraction of the crowds of other tourist destinations. RI’S MOONRISE KINGDOM Beavertail State Park (Beavertail Rd.) is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of four picnic-friendly vistas and from the hiking trails throughout. Beavertail is also home to a lighthouse and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes from Moonrise Kingdom there. Spend an afternoon exploring, or enjoy their environmental

interpretive program with guided tidal excursions.

Across the street, Simpatico Jamestown (13 Narragansett Ave.) serves an eclectic menu that blends classic Rhode Island foods with worldly flavors. While you can eat inside, you really should choose a table outdoors in the garden, especially with a date.

ISLAND EATS For an island with a little over 5,000 residents, Jamestown has a lot of delicious dining options. Here’s a taste of a few: Jamestown Fish (14 Narragansett Ave.) is one of the state’s finest seafood restaurants, helmed by Executive Chef (and James Beard Award-nominee) Matthew MacCartney. The main dining room offers fresh-fromthe-sea fine dining, while the upstairs lounge and outdoor bar have a more casual menu.

J22 Tap and Table (22 Narragansett Ave.) is a great example of keeping things small and doing them right. The restaurant has only 10 tables, a bar that seats 12, and a small menu that changes often, but don’t let that stop you. Every ingredient is local and at the peak of freshness, and everything – down to the cocktail sauce – is housemade. Slice of Heaven (32 Narragansett Ave.) is a European-style

bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, plus coffee, pastries, and cocktails. Wood-fired artisan bread and pizza are made from scratch and baked on-site at Village Hearth Bakery (2 Watson Ave.). The rustic and cozy bakery cafe only accepts cash, so be sure to stop at the ATM before you visit. Chopmist Charlie’s (40 Narragansett Ave.), favored by locals for its casual vibe and affordable menu, offers New England classics like grilled sirloin steak and fried seafood platters. East Ferry Deli (47 Conanicus Ave.), open for breakfast and lunch daily, is known for their specialty sandwiches and sweeping waterfront views. SO Summer

LIVING HISTORY Jamestown is only nine miles long and one mile wide, but there’s a lot of history on the island. Fort Wetherill (3 Fort Wetherill Rd.), an abandoned military fort, is a must-see destination. Besides the fort itself, which has become something of a graffiti art museum, the views from the cliffs of this 100-foot vantage are stunning. It’s also a popular spot for scuba divers.

CREATIVE BRUNCH The Narragansett Cafe (25 Narragansett Ave.), better known to locals as The Ganny, offers some of the area’s best live music every night during the summer. Bands range from jazz and blues to rock, and are always danceable. NARRAGANSETT Sun, sand, and surf in Rhode Island’s beachiest town The Narragansett Towers

Photography (Top R) by Kendall Paven St. Laurent, (Bottom R) by Hilary Block

Aunt Carrie’s

When visitors think of South County, they’re probably envisioning Narragansett. Three public beaches – Scarborough, Wheeler, and Narragansett Town Beach – offer all the rays you can handle. And there’s plenty of food and fun to get you through the days, even the rainy ones. BY THE SEA WALL The area around Town Beach is bustling with families enjoying lunch on oceanside patios, surfers fresh off the waves, and couples strolling and shopping. If you’re headed to Narragansett Town Beach, make sure you have cash – it’s one of Rhode Island’s only beaches that charges admission per head, instead of just charging for parking. It’s worth the few dollars, though: Surfing lessons are available all day long, and the facilities and sand are

among the cleanest and best you’ll find. The Narragansett Towers (35 Ocean Rd.) might be South County’s most Instagrammed landmark. The historic building, a space that can be rented for special events, hosts ballroom dancing lessons on Wednesday nights and live music on Thursdays. If you’re in the mood to shop, check out Pier Marketplace. The seaside complex is home to boutiques, a movie theatre, Nana’s

Ice Cream, and restaurants like Maharaja, which serves authentic Northern Indian food.

