What’s in a Name?

In your travels throughout Southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter plenty of unofficial names for places. Even the name “South County” is itself a colloquial creation, encompassing most of Washington County, and one town each from Kent and Newport Counties. You’ll also hear lots of references to “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. Locals may direct you to strange places – like Galilee, Wyoming, and Usquepaugh – that will confuse and confound Google Maps. That is because many of the towns in South County are actually collections of small villages that were later incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.

Explore the best of Southern Rhode Island’s summer events

ALL SUMMER Every Saturday starting June 8, Field of Artisans hosts a pop-up outdoor marketplace, featuring a rotating showcase of their 350 artists, working in everything from jewelry and painting to glass and pottery. The event moves between Marina Park in Wakefield and South Kingstown Town Beach, depending on the weekend. Every Thursday starting mid-June, downtown Wakefield lights up 5-9pm for Wakefield RiverFire. Fire basins along the Saugatucket River are ablaze, and street performers and vendors offer entertainment and refreshments. Contemporary Theater Company (327 Main St., Wakefield) performs genre-bending shows all summer long: The Book Club Play from June 28 to July 27 and Wonder of the World from August 9 to 31.

Soak in the summer sun on a Sunset Cruise on Narragansett Bay (1347 Roger Williams Way, North Kingstown), which includes 10 lighthouses and 10 islands, plus views for days. Every Friday starting June 21, The Charlestown Land Trust Farmers Market offers fresh produce, meat, seafood, and locally-made treats for sale from 9:30am-1pm at the Church of the Holy Spirit (4150 Old Post Rd., Charlestown).

All Summer: Wakefield RiverFire

Photography by Tiffany Axtman

Theatre By The Sea (364 Cards Pond Rd., Matunuck) hosts Broadway musicals all season long in their historic waterfront barn. Love and Other Fables, a romantic screwball musical detailing the early life of Aesop, runs through June 16. Singin’ in the Rain dances onstage from June 19 to July 13, followed by the Disney’s Newsies July 17 to August 10, and Saturday Night Fever August 14 to September 8.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

JUNE

June 14-16

June 1

Shady Lea Mill (215 Shady Lea Rd., North Kingstown) houses over 40 artists and artisans, and during their summer Open Studios event, meet the makers, check out their workshops, and view demonstrations in everything from pottery to fiber art.

June 8 Nothing says summer quite like a picnic. The South County Museum (115 Strathmore St., Narragansett) invites the community to gather for Family Day and enjoy themed activities, crafts, and games.

June 11-16 The Block Island Music Festival at Captain Nick’s Rock ‘n Roll Bar. The “musical gumbo” brings together talented local artists like Niki Luparelli, The Little Compton Band, and Allysen and Ava Callery.

Newport doesn’t do anything halfway, and that includes yards. See how the other half gardens at the Newport Secret Garden Tours (32 Washington St., Newport), and walk through some of the city’s most prestigious – and normally private – outdoor spaces.

June 15 Smith’s Castle (55 Richard Smith Dr., North Kingstown) isn’t really a castle - but it is one of the oldest buildings in Rhode Island and has played an important role in the state’s history. Celebrate the North Kingstown landmark with their annual Strawberry Festival, featuring family-friendly entertainment, costumed historical interpreters and, you guessed it, lots of strawberry shortcake.

June 22 Exeter’s Tomaquag Museum (390 Summit Rd.) preserves

June 21-23: Newport Flower Show

the heritage of Rhode Island’s native population. Celebrate Strawberry Thanksgiving with them, when there will be storytelling, games, tours and a native arts market.

June 22 Summer Pops gives you all of the indoor entertainment you could want, but outside. The

Pops Festival Orchestra joins The Chorus of Westerly for an outdoor concert in Westerly’s Wilcox Park, followed by fireworks.

June 21-23 The Newport Flower Show is turning the grounds of Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) into a miniature Versailles. Events

June 27 Grab your kiddos or embrace your inner child for East Greenwich’s Chalk The Block. Part of the town’s Main Street Stroll series, this chalk drawing contest encourages participants to unleash their creative spirit in a 4x4 patch of pavement. The community votes on their favorites.

JULY July 4

Narragansett’s 4th of July Independence Day Beach Party is an annual tradition. Festivities begin in the afternoon with magician Scott Jameson performing at the North Beach Clubhouse, followed by a performance by Brass Force in the evening, and fireworks at dusk.

A nature-lover’s paradise

Charlestown Seafood Festival

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory

With its quiet, sandy beaches and curious wooded spaces, Charlestown offers some of South County’s best natural scenery. FESTIVAL SEASON

A MAGICAL EXCURSION

The towns of Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton, colloquially known as Cha-RiHo, are rural hideaways that offer some of the state’s best coastal and wooded areas. The towns are also home to some of Rhode Island’s most beloved annual summer festivals: the Charlestown Seafood Festival (August 2-4), Richmond’s Washington County Fair (August 14-18), and the Rhythm and Roots Festival in Charlestown on Labor Day weekend (August 30-September 1).

Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (4820 Old Post Rd.) does not make, or even sell, umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar where you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The expansive property is filled with flowers, sculptures, and places to sit and take everything in. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is an on-site greenhouse

that sells unique plants and florals. There’s a bamboo maze and a barnyard filled with emus, goats, and chickens. And after you’ve done all that, there’s lunch at the Small Axe Cafe.

THE ULTIMATE BUFFET The Nordic (178 East Pasquiset Trl.) is a lakeside restaurant that brings in customers by the busload, literally, to get a taste of their legendary seafood buffet. The price tag is high – $103 per adult – but the spread is worth it: all-you-can-eat lobster, crab, raw bar, prime rib, filet, bacon-

wrapped scallops, lobster bisque, shrimp scampi, and lobster mac and cheese (to name a few), plus a salad bar, dessert bar, and soft drinks. There’s also an à la carte menu for smaller appetites.

DELICIOUS DINING The Breachway Grill (1 Charlestown Beach Rd.) offers a huge menu – pizza, burgers, steaks, and day-fresh seafood – with a laid-back atmosphere where local musicians play live on weekend nights. Next door, the Breachway Gourmet has a large prepared food section, as well as made-to-order deli sandwiches with imported deli meats and cheeses. Gemelli Bistro also SO Summer

A small town with a city feel, East Greenwich is a must-stop destination. A new wave of trendsetting restaurants and chic shops are drawing crowds to stroll Main Street and beyond.

BOUTIQUE SHOPPING Main Street, the center of town, is dotted with clothing, home, and gift stores, like Zuzu’s of East Greenwich (165 Main St.) for women’s fashion; White Elephant (351 Main St.) for upcycled home decor; and Organical Botanical (110 Main St.), which sells its own herbal, aromatherapeutic bath and body products. Sweet Twist (5707 Post Rd.) has an ever-changing collection of seasonal accessories for you and your home, as well as small batch chocolate confections. Les Isle Rose (1000 Division St.) is an enormous store packed with souvenirs, gifts, clothing, home decor, and fresh flowers. Blueprint 5 (631 Main St.), an upscale men’s store, featuring imported Italian clothing and an on-site tailor.

During the town’s Main Street Strolls, which happen once a month during the summer, businesses on Main Street stay open late and offer fun themes, specials, and refreshments. See EastGreenwichChamber.com for dates.

DINING DESTINATION When people from Providence are heading to East Greenwich for dinner, you know big things are happening in the culinary scene. Starting with American fare, Feast Sandwich Company (427 Main St.) has people talking about their gourmet burgers and herbal-infused sodas. Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar (240 Main St.) offers fresh-from-theboat seafood in a classic New England setting. Breakfast and

lunch are next level at Dante’s Kitchen (315 Main Street), where American favorites are served with a creative Southern twist. T’s Restaurant (5600 Post Rd.) has been a Rhode Island favorite for decades. With three locations in the state, the homestyle restaurant is known for their all-day creative breakfast. For worldly cuisine, no passport is needed when you’re on Main Street. La Masseria (223 Main St.) serves upscale Italian cuisine in an authentic countryside setting and Fresco (301 Main St.) has a great selection of Mediterranean cuisine. Raku Sakura (148 Main St.) can cure any sushi fix. Red Stripe (455 Main St.) serves French-inspired food in a bistro setting and Rasa (149 Main St.) is an upscale Indian restaurant. Kon Asian Bistro & Hibachi Grill (553 Main St.) offers a fun dining experience with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. You can build your own poke bowl at Kai Bar Restaurant

(232 Main St.). Their tropical cocktails, all hand-crafted, taste as good as they look. Even coffee gets the epicurean treatment in East Greenwich. Main Street Coffee (137 Main St.) offers gourmet coffee and pastries by day, and indulgent cocktails by night. Felicia’s Coffee (5757 Post Rd.) couples an inviting coffeehouse atmosphere with a huge selection of flavored and specialty coffee. The Nook Coffee House (307 Main St.), one of the area’s newest spots, is committed to locally sourced coffee, teas, and baked treats. Also new to town is LineSider Brewing Company (1485 South County Tr.), a small batch beer facility and tap room co-owned by a retired New England Patriots player.

See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums: the Varnum House Museum and the Varnum Memorial Armory. Built in 1773 by Major General James Mitchell Varnum, who served under George Washington and was a member of the Continental Congress, the Varnum House Museum (57 Pierce St.) is a Georgian mansion that is a time capsule of early American life. It houses 17th-century furniture and household items. The Varnum Memorial Armory (6 Main St.) houses a military history museum, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and weapons from World Wars I and II. To taste some of Rhode Island’s food heritage, stop by Jigger’s Hill & Harbour Diner (145 Main St.), which has been around since

1917 and is a go-to destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Kingston.