STROLL BOON STREET Boon Street, a short walk from the Towers, offers a unique cluster of boutiques and eateries. Gifts of Gansett (142 Boon St.) has a large selection of souvenirs like t-shirts, cups, and novelties. The Gnarly Donut (134 Boon St.) offers RI’s latest food obsession – fancy donuts – while Buzz Coffeehouse (148 Boon St.) serves

gourmet cups of coffee and baked treats. Crazy Burger Cafe & Juice Bar (144 Boon St.) offers insanely delicious handcrafted burgers, milkshakes, and fresh juices.

DINING IN NARRAGANSETT You definitely won’t go hungry in this seaside town, which has tons of delicious dining options. For quick service – say, if you’re looking for something to grab on your way to the beach – check out Gansett Wraps (70 Point Judith Rd.) for sandwiches and salads. Twin Willows (865 Boston Neck Rd.) has creative comfort food and an outdoor bar. Pancho O’Malley’s (140 Point Judith Rd.) serves SO Summer

Aunt Carrie’s (1240 Ocean Rd.) and Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House (1151 Point Judith Rd.) are two venerable seafood restaurants across the street from one another. Many a debate over personal preference has been had by generations of Rhode Islanders. For fine dining, 1230 Ocean Bistro (1230 Ocean Rd.) has waterfront dining and a huge deck, while Chair 5 at The Break Hotel (1208 Ocean Rd.) has poolside gourmet dining and a casual roof deck. The Coast Guard House, (40 Ocean Rd.) directly next to the Narragansett Towers, has views for days. A beachwear-friendly roof deck offers casual fare, while downstairs (including a patio and some cocktail-ready Adirondack chairs) offers upscale options.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE Housed at Canonchet Farm, the South County Museum (115 Strathmore St.) is a summer-only attraction that features a living history farm (including a flock of heritage Rhode Island Red chickens, the state bird), maritime gallery, print shop, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and more. Their collection comprises more than 20,000 objects, from pre-European settlement to the 1950s.

BEACH FITNESS Natural Fitness Yoga (76 Narragansett Ave.) leads early morning beach classes on Town Beach. Narrow River Kayaks (94 Middlebridge Rd.) offers rentals of kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards, as well as guided kayak tours. Warm Winds (26 Kingstown Rd.) is a surf shop that also offers surf and stand-up paddleboard rentals and lessons.

Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. The sea wall between it and the passing Block Island Ferry makes for few waves and good visibility in the water. It’s also home to two local food icons, George’s of Galilee (250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.) and Champlin’s Seafood (256 Great Island Rd.), that are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a secondfloor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including an outdoor Channel Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walkup window for beach snacks – they also offer service to your beach chair – and a full

restaurant inside. Their upstairs bar and patio have live music throughout the summer.

SAIL INTO BLOCK ISLAND As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic. Though the Block Island Ferry (304 Great Island Rd.) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping.

BUY AT THE DOCKS There’s a reason you see Point. Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island: It’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted seafood is brought into this port. Get it right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams, and whatever other seafood is fresh and in season.

KAYAK ADVENTURES APPRECIATING THE ARTS Wickford is home to fun events throughout the summer, including the iconic Wickford Art Festival (WickfordArt. org) from July 7-8. For over 50 years, the festival has been bringing artists from all over New England together to display their paintings, ceramics, photography, sculpture, and more. Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show

North Kingstown has played an important role in America’s history, and in aviation, naval development, and innovation. It’s also just a fun place to explore. QUONSET POINT The Port of Davisville at Quonset is a major point of entry for shipping on the East Coast. It’s home to the small Quonset State Airport (150 Airport St.) and is the place to catch the Martha’s Vineyard Fast Ferry. It’s also a naval hub where the beloved annual Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show (210 Airport St.) happens, this year on June 9-10. But Quonset isn’t just about the past: it’s the state’s go-to destination for innovation, like the multimillion-dollar facility that Autocrat recently built as an R&D space for foods like the syrup that makes Rhode Island’s official state drink, coffee milk.

EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY Smith’s Castle (55 Richard Smith Dr.) is one of the oldest homes in the state, and houses 400 years of New England history. Costumed interpreters give tours of the place, which hosts events like their annual Strawberry Festival (June 16). Never heard of Gilbert Stuart?

Check your wallet. Stuart painted the portrait of George Washington that’s on the $1 bill. The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum (815 Gilbert Stuart Rd.) is a time capsule of Rhode Island in 1750. The gorgeous scenery itself makes the place worth a visit.

HANDS-ON AQUARIUM Biomes Marine Biology Center (6640 Post Rd.) is Rhode Island’s biggest aquarium. With daily programming for kids and a touch tank, visitors learn all about what’s living in Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

WHERE TO EAT You won’t go hungry in North Kingstown, that’s for sure. Dan’s Carriage Inn & Saloon (1065 Tower Hill Rd.) offers family favorites in a historic setting; Oak Hill Tavern (565 Tower Hill Rd.) serves big portions with great prices; upscale dining and sipping can be found at Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar (7366 Post Rd.); and lunch gets a big city upgrade at The Provisioner New York Deli (7669 Post Rd.).

While it’s technically a village of South Kingstown, Wakefield is a bustling center of life in South County, home to the area’s only mall, an excellent hospital, and a Main Street made for strolling.

Photography (L) by Tiffany Axtman, (R) by Stacey Doyle

STROLL AND SHOP Wakefield Mall (160 Tower Hill Rd.) has the necessities you might have forgotten while packing for vacation, and Main Street in Wakefield has all the things you never knew you needed. The walkable area is lined with shops, restaurants, and galleries. The Purple Cow (205 Main St.) is a fun and funky clothing and gift shop focusing on women’s fashion and accessories. Seaside Style (343A Main St.) offers clothing, nautical home decor, and an extensive selection of home and kitchen gifts. Spangles (329 Main St.), a popular boutique that recently moved into a larger space across

the street, has a huge selection of women’s clothing, accessories, and seasonal flair.

AN ARTISTIC COMMUNITY A non-profit artist collective focusing on women’s art, The Hera Gallery (10 High St.) has been an institution in South County since 1974. From June 16-July 21, Hera will host “The Other Side,” a collaborative exhibit of seven gallery artists. At The Glass Station (446 Main St.), artists Eben Horton and Jennifer Nauck create beautiful objects out of glass, and even offer classes in paperweight and ornament making. Their work is sold all over the country.

DELICIOUS DINING

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

The Mews Tavern (456 Main St.) is a Rhode Island dining icon, offering creative comfort food and 69 beers on tap at any given time. Their upstairs Celtic Pub has 200 Scotches and 40 whiskies and bourbons to sample… just not all at the same time.

Sons of Liberty (1425 Kingstown Rd.), South County’s only distillery, has made a big splash with their Uprising and Battle Cry American whiskies. Visit the distillery to taste their new releases or to barrel age your own Manhattans and take them home with you.

The rooftop bar at Phil’s Main Street Grille (323 Main St.) is a rare find in South County, offering up scenic views and delicious cocktails. Downstairs, there are two restaurants – a casual diner and a more upscale dining room – to whet your appetite.

Grab your bike and hit the South County Bike Path, a seven mile stretch from Peace Dale to Narragansett that runs throughout Wakefield. Stedman Bike Shop (196 Main St.), a full-service shop near the path, offers a variety of bike rentals as well as sales.

Tavern on Main (195 Main St.), one of the newest additions to the Wakefield culinary scene, offers creative pub fare, baked pasta, and all-day weekend brunch.