FUN AT THE MARINA East Greenwich’s location on Greenwich Cove makes it easy for day-tripping boaters to make a stop. The East Greenwich Marina (28 Water St.) offers transient dockage by the hour or overnight, and has two on-site restaurants. Finn’s Harborside (38 Water St.) has been serving fresh seafood and New England fare for over 40 years, and has live music on the weekends. BLU On The Water (20 Water St.) is the place to see and be seen in the summer in East Greenwich. The indoor/outdoor restaurant becomes an ultra lounge once the sun goes down.

GODDARD PARK Goddard Memorial State Park (1095 Ives St.) is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. Not only is its small beach the northernmost way to enjoy Narragansett Bay, but the park has picnic and grill areas perfect for gatherings and also offers horseback riding.

Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1772 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

Narragansett Town Beach

When visitors think of South County, they probably envision Narragansett. Three public beaches – Scarborough, Wheeler, and Narragansett Town Beach – offer all the rays you can handle. And there’s plenty of food and fun to get you through the days, even the rainy ones. BY THE TOWERS The area around Town Beach is bustling with families enjoying lunch on oceanside patios, surfers fresh off the waves, and couples strolling and shopping. If you’re headed to Narragansett Town Beach, make sure you have cash – it’s one of Rhode Island’s only beaches that charges admission per head, instead of just charging for parking. It’s worth the few dollars, though: Surfing lessons are available all day long, and the facilities and sand

are among the cleanest and best you’ll find. The Narragansett Towers (35 Ocean Rd.) might be South County’s most Instagrammed landmark. The historic building, a space that can be rented for special events, hosts ballroom dancing lessons on Wednesday nights and live music on Thursdays. If you’re in the mood to shop, check out Pier Marketplace. The seaside complex is home

to boutiques, Nana’s Ice Cream, and restaurants like Maharaja, which serves authentic Northern Indian food, and new addition Calaveras, a lively Mexican restaurant.

DINING IN NARRAGANSETT You definitely won’t go hungry – this seaside town has tons of delicious dining options. Twin Willows (865 Boston Neck Rd.) has a huge menu boasting seafood and comfort food favorites, as well as an outdoor bar.

Pancho O’Malley’s (140 Point Judith Rd.) serves Mexican fare in lively pub setting. Crazy Burger Cafe & Juice Bar (144 Boon St.) offers insanely delicious handcrafted burgers, milkshakes, and fresh juices. Aunt Carrie’s (1240 Ocean Rd.) and Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House (1151 Point Judith Rd.) are two venerable seafood restaurants across the street from one another. Many a debate over personal preference has been had by generations of Rhode Islanders. For fine dining, 1230 Ocean Bistro (1230 Ocean Rd.) has waterfront dining and a huge deck, SO Summer

The Coast Guard House (40 Ocean Rd.), directly next to the Narragansett Towers, has views for days. A beachwear-friendly roof deck offers casual fare, while downstairs (including a patio and some cocktail-ready Adirondack chairs) offers upscale options. For quick service – say, if you’re looking for something to grab on your way to the beach – check out Gansett Wraps (70 Point Judith Rd.) for sandwiches and salads. Colvitto’s Pizza & Bakery (91 Point Judith Rd.) has by-the-slice pizza and calzones, as well as homemade baked goods. Farm to Table On The Go, a new food truck located at Sunset Farms (505 Point Judith Rd), serves up lunch and dinner. Smoothy Booty Cafe (134 Boon St.) whips up fruit, green, and java smoothies in their upbeat juice bar.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE Housed at Canonchet Farm, the South County Museum (115 Strathmore St.) is a summeronly attraction that features a living history farm (including a flock of heritage Rhode Island Red chickens, the state bird), maritime gallery, print shop, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and more. Their collection comprises more than 20,000 objects, from pre-European settlement to the 1950s.

BEACH FITNESS Natural Fitness Yoga (76 Narragansett Ave.) leads early morning beach classes on Town Beach. Narrow River Kayaks (94 Middlebridge Rd.) offers rentals of kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards, as well as guided kayak tours. Warm Winds (26 Kingstown Rd.) is a surf shop that also offers surf and stand-up paddleboard rentals and lessons.

GALILEE Catch a wave – or some fish

This corner of Narragansett is best known as the fishing port of Point Judith – home of Rhode Island’s famous calamari – but the village of Galilee has a lot more to offer in fun and food. BEACH RESTAURANTS Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. It’s also home to two local food icons, George’s of Galilee (250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.) and Champlin’s Seafood (256 Great Island Rd.), that are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second-floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including an outdoor Channel Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walk-up window for beach snacks – they also offer service to your beach chair – and a full restaurant inside. Their upstairs bar and patio have live music throughout the summer. Jimmy’s Portside Seafood Restaurant (321 Great Island Rd.), a few steps down the road, serves day-caught sea-

food in their large dining room and outdoor patio.