Downtown lights up on Thursdays from 5-9pm, quite literally, for Wakefield RiverFire (Main St). Fire basins along the Saugatucket RIver are ablaze, and street performers and vendors SO Summer

THE COMMONS The Village At South County Commons (50 South County Commons Way) is a one-stop destination for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Start the day with a cup of coffee from Brewed Awakenings, a local hub for meet-ups and caffeinated beverages. Pasquale’s, arguably one of the best pizza restaurants in all of Rhode Island, serves authentic Neapolitan pizza from its wood-burning oven. Uptown Burger Bar, a recent Commons addition, serves up handcrafted patties with a creative twist. South Kingstown Cinema 8 presents all of the latest summer blockbusters. Bring chairs or a blanket to the summer concert series, which offers free and live music to the Commons on Thursdays from 6-8pm.

The Contemporary Theater Company (327 Main St.) stages unexpected and under-the-radar dramas and comedies. This summer you can catch performances of Peter and the Starcatcher, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, and Unnecessary Farce. Improv comedy is a CTC signature feature: the theater is hosting the Ocean State Improv Festival on June 6-10; Theatresports, where troupes challenge each other, happens on Thursdays in July and August; and Micetro Improv, their late night unpredictable comedy show, takes the stage on Fridays.

PRIMITIVE MUSEUM South County’s oldest museum, the Museum of Primitive Art and Culture (1058 Kingstown Rd.), houses more than 15,000 archaeological artifacts from around the world. Its oldest artifact is a two-million-yearold hominid chopping tool from East Africa. Other pieces in the collection include Stone Age and Bronze Age artifacts from Europe, prehistoric stone artifacts from New England, a Babylonian cuneiform tablet, and Rhode Island and Native American artifacts.

Big charm in a smart little village A village of South Kingstown, Kingston is home to an Amtrak station, RI’s largest university, and a lot of historic charm.

HIGHER LEARNING Kingston is best known as the home of the University of Rhode Island (45 Upper College Rd.). Its Boss Ice Arena offers ice skating year round, and the picturesque campus is perfect for a stroll any time.

(3481 Kingstown Rd.) range from classic rock tribute bands to family-friendly concerts. The Kingston Chamber Music Festival returns to the Fine Arts Center at URI for its 30th season on July 25-August 5 for a two-week series of concerts.

KINGSTON’S HISTORY

FOOD AND DRINK

Since 1696, Kenyon’s Grist Mill (21 Glen Rock Rd.) has been grinding out the cornmeal that makes Rhode Island’s iconic johnnycakes, which are savory corn pancakes available at diners all over South County. In addition to tours of the mill and the bucolic setting, Kenyon also offers kayaking on the Queen’s River.

Southern Rhode Island’s newest brewery and taproom, Shaidzon Beer Company (141 Fairgrounds Rd.), gets extra crafty by using locally grown herbs and hops in select brews like their Lowland Villager Saison and Hoped Up IPA. TLC Roasters Coffee (3362 Kingstown Rd.), a nearby specialty cafe, roasts its own beans and serves 21 iced coffees on tap. If you need some food to wash all those beverages down, Philadelphia’s famed fare can be found at Tilly’s Cheesesteaks (3711 Kingstown Rd.), a laidback spot that serves classic and creative variations of the cheesy sandwich.

ART AND CULTURE The South County Art Association (2587 Kingstown Rd.), a member-based artist organization, offers a variety of educational programs, classes, and exhibits to the public throughout the year. Musical performances at the Courthouse Center for the Arts

MATUNUCK Fresh from the ocean

Ocean Mist and The Pub

This tucked-away South Kingstown village is where you’re most likely to find locals enjoying beachfront restaurants and live entertainment all day and night.

Matunuck Oyster Bar (629 Succotash Rd.) is on the short list of must-try restaurants, not just for its preparations of fresh, local fish, but because owner Perry Raso raises his own Matunuck Oysters, available from the always-packed raw bar, and grows his vegetables at Matunuck Vegetable Farm. Across the street, Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Rd.) – along with its sister restaurant Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar – serves up traditional New England fare, and has an attached bakery that’s nearly impossible to resist. Bring your own wine to Jim’s Dock (1175 Succotash Rd.), where you can pick your own lobster and eat it on picnic tables on an actual fishing dock.

68 |

SoRhodeIsland.com

by the Sea offers dinner before the show, and cabaret performances after.

BEACH AND BLUES The Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is the quintessential beach bar: great pub fare, cold beers, and a relaxed crowd. By day, the O Mist is a family-friendly restaurant. By night, it’s the place to be when you’re coming straight off the beach and need refreshment. During the season, the Ocean Mist hosts live bands in the afternoon and at night. Next door, The Pub has traditional Irish and pub food, as well as several decks, beach access, and lots of live music. Plus, it has cabins, in case you decide you’d rather not drive home.

SEASIDE THEATRE

SECRET BAKERY

Theatre By The Sea (364 Cards Pond Rd.) has been a tradition in South County for nearly a century, and has seen the likes of Marlon Brando and Groucho Marx grace its stage. Housed in a historic barn, TBTS hosts professional-quality musical productions throughout the summer. The attached Bistro

Daddy’s Bread (805 Moonstone Beach Rd.) is a hidden bakery where you’ll never see a baker. Choose from bakeddaily loaves like Parmesan Garlic Dill or Apple Cinnamon, leave your cash in the honor system till, and just try to make it back to your car before you tear into them.

WESTERLY City sophistication with a small town feel

Flipside Pinball Bar

Noodle Revolution

Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent

The southernmost town in Rhode Island is a popular landing spot for visitors, and it’s not hard to see why. Easy access to the ferries and proximity to the highway – plus a lot of big city sophistication with a small town feel – make Westerly worth a visit. ARTS AND THE PARK Westerly has more arts and entertainment than any other place in South County, especially in the summer. Granite Theatre (1 Granite St.) offers a full summer season of stage productions. Check out The Ladies Foursome from June 1-June 17; June 29-July 22 brings The Comedy of Tenors; and Neil Simon’s The

Prisoner of Second Avenue on August 3-26. The Chorus of Westerly brings back its free Summer Pops on June 23. This beloved annual tradition features a performance by the Pops Festival Orchestra with the Chorus. Families bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets to Wilcox Park, enjoy the performance, and watch fireworks afterwards.

A FOODIE DESTINATION Westerly is second only to Providence and Newport in terms of the number and quality of its restaurants. A large Italian population has given the town its own iconic food: “Soupy” is a drycured Italian pork sausage descended from the sopressata of the area’s Calabrian heritage. Every family has its own recipe, but the sausage is available for sale at places like Dipper’s Packing Co. (55 Ledward Ave.), Phil’s Marketplace (116 Granite St.), and Dunns Corners Market (5 Langworthy Rd.).

Downtown Westerly is home to any restaurant that fits your taste, from classically Italian Trattoria Longo (84 High St.) to unmatched burgers at B&B Dockside (19 Margin St.) to creative brunch at 84 Tavern on Canal (15 Canal St). Ella’s Fine Food and Drink (2 Tower St.) serves locally minded French/Asian fusion, and its chef Jeannie Roland managed to accomplish the title task on Beat Bobby Flay. Noodle Revolution (87 Oak St.) serves some of the best Asian street food around, and Koi (65 High St.) offers creative sushi. SO Summer

RAISE A PINT In addition to being a food destination, Westerly is becoming a beer lover’s haven. The Malted Barley (42 High St.), a pub serving nearly 100 craft beers, along with gourmet pretzels and pretzel sandwiches, offers live music on weekends. Westerly’s resident brewery, Grey Sail Brewing (63 Canal St.), offers beers like their signature Flying Jenny extra pale ale, Captain’s Daughter imperial IPA, and Flagship

cream ale at their tasting and taproom, and at restaurants all over Rhode Island.