WATER ADVENTURES As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic. Though the Block Island Ferry (304 Great Island Rd.) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping. Seven B’s V (30 State St.) has a full schedule of public fishing excursions and can accommodate private charters as well.

FROM THE DOCKS There’s a reason you see Point Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island: It’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted seafood is brought into this port. Get it right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams, and whatever other seafood is fresh and in season.

Because we’ve got you covered all summer long!

QUONSET The past and the future collide at Quonset. The area was once home to the Quonset Point Naval Air Station, the northeast’s major base during WWII. Today, it’s Quonset Business Park, a large industrial and commercial site. The state’s go-to destination for innovation is home to nearly 200 businesses. There’s a small Quonset State Airport (150 Airport St.), and it’s where you can get on board the Martha’s Vineyard Fast Ferry.

Get a behind-the-scenes look of art being made at Studio 460 (460 Tower Hill Rd.) The working studio and art gallery features the sculptures of resident artist Henry Gauthier, as well as works from local artists.

HANDS-ON AQUARIUM Biomes Marine Biology Center (6640 Post Rd.) is Rhode Island’s biggest aquarium. With daily kids programming and a touch tank, visitors learn all about what’s living in Narragansett Bay.

ARTS & CULTURE

WHERE TO EAT

Smith’s Castle (55 Richard Smith Dr.) is one of the oldest homes in the state, and houses 400 years of New England history. Costumed interpreters give tours of the historic home. The site also hosts lectures, workshops, and events like their annual Strawberry Festival (June 15).

Allie’s Donuts (661 Quaker Ln.) is a must-stop anytime you’re in town. Dan’s Carriage Inn & Saloon (1065 Tower Hill Rd.) offers family favorites in a historic setting, as well as overlooking the North Kingstown Golf Course at Dan’s Tavern on the Green (615 Callahan Rd.). Oak Hill Tavern (565 Tower Hill Rd.) serves big portions with great prices. Upscale dining and sipping can be found at Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar (7366 Post Rd.), and lunch gets a big city upgrade at The Provisioner New York Deli (7669 Post Rd.).

Never heard of Gilbert Stuart? Check your wallet. Stuart painted the portrait of George Washington that’s on the $1 bill. The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum (815 Gilbert Stuart Rd.) is a time capsule of Rhode Island in 1750.

Downtown lights up on Thursdays from 5-9pm, quite literally, for Wakefield RiverFire (Main St). Fire basins along the Saugatucket River are ablaze, and street performers and vendors offer entertainment and refreshments. The free family-friendly weekly event runs starts mid-June.

ON STAGE The Contemporary Theater Company (327 Main St.) stages unexpected and under-the-radar dramas and comedies. This summer you can catch Shakespeare classics Two Gentlemen of Verona in July. Improv comedy is a CTC signature feature: the theater is hosting the Ocean State Improv Festival on June 5-9; To Be Continued… An Improvised Soap Opera happens on Thursdays from June 20 to August 29; and Micetro Improv, their late-night unpredictable comedy show, takes the stage on Fridays.

MIND AND BODY All That Matters (315 Main St.) is the state’s epicenter for whole living: part yoga studio, part spa, part resource library for those

looking to learn more about mindfulness, nutrition, and holistic health. Drop-in classes are available for visitors – some are even on the beach.

THE COMMONS The Village At South County Commons (50 South County Commons Way) is a onestop destination for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Start the day with a cup of coffee from Brewed Awakenings, a local hub for meet-ups and caffeinated beverages. Pasquale’s, arguably one of the best pizza restaurants in all of Rhode Island, serves authentic Neapolitan pizza from its wood-burning oven. Rachel’s Cafe, a recent Commons addition, serves up creative comfort food for breakfast and lunch. Tong-D offers Thai specialities and tropical-inspired cocktails. South Kingstown Cinema 8 presents all of the latest summer blockbusters. Bring chairs or a blanket to the summer concert series, which offers free and live music to the Commons on Thursdays from 6-8pm.

MATUNUCK Fresh from the ocean Matunuck Oyster Bar

This tucked-away South Kingstown village is where you’re most likely to find locals enjoying beachfront restaurants and live entertainment all day. FINE DINING Matunuck Oyster Bar (629 Succotash Rd.) is on the short list of must-try restaurants, not just for its preparations of fresh, local fish, but because owner Perry Raso raises his own Matunuck Oysters, available from the always-packed raw bar, and grows his vegetables at Matunuck Vegetable Farm. Across the street, Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Rd.) – along with its sister restaurant Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar – serves up traditional New England fare, and has an attached bakery that’s nearly impossible to resist. Bring your own wine to Jim’s Dock (1175 Succotash Rd.), where you can pick your own lobster and eat it on picnic tables on an actual fishing dock.

productions throughout the summer. The attached Bistro By The Sea offers dinner before the show, and cabaret performances after.