FUN AND GAMES The famed Knickerbocker Music Center (35 Railroad Ave.) is a great evening spot for live music and dancing. Vintage Cigar Lounge & Club (47 High St.) serves a full bar and over 375 varieties of cigars. Flipside Pinball Bar (1 Railroad Ave.) combines fun cocktails and craft brews with pinball action.

Shops along Bay Street and Fort Road offer beautifully curated summer shopping, from the colorful – and covetable – summer prints at Lilly Pulitzer (31 Bay St.) to nautical home decor at Highpoint Home (6 Fort Hill Rd.). NATURAL BEAUTY

A DAY OF LUXURY

East Beach is the little strip of clear white sand between Ocean House and Taylor Swift’s mansion. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point is a popular spot for beachgoers, and it’s also a nature preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so it’s a popular bird-watching spot as well. Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public

While staying at Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) can cost up to $10,000 a night, the hotel is visitor friendly, especially the expansive Verandah Raw Bar that’s perfect for cocktailing and people watching. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub and patio snacks to a fine dining experience and a champagne garden. The OH! Spa, also open to the public, offers luxe experiences like mud body wraps and aromatherapy massages.

BLOCK ISLAND An unspoiled oasis, minutes away

Southeast Light

Water Street

Block Island is a natural wonder. Just 15 miles from Point Judith, the island’s expansive green spaces and unspoiled coastline are worth exploring. Best of all, Block Island beaches are free.

Vic’s, a rooftop bar where you can watch the boats come in and out of the harbor..

GETTING AROUND OLD & NEW HARBORS If you’re arriving on the island by the Block Island Ferry, you’ll land in Old Harbor, which is the busy “Main Street” area of the island. Here, you’ll find a concentration of shops selling beachwear, souvenirs, jewelry, and nautical gifts, like Gold Diggers (90 Chapel St.) This is also the launching point for many water sports, like Block Island Parasail. If you’re arriving on the island

via New England Airlines or by private boat, you’ll likely land in New Harbor. Boaterfriendly restaurant The Oar (off West Side Rd.) has showers on the lower level and a lively dining area with an outdoor bar above. Also in New Harbor: Payne’s Donuts (1 Ocean Ave.) and Champlin’s Hotel, Marina and Resort (80 West Side Rd.), which also offers kayak, boat, and paddleboard rentals. Walk down the dock and you’ll be rewarded with a mudslide at Trader

Block Island only has a few main roads, and nothing is out of reach without a car – though the slow boat does allow them if you book in advance. Disembark from the ferry, and you’ve got transportation options right in front of you: taxis in the queue that will take you from point A to point B, but also taxi tours from Mig’s Rig Taxi. If you’d prefer two wheels to two feet, rent a bike or a moped – you’ll see a lot of these on the island – from Aldo’s Mopeds (130 Chapel St.).

ISLAND DINING There are so many options for delicious food on Block Island – your only boundaries are your stomach and your ferry time. Just steps off of the ferry in Old Harbor, Mohegan Cafe (213 Water St.) brews its own beer. The National (36 Water St.) has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch. Kimberly’s (238 Ocean Ave.) offers Italian and American favorites. Poor People’s Pub (33 Ocean Ave.) serves gastropub fare, and its sister restaurant TigerFish (126 Corn Neck Rd.) serves creative Asian fare. Ballard’s Inn (42 Water St.) has its own beach and serves food and cocktails – in pineapples, no less – right on the sand. SO Summer

The Mooring

Winner Winner

Photography (Bottom R) by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent

Once a summer playground for the rich and famous, Newport is a thriving cultural center in any season, filled with restaurants, shopping, museums, and all plenty of fun. NEW DINING CLASSICS Longtime favorite Newport restaurants like The Mooring (1 Sayers Wharf), The Black Pearl (1 Bannister’s Wharf), and Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant (140 Thames St.) will always draw crowds for their fresh, locallyinspired dining. But a whole new crop of must-try restaurants have been on the tip of everyone’s tongue, in more ways than one. Winner Winner (677 Thames St.) serves up fried chicken with creative and upscale Southern sides.