BEACH AND BLUES The Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is the quintessential beach bar: great pub fare, cold beers, and a relaxed crowd. By day, the O Mist is a family-friendly restaurant. By night, it’s the place to be when you’re coming straight off the beach and need refreshment. During the season, the Ocean Mist hosts live bands in the afternoon and at night. Next door, The Pub has traditional Irish and pub food, as well as several decks, beach access, and lots of live music.

Theatre By The Sea (364 Cards Pond Rd.) has been a tradition in South County for nearly a century, and has seen the likes of Marlon Brando and Groucho Marx grace its stage. Housed in a historic barn, TBTS hosts professional-quality musical

Boutiques like OMO Jewels (95 Watch Hill Rd.) and Compass Rose (271 Post Rd.) feature a curated mix of artisan and handmade goods.

Rivaling Providence and Newport, Westerly is a foodie’s dream town. Every family has its own recipe, but the sausage is available for sale at places like Dipper’s Packing Co. Westerly is home to any restaurant that fits your taste, from farm-to-bun burgers at Graze Burgers (127 Granite St.) to creative comfort food at The Shallows Kitchen + Bar (54R High St). Ella’s Fine Food and Drink (2 Tower St.) serves locally minded French/Asian fusion, and its chef Jeannie Roland managed to accomplish the title task on Beat Bobby Flay. Westerly has an emerging and exciting arts and entertainment scene, and it’s brimming during the summer. Granite Theatre (1 Granite St.) offers a full summer season of stage productions. SUMMER IS HERE!

Shops along Bay Street and Fort Road offer beautifully curated summer shopping, from the colorful – and covetable – summer prints at Lilly Pulitzer (31 Bay St.) to nautical-inspired bags made from recycled sails at Sea Bags (101 Bay St.). St. Clair Annex (141 Bay St.) is Watch Hill’s iconic ice cream parlor and clam shack. Pompelmo Gelato (31 High St.), a downtown Westerly favorite, has its seasonal Pompelmo by the Sea (12 Fort Rd.) that’s a mustvisit. Olympia Tea Room (74 Bay St.), one of Rhode Island’s oldest restaurants at 103 years old, continues to put a fresh spin on classic New England fare.

Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public beach and is a nature preserve.

HISTORIC CHARM The small downtown area of Watch Hill is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Flying Horse Carousel (151 Bay St.) is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country, and The Watch Hill Lighthouse (14 Lighthouse Rd.), a 15-minute walk from downtown Westerly, dates back to 1856, and has a museum open to the public in July and August.

East Beach is the little strip of white sand between Ocean House and Taylor Swift’s mansion. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point is a popular spot for beachgoers, and it’s also a nature preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so it’s a popular bird-watching spot as well.

While staying at The Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) can cost up to $10,000 a night, the hotel is visitor friendly, especially the expansive Verandah Raw Bar that’s perfect for cocktailing and people watching. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub and patio snacks to a fine dining experience and a champagne garden.

BLOCK ISLAND An island adventure just a ferry ride away Fred Benson Town Beach

Block Island is a natural wonder. Just 15 miles from Point Judith, the island’s expansive green spaces and unspoiled coastline are worth exploring. Best of all, all Block Island beaches are free. OLD & NEW HARBORS If you’re arriving on the island by the Block Island Ferry, you’ll land in Old Harbor, which is the busy “Main Street” area of the island. Dodge and Water streets are full of boutiques, surf shops, and novelty souvenirs and apparel retailers, like the Block Island Trading Company (1 Water St.). Old Harbor is also the launching point for many water sports, like Block Island Parasail. If you’re arriving on the island via New England Airlines or by private boat, you’ll likely land in New Harbor. Boater-friendly restaurant The Oar (off West Side Rd.) has showers on the

lower level and a lively dining area with an outdoor bar above (1 Ocean Ave.). Champlin’s Hotel, Marina and Resort (80 West Side Rd.) is a large resort that houses BI’s largest marina, several dining and drinking options, and a boatload of water activities. Kayaks, paddleboards, and bumper boats can be rented for the day or by the hour. Pick the watercraft of your choice, and go explore Great Salt Pond for a few hours. Walk on the dock and reward yourself with a mudslide at Trader Vic’s, a rooftop bar where you can watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. No trip to New Harbor is complete without a Payne’s Donuts (1 Ocean Ave.)