Stoneacre Tapas (515 Thames St.) features authentically European tapas from the Basque region of Spain. Harry’s Bar & Burgers (464 Thames St.), a landmark burger joint with two locations in Providence and now one in Newport, pairs pure Hereford beef sliders with an impressive selection of craft brews.

CURATED COCKTAILS It’s a scientific fact: A cocktail

is best enjoyed outside, by the water, in the summer. Newport has many options for oceanside imbibing, like the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking (1 Bellevue Ave.) and the Lawn at Castle Hill (590 Ocean Dr.). Both have prime spots for sitting in the sunshine, sipping a delicious cocktail, and taking in the view. The Salvation Cafe (140 Broadway), an eclectic restaurant a bit off the tourist path, serves up seasonal mojitos, sangria, and tropical tasting concoctions

in its courtyard Tiki Bar. Speaking of tiki drinks, Diego’s (11 Bowens Wharf) massive cocktail menu has them, as well as mezcal and tequila libations. Taste the difference between silver, reposado, and anejo at Perro Salado (19 Charles St.), where tequila flights offer tastings of the imported and hardto-find spirit.

FUN IN THE SUN Brenton Point State Park is a green space on Ocean Avenue – its proximity to the windy shore makes it a perfect location for kites, which dot the sky on warm days. Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach, is the city’s SO Summer

Newport’s best known attractions are the Newport Mansions, the larger-than-life “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and other illustrious turn-of-the-century families. The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) is the grandest of all of them; Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) has been the site of films like The Great Gatsby and True Lies; Marble House (596 Bellevue Ave.) has a Chinese teahouse on the grounds; and The Elms (367 Bellevue Ave.) has a to-die-for classical sculpture garden. Newport also has lots of cultural

LIVE FROM NEWPORT From weekend improv comedy shows by The Bit Players (4 Equality Park Place) to dinner theatre at The Newport Playhouse (102 JT Connell Highway) to live music at The Newport Blues Cafe (286 Thames St.), there’s always a live show to keep you entertained. The city is also home to mega music festivals: the Folk Fest (July 27-29) and the Jazz Fest (August 3-5) which both happen at Fort Adams State Park (80 Fort Adams Dr.).

PROVIDENCE New England’s coolest city is closer than you think Federal Hill

WaterFire

Providence is worthy of a full vacation in its own right, but if your schedule only leaves room for a single day trip, here are some must-see highlights. PROVIDENCE 101 If you only ever visit the city once, make sure it’s on a WaterFire night. Providence’s most famous tourist attraction is both an event and an art installation centered around bonfires that light up the river passing

through downtown. Tens of thousands of residents and visitors converge in the city center for art, food, music, dancing, and more. Lightings happen throughout the season, so check WaterFire.org for dates.

Federal Hill was once Providence’s famed Little Italy, but over the past decade or so it has become a much more multicultural dining destination. The main drag of Atwells Avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints, but boasts Mexican, Thai, and Japanese food, too. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, College Hill, home

to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. For the former, check out the Benefit Street Mile of History, the most impressive concentration of colonial homes in the country. For the latter, visit Thayer Street, the epicenter of College Hill’s food and nightlife scenes. SO Summer

For dining and nightlife that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over the West Side, which is clustered around the two main thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster Street. This area is home to the city’s vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings, and hip cocktail bars.

The Pawtucket Red Sox get a lot of attention when it comes to baseball in Rhode Island, but the Ocean State Waves are making a splash from Wakefield’s Old Mountain Field (831 Kingstown Rd.). Last summer, the Ocean State Waves had the best regular season record in their league, so if you’re looking for nine innings of fun while you’re in town, root for this home team.