GETTING AROUND Block Island only has a few main roads, and nothing is out of reach without a car – though the traditional ferry does allow them if you book in advance. Disembark from the ferry, and you’ve got transportation options right in front of you: taxis in the queue that will take you from point A to point B. If you’d prefer two wheels to two feet, rent a bike or a moped – you’ll see a lot of these on the island – from Aldo’s Mopeds (130 Chapel St.). It’s good to note that there is no form of public transportation on Block Island.

ISLAND DINING There are so many options for delicious food on Block Island – your only boundaries are your stomach and your ferry time. Just steps off of the ferry in Old Harbor, Mohegan Cafe (213 Water St.) brews its

own beer. Head over to Persephone’s Kitchen (235 Dodge St.) for egg and avocado sandwiches, gluten-free banana bread, and their signature smoothie bowls – the perfect marriage of thickened fruitbased smoothies with granola. The Beachead (598 Corn Neck Rd.) is not only conveniently located down the street from the town beach, it’s crazy delicious. Seafood is a must-order here. Poor People’s Pub (33 Ocean Ave.) serves gastropub fare, and its sister restaurant TigerFish (126 Corn Neck Rd.) serves creative Asian fare. The National Hotel (36 Water St.) has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch. Kimberly’s (238 Ocean Ave.) offers Italian and American favorites. Ballard’s Inn (42 Water St.) has its own beach and serves food and cocktails – in SO Summer

SEE THE SIGHTS Nearly half of Block Island is protected from development by organizations like the Block Island Conservancy (235 Weldon’s Way), which offers resources on exploring hiking trails around the island. The Block Island Maritime Institute (216 Ocean Ave.) gives kids and families opportunities to explore the ocean and sea life. The Ocean View Foundation leads guided nature tours daily in the summer. Consider scheduling a taxi tour, generally in minivans that can seat up to 11 – this is a relaxing way to see the entire island from a local’s point of view. Stop by the Block Island Tourism Council (40 Center Rd.) for more information.

When it’s time for the beach – and isn’t it always time for the beach? – you can try your luck at one of the many small, private beaches, or head to Fred Benson Town Beach, where they rent beach chairs and equipment, and the waves are kid-friendly. Nearby Diamondblue Surf Shop (442 Dodge St.) offers surfing lessons. One of two lighthouses on the island, the Southeast Light, offers awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic and the Block Island Wind Farm. Abrams Animal Farm (1 Spring St.) is home to exotic birds, kangaroos, a camel, lemurs, water buffalo, and a zeedonk. Spectacular vistas of the 200foot Mohegan Bluffs and patches of near-perfect beaches can be had – but with a catch. You need to carefully descend 141 rocky steps to get there. The adventure and unmatched scenery are all worth it.

NEWPORT The ultimate waterfront city

Easton’s Beach

Winner Winner

Once a summer playground for the rich and famous, Newport is a thriving cultural center in any season, filled with restaurants, shopping, museums, and plenty of fun.

THE DINING SCENE The dining scene in Newport is – in a word – legendary. From culinary classics to new musttry spots, there is no shortage of amazing food experiences to be had in the City by the Sea. Longtime favorite Newport restaurants like The Mooring (1 Sayers Wharf), The Black Pearl (1 Bannister’s Wharf), and Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant (140 Thames St.) will always draw crowds for their fresh, locally inspired dining. Seafood is the starring attraction at several downtown restaurants, including the sleek and modern Midtown Oyster Bar (345 Thames St.)

and family-friendly Fluke Newport (41 Bowens Wharf). Though Stoneacre Brasserie (8 Washington Sq.) changes its menu on a daily basis, you can count on Instagramw o r t h y, s e a s o n a l - f o c u s e d dishes. Winner Winner (677 Thames St.) serves up fried chicken with creative and upscale Southern sides. Everything is gourmet at Mission (29 Marlborough St.), where burgers, hot dogs, and French fries are next level delicious.

CURATED COCKTAILS It’s a scientific fact: A cocktail is best enjoyed outside, by the water, in the summer. Newport

has many options for oceanside imbibing, like the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking (1 Bellevue Ave.) and the Lawn at Castle Hill (590 Ocean Ave.). Both have prime spots for sitting in the sunshine, sipping a delicious cocktail, and taking in the view. The Salvation Cafe (140 Broadway), an eclectic restaurant a bit off the tourist path, serves up seasonal mojitos, sangria, and tropical tasting concoctions in its courtyard Tiki Bar. Speaking of tiki drinks, Diego’s (11 Bowens Wharf) massive cocktail menu has them, as well as mezcal and tequila libations. Taste the difference between silver, reposado, and anejo at Perro Salado (19 Charles St.), where tequila flights offer tastings of the imported and hard-to-find spirit. Pour Judgement (32 Broad-

way), known for their fun drinks and food all week long, goes all out for Sunday brunch with their signature Loaded Bloody Mary.

FUN IN THE SUN Brenton Point State Park is a green space on Ocean Avenue – its proximity to the windy shore makes it a perfect location for kites, which dot the sky on warm days. Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach, is the city’s biggest beach. It has a boardwalk, a killer snack bar – seriously, try the lobster roll – and a carousel. It’s also home to the Save the Bay Exploration Center & Aquarium (175 Memorial Blvd.), where kids can get up close and personal with Narragansett Bay’s aquatic life. The Cliff Walk, a three-and-a half mile mostly paved trek, offers breathtaking views of the coast. SO Summer

Newport’s best known attractions are the Newport Mansions, the larger-than-life “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and other illustrious turn-of-the-century families. The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) is the grandest of all of them; Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) has been the site of films like The Great Gatsby and True Lies; Marble House (596 Bellevue Ave.) has a Chinese teahouse on the grounds; and The Elms (367 Bellevue Ave.) has a to-die-for classical sculpture garden. Newport also has lots of cultural attractions, like the Newport Art Museum (76 Bellevue Ave.), the

National Museum of American Illustration (492 Bellevue Ave.), the Audrain Automobile Museum (222 Bellevue Ave.), and the International Tennis Hall of Fame (194 Bellevue Ave.).

LIVE FROM NEWPORT From weekend improv comedy shows by The Bit Players (4 Equality Park Place) to dinner theater at the Newport Playhouse (102 JT Connell Hwy.) to live music at The Newport Blues Cafe (286 Thames St.), there’s always a live show to keep you entertained. Newport Murder Mystery puts a creative spin on the classic “whodunnit” with interactive performances at the Newport Art Musem and – new this summer – at sea with Fish n’ Tales Adventures (31 Bowen’s Wharf). The city is also home to mega music festivals: the Newport Folk Fest (July 2628) and the Newport Jazz Fest (August 2-4) which both happen at Fort Adams State Park (80 Fort Adams Dr.).

History and character overlooking Narragansett Bay FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION • MUSEUMS & MANSIONS • WATERFRONT STROLLING

Imagine Gift Store takes shopping to the next level, literally. With three floors of fun accessories for you and your home, this Warren landmark is also New England’s largest gift store. See page 104 for details.

EAST BAY A chic and historic coastal community

Bristol Fourth of July Parade

The series of communities east of Narragansett Bay are collectively known as the East Bay. The coastal area – which includes towns Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton, and Little Compton – is also home to many of Rhode Island’s largest farms, vineyards, and parks. JULY 4 IN BRISTOL Bristol knows how to throw a party. Often referred as the “most patriotic town in America,” this waterfront community is home to the nation’s longest running Fourth of July parade. The Bristol Fourth of July Celebration is a multiweek series of events that includes a ten-day Concert Series at Independence Park and the fancy Fourth of July Ball at the Herreshoff Marine Museum on June 21, all lead-

ing up to the spectacular parade on the actual Fourth. See FourthOfJulyBristolRI.com for a full events calendar.

NATURE’S CALLING Colt State Park (Hope St., Bristol), often called the “gem” of the state parks, is a gorgeous public space that has panoramic views of the coast, impeccably manicured lawns, four miles of bike trails, hundreds of picnic tables, and a small town beach. Down the road,

the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium (1401 Hope St., Bristol) offers visitors interactive exhibits, guided walks, and hands-on opportunities to learn more about local marine and wildlife. The natural history museum is located right off the East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile paved and scenic trail that spans from Bristol to Providence. The Norman Bird Sanctuary (583 Third Beach Rd., Middletown) has seven miles of well-preserved hiking trails on its educational campus.

FARMS & VINEYARDS Sweet Berry Farm (915 Mitchell’s Lane, Middletown) is a lush conserved 100-acre land that includes a market cafe

and pick-your-own fruit. A small family farm, Sakonnet Farm (4042 Main Rd., Tiverton) offers free-range eggs, fresh produce, and homemade jams and pies. Wishing Stone Farm (25 Shaw Rd., Little Compton) is a modestsized farm that presents Instagram-ready farm dinners with some of the Ocean State’s top restaurants and chefs. Newport Vineyards, New England’s largest grape grower, is a major destination that offers wine tastings, tours, and farmto-plate dining at Brix Restaurant. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards (162 West Main Rd., Little Compton) is a dreamy space with award-winning wine you can sample daily from 12-4pm.

SHOP & DINE Unique and whimsical shops can be found throughout the East Bay, such as the massively fun Imagine Gift Store (5 Miller St., Warren), which is also New England’s largest gift shop. Walk a few steps down the road to The Peyton Co. (11 Child St., Warren) for organic bath and beauty products. In Bristol, Caron Jewelers (473 Hope St.) has a stunning collection of fine jewelry; Sea Rose Cottage (21 Constitution St.) mixes new and upcycled home decor and accessories; and gifts for any occasion can be picked up at Kate & Company (301 Hope St.). Cross over the Mount Hope and Sakonnet bridges for an all-day, quintessential New England shopping experience at Tiverton Four Corners (Main Rd., Tiverton). The quaint district offers a diverse variety of antique, artisan, and boutique shopping.

HISTORIC BRISTOL Though this charming waterfront town draws locals and visitors for its hopping downtown

dining and shopping scene, Bristol is also a destination for historic sites. Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum (101 Ferry Rd.) is an impeccable property that includes the 1890s summer cottage of Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle. Tours of the mansion and extensive gardens are offered throughout the year. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Farm (250 Metacom Ave.) is a historically significant property that dates back to early American settlement. In fact, some historians believe that the first Thanksgiving feast was held here. Today the site is an inn with 12 private rooms, a function space that is popular for weddings, and also a public space for exploring. Linden Place (500 Hope St.) is also steeped in history. One of the grandest examples of Federalist architecture in New England, the site was once the home of the slave-trading DeWolf family. Today the museum mansion offers community educational programs, tours, and events.

PROVIDENCE

An ever-vibrant Creative Capital

Federal Hill

Burnside Park Music Series

Providence is worthy of a full vacation in its own right, but if your schedule only leaves room for a single day trip, here are some must-see highlights. CITY NEIGHBORHOODS Federal Hill was once Providence’s famed Little Italy, but over the past decade or so it has become a much more multicultural dining destination. The main drag of Atwells Avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints, but boasts Mexican, Thai, and Japanese food, too. On the other side of town, the East Side is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. For the

former, check out the Benefit Street Mile of History, the most impressive concentration of colonial homes in the country. For the latter, visit Thayer Street, the epicenter of College Hill’s food and nightlife scenes. Home to Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the RISD Museum (20 North Main St.), this neighborhood attracts the bright and creative. Downtown Providence is home to many of the city’s

most acclaimed restaurants, along with nightlife, theater, art galleries, and unique shopping. One of the most unique shopping destinations anywhere is The Arcade (65 Weybosset St.), America’s oldest indoor shopping mall, which is home to hip drinking and dining establishments, vintage finds, and a bookstore dedicated to the city’s own HP Lovecraft. Meanwhile in Burnside Park (30 Exchange Ter.), local bands and food trucks pop up as part of the Burnside Music Series and Beer Garden on Thursdays all summer long. Colorful murals and structures can be spotted throughout the

city’s center, most of them are courtesy of The Avenue Concept. The cutting-edge public arts program has quite literally transformed the cityscape, most recently with the larger-than-life Still Here (32 Custom St.) installation with acclaimed artist Gaia. For dining and nightlife that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over the West Side, which is clustered around the two main thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster Street. This area is home to the city’s vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings, and hip cocktail bars. SO Summer

Find a lowkey spot at Oakland Beach, a sandy getaway with a boat ramp, saltwater swimming, and lots of dining options. There’s Iggy’s Boardwalk (885 Oakland Beach Ave.), which features clam shells stuffed with a seasoned breading and minced clam mixture (aka “stuffies”), clamcakes, and chowder, and their famous golden-fried “doughboys.” Top of the Bay (898 Oakland Beach Ave.) offers a view of the Bay alongside casual New England fare. Beach Cafe and Pub (805 Oakland Beach Ave.) serves

up a family-friendly breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Gaspee Days is a weeks-long celebration of Rhode Island spirit, commemorating the brave colonists who burned the reviledBritish revenue schooner, HSM Gaspee, as part of America’s First Blow for Freedom. On June 2, watch the Blessing of the Fleet and boat parade from the Rhode Island Yacht Club’s lawn (1 Ocean Ave., Cranston). On June 8, colonial groups dressed in traditional garb – complete with drums and fife, of course – march two miles down Narragansett Parkway for the Gaspee Day Parade. Finally, it all culminates in Pawtuxet Park on June 9 with a symbolic reenactment of the Burning of the Gaspee. Rocky Point was a large amusement park back in the day, drawing crowds until it closed in 1995. Now, Rocky Point Park offers natural trails and unmatched views of Narragansett Bay. The park also hosts Movies in the Park during the summer. LAST LOOK

Who says a day at the ocean needs to end when the sun goes down? For stargazers, that’s just when the sky comes alive. The lack of light pollution makes for some of the best views you’ll find outside a planetarium. Moonlit evenings are pure magic while moonless nights are superb for viewing the Milky Way, spotting planets, and wishing on shooting stars. No radios blaring, just the soundtrack of waves crashing on the shore, and the best part: no chance of leaving with a sunburn. Photography by Wolf Matthewson @wolfmatthewson
